Three days after the accident, editor Kelvin MacKenzie published an editorial which accused people of scapegoating the police, saying that the disaster occurred because thousands of fans, many without tickets tried to get into the ground just before kick-off ? either by forcing their way in or by blackmailing the police into opening the gates. The next day, under a front-page headline The Truth, the paper falsely accused Liverpool fans of theft and of urinating on and attacking police officers and emergency services. Conservative Member of Parliament Irvine Patnick was quoted as claiming that a group of Liverpool supporters told a police officer that they would have sex with a dead female victim
Widespread boycotts of the newspaper throughout Merseyside followed immediately and continue to this day. Boycotts include both customers refusing to purchase it, and retailers refusing to stock it. The Financial Times reported in 2019 that Merseyside sales were estimated to drop from 55,000 per day to 12,000 per day, an 80% decrease. Chris Horrie estimated in 2014 that the tabloid's owners had lost ?15 million per month since the disaster, in 1989 prices. Sales also declined to a lesser degree in neighbouring parts of Cheshire and Lancashire. It was revealed in a documentary called Alexei Sayle's Liverpool, aired in September 2008, that many Liverpudlians will not even take the newspaper for free, and those who do may simply burn or tear it up. Local people often refer to the newspaper as The Scum, with campaigners believing it limited their fight for justice

Sheppard was born in Reigate and brought up in Charlwood, Surrey. His father was a solicitor, and a cousin of Tubby Clayton, founder of Toc H
Sheppard was converted to evangelical Christianity whilst at Cambridge, influenced by Donald Grey Barnhouse, and trained for the ministry at Ridley Hall, Cambridge from 1953 to 1955, where he attended the lectures of Owen Chadwick and Maurice Wiles, and was much impressed by a visiting lecturer, Donald Soper. He was involved with the ministry of E. J. H. Nash. He was ordained in 1955, serving his title as curate at St Mary's Church, Islington, but continued to play Test cricket sporadically until 1963, being the first ordained minister to do so. From 1957, he was warden of the Mayflower Family Centre in Canning Town.
Sheppard worked closely with the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool, Derek Worlock, on these issues, and was often an outspoken critic of Margaret Thatcher's government. The Queen visited both Liverpool cathedrals in 1978 to celebrate the long-delayed completion of the Anglican cathedral, and Pope John Paul II visited both cathedrals during his tour of England in 1982. The bishops worked together in the aftermath of the 1981 Toxteth riots, the 1985 Heysel stadium disaster and the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium disaster. Sheppard also worked with other church leaders in Liverpool, including the Methodist chairman John Newton. He gave the Dimbleby Lecture in 1984, on The Other Britain. In 1985 he was appointed as a member of the Archbishop of Canterbury's Commission on Urban Priority Areas

The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.[1] It is an active Anglican church in the deanery of Widnes, the archdeaconry of Warrington and the diocese of Liverpool.
The tower dates from the 14th century and the rest of the church from 1758 to 1759, replacing an earlier church on the site. Restorations were carried out in 1874, when a northwest vestry was added, and 1903. In October 1977, the church was the victim of an arson attack, leaving only the walls and the tower still standing. As a result of the fire there is nothing remaining of the restorations other than the vestry walls. Following the fire, the foundations of a narrower, timber-framed church were discovered. The roof and interior of the church were replaced by the architects Buxeby and Evans in 1979?80.
St Mary's is built in red sandstone ashlar with a slate roof. Its plan is a rectangle in five bays with a west tower, a northwest vestry, a northeast gabled projecting chapel, and a south porch. The tower is square with corner buttresses and a crenellated parapet. It has a west door with a window above it. At the bell stage are two-light louvred belfry windows on all sides. The windows on each side of the body of the church are round-headed. The east window is Venetian in style, glazed in large squares, with a cherub carved in the keystone
The roof, dating from 1979 to 1980, is in varnished chestnut. It is panelled in five compartments, and heavily moulded. The west organ gallery, standing on Tuscan columns, is a replica of that destroyed in the fire. The furniture has been acquired from a variety of sources. The font, which consists of a bowl carved with cherubs, dates from the 18th century and spent a century in a garden. The oak pulpit dating from the 17th century stands on Tuscan columns

Because of his size the landlord and sheriff of Lancashire, Gilbert Ireland, hired him as a bodyguard. When King James I stopped by in 1617 to knight Ireland he heard about Middleton and invited both of them to the court, which they accepted in 1620. Middleton beat the King's champion in wrestling and in doing so broke the man's thumb. He received ?20, a large amount of money in those times. Jealous of his wealth, Middleton's companions mugged him or swindled him out of his money while he was returning to Hale. Middleton died impoverished in 1623. He was buried in the cemetery of St Mary's Church in Hale. The epitaph reads, Here lyeth the bodie of John Middleton the Childe of Hale. Nine feet three. Borne 1578 Dyede 1623. He is likely one of the tallest people in history. If these height markings are accurate, he would surpass Robert Wadlow's stature

The town had a population of 102,629 at the 2011 Census, the wider borough around 183,200 at the 2021 Census.
It is 6 miles (10 kilometres) north of the River Mersey, in the south-west part of historic Lancashire. The town was formerly within the historic county's ancient hundred of West Derby as a small settlement in the township of Windle. By the mid 1700s, it had become larger than Windle and (by 1838) it was formally made responsible for the administration of Windle and the three other townships of Eccleston, Parr and Sutton. In 1868, it was incorporated as a town with a municipal borough. The borough later became a county borough in 1887 and replaced by a metropolitan borough with an expanded administrative responsibility for nearby towns and villages in 1974.

