Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM996D - A crisp winter cityscape of central Edinburgh, dominated by the distinctive sculptural Ribbon form crowning W Edinburgh within the St James Quarter development. The layered, spiralling roof feature rises above surrounding rooftops and mid-rise blocks, creating an instantly recognisable focal point in the skyline and a clear marker of the city's newer architecture within the wider historic urban fabric. Bright, low winter sunlight and a pale blue sky give the scene a clean, high-contrast look, with sharp detail across the buildings and the distant ridge line beyond the city.
The image reads as a modern Edinburgh story: regeneration and contemporary design sitting alongside older streets and long-established city views. The St James Quarter setting supports themes of retail and leisure, hospitality, luxury travel, and city-centre redevelopment, while the broader skyline context makes the picture useful for editorial coverage of Edinburgh tourism, winter city breaks, and Scotland's capital as a place of festivals, business travel, and year-round visitor economy. The composition also works well for architecture-led uses, with strong geometric layering, repeating window grids, and the singular ribbon-like crown providing a clear hero feature for headlines and destination pages.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM986P - A documentary winter view of Regent House on Heaton Lane in Stockport, a tall landmark tower with prominent REGENT HOUSE lettering and Travelodge branding high on the fa??ade. The photo is taken from street level, emphasising the scale contrast between the high-rise block and the lower, older buildings in the foreground. Crisp sunlight and a clear blue sky give the scene sharp edges and strong tonal contrast, suggesting cold-season conditions with bright, dry weather rather than rain.
The image is useful as a straightforward location identifier for Stockport town centre because the building name and Travelodge signage are both readable. It also carries a wider towns changing story: Regent House is associated with office accommodation, while Travelodge operates a hotel within the building, reflecting the ongoing shift toward mixed-use occupation and adaptive reuse in central urban areas.
Editorially, this works well for themes such as UK budget hotels, business travel, city breaks, urban regeneration, and the repurposing of older commercial towers. The clean winter light and uncluttered composition make it particularly suitable for general illustration where an editor needs a recognisable Stockport setting without crowds or close-up portrait detail.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6C3 - A brightly decorated bar boat moored at Paddington Basin on the Grand Union Canal in west London, photographed at Paddington Basin, London W2 1TR. The floating venue features seating, lighting and decorative elements designed for socialising, with the canal and surrounding modern buildings forming a distinctive urban backdrop.
Paddington Basin is part of a wider regeneration area that has transformed former industrial and transport-related land into a mixed-use district combining offices, housing, restaurants and public spaces. The presence of bar boats and leisure craft reflects a broader revival of London's historic canal network, which once played a crucial role in freight transport but is now increasingly associated with recreation, tourism and lifestyle uses.
The Grand Union Canal, one of the longest canals in the UK, runs through west and north London, linking the capital with the Midlands. In areas such as Paddington Basin, the canal has become a focal point for waterside placemaking, where floating caf??s, bars and cultural venues add vibrancy to the public realm and encourage informal social interaction.
Scenes like this are often used editorially to illustrate themes of urban regeneration, adaptive reuse of infrastructure, the growth of waterside leisure economies and changing patterns of city life. Photographed in daylight with people, seating and moored boats visible, the image captures the canal as a lived-in urban space rather than a purely historic relic.
The photograph offers strong editorial value for subjects including London waterways, floating hospitality, contemporary urban leisure, tourism and the reinvention of post-industrial environments, making it suitable for travel features, lifestyle coverage and urban studies publications.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6DT - A summer daytime view of the Overgate Shopping Centre in Dundee city centre, photographed at Overgate, Dundee DD1 1UF, with pedestrians moving through the open public space and the Primark store clearly visible. The scene shows families, shoppers and visitors using the pedestrianised area during warm weather, reflecting everyday retail activity in the heart of the city.
The Overgate is Dundee's principal indoor shopping centre and a key anchor of the city's retail and leisure offer. It houses a mix of national chains, fashion retailers, food outlets and services, forming an important part of Dundee's local economy and employment base. Stores such as Primark act as major footfall drivers, attracting shoppers from across the city and wider Tayside region.
In recent years, UK city centres have faced significant challenges from changing consumer habits, online retail growth and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Scenes such as this are often used editorially to illustrate discussions around high-street resilience, urban regeneration and the role of city centres as social as well as commercial spaces.
