Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJ3YRP - Dove Holes is a village in the High Peak district of Derbyshire, England. It has a population of about 1,200 (2001), shown in the 2011 Census as being included in the population of Chapel-en-le-Frith. It straddles the A6 road approximately three miles north of Buxton and three miles south of Chapel-en-le-Frith. Trains run from Dove Holes railway station into Manchester.
Residents of the village live either in the village or on outlying farms. There are around six farms in the village and many more within the boundaries of the parish. There are also large limestone quarries that, over the years, have made an important contribution to the development and economy of the village. Additionally, there are several businesses. There are two public houses, one of which offers accommodation. There is a daily milk delivery service and a mobile library every fortnight. There is a church, Methodist chapel and a community centre. The village lies on the fringe of the Peak District National Park.
In 1650, a General Survey of the Manor of High Peak was made to assess the property of the late King Charles. This recorded that people were burning limestone around the village and that there were 14 kilns thereabouts, the burnt lime (quicklime) being slaked and used by farmers to condition the soil in their fields. At that time, lime kilns could be built and demolished without authority.
With the coming of the Industrial Revolution, and the opening of the Peak Forest Tramway in 1796, the limestone quarries were commercialised. The first of these was at nearby Loads Knowl and others quickly followed along Dove Holes Dale. Undoubtedly, the opening of the Peak Forest Tramway and the consequent expansion of commercial limestone quarries contributed greatly to the expansion of the village. For the first time, there was an outlet for limestone in Manchester via the Peak Forest Tramway, Bugsworth Basin, the Peak Forest Canal and the Ashton Canal.

By that time, regulations against excessive gluttony and debauchery during the days before carnival had been established.
In the beginning, the Mainz carnival was non-political. The activities of the carnivalistic organizations (MCV, Ranzengarde, Rosenmontagszug, sessions) had been watched closely by the grand ducal authorities, but generally allowed to continue

It is believed that food similar to haggis?perishable offal quickly cooked inside an animal's stomach, all conveniently available after a hunt?was eaten from ancient times.
Although the name hagws or hagese was first recorded in England c. 1430, the dish is considered traditionally of Scottish origin. It is even the national dish as a result of Scots poet Robert Burns' poem Address to a Haggis of 1786. Haggis is traditionally served with neeps and tatties, boiled and mashed separately, and a dram (a glass of Scotch whisky), especially as the main course of a Burns supper.

The Lord Reid Building, behind 142 High Street, is within an enclosed court and accessed via a pend known as New Assembly Close. It houses the Faculty's Consultation Centre and is named after James Scott Cumberland Reid, Lord Advocate from 1941-45 and Dean of Faculty from 1945-48. He was also an MP.
Such was his ability, Lord Reid was appointed a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, a judge in the House of Lords, straight from the Bar, without any intervening judicial experience. He went on to win acclaim as one of most outstanding judges of the 20th Century.
The building is Category A listed and dates from the early 19th Century, although there is an older section which had been the Edinburgh Assembly Rooms and the King's Arms Tavern. Designed by James Gillespie Graham, it was the head office of the Commercial Bank of Scotland, and survived the 1824 Great Fire of Edinburgh. In 1894, it was taken over by the Scottish National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children and was a children's shelter until 1973.
Next, the building was home to the Edinburgh Wax Museum, the only waxworks in Scotland, drawing 230,000 visitors a year at its peak. In the late 1980s, the Faculty bought 142 as it has become known to Advocates. The building was opened officially by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1994.
The Mackenzie Building (left), in Old Assembly Close at 172 High Street, has Category B status, and takes its name from Sir George Mackenzie of Rosehaugh, Dean of Faculty from 1682-90 and founder of the Advocates Library. He served as Lord Advocate during the rule of Charles II and earned a reputation as a persecutor of Covenanters, who called him Bluidy Mackenzie.
The original property in the close was destroyed in the fire, and the building was erected in 1840 as a George Heriot Foundation School. The architect was Alexander Black

In Edinburgh's Royal Mile, just off the High Street, striking south, is a lane known as Covenant Close. This was named from the fact that one of the copies of the National Covenant was teken here from Greyfriars Kirkyard to collect signatures from other residents in the city. The copy was on display in one of the houses in the lane, and signatures were gathered on it.