A special livery has been created by the East Midlands Railway's LGBTQIA+ Employee Network to celebrate Pride and support diversity in the workplace.
The Pride train features a stunning rainbow ?swoosh' livery also features the tagline ?Lets Roll with Pride' and is now emblazoned to a Class 158 train.
The rail operator has set up six employee network groups, one of which is ?Stronger Together' with an aim of improving the representation of its LGBTQIA+ employees alongside the promotion of diversity and inclusion within their workplace.
Jacob Lane, Duty Depot Delivery Manager and EMR LGBQTIA+ Network Lead said: The idea for a Pride train came about after a discussion in one of our network meetings. We thought this would be an awesome way of showcasing our commitment as a network to set EMR on the right path to promoting Diversity and Inclusion. It's also a great way to show our support to the Pride events taking place on our network, two of which we are sponsoring.
Alongside the Pride train, we have created pronoun badges for any employees who would like to wear one and our Organisation Development & Culture Manager Amanda Elkin, has created a video on the importance of getting pronouns right.
The Pride train will be out and about on East Midlands Railway Regional routes from the 6th of August and will operate the Derwent Valley Line between Derby and Matlock in support of Belper Pride on Saturday the 6th of August and also Derby Pride which is taking place on Saturday the 10th of September. The route has recently been part of a ?500,000 track upgrade project, creating a more reliable railway for passengers.

History of the Gallery
The Walker Art Gallery's collection dates from 1819 when the Liverpool Royal Institution acquired 37 paintings from the collection of William Roscoe, who had to sell his collection following the failure of his banking business, though it was saved from being broken up by his friends and associates.
In 1843, the Royal Institution's collection was displayed in a purpose-built gallery next to the Institution's main premises. In 1850 negotiations by an association of citizens to take over the Institution's collection, for display in a proposed art gallery, library and museum, came to nothing.
The collection grew over the following decades: in 1851 Liverpool Town Council bought Liverpool Academy's diploma collection and further works were acquired from the Liverpool Society for the Fine Arts, founded in 1858. The competition between the academy and society eventually led to both collapsing.
William Brown Library and Museum opened in 1860, named after a Liverpool merchant whose generosity enabled the Town Council to act upon an 1852 Act of Parliament which allowed the establishment of a public library, museum and art gallery, and in 1871 the council organised the first Liverpool Autumn Exhibition, held at the new library and museum.
The gallery is housed in a neo-Classical building located on William Brown Street (the only street in the United Kingdom to consist of nothing other than museums, galleries and libraries).
The Walker's collection includes Italian and Netherlandish paintings from 1300 to 1550, European art from 1550 to 1900, including works by Giambattista Pittoni, Rembrandt, Poussin and Degas, 18th and 19th-century British art, including a major collection of Victorian painting and many Pre-Raphaelite works, a wide collection of prints & drawings

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine buskers have been robbed of their spots, so their music has had to go underground.
But it's not just their music that has been taken, it is also their livelihoods. So this Eurovision, Ketchum UK has created a campaign for buskers from Liverpool to give up their usual spots along the Merseyrail network to Ukrainian musicians, giving them the chance to perform for audiences and keep the conversation alive about this unjust war.
Travellers going through the four biggest stations
Liverpool Central, Lime Street, Moorfields and James Street will be able to enjoy authentic Ukrainian busking music.
Each busking spot has a speaker streaming the artists music and a QR code for passers-by to scan to find out more about the musicians' story, videos about them and to donate to the cause.
All proceeds raised will go directly to Supplies for Ukraine C.I.C., who are working to provide essential, lifesaving equipment to civilians and volunteers on the front lines in Ukraine.
There is an accompanying outdoor poster campaign across the Merseyrail network and all tracks are streamed as a playlist on Spotify.

its predecessor was destroyed by fire in 1933 and the present hall was opened in 1939.
The Liverpool Philharmonic Society was founded in 1840 but initially did not have a permanent concert hall. In 1844 the Liverpool architect John Cunningham was appointed to prepare plans for a hall. The initial requirement was for a concert room holding an audience of 1,500 which would cost at least ?4,000 (equivalent to ?426,000 in 2021)
The concert hall continued to be the home of the society until a fire broke out during the evening of 5 July 1933
The exact cause of the fire was not known
only that it originated in the roof of the building. Demolition work on the building's ruins began the next day
The building of a new hall was delayed by the demands of Liverpool City Corporation, which announced that it would not support the building of a venue suitable only as a concert hall. The corporation demanded an auditorium equally suited to cinema and theatre use. Controversy ensued with vocal opposition to the corporation's stance led by the doyen of British conductors, Sir Henry Wood. A compromise was reached and work began in June 1937
Herbert J. Rowse was commissioned to design a new hall on the site of the previous hall. Rowse's design was in Streamline Moderne style. It incorporated an organ built by the Liverpool firm of Rushworth and Dreaper with a console which can be lowered from the stage
The hall is built with fawn-coloured facing bricks, and is mainly in three storeys. It has a symmetrical frontage with a canopied entrance flanked by semicircular stair turrets. Above the entrance are seven windows that are separated by piers surmounted by carved abstract motifs.

But there are some places in the city that have connections to the famous Fab Four which are lesser-known.
One of those places is Ye Cracke, hidden down a side street off Hope Street, on Rice Street.
Landlady of Ye Cracke, Zaidia Naif, told the ECHO: It's funny because a lot of local Liverpool people can't find the pub but The Beatles fans from as far as Mexico find it with no problem.
Obviously the pub has a big tourist pull because of the Beatles and its connection to John Lennon.
I have known fans to come as far as Japan, Australia, Canada and a lot from America.
Ye Cracke may be a seemingly normal, local boozer to many but to tourists it's known for being John Lennon's favourite watering hole.
When attending art school in Liverpool, former bartenders claim Lennon would drink Black Velvet, a cocktail made from Guinness and on top of sparkling wine.
He also took his first wife, Cynthia Lennon, on their first date after meeting her at a college dance.
Even to this day, a plaque can be found on the wall of the pub, commemorating an occasion in 1960 when Lennon, Stuart Sutcliffe, Bill Harry and Rod Murray attended the pub and formed a band called The Dissenters over a beer.

