Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJTW - This photograph shows barges and narrowboats moored at New Islington Marina, located on the Ashton Canal close to Ancoats and the eastern edge of Manchester city centre. The canal, originally constructed in the late eighteenth century, formed part of the extensive inland waterway network that supported Manchester's rise as an industrial city, transporting raw materials and finished goods between mills, warehouses, and regional ports.
In the foreground, painted narrowboats sit quietly on the water, while modern apartment blocks and redeveloped former industrial buildings line the canal banks behind. The contrast highlights Manchester's transition from heavy industry to residential, commercial, and leisure uses, with historic waterways now forming a central feature of urban regeneration rather than industrial logistics.
New Islington and neighbouring Ancoats have undergone significant redevelopment over the past two decades, transforming former industrial land into mixed use neighbourhoods. The marina has become a focal point for waterside living, attracting residents, walkers, and visitors, while retaining the working character of the canal through active moorings.
Taken in daylight under broken cloud, the image captures a calm urban scene that illustrates how Manchester's industrial heritage continues to shape the modern city. The presence of historic canals alongside contemporary housing reflects a broader trend in UK cities, where former industrial infrastructure is repurposed to support sustainable urban living and place making.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAWW8 - The Jeanie Johnston, a full-scale replica of a nineteenth-century Irish emigrant ship, lies moored on the north bank of the River Liffey in Dublin, viewed here from the south bank. The scene is photographed in daylight under a blue sky with scattered cloud, suggesting mild spring or early summer conditions typical of fair weather in Ireland.
The ship's tall masts, rigging and traditional wooden hull stand in contrast to the modern glass and brick architecture of Dublin Docklands, reflecting the city's blend of historic memory and contemporary regeneration. Calm river conditions and soft natural light enhance the clarity of the waterfront setting.
The Jeanie Johnston serves as a floating museum and powerful symbol of Irish emigration during the Great Famine, when thousands left Ireland for North America. Today it remains a prominent riverside landmark, frequently used in editorial contexts relating to Irish history, migration, maritime heritage, tourism and Dublin's evolving urban landscape.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RE0X9N - Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia, also known as the Royal Yacht Britannia, is the former royal yacht of the British monarchy. She was in service from 1954 until 1997. She was the 83rd such vessel since King Charles II acceded to the throne in 1660, and is the second royal yacht to bear the name, the first being the racing cutter built for the Prince of Wales in 1893. During her 43-year career, the yacht travelled more than a million nautical miles around the world to more than 600 ports in 135 countries. Now retired from royal service, Britannia is permanently berthed at Ocean Terminal, Leith in Edinburgh, Scotland, where it is a visitor attraction with over 300,000 visits each year.
Construction
HMY Britannia was built at the shipyard of John Brown & Co. Ltd in Clydebank, Dunbartonshire. She was launched by Queen Elizabeth II on 16 April 1953, and commissioned on 11 January 1954. The ship was designed with three masts: a 133-foot (41 m) foremast, a 139-foot (42 m) mainmast, and a 118-foot (36 m) mizzenmast. The top aerial on the foremast and the top 20 feet (6.1 m) of the mainmast were hinged to allow the ship to pass under bridges.
Britannia was designed to be converted into a hospital ship in time of war, although this capability was never used. In the event of nuclear war, it was intended for the Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, to take refuge aboard Britannia off the north-west coast of Scotland

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGJ7P - A view of Newhaven Harbour in Edinburgh at low tide, showing fishing boats resting on the harbour bed with the lighthouse marking the entrance to the port. The scene looks out across the Firth of Forth towards the coast of Fife, highlighting Newhaven's position as a historic working harbour on Scotland's east coast.
Newhaven developed as a fishing and harbour settlement closely linked to Edinburgh's food supply, and despite changes in the local economy, small-scale fishing activity continues to operate from the port. Low tide exposes the working nature of the harbour, revealing boats, mooring lines, creels and harbour infrastructure that are usually hidden when the water is in.
