Three days after the accident, editor Kelvin MacKenzie published an editorial which accused people of scapegoating the police, saying that the disaster occurred because thousands of fans, many without tickets tried to get into the ground just before kick-off either by forcing their way in or by blackmailing the police into opening the gates. The next day, under a front-page headline The Truth, the paper falsely accused Liverpool fans of theft and of urinating on and attacking police officers and emergency services. Widespread boycotts of the newspaper throughout Merseyside followed immediately and continue to this day. Boycotts include both customers refusing to purchase it, and retailers refusing to stock it. The Financial Times reported in 2019 that Merseyside sales were estimated to drop from 55,000 per day to 12,000 per day, an 80% decrease. Chris Horrie estimated in 2014 that the tabloid's owners had lost £15 million per month since the disaster, in 1989 prices. Sales also declined to a lesser degree in neighbouring parts of Cheshire and Lancashire. It was revealed in a documentary called Alexei Sayle's Liverpool, aired in September 2008, that many Liverpudlians will not even take the newspaper for free, and those who do may simply burn or tear it up. In 1625 water was obtained from a single well and delivered by cart, but as the town grew, companies supplied water to homes through pipes. There were two main companies by the 1840s, but the water supply was intermittent, and there was general dissatisfaction with the service. Liverpool Corporation decided that such an important service should be provided by a public body, and sought to take over the water supply companies.
A series of Acts of Parliament were obtained, the first being the Liverpool Sanatory Act 1846, which created three key posts, the Medical Officer of Health, the Inspector of Nuisances, and the Borough Engineer. The latter post was filled by James Newlands, a visionary man who defined the role of the Borough Engineer, to be copied by many other towns and cities. He set about creating large scale maps of Liverpool, building a water-based sewerage system, making provision for bath houses, wash houses, swimming lessons, minimum sizes for rooms, paving and street lighting. The sewage was emptied into the River Mersey for the tides to take away, but he saw this as an interim measure, with a sewage treatment works being required. This part of his vision was not implemented until the 1980s.

Worlock was born in St John's Wood, London, on 4 February 1920, the son of Captain Harford Worlock and his wife Dora (née Hoblyn), a suffragette (or as she called herself, a suffragist). His father, a journalist turned Conservative political agent, attended Keble College, Oxford, and planned to become a priest in the Church of England
many of his forebears had been Anglican clergy. However, Harford and Dora Worlock converted to Roman Catholicism and raised their son in that faith.
Worlock was a student at St Edmund's College from 1934 to 1944. By this time the family home was in Winchester. As a small boy he was rebuked for having an answer to everything, a trait that remained. He was ordained at Old Hall Green on 3 June 1944 as a priest of the Diocese of Westminster, seminarians being exempt from military service so they could be rushed through to serve as chaplains.
Not long afterwards, he was appointed private secretary to Cardinal Griffin, and assisted successive cardinal-archbishops of Westminster for almost two decades
Worlock was appointed Bishop of Portsmouth on 18 October 1965 and consecrated at the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist, Portsmouth, on 21 December 1965.[6] While in Portsmouth he set about renewing parishes, as well as undertaking the work of developing ecumenical relationships and the building of over 30 new churches in his diocese.
In 1976, he was appointed Archbishop of Liverpool. He was one of the panelists for the first edition of the BBC programme Question Time in 1979. The following year, he convened at Liverpool the National Pastoral Congress which gave rise to the report The Easter People. Important events in his cathedral included the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1982 and the 1990 launch of the Council of Churches of Britain and Ireland.

Sheppard was converted to evangelical Christianity whilst at Cambridge, influenced by Donald Grey Barnhouse, and trained for the ministry at Ridley Hall, Cambridge from 1953 to 1955, where he attended the lectures of Owen Chadwick and Maurice Wiles, and was much impressed by a visiting lecturer, Donald Soper. He was involved with the ministry of E. J. H. Nash. He was ordained in 1955, serving his title as curate at St Mary's Church, Islington, but continued to play Test cricket sporadically until 1963, being the first ordained minister to do so. From 1957, he was warden of the Mayflower Family Centre in Canning Town.
Sheppard worked closely with the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool, Derek Worlock, on these issues, and was often an outspoken critic of Margaret Thatcher's government. The Queen visited both Liverpool cathedrals in 1978 to celebrate the long-delayed completion of the Anglican cathedral, and Pope John Paul II visited both cathedrals during his tour of England in 1982. The bishops worked together in the aftermath of the 1981 Toxteth riots, the 1985 Heysel stadium disaster and the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium disaster. Sheppard also worked with other church leaders in Liverpool, including the Methodist chairman John Newton. He gave the Dimbleby Lecture in 1984, on The Other Britain. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.[1] It is an active Anglican church in the deanery of Widnes, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the diocese of Liverpool.
The tower dates from the 14th century and the rest of the church from 1758 to 1759, replacing an earlier church on the site. Restorations were carried out in 1874, when a northwest vestry was added, and 1903. In October 1977, the church was the victim of an arson attack, leaving only the walls and the tower still standing. As a result of the fire there is nothing remaining of the restorations other than the vestry walls. Following the fire, the foundations of a narrower, timber-framed church were discovered. The roof and interior of the church were replaced by the architects Buxeby and Evans in 197980.
St Mary's is built in red sandstone ashlar with a slate roof. Its plan is a rectangle in five bays with a west tower, a northwest vestry, a northeast gabled projecting chapel, and a south porch. The tower is square with corner buttresses and a crenellated parapet. It has a west door with a window above it. At the bell stage are two-light louvred belfry windows on all sides. The windows on each side of the body of the church are round-headed. The east window is Venetian in style, glazed in large squares, with a cherub carved in the keystone
The roof, dating from 1979 to 1980, is in varnished chestnut. It is panelled in five compartments, and heavily moulded. The west organ gallery, standing on Tuscan columns, is a replica of that destroyed in the fire. The furniture has been acquired from a variety of sources. The font, which consists of a bowl carved with cherubs, dates from the 18th century and spent a century in a garden. The oak pulpit dating from the 17th century stands on Tuscan columns