The image captures the Overgate as more than a shopping destination, showing it as a shared civic environment where retail, leisure and public life intersect. Photographed under clear skies with strong natural light, the image offers strong editorial value for themes including urban retail, consumer culture, economic recovery and contemporary life in Scottish cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJTW - This photograph shows barges and narrowboats moored at New Islington Marina, located on the Ashton Canal close to Ancoats and the eastern edge of Manchester city centre. The canal, originally constructed in the late eighteenth century, formed part of the extensive inland waterway network that supported Manchester's rise as an industrial city, transporting raw materials and finished goods between mills, warehouses, and regional ports.
In the foreground, painted narrowboats sit quietly on the water, while modern apartment blocks and redeveloped former industrial buildings line the canal banks behind. The contrast highlights Manchester's transition from heavy industry to residential, commercial, and leisure uses, with historic waterways now forming a central feature of urban regeneration rather than industrial logistics.
New Islington and neighbouring Ancoats have undergone significant redevelopment over the past two decades, transforming former industrial land into mixed use neighbourhoods. The marina has become a focal point for waterside living, attracting residents, walkers, and visitors, while retaining the working character of the canal through active moorings.
Taken in daylight under broken cloud, the image captures a calm urban scene that illustrates how Manchester's industrial heritage continues to shape the modern city. The presence of historic canals alongside contemporary housing reflects a broader trend in UK cities, where former industrial infrastructure is repurposed to support sustainable urban living and place making.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAXJ8 - Architectural detail from a former railway warehouse on Deansgate in Manchester city centre, England, showing stone lettering reading London and the Continent set into a red-brick facade. The building was originally constructed as part of Manchester's extensive Victorian railway infrastructure, associated with long-distance rail connections linking the industrial city to London and continental Europe. Once used for storage and distribution during the height of Britain's railway and manufacturing era, the structure has since been repurposed as part of a wider regeneration of the Deansgate area. Today, the former warehouse forms part of a mixed-use district containing retail, leisure, and entertainment venues, illustrating the adaptive reuse of historic industrial buildings within modern city centres. The image highlights Manchester's layered urban history, where surviving railway architecture and industrial heritage coexist with contemporary commercial and cultural life, reflecting broader patterns of regeneration and heritage conservation in post-industrial British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGJD7 - An Edinburgh Trams service passes through the Ocean Terminal stop in Leith, showing a modern low-floor tram manufactured by Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF). The image captures the tram operating along the Newhaven extension, which reconnects the waterfront districts of north Edinburgh to the city's light-rail network.
The background of newly built apartment blocks highlights the close relationship between transport investment and urban regeneration in Leith, where former docklands and retail areas have been redeveloped for residential and mixed-use purposes. The tram line provides a fixed, electric public-transport link between the waterfront, the city centre and Edinburgh Airport, supporting lower-carbon travel and higher-density urban living.
Photographed in daylight during normal service, the image documents contemporary public transport operating within a changing urban environment. It is suitable for editorial use relating to sustainable transport, housing development, regeneration policy, and modern city infrastructure in Scotland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP348 - A wide riverside view of the Dunnes Stores retail complex at the Waterside in Coleraine, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, positioned directly alongside the River Bann. The modern department store building features a combination of light stone cladding and large glazed sections, reflecting contemporary retail architecture associated with large Irish-owned retail chains.
The store forms a prominent part of Coleraine's waterside commercial area, with car parking and pedestrian access integrated along the river frontage. Dunnes Stores is a well-established retailer across Ireland and the UK, combining grocery, clothing, and household goods under one brand, and this location serves as a major shopping destination for Coleraine and the surrounding Causeway Coast region.
Photographed in natural daylight with the river in the foreground, the image documents modern retail development in a Northern Irish town, illustrating the shift towards larger out-of-town or edge-of-centre retail environments and their relationship with urban regeneration and waterfront landscapes. The scene highlights everyday consumer activity and the economic role of large retail anchors within regional town centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMNT - This image shows Central Parade flats and its prominent clock tower on Church Hill in Walthamstow, East London, an instantly recognisable local landmark within the Walthamstow Village area of the London Borough of Waltham Forest. The building dates from the interwar period and reflects the practical yet decorative municipal architecture of the 1930s, combining red brick construction with patterned concrete panels and a tall vertical tower housing a large public clock.
