Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EME6K6 - Taken in June 2026, this editorial photograph shows a large Restore Britain election placard displayed outside a brick-built home on a council estate in Hindley during the Makerfield by-election in Greater Manchester. The purple and blue sign reads We're Voting Restore Britain , with a smaller matching poster visible on the front door behind it. The image documents the visible street-level campaigning of Restore Britain, the far right-wing anti-immigration party associated with Rupert Lowe, during a by-election that attracted national political attention because Labour selected Andy Burnham as its candidate and Reform UK also contested the seat strongly. The photograph is useful for editorial coverage of British electoral politics, populist campaigning, right-wing and hard-right political messaging, voter disillusionment, working-class communities, housing estates, post-industrial towns and the contest for support in former Labour heartland areas. The setting gives the image added documentary value: instead of a staged press conference or party rally, the scene shows political branding embedded in an everyday residential environment, with the campaign message positioned directly against a home frontage. It can illustrate stories about local political identity, doorstep campaigning, class politics, protest voting, social housing communities, estate-level canvassing, culture-war messaging and the fragmentation of the right in UK politics. The combination of readable campaign text, residential setting, by-election context and named constituency makes it relevant for news, politics, sociology, local democracy, election analysis and features on how national political movements try to present themselves as rooted in ordinary neighbourhoods. The image should be used with clear editorial context, as Restore Britain and similar movements are controversial and have been widely discussed in relation to anti-immigration and hard-right politics.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EMY4D5 - Campaign placard We're voting Restore Britain , mounted on a wooden stake outside a brick-built home in the Makerfield constituency, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the June 2026 by-election campaign. The sign's original patriotic red, white and blue design is reduced to stark monochrome, making the large capital lettering, party logo and domestic brick-wall background feel more severe and confrontational. The image is useful for editorial coverage of Restore Britain, Rupert Lowe, hard-right politics, far-right campaigning, nationalist political branding, anti-establishment messaging, protest voting, working-class estates, and the fragmentation of the British right during a high-profile parliamentary contest. Restore Britain is listed by the Electoral Commission as an authorised party registered in Great Britain, while its own material frames the party around themes such as low tax, small government, secure borders, national pride, traditional Christian principles, free speech and direct democracy. Political reporting has described Restore Britain as right-wing to far-right and as a rival force competing with Reform UK for voters on the nationalist and populist right. In the context of Makerfield, the placard has wider editorial value because the contest attracted national attention around Labour's Andy Burnham, Reform UK's Robert Kenyon, and the possibility that Restore Britain could split or reshape the right-wing vote. The close crop, visible screw, wooden post, house doorway edge and brickwork give the picture a local, doorstep-democracy quality, showing how national political movements appear in ordinary residential streets. It could illustrate articles on election messaging, public displays of party support, culture-war politics, voter disillusionment, political identity, devolution, former Labour heartlands, and the visual language of UK by-elections in 2026.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EDKYYP - A red Vote stock-photo/gotonysmith-Labour.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>Labour campaign banner is displayed in the front garden of a residential property in England, creating a clear editorial image of party political campaigning, voter support and neighbourhood-level election activity. The sign uses the Labour Party's familiar red branding and large white lettering, making it immediately recognisable as a campaign message aimed at passing pedestrians, local residents and voters. The suburban street setting, front garden, fence post, cloudy sky, terraced houses and distant railway bridge give the photograph strong documentary value as an everyday view of politics appearing in ordinary residential streets rather than at a rally, press conference or formal party event. The image is commercially useful for stories about UK elections, local council campaigns, general elections, party canvassing, voter identity, garden posters, political participation, campaign visibility, grassroots support and the way political loyalties are signalled in local communities. It can also illustrate wider themes around British democracy, doorstep politics, constituency campaigning, party branding, swing voters, political persuasion, neighbourhood opinion and the contest for attention during election periods. Because the image shows a campaign sign rather than identifiable campaigners or voters, it works well as a neutral stock photograph for coverage of election season, polling day build-up, political advertising, manifesto debate, local government, parliamentary politics and public engagement. The wet-looking street, overcast sky and ordinary housing backdrop add a recognisably British feel, useful for news, politics, civic life and social commentary. As a documentary stock image, it records a small but visible expression of democratic campaigning, where national party politics is translated into a simple front-garden banner on a local street.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG8YRW - Hale is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Halton, Cheshire, England with a population of 1,800. The village is north of the River Mersey, and just to the east of the boundary with Merseyside. It is 2+1⁄2 miles east of Speke in Liverpool, and 4 miles south-west of Widnes. The nearby village of Halebank is to the north-east.