Photographed in daylight under overcast skies, the image documents everyday maritime life rather than a tourist spectacle. It illustrates themes of coastal heritage, fishing traditions, tidal environments and the continued presence of working harbours within modern urban settings.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP339 - The exterior of Moores department store in Coleraine town centre, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The prominent corner building features the name Moores displayed high on the facade, marking one of the town's best-known independent retailers, established in Coleraine in 1925.
The store occupies a large, traditional town centre premises with period architectural detailing, wide display windows, and a curved corner frontage that makes it a recognisable local landmark. Pedestrians pass along the shopping street, with hanging flower baskets and street lighting contributing to the everyday commercial atmosphere of the town centre.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image documents the continuing presence of long-established independent retail in Northern Ireland towns, at a time when many traditional department stores have disappeared from the high street. It provides a visual record of Coleraine's retail heritage and the role such businesses play in sustaining town centre identity, employment, and local economic life. Moores was established during the inter-war period, a time when Coleraine was a growing commercial hub for the north-west of Ulster. Like many provincial department stores of the era, Moores developed as a locally owned, family-run business, serving both the town and its rural hinterland.
Its business model followed the classic early 20th-century department store format:
clothing and footwear
household goods
fabrics and haberdashery
This positioned Moores as a practical, aspirational retailer for everyday life rather than a luxury outlet.
Post-war expansion and consolidation (1950s?1970s)
After the Second World War, Moores expanded alongside changing consumer expectations. During this period:
department stores became central to town-centre life
shopping shifted from necessity to experience
window displays, seasonal ranges, and fashion departments grew in importance

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDTB - HMS Belfast is a Town-class light cruiser that was built for the Royal Navy. She is now permanently moored as a museum ship on the River Thames in London and is operated by the Imperial War Museum.
Construction of Belfast, the first ship in the Royal Navy to be named after the capital city of Northern Ireland and one of ten Town-class cruisers, began in December 1936. She was launched on St Patrick's Day 1938. Commissioned in early August 1939 shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, Belfast was initially part of the British naval blockade against Germany. In November 1939, Belfast struck a German mine and, in spite of fears that she would be scrapped, spent more than two years undergoing extensive repairs. Belfast returned to action in November 1942 with improved firepower, radar equipment, and armour. Belfast saw action escorting Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union during 1943 and in December 1943 played an important role in the Battle of North Cape, assisting in the destruction of the German warship Scharnhorst. In June 1944, Belfast took part in Operation Overlord supporting the Normandy landings. In June 1945, she was redeployed to the Far East to join the British Pacific Fleet, arriving shortly before the end of the Second World War. Belfast saw further combat action in 1950?52 during the Korean War and underwent an extensive modernisation between 1956 and 1959. A number of further overseas commissions followed before she entered reserve in 1963.
In 1967, efforts were initiated to avert Belfast's expected scrapping and to preserve her as a museum ship. A joint committee of the Imperial War Museum, the National Maritime Museum, and the Ministry of Defence was established and then reported in June 1968 that preservation was practical. In 1971, however, the government decided against preservation, prompting the formation of the private HMS Belfast Trust to campaign for her preservation. The efforts of the Trust were successful

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59WP0 - This photograph shows the LPG tanker Gale (IMO 9876335), a specialist liquefied petroleum gas carrier registered in Rotterdam, moored at Latchford Locks on the River Mersey in Warrington, Cheshire. The image was taken during the blue hour at dusk, with the deep blue evening sky contrasting against the bright white superstructure and illuminated working decks of the vessel.
The ship's design reflects its role in the transport of pressurised gas cargoes, with clearly visible deck equipment, piping, safety railings, and enclosed working areas. Prominent navigation and deck lights highlight the operational nature of the vessel and ensure visibility during night-time manoeuvres through inland waterways and lock systems.