Mr Carter said on Thursday he was notified by the Home Office that the Fir Grove hotel in his Warrington South constituency would 'become an asylum centre the following day' and said no talks were held with the council.
He added: It's in the middle of a residential area, less than 200 yards from a primary school.
I'm sure (Mr Jenrick) would agree with me that it's simply not acceptable for the Home Office to steamroll ahead on a decision like this without the necessary consultation with local residents.
After Conservative former minister Paul Maynard raised concerns about the use of a hotel in his Blackpool North and Cleveleys constituency, Mr Jenrick said: I appreciate that Blackpool is one of those areas that has borne a disproportionate burden from this issue for a long time.
So if there is a way we can ensure that individuals are dispersed from Blackpool more swiftly than other parts of the country, then I'd be happy to look into that.
Mr Jenrick added 'deterrence' has to be part of the UK's approach, suggesting good-quality hotels could act as a 'pull factor' for people thinking of crossing the Channel.
The population at the Manston Migrant Processing Centre is back below 1,600 with 'over 2,300 people being placed in onward accommodation', Mr Jenrick said.

Mr Carter yesterday held a number of meetings to understand the legal options available to Warrington Borough Council, which also opposes the decision.
He said: I held a number of meetings yesterday to understand the legal options available to the Council in terms of challenging decisions taken by the owners of the hotel and to gain more information from the Home Office and their plans for this site.
In discussions with Home Office officials, I have been advised that the cohort planned for accommodation this site will be families with children. Prior to arriving in Warrington the refugees will have been processed at centres elsewhere. The hotel has 54 rooms and a maximum occupancy of 79 guests in total.
The advice received from Kings Counsel was that an immediate legal challenge to this decision to use this site for Asylum Seekers would be unlikely to succeed, not least due the incredibly short timescales before the asylum seekers arrive in Warrington and the location of the owners of the site. Other local authorities are however pursuing legal routes related to planning legislation and a change of use requirements, which I am monitoring.

OPENING an asylum centre at a Warrington hotel without consulting residents was 'simply not acceptable'.
Warrington South MP Andy Carter raised his concerns in the House of Commons on Monday afternoon during an urgent debate on the migrant crisis.
He was among a large number of MPs grilling immigration minister Robert Jenrick on the fall out of the problems at the Manston Migrant Centre in Kent.

It's one of the most intricate canal networks in the world. The hub of the BCN is the bustling city centre junction at Gas Street Basin. Here, colourful boats and historic canal architecture sit side-by-side with vibrant modern restaurants, cafes and bars. The basin is in the heart of Birmingham's cosmopolitan nightlife and shopping districts. The mainlines and city centre canals are busy with boaters, walkers and cyclists.
However, elsewhere on the BCN, you can really get away from it all on winding suburban canals and some surprisingly rural branches. In the northern waters of the BCN, there are some rarely-explored waterways that are truly off the beaten track.
The canals were the life-blood of Victorian Birmingham and the Black Country. At their height, they were so busy that gas lighting was installed beside the locks to permit round-the-clock operation. Boats were built without cabins for maximum carrying capacity, and a near-tidal effect was produced as swarms of narrowboats converged on the Black Country collieries at the same time every day

Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. However traditional themes such as William III of England and the Battle of the Boyne, the Battle of the Somme and the 36th Ulster Division are equally common

