Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ECEE26 - Conceptual stock photograph showing cream letter tiles spelling IRAN and WAR across a printed political map of the Middle East, with the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Iraq and the Strait of Hormuz area visible beneath. The image uses a simple board-game style still life to communicate geopolitical tension, conflict risk, energy security, oil shipping disruption and international concern about escalation involving Iran and the wider Gulf region. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most strategically significant maritime chokepoints, linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea, and its location between Iran and Oman makes it central to stories about shipping lanes, tanker traffic, oil markets, LNG flows and military risk.
The photograph is suitable for editorial and illustrative use in articles about Iran, war fears, Middle East instability, naval security, sanctions, diplomacy, oil price shocks, maritime trade, global supply chains and the vulnerability of energy routes. The close-up composition makes the message instantly readable, while the map background adds geographical context for readers searching for Iran crisis imagery, Gulf conflict concepts, Strait of Hormuz news, tanker route disruption or strategic chokepoints. The visible place names around Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and southern Iran help connect the image to regional power politics and the security of Gulf states.
The use of letter tiles gives the photograph a strong symbolic quality for newspapers, magazines, blogs, explainers, policy briefings and financial commentary. It can illustrate uncertainty, military escalation, risk analysis, oil market volatility, defence strategy, international relations, US Iran tensions, Israel Iran tensions, shipping insurance costs, commodity prices and the wider economic consequences of conflict in a region where geography, energy and security are tightly linked.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ECEE2F - Conceptual editorial image showing cream letter tiles spelling TRUMPS, IRAN and WAR arranged across a printed Middle East map, with Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman visible beneath. The composition creates an immediate visual link between Donald Trump, Iran and the threat of military confrontation, making it suitable for articles about United States foreign policy, Middle East tensions, air strikes, diplomatic escalation, sanctions, oil shipping risks and the wider consequences of a possible regional conflict. The map background adds news value by placing the idea of war close to the maritime corridor around Oman and the UAE, an area tied to the Strait of Hormuz and major tanker routes.
This still life photograph works well as a stock illustration for editorials, opinion pieces, blogs, magazines and financial commentary dealing with Trump and Iran, US Iran tensions, Gulf security, military risk, oil market volatility, naval deployments, tanker protection, geopolitics and international relations. The Scrabble-style word tiles give the picture a bold symbolic quality, helping editors illustrate uncertainty, brinkmanship, strategic threat, crisis diplomacy and the possibility of conflict without needing a literal battlefield scene. The visible place names and coastline details also add relevance for searches linked to Oman, the UAE, the Persian Gulf, Gulf shipping, energy exports, maritime trade and regional instability.
The image is especially useful for coverage of global oil supply concerns, inflationary shocks, commodity prices, defence policy, security analysis and the effect that political decisions in Washington can have on the wider Middle East. As a conceptual political stock photo, it combines map geography, wordplay and current affairs themes in a readable composition suited to headlines about Iran war fears, Trump era foreign policy, conflict risk and strategic Gulf waterways.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8E196 - Conceptual political protest image showing the hashtag #NoKings and the words National Strike arranged in letter tiles across a map of the United States. The illustration reflects the wider No Kings protest movement in the USA, a campaign that argues American democracy rejects autocratic rule and concentrates on people power, civil rights, public protest and opposition to authoritarian politics. The image works as a visual metaphor for a planned national strike, day of action, rally, march, grassroots mobilisation or online campaign using the NoKings hashtag. It is suited to editorial use about anti-Trump protests, activist networks, civil resistance, democratic dissent, mass demonstrations, civic organising, labour action, public anger, constitutional debate and questions about executive overreach in modern America. The Scrabble-style tiles create a simple, readable symbol of a nationwide message spreading state by state across the country. Useful for stories about protest planning, political branding, viral hashtags, campaign messaging, social media activism, nationwide coordination and the language of resistance in US politics. The map background reinforces the national scale of the issue, while the hashtag gives the image a contemporary digital protest feel. Organisers behind the No Kings movement describe it as a broad people-powered effort opposing dictatorship, corruption and attacks on democratic freedoms, while major news coverage has linked the slogan to nationwide protest actions, marches and rallies across multiple US cities and states. Because protest plans, dates and city turnouts can change quickly, the image is especially useful as a flexible editorial illustration for ongoing coverage rather than a record of one fixed location. Ideal for articles on protest movements, national days of action, strike planning, anti-authoritarian campaigns, democratic values and the public reaction to controversial leadership in the United States.