Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EPRP2H - A wide panoramic view inside the redeveloped Warrington Market shows a busy Saturday afternoon in the modern Cookhouse food hall, with customers eating, drinking and socialising at tables beneath the building's high arched roof. Independent food and drink stalls line both sides of the central seating area, while the glazed entrance and open-plan layout create a bright, contemporary atmosphere. The scene captures the market as a successful town-centre leisure destination rather than simply a traditional place to buy produce.
The current Warrington Market building opened in July 2020 as part of Warrington Borough Council's £142 million Time Square regeneration scheme. The development replaced the former market building and brought together the new market, council offices, cinema, restaurants, public space and parking in a major renewal of this part of the town centre. The purpose-built market contains around 60 business units across ground-floor and mezzanine levels, supporting independent traders selling fresh food, groceries, gifts, services and prepared meals.
At the heart of the building, the Cookhouse provides communal seating and a choice of cuisines from independent kitchens, alongside bars and evening opening on Fridays and Saturdays. This makes the venue suitable for lunch, informal dining, family visits, meetings and nightlife as well as shopping. The photograph shows strong customer footfall, mixed-age groups, relaxed weekend dining and the social role of an indoor market in helping regenerate a British town centre.
The image can illustrate retail-led regeneration, local enterprise, independent hospitality, indoor food halls urban renewal, high-street recovery, public investment modern market architecture, consumer spending, community gathering places and the changing role of traditional markets. The broad panorama records the scale of the hall, its steel roof structure, natural light, circulation space and lively mix of traders and customers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EPRNKH - Trainline digital rail booking is displayed on an iPhone resting diagonally across a printed British railway timetable. The app screen shows an outbound and return journey to Edinburgh Waverley on Tuesday 23 June, with options to download the tickets, print the eTicket or add it to Apple Wallet. A reminder not to forget the passenger's Railcard is also clearly visible. Beneath the smartphone, the traditional timetable page is headed Glasgow, Carlisle, Preston, Crewe and London, representing the principal West Coast Main Line corridor.
The image contrasts modern mobile ticketing with the dense columns, station names and departure times of a conventional printed railway timetable. It illustrates how UK passengers increasingly plan journeys, buy fares and carry travel documents through smartphone apps while older paper information remains associated with railway history and timetable research. Trainline distinguishes between eTickets, which may be supplied as a PDF and stored on a phone, and Mobile Tickets held within its app. Depending on the ticket type and route, a barcode can be scanned at a station gate or presented to railway staff for inspection.
Edinburgh Waverley is a major Scottish rail destination and is served by operators using both the East Coast and West Coast networks. The visible timetable heading connects Glasgow and Carlisle with Preston, Crewe and London, major locations on the West Coast Main Line, a major British inter-city route. The photograph is suitable for editorial coverage of digital transformation, paperless travel, rail booking technology, smartphone use, contactless passenger journeys, ticket retailing, Railcard discounts, journey planning, railway timetables, public transport, business travel and domestic tourism. It may also illustrate dependence on mobile devices, battery power and downloadable travel credentials, alongside the continuing need for passengers to carry any Railcard used to obtain a discounted fare.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ETN58J - Front view of an LNER Azuma train standing at the platform at Dundee railway station in the stock-photo/gotonysmith-Evening.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>evening. The streamlined nose of the red, white and yellow intercity train dominates the foreground, while passengers and platform lighting recede into the background beneath the station canopy. The image captures a rail scene in Dundee, Scotland, with Azuma branding visible and tactile paving adding context to the platform setting.
Dundee station on South Union Street is an important rail gateway for the city, linking Dundee with Edinburgh, Newcastle, York and London on the East Coast route, as well as other Scottish destinations. LNER's Azuma fleet is a recognisable feature of intercity travel in Britain, associated with faster journeys, modern passenger facilities and contemporary train design. The photograph is useful for illustrating long-distance public transport, rail infrastructure, sustainable travel, tourism access and the role of rail in connecting Scotland with the rest of Great Britain.
The evening conditions give the image added relevance for themes of travel safety and passenger reassurance. Platform lights are illuminated, the station environment appears clear and orderly, and a small number of travellers can be seen nearby, contributing to a sense of an active but calm station environment after daylight hours. The combination of lighting, station architecture and the prominent train frontage makes the picture suitable for stories about rail commuting, business travel, public transport confidence and later-day journeys.
This image also works well for broader themes such as East Coast Main Line services, Scottish transport infrastructure, accessible station environments and UK railway operations. Its close perspective, polished train bodywork and converging platform lines give it strong visual appeal for editorial, commercial and travel-related uses focused on intercity mobility, modern rolling stock and evening rail travel in Scotland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EW7BWY - Passengers travel north through Scotland in the Standard Class carriage of an LNER Azuma train on an evening service from Edinburgh Waverley to Aberdeen. The view looks along the modern saloon between rows of high-backed grey seats with red headrests and trim. Several tables are visible, passengers are seated throughout the coach, and a large travel bag has been placed on the overhead luggage rack. Bright linear ceiling lights illuminate the carriage while fading daylight and blurred trackside scenery can be seen through the windows.
Electronic reservation indicators above the windows show seat availability, while red seat-back notices and table fittings reflect LNER branding. The carriage has a two-plus-two seating arrangement, overhead storage, individual window blinds, power connections and onboard passenger-information equipment. The relatively quiet interior conveys the practical atmosphere of long-distance rail travel during the later part of the day.
Azuma is LNER's name for its Hitachi-built Class 800 and Class 801 intercity trains. Introduced into passenger service from 2019, the fleet replaced older InterCity 125 and InterCity 225 trains on East Coast routes. Bi-mode Class 800 units can operate using overhead electric power or diesel engines, allowing through journeys beyond fully electrified sections of the network. Class 801 trains are principally electric.
LNER operates direct services between Edinburgh Waverley and Aberdeen over the East Coast Main Line and the railway north through Fife, Dundee, Angus and north-east Scotland. The journey covers approximately 92 miles and normally takes around two and a half hours, linking the Scottish capital with Dundee and the Granite City. North of Edinburgh, trains cross the Forth Bridge before continuing along Scotland's eastern coastline.
The photograph documents contemporary British public transport, intercity passenger accommodation and evening rail travel aboard a modern Hitachi train.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJD0G8 - Landscape view from the Velvet terrace on Canal Street in Manchester's Gay Village, looking across the Rochdale Canal toward the modern Kampus development. The image brings together two sides of the street: outdoor drinkers and diners in the foreground, seated among planters, black screens and pale café chairs, and the newer residential and leisure quarter across the canal, marked by the large KAMPUS sign. Small rainbow flags line the canal railings, while warm evening light, green trees, light summer clothing and relaxed outdoor seating suggest a late spring or summer city-break atmosphere. The sky is mostly hidden by buildings and foliage, but the stock-photo/gotonysmith-Scene.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>scene has the feel of mild weather and a busy hospitality day.
This is useful editorially because it shows Canal Street as a changing urban place, not just a famous nightlife strip. Velvet represents the established LGBTQ+ hospitality identity of the Gay Village: bars, restaurants, hotel rooms, drinks terraces, Pride culture and queer city tourism. Kampus, built around the former Manchester Metropolitan University campus, represents newer city-centre living, food, drink and regeneration beside the same canal. Together they show how Manchester's queer quarter now sits within wider pressures around development, public realm, residential growth and the visitor economy.
The photograph can illustrate stories on Manchester Pride, LGBTQ+ tourism, inclusive city breaks, outdoor hospitality, canalside regeneration, city-centre apartments, daytime nightlife districts, and the relationship between long-established queer venues and new urban development. The visible mix of customers, passers-by, planters, flags, canal railings, red brick, modern cladding and waterfront seating gives the image strong stock value for travel, planning, lifestyle, equality and Manchester business features. It records a moment where identity, commerce, tourism and regeneration meet in one compact canalside scene.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EF6BHB - A high level sunset view across central Manchester looking south and south west over Deansgate, the Great Jackson Street development area and the glass residential towers of Deansgate Square, with the flatter landscape stretching away towards Trafford and the wider Greater Manchester conurbation. The photograph captures Manchester's rapidly changing skyline, where clusters of tall apartment towers, cranes, offices, older red brick buildings, railway infrastructure and former industrial streets sit side by side. Deansgate Square, formerly known as Owen Street, is a prominent group of four glazed residential skyscrapers on the southern edge of the city centre, close to Deansgate railway station and the Mancunian Way. The tallest tower rises to around 201 metres, helping to give this part of Manchester the high-rise visual character sometimes compared by commentators and local observers with Dubai-style city living. The image is useful for editorial and commercial stock uses around urban regeneration, build to rent housing, city centre apartments, skyline change, construction, property investment, northern growth, high density living, planning, affordability, placemaking, and the reshaping of post-industrial British cities. Warm low evening light catches the tower facades while grey cloud and a clear horizon create a dramatic dusk atmosphere. The view also shows how new vertical residential districts now contrast with Manchester's older commercial blocks, railway viaducts, warehouses and street grid. It can illustrate stories about Deansgate, the Southern Gateway, Great Jackson Street, Trafford views, city centre population growth, luxury flats, cranes, modern architecture, housing supply, high-rise development, and debates over whether Manchester's fast growth is creating a confident global city or a more uneven, investor-led skyline. The weather appears dry, with late-day sunlight breaking through cloud, giving the scene a reflective urban mood.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EFHREB - Elevated view looking west from the Liverpool Road and Castlefield side of Manchester towards Salford at dusk, with the city's changing skyline spread beneath a dramatic evening sky. The photograph shows a broad urban panorama of roads, railway corridors, low-rise industrial and commercial buildings, trees, apartment blocks and tall towers, including the modern high-rise development around Deansgate, Castlefield and the neighbouring Salford edge of the city centre. The warm light on the horizon and layered cloud give the scene an atmospheric late-day quality, while the street grid and transport infrastructure below emphasise Manchester's dense urban fabric. Liverpool Road is strongly associated with the city's railway and industrial history, including the former Liverpool Road station, now part of the Science and Industry Museum area, close to Castlefield's canals, warehouses and viaducts. The view works as a useful contrast between the older industrial city and the new Manchester of residential towers, regeneration, urban living, offices, hotels, transport links and expanding city-centre development. It is suitable for editorial use on Manchester regeneration, Salford city growth, city centre living, high-rise apartments, planning, transport infrastructure, post-industrial redevelopment, northern city economies, urban density, housing, architecture and skyline change. The image also has value for travel and location features, showing Manchester as a large regional city with historic infrastructure, new investment and strong visual links between Deansgate, Castlefield, Liverpool Road, Salford and the western approach to the centre. The cloudy dusk sky, soft sunset colour and high viewpoint create a strong cityscape image for stories about modern Manchester, Greater Manchester growth, urban change, development pressure, rail and road corridors, commercial districts and the continuing transformation of former industrial land into mixed-use neighbourhoods.