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JGXP0E - Santander Cycles (formerly Barclays Cycle Hire) is a public bicycle hire scheme in London in the United Kingdom. The scheme's bicycles are popularly known as Boris Bikes, after Boris Johnson who was Mayor of London when the scheme began operating.
The operation of the scheme was initially contracted by Transport for London (TfL) to Serco. Bikes and docking stations are provided by 8D Technologies. The scheme is sponsored, with Santander UK being the main sponsor from April 2015. Barclays Bank was the first sponsor, from 2010 to March 2015.
Credit for developing and enacting the scheme has been a source of debate. Johnson has taken credit for the plan, although the initial concept was announced by his predecessor Ken Livingstone, during the latter's term in office. Livingstone said that the programme would herald a cycling and walking transformation in London and Johnson said that he hoped the bikes would become as common as black cabs and red buses in the capital.
A study showed cyclists using the scheme are three times less likely to be injured per trip than cyclists in London as a whole, possibly due to motorists giving cycle hire users more road space than they do other cyclists, although trips by hire bike users seemed to be much shorter on average. Customer research in 2013 showed that 49 per cent of Cycle Hire members say that the scheme has prompted them to start cycling in London.
As of July 2022, more than 111.2 million journeys had been made using the cycles, with the record for cycle hires in a single day being 73,000.
In October 2022, TfL introduced new e-bikes to the scheme, the first docked e-bikes in London

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG39NX - Early in his career, in 1896, Mackintosh met Catherine Cranston (widely known as Kate Cranston or simply Miss Cranston), an entrepreneurial local business woman who was the daughter of a Glasgow tea merchant and a strong believer in temperance.
The temperance movement was becoming increasingly popular in Glasgow at the turn of the century and Miss Cranston had conceived the idea of a series of art tearooms, venues where people could meet to relax and enjoy non-alcoholic refreshments in a variety of different rooms within the same building. This proved to be the start of a long working relationship between Miss Cranston and Mackintosh. Between 1896 and 1917 he designed and re-styled interiors in all four of her Glasgow tearooms, often in collaboration with his wife Margaret MacDonald.
Mackintosh's redesigned external facade was a carefully considered asymmetric, abstractly modelled composition with shallow curves on some areas of the surface, and varying depths of recesses to windows and the main entrance. The composition respected the urban context of the neighbouring buildings, matching the major cornice lines and heights of adjoining buildings, whilst still exploring emerging ideas of Art Nouveau and the modern movement.
The ground floor entrance door is placed far to the left of a wide band of fenestration, both of which are recessed below the first-floor level, the location of the Room de Luxe. To emphasise the importance of this room, Mackintosh designed a full width bay window, projecting the facade outwards with a gentle curve. The two storeys above this featured a more regular pattern of fenestration with three individual windows per floor, recessed to different degrees. The asymmetry of the composition was continued by widening the left side windows and creating another gentle curve in this part of the facade, extending through both storeys. This repeated the curved form of the first floor and emphasised the heavily recessed entrance to the building

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED3YP - The Old Tolbooth was the main municipal building in the city of Edinburgh, Scotland for more than 400 years. The medieval structure, which was located at the west end of the Luckenbooths on the High Street in the Old Town, was first established in the 14th century by royal charter. Over the years it served a variety of purposes such as housing the Burgh Council, early meetings of the Estates of Scotland and the Court of Session. The Tolbooth was also the burgh's main gaol where public execution and torture were routinely conducted.
In 1817 the building, which had been rebuilt and renovated several times, was demolished.

