The origins of no-dig gardening are unclear, and may be based on pre-industrial or nineteenth-century farming techniques. Masanobu Fukuoka started his pioneering research work in this domain in 1938, and began publishing in the 1970s his Fukuokan philosophy of do-nothing farming or natural farming, which is now acknowledged by some as the tap root of the permaculture movement. Two pioneers of the method in the twentieth century included F. C. King, Head Gardener at Levens Hall, South Westmorland, in the Lake District of England, who wrote the book Is Digging Necessary? in 1946, and a gardener from Middlecliffe in the UK, A. Mahsa Amini's death could be the spark that ignites Iran around women's rights

On the day that news of Mahsa Amini's death spread throughout Iran, a young woman with a shaved head joined protesters who had gathered outside Kasra hospital, where Amini had lain in a coma since her violent arrest by Iran's morality police days earlier.
In her hand she carried a plastic bag full of her long hair, shorn off in a gesture of solidarity with Amini and in defiance of the increasing crackdown on women by the regime.
A week later, and protests sparked by Amini's death are raging in the province of Kurdistan and Tehran as well as cities such as Rasht, Isfahan and Qom, one of Iran's most religiously conservative cities.
The rage across Iran at the brutal pointlessness of Amini's death has lit the fires of protest and the increasing desperation of the authorities to extinguish it are, some believe, a sign of the growing strength and momentum of Iran's women's rights movement.
Women's issues have long been a catalyst for broader political action in Iran, said Annabelle Sreberny, professor emeritus at the Iranian Studies Centre at Soas University of London. This could be it. It could be the moment when people motivated by all the problems facing Iran today, like rising inflation, ecological crisis and lack of democratic participation, coalesce around these women's issues to challenge the regime.
During the past week women have been at the forefront of many of the demonstrations, shaving their heads and burning their headscarves in defiance of the strict hijab law and its brutal enforcement that led to 22-year-old Amini's arrest and allegedly her death.
The women's movement in Iran started in the first month of the Islamic Republic and has been simmering for at least the last 20 years, said Sreberny.

Voters in Lymm will no longer elect an MP for Warrington should a new scheme be approved.
But revised proposals for new electoral boundaries will mean residents of Thelwall will still be in the Warrington South constituency.
The Boundary Commission is currently reviewing all boundaries across the country.
Its initial suggestion was that Lymm and Thelwall move to the Tatton ward covering Knutsford and other parts of Cheshire.
However following a long consultation period, a final plan has been revealed. It means Lymm will still be moved from Warrington South to Tatton on the electoral map.
Thelwall will stay in Warrington South, where Conservative Andy Carter is currently MP.
With an electorate of 86,422, the number of voters in Warrington South is considerably above the permitted electorate range.
A new month-look consultation will now take place before a final report is sent to Parliament to consider in the summer.
Tim Bowden, Secretary to the Boundary Commission for England, said: Today's publication is the culmination of months of analysis and we have revised nearly half of our initial proposals based on what people have told us. We now believe we are close to the best map of constituencies that can be achieved under the rules we are working to.
However, we still want people to tell us what they think of this latest map before we submit our final recommendations to Parliament next year. This is our final consultation and I encourage you to participate in the 2023 Boundary Review.
Objections were received about Lymm no longer being included in a Warrington constituency but also 'appreciable support' for the proposals.
Andy Carter provided evidence that 'Thelwall is an integral part of central Warrington, and has limited connections or community ties with Lymm, despite parts being in the same ward'.
He proposed that the Lymm North & Thelwall ward be split in order to retain more electors

Residential is the most likely outcome for the site, and it will be built into a masterplan for an area including Scotland Road, Town Hill, and Cockhedge. The council said it would look to sell the site in future.

