Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM9906 - A tight, documentary close-up of a retail shop window promotion in Manchester during November, dominated by bold illuminated text reading BLACK FRIDAY EVENT and UP TO 30% OFF. The typography is clean and high-contrast, designed for instant legibility from the pavement, with the bright lettering standing out against a dark background that suggests evening or indoor low-light conditions. To the left edge of the frame, a large display figure or mannequin is partially visible, hinting at a curated in-store visual merchandising setup without revealing a specific brand identity. Reflections and glossy surfaces add a modern, commercial feel, reinforcing the physical, bricks-and-mortar shopping context rather than online retail.
The image is well suited to editorial and commercial themes around seasonal discounting, high street promotions, consumer behaviour, and the annual Black Friday sales cycle in the UK. It can illustrate stories about retail footfall, marketing tactics, price-led campaigns, and pre-Christmas shopping activity, as well as broader business coverage of the retail economy and consumer spending trends. The clear, readable wording makes it highly searchable and immediately usable as a generic visual for Black Friday, sale events, and in-store discount messaging in a British city setting.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM97X3 - A documentary indoor view of a full-size Halloween mummy figure on display inside Stockport Market, photographed as part of seasonal autumn decorations. The prop is a stylised, cartoonishly frightening mummy with bandage-like wrapping, an exaggerated facial expression and exposed skeletal details, standing upright on a metal base. The setting reads clearly as an indoor public venue or market environment, with shuttered stall panels, painted trim and practical fixtures visible around the edges of the frame, including fire extinguishers and wall notices that add a recognisable working building context rather than a staged studio scene.
The image suits editorial and commercial themes around Halloween as a UK seasonal event, market-led promotions, and how town-centre venues use themed displays to attract families and increase footfall during October and half-term. The composition is straightforward and readable, making it useful as a general illustration for Halloween decorations, spooky-season retail, community events, and indoor seasonal marketing in British towns. The indoor lighting and everyday background details help anchor the photograph in real-world place and activity, giving it value for documentary coverage of local markets and seasonal public programming.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6EP - A large promotional sign bearing the message Discover Dundee Waterfront, photographed in Dundee city centre, Scotland, UK. The sign forms part of the city's wider place-marketing and regeneration messaging, encouraging residents and visitors to engage with Dundee's transformed waterfront along the River Tay.
Dundee's waterfront redevelopment represents one of the most significant urban regeneration projects in Scotland in recent decades, reshaping former industrial docklands into a mixed-use cultural, commercial and public realm destination. High-profile developments in the area include museums, public spaces, improved pedestrian routes and new connections between the city centre and the river, signalling Dundee's shift from an industrial port to a modern, design-led city.
The phrase Discover Dundee reflects broader strategies used by post-industrial cities to reframe their identity through culture, architecture and tourism, positioning place as an experience rather than solely an economic centre. Such branding initiatives are increasingly common across UK and European cities seeking to attract visitors, inward investment and civic pride through visual messaging in prominent public spaces.
Photographed in daylight with leaf shadows cast across the sign's surface, the image combines clean typographic design with subtle natural elements, reinforcing themes of accessibility, renewal and everyday urban life. The photograph holds strong editorial value for stories relating to urban regeneration, city branding, tourism development, economic transition and contemporary Scottish identity, making it suitable for use in travel features, planning publications, policy discussion and cultural commentary.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJX9 - A large, colourful mural in Manchester city centre celebrating The Hundred cricket competition and the Manchester Originals team. The artwork features both male and female players presented together, reflecting the competition's emphasis on gender equality and equal visibility within professional sport.
The mural forms part of a wider effort to rebrand cricket for a younger, more diverse and urban audience, using street art aesthetics rather than traditional sporting imagery. Bold colours, simplified forms and dynamic poses convey energy, accessibility and immediacy, aligning cricket with contemporary city life rather than exclusive sporting venues.
Photographed in August 2025 during the summer season of The Hundred, the mural functions as both public art and promotional messaging, embedding elite sport directly into the everyday streetscape. Its placement within Manchester reflects the city's strong tradition of large-scale murals and its willingness to integrate sport, culture and regeneration within the public realm.
The image is well suited for editorial use covering modern British sport, cricket's cultural reinvention, gender equality in sport, urban public art, summer events, and the evolving relationship between cities and professional athletics.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6GX - A vertical street banner displayed on a lamppost in Manchester city centre, promoting Oasis Live '25, a run of major outdoor concerts by the Manchester band Oasis at Heaton Park, Sheepfoot Lane, Manchester M25 2SW, England. The banner features black-and-white portraits of band members Liam Gallagher and Noel Gallagher, alongside the official MCR Live '25 branding used across the city for large-scale summer music events.
The Oasis concerts, scheduled for 11, 12, 16, 19 and 20 July 2025, mark the band's first live performances together in many years and have attracted significant national and international attention. Heaton Park, one of Europe's largest municipal parks, has previously hosted landmark performances by major global artists and is closely associated with Manchester's live-music identity.
The image reflects Manchester's continued promotion of its musical heritage and its role as a major UK destination for live music tourism. Photographed in daylight conditions, the scene shows the banner within the urban streetscape, emphasising the city's cultural branding and anticipation surrounding one of the most high-profile British music reunions of the decade.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAX84 - This image shows an original hand drawn and photocopied poster from 1988 advertising an appearance by Frank Sidebottom, the surreal comic creation of Chris Sievey. The poster announces that Frank Sidebottom would cut the ribbon for the official opening of the Timperley Aquatics water garden on 2 April 1988, at 10.30am GMT, with a live appearance lasting five minutes.
The artwork features Frank Sidebottom's instantly recognisable wide eyed papier mache head, rendered in a deliberately na??ve black and white illustration style. Surrounding text and drawings, including fish motifs and playful handwritten lettering, reflect the DIY, low budget aesthetic that defined Sievey's work and the wider British alternative comedy scene of the 1980s.
The poster references Radio Timperley and includes local contact details, reinforcing the strong connection between Frank Sidebottom and community level events in south Manchester. Rather than mainstream venues, Sievey frequently performed at small local openings, shops, and civic events, using absurdity and deadpan humour to parody celebrity culture and public ceremonies.
As a piece of ephemera, the poster offers a valuable snapshot of grassroots British cultural history. It illustrates how alternative comedy, outsider art, and local radio intersected in late twentieth century Manchester, and why Frank Sidebottom became a lasting cult figure associated with Timperley, Greater Manchester, and northern English eccentricity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T00PER - High Speed 2 (HS2) is a planned high-speed railway line and network of passenger train services in England. It will consist of a new railway line between the West Midlands and London, with a branch to Birmingham, and a network of train services that will use the new line and existing conventional track to reach their destinations in the Midlands, Northern England, and Scotland. HS2 will be Britain's second purpose-built high-speed line, the first being High Speed 1, which connects London to the Channel Tunnel. The majority of the project is planned to be completed between 2029 and 2033. A 2019 review of the project, as then planned, estimated that it would cost up to ?87 billion
however, this is estimated to have risen to approximately ?100 billion in 2023.
The new line will run between London Euston railway station and Fradley in southern Staffordshire, with stations at Old Oak Common, in northwest London, and Birmingham Interchange, near Solihull. There will be spurs to a planned station in central Birmingham and a junction with the West Coast Main Line (WCML) at Handsacre, near Lichfield. The rolling stock will run at a maximum speed of 360 km/h (225 mph) and will operate on both HS2 track and existing conventional track
On 4 October 2023 the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that Phase 2 would be abandoned and that responsibility for the Euston connection would be removed from HS2 Ltd