On a very damp day in Manchester, surveyors, solicitors, Peel employees and MediaCityUK occupiers including ITV, BBC, Nuffield Health and WYG turned out to race in three gripping head-to-head heats which culminated in an exciting grand finale.
Before the racing began, the guests were treated to a canap?? reception in Damson MediaCityUK overlooking the piazza.
The weary but triumphant team from dock10, the studio operators, were presented with the glass trophy, medals and champagne and then celebrated with all the other participants and other participants at On the 7th, a private members bar located in the Blue Tower at MediaCityUK.
The losing team of local SMEs which included the Rugby Football League, Carbon Digital and Glue were presented with the wooden paddle award and a jovial hint to try harder next year.
The aim of the event was to raise awareness of the on-going activity at the vibrant MediaCityUK destination and all it offers, from offices to restaurants, retail and leisure in an impressive waterside location.
Liza Marco, Property Manager at Peel said, Peel's first Dragon Boat Racing Event at MediaCityUK was a huge success and it was a pleasure to see over 250 people take part in a fun, networking event which showcased MediaCityUK's amenities. We decided to hold an event at MediaCityUK following two successful Dragon Boat Events A Division of at Peel's Princes Dock development in Liverpool. We are looking forward to hosting the rematch next year!

Jud Charlton pictured here is a London actor, comedian and ventiliquist, with his alta-ego Philis. A sort of Camden Chucky on sulphate.
Jud has featured in films like Chemical Wedding and has played Ian Dury in 'ABFCAP - The Life and Rhymes of Ian Dury' , playing one of my teen favourites. I still have a gold vinyl 'New Boots and Panties' up in the loft. Jud Charlton, walked out over alterations made to the script by the comedian Chris Langham after a dissagreement.

Picky with your food? Alegies, Vegetarian? August, always a mad busy crazy time in Edinburgh, during the festival and fringe, which seems to have grown even bigger than the tattoo and festival. There's plenty of vegetable based humour here, its a broad church!.
At venue 203, The Princes Mall, just next to Waverley bridge and railway station, this show was on throughout the festival 4-25th August, as part of the free fringe.
The question raised is 'Wheres the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?' and more importantly 'Why did he pick it'?

Inspired by the likes of Victoria Wood and Dawn French, writer Sarah Adams has formed new theatre company By The Slice to produce a cringe-worthy yet affectionate romantic comedy alongside her film producer sister Becky. What better way to get over your latest dating disaster than to be able to laugh at someone else's ludicrous misfortunes? Taking all of the available Manchester cast with them, By The Slice will also be introducing some new faces as well as new-to-theatre director Dan Wilson whose credits include directing Sir Ian McKellen and Status Quo in Coronation Street, EastEnders, BBC's Land Girls and 32 Brinkburn Street, and feature film The Roundabout.

Narcissus, is a young man blessed with untold beauty, who spurns all amorous advances, be they from citizens, nymphs, or just about anyone who can appreciate the beauty of the perfect human form. Meanwhile, talkative forest nymph Echo is tasked by Zeus to distract his wife Hera with incredible stories while he has an affair. Hera finds out and curses Echo to be able to repeat only the ends of sentences spoken to her (hence her name, Echo).
She runs into Narcissus in a forest, he rejects her fumbled echoes and she wastes away until she is nothing but a voice. Narcissus rejects one final advance of an older man by the name of Ameinus and mocks him for his futile attempts, daring him to kill himself. Ameinus does so, but curses Narcissus beforehand, resulting in Artemis bewitching Narcissus to fall in love with the next person he sees.
As he is hunting in the woods, he stops to rest by a quiet pool in a grassy clearing and falls in love with his own reflection. At a loss, he plunges in to reach the young man but drowns. A small Narcissus flower is washed up on the shore afterwards, taking its name from him.

A show which ran at The Space on The Mile, Venue 39 (80 The High St), August 3rd to the 17th by The Terrible Edgar Theatre Co.
Andrew Leask reviewed it like this: It\u2019s been hours since I left the venue, and I\u2019m still thinking about this play. It takes a complex, metatextual concept \u2013 characters in a play have become self-aware \u2013 and plays with it, delivering an adaptation of \u2018Oedipus\u2019 that is as thought-provoking as it is engaging.
The chorus want to hide the horrible truth from Oedipus, but are compelled to follow the script
at times comical, it builds to a dark, fittingly tragic climax, throwing the audience\u2019s need for tragedy and catharsis back at them. If you\u2019re interested in tragedy, this will leave you with a mental itch that you can\u2019t quite scratch: the mark of exciting, provocative theatre.
Oedipus fulfilled a prophecy that said he would kill his father and marry his mother, and thereby brought disaster on his city and family. The story of Oedipus is the subject of Sophocles's tragedy Oedipus the King, which was followed by Oedipus at Colonus and then Antigone. Together, these plays make up Sophocles's three Theban plays. Oedipus represents two enduring themes of Greek myth and drama: the flawed nature of humanity and an individual's powerlessness against the course of destiny in a harsh universe.