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E424GA - Conceptual political image showing the words NO KINGS spelt with Scrabble-style letter tiles across a printed map of the Eastern Seaboard and East Coast of the United States, with parts of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, the Carolinas and the Atlantic coastline visible. The composition works as a clear editorial metaphor for protest, democratic resistance and criticism of any elected American president being seen by opponents as acting like a monarch or placing himself above constitutional norms. In contemporary US political language, No Kings has become a sharp slogan used by critics of President Donald J Trump and by wider anti-authoritarian protest movements rejecting strongman politics, executive overreach and personality-driven rule. The map background anchors the message geographically in the politically important eastern states and Washington-facing Atlantic corridor, making the image useful for newspaper, magazine, blog and website coverage of rallies, demonstrations, campaign messaging, civic activism, public dissent, constitutional checks and balances, civil liberties and debates about the limits of presidential power in the United States. The handmade look of the letter tiles gives the image a protest-sign quality, suitable for opinion pieces, election coverage, anti-Trump commentary, symbolic politics, grassroots mobilisation, placard slogans and wider discussions about democracy, accountability, protest culture and the language of resistance. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E424H8 - Conceptual political image showing the words NO KINGS spelt with Scrabble-style letter tiles placed across a printed map of the western United States, including California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico, with the Pacific coast and major cities such as Los Angeles and San Diego visible. The composition works as an editorial metaphor for anti-authoritarian protest, democratic resistance, civic dissent and opposition to any US president being seen as behaving like a monarch rather than an elected leader. In current American political discourse, the phrase No Kings has been widely used as a protest slogan against perceived executive overreach, personality politics, strongman behaviour and attempts to place presidential power above democratic norms, constitutional limits and checks and balances. With the map focused on the American West and West Coast states, the image is especially suitable for stories about protest politics in California and the wider western USA, liberal opposition movements, street demonstrations, campaign messaging, constitutional values, civil liberties, federal power and activism. The Scrabble-style tiles create a handmade protest aesthetic that suits opinion journalism, magazine features, newspaper comment, blog illustration, campaign analysis and editorial design. Search relevance includes No Kings slogan, Donald Trump protest, anti-Trump message, anti-authoritarian politics, West Coast protest image, California politics, western states map, American democracy, constitutional government, executive overreach, protest symbol, civic activism, public dissent, political resistance and symbolic opposition to presidential behaviour viewed by critics as monarchical. It also suits coverage of rallies, placards, movement branding, resistance messaging, culture war politics, election season tensions, anti-monarchy language in a US republican context, and wider debates about democracy, freedom, accountability and the limits of presidential power.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E424HM - Conceptual political image showing the words NO KINGS spelt with Scrabble-style letter tiles laid across a printed road map of the interior United States, centred on the Midwest and western states including Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Utah and New Mexico. The composition works as a strong visual metaphor for anti-monarchy sentiment, republican democracy, anti-authoritarian politics, grassroots protest, populist messaging, civil liberty, constitutional government and resistance to strongman rule in the USA. The vintage-style map background gives the image geographical depth and makes it useful for editorial stories about American regional politics, flyover states, heartland opinion, state-by-state voting culture, protest movements, campaign messaging and debates about democratic values. The phrase no kings has become a sharp and memorable slogan for opposition to authoritarian leadership, executive overreach, political personality cults and any perceived drift away from checks and balances in the United States. Because the map spans parts of the Midwest, Great Plains and Mountain West, the image can support coverage of US elections, civic activism, public dissent, symbolic resistance, constitutional rights, federal versus state power, and the language of protest used in contemporary American politics. The Scrabble-style tiles add a playful but pointed graphic quality, making the message feel handmade, accessible and suitable for commentary, feature writing, opinion pieces, campaign analysis, civics education, editorial design and social media illustration. Search relevance includes Midwest USA, American map, no kings slogan, political protest concept, anti authoritarian message, democracy in America, republican ideals, freedom, liberty, constitutional checks, election season, protest symbol, state map background, editorial illustration and grassroots politics.