Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EF6BEH - Interior detail from Peveril of the Peak in Manchester, showing a commemorative Campaign for Real Ale mirror for Trafford and Hulme Branch above a vase of bright spring tulips. The mirror records the long stewardship of landlady Nancy Swanick at The Pev, with visible dates of 25 January 1971 and 25 January 2011, marking forty years at one of Manchester's most celebrated traditional pubs. Trafford and Hulme CAMRA reported that Nancy and her late husband Thomas took on the Peveril in January 1971, before CAMRA itself had reached its own fortieth anniversary, and that the pub later received this presentation mirror. The photograph is valuable for editorial and stock uses around CAMRA, real ale, cask beer, pub campaigning, licensees, women in hospitality, long-serving publicans, Manchester drinking culture, heritage interiors and the survival of distinctive independent-feeling city pubs. Peveril of the Peak stands at 127 Great Bridgewater Street, Manchester, M1 5JQ, close to Oxford Road, Bridgewater Hall and the city centre. CAMRA describes the pub as Grade II listed with a historic interior, including its famous green tiled exterior, lobby bar, fixed seating, glazed screens and traditional rooms. The mirror's etched pub illustration, decorative script, branch wording and reflected room detail give the image strong local history value, while the red, yellow and white tulips add colour and a seasonal spring note. This is a quiet documentary image rather than a busy bar scene, useful for stories about pub preservation, community campaigning, traditional boozers, real ale branch history, Manchester heritage, licensing, hospitality longevity, pub memorabilia, local awards and the cultural importance of small details inside historic public houses. The indoor setting gives no clear exterior weather, but the flowers and soft light suggest a calm spring interior atmosphere.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EFEFXW - Historic CAMRA commemorative mirror displayed inside The Peveril of the Peak on Great Bridgewater Street in Manchester, with a vase of spring tulips placed below it. The mirror marks landlady Nancy Swanick's 40 years at the pub, recording the Trafford & Hulme Branch of the Campaign for Real Ale and the dates 25th January 1971 to 25th January 2011. The image combines pub history, real ale culture, Manchester social life and a personal tribute to one of the city's best-known traditional pub figures. The Peveril of the Peak is a Grade II listed Manchester pub, recognised for its distinctive green tiled exterior and historic interior, and remains strongly associated with cask ale, CAMRA campaigning and the survival of independent pub character in the city centre. The mirror's reflective surface shows part of the room behind, while the handwritten-style lettering, branch details and CAMRA reference make it a valuable documentary image of pub memorabilia and beer heritage. The fresh red, yellow and orange tulips add colour, softness and a seasonal spring note to an otherwise muted interior scene, suggesting care, remembrance and continued affection for the pub and its long-serving landlady. The photograph is useful for editorial features on Manchester pubs, historic pub interiors, CAMRA, real ale, cask beer, women in pub history, long-serving licensees, community pubs, urban drinking culture, pub preservation, heritage interiors, local history and traditional public houses as social meeting places. Visible text includes The Campaign for Real Ale, Trafford & Hulme Branch, 25th January 1971, 25th January 2011 and Presented to commemorate, all relevant for picture researchers seeking authentic CAMRA and Peveril of the Peak material. The warm indoor light, cream wall, glass vase and reflected architecture give the image a quiet archive quality, suitable for stories about pub culture, Manchester memory, beer campaigning and small details of social history.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJW3 - A wide-angle view of the Express Building on Great Ancoats Street in Manchester city centre, photographed in August 2025 during a period of bright summer weather. Clear blue skies and strong sunlight create striking reflections across the building's glass curtain wall, producing changing patterns of light that emphasise its geometric design.
Completed in the late 1930s as the northern headquarters of the Daily Express newspaper, the building is one of Manchester's most distinctive examples of interwar modernist architecture, often described as having strong Art Deco influences. Its use of glass, steel and clean horizontal lines represented a confident, forward-looking image of mass media and modern communication during the pre-war period.
Today, the Express Building has been repurposed as office accommodation, forming part of the wider regeneration of Great Ancoats Street and the eastern edge of Manchester city centre. The presence of pedestrians at street level highlights its continued role in everyday urban life, while the reflective façade mirrors the surrounding city, visually linking past and present.
The image captures how historic modernist architecture responds dynamically to summer light, and how Manchester's media heritage buildings have been adapted to contemporary use. It is well suited for editorial use covering architecture, urban regeneration, adaptive reuse, city-centre life, and the evolving relationship between light, material and the modern cityscape.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T3EFTC - Greenall's Brewery was founded by Thomas Greenall in 1762. Initially based in St Helens, the company established a second brewery at Wilderspool, south of Warrington in 1787.
