Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GY002A - St Wilfrid's Church is in Church Lane, Grappenhall, a village in Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is designated by Historic England as a Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Great Budworth
The church is Norman in origin, built probably in the earlier part of the 12th century and completed about 1120. This was a small and simple church, consisting of a nave, chancel and, possibly, an apse.[3] The foundations of this church were discovered during the 1873“74 restoration.[4]
A chantry chapel was added by the Boydell family in 1334 in a position where the south aisle now stands. From 1529 the church was largely rebuilt in local sandstone. The old church was demolished and a new nave, chancel, north aisle and a west tower were built. In 1539 the south aisle was added, which incorporated the Boydell chapel.
The south porch was added in 1641 and at this time the west wall was strengthened. In 1833 the roof of the nave was raised to form a clerestory and in the 1850s the south aisle was further extended, and a vestry was built. There was a more substantial restoration in 1873“74 by the Lancaster architects Paley and Austin, which included the provision of new floors and roofs, at a cost of about £4,000

Are you looking for love and romance? August, always a mad busy crazy time in Edinburgh, during the festival and fringe, which seems to have grown even bigger than the tattoo and festival. There's no shortage of scaryness and satire here!.
Call Me is a play starring Sarah Adams, Christine Clare, Laura Cope, Claire Dean, Katie McArdle and Matthew Stead which was performed at Sweet Grassmarket @ 10:10pm for 70 minutes, on most days during August 2012.
As the blurb says:
By The Slice Theatre Company Presents Call Me! Sponsored by www.TheatreLoverDating.co.uk
Writing and producing together for the first time, sisters Sarah Adams and Becky Adams are heading to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year with their play, dating comedy Call Me!, which received rave reviews and a sell-out run in Manchester last year.
Inspired by the likes of Victoria Wood and Dawn French, writer Sarah Adams has formed new theatre company By The Slice to produce a cringe-worthy yet affectionate romantic comedy alongside her film producer sister Becky. By The Slice invites the audience to come and rejoice with them at the ridiculousness of love and dating! What better way to get over your latest dating disaster than to be able to laugh at someone else's ludicrous misfortunes? Yet on this rollercoaster of humiliation and hilarity, we also unexpectedly find a new humility for love.
Taking all of the available Manchester cast with them, By The Slice will also be introducing some new faces as well as new-to-theatre director Dan Wilson whose credits include directing Sir Ian McKellen and Status Quo in Coronation Street, EastEnders, BBC's Land Girls and 32 Brinkburn Street, and feature film The Roundabout.
Sarah is joined in By The Slice by her sister, Producer Becky Adams. 'Of course initially I was introduced to Call Me! because it's my sister that has written it, but it was clear immediately how funny, engaging and close-to-the-bone the script was, and how well it connected with audiences, and so I quickly got my company Reelscape Productions involved!' says Becky.
Call Me! follows three women on an exposing comedy journey through their all too familiar relationship mishaps. Fed up with their bizarre relationships, our three lead characters decide to visit hippie love therapist Sandy Morris - founder of the Love Yourself To A Love Life Worth Loving movement. This proves an adventure in itself. Meanwhile, the antithesis of the conventional relationship plays out between confident Jenny and clumsy Mike. Will they become the success story of the unexpected? Will any of our characters succeed in banishing the rough from the smooth? Not if Sandy has anything to do with it!
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the world's largest arts festival, with the 2012 event spanning 25 days totalling over 2,695 shows from 47 countries in 279 venues. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place annually in Scotland's capital, in the month of August. The Fringe is a showcase for the performing arts, particularly theatre and comedy (which has seen substantial growth in recent years), although dance and music are also represented. In 2012, 36% of shows were comedy and 28% theatrical productions. Theatrical productions range from the classics of ancient Greece to William Shakespeare, Samuel Beckett and contemporary works. In 2012, 1,418 shows were having their world premiere.
The Fringe is an unjuried festival – with no selection committee, and therefore any type of performance may participate. The Fringe has often showcased experimental works that might not be invited to a more conservative arts festival. In addition to ticketed, programmed events, the Festival has included a street fair, located primarily on the Royal Mile. The Festival is organized by the Festival Fringe Society, which publishes the programme, sells tickets, and offers advice to performers. Their offices are on the Royal Mile.

A show which ran at The Space on The Mile, Venue 39 (80 The High St), August 3rd to the 17th by The Terrible Edgar Theatre Co.
Andrew Leask reviewed it like this: It’s been hours since I left the venue, and I’m still thinking about this play. It takes a complex, metatextual concept – characters in a play have become self-aware – and plays with it, delivering an adaptation of ‘Oedipus’ that is as thought-provoking as it is engaging.
The chorus want to hide the horrible truth from Oedipus, but are compelled to follow the script
at times comical, it builds to a dark, fittingly tragic climax, throwing the audience’s need for tragedy and catharsis back at them. If you’re interested in tragedy, this will leave you with a mental itch that you can’t quite scratch: the mark of exciting, provocative theatre.
Oedipus fulfilled a prophecy that said he would kill his father and marry his mother, and thereby brought disaster on his city and family. The story of Oedipus is the subject of Sophocles's tragedy Oedipus the King, which was followed by Oedipus at Colonus and then Antigone. Together, these plays make up Sophocles's three Theban plays. Oedipus represents two enduring themes of Greek myth and drama: the flawed nature of humanity and an individual's powerlessness against the course of destiny in a harsh universe.

This is a shot of Caroline, a great lady who I was introduced to when taking some fashion shots last November. A fantastic bundle of fun who probably once you know her better, you could trust your life to.
Here she sports a lovely LBD (Little black dress) and the type of difficult to light hat that photographers hate.
An LBD. A Little Black Number. They say no lady's wardrobe is complete without one. Wearing black might not make those extra pounds disappear, but you can trick the eye into believing they have. Caroline doesn't need slimming effects and is a healthy 8-10.
As a general rule though, dressing from head to toe in a single color will instantly make you look slimmer. This is because wearing one color gives you a straight vertical line to look at and doesn’t emphasize any particular areas. When you wear more than one color, the eye is instantly attracted to where the break occurs, which is usually around the waist.
Black increases that slimming illusion because it does not reflect light. Other colors are affected by light, projecting reflections or casting shadows in areas where your body curves or the material bends and wrinkles. Black, on the other hand, doesn’t have this effect, so any imperfections remain hidden under the clothes. In short, black is a very effective color for hiding bulges, lumps and bumps. White highlights all shadows, making bulges and lumps prominent and causing the exact opposite effect of wearing black.
Beware, the slimming effect of black is somewhat diminished if you wear shiny materials like Lycra, satin or sequins. The shine on the clothes will produce reflections and sometimes shadows, depending on the type of cloth. It’s also important to remember that the slimming illusion of black only works from the back or front. If you stand sideways, the shape of your body becomes evident again

A band that I am convinced never had the recognician they deserved.
The group consisted of Peter Murphy (vocals), Daniel Ash (guitar), Kevin Haskins (drums) and David J (bass). The band was originally Bauhaus 1919 before they dropped the numerical portion within a year of formation. With their dark and gloomy sound and image, Bauhaus are generally considered the first gothic rock group.
Bauhaus first broke up in 1983. Peter Murphy began a solo career while the other members continued as Tones on Tail and, later, Love and Rockets. Both enjoyed greater commercial success in the United States than Bauhaus had, but disappeared from the charts in their homeland. The band reunited for a 1998 tour and on a more permanent basis in 2005. The group announced plans to disband again following the release of their final album, Go Away White, in 2008.
The band started on the 4AD label and moved quickly to Beggars Banquet, who was their parent. 'Kick in the Eye' was the debut release on the label.
Bauhaus combined a number of influences including punk music, glam rock, and Krautrock—even funk and dub—to create a gloomy and introspective sound which appealed to many fans left disillusioned by the New Wave that arose in the wake of punk's collapse.
Their sound proved influential, inspiring or bringing attention to a whole wave of post-punk groups delving into the intense, gloomy style that would eventually come to be known as gothic rock. Its crucial elements included Peter Murphy's deep and sonorous voice, Daniel Ash's innovative guitar playing and David J's dub-influenced bass.

The library is a great place to find romance (people tell me). A place to escape into a Mills &
Boon or a Jennifer Baker who does quite a few teen romances.
'Holly and Chris have fallen desperately in love. So much so that when their feuding families try to put a stop to their romance, they stake everything on their overwhelming feelings. They decide to run away and make a new life together'....
Nice to try from the library, maybe not something that you might buy from Amazon...
Just dont be caught leaving the library with one....

I found this a very interesting book and this lady very interesting as she told me she worked in the local Job Centre.
In David Cameroons 'Big Society' we will need to get our heads around the 'Non-Cash Reward'. There certainly will be limited or zero funds to support services that used to cost money.
The policy certainly has its critics. Labour leader Ed Miliband in February 2011 said Mr Cameron was undermining his own Big Society concept through spending cuts.
Various charity figures have suggested that the scale of local authority cuts could kill off the idea before it gets going - by 'destroying' existing voluntary groups.
The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu warned at one of his Sunday sermons, that investment in public services was needed if the Big Society was to succeed.
Norman Smith, BBC Radio4 had this comment:
The difficulty, it seems, he faces in getting his Big Society message over is that voters have rather more pressing matters on their mind.
After all, at a time of job losses, pay freezes, pension hikes and public service cuts - people may take the view that creating the Big Society is not very high on their list of priorities.
Somehow Mr Cameron has to convince voters it matters as much to them as it clearly does to him.
Merseyside television producer Phil Redmond has already attacked the 'big society' idea, saying it has been 'undermined by public spending cuts'.
The Brookside and Hollyoaks creator had originally been a fan of the concept, taking charge of a project involving volunteering and cultural activities in Liverpool.
He said: 'I do remain a strong supporter of the principle behind big society, because it wasn't too long ago that the media was full of stories about Big Brother, too much red tape, surveillance society, we need to get engaged with society and so on.
'It just came at the wrong moment.'
He said there was a need to make sure there was a separation between the big society plans and the cuts.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BNKK50 - East Lancashire Railway is a 12.5-mile (20 km) heritage railway line in North West England which runs between Heywood, Greater Manchester and Rawtenstall in Lancashire. There are intermediate stations at Bury Bolton Street, Burrs Country Park, Summerseat and Ramsbottom, with the line crossing the border into Rossendale serving Irwell Vale and Rawtenstall. Before closure, the line terminated at Bacup.
The heritage line is now just over 12 miles (19 km) long and has a mainline connection with the national railway network at Castleton, just beyond Heywood. The ELR is planning to extend the running line to Castleton in the future.
Overview
Passenger services between Bury and Rawtenstall were withdrawn by British Rail on 3 June 1972. Coal services to Rawtenstall ended in 1980 and formal closure of the line followed in 1982. The East Lancashire Railway Trust reopened the line on 25 July 1987. The initial service operated between Bury and Ramsbottom, via Summerseat. In 1991, the service was extended northwards from Ramsbottom to reach Rawtenstall, via Irwell Vale. However, two original stations on the line, closed to passengers by BR in 1972, have not reopened, Ewood Bridge & Edenfield and Stubbins. The latter was the junction of the lines to Accrington and Rossendale although there were no platforms serving these lines.
The Day out with Thomas events made a return to the railway after a two-year absence, following fresh negotiations, having previously been unable to reach an agreement in 2009 with HIT Entertainment, the owners of the Thomas brand