Historically part of Lancashire, until 1 April 1974 the area formed part of the Whiston Rural District.
The population of the parish is stable with a population of 1,898 (2001 census), 1,841 (2011 census) and 1,800 (2021 census).
John Middleton (15781623), the Childe of Hale, was reputed to be nine feet, three inches tall, or 2.8 m. His cottage and grave are located in the village. Just outside St Mary's Church was a wooden carving of the Childe Of Hale that is said to have been life-sized. It was replaced in 2013 by a 3-metre bronze statue by sculptor Diane Gorvin
Middleton was born in the village of Hale, near Liverpool. According to contemporary accounts and his epitaph, he grew to the height of 9 feet 3 inches (2.82 m) and slept with his feet hanging out the window of his house.
Because of his size the landlord and sheriff of Lancashire, Gilbert Ireland, hired him as a bodyguard. When King James I stopped by in 1617 to knight Ireland he heard about Middleton and invited both of them to the court, which they accepted in 1620. Middleton beat the King's champion in wrestling and in doing so broke the man's thumb. He received £20, a large amount of money in those times. Jealous of his wealth, Middleton's companions mugged him or swindled him out of his money while he was returning to Hale. Middleton died impoverished in 1623. He was buried in the cemetery of St Mary's Church in Hale. The epitaph reads, Here lyeth the bodie of John Middleton the Childe of Hale. Nine feet three. Borne 1578 Dyede 1623. He is likely one of the tallest people in history. If these height markings are accurate, he would surpass Robert Wadlow's stature

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JCC - This image shows a Hank strength tester, a specialised industrial testing instrument manufactured by J Nesbitt of Manchester, a city historically at the heart of Britain's textile and cotton industries. The machine features a circular analogue dial gauge marked with measurement increments, connected to a system of levers and mechanical arms designed to apply controlled tension to yarn or thread samples.
Hank strength testers were used in textile mills and laboratories to assess the tensile strength of yarn, helping manufacturers maintain consistent quality in spinning and weaving processes. The visible maker's marking J Nesbitt, Manchester situates the machine firmly within the industrial heritage of Lancashire, where precision engineering supported large-scale textile production during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The photograph is presented in black and white, emphasising surface textures, wear, and patina on the metal components. Scratches, oxidisation, and softened edges suggest long-term industrial use, reinforcing the authenticity of the object as working machinery rather than a pristine museum exhibit. The exposed mechanical linkage and weight system reflect the practical, robust design typical of early industrial measuring devices.
Images like this are commonly used to illustrate themes of industrial history, textile manufacturing, mechanical engineering, heritage machinery, and the evolution of quality control in manufacturing. The Hank strength tester stands as a reminder of Manchester's global significance during the Industrial Revolution and the skilled engineering that underpinned its dominance in textile production.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JY55P5 - Architecture and features
The original M&LR single-storey offices facing Hunt's Bank Approach were built in the Italianate style in sandstone ashlar with slate roofs in 1844. They were later enlarged and given a second storey. William Dawes built the station's larger extension for the L&YR in 1909. It is at right-angles to the north end of the old station giving the enlarged station an L-shaped plan. Facing Victoria Station Approach, its façade is in the Edwardian neo-Baroque style, four storeys high and 31 bays to the rounded corner at the south-east end. The ground floor windows have rounded heads and those on the floors above are square. The ornate glass and iron canopy along the façade displays the names of destinations that the station served in Art Nouveau lettering. The canopy was damaged by the Provisional IRA's 1996 bomb placed in a street adjacent to the Arndale Centre and was restored four years later.
Heritage features in the concourse were restored during the 2013-15 renovation, they include the café with its glass dome and mosaic lettering which was originally the first-class dining room, the adjacent bookstall, and the original 1909 wood-panelled booking hall. In the entrance is a large, white glazed tiled map showing the former network of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.
Underneath the map is a bronze World War I war memorial with effigies of Saint George and Saint Michael at each end which was installed in 1923. At the south end of the concourse is the 'soldier's gate' which opened to the former fish docks from where thousands of soldiers departed for World War I and where a bronze plaque was erected to commemorate them. The gateway was restored in 2015 and a steel screen inserted featuring a map of World War I Commonwealth grave cemeteries in Northern France and Belgium.