It bought the Groves & Whitnall Brewery in Salford in 1961, Shipstone's Brewery in Nottingham in 1978[4] and Davenport's Brewery in Birmingham in 1986. For much of the 20th century, the company traded as Greenall Whitley & Co Limited. The St Helens brewery was demolished in the 1970s to make way for a new shopping centre. The Warrington brewery on the edge of Stockton Heath was bought by Bruntwood, renamed Wilderspool Business Park and is now let to office occupiers.
The company ceased brewing in 1991 to concentrate on running pubs and hotels.
In 1999, the tenanted wing of the Greenall's operation was sold to the Japanese bank, Nomura for £370 million and the main Greenall's operation, involving 770 pubs and 69 budget lodges, was sold to Scottish and Newcastle for £1.1billion. Greenalls started to focus its resources on its De Vere and Village Leisure hotel branding at that time.
In February 2005, Greenalls sold The Belfry to The Quinn Group for £186 million.
The Greenall family connection remained as Lord Daresbury, the descendant of the original founder, remained the non-executive chairman. This tie was severed in 2006 when Daresbury stepped down from the post and much of the family's interest was sold

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K5J0DY - An elegant town-centre pub, built in 1886 on the site of its predecessor, the Noah's Ark
the notable faience frontage dates from a remodelling of 1900 by local architect Fred T. Beck. On the wall of the smoke room are the plans showing the changes made in 1983 (Architects: David Horne Associates) when Allied Breweries converted the pub into one of the earliest of their Holt, Plant & Deakin' pubs these did include making an archway through the rear wall to give access to the smoke room and creating a third room at the rear.
It has an excellent ceramic exterior including the wording 'The Posada' on three tiled panels one on the fascia and two in vertical lettering on pilasters in each of the external recessed porches which have mosaic floors. Below the small-paned bowed window is a dado of golden yellow glazed brick and tiles. Both porches have a glazed brick and tiled dado in golden yellow with cream glazed brick above up to ceiling height with a dark yellow tiled frieze at the top and mosaic floors. Of the five main lower front windows the central three are now plain, which is not likely to have been the case when the pub was built. The leaded window in the right hand door is a modern replacement.
The public bar is a very special room with its tiled walls in orange-brown on the dado and cream above, original bar fittings including rare snob screens and is little altered since 1900. The left hand door leads into a vestibule that looks modern as does the panelling so it has been added later, possibly in 1983. The bar counter looks like the original 1900 one with panelled frontage the only changes being a 1960s/70s slanting piece of timber piece on the left for the present hatch
also, there is a cut right at the front right-hand end where the quadrant becomes straight, facing to the window which is where the hatch was originally.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RPGEN3 - The Printworks entertainment venue is located on the revamped Withy Grove site of the business premises of the 19th century newspaper proprietor Edward Hulton, established in 1873 and later expanded. Hulton's son Sir Edward Hulton expanded his father's newspaper interests and sold his publishing business based in London and Manchester to Lord Beaverbrook and Lord Rothermere when he retired in 1923. Most of the Hulton newspapers were sold again soon afterwards to the Allied Newspapers consortium formed in 1924 (renamed Kemsley Newspapers in 1943 and bought by Roy Thomson in 1959).
Earlier names of the buildings associated with publishing that were incorporated into the development include Withy Grove Printing House, the Chronicle Buildings, Allied House, Kemsley House, Thomson House and Maxwell House. Kemsley House on the corner of Withy Grove and Corporation Street was developed gradually from 1929 and became the largest newspaper printing house in Europe. The site housed a printing press until 1986. Robert Maxwell bought the property and subsequently closed it down The building was left unused for over a decade and fell derelict.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY7XR2 - Leeds Dock (formerly New Dock and also known as Clarence Dock between 2001 and 2012) is a mixed development with retail, office and leisure presence in central Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It has large residential population in waterside apartments.
New Dock was built in 1843 and was in service until 1990. The Royal Armouries Museum opened in 1996. New Dock was redeveloped as Clarence Dock, a £250 million mixed-use development between 2001 and 2007. The retail and leisure sector was launched on Saturday 11 October 2008 with fashion shows from celebrity fashion consultant and TV presenter Gok Wan. Leeds Dock now attracts around 1.5 million visitors a year although most of these are due to the proximity of the Royal Armouries Museum. Clarence Dock experienced a turbulent time since launch and is largely viewed as a failure in terms of achieving its initial vision.