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BKC2D0 - The River Weaver is a river, navigable in its lower reaches, running in a curving route anti-clockwise across west Cheshire, northern England. Improvements to the river to make it navigable were authorised in 1720 and the work, which included eleven locks, was completed in 1732. An unusual clause in the enabling Act of Parliament stipulated that profits should be given to the County of Cheshire for the improvement of roads and bridges, but the navigation was not initially profitable, and it was 1775 before the first payments were made. Trade continued to rise, and by 1845, over £500,000 had been given to the county.
The major trade was salt. The arrival of the Trent and Mersey Canal at Anderton in 1773 was detrimental to the salt trade at first, but ultimately beneficial, as salt was tipped down chutes from the canal into barges on the river navigation. Access to the river was improved in 1810 by the Weston Canal, which provided a link to Weston Point, where boats could reach the River Mersey at most states of the tide, as the water was deeper. The navigation was completely reconstructed between 1870 and 1900, with the original locks being replaced by five much larger locks, capable of handling 1000-tonne coasters. With the opening of the Manchester Ship Canal, a new lock was constructed at Weston Marsh, which gave direct access to the ship canal without having to pass through the docks at Weston Point. All water from the river entered the canal nearby, and any surplus was released into the Mersey through the Weaver sluices, which were located just upstream of the junction.

With the demise of the CAB (Citizens Advice Bureau), the local library can be the place people turn for advice. This can be for legal matters, health issues or finance.
A well stocked library can help everyone access the information they need. Books may not do the job for you, thats down to the borrower of course.
It would be interesting to see if the person this lady was taking these books out for, benifitted from them 3 weeks later when they were returned/renewed.

The local library is a place to learn more about where you live. I was not born here, ended up here more by practicality than choice.
Usually libraries have microfiche of newspapers going back many decades and can serve as archives of local history.
For a small town, commuter dormatory for Liverpool and Manchester, Warrington has its place in history. Two IRA bombs, the second claiming two childs lives left a dark shadow over the town.
The troubles in Warrington started on Thursday 25 February 1993. Three IRA terrorists broke into a Warrington gas storage depot. After planting Semtex bombs, the trio tried to escape and shot a patrolling police officer.
Most of their bombs failed to detonate, but one did blow up. Thankfully, nobody was injured. The three IRA men were arrested and Warrington believed its brush with terrorism had passed. They were wrong.
On Saturday 20 March 1993 another IRA unit took revenge on Warrington for the arrests three weeks earlier. It was the day before Mothering Sunday and stores in Bridge Street were bustling with shoppers. Two bombs, planted in waste bins, exploded within a minute of each other.
I was in Warrington that day. Luckily in Sainsburys when the bombs exploded. I visit Belfast a lot and I am pleased that the two communities can manage to agree to disagree in peace now. I regret the loss of the innocent lives of three year old Jonathan Ball and 12 year old Tim Parry, who only lived streets away from me.
I hope libraries stay open to spread the experience of this, as well as the victorian explorers who brought Egyptian mummies to the museum and the 1651 scene of the last Royalist victory of the Civil War. Our lives would be poorer for not knowing the history of the soil we tread on every day.

A cracking place for kids books and also those books of trains, ships and machines young lads always love. In my experience too, we ended up going home with the full quota of 8 books.
Books develop a childs imagination. I am convinced reading and writing is aided by having books around and having a diverse library of them on your doorstep. If you are lucky you might get a corner with Lego to fiddle with too.
Dora the Explorer is an American animated television series created by Chris Gifford, Valerie Walsh, and Eric Weiner. Dora the Explorer became a regular series in 2000. The show can be found on the Nickelodeon cable television network.
Dora, the main character, is a young 7-year-old latin american girl who embarks on a trip in every episode in order to find something or help somebody. She asks the viewers at home to help her find new ways to reach places with the help of Map. She also teaches viewers Spanish, introducing them to short words and phrases.
Dora is available in many languages as TV series and books. In each country she pairs the native language with English. For example in Russia, the bilingualism is Russian-English. The series is called Dasha-sledopyt ('Dasha the Pathfinder'). Dasha is the children's name of Daria (Darya).

Libraries can be a great place to lose yourself. Perhaps in a distant place or at a crimescene. Maybe a murder, or even commit one.
I am alway surprised at the fiction reading matter that the most unlikely people enjoy. With the choice on offer, you can easily spend a few decades reading one section of your local library, for free. Alternatively, flurt about around genres.
Lynda La Plante, CBE (actually born Lynda J. Titchmarsh on 15 March 1943) is an English author, screenwriter and former actress, best known for writing the Prime Suspect television crime series.
La Plante's father was a salesman in Liverpool. She attended RADA and began her career as an actress, mainly on television. As Lynda Marchal, she appeared in several popular series including Z-Cars, The Sweeney, The Professionals and Bergerac. However as an actress she is perhaps best remembered as the hay-fever suffering ghost Tamara Novek in the BBC children's series Rentaghost.
She formed her own television production company, La Plante Productions, in 1994 and as La Plante Productions she wrote and produced the sequel to Widows, the equally gutsy She's Out (ITV, 1995).
The name 'La Plante' comes from her marriage to writer Richard La Plante, author of the book Mantis and Hog Fever. La Plante divorced Lynda in the early 1990s.

I had a long chat with this chap. His father had played football with the opposition during the war and that is why he selected this book ( Soccer at War: The Complete Record of British Football and Footballers During the Second World War) on this day.
'Soccer at War' is the compelling account of the national game during this defining moment in history. Rollin reveals how it was that football not only continued to be played and watched, but also grew in popularity and stature. He explains how, while the country fought for freedom, the sport offered morale-boosting appeal to war workers, servicemen, and civilians alike.
It tells of the hundreds of professional footballers who joined up, those who became heroes, and those who did not come back, the enthusiasts who administered the game in their spare time, and the players who turned out for thirty bob a week. The servicemen who went AWOL to play and others who hitch-hiked just to get to a game also find their place in the story, along with the record-breaking goalscoring achievements. Looking further afield to occupied Europe, 'Soccer at War' also exposes the role of football in Hitler's regime.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5743031658 - 'Auden plays in a band down in Portobello, east of Edinburgh which is a bit of a trendy up-coming neighbourhood (at least thats what the ESPC estate agents are saying). His band composes and plays material similar to Pendulum.
His musical style for the foot of the Royal Mile is more blues, Led Zeppelin, Eagles and classic rock however. He looks the part with his battered old bass.
The Tass lies on the High Street section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile, opposite the equally well known World's End. If you look at the cobbles in the High Street here you can see the outline in brass of the Netherbow Port, once the eastern gateway of the City of Edinburgh.
The Tass is named after one of Robert Burns' songs, The Silver Tassie (or 'goblet') and the Tass seeks to remember Scotland's greatest bard with a range of memorabilia relating to him. Don't worry though, this isn't overdone and it would be quite possible to enjoy the ambiance without being overwhelmed by the theme.
Much more obvious is the Tass's role as a focus for traditional and folk music, with live performances taking place most evenings. A choice of real ales and malt whiskies is on offer, and when I popped in the food looks fairly good too.

Mr Brownstone is a track from the album 'Appetite for Destruction' from 1987. Legend has it that Slash &
Izzy Stradlin wrote the song after lamenting their heroin habits. The line 'I used to do a little, but a little wouldn't do, so the little got more and more. I just keep trying to get a little better, said a little better than before' encapsulates it all.
Mr Brownstone was GnR's first UK double A-side single, but was not released anywhere else in that form. The band was from Hollywood, Los Angeles, California originating in 1985. Led by frontman and co-founder Axl Rose (born William Bruce Rose, Jr.), the band has released six studio albums so far &
an official live album while going through numerous line-up changes. As of 2010, Rose is the only consistent member of Guns N' Roses.
The debut album, 'Appetite for Destruction', has sold in excess of 28 million copies worldwide and even if you hate rock or metal music, in my opinion you should still probably have a copy. There was a long gap between early work and the much hyped 'Chinese Democracy' album.
On March 26, 2008, 'Dr Pepper' announced a plan to give everyone in America – except the band's former guitarists Slash and Buckethead – a free can of Dr Pepper if the band released Chinese Democracy before the end of 2008. Rose added, 'As some of Buckethead's performances are on our album, I'll share my Dr Pepper with him.'
With the announcement from Guns N' Roses regarding a release date in November, Tony Jacobs, Dr Pepper's Vice President of Marketing for Dr. Pepper, announced a free soda coupon campaign for 24 hours on Sunday, November 23, 2008. Due to 'heavy volume' on the server throughout the entire day it was impossible to submit for your free coupon. I cannot say I was gutted, I would rather drink 'Venos' than Dr Pepper myself!

Castlerigg Stone Circle (alt. Keswick Carles, Carles, Carsles or Castle-rig) near Keswick in England is one of the most visually impressive prehistoric monuments in Britain and is the most visited stone circle in Cumbria, England UK.
Every year, thousands of people make the short journey from Keswick to the plateau of Castlerigg Fell and to Chestnut Hill, on which the monument stands. This plateau forms the raised centre of a natural amphitheatre created by the surrounding fells and from within the circle it is possible to see some of the highest peaks in Cumbria: Helvellyn, Skiddaw, Grasmoor and Blencathra.
The stones are of a local metamorphic slate, set in a flattened circle, measuring 32.6 m (107 ft) at its widest and 29.5 m (97 ft) at its narrowest. The heaviest stone has been estimated to weigh around 16 tons and the tallest stone measures approximately 2.3m high. There is a 3.3m wide gap in its northern edge, which may have been an entrance.
Within the circle, abutting its eastern quadrant, is a roughly rectangular setting of a further 10 stones. The circle was probably constructed around 3200 BC (Late Neolithic/Early Bronze-Age), making it one of the earliest stone circles in Britain and possibly in Europe. It is important to archaeoastronomers who have noted that the sunrise during the Autumn equinox appears over the top of Threlkeld Knott, a hill 3.5 km to the east. Some stones in the circle have been aligned with the midwinter sunrise and various lunar positions.