The photograph illustrates the first monarch portrait change on Bank of England notes in modern British money, following the issue of King Charles III banknotes on 5 June 2024. The designs remain the familiar polymer series, with the King's portrait added to existing £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes while Queen Elizabeth II notes continue to circulate alongside them. This image is useful for stories about cash access, ATMs, personal finance, household budgeting, bank branch closures, the cashless society, digital exclusion, older people and vulnerable consumers who still rely on notes and coins, and the phrase cash is king. It also works for features on UK inflation, cost of living pressure, the future of physical money, banking services in England and Wales, consumer choice, retail payments, emergency cash, financial inclusion and the social value of keeping cash available. The visible machine keypad, clear and enter buttons, slot and hand give a practical everyday banking context, while the Charles III portrait on the purple £20 note provides a clear topical link to the new reign and changing national symbols. Bank of England notes are legal tender in England and Wales, although legal tender has a narrow debt-settlement meaning and does not force shops to accept cash for every transaction. The indoor lighting is artificial and even, with no visible weather, sky or season clues, making the image suitable as a generic contemporary finance, banking and consumer rights stock photograph. The note emerging from the dispenser also has relevance for debates about free-to-use cash machines, access to banking, post office cash services, small retailers, market traders, charity donations and payment resilience when card systems fail.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4M23 - Colourful wall display of brewery beermats inside Cask at New Islington Marina on the Ancoats and New Islington border in Manchester. The tightly arranged collection includes circular, square and irregularly shaped mats advertising real ale, craft beer, stout, bitter, pale ale and India pale ale from independent breweries. Visible designs use bold typography, illustrated animals, abstract artwork, traditional crests and contemporary branding, creating a visual record of northern beer culture.
Cask is an independent canalside bar at Cotton Field Wharf, known for a broad selection of cask-conditioned ale, keg beer, cider and bottled or canned craft products. CAMRA lists the venue as serving real ale and real cider, while local guides describe a rotating range supplied through handpumps, guest taps and refrigerated cabinets. Its position beside New Islington Marina places it within an area of east Manchester transformed from former industrial land into apartments, waterside paths, restaurants and leisure businesses.
Beermats began as absorbent coasters protecting tables from condensation and spills, but they also became inexpensive advertising tools and collectable examples of commercial design. This display combines traditional pub ephemera with the colourful visual language used by newer breweries to distinguish specialist beer styles and limited releases. Names and designs associated with DEYA, Track, Marble, Manchester Union and Brew York can be seen among many other changing labels.
The photograph suits editorial themes involving CAMRA, cask ale, independent pubs, brewery marketing, graphic design, beer tourism, urban regeneration and Manchester nightlife. It shows how specialist bars support regional producers and offer drinkers a choice beyond mass-market lager. The dense arrangement of promotional mats conveys variety, experimentation and the social history of drinking while documenting a distinctive feature inside a popular Ancoats beer venue

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EFHRK0 - Street view on Deansgate and Whitworth Street West in Manchester, looking towards the changing Castlefield and Deansgate skyline with the railway bridge, older brick buildings and new glass skyscrapers rising behind. The photograph captures a sharp contrast in modern Manchester: Victorian and railway-era infrastructure in the foreground, including the arched bridge and Deansgate station environment, set against the high-rise residential development around Deansgate Square, Great Jackson Street and the wider southern edge of the city centre. The scene is useful for editorial features on Manchester regeneration, urban development, high-density living, city centre apartments, transport corridors, construction, architecture, planning, infrastructure, gentrification and the changing skyline of post-industrial cities. The older railway bridge and street-level buildings give a sense of long-established urban fabric, while the tall blue glass towers and the orange building under construction show the scale and pace of new development around Castlefield. Deansgate station is listed by National Rail at Whitworth Street West, close to Deansgate and Castlefield, while the nearby Deansgate Square cluster has become one of Manchester's best-known groups of residential skyscrapers, including towers designed by SimpsonHaugh. The clear blue sky, bright daylight and long shadows suggest fair weather and make the buildings' reflective glass and sharp vertical lines stand out strongly. This image can illustrate Manchester's boom in tall buildings, private-rented apartments, city living, transport-led development, heritage settings, railway viaducts, public realm and the meeting of old and new Manchester. It is also relevant to stories about the city's move from industrial and railway infrastructure to residential-led regeneration, with Castlefield and Deansgate acting as shorthand for growth, density, investment and architectural change in central Manchester.

The image is a strong editorial illustration of the gradual shift from fossil-fuel motoring towards lower-emission road transport, showing how oil companies and forecourt operators are adding EV infrastructure alongside conventional refuelling. Plenitude says its proprietary charging stations use certified energy backed by European guarantees of origin from 100% renewable sources as fed into the grid, making the scene especially relevant for stories about cleaner transport, energy transition, public charging networks, electric mobility, decarbonisation and the future of roadside services in Italy. The photograph is also commercially useful for articles on Sicily travel, sustainable tourism, EV adoption, charging convenience, green branding and the changing appearance of service stations as drivers move towards battery-powered vehicles. It can support wider commentary on how electric driving may reduce motorists' direct exposure to oil-price volatility linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, including Iran-related supply fears, although electricity prices and charging tariffs remain influenced by broader energy markets. The visible Plenitude branding, charger cables, marked bays and forecourt layout give the image practical documentary value for transport, energy, business and climate reporting. The clean design and empty charging spaces suggest readiness for use rather than a staged product shot, helping the image work well for news and features about consumer behaviour, charging infrastructure rollout, renewable electricity, lower tailpipe emissions, low-carbon transport and Europe's effort to cut dependence on imported oil.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EDKYN0 - Panoramic exterior view of Grappenhall Manor Care Home on Stockport Road in Grappenhall, Warrington, photographed from across the road beneath a bright but partly cloudy sky. The modern three-storey residence combines red brick, pitched tiled roofs, large windows and a prominent glazed central section, creating the appearance of a contemporary apartment development rather than an institutional building. Newly planted trees, landscaped grounds, accessible pathways and roadside parking form part of the setting, while the wide landscape composition shows the scale of the care complex and its relationship with the surrounding suburban area. Grappenhall Manor provides residential and nursing care for up to 70 people, including support for older residents, people living with dementia, adults with physical disabilities and those requiring short-term rehabilitation after a hospital stay. Accommodation is arranged across three floors, with adapted facilities and access to gardens or terraces. The home is now presented as part of the Lovett Care group, which describes its approach as combining professional care with companionship, dignity, wellbeing activities and links to the local community. The photograph is suitable for editorial themes involving elderly care, social care provision, nursing homes, dementia support, later-life housing, care-sector investment, modern care architecture and the growing demand for specialist accommodation as the population ages. It also illustrates changing expectations of care-home design, with extensive glazing, domestic-scale materials and landscaped surroundings intended to provide light, comfort and a more welcoming residential environment. The clear daylight, spring greenery and panoramic format make the building and its modern architectural features easy to identify, while the absence of identifiable residents respects the privacy of people living and working at the home

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EDKYNH - Panoramic spring view of St John Henry Newman Catholic Church on Knutsford Road in Latchford, Warrington. The modern low-rise building is photographed across the road beneath a bright blue sky, with a mature cherry tree in pink blossom providing vivid seasonal colour beside the stone, glass and metal church frontage. The wide landscape composition shows the contemporary worship space, entrance, paved forecourt, grass verge and surrounding suburban setting.
The present church opened in June 2010 and provides a home for the Catholic community of Latchford, Grappenhall and Thelwall. It was created following the joining of the former parishes of Our Lady of the Assumption and St Augustine of Canterbury, while retaining the records and heritage of both communities. The local Catholic mission has deeper roots stretching back to 1869, when worship began in premises on St James Street before a combined school and chapel opened in 1871.
The building was initially referred to simply as the new Catholic church in Latchford. It later took the name of John Henry Newman following his beatification by Pope Benedict XVI in September 2010, and the parish now uses the title Saint John Henry Newman following his canonisation in 2019. The design combines a modern church with community facilities and was intended as a flexible, welcoming space for worship, parish activities and local gatherings.
This editorial photograph is suitable for themes involving modern church architecture, Roman Catholic worship, parish life, community buildings, suburban Warrington, spring blossom, faith and local heritage. The flowering tree, clear weather and panoramic format soften the modern lines of the building and present the church as an established part of the Latchford streetscape. The image also records how a long-standing religious community has adapted through parish merger and a purpose-built twenty-first-century home

The ground was developed as Everton's replacement for Goodison Park and marks one of the most significant stadium moves in English football, relocating the club from its historic inner-city home to a major new venue beside the River Mersey. The official stadium site describes Hill Dickinson Stadium as Everton FC's new home and a year-round destination for major sport, music, entertainment, business and cultural events. The stadium was known during construction as Everton Stadium or Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium before the Hill Dickinson naming rights deal was announced. The site is important not only as a Premier League football ground, but also as a major piece of north Liverpool regeneration, dockland redevelopment and waterfront architecture. It is useful for editorial coverage of Everton FC, football finance, modern stadium design, matchday culture, corporate naming rights, sports-led regeneration, Liverpool Waters, heritage dock redevelopment, the end of the Goodison Park era and the commercial future of top-flight football. The wider project has drawn both excitement and scrutiny, combining fan hopes for a modern home with wider debate about cost, ownership, sponsorship, local economic impact, transport, dock heritage and the changing character of Liverpool's north docks. The stadium is also listed as a future UEFA Euro 2028 host venue, strengthening its value for football tourism, international sport and major event coverage. This image works well for newspapers, football magazines, architectural features, travel guides, urban regeneration reports, sponsorship stories and stock use needing a clear contemporary view of Everton's new dockside stadium

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E3P69D - Elevated view of Warrington Bus Interchange in Warrington, Cheshire, showing multiple bright yellow Warrington's Own Buses vehicles filling the modern town centre bus station, including battery electric buses and double deck vehicles in service. The image captures the scale and intensity of public transport activity at the interchange, with buses lined up at stands and moving through the station forecourt in a busy operational scene. Branding on the vehicles includes the phrase Better by Electric Bus, underlining the shift towards lower emission and zero tailpipe emission public transport in the town. This is a strong editorial and commercial image for stories about municipal transport, electric bus fleets, sustainable travel, local authority owned operators, decarbonisation of bus services, public transport investment and urban mobility in North West England. Warrington's Own Buses describes itself as community owned, and the operator states that it carries more than 6 million passengers a year, giving useful wider context to the prominence of the fleet shown here. The interchange itself sits on Winwick Street in the town centre and acts as the main hub for local bus movements, ticket sales and passenger connections. The composition works well because it shows both the architecture of the interchange and the concentration of yellow electric buses that have become visually associated with Warrington's modern bus network. With the Primark building visible in the background and several stands occupied, the photograph has strong value for transport, regeneration, local government, clean air policy, net zero transition, infrastructure and everyday commuter travel themes. It is also useful for features about rare municipally owned bus operations in England, modern bus station design, fleet electrification and changing patterns of urban transport provision in a medium sized British town.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E3P6BF - Close exterior view of Torus Housing Group offices in Warrington, Cheshire, showing the prominent Torus Warrington signage mounted on the brick facade of Bank Park House. The image focuses on the branding of one of the North West's major social housing providers, capturing the company name and Warrington location marker on a modern office building used for housing, landlord and customer-facing services. Torus is a large regional housing association and registered provider operating across parts of the North West of England, and this Warrington office represents its presence in a town with a long history of social housing management and housing services. The photograph is useful for editorial and commercial themes linked to affordable housing, social landlords, housing associations, regional regeneration, community investment, public service delivery and the built environment of Warrington. The plain upward-looking composition gives emphasis to the sign itself, making it particularly suitable for stories about housing sector organisations, office locations, mergers, branding, governance, landlord performance, tenant services and corporate identity in UK housing. The brickwork, windows and clean modern signage provide a strong documentary image of a real operational office rather than a generic stock building. This helps the picture work well for news, trade press, case studies, procurement articles and wider housing sector coverage involving Torus, housing management, social rented homes and North West England. It also has value as a location-specific image for Warrington, where Bank Park House on Kendrick Street is listed by Torus as its local office and reception site. Suitable subjects include housing provider offices, social housing administration, customer access points, housing association branding, landlord infrastructure, urban commercial buildings and the role of large regional providers in delivering affordable and supported housing services