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RX189J - This image shows signage advertising a Final Clearance sale at Hancock & Wood, a retail business located on Bridge Street in Warrington, Cheshire, England. The photograph captures the visual language commonly associated with shop closures, including prominent sale wording designed to attract final customers as a business winds down trading. The scene reflects the pressures facing independent retailers on UK high streets.
Bridge Street forms part of Warrington's main town centre shopping area and has historically been home to a mix of independent shops and national chains. In recent years, like many British towns, Warrington has experienced changes in retail patterns driven by rising costs, online shopping, and shifting consumer behaviour, leading to an increase in clearance sales, store closures, and vacant units.
The image conveys themes of economic change, retail decline, and the challenges facing traditional high street businesses in England. It is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to UK retail, town centre economics, small business closures, shopping habits, economic downturn, and the transformation of British high streets.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGJ3J - This image shows the exterior of a Clintons greeting card shop at Weaver Square on Witton Street in Northwich town centre, Cheshire. The store occupies a prominent corner unit within a traditional half-timbered style building, featuring black-and-white detailing that reflects historic architectural influences often replicated in British town-centre developments.
Bright red Clintons branding runs across the storefront, while large SALE posters fill the display windows, indicating a retail promotion or clearance period. Additional window graphics advertise card and gift products, reinforcing the shop's focus on greetings cards, seasonal items, and small gifts.
The photograph was taken in daylight under partly cloudy blue skies, with bunting visible overhead, suggesting a festive or community-oriented town-centre environment. Weaver Square is a pedestrianised shopping area forming part of Northwich's retail core, linking national chains with independent shops.
The image captures a familiar scene on the modern UK high street, combining national retail branding, promotional sales activity, and traditional town-centre architecture within a local shopping setting.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCC5PC - This image shows a vintage advertising poster produced by the Cooperative Wholesale Society to promote Penguin umbrellas, a specialist product sold through cooperative retail outlets across Britain. The poster features a humorous illustrated scene of people sheltering beneath umbrellas, accompanied by the slogan It never rains in Manchester ? but you'll see penguins, playing on the city's reputation for wet weather and dry northern wit.
The Cooperative Wholesale Society, commonly known as CWS, was the manufacturing and wholesale arm of the British cooperative movement, supplying goods to local Co-op stores nationwide. Advertising material such as this poster combined practical product promotion with humour and strong graphic identity, helping distinguish cooperative goods from private retailers during the mid twentieth century.
The illustration style, limited colour palette, and bold typography are characteristic of postwar British commercial art, reflecting a period when posters were a primary means of mass communication. The use of penguins as a visual motif reinforced brand recognition for Penguin umbrellas while appealing to family audiences and everyday consumers.
Closely associated with Manchester and the wider Lancashire cooperative tradition, this poster also reflects the cultural values of the movement, including accessibility, shared ownership, and trust in everyday essentials. The image is well suited for editorial use covering British social history, cooperative retailing, vintage advertising, graphic design, and the cultural identity of northern England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64RFH - This image shows a promotional banner advertising Lancaster's seasonal summer markets, strung across a city centre street and framed by rows of colourful triangular bunting. The banner announces a summer market date and opening times, celebrating local traders, seasonal produce, and community activity in the heart of the city.
Seasonal markets play an important role in Lancaster's civic and economic life, supporting independent businesses, encouraging footfall, and creating a festival atmosphere within the historic urban environment. The bunting and signage transform the street into a shared public space, signalling celebration, sociability, and local pride.
Historic stone buildings provide a strong architectural backdrop, reinforcing Lancaster's identity as a traditional English city with a well-preserved townscape. The clear blue sky and bright colours emphasise the summery character of the event and the positive, welcoming tone of the promotion.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited for editorial use covering UK market culture, town-centre regeneration, community events, local economies, and the visual language of civic celebration in English towns and cities.