Latchford Locks form an important part of the River Mersey navigation route, enabling commercial vessels to pass between tidal and non-tidal sections of the river. Scenes such as this illustrate the continued industrial and logistical use of Britain's inland waterways, even in urban settings like Warrington, where residential areas and historic riverside infrastructure sit alongside working maritime operations.
The calm water, artificial lighting, and absence of visible crew activity suggest a pause in transit rather than active loading or unloading. Images of LPG tankers in inland ports are commonly used to illustrate themes of energy supply, industrial transport, maritime engineering, shipping logistics, and the relationship between industry and urban waterways in the United Kingdom.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCDXE2 - This image shows Whitby Harbour in North Yorkshire during the summer months, with fishing boats, leisure craft, and historic-style sailing vessels moored along the quayside. The harbour is surrounded by tightly packed red-roofed houses and historic waterfront buildings that rise up the hillside, giving Whitby its distinctive coastal townscape.
The scene reflects Whitby's dual role as both a working harbour and a major tourist destination on the Yorkshire coast. Fishing vessels, charter boats, and visitor attractions share the waterfront, while people move along the quayside enjoying the harbour views during the holiday season.
Taken in daylight under lightly overcast summer skies, the image captures the busy but relaxed atmosphere typical of Whitby in peak season. The harbour has long been central to the town's economy and identity, historically supporting fishing, shipbuilding, and maritime trade, and today playing a key role in tourism.
The photograph illustrates the enduring appeal of Whitby Harbour as a focal point of coastal heritage, maritime activity, and summer tourism in northern England.

The vessel displays promotional signage for recreational sea-fishing trips, including references to large cod catches, a popular draw for angling visitors to the area.
Behind the boat, a wide view of Whitby Harbour reveals additional fishing and leisure vessels, quayside infrastructure, and the town's distinctive red-roofed buildings rising up the hillside. Whitby has a long maritime history and remains a working harbour while also serving as a major tourism destination on the Yorkshire coast.
The photograph was taken in daylight under lightly overcast conditions, creating soft, even light across the harbour scene. Mooring chains, railings, and deck equipment in the foreground reinforce the working character of the port.
Charter fishing boats like Chieftain Charters form an important part of Whitby's visitor economy, linking traditional maritime activity with modern leisure tourism. The image captures the blend of heritage, recreation, and everyday harbour life that defines Whitby as a coastal town.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD246R - Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. The town is on the Yorkshire Coast at the mouth of the River Esk. It has a maritime, mineral and tourist economy. The fishing port emerged during the Middle Ages, supporting important herring and whaling fleets, and was where Captain Cook learned seamanship and, coincidentally, where his first vessel to explore the southern ocean, HMS Endeavour was built. Jet and alum were mined locally, and Whitby jet, which was mined by the Romans and Victorians, became fashionable during the 19th century.
The earliest record of a permanent settlement is in 656 AD, when as Strean??shealh it was the place where Oswy, the Christian king of Northumbria, founded the first abbey, under the abbess Hilda. The Synod of Whitby was held there in 664 AD. In 867 AD, Viking raiders destroyed the monastery. The town's East Cliff is home to the ruins of Whitby Abbey, where C??dmon, the earliest recognised English poet, lived. Another monastery was founded in 1078 AD. It was in this period that the town gained its current name, Whitby (from white settlement in Old Norse). In the following centuries Whitby functioned as a fishing settlement until, in the 18th century, it developed as a port and centre for shipbuilding and whaling, the trade in locally mined alum, and the manufacture of Whitby jet jewellery. Tourism started in Whitby during the Georgian period and developed with the arrival of the railway in 1839.
Its attraction as a tourist destination is enhanced by the proximity of the high ground of the North York Moors national park and the heritage coastline and by association with the horror novel Dracula. The abbey ruin at the top of the East Cliff is the town's oldest and most prominent landmark. Other significant features include the swing bridge, which crosses the River Esk and the harbour, which is sheltered by the grade II listed East and West piers. The town's maritime heritage is commemorated by statues of

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JWB549 - Moore is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Halton, Cheshire, England, located midway between Runcorn and Warrington. It has a population of 807.
