Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM987T - A tight, documentary close-up of a private car park enforcement notice in Stockport, photographed through a green metal security fence. The sign uses large, high-contrast red lettering on a pale background and is designed for immediate impact, with the key message CLAMPED dominating the lower half. Above it, the full warning reads PLEASE NOTE and NON PAYMENT OF CAR PARKING WILL RESULT IN YOUR CAR BEING CLAMPED, making the threat and the trigger condition clearly legible at a glance. The framing and the fence lines create a slightly confrontational, controlled feel, reinforcing the theme of restriction and enforcement on private land.
The image works well for editorial stories about parking enforcement, private car parks, deterrent signage, and the everyday tensions between motorists and property owners. It can also illustrate wider debates about the fairness and regulation of clamping and parking penalties, consumer awareness of rules, and the importance of prominent signage in disputes. The utilitarian setting, visible fixings, and the barrier fence suggest a backstreet or service-area car park rather than a polished retail environment, adding an authentic, gritty urban texture suitable for news, transport, and local business coverage in Greater Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM98R0 - A documentary street-level view of the exterior of Luke Lister Blacksmiths and Fabrication Engineers at 173 Heaton Lane in Stockport, photographed beneath the shadow of the railway viaduct. The scene is anchored by a traditional, old-fashioned hanging sign mounted from ornate iron brackets, with clearly readable wording including LUKE LISTER, BLACKSMITHS, and FABRICATION ENGINEERS, plus a printed telephone number. The sign instantly communicates a long-established craft and engineering trade, the sort of practical, hands-on workshop that still survives in pockets of Greater Manchester.
The building itself reinforces that story: weathered red brickwork, simple industrial windows protected by metal bars, and a robust workshop entrance that looks built for hard use. The narrow pavement and close street frontage create a slightly enclosed, gritty urban feel, typical of older transport corridors where small firms historically clustered near rail lines and commercial routes. Even without seeing the inside, the details suggest the working reality of bespoke metalwork, repairs, fabrication jobs, and the quieter but essential skills that support local construction, heritage restoration, and everyday business needs.
Visually, it is a strong image for themes like British craftsmanship, skilled trades, UK manufacturing, independent businesses, and industrial heritage. The combination of readable signage, brick textures, and the implied railway setting makes it useful for editorial features about traditional workshops in modern cities, as well as general illustration for blacksmithing and fabrication services in Northern England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6BA - The large-scale mechanical sculpture Ozzy the Bull, photographed inside Birmingham New Street Station at Birmingham B2 4ND. Originally created as a centrepiece for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the bull has since become one of the city's most recognisable contemporary landmarks.
Constructed from metal components and exposed mechanical detailing, Ozzy references Birmingham's industrial heritage while presenting a playful, accessible symbol of the city's modern identity. The bull was designed to embody strength, energy and resilience, qualities associated both with sport and with Birmingham's historic role as a centre of manufacturing and engineering.
Following the Games, Ozzy was installed at New Street Station, one of the UK's busiest transport hubs, ensuring continued public engagement and visibility. Positioned within the vast interior concourse of the station, the sculpture interacts with daily commuter flows, tourists and shoppers, transforming a functional transit space into a site of cultural encounter.
The presence of Ozzy inside the station reflects wider debates around the legacy of major sporting events, particularly how temporary symbols and installations can be repurposed to deliver long-term cultural and civic value. The sculpture has become a popular meeting point and photographic subject, reinforcing Birmingham's use of public art as a tool for place-making and identity.
Photographed in daylight with people and retail units visible, the image offers strong editorial value for themes including sporting legacy, urban regeneration, public art, city branding and contemporary life in British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAXE7 - This image shows a close up view of a cast iron inscription reading Castlefield, formed into a metal surface that has developed a rich rusted patina over time. The lettering is characteristic of Victorian industrial typography, designed to be both durable and legible within the heavy engineering environments that once defined this part of Manchester.
Castlefield is widely recognised as one of the most historically significant industrial areas in the city, closely associated with canals, railways, warehouses, and early transport infrastructure that supported Manchester's growth during the industrial revolution. Cast iron was a defining material of this period, used extensively for bridges, viaducts, columns, and signage because of its strength, mouldability, and relative affordability.
The surface corrosion visible in the image reflects decades of exposure to weather and urban conditions, creating a textured finish that is now valued as part of the area's historic character. Rather than being removed, such patina is often retained in conservation and regeneration projects, where material ageing is seen as evidence of authenticity and continuity.
Taken in natural daylight, the photograph functions both as a documentary record of industrial heritage and as a strong abstract study of texture, lettering, and material decay. It illustrates how small details within Manchester's historic infrastructure help tell the wider story of the city's industrial past and its ongoing relationship with conservation, regeneration, and place identity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCDJ2H - This image shows Town Swing Bridge spanning the River Weaver in the heart of Northwich, Cheshire, captured on a calm summer evening with clear reflections mirrored in the still water below. The bridge forms an important crossing on Chester Way and is a distinctive local landmark, combining functional engineering with a strong sense of place within the historic town centre.
Behind the bridge, traditional black and white timber framed buildings sit alongside red brick riverside properties, reflecting Northwich's layered architectural history. The River Weaver has been central to the town's development for centuries, particularly through its role in salt production, navigation, and later industrial transport, shaping Northwich into one of Cheshire's key inland waterway towns.
The soft evening light, blue sky, and scattered clouds create a tranquil atmosphere, while the reflections in the river emphasise the symmetry between bridge, buildings, and water. The scene highlights the quieter, reflective character of Northwich beyond its industrial past, showing how historic infrastructure and waterways continue to define the town's identity.
This photograph works as strong editorial imagery illustrating British inland waterways, historic town centres, industrial heritage, and the everyday relationship between towns and their rivers in northern England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ348 - A metal sculpture of Charlie Chaplin stands beside the SS Nomadic in the Titanic Quarter of Belfast, Northern Ireland. The artwork is located close to Titanic Belfast on Olympic Way, postcode BT3 9EP, within the regenerated docklands area that once formed part of the Harland and Wolff shipyard.
The statue depicts Charlie Chaplin in his iconic Little Tramp persona, complete with bowler hat and cane, rendered in cut steel with a weathered finish. Chaplin, one of the most influential figures in early cinema, symbolises the global cultural impact of silent film and twentieth-century popular entertainment.
The SS Nomadic, moored nearby, is the last remaining White Star Line ship and served as a tender to RMS Titanic, transporting passengers to and from the liner in Cherbourg. The proximity of the sculpture to the historic vessel highlights the Titanic Quarter's blend of maritime heritage, public art, and contemporary cultural tourism.
Photographed outdoors in daylight, with cobbled dock surfaces and harbour features visible, the image documents the reuse of historic docklands as a visitor destination. It is suitable for editorial use relating to film history, public art, tourism in Northern Ireland, maritime heritage, and the ongoing regeneration of Belfast's waterfront.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ35G - Titanic Belfast is a visitor attraction opened in 2012, a monument to Belfast's maritime heritage on the site of the former Harland & Wolff shipyard in the city's Titanic Quarter where the RMS Titanic was built. It tells the stories of the Titanic, which hit an iceberg and sank during her maiden voyage in 1912, and her sister ships RMS Olympic and HMHS Britannic. The building contains more than 12,000 square metres (130,000 sq ft) of floor space, most of which is occupied by a series of galleries, private function rooms and community facilities.
Titanic Belfast is owned by the Maritime Belfast Trust and commercially operated by Titanic Belfast Limited under a 25-year operator agreement which commenced in 2011.
The building is located on Queen's Island, an area of land at the entrance of Belfast Lough which was reclaimed from the water in the mid-19th century. It was used for many years by the shipbuilders Harland and Wolff, who built huge slipways and graving docks to accommodate the simultaneous construction of the Olympic and Titanic. The decline of shipbuilding in Belfast left much of the area derelict. Most of the disused structures on the island were demolished. A number of heritage features were given listed status, including the Olympic and Titanic slipways and graving docks, as well as the iconic Samson and Goliath cranes.
The derelict land was renamed the Titanic Quarter in 2001 and was earmarked for regeneration. Development rights over 185 acres was subsequently bought by Harcourt Developments at a cost of ?47 million, with 23 more acres set aside for a science park. The redevelopment plans included houses, hotels and entertainment amenities plus a maritime heritage museum and science centre. In 2005, plans were announced to build a museum dedicated to Titanic to attract tourists to the area, with the aim of completing it by 2012 to mark the centenary of Titanic's maiden voyage and sinking.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP346 - A close-up detail of a cast iron street grid bearing the raised lettering D M Moore & Sons Ltd, Coleraine, photographed in Coleraine, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The ironwork shows heavy surface rust and a distinctive grid pattern, highlighting both the durability and ageing of traditional cast iron street infrastructure.
D M Moore & Sons was a local engineering and manufacturing firm, and the stamped name reflects a period when municipal ironwork such as manhole covers, drainage grids, and utility plates were commonly produced by regional foundries rather than national suppliers. Such markings provide valuable evidence of local industrial history embedded within everyday urban environments.
Photographed in close-up, the image emphasises texture, colour, and typography, making it suitable for illustrating themes of industrial heritage, historic manufacturing, urban archaeology, and the material culture of towns in Northern Ireland. It documents how traces of Coleraine's industrial past remain visible in ordinary street surfaces, often overlooked in daily life. Visible Text :-