The development was designed as mixed-use housing, with commercial premises at ground level and residential flats above, a common urban model intended to support walkable neighbourhoods and local trade. The clock tower acts as both a civic feature and a wayfinding landmark, visually anchoring Church Hill and the surrounding streets.
The photograph was taken in daylight under a bright, partly cloudy summer sky, which highlights the contrasting textures of brick, concrete, and glazing across the facade. Pedestrians, traffic signals, and nearby residential buildings place the structure firmly within everyday London life, emphasising its continued role as functional housing rather than a preserved monument.
Images such as this are well suited to editorial use covering themes of London housing, social and municipal architecture, urban regeneration, local identity, mixed-use development, and the character of historic residential areas in East London.

It conveys themes of sustainable transport, European city living, urban mobility, and the integration of trams into historic streetscapes. The photograph is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to public transport, German cities, urban life, sustainable travel, and European street scenes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JY56XC - Crewe Market enjoys a rich history dating back to 1854, when The Cheese Hall was erected, housing over 2,000 tonnes of Cheshire cheese. A Corn Exchange and warehouse were built next door for butter and bacon, and over time the market cemented itself as a vibrant general market for Crewe.
Markets have been continually evolving for centuries, and the early 2000's saw the rise of online shopping, supermarkets and discount stores creating challenges for Crewe's General Market.
The Market Hall building needed investment to make it suitable for 21st-century shopping habits, in order to support a wide community of small businesses.
Crewe market has recently undergone major redevelopment works to breathe fresh life into this historic building. The historic Shambles units have been sympathetically restored, using heritage colours and materials to celebrate the market's history, while making it fit for an exciting future.
In May 2021, Crewe Market reopened, home to an exciting selection of independent businesses offering street food, fresh food and retail goods.
Crewe Market traders are local to the Crewe area, and represent the high standards of quality, customer service and passion that make small businesses the backbone of our town centres. Find out more about our traders here.
The Market Hall is now a mixed-use destination venue, offering customers the chance to shop, eat, drink, rest and play, with a weekly programme of family-friendly entertainment, and a regular schedule of pop-up and speciality markets, community events and family activities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRM39K - Blackpool Heritage Trams are a mixed fleet of restored vehicles that run on the Blackpool Tramway, which runs from Blackpool to Fleetwood on the Fylde Coast in Lancashire, England. The line dates back to 1885 and is one of the oldest electric tramways in the world.[1] It is operated by Blackpool Transport (BT) and is the last surviving first-generation tramway in the United Kingdom. Excluding museums, it is one of only a few tramways in the world to still use double-decker trams.
Most services on the line are now operated by a fleet of modern Bombardier Flexity 2 trams, but a Heritage Tram service using the traditional trams operates on Bank Holidays, select weekdays and weekends from January to December, as well as during the Blackpool Illuminations.
The Heritage fleet is a large fleet of vehicles that were mainly retained from previous generations of the town's tramway operations, as well as some from other locations. They are now operated by Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours between Pleasure Beach and North Pier as standard and can be caught at the 'Heritage Tram Tours' stops, identifiable by a green circular sign.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRM3XW - Rock (often known by its place of origin, for instance Blackpool rock or Brighton rock) is a type of hard stick-shaped boiled sugar confectionery most usually flavoured with peppermint or spearmint. It is commonly sold at tourist (usually seaside) resorts in the United Kingdom (such as Brighton, Southend-on-Sea, Scarborough, Llandudno or Blackpool) and Ireland (e.g. Bray and Strandhill)
in Gibraltar
in Denmark in towns such as L??kken and Ebeltoft
and in Sydney and Tasmania, Australia.
It usually takes the form of a cylindrical stick (a stick of rock), normally 1?2.5 cm (0.39?0.98 in) in diameter and 20?25 cm (7.9?9.8 in) long. Blackpool rock is usually at least 2.5 cm (0.98 in) in diameter, and can be as thick as 17 cm (6.7 in) across and up to 2 m (6.6 ft) long when made for special retail displays. These cylinders usually have a pattern embedded throughout the length, which is often the name of the resort where the rock is sold, so that the name can be read on both ends of the stick (reversed at one end) and remains legible even after pieces are bitten off. Rock is also manufactured as a promotional item, for example with a company name running through it.