Prominently credited on the poster are performers and contributors including Denis Noble, Joyce Blackham, Richard Curnock, Serafina Dileo, Raf de la Torre, Juliet Morell, and musical director Anatole Fistoulari. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNFB - This image shows an electronic roadside speed indicator sign on Bellhouse Lane in Grappenhall, near Warrington in Cheshire. The sign displays the message Your Speed 37 followed by Slow Down, indicating that a passing vehicle is exceeding the 30 mph speed limit in this residential area.
Speed indicator devices of this type are widely used across the United Kingdom as part of traffic calming and road safety initiatives. Unlike enforcement cameras, they provide immediate visual feedback to drivers, highlighting excessive speed and encouraging behavioural change without issuing penalties. When drivers exceed the limit, warning messages such as Slow Down are triggered to reinforce compliance.
The photograph captures a car passing the sign with visible motion blur, emphasising the contrast between the digital warning and real-world driving behaviour. Installed on a tree-lined suburban road, the sign reflects local authority efforts to improve safety for residents, pedestrians, and other road users.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering road safety, speed management, transport policy, residential traffic issues, community safety schemes, and the use of technology to influence driver behaviour on UK roads.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PKA5JD - Why do a sleepout in the Cathedral?
The Whitechapel Centre is Liverpool's leading homeless charity, helping those living without a home. Liverpool Cathedral is a vibrant, active place that helps the people of the city in many ways through schools, family workshops, foodbanks and community markets, volunteering, or just being a safe place to keep warm. Together, we are working really hard to make sure everyone in Liverpool can have a place to call home and live to their full potential. Unfortunately, more and more people need our help each year.
?
We know that many people want to help those they see sleeping on the streets or who are struggling but it can be difficult to know the best way to help. By taking part in the Cathedral Sleepout and raising as much money as possible, you'll enable us to give people food, find them a home and teach them new skills.
?
The Cathedral Sleepout is a very rare opportunity to sleep inside the fantastic Liverpool Cathedral. The Sleepout doesn't compare to sleeping outside on the streets, but we want to help people understand how difficult it might be when you don't have a place to go.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJ2A3T - Bacharach (pronunciation (help?info), also known as Bacharach am Rhein) is a town in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde of Rhein-Nahe, whose seat is in Bingen am Rhein, although that town is not within its bounds.
The original name Baccaracus suggests a Celtic origin. Above the town stands Stahleck Castle (Burg Stahleck), now a youth hostel.
Geography
Location
The town lies in the Rhine Gorge, 48 km south of Koblenz.
Constituent communities
Bacharach is divided into several Ortsteile. The outlying centre of Steeg lies in the Steeg Valley (Steeger Tal) off to the side, away from the Rhine. This glen lies between Medenscheid and Neurath to the south and Henschhausen to the north on the heights.
History
In the early 11th century, Bacharach had its first documentary mention. It may have been that as early as the 7th century, the kingly domain passed into Archbishop of Cologne Kunibert's ownership
pointing to this is a Kunibertskapelle (chapel) on the spot where now stands the Wernerkapelle. The V??gte of the Cologne estate were the Elector of the Palatinate, who over time pushed back Cologne's influence.
Caring for and maintaining Bacharach's building monuments, spurred on in the early 20th century by the Rhenish Association for Monument Care and Landscape Preservation (Rheinischer Verein f?r Denkmalpflege und Landschaftsschutz) which took on the then highly endangered town wall and Stahleck Castle ruin jobs, and the great dedication of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate to the Wernerkapelle have seen to it that Bacharach is still a jewel of the Rheinromantik and a multifaceted documentary site of mediaeval architecture on the Middle Rhine. The Wernerkapelle ruin is under monumental protection and before it a plaque has been placed recalling the inhuman crimes against Jewish residents and also containing a quotation from a prayer by Pope John XXIII for a change in Christians' thinking in their relationship

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF77X - Buzzcocks are an English punk rock band formed in Bolton, England in 1976 by singer-songwriter-guitarist Pete Shelley and singer-songwriter Howard Devoto. They are regarded as a seminal influence on the Manchester music scene, the independent record label movement, punk rock, power pop, and pop punk. They achieved commercial success with singles that fused pop craftsmanship with rapid-fire punk energy. These singles were collected on Singles Going Steady, an acclaimed compilation album described by music journalist and critic, Ned Raggett, as a punk masterpiece.
Devoto and Shelley chose the name Buzzcocks after reading the headline, It's the Buzz, Cock!, in a review of the TV series Rock Follies in Time Out magazine. The buzz is the excitement of playing on stage
cock is northern English slang meaning friend. They thought it captured the excitement of the nascent punk scene, as well as having humorous sexual connotations following Pete Shelley's time working in a Bolton adult shop.
Devoto left the band in 1977, after which Pete Shelley became the principal singer-songwriter. After releasing three albums, as well as Singles Going Steady, the band broke up in 1981 following a dispute with their then-record label, but reunited in 1989, since releasing six more albums. Shelley died in 2018,[9] but the band has remained active. Steve Diggle, the guitarist and co-founder of the band, is now singer. They added a new guitarist Mani Perazzoli. They are still touring.
Their first UA Buzzcocks single, Orgasm Addict, was a playful examination of compulsive sexuality that was, and remains, uncommonly bold. The BBC refused to play the song, and the single did not sell well. Later, more ambiguous songs staked out a territory defined by Shelley's bisexuality and punk's aversion to serious examination of human sexuality. The next single, What Do I Get? reached the UK top 50 chart. Lipstick, the B-side to Promises, shared the same ascending progression of note