Part of the Free Fringe, the New Zealand company Trick of the Light Theatre has travelled across the world to tell a wonderful story of maps and roads that exist only if you know where to look for them. And if you follow them, the consequences may be more real than you expected.
The starting point of the story is the paper roads of New Zealand \u2013 roads that were built and drawn in on several maps but never materialised as the money was missing. Conjuring up a visual imagery that switches between episodic temporaries in refreshing ways, The Road that Wasn\u2019t There imagines what would happen if one did indeed follow one of these paper roads off the edge of the real world.
The story centres on Maggie, who as a young girl follows one of these paper roads leading off behind the graveyard on her way to work for her family. She finds everything she has always wanted, but is drawn further and further away from the real world and into this wondrous world where time stands still. Performed through acting, puppetry and shadow theatre, the story is woven into a contemporary plot where her grown-up son is moving her to an old people\u2019s home to protect her from her fantasies. As the two stories unfold, we learn something both about reality and about responsibility, love, and the changes that have occurred between generations.

In January 1693, at Corrie Arklet farm near Inversnaid, he married Mary Helen MacGregor of Comar (1671-1745), who was born at Leny Farm, Strathyre. The couple had four sons: James, Ranald, Coll and Robert (known as Robin Oig or Young Rob). They also adopted a cousin named Duncan.