Etymology
The name 'Moore' comes from the Old English word mor, meaning 'moor, or fen'. The village's earliest recording was as Mora, some time in the 12th century.
History
Moore is the site of a disused railway station named Daresbury. The railway station was opened in 1850 and was located on the south side of Runcorn Road. The station was closed to passengers in 1952 and closed completely in 1965. The platforms and ramps down from road are still visible from Runcorn Road. The railway station was situated on the Birkenhead Joint Railway close to Warrington and in the village of Moore. The railway station was the second to open in the village. The first railway station which was very close by was part of the Grand Junction Railway which opened on 4 July 1837. Moore was a second class station at which a First Class train would not stop. The engineer for the northern half of the new railway was Joseph Locke who became a famous as a railway engineer. The date of closure of Moore railway station is uncertain. Daresbury railway station was initially called Moore but the name was changed to Daresbury in April 1861 taking its name from a village a mile or so away.
The area of Moore to the north of the West Coast Main Line and west of Moss Lane was designated as part of Runcorn New Town in 1964 and the land allocated to industry. The New Town Masterplan was amended in 1975 to reduce the amount of industrial land around the village and to create a green buffer between it and what would become Manor Park Industrial Estate

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JWB54K - Teletubbies is a British children's television series created by Anne Wood and Andrew Davenport for the BBC. The programme focuses on four differently coloured characters known as the Teletubbies, named after the television screens on their bellies. Recognised throughout popular culture for the uniquely shaped antenna protruding from the head of each character, the Teletubbies communicate through gibberish and were designed to bear resemblance to toddlers
Tinky Winky (played by Dave Thompson and Simon Shelton in the original series and by Jeremiah Krage in the revival series) is the first Teletubby, as well as the largest and oldest of the group. He is covered in purple terrycloth and has a triangular antenna on his head. He often carries a red bag.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JP5T1K - Does Birmingham really have more miles of canal than Venice? The exact numbers depend on where you draw the city boundaries, but the whole Birmingham Canal Navigations (BCN) system adds up to 100 miles of canals.
It's one of the most intricate canal networks in the world. The hub of the BCN is the bustling city centre junction at Gas Street Basin. Here, colourful boats and historic canal architecture sit side-by-side with vibrant modern restaurants, cafes and bars. The basin is in the heart of Birmingham's cosmopolitan nightlife and shopping districts. The mainlines and city centre canals are busy with boaters, walkers and cyclists.
However, elsewhere on the BCN, you can really get away from it all on winding suburban canals and some surprisingly rural branches. In the northern waters of the BCN, there are some rarely-explored waterways that are truly off the beaten track.
The canals were the life-blood of Victorian Birmingham and the Black Country. At their height, they were so busy that gas lighting was installed beside the locks to permit round-the-clock operation. Boats were built without cabins for maximum carrying capacity, and a near-tidal effect was produced as swarms of narrowboats converged on the Black Country collieries at the same time every day

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DCE9P7 - Lymm is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Warrington, Cheshire, England, which incorporates the hamlets of Booths Hill, Broomedge, Church Green, Deansgreen, Heatley, Heatley Heath, Little Heatley, Oughtrington, Reddish, Rushgreen and Statham. At the 2021 United Kingdom census it had a population of 12,700.
History
The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre. The village appears as Limme in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Lymm was an agricultural village until the Industrial Revolution, which brought the Bridgewater Canal and the Warrington and Altrincham Junction Railway to the village. The village played a prominent role within the salt extraction industry, gold beating industry and cotton industry (many of its inhabitants were fustian cutters).
Lymm Heritage Centre, which opened in June 2017, is in the centre of the village on Legh Street. It hosts exhibitions related to local history as well as activities for schools and visitors.
