Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6BA - The large-scale mechanical sculpture Ozzy the Bull, photographed inside Birmingham New Street Station at Birmingham B2 4ND. Originally created as a centrepiece for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the bull has since become one of the city's most recognisable contemporary landmarks.
Constructed from metal components and exposed mechanical detailing, Ozzy references Birmingham's industrial heritage while presenting a playful, accessible symbol of the city's modern identity. The bull was designed to embody strength, energy and resilience, qualities associated both with sport and with Birmingham's historic role as a centre of manufacturing and engineering.
Following the Games, Ozzy was installed at New Street Station, one of the UK's busiest transport hubs, ensuring continued public engagement and visibility. Positioned within the vast interior concourse of the station, the sculpture interacts with daily commuter flows, tourists and shoppers, transforming a functional transit space into a site of cultural encounter.
The presence of Ozzy inside the station reflects wider debates around the legacy of major sporting events, particularly how temporary symbols and installations can be repurposed to deliver long-term cultural and civic value. The sculpture has become a popular meeting point and photographic subject, reinforcing Birmingham's use of public art as a tool for place-making and identity.
Photographed in daylight with people and retail units visible, the image offers strong editorial value for themes including sporting legacy, urban regeneration, public art, city branding and contemporary life in British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3082P - Crossley Brothers was set up in 1867 by brothers Francis (1839?97) and William J.(1844?1911). Francis, with help from his uncle, bought the engineering business of John M Dunlop at Great Marlborough Street in Manchester city centre, including manufacturing pumps, presses, and small steam engines.
In 1869 they had the foresight to acquire the UK and world (except German) rights to the patents of Otto and Langden of Cologne for the new gas fueled atmospheric internal combustion engine and in 1876 these rights were extended to the famous Otto four-stroke cycle engine. The changeover to four stroke engines was remarkably rapid with the last atmospheric engines being made in 1877.
The business flourished. In 1881, Crossley Brothers became a private limited company (i.e. Crossley Brothers Ltd.), and then in 1882 it moved to larger premises in Pottery Lane, Openshaw, in eastern Manchester.
Crossley Brothers built diesel engines for stationary, marine and locomotive use. There was a wide range of engines from six to 3200 horsepower (Crossley) and up to 9000 horsepower (Crossley-Pielstick).
Their marine engines had a reputation for durability and reliability.

A puffin crossing with nearside signals in Aviemore
A staggered set of pelican crossings with farside signals in Greenwich
Pelican crossings, puffin crossings and pedex crossings are all types of controlled crossing controlled by traffic signals for pedestrians and drivers. These types of crossings can be used where vehicle speeds are high, where there are a lot of vulnerable pedestrians, where vehicle flows or pedestrian flows are high or where the road layout could cause uncertainty.
At these crossings, there will be at least two signal heads facing each direction of vehicular traffic, as well as signal heads and call buttons for pedestrians. The crossings can be staggered to shorten crossing times, mainly for the benefit of vehicular traffic flow.
While pelican crossings are no longer permitted to be installed in Great Britain (they are in Northern Ireland), pedex crossings allow the continued use of farside pedestrian signals

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MNFT95 - Pacer is the operational name of the British Rail Classes 140, 141, 142, 143 and 144 diesel multiple unit railbuses, built between 1980 and 1987. Intended as a short-term solution to a shortage of rolling stock (with a lifespan of no more than 20 years), as of 2018 many Pacer railbuses are still in use.
The Rail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations require that all public passenger trains must be accessible to disabled people by 2020. Only one Pacer (the modernised 144e) currently meets this requirement, and the remainder will therefore need to be withdrawn by that date unless they receive an extensive refurbishment. Porterbrook, which owns the Class 143 and Class 144 fleets, has proposed such a refurbishment for the rest of the fleet, while Angel Trains, which owns the Class 142 fleet, does not see such a refurbishment as a viable option