'Because the Night' is a song by the Patti Smith Group, written by Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith which was released as a single in 1978, taken from Smith's album Easter. The song was a hit, rising to #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and helping propel sales of Easter to mainstream success \u2013 even as Smith was deciding to retire from a life of constant touring. The song remains one of the best known of Smith's catalog.
In 1987, 'Because the Night' by Patti Smith Group was ranked number 116 on NME magazine's list of 'The Top 150 Singles of All Time'
The original song was recorded by Bruce Springsteen during sessions for his Darkness on the Edge of Town album. He was not satisfied with it
the Patti Smith Group was working on Easter in the studio next door, with engineer/producer Jimmy Iovine working on both albums.
Lovine gave Smith a tape of the song, she recast it, and it was included on Easter, becoming the first single released from that album. Though it was never released on any of Springsteen's studio albums, in concert beginning with his Darkness Tour Springsteen would often perform the song with his own lyrics. The song was first performed live (with Patti Smith) at CBGB's in New York City on December 30, 1977.
Until the 2010 release of Springsteen's box set The Promise, which included the original recording from the Darkness on the Edge of Town sessions, the only commercially released recording of a Springsteen version of the song was in the 1986 box set Live/1975\u201385, where Smith was listed as co-writer.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BNKK50 - East Lancashire Railway is a 12.5-mile (20 km) heritage railway line in North West England which runs between Heywood, Greater Manchester and Rawtenstall in Lancashire. There are intermediate stations at Bury Bolton Street, Burrs Country Park, Summerseat and Ramsbottom, with the line crossing the border into Rossendale serving Irwell Vale and Rawtenstall. Before closure, the line terminated at Bacup.
The heritage line is now just over 12 miles (19 km) long and has a mainline connection with the national railway network at Castleton, just beyond Heywood. The ELR is planning to extend the running line to Castleton in the future.
Overview
Passenger services between Bury and Rawtenstall were withdrawn by British Rail on 3 June 1972. Coal services to Rawtenstall ended in 1980 and formal closure of the line followed in 1982. The East Lancashire Railway Trust reopened the line on 25 July 1987. The initial service operated between Bury and Ramsbottom, via Summerseat. In 1991, the service was extended northwards from Ramsbottom to reach Rawtenstall, via Irwell Vale. However, two original stations on the line, closed to passengers by BR in 1972, have not reopened, Ewood Bridge & Edenfield and Stubbins. The latter was the junction of the lines to Accrington and Rossendale although there were no platforms serving these lines.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BNKK6D - East Lancashire Railway is a 12.5-mile (20 km) heritage railway line in North West England which runs between Heywood, Greater Manchester and Rawtenstall in Lancashire. There are intermediate stations at Bury Bolton Street, Burrs Country Park, Summerseat and Ramsbottom, with the line crossing the border into Rossendale serving Irwell Vale and Rawtenstall. Before closure, the line terminated at Bacup.
The heritage line is now just over 12 miles (19 km) long and has a mainline connection with the national railway network at Castleton, just beyond Heywood. The ELR is planning to extend the running line to Castleton in the future.
Overview
Passenger services between Bury and Rawtenstall were withdrawn by British Rail on 3 June 1972. Coal services to Rawtenstall ended in 1980 and formal closure of the line followed in 1982. The East Lancashire Railway Trust reopened the line on 25 July 1987. The initial service operated between Bury and Ramsbottom, via Summerseat. In 1991, the service was extended northwards from Ramsbottom to reach Rawtenstall, via Irwell Vale. However, two original stations on the line, closed to passengers by BR in 1972, have not reopened, Ewood Bridge & Edenfield and Stubbins. The latter was the junction of the lines to Accrington and Rossendale although there were no platforms serving these lines.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5743031658 - 'Auden plays in a band down in Portobello, east of Edinburgh which is a bit of a trendy up-coming neighbourhood (at least thats what the ESPC estate agents are saying). His band composes and plays material similar to Pendulum.
His musical style for the foot of the Royal Mile is more blues, Led Zeppelin, Eagles and classic rock however. He looks the part with his battered old bass.
The Tass lies on the High Street section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile, opposite the equally well known World's End. If you look at the cobbles in the High Street here you can see the outline in brass of the Netherbow Port, once the eastern gateway of the City of Edinburgh.
The Tass is named after one of Robert Burns' songs, The Silver Tassie (or 'goblet') and the Tass seeks to remember Scotland's greatest bard with a range of memorabilia relating to him. Don't worry though, this isn't overdone and it would be quite possible to enjoy the ambiance without being overwhelmed by the theme.
Much more obvious is the Tass's role as a focus for traditional and folk music, with live performances taking place most evenings. A choice of real ales and malt whiskies is on offer, and when I popped in the food looks fairly good too.

Following a fire, which completely destroyed the pavilion, the pier was rebuilt at a cost of ?39 million and reopened on 23 October 2010.
at 01:35 BST on 28 July 2008, a fire at the foot of the north tower on the shoreward (eastern) end of the pavilion triggered the privately monitored fire alarm,[10] but the Essex-based alarm monitoring company were unable to contact the key-holder by mobile phone and no further action was taken.[11] It was not until 06:46 BST that the Avon Fire and Rescue Service was notified. It deployed 13 fire engines, special appliances, and more than 85 firefighters to tackle the blaze,[10] but the building was soon destroyed.