Middleton beat the King's champion in wrestling and in doing so broke the man's thumb. He received £20, a large amount of money in those times. Jealous of his wealth, Middleton's companions mugged him or swindled him out of his money while he was returning to Hale. Middleton died impoverished in 1623. He was buried in the cemetery of St Mary's Church in Hale. The epitaph reads, Here lyeth the bodie of John Middleton the Childe of Hale. Nine feet three. Borne 1578 Dyede 1623. He is likely one of the tallest people in history. If these height markings are accurate, he would surpass Robert Wadlow's stature

Pigeon racing requires a specific breed of pigeon bred for the sport, the Racing Homer. Competing pigeons are specially trained and conditioned for races that vary in distance from approximately 100 kilometres (62 mi) to 1,000 kilometres (620 mi). Despite these lengths, races can be won and lost by seconds, so many different timing and measuring devices have been developed. The traditional timing method involves rubber rings being placed into a specially designed clock, whereas a newer development uses RFID tags to record arrival time.
While there is no definite proof, there are compelling reasons to think the sport of racing pigeons may go back at least as far as 220 AD. Furthermore, it is recorded in the Mishnah that pigeon racers are forbidden from bearing witness. The sport achieved a great deal of popularity in Belgium in the mid-19th century. The pigeon fanciers of Belgium were so taken with the hobby that they began to develop pigeons specially cultivated for fast flight and long endurance called Voyageurs. History of the Gallery
The Walker Art Gallery's collection dates from 1819 when the Liverpool Royal Institution acquired 37 paintings from the collection of William Roscoe, who had to sell his collection following the failure of his banking business, though it was saved from being broken up by his friends and associates.
In 1843, the Royal Institution's collection was displayed in a purpose-built gallery next to the Institution's main premises. In 1850 negotiations by an association of citizens to take over the Institution's collection, for display in a proposed art gallery, library and museum, came to nothing.
The collection grew over the following decades: in 1851 Liverpool Town Council bought Liverpool Academy's diploma collection and further works were acquired from the Liverpool Society for the Fine Arts, founded in 1858. The competition between the academy and society eventually led to both collapsing.
William Brown Library and Museum opened in 1860, named after a Liverpool merchant whose generosity enabled the Town Council to act upon an 1852 Act of Parliament which allowed the establishment of a public library, museum and art gallery, and in 1871 the council organised the first Liverpool Autumn Exhibition, held at the new library and museum.
The gallery is housed in a neo-Classical building located on William Brown Street (the only street in the United Kingdom to consist of nothing other than museums, galleries and libraries).
The Walker's collection includes Italian and Netherlandish paintings from 1300 to 1550, European art from 1550 to 1900, including works by Giambattista Pittoni, Rembrandt, Poussin and Degas, 18th and 19th-century British art, including a major collection of Victorian painting and many Pre-Raphaelite works, a wide collection of prints & drawings

The building was the former administrative headquarters of the County Borough of Birkenhead, and more recently, council offices for the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral. However, since the closure of the Wirral Museum in 2010, there is uncertainty over the future purpose of the Grade II* listed building.
History
When Hamilton Square was designed in the early 19th century, a plot of land was made available for the siting of a town hall between Hamilton Street and Chester Street. Designed by local architect Christopher Ellison, the building was constructed using Scottish granite and sandstone from the now filled-in local quarry at Storeton. It was officially opened in 1887
The building consisted of a council chamber, offices, with a concert hall and function rooms known as the Assembly Rooms. Birkenhead's magistrates' court chambers are located in a separate building of the same design to the rear. The clock tower is 200 feet in height and displays four faces
the clock and five bells within were manufactured and fitted by Gillett & Co. (at a total cost of £900). After a fire in 1901, the upper part of the clock tower was rebuilt to a design by Henry Hartley. The rebuilding included a stained glass window by Gilbert P. Gamon representing Edward I's visit to Birkenhead Priory in 1277