In 1554, it was purchased by the Byrom family and became part residence and part drapers shop. The writer John Byrom was born there in 1692. The premises were licensed in 1862 and became the Vintners Arms, then the Kenyon Vaults and later The Old Wellington Inn. The building was extended in the 18th century to house John Shaw's Punch House which, as the name suggests, was licensed for the sale of strong alcoholic punch and became a meeting place for High Tories and possibly Jacobites
Shaw was master of the punch house for 58 years until he died in 1796 at the age of 83. After Shaw's death the punch house was kept by Peter Fearnhead, with the assistance of Molly under the same rules, until it was sold about ten years later to William Goodall, who had been the proprietor of the Fleece Tavern at the opposite end of the Old Shambles. The new landlord demolished part of the building and converted the rest into The King's Head Tavern in 1807. It later became known as Sinclair's, until oysters were introduced to the menu in 1845 and it became Sinclair's Oyster Bar, the name it retains to this day
In 1974, most of the old property between Shudehill and Market Street was demolished to accommodate the new Arndale Shopping Centre. The Old Shambles was underpinned with a concrete raft and, according to the Greater Manchester County Records Office, jacked-up 4 feet 9 inches to fit in with this development in the newly created Shambles Square
In June 1996, an IRA bomb exploded in nearby Corporation Street and badly damaged many of the surrounding buildings. Gasly attempted to pass between Zhou and Russell, but Russell moved to the left too late to close the gap causing his left rear tyre to make contact with Gasly's right front. The impact launched Zhou's car into the air where he landed upside down skidding down the track, then skipped and bounced all the way across the very long gravel trap at the end of the straightaway barely slowing but turning sideways before the inverted car suddenly dug into the gravel just short of the tire barrier still carrying so much speed and momentum that it launched so high it just glanced off the top of the barrier as it flew over it, rotating 540 degrees on its axis before hitting the catch fencing sideways facing up just a few feet from the front row of the grandstands before dropping 8 feet landing wedged into the small gap between the fence and tyre barrier where it stopped with the cockpit up against the backside of the tire barrier. As a result of the incident, Valtteri Bottas slowed slightly, which caused Alexander Albon to also slow. Sebastian Vettel attempted to brake, but was too close to Albon and hit him. Albon spun into the concrete pit wall, rebounded back on the track and was hit by Yuki Tsunoda and Esteban Ocon, damaging both of their cars. Tsunoda and Ocon both returned to the pit lane for repairs, but Albon was unable to continue. Russell, who had spun, stopped to help the marshalls with Zhou's flipped car. When he returned to his car it was not running so he could not continue.
Race control red-flagged the race due to both crashes.

An array of brushes under each car makes random contact with the strips, and the voltage polarity on each contact is arranged to always provide a correct and complete circuit to operate the vehicle.
A third method is used on Quantum-class cruise ships, where bumper cars run on electric batteries. This avoids the conductive floor/ceiling of the traditional bumper car setup, allowing the SeaPlex venue to be convertible from a bumper-car ride to a multipurpose gym (basketball court). The disadvantage is that these ships' bumper cars take several hours to recharge.
The metal floor is usually set up as a rectangular or oval track, and graphite is sprinkled on the floor to decrease friction. A rubber bumper surrounds each vehicle, and drivers either ram or dodge each other as they travel. The controls are usually an accelerator and a steering wheel. The cars can be made to go backwards by turning the steering wheel far enough in either direction