Robert Tinker, a Grand Pier employee, was later praised by the fire service as he braved the extreme intensity of the heat from the flames to rush around the side of the building to remove several gas canisters which had been stored within the premises, had these not been removed the fire service claimed that the fire could have been much worse, with the possibility of local residents and traders needing to be evacuated. Preliminary investigations suggested that the fire started due to a number of deep fat fryers which had been located within the area pavilion, however after further investigation this was later ruled out, as was arson. Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4538157205 - 'The patron saint of Edinburgh was St Giles, and it is to he that the building is dedicated. St. Giles was the patron saint of cripples and lepers, of which I would expect there were plenty around the middle ages when at peak popularity. These were the premier league stars of their day. His feast day is celebrated on 1st September. St Giles, a 7th century hermit (and, later, abbot) who lived in France, became the patron of both town and church was probably due to the ancient ties between Scotland and France, a popular ally in the resistance to the larger neighbour in the south.
The building has a distinctive crown steeple, popular in Scotland in medieval times. There are a few in England too and one can be seen on the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Although one of Edinburgh's religious focal points for approximately 900 years, the High Kirk of Edinburgh was only the seat of bishops between 1635-38 and 1661-1689. Thus 'high Kirk' is a more accurate title than the common label of cathedral. Presbyterianism was born here
The building is irregular as it has been added to at various stages over the last 900 years or so. Many chapels were added, many by craft guilds or wealthy merchants of the town.
In 1559, John Knox led the Lords of the Congregation into Edinburgh and was elected minister of Edinburgh. He played a principal role in establishing the styles of worship and administration that were to be accepted throughout the country. Knox served as Minister at St Giles' until 1572. The Reformers partitioned the interior of St Giles', dividing the congregation of Edinburgh and allowing the building to be used for a wide range of purposes. During the next 300 years the building housed a police station, a fire station, a school and a coal store. The Scottish guillotine, the 'Maiden', was housed in the church, and in one corner was a prison used for 'harlots and whores'. The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland met in the building, as did the Parliament and the Town Council.
Walking around the interior it is easy to feel that many old ghosts inhabit its fabric. James Graham, Marquess of Montrose, and Archibald Campbell, Marquess of Argyll were just two notable men executed for a clash of faith with the ruling classes. Both are commemorated within St Giles.

It is a science centre in Edinburgh, Scotland and a popular visitor attraction and venue for exhibitions etc in the city. It is a stitched joiner of four images.
From its doors on the third floor, the Scottish Parliament and Holyrood Palace can be seen. It opened in 1999 and was a UK Millennium Commission project. It is within the walls of the the William Younger Centre, which is a distinctive castle-esque landmark building.
Dynamic Earth's architects were Michael Hopkins and Partners. The centre concentrates on earth science and the forces that have shaped the earth.

Sons in Cuddington, Northwich, Cheshire UK. It makes a refreshing change to visit a real butcher, rather than the pre-packaged and shrink wrapped conveyor belt plastic meat from the supermarket, although in In English, the name Lyulph is a variant of Lyulf: A compound of the Old English words for flame and wolf.
He was named after Arthur Lyulph Stanley who was a relative of his father and Liberal elected MP for the mainly rural parliamentary constituancy of Eddisbury. Arthur awarded KCMG (14 September 1875 \u2013 22 August 1931), also 5th Baron Stanley of Alderley and 4th Baron Eddisbury, was an English nobleman and Governor of Victoria from 1914 to 1920. Thus a suitable role model to name your child after I guess. The name Lyulph has origins in Scandinavia.
The butcher shop in Cuddington has a long history and in the 1930's there was a fatality when a butcher's boy, Les Watson (brother of Joan Underwood) was involved in a collision with a mail van while riding his delivery bicycle on Swan Hill.
If you would like to visit the shop for excellent local meat, excellent homemade pies and sausages etc, it is at 18 Warrington Road, give them a call on 01606 883162 for opening hours.

A truly compact place awash with old Tay ferry crossing timetables, metal signs and Beer/Whisky mirrors. A true one off and one of my watering holes whenever I get the chance to pop into the old town. Unfortunatly no longer has Cressers brush shop opposite.