In 1901, while Scott was still a pupil in Moore's practice, the diocese of Liverpool announced a competition to select the architect of a new cathedral. Two well-known architects were appointed as assessors for an open competition for architects wishing to be considered. G. F. Bodley was a leading exponent of the Gothic revival style, and a former pupil and relative by marriage of Scott's grandfather
In 1903, the assessors recommended that Scott should be appointed. There was widespread comment at the nomination of a 22-year-old with no existing buildings to his credit.
In 1910 Scott realised that he was not happy with the main design, which looked like a traditional Gothic cathedral in the style of the previous century. He persuaded the cathedral committee to let him start all over again (a difficult decision, as some of the stonework had already been erected) and redesigned it as a simpler and more symmetrical building with a single massive central tower instead of the original proposal for twin towers. Scott's new plans provided more interior space. At the same time Scott modified the decorative style, losing much of the Gothic detailing and introducing a more modern, monumental style

By April 1852 the lower sections of the gates had been installed, decorated with a combination of elements from the interior balconies
four great panels of rope-work with central mermaid and trident figures identical to those inside. The two outer panels were fixed whilst the two centre sections rolled behind them on rails where they were hidden from sight while the Home was open for business.
The iron-work of the lower gates, produced a solid, intimidating aspect compared with the much lighter appearance of the balcony railings. The huge mass of iron made an impassable barrier but also a massive weight and it would have taken some effort to slide the gates open and close.

In the Annals of the Sailors' Home, printed in the Home's annual report for the year 1935, against the year 1907 was the following entry: November - Police Officer Locke killed through front gate falling upon him.
Early on the morning of Sunday 24 November, nearly an hour after midnight, Police constable number 324A, Brownlow Locke, of the Liverpool City Constabulary, met his death in a very strange and unexpected manner.
1951: The Gates Move to Their New Home in Sandwell
As part of the repair to War Damage following the Liverpool Blitz it was decided to remove the gates. On 25 March 1948 W & T Avery who had swallowed-up Pooley's and Sons were offered the gates by the Sailors' Home Committee. On 18 May 1949 Avery's made an offer of 50 guineas for the gates, which was accepted on 3 May. 1951.

The complex was damaged during air raids on Liverpool, notably during the May Blitz of 1941. In the aftermath of the war, the financial problems of the owners and the general decline of docking in the city meant that the future of the Albert Dock was uncertain. Numerous plans were developed for the re-use of the buildings but none came to fruition and in 1972 the dock was finally closed. Having lain derelict for nearly ten years, the redevelopment of the dock began in 1981, when the Merseyside Development Corporation was set up, with the Albert Dock being officially re-opened in 1984.
Today the Royal Albert Dock is a major tourist attraction in the city and the most visited multi-use attraction in the United Kingdom, outside London.

It was designed by James A. Roberts Associates in Birmingham. It is 138 metres tall, and is the second tallest free-standing building in Liverpool and the 32nd tallest in the United Kingdom.
When considering the height of the building, it has a 10m long antenna on the roof, making it the tallest structure in Liverpool (including antennas).
As testament to the importance of its design, which was described by Historic England as embodying the technological bravura and spirit of the space age, the building was listed at Grade II in November 2020.
The tower takes its name from the main radio station that operates from it, Radio City and its sister station Greatest Hits Radio Liverpool & The North West

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P6JGHW - The Pier Head (properly, George's Pier Head) is a riverside location in the city centre of Liverpool, England. It was part of the former Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was inscribed in 2004, but revoked in 2021. As well as a collection of landmark buildings, recreational open space, and a number of memorials, the Pier Head was (and for some traffic still is) the landing site for passenger ships travelling to and from the city.
By the 1890s, the George's Dock, where the Pier Head now is, was essentially redundant. Built in 1771, it was the third dock built in Liverpool, and was too small and too shallow in depth for the commercial ships of the late 19th century. Most of the site was owned by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, set up by Parliament in 1857

The site encompasses a trio of landmarks, built on the site of the former George's Dock and referred to since at least 1998 as The Three Graces:
Royal Liver Building, built between 1908 and 1911 and designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas. It is a grade I listed building consisting of two clock towers, both crowned by mythical Liver Birds. The building is the headquarters of the Royal Liver Friendly Society.
Cunard Building, constructed between 1914 and 1916 and a grade II* listed building. It is the former headquarters of the Cunard Line shipping company.
Port of Liverpool Building, built from 1903 to 1907 and also grade II* listed. It is the former home of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board.
Also on the site is the Grade II listed George's Dock Building, to the east of the Port of Liverpool building. It was built in the 1930s and contains offices and ventilator equipment for the Queensway Tunnel.