It is sometimes found in the form of individual sweets, with writing or a pattern in the centre
these are, in effect, slices of rock.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPH6R4 - Gwatkins Cidery and cider maker Denis Gwatkin from Herefordshire UK. Cider has a lengthy history in the UK dating back to around the 12th Century and possibly even earlier. In terms of Gwatkin Cidery's history, Denis says our orchards are first marked on our 1830 map, so cider making has a long tradition on our farm, which started out as a grange for the nearby abbey in 1147.
Gwatkin Cidery is a uniquely family-owned and operated farm, business, and home. We are one of the largest if not the largest traditional cider makers in Britain. By traditional we mean that we only allow natural fermentation to occur, we don't use sulphites to kill off the natural yeast and substitute them with a wine yeast, says Denis. They make and sell about 35 ciders and perrys (fermented pear) including seasonal rotations and a few local beer selections.
All of the cider produced at Gwatkin is packaged and sold in bottles as most traditional-style cideries do. While there is no inherent difference to taste of ciders sold in cans versus bottles, caning and caning lines are a rather modern technology. A few of the ciders Gwatkin Cidery makes include Kingstone Black, Golden Valley Scrumpy, award winning Yarlington Mill Cider, and Stoke Red Cider.
For Denis, his favorite thing about cider making is tasting the end product after months of slow fermentation in our wooden barrels. He emphasized that cider is naturally fermented by wild yeasts, a taste of the past before Louis Pasteur started advising other cider makers in the late nineteenth century.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHPYEX - Liverpool South Parkway station is a railway station and bus interchange in the Garston district of Liverpool, England. It serves, via a bus link, Liverpool John Lennon Airport in the neighbouring suburb of Speke, as well as providing an interchange between main line services and the Merseyrail rapid transit/commuter rail network
The station is located towards the southern end of Merseyrail's Northern Line and on the junction of two main lines: the City Line from Liverpool to Manchester via Warrington and the Liverpool branch of the West Coast Main Line to London via Crewe
Allerton Traction Maintenance Depot is situated to the immediate east of the station
The station was built at a crossing point between two railway lines that had until then been served by separate stations. The first was the Cheshire Lines Committee (CLC) line from Liverpool Central to Manchester via Warrington Central, which ran from west to east. The second was the line built by the St Helens Railway from Liverpool Lime Street to Warrington Bank Quay, which crossed from northwest to southeast. The latter route became part of the Liverpool branch of the West Coast Main Line when it was connected to a new route from Crewe via the newly built Runcorn Railway Bridge. The original line to Warrington Bank Quay is now closed to passenger trains. The two lines were served by two separate stations in the area, respectively Garston and Allerton (though the latter was also located in Garston)
The first proposals for an interchange station at Garston were made in the 1960s and 1970s, when the Merseyrail semi-underground network was being planned

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CBET91 - Sterling banknotes are the banknotes in circulation in the United Kingdom and its related territories, denominated in pounds sterling (symbol: ?
ISO 4217 currency code GBP [Great Britain pound]).
Sterling banknotes are official currency in the United Kingdom, Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, British Antarctic Territory, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, and Tristan da Cunha in St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. One pound is equivalent to 100 pence. Three British Overseas Territories also have currencies called pounds which are at par with the pound sterling.
The Bank of England has a monopoly of banknote issuance in England and Wales but, for historic reasons, three banks in Scotland and four banks in Northern Ireland are permitted to issue their own currency ? but the law requires that the issuing banks hold a sum of Bank of England banknotes (or gold) equivalent to the total value of notes issued. Versions of the pound sterling issued by Crown dependencies and other areas are regulated only by local governments and not the Bank of England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AHGCJX - Hearing, or auditory perception, is the ability to perceive sounds by detecting vibrations, changes in the pressure of the surrounding medium through time, through an organ such as the ear. The academic field concerned with hearing is auditory science.
Sound may be heard through solid, liquid, or gaseous matter. It is one of the traditional five senses
partial or total inability to hear is called hearing loss.