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E9APA5 - Exterior view of Manchester Poetry Library at Manchester Metropolitan University's Grosvenor East building on Cavendish Street, just off Oxford Road in Manchester. The photograph shows the modern red and grey facade, entrance signage for Crosscanon East, and the large Manchester Poetry Library window lettering, making it a clear editorial image for literature, public libraries, creative writing, university culture and Manchester's role as a UNESCO City of Literature. Manchester Metropolitan University describes the library as a public space for anyone interested in or curious about poetry, while the university's contact details place it at the Grosvenor Building, Cavendish Street, Manchester M15 6BG. Manchester City of Literature says the library opened in 2021 as the North West's first public poetry library, with a mission to widen access to poetry and support the creation and performance of new writing from primary school level to professional publication. The image is useful for features on poetry collections, writing workshops, public engagement, spoken word, poetry readings, literary education, university libraries, arts and humanities, Manchester Writing School, book culture, community writing and the Oxford Road Corridor. The building's clean contemporary signage and campus setting link the library to the wider creative ecosystem of Manchester Metropolitan University, including theatre, writing, journalism, language, performance and cultural research. It can support articles about access to the arts, literary tourism, creative learning, small press publishing, poetry archives, events, exhibitions, open mic culture, young writers, multilingual poetry and the city's strong independent literary scene. The photograph also works for education, cultural policy, student life, visitor guides, arts funding, library provision and city branding. Its documentary street-level view is practical for stock use because it clearly identifies the venue.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EM1WJD - Panoramic sunset view across the water at Salford Quays in Salford, Greater Manchester, showing modern apartment towers, waterfront walkways and a red-painted pedestrian bridge within the regenerated former docklands. Brick paving, railings, lamp posts frame the basin, while blue sky, broken cloud and warm evening light reflect across the calm water. The composition records the changing residential skyline of one of northern England's best-known regeneration areas.
Salford Quays was created from the former Manchester Docks, which opened with the Manchester Ship Canal in 1894. The docks declined after the Second World War and closed in 1982, leaving waterside land available for redevelopment. Salford City Council acquired much of the site and promoted a transformation based on housing, offices, leisure, culture, public space and transport. The Lowry opened in 2000, followed by MediaCity in 2011, helping establish the Quays as a centre for broadcasting, digital industries, tourism and apartment living.
New residential development has introduced high-rise and medium-rise blocks around the basins, responding to demand for homes close to Manchester city centre and MediaCity employment. The evolving skyline also illustrates debates about housing density, private renting, affordability, infrastructure, public realm and the creation of sustainable neighbourhoods on former industrial land.
Salford City Council describes the Quays as one of Europe's most successful waterfront regeneration projects. Its adopted MediaCity and Quayside framework includes around 3,000 new homes, commercial space, landscaped neighbourhoods, better waterfront access and new green areas. This photograph is suitable for editorial coverage of new-build apartments, city living, brownfield redevelopment, dockland renewal, property investment, urban planning, construction, housing growth, evening cityscapes and the continuing expansion of Greater Manchester's western waterfront.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJTD - A wide-angle view of the main public entrance to the Etihad Stadium in east Manchester, photographed in bright summer daylight under a blue sky with scattered cloud. The Manchester City club crest is embedded in the forecourt, forming a strong visual focal point that reinforces the stadium's identity and sense of place.
The Etihad Stadium has been Manchester City's home since 2003 and sits at the heart of the wider Etihad Campus, a large-scale sports-led regeneration area developed on former industrial land. Originally built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the stadium was subsequently adapted for football use and has since become one of the most recognisable sporting venues in the UK.
Manchester City Football Club's recent domestic and European success has elevated the stadium to global prominence, with the surrounding campus now incorporating training facilities, community sports spaces and commercial development. The architecture and branding visible here reflect the club's modern, international profile while remaining rooted in east Manchester.
The image is well suited for editorial use covering Premier League football, elite sport infrastructure, football club identity, urban regeneration, sports branding, and the role of major stadiums in reshaping post-industrial city districts.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJTJ - A life-size statue of David Silva stands outside the Etihad Stadium in east Manchester, depicting the former Manchester City midfielder in control of a football, a pose that reflects his technical skill, balance and calm authority on the pitch. The sculpture is rendered in a perforated, stainless-steel style, giving it a contemporary appearance that aligns with the modern identity of the club and stadium.
David Silva joined Manchester City in 2010 and became a central figure in the club's transformation into a dominant force in English and European football. Widely regarded as one of the Premier League's most gifted midfielders, Silva played a key role in multiple league titles, domestic cups and the establishment of Manchester City as a global football brand. His vision, passing and consistency earned him lasting recognition among supporters and commentators alike.
The statue forms part of a growing collection of public artworks around the Etihad Campus that celebrate club legends and reinforce Manchester City's sense of identity, continuity and success. Its location in east Manchester also reflects the wider regeneration of the area, where sport-led investment has reshaped former industrial land into a major sporting, residential and leisure district.
Photographed in summer daylight under bright but diffused conditions, the image is well suited for editorial use covering football heritage, Premier League history, public art, sporting commemoration, urban regeneration and Manchester's contemporary sporting landscape.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJX9 - large, brightly coloured cricket mural in Manchester city centre, created to promote The Hundred and Manchester Originals, the city's team in the short-format cricket competition. The wall painting uses bold blue branding, the word SIMPLES, Compare the Market meerkat characters, cricket bats, balls and larger-than-life player portraits to turn a city wall into sports advertising and public street art. Parked cars, brick buildings and a patchy blue sky give the picture useful urban context for editorial use around Manchester and cricket promotion.
The mural is especially useful because it visually links men's and women's cricket together rather than treating them as separate stories. The Hundred was launched as a 100-ball competition with men's and women's teams competing under the same city brands, and Manchester Originals are part of that attempt to attract younger, family and more diverse audiences into cricket. Reporting around the 2025 unveiling placed the mural in Shudehill and described Manchester Originals stars Jos Buttler and Deandra Dottin attending alongside young cricketers from Chance to Shine, with Compare the Market's meerkats included. The mixture of elite players, junior participants, commercial branding and playful cartoon characters makes the image suitable for stories about grassroots sport, inclusive cricket, women's sport, children's participation, urban cricket and sports marketing.
For image buyers, the photograph has strong editorial and SEO value as a Manchester street scene, a public sports mural, a cricket culture image and an example of branded city-centre advertising. It could illustrate features on The Hundred, Manchester Originals, Lancashire cricket, equality in sport, family sports entertainment, summer cricket campaigns, sports sponsorship, outdoor media, youth engagement and how modern sport uses murals and public spaces to reach people beyond traditional stadium settings.

The photograph was taken in daylight under clear conditions, creating a bright, open atmosphere that reflects a busy and positive city-centre retail environment.
Manchester Arndale is one of the UK's largest inner-city shopping centres and plays a central role in the economic and social life of the city centre. Originally developed in the 1970s, the complex was extensively rebuilt and redesigned following damage sustained during the 1996 IRA bombing, an event that reshaped both the physical fabric and future direction of central Manchester.
The modern Arndale, characterised by glass façades and open sightlines, was designed to reconnect retail space with surrounding streets and public squares, including Exchange Square. From this vantage point, historic buildings such as Manchester Cathedral sit alongside contemporary commercial architecture, illustrating the layered development of the city.
The presence of shoppers moving through the space reflects the recovery and resilience of Manchester's retail core, as well as the continued importance of physical city-centre shopping in an era of online retail. The image is well suited for editorial use covering urban regeneration, retail economics, consumer behaviour, city-centre vitality and the evolving identity of modern British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCK21 - An elevated pedestrian walkway at Castlefield, Manchester, providing a direct connection between the Metrolink tram network and National Rail services at Deansgate Station. The image was taken on a warm summer evening, with clear blue skies and strong, low-angle sunlight creating a calm, open atmosphere across the city centre.
Castlefield is widely regarded as the birthplace of the industrial city, home to some of the world's earliest canals, railway infrastructure and surviving Victorian warehouses. Deansgate Station itself, formerly known as Knott Mill, has served rail passengers since the nineteenth century and remains an important gateway between Manchester's historic industrial core and its modern city centre.
The steel-framed walkway represents a contemporary layer in this long transport history, designed to support sustainable urban movement and seamless interchange between tram, rail and pedestrian routes. From the bridge, the view opens towards Manchester's rapidly expanding skyline, where clusters of glass and steel residential towers now dominate the horizon, reflecting the city's shift towards high-density urban living.
The contrast between the heavy industrial heritage of Castlefield, the red-brick railway buildings below, and the modern skyscrapers beyond encapsulates Manchester's continuing evolution. In summer conditions such as these, the walkway functions not only as vital infrastructure but also as a vantage point over a city shaped by transport, regeneration and reinvention. The image is well suited to editorial use covering urban development, public transport integration, regeneration, sustainable mobility and the lived experience of contemporary British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCK2M - A large yellow Ainscough mobile crane dominates Deansgate in Manchester city centre during a temporary road closure required for major lifting operations. The scene is photographed in summer 2025 under clear blue skies, strong daylight and dry conditions, typical of hot summer weather in the city.
Behind the crane rises the Beetham Tower, one of Manchester's most recognisable skyscrapers, housing the Hilton Manchester Deansgate hotel. The contrast between heavy construction machinery at street level and the sleek glass tower above highlights the scale and complexity of maintaining, adapting and developing dense urban environments.
Such operations frequently require full road closures and extensive traffic management in Manchester's core, reflecting the ongoing regeneration and vertical growth of the city. The image is well suited for editorial use covering urban development, construction logistics, infrastructure disruption, city-centre regeneration, and the practical realities of maintaining modern high-rise buildings within historic street networks.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCK2R - A low-angle view of the City Road Inn, a traditional Manchester public house, photographed against the backdrop of the Hilton Manchester Deansgate, housed within the Beetham Tower, one of the city's most prominent modern skyscrapers. The juxtaposition emphasises the dramatic contrast between older red-brick pub architecture and the sleek glass and steel of twenty-first-century urban development.
The image was taken in daylight under clear blue skies, suggesting fair weather conditions typical of spring or summer in Manchester. Bright natural light enhances the visual separation between the warm tones and textures of the historic pub frontage and the cool, reflective surfaces of the modern tower behind.
This scene encapsulates Manchester's rapid transformation over recent decades, where long-established neighbourhood pubs coexist alongside large-scale regeneration, luxury hotels and high-rise residential and commercial buildings. The photograph is well suited for editorial use illustrating urban change, regeneration, architectural contrast, hospitality heritage, and the evolving identity of post-industrial British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8PTXH - Visitors walk beside the Escapade Silverstone trackside residences at Silverstone Circuit, passing a row of angular contemporary apartments with projecting balconies overlooking the famous motor racing venue. The image shows the distinctive design-led accommodation built into the circuit environment, where motorsport fans can stay close to the track and view racing action from private balconies and hospitality spaces. Escapade Silverstone describes itself as being in the heart of Silverstone and offers one to four-bedroom residences, with trackside options marketed as giving front-row access to the Grand Prix circuit. Its own material says some residences provide views of nine corners and two high-speed straights, while separate Escapade information describes the development as 60 individual residences with a clubhouse, restaurant, bar, gym, pool, sauna and treatment rooms. This photograph is commercially useful for stories about Formula 1, the British Grand Prix, Silverstone hospitality, motorsport tourism, luxury accommodation, race weekend stays, leisure property, sports venue development and the changing visitor economy around major circuits. The walking spectators, bright summer sky, trackside path, modern cladding, glass balconies and repeating architectural forms create a strong editorial image of high-end motorsport accommodation rather than a conventional hotel frontage. It can also illustrate wider themes including experience-led travel, premium event hospitality, sports business, trackside real estate, architectural design at sports venues, destination tourism and how major sporting sites are expanding beyond race-day seating into year-round leisure, dining and overnight stays. The image has particular value for coverage of Silverstone as the home of British motorsport and a major Northamptonshire visitor attraction, showing how spectators, guests and accommodation now sit directly alongside the racing circuit environment.