Leah who had been converted to the Christian faith at a Camp Meeting at Cherry Lane, Lymm, in 1828, started the Church in a room above a bake house on Knutsford Road. The bake house stood behind what is today a modern detached house which is the third property from the junction of Knutsford and Chester Roads.
For 26 years the small fellowship went from strength to strength. By 1880 it became clear that the room above the bake house was no longer large enough. The Church Leaders decided to buy a plot of land on Chester Road and to erect a new Church for the expanding congregation. After some local opposition the Church was opened in 1881. The building today is part of a private residence between Euclid Avenue and Clarence Road.
Despite the Independent Methodists in Grappenhall having a new church building the congregation began a period of decline. The situation was reported to the Warrington Circuit of Independent Methodist Churches who appointed Robert Henshall and Arthur Jolley to endeavour to revive and resuscitate the Christian Cause at Grappenhall
Church Leaders decided to look for a new plot of land on which to build a larger building. Land in the Cross Lane area of Grappenhall was sought. After much negotiation land was bought on the corner of Knutsford Road and Knutsford Old Road. The new Church building opened in 1913 was located just outside the Parish of Grappenhall in what was then known as 'Latchford Without' and today is part of Stockton Heath Parish.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AYHHNJ - Every year on June 16th many James Joyce enthusiasts, some dressed in Edwardian costume, re-enact this epic pub crawl, and though it's referred to as a ?literary event' it's basically an excuse for lots of drinking broken up by a bit of walking and the reading of various excerpts from the book. The event is known as Bloomsday and the first mention of such a thing was found in a letter from James Joyce to a Miss Weaver, dated June 27th 1924 and referring to a group of people who observe what they call ?Bloom's Day' ? June 16th. The book itself must have made a big impression on someone back in the 1970s as the hotel was named after one of the story's main characters.
Fast forward to the present day and we find James Earley, a Dublin artist whose works are based on his family's artistic past within Irish stained glass art. James has been producing artworks in public spaces since 1997, playing an active role in the Irish graffiti movement, and from 2010 has developed abstract figurative works based on the principles and beauty of stained glass. He has travelled widely with his art throughout Europe, Asia and America and has worked on a variety of large-scale projects with various art-based organisations and multi-nationals which support the arts.
In 2014 James was commissioned to paint the exterior of Blooms Hotel
the project took a full year to complete and to date is the largest public artwork in Ireland. When I first saw it I was quite surprised that this street art wasn't just part of one wall, it was the whole exterior of the building. With my liking for bright colours and abstract, psychedelic designs I just had to take a few photos although the names on the pictures meant nothing to me at the time until I did a bit of later research and found the connection to James Joyce's Ulysses

Fixed penalty notices were originally introduced for parking and motoring offences, currently continuing in Great Britain under powers provided by the Road Traffic Act 1991 as well as in Northern Ireland
in many areas this style of enforcement has been taken over from police by local authorities. 15 July 1858 ? 14 June 1928) was a British political activist who organised the UK suffragette movement and helped women win the right to vote. In 1999, Time named her as one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century, stating that she shaped an idea of objects for our time and shook society into a new pattern from which there could be no going back. She was widely criticised for her militant tactics, and historians disagree about their effectiveness, but her work is recognised as a crucial element in achieving women's suffrage in the United Kingdom.
Born in the Moss Side district of Manchester to politically active parents, Pankhurst was introduced at the age of 14 to the women's suffrage movement. She founded and became involved with the Women's Franchise League, which advocated suffrage for both married and unmarried women. When that organisation broke apart, she tried to join the left-leaning Independent Labour Party through her friendship with socialist Keir Hardie but was initially refused membership by the local branch on account of her sex. While working as a Poor Law Guardian, she was shocked at the harsh conditions she encountered in Manchester's workhouses.
In 1903, Pankhurst founded the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), an all-women suffrage advocacy organisation dedicated to deeds, not words. The group identified as independent from ? and often in opposition to ? political parties. It became known for physical confrontations: its members smashed windows and assaulted police officers. Pankhurst, her daughters, and other WSPU activists received repeated prison sentences, where they staged hunger strikes to secure better conditions, and were often force-fed.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK5M5 - The Gladstone Pottery Museum is a working museum of a medium-sized coal-fired pottery, typical of those once common in the North Staffordshire area of England from the time of the industrial revolution in the 18th century to the mid 20th century. It is a grade II* listed building.[1]
The museum is located in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. It is also included in one of the regional routes of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.[2] Despite the name of the museum, it is a complex of buildings from two works, the Gladstone and the Roslyn.[3] The protected features include the kilns. As there are less than 50 surviving bottle ovens in Stoke-on-Trent (and only a scattering elsewhere in the UK), the museum's kilns along with others in the Longton conservation area represent a significant proportion of the national stock of the structures.
The museum is centred on the Roslyn pottery. It contains two biscuit ovens and two larger glost ovens. In addition are two enamel kilns. A tandem compound steam engine by Marshall & Sons, of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire is in place but it is turned by an electric motor. The two muffle kilns came from elsewhere.
The museum allows the visitor to explore the bottle kilns and exhibits the principal ancillary rooms: the engine house, the slip room, saggar making workshop. It shows aspects of working with clay- including hands on displays of throwing, moulding and decorating. Colour and gilding is presented as interpretive panels.
There is a gallery explaining the history of the tile: how it was pressed glazed and decorated. In one tableau the Gladstone Vase by Frederick Alfred Rhead is displayed.