In humans and other vertebrates, hearing is performed primarily by the auditory system: mechanical waves, known as vibrations, are detected by the ear and transduced into nerve impulses that are perceived by the brain (primarily in the temporal lobe). Like touch, audition requires sensitivity to the movement of molecules in the world outside the organism. Both hearing and touch are types of mechanosensation.
The outer ear includes the pinna, the visible part of the ear, as well as the ear canal which terminates at the eardrum, also called the tympanic membrane. The pinna serves to focus sound waves through the ear canal toward the eardrum. Because of the asymmetrical character of the outer ear of most mammals, sound is filtered differently on its way into the ear depending on what vertical location it is coming from. This gives these animals the ability to localize sound vertically. The eardrum is an airtight membrane, and when sound waves arrive there, they cause it to vibrate following the waveform of the sound.
Hearing loss is associated with Alzheimer's disease and dementia with a greater degree of hearing loss tied to a higher risk. There is also an association between type 2 diabetes and hearing loss

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MCGB61 - Philip Parris Lynott (20 August 1949 ? 4 January 1986) was an Irish singer, bassist, and songwriter. His most commercially successful group was Thin Lizzy, of which he was a founding member, the principal songwriter, lead vocalist and bassist. He was known for his distinctive plectrum-based style on the bass, and for his imaginative lyrical contributions including working class tales and numerous characters drawn from personal influences and Celtic culture.
Lynott was born in the West Midlands of England, but grew up in Dublin with his grandparents. He remained close to his mother, Philomena, throughout his life. He fronted several bands as a lead vocalist, including Skid Row alongside Gary Moore, before learning the bass guitar and forming Thin Lizzy in 1969. After initial success with Whiskey in the Jar, the band had several hits in the mid-1970s such as The Boys Are Back in Town, Jailbreak and Waiting for an Alibi, and became a popular live attraction combining Lynott's vocal and songwriting skills with dual lead guitars. Towards the end of the 1970s, Lynott embarked upon a solo career, published two books of poetry, and after Thin Lizzy disbanded, he assembled and fronted the band Grand Slam.
In 2005, a life-size bronze statue of Lynott by Dublin sculptor Paul Daly was unveiled on Harry Street, off Grafton Street in Dublin. The ceremony was attended by Lynott's mother Philomena, and former band members Moore, Bell, Robertson, Downey, Gorham and Darren Wharton, who performed live
In the 1980s, Lynott increasingly suffered drug-related problems, particularly an addiction to heroin. In 1985, he had a final chart success with Moore, Out in the Fields, followed by the minor hit Nineteen, before his death in 1986. He remains a popular figure in the rock world

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy W42N8R - Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton MBE (born 7 January 1985) is a British racing driver who races in Formula One for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport. A five-time Formula One World Champion, he is often considered the best driver of his generation and widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport. He won his first World Championship title with McLaren in 2008, then moved to Mercedes where he won back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015 before winning back-to-back titles again in 2017 and 2018. The most successful British driver in the history of the sport, Hamilton has more World Championship titles (5) and more race victories (80) than any other British driver in Formula One. He also holds records for the all-time most career points (3,241), the most wins at different circuits, the all-time most pole positions (86) and the most grand slams in a season (3).
Born and raised in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, Hamilton's interest in racing started when his father bought him a radio-controlled car when he was six. He was signed to McLaren's young driver support programme in 1998, after he approached McLaren team principal Ron Dennis at an awards ceremony three years earlier and said one day I want to be racing your cars. After winning the British Formula Renault, Formula 3 Euro Series, and GP2 championships on his way up the racing career ladder, he made his Formula One debut twelve years after his initial encounter with Dennis, driving for McLaren in 2007. Coming from a mixed background, with a black father and white mother, Hamilton is the first and only black driver to race in Formula One

It is a 200-acre (81 ha) mixed-use property development site on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford and Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. The project is being developed by Peel Media, and its principal tenants are media organisations and the University of Salford. The land occupied by the development was part of the Port of Manchester and Manchester Docks.
The BBC signalled its intention to move jobs to Manchester in 2004, and the Salford Quays site was chosen in 2006. The Peel Group was granted planning permission to develop the site in 2007, and construction of the development, with its own energy generation plant and communications network, began the same year. Based in Quay House, the principal tenant is the BBC, whose move marks a large-scale decentralisation from London. BBC Children's, BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Research and BBC Sport are among the departments which have relocated to the development. ITV Granada completed the first phase of its move to MediaCityUK in March 2013. The Studios on Broadway house seven high-definition studios, claimed to be the largest such facility in Europe.