Spizzenergi was a late 1970s English punk/new wave band led by Kenneth Spiers, known as Spizz. Championed by John Peel, The band changed its name several times using alternate names including Spizzoil and Athletico Spizz 80.
They were the first band to sign to Geoff Travis's Rough Trade Records and the first to top the newly created UK Indie Chart early in 1980. They were perhaps best known for their single 'Where's Captain Kirk?'

After a Siouxsie and the Banshees gig at Birmingham Odeon Cinema Spizz jumped on stage and sang into the microphones, on the back of which was given a recording deal. He was already performing (solo) by 1977. He soon got together with like-minded guitarist Pete Petrol (real name Pete O'Dowd). In 1978 Palmolive, drummer with The Slits, joined what was called Spizzoil for a few gigs.

That mark our place
and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch
be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

'First I want a kiss, then I want it all......'
Well its been a few weeks in arriving, but seminal Scousers Echo and the Bunnymen have finally arrived on my iPod.
Echo was the name given to the bands original drum machine (in legend, although maybe not in fact), that backed up Ian McCulloch (vox), Will Sergeant (guitar) and Les Pattinson (Bass). By 1980 a permanent drummer, Pete de Freitas was installed. He was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1989.
Ian McCulloch back in 1977 was one third of the 'Crucial Three', a bedroom band which also featured Julian Cope (Teardrop Explodes) and Pete Wylie (Wah Heat).
I have the first single (from Bill Drummond and David Balfe's Zoo label) 'The Pictures On My Wall' (b-sided with 'Read It In Books') with 'The Revenge Of Voodoo Billy' scratched in the run out groove, up in my loft. Its pretty much played to death. I think I bought it at 'Probe' the original record shop that was up in what is now known as Cavern walks in Liverpool. It stocked all the indie vinyl and sold tickets to Erics, the local punk band venue. Echo &
the Bunnymen made their debut at Liverpool's Eric's Club in November 1978.
The band were influenced by the same artists as their other North West contemporaries Joy Division, The Doors and Velvet underground. Like them, they often play Doors covers live.
For the ultimate resource on the band, checkout www.villiersterrace.com , to get a feel for the band, checkout the live album 'Never Stop: Live in Liverpool'.

The RAF Search and Rescue Force (SARF or SAR Force) is the Royal Air Force organization which provides around-the-clock aeronautical search and rescue cover in the United Kingdom, Cyprus and the Falkland Islands.
Although established with a primary role of military search and rescue, most of SARF's operational missions are spent in its secondary role, conducting civil search and rescue. This entails the rescue of civilians from the sea, on mountains, from flooded regions or other locations on land.
The aeronautical search and rescue roles are complemented by the related Royal Air Force Mountain Rescue Service whose trained mountaineers also conduct search and rescue in hilly terrain. SARF helicopters and RAF mountaineers often work together on mountain rescue incidents.
The SAR Force headquarters is situated at RAF Valley on Anglesey, North Wales and this helicopter is probably from 'C Flight' based there.

This one a true trip back to 1979. This comes from one of the few albums ('The Crack') on my iPod with every track rated four or five stars. If you ever had any punky leanings, you should enjoy this. 'The Ruts' were a band that burned bright for a brief period. Imagine 'The Clash' on steriods and you will have the picture.
The Ruts were a reggae-influenced British punk rock band. You may remember them for the 1979 Top 10 hit 'Babylon's Burning'. An earlier single 'In a Rut' on the 'People Unite' record label, was not a hit but was much played and highly regarded by the UK BBC Radio 1 disc jockey, John Peel. My old black vinyl copy in a plain white sleeve, still has pride of place for me. The grooves almost totally worn down due to over playing.
They formed August 1977, the band consisted of Malcolm Owen (vox), Paul Fox (guitar), John 'Segs' Jennings (bass) and Dave Ruffy (drums and ex-record shop manager). As part of Misty in Roots People Unite collective based in Southall in west London, the band were active in anti-racist causes and played a number of benefits for Rock Against Racism.
The Ruts' first single, 'In a Rut' was finally released on People Unite in January 1979, having been recorded back on 24 April 1978 at the aforementioned Free Range 8-track studios. It was backed up with anti-heroin tirade 'H-Eyes' on the B-side ('You're so young, you take smack for fun/It's gonna screw your head, you're gonna wind up dead'). DJ John Peel expressed his admiration for the group.
Debut album The Crack was produced by Mick Glossop and released in September 1979, reaching number 16 in the UK Albums Chart. With success came tradegy.
Malcolm Owen was found dead in the bathroom of his parents' house in Hayes, from a heroin overdose on 14th July 1980 at the age of 26. Prophetically, the B-side 'H-eyes' of 'In a Rut' was a song against heroin use, and two other songs, 'Dope for Guns' from the album The Crack, plus reggae lament 'Love in Vein' ('don't want you in my arms no more') were also anti-drug songs.
A year later, The Damned wrote a song, 'The Limit Club', about their deceased friend which mentions the 'velvet claws' that Fox talked about with reference to Owen's heroin addiction. The band continued as a very watered down Ruts D.C. (D.C. standing for the Latin term Da Capo, meaning 'back to the beginning') in a different musical vein. They released two albums, Animal Now (May 1981 on Virgin) and Rhythm Collision (July 1982 on Bohemian Records. Ruts D.C. split in 1983.
In July 2007 the band reformed for the first time in 27 years, and played a special benefit gig for Fox, following his diagnosis with lung cancer. Henry Rollins stood in for Owen. They were supported by Tom Robinson, The Damned, Misty in Roots, U.K. Subs, Splodge (Splodgenessabounds), John Otway
and the Peafish House Band which featured Lee Harris, (The Blockheads), Tony Barber (Buzzcocks) and Rowland Rivron, plus Edward Tudor-Pole and T. V. Smith. many characters from the British punk era. Fox died on 21 October of the same year, at the age of 56.

In 1970's Britain particularly, the 'Sus law' was the informal name for a stop and search law that permitted a police officer to act on suspicion, or 'sus', alone.
It was based upon Sections 4 and 6 of the Vagrancy Act 1824 which made it 'illegal for a suspected person or reputed thief to frequent or loiter in a public place with intent to commit an arrestable offence' and effectively permitted the police to stop and search and even arrest suspicious persons, purely to prevent crime.
The law caused much discontent among certain sections of the population, particularly black and ethnic minority communities, against whom the police use of the law was particularly targeted.
The sus law was abolished following race riots in St Pauls, Bristol, in 1980, and in Brixton, London, Toxteth, Liverpool, Handsworth and Chapeltown, Leeds in 1981, because its alleged abuse was believed to be a contributory factor to these events. Following Lord Scarman's inquiry into the cause of the Brixton riots, the sus law was dropped. Apart from The Ruts, a number of 1970's bands, including Linton Kwesi Johnson (aka LKJ) wrote songs or included references to it.
Fortunately we live now in slightly more enlightened times. An improving ethnic and cultural mix is encouraged in our police force.

The Psychedelic Furs came together in England's emerging punk scene in 1977, where they were initially called 'RKO', then 'Radio'. They then vacillated between calling themselves 'The Europeans' and 'The Psychedelic Furs,' playing gigs under both names. They were one of my fave bands of the early 1980's.
They scored several hits in their early career, but were launched to international attention in 1986 when the film director John Hughes borrowed their song title 'Pretty in Pink' for his movie of the same name. A newly recorded version of the song became the Psychedlic Furs' biggest hit to that time. 'Heartbreak Beat' from their 1987 album Midnight to Midnight, was to be the Furs' biggest Top 40 entry in the US.
The Psychedelic Furs' debut, a self-titled album from 1980, was produced by Steve Lillywhite. The LP quickly established the band on radio in Europe and was a #18 hit in the UK Albums Chart.
In 1981 Talk, Talk, Talk was released and this was one of the singles from it. Dumb Waiters was Written by the Furs and produced by Steve Lillywhite, it was released as a single in the April. The New York City dance-punk band The Rapture recorded a cover of the song, which was included on the B-side of their 1998 debut single 'The Chair That Squeaks'.
I still have the 7' single with a playable sleeve (a clear flexydisk bonded to it) of a 'A Psychedelic Furs Commercial'. Writer Dave Thompson said the song 'captures the band at its most frenzied, a state of mind which subsequent live versions only amplified'.
I saw this played live in Liverpool. If you like this track, the compilation 'Should God Forget: a Retrospective' is a good intro to the band.

Traditionally, a male waiting tables is called a 'waiter' and a female a 'waitress' with the PC gender-neutral version being a 'server'. In the UK,Germany and other Western countries, where minimum wages exist for servers and where tipping is not culturally entrenched, most tips take the form of rounding up to the nearest whole or half denomination of currency when the server is cashing a party out at their table. In the UK it is common practice to tip 10% of the cost of the meal.
By contrast, servers in Japan refuse tips because it isn't a Japanese custom.

'Some Cities' is Doves 3rd album and is the closest you will find to a Manchester concept album (see also Barry Adamsons Moss Side Story...). This single 'Black and White Town' peaked at number 6 on the UK Singles Chart.
The brothers Williams had spend a couple of decades in the music business, playing in bands and mixing with the Haçienda crowd. After meeting at The Haçienda in 1989, the Williams brothers and Jimi Goodwin formed Sub Sub, releasing their first single 'Space Face' in 1991, and then in 1993 they released 'Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use),' which reached #3 in the UK Singles Chart.
On the Williams twins' birthday in February 1996, the band's Ancoats studio caught fire and burned down, leading the band members to abandon their previous dance-oriented style and start afresh as alternative rock band Doves in 1998.
The band released three EPs in 1998 and 1999 on Casino Records, a subsidiary of Rob Gretton's Rob's Records. debut album Lost Souls in April 2000 was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, which they lost to fellow Mancunian and former collaborator 'Badly Drawn Boy'.
I have seen Doves a few times and I would recommend a look at the 'The Places Between: The Best of Doves' as a starting point if you like what you have heard here.