A huge baby swimming underwater in Liverpool city centre. This mural by street artist, Paul Curtis, is potentially the largest street art painting in the centre of Liverpool. Located on the side of The Abbey Road bar on Harrington Street in Liverpool, the mural was painted in May 2021 and took 8 days to complete. It measures 18 metres high and 10 metres wide. The piece was commissioned by Derwent Estates Ltd. The baby is said to represent the re-birth of Liverpool and the new hopes and potential of the future following the Coronavirus lockdowns. The underwater element was to try to create an illusion that the building is a pool tank. It also allowed the use of a rich blue colour to help add bright colour to the piece. The name Ethan is chosen by the artist. At the time of painting, his sister was expecting a baby boy, named Ethan.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P6JJ2M - John Joseph Lydon (born 31 January 1956), also known by his former stage name Johnny Rotten, is a British singer-songwriter. He was the lead singer of the late-1970s punk band the Sex Pistols, which was active from 1975 to 1978, and again for various revivals during the 1990s and 2000s. He is also the lead singer of post-punk band Public Image Ltd (PiL), which he founded and fronted from 1978 until 1993, and again since 2009.
Lydon's outspoken personality, rebellious image and fashion style led to his being asked to become the singer of the Sex Pistols by their manager, Malcolm McLaren. With the Sex Pistols, he penned singles including Anarchy in the U.K., God Save the Queen and Holidays in the Sun, the content of which precipitated what one commentator described as the 'last and greatest outbreak of pop-based moral pandemonium' in Britain. The band scandalised much of the media, and Lydon was seen as a figurehead of the burgeoning punk movement. Championed by her friends the Beatles, Black began her career as a singer in 1963. Her singles Anyone Who Had a Heart and You're My World both reached number one in the UK in 1964. She had 11 top 10 hits on the UK Singles Chart between then and 1971, and an additional eight hits that made the top 40. Black died on 1 August 2015 at the age of 72, after a fall in her villa in Estepona. The day after her funeral, the compilation album The Very Best of Cilla Black went to number one on the UK Albums Chart and the New Zealand Albums Chart
it was her first number one album. In 2017, a statue of Black commissioned by her sons was unveiled outside the Cavern Club's original entrance.

In his iconic song, Paul McCartney sang about the barbers where the Beatles used to get their hair cut in Liverpool. The barber shop, Bioletti's, like nearly all of the places referred to in the song, was not on Penny Lane itself but on Smithdown Place, overlooking the ?roundabout' with the bus shelter.
A change of ownership meant that Bioletti's became Tony Slavin's, but it is still a barber shop (and now also a ladies salon). Where else could you have your hair done at a reasonable price and share in Beatles history at the same time?
The Ladies salon (upstairs) used to be a flat in the Beatles' days, but the barber shop downstairs still looks much the same as when the Beatles used to sit and wait for a trim.
Beatles fans are always welcome ? either to have their hair done in the same place as the Beatles
.. or to stop and say hello. Visitors are welcome to look around, take photographs, and sit in the barbers' chairs. In return, donations for the Linda McCartney Centre are gratefully accepted. There are also some unique souvenirs available to buy.

Lennon's original lyrics for In My Life had included a reference to Penny Lane. Soon after the Beatles recorded In My Life in October 1965, McCartney mentioned to an interviewer that he wanted to write a song about Penny Lane. A year later, he was spurred to write the song once presented with Lennon's Strawberry Fields Forever. McCartney also cited Dylan Thomas's nostalgic poem Fern Hill as an inspiration for Penny Lane. Lennon co-wrote the lyrics with McCartney. He recalled in a 1970 interview: The bank was there, and that was where the trams sheds were and people waiting and the inspector stood there, the fire engines were down there. The pub has a colourful past, with links to The Beatles and Queen, making it part of rock and roll history. Affectionately known as the Dovey.
Built in the 1800s, the pub was originally known as Grove House, before being taken over by Andrew Kurtz, a renowned patron of the arts in Liverpool and a talented pianist.
After Mr Kurtz died Grove House became an orphanage named The Home for Incurable Children. Back in 2019, Jonathan Maguire, operations manager for Old Ropewalks Ltd, who own The Dovedale Towers, said: The Home became the parochial hall for St Barnabas' Church in 1914 and became a vital part of the local community, providing the area with a community hub during the difficult times that spanned two World Wars.
During the Second World War, the venue became known as Barney's and hosted dances and balls for locals and visiting troops as St Barnabas' Church Hall. John Lennon and Paul McCartney played the venue several times with The Quarrymen in 1957
Paul even sang in the St Barnabas' Church choir, which he revealed during his Carpool Karaoke with James Corden in 2018.
But the Dovedale Towers doesn't just have links to The Beatles, but Queen too. Ken Testi, a music promoter and the manager of a band call Ibex in 1969, spoke to the ECHO in 1991 about his experiences with Freddie Mercury and recounted the first time the future Queen frontman met Ibex.
He added: Freddie used to doss in Beechwood Avenue, Halewood, a few doors from my house, with Mike Bersin. Mike's mum often told the story of her coming downstairs to find Mike and pals all lying on the floor, crashed out after travelling from London or a gig, which included Freddie.
While living in the city, Freddie found a temporary home in the flat above Dovedale Towers. At the time, the tavern was run by the parents of Ibex roadie Geoff Higgins who offered the apartment to Freddie while he stayed north