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E54T9J - Conceptual political image showing the words NO KINGS spelled with wooden Scrabble-style letter tiles laid across a printed road map of the western United States. The visible geography spans much of the American West, including parts of California, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado, creating a strong regional setting for a visual message about protest, democracy and resistance to any elected leader acting like a monarch or placing themselves above democratic restraint. The use of familiar word-game tiles makes the slogan blunt, memorable and highly legible, while the detailed atlas background adds movement, territory and a sense of a message spreading across multiple states and communities. This makes the image especially suitable for illustrating stories about the No Kings movement, anti-authoritarian politics, constitutional democracy, constitutional rights, civil liberties, rule of law, checks and balances, executive overreach, public accountability, freedom of speech, grassroots organising, civic resistance, people power, peaceful demonstrations and organised dissent in the United States. Because the composition is rooted in the wide geography of the West, it also works for themes of interstate activism, regional protest networks, western state rallies, urban and rural political tension, federal politics, election season conflict and symbolic opposition to strongman leadership. The warm tones and slight vignette give the image a retro editorial feel, increasing its value for magazine features, opinion pieces, current affairs coverage, protest stories and conceptual stock use. It is commercially useful for articles about democracy under pressure, anti-monarchy messaging, resistance politics, public anger, civic identity, social division, public assembly, protest branding and the defence of republican values in contemporary America. The broad western map also adds relevance for stories linking California & Pacific

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E54THC - Conceptual political image showing the words NO KINGS spelled with wooden Scrabble-style letter tiles laid across a printed road map of the northeastern United States, centred on the busy urban corridor between New York City, New Jersey and Philadelphia. Visible map detail includes places such as Newark, Trenton, Asbury Park and the wider east coast transport and population belt, giving the composition a clear geographical link to the American Northeast and eastern seaboard. The image works as a strong editorial metaphor for public protest, civic demonstrations and organised dissent against any elected leader behaving like a monarch, strongman or figure beyond democratic restraint. Using familiar board-game style tiles makes the message direct, memorable and easy to read, while the vintage map background adds depth, place and a sense of movement between major cities and communities. This makes the picture especially suitable for illustrating stories about the No Kings movement, anti-authoritarian politics, constitutional democracy, constitutional rights, civil liberties, rule of law, checks and balances, executive overreach, public accountability, freedom of speech, election season tension, grassroots organising, people power and the defence of democratic values in the United States. Because the image is tied to one of the most densely connected urban regions in America, it is also useful for themes of interstate activism, East Coast rallies, city-based resistance, symbolic protest language, public assembly, peaceful demonstration, political commentary, opposition movements and culture conflict across the Northeast corridor. The warm tones and dark vignette give the photograph a slightly retro editorial feel, increasing its value for magazine illustration, opinion pieces, current affairs coverage, democracy debates, protest features and conceptual stock uses linked to New York, Philadelphia, New Jersey and the wider northeastern USA. It also suits wider themes