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM253K - Northern Ireland Assembly members may be under surveillance by UK spy agency GCHQ.
Amnesty International has written to all members of the Northern Ireland Assembly warning them that their communications could be under surveillance.
The move follows reports that GCHQ is no longer applying the so-called 'Wilson doctrine' to members of devolved assemblies in the UK.
The Wilson doctrine, named after former prime minister Harold Wilson, protects MPs' phones and electronic communications. GCHQ has previously also applied it to the communications of MLAs and MEPs. However, recent reports suggest that this is now no longer the case following a change in policy by the spy agency.
The policy change now means that members of devolved administrations and MEPs no longer have these protections.
The guidelines in place before March stated: As a matter of policy GCHQ applies the principles of the Wilson doctrine to Members of the House of Commons, Members of the House of Lords, UK MEPs, and members of the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish assemblies.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy FDNJR0 - Metrolink (also known as Manchester Metrolink) is a light rail tram system in Greater Manchester, England. The system is owned by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and operated and maintained under contract by RATP Group. In 2015/16, 34.3 million passenger journeys were made on the system.
The network consists of seven lines which radiate from Manchester city centre to termini at Altrincham, Ashton-under-Lyne, Bury, East Didsbury, Eccles, Manchester Airport and Rochdale. Metrolink has 93 stops along 57 miles (92 km) of standard-gauge track making it the largest light rail system in the United Kingdom. It consists of a mixture of on-street track shared with other traffic
reserved track, segregated from other traffic, often running alongside the roadway or in the central reservation, and converted former railway lines. It is operated by a fleet of Bombardier Flexity Swift M5000s.
A light rail system for Greater Manchester emerged from the failure of the 1970s Picc-Vic tunnel scheme to obtain central government funding. A light-rail scheme was proposed in 1982 as the least expensive rail-based transport solution for Manchester city centre and the surrounding Greater Manchester metropolitan area. Government approval was granted in 1988 and the network began operating services between Bury Interchange and Victoria on 6 April 1992, becoming the United Kingdom's first modern street-running rail system
the 1885-built Blackpool tramway being the only heritage tram system in the UK that had survived up to Metrolink's creation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXM1N - The area around the Pier Head and Albert Dock is iconic for tourists / travelers and even more beautiful by night or at dusk.
The Pier Head is a riverside location in the city centre of Liverpool, England. It is part of the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was inscribed in 2004.
The site encompasses a trio of landmarks, built on the site of the former George's Dock and referred to since at least 2000 as The Three Graces:
Royal Liver Building, built between 1908 and 1911 and designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas. It is a grade I listed building consisting of two clock towers, both crowned by mythical Liver Birds. The building is the headquarters of the Royal Liver Friendly Society.
Cunard Building, constructed between 1914 and 1916 and a grade II* listed building. It is the former headquarters of the Cunard Line shipping company.
Port of Liverpool Building, built from 1903 to 1907 and also grade II* listed. It is the former home of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board.
Also on the site is the grade II listed Mersey Tunnel building, to the east of the Port of Liverpool building. It was built in the 1930s and contains offices and ventilator equipment for the Queensway Tunnel.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RGKET9 - Chesterton Windmill is a 17th-century cylindric stone tower windmill with an arched base, located outside the village of Chesterton, Warwickshire. It is a Grade I listed building and a striking landmark in south-east Warwickshire.
The windmill is one of Warwickshire's most famous landmarks. It stands on a hilltop overlooking the village of Chesterton, near the Roman Fosse Way and about five miles (8 km) south-east of Warwick. It was built around 1632-1633, probably by Sir Edward Peyto, who was Lord of the Chesterton Manor House. At this time John Stone, a pupil of Inigo Jones, was in Chesterton designing the new Manor House and he probably helped with the windmill as well. Sir Edward was a mathematician and astrologer and probably his own architect to the windmill, but although claims have been made that the tower was originally built as an observatory, the estate accounts now at Warwick Record Office show that it has always been a windmill, making it the earliest tower mill in England to retain any of its working parts.

It is located on the former site of East India House in Lime Street, in London's main financial district, the City of London. The building is a leading example of radical Bowellism architecture in which the services for the building, such as ducts and lifts, are located on the exterior to maximise space in the interior.
Twenty-five years after completion in 1986, the building received Grade I listing in 2011
it was the youngest structure ever to obtain this status. It is said by Historic England to be universally recognised as one of the key buildings of the modern epoch