A project to preserve Warrington's iconic Golden Gates ? which could cost more than ?500,000 ? has started.
The restoration scheme will see the Grade II* listed structure restored to its former glory.
It is believed the gates were originally intended as a gift for Queen Victoria before being purchased for the town by councillor Frederick Monks.
The previous refurbishment was carried out in 1978-79.
However, the council says the 'urban location' and proximity to a 'marine climate' have resulted in the gates showing signs of deterioration.
Having identified the need for repairs, the authority began work with international engineering, design and consultancy company, Ramboll, to identify the right conservators to carry out the specialist work.
Following a tender process, the council selected Hall Conservation ? one of the UK's leading conservation firms ? as the contractor.
Workers are currently at the site as the project to repair, enhance and preserve the gates gathers pace.
Once the dismantling process is completed, they will be transported to Hall Conservation's workshop, where they will be fully inspected, in conjunction with Ramboll, and repaired and repainted before they return to Warrington.
It is planned that they will be reconstructed on site early next year.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG39NX - Early in his career, in 1896, Mackintosh met Catherine Cranston (widely known as Kate Cranston or simply Miss Cranston), an entrepreneurial local business woman who was the daughter of a Glasgow tea merchant and a strong believer in temperance.
The temperance movement was becoming increasingly popular in Glasgow at the turn of the century and Miss Cranston had conceived the idea of a series of art tearooms, venues where people could meet to relax and enjoy non-alcoholic refreshments in a variety of different rooms within the same building. This proved to be the start of a long working relationship between Miss Cranston and Mackintosh. Between 1896 and 1917 he designed and re-styled interiors in all four of her Glasgow tearooms, often in collaboration with his wife Margaret MacDonald.
Mackintosh's redesigned external facade was a carefully considered asymmetric, abstractly modelled composition with shallow curves on some areas of the surface, and varying depths of recesses to windows and the main entrance. The composition respected the urban context of the neighbouring buildings, matching the major cornice lines and heights of adjoining buildings, whilst still exploring emerging ideas of Art Nouveau and the modern movement.
The ground floor entrance door is placed far to the left of a wide band of fenestration, both of which are recessed below the first-floor level, the location of the Room de Luxe. To emphasise the importance of this room, Mackintosh designed a full width bay window, projecting the facade outwards with a gentle curve. The two storeys above this featured a more regular pattern of fenestration with three individual windows per floor, recessed to different degrees. The asymmetry of the composition was continued by widening the left side windows and creating another gentle curve in this part of the facade, extending through both storeys. Its a historic Art Nouveau Grade II masterpiece of a pub was built in 1905 on the site of a Dominican friary. The building was designed by architect H. Fuller-Clark and artist Henry Poole, both committed to the free-thinking of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Jolly friars appear everywhere in the pub in sculptures, mosaics and reliefs. We are lucky to still be here as our wonderful pub was saved from demolition by a campaign led by Sir John Betjeman.

From its beginnings in 1863, the Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS) became one of the largest co-operative organisations in the UK, changing its name in to The Co-operative Group in 2001. The CWS began in small premises in Manchester and grew to occupy a large part of the city centre, which housed its offices, warehouses and salerooms. It produced the famous CWS Brand goods for co-operative societies throughout the UK. These included food, furniture, clothing and household products.
A Co-operative Wholesale Society, or CWS, is a form of Co-operative Federation (that is, a Co-operative in which all the members are Co-operatives), in this case, the members are usually Consumers' Co-operatives.
According to Co-operative economist Charles Gide, the aim of a Co-operative Wholesale Society is to arrange bulk purchases, and, if possible, organise production. In other words, a Co-operative Wholesale Society is a form of Federal Co-operative through which Consumers' Co-operatives can collectively purchase goods at wholesale prices, and in some cases collectively own factories or farms.