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RBN9EC - This image shows a traditional No Ball Games sign, commonly found on UK council and social housing estates, mounted against a dark brick wall. Such signs have been widely used by local authorities and housing providers to regulate play and reduce noise, damage, or nuisance in shared residential spaces.
The phrase No Ball Games has become a cultural shorthand in Britain, often referenced in discussions about urban childhood, public space, social housing management, and community control. While originally intended as a practical estate-management measure, the signage is now frequently used symbolically in media and policy commentary about youth provision, play spaces, and social behaviour.
The image is well suited to editorial and conceptual use covering social housing, council estates, urban life, local government policy, childhood and play, community rules, and British social history, as well as nostalgic or critical perspectives on post-war housing design and regulation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JCP - This photograph shows an Underwood Standard manual typewriter, a landmark design in the history of writing and office technology. Finished in black metal with exposed mechanical components, the machine features a full QWERTY keyboard, circular glass-topped keys, ribbon spools, and a paper roller platen, all characteristic of early twentieth-century typewriter engineering.
The Underwood Standard series, produced from the late nineteenth century onwards, was among the first typewriters to achieve widespread commercial success. Its open-frame design allowed typists to see the text as it was being typed, a significant innovation at the time that helped establish Underwood as a dominant name in offices, newsrooms, and government departments around the world.
The image highlights the tactile, mechanical nature of analogue writing technology, with visible levers, springs, and typebars arranged in a semi-circular basket beneath the carriage. The worn surfaces and patina suggest long-term use, reinforcing the sense of durability and craftsmanship associated with these machines.
Typewriters such as this played a central role in the development of modern administration, journalism, and literature, shaping how documents were produced long before the arrival of computers and word processors. Images like this are commonly used to illustrate themes of writing history, vintage office culture, industrial design, mechanical craftsmanship, and the evolution of communication technology.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMPF - This image shows a street name sign for Vinegar Alley in Walthamstow, East London, clearly displaying the E17 postcode. The sign is mounted on a metal pole and set against a backdrop of leafy green trees, giving a strong sense of place within a residential urban neighbourhood.
Street signs such as this are widely used in editorial, travel and lifestyle imagery to represent location, navigation and local identity. The distinctive street name adds character and curiosity, making the image suitable for illustrating themes of London neighbourhoods, wayfinding, urban exploration and everyday street detail.
Photographed in daylight during the warmer months, the surrounding foliage suggests a calm, well-established residential area. The simple composition focuses attention on the typography and wording of the sign, allowing it to be used as a contextual image for stories about place, community, property, local history or urban living in East London.
Vinegar Alley forms part of the wider streetscape of Walthamstow, an area that has become increasingly popular for its village atmosphere, green spaces and strong sense of local character within the capital.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3YB98 - More at https://rupertharris.com/products/police-call-posts-1
These cast-iron Police Call Posts were manufactured in the early 1930's by British Ericsson and sited throughout the City of London. The posts enabled the public to call the Police station and were also used for the station to contact the Policeman on the beat in that area. The red signal light would flash if the Constable were required to contact the station. The upper hatch opened to give access to the telephone
the middle door opened horizontally to provide a writing surface and lower door opened to a storage cupboard containing first aid kit and other useful items.
All the posts were decommissioned in the 1960's, when radio communication took over, and the majority of their contents were removed at that time.
A number of these posts were sold in the 1980's
The Liverpool Street Call Post had been particularly severely damaged by a vehicle collision. The fragments were painstakingly welded together and replacement cast-iron parts made only where absolutely necessary. All the posts were cleaned and repaired and their surfaces primed and filled where required to improve their surface quality.
Prior to restoration, the condition of the City's collection was in varying condition. Three of the posts, Aldgate, St Martin's le Grand and Walbrook, were in fairly good condition, however the remainder required full repair and replacement of missing parts.
The decision to remove cast-iron objects to the workshop for repair is one that requires careful judgement: as cast-iron is fragile, such objects should always be repaired in situ when possible to limit the risk of damage in transit. However, five of these posts could only be repaired off site, so having acquired consent, their temporary removal was carried out with great care.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA23AD - This image shows a close-up view of a cast iron street grid cover manufactured by A C Woodrow & Co of London. The grid features a distinctive diamond-shaped layout with raised square studs and embossed lettering reading A C Woodrow & Co and London, identifying the foundry responsible for its production.
Street grids and covers of this type form part of London's historic municipal infrastructure, typically used for drainage, ventilation, or access to underground services beneath pavements and roadways. The robust cast iron construction reflects the emphasis on durability and longevity characteristic of late nineteenth and early twentieth century urban engineering.
The surface displays heavy weathering, rust, and patina from prolonged exposure to foot traffic, vehicles, and the elements. These marks of wear give the grid both functional character and visual interest, highlighting the material history embedded in everyday street furniture.
Photographed tightly to emphasise texture, typography, and geometric design, the image works well as editorial material illustrating British industrial heritage, historic foundry work, and the overlooked details of urban infrastructure that underpin city life in London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA23AH - This image shows a close-up view of a cast iron street plate marking the location of a fire hydrant in London. The embossed text reads Ham Baker & Co Ltd MWB Fire Hydrant 5635 ND Makers Westminster SW, identifying both the manufacturer and the hydrant reference number used by water and fire authorities.
Such plates form part of London's long-established municipal infrastructure, providing essential information for emergency services by indicating the position of underground water mains and hydrants. The initials MWB refer to the Metropolitan Water Board, which managed London's water supply for much of the twentieth century, placing the plate firmly within the capital's historic public utilities system.
The textured metal surface, worn edges, and oxidised colouring reflect decades of exposure to traffic, weather, and footfall, giving the plate a distinctive patina. Foundry-made street furniture like this is a characteristic but often overlooked element of London's streetscape, combining functional engineering with durable industrial design.
Photographed tightly to emphasise lettering, texture, and material detail, the image works well as editorial illustration of urban infrastructure, historic utilities, emergency services support systems, and the layered history embedded in everyday London street surfaces. It is particularly suited to features on British industrial heritage, public works, and the hidden systems that support city life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RADRR7 - A close-up view of a cast iron street grid bearing the raised lettering A C Woodrow & Co, London. The metal surface shows signs of age and oxidation, with a blue-grey patina and rust tones around the edges, highlighting the durability and long service life of traditional British ironwork.
A C Woodrow & Co was a London-based manufacturer supplying cast iron street furniture and utility covers during a period when local and regional foundries produced much of the infrastructure embedded in British streets. The geometric stud pattern and embossed lettering reflect functional industrial design intended to provide strength, grip, and clear identification.
Photographed tightly to emphasise texture, colour, and typography, the image works both as documentary evidence of historic urban infrastructure and as an abstract study of industrial materials. It is suitable for illustrating themes of Victorian and early-20th-century manufacturing, urban archaeology, street design, and the material history of London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3JRBY - This image shows the interior door of a former prison cell at the House of Terror Museum on Andr?ssy ?t in Budapest, Hungary. The Hungarian words Beteg szoba, meaning sick room, are visible behind a glass panel in the heavy institutional door. In reality, such rooms were often used not for care but for the isolation, interrogation, or further punishment of prisoners held by the state security apparatus.
The House of Terror Museum occupies a building that was used first by the fascist Arrow Cross Party during the Second World War and later by the communist ?VH secret police. Thousands of people were detained, tortured, and imprisoned here as part of Hungary's experience of totalitarian rule in the 20th century. Cells and rooms like this form part of the museum's permanent exhibition, intended to confront visitors with the physical reality of political repression.
The worn paint, heavy metal fittings, and small inspection opening in the door emphasise the claustrophobic and dehumanising conditions faced by detainees. The image was taken indoors under artificial lighting, highlighting the texture and decay of the materials and reinforcing the atmosphere of confinement and institutional control.
This photograph is suitable for editorial use relating to European history, human rights, political repression, totalitarian regimes, memorial museums, and the legacy of fascism and communism in Central and Eastern Europe.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PNA0YH - A memorial to the Lincoln engineers that worked together to invent the tank in Lincoln in 1915.
William Foster & Co. was a Lincoln company in the early 20th century and was instrumental in the invention of the tank - a machine that is said to have cut short World War 1 and saved millions of lives.
This memorial to Foster and the others who helped him - including William Tritton - shows the shape of the early tanks and represents tha teamwork across Lincoln to bring the tank into existence. It is suitable located on the roundabout at the beginning of Tritton Road, named after the local engineer himself.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PHEK7Y - The eight Warrington ship canal bridges can be seen keeping a silent watch over the town, with the complete straightness of the waterway enabling the onlooker to see every bridge from the Thelwall Viaduct to Moore Lane Swing Bridge.
And it is these bridges that make this canal both unique and ground breaking.
The Cantilever itself weighs about 783 tonnes and the 206ft span carries the roadway 75 feet above the water level.
It was designed to provide a constant route to Latchford Train Station free from the interference and traffic stoppages associated with the turning of the nearby swing bridges.
The 36-mile canal opened on May 21, 1894, in a bid to divert trade from Liverpool docks into the centre of Manchester.
Dubbed The Big Ditch', more than 54million cubic yards of material were excavated for the canal, including 12million cubic yards of sandstone rock.
Terraced houses were set up nearby for workers, the likes of which can be seen on the estates off Knutsford Road in Latchford.
Meanwhile, bigwigs of the Manchester Ship Canal Company set up home in grand villas, most of which still exist in lower Grappenhall and Stockton Heath.
Work was twice delayed by water flooding into sections of the excavation, in November 1890 and December 1891.
However, the canal was finally completely filled with water in November 1893.
It opened to its first traffic on January 1, 1894. Today it is still a seaway for 1,500 ships annually carrying 6.5million tonnes of cargo.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG1TWA - A public electric vehicle street charger manufactured by EBGO, photographed in the village of Heptonstall, Calderdale, West Yorkshire. The charger is mounted on a pavement edge and protected by metal bollards, designed to prevent accidental vehicle impact and ensure safe public use.
Street-level EV charging points such as this form an increasingly important part of the UK's transition towards low-emission transport. Installed in residential and village locations, they support drivers without access to private driveways, enabling overnight and short-stay charging for electric cars and vans.
Heptonstall is a small Pennine village above the Calder Valley, and the presence of modern EV infrastructure reflects the spread of sustainable transport technology beyond major towns and cities into rural communities. The charger's compact, upright design and digital interface demonstrate the integration of smart technology into everyday streetscapes.
Photographed in daylight with surrounding greenery and pavement visible, the image documents the practical reality of electric vehicle infrastructure at a local level. It is suitable for editorial use relating to climate policy, electric vehicles, rural sustainability, public infrastructure investment, and the decarbonisation of transport in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG1WB5 - A close-up view of a circular cast-iron street grid or manhole cover bearing the name Milner, photographed in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. The cover is set flush into a tarmac road surface and shows significant surface wear, oxidation, and patina, highlighting the texture and ageing of the metal.
Cast-iron covers such as this are a common feature of British streets and reflect the country's long industrial and engineering heritage. Manufacturers' names were traditionally cast directly into utility covers, leaving behind a durable record of local or regional foundries and engineering firms that supplied municipal infrastructure during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Holmfirth, historically associated with textile production and industrial activity in the West Yorkshire Pennines, contains many surviving examples of this everyday industrial legacy embedded within the public realm. While often overlooked, street furniture and utility covers form an essential part of urban infrastructure, providing access to drainage, sewerage, and underground services.
Photographed from directly above, the image emphasises the circular form, radial patterning, and raised lettering of the ironwork, making it suitable for editorial use illustrating British infrastructure, industrial history, urban textures, and the material culture of streets and public utilities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NCX258 - John Howard FRS (2 September 1726 ? 20 January 1790) was a philanthropist and early English prison reformer.
Howard was born in North London, either in Hackney or Enfield. His father, also John, was a wealthy upholsterer at Smithfield Market in the city. His mother Ann Pettitt, or Cholmley, died when he was five years old, and, described as a sickly child, he was sent to live at Cardington, Bedfordshire, some fifty miles from London, where his father owned property.
Statue of John Howard, Bedford
John Howard was appointed High Sheriff of Bedfordshire in 1773,:?9? initially for a one-year period. Rather than delegating his duties to the under-sheriff as was customary, Howard inspected the county prison himself. He was shocked by what he found, and spurred into action to inspect prisons throughout England. Of particular concern to Howard were those prisoners who were held because they could not pay the jailer's fee ? an amount paid to the owner or keeper of the prison for upkeep. He took this issue to parliament, and in 1774 was called to give evidence on prison conditions to a House of Commons select committee. Unusually, Howard was called to the bar of the House of Commons and publicly thanked for his humanity and zeal.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M95NM7 - The entrance gates to the Sailors' Home were elaborate decorative pieces of ironwork which served the dual purpose of protecting the Savings Bank and keeping out seamen who might wish to gain entry to the Home after the strict 10 pm curfew.
By April 1852 the lower sections of the gates had been installed, decorated with a combination of elements from the interior balconies
four great panels of rope-work with central mermaid and trident figures identical to those inside. The two outer panels were fixed whilst the two centre sections rolled behind them on rails where they were hidden from sight while the Home was open for business.
The iron-work of the lower gates, produced a solid, intimidating aspect compared with the much lighter appearance of the balcony railings. The huge mass of iron made an impassable barrier but also a massive weight and it would have taken some effort to slide the gates open and close.
1852: An Unfortunate Death of Mary Ann Price
1907: The Tragic Death of Constable Locke
In the Annals of the Sailors' Home, printed in the Home's annual report for the year 1935, against the year 1907 was the following entry: November - Police Officer Locke killed through front gate falling upon him.
Early on the morning of Sunday 24 November, nearly an hour after midnight, Police constable number 324A, Brownlow Locke, of the Liverpool City Constabulary, met his death in a very strange and unexpected manner.
1951: The Gates Move to Their New Home in Sandwell
As part of the repair to War Damage following the Liverpool Blitz it was decided to remove the gates. On 25 March 1948 W & T Avery who had swallowed-up Pooley's and Sons were offered the gates by the Sailors' Home Committee. On 18 May 1949 Avery's made an offer of 50 guineas for the gates, which was accepted on 3 May. 1951.
The home was demolished between 1974-1975. After refurbishment at Barr & Grosvenor Ltd's foundry Wolverhampton, the gates were returned to the Liverpool One shopping developmet