Pink Military (originally Pink Military Stand Alone) were a post-punk band from Liverpool. Led by former Big in Japan singer Jayne Casey, other band members included former Deaf School drummer Tim Whitaker, guitarist Martin Dempsey who also played in Yachts and It's Immaterial and drummers Chris Joyce (who also played in The Durutti Column and Simply Red) and Budgie (who went on to The Slits and Siouxsie and the Banshees).
John Peel gave the band his support and they recorded two sessions for his BBC Radio 1 show, the first in November 1979, featuring Budgie on drums, the second in May 1980. The band's only album, Do Animals Believe In God? was released in June 1980, with the band having signed a deal with Virgin Records who acted as distributors.
A further single was released the next month, and proved to be the final release before the band split up in 1981. Casey went on to form Pink Industry, while Dempsey joined It's Immaterial and later the Mel-o-Tones. Joyce joined The Durutti Column and later played in Simply Red.
The Old Vic is a theatre located just south-east of Waterloo Station in London on the corner of The Cut and Waterloo Road. Established in 1818 as the Royal Coburg Theatre, it was taken over by Emma Cons in 1880 when it was known formally as the Royal Victoria Hall. In 1898, a niece of Cons, Lilian Baylis assumed management and began a series of Shakespeare productions in 1914. The building was damaged in 1940 during air raids and it became a Grade II* listed building in 1951 after it reopened.
It was also the name of a repertory company that was based at the theatre. The company formed the core of the National Theatre of Great Britain on its formation in 1963, under Laurence Olivier. The National Theatre remained at the Old Vic until new premises were constructed on the South Bank, opening in 1976. It underwent complete refurbishment in 1985 and in 2003, American actor Kevin Spacey was appointed as new artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre Company which received considerable media attention.

?Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
Photobooth was the first EP from St Albans dance punk lads Friendly Fires in mid 2006. It more or less slipped under the radar until the bands full first album came out. The name Friendly Fires originates from the opening track of the Manchester Factory label 'Section 25' LP 'Always Now'. (Maybe a track from them later in this series).
The first self titled album was certified double gold in the UK. The band was nominated for a Best Breakthrough Award at The South Bank Show Awards and for ‘Best Dancefloor Filler’ at the NME Awards. They were also second on the bill on the NME Awards Tour 2009.
On 21 July 2009, the band was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. On 19 January 2010, the band was nominated for two Brit Awards
Best British Group and British Breakthrough Act.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4328233789 - 'The biggest jar of these I have ever seen that you can buy without being accompained by an adult. It has been slowley being dipped into by people in the office now for about two months.
However the lack of an official 'Jelly Belly' trademark or logo on this jar (or indeed Mr jelly Belly as mascot) leads me to believe that these are in fact imposter beans (possibly come by way of ebay and Hong Kong). Let the buyer beware.
If you are new to this type of candy, concept is that there are about 50 flavours and a few specials. These can be mixed together in the mouth to replicate the experience of a cocktail. EG Coconut and Watermelon.
Ronald Reagan was a big fan of them apparently and had a jar of them on his desk in the White House and on Air Force One next to the big red button labelled 'Nuke'. Through perserverance he also made them the first jelly beans in outer space, sending them on the 1983 Challenger shuttle for the astronauts. You would have thought Mars and Milky Way bars would be most appropriate. The jelly beans were proven at low gravity, hence got the gig.
In recent years the high sugar content of the original beans has been offset by the introduction of a range of 'Sport' and 'Extreme Sport' beans. These contain vitamines, electrolytes(?) and the latter caffeine. All safe for our vege' breatheren and 100% Kosher.
Now for some candy from Sheffield - www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3915943695/

A church in a delightful setting of thatched cottages and the George and Dragon pub. If you visit on a sunday, check out the cakes and afternoon teas served by the church helpers (summer only).
Parisioners use the collection envelope to leave an abbonymous donation. These days they can gift aid it etc, this was not the case in the 1960's when a ten bob not would be a quite vast sum and six pence (from two three penny bits) maybe more the norm to be dropped into the plate.