It is located by the River Aire next to the Royal Armouries Museum, which faces onto Armouries Square. Leeds Dock's main shopping street, 'The Boulevard' radiates southbound from Armouries Square. Another focal point is 'The Anchorage' at the top of the dock. Clarence House is a 218-foot (66 m) tower containing 227 apartments and six retail units. On completion in April 2007, it became the eighth tallest building in Leeds but is now the twelfth tallest building.
Leeds Dock plays host to an annual Waterfront Festival each June with Dragon Boat Racing centred on Armouries Square.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HWM7 - August, always a mad busy crazy time in Edinburgh, during the festival and fringe, which seems to have grown even bigger than the tattoo and festival. There's no shortage of scaryness and satire here!.
Echo and Narcissus @ Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2012. From Rag and Bone Productions the Venue was theSpace on North Bridge. It was on until 18th August 2012 @ venue 36.
As the review says, Sometimes it is hard to tell image from reality until the illusion is shattered at the tap of a finger. Durham University's Rag & Bone Productions use an exciting combination of physical theatre, drama and dance to bring you this dark and innovative take on a classic Greek myth. The tragic story of Echo and Narcissus follows the disastrous consequences of a man falling in love with his own reflection. Rag & Bone successfully fuse visual spectacle with the best of storytelling to explore this tale of hurt, rejection, pride and vanity. Not to be missed!
Narcissus, is a young man blessed with untold beauty, who spurns all amorous advances, be they from citizens, nymphs, or just about anyone who can appreciate the beauty of the perfect human form. Meanwhile, talkative forest nymph Echo is tasked by Zeus to distract his wife Hera with incredible stories while he has an affair. Hera finds out and curses Echo to be able to repeat only the ends of sentences spoken to her (hence her name, Echo).
She runs into Narcissus in a forest, he rejects her fumbled echoes and she wastes away until she is nothing but a voice. Narcissus rejects one final advance of an older man by the name of Ameinus and mocks him for his futile attempts, daring him to kill himself. Ameinus does so, but curses Narcissus beforehand, resulting in Artemis bewitching Narcissus to fall in love with the next person he sees.
As he is hunting in the woods, he stops to rest by a quiet pool in a grassy clearing and falls in love with his own reflection. At a loss, he plunges in to reach the young man but drowns. A s

The Warburton Toll Bridge crosses the Manchester Ship Canal on the B5159 road, connecting Warrington with Trafford. There was an old stone bridge across the now dried up bed of the diverted River Mersey from 1863, there was an original toll for this.
The toll contributes towards the maintenance of the high level bridge style metal bridge and approach road. There is a limit of 3 tons on the bridge. The last time I crossed it was 12p. I believe a 25p ticket can be taken and used all day, a bit like the Thelwall ferry www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/4337673883/ . There is also an annual pass from the MSCC.
If you cross, tolls are charged from 7am till 10pm Monday to Friday, from 8am Saturday and 9am on a Sunday. At 10pm until the following morning there is no charge to cross. Apparently its one of the few remaining pre-motorway toll bridges in the UK and the only one in Greater Manchester. So a little bit of history.

Mr Gidman doing an excellent job in Stockton Heath at the dental practice.
In this day and age in western countries we should be able to eat ourselves out of a trip to the dentist
Foods that help muscles and bones also help teeth and gums. Breads and cereals are rich in vitamin B while fruits (an apple a day... ) and vegetables contain vitamin C, both of which contribute to healthy gum tissue. Lean meat, fish, and poultry provide magnesium and zinc for teeth. Some people recommend that teeth be brushed after every meal and at bedtime, and flossed at least once per day, preferably at night before sleep. For some people, flossing might be recommended after every meal.
Some foods may protect against cavities. Fluoride is a primary protector against dental cavities. Fluoride makes the surface of teeth more resistant to acids during the process of remineralisation. Drinking fluoridated water is recommended by some dental professionals while others say that using toothpaste alone is enough.
Milk and cheese are also rich in calcium and phosphate, and may also encourage remineralisation. All foods increase saliva production, and since saliva contains buffer chemicals this helps to stabilize the pH to near 7 (neutral) in the mouth. Foods high in fiber may also help to increase the flow of saliva. Sugar-free chewing gum stimulates saliva production, and helps to clean the surface of the teeth.