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59X4D - This image shows a close-up view of a cast iron utility grid embossed with the words Yorkshire Water. The surface displays heavy rusting and weathering, with strong geometric patterns and raised lettering visible across the metal.
Grids and covers of this type form part of the underground water and drainage infrastructure managed by Yorkshire Water, one of the regional water and wastewater providers in England. Such access points allow inspection and maintenance of buried systems that support clean water supply and wastewater management.
The visible corrosion and patina reflect long-term exposure to weather, foot traffic, and vehicle loads, highlighting both the durability of cast iron and the ageing condition of much UK utility infrastructure. Although largely unnoticed by the public, these installations are essential to everyday urban and suburban life.
Photographed tightly to emphasise texture, typography, and material decay, the image works well as editorial material illustrating public utilities, infrastructure resilience, industrial design, and the often-overlooked physical fabric of water services in Britain.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M4MR0K - Kent is a county in South East England and one of the home counties. It borders Greater London to the north-west, Surrey to the west and East Sussex to the south-west, and Essex to the north across the estuary of the River Thames
it faces the French department of Pas-de-Calais across the Strait of Dover. The county town is Maidstone. It is the fifth most populous county in England, the most populous non-Metropolitan county and the most populous of the home counties.
Kent was one of the first British territories to be settled by Germanic tribes, most notably the Jutes, following the withdrawal of the Romans. Canterbury Cathedral in Kent, the oldest cathedral in England, has been the seat of the Archbishops of Canterbury since the conversion of England to Christianity that began in the 6th century with Saint Augustine. Rochester Cathedral in Medway is England's second-oldest cathedral. Located between London and the Strait of Dover, which separates England from mainland Europe, Kent has been the setting for both conflict and diplomacy, including the Battle of Britain in World War II and the Leeds Castle peace talks of 1978 and 2004.

List of Mew, Langton & Co Ltd pubs
THE HISTORY OF MEW, LANGTON AND COMPANY by Nick Redman, Whitbread's Company Archivist
In 1643 a Mr. Mewes held five plots of land in the Isle of Wight's capital. Although no document has been found that actually links him with the Mew family, there may well have been a connection. We do know that towards the end of the 18th century Benjamin Mew and his brother formed a partnership called Mew & Co. Brewers, with a brewery in Newport and another in Lymington. They also owned a number of pubs.
In 1850 the company was granted a royal warrant to supply Queen Victoria when she was in residence at Osborne House on the island. Soon afterwards the Newport plant was renamed the Royal Brewery. The firm continued to supply the Royal Household until George V's death in 1936. A 1911 price list includes Osborne Pale Ale and XXXS Nutritious Stout.
By 1965, the company had decided to accept a ?1.5m merger offer from Strong & Co Ltd of Romsey. In 1969, bottling and brewing ceased at Newport, and the Royal Brewery became a distribution centre. By the end of the year Strong's had become part of the Whitbread group, and the 144 Mew houses on the island were soon being supplied with both company's products.
In 1973 the newly-established Whitbread Wessex built extensions to the bottled and draught beer storage area, and sited a new tobacco, wine and spirit warehouse in the old Mew Langton mineral water factory.
Five years ago, Whitbread began examining the future of its pubs on the island, which then numbered 112. Many were sold or closed. The Newport depot continued to operate until February this year

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M6YFEM - Winston Churchill Memorial Garden is a small urban park discreetly tucked behind the Lower High Street shops. The gardens have a number of historical elements such as the formal rose garden, pergola, clipped yew avenue and St Mary's Mission building. It is still possible to see some of the headstones along the northern perimeter wall. Find out more about the history of the park.
Rose garden
In the centre of the rose garden stands a drinking fountain which is surrounded by words, phrases and simple line drawings gathered from local children and adults to symbolise how they feel about the gardens. The images are pressed into blue engineering bricks, once used on the railway line that runs parallel to the gardens. The project was jointly funded by Cheltenham Borough Council, the Lower High Street Partnership and the Regional Arts Council.
Play area
The fenced play area with its woodland trail, living tree sculptures and spring bulbs has a variety of new play equipment. The play equipment was chosen by pupils from Gloucester Road Primary School and provides play facilities for a wider age range. New equipment includes a multi-activity unit, roundabout, inclusive play springie, swings, a pole spin and talk tubes.
Informal recreational area
The area south of the play area is used for informal recreation. The eastern boundary has been planted with native dog rose and wild flowers to enhance the urban park for wildlife and people alike.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M1MF3F - In 1845 a directory first listed a brass-founding business under Chrime Brothers
Edward, Richard and Peter were the sons of Edward Chrimes senior, a plumber and glazier. In the same year Edward Chrimes junior patented the 'high pressure loose valve screw-down cock', fore runner of the modern domestic tap
His brother Richard returned from London initially on a temporary basis to run the company. He then entered into partnership with John Guest, with the company becoming known as Guest and Chrimes. In 1848 the firm also started making sluice valve bodies cast in one piece, and from 1849 they manufactured patented New York style fire hydrants, which were widely exported.
The first foundry, known as Butter Market Foundry, was situated close to the River Don and the Market Place. In the mid 1850s the firm was awarded a large contract for valve gear and plumbing equipment for the Madrid Water Company in Spain, which necessitated an expansion of manufacturing. A new larger site was purchased beside the River Don and in 1857 the present factory was built on Don Street on a previously open field. The firm now had the facility for casting and machining both brass and iron.
The premises of Guest and Chrimes were listed at Grade II in February 1986. In 1999 the complex closed. All the post-1934 buildings were demolished in the early C21, having gone by 2012. In July 2018 there was a fire in the front, eastern range. Subsequently the whole of the front office range, caretaker's house, eastern extension and part of the angled return were demolished, leaving eight bays attached to the long rear range with the water tower