ID Comms supported NatWest Group in the review, which kicked off in January. The appointment covers all the group's brands including RBS, NatWest, Coutts and Ulster Bank.
Margaret Jobling, chief marketing officer of NatWest Group since last year, said: We look forward to working closely with Initiative to deliver our key purpose of helping people, families and businesses to thrive.
The tender process was extremely competitive and we were blown away by the work and talent throughout our review.
Initiative staved off competition from Zenith, which has had the business for nine and a half years, and WPP-backed M/SIX, the sister agency of NatWest's creative shop The & Partnership, to secure the account.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JN1G5J - John Player & Sons, most often known simply as Player's, was a tobacco and cigarette manufacturer based in Nottingham, England. In 1901, the company merged with other companies to form The Imperial Tobacco Company to face competition from US manufacturers. The company also released several series of association football trading cards in the 1930s under the Player's brand.
Nowadays the brands Player and John Player Special are owned and commercialised by Imperial Brands.
History
In March 1820, William Wright set up a small tobacco factory in Craigshill, Livingston, West Lothian. This business expanded and earned Wright a comfortable fortune. John Player bought the business in 1877. He had the Castle Tobacco Factories built in Radford, Nottingham, just west of the city centre. He had three large factory blocks built, but initially only one was used to process and pack tobacco. The other two blocks were loaned out to lace manufacturers until the business had expanded enough to use the additional space.
John Player died in December 1884 and for the next nine years, the business was run by a small group of family friends until W G and J D Player were ready to take over the firm in 1893. The business became a private limited company in 1895, with a share capital of ?200,000.
The business was run later by Player's sons John Dane Player and William Goodacre Player.
In 1901, in response to competitive threats from the US, Player's merged with the Imperial Tobacco Group. The largest constituent of Imperial Tobacco was W. D. & H. O. Wills and the new group was run from Wills' head office in Bristol. Player's retained its own identity with cigarette brands such as Navy Cut, No. 9, John Player Special, and Gold Leaf
loose tobacco brands such as No Name
and its distinctive logo of a smoking sailor in a navy-cut cap.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPDJB2 - Bulmers cider is one of a number of brands owned by British cider maker H. P. Bulmer of Hereford. It is one of the biggest selling British bottled cider brands in the UK because it has the highest concentration of apples, with a number of variants including Bulmers Original & Pear. It should not be confused with Bulmers Irish Cider, sold outside the Republic of Ireland as Magners.
History
Fred and Percy Bulmer grew the apples at their family orchard at Credenhill in Herefordshire which would be later used to make the cider for which they became known. Production was initially at Ryelands Street in Hereford, the original buildings, including cider cellars survives today as the Cider Museum and King Offa Distillery. Production moved to the current Plough Lane site in the late 1970s. Today HP Bulmer makes 65% of the UK's five hundred million litres of cider sold annually, and the bulk of the UK's cider exports. From 1937 to 1949, Bulmers operated with Wm. Magners of Clonmel, expanding into Irish distribution markets. From 1949 Magners withdrew from this partnership but retained rights to trade under the name HP Bulmer Ltd in Ireland.
In 2003, the Hereford-based firm was bought for ?278 million by Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) with the loss of some 200 jobs initially. In 2008, S&N were bought for ?7.8 billion by the Carlsberg and Heineken groups. Bulmers now only survives as a brand name and subsidiary of the Dutch Heineken group, with operations in Hereford scaled back to focus mainly on the production of cider.
During spring 2006, the company relaunched Bulmers Original in the UK, aimed at the served over ice market, which had grown in popularity over the past few years. Bulmers Original is a 4.5% ABV cider, primarily sold in pint bottles (568 ml). In November 2007, Bulmers pear cider was launched

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M0KWME - Fab is an ice cream brand made by Nestl??. Both the ice lolly on a stick brands 'Zoom' and 'FAB', were introduced in United Kingdom by J. Lyons & Co. Ltd., and were brought out in order to take advantage of the popularity of Gerry Anderson's television series Fireball XL5 and Thunderbirds.
The brand Zoom was launched first, in April/May 1963, to capitalise on Fireball XL5, with Fab appearing in May 1967. Initially the Zoom's commercial target was for boys only, being rocket shaped, which left a vast market niche that was filled by the development of the Fab
a more feminine looking lolly designed in mind for girls. The lolly was originally pitched at the female market with the association to purchase being the attraction of Lady Penelope. Regularly used in the show was the phrase F-A-B as an equivalent to Roger (communications jargon indicating that a message has been received). The original lolly packaging had a prominent image of Lady Penelope and her butler/driver Parker on the wrapper.
The lolly consists of strawberry fruit ice and cream with the top portion dipped in chocolate and coated with sugar confectionery (Sugar strands). In the modern era, their popularity has reduced having been replaced by lollies such as the Twister and various ice snacks based on cartoon characters[citation needed], however Nestl?? still continue production of the iced snack into the 21st century, both as a single item and as part of a multipack.
The description on the packaging reads Real Strawberry and vanilla flavour ice lolly with chocolate flavour coating (5%) and sugar strands (5%).
The fab lolly, Fruit And Berries, has changed from a jelly type centre many years ago, to strawberry ice used now. An orange variety has also been manufactured as has a limited edition lemon flavour, a limited edition apple and blackcurrant flavour (in 2000), and a limited edition tropical flavour in 2003. A new limited edition lolly was created in 2018, to celebrate fifty years of Fab

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K16ATA - The Northern line is a London Underground line that runs from North London to South London. It is printed in black on the Tube map. The Northern line is unique on the Underground network in having two different routes through central London, two southern branches and two northern branches. Despite its name, it does not serve the northernmost stations on the Underground, though it does serve the southernmost station at Morden, the terminus of one of the two southern branches.
The line's northern termini, all in the London Borough of Barnet, are at Edgware and High Barnet
Mill Hill East is the terminus of a single-station branch line off the High Barnet branch. The two main northern branches run south to join at Camden Town where two routes, one via Charing Cross in the West End and the other via Bank in the City, continue to join at Kennington in Southwark. At Kennington, the line again divides into two branches, one to each of the southern termini at Morden, in the borough of Merton, and Battersea Power Station in Wandsworth.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHKXYF - Nature's most accomplished fisherman, the grey heron is known for its motionless stance at the water's edge.
In fact, this graceful pose is most frequently seen replicated by imitation herons, procured to guard the contents of ornamental fishponds. However, heron enthusiasts can spot the real thing waiting patiently for prey on waterways up and down the country.
Grey herons are prevalent throughout Europe, Africa and also in Asia. They typically breed in woodland areas that are close to the water and can be spotted around lakes, estuaries, ponds, rivers and even coastal marshes. Herons are adaptable birds and will feed in any water, be it fresh, salt, clear or muddy, so long as it will yield a catch.
Herons can stand for several minutes with their necks tensed, waiting for an unsuspecting fish to swim into reach. Alternatively, they will stalk the shallows searching for food. Then, quick as a flash, they will dart down and spear the prey with their long dagger-like bill.
The grey heron is the only member of the heron family to be commonly found in Britain. You will be lucky to catch a glimpse of the bittern, which is very scarce, or the egret, which is a rare visitor. Thankfully, the grey heron population is doing well in the UK and is more abundant now than ever before, despite the ever-present danger of starvation over the cold winter months.
Appearance: Large and long-legged with an S-shaped neck. The back and wings are coloured grey, and the neck and under-parts are white. Herons have white heads, black wispy crests and a long, pointed yellow bill
Size: 84-102cm in length, 155-175cm wingspan
Weight: 1,500-2,000g
Lifespan: Maximum 25 years
Diet: Primarily fish and amphibians. However, herons can also feed on small rodents, reptiles and birds
Family: Ardeidae