This is one of my favourite tracks of all time. 'Sister Europe' is a song by the English band The Psychedelic Furs from the band's 1980 first album, The Psychedelic Furs. Written by the band and produced by Steve Lillywhite, it was released in February 1980 as the album's second single.
This photograph echo's the cover of the single that shows the continental departures board at what looks like Charing Cross railway station London.
According to Richard Butler of the band, the lyrics conveyed sadness over his then-girlfriend moving away, and were written using imagery, 'instead of saying 'My bird's gone to Italy and I miss her''.
The Psychedelic Furs are an English post-punk/New Wave band founded in 1977. Led by singer Richard Butler and his brother Tim on bass guitar, the Psychedelic Furs are one of the many acts spawned from the British post-punk scene. Their music went through several phases, from an initially austere art rock sound, later touching on new wave and hard rock.
They scored several hits in their early career, but were launched to international attention in 1986 when the film director John Hughes used their song 'Pretty in Pink' for his movie of the same name. A newly recorded version of the song became the Psychedlic Furs' biggest hit to that time. 'Heartbreak Beat', from their 1987 album Midnight to Midnight, was the Furs' biggest Top 40 entry in the US.
The Psychedelic Furs went on hiatus in 1991, and the Butler brothers formed a new band called Love Spit Love. The Psychedelic Furs later regrouped in 2001 and continue to perform around the world.
St Pancras railway station, also known as London St Pancras and since 2007 as St Pancras International, is a railway station terminus celebrated for its Victorian architecture. The Grade I listed building stands on Euston Road in St Pancras, London Borough of Camden, between the British Library, King's Cross station and the Regent's Canal.
It was opened in 1868 by the Midland Railway as the southern terminus of its main line, which connected London with the East Midlands and Yorkshire. When it opened, the arched Barlow train shed was the largest single-span roof in the world.
After escaping planned demolition in the 1960s, the complex was renovated and expanded during the 2000s at a cost of \u00a3800 million with a ceremony attended by the Queen and extensive publicity introducing it as a public space. A security-sealed terminal area was constructed for Eurostar services to Continental Europe via High Speed 1 and the Channel Tunnel, with platforms for domestic trains to the north and south-east of England.
The restored station has 15 platforms, a shopping centre and a bus station, and is served by London Underground's King's Cross St Pancras tube station. St Pancras is owned by London and Continental Railways, along with the adjacent urban regeneration area known as King's Cross Central, and is one of 18 British stations managed by Network Rail. The redeveloped terminus has been described by the travel writer Simon Calder as 'the world's most wonderful railway station'

Their lyrical concept is born through the hatred that many of us have grown up with through our lives, the people we know, hate and love and the pure passion that drives us to aim as far we can... The band aim for a fresh melodic sound, yet maintaining an extreme yet old school feel to the music, forever hoping to progress through time, and with the dedication and drive we all have we believe this is possible
This Winnington Rec' Banned! gig was opened by Spires, Kensington Arms from Holland and topped off by AQOE (A Question Of Etiquette).
The AQOE set included 'Hold Tight', Divided, AQOE, Innovations, 'Visions of a sleeping god'and Brainless.
Good on Nick Hughes and The Banned Network for keeping these gigs on in these dire ConDem times of recession.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8FBAD - An engine order telegraph or E.O.T., often also called a Chadburn, is a communications device used on a ship (or submarine) for the pilot on the bridge to order engineers in the engine room to power the vessel at a certain desired speed. In early vessels, from the 1800s until about 1950, the device usually consisted of a round dial about nine inches in diameter with a knob at the center attached to one or more handles, and an indicator pointer on the face of the dial. Modern E.O.T.s on vessels which still use them use electronic light and sound signals.
Traditional E.O.T.s required a pilot wanting to change speed to ring the telegraph on the bridge, moving the handle to a different position on the dial. This would ring a bell in the engine room and move their pointer to the position on the dial selected by the bridge. The engineers hear the bell and move their handle to the same position to signal their acknowledgment of the order, and adjust the engine speed accordingly. Such an order is called a bell, for example the order for a ship's maximum speed, flank speed, is called a flank bell.
For urgent orders requiring rapid acceleration, the handle is moved three times so that the engine room bell is rung three times. This is called a cavitate bell because the rapid acceleration of the ship's propeller will cause the water around it to cavitate, causing a lot of noise and wear on the propellers. Such noise is undesirable during conflicts because it can give away a vessel's position.
On most modern vessels the EOT acts as a direct throttle with no intervening engine room personnel.
This one has positions of Full Ahead, Half, Slow, Dead Slow, Stand By, Stop. Astern Finished with engines, dead slow, slow, half and full. German U-boats of World War II contained the dial position Alarmtauchen, the order for a crash dive.
Most seen these days are copies. Most do not include the CL of Chadburn Liverpool which was the place of manufacture, as in this specimen h

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MNFT9T - Pacer is the operational name of the British Rail Classes 140, 141, 142, 143 and 144 diesel multiple unit railbuses, built between 1980 and 1987.