Morris dancing was taking place in Lymm as early as 1817, often appearing in the village at Rushbearing time throughout the Victorian era. Morris dancing[7] continues to feature within the village with Lymm Morris dancers frequently performing during Rushbearing and at the various annual village festivals including the Lymm May Queen Festival, Lymm Festival and Lymm Dickensian Festival.
In 2017, Lymm was voted as one of the 'Best Places to Live' according to The Times and The Sunday Times list. In 2023, the village was voted as one of Britains 'Most Desirable Towns' according to The Daily Telegraph

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK5MG - Grappenhall is mentioned in the Domesday Book with the name Gropenhale and with a valuation of five shillings.
St Wilfrid's Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower. This is believed to be Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The church itself was first constructed in 1120, though was rebuilt 400 years later. The church was also, at a time, in the possession of the Boidelle (Boydell) family.
Along with the church, the centre of the village contains two pubs, the Parr Arms and the Ram's Head, and Grappenhall Hall Residential School (no longer a residential school) and St Wilfrid's Primary School. Bradshaw Community Primary School is located north of the village centre. The Bridgewater canal, unique as being the first with no locks required, flows through the village
Grappenhall is home to the 25th Warrington East (St Wilfred's) Scout Troop. There is also a cricket ground, which is the home of Grappenhall Cricket Club.Australian cricketer Steve Smith was signed for the club for five weeks in 2007, when he was 17

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H4EDNT - Emmeline Pankhurst is moored on the non-towing path side of the main line of the Bridgewater Canal just out of Castlefield Basin (the junction of the Rochdale and Bridgewater Canals). The wharf can be reached by car by turning off Liverpool Road at Potato Wharf (the narrow slightly inconspicuous street just below and opposite the Museum of Science & Industry, behind the Castlefield Hotel).
Alternatively it is an easy walk from Deansgate train station or Deansgate-Castlefield tram stop which are adjacent to each other (bottom-right of map). You need to walk via Liverpool Street and Potato Wharf (street) because access to the boat directly from Castlefield Basin is not possible.
To reach the boat go on foot to the junction with Potato Wharf (~30yds from the side street above) and walk to the end of the paved pedestrian area which faces the junction, keeping towards the right. Cross the bridge over the canal arm, head diagonally right to go through a gate to the canal and turn left along the bank to find the trip boat.
Emmeline Pankhurst is owned by City Centre Cruises in Manchester who are offering a 10% discount to IWA Members for their Sunday lunch cruise.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ECW4GA - Billy Whizz is a fictional character featured in the British comic The Beano, first appearing in issue 1139, dated 16 May 1964, when it replaced The Country Cuzzins. Billy, the title character, is a boy who can run extraordinarily fast. His speed often causes chaos yet at the same time his ability can prove useful. He also has a younger brother called Alfie Whizz of similar appearance. Alfie is usually shown as a normal boy but occasionally he is shown to be just as fast as his brother.
In strips up until the 1980s, Billy lives in Whizztown rather than Beanotown like most of the other regular characters, however this later changed and more recent strips place him in Beanotown.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K5J0D2 - St Ives is on the western shore of St Ives Bay, its harbour sheltered by St Ives Island (a headland) and Smeaton's pier. Close to the harbour, in the old part of the town, the streets are narrow and uneven while its wider streets are in the newer parts of the town on rising ground. The town has four beaches: Porthmeor a surfing beach, Porthgwidden a small sandy cove, Harbour by the working port and Porthminster which has almost half a mile of sand
St Ives (Cornish: Porth Ia, meaning St Ia's cove) is a seaside town, civil parish and port in Cornwall, England. The town lies north of Penzance and west of Camborne on the coast of the Celtic Sea. In former times it was commercially dependent on fishing. The decline in fishing, however, caused a shift in commercial emphasis, and the town is now primarily a popular seaside resort, notably achieving the title of Best UK Seaside Town from the British Travel Awards in both 2010 and 2011. St Ives was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1639. St Ives has become renowned for its number of artists. It was named best seaside town of 2007 by The Guardian newspaper
From medieval times fishing was important at St Ives
it was one of the most important fishing ports on the north Cornish coast. The original pier's construction date is unknown but the first reference to St Ives having a pier was in 1478 in William Worcester's 'Itinerary'.[28] The pier was re-built by John Smeaton between 1766 and 1770 after falling into disrepair. It was lengthened at a later date. The octagonal lookout with a cupola belongs to Smeaton's design.