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHKXYJ - Herons are long-legged, long-necked, freshwater and coastal birds in the family Ardeidae, with 64 recognised species, some of which are referred to as egrets or bitterns rather than herons. Members of the genera Botaurus and Ixobrychus are referred to as bitterns, and, together with the zigzag heron, or zigzag bittern, in the monotypic genus Zebrilus, form a monophyletic group within the Ardeidae. Egrets do not form a biologically distinct group from herons, and tend to be named differently because they are mainly white or have decorative plumes in breeding plumage. Herons, by evolutionary adaptation, have long beaks.
The classification of the individual heron/egret species is fraught with difficulty, and no clear consensus exists about the correct placement of many species into either of the two major genera, Ardea and Egretta. Similarly, the relationships of the genera in the family are not completely resolved. However, one species formerly considered to constitute a separate monotypic family, the Cochlearidae or the boat-billed heron, is now regarded as a member of the Ardeidae.
Although herons resemble birds in some other families, such as the storks, ibises, spoonbills, and cranes, they differ from these in flying with their necks retracted, not outstretched. They are also one of the bird groups that have powder down. Some members of this group nest colonially in trees

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JG2205 - Bumper cars or dodgems are the generic names for a type of flat amusement ride consisting of multiple small electrically powered cars which draw power from the floor and/or ceiling, and which are turned on and off remotely by an operator. Bumper cars were not intended to be bumped, hence the original name Dodgem. They are also known as bumping cars, dodging cars and dashing cars. The first patent for bumper cars was filed in 1921
The cars are commonly powered by one of three methods. The oldest and most common method, the Over Head System (OHS), uses a conductive floor and ceiling with opposing power polarities. Contacts under the vehicle touch the floor while a pole-mounted contact shoe touches the ceiling, forming a complete circuit.
A newer method, the Floor Pick-Up (FPU) system, uses alternating strips of metal across the floor separated by insulating spacers, and no ceiling grid. The strips carry the supply current, and the cars are large enough so that the vehicle covers at least two strips at all times. An array of brushes under each car makes random contact with the strips, and the voltage polarity on each contact is arranged to always provide a correct and complete circuit to operate the vehicle.
A third method is used on Quantum-class cruise ships, where bumper cars run on electric batteries. This avoids the conductive floor/ceiling of the traditional bumper car setup, allowing the SeaPlex venue to be convertible from a bumper-car ride to a multipurpose gym (basketball court). The disadvantage is that these ships' bumper cars take several hours to recharge.
The metal floor is usually set up as a rectangular or oval track, and graphite is sprinkled on the floor to decrease friction. A rubber bumper surrounds each vehicle, and drivers either ram or dodge each other as they travel. The controls are usually an accelerator and a steering wheel. The cars can be made to go backwards by turning the steering wheel far enough in either direction

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAEJ43 - Wellpark Brewery is a brewery in Duke Street in the East End of Glasgow, Scotland.
It was founded in 1740 on the bank of the Molendinar Burn by Hugh and Robert Tennent. It is owned by C&C Group plc, which purchased the Tennent Caledonian Breweries subsidiary in late August 2009 from Belgian brewing company Anheuser-Busch InBev (formerly known as InBev).
The company produces Tennent's Lager, Scotland's market leading brand of pale lager since it was first produced at the Wellpark Brewery in 1885.
Wellpark Brewery was originally known as the Drygate Brewery. It was founded as H & R Tennent in 1740 at Drygate Bridge, near Glasgow Cathedral, by Hugh and Robert Tennent, although brewing had taken place at the same site on the banks of the Molendinar Burn by their ancestor, Robert Tennent, since 1556, making it the oldest continuous commercial concern in Glasgow.
Hugh Tennent's sons, John and Robert, continued the family business, trading as J & R Tennent from 1769. The business expanded in the 1790s when the Tennent family purchased the neighbouring brewery of William McLehose, and renamed the 5-acre (20,000 m2) site Wellpark Brewery.
The firm originally brewed stout and strong export ales. By the mid-19th century J&R Tennent was the world's largest bottled beer exporter. Robert Tennent died in 1826 and John Tennent in 1827. Hugh Tennent (the eldest son of Robert) then assumed control of the business. Hugh Tennent retired in 1855 with his fifth son, Charles Tennent, taking over, but he died in 1864, some months before his father. The brewery was subsequently operated by trustees on behalf of Charles Tennent's sons, Archibald and Hugh.
In 1884 Hugh Tennent took control of the company and first brewed Tennent's lager in 1885. He later built a new lager brewery on the Wellpark site, which was begun in 1889 and completed in 1891. J&R Tennent produced the first draught lager in 1924, the first canned lager in 1935 and the first keg lager in 1963.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RGKEYT - Bayer AG is a German multinational pharmaceutical and life sciences company and one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. Headquartered in Leverkusen, where its illuminated corporate logo, the Bayer cross, is a landmark, Bayer's areas of business include human and veterinary pharmaceuticals
consumer healthcare products
agricultural chemicals and biotechnology products
and high-value polymers. The company is a component of the Euro Stoxx 50 stock market index. Werner Baumann has been CEO since 2016.
Founded in Barmen in 1863 as a dyestuffs factory, Bayer's first and best-known product was aspirin. In 1898 Bayer trademarked the name heroin for the drug diacetylmorphine and marketed it as a cough suppressant and non-addictive substitute for morphine until 1910. Bayer also introduced phenobarbital
prontosil, the first widely used antibiotic and the subject of the 1939 Nobel Prize in Medicine
the antibiotic Cipro (ciprofloxacin)
and Yaz (drospirenone) birth control pills.
In 1925 Bayer was one of six chemical companies that merged to form IG Farben, the world's largest chemical and pharmaceutical company. The Allied Control Council seized IG Farben after World War II, because of its role in the Nazi war effort and involvement in the Holocaust, which included using slave labour from concentration camps. It was split into its six constituent companies in 1951, then split again into three: BASF, Bayer and Hoechst.
Bayer played a key role in the Wirtschaftswunder in post-war West Germany, quickly regaining its position as one of the world's largest chemical and pharmaceutical corporations. In 2006 the company acquired Schering, in 2014 it acquired Merck & Co.'s consumer business, with brands such as Claritin, Coppertone and Dr. Scholl's, and in 2018 it acquired Monsanto, a leading producer of genetically engineered crops, for $63 billion. Bayer CropScience develops genetically modified crops and pesticides.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PE1J53 - Green Shield Stamps was a British sales promotion scheme that rewarded shoppers with stamps that could be used to buy gifts from a catalogue or from any affiliated retailer. The scheme was introduced in 1958 by Richard Tompkins, who had noticed the success of the long-established Sperry & Hutchinson Green Stamps in America.
For a few years, the scheme was so widely adopted that it was referenced in pop songs. But it suffered when Tesco ceased to use it, as part of a price-cutting policy that became standard nationwide. To retain business, Green Shield allowed customers to buy gifts from the catalogue with a mix of stamps and cash, but soon the catalogue became cash-only, and the operation was re-branded as Argos. Stamps were withdrawn altogether in 1991.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy JND0CM - Boddingtons Brewery was a regional brewery in Manchester, England, which owned pubs throughout the North West. Boddingtons was best known for Boddingtons Bitter (Boddies), a straw-golden, hoppy bitter which was one of the first beers to be packaged in cans containing a widget, giving it a creamy draught-style head.
In the 1990s, the beer was promoted as The Cream of Manchester in a popular advertising campaign credited with raising Manchester's profile. Boddingtons became one of the city's most famous products after Manchester United and Coronation Street.
Whitbread bought Boddingtons Brewery in 1989 and Boddingtons Bitter received an increased marketing budget and nationwide distribution. Boddingtons achieved its peak market share in 1997 and at the time was exported to over forty countries.
Boddingtons beer brands are now owned by the global brewer Anheuser?Busch InBev, which acquired the Whitbread Beer Company in 2000. Strangeways Brewery closed in 2004 and production of pasteurised (keg and can) Boddingtons was moved to Samlesbury in Lancashire. Production of the cask-conditioned beer moved to Hydes Brewery in Moss Side, Manchester, until it was discontinued in 2012, ending the beer's association with the city.