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1RDEM - Chapel-en-le-Frith (/??t???p?l ???n l? ??fr??/) is a town and civil parish in the Borough of High Peak in Derbyshire, England.
It has been dubbed the Capital of the Peak, in reference to the Peak District, historically the upperland areas between the Saxon lands (below the River Trent) and the Vikings lands (which came as far south as Dore, Sheffield).
The town was established by the Normans in the 12th century, originally as a hunting lodge within the Forest of High Peak. This led to the French-derived name Chapel-en-le-Frith (chapel in the forest). (It appears in an English form in a Latin record as 'Chapell in the ffryth', in 1401.) The population at the 2011 census was 8,635
Although most of the area is outside the National Park boundary, the town is in the western part of the Peak District. To the north and south lie the Dark Peak highlands, which are made up of millstone grit and are heather-covered moorlands, rugged and bleak. These include Chinley Churn and South Head with, a little further off, Kinder Scout, which looms above the whole area. To the east is the gentler and more pastoral White Peak, consisting largely of limestone grasslands, nevertheless with spectacular bluffs and the occasional gorge. Combs Moss, a gritstone 'edge', dominates the valley in which Chapel lies from the south and Eccles Pike rises sharply above the town to its west and provides a commanding 360? viewpoint.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1WB84 - Whaley Bridge is a town and civil parish in the High Peak district of Derbyshire, England. It is situated on the River Goyt, 16 miles (26 km) south-east of Manchester, 7 miles (11 km) north of Buxton, 9 miles (14 km) north-east of Macclesfield and 28 miles (45 km) west of Sheffield. It had a population of 6,455 at the 2011 census, including Furness Vale, Horwich End, Bridgemont, Fernilee, Stoneheads and Taxal.
The River Goyt formed the historical boundary between Derbyshire and Cheshire. The present town of Whaley Bridge was divided into smaller towns in both counties. Historical records show that, in 1316, on the Cheshire side there were Taxal, Yeardsley and Whaley
the last two were combined into one district of Yeardsley-cum-Whaley. The Derbyshire side consisted only of Fernilee, which included the villages of Shallcross and Horwich. This side was in the parish of Hope and was part of the Forest of High Peak, while the Cheshire side was part of the Forest of Macclesfield. From 1796, Taxal and Yeardsley were effectively joined in that the Jodrell family was the main landowner in both towns, although the administration of these remained separate until 1936
Whaley Bridge continues to expand as new housing is built, but retains the character of a small town. As the self-styled Gateway to the Goyt, it attracts tourists, mainly walkers, but has not become dominated by the tourist industry, unlike some other local towns and villages. The Peak District Boundary Walk runs through the village

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTJYJA - A chapel of ease known as Trinity Chapel was built on the site in 1708 to relieve pressure on the parish church of St Elphin's. It was built as an oratory by Peter Legh of Lyme Park. By the 1750s the chapel was too small for its congregation and in 1758 subscriptions were raised to build a new church, which was consecrated in 1760. The architecture is in the style of James Gibbs, but he was ill at the time the church was built and it is thought it was designed by one of Gibbs' associates. In 1862 a west clock tower was added which was designed by W. P. Coxon, the Borough Surveyor
the tower belongs to the town rather than to the church
The church is built in Georgian style. Its front is constructed in sandstone, and the rear in brick with stone dressings. The stonework at the front is rusticated. The front aspect is in four stages
at the base is a rusticated plinth, above which is a tier of windows with a Doric doorcase at the west of the front. Then comes an upper tier of windows with Ionic pilasters and at the top a cornice and a plain parapet. In the east wall is a Palladian window. The tower is in cast iron and has octagonal and square stages with a slim ogee-cap

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRR04F - St Elphin's Church is the parish church of the town of Warrington, Cheshire, England. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Liverpool, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the deanery of Warrington.
A place of worship has been present on the site since about 650 AD, and the presence of a priest in Warrington was recorded in the Domesday Book. According to tradition the first church was built by Saint Oswald for his companion Elphin, who remained as the first priest there until his death in 679. The earliest fabric in the present church is in the chancel and the crypt, which survive from the church built in 1354 by Sir William Boteler.
Most of the fabric of the present church is the result of an extensive restoration between 1859 and 1867 by Frederick and Horace Francis. It was during this restoration that the spire was added. The bells were recast in 1698 and again in 1884. In 1950 they were recast again and the clock was replaced
The plan of the church consists of a wide nave, wide north and south aisles with a chapel at the eastern end of each aisle, a central tower with a tall spire at the crossing, and a chancel

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNBYA8 - Chipping Campden is a market town in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. It is notable for its terraced High Street, dating from the 14th century to the 17th century. (Chipping is from Old English c?ping, 'market', 'market-place'
the same element is found in other towns such as Chipping Norton, Chipping Sodbury and Chipping (now High) Wycombe.)
A wool trading centre in the Middle Ages, Chipping Campden enjoyed the patronage of wealthy wool merchants, most notably William Greville (d.1401). The High Street is lined with buildings built from locally quarried oolitic limestone known as Cotswold stone, and boasts a wealth of vernacular architecture. Much of the town centre is a conservation area which has helped to preserve the original buildings. The town is an end point of the Cotswold Way, a 102-mile long-distance footpath.
Chipping Campden has hosted its own Olympic Games since 1612.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPB8MW - The sculpture is by John O'Connor, he studied at the Sculpture Academy in London for four years, before going on to teach sculpture, moulding and casting.
The piece is cast in bronze resin and is called Beyond Limitations. It was placed in the Lady Arbour Clouster Gardens in 2013. . On the picturesque estuary border between Essex and Suffolk there is a hidden artist's studio. It remains a secret to the general public but the studio receives commissions from across the globe. A true asset to the local community and the international art scene alike.
This secret is sculptor John O'Connor. He works prolifically in his studio at Manningtree, a world away from the hustle and bustle of any art capital. He has as much talent and focus as any artist you would expect to find working in a major city and has been producing figurative contemporary sculpture for the last 18 years.
John's work has become increasingly popular and much sought after, in fact, business is booming. Amidst the glamour of celebrities and the household names of the garden design world, John was once again exhibiting his art works at the recent RHS Chelsea Flower Show. He was delighted to have again been working in collaboration with award winning garden designer James Basson. This year Basson designed the M&G show garden.
This summer he exhibited at two other RHS shows, Chatsworth House (June 7?11), and Hampton Court Flower Show (July 3?9).
Collaborating with John on the RHS shows will be various local companies including Dedham Vale Vineyards who will be sponsoring the private view with their delicious sparkling English Brut, and Essex based stonemasons, Wood For Stone, who will be providing the stone for this years exhibit. This years planting will also be provided by the Oxford based Water Perry Gardens. John also has various other prominent shows planned for this year.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPDJC2 - Bulmers cider is one of a number of brands owned by British cider maker H. P. Bulmer of Hereford. It is one of the biggest selling British bottled cider brands in the UK because it has the highest concentration of apples, with a number of variants including Bulmers Original & Pear. It should not be confused with Bulmers Irish Cider, sold outside the Republic of Ireland as Magners.
History
Fred and Percy Bulmer grew the apples at their family orchard at Credenhill in Herefordshire which would be later used to make the cider for which they became known. Production was initially at Ryelands Street in Hereford, the original buildings, including cider cellars survives today as the Cider Museum and King Offa Distillery. Production moved to the current Plough Lane site in the late 1970s. Today HP Bulmer makes 65% of the UK's five hundred million litres of cider sold annually, and the bulk of the UK's cider exports. From 1937 to 1949, Bulmers operated with Wm. Magners of Clonmel, expanding into Irish distribution markets. From 1949 Magners withdrew from this partnership but retained rights to trade under the name HP Bulmer Ltd in Ireland.
In 2003, the Hereford-based firm was bought for ?278 million by Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) with the loss of some 200 jobs initially. In 2008, S&N were bought for ?7.8 billion by the Carlsberg and Heineken groups. Bulmers now only survives as a brand name and subsidiary of the Dutch Heineken group, with operations in Hereford scaled back to focus mainly on the production of cider.
During spring 2006, the company relaunched Bulmers Original in the UK, aimed at the served over ice market, which had grown in popularity over the past few years. Bulmers Original is a 4.5% ABV cider, primarily sold in pint bottles (568 ml). In November 2007, Bulmers pear cider was launched