Tall Ships Youth Trust, formerly the Sail Training Association, based in Portsmouth, is a charity registered with the Charity Commission.[1] It was founded in 1956 and is dedicated to the personal development of young people aged 12 to 25 through the crewing of ocean-going yachts. Thanks to this work with young people, Tall Ships Youth Trust is a member of The National Council for Voluntary Youth Services (NCVYS).
Each year, TSYT supports around 1,000 young people from across the UK through exhilarating voyages.
Tall Ships Youth Trust has operated a variety of craft
it used to own TS KI Sir Winston Churchill and TS K2 Malcolm Miller. These two three-masted topsail schooners are now privately owned and in the Mediterranean. TSYT used to operate a second sister-ship in addition to Stavros S Niarchos, the Prince William. However Prince William was removed from operational status at the end of 2007, to make way for the new Challenger yachts. In 2010 she was sold to the Pakistan Navy and renamed Rah Naward (Swift Mover).
The Challenger yachts provide a flexible approach to sail training, allowing TSYT to scale the amount of sailings relative to demand (i.e. not all yachts need to sail).
The Challenger yachts were part of a 12 strong fleet of Challengers built and raced in the 2000/1 and 2004/5 BT Global Challenge. The purchase of the craft provides TSYT with four stable, reliable and extremely well-tested craft to base a sail training program upon.

Cains tenants Pauline Keady-Williams and husband Dave run The Dispensary, prescribing a cure-all for the world's ills in the shape of medicine on tap from the Upper Stanhope Street brewery, this week finding itself in dire financial straits with administrators being called in this week.
Why go there?
It serves arguably the best beer in town, if they do say so themselves, although Dominic Hornsby, from the nearby Fly In The Loaf, would doubtless disagree.
Who goes there?
The Dispensary's main allure seems to be for chaps, in there to either marvel at their chosen pint in solitude (I come here to hide from the wife, one un-pictured punter told us) or to philosophise in small huddles about the state of the world, occasionally all pausing to marvel at that pint again.

Transpennine, which operates across the North of England and into Scotland, has been cancelling trains on a daily basis for months, disrupting many journeys.
Calls have been made for the company to lose its contract for the service.
Matthew Golton, managing director of Transpennine, told the BBC the operator had a recovery plan to do better.
The government has previously said action will be taken if the company can't be turned round.
Asked about Transpennine cancelling 40% of its services last week, Mr Golton said: It isn't good enough.

In reference to the sex position, 69 has become an internet meme, where users will respond to any occurrence of the number with the word nice and draw specific attention to it. This means to sarcastically imply that the reference to the sex position was intentional. Because of its association with the sex position and resulting meme, 69 has become known as the sex number in these communities

The love locks of Liverpool are used by people from all over the world to show their unbreakable love. These locks can be found along the River Mersey, decorating chains along the river with symbols of love.
Many of them have been inscribed with messages and as you walk along, you notice beautiful and intricate padlock designs along with the different dates such as when couples met, were engaged and married.
The actual tradition is believed to have started over 100 years ago during the first world war. Women would write the names of their loved ones on a padlock in the hope it would protect them whilst they were away fighting. The symbols of love have actually developed from heart rendering moments of not knowing if you would ever see your loved one again.

Jung's work has been influential in the fields of psychiatry, anthropology, archaeology, literature, philosophy, psychology, and religious studies. Jung worked as a research scientist at the Burghölzli psychiatric hospital, in Zurich, under Eugen Bleuler. During this time, he came to the attention of Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis. The two men conducted a lengthy correspondence and collaborated, for a while, on a joint vision of human psychology.
Freud saw the younger Jung as the heir he had been seeking to take forward his new science of psychoanalysis and to this end secured his appointment as president of his newly founded International Psychoanalytical Association. Jung's research and personal vision, however, made it difficult for him to follow his older colleague's doctrine and they parted ways. This division was personally painful for Jung and resulted in the establishment of Jung's analytical psychology as a comprehensive system separate from psychoanalysis.
Among the central concepts of analytical psychology is individuationthe lifelong psychological process of differentiation of the self out of each individual's conscious and unconscious elements. Jung considered it to be the main task of human development. local government administration is centred at the nearby Cunard Building. The town hall was built between 1749 and 1754 to a design by John Wood the Elder replacing an earlier town hall nearby. An extension to the north designed by James Wyatt was added in 1785. Following a fire in 1795 the hall was largely rebuilt and a dome designed by Wyatt was built. Minor alterations have subsequently been made. The streets surrounding its site have altered since its initiation, notably when viewed from Castle Street, the south-side, it appears as off-centre. This is because Water Street which ran to the junction with Dale Street, the west-east axis, was continuous and built up across the junction so that the town hall was not visible originally from that aspect. The structures were removed 150 years after this to expose the building from this position.
The ground floor contains the city's Council Chamber and a Hall of Remembrance for the Liverpool servicemen killed in the First World War. The upper floor consists of a suite of lavishly decorated rooms which are used for a variety of events and functions. Conducted tours of the building are arranged for the general public and the hall is licensed for weddings