The nickel brass threepence was used between 1937–1970. A strange coin sometimes called 'thripp'nce', 'thrupp'nce', 'threpp'nce' or 'thripp'ny bit', 'thrupp'ny bit' by grannies and others alike.
The english brown ten bob note note here was issued by issued by the Bank of England. It started to disappear when the multi-edged fifty pence piece was introduced, a great silver medalion of a thing, larger than the one today in circulation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0MEC - Dusk at Media City UK in Salford, Manchester, England UK
A night shot with BBC hard at work with all lights on.
MediaCityUK is a 200-acre (81 ha) mixed-use property development site on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford and Trafford, Greater Manchester, England.
MediaCityUK is to be developed in two phases. The 36-acre (15 ha) first phase was completed in 2011, and the second is dependent on its success. Metrolink, Greater Manchester's light-rail system, was extended to MediaCityUK with the opening of the MediaCityUK Metrolink station on 20 September 2010 and further extensions are planned. Road access was improved by the construction of Broadway Link Road.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3875569520 - 'The D-Mark (Deutsche Mark) Sadly lost in 1999.
Taken at a silver service tearoom cafe near Bonn, West Germany.
The Deutsche Mark or German mark was the official currency of West Germany (1948–1990) and Germany (1990–2002) until the adoption of the euro in 2002. The old East Germany had their own 'East German Mark' or Ostmark or Mark der DDR.
It was first issued under Allied occupation in 1948 replacing the Reichsmark, and served as the Federal Republic of Germany's official currency from its founding the following year until 1999, when the Mark was replaced by the euro
its coins and banknotes remained in circulation, defined in terms of euros, until the introduction of euro notes and coins in early 2002.
The Deutsche Mark ceased to be legal tender immediately upon the introduction of the euro—in contrast to the other Eurozone nations, where the euro and legacy currency circulated side by side for up to two months. DM coins and banknotes continued to be accepted as valid forms of payment in Germany until 28 February 2002.
The Deutsche Bundesbank has guaranteed that all German mark in cash form may be changed into euros indefinitely, and one may do so at any branch of the Bundesbank in Germany. Banknotes can even be sent to the bank by mail.
Unfortunately in recent months the German nation has been bailing a big chunk of Europe's eurozone out. Much to the iritation of the German nation I suspect.
Germany's top court has ruled that aid for Greece and rescue packages for other eurozone countries was legal but said parliament must have greater say in any future bailout deals.
The Constitutional Court, based in Karlsruhe, western Germany, was responding to a challenge brought by six leading German Eurosceptics.
The five academics and one politician argued that the bailouts violated property rights and broke the 'no bailout' clause in the European Union's treaty.
In a landmark ruling, eagerly anticipated by jittery financial markets, the court said all 'large-scale' future aid packages must be approved by the parliament's budget committee.
Makes me glad Britain stayed with the pound sterling.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK6XN - Trump Tower is a 58-floor, 664-foot-tall (202 m) mixed-use skyscraper at 721?725 Fifth Avenue in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City,USA,between East 56th and 57th Streets. It serves as the headquarters for the Trump Organization. Additionally, it houses the penthouse condominium residence of businessman, real estate developer, and former U.S. president Donald Trump, who developed the building and named it after himself. Several members of the Trump family also live, or have resided, in the building. The tower stands on a plot where the flagship store of department-store chain Bonwit Teller was formerly located.
Der Scutt of Poor, Swanke, Hayden & Connell designed Trump Tower, and Trump and the Equitable Life Assurance Company (now the AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company) developed it. Although it is in one of Midtown Manhattan's special zoning districts, the tower was approved because it was to be built as a mixed-use development. Trump was permitted to add more stories to the tower in return for additional retail space and for providing privately owned public space on the ground floor, the lower level, and two outdoor terraces. There were controversies during construction, including the destruction of historically important sculptures from the Bonwit Teller store
Trump's alleged underpaying of contractors
and a lawsuit that Trump filed because the tower was not tax-exempt.