The photograph shows the landmark modern opera building beside the harbour, with its vast cantilevered roof, curved glass frontage, pale stone side walls, waterside quays, mooring pontoons and reflections across the dark harbour water. Designed by Danish architect Henning Larsen, the opera house is one of Copenhagen's most recognisable contemporary cultural buildings and forms part of the city's dramatic inner harbour townscape. The Royal Danish Opera House opened in 2005 and stands across the water from the historic centre, on an axis associated with Amalienborg and the Marble Church, giving the building a deliberately prominent civic and ceremonial setting. The image is useful for editorial features on Copenhagen tourism, Danish architecture, Scandinavian design, waterfront regeneration, opera, ballet, theatre, cultural venues, Nordic city breaks, public buildings and modern European landmarks. The wide roof plane, glazed foyer and harbour position make the building highly recognisable, especially from boat tours, harbour buses and waterside walks. The scene also suits articles about Copenhagen's transformation of former harbour and naval areas into public, cultural and residential districts, with Holmen now associated with arts institutions, architecture, creative education and waterside living. The mixed light, blue sky, darker cloud and reflective water create a strong travel and architecture image, balancing clean modern design with a slightly dramatic Nordic atmosphere. The photograph can be used for coverage of Danish cultural life, Copenhagen sightseeing, contemporary opera houses, Henning Larsen architecture, performing arts funding, harbour city planning and the wider appeal of Copenhagen as a compact capital where historic royal vistas and modern waterfront buildings sit close together.

The image captures the blue hour transition from daylight to evening, with cool sky tones, reflective glass and warm internal lighting giving the building a modern urban feel. Union Square is a major shopping, dining and leisure destination in Aberdeen, located at Guild Square with the central railway and bus stations close by, making it a prominent gateway for shoppers, commuters, tourists and visitors arriving in the Granite City. This documentary exterior photograph can illustrate Scottish retail, city centre regeneration, rail travel, transport interchange design, shopping centre architecture, evening shopping, urban mobility and the relationship between public transport and commercial development. The glass facade and bright internal retail lighting give a clear sense of contemporary mixed-use city architecture, while the people entering and leaving the building add everyday scale and movement. The photograph may be useful for editorial features on Aberdeen city centre, North East Scotland travel, retail property, leisure destinations, transport hubs, public realm planning, rail-linked shopping centres, shopping habits, high street change, hospitality, cinema and restaurant footfall, tourism, local economy and post-work evening activity. The dusk conditions suggest calm weather and a dry paved foreground, with no obvious rain or snow visible, while the deepening blue sky helps place the scene at twilight rather than full night. As an image of a station-linked shopping centre, it also has value for stories about urban connectivity, commuter convenience, regional transport access, retail-led regeneration and the continuing role of city centre destinations in Scotland's changing commercial landscape.

The image shows the striking red and black redevelopment beside the older rail complex, giving a strong editorial view of everyday public transport, urban regeneration and evening travel in the West Midlands. Coventry station is a major city railway gateway on the West Coast Main Line, used by commuters, students, leisure travellers and visitors moving between London, Birmingham, the wider Midlands and other UK destinations. The reflective paving, grey winter sky, umbrellas, coats and glowing interior lights create a useful atmospheric stock image for rail travel, station access, public realm design, city centre connectivity, sustainable transport, commuting, transport infrastructure and railway investment. Visible passengers, bollards, planters, signage, glass frontage and the station forecourt help place the scene in a real, working urban environment rather than a generic architectural view. The photograph can illustrate stories about Coventry's transport links, railway modernisation, station redevelopment, passenger experience, public transport interchange, city centre regeneration, evening commuting, wet weather travel and investment around station districts. The red framed building and illuminated windows also make the image suitable for articles on contemporary station architecture, post-industrial city renewal, Midlands economic development, rail accessibility and the role of well-connected stations in supporting tourism, employment and university travel. The dusk timing gives extra commercial value for features needing a moody but recognisable British railway image, with enough people present to show scale, movement and daily use without making the scene feel overcrowded.

The image shows diners, families and groups using the terrace, with parasols, planters, black branded barriers and the large Warrington Market signage visible above the entrance. It is a strong editorial stock image for stories about town centre regeneration, independent food traders, food halls, market culture, hospitality, outdoor dining, summer leisure, evening economy and the changing use of traditional retail spaces. Warrington Market's newer purpose-built building sits between Bridge Street and Time Square, combining a traditional indoor market with a contemporary food and drink offer. The Cookhouse area brings together street-food style kitchens and bars, giving the town centre a social dining space for lunches, meals, weekend visits and informal nights out. The crowded terrace suggests strong footfall and a lively atmosphere, with people eating and drinking in bright daylight under a glazed canopy. Visible details such as the branded Cookhouse barrier, outdoor chairs, planting, parasols and people passing through the wider public space place the scene firmly in a busy urban leisure setting. The photograph is useful for coverage of hospitality recovery, local economic development, high street reinvention, place-making, public realm, independent traders, market halls, casual dining and warm-weather town centre activity in North West England. It can also illustrate how councils and town centres have tried to broaden markets beyond traditional stalls by adding food courts, bars, events, covered terraces and family-friendly dining. The light, clothing and full terrace indicate a mild or warm spring or summer day, with the image carrying an upbeat documentary feel of Warrington town centre being used as a social destination rather than just a shopping area.

