Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3F0793H - Customers stand beside a closely spaced bank of digital self-service ordering kiosks at the Burger King counter inside Welcome Break Warwick Services on the M40 in Warwickshire. The motorway food court scene illustrates the rapid replacement of conventional staffed tills with touchscreen terminals across fast-food restaurants, transport hubs and other hospitality venues.
The kiosks are intended to accelerate ordering, reduce queues, take card payments and allow customers to browse menus and customise meals without assistance. For the restaurant operator they can increase customer throughput, reduce demands on counter staff, collect sales data and encourage additional purchases through prominent meal upgrades, extras and promotional offers.
However, the experience can feel impersonal and user unfriendly, particularly when several customers are navigating unfamiliar menus simultaneously. Ordering may involve passing through numerous screens, locating products within categories, rejecting optional extras, checking allergen information, selecting collection options and completing a contactless payment before receiving an order number.
Older people, customers with limited digital confidence, visitors with impaired vision or dexterity, people who struggle with written English and travellers under time pressure may find the process confusing or inaccessible. Glare, small text, unclear navigation, timeouts, payment failures and printers that do not issue a receipt can add frustration. The tall fixed screens and lack of seating may also present practical barriers for some disabled users.
Although staff assistance is reportedly available at the northbound Burger King, the image conveys a system in which customers are largely left to work through the electronic ordering process themselves. A staffed counter remains important for accessibility, cash users, complex dietary questions and anyone unable or unwilling to use a touchscreen.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EX1RG0 - Applegreen Electric vehicle charger displaying an out-of-service message at Welcome Break Abington Services beside the M74 in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The touchscreen reads Well that's inconvenient! But we are waiting on an engineer to fix this machine. Thank you , showing that the individual charging unit was unavailable when photographed. The turquoise Applegreen Electric branding, payment terminal and charging instructions identify the equipment as part of the service area's public rapid-charging provision.
Abington Services stands at Junction 13 of the M74 and is an important stopping point for long-distance traffic travelling between northwest England, Glasgow, Edinburgh and destinations farther north in Scotland. For electric-car drivers, a defective charger at a strategic motorway location can cause delay, require use of another available unit or force an unplanned diversion. Such breakdowns contribute to range anxiety, particularly during busy holiday periods, poor weather or journeys made with limited remaining battery capacity.
The service area lists charging provision from Applegreen Electric, GRIDSERVE Electric Highway and Tesla, so the image records the failure of one machine rather than establishing that every charger at the location was unavailable. Even so, the fault illustrates the importance of dependable maintenance, live availability information, adequate charger numbers and resilient power infrastructure as battery-electric vehicle use increases.
The photograph is relevant to editorial coverage of the UK transition from petrol and diesel vehicles, motorway charging reliability, transport decarbonisation and consumer confidence in electric travel. It also represents the practical difficulties encountered by drivers when public charging hardware is broken, awaiting repair or temporarily out of operation on a major cross-border route between England and Scotland

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RXX2A9 - Birmingham Clean Air Zone
The Clean Air Zone is the area inside the A4540 Middleway Ring Road. It does not include the Middleway itself. It is operational every day, 24 hours a day. You might have to pay to drive inside it.
There are signs around the Clean Air Zone so drivers can see where it is.
Instead of driving in the Clean Air Zone, you could:
walk or cycle - there are lots of walking and cycling routes
take public transport - use our journey planner to find the best route
Check if you have to pay
Drivers of the most polluting vehicles will have to pay to drive in the Clean Air Zone. You will not have to pay if:
you drive an electric or hybrid vehicle
your car meets emission standards