Construction on the building began in 1979. The atrium, apartments, offices, and stores opened on a staggered schedule from February to November 1983. At first, there were few tenants willing to move into the commercial and retail spaces
the residential units were sold out within months of opening. After Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and subsequent election, the tower saw large increases in visitation, though security concerns required the area around the tower to be patrolled for several years.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPH6JD - John Blanke was a royal trumpeter in the courts of Henry VII and Henry VIII, and remains the only black Tudor for whom we have an identifiable image. While serving two kings, he bore witness to some of the great moments in England's history and contributed to some of the greatest spectacles of the Tudor age.
We know nothing of the early life of John Blanke. In fact, John Blanke may not have been his name at birth. Blanke may have been a play on the words blanc (French) or blanco (Spanish), meaning white.
We know from manuscript evidence that John Blanke was described as black, and the two surviving images of him, painted around 1511, show that he had dark skin.
The earliest named reference to John Blanke was a payment made by Henry VII in December 1507, when he was one of eight royal trumpeters under the leadership of Peter de Casa Nova. This entry shows he was paid 20 shillings, at 8d. (old pence) each day, for his service in November.
John Blanke may have arrived in England in the entourage of Katherine of Aragon in 1501, who was to marry Prince Arthur, eldest son and heir of Henry VII. Katherine's entourage included a group of trumpeters and Henry VII rewarded the '9 trumpets of Spain' shortly after her arrival.
It is likely that Catalina of Motril, a Muslim Moor and one of Katherine's servants of the bedchamber, was also part of that contingent.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F0G6W3 - In Western culture, the finger, or the middle finger (as in giving someone the (middle) finger, the bird or flipping someone off) is an obscene hand gesture. The gesture communicates moderate to extreme contempt, and is roughly equivalent in meaning to fuck me, fuck you, shove it up your ass/arse, up yours or go fuck yourself. It is performed by showing the back of a hand that has only the middle finger extended upwards, though in some locales, the thumb is extended. Extending the finger is considered a symbol of contempt in several cultures, especially in the Western world. Many cultures use similar gestures to display their disrespect, although others use it to express pointing without intentional disrespect. The gesture is usually used to express contempt but can also be used humorously or playfully.
The gesture dates back to ancient Greece and it was also used in ancient Rome. Historically, it represented the phallus. In the early 1800s, it gained increasing recognition as a sign of disrespect and was used by music artists (notably more common among actors, celebrities, athletes and politicians
most still view the gesture as obscene). The index finger and ring finger besides the middle finger in more contemporary periods has been likened to represent the testes.
In July 2022 UK Tory MP,Andrea Jenkyns for Morley and Outwood, who gave protesters the middle finger made parliamentary under-secretary of state minister at the Department for Education. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JY56R8 - Crewe Market enjoys a rich history dating back to 1854, when The Cheese Hall was erected, housing over 2,000 tonnes of Cheshire cheese.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDM13X - The peace lines or peace walls are a series of border barriers in Northern Ireland that separate Catholic and Protestant neighbourhoods. They have been built at urban interface areas in Belfast, Derry, Portadown and elsewhere. The stated purpose of the peace lines is to minimise inter-communal violence between Catholics (most of whom are nationalists who self-identify as Irish) and Protestants (most of whom are unionists who self-identify as British).
The peace lines range in length from a few hundred yards to over three miles (5 km). They may be made of iron, brick, and/or steel and are up to 25 feet (7.6 m) high. Some have gates in them (sometimes staffed by police) that allow passage during daylight but are closed at night.
The most prominent peace lines in the past few years separate the nationalist Falls Road and unionist Shankill Road areas of West Belfast
the Catholic Short Strand from the Protestant Cluan Place areas of East Belfast
and the Protestant Fountain estate and Catholic Bishop Street area of Derry.
In 2008, a public discussion began about how and when the peace lines could be removed. While, on 1 September 2011, Belfast City Council agreed to develop a strategy regarding the removal of peace walls, a study was released in 2012 indicating that 69% of residents believe that the peace walls are still necessary because of potential violence. At the end of 2011, several local community initiatives resulted in the opening of a number of interface structures for a trial period.
In January 2012, the International Fund for Ireland launched a Peace Walls funding programme to support local communities who want to work towards beginning to remove the peace walls. In May 2013, the Northern Ireland Executive committed to the removal of all peace lines by mutual consent by 2023.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D9MJN4 - The red BBC Breakfast studio at MediaCityUK.