The founder, Thomas Milner, originally a tinsmith and metal box-maker from Sheffield, set up a safe manufactory in Liverpool in 1830 where he set about producing tin-plate and sheet iron boxes with his newly patented fire-resisting composition and was employing 35 men. From 1846, he moved on to strong plate iron safes and chests. Thomas died in 1849 leaving his son William as a partner in the newly named Milner & Son and so rapidly was the company growing that by 1851 they were employing 110 men.
By this time they had developed and patented a gunpowder-proof and unpickable key lock in conjunction with Hobbs & Co..
His son-in-law Daniel Rowlinson Ratcliff had by this time joined the company as a partner. Considerable animosity had developed between Milners and George Price, a rival safe-maker from Wolverhampton with each indulging in very unprofessional practices. This was to lead to an incident when each party was publicly testing the others safes with gunpowder when Milner's representative was over zealous in the charge he placed in one of Price's safes resulting in a fatality. Shortly after this incident William Milner retired.
In 1874, now called the Milner Safe Company, the factory was employing 480 men. By this time they were the largest manufacturer of safes and other security work in the world, a fact which they claimed in the London Trades Directory of 1900.
Most familiar among the company's products must be what is usually referred to as the square church door Milner- which is correctly known as the List 2 and which in the earliest models carried a cast iron moulding on the face of the door shaped like a Gothic arch. The heavier range of cash safes such as the List 3, 4 and 5 were still being made in the 4-corner bent banded body right into the 1900's by which time every other maker had changed to the fully 12-corner bent body. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHW8CC - The Atkinson is a building on the east side of Lord Street extending round the corner into Eastbank Street, Southport, Sefton, Merseyside, England. The building is a combination of two former buildings, the original Atkinson Art Gallery and Library that opened in 1878, and the adjacent Manchester and Liverpool District Bank that was built in 1879. These were combined in 1923?24 and the interiors have been integrated. The original building is in Neoclassical style, and the former bank is in Renaissance style.
The art gallery and library has been integrated with the Southport Arts Centre and is now known as The Atkinson.
The two former buildings are each recorded in the National Heritage List for England as designated Grade II listed buildings.
History
The Atkinson was built following a donation of ?6,000 in 1875 by William Atkinson, a cotton manufacturer from Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, and a frequent visitor to Southport. The building was designed by Waddington and Son of Burnley, Lancashire and opened in 1878. The total cost, donated by Atkinson, was ?15,000. In 1923?24 the building was extended by incorporating an adjacent bank on the corner of Eastbank Street, that had been built for the Manchester and Liverpool District Bank in 1879. The interior of the combined building was remodeled in the late 20th century, and the interiors were internally integrated. As of 2014 the organisation of the library and art gallery is integrated with the Southport Arts Centre and it is known as The Atkinson.
Original building
The original building is constructed in sandstone with a slate roof in Neoclassical style. It is in three storeys and has a symmetrical three-bay front. The central bay projects forward and contains a square-headed doorway above which is a roundel and a band of three panels. It is flanked by pairs of engaged Corinthian columns, above which is an entablature with a frieze inscribed with ATKINSON FREE LIBRARY and a pediment.

It is a grandiose stone building on Southport's main shopping boulevard, with an imposing clock tower. Entrance is through the ornamented porte-coch??re. Inside the foyer has a large stone fireplace inscribed with the date of the hall. A majestic staircase leads up to the old Cambridge Hall. A public hall created at first floor level, the Cambridge Hall was originally flat-floored with a platform stage, with a raised gallery on three sides and large French windows leading onto the balcony.
In 1875, William Atkinson offered Southport Corporation ?6,000 to build an art gallery and library for the town.
William Atkinson was a cotton manufacturer from Knaresborough who frequently visited Southport with his sick wife looking for the refreshing sea air. He eventually moved to Southport and generously donated approximately ?40,000 to the town during his lifetime and played an active part in its development. The architects Waddington & Son of Burnley designed the Atkinson Art Gallery and Library, which opened in 1878.
The portrait of William Atkinson, currently on display in the local history gallery you can see the plans for the art gallery being held in his hands.
In 1974, when the entire building was converted to Southport Arts Centre, the hall was transformed into the main auditorium. The gallery was removed, and stadium style seating provided in a single rake, facing the improved stage facilities. The smaller Victoria Hall was converted to a rehearsal room and then, in 1990, to a 300-seat studio theatre.
It had been suggested that retail development permitted in the 1980s to the side and rear of the building would limit the opportunity to improve facilities in the arts centre any further. However funding from Sefton Council, the North West Development Agency and the Government's Sea Change initiative from 2008 onwards led to a major redevelopment programme for the building.

Between 1762 and 1833, this was the end of the Sankey Canal, where boats joined or left the tidal River Mersey. A second lock, now filled in, was built a short distance to the west, to enable more boats to lock through with each tide. The locks became disused after the canal was extended to Widnes in 1833. This lock was restored in the 1980s by Warrington Council and now gives access to a marina.
Currently boats can either access the marina or a repair boat yard. Many use the marina as a shelter from the tidal River Mersey.
Because the Mersey is tidal the use of the lock is restricted to high tides as at low tide there are only exposed mud banks on the Mersey.
There is a swing bridge across the entrance to the lock which carries the towpath users including vehicles accessing the boat yard.
When the canal was extended to Widnes in 1833 another lock onto the Mersey was created at that point and this lock closed. Except for a short stretch the canal is still in water between here and Widnes, although there is one fixed pedestrian bridge across the canal. With no major roads crossed, however, this is the easiest and most convenient section for restoration.
There is currently a major new road bridge being constructed across the Mersey near Widnes (Mersey Gateway Bridge).
The Linking the Locks project's aim is to restore this section to navigation over the next three years (starting in 2014), via a joint project between Halton and Warrington Councils and the Sankey Canal Restoration Society (SCARS).
The contractor for the new Mersey Gateway Bridge has agreed to replace the fixed bridge to Spike Island with a swing bridge, and the task will be given to apprentices as a suitable project.

The company claim to be the oldest clock manufacturer in the world, originally established in 1690, and have been part of the Smith of Derby Group since 1965. The claim is challenged by another English firm of clockmakers, Thwaites & Reed, who claim to have been in continuous manufacture since before 1740, with antecedents to 1610.
William Joyce began in the North Shropshire village of Cockshutt making longcase clocks. The family business was handed down from father to son and in 1790 moved to High Street, Whitchurch, Shropshire. In 1834 Thomas Joyce made large clocks for local churches and public buildings. In 1849 the company copied the Big Ben escapement designed by Lord Grimthorpe. J. B. Joyce also installed synchronous electric clocks in a number of railway stations, including Liverpool's Lime Street Station, Aberystwyth in Wales, and Carnforth in Lancashire. In 1904 J. B. Joyce moved to Station Road, Whitchurch. John Edgar Howard Smith (1907?1983), a former managing director of Smith of Derby Group, designed the first and subsequent synchronous electric movements for J. B. Joyce, and their associated electro-mechanical bell striking units.
In 1964, Norman Joyce, the last member of the Joyce family, retired and sold the company to Smith of Derby. During the 1970s, many of the mechanical clocks were changed to use the electric motors made by the Smith parent company.