For Alamy and picture-library discovery, useful alternative wording includes Leeds stock photo, documentary image, editorial photography, local economy, public realm, real-world evidence, everyday Britain, regional identity, signage, street scene, visitor economy, urban change and contemporary social history.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJCCBM - Taken on 19 Aug 2023, this photograph shows Modern conical Roman Catholic, Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral 1967, Mount Pleasant, , Merseyside, England, UK, L3 5TQ. The location is Mount Pleasant, Liverpool, Merseyside, England, UK, L3 5TQ. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains architectural or decorative detail with strong colour, lettering and religious, civic or commemorative symbolism. Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King was consecrated in 1967 to designs by Frederick Gibberd, and its centralised modernist form has become one of the city's most distinctive landmarks. Its national importance was underlined when the cathedral's listed status was upgraded to Grade I in 2025, strengthening the image's relevance for architecture, faith and heritage features. It can support articles on architecture, faith, heritage conservation, public art, tourism, local identity and the way historic or modern buildings remain active in daily city life. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include religion, religious, conical, Mount Pleasant, Metropolitan Cathedral, Roman Catholic, stained, glass, panel, Liverpool, Merseyside, history, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG8YHH - St Mary's Church is in Church End in the village of Hale, Halton, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.[1] It is an active Anglican church in the deanery of Widnes, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the diocese of Liverpool.
The tower dates from the 14th century and the rest of the church from 1758 to 1759, replacing an earlier church on the site. Restorations were carried out in 1874, when a northwest vestry was added, and 1903. In October 1977, the church was the victim of an arson attack, leaving only the walls and the tower still standing. As a result of the fire there is nothing remaining of the restorations other than the vestry walls. Following the fire, the foundations of a narrower, timber-framed church were discovered. The roof and interior of the church were replaced by the architects Buxeby and Evans in 197980.
St Mary's is built in red sandstone ashlar with a slate roof. Its plan is a rectangle in five bays with a west tower, a northwest vestry, a northeast gabled projecting chapel, and a south porch. The tower is square with corner buttresses and a crenellated parapet. It has a west door with a window above it. At the bell stage are two-light louvred belfry windows on all sides. The windows on each side of the body of the church are round-headed. The east window is Venetian in style, glazed in large squares, with a cherub carved in the keystone
The roof, dating from 1979 to 1980, is in varnished chestnut. It is panelled in five compartments, and heavily moulded. The west organ gallery, standing on Tuscan columns, is a replica of that destroyed in the fire. The furniture has been acquired from a variety of sources. The font, which consists of a bowl carved with cherubs, dates from the 18th century and spent a century in a garden. The oak pulpit dating from the 17th century stands on Tuscan columns
it came from York Minster.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFEPY0 - This image shows a modern UK Government office building in Cardiff city centre, part of the UK Government Hub in Wales. The bilingual signage reading Llywodraeth y DU and UK Government reflects statutory Welsh language requirements and the presence of central government departments operating in Wales.
The building features a contemporary glass-and-stone facade with strong vertical lines, large windows, and a transparent ground-floor entrance, characteristic of recent civic and commercial developments in Cardiff's regenerated city-centre districts. The architectural style emphasises openness, accessibility, and modern public-sector working environments.
The photograph appears to have been taken during daylight hours on a working day, with people visible entering or passing the building, reinforcing its role as an active government workplace. The urban surroundings and street furniture place the building firmly within Cardiff's central business and administrative area.
UK Government hubs such as this accommodate multiple departments under one roof, supporting civil service functions while contributing to city-centre regeneration and the local economy. The image documents the physical presence of UK central government in Wales and the integration of bilingual identity within the built environment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFEPY8 - This image shows a purple neon sign displaying the words Escape Rooms Cardiff , photographed against a dark background that accentuates the vivid glow of the illuminated lettering. The sign uses bold, stylised typography and continuous neon-style tubing, creating a strong visual identity associated with modern leisure and entertainment venues.
The lighting suggests an indoor or low-light environment, likely within or near the entrance of an escape room attraction. The rich purple hue stands out sharply against the surrounding darkness, producing a high-contrast, contemporary look that reflects the immersive and playful nature of escape room experiences.
Escape rooms have become a popular form of urban entertainment across UK cities, offering interactive puzzle-solving activities for groups, tourists, and corporate team-building. The sign represents this growing leisure sector within Cardiff's city-centre entertainment economy.
The photograph captures the use of neon and LED lighting as a branding tool in modern hospitality and leisure spaces, combining visual impact with a sense of nighttime energy and experiential appeal.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ3CM - This photograph shows the BBC Cymru Wales headquarters building at Central Square in Cardiff city centre, home to the national broadcaster for Wales. The modern structure features a combination of pale stone cladding and large vertical glass panels, with prominent BBC Cymru Wales signage clearly visible on the upper facade. The building forms a key part of Cardiff's Central Square regeneration area, adjacent to Cardiff Central railway station.
The image was taken after rainfall, with wet road surfaces and pavements creating reflective textures across the foreground. Traffic lights glow against the damp streets, while a small number of pedestrians move through the scene, dressed for cool, unsettled weather. The sky is overcast with patches of lighter cloud, suggesting changeable conditions typical of the Welsh climate.
BBC Cymru Wales operates television, radio, and digital services in both Welsh and English, and the Central Square development represents a significant investment in modern broadcasting infrastructure and urban renewal. The surrounding streetscape, street furniture, and planting reinforce the contemporary civic character of the area.
The photograph captures both the architectural presence of a major public service broadcaster and the everyday atmosphere of a working city following rain, blending modern media infrastructure with the rhythms of urban life in Cardiff.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGJ40 - This image shows the exterior of Radio Northwich, a community radio station based in Northwich, Cheshire. The station operates as a local, non-commercial broadcaster, providing a mix of music, local news, interviews, and community-focused programming aimed at serving residents of Northwich and the surrounding area.
Radio Northwich broadcasts on FM locally and also streams online, reflecting the hybrid nature of modern community radio in the UK. Programming typically includes locally produced shows, specialist music output, and coverage of local events, charities, and voluntary groups, with a strong emphasis on community participation and volunteering.
The station is independently run and community-owned, operating on a not-for-profit basis rather than as part of a national commercial radio network. Community radio stations such as Radio Northwich play an important role in local media ecosystems, particularly as traditional local newspapers and commercial radio services have declined.
The photograph appears to have been taken in late-day light, with warm reflections visible in the glass frontage of the building. The modern exterior places the station firmly within Northwich town centre, highlighting the visibility and accessibility of community media within everyday urban life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAJ378 - Manchester Piccadilly is the principal railway station in Manchester, England. Opened as Store Street in 1842, it was renamed Manchester London Road in 1847 and became Manchester Piccadilly in 1960. Located to the south-east of Manchester city centre, it hosts long-distance intercity and cross-country services to national destinations including London, Birmingham, Nottingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth, Reading, Southampton and Bournemouth
regional services to destinations in Northern England including Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle and York
and local commuter services around Greater Manchester. It is one of 19 major stations managed by Network Rail. The station has 14 platforms: 12 terminal and two through platforms (numbers 13 and 14). Piccadilly is also a major interchange with the Metrolink light rail system with two tram platforms in its undercroft.
Piccadilly is the busiest station in the Manchester station group with over 30 million passenger entries and exits between April 2019 and March 2020
A major redevelopment of the station and surrounding area has been proposed to complement the HS2 proposals involving the construction of a canopy over the HS2 platforms, the creation of a new entrance, and office, retail and residential development. Designs indicate that the derelict Mayfield Station and the Gateway House office block will be demolished. The plans were approved by the Government in November 2016
Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) proposals include the construction of new platforms under Piccadilly station and the proposed HS2 platforms. The 2016 'Manchester Piccadilly Options Assessment' by the National Infrastructure Commission stated: Addition of Northern Powerhouse Rail and Station to the Manchester Piccadilly system will be the last step of the process of transforming the station in to a transport super hub. The NPR station and its construction will need to be considered throughout the design and implementation

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RBXAPE - Waterloo station also known as London Waterloo, is a central London terminus on the National Rail network in the United Kingdom, in the Waterloo area of the London Borough of Lambeth. It is connected to a London Underground station of the same name and is adjacent to Waterloo East station on the South Eastern Main Line. The station is the terminus of the South West Main Line to Weymouth via Southampton, the West of England main line to Exeter via Salisbury, the Portsmouth Direct line to Portsmouth Harbour which connects with ferry services to the Isle of Wight, and several commuter services around west and south-west London, Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire.
The station was opened in 1848 by the London and South Western Railway, and it replaced the earlier Nine Elms as it was closer to the West End. It was never designed to be a terminus, as the original intention was to continue the line towards the City of London, and consequently the station developed in a haphazard fashion, leading to difficulty finding the correct platform. The station was rebuilt in the early 20th century, opening in 1922, and included the Victory Arch over the main entrance, which commemorated World War I. Waterloo was the last London terminus to provide steam-powered services, which ended in 1967. The station was the London terminus for Eurostar international trains from 1994 until 2007, when they were transferred to St. Pancras.
Waterloo is the busiest railway station in the UK, handling 41 million passengers in the year to March 2022. It is also the UK's largest station in terms of floor space and has the greatest number of platforms.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64KXK - The MV Royal Iris of the Mersey is a Mersey Ferry in operation on the River Mersey, England. From launch in Devon in 1959 until a major refurbishment in 2001, she was named MV Mountwood.
MV Mountwood
The Mountwood was the slightly older sister ship of the MV Woodchurch. Both of the ferries were built for the Corporation of Birkenhead to replace the existing fleet of 1930s steamers. The designs of the two new vessels were loosely based on the ferries Leasowe and Egremont of the Wallasey Corporation
they were designed by the same company, Graham and Woolnough, and were built at the same shipyard, Messrs. Philip and Sons Ltd. of Dartmouth. Mountwood was launched by Mrs Hugh Platt on 6 July 1959 into the River Dart, and after being fitted out was delivered to the Mersey in 1960. She was named after an overspill post-war housing development of Birkenhead.
The Mountwood and her identical sister Woodchurch originally had bright orange funnels with a black base and black soot buffer. On the main deck, there was a forward, heated shelter and also a main saloon, aft of this was the toilets and machine space. Below was a saloon bar. On the top deck was a large open promenade and a forward shelter beneath the bridge, although this shelter was open beneath the bridge so it was often breezy and cold. They had a main central wheelhouse and two side cabs, and power came from two medium speed Crossley 8-cylinder diesel engines.
In 2001, the Mountwood was withdrawn and taken to Birkenhead's former Cammell Laird shipyard (which became owned by A&P), and then to Clarence graving docks, where she was stripped of her fittings and parts of her superstructure were removed and rebuilt. Unfortunately the ferry remained dormant for some time due to problems at the shipyard. She was then re-engined and rebuilt. Noticeable changes were the addition of a new, angle fronted, large wheelhouse and bridge deck, plus her funnel, which was reinstated after the refit, was moved further back

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MGWK82 - New Hall Place (also known as The Capital and the Royal & SunAlliance Building) is a 13-storey brutalist style office complex in the commercial district of Liverpool, England. Due to its rough, beige exterior and proximity to the waterfront, it is also known by the local nickname 'The Sandcastle'.
History
It was developed by Royal Insurance as their head office building. As well as office space the building comprised a staff car park in the underground floors, a garage for the company chauffeur driven cars and staff facilities on the first floor including staff restaurant, sports hall, gymnasium and subsidised bar.
Following the 1990s merger of Royal Insurance with SunAlliance to form Royal & SunAlliance (RSA), numerous job losses followed largely through outsourcing and off shoring deals. RSA staff numbers based in the building reduced from over 3000 to around 1200. In 2006 RSA sold the building to George Downing and leased back the parts of the building still used by RSA. This allowed other tenants to move in such as the UK Border Agency. Downing renamed the building from New Hall Place to The Capital.
From 2016 The Capital is now owned by an American company Trinistar. New management took over in early 2016 from Lambert Smith Hampton To MJ MAPP LTD.

The museum was an initiative of the Merseyside Development Corporation. Tate Liverpool was created to display work from the Tate Collection which comprises the national collection of British art from the year 1500 to the present day, and international modern art. The gallery also has a programme of temporary exhibitions. Until 2003, Tate Liverpool was the largest gallery of modern and contemporary art in the UK outside London.
History
Housed in a converted warehouse within the Albert Dock on Liverpool's waterfront, the gallery was opened on 24 May 1988 by Prince Charles, an event covered by BBC Two television. The original conversion was done by James Stirling but the building was given a major refurbishment in 1998 to create additional gallery space.
In 2007, the foyer area was redesigned by architects Arca to create an updated appearance and better proportions, as well as to improve visitor handling. The gallery cafe was also redesigned by Peter Blake and Liverpool-based architects, Architectural Emporium. The centrepiece of the space is a new timber desk with an undulating orange fascia, which links to the retained colour scheme of the original conversion work by Stirling. A colour-changing wall acts as a backdrop to the simplified brick volume, visible from across Albert Dock. Behind the scenes, Arca also made alterations to the hospitality, cloakroom, events and education areas.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59WXF - This image shows the interior of a café in York featuring individual work pods, designed to provide quiet, semi-private spaces for customers working remotely or studying. The pods are constructed with simple, modern materials including plywood panels and muted painted surfaces, reflecting contemporary café and coworking design trends.
Visible signage lists a range of teas and drinks, reinforcing the dual purpose of the space as both a traditional coffee shop and a functional workspace. The numbered pods indicate structured seating, allowing customers to work individually while remaining within a social café environment.
Café work pods have become increasingly common in UK cities, particularly following shifts toward remote and hybrid working. They cater to freelancers, students, digital nomads, and professionals seeking an alternative to home working or formal offices.
Photographed to show layout, materials, and signage, the image documents the evolving role of cafés as multifunctional spaces supporting modern work habits. It is well suited for editorial use covering remote working, urban lifestyle, modern café culture, coworking trends, and contemporary interior design in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JYTBGB - Manchester Cathedral, formally the Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys and St George, in Manchester, England, is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Manchester, seat of the Bishop of Manchester and the city's parish church. It is on Victoria Street in Manchester city centre and is a grade I listed building.
The former parish church was rebuilt in the Perpendicular Gothic style in the years following the foundation of the collegiate body in 1421. Then at the end of the 15th century, James Stanley II (warden 14851506 and later Bishop of Ely 15061515) was responsible for rebuilding the nave and collegiate choir with high clerestory windows
also commissioning the late-medieval wooden internal furnishings, including the pulpitum, choir stalls and the nave roof supported by angels with gilded instruments. The collegiate church became the cathedral of the new Diocese of Manchester in 1847. It was extensively refaced, restored and extended in the Victorian period, and again following bomb damage during World War II. It is one of fifteen Grade I listed buildings in Manchester.
Manchester Arndale (one of a number of shopping centres in the UK by the same developers, also known simply as the Arndale Centre or the Arndale) is a large shopping centre in Manchester, England. It was constructed in phases between 1972 and 1979, at a cost of £100 million. Manchester Arndale is the largest of the chain of Arndale Centres built across the UK in the 1960s and 1970s. It was redeveloped after the 1996 Manchester bombing.
Built in 1815 as the Old Church Tavern the Mitre Hotel clearly derives its name from its neighbour the Manchester Cathedral. The Mitre has survived two potentially disasterous bombings. The first was just before Christmas in 1940 when Manchester suffered its worst blitz of the Second World War.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRR0A3 - The church was founded in the 1950s as a home worship group in the rapidly expanding village as the village became a residence area to workers in the newly established Atomic Energy industry at Risley by Methodists from the nearby village of Glazebury. The church is part of the Leigh and Hindley Circuit
The church sanctuary is somewhat exceptional in being of a triangular shape (Δ) much like the sweets called Toblerone and being the first modern church since the English reformation in Culcheth. The older village area under its squire was recusant, and thus the Church of England church serving the village was outside the village at Newchurch. The local Roman Catholic church is also outside the village. Culcheth Methodist Church is now home to the old bell from Culcheth Hall chapel, the squire's private Catholic chapel, which has passed through the other churches to Culcheth Methodist Church for safekeeping, and is in regular use as it is rung to announce services and continuation of worship in many forms in the village.
For safety and proof of theft, all metal and equipment within the church is marked with Smartwater for forensic tracing. The bell is no longer hung in the church, but has disappeared in the refurbishment to enlarge the foyer, and the inability of Methodist Organisation to accept risk of it falling or hurting someone if they bumped into it