One club in the Republic of Ireland, the City of Dublin Working Men's Club is also affiliated. Most social clubs are affiliated to the CIU.
They do not have to be working men's clubs, although most are. There are many village clubs, Royal British Legions, Labour Clubs, Liberal Clubs, and various other clubs involved. A member of one CIU-affiliated club is entitled to use the facilities of all other CIU clubs, although they will only be entitled to vote in committee elections in clubs where they are full members.
The CIU has two main purposes: to provide a voice at national level for working men's clubs and social clubs, and to provide discounted products and services for its members.
Until 2004, the CIU had its own beer brewed by the Federation brewery in Dunston, Tyne and Wear. Although CIU-affiliated clubs do still receive discounted beer, these discounts are largely passed on to the members, and Federation beer will generally be cheaper than beer available in local pubs. The brewery was taken over by Scottish & Newcastle in 2004 and now brews Newcastle Brown Ale.
Together with other club organisations such as the Royal British Legion, the Association of Conservative Clubs, the National Union of Liberal Clubs and the National Union of Labour and Socialist Clubs, the CIU is part of CORCA (Confederation of Registered Club Associations) which lobbies Parliament on behalf of clubs. This group was active in the debate about smoking: as most clubs are known for working men who like to drink and smoke (in many cases without any women in the bar), there is some concern about the future prospects of clubs.
The CIU holds a national congress every year and as part of its activities runs convalescent homes. In many ways, it could be said to be the oldest surviving friendly society

Temple Bar (in Irish: Barra an Teampaill) is an area on the south bank of the River Liffey in central Dublin, Ireland. Unlike the areas surrounding it, Temple Bar has preserved its medieval street pattern, with many narrow cobbled streets. It is promoted as 'Dublin's cultural quarter' and has a lively night life that is popular with tourists. Temple Bar is in the postcode Dublin 2 (D2), and has an estimated population of 3,000.
The area is bounded by the Liffey to the north, Dame Street to the south, Westmoreland Street to the east and Fishamble Street to the west. It probably got its name from the Temple family, who lived in the area in the 17th century
Sir William Temple, provost of Trinity College Dublin in 1609, had his house and gardens here. However it got its name, the earliest historical reference to the name Temple Bar is on a 1673 map.
Fishamble Street in Temple Bar was the location of the first performance of Handel's Messiah on 13 April 1742. An annual performance of the Messiah is held on the same date at the same location. The republican revolutionary group, the Society of the United Irishmen, was formed at a meeting in a tavern in Eustace Street in 1791.
During the 19th century, the area slowly declined in popularity, and in the 20th century, it suffered from urban decay, with many derelict buildings. Its unfashionability probably saved it from Dublin's property developers, who destroyed much of the city's historic architecture during the 1960s.
In the 1980s, the state-owned transport company C\u00f3ras Iompair \u00c9ireann proposed to buy-up and demolish property in the area and build a bus terminus in its place. While this was in the planning stages, the purchased buildings were let out at low rents, which attracted small shops, artists and galleries to the area.
Protests by An Taisce, residents and traders led to the cancellation of the bus station project, and the Taoiseach Charles Haughey was responsible for securing funding, and, in 1991, the government set up a not-for-profit company called Temple Bar Properties to oversee the regeneration of the area as Dublin's cultural quarter.
In 1999, 'Stag Parties' and 'Hen Nights' were supposedly banned (or discouraged) from Temple Bar, mainly due to drunken loutish behaviour, although this seems to have lapsed. However, noise and anti-social behaviour usually fuelled. by excessive alcohol consumption remain a problem at night