Until the mid-1980s, all Crown Court cases were heard in St George's Hall. However, as the number of court cases in Liverpool grew, it became necessary to commission a more modern courthouse for both criminal and civil matters: the site selected by the Lord Chancellor's Department had been occupied by Liverpool Castle between the 13th and 18th century.
The new building was commissioned by the now-defunct Property Services Agency, who were seeking a design which expressed authority and power.[6] Construction of the new building started in 1973. It was designed by Farmer and Dark[8] in the brutalist style, built with vertically ribbed pre-cast concrete panels in dark, reddish tones, and was opened in 1984.
Hearings of the Liverpool Magistrates Court, which had been held at the courthouse in Dale Street, transferred to the Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts in 2015.[10]
The design features towers on the north and south sides which were intended to echo Liverpool Castle. Pollard and Pevsner describe the architecture as hulking and dispiriting, but richly sculptural. The front facade of the building features a four metres wide version of the Royal coat of arms. Cast in concrete, it was designed by British sculptor Richard Kindersley. Located on the side of The Abbey Road bar on Harrington Street in Liverpool, the mural was painted in May 2021 and took 8 days to complete. It measures 18 metres high and 10 metres wide. The piece was commissioned by Derwent Estates Ltd. The baby is said to represent the re-birth of Liverpool and the new hopes and potential of the future following the Coronavirus lockdowns. The underwater element was to try to create an illusion that the building is a pool tank. It also allowed the use of a rich blue colour to help add bright colour to the piece. The name Ethan is chosen by the artist. At the time of painting, his sister was expecting a baby boy, named Ethan.

During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.
Between 14 August and 18 September 2022, Avanti West Coast reduced its timetable, citing unofficial strike action from its employees. However, this allegation was disputed by Aslef, which accused the company of lying and blamed their lack of recruitment, especially of train drivers, for the problems. Trains were running at one service per hour on the majority of routes, as opposed to the three which would typically occur on the London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly route. Following these changes, Avanti West Coast was subject to public criticism

In his iconic song, Paul McCartney sang about the barbers where the Beatles used to get their hair cut in Liverpool. The barber shop, Bioletti's, like nearly all of the places referred to in the song, was not on Penny Lane itself but on Smithdown Place, overlooking the roundabout' with the bus shelter.
A change of ownership meant that Bioletti's became Tony Slavin's, but it is still a barber shop (and now also a ladies salon). Where else could you have your hair done at a reasonable price and share in Beatles history at the same time?
The Ladies salon (upstairs) used to be a flat in the Beatles' days, but the barber shop downstairs still looks much the same as when the Beatles used to sit and wait for a trim.
Beatles fans are always welcome either to have their hair done in the same place as the Beatles
.. or to stop and say hello. Visitors are welcome to look around, take photographs, and sit in the barbers' chairs. In return, donations for the Linda McCartney Centre are gratefully accepted. There are also some unique souvenirs available to buy.

The founder, Thomas Milner, originally a tinsmith and metal box-maker from Sheffield, set up a safe manufactory in Liverpool in 1830 where he set about producing tin-plate and sheet iron boxes with his newly patented fire-resisting composition and was employing 35 men. From 1846, he moved on to strong plate iron safes and chests. Thomas died in 1849 leaving his son William as a partner in the newly named Milner & Son and so rapidly was the company growing that by 1851 they were employing 110 men.
By this time they had developed and patented a gunpowder-proof and unpickable key lock in conjunction with Hobbs & Co..
His son-in-law Daniel Rowlinson Ratcliff had by this time joined the company as a partner. Considerable animosity had developed between Milners and George Price, a rival safe-maker from Wolverhampton with each indulging in very unprofessional practices. This was to lead to an incident when each party was publicly testing the others safes with gunpowder when Milner's representative was over zealous in the charge he placed in one of Price's safes resulting in a fatality. Shortly after this incident William Milner retired.
In 1874, now called the Milner Safe Company, the factory was employing 480 men. By this time they were the largest manufacturer of safes and other security work in the world, a fact which they claimed in the London Trades Directory of 1900.
Most familiar among the company's products must be what is usually referred to as the square church door Milner- which is correctly known as the List 2 and which in the earliest models carried a cast iron moulding on the face of the door shaped like a Gothic arch. The heavier range of cash safes such as the List 3, 4 and 5 were still being made in the 4-corner bent banded body right into the 1900's by which time every other maker had changed to the fully 12-corner bent body. The station is located towards the southern end of Merseyrail's Northern Line and on the junction of two main lines: the City Line from Liverpool to Manchester via Warrington and the Liverpool branch of the West Coast Main Line to London via Crewe
Allerton Traction Maintenance Depot is situated to the immediate east of the station
The station was built at a crossing point between two railway lines that had until then been served by separate stations. The first was the Cheshire Lines Committee (CLC) line from Liverpool Central to Manchester via Warrington Central, which ran from west to east. The second was the line built by the St Helens Railway from Liverpool Lime Street to Warrington Bank Quay, which crossed from northwest to southeast. The latter route became part of the Liverpool branch of the West Coast Main Line when it was connected to a new route from Crewe via the newly built Runcorn Railway Bridge. The original line to Warrington Bank Quay is now closed to passenger trains. The two lines were served by two separate stations in the area, respectively Garston and Allerton (though the latter was also located in Garston)
The first proposals for an interchange station at Garston were made in the 1960s and 1970s, when the Merseyrail semi-underground network was being planned