Buckfast is very popular in Scotland, the sales of the product were monitored in 2014 by the Scottish government to see if the Buckfast Triangle still stood. The test showed that the towns and cities where Buckfast was sold highest per capita were, in order, Glasgow and the surrounding areas, East Kilbride, Hamilton, Cambuslang, and Coatbridge, all of which are in the northern areas of Lanarkshire, excepting Glasgow.
Several Scottish politicians and social activists have singled out Buckfast Tonic Wine as being particularly responsible for crime, disorder, and general social deprivation in these communities. Although Buckfast accounts for only 0.5% of alcohol sales in Scotland, the figure is markedly higher in Lanarkshire. Helen Liddell, former Secretary of State for Scotland, called for the wine to be banned. In 2005, Scottish Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson suggested that retailers should stop selling the wine. On a subsequent visit to Auchinleck within her constituency, she was greeted by teenagers chanting, Don't ban Buckie. Jamieson then received correspondence from lawyers acting for Buckfast distributors, J. Chandler & Company, in Andover. A further consequence was that Buckfast sales increased substantially in the months following Jamieson's comments

Founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, the club changed its name to Manchester United in 1902 and moved to Old Trafford in 1910.
Manchester United have won 20 league titles, the most of any English club, 11 FA Cups, four League Cups and a record 20 FA Community Shields. The club has also won three European Cups, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, one Intercontinental Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup. In 1998?99, the club became the first in the history of English football to achieve the treble of the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
The 1958 Munich air disaster claimed the lives of eight players. In 1968, under the management of Matt Busby, Manchester United became the first English football club to win the European Cup. Alex Ferguson won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cups and 2 UEFA Champions Leagues, between 1986 and 2013, when he announced his retirement. Louis van Gaal is the club's current manager after Ferguson's successor David Moyes was sacked after only 10 months in charge.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7YN94 - In association football, the United Trinity or the Holy Trinity refers to the Manchester United trio of George Best, Denis Law, and Bobby Charlton, who helped United become the first ever English club team to win the European Cup in 1968.
Charlton was a member of the Busby Babes, a group of talented young players brought through the club's academy by the eponymous manager Matt Busby and his assistant Jimmy Murphy, as well as club scout Joe Armstrong, who discovered Charlton in 1953, and Best in 1961, amongst others. Law arrived at the club from Italian team Torino for a club record ?115,000 in 1962, having previously played for Huddersfield Town and rivals Manchester City.
Charlton made his debut on 6 October 1956, scoring twice in a 4?2 win against Charlton Athletic. Law made his debut on 18 August 1962, scoring in a 2?2 with West Bromwich Albion. Although Best made debut against West Bromwich Albion on 14 September 1963, it wouldn't be until the reverse fixture on 18 January 1964 when all three would feature in the same starting line-up
a 4?1 victory in which all three scored, with Law scoring two of them

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9DN8 - Roadchef was founded in July 1973 by Lindley Catering Investments and Galleon World Travel. The company was originally family owned but in November 1995 was sold to a management team and its most recent change of ownership was to the Israeli Delek Group.
Over the years Roadchef have acquired a portfolio of 20 sites. A large expansion occurred in 1998 when Roadchef agreed to purchase Blue Boar Group and Take A Break for ?80 million and thus proceeded to integrate these acquisitions into an enlarged Roadchef Group. At the time, Blue Boar was the fourth largest operator of motorway services areas in the UK with three operational sites and one development site.
The acquired Watford Gap site was the first motorway service area to be opened in the UK in 1959 and is one of the UK's best known sites. A few years ago (according to Google Finance), Roadchef Motorways was one of the largest Motorway Services Area (MSA) operators in the UK, with 21 sites representing 24% of the market and serving some 60 million visitors each year.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNRF - This night-time photograph shows a large tethered advertising balloon illuminated from within and displayed in Yeovil, Somerset, creating a striking focal point against the dark sky. The balloon prominently features the branding health-on-line along with the slogan Surprisingly Affordable Health Insurance, clearly readable on the envelope.
The balloon is secured by multiple guy ropes and positioned within a fenced grassed area, suggesting a temporary promotional or public event installation rather than a free-flying aircraft. Ground-based floodlights enhance the visual impact, while nearby buildings and street lighting place the scene firmly within an urban town-centre environment.
Such tethered balloons are commonly used for marketing, promotional campaigns, and public engagement events, particularly in high-visibility civic spaces. The image documents contemporary outdoor advertising practices, night-time town-centre activity, and branded visual spectacle in a South West England setting, making it suitable for editorial use relating to marketing, insurance, public events, urban life, and UK regional towns