The first Chelsea Bridge was proposed in the 1840s as part of a major development of marshlands on the south bank of the Thames into the new Battersea Park. It was a suspension bridge intended to provide convenient access from the densely populated north bank to the new park. Although built and operated by the government, tolls were charged initially in an effort to recoup the cost of the bridge. Work on the nearby Chelsea Embankment delayed construction and so the bridge, initially called Victoria Bridge, did not open until 1858. Although well-received architecturally, as a toll bridge it was unpopular with the public, and Parliament felt obliged to make it toll-free on Sundays. The bridge was less of a commercial success than had been anticipated, partly because of competition from the newly built Albert Bridge nearby. It was acquired by the Metropolitan Board of Works in 1877, and the tolls were abolished in 1879.
The bridge was narrow and structurally unsound, leading the authorities to rename it Chelsea Bridge to avoid the Royal Family's association with a potential collapse. In 1926 it was proposed that the old bridge be rebuilt or replaced, due to the increased volume of users from population growth, and the introduction of the automobile. It was demolished during 1934?1937, and replaced by the current structure, which opened in 1937.
The new bridge was the first self-anchored suspension bridge in Britain, and was built entirely with materials sourced from within the British Empire. During the early 1950s it became popular with motorcyclists, who staged regular races across the bridge. Gomez are an English indie rock band from Southport, comprising Ian Ball (vocals, guitar), Paul 'Blackie' Blackburn (bass), Tom Gray (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Ben Ottewell (vocals, guitars) and Olly Peacock (drums, synths, computers). The band is distinguished for having three singers and four songwriters, employing traditional and electronic instruments. Their sound is versatile and evades typical music genres falling into blues, indie, alternative, rock, folk, psychedelic and experimental.
Their first album, Bring It On, won the Mercury Music Prize in 1998, giving them much media attention in the UK and throughout the world. Later awards came from the NME and Q Magazine along with a Brit Awards nomination. Bring It On is the debut album that this track comes from.
Gomez entered the recording studios in late 1997 to turn their demos into an album. As well, Gomez toured the UK with Embrace. Their first single '78 Stone Wobble' was released in March 1998 with their debut album Bring It On coming out a month later.
The album received a good critical response from both sides of the Atlantic with Spin calling it a 'damn beautiful album'. Sales in the UK really took off when it won the 1998 Mercury Music Prize for best album beating the favourites Massive Attack's Mezzanine and The Verve's Urban Hymns. 'Get Myself Arrested' and 'Whippin' Piccadilly' were later released as singles.

These platforms were referred to as the MSJAR or South Junction platforms. During the early 1880s the station was enlarged. The MSJAR platforms and the bridge over Fairfield Street were demolished and an island platform, on girder bridges, opened on 16 May 1882.

It happens every year I know, but it always impresses me how nature awakens after those 'Jacks in the green' have done their work over the winter. And, this track says it all to me.
Its from one of my favourite bands BRMC and an album that has most tracks as my 4 &
5 star ratings on my ipod.
The band are named after Marlon Brando's motorcycle gang in the 1953 film The Wild One and are from San Francisco, California, now based in Los Angeles, USA.
Its easy to hear their influences from Led Zeppelin, the BJM, The Stones and The Jesus and Mary Chain in their music.
Early albums were in a very rock vein, with 'Howl' showing a move to a more blues/folk style.
The first album is the best starting point for newcomers to the band. The live DVD recorded in Glasgow, Berlin, and Dublin during the Baby 81 world tour is also worth grabbing.