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E54TX3 - Conceptual political image showing the words NO KINGS spelled with wooden Scrabble-style letter tiles placed across a printed street and road map of New York City, covering the urban geography of the five boroughs and surrounding area. Visible locations include Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Jamaica Bay, the Rockaways and nearby Newark, creating a strong editorial setting for stories about citywide resistance, public protest and opposition to Donald Trump or any elected leader seen as behaving like a king rather than a democratic president. The composition uses a familiar board-game style lettering to make the slogan direct, memorable and visually striking, while the detailed city map roots the message in one of America's most politically symbolic urban spaces. This makes the image highly suitable for illustrating anti-Trump protest, anti-authoritarian politics, civic resistance, democracy marches, public dissent, constitutional rights, civil liberties, rule of law, checks and balances, freedom of speech, executive overreach, public accountability and the defence of democratic values in the United States. Because the image is centred on New York, it also works well for themes of five boroughs activism, urban mobilisation, grassroots organising, peaceful demonstration, election season tension, political commentary, opposition movements and the language of public protest in a major global city. The warm map colours and clean arrangement of the tiles give the picture a strong conceptual stock quality, making it commercially useful for news features, magazine commentary, opinion pieces, democracy debates, current affairs coverage and editorial design. It also carries wider meaning around anti-monarchy sentiment, anti-strongman politics, personalised power, citizen action, people power and city-based resistance movements, with New York serving as a visual shorthand for mass protest, political scrutiny and civic opposition in contemporary America.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E54TXA - Conceptual political image showing the words NO KINGS spelled with wooden Scrabble-style letter tiles laid across a printed road map of the northeastern United States, spanning the corridor from New York through Connecticut and Rhode Island to Boston, Massachusetts, and into wider New England. Visible geography includes Boston, Springfield, Worcester, parts of coastal Massachusetts, Long Island Sound and the dense urban network of the US Northeast, giving the composition a strong editorial link to East Coast politics, protest routes, civic mobilisation and regional dissent. The image works as a visual metaphor for No Kings marches, anti-authoritarian protest and public resistance to any elected leader acting like a monarch or placing themselves above democratic restraint. The use of game tiles makes the slogan blunt, memorable and highly legible, while the vintage map background adds place, movement and real-world context. It is well suited to stories about American democracy, constitutional rights, civil liberties, rule of law, checks and balances, executive overreach, public accountability, election season tension, grassroots organising, peaceful demonstration and symbolic protest language in the United States. Because the map centres on New England and the greater Boston to New York axis, the image is especially useful for coverage of rallies, marches and civic demonstrations in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York State and the wider northeastern seaboard. Warm tones and a slight vignette give the picture a retro editorial feel, making it commercially strong for news features, magazine commentary, opinion pieces, democracy debates, protest coverage, current affairs analysis and conceptual stock uses about regional activism, citizen action, urban political culture, public anger, social tension and the defence of republican values in contemporary America, especially across the Northeast corridor.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T3EFRK - Just Stop Oil is a British environmental activist group. Using civil resistance, direct action, vandalism and traffic obstruction, the group aims for the British government to commit to ending new fossil fuel licensing and production. The group was founded in February 2022 and began protesting at English oil terminals in April 2022.
The group has gained both criticism and approval of its methods of activism, which have included vandalism and obstructing traffic.
Just Stop Oil opposes the United Kingdom granting new fossil fuel licensing and production agreements
on its website, it calls for the Government of the United Kingdom to stop all future consents and licensing agreements related to the development, exploration, and production of fossil fuels in the country. The group supports investment in renewable energy, and says that buildings need to have better thermal insulation to avoid wasting energy.
The group describes itself as non-hierarchical, with activists in the group operating in autonomous blocs that share resources but have no formal leadership.
The group favours nonviolent direct action and civil resistance and follows an approach of general social disruption, similar to the methods of climate activist groups Extinction Rebellion and Insulate Britain, although favouring cultural institutions as protest targets

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3YAKB - Walthamstow Central is a London Underground and London Overground interchange station in the town of Walthamstow in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, north-east London. It is the northern terminus of the Victoria line following Blackhorse Road and is the second of five stations on the Chingford branch of the Lea Valley lines operated by London Overground since 2015, 6 miles 16 chains (10.0 km) from London Liverpool Street between St. James Street and Wood Street. The two lines have separate platforms at different levels.