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DAPRB0 - Raymond Anthony Codling was an Inspector with Greater Manchester Police who was murdered at Birch Services on the M62 motorway near Heywood, Greater Manchester, in 1989.
In the early hours of 14 September 1989, Codling, aged 49, in company with Sergeant James Bowden, 45, arrived at Birch motorway services between junctions 18 and 19, westbound, on the M62, looking for a white van, the details for which had been circulated by radio. The officers saw a motorcyclist, whom they approached, and he provided them with his details, which later proved to be false. A short time later they saw the man again, acting suspiciously, and the two officers approached him.
Bowden noticed that the man had a large knife in his belt and was holding his right hand inside his jacket. Bowden attempted to seize the knife but the man pulled back and drew out a 9 mm pistol. The man fired almost immediately at Bowden, but he escaped injury as the bullet was fired across his body and was deflected by the thick leather cover of his notebook in a breast pocket. The man then shot Codling in the chest
as he laid on the ground injured, a second shot was fired at Codling, killing him. Bowden attempted to give chase but was hit by a gunshot in the leg and was forced to take cover
he later recovered from emergency surgery. The suspect escaped.
After a manhunt, the gunman, later identified as Anthony Hughes from Baguley, was traced to a garage in Kendray, South Yorkshire. When officers entered they found Hughes' body
he had killed himself with the same gun used in the attack on Codling and Bowden. No motive was ever established for the attack, except that Hughes had previously carried out a series of armed robberies, had served 15 years in prison for a string of violent offences, and had indicated his desire to kill a police officer following an earlier court appearance for a minor offence for which he was fined.
In 1991, a memorial to Codling was unveiled at the place of his death

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EYPFFA - Tesla, following the settlement of a long-running legal case, is finally going to bring some Superchargers to the UK's motorways. Seven new Supercharging stations, all located at motorway service stations, are now in the process of being built, with more coming soon.
Heretofore, Tesla's somewhat anaemic Supercharger roll-out in the UK had mostly been located in cities
not exactly the ideal place to charge up your car for a long-distance drive. Some Superchargers were located near a motorway or main road, but not in motorway service stations.
As reported by Engadget, the dearth of motorway Superchargers was apparently due to a legal dispute between Tesla and Ecotricity, a UK-based company that already had a large number of electric vehicle charging points across the country, including exclusivity deals at motorway service stations.
According to a few newspaper and website reports, Tesla approached Ecotricity prior to the launch of right-hand-drive Model S in the UK, to try and strike some kind of deal to get Supercharging stations into motorway service stations. Seemingly, at some point that deal turned sour, with Ecotricity's founder saying back in May 2014 that this is nothing more than an attempted smash and grab raid. Soon after, both companies hunkered down in litigation land, suing and countersuing each other. This week they finally reached an out-of-court settlement.
Yesterday, somewhat suspiciously and/or coincidentally, both Tesla and Ecotricity published very similar blog posts. Neither post referenced the other company, instead focusing on their commitment to grow their UK electric vehicle charging networks. While the details of the settlement are confidential, given that Tesla is now allowed to build Superchargers at motorway service stations, it would appear to have got its way.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EYPFFC - Tesla, following the settlement of a long-running legal case, is finally going to bring some Superchargers to the UK's motorways.

70 is the atomic number of ytterbium, a lanthanide. Also, 70 years denotes the expiration of copyrights. In miles per hour, 70 is the national speed limit in the United Kingdom (for cars and motorcycles on the best grades of road). The number 70 is frequently referenced by the musical duo Boards of Canada: they have songs titled 'Sixtyten' (Music Has the Right to Children, 1998) and 'The Smallest Weird Number' (Geogaddi, 2002), and their record label is named Music70.
Strangely, the French do not have a word for 70, instead using 'soixante-dix' (60 + 10). Other French-speaking countries such as Belgium, Switzerland, Aosta Valley and Jersey do have a word for it, using 'septante'.
70 appears many times in the Christian bible and in Islam. Seventy souls went down to Egypt to begin the Hebrew's Egyptian exile (Genesis 46:27). According to Jewish tradition, there is a core of 70 nations and 70 world languages. In Jewish tradition, there were 70 men in the Great Sanhedrin, the Supreme Court of ancient Israel. (Sanhedrin 1:4). Seventy elders were assembled by Moses on God's command in the desert (Numbers 11:16-30). In the Gospel of Luke 10:1-24, Jesus appoints Seventy Disciples and sends them out in pairs to preach the Gospel. In Islamic history, 70 are the number of the dead among prophet Muhammad's adversary during the Battle of Badr. 70 are the number of Prophet Muhammad's followers martyred at the Battle of Uhud. In Shia Islam, 70 are the number of martyr among Imam Hussein's followers during the tragedy of Karbala.
Its factorization makes it a sphenic number. 70 is a Pell number and a generalized heptagonal number, one of only two numbers to be both. Also, it is the seventh pentagonal number and the fourth triskaidecagonal number, as well as the fifth pentatope number. It is the smallest weird number.
The sum of the first twenty four squares starting from one is seventy squared. This relates seventy to the Leech lattice and thus string theory. Since it is possible to find sequences of 70 consecutive integers such that each inner member shares a factor with either the first or the last member, 70 is an Erd\u0151s\u2013Woods number. In base 10, it is a Harshad number.