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM9AWT - Boddingtons Brewery was a regional brewery in Manchester, England, which owned pubs throughout the North West.
Boddingtons beer brands are now owned by the global brewer Anheuser?Busch InBev which acquired the Whitbread Beer Company in 2000. Strangeways Brewery closed in 2004 and production of pasteurised (keg and can) Boddingtons was moved to Samlesbury in Lancashire. Production of the cask conditioned beer moved to Hydes Brewery in Moss Side, Manchester, until it was discontinued in 2012, ending the beer's association with the city.
The Boddingtons two bees logo was introduced in 1900. The bees are a symbol of Manchester, from a time when it was a hive of industry, but the two bees also represent a pun on the company name of Boddingtons Breweries.
Boddingtons largely eschewed above the line advertising until 1987, when it was first advertised on Granada television in the North West of England. The tagline from 1987 until 1991 was If you don't get Boddies, you'll just get bitter. Under Whitbread's custodianship the comedian Frankie Howerd fronted the campaign in a series of six television advertisements which mainly aired in the North West in 1990?1991. Lowe Howard-Spink was the advertising agency responsible for the Howerd advertisements.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AA5PDP - Mostyn Neil Hamilton, AM (born 9 March 1949) is a British politician, non-practising barrister, and former teacher. He has served as a UK Independence Party (UKIP) Member of the National Assembly for Wales for the Mid and West Wales region since 2016
he was previously Conservative MP for the Tatton constituency from 1983 to 1997.
After being implicated (alongside Tim Smith) in the cash-for-questions affair, Hamilton became widely associated with sleaze
he was defeated in the 1997 general election, and subsequently left politics. His wife Christine and he went on to become media celebrities. He left the Conservative Party in 2002, and joined UKIP. He was elected to the National Executive Committee of UKIP in 2011. Following his election to the National Assembly for Wales, he served as UKIP Assembly Group Leader between 2016 and 2018, and has served as Leader of UKIP Wales since 26 September 2016.
In April 2019, Hamilton was the UKIP candidate in the by-election for Newport West. He was third behind the Labour and Conservative candidates with 2,023 votes.
On 20 October 1994, The Guardian published an article which claimed that Hamilton and another minister, Tim Smith, had received money, in the form of cash in brown envelopes. It claimed the money was paid to the men by Mohamed Al-Fayed, the owner of Harrods. In return, the men were to ask questions on behalf of Al-Fayed in the House of Commons. Smith admitted his guilt and resigned immediately. Hamilton claimed innocence but was forced to resign five days later, on 25 October 1994 @HotpixUK

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF23NK - Eastgate, shown here and Eastgate Clock in Chester, Cheshire, England, stand on the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix. The clock is a prominent landmark in the city of Chester and is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
The original gate was guarded by a timber tower which was replaced by a stone tower in the 2nd century, and this in turn was replaced probably in the 14th century. The present gateway dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure which carries the walkway forming part of Chester city walls. In 1899 a clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. It is carried on openwork iron pylons, has a clock face on all four sides, and a copper ogee cupola. The clock was designed by the Chester architect John Douglas. The whole structure, gateway and clock, was listed by English Heritage on 28 July 1955 as a Grade I listed building. You know you have been on a visit to Chester when you have an image of this clock in your memory card. To avoid this failure of imagination, this photograph was taken from under the clock mechanism.
Eastgate was originally defended by a timber tower. The road running through the gate led to Manchester, then across the Pennines to York. By the 18th century the city walls were no longer needed for defensive purposes and so, rather than being pulled down, they were converted into walkways. The medieval gateways were obstructing the traffic into the city and were replaced by wider arched gateways with balustraded parapets. The first gateway to be replaced was Eastgate in 1768 which was rebuilt as an elegant arch. It was built at the expense of Richard Grosvenor, 1st Earl Grosvenor, and designed by Mr Hayden (or Heyden), the earl's surveyor of buildings.
Eastgate today is a clutch of upmarket shops, Browns Jewellers, banks and the Chester Grosvenor Five Star Hotel.

The company was founded as Wills, Watkins & Co. by Henry Overton Wills I and his partner Watkins, who opened a shop in Castle Street, Bristol in 1786. After the retirement of his partner in 1789 it became Wills & Co..
From 1791 to 1793 the company was known as Lilly, Wills & Co when it merged with the firm of Peter Lilly, who owned a snuff mill on the Land Yeo at Barrow Gurney, and then, from 1793 to his retirement in 1803, as Lilly and Wills. In 1826 his two sons, William Day Wills and Henry Overton Wills took over the company and in 1830 the company took the above name.
The company pioneered canteens for the workers, free medical care, sports facilities and paid holidays. Their first brand was Bristol, made at the London factory from 1871 to 1974. Three Castles and Gold Flake followed in 1878 and Woodbine ten years later. Embassy was introduced in 1914 and relaunched in 1962 with coupons.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F80G8P - In association football, the United Trinity or the Holy Trinity refers to the Manchester United trio of George Best, Denis Law, and Bobby Charlton, who helped United become the first ever English club team to win the European Cup in 1968.