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPB8MW - The sculpture is by John O'Connor, he studied at the Sculpture Academy in London for four years, before going on to teach sculpture, moulding and casting.
The piece is cast in bronze resin and is called Beyond Limitations. It was placed in the Lady Arbour Clouster Gardens in 2013. . On the picturesque estuary border between Essex and Suffolk there is a hidden artist's studio. It remains a secret to the general public but the studio receives commissions from across the globe. A true asset to the local community and the international art scene alike.
This secret is sculptor John O'Connor. He works prolifically in his studio at Manningtree, a world away from the hustle and bustle of any art capital. He has as much talent and focus as any artist you would expect to find working in a major city and has been producing figurative contemporary sculpture for the last 18 years.
John's work has become increasingly popular and much sought after, in fact, business is booming. Amidst the glamour of celebrities and the household names of the garden design world, John was once again exhibiting his art works at the recent RHS Chelsea Flower Show. He was delighted to have again been working in collaboration with award winning garden designer James Basson. This year Basson designed the M&G show garden.
This summer he exhibited at two other RHS shows, Chatsworth House (June 711), and Hampton Court Flower Show (July 39).
Collaborating with John on the RHS shows will be various local companies including Dedham Vale Vineyards who will be sponsoring the private view with their delicious sparkling English Brut, and Essex based stonemasons, Wood For Stone, who will be providing the stone for this years exhibit. This years planting will also be provided by the Oxford based Water Perry Gardens. John also has various other prominent shows planned for this year.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JKBPJY - Shakespeare's Globe is a reconstruction of the Globe Theatre, an Elizabethan playhouse for which William Shakespeare wrote his plays, in the London Borough of Southwark, on the south bank of the River Thames. The original theatre was built in 1599, destroyed by the fire in 1613, rebuilt in 1614, and then demolished in 1644. The modern Globe Theatre is an academic approximation based on available evidence of the 1599 and 1614 buildings. It is considered quite realistic, though modern safety requirements mean that it accommodates only 1,400 spectators compared to the original theatre's 3,000.
The modern Shakespeare's Globe was founded by the actor and director Sam Wanamaker, and built about 230 metres (750 ft) from the site of the original theatre in the historic open-air style. It opened to the public in 1997, with a production of Henry V. The site also includes the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, an indoor theatre which opened in January 2014. This is a smaller, candle-lit space based on historic plans for an indoor playhouse of Jacobean era London (possibly Blackfriars Theatre). The Sackler Studios, an educational and rehearsal studio complex, is situated just around the corner from the main site.
Michelle Terry currently serves as artistic director. She is the second actor-manager in charge of the organisation, following Mark Rylance, the founding artistic director.
The building itself is constructed entirely of English oak, with mortise and tenon joints and is, in this sense, an authentic 16th-century timber-framed building as no structural steel was used. The seats are simple benches (though cushions can be hired for performances) and the Globe has the first and only thatched roof permitted in London since the Great Fire of 1666. The modern thatch is well protected by fire retardants, and sprinklers on the roof ensure further protection against fire

Ticket gates have been in operation at the station since 2016.
The railway station was originally named Bolton Trinity Street to differentiate it from nearby Bolton Great Moor Street station which closed in 1954. The station was also known as Bridgeman Street Station and Bradford Square Station.
From the railway station, there are frequent services to Manchester Victoria, Manchester Piccadilly, Clitheroe via Blackburn, Wigan North Western, and Preston. Services operating to Victoria and Piccadilly operate through and terminate at other regional stations, such as Manchester Airport and Stalybridge. There is 1 train per weekday from Southport to Leeds. There is no return service.
The entrance and ticket office are at street level, at which there is a footbridge to the bus station and a taxi rank. A walkway leads to the platforms which are in a cutting. The main island platform has a buffet. The original main station building was demolished in the 1980s, but the Victorian buildings survive on the platforms. The clock tower was dismantled and rebuilt next to the new station

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D8D633 - In the 1990s several surveys were undertaken at St Mary's church, highlighting areas of structural instability and poor maintenance. The congregation had also fallen to around 400. The bishop decided to merge the parish with that of St Augustine
that parish had been erected in 1929 to cater for new residential areas in Westy, but the church had been closed and demolished in 2005. A new church would be built to serve the new parish and old St Mary's would be demolished. However, the old church was listed in 2005, and its future remains unresolved.
The new church was built at Latchford, on a site on Knutsford Road equidistant between the two former parish churches. In June 2008 the first designs, by David Horne of Hulme Upright Manning, were displayed, and the comments of the community carefully considered in the final design and decoration of the church. The new church opened in 2010, and may be the first newly-built Catholic church to be dedicated to Blessed John Henry Newman - More at https://taking-stock.org.uk/building/blessed-john-henry-newman-latchford/

One of the 1980s most recognisable pieces of architecture, the Lloyd's building demonstrates many of the key traits of the high-tech architecture style that emerged in the UK in the late 1960s.
The building, which was built as the headquarters of Lloyd's of London one of the world's largest insurance firms is distinguished by its radical inside-out aesthetic that sees all its building services banished to its exterior in order to create uninterrupted spaces inside.
This is similar to the Centre Pompidou, which Rogers completed with Renzo Piano in the late 1970s, and has equally uncluttered and highly flexible internal spaces.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGRG - Stockport is a large, major town in Greater Manchester, England, 7 miles (11 km) south-east of Manchester city centre, where the River Goyt and Tame merge to create the River Mersey, and the largest in the metropolitan borough of the same name.
Historically, most of the town was in Cheshire, but the area to the north of the Mersey was in Lancashire. Stockport in the 16th century was a small town entirely on the south bank of the Mersey, and known for the cultivation of hemp and manufacture of rope. In the 18th century the town had one of the first mechanised silk factories in the British Isles. However, Stockport's predominant industries of the 19th century were the cotton and allied industries. Stockport was also at the centre of the country's hatting industry, which by 1884 was exporting more than six million hats a year
the last hat works in Stockport closed in 1997.
Dominating the western approaches to the town is the Stockport Viaduct. Built in 1840, the viaduct's 27 brick arches carry the mainline railways from Manchester to Birmingham and London over the River Mersey. This structure featured as the background in many paintings by L. S. Lowry.

The library was then extended further to the right with the addition in 1879 of the Picton Reading Room and to the rear with the Hornby Library in 1906. All three of these are Grade II* listed buildings and are built in a classical style similar to other buildings on the street.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8KEYR - Doncaster is a large town in South Yorkshire, England. Together with its surrounding suburbs and settlements, the town forms part of the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, which had a mid-2017 est. population of 308,900. The town itself has a population of 109,805 The Doncaster Urban Area had a population of 158,141 in 2011 and includes Doncaster and neighbouring small villages. Part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974, Doncaster is about 17 miles (30 km) north-east of Sheffield, with which it is served by an international airport, Doncaster Sheffield Airport in Finningley. Under the Local Government Act 1972, Doncaster was incorporated into a newly created metropolitan borough in 1974, itself incorporated with other nearby boroughs in the 1974 creation of the metropolitan county of South Yorkshire.
Doncaster is represented in the House of Commons by three MPs
all three constituencies are currently held by Labour. Rosie Winterton represents Doncaster Central, former Labour Party leader, Ed Miliband represents Doncaster North, and Caroline Flint represents Don Valley.
At a European level, Doncaster is part of the Yorkshire and the Humber constituency and is represented by six MEPs.
Doncaster is one of only twelve UK boroughs to have a directly-elected mayor, a position currently held by Labour's Ros Jones.
In September 2014, UKIP held its annual party conference at Doncaster Racecourse. UKIP party leader Nigel Farage claimed that by holding the conference in Doncaster, UKIP were now parking our tanks on the Labour Party's lawn referring to Labour leader Ed Miliband's Doncaster North constituency. Shortly afterwards in the seat, at the 2015 general election, UKIP won 8,928 votes to Labour's 20,708. In the 2016 EU Referendum, however, Doncaster voted 69% to leave the European Union

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHBJPX - City Hall is a building in Southwark, London which previously served as the headquarters of the Greater London Authority (GLA) between July 2002 and December 2021. It is located in the London Borough of Southwark, on the south bank of the River Thames near Tower Bridge. In June 2020, the Greater London Authority started a consultation on proposals to vacate City Hall and move to The Crystal, a GLA-owned property in Newham, at the end of 2021. The decision was confirmed on 3 November 2020 and the GLA vacated City Hall on 2 December 2021. The Southwark location is ultimately owned by the government of Kuwait.
History
City Hall was designed by Norman Foster and was constructed at a cost of £43 million on a site formerly occupied by wharves serving the Pool of London. It opened in July 2002, two years after the Greater London Authority was created, and was leased rather than owned by the Greater London Authority. Despite its name, City Hall is not in and does not serve a city (according to UK law), often adding to the confusion of Greater London with the City of London, which has its headquarters at Guildhall. In June 2011, Mayor Boris Johnson announced that for the duration of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the building would be called London House
The building has an unusual, bulbous shape, purportedly intended to reduce its surface area and thus improve energy efficiency, although the excess energy consumption caused by the exclusive use of glass (in a double facade) overwhelms the benefit of shape. Despite claiming the building demonstrates the potential for a sustainable, virtually non-polluting public building
The building is located on the River Thames in the London Borough of Southwark, as part of the extended pedestrianised South Bank. It forms part of a larger development called More London, including offices and shops. The nearest London Underground and National Rail station is London Bridge