Forty-seven is the fifteenth prime number, a safe prime, the thirteenth supersingular prime, and the sixth Lucas prime. Forty-seven is a highly cototient number. It is an Eisenstein prime with no imaginary part. Its the atomic number of silver and the atomic weight of Titanium.
Fortyseven has been the favourite number of Pomona College, California, USA, since 1964. A mathematical proof, written in 1964 by Professor Donald Bentley, supposedly demonstrates that all numbers are equal to 47. However, Bentley offered it as a 'joke proof' to further a popular student research project that listed real and imaginative '47 sightings'. Bentley used the invalid proof to introduce his students to the concept of mathematical proofs. The proof used limits to show that the sum of the two equal sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the base side. Bentley chose forty-seven as the base side, but he could have used any number.
Joe Menosky graduated from Pomona College in 1979 and went on to become one of the story writers of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Menosky 'infected' other Star Trek writers with an enthusiasm for the number 47. As a result, 47, its reverse 74, its multiples, or combinations of 47 occur surreptitiously in almost every episode of the program and its spin-offs Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise. Forty-seven might be mentioned in dialogue or appear on a computer screen, for example:
- In the Voyager episode 'Parallax', we learn that the Emergency Medical Holographic Channel is 47 and that the EMH has the experience of 47 individual medical officers.
- In the 2009 film Star Trek, the Enterprise was built in Sector 47 of the Riverside Shipyards, and 47 Klingon ships are said to have been destroyed by Nero's ship, the Narada.
Washroom Hygiene monitors are all the rage these days. They come in a range of Standard, standard Plus, Professional, Professional Plus and Ultima (which can count down, has customer feed back buttons, option to bleep if poor or fair pressed more than say 5 times within a countdown period, data showing what time buttons were pressed, Delay on buttons pressed). So pretty much all as would be needed from a bog standard clock.

Five is the third prime number.
5 is the third Sophie Germain prime, the first safe prime, the third Catalan number, and the third Mersenne prime exponent. Five is the first Wilson prime and the third factorial prime, also an alternating factorial. Five is the first good prime.
Five is a congruent number. Five is conjectured to be the only odd untouchable number and if this is the case then five will be the only odd prime number that is not the base of an aliquot tree.
Vulgar fractions with 5 or 2 in the denominator do not yield infinite decimal expansions, unlike expansions with all other prime denominators, because they are prime factors of ten, the base. When written in the decimal system, all multiples of 5 will end in either 5 or 0.
Five is the atomic number of boron, also the number of appendages on most starfish, which exhibit pentamerism.
In the Christian religion, there are traditionally Five Wounds of Jesus Christ in Christianity: the Scourging at the Pillar, the Crowning with Thorns, the wounds in Christ's hands, the wounds in Christ's feet, and the Side Wound of Christ.
In Islam, Muslims pray to Allah five times a day.
The M5 is a motorway in England. It runs from a junction with the M6 at West Bromwich near Birmingham to Exeter in Devon. The M5 follows the route of the A38 road quite closely. The two deviate slightly around Bristol (or Bristle as the natives call it) and the area south of the city (junctions 16 to 22). The A38 goes straight through the centre of Bristol and passes by Bristol Airport
whereas the M5 skirts around both of them, with access to the airport from junctions 18, 19 or 22. The A38 continues south from where the M5 finishes in Devon.
In October 2009, workmen clearing the bottom of the M5 at Junction 14 discovered a human skeleton in a black bin bag dumped in the bushes at the side of the motorway. The police were called soon after, and it was soon established that the bones were those of a young female. A few days later, DNA found on the remains confirmed that the body was that of Melanie Hall, who disappeared in June 1996 after a night out in Bath, and who'd never been found. Melanie's dental records confirmed that the body was hers, and the police began a formal investigation into her murder.