It is a grandiose stone building on Southport's main shopping boulevard, with an imposing clock tower. Entrance is through the ornamented porte-cochère. Inside the foyer has a large stone fireplace inscribed with the date of the hall. A majestic staircase leads up to the old Cambridge Hall. A public hall created at first floor level, the Cambridge Hall was originally flat-floored with a platform stage, with a raised gallery on three sides and large French windows leading onto the balcony.
In 1875, William Atkinson offered Southport Corporation £6,000 to build an art gallery and library for the town.
William Atkinson was a cotton manufacturer from Knaresborough who frequently visited Southport with his sick wife looking for the refreshing sea air. He eventually moved to Southport and generously donated approximately £40,000 to the town during his lifetime and played an active part in its development. The architects Waddington & Son of Burnley designed the Atkinson Art Gallery and Library, which opened in 1878.

In 1974, when the entire building was converted to Southport Arts Centre, the hall was transformed into the main auditorium. The gallery was removed, and stadium style seating provided in a single rake, facing the improved stage facilities. The smaller Victoria Hall was converted to a rehearsal room and then, in 1990, to a 300-seat studio theatre.
It had been suggested that retail development permitted in the 1980s to the side and rear of the building would limit the opportunity to improve facilities in the arts centre any further. However funding from Sefton Council, the North West Development Agency and the Government's Sea Change initiative from 2008 onwards led to a major redevelopment programme for the building.

An iconic statue of the Fab Four, in their hometown. The Beatles Statue arrived on Liverpool's Waterfront in December 2015. Donated by the famous Cavern Club, the placement of the statue coincides with the 50 year anniversary of the band's last gig played in Liverpool, at the Liverpool Empire Theatre. It's the city's most popular selfie spot!
The figures are larger than life size and weigh 1.2 tonnes in total. They were sculpted by Andrew Edwards who also created the All Together Now Christmas Truce WWI statue.
Take a walk through Liverpool ONE, and you might see where the inspiration for the statue came from.
Look out for the attention to detail, such as an 'L8' on the bottom of Ringo's shoe and the acorns in John's hand, cast from the ones that were picked up outside the Dakota building in New York

Sir John Stanley pulled down the old house in 1406 and built the first Tower known as the Tower of Liverpool. This was used as an embarkation base for their property in the Isle of Man. The Tower stood at the shore end of Water Street.
Water street being one of the original seven streets of Liverpool was originally called Bonke Street'. Bonke' was Lancashire dialect for bank' (taken from river bank). Through the years it became Bank Street and then eventually Water Street in 1520's.
During the 18th century the Tower of Liverpool, between Tower gardens and Stringers alley was the Jail of Liverpool. A large arch joined the Tower to the building on the other side of Tower Gardens and this building was used to house debtors and Criminals.
The Tower ceased being a jail on 3rd July 1811 when all the criminals were moved to the new jail in Great Howard Street. In 1877 two men convicted of robbery were executed in Water Street opposite the Old Tower.
By the end of the 18th century the Tower was in disrepair and was pulled down in 1819 to be replaced by warehouses.
In 1856 the warehouses gave way to the second Tower called Tower Buildings, a large Italianate office block by J. A. Picton. Unfortunately The Tower fell foul to the demands of commerce and was demolished in the early 20th century.
The present Tower Building, designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas was completed around 1908. Walter Aubrey Thomas is not to be confused with his contemporary, Walter W. Thomas, who designed the Philharmonic Dining Rooms , The Phil' and The Vines, The Big House'. It was possibly to avoid confusion that he always styled himself as W. Aubrey Thomas

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CBTEFC - Robert Paisley OBE (23 January 1919 14 February 1996) was an English footballer and manager who spent almost fifty years with Liverpool as a wing half, physiotherapist, coach and manager. Due to his achievements as Liverpool manager, Paisley is regarded as one of the greatest English managers of all time. Reluctantly taking the job in 1974, he built on the foundations laid by his predecessor Bill Shankly. Paisley was the first manager, and is one of three, to have won the European Cup three times. He is also one of five managers to have won the English top-flight championship as both a player and manager at the same club.
Paisley came from a small Durham mining community and, in his youth, played for Bishop Auckland before he signed for Liverpool in 1939. During the Second World War, he served in the British Army and could not make his Liverpool debut until 1946. In the 194647 season, he was a member of the Liverpool team that won the First Division title for the first time in 24 years. In 1951, he was made club captain and remained with Liverpool until he retired from playing in 1954.
He stayed with Liverpool and took on two roles as reserve team coach and club physiotherapist. By this time, Liverpool had been relegated to the Second Division and their facilities were in decline. In December 1959, Shankly was appointed Liverpool manager and he promoted Paisley to work alongside him as his assistant in a management/coaching team that included Joe Fagan and Reuben Bennett. Under their leadership, the fortunes of Liverpool turned around dramatically and, in the 196162 season, the team gained promotion back to the First Division. Paisley filled an important role as tactician under Shankly's leadership and the team won numerous honours during the next twelve seasons.
In 1974, Shankly retired as manager and, despite Paisley's own initial reluctance, he was appointed as Shankly's successor.