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M108BX - The British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom and is one of the largest libraries in the world. It is estimated to contain between 170 and 200 million items from many countries. As a legal deposit library, the British Library receives copies of all books produced in the United Kingdom and Ireland, including a significant proportion of overseas titles distributed in the UK. The Library is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
The British Library is a major research library, with items in many languages and in many formats, both print and digital: books, manuscripts, journals, newspapers, magazines, sound and music recordings, videos, play-scripts, patents, databases, maps, stamps, prints, drawings. The Library's collections include around 14 million books, along with substantial holdings of manuscripts and items dating as far back as 2000 BC. The library maintains a programme for content acquisition and adds some three million items each year occupying 9.6 kilometres (6 mi) of new shelf space.
Prior to 1973, the Library was part of the British Museum. The Library is now located in a building purpose-built on the disused site of Midland Railway's Somers Town Goods Yard and Potato Market, on the north side of Euston Road in Somers Town, London (between Euston railway station and St Pancras railway station), and has an additional storage building and reading room in the branch library near Boston Spa, in the Leeds district of West Yorkshire. The St Pancras building was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 25 June 1998, and is classified as a Grade I listed building of exceptional interest for its architecture and history
The British Library was created on 1 July 1973 as a result of the British Library Act 1972. Prior to this, the national library was part of the British Museum, which provided the bulk of the holdings of the new library.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JF0T7Y - Bawming the Thorn
Each June, the village hosts the ceremony of Bawming the Thorn. The current form of the ceremony dates from the 19th century, when it was part of the village's walking day. It involved children from Appleton Thorn Primary School walking through the village and holding sports and games at the school. This now takes place at the village hall. The ceremony stopped in the 1930s, but was revived by the then headmaster, Bob Jones, in 1973. Bawming the Thorn occurs on the Saturday nearest to Midsummer's Day.

Local schoolchildren dance around the tree in the style of a maypole chanting verses to the tune of Bonnie Dundee, with the following repeated chorus:
Up with fresh garlands this midsummer morn,
Up with red ribbons on Appleton Thorn.
Come lasses and lads to the Thorn Tree today
To bawm it and shout as ye bawm it Hurray!
Bawming means decorating ? during the ceremony the thorn tree is decorated with ribbons and garlands. According to legend, the hawthorn at Appleton Thorn grew from a cutting of the Holy Thorn at Glastonbury, which was itself said to have sprung from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea, the man who arranged for Jesus's burial after the crucifixion

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BM725A - Cable & Wireless plc was a British telecommunications company. In the mid-1980s, it became the first company in the UK to offer an alternative telephone service to British Telecom (via subsidiary Mercury Communications). The company later offered cable TV to its customers, but it sold its cable assets to NTL in 2000. It remained a significant player in the UK telecoms market and in certain overseas markets, especially in the former British colonies of the Caribbean, where it was formerly the monopoly incumbent. It was also the main supplier of communication in the British South Atlantic, including Saint Helena and the Falkland Islands. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange and was a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.
The company split in March 2010, with its international division demerging to form Cable & Wireless Communications. The remainder of the Cable & Wireless business became Cable & Wireless Worldwide and was acquired by Vodafone in 2012.

The Salter Statues Campaign group raised ?60k, which Southwark Council matched, to pay for replacement statues, and these were unveiled on 30 November 2014.
A Salter Memorial Lecture is promoted by the Quaker Socialist Society each year as a fringe event at the Britain Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).
Alfred Salter (16 June 1873 ? 24 August 1945) was a British medical practitioner and Labour Party politician
Salter was born in Greenwich in 1873, the son of W H Salter. Following education at John Roan School, Greenwich, he went on to study medicine at Guy's Hospital, London
While at the Bermondsey Methodist Settlement, which had been established by Rev. John Scott Lidgett, Salter set up mutual health insurance schemes and adult education classes on health matters. In 1900 he married Ada Brown, who shared his political and social views
In the year of his marriage he established his medical practice in Bermondsey, and the couple worked together in trying to alleviate the effects of poverty in the largely working class area. He chose to offer services free to those who could not pay.[4] This work was to lead the establishment of a pioneering comprehensive health service in the area
Salter decided that by entering politics he could effect changes to the squalid environment in Bermondsey far more quickly and profoundly than he could outside the political arena. He was elected to Bermondsey Borough Council in 1903
In the 1922 general election he was again nominated as Labour candidate for Bermondsey West. Salter secured 7,550 votes, a majority of 2,325. His wife Ada, as mayor of the borough, was the returning officer who declared him elected. According to Fenner Brockway, the anti-war activist, Salter in his youth was known as the Settlement firebrand ? militant Republican, militant Socialist, militant Agnostic, etc

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A989PT - Appleton Thorn is a village in the borough of Warrington in Cheshire, England.
Appleton appeared in the Domesday survey as Epeltune, meaning the tun where the apples grew.
Bawming the Thorn
Each June, the village hosts the ceremony of Bawming the Thorn. The current form of the ceremony dates from the 19th century, when it was part of the village's walking day. It involved children from Appleton Thorn Primary School walking through the village and holding sports and games at the school. This now takes place at the village hall. The ceremony stopped in the 1930s, but was revived by the then headmaster, Mr Bob Jones in the early 1970s. Bawming the Thorn occurs on the Saturday nearest to Midsummer's Day.

Thorn Cross (HM Prison) is in Appleton Thorn, on the site formerly occupied by Royal Naval Air Station HMS Blackcap, a wartime aircrew training and aircraft repair airfield. There are a number of graves of aircrew who died at HMS Blackcap, mainly in flying accidents, in St Cross churchyard, known locally as the war graves.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT31C - Warrington was founded by the Romans at an important crossing place on the River Mersey. A new settlement was established by the Saxons. By the Middle Ages, Warrington had emerged as a market town at the lowest bridging point of the river. A local tradition of textile and tool production dates from this time.
The modern Borough of Warrington was formed in 1974 with the amalgamation of the former County Borough of Warrington, part of the Golborne Urban District, the Lymm Urban District, part of the Runcorn Rural District, the Warrington Rural District and part of the Whiston Rural District.
The River Mersey runs through the heart of the town dividing it in two. There are only two main thoroughfares crossing the Mersey in Warrington: at Warrington Bridge at Bridge Foot and at the Kingsway Bridge. Before the M6 was built, these routes were very busy with through traffic.
The Manchester Ship Canal runs through the south of the town
three swing bridges and a high-level cantilever bridge provide crossing points. Although shipping movements on the ship canal are far less frequent than in years past, they can cause severe delay to local road traffic. The Bridgewater Canal runs through the borough from the village of Lymm to Walton Hall and Gardens, a local park/leisure area. The course of the Sankey Canal runs through the west of the town, although most of it is not suitable for navigation.

The Dublin Writers Museum was opened in November 1991 at No 18, Parnell Square, Dublin, Ireland. The museum occupies an original 18th-century house, which accommodates the museum rooms, library, gallery, and administration area. The annexe behind it has a coffee shop and bookshop on the ground floor and exhibition and lecture rooms on the floors above. Dublin stuccatore Michael Stapleton decorated the upstairs gallery. The Irish Writers' Centre, next door in No 19, contains the meeting rooms and offices of the Irish Writers' Union, the Society of Irish Playwrights, the Irish Children's Book Trust and the Irish Translators' & Interpreters' Association. The basement beneath both houses is occupied by the Chapter One restaurant.
The Museum was established to promote interest, through its collection, displays and activities, in Irish literature as a whole and in the lives and works of individual Irish writers. Through its association with the Irish Writers' Centre it provides a link with living writers and the international literary scene. On a national level it acts as a centre, simultaneously pulling together the strands of Irish literature and complementing the smaller, more detailed museums devoted to individuals like James Joyce, George Bernard Shaw, William Butler Yeats and Patrick Pearse. It functions as a place where people can come from Dublin, Ireland and abroad to experience the phenomenon of Irish writing both as history and as actuality.
The writers featured in the Museum are those who have made an important contribution to Irish or international literature or, on a local level, to the literature of Dublin. It is a view of Irish literature from a Dublin perspective.
On display in the museum are literary ephemera and memorabilia, including a detailed replica of The Book of Kells, Samuel Beckett's phone, a letter from 'tenement aristocrat' Brendan Behan to his brother.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M84JKF - Telecom ??ireann meaning Telecommunications of Ireland) was an Irish state-owned telecommunications company that operated from 1983 to 1999. Prior to then a telephone and postal service was provided by the Department of Posts and Telegraphs (known as P and T or P??? in gaelic script), as part of the civil service. Telecom ??ireann was established by the Postal and Telecommunications Services Act, 1983
its full formal title was Bord Telecom ??ireann or, in the English language, The Irish Telecommunications Board. Telecom ??ireann may be translated as Telecom of Ireland. In 1999, the company was privatised and renamed as eircom.
Telecom ??ireann rolled out digital telephone switching technology, across the country along with an extensive fibre optic and digital microwave backbone. Two digital switching systems were selected
CIT-Alcatel's E10 and Ericsson's AXE telephone exchange. Digital technology quickly replaced analogue systems at national and major regional switching centres and new international gateway switches were installed. The oldest electromechanical step-by-step exchanges and manual operator-manned local exchanges were the first to be converted to digital technology. More modern electromechanical crossbar exchanges, using Ericsson ARF, Hitachi and ITT Pentaconta technology dating from the 1960s and 1970s were converted to digital bit by bit through the late 1980s and early 1990s. These crossbar switches were capable of providing voice service that was comparable to digital switching technology.
Eir is currently majority owned by Xavier Niel's Iliad SA and his Paris-based NJJ Telecom Europe investment fund. The group includes French telecommunications provider Free and Iliad Italia