Manchester is a city of nudging half a million people in the northwest of England. Its textile heritage still leads to textiles in some places, such as Oz as 'Manchester'. It gained the title of 'the world's first industrialised city'.
As the result of an early-19th century factory building boom, Manchester was transformed from a township into a major mill town, borough and was later granted honorific city status in 1853. It is the third-most visited city in the United Kingdom by foreign visitors and the most visited in England outside London.
Manchester was the host of the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and among its other sporting connections are its two Premier League football teams, Manchester United and Manchester City (who now play in the Eastlads stadium).

Cast are an English rock band from Liverpool, formed in 1992 by John Power (vocals, guitar) and Peter Wilkinson (backing vocals, bass) after Power left The La's and Wilkinson's former band Shack had split. Following early line-ups with different guitarists and drummers, Liam 'Skin' Tyson (guitar) and Keith O'Neill (drums) joined Cast in 1993.
Emerging from the Britpop movement of the mid-1990s, Cast signed to Polydor Records and their debut album All Change (1995) became the highest selling album for the label. Further commercial success continued with the albums Mother Nature Calls (1997) and Magic Hour (1999), however the band's fourth album Beetroot (2001) was far less successful which led to the band's split soon after.
Cast are set to reunite for a UK tour in November 2010, although I haven't got a ticket yet. The last time I saw them was at a V festival in warrington on a bill with Pulp and the excellent Elastica.
The 1995 album 'All Change' is probably the one to track down if you fancy hearing some more of this stuff.

Melrose Abbey is a Gothic-style abbey in Melrose, Scotland. It was founded in 1136 by Cistercian monks, on the request of King David I of Scotland. It was headed by the Abbot or Commendator of Melrose. Today the abbey is maintained by Historic Scotland (open all year
entrance charge). The ruins of Melrose are widely considered among the most beautiful of religious houses in the United Kingdom, being especially notable for a wealth of well-preserved figure-sculpture, and its architecture is considered to be some of the finest in Scotland.
The east end of the abbey was completed in 1146. Other buildings in the complex were added over the next 50 years. The abbey was built in the form of a St. John's cross. A considerable portion of the abbey is now in ruins, though a structure dating from 1590 is maintained as a museum open to the public.
Alexander II and other Scottish kings and nobles are buried at the abbey. The embalmed heart of Robert the Bruce is also said to rest on the abbey's grounds, while the rest of his body is buried in Dunfermline Abbey. In 1812, a stone coffin that some speculated was that of Michael Scot the philosopher and 'wizard', was found in an aisle in the abbey's south chancel.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5167325589 - 'Adolescent sex - 'Japan' - Play this track here.
¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
An ipod track that I ripped from a red vinyl single from my loft. Japan came out of Catford, South London. They were often associated with the 'New Romantic' movement, but the band were far more sophisticated than this narrow definition.
Band members David Sylvian (Vox), Richard Barbieri (Keyboards), Mick Karn (Bass), Sylvian's brother Steve Jansen (percussion). Later Rob Dean joined playing guitar.
The band debuted on record with the 1978 album 'Adolescent Sex' from which this track was taken. It was followed up with 'Obscure Alternatives'. Both albums sold well in Japan (where the band's name helped them to gain a devoted cult following) and Holland, where the single 'Adolescent Sex' was a Top 30 hit. They also gained some popularity in Canada. Unfortunately in their native UK those albums were largely ignored.
Though influenced by artists such as the New York Dolls, Roxy Music and David Bowie, both albums were widely dismissed by the UK music press as being distinctly outmoded at a time when punk and New Wave bands were in ascendence. The band were managed by Simon Napier-Bell who has also managed The Yardbirds, Marc Bolan, London and Wham!. Check out www.simonnapierbell.com for a quick tour of his world or his book 'Black Vinyl, White Powder' a recommended rollercoaster ride through the most interesting 20 years of UK music.
1979's Quiet Life, heralded a significant change towards a more electronic sound. Their final two studio albums, Gentlemen Take Polaroids (1980) and Tin Drum (1981), were released on the Virgin label, and continued to expand their audience as the band refined its new sound and, somewhat unintentionally, became associated with the early-1980s New Romantic movement. Tin Drum in particular is critically regarded as one of the most innovative albums of the 1980s, with its startlingly original fusion of occidental and oriental sounds, and peaked just outside the UK Top 10. Its unconventional single 'Ghosts' reached no 5 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Japan's biggest domestic hit.
Japan's last ever performance was on 16 December 1982 in Nagoya, Japan. The band's final Hammersmith concerts were recorded to produce Oil On Canvas, a live album and video released in June 1983. This is a good starting point if you woul dlike to get to know the band. Tell 'em I sent you!
------------------------
To avoid controversy over the title, the album was renamed 'Japan' in some countries' Any controversy in this image should be rooted in the mind of the beholder.

This is a track I first heard on Tommy Vance's friday night rock show on BBC radio one. I rediscovered it many years later when a friend lent me 'Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus'. Spirit were a LA band from the late 1960's.
The original lineup of the group evolved from an earlier Los Angeles band, The Red Roosters, which included Randy California (guitars, vocals), Mark Andes (bass) and Jay Ferguson (vocals, percussion). With the addition of Ed Cassidy (drums) and keyboard player John Locke the new band was originally named the Spirits Rebellious (after a book by Khalil Gibran) but was soon shortened simply to Spirit. Randy California had also played with Jimi Hendrix (then known as Jimmy James) in Jimmy James and the Blue Flames in 1966.
In 1968 they toured with support band Led Zeppelin, who were heavily influenced by Spirit. Led Zeppelin played an extended medley during their early 1969 shows that featured 'Fresh Garbage' among other songs, Jimmy Page's use of a theremin has been attributed to his seeing Randy California use one which he had mounted to his amplifier, and it is now widely accepted that Page lifted the descending guitar figure from Spirit's instrumental 'Taurus' for Led Zeppelin's signature tune 'Stairway To Heaven'.
Mr Skin, a track about pornography (or maybe just Ed Cassidy, drummer of Spirit) has a great saxaphone solo in it, worth a listen just for that.

In 1977, The Adverts had a top 20 hit in the UK with the song 'Gary Gilmore's Eyes'. The lyrics describe an eye donor recipient realizing his new eyes came from the executed murderer. The song was later covered by the German punk rock band Die Toten Hosen. There is also a country version of the song, but that would not be allowed in my iTunes (obviously).
I was introduced to them through the John Peel radio show as a nipper. They were started in 1976 by T.V. Smith and Gaye Advert. Smith and Advert were both from Bideford, a small coastal town in Devon, and were later married. After relocating to London the two young punks recruited guitarist Pickup and drummer Driver, and The Adverts were born.

Will all on board this yankee station
Prepare themselves for battle stations.....
This evening I was having a quiet friday night with 'er indoors out in town. this track was one of those thrown at me by the iPod.
Infected was The The's second album released in 1986. It is generally underated and is very much a product of its times. A work mate at the time from the Wirral Ian Stevens introduced me to 'The The' through the killer track 'Uncertain Smile', an almost perfect 12'. I am eternally in his debt and his good lady wife Debby (although not Debbys C&
W friends, but that is another story).
Matt Johnson has been the only constant band member of 'The The'. In November 1977, he placed an advertisement in the NME, asking for 'Bass/lead guitarist into Velvets/Syd Barrett'. Johnson later placed a second advertisement in the NME, stating his new influences as 'The Residents/Throbbing Gristle'.
Following the Sheffield TG axis As a duo (Johnson and Keith Laws on synths/tapes), The The began playing shows with some of that era's most influential groups: Wire, Cabaret Voltaire, DAF, This Heat, The Birthday Party and Scritti Politti in 1980.
In 1983 The The released their official album debut, the synth-noir classic Soul Mining. It featured the minor UK hit 'This Is the Day', as well as a new recording of 'Uncertain Smile'. Produced by Matt Johnson and Paul Hardiman it featured guest appearances from Orange Juice's drummer Zeke Manyika, Jools Holland, Thomas Leer and J. G. Thirlwell (aka Foetus).
During The The's more prolific period of releases, from Soul Mining (1983) to Dusk (1992), most artwork used on the albums and single releases was produced by Matt Johnson's brother Andrew Johnson, using the pseudonym Andy Dog. The artwork has a distinctive style, and sometimes courted controversy, most notably the initial release of the 1986 single 'Infected' which featured a masturbating devil and was withdrawn from sale and re-issued with an edited version of the same drawing.
For the 1986 album Infected, The The still only consisted of Johnson, but augmented by session musicians and featuring friends such as drummer/singer Zeke Manyika and Rip Rig &
Panic singer Neneh Cherry. This album spawned four charting singles in the UK, notably 'Heartland' (better known by its famous chorus 'This is the 51st State of the USA') and made the UK Top 30. It was also unusual for having a full length accompanying film. Costing hundreds of thousands of pounds, Infected: The Movie was shot on locations in Bolivia, Peru and New York. Different songs were directed by different directors, mainly Tim Pope and Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson (of Throbbing Gristle). Throughout 1986-1987 Johnson toured the world extensively with Infected: The Movie, showing the film in cinemas in place of performing live concerts. The film was also shown twice in its entirety on Channel 4 in the UK and on MTV's 120 Minutes in the USA.
In 1987 Johnson also took some tentative steps back into live performance. Whilst promoting Infected: The Movie in Australia he had a chance encounter with Billy Bragg who persuaded him to return to Britain and support Red Wedge, a coalition of like-minded musicians supporting the British Labour Party in its election campaign. Johnson agreed and enrolled long time friend and collaborator Zeke Manyika to join him in performing shows in London featuring stripped down versions of political The The songs such as 'Heartland'. This experience convinced Johnson to put a band together once again.
By 1988, The The was an actual band again, Johnson having recruited ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, one of my own musical heroes. It is fair to say that Matt and 'The The' drew on the shortfalls of Thatchers Britain. With the new austerity maybe there is a place again for a similar band of similar political colour to step up to the plate. Please check 'The The' out.
On an aside, I remember backpacking around India with a C90 cassette tape of Infected with 'Only A Grocers Daughter' from the Blow Monkeys on the reverse. Not one of my favourite politicians but I can have respect for her as possibly the strongest character since Churchill in that post in British history. Respect and admiration, obviously two very different emotions.