The station is in Travelcard Zone 3. It linked to Walthamstow Queen's Road station on the Gospel Oak to Barking line by a broad footpath, Ray Dudley Way. Walthamstow Central is the closest tube station to Walthamstow Market, the longest outdoor market in Europe.
London Overground - The station was opened by the Great Eastern Railway (GER) as Hoe Street in 1870 when a line was opened from Lea Bridge to a temporary station called Shern Hall Street which was east of the Hoe Street station. The line to London, that the Chingford branch uses today was opened two years later in 1872 from Hall Farm Junction to Bethnal Green, with the branch also being extended north to Chingford in 1873.
The GER amalgamated with several other railways to create the London and North Eastern Railway at the beginning of 1923.
In 1948 the railways were nationalised and responsibility for operating the station fell to British Railways (Eastern Region).
The line was electrified in the late 1950s
The underground station, like many stations on the Victoria line, was built to a low budget. White ceiling panels were never fixed to the ceilings above the platforms
instead the steel tunnel segments were painted black and used to support the fixtures and fittings, cutting lighting levels. A concrete stairway sits between two escalators instead of a third
this economy caused a disruptive station closure for several weeks in 2004 when both escalators went out of service.

The site is an important flood relief plain, open space and local amenity for the town of Godalming
The history of the site as flood meadows goes back to Norman times although over the years the area has been reduced in size by adjoining development and is now about 32ha. The hydrology of the site was changed by the construction of Hell Ditch as a relief channel during the fifteenth century, the Wey navigation channel in the eighteenth century and the construction of the railway in the nineteenth century. The site is a locally designated Site of Nature Conservation Importance for its plant communities and grassland flora, including Meadow Saxifrage, Black Knapweed and Meadow Barley. It is also important for its wetland invertebrates and birds. Part of the area is also categorised as an Area of High Archaeological Potential and designated as an Area of Strategic Visual Importance by Waverley Borough Council and the whole area is registered common land with public rights of access.
It is important that the meadows continue to be managed both as an uninterrupted
flood plain and for its landscape, amenity and wildlife. The Council are producing a management plan for the site to guide management over the next ten years.
Although not nationally designated the area has high local importance as a flood plain (reducing the risk of flooding to adjoining parts of the town) and for its biological and archaeological interest and landscape. It is also valuable amenity land, heavily used and much loved by the local community as an open space for walking, dog walking and nature study
For all the above interests, it is important that the site be retained as open grassland, as without management, it would speedily revert to scrub and woodland. The most sustainable and traditional management is by grazing

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KG46KA - Lymm voters set to be removed from Warrington election map
Voters in Lymm will no longer elect an MP for Warrington should a new scheme be approved.
But revised proposals for new electoral boundaries will mean residents of Thelwall will still be in the Warrington South constituency.
The Boundary Commission is currently reviewing all boundaries across the country.
Its initial suggestion was that Lymm and Thelwall move to the Tatton ward covering Knutsford and other parts of Cheshire.
However following a long consultation period, a final plan has been revealed. It means Lymm will still be moved from Warrington South to Tatton on the electoral map.
Thelwall will stay in Warrington South, where Conservative Andy Carter is currently MP.
With an electorate of 86,422, the number of voters in Warrington South is considerably above the permitted electorate range.
A new month-look consultation will now take place before a final report is sent to Parliament to consider in the summer.
Tim Bowden, Secretary to the Boundary Commission for England, said: Today's publication is the culmination of months of analysis and we have revised nearly half of our initial proposals based on what people have told us. We now believe we are close to the best map of constituencies that can be achieved under the rules we are working to.