On 4 February 1974 a bomb was detonated on a coach ferrying British Army and Royal Air Force personnel from and to the bases at Catterick and Darlington during a period of industrial strike action on the trains. The incident occurred between junctions 26 and 27, shortly after midnight while most of those aboard were sleeping. Twelve people died and more than fifty were injured.
A memorial plaque was installed in memory of those who were killed, situated in the entrance hall of the westbound section of the service area, which was used as a first aid station for those wounded in the blast. A memorial service was held at the service area in February 2004. In 2009 a new memorial was created outside the service area at the wishes of the relatives of those killed
In December 2005 the RSPCA, working with the BBC filmed the sale of an African puff adder at the service area, exploiting a legal loophole to sell on the snake. It was discovered in April 2006 that the service area's toilets were frequently being used for homosexual activity.
Alpine Cleaning Services, who successfully pitched for investment on the television show Dragons' Den, opened one of their first truck-washing facilities at the service area in August 2006.
The service station is one of fourteen for which large murals were commissioned from artist David Fisher in the 1990s, designed to reflect the local area and history

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF79K - Buzzcocks is an English punk rock band formed in Bolton, England in 1976 by singer-songwriter-guitarist Pete Shelley and singer-songwriter Howard Devoto.
Devoto left the band in 1977, after which Pete Shelley became the principal singer-songwriter. After releasing three albums, as well as Singles Going Steady, the band broke up in 1981 following a dispute with their then-record label, but reunited in 1989 and released six more albums before Shelley's death in 2018, but the band has remained active. Steve Diggle, the guitarist and co-founder of the band, is now singer. They added a new guitarist Mani Perazzoli. They are still touring and released their tenth album in 2022

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDH95B - Brexit: What is the Northern Ireland Protocol?
Northern Ireland Protocol - agreed with the European Union (EU) in 2019 - has been a source of tension since it came into force at the start of 2021.
Special trading arrangements were needed for Northern Ireland after the UK voted for Brexit in 2016. This is because it's the only part of the UK with a land border with an EU country - the Republic of Ireland.
Before Brexit, it was easy to transport goods across this border because both sides had the same EU trade rules. No checks or paperwork were necessary.
After Brexit, a new system was needed because the EU has strict food rules and requires border checks when certain goods - such as milk and eggs - arrive from non-EU countries.
UK and the EU agreed that protecting the 1998 Northern Ireland peace deal - the Good Friday Agreement - was an absolute priority. So, both sides signed the Northern Ireland Protocol as part of the Brexit withdrawal agreement, which is now part of international law.
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss says the Protocol has caused problems which had not been expected when the agreement was signed.
The government now wants to ditch parts of the deal.
It wants to create red lanes and green lanes for goods imported from Britain into Northern Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMX1N - A festive winter dusk scene at the Edinburgh Christmas fair in Princes Street Gardens, showing brightly illuminated amusement rides glowing against a deep blue evening sky in the heart of Scotland's capital city. The image features a traditional helter skelter tower and a swing carousel decorated with red, white and warm golden lights, creating a strong visual contrast with the surrounding darkness and bare winter trees. The lights spill across the gardens, reflecting the lively atmosphere of Edinburgh's annual winter festival.
In the background, historic city centre buildings along Princes Street rise above the gardens, anchoring the fair firmly within Edinburgh's urban landscape. The location, close to the former Jenners department store, is one of the city's most recognisable public spaces and becomes a focal point each winter for seasonal events, attracting residents and tourists alike. Blurred figures moving through the scene suggest crowds in motion, reinforcing the sense of energy, cold-weather activity and festive excitement typical of the Christmas period.
Princes Street Gardens sits between Edinburgh's Old Town and New Town and regularly hosts major civic celebrations. During the winter months it is transformed into a temporary amusement park and Christmas attraction, symbolising the city's role as a cultural and tourism destination during the festive season. The combination of fairground rides, historic architecture, winter trees and twilight lighting conveys themes of celebration, seasonal leisure, urban life and tourism in a European capital city.
This image is well suited for editorial use relating to Christmas, winter festivals, city tourism, seasonal events, public celebrations and Scottish urban life, as well as commercial applications requiring atmospheric winter imagery from a major UK city.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD4G - A poignant view of the gravestone of Ian Curtis in Macclesfield Cemetery, Cheshire, England. Ian Curtis was the lead singer and lyricist of the influential Manchester post-punk band Joy Division, whose music helped define a generation and continues to resonate globally decades after his death in 1980 at the age of 23. The grave is adorned with flowers, candles, coins, handwritten notes and personal objects left by fans, reflecting the enduring emotional connection between Curtis and his audience.
The inscription on the stone includes the lyric Love will tear us apart, one of Joy Division's most famous songs, transforming the grave into both a memorial and a cultural symbol. The surrounding cemetery landscape, with weathered headstones, grass and trees under an overcast sky, reinforces the quiet, reflective atmosphere. The open book and scattered offerings suggest repeated visits over time, marking the site as a place of pilgrimage for music fans from around the world.
Ian Curtis's work addressed themes of alienation, mental health, despair and emotional intensity, subjects that remain deeply relevant. His death has become part of a wider conversation about depression, epilepsy and the pressures faced by young artists. Macclesfield Cemetery therefore occupies a unique position in British cultural geography, where personal loss, artistic legacy and collective memory intersect.
This image is well suited for editorial use covering music history, post-punk culture, British cultural heritage, mental health awareness, fandom and memorial practices, as well as commercial editorial projects examining the lasting impact of musicians whose influence far outlived their short lives.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0N8R - A local authority surveyor carries out roadside measurement work on a bypass road in the United Kingdom, using a Leica total station survey instrument mounted on a tripod. The surveyor is dressed in high-visibility protective clothing and gloves, reflecting standard safety requirements for working close to live traffic. A large vehicle passes in the background, captured with motion blur, emphasising both the speed of the traffic and the risk-managed nature of the work.
The image highlights the practical, front-line role of surveyors in maintaining and improving transport infrastructure. Such work underpins road design, maintenance, safety improvements and asset management carried out by local authorities and public bodies. The presence of the Leica surveying equipment points to modern digital measurement techniques used to collect accurate positional data for highways, junctions and roadside assets.
The roadside setting, blurred lorry and focused posture of the surveyor convey concentration, professionalism and situational awareness. This visual contrast between static precision equipment and fast-moving traffic reinforces themes of risk control, engineering discipline and public safety. The scene reflects the everyday reality of civil engineering and surveying work that often takes place unnoticed alongside busy roads.
This image is well suited for editorial use covering local government, transport infrastructure, road safety, public services, engineering and surveying professions, as well as commercial applications relating to construction, infrastructure planning, professional services, workplace safety and UK transport systems.