Todays first track up on my Ipod shuffle was this one. Its is the first in my new set that hopefully will marry up some of my listening habits with some of my photographic ones!
I dont have chance to 'shuffle' every day, so unfortunately it wont be one a day, but do keep up if you can!
Salford Northern Soul club night DJ Ian Brown and animator John Squire were the hub of this band. A bit of a soundtrack to my own Madchester days back in the late 1980's. Blimey I must have spent a fortune in Aflecks Palace on dodgy Harris Tweed Jackets (check the Orb) and silk ties.
The brilliant first seminal album and the wrangling later with the Silvertone label is legendary. The Second Coming was good, but those four years delay took their toll. Ian Brown, now into his 10th solo album has gone on to better things including the 'Q Awards Legend Award' in 2007.
His 2001 track 'Fear' is one of my favourites. Apparently inspired by Malcolm X and his preaching of 'control through language', each line contains an acronym from the word 'fear'. EG 'Fallen empires are ruling'. Grab a listen here.

I had just been to the sweetshop over the road when I noticed all the bind weed growing up over the metal railings. I took a few shots with an infra red Hoya R72 filter over my lens to show up all the summer foilage. The noise that IR causes in the sensor provides a lot of grain like texture, much like the now discontinued Kodak HIE 35mm spy film.
Certain infrared-sensitive films like Kodak HIE must only be loaded and unloaded in total darkness[11]. Infrared black-and-white films require special development times but development is usually achieved with standard black-and-white film developers and chemicals (like D-76). Kodak HIE film has a polyester film base that is very stable but extremely easy to scratch, therefore special care must be used in the handling of Kodak HIE throughout the development and printing/scanning process to avoid damage to the film.
As of November 2, 2007, 'Kodak preannouncing the discontinuance' of HIE Infrared 35 mm film stating the reasons that, 'Demand for these products has been declining significantly in recent years, and it is no longer practical to continue to manufacture given the low volume, the age of the product formulations and the complexity of the processes involved.' At the time of this notice, HIE Infrared 135-36 was available at a price of about £7 a roll at places where it could still be obtained. What a shame :-(
This is an approximation of what these houses looked like in the january cold snap earlier this year. Obviously without their distinctive red and yellow doors!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4772241526 - 'While editing this image of TonyD taken in Warrington I was listening to an ipod playlist of Curtis Mayfield and Isaac Hayes tracks from the blaxploitation years of the 70's.
Hayes was singer-songwriter, actor, and musician and one of the main creative forces behind southern soul music label Stax Records. There he served as both an in-house songwriter and producer with partner David Porter during the mid-1960s.
In the late 1960s, Hayes became a recording artist, and recorded successful soul albums such as Hot Buttered Soul (1969) and Black Moses (1971). He was also the Stax label's premier artist. In addition to his work in pop music, Hayes was a film score composer for motion pictures. His best known work, for the 1971 soul cinema classic film Shaft, earned Hayes an Academy Award for Best Original Song (the first Academy Award received by an African-American in a non-acting category) and two Grammy Awards. He received a third Grammy for the album Black Moses.
Super Fly is the third studio album by American soul and funk musician Curtis Mayfield, released in July 1972 on Curtom Records. It was released as the soundtrack for the blaxploitation film of the same name. Widely considered a classic of 1970s soul and funk music, Super Fly was a nearly immediate hit. Its sales were bolstered by two million-selling singles, 'Freddie's Dead' and the title track. Pusherman is the third killer track on the disk. Super Fly is one of the few soundtracks to out-gross the film it accompanied.
In 1997, Rhino Records released a 25th Anniversary collection of the Super Fly album with a bonus disc of demo versions of songs, radio spots and interviews.
Isaac Hayes died of a stroke in August 2008, aged nearly 66.
He will probably be best remembered when during the late 1990s, Hayes gained new popularity as the voice of Chef animated TV series South Park. Chef was a soul-singing cafeteria worker at the South Park kids' school. A song from the series performed by Chef, 'Chocolate Salty Balls (P.S. I Love You)', received international radio airplay in 1999. It reached number-one on the UK singles chart. The track also appeared on the album Chef Aid: The South Park Album in 1998.
He left the show however in a row about the South Park episode 'Trapped in the Closet'. This was a satire of Scientology which aired in Nov 2005. In a response the South Park authors stated
'He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin.'
The South Park season 10 premiere (aired March 22, 2006) featured 'The Return of Chef', a thinly veiled telling of the affair from Parker and Stone's point of view. Using sound clips from past episodes, it depicts Chef as having been brainwashed and urges viewers (via Kyle talking to the town) to 'remember Chef as the jolly old guy who always broke into song' and not to blame Chef for his defection, but rather, as Kyle stated, 'be mad at that fruity little club for scrambling his brains.'
During the spring of 2008 before his death, Hayes shot scenes for a comedy about soul musicians inspired by the history of Stax Records entitled Soul Men, in which he appears as himself in a supporting role. His voice can be heard in the film in a voice-over role as Samuel L. Jackson, Bernie Mac, and Sharon Leal's characters are traveling through Memphis.
Two months after his death, the South Park episode 'The China Probrem' was dedicated to him.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4714928394 - 'The Celtic cross is a symbol that combines a cross with a ring surrounding the intersection.
In the Celtic Christian world it was combined with the Christian cross and this design was often used for high crosses. These are free-standing crosses made of stone and often richly decorated.
With the Celtic Revival, the shape, usually decorated with interlace and other motifs from Insular art, became popular for funerary monuments and other uses, and has remained so, spreading well beyond the British Isles.
It is popular in Cornwall where an individual feeling of ancient culture lives on, as can be seen in the Barnoon cemetary here, which overlooks the St Ives surfing beach of Porthmeor.
In Celtic regions of Ireland and later in Great Britain, many free-standing upright crosses or high crosses were erected by Irish monks, beginning at least as early as the 7th century. Some of these 'Celtic' crosses bear inscriptions in runes. There are surviving free-standing crosses in Cornwall (famously St Piran's cross at Perranporth) and Wales, on the island of Iona and in the Hebrides, as well as the many in Ireland. Other stone crosses are found in the former Northumbria and Scotland, and further south in England.
Due to its simplicity as a symboil, in Germany, the Celtic cross was adopted by a prohibited neo-Nazi party (VSBD/PdA) leading to the ban of the symbol.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4726413997 - 'Mining in Cornwall has a long history and began in the early Bronze Age approximately 2,150 BC. It ended with the South Crofty tin mine in Cornwall closing in 1998. Tin and later also copper were the most productive of the metals extracted. Some tin mining continued long after mining of other metals had become unprofitable.
Tin is one of the earliest metals to have been exploited in Britain. Chalcolithic metal workers discovered that by putting a small amount of tin (5 - 20%) in molten copper an alloy called bronze was produced that was easier to work and harder than copper. The oldest production of tin-bronze is in Turkey about 3500 BC but exploitation of the tin resources in Britain is believed to have started before 2000 BC, with a thriving tin trade developing with the civilisations of the Mediterranean. The strategic importance of tin in forging bronze weapons brought the southwest of Britain into the Mediterranean economy at an early date. Later tin was also used in the production of pewter.
Cornwall was traditionally thought to have been visited by metal traders from the eastern Mediterranean. However, it is likely that the tin trade with the Mediterranean was controlled by the Veneti. Britain was one of the places proposed for the Cassiterides, that is Tin Islands.
As South-West Britain was one of the few parts of England to escape glaciation, tin ore was readily available on the surface. Originally it is likely that alluvial deposits in the gravels of streams were exploited but later underground working took place. Shallow cuttings were then used to extract ore.
Diodorus Siculus around 1 BC had this to say about ancient tin mining in Britain. 'They that inhabit the British promontory of Balerion by reason of their converse with strangers are more civilised and courteous to strangers than the rest are. These are the people that prepare the tin, which with a great deal of care and labour, they dig out of the ground, and that being done the metal is mixed with some veins of earth out of which they melt the metal and refine it. Then they cast it into regular blocks and carry it to a certain island near at hand called Ictis for at low tide, all being dry between there and the island, tin in large quantities is brought over in carts.'
By the 19th century, the areas of Cornwall around Gwennap and St Day and on the coast around Porthtowan were among the richest mining areas in the world and at its height the Cornish tin mining industry had around 600 steam engines working to pump out the mines (many mines stretched out under the sea and some went down to great depths). Adventurers put up the capital, and the mines would hopefully return them a profit.
During the 20th century various ores became briefly profitable, and mines were reopened, but today none remain. Dolcoath mine, (Cornish for Old Ground), the 'Queen of Cornish Mines' was, at a depth of 3500 feet (1067 m), for many years the deepest mine in the world, not to mention one of the oldest before its closure in 1921. Indeed, the last working tin mine in Europe, South Crofty, was to be found near Camborne until its closure in March 1998. An attempt was made to reopen it but the mine was then abandoned. There have been local media reports in September 2006 that South Crofty is being considered for re-opening as the price of tin has soared however the site is now part of a Compulsory Purchase Order (October 2006). On the wall outside the gate is some graffiti dating from 1999:
'Cornish lads are fishermen and Cornish lads are miners too. / But when the fish and tin are gone, what are the Cornish boys to do?'
Many old mine buildings with a chimney for the steam engine exhaust dot the Cornish landscape today. This one has been sensitively restored and put to residential use.