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M8DJE4 - Patrick Kavanagh (21 October 1904 ? 30 November 1967) was an Irish poet and novelist. His best-known works include the novel Tarry Flynn, and the poems On Raglan Road and The Great Hunger. He is known for his accounts of Irish life through reference to the everyday and commonplace
Patrick Kavanagh was born in rural Inniskeen, County Monaghan, in 1904, the fourth of ten children of James Kavanagh and Bridget Quinn
Kavanagh's first published work appeared in 1928[7] in the Dundalk Democrat and the Irish Independent. Kavanagh had encountered a copy of the Irish Statesman, edited by George William Russell, who published under the pen name AE and was a leader of the Irish Literary Revival. Russell at first rejected Kavanagh's work but encouraged him to keep submitting, and he went on to publish verse by Kavanagh in 1929 and 1930. This inspired the farmer to leave home and attempt to further his aspirations. In 1931, he walked 80 miles (abt. 129 kilometres) to meet Russell in Dublin, where Kavanagh's brother was a teacher. Russell gave Kavanagh books, among them works by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Victor Hugo, Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Robert Browning, and became Kavanagh's literary adviser. Kavanagh joined Dundalk Library and the first book he borrowed was The Waste Land by T. S. Eliot.
Kavanagh's first collection, Ploughman and Other Poems, was published in 1936. It is notable for its realistic portrayal of Irish country life, free of the romantic sentiment often seen at the time in rural poems, a trait he abhorred. Published by Macmillan in its series on new poets, the book expressed a commitment to colloquial speech and the unvarnished lives of real people, which made him unpopular with the literary establishment. Two years after his first collection was published he had yet to make a significant impression. The Times Literary Supplement described him as a young Irish poet of promise rather than of achievement

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M8DJE9 - Con Houlihan (6 December 1925 ? 4 August 2012) was an Irish sportswriter. Despite only progressing to national journalism at the age of 46, he became the greatest and the best-loved Irish sports journalist of all
Over a lengthy career, Houlihan covered many Irish and international sporting events, from Gaelic football and hurling finals, to soccer and rugby World Cups, the Olympics and numberless race meetings inside and outside Ireland.
He was a journalist with the Irish Press group writing for The Irish Press, Evening Press and sometimes The Sunday Press, until the group's demise in 1995. He wrote the Tributaries column and Evening Press back sports page Con Houlihan column
Houlihan died in the morning of 4 August 2012 in St James's Hospital in Dublin. Often considered one of Ireland's finest writers, he left behind a legacy of immense sports journalism that spanned over 60 years. A minute's silence was observed in his memory ahead of Kerry's All-Ireland Senior Football Championship quarter-final defeat to Donegal at Croke Park the following day. His last column, in which he wished Katie Taylor well, was published the day after his death.[6] His funeral took place on 8 August 2012
A bronze bust of Houlihan was unveiled in his hometown of Castleisland in 2004. In 2011, a bronze plaque was installed outside The Palace bar in Dublin. The sculpture is in the foyer of The Bank pub on College Green. Cons Corner and a Bronze Bust with a quote are in The Palace Bar.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MCGAW9 - William Temple was born the son of the Leicestershire man Anthony Temple, whose family name was said to descend from the Knight Templars, a once powerful monastic order during the Crusades, but which was outlawed by Pope Clement V. The rituals and the secrets of the order survived and many of the Knight Templars families came to prominence in 16th-century England when Protestantism was embraced. He was educated at Eton College and passed with a scholarship to King's College, Cambridge, in 1573. In 1576 he was elected a fellow of King's, and graduated with a B.A. in 1577?8 and M.A. in philosophy in 1581. He became Master of Lincoln Grammar School that same year. Though originally destined for the law, he became a tutor in logic at his college. In his logic readings, wrote a pupil, Anthony Wotton, in his Runne from Rome (1624), he always laboured to fit his pupils for the true use of that art rather than for vain and idle speculations. He accepted with enthusiasm the logical methods and views of Petrus Ramus, and became the most active champion of the Ramists in England.
William Temple's first sight of Ireland came as he landed at Howth in April 1599 to take up his position as secretary to the new lord lieutenant, Robert Devereux, and 2nd Earl of Essex. It was a baptism of fire as their first great task was to suppress a major rebellion of the native Irish tribes who had now united with the Anglo-Normans. While Essex campaigned around the country, Temple stayed behind in Dublin that summer relaying news of military deployment and successes to the Royal Court, Essex, once Elizabeth's most trusted confidant and intimate advisor, now became the unappreciated and maligned viceroy falling foul of the ageing queen. Both he and William Temple were ignominiously recalled to London that same autumn.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MCGB9X - Philip Parris Lynott (20 August 1949 ? 4 January 1986) was an Irish singer, bassist, and songwriter. His most commercially successful group was Thin Lizzy, of which he was a founding member, the principal songwriter, lead vocalist and bassist. He was known for his distinctive plectrum-based style on the bass, and for his imaginative lyrical contributions including working class tales and numerous characters drawn from personal influences and Celtic culture.
Lynott was born in the West Midlands of England, but grew up in Dublin with his grandparents. He remained close to his mother, Philomena, throughout his life. He fronted several bands as a lead vocalist, including Skid Row alongside Gary Moore, before learning the bass guitar and forming Thin Lizzy in 1969. After initial success with Whiskey in the Jar, the band had several hits in the mid-1970s such as The Boys Are Back in Town, Jailbreak and Waiting for an Alibi, and became a popular live attraction combining Lynott's vocal and songwriting skills with dual lead guitars. Towards the end of the 1970s, Lynott embarked upon a solo career, published two books of poetry, and after Thin Lizzy disbanded, he assembled and fronted the band Grand Slam.
In 2005, a life-size bronze statue of Lynott by Dublin sculptor Paul Daly was unveiled on Harry Street, off Grafton Street in Dublin. The ceremony was attended by Lynott's mother Philomena, and former band members Moore, Bell, Robertson, Downey, Gorham and Darren Wharton, who performed live
In the 1980s, Lynott increasingly suffered drug-related problems, particularly an addiction to heroin. In 1985, he had a final chart success with Moore, Out in the Fields, followed by the minor hit Nineteen, before his death in 1986. He remains a popular figure in the rock world