A church at Winwick is recorded in the Domesday Book. The earliest parts of the present church are the bases of the north arcade which date from the early 13th century, and the walls of the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber which are dated 1330. The west tower was built in 1358, and the walls and north arcade of the nave (except for the Legh Chapel and the organ chamber) date from 1580.
The south porch was added in 1720, and the south arcade of the nave was rebuilt in 1836 reusing earlier stones. The chancel, sanctuary and vestry were rebuilt by Pugin in 1847\u201349 for the 13th Earl of Derby. Much damage had been done to the church in 1648 when Oliver Cromwell stationed his troops in the church after the Battle of Red Bank.
It is particularly good in spring when all the cherry trees in the graveyard blossom. A very unique building any time of year.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8FBAD - An engine order telegraph or E.O.T., often also called a Chadburn, is a communications device used on a ship (or submarine) for the pilot on the bridge to order engineers in the engine room to power the vessel at a certain desired speed. In early vessels, from the 1800s until about 1950, the device usually consisted of a round dial about nine inches in diameter with a knob at the center attached to one or more handles, and an indicator pointer on the face of the dial. Modern E.O.T.s on vessels which still use them use electronic light and sound signals.
Traditional E.O.T.s required a pilot wanting to change speed to ring the telegraph on the bridge, moving the handle to a different position on the dial. This would ring a bell in the engine room and move their pointer to the position on the dial selected by the bridge. The engineers hear the bell and move their handle to the same position to signal their acknowledgment of the order, and adjust the engine speed accordingly. Such an order is called a bell, for example the order for a ship's maximum speed, flank speed, is called a flank bell.
For urgent orders requiring rapid acceleration, the handle is moved three times so that the engine room bell is rung three times. This is called a cavitate bell because the rapid acceleration of the ship's propeller will cause the water around it to cavitate, causing a lot of noise and wear on the propellers. Such noise is undesirable during conflicts because it can give away a vessel's position.
On most modern vessels the EOT acts as a direct throttle with no intervening engine room personnel.
This one has positions of Full Ahead, Half, Slow, Dead Slow, Stand By, Stop. Astern Finished with engines, dead slow, slow, half and full. German U-boats of World War II contained the dial position Alarmtauchen, the order for a crash dive.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEY8WK - The CIS Tower is an office skyscraper on Miller Street in Manchester, England. It was completed in 1962 and rises to 387 feet (118 m) in height.
The Grade II listed building, which houses the Co-operative Banking Group, is Manchester's second-tallest building and the tallest office building outside London. The tower remained as built for over 40 years until maintenance issues on the service tower required an extensive renovation which included covering its facade in photovoltaic panels.
The tower's design was influenced by Skidmore Owings & Merrill's Inland Steel Building in Chicago after a visit by the architects in 1958. Interiors were designed by Misha Black of the Design Research Unit.
Renovation
Within six months of construction some of the mosaic tiles on the service tower became detached owing to cement failure and lack of expansion joints in the concrete. Although the tower was granted listed building status in 1995, falling tiles were an ongoing problem. English Heritage had to be consulted as alterations could change the building's appearance.
In 2004 CIS consulted Solarcentury with a view to replacing the deteriorating mosaic with 575.5kW of blue building-integrated photovoltaic (PV) cells which would provide a permanent green energy solution, generating approximately 180,000 kWh of electricity per year. The work was completed by Arup and at that time was the largest commercial solar fa??ade in Europe.
The PV cells made by Sharp Electronics began feeding electricity to the National Grid in November 2005. The project, which cost ?5.5 million, was partly funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency which granted ?885,000 and the Energy Savings Trust at the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) contributed ?175,000.
The solar power project was chosen by the DTI as one of the 10 best green energy projects of 2005. Out of sight on the roof are 24 wind turbines generating 10% of the tower's electricity