Cairo Street Chapel is the second oldest surviving place of worship in Warrington and is tucked away just away from the modern shopping area. It holds a lot of history of the town in many of the characters connected with it.
Robert Yates was the founder, ejected from the Church of England in 1662, he obtained a licence for public worship. In 1689, religious dissent was permitted by the Act of Toleration. This Act enabled Dissenters to build their own places of worship and in 1703, following the raising of sufficient money through subscriptions, a chapel was built on land behind Randle Myddleton’s Smithy in Sankey Street. This is now Cairo Street.
A deed signed between Dr. Charles Owen Minister of the Chapel and the Earl of Warrington refers to a “late erected building or meeting place”.
It was during the ministry of Dr. Owen in 1745 that the present larger chapel was built.
Dr. Owen was the minister of the chapel for fifty years from 1696 to 1746 and it was he who lead consolidation and growth of the chapel.
In 1863 the chapel was extensively repaired, the old gallery was taken down and the interior re-seated to make it look much as it does in this photograph.
The Revd. John Seddon followed Charles Owen in the Ministry at Cairo Street Chapel or Sankey Street Chapel as it was then known. The son of a dissenting Minister born in Hereford and educated at Caleb Rotherham’s Academy in Kendal, he campaigned and fundraised tirelessly for the establishment in 1757 of The Warrington Academy.
He was a lecturer at the Academy, its Secretary and Minister of the Chapel. Active in many spheres of dissenting and town life, John Seddon was the first President of The Warrington Public Library.
Another famous member of the chapel was Frederick Monks 1834-1912, an entrepreneur and industrialist, his enlightened treatment of his workforce was influenced by the ethical preaching of Pearsall Carpenter. The high esteem in which he was held is testified by the 2ft high clock of solid
brass open work on a marble stand. On it are inscribed the words “presented to Mr. F. Monks of the Wire Department of the White Cross
Wire and Iron Co. Ltd. as a token of respect on his retirement from active management in connection with the company in July 1874”. Frederick
Monks presented the Golden Gates to Warrington where they currently stand outside the Town Hall.
Joseph Priestley. Scientist, Minister and Thinker (1733-1804) is perhaps the best known individual associated with the Academy. He is now more known as a great scientist but as a lecturer he introduced the subjects of chemistry, anatomy and civic responsibility to the curriculum of the academy. He was however primarily a Minister and was ordained at Warrington. His belief that Jesus was an ethical teacher and not a God influenced greatly the development of Unitarianism.
A supporter of the French Revolution and a campaigner against slavery he left England after his home and chapel in Birmingham were burnt by a mob. After leaving England and settling in America in 1794, he established the first American Unitarian Church in Philadelphia.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4653594686 - 'This is an image taken in the first floor historic reading room of the Manchester University John Rylands library. This serves as the special Collections section of the John Rylands University Library (JRUL). It is a remarkable victorian gothic building right in the heart of the city's shopping district Deansgate.
The library, which opened to the public in 1900, was founded by Mrs Enriqueta Augustina Rylands in memory of her late husband, John Rylands. The collections include medieval illuminated manuscripts, examples of the earliest forms of European printing, including the Gutenberg Bible, and the personal papers of notable local figures such as Elizabeth Gaskell and chemist John Dalton.
Enriqueta Rylands purchased a site on Deansgate, at the heart of Manchester city centre, in 1889 for her planned memorial library and commissioned a design from architect Basil Champneys. Mrs Rylands had originally intended the library as a principally theological collection and the building, which is a very fine example of Victorian Gothic, has much of the appearance of a church, although the actual concept was of an Oxford college library on a larger scale.
The core of the library was formed around the collection of 40,000 books including many rarities assembled by George John Spencer, which Mrs Rylands purchased in 1892. The library was finally opened to readers on 1 January 1900. It was illuminated internally by electricity (rather than gas which was more common at the time). The use of electricity was still in its early stages, the supply had to be generated on-site. This took some years to achieve due to the inexperience of local contractors, but the library became one of the first public buildings in Manchester to be lit by electricity and continued to generate its own supply until 1950.
Basil Champneys was given the rare honour of speaking about the building at a general meeting of the Royal Institute of British Architects and was awarded the Royal Gold Medal in 1912. The library was granted listed building status on 25 January 1952, which was upgraded to Grade I on 6 June 1994.
In the Rylands Gallery on the lower floor, you can see some of the most important items from the Library's collections including magnificent medieval manuscripts and examples of the earliest books ever printed. The gallery is organized around seven themes. Faiths, History of the Bible, Beautiful Books, Science, World Literatures, Everyday Life and Manchester.
It is one of Manchester's building gems and inside more resembles a cathedral than a library. Marble statues of Enriqueta and John Rylands watch over the readers from either end of the room. If you are in the city, make an excuse to spend some time to drink in the history.

Like many kids I stumbled across American super hero Marvel comics at school where I enjoyed Spider-man X-men and all those Stan Lee and Jack Kirby productions. Walking into the Millenium Comics shop is like going back in time for me. The smell of new editions and the slight mustyness of comics from the pre-Disney times. The smaller impring DC Comics can also be found here.
Marvel Comics issue one (or #1 as it is labelled) appeared in October 1939. It included the first appearance of Carl Burgos' android superhero the Human Torch, and the first generally available appearance of Bill Everett's anti-hero Namor the Sub-Mariner, among other features.
With the second issue the series title changed to Marvel Mystery Comics. Soon, Jack Kirby created one of the first patriotically themed superheroes, Captain America, in Captain America Comics #1. This had a circulation of approaching a million.
Through the years popularity grew. In 1971 the US Dept of Health, Education, and Welfare approached Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Stan Lee to do a comic-book story about drug abuse. Lee agreed and wrote a three-part Spider-Man story portraying drug use as dangerous and unglamorous.
Ironically the industry's self-censorship board, the Comics Code Authority, refused to approve the story because of the presence of narcotics, deeming the context of the story irrelevant. Lee, with Goodman's approval, published the story regardless in The Amazing Spider-Man #96-98 (May-July 1971), without the Comics Code seal.
Marvel attempted to diversify, and with the updating of the Comics Code achieved moderate to strong success with titles themed to horror (The Tomb of Dracula), martial arts, (Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu), sword-and-sorcery (Conan the Barbarian, Red Sonja), satire (Howard the Duck) and science fiction (2001: A Space Odyssey, 'Killraven' in Amazing Adventures, Star Trek, and, late in the decade, the long-running Star Wars series.
A lot of my early comics were shared and passed around friends at school. Occasionally, comic fairs would be places to pick these up in Manchester or perhaps some 'Mad' back issues featuring the mascot, Alfred E. Neuman. Mad was the Simpsons of its time, witty and irreverant.
All kinds of gold nuggets can be found in the shop. The enjoyment of discovery better than the predictability of winning an ebay auction. If you are in Northwich, find them at the station end of Witton Street or at their other shop, open every day except sunday, in Warrington

The Phoenix Brewery is in Green Lane, Heywood, Lancashire. (OL10 2EP) just outside Manchester, UK. It is a regular at my local Grappenhall beer festival and is described as a 'English Strong Ale'. It is the reason I always buy a ticket for the first night (Friday at a premium of a pound - about $1.40 or EUR 1.15) in order to ensure I try at least a few halves of it. Often by Saturday it is already finito!
As can be seen it warrants its own pump at the festival, rather than just gravity fed like the casks at the back. Here are a few tasting notes from mixed sources:
Copper coloured ... creamy white head ... rich sweet fruit nose ... soft toffee fruits ... lots of big resiny fruits ... little bitter in background.
A nut-brown beer with a light tan head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, and nuts. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, and nice grassy and fruity hop notes, leading to a dry grassy and grapefruity finish where notes of toffee lingers.
This beer hits the right spot each time I drink it. Big, bold &
brazen. Drinking well below it’s abv. Pours gold with a soft white head. Complex flavours of hops, citrus &
some malt.Very fruity on the swallow with a suggestion of coriander and herbs in the aftertaste. A really good ale which could easily, mistakenly, be drunk as a session beer.
Clear amber colour, white head. Aroma of caramel/toffee, bit of chocolate. Flavour is soft toffee, nuts, light fruity, citrus, some roasted malts. Light bitter finish. A nice start of the day.
Well, I would say a ringing endorsement there :-)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8FBC9 - One of Britain's greatest industrial heritage sites, showing how a complete industrial community lived
Quarry Bank overflows with the atmosphere of the Industrial Revolution. A visit to the cotton mill, built in 1784, and powered by Europe's most powerful working waterwheel, will certainly stimulate your senses.
The clatter of machinery and hiss of steam engines make an astonishing noise. Take a guided tour of the Apprentice House, which housed the pauper children who worked in the Mill and learn about their working and home lives.
Visit the stunning garden, the Greg family's picturesque valley retreat adjoining the Mill. Stroll to Styal village, built by the Greg family to house the Mill workers, and still a thriving community, or walk through ancient woods along the River Bollin.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4589609737 - 'Saltaire United Reformed Church is one of the UK's most precious Victorian architectural gems. The church was built by Sir Titus Salt in 1859 near Shipley along from Bradford, West Yorkshire. Its style is Italianate religious architecture. It has been described as a classic 'Cathedral of Congregationalism'.
Saltaire was Sir Titus Salt's legacy. Sir Titus Salt, 1st Baronet (20 September 1803 – 29 December 1876), born in Morley, near Leeds, was a manufacturer, politician and philanthropist in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. I find him pretty inspirational, he was certainly way ahead of his time. His father Daniel Salt was a fairly successful businessman and was able to send Titus to Batley Grammar School.
In 1833 he had taken over the running of his father's business and within twenty years had expanded it to be the largest employer in Bradford. In 1848 Titus Salt became mayor of Bradford. He had a social conscience and took steps to look for solutions to the pollution from the many factory chimneys in the city.
Around 1850, he decided to build a large mill to consolidate his textile manufacture in one place, but he 'did not like to be a party to increasing that already over-crowded borough', and he bought some land three miles from Bradford, adjacent to Shipley next to the River Aire. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the Midland Railway, main arteries of the day were adjacent.
Building of his mill was begun in 1851. He opened it with a grand banquet on his 50th birthday, 20 September 1853. Following that public conscience he then set about building the houses, bathhouses, institute, hospital, almshouses and churches, that make up Saltaire. very revolutionary for the time. Similar ventures were persued by the quaker chocolate barons at Bournville and by Rowntree in York. Salt built the Congregational Church pictured here (now Saltaire United Reformed Church) at his own expense in 1858–59. He donated the land on which the Wesleyan Chapel was built by public subscription in 1866–68.
Sir Titus commissioned architects Lockwood and Mawson to design the building, as they had designed a number of other important Italianate buildings in Bradford City centre.
His body is interred at a mausaleum at the church and can be viewed. Reportidly at his funeral 100,000 people lined the route. Many people had him to thank for his far sightedness and care for his fellow man.
The church today is grade I listed. The entrance is up six steps under a portico supported by six unfluted Corinthian columns and topped by a fretted tower with cupola.
Inside are hollow Corinthian columns with beautiful Scagliola exteriors, an Italian technique implemented by Mr. Dolan of Manchester. Two ornate chandeliers of ormolu and cut glass hang from the ceiling, of such great weight that additional roof trusses had to be inserted to support them. Originally lit by gas, they were made by Hausburg of Liverpool.
The existing organ, built by Peter Conacher and Co. of Huddersfield, was installed in 1890, rebuilt at the end of the Second World War.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4521874232 - 'The classic Cadbury Creme Egg is manufactured to look like an egg inside and out. For the benefit of any one who has never seen a 171 calorie creme egg, it consists of a thick milk chocolate shell, housing a white and yellow filling made from egg, thick white cream, sugars and other additives. Creme Eggs are a best-selling confectionery item between New Year's Day and Easter in the UK (when sale stops). There are annual sales in excess of 200 million eggs and a brand value estimated of approximately £45 million.
They are produced by Cadbury UK in the United Kingdom, and under licence by The Hershey Company in the United States. The eggs are manufactured at the Bournville factory in Birmingham with around 1.5 million being hatched from the production line each day.
While filled eggs were first manufactured by the Cadbury Brothers in 1923, the Creme Egg in its current form was introduced in 1971.
The Cadbury Creme Egg is manufactured by making a chocolate shell in a half-egg shaped mould, which is then filled with white fondant and a dab of yellow fondant to simulate the yolk. Two mould halves are closed very quickly and cooled to allow the chocolate to set. When the moulds are opened, the eggs fall onto a conveyor which transports them, first to the foiling machines and then to the finished packing.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5231735130 - 'Ticket To Ride - 'The Beatles' - Play this track here.
¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
Heres a track in celebration last week of itunes finally being able to offer the Beatles back catalog for download. On November 16th 17 official Beatles albums were made available for sale on Apple's iTunes Store. Also 13 remastered albums.
Now I must admit I was born slightly too late to appreciate totally the fab four's output. Revolver and Sgt Peppers are in my collection and a number of those singles compilations. No doubt that Lennon &
McCartney were the Morrissey &
Marr of that sixties generation. Before I get barraged with comments, that was just a bit of friendly Manc/Scouse banter!
'Ticket to Ride' is a song by The Beatles from their 1965 album, Help!. It was recorded 15th February 1965 and released two months later. The song lyrics describe a girl 'riding out of the life of the narrator', the inspiration of the title phrase is unclear.
McCartney said it was 'a British Railways ticket to the town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight', while Lennon said it described cards indicating a clean bill of health carried by Hamburg prostitutes in the 1960s. The Beatles played in Hamburg early in their musical career, and 'ride/riding' was slang for having sex.
The track has been covered by Sly and Robbie, The Bee Gees and Vanilla Fudge. Red Drawf fans will remember the episode 'Tikka to Ride', in accordance with the theme of curry on which the storyline focuses.
------------------------
Early bus operators had two problems to solve. One was that of fare dodgers and the other was the possibility of conductors who might fiddle the takings. Early machines were devised that punched tickets at appropriate stages (&
sounded a bell) then retained the coloured clipping. Hence the name 'Bell Punch' and the reference to lady bus conductors as 'Clippies' (see 'On The Buses').
The Bell Punch Company produced an automated version of their pre-printed ticket system, which they called 'Ultimate'. These used continuous ticket rolls with the values printed on them. Each ticket carried a serial number and a pre-printed value. The machines had several tracks each of which had a lever at the front that ejected a ticket, which was then roughly torn off against a serrated cutter.
The fare stage could be printed in one of three positions on the bottom of the ticket. Each new ticket roll had a piece of adhesive tape (which the conductor had to lick) to join it to the end of the old one, which was supposed to prevent the conductor having to change rolls mid-journey. The system coped better with changing fare structures, but after a while, the machines became unreliable and would jam up. It was not uncommon to see conductors tearing off tickets from the back of the machines at busy times.