A. K. Hamilton Jenkin describes how the St Ives fisherman strictly observed Sunday as a day of rest. St Ives was a very busy fishing port and seining was the usual method of fishing. Seining was carried out by a set of three boats of different sizes, the largest two carrying seine nets of different sizes. The total number of crew was seventeen or eighteen. However this came to an end in 1924.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DD4HA1 - HMS Belfast is a Town-class light cruiser that was built for the Royal Navy.
In November 1939, Belfast struck a German mine and spent more than two years undergoing extensive repairs. In June 1945, Belfast was redeployed to the Far East to join the British Pacific Fleet, arriving shortly before the end of the Second World War. Belfast saw further combat action in 1950?52 during the Korean War and underwent an extensive modernisation between 1956 and 1959. A number of further overseas commissions followed before Belfast entered reserve in 1963.
In 1967, efforts were initiated to avert Belfast's expected scrapping and to preserve her as a museum ship. A joint committee of the Imperial War Museum, the National Maritime Museum, and the Ministry of Defence were established and then reported in June 1968 that preservation was practical. In 1971, the government decided against preservation, prompting the formation of the private HMS Belfast Trust to campaign for her preservation. The efforts of the Trust were successful, and the government transferred the ship to the Trust in July 1971.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HE7M2Y - Nestled along a narrow cobbled alleyway in the historic Half Bap area, the Duke offers a traditional Belfast welcome of craic, music and humour in contrast to the modern fashionable establishments currently blowing into the surrounding streets. Hosting regular traditional sessions there is no better place to sample the real taste of our city ? simply step in and drink an Irish whiskey washed down with a pint of creamy stout.
Imagine Belfast with only five streets. Protected by earth ramparts and the city walls, the area where the Dark Horse now stands was convenient to the old iron foundry, the pottery, the whiskey merchants and the brown linen hall. Appreciate the superb d??cor and special atmosphere with beautiful antique mirrors, Belfast furniture and artefacts from some of the city's most famous hotels and buildings from bygone times ? providing a rather rare and unique glimpse of Belfast's historical past. Just call in and you will enjoy a huge warm welcome from a truly Belfast institution with a huge heart.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0N73 - A wide panoramic view of Stornoway Harbour on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, showing a vivid rainbow arcing through heavy Atlantic cloud as sunlight breaks across the town and waterfront. The calm surface of the harbour reflects moored fishing boats, harbour structures and colourful shoreline buildings, creating a layered composition that contrasts tranquillity with the unsettled weather above. Dark storm clouds dominate the sky, while the rainbow introduces a moment of brightness and visual optimism typical of rapidly changing conditions in the Western Isles.
Stornoway is the largest town in the Outer Hebrides and functions as the main port, commercial centre and transport hub for Lewis and Harris. The harbour plays a central role in the local economy, supporting fishing, ferry services and maritime trade, and remains a focal point of daily island life. The presence of working boats alongside residential and commercial buildings highlights the close relationship between community and sea that defines the Hebridean experience.
Rainbows are a frequent but fleeting feature of the Hebridean climate, produced by fast-moving weather systems rolling in from the Atlantic Ocean. This image captures that distinctive combination of dramatic skies, calm water and sudden light that characterises coastal Scotland. The scene evokes themes of resilience, isolation, natural beauty and continuity in remote island communities.
This image is well suited for editorial use covering Scottish islands, coastal weather, maritime life, climate and environment, travel and tourism in the Outer Hebrides, as well as commercial applications requiring atmospheric coastal imagery with strong natural symbolism.