Eleven small denominations, all sharing the Wesleyan heritage, came together in a series of unions between 1896 and 1958. One of those unions in 1908 is taken as the official beginning of the Church.
Of the eleven denominations, three were British. The first of these, a group in Scotland led by Rev. George Sharpe, joined in 1915. This was followed by two other groups in England, one led by Mr. David Thomas of london, the other led by Rev. Maynard G. James which headquarters in Lancashire, which united in 1952 and 1955.
THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH:
The Wesleyan Rivival that saved eighteenth century England from Revolution reaffirmed the testimaony and experience of the Early Church that God is ableto forgive man's sin and cleanse his heart from all unrighteousness (1John 1:9).
The mission of the church is, To make Christlike disciples in the nations. The Church of the |Nazarene seeks to share the love of God and the good news about Jesus Christ, and to demonstrate concern for the whole person by ministering to the Spiritual, Mental, Social and Physical.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K5J0D0 - Symphony Hall is a 2,262 seat concert venue in Birmingham, England. It was officially opened by the Queen on 12 June 1991, although it had been in use since 15 April 1991. It is home to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and hosts around 270 events a year. It was completed at a cost of £30 million. The hall's interior is modelled on the Musikverein in Vienna and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The venue, managed alongside Town Hall, presents a programme of jazz, world, folk, rock, pop and classical concerts, organ recitals, spoken word, dance, comedy, educational and community performances, and is also used for conferences and business events as part of the International Convention Centre.
In 2016 the Concert Hall Acoustics expert Leo Beranek ranked Symphony Hall as having the finest acoustics in the United Kingdom, and the seventh best in the world. Proof of these fine acoustics is that a pre-opening acoustic test demonstrated that if a pin was dropped on stage, the sound could be heard from anywhere in the hall
Symphony Hall was designed by Percy Thomas Partnership and Renton Howard Wood Levin, (who together formed the Convention Centre Partnership for the ICC) with specialist help from Russell Johnson, founder of acoustic consultants Artec. A particularly innovative feature is the hall's acoustic flexibility. It has a reverberation chamber behind the stage and extending high along the sides, adding 50% to the hall's volume, the doors to which can be remotely opened or closed. The U-shaped reverberation chamber area has a volume of 12,700 cubic metres (450,000 cu ft). There is an acoustic canopy which can be raised or lowered above the stage. Dampening panels can be extended or retracted to ensure that the sound of the space is perfectly matched to the scale and style of the music to be performed. There are also reverse fan walls at the rear of the hall which provide further reflections of sound

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDY30A - In the United States and Canada, timber-frame construction has been revived since the 1970s and is now experiencing a thriving renaissance of the ancient skills. This is largely due to such practitioners as Steve Chappell, Jack Sobon, and Tedd Benson, who studied old plans and techniques and revived a long-neglected technique. Once a handcrafted skill passed down, timber-frame construction has now been modernized with the help of modern industrial tools such as the CNC machines. These machines and mass-production techniques have assisted growth and made for more affordable frames and shorter lead-times for projects.
Timber-framed structures differ from conventional wood-framed buildings in several ways. Timber framing uses fewer, larger wooden members, commonly timbers in the range of 15 to 30 cm (6 to 12), while common wood framing uses many more timbers with dimensions usually in the 5 to 25 cm (2 to 10) range. The methods of fastening the frame members also differ. In conventional framing, the members are joined using nails or other mechanical fasteners, whereas timber framing uses the traditional mortice and tenon or more complex joints that are usually fastened using only wooden pegs.[13] Modern complex structures and timber trusses often incorporate steel joinery such as gusset plates, for both structural and architectural purposes.
Recently, it has become common practice to enclose the timber structure entirely in manufactured panels such as SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels). Although the timbers can only be seen from inside the building when so enclosed, construction is less complex and insulation is greater than in traditional timber building.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG39NX - Early in his career, in 1896, Mackintosh met Catherine Cranston (widely known as Kate Cranston or simply Miss Cranston), an entrepreneurial local business woman who was the daughter of a Glasgow tea merchant and a strong believer in temperance.
The temperance movement was becoming increasingly popular in Glasgow at the turn of the century and Miss Cranston had conceived the idea of a series of art tearooms, venues where people could meet to relax and enjoy non-alcoholic refreshments in a variety of different rooms within the same building. This proved to be the start of a long working relationship between Miss Cranston and Mackintosh. Between 1896 and 1917 he designed and re-styled interiors in all four of her Glasgow tearooms, often in collaboration with his wife Margaret MacDonald.
Mackintosh's redesigned external facade was a carefully considered asymmetric, abstractly modelled composition with shallow curves on some areas of the surface, and varying depths of recesses to windows and the main entrance. The composition respected the urban context of the neighbouring buildings, matching the major cornice lines and heights of adjoining buildings, whilst still exploring emerging ideas of Art Nouveau and the modern movement.
The ground floor entrance door is placed far to the left of a wide band of fenestration, both of which are recessed below the first-floor level, the location of the Room de Luxe. To emphasise the importance of this room, Mackintosh designed a full width bay window, projecting the facade outwards with a gentle curve. The two storeys above this featured a more regular pattern of fenestration with three individual windows per floor, recessed to different degrees. The asymmetry of the composition was continued by widening the left side windows and creating another gentle curve in this part of the facade, extending through both storeys. This repeated the curved form of the first floor and emphasised the heavily recessed entrance to the building

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDJPHW - In May 2008 it was announced that some of the complex of buildings that hold the Central Library will be demolished and replaced with modern buildings suitable for use with modern IT services. The historic buildings in the complex will be refurbished to provide modern facilities. In October 2009 the proposed rebuild was shown to the public.
The main library building on William Brown Street closed on 23 July 2010, while closed, a temporary service operated from next door, on the second floor of Liverpool World Museum. It re-opened to the public on Friday 17th May 2013.
It is a member of the Libraries Together: Liverpool Learning Partnership (evolved from Liverpool Libraries Group) which formed in 1990. Under which, a registered reader at any of the member libraries can have access rights to the other libraries within the partnership

The land occupied by the development was part of the Port of Manchester and Manchester Docks.
The BBC signalled its intention to move jobs to Manchester in 2004, and the Salford Quays site was chosen in 2006. The Peel Group was granted planning permission to develop the site in 2007, and construction of the development, with its own energy generation plant and communications network, began the same year. Based in Quay House, the principal tenant is the BBC, whose move marks a large-scale decentralisation from London. BBC Children's, BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Research and BBC Sport are among the departments which have relocated to the development. ITV Granada completed the first phase of its move to MediaCityUK in March 2013. The Studios on Broadway house seven high-definition studios, claimed to be the largest such facility in Europe.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F0G7EH - This documentary stock photograph shows Berlin sky with Fernsehturm TV tower,Germany. The image records the Fernsehturm television tower in the Berlin skyline, making it useful for editorial features on East German modernity, skyline identity, Cold War symbolism, tourism and Berlin place branding. Berlin is a city where ordinary street details often carry heavy layers of history, from Prussian and imperial architecture to the Weimar period, Nazi rule, wartime destruction, division, the DDR, reunification, tourism, gentrification and contemporary creative culture. The caption and visible subject detail provide a specific point of entry into that wider story rather than a generic German city view. Buyers could use the photograph for articles about Berlin travel, Cold War memory, street art, museum interpretation, urban nightlife, river sightseeing, architecture, souvenir culture, public transport, pedestrian design or the way history is repackaged in modern tourism. Search-friendly composite terms include Berlin Mitte street art, DDR surveillance display, Berlin Fernsehturm skyline, River Spree pleasure boat, Ampelmann crossing light, Berliner Dom interior, Berlin urban culture and German capital tourism. If the subject is graffiti, it can illustrate the city as a living wall of political humour, youth culture, commercial branding and layered paste-ups. If it is heritage or church architecture, it can support more formal travel, culture, history and education uses. If it is a boat, toy or street sign, it gives editors an accessible human-scale route into a large city story. The documentary style keeps the image credible for web, magazine, guidebook, education, museum, travel, urban policy, politics, design, consumer and social commentary use. Its strength for Alamy search is the mix of precise caption wording and broader Berlin themes, allowing it to be found for both narrow subject searches and wider editorial needs.

History
Aerial photograph showing Salford Quays with Manchester (top) and Trafford (bottom)
Built by the Manchester Ship Canal Company, Salford Docks was the larger of two that made up Manchester Docks, the other being Pomona Docks to the east, which opened in 1903.[1] They were opened in 1894 by Queen Victoria and spanned 120 acres (49 ha) of water and 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land. At their height, the Manchester Docks was the third-busiest port in Britain, but after containerisation and the limit placed on vessel size on the Manchester Ship Canal, the docks declined in the 1970s. They closed in 1982, resulting in the loss of 3,000 jobs.
In 1983, Salford City Council acquired parts of the docks covering 220 acres (90 ha) from the Manchester Ship Canal Company with the aid of a derelict land grant. The area was rebranded as Salford Quays and redevelopment by Urban Waterside began in 1985 under the Salford Quays Development Plan.
Early in the planning stages for redevelopment of Salford Quays in 1988, potential was recognised for a landmark arts venue, the Salford Quays Centre for the Performing Arts, which became known as the Lowry Project in 1994. It had secured £64 million in funding by 22 February 1996.
The Lowry stands at the end of Pier 8, largely surrounded by the waters of the Manchester Ship Canal. Designed by James Stirling and Michael Wilford, it opened on 28 April 2000 and houses the 1,730 seat Lyric theatre, the 466 seat Quays theatre, studio spaces and 17,330 sq ft (1,610 m2) of gallery space. There are cafes, bars and a restaurant at the south-western end of the building. The centre is associated with L. S. Lowry, and houses a collection of his work

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59WKD - This photograph shows a triangular yield road sign in the foreground, set against the modern glass façade of the Grand Canal Theatre, now known as the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, located at Grand Canal Dock in Dublin. The image was taken in daylight under clear blue skies, highlighting the strong contrast between the red-bordered traffic sign and the reflective grid of the contemporary office and cultural buildings behind it.
The yield sign, a standard element of road safety infrastructure, represents regulation, priority, and controlled movement within urban transport systems. Its placement within the rapidly developed Docklands area illustrates the intersection of everyday traffic management with high-profile cultural and commercial architecture.
The surrounding buildings, characterised by steel frames and extensive glazing, reflect the regeneration of Dublin's Docklands from former industrial and port land into a modern mixed-use district housing offices, theatres, and public spaces. The clean lines and geometric repetition of the glass panels reinforce the contemporary character of the area.
Images such as this are often used to illustrate themes of urban development, transport infrastructure, road safety, modern European cities, and the coexistence of cultural landmarks with functional street furniture. The composition also lends itself to conceptual interpretations around caution, priority, and balance within fast-changing urban environments.

Just when you thought pipes were so yesterday.....
One of my favourite tracks, good to hear it today!
'Hash Pipe' is a song by US indie rock band Weezer. Released in 2001, it was the first single off the band's long-awaited third album, Weezer (The Green Album).
The song was aparently inspired by a male transvestite prostitute known for rambling to people in Santa Monica. Weezer drummer Patrick Wilson is featured on the cover of the song's CD single holding a pack of Natural American Spirit cigarettes that has been blurred out due to copyright issues.