He was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge between 1979 and 2009.
Hawking was born in Oxford into a family of doctors. Hawking began his university education at University College, Oxford in October 1959 at the age of 17, where he received a first-class BA (Hons.) degree in physics. He began his graduate work at Trinity Hall, Cambridge in October 1962, where he obtained his PhD degree in applied mathematics and theoretical physics, specialising in general relativity and cosmology in March 1966.
In 1963, Hawking was diagnosed with an early-onset slow-progressing form of motor neurone disease (also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's disease) that gradually paralysed him over the decades. After the loss of his speech, he was able to communicate through a speech-generating deviceinitially through use of a handheld switch, and eventually by using a single cheek muscle.
Hawking's scientific works included a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. Hawking was the first to set out a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. He was a vigorous supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.
Hawking achieved commercial success with several works of popular science in which he discussed his theories and cosmology in general. His book A Brief History of Time appeared on the Sunday Times bestseller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks. Hawking was a Fellow of the Royal Society.

according to NYC Parks landscape architect Arne Abramowitz, Ono believed that there are enough statues in Central Park.
The memorial was designed by Bruce Kelly, the chief landscape architect for the Central Park Conservancy. Construction on the project started in April 1984. Strawberry Fields was dedicated on what would have been Lennon's 45th birthday, October 9, 1985, by Ono and mayor Ed Koch.

The Wirral line is fully electrified with a DC third rail, and has existed in its current form since May 1994 with the start of electric services to Ellesmere Port. It is a part of Serco-Abellio, and is formed of two electrified lines of the National Rail network known as the Northern Line and the Wirral Line which run underground in central Liverpool. The Merseyrail network has 68 stations and 75 miles of route, of which 6.5 miles are underground. Carrying approximately 110,000 passengers each weekday,[6] or 34 million passengers per year, it forms the most heavily used urban railway network in the UK outside London. The network is operated by a joint venture between franchise holder Serco and Abellio, who superseded Arriva Trains Merseyside in 2003. The contract is for 25 years expiring in 2028. Serco-Abellio operate a fleet of 59 trains and as of 2015, employ 1,200 people.
The large comprehensive urban network was formed in 1977 by merging separate rail lines by the construction of new tunnels under Liverpool city centre and Birkenhead. Although financial constraints have prevented some of the 1970s plans for the network being realised, the network has been extended, with additional extensions proposed.
The Merseyrail name became the official brand for the network in the days of British Rail, surviving several franchise holders, although the name was not used by Arriva when holding the franchise. Despite this, Merseytravel continued the Merseyrail branding at stations, allowing the name to be adopted colloquially. Merseyrail is referred to as Merseyrail Electrics by National Rail Enquiries, and as Serco/Abellio Merseyrail by Merseytravel.

Opened as a railway hotel in 1871 by the London and North Western Railway the hotel served Lime Street railway station. The design was by Alfred Waterhouse, containing 330 rooms. The hotel closed in 1933, subsequently becoming Lime Street Chambers for a while before closing once again. In 1994 the building was bought by John Moores University and, at a cost of £6 million, was converted into a hall of residence for students, opening in 1996.

The design was the result of a competition won by James F. Doyle in 1895. The assessor for the competition was Norman Shaw, who was retained as an advisory architect for the project, but it is uncertain what part he played in it. the others are flat-topped and contain casement windows. The entrance is on the second bay from the left in North John Street. The doorway has Doric columns and is round-headed. Above this bay rises a three-stage campanile bearing an octagonal cupola with a gilded dome. On the Dale Street façade is a Venetian window. The second floor contains a frieze.

The church was built between 1811 and 1832, and was designed by John Foster, senior and John Foster, junior, father and son who were successive surveyors for the municipal Corporation of Liverpool. Castle Street, one of Liverpool's most historic streets, contains many splendid buildings, mostly of Victorian vintage, and among them one of the most lavishly decorated is the former British and Foreign Marine Insurance Company Building, nos. 3-5 Castle Street at the Old Town Hall end almost on the corner of Dale Street.
It is five bays wide at ground level, with more numerous windows higher up, with projecting bay windows higher up to the left and right ends, and a modest central portico with some slight emphasis given by a projection of the bay immediately above. Higher up there are five storeys above the ground floor including the dormers are a long balcony and pointy roofs.
The terra cotta sculpture is nicely done and consists, as is often the case, of rather small embellishments so that the effect on such a large building is to give some vague impression of adornment and encrustation rather than individual sculptures which hold their own as additions to the building. The various arched windows however give rise to considerable opportunity for leafy spandrels (see this page for general introduction to spandrel sculpture), rather good corbels, birds, and to revert to the nautical theme appropriate for the building, fanciful fish, scallops, etc.