The Central Bank has raised concerns with the Government that three-quarters of Ireland's ATM network will no longer be under the control of retail banks by the end of the year.
The issue of the ATM network and the closure of bricks and mortar bank branches has been a political hot potato for the Government due to concerns around how older and more vulnerable cohorts of society might cope with such changes.
The regulator has outlined concerns on the matter in a submission to the Department of Finance's Retail Banking Review public consultation.
It said retail banks are selling their off-site ATMs to independent ATM deployers which, it noted, are unregulated. Just 25 per cent of Ireland's ATM network will be owned by retail banks by the end of the year compared to 100 per cent in 2015, it said.
In-branch services are also reducing, it said, with the number of bank branches countrywide set to reduce by 32 per cent compared to 2019.
The trend towards the withdrawal of cash and other in-branch services is being driven by commercial decision making, it said. We expect banks to ensure that the impact of their decisions are considered carefully and with a consumer-focused approach. The impact for all consumers, including those who are vulnerable, must be assessed by banks, to ensure changes to branches and in-branch services are undertaken in an orderly manner. Winstanley was the leader and one of the founders of the English group known as the True Levellers or Diggers. The group occupied formerly common land that had been privatised by enclosures and dug them over, pulling down hedges and filling in ditches, to plant crops. True Levellers was the name they used to describe themselves, whereas the term Diggers was coined by contemporaries.
Early life
Gerrard Winstanley was born on 19 October 1609, the son of Edward Winstanley, mercer, and was baptised in the parish of Wigan, then part of the West Derby hundred of Lancashire. His mother's identity remains unknown and he could have been born anywhere in the parish of Wigan. The parish of Wigan contained the townships of Abram, Aspull, Billinge-and-Winstanley, Dalton, Haigh, Hindley, Ince-in-Makerfield, Orrell, Pemberton, and Upholland, as well as Wigan itself.
In 1630, Winstanley migrated to the City of London, where he became an apprentice to a Merchant Tailor. In 1638, he was admitted as a freeman of the Merchant Tailors' Company, a trade guild. In 1639, he married Susan King, the daughter of William King, a London surgeon.
English Civil Wars
The First English Civil War disrupted Winstanley's business, and in 1643 he was made bankrupt. His father-in-law helped him to move to Cobham, Surrey, where he initially worked as a cowherd

The value of such withdrawals is now at about two-thirds of pre-pandemic levels, albeit they remain relatively stable at ?1 billion per month.

The Central Bank has raised concerns with the Government that three-quarters of Ireland's ATM network will no longer be under the control of retail banks by the end of the year.
The issue of the ATM network and the closure of bricks and mortar bank branches has been a political hot potato for the Government due to concerns around how older and more vulnerable cohorts of society might cope with such changes.
The regulator has outlined concerns on the matter in a submission to the Department of Finance's Retail Banking Review public consultation.
It said retail banks are selling their off-site ATMs to independent ATM deployers which, it noted, are unregulated. Just 25 per cent of Ireland's ATM network will be owned by retail banks by the end of the year compared to 100 per cent in 2015, it said.
In-branch services are also reducing, it said, with the number of bank branches countrywide set to reduce by 32 per cent compared to 2019.
The trend towards the withdrawal of cash and other in-branch services is being driven by commercial decision making, it said. We expect banks to ensure that the impact of their decisions are considered carefully and with a consumer-focused approach. The impact for all consumers, including those who are vulnerable, must be assessed by banks, to ensure changes to branches and in-branch services are undertaken in an orderly manner. The six self-governing Australian colonies that formed the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901 operated their own postal service and issued their own stamps ? see articles on the systems on New South Wales (first stamps issued 1850), Victoria (1850), Tasmania (1853), Western Australia (1854), South Australia (1855) and Queensland (1860). Under section 51(v) of the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution 1900, postal, telegraphic, telephonic, and other like services became a Commonwealth responsibility.
The Commonwealth's Postmaster-General's Department became effective on 1 March 1901 (this agency would be disaggregated on 1 July 1975 in part into the Australian Postal Commission trading as Australia Post). All then-current colony stamps which continued on sale became de facto Commonwealth stamps. Some of these stamps continued to be used for some time following the introduction in 1913 of the Commonwealth's uniform postage stamp series. These stamps continued to be valid for postage until 14 February 1966 when the introduction of decimal currency made all stamps bearing the earlier currency invalid for use.
There have been many special issues. The first Christmas stamp appeared on 6 November 1957. In recent years, designs for the Christmas issue have alternated each year between the religious and the secular. From 1993, in October of every year, Australia Post has commemorated Stamp Collecting month with special issues, typically featuring topics that are of interest to children such as pets, native fauna and space. Commencing with the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, during the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, stamps featuring Australians who have won an Olympic gold medal are issued on the next postal business day after the achievement.