The tower is unique to the services, but Rank built slightly smaller versions at other services of theirs such as Hilton Park, which has suffered exactly the same fate. Although the one here is the 'daddy' (as they say).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWEN - Artisan Bread, M5 Gloucester Farm Shop Motorway Service area, Gloucestershire, England, UK - how all services area cafes should be has the strength of a real-world scene: ordinary enough to be believable, but specific enough to support precise editorial use. Gloucester Services became notable for treating motorway food as a regional farm-shop offer rather than a standardised fast-food stop, putting local produce and craft presentation into a heavily car-based setting. The subject can illustrate food miles, motorway culture, consumer expectations, rural supply chains, premium convenience retail and the reinvention of service stations as destinations rather than necessities. The location detail, Gloucester, strengthens searches for regional features, travel pages, local-history pieces and news use where a named place matters. Relevant editorial themes include food retail, British food, hospitality and farm shop, with each theme rooted in the visible subject, place or activity. It can work both as a straightforward location record and as a wider editorial illustration of the habits, services, buildings, symbols and small commercial details that shape everyday life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EYPFF9 - Tesla, following the settlement of a long-running legal case, is finally going to bring some Superchargers to the UK's motorways.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2Y6 - Hartshead Moor services is a motorway service station on the M62 near Bradford, West Yorkshire. It is the highest service station in the United Kingdom
On 4 February 1974 a bomb was detonated on a coach ferrying British Army and Royal Air Force personnel from and to the bases at Catterick and Darlington during a period of industrial strike action on the trains. The incident occurred between junctions 26 and 27, shortly after midnight while most of those aboard were sleeping. Twelve people died and more than fifty were injured.
A memorial plaque was installed in memory of those who were killed, situated in the entrance hall of the westbound section of the service area, which was used as a first aid station for those wounded in the blast. A memorial service was held at the service area in February 2004. In 2009 a new memorial was created outside the service area at the wishes of the relatives of those killed
In December 2005 the RSPCA, working with the BBC filmed the sale of an African puff adder at the service area, exploiting a legal loophole to sell on the snake. It was discovered in April 2006 that the service area's toilets were frequently being used for homosexual activity.
Alpine Cleaning Services, who successfully pitched for investment on the television show Dragons' Den, opened one of their first truck-washing facilities at the service area in August 2006.
The service station is one of fourteen for which large murals were commissioned from artist David Fisher in the 1990s, designed to reflect the local area and history

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWNP - Photo shows Farm shop entrance,M5 Gloucester Farm Shop Motorway Service area, Gloucestershire, England, UK. The image is commercially useful for stories about high streets, independent traders, market halls, shopping habits, visitor footfall, town centre regeneration and local economies. Retail and market photographs with readable frontage, product display or a recognisable location help illustrate how everyday spending, tourism and small business activity are changing across Britain. The supplied location evidence places the subject at or near England, UK, Gloucestershire, which adds value for buyers searching by town, city, region or postcode. Visible wording, branding or signage noted in the supplied caption should be kept as search evidence because it helps buyers looking for specific editorial concepts, public messages, commercial streets, transport detail or local identity. Season and footfall can be inferred only from the image, while the retail or market subject is explicit in the supplied caption. It should work for editorial buyers needing authentic, non-staged British or travel imagery for news, magazine, blog, local government, heritage, housing, transport, tourism, retail, public policy or social commentary use. The caption should be checked against the visible photograph before upload so that any readable signs, weather, time of day and people context are accurately reflected without overstating facts not shown in the image. The strongest sales value is the combination of named subject, real location and everyday documentary style, giving picture editors a flexible image that can sit alongside features, opinion pieces, explainers, historical retrospectives and local news.