Its first building was the William Brown Library and Museum building which was completed in 1860 to the designs of John Weightman Surveyor to Liverpool Corporation, (not to be confused with his near contemporary John Grey Weightman)[1] and which it has always shared with the city's museum, now known as World Museum Liverpool. The library was then extended further to the right with the addition in 1879 of the Picton Reading Room and to the rear with the Hornby Library in 1906. All three of these are Grade II* listed buildings and are built in a classical style similar to other buildings on the street.

It serves, via a bus link, Liverpool John Lennon Airport in the neighbouring suburb of Speke, as well as providing an interchange between main line services and the Merseyrail rapid transit/commuter rail network.
The station is located towards the southern end of Merseyrail's Northern Line and on the junction of two main lines: the City Line from Liverpool to Manchester via Warrington and the Liverpool branch of the West Coast Main Line to London via Crewe.
Allerton Traction Maintenance Depot is situated to the immediate east of the station.
As the orbital route had been closed, the impetus to eventually complete the station was to improve public transport access to the expanding Liverpool John Lennon Airport, and also to provide new journey opportunities for rail passengers in south Liverpool by giving easy interchange between Northern Line, City Line and West Coast Main Line services.
Construction began in 2004. Allerton station closed in July 2005 and the new station was built on its site. The concourse, bus station and car park were built on land that was once the home of South Liverpool F.C. An information board situated on the footpath towards the main road explains the history of the site. The station opened on 11 June 2006, the day after Garston station closed.
At the time of opening, the Merseyrail City Line service (which had been hourly at the former Allerton station) was increased to half-hourly. The station also became an additional stop on the Liverpool-Birmingham service (then operated by Central Trains). From 11 December 2006, the Monday-Saturday evening service on the Northern Line was increased to run every 15 minutes, instead of half-hourly as previously.
Initially, many long-distance services omitted Liverpool South Parkway from their timetables.

The Wirral line connects Liverpool to the Wirral Peninsula via the Mersey Railway Tunnel, with branches to New Brighton, West Kirby, Chester and Ellesmere Port. Beneath Liverpool, the line follows a clockwise circular route in a single-track tunnel called the Loop, built in the early 1970s.
The line was created by the amalgamation of several historic railways, and has carried its present name since the opening of the Merseyrail network by Queen Elizabeth II on 25 October 1978 during the British Rail period. It is a part of Serco-Abellio, and is formed of two electrified lines of the National Rail network known as the Northern Line and the Wirral Line which run underground in central Liverpool. The Merseyrail network has 68 stations and 75 miles of route, of which 6.5 miles are underground. Carrying approximately 110,000 passengers each weekday,[6] or 34 million passengers per year, it forms the most heavily used urban railway network in the UK outside London. The network is operated by a joint venture between franchise holder Serco and Abellio, who superseded Arriva Trains Merseyside in 2003. The contract is for 25 years expiring in 2028. Serco-Abellio operate a fleet of 59 trains and as of 2015, employ 1,200 people.
The large comprehensive urban network was formed in 1977 by merging separate rail lines by the construction of new tunnels under Liverpool city centre and Birkenhead. Although financial constraints have prevented some of the 1970s plans for the network being realised, the network has been extended, with additional extensions proposed.
The Merseyrail name became the official brand for the network in the days of British Rail, surviving several franchise holders, although the name was not used by Arriva when holding the franchise. Despite this, Merseytravel continued the Merseyrail branding at stations, allowing the name to be adopted colloquially. Merseyrail is referred to as Merseyrail Electrics by National Rail Enquiries, and as Serco/Abellio Merseyrail by Merseytravel.

Minor alterations have subsequently been made. The streets surrounding its site have altered since its initiation, notably when viewed from Castle Street, the south-side, it appears as off-centre. This is because Water Street which ran to the junction with Dale Street, the west-east axis, was continuous and built up across the junction so that the town hall was not visible originally from that aspect. The structures were removed 150 years after this to expose the building from this position.
The ground floor contains the city's Council Chamber and a Hall of Remembrance for the Liverpool servicemen killed in the First World War. The upper floor consists of a suite of lavishly decorated rooms which are used for a variety of events and functions. Conducted tours of the building are arranged for the general public and the hall is licensed for weddings.

Two years after it opened it was modified to feature the world's first hydraulic cranes. Due to its open yet secure design, the Albert Dock became a popular store for valuable cargoes such as brandy, cotton, tea, silk, tobacco, ivory and sugar. However, despite the Albert Dock's advanced design, the rapid development of shipping technology meant that within 50 years, larger, more open docks were required, although it remained a valuable store for cargo.
During the Second World War, the Albert Dock was requisitioned by the Admiralty serving as a base for boats of the British Atlantic Fleet. The complex was damaged during air raids on Liverpool, notably during the May Blitz of 1941. In the aftermath of the war, the financial problems of the owners and the general decline of docking in the city meant that the future of the Albert Dock was uncertain. Numerous plans were developed for the re-use of the buildings but none came to fruition and in 1972 the dock was finally closed. Having lain derelict for nearly ten years, the redevelopment of the dock began in 1981, when the Merseyside Development Corporation was set up, with the Albert Dock being officially re-opened in 1984.