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF5JN - Turing has been honoured in various ways in Manchester, the city where he worked towards the end of his life. In 1994, a stretch of the A6010 road (the Manchester city intermediate ring road) was named Alan Turing Way. A bridge carrying this road was widened, and carries the name Alan Turing Bridge. A statue of Turing was unveiled in Manchester on 23 June 2001 in Sackville Park, between the University of Manchester building on Whitworth Street and Canal Street. The memorial statue depicts the father of computer science sitting on a bench at a central position in the park. Turing is shown holding an apple. The cast bronze bench carries in relief the text 'Alan Mathison Turing 1912?1954', and the motto 'Founder of Computer Science' as it could appear if encoded by an Enigma machine: 'IEKYF ROMSI ADXUO KVKZC GUBJ'. However, the meaning of the coded message is disputed, as the 'u' in 'computer' matches up with the 'u' in 'ADXUO'. As a letter encoded by an enigma machine can not appear as itself, the actual message behind the code is uncertain.[207]
Turing memorial statue plaque in Sackville Park, Manchester
A plaque at the statue's feet reads 'Father of computer science, mathematician, logician, wartime codebreaker, victim of prejudice'. There is also a Bertrand Russell quotation: Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty?a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture. The sculptor buried his own old Amstrad computer under the plinth as a tribute to the godfather of all modern computers - The Alan Turing Memorial, situated in Sackville Park in Manchester, England, is in memory of Alan Turing, a pioneer of modern computing. Turing is believed to have committed suicide in 1954 two years after being convicted of gross indecency (i.e. homosexual acts). As such he is as much a gay icon as an icon of computing, and it is no coincidence that this memorial is situated near Canal Street, Manchester's gay village.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D8NX32 - Cast in eight pieces of half-inch thick bronze (made to last 6,000 years) and weighing half a ton, the 7ft effigy of Nottingham's legendary outlaw proudly stands on a two-and-a-half ton block of white Clipsham stone. It is surrounded by small studies of Little John, Friar Tuck, Alan A Dale and Will Scarlett, whilst wall plaques illustrate scenes from the tales of Robin Hood & his Merry Men.
In typical outlaw style Robin Hood stands outside of Nottingham Castle, the point of his arrow aimed at the gatehouse and the establishment within.
Join celebrities and millions of visitors who have had their photo taken at the famous Robin Hood statue at Nottingham Castle.
History of the famous figure:
On 24th July 1952, the statue of Robin Hood was unveiled by the Duchess of Portland on the Robin Hood Lawn, beneath Nottingham Castle, in the remains of the moat on Castle Road.
It was a warm sunny day when 500 schoolchildren sat attentively on the grass in the special VIP enclosure to watch the ceremony of the statue and its complementary plaques and sculptures being revealed to the public, accompanied by a fanfare from the band of the Royal Lincolnshire Regiment.
Gifted to the city by local businessman, Philip E F Clay, the impressive figure was intended to provide something tangible for visitors to see relating to Robin Hood, Nottingham's world-famous folk hero. Mr Clay was a successful director of well-known city firms Elastic Yarns Ltd and Fine Wires Ltd and in 1949, at a cost of ?5,000, he commissioned the respected Royal Academy sculptor, James Woodford, to design and make the Robin Hood statue, plaques and statuary.
On completion, they were to be presented to the city to commemorate the visit of Princess Elizabeth and The Duke of Edinburgh on 28th June 1949 during the city's quincentenary celebrations. Mr Clay had originally wished to remain anonymous.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MNFTH9 - Manchester Cathedral, formally the Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys and St George, in Manchester, England, is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Manchester, seat of the Bishop of Manchester and the city's parish church. It is on Victoria Street in Manchester city centre and is a grade I listed building.
The former parish church was rebuilt in the Perpendicular Gothic style in the years following the foundation of the collegiate body in 1421. Then at the end of the 15th century, James Stanley II (warden 1485?1506 and later Bishop of Ely 1506?1515) was responsible for rebuilding the nave and collegiate choir with high clerestory windows
also commissioning the late-medieval wooden internal furnishings, including the pulpitum, choir stalls and the nave roof supported by angels with gilded instruments. The collegiate church became the cathedral of the new Diocese of Manchester in 1847. It was extensively refaced, restored and extended in the Victorian period, and again following bomb damage during World War II. It is one of fifteen Grade I listed buildings in Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDEYW8 - Since the onset of the Troubles in 1971, Nationalist and Loyalist communities throughout Northern Ireland have been divided by Peace Walls. These large stone and steel constructions were designed to protect neighbourhoods from sporadic attacks and retain a sense of peace and protection.
Of the city's 17 walls, West Belfast's sections are the most visited. Once in the area it's easy to determine which side of the divide you're on: red, white and blue kerbstones, Loyalist murals and Union Jacks indicate you're on the Shankill. If the kerbs are green, white and gold, the flag is Irish and the murals are Republican, you're on the Falls.
You can cross from one side to the other via access roads at Lanark Way and Northumberland Street. These roads close in times of heightened tension, which may well be the case during the marching season (see The Twelfth).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDF04K - A sculptural metal wall panel designed by young people from the Greater Shankill was installed on one of Northern Ireland's most famous peace walls today. Funded by the Arts Council led Re-imaging Communities programme, the large scale artwork was officially unveiled by Arts Minister Nelson McCausland.
The artwork, inspired by ideas presented by the local community, depicts a face, made up of dozens of smaller images themed around Belfast's industrial heritage. Created by artist Kevin Killen, ?The Face' has been installed on one of Belfast's most recognisable landmarks, the peace wall which divides the Shankill Road from the Falls Road at Cupar Way.
Arts Minister, Nelson McCausland said: This sculpture is a good example of how the arts have the power to transform a local area. Projects such as 'The Face' create a more welcoming atmosphere and help develop a community where people are proud to live. 'The Face' is part of the If Walls Could Talk programme which aims to create an outdoor art gallery of world-class art pieces and provide a canvas on which to express the rich history and cultural heritage of the area. Re-imaging art projects have been a key element in facilitating positive social change and I congratulate artist Kevin Killen and the participants from Impact Training and the Greater Shankill Alternatives for what they have achieved.
Artist Kevin Killen explained how the artwork was created: The Face relates to the themes of Belfast industries, working with the young adults in Impact Training, we designed and fabricated the artwork. Being a part of the project was rewarding and insightful to everyone involved. As the group was a part of the process from start to finish they have developed ownership of the artwork, which is an important benefit. I hope that the artwork gives pride to all the participants involved in the project.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H4HM1A - Kenneth Arthur Ken Dodd, OBE (born 8 November 1927) is an English comedian, singer-songwriter and actor, identified by his trademark unruly hair and protruding teeth, his red, white and blue tickling stick and his famous, upbeat greeting of How tickled I am!. He also created the world and characters of the Diddy Men, with 'diddy' being Liverpudlian slang for small.
He works mainly in the music hall tradition, although, in the past, has occasionally appeared in drama, including as Malvolio in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night on stage in Liverpool in 1971
on television in the cameo role of 'The Tollmaster' in the 1987 Doctor Who story Delta and the Bannermen
and as Yorick (in silent flashback) in Kenneth Branagh's film version of Shakespeare's Hamlet in 1996. In the 1960s his fame in the UK was such that he rivalled The Beatles as a household name, with his recording of Tears being the UK's third-best-selling single of the 1960s. His records have sold millions worldwide. As of 2016 he continues to tour with his comedy and music show.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H550GA - Cable theft costs millions of pounds each year. The total cost to the economy, taking into account the impact of freight delays to power stations, supermarkets etc and on passengers who miss appointments or have their day ruined, is even higher.
The theft of metal is a big problem for the railway as thieves target signalling cables, overhead power lines and even metal fences to sell for scrap.
Britain's rail network is designed to fail safe, which means that when a cable is cut trains are brought to a standstill. This protects passengers but can lead to lengthy, frustrating delays while the problem is found and fixed safely.
A large proportion of funding comes from the UK Government, so these thefts are, ultimately, costing taxpayers money.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGMNYK - The British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom and the largest library in the world by number of items catalogued. It is estimated to contain 170?200 million+ items from many countries. As a legal deposit library, the British Library receives copies of all books produced in the United Kingdom and Ireland, including a significant proportion of overseas titles distributed in the UK. The Library is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
The British Library is a major research library, with items in many languages and in many formats, both print and digital: books, manuscripts, journals, newspapers, magazines, sound and music recordings, videos, play-scripts, patents, databases, maps, stamps, prints, drawings. The Library's collections include around 14 million books,[10] along with substantial holdings of manuscripts and historical items dating back as far as 2000 BC. In addition to receiving a copy of every publication produced in the UK and Ireland (approximately 8,000 per day), the Library has a programme for content acquisitions. The Library adds some three million items every year occupying 9.6 kilometres (6.0 mi) of new shelf space. There is space in the library for over 1,200 readers.
Prior to 1973, the Library was part of the British Museum. The British Library Act 1972 detached the library department from the museum, but it continued to host the now separated British Library in the same Reading Room and building as the museum until 1997. The Library is now located in a purpose-built building on the north side of Euston Road in St Pancras, London (between Euston railway station and St Pancras railway station), and has a document storage centre and reading room near Boston Spa, near Wetherby in West Yorkshire. The St Pancras building was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 25 June 1998, and is classified as a Grade I listed building of exceptional interest for its architecture.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64KH2 - This image shows a set of classic Avery mechanical weighing scales positioned on the counter of a traditional sweet shop, with rows of glass jars filled with assorted confectionery visible in the background. The polished metal scales, featuring an analogue dial and the Avery maker's badge, reflect a style of retail equipment that was once standard in British shops.
Avery scales were widely used throughout the twentieth century in grocery stores, sweet shops, and market stalls, valued for their accuracy, durability, and solid engineering. In sweet shops, such scales were essential for weighing loose confectionery sold by measure, reinforcing a hands-on, personalised retail experience.
The surrounding jars of sweets evoke the visual language of traditional confectionery retail, where colour, variety, and abundance played a key role in attracting customers. This form of display is strongly associated with childhood nostalgia and independent high-street shops, contrasting with modern pre-packaged retail formats.
Photographed at close range, the image emphasises texture, materials, and craftsmanship, highlighting the intersection of food retail, design, and everyday social history. It is well suited for editorial use covering British retail heritage, nostalgia, independent shops, traditional confectionery, and the evolution of weighing and measurement in commerce.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNMH - This image shows a memorial plaque mounted on a historic water trough in Martock, Somerset (TA12 6JL). The inscription reads: Water trough given in memory of the 450,000 horses killed in the South African War 1899?1902, commemorating the enormous loss of animal life during the conflict more commonly known as the Boer War.
During the South African War, horses were essential to the British Army for cavalry, artillery hauling, and transport across difficult terrain. Poor conditions, disease, exhaustion, and limited veterinary care led to exceptionally high mortality rates. Memorials such as this water trough were erected across Britain in the early 20th century as practical yet symbolic tributes, combining public utility with remembrance.
The trough reflects a wider tradition of functional war memorials, often placed in village centres to serve both people and working animals at a time when horses remained vital to everyday life. The engraved metal plaque set into stone conveys solemn remembrance while highlighting a lesser-acknowledged aspect of military history: the role and sacrifice of animals in warfare.
Today, the Martock water trough stands as an important piece of local heritage, linking the village to imperial history, early 20th-century memorial culture, and changing attitudes towards animal welfare. The image is suitable for editorial use relating to war memorials, British military history, the Boer War, animal history, remembrance culture, and Somerset local history.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXKNP - John Howard, the eighteenth century prison reformer once lodged on this site. The tablet was erected on 31st December 1906 by the Warrington Society. The unveiling ceremony took place in May 1907, on the anniversary of the publication of Howard's work, 'The State of the Prisons in England and Wales'. Mayor Griffith pulled back the green curtain, and addressing those who had gathered for the ceremony, saying that although there had been many memorials to John Howard, he did not think there were any to beat this in beauty or appropriateness, because he was in a way a Warrington man.
John Howard (1726-1790). John Howard became famous for the 'State of Prisons in England and Wales', which was written and published in Warrington in 1777 at Egres Press in Horsemarket Street. He was born in Hackney and the fortune left to him by his father in 1742 allowed him to travel. In 1756, the year after the death of his wife, he travelled to Lisbon. He was captured by a French Privateer and taken to Brest Prison. A short captivity left a lasting impression of the bad treatment given to prisoners of war. He married for a second time and moved to Cardington, near Bedfordshire, where he became the High-Sheriff. He recognised that many prisoners were being held unfairly in prison without being tried and even when they had been found innocent, until family and friends bribed the jailers to let them out. He began a series of tours around Great Britain and Ireland investigating the conditions of prisoners. He wrote about what he observed and made recommendation. As a result of these actions, two laws were passed in 1774, one providing a fixed salary for jailers, the other enforcing cleanliness. Much of the remainder of his life was spent touring the prisons on the mainland and the continent. He visited Warrington many times during his life, for many months at a time. In 1774 he was visiting the northern countries to re-invigorate his prison studies.