Exchange Flags is a Grade II listed building in Liverpool, England. It is laid out in a 'U' shape, with Walker House situated on the west side and Horton House on the east side. Walker House (formerly known as Derby House) was adapted during its construction to include a reinforced bunker that housed the Western Approaches Command Headquarters, the command centre for the campaign waged against the German submarine fleet during WW2. With a spire height of 134 metres (440 ft) and 40 floors, West Tower is the tallest building in Liverpool. Nationwide, it is ranked at joint 38th tallest in the United Kingdom but is the tallest in the country outside of Greater London and Greater Manchester. The building commands views across the city, over the Mersey to the Wirral and as far as Blackpool on a clear day. The first five floors are the new headquarters for the Beetham Organization and the remaining floors, apart from the 34th, have been divided into luxury apartments and penthouses.
However, unlike St. John's Beacon, West Tower has no antennas on the roof. Therefore, when considering height excluding antennas, West Tower is the highest building in Liverpool.
The five floors of Beetham's offices are set back between concrete columns and are fully glazed. A glazed lift and stair serving the office are accommodated between raking fins with views to the river.
The 127 apartments are clad in a fully glazed perimeter curtain wall of random clear and opaque panels and are orientated to provide views of both the city and river. The upper penthouse floors are tiered back to incorporate external terraces behind glazed balustrade screens.

It is located at the Pier Head and along with the neighbouring Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building is one of Liverpool's Three Graces, which line the city's waterfront. It is also part of Liverpool's UNESCO-designated World Heritage Maritime Mercantile City.
Opened in 1911, the building is the purpose-built home of the Royal Liver Assurance group, which had been set up in the city in 1850 to provide locals with assistance related to losing a wage-earning relative. One of the first buildings in the world to be built using reinforced concrete, the Royal Liver Building stands at 98.2 m (322 ft) tall to the top of the spires, and 50.9 m (167 ft) to the main roof. Once one of the tallest buildings in the country, the Royal Liver Building is now only the joint-fifth tallest structure in the City of Liverpool.
Today the Royal Liver Building is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the city of Liverpool and is home to two fabled Liver Birds that watch over the city and the sea. Legend has it that were these two birds to fly away, then the city would cease to exist.
Atop each tower stand the mythical Liver Birds, designed by Carl Bernard Bartels. The birds are named Bella and Bertie, looking to the sea and inland, respectively

Ice cream vans are often seen parked at public events, or near parks, beaches, or other areas where people congregate. Ice cream vans often travel near where children play outside schools, in residential areas, or in other locations. They usually stop briefly before moving on to the next street. Along the sides, a large sliding window acts as a serving hatch, and this often displays pictures of the available products and their prices. Most ice cream vans tend to sell both pre-manufactured ice pops in wrappers, and soft serve ice cream from a machine, served in a cone, and often with a chocolate flake (in Britain) or a sugary syrup. While franchises or chains are rare within the ice cream truck community (most trucks are independently owned and run), some do exist.

New Young Pony Club are a five-piece rock band from London, UK. They consist of now London-based vocalist Tahita Bulmer and producer Andy Spence. They shared a love of punk rock and dance music. The founding pair began writing together, originally only for Bulmer to perform.
Spence later assumed a larger role when they decided to form a proper band, so the duo recruited the single-monikered Lou on keyboards, Igor Volk on bass, and Sarah Jones on percussion. The band formed in 2005, and released two limited edition 7' singles ('The Get Go' and this track 'Ice Cream') on indie label Tirk Recordings. Later that year they were discovered by more established Australian label Modular Recordings, and signing a worldwide deal.
The band's name came from lead singer Bulmer's desire to be a part of a club or team at school. Her original idea for the band name was the more concise 'Pony Club', which she describes as 'quirky and kinky and fun'. A pre-existing Irish band had already claimed the name, and the prefix 'New Young' was added to reflect that the band are 'a newer, younger and kinkier Pony Club'. So now we know.

The Pier Head in Liverpool has gone through some transformations over the years. When back in the mid 1980's when I worked in the city centre it was part bus station and ferry terminal. The latter are mostly now for tourists, most locals taking the subway. Its now got a nice water feature and the concrete beefeater is now a swish Chinese eatery. A change for the better. On a sunny day, a nice place to enjoy an ice cream.....

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4660949290 - 'West Kirby contains a large man made coastal lake, the 'Marine Lake'. The structure is large enough to hold sailing events. Swimming is discouraged due to the presence of weaver fish with sharp poisonous barbs. Some of the creatures can be caught by a piece of meat on a cord. I remember yonks ago catching crabs off Cromer pier in Norfolk. If you were lucky then, you got two or three all fighting for a cube of pork! Happy days.
West Kirby is a town on the north-west corner of the coast of the Wirral Peninsula, Merseyside, England, at the mouth of the River Dee across from the Point of Ayr in North Wales.
The name West Kirby is of Viking origin, originally Kirkjubyr, meaning 'village with a church'. The form with the modifier 'West' exists to distinguish it from the other town of the same name in Wirral: Kirkby-in-Walea (now the modern town of Wallasey). The earliest usage given of this form is 'West Kyrkeby in Wirhale' in 1285.
On the lake most days and it must be said in all weathers, you can see windsurfing and many more water related activities including: canoeing
kayaking
and occasional power-boating. In early 2009 it was reported that the lake had undergone structural damage, most likely due to estuarine erosion. Since this report a \u00a3750K refurbishment has taken place to help restore the lake, and is now back to holding water sport activities.
In October 1991 the World Windsurfing Speed Record was set on the West Kirby Marine Lake at 42.16 knots. It was held for two years until it was beaten in Australia.
Notable locals from West Kirby include Daniel Craig, the actor who played James Bond in the 2006 version of Casino Royale, who attended Hilbre High School and Calday Grange Grammar School in West Kirby. Glenda Jackson, actress and politician, attended West Kirby Grammar School.