The complex was damaged during air raids on Liverpool, notably during the May Blitz of 1941. In the aftermath of the war, the financial problems of the owners and the general decline of docking in the city meant that the future of the Albert Dock was uncertain. Numerous plans were developed for the re-use of the buildings but none came to fruition and in 1972 the dock was finally closed. Having lain derelict for nearly ten years, the redevelopment of the dock began in 1981, when the Merseyside Development Corporation was set up, with the Albert Dock being officially re-opened in 1984.
Today the Albert Dock is a major tourist attraction in the city and the most visited multi-use attraction in the United Kingdom, outside of London. It is a vital component of Liverpool's UNESCO designated World Heritage Maritime Mercantile City and the docking complex and warehouses also com

Chairman of the William Brown Library and Museum Sir James Picton laid the foundation stone of the Picton Reading Room in 1875. It was designed by Cornelius Sherlock, and modelled after the British Museum Reading Room, and was the first electrically lit library in the UK.
It was completed in 1879. The front is semicircular with Corinthian columns, and the shape was chosen by the architect to cover the change in the axis of the row of buildings at this point. The Hornby Reading Room (named after Hugh Frederick Hornby) by Thomas Shelmerdine was added in 1906. It stands behind the older building and the interior is decorated in the Edwardian Imperial style

Castle Street, one of Liverpool's most historic streets, contains many splendid buildings, mostly of Victorian vintage, and among them one of the most lavishly decorated is the former British and Foreign Marine Insurance Company Building, nos. 3-5 Castle Street at the Old Town Hall end almost on the corner of Dale Street.
It is five bays wide at ground level, with more numerous windows higher up, with projecting bay windows higher up to the left and right ends, and a modest central portico with some slight emphasis given by a projection of the bay immediately above. Higher up ? there are five storeys above the ground floor including the dormers ? are a long balcony and pointy roofs.
The terra cotta sculpture is nicely done and consists, as is often the case, of rather small embellishments so that the effect on such a large building is to give some vague impression of adornment and encrustation rather than individual sculptures which hold their own as additions to the building. The various arched windows however give rise to considerable opportunity for leafy spandrels (see this page for general introduction to spandrel sculpture), rather good corbels, birds, and to revert to the nautical theme appropriate for the building, fanciful fish, scallops, etc.

The Pier Head is a riverside location in the city centre of Liverpool, England. It is part of the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was inscribed in 2004.
The site encompasses a trio of landmarks, built on the site of the former George's Dock and referred to since at least 2000 as The Three Graces:
Royal Liver Building, built between 1908 and 1911 and designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas. It is a grade I listed building consisting of two clock towers, both crowned by mythical Liver Birds. The building is the headquarters of the Royal Liver Friendly Society.
Cunard Building, constructed between 1914 and 1916 and a grade II* listed building. It is the former headquarters of the Cunard Line shipping company.
Port of Liverpool Building, built from 1903 to 1907 and also grade II* listed. It is the former home of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board.
Also on the site is the grade II listed Mersey Tunnel building, to the east of the Port of Liverpool building. It was built in the 1930s and contains offices and ventilator equipment for the Queensway Tunnel.

The original building dates from 1878 when dockside cranes were converted to hydraulic use. However by 1920 due to the Albert dock being too small for the size of many cargo ships in use, it was mainly utilised for storage.

The image was assembled from about 15 prints taken from different viewpoints one autumn afternoon, in the style of a David Hockney joiner. The Liverpool waterfront is an iconic cityscape and here is shown in the warm afternoon setting sunlight.
A 80mm or shallower lens will have been used here. To get the whole of these really impressive listed buildings (national treasures some would say) in would take a 14mm or wider, and cause much distortion).
An old merseybus double decker adds a bit of an every day feel to it. Although not as iconic as a red routemaster London bus, for a long time it was a mode of transport that marked Liverpool out.
While I lived there, if a bus had not arrived by the time seven taxi's had passed, that was time to take the eigth taxi. (Even if you had already paid \u00a34.10 for your MerseyTravel card).

The Manic Street Preachers are a Welsh alternative rock band, formed in 1986. They are James Dean Bradfield, Nicky Wire, Richey Edwards and Sean Moore. The band are part of the Cardiff music scene, and were at their most prominent during the 1990s. They are colloquially known as 'The Manics' or 'Manics'.
The band were originally a quartet: main lyricist and guitarist Richey Edwards vanished on 1 February 1995. In November 2008, thirteen years after his disappearance, he was officially declared presumed deceased.
The Manics released their debut album, Generation Terrorists in 1992. Their combination of androgynous glam punk imagery, outspoken invective and songs about 'culture, alienation, boredom and despair' soon gained them a loyal following and cult status. The band's later albums retained a leftist politicisation and intellectual lyrical style, while adopting a broader alternative rock sound.
Enigmatic lyricist Richey Edwards gained early notoriety by cutting the words '4REAL' into his arm with a razor blade (narrowly missing an artery and requiring seventeen stitches) in response to the suggestion that the band were less than authentic. The dark nature of 1994's The Holy Bible reflected the culmination of Edwards' instability.
'If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next' is one of the best known tracks by the Manic Street Preachers, released as the first single from their fifth studio album, This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours, with lyrics written by Nicky Wire (credited as Nick Jones), and music written by James Dean Bradfield and Sean Moore.
It was released on 24 August 1998 and became the first of the band's two number one singles in the United Kingdom to date. The song is in the Guinness World Records as the number one single with the longest title without brackets. The song was voted no 20 on Channel 4's 100 Greatest Number One Singles, is the group's biggest success on the Irish singles chart (where it reached no 3), and is the only Manic Street Preachers track ever to be released as a single in the United States.
Various works on the Spanish Civil War were the inspiration for this song, most notably George Orwell's first-hand account, 'Homage to Catalonia.' (one of my favourite authors). Wire has acknowledged that he was also inspired by a song by The Clash, 'Spanish Bombs', which has a similar subject.
In March 2009, it was discovered that the song was used on the website of the British National Party as the soundtrack of an article describing 'the violence, hatred, fragmentation and despair' wrought on London by the 'great multicultural experiment'. The choice of this song was considered ironic by many, considering the song contains lyrics such as 'So if I can shoot rabbits/Then I can shoot fascists'. Record company Sony were successfully able to have the song removed from the site on the grounds of unauthorised use.
The BNP later released a press statement claiming that 'the song had mistakenly been automatically streamed on to its site and had nothing to do with the official party' and that 'you can interpret the lyrics any way you want'.