The station received Grade II listed building status in 1988

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2CATBC1 - A DISUSED builders' yard in Latchford has been earmarked for 189 apartments as part of a £10m development.
Planning permission is being sought to construct three five-storey blocks of flats on the former Beers Timber and Building Supplies yard on Station Road.
In total, the scheme would see 33 one-bedroom apartments, 126 two-bedroom flats and 30 three-bedroom units created for private rent in addition to 232 parking spaces.
The 1.75 hectare site, bordering the Cantilever Bridge and Manchester Ship Canal, has been vacant since March 2006 having first become a timber yard in 1965.
Planning permission for 93 apartments and 38 sheltered accommodation units on the site had previously been granted by Warrington Borough Council in 2008.
In its application, Liverpool-based developer Carpenter Investments said: The proposed development will deliver a £10m investment in the area and 100 full-time equivalent construction jobs, and consolidate jobs within the client's in-house management team.
The proposed development will deliver substantial benefits to the area - investment, jobs and much needed homes in an attractively designed development in a sustainable location.
The proposal will enable the previously developed site to be developed, bringing regeneration.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MXFF39 - Harris Tweed is a tweed cloth that is handwoven by islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, finished in the Outer Hebrides, and made from pure virgin wool dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides. This definition, quality standards and protection of the Harris Tweed name are enshrined in the Harris Tweed Act 1993. For centuries, the islanders of Lewis and Harris, the Uists, Benbecula and Barra have woven cloth by hand, calling it 'clò-mòr' in the original Gaelic or 'big cloth'.
Originally, this handmade fabric was woven by crofters for familial use, ideal for protection against the colder climate of the North of Scotland. Surplus cloth was often traded or used as barter, eventually becoming a form of currency amongst the islanders. For example, it was not unusual for rents to be paid in blankets or lengths of cloth. By the end of the 18th century, the spinning of wool yarn from local raw materials was a staple industry for crofters. Finished handmade cloth was exported to the Scottish mainland and traded along with other commodities produced by the Islanders, such as dry hides, goat and deer skins.
The original name of the cloth was tweel, Scots for twill, it being woven in a twilled rather than a plain pattern. A traditional story has the name coming about almost by chance. Around 1830, a London merchant received a letter from a Hawick firm about some tweels. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MXFF3P - Harris Tweed is a tweed cloth that is handwoven by islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, finished in the Outer Hebrides, and made from pure virgin wool dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides.
The London merchant misinterpreted the handwriting, understanding it to be a trade-name taken from the river Tweed that flows through the Scottish Borders. Subsequently, the goods were advertised as Tweed, and the name has remained ever since

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY7XDA - Bridgewater Place, nicknamed The Dalek, is an office and residential skyscraper development in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It is the tallest building in Yorkshire, and has held this record since being topped out in September 2005. It is visible at up to 25 miles (40 km) from certain areas.
The development has been designed by Aedas Architects with the developer being Landmark Development Projects and St James Securities with Bovis Lend Lease being the contractor. The developer of the residential element of Bridgewater Place is KW Linfoot.
It was first announced in 2000 and, following several redesigns and delays with the construction process, construction of the building began in 2004 and was completed in 2007. It became the tallest building in Leeds, by a significant margin, and Yorkshire (although this does not take into account structures such as Emley Moor). Bridgewater Place has a height of 112 metres (367 ft) to roof level. Originally the tower was to have a spire which would have extended the height of the building to 137 metres (449 ft), however this was never built.
Bridgewater Place has 32 storeys, of which two are used for car parking, ten for offices and twenty for residential purposes. There is 40,000 square metres / 430,560 square feet of floor space in the building with 200 flats and 400 underground car parking spaces serving both the residential and commercial areas of the building.
Current office tenants include Eversheds, Ernst & Young, ghd, BDO Stoy Hayward and DWF LLP. Retail tenants include Tesco, Starbucks, Panini Shack and Philpotts. The residential element of the development has proved to be a prestigious city centre address.
The major part of the building's construction was completed by late December 2006.[citation needed] The completion of the entire building was commemorated on Thursday 26 April 2007. A special episode of Look North, the BBC's local regional news programme was produced to commemorate the opening of the tower.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9ERH - Tweed is a rough, woollen fabric, of a soft, open, flexible texture, resembling cheviot or homespun, but more closely woven. It is usually woven with a plain weave, twill or herringbone structure. Colour effects in the yarn may be obtained by mixing dyed wool before it is spun.