Salad were a cool, annoying likeable UK pop group formed in London in 1992, that included Dutch vocalist/keyboardist and MTV presenter Marijne van der Vlugt. She is the daughter of Dutch actor Bram van der Vlugt. The first album, Drink Me from which this excellent cut is taken from, was released in 1995. It reached #16 of the UK Albums Chart.
That whole album in in the same vein as this track. If you like this, I urge you to track it down, make yourself a pot of tea or settle down with something stronger, transport yourself to the

------------------------
Chemistry sets were educational toys allowing the user (typically a bored teenager) to perform simple chemistry experiments.
In the United Kingdom, Thomas Salter Science produced a series of seven chemistry sets in the 1970s. mainstays in these sets were vials of chemicals, exotic labels, test tubes and cork stoppers, an instruction manual, litmus paper, safety goggles and a burner of some description.
Amateur chemistry or home chemistry is the pursuit of chemistry as a private hobby. It should not be confused with clandestine chemistry, which involves the illicit production of controlled drugs.
Throughout much of the 20th century, amateur chemistry was an unexceptional hobby, with high-quality chemistry sets readily available, and laboratory suppliers freely selling to hobbyists. For example, Linus Pauling had no difficulty in procuring potassium cyanide at the age of eleven. However, due to increasing concerns about terrorism, drugs and safety, suppliers became increasingly reluctant to sell to amateurs, and chemistry sets were steadily toned down. This trend has gradually continued, leaving hobbyists (suspected of working with Al-Qaeda or similar) in many parts of the world without access to most reagents.

However the lack of an official 'Jelly Belly' trademark or logo on this jar (or indeed Mr jelly Belly as mascot) leads me to believe that these are in fact imposter beans (possibly come by way of ebay and Hong Kong). Let the buyer beware.
If you are new to this type of candy, concept is that there are about 50 flavours and a few specials. These can be mixed together in the mouth to replicate the experience of a cocktail. EG Coconut and Watermelon.
Ronald Reagan was a big fan of them apparently and had a jar of them on his desk in the White House and on Air Force One next to the big red button labelled 'Nuke'. Through perserverance he also made them the first jelly beans in outer space, sending them on the 1983 Challenger shuttle for the astronauts. You would have thought Mars and Milky Way bars would be most appropriate. The jelly beans were proven at low gravity, hence got the gig.
In recent years the high sugar content of the original beans has been offset by the introduction of a range of 'Sport' and 'Extreme Sport' beans. These contain vitamines, electrolytes(?) and the latter caffeine. All safe for our vege' breatheren and 100% Kosher.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4980395604 - 'Tenement Funster - 'Queen' - Play this track here.
¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
A cracking track that took me back to my schooldays, turned up in todays shuffle on my iPod.
'Tenement Funster' is Roger Taylor's song on the Sheer Heart Attack album. He sang the lead vocals. Backing track consisted of Taylor's drums, Mercury's piano, Deacon's bass and May's Red Special guitar. It's a typical Taylor track about youth and rebellion. It also includes echo effects with May's guitar, like in 'Brighton Rock'. The last couple of guitar notes overlap into 'Flick Of The Wrist'. The original working title for the song was 'Tin Dreams'.
Sheer Heart Attack is the third album by British rock group Queen, released November 1974. It was produced by Queen and Roy Thomas Baker for EMI in the United Kingdom, and Elektra in the US.
The album launched the band to mainstream popularity both in the UK and internationally and at a time when I was at secondary school. My school bag had a big 'Queen' and 'Led Zep' logo scrawled on it. Due to a lack of cash (or bigger brothers) in my house, my school friends and older brothers often supplied the vinyl in a gatefold sleeve, on loan.
The first single, 'Killer Queen' reached #2 in the British charts and provided Queen with their first US Top 20 hit. Sheer Heart Attack was also the first Queen album to hit the US Top 20, peaking at #12 in 1975. Digressing from the progressive themes featured on their first two albums, Sheer Heart Attack featured more conventional rock tracks and marked a step towards the classic Queen sound.
In recent years, it has been listed by multiple publications as one of the band's best works and I would recommend it as a starting point to listen to some of the legacy of early queen.
------------------------
Many tower blocks were built in the UK after the Second World War. The first residential tower block, 'The Lawn' was constructed in Harlow, Essex in 1951
it is now a Grade II listed building. In many cases Tower Blocks were seen as a 'quick-fix' to cure problems caused by crumbling and unsanitary 19th century dwellings or to replace buildings destroyed by German aerial bombing. Initially, they were welcomed, and their excellent views made them popular living places.
Later, as the buildings themselves deteriorated, they grew a reputation for being undesirable low cost housing, and many tower blocks saw rising crime levels, increasing their unpopularity. One response to this was the great increase in the number of housing estates built, which in turn brings its own problems. In the UK, tower blocks particularly lost popularity after the partial collapse of Ronan Point in 1968.
Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland, is believed to contain the highest concentration of tower blocks in the UK - examples include the Hutchensontown C blocks in the Gorbals, the 20-storey blocks in Sighthill, and the 31-storey Red Road flats in the city's north east. However, on the whole, London has the largest number of high-rise residential buildings in the UK
Greater Manchester had more than its fair share of tower blocks, one of the worst examples being in Hulme. In Hulme, a new and (at the time) innovative design for deck access and tower living was attempted. This consisted of curved rows of low-rise flats with deck access far above the streets was created, known as the 'Crescents' (which were, with unintentional irony, architecturally based on terraced housing in Bath).
In this arrangement, motor vehicles remained on ground level with pedestrians on concrete walkways overhead, above the smoke and fumes of the street. People living in these new flats were rehoused from decaying Victorian slums which lacked electricity, running water, bathrooms or indoor toilets, and were mostly overcrowded.
The names of the 'Crescents' harked back to the Georgian era, being named after architects of that time: Robert Adam Crescent, Charles Barry Crescent, William Kent Crescent and John Nash Crescent, together with Hawksmoor Close (a small straight block of similar design attached to Charles Barry Crescent). At the time, the 'Crescents' won several design awards, and introduced technologies such as underfloor heating to the masses.
They were also popular because they were some of the first council homes in Manchester to have central heating. The development even had some notable first occupants, such as Nico and Alain Delon.
This is an old shot of mine, but thankfully a lot of this system built housing has now been replaced or renovated in Manchester. The local city council and its housing associations like City South HA that covers Hulme are on track for a high proportion of dwellings to meet Decent Homes standard by this years target.
This was a three shot panorama shot in infra-red.

Hitler began the dictation of the book while imprisoned for what he considered to be 'political crimes' after his failed revolution in Munich in November 1923. Though Hitler received many visitors earlier on, he soon devoted himself entirely to the book. As he continued, Hitler realized that it would have to be a two-volume work, with the first volume scheduled for release in early 1925. The prison governor of Landsberg noted at the time that 'he [Hitler] hopes the book will run into many editions, thus enabling him to fulfill his financial obligations and to defray the expenses incurred at the time of his trial'.