This music you may remember from BBC Saturday Sport was composed by MES (Mark E Smith) and The Fall. To get a feel for the show, check this out. Unfortunately, his beloved Man City had managed a 'Hopeless as usual performance' in their 0-0 draw against Blackburn.
The Fall are an English post-punk group, formed in Prestwich, Greater Manchester in 1976. The group has existed in some form ever since, and is essentially built around its founder and only constant member Mark E. Smith. First associated with the punk movement of the late 1970s, the group's music has gone through several stylistic changes over the years.
However, The Fall's music is often characterised by repetition, an abrasive guitar-driven sound, and is always underpinned by Smith's vocals and often cryptic lyrics, described by critic Steve Huey as 'abstract poetry filled with complicated wordplay, bone-dry wit, cutting social observations, and general misanthropy (sometimes more implied than clearly stated, but apparent nonetheless).'
The group's output is prolific. As of September 2010 they have released 28 studio albums, and more than triple that counting live albums and other releases. They have never achieved widespread public success beyond a handful of minor hit singles in the late 1980s, but have maintained a strong cult following. The band were long associated with BBC disc jockey John Peel, who championed them from early on in their career and cited The Fall as his favourite band, famously explaining, 'They are always different, they are always the same.'. The Fall were the only band who merited a seperate section in John Peel's record collection.
MES does manage the band like a football team, bringing in new talent and mavericks (many he encounters in the pub in Prestwich) acting as foreman. Dave Simpson's book 'The Fallen' is a great guide to the world of The Fall.
The last time I saw them was in Liverpool 2008 when MES had just turned 50. The band's Peel sessions were finally released recently by Castle Records in the six-CD box 'The Complete Peel Sessions 1978-2004'. This is a good starting point for getting to know the varied music of the band. The lastest album 'Your Future, Our Clutter' is also worth a listen to wet your appetite. Tell 'em I sent you.....

The Manic Street Preachers are a Welsh alternative rock band, formed in 1986. They are James Dean Bradfield, Nicky Wire, Richey Edwards and Sean Moore. The band are part of the Cardiff music scene, and were at their most prominent during the 1990s. They are colloquially known as 'The Manics' or 'Manics'.
The band were originally a quartet: main lyricist and guitarist Richey Edwards vanished on 1 February 1995. In November 2008, thirteen years after his disappearance, he was officially declared presumed deceased.
The Manics released their debut album, Generation Terrorists in 1992. Their combination of androgynous glam punk imagery, outspoken invective and songs about 'culture, alienation, boredom and despair' soon gained them a loyal following and cult status. The band's later albums retained a leftist politicisation and intellectual lyrical style, while adopting a broader alternative rock sound.
Enigmatic lyricist Richey Edwards gained early notoriety by cutting the words '4REAL' into his arm with a razor blade (narrowly missing an artery and requiring seventeen stitches) in response to the suggestion that the band were less than authentic. The dark nature of 1994's The Holy Bible reflected the culmination of Edwards' instability.
'If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next' is one of the best known tracks by the Manic Street Preachers, released as the first single from their fifth studio album, This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours, with lyrics written by Nicky Wire (credited as Nick Jones), and music written by James Dean Bradfield and Sean Moore.
It was released on 24 August 1998 and became the first of the band's two number one singles in the United Kingdom to date. The song is in the Guinness World Records as the number one single with the longest title without brackets. The song was voted no 20 on Channel 4's 100 Greatest Number One Singles, is the group's biggest success on the Irish singles chart (where it reached no 3), and is the only Manic Street Preachers track ever to be released as a single in the United States.
Various works on the Spanish Civil War were the inspiration for this song, most notably George Orwell's first-hand account, 'Homage to Catalonia.' (one of my favourite authors). Wire has acknowledged that he was also inspired by a song by The Clash, 'Spanish Bombs', which has a similar subject.
In March 2009, it was discovered that the song was used on the website of the British National Party as the soundtrack of an article describing 'the violence, hatred, fragmentation and despair' wrought on London by the 'great multicultural experiment'. The choice of this song was considered ironic by many, considering the song contains lyrics such as 'So if I can shoot rabbits/Then I can shoot fascists'. Record company Sony were successfully able to have the song removed from the site on the grounds of unauthorised use.
The BNP later released a press statement claiming that 'the song had mistakenly been automatically streamed on to its site and had nothing to do with the official party' and that 'you can interpret the lyrics any way you want'.