The crofting and fishing village lies on the eastern shore of Loch Slapin, 5 miles (7 km) southwest of Broadford (An t-??th Leathann), on the road to Elgol (Ealaghol). There is a mixture of Victorian white-washed cottages and modern flat-pack houses. The village boasts good views of Blaven and Loch Slapin.
Torrin sits on Durness limestone. There is an abundance of trees and varied plant flora, including more than a dozen species of orchids. Much of the area is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation.
There are five working crofts in Torrin with cattle and sheep. The common grazing extends north onto the surrounding red granite hills Beinn Dearg Mh?r (709m) and Beinn Dearg Bheag (584m) and beyond the head of Loch Slapin .

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3811346324 - 'This is on the road south out of Northwich towards Davenham. It probably dates from before 1936 when Leftwich civil parish ceased to exist. All of its population was transferred to the civil parish of Davenham further south. After the second world war, the same area was annexed to Northwich in 1955, following the post-war construction of a large housing estate at Leftwich Green by Northwich Urban District Council. this housing estate is now opposite this old and forgotten cast metal mile post.

The Merchant City is a district of the city of Glasgow. The area was first formed during the 18th century to house the wealthy merchant 'tobacco lords' who prospered shipping, amongst other things, tobacco, sugar and tea to the Clyde and fabricated goods to the Americas at this time many classical villas were built in the area. The name 'Merchant City' was coined during 1980's 'Glasgows Smiles Better' regeneration. Historically the area was called 'the tron' or 'cross' or simply by most Glaswegians 'the toun' or 'the town'. An annual Merchant City Festival takes place around the last week of September attracting tens of thousands to the area with a multi-arts programme.

A draped standing figure of Alexander holding onto his horse Bucephalus which is unharnessed and rearing. The satue is on a corniced, bow-ended ashlar plinth. It was moved from St Andrew Square to its present site in 1916.

Maybe a mantra for our current troubled times?
Perhaps we should worry about our carbon footprint, walk a bit more rather than drive as much? Possibly eat less supermarket food, consume in season and cut down on our food air miles ? Think more about our neighbours, come to think of it, do you even know your neighbours? Some of our prejudges should maybe be put aside, the world's more interesting when it's diverse.
I must have passed this on Orford road coming into Padgate, Warrington Cheshire a few dozen times. To stop at the traffic lights makes you consider these four words a little more deeply. Next time you wait there to follow the A50 or to go to Birchwood following the A574, consider these words.

The distillery was founded by the Laird of Jura, Archibald Campbell in 1810. The distillery fell into disrepair but was restored in 1884. Around 1900 it was again in disuse and dismantled. In the 1950s two local estate owners, Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley-Smith keen to revive the local economy had the distillery rebuilt and expanded by the architects Lothian, Barclay, Jarvis & Boys with input from whisky and distillery expert William Delm??-Evans

Its distinctive crown steeple is a prominent feature of the city skyline, at about a third of the way down the Royal Mile which runs from the Castle to Holyrood Palace. The church has been one of Edinburgh's religious focal points for approximately 900 years. The present church dates from the late 14th century, though it was extensively restored in the 19th century, and is protected as a category A listed building.[1] Today it is sometimes regarded as the Mother Church of Presbyterianism. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Giles, who is the patron saint of Edinburgh, as well as of cripples and lepers, and was a very popular saint in the Middle Ages. It is the Church of Scotland parish church for part of Edinburgh's Old Town. The current Minister (since 1973) of St Giles' is the Very Reverend Dr Gilleasbuig Macmillan

St Giles' was only a cathedral in its formal sense (i.e. the seat of a bishop) for two periods during the 17th century (1635?1638 and 1661?1689), when episcopalianism, backed by the Crown, briefly gained ascendancy within the Kirk (see Bishops' Wars). In the mediaeval period, prior to the Reformation, Edinburgh had no cathedral as the royal burgh was part of the Diocese of St Andrews, under the Bishop of St Andrews whose episcopal seat was St Andrew's Cathedral.
For most of its post-Reformation history the Church of Scotland has not had bishops, dioceses, or cathedrals. As such, the use of the term cathedral today carries no practical meaning. The High Kirk title is older, being attested well before the building's brief period as a cathedral.