Tweeds are an icon of traditional Scottish, Irish, Welsh and English clothing, being desirable for informal outerwear, due to the material being moisture-resistant and durable. Tweeds are made to withstand harsh climates and are commonly worn for outdoor activities such as shooting and hunting, in England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland. In Ireland, tweed manufacturing is now most associated with County Donegal but originally covered the whole country. In Scotland, tweed manufacturing is most associated with the Isle of Harris in the Hebrides.
The original name of the cloth was tweel, Scots for twill, the material being woven in a twilled rather than a plain pattern. A traditional story has the name coming about almost by chance. Around 1831, a London merchant, James Locke, received a letter from a Hawick firm, Wm. Watson & Sons, Dangerfield Mills about some tweels. The merchant misinterpreted the handwriting, understanding it to be a trade-name taken from the River Tweed that flows through the Scottish Borders textile area. The goods were subsequently advertised as Tweed and the name has remained since

Neck ties are generally unsized, but may be available in a longer size. Men and boys wear neckties as part of regular office attire or formal wear.
Neckties can also be worn as part of a uniform (e.g. military, school and waitstaff), whereas some choose to wear them as everyday clothing attire. Neckties are traditionally worn with the top shirt button fastened, and the tie knot resting between the collar points. Among younger men, neckties are sometimes worn as a casual item, tied loosely around the neck, with the top shirt button unfastened

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DG3948 - Built in 1971, it was a celebrated piece of Brutalist architecture at its opening, but quickly fell out of favour. Consisting of an 11-storey office tower, and an In-Shops indoor market on the ground and first floors. Full of tacky clothes shops, greasy spoon cafes, amusement arcades and stalls where you can get a new drive belt for your vacuum cleaner. You get the picture.
Amazingly it is part of a grand scheme to gut the building completely, extend the office tower to a whopping 32-storeys, add a smaller 16-storey one for good measure and repackage it as a state of the art multi-use complex. This was all reported in the Evening Times in 2009, but sadly you can still buy a processed burger in the Savoy Centre.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HG6TBJ - The safety pin is a variation of the regular pin which includes a simple spring mechanism and a clasp. The clasp serves two purposes: to form a closed loop thereby properly fastening the pin to whatever it is applied to, and to cover the end of the pin to protect the user from the sharp point.
Safety pins are commonly used to fasten pieces of fabric or clothing together. Safety pins, or more usually a special version with an extra safe cover, called a nappy pin, are widely used to fasten cloth diapers (nappies), as the safety clasp, while remaining ingestion hazard, prevents the baby from being jabbed. Similarly, they can be used to patch torn or damaged clothing. Safety pins can also be used as an accessory in jewelry, like earrings, chains, and wristbands. Sometimes they are used to attach an embroidered patch. Size 3 is often used in quilting and may be labelled for purchase as a quilting pin. Size 4 and larger may be called blanket pins and deemed acceptable as kilt pins for informal dress, depending upon design and appearance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MG4657 - B&Q (short for Block & Quayle after the company's two founders) is a British multinational DIY and home improvement retailing company, headquartered in Eastleigh, England. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kingfisher plc. It was founded in March, 1969 by Richard Block and David Quayle.
History
1969 to 1979: Early growth
B&Q was founded in March 1969 in Southampton, England, by Richard Block and David Quayle, following the purchase and fitting out of a former furniture warehouse in the Southampton suburb of Portswood. Originally called Block & Quayle, the duo soon shortened the brand to B&Q as stock delivery notes and invoices were already unofficially abbreviating the name.
B&Q were reported to have a customer base of seven million in July 2016, of which it was estimated 75% use the retailer's website to research their desired products, prior to purchasing in shop. B&Q have customer loyalty schemes, such as the Diamond Club scheme which entitles members over the age of 60 to a 10% discount on Wednesdays on many garden products. However, no new customers are able to join the scheme, after changes were announced on 2 August 2018
The retail chain offers over 40,000 products across their three hundred shops and through their online presence. Reports in May 2007 suggested it was the second largest in Europe, and the fourth largest in the world (behind the Home Depot, Lowe's and OBI)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9E7W - A necktie or simply tie is a long piece of cloth worn for decorative purposes around the neck or shoulders, resting under the shirt collar and knotted at the throat.
Variants include the ascot tie, bow tie, bolo tie, zipper tie, cravat and clip-on tie. The modern necktie, ascot, and bow tie are descended from the cravat.