The red dress effect is the phenomena at which females wearing red clothing are perceived to be more sexually appealing than when wearing other colours.
Naturally, when many non-human primate females become fertile, their estrogen level rises, which causes their blood vessels to open up, leading to redness on the skin, especially near the face, chest and genitalia regions. This increased in redness has been shown to attract male counterparts, shown by their increased activity in sex, self-stimulation and attention towards the females. Therefore, there are reasons to believe of the existence of evolutionary instincts that associates red with fertility.
Many folklores, mythology and literature symbols associate red with fertility, and woman are thought to have worn the equivalent of a red lipstick as early as 10,000 B.C. and so sexual receptiveness and red may be a result of social conditioning. However, this social conditioning may have originated from biology and evolution, and is simply an extension of our primal instincts.

This track reminds me of thick black vinyl LP's on the NEMS label, £2.25 bargains at the Virgin Megastore on Manchester's Market Street, when I was still at school. Cracking albums anyway.
'Sweet Leaf' is a song by Black Sabbath from their 1971 album Master of Reality. The song, a hymn to recreational cannabis use. Apparently, it got its title from a packet of cigarettes bassist Geezer Butler bought in Dublin that claimed the tobacco was 'the sweet leaf.' ('Sweetleaf' is also an English name for stevia.) The song begins with a tape loop of guitarist Tony Iommi coughing.
I recently read the Ozzy Osbourne biography unintentionally by picking up a used book on holiday and I was instantly hooked. Could not put it down. Some of the Sabs albums have been out since.
Black Sabbath were an English rock band, formed in Aston, Birmingham UK in 1968 by Ozzy Osbourne (lead vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass guitar), and Bill Ward (drums). The band has since experienced multiple line-up changes, with Tony Iommi the only constant presence in the band through the years.
Despite an association with occult and horror themes, Black Sabbath also composed songs dealing with social instability, political corruption, the dangers of drug abuse and the often apocalyptic prophesies of the horrors of war. Mostly of course it was good headbanging stuff!
If this floats your boat, check out some of these other banging tracks, all to be found on the various Black Sabbath compilations out there:

This is a track I remember from the tail end of the Madchester period. A good one to be uplifted from a grey wet Manchester afternoon!
Deee-Lite you may remember was an American house and club/dance group, formed in New York City, United States. The group's best-known single was 'Groove Is in the Heart', from their 1990 debut album, World Clique.
The members of Deee-lite were Super DJ Dmitri (Dmitry Brill), Lady Miss Kier,
Towa Tei (Dong-hwa Chung) &
DJ Ani.
The tune 'Groove is In the Heart' featured lyrics from Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest, and bass guitar and vocals by Bootsy Collins.

'Mittageisen' is a single by the English band Siouxsie and the Banshees. Originally appearing on the band's 1978 debut album The Scream (an album I played to death when it first came out) as 'Metal Postcard (Mittageisen)', the track was re-recorded in 1979 with this time the lyrics sung in German.
The title 'Mittageisen' is a word play based on the German words 'Mittagessen' (literally: 'noon meal', i.e. Lunch) and Eisen ('iron'). The title was inspired by John Heartfield's photocollage Hurrah, die Butter ist Alle! ('Hurray, the Butter is Finished!'), that was also used as front cover art.
John Heartfield's photocollage was initially used on the frontpage of the 'Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung / Workers Illustrated Journal', published on 19 December 1935. Heartfield (1891–1968) was an early member of the Club Dada, which started 1916 as Cabaret Voltaire in Zürich. The picture with the title 'Hurrah, die Butter ist Alle! / Hurray, the butter is finished!' shows a family who eats various pieces of metal. The trigger for it was the following quote from Hermann Göring: 'Iron made a nation always strong, butter and lard made only the people fat.'
'Mittageisen' was composed by Banshees members Siouxsie Sioux, John McKay, Kenny Morris and Steven Severin, the lyrics were translated by Dave Woods.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J7J - This image shows a well-worn blue flight case stencilled with the words Lynott Thin Lizzy ? Fragile, referencing the touring equipment used by Thin Lizzy and frontman Phil Lynott. Such cases were essential for transporting guitars, amplifiers, and other delicate instruments between venues during extensive national and international tours.
The scuffed surface, chipped paint, and taped label remnants speak to years of use on the road, offering a tangible glimpse into the physical reality of touring life for rock bands during the 1970s and 1980s. Flight cases like this were handled by road crew members responsible for safely moving valuable equipment between trucks, stages, and backstage areas.
Thin Lizzy were one of Ireland's most influential rock bands, known for blending hard rock with folk influences and for iconic tracks such as The Boys Are Back in Town and Jailbreak. Objects associated with their touring years now carry strong cultural and historical significance, bridging the gap between music performance and the unseen labour behind live shows.
Photographed under low light, the image emphasises texture, wear, and typography, making it well suited to editorial use covering music history, classic rock heritage, touring culture, backstage life, and archival memorabilia connected to influential bands and musicians.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5151969435 - 'Solitary are a Lancashire based rock/metal band. They are Richard Sherrington (original member) on vox &
guitars, Roy Miller on drums, Andy Mellor on lead guitar and Mike Park on Bass. They are caught here at the Winnington Halloween gig in some more than usual fancy dress.
Solitary formed in Preston 1994 and signed to UK label Holier Than Thou Records in 1997, they made their first appearance on the HTT compilation “Genetically Fresh” which attracted interest from the JMG Agency who lined up support slots with Kill 2 This, Reign and Deranged from Sweden. May the following year Solitary record “Nothing Changes” Solitary then embarked on two UK tours to promote the album, which was released in November 1998.
In 2008 a new album “Requiem”, over a four-year period fraught with personal highs and lows the band created a 'Thrash Metal Monster', which was hailed as a must for the fans of Testament, God Forbid, Slayer or The Haunted. Influenced by the aforementioned bands and the 80’s Bay Area bands.
“Requiem” contains a guest vocal appearance from Chris Astley of 80’s Thrashers Xentrix on the track “Hatred” the CD also has cover of Testament’s “Into the Pit”. When writing the album Solitary used inspirational albums such as “Slaughter of the Soul”, “ The Gathering”, “ A New Darkness Upon Us” and “Gone Forever” as reference points to help them create the same feeling as those albums generated when they first heard them whether or not they’ve done that remains to be seen.
The artwork created by bassist Michael Park uses the original cover of a book published in 1736. The band are also shooting a video for “Keep Your Enemies Closer” in early September as well as having tracks on the CD cover mounts on Metal Hammer and Terrorizer in the UK.
If you have chance, catch a gig. See whats coming up at www.solitary.org.uk

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AA0RPF - Crewe Works is a British railway engineering facility built in 1840 by the Grand Junction Railway. It is located in the town of Crewe, in Cheshire. It is currently owned by Bombardier Transportation.
The railway also built 200 cottages establishing a new community in what had been the rural township of Monks Coppenhall. Among the first workers to arrive were those from the old works at Edge Hill producing an increase in the town's population by some 800 men, women and children.
In 1845 the Liverpool and Manchester Railway was merged with the Grand Junction. These, in turn, merged in 1846, with the London and Birmingham Railway and the Manchester and Birmingham Railway to form the London and North Western Railway (LNWR). All four had their own workshops but, in time, locomotive building was concentrated at Crewe.
In 1857 John Ramsbottom became Locomotive Superintendent. He had previously invented the first reliable safety valve and the scoop for picking up water from troughs between the tracks. He went on to improve the precision and interchangeability of tools and components.
In 1862 locomotive work was transferred from Wolverton. Wolverton became the carriage works, while wagon building was concentrated at Earlestown.
In 1853 Crewe had begun to make its own wrought iron and roll its own rails, and in 1864 installed a Bessemer converter for manufacturing steel. In 1868 it became the first place to use open-hearth furnaces on an industrial scale. It also built its own brickworks. Later the works was fitted with two electric arc furnaces.
Production increased steadily and, with the sale to the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway of ten 2-4-0 and eighty six 0-6-0 locomotives, privately owned manufacturers took out an injunction in 1876 to restrain the railway from producing anything but its own needs. This remained in force until British Rail Engineering Limited was established in 1969.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M1MMB6 - Yorkshire Water is a water supply and treatment utility company servicing West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, the East Riding of Yorkshire, part of North Lincolnshire, most of North Yorkshire and part of Derbyshire, in England. The company has its origins in the Yorkshire Water Authority, one of ten regional water authorities created by the Water Act 1973, and privatised under the terms of the Water Act 1989, when Yorkshire Water plc, the parent company of the Yorkshire Water business, was floated on the London Stock Exchange. The parent company was Kelda Group in 1999. In February 2008, Kelda Group was bought by a consortium of infrastructure funds.
It is regulated under the Water Industry Act 1991
Yorkshire Water has received fines for breaches of environmental law. For example:
Yorkshire Water was fined twice in April 2007. The first offence was for allowing polluting matter to enter Clifton beck in Brighouse, contrary to section 85(1) of the Water Resources Act 1991. The final incident killed one third of the wildlife along over a mile of the stream
Yorkshire Water was fined ?6,000 and ordered to pay ?9,051 in costs for supplying unfit water in May 2006 in a prosecution brought by the Drinking Water Inspectorate,
Yorkshire Water's largest fine, of ?119,000 (reduced to ?80,000 on appeal), with costs of ?125,598, was received in December 2000 after pleading guilty to seventeen charges of supplying water unfit for human consumption