The new white Samuel Beckett Bridge (Irish: Droichead Samuel Beckett) is a cable-stayed bridge in Dublin that joins Sir John Rogerson's Quay on the south side of the River Liffey to Guild Street and North Wall Quay in the Docklands area.
The architect is Santiago Calatrava, a designer of a number of innovative bridges and buildings. This is the second bridge in the area designed by Calatrava, the first being the James Joyce Bridge, which is further upstream.
Constructed by a 'Graham Hollandia Joint Venture', the main span of the Samuel Beckett Bridge is supported by 31 cable stays from a doubly back-stayed single forward arc tubular tapered spar, with decking provided for four traffic and two pedestrian lanes. It is also capable of opening through an angle of 90 degrees allowing ships to pass through. This is achieved through a rotational mechanism housed in the base of the pylon.
The shape of the spar and its cables is said to evoke an image of a harp, a symbol of Ireland lying on its edge.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8FBAD - An engine order telegraph or E.O.T., often also called a Chadburn, is a communications device used on a ship (or submarine) for the pilot on the bridge to order engineers in the engine room to power the vessel at a certain desired speed. In early vessels, from the 1800s until about 1950, the device usually consisted of a round dial about nine inches in diameter with a knob at the center attached to one or more handles, and an indicator pointer on the face of the dial. Modern E.O.T.s on vessels which still use them use electronic light and sound signals.
Traditional E.O.T.s required a pilot wanting to change speed to ring the telegraph on the bridge, moving the handle to a different position on the dial. This would ring a bell in the engine room and move their pointer to the position on the dial selected by the bridge. The engineers hear the bell and move their handle to the same position to signal their acknowledgment of the order, and adjust the engine speed accordingly. Such an order is called a bell, for example the order for a ship's maximum speed, flank speed, is called a flank bell.
For urgent orders requiring rapid acceleration, the handle is moved three times so that the engine room bell is rung three times. This is called a cavitate bell because the rapid acceleration of the ship's propeller will cause the water around it to cavitate, causing a lot of noise and wear on the propellers. Such noise is undesirable during conflicts because it can give away a vessel's position.
On most modern vessels the EOT acts as a direct throttle with no intervening engine room personnel.
This one has positions of Full Ahead, Half, Slow, Dead Slow, Stand By, Stop. Astern Finished with engines, dead slow, slow, half and full. German U-boats of World War II contained the dial position Alarmtauchen, the order for a crash dive.
Most seen these days are copies. Most do not include the CL of Chadburn Liverpool which was the place of manufacture, as in this specimen h

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF224F - Interior panorama of Cairo Street Chapel, Warrington, Cheshire UK.
Its in an unloved street near an old cabinet works building. On this day I passed the lights were on so I walked in. No tripod, so the panorama was hand held.
Cairo Street Chapel is the second oldest surviving place of worship in Warrington and is tucked away just away from the modern shopping area. It holds a lot of history of the town in many of the characters connected with it.
Robert Yates was the founder, ejected from the Church of England in 1662, he obtained a licence for public worship. In 1689, religious dissent was permitted by the Act of Toleration. This Act enabled Dissenters to build their own places of worship and in 1703, following the raising of sufficient money through subscriptions, a chapel was built on land behind Randle Myddleton's Smithy in Sankey Street. This is now Cairo Street.
A deed signed between Dr. Charles Owen Minister of the Chapel and the Earl of Warrington refers to a late erected building or meeting place .
It was during the ministry of Dr. Owen in 1745 that the present larger chapel was built.
Dr. Owen was the minister of the chapel for fifty years from 1696 to 1746 and it was he who lead consolidation and growth of the chapel.
In 1863 the chapel was extensively repaired, the old gallery was taken down and the interior re-seated to make it look much as it does in this photograph.
The Revd. John Seddon followed Charles Owen in the Ministry at Cairo Street Chapel or Sankey Street Chapel as it was then known. The son of a dissenting Minister born in Hereford and educated at Caleb Rotherham's Academy in Kendal, he campaigned and fundraised tirelessly for the establishment in 1757 of The Warrington Academy.
He was a lecturer at the Academy, its Secretary and Minister of the Chapel. Active in many spheres of dissenting and town life, John Seddon was the first President of The Warrington Public Library.

The Roman Baths complex is a site of historical interest in the English city of Bath. The house is a well-preserved Roman site for public bathing.
The Roman Baths themselves are below the modern street level. There are four main features: the Sacred Spring, the Roman Temple, the Roman Bath House and the Museum holding finds from Roman Bath. The buildings above street level date from the 19th century.
The Baths are a major tourist attraction and, together with the Grand Pump Room, receive more than one million visitors a year, with 1,037,518 people during 2009. It was featured on the 2005 TV program Seven Natural Wonders as one of the wonders of the West Country. Visitors can see the Baths and Museum but cannot enter the water. An audio guide is available in several languages.
In 2009 a grant of £90,000 was made to Bath and North East Somerset Council to contribute towards the cost of re-developing displays and improving access to the Roman Baths, by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport/Wolfson Fund, which was established to promote improvements in Museums and Galleries in England.

Imperial Point was the first of the high-rise residential buildings on the Quays: a 16-storey tower built alongside the Lowry Outlet Mall on Pier 8 (Central Wharf) in 2001. Finished in sand-coloured cladding with grey and steel finishes to the roof, service cores and balconies, the lower levels are integrated into the mall.
Sovereign Point is the sister building of Imperial Point, towards the rear of the Lowry Outlet Mall. Completed in 2005, its 20 stories are residential, except for some commercial units at ground level, including Sovereign Food and Wine, the Quays' first grocery store. The tower's design was controversial and regarded as having a poor aesthetic on all but the water-facing elevation and is in stark relief to the neighbouring low-rise Winnipeg Quay.
The NV Buildings were designed by Broadway Maylan and completed between 2004 and 2005. The development consists of three 18-storey residential towers, each 180 feet (55 m) in height. Costing £36 million, they stand in a line overlooking Huron Basin from the waterside of Pier 9 (North Wharf), their curved frontages are designed to represent sails. At night, the buildings are illuminated by green lights atop curved poles, and green flood light to either side. The Type 3 apartment in the NV Buildings won gold for Best Apartment in 2004 What House? awards.
The City Lofts construction began in 2005 and completed in late 2007. The development consists of two linked towers: one 9 stories, the other 19 stories. They are on land adjacent to the bund carrying the Quays road, which separates the Manchester Ship Canal from the cleaned water of the Salford Quays basins. The apartments' interior design was by Conran & Partners. Interest in the development was limited, due to the slump in the housing market, and in July 2008, City Lofts was forced to place all

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCK2J - A yellow Bee Network double decker bus travelling through the Deansgate area of Manchester city centre, passing the historic Deansgate Station, formerly associated with Knott Mill, with modern glass towers, cranes and newly built blocks rising behind. The image captures the contrast between old and new Manchester: red brick railway architecture and Victorian transport infrastructure in the foreground, set against the fast changing skyline of high rise residential and commercial development around Deansgate, Castlefield and the wider city centre. The Bee Network is Greater Manchester's joined-up transport system, developed by Transport for Greater Manchester to integrate buses, trams, walking, wheeling and cycling, with buses brought into the network from 2023. TfGM promotes the distinctive yellow branding with the phrase Say yellow to the Bee Network , making the bus immediately recognisable as part of the region's public transport reform. This photograph is useful for editorial coverage of bus franchising, local control of public transport, Greater Manchester devolution, sustainable travel, city transport, urban regeneration, new apartment towers, commuting, active travel, road space and the changing built environment of central Manchester. The visible cyclist, road junction, rail bridge, station building, bus livery and construction skyline give the image strong search value for stories about integrated transport, city centre growth, public infrastructure, housing development, railway heritage and everyday movement through the modern city. The sunny daylight and blue sky provide a clear documentary view, while the mix of historic Deansgate Station and contemporary towers makes the scene especially suitable for articles contrasting Manchester's industrial past with its present phase of dense urban redevelopment.

It has also staged Challenge Cup semi-finals, the European Nations Final, the National League Grand Finals' Day, two games of the 2013 Rugby League World Cup and four games of the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. It is the 62nd largest stadium in England.
Ground was broke at the new site in 2002 and bucked the common trend of modern stadia by including terracing areas rather than being an all-seater stadium, with the South and West stands both containing terracing It also has enormous pitch dimensions of 120 m x 74 m, as requested by Warrington's head coach of the time, Paul Cullen, due to his desire to play expansive rugby. The stadium officially opened in 2004
On 3 March 2011, the club announced that the corners of the East Stand at the stadium would be filled in to create a further 2,000 spaces made up of seating and terracing for the 2012 season. The stadium capacity, set at 15,000 for the first sell-out home match against St. Helens in 2012, was increased to 15,200 and can grow to 15,693 as the club proves it can handle the bigger crowds and get extra safety certificates. The club has also announced plans to increase the stadium's capacity to around 22,000 should the need arise.

The new car park, which was due to open
in December 2017, is a great example of
how architects and contractors can work in
partnership with Maple to transform typically
dull and utilitarian buildings into an integral and
aesthetically appealing part of the urban realm.
With its hexagon-featured golden façade, the
car park complements the other elements of
the £107m Time Square development.
The new car park is an integral and important
part of the Time Square project as it will
underpin and support the whole scheme, said
the leader of Warrington Borough Council, Terry
O'Neill.
Architect's ratings
Leach Rhodes Walker described us as excellent'
after the successful collaboration. Maple's
knowledge and craftsmanship was excellent
throughout, said LRW's lead project designer,
Ka Yin Man. From when we spoke to sales
about the commercials, to (dealing with) the
design and projects teams, the whole experience
was collaborative. In a post-project interview,
the architects' firm gave us top marks for design
services, project support, meeting deadlines
and the quality of the finished product. Added
Ka Yin: Maple were always helpful, and any
questions were dealt with promptly. Everyone
was very knowledgeable and accommodating.
The end result was even better than expected
The project was one of the first to use the new
dedicated prototype area at Maple's factory in
Stockport. The architects and contractors I & H
Brown Construction were able to view real-life
examples of the bespoke perforated panels and
golden hexagon cut-outs - at actual size. The
prototypes were powder-coated in the specified
colour, and fitted to the display framework using
actual fittings - meaning that any changes to the
design or specification could be made without
it having a major impact on timings or budget

The city has had three cathedrals. The first was St. Mary's, a monastic building, only a few ruins of which remain. The second was St Michael's, a 14th-century Gothic church later designated Cathedral, that remains a ruined shell after its bombing during the Second World War. The third is the new St Michael's Cathedral, built after the destruction of the former and a celebration of 20th-century architecture.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D9MJN4 - The red BBC Breakfast studio at MediaCityUK.
It is a 200-acre (81 ha) mixed-use property development site on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford and Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. The project is being developed by Peel Media, and its principal tenants are media organisations and the University of Salford.