Creamfields was held in this field earlier this year and possibly the churn of feet has disturbed lots of wild flower seeds. The result is the wheat battling it out with a carpet of blooms.
The polariser brought out the sky, later the afternoon the grey clouds and rain tracked in. A colourfull landscape of wild flowers fighting the planted agricultural barley crop.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HCN8 - Hadlow Road railway station was a station on the single track Hooton to West Kirby branch of the Birkenhead Railway, on the Wirral Peninsula, Cheshire, England.
The station served the village of Willaston. It may be presumed that it was named Hadlow Road to distinguish it from the pre-existing Cheshire station at the other Cheshire village of Willaston, and so named, on the GWR/LNWR joint line between Crewe and Nantwich.
Hadlow Road railway station closed to passengers on 17 September 1956. The track continued to be used for freight transportation and driver training for another six years, closing on 7 May 1962. The tracks were lifted two years later.
The route became the Wirral Way footpath and part of Wirral Country Park in 1973, which was the first such designated site in Britain. All of the station (excluding the westbound platform) has been preserved to give an authentic 1950s look and a short section of track has been relaid in front of the eastbound platform.
The station is designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed building. It is one of two visitor centres on the Wirral Way, with the other at Thurstaston where the platforms remain in situ, but the station has not been restored.

Many of its monuments and statues are connected with big maritime disasters of the early twentieth century. These include the Titanic, Lusitania and the Empress of Ireland. Other associations with the sea are the Liverpool pilot boat disasters of 1917 and 1939 and the loss of the submarine 'Thetis'.
It is a super place for draping yourself around a limestone angel and well worth a train trip from Chester or east from Liverpool.

Until the mid-1980s, all Crown Court cases were heard in St George's Hall. However, as the number of court cases in Liverpool grew, it became necessary to commission a more modern courthouse for both criminal and civil matters: the site selected by the Lord Chancellor's Department had been occupied by Liverpool Castle between the 13th and 18th century.
The new building was commissioned by the now-defunct Property Services Agency, who were seeking a design which expressed authority and power.[6] Construction of the new building started in 1973. It was designed by Farmer and Dark[8] in the brutalist style, built with vertically ribbed pre-cast concrete panels in dark, reddish tones, and was opened in 1984.
Hearings of the Liverpool Magistrates Court, which had been held at the courthouse in Dale Street, transferred to the Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts in 2015.[10]
The design features towers on the north and south sides which were intended to echo Liverpool Castle. Pollard and Pevsner describe the architecture as hulking and dispiriting, but richly sculptural. The front facade of the building features a four metres wide version of the Royal coat of arms. Cast in concrete, it was designed by British sculptor Richard Kindersley. The interior, which accommodates 28 court rooms on 10 storeys, contains strips of brown ceramic tiles in strips between the staircase tower windows

History
When Hamilton Square was designed in the early 19th century, a plot of land was made available for the siting of a town hall between Hamilton Street and Chester Street. Designed by local architect Christopher Ellison, the building was constructed using Scottish granite and sandstone from the now filled-in local quarry at Storeton. It was officially opened in 1887
The building consisted of a council chamber, offices, with a concert hall and function rooms known as the Assembly Rooms. Birkenhead's magistrates' court chambers are located in a separate building of the same design to the rear. The clock tower is 200 feet in height and displays four faces
the clock and five bells within were manufactured and fitted by Gillett & Co. (at a total cost of ?900). After a fire in 1901, the upper part of the clock tower was rebuilt to a design by Henry Hartley. The rebuilding included a stained glass window by Gilbert P. The Liverpool Philharmonic Society was founded in 1840 but initially did not have a permanent concert hall. In 1844 the Liverpool architect John Cunningham was appointed to prepare plans for a hall. The initial requirement was for a concert room holding an audience of 1,500 which would cost at least ?4,000 (equivalent to ?426,000 in 2021)
The concert hall continued to be the home of the society until a fire broke out during the evening of 5 July 1933
The exact cause of the fire was not known
only that it originated in the roof of the building. Demolition work on the building's ruins began the next day
The building of a new hall was delayed by the demands of Liverpool City Corporation, which announced that it would not support the building of a venue suitable only as a concert hall. The corporation demanded an auditorium equally suited to cinema and theatre use. Controversy ensued with vocal opposition to the corporation's stance led by the doyen of British conductors, Sir Henry Wood. A compromise was reached and work began in June 1937
Herbert J. Rowse was commissioned to design a new hall on the site of the previous hall. Rowse's design was in Streamline Moderne style. It incorporated an organ built by the Liverpool firm of Rushworth and Dreaper with a console which can be lowered from the stage
The hall is built with fawn-coloured facing bricks, and is mainly in three storeys. It has a symmetrical frontage with a canopied entrance flanked by semicircular stair turrets. Above the entrance are seven windows that are separated by piers surmounted by carved abstract motifs.

During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.
Between 14 August and 18 September 2022, Avanti West Coast reduced its timetable, citing unofficial strike action from its employees. However, this allegation was disputed by Aslef, which accused the company of lying and blamed their lack of recruitment, especially of train drivers, for the problems.