Dave with his full face tattoo. A very tattood man !
As many people will know I generally attend the local tattoo convention at Manchester and Liverpool. Too many people do 'judge by the cover' however, which is very wrong. A tat can be a fashion statement or something more.
A tattoo is a marking made by inserting indelible ink into the dermis layer of the skin to change the pigment for decorative or other reasons. Tattoos on humans are a type of decorative body modification, while tattoos on animals are most commonly used for identification or branding. Indeed the habit of women having one just above the bottom is offen referred to as a 'tramp stamp'.
The word tatoo appears to be a loan word from Polynesian 'tatau'. People have also been forcibly tattooed. A well-known example is the identification system for inmates in Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust. Tattoos have also been used for identification in other ways. For example, in the period of early contact between the Māori and Europeans, Māori chiefs sometimes drew their moko (facial tattoo) on documents in place of a signature.
Permanent makeup is the use of tattoos to enhance eyebrows, lips (liner and/or lipstick), eyes (liner), and even moles, usually with natural colors, as the designs are intended to resemble makeup.
In Japan, tattoos are strongly associated with organized crime organizations known as the yakuza, particularly full body tattoos done the traditional Japanese way (Tebori).
In the United States many prisoners and criminal gangs use distinctive tattoos to indicate facts about their criminal behavior, prison sentences, and organizational affiliation. A tear tattoo, for example, can be symbolic of murder, with each tear representing the death of a friend. At the same time, members of the U.S. military have an equally well established and longstanding history of tattooing to indicate military units, battles, kills, etc., an association which remains widespread among older Americans. Tattooing is also common in the British Armed Forces.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
Heres a track that comes up a lot on my shuffle and it cropped up this very morning.
Initially a Leeds left-wing-inspired post-punk British rock group, Scritti Politti developed into a more mainstream pop music project in the early to mid 1980s. Scritti Politti originally consisted of Green Gartside (born Paul Julian Strohmeyer) as the lead vocalist, Nial Jinks as bass player, Tom Morley as drummer, and Matthew Kay as the manager who sometimes played the keyboard.
The name 'Scritti Politti' was chosen as a homage to the Italian Marxist theorist Antonio Gramsci: The name is generally understood to refer to Gramsci's political writings (although the correct spelling in Italian would have produced 'Scritti Politici'). Gartside changed it to 'Scritti Politti' as he thought it sounded more rock and roll, like 'Tutti Frutti'.
'Skank Bloc Bologna' picked up airplay on John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show, and the band were signed to the 'Rough Trade' label under Geoff Travis in 1979,
Gartside and Jinks had gone to school together in South Wales, and Gartside met Morley at Leeds Polytechnic, a college they both attended. They played one show as 'The Against' in 1976, doing covers of Chelsea songs. Disillusioned and bored with art school, Gartside and Morley left in June 1978 and moved into a squat at 1 Carol Street in Camden Town, London. Jinks was invited to join the band. Gartside apparently taught him how to play the bass in three weeks.
Gartside recorded a demo of one of his new songs, 'The Sweetest Girl', in January 1981, and the song was included on a compilation of songs on cassette (the C81) given out with the March issue of NME. I still have it in the loft somewhere.
Success in the 1980's led to a number of LP releases and in 1988, 'Provision' contained this little gem.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5164712933 - 'The Rocker - 'Thin Lizzy' - Play this track here.
¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
A track from the late great Phil Lynott. I heard this live finishing up a set at the Manchester Apollo in 1979 I think, December time.
The band often used to finish up with this track in celebration of a guy called Ted Carroll. He had brought the band to London from Dublin in the early 70's and he ran a Saturday record stall called 'Rock On' on Golborne Road, Off Ladbroke Grove market.
Carroll was involved with early Chiswick label artists and the founders of Stiff records (motto 'If it aint Stiff, it aint worth a f**k). Thus was instrumental in producing and pressing a great many of the 70's vinyls in my loft. He never was involved in a Thin Lizzy release however, Decca and Phongram were the bands labels, with the former involved with the band releasing an album of Deep Purple covers.
Thin Lizzy's leader, Lynott was composer or co-composer of almost all their songs. He was one of the few black men to achieve commercial success in hard rock, and was certainly the first black Irishman to do so. As well as being multiracial, the band drew their members not only from both sides of the Irish border but also from both the Catholic and Protestant communities.
For a great introduction to Thin Lizzy, the live album 'Live and Dangerous' is your only option. There is some disagreement over just how much of the album is actually recorded live. Producer Tony Visconti claimed that the only parts that weren't overdubbed were the drums and the audience. However Brian Robertson has refuted this, saying that he had refused Lynott's request to re-record a guitar solo, and that the only overdubs were backing vocals and some guitar parts by Gorham. He added, 'It's just not true. The only reason we said that it was recorded all over was obviously for tax reasons... so everything that Visconti claims is boll**ks.
Listen for yourself and make your own mind up :-)

The Fender Cyclone was a series of electric guitars made by Fender. Introduced in late 1997, the Cyclone body is similarly styled to the Mustang but with a significantly different specification. The body of the Cyclone is a quarter of an inch thicker than the body of a Mustang and is made of poplar, whereas contemporary Mustang reissues were made of basswood.
The Fender Cyclone was discontinued in 2007.

The lift bridge (proper name Salford Quays Millennium footbridge) is a 95m vertical lift bridge bridge spanning the Manchester Ship Canal at the manchester Pomona dock end. The bridge, was completed in the year 2000 and links the Lowry Centre to Trafford Wharfside.
The bridge has a total lift of 18 metres and can be raised or lowered very quickly in less than three minutes.
This area is now given over now to shopping, flats, bars and the BBC northern outpost, rather than the ships of over 40 or more years ago.

The Lion Salt Works is the last remaining open pan saltworks in Cheshire, England. It closed as a works in 1986 and is now preserved as a museum. The works is situated in Marston, near Northwich surrounded by salt flashes.
The museum failed to secure funding in the restoration TV show in 2004, however In March 2008 it was announced that the Heritage Lottery Fund had made an award of £4.96m towards the £7m total cost of the restoration project. so we might be seeing it in its former glory soon.
This area was the start of industrial mining of salt and saline processing for the soda ash and other industries that have developed in the area. The site is recognised as an Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage. The pub over the road, The Salt Barge is a nice place to stop for a pint.

Nitin Sawhney is a British indian musician, producer and composer. His critically-acclaimed work combines Asian and other worldwide influences with elements of jazz and electronica and often explores themes such as multiculturalism, politics and spirituality. This is evident in the London Undersound recordings. This explores the experience of the Al-Qaeda's claimed London bombings of 7th July 2005.

The Datsuns formed in 2000 are a 1970's inspired hard rock band from Cambridge, New Zealand,. In August 2000 they released their first single, 'Super Gyration!,' on 7' vinyl only. In July 2002, after featuring several times on the greap and sadly lost John Peel's programme on the BBC Radio 1 and being hailed as 'the future of rock' by the British music press, the band signed with the V2 record label. Their self-titled debut album made a strong impression in the UK. They won the NME's 'Best Live Band' award.

More about 'The Big Issue'...
The Big Issue is a street newspaper published in eight countries
it is written by professional journalists and sold by homeless individuals. It was founded by John Bird and Gordon Roddick in September 1991. The Big Issue is one of the UK's leading social businesses and exists to offer homeless people the opportunity to earn a legitimate income, thereby helping them to reintegrate into mainstream society. It is also the world's most widely circulated street newspaper.
To become a vendor, one must be homeless or vulnerably housed or marginalised in some way. The Big Issue recognises, however, that for many people, being housed is only the first stage in getting off the streets
therefore, The Big Issue Foundation exists to support vendors in gaining control of their lives by tackling the various issues which lead to homelessness.
The Big Issue has been described as one of the most successful street newspapers worldwide, selling over 300,000 copies a week and listed as the third-favourite newspaper of young British people (age 15 to 24) in 2001.
There are 5 localised editions of the magazine sold throughout the United Kingdom and vendors buy The Big Issue for 85p[7] and sell it for £1.70. The magazine is also produced and sold in Australia, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, Japan, Namibia, Kenya, Malawi and Taiwan. All vendors receive training, sign a code of conduct] and can be identified by badges which include their photo and vendor number

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD4W - A traditional British electric milkfloat vehicle
Milk deliveries frequently occur in the morning and it is not uncommon for milkmen to deliver products other than milk such as eggs, cream, cheese, butter, yogurt or soft drinks. Originally, milk needed to be delivered to houses daily since the lack of good refrigeration meant it would quickly spoil. The near-ubiquity of refrigerators in homes in the developed world, as well as improved packaging, has decreased the need for frequent milk delivery over the past half-century and made the trade shrink in many localities sometimes to just 3 days a week and disappear totally in others. Additionally, milk delivery incurs a small cost on the price of dairy products that is increasingly difficult to justify and leaves delivered milk in a position where it is vulnerable to theft.
Because of the relatively small power output from its electric motor, a milk float travels fairly slowly, usually around 10 to 16 miles per hour (16 to 26 km/h) although some have been modified to do up to 80 mph (130 km/h). Operators often exit their vehicle before they have completely stopped to speed up deliveries
milk floats generally have sliding doors that can be left open when moving, or may have no doors at all. They are very quiet, suiting operations in residential areas during the early hours of the morning or during the night.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HF2D - Pulmicort Asthma Inhaler with box with braille markings, held by a user of this medication.
What Is Pulmicort?
Pulmicort is an inhaled steroid used to control asthma symptoms. Pulmicort, along with other inhaled steroids like Flovent, is considered first-line treatment when you need more than occasional use of a rescue inhaler for your asthma. Pulmicort can be prescribed by itself or combined with a long-acting beta agonist to prevent asthma symptoms such as:
¢Wheezing
¢Chest tightness
¢Shortness of breath
¢Chronic cough
How Does Pulmicort Work?
Pulmicort reduces inflammation in the lungs and decreases airway hyper-responsiveness. By acting directly in the lungs, your airways are also less likely to respond to an asthma trigger.
Additionally, Pulmicort's benefits result from its action on a number of different cell types involved in the pathophysiology of asthma:
¢Basophils
¢Eosinophils
¢Lymphocytes
¢Macrophages
¢Mast Cells
¢Neutrophils
The decreased inflammation, mucus production, and hyperreponsiveness leads to a decrease in your asthma symptoms. Unlike your rescue inhaler, Pulmicort controls chronic asthma symptoms and should be taken daily in order to be effective.
How Is Pulmicort Prescribed?
Pulmicort is prescribed in 2 different forms. Pulmicort Respules are an inhalation suspension delivered via a special nebulizer and are available in several different strengths. Pulmicort is also available via a dry inhaled powder that is similar to a metered dose inhaler. Generally, you will take Pulmicort daily no matter how well your asthma symptoms are controlled. If your asthma control is excellent, talk with your doctor about considering a decrease in your medication.
The active component in Pulmicort, budesonide, is also in Symbicort, combination asthma inhaler, and in Rhinocort, a nasal spray for allergies. .