However, we still want people to tell us what they think of this latest map before we submit our final recommendations to Parliament next year. This is our final consultation and I encourage you to participate in the 2023 Boundary Review.
Objections were received about Lymm no longer being included in a Warrington constituency but also 'appreciable support' for the proposals.
Andy Carter provided evidence that 'Thelwall is an integral part of central Warrington, and has limited connections or community ties with Lymm, despite parts being in the same ward'.
He proposed that the Lymm North & Thelwall ward be split in order to retain more electors

The UK will scrap the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the European Union's data privacy regime, and replace it with an alternative system in the UK, the digital and culture secretary Michelle Donelan has told the Conservative Party conference.
Donelan said the proposed new system, details of which have not yet been revealed, will be simpler and clearer for businesses to navigate.
No longer will our businesses be shackled by lots of unnecessary red tape, said Donelan. We will be replacing GDPR with our own business and consumer-friendly British data protection system.
Our plan will protect consumer privacy and keep their data safe, whilst retaining our data adequacy so businesses can trade freely.
The GDPR, which aims to enhance individuals' rights to their own personal data, took effect across the UK, the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA) in May 2018. It applies to all businesses that process data held by anyone in these regions, regardless of where the business is based.
The Data Reform Bill introduced in the summer is on hold while ministers review their approach. Nadine Norris, the former digital and culture secretary, said in June that measures in the bill would increase financial penalties for those pestering people with nuisance calls and minimise the number of cookie pop-ups people see on the internet.
Donelan's speech in Birmingham came after the prime minister announced the exemption of tens of thousands of employers from reporting obligations such as gender pay gap reporting as part of a sweeping package of reforms to cut red tape.
Small and medium-sized businesses with fewer than 250 employees are currently exempt from regulatory requirements such as gender pay gap and executive pay ratio reporting.
The government yesterday increased this threshold to 500 employees for all new regulations under development and said that it would apply this to retained EU law

It saw continued use until 19 July 1985 when it was decommissioned for a redesign of Crewe station and its track layout and signalling.
Location
Crewe North Junction signal box is located on the junction to the North of Crewe railway station between the Chester Lines and the West Coast Main Line. The signal box can also see the lines to and from Manchester and Sandbach and all the platforms on the north side of the station. The signal box, still at its original site, is located in Crewe Heritage Centre where there are now demonstrations and simulations of the signalling in the North Junction box by a team of signallers.
Design
Crewe North Junction signal box contained a lever frame of the Westinghouse Style 'L' design (Westinghouse is now part of Invensys Rail) which was commissioned with Crewe South Junction signal box, which was of the same design. Crewe North Junction signal box was built to a non-standard ARP design, with 15 thick reinforced concrete walls and an 18 thick concrete roof. This was due to it being commissioned in 1940 during World War II so it was built to survive an air raid.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JX2W4Y - Crewe Heritage Centre is a railway museum located in Crewe, England. Managed by the Crewe Heritage Trust, the museum is located between the railway station and the town centre
the site was the location of the 'Old Works' which was demolished in the early 1980s.
History
The centre was established in the old London, Midland and Scottish Railway yard, which was once part of Crewe Works, between the junction to Chester and the West Coast Main Line. It was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, on 24 July 1987. It was renamed in 1992 as Crewe Railway Age by the owning registered charity but, after the management of the centre was taken over by a new group of volunteers, the museum returned to its original name of Crewe Heritage Centre in early 2008.
Exhibits
The centre has a series of exhibits, ranging from the only surviving APT-P train, miniature railways, three open signal boxes (Crewe Station A, Crewe North Junction and Exeter West) and a varied collection of standard gauge steam, diesel and electric locomotives, as well as occasional visiting locomotives. The Main Exhibition Hall features many artefacts and exhibits associated with Crewe, from its locomotive and carriage construction to its famous junction railway station. Brake Van rides are available to the public during special events.
Advanced Passenger Train
APT No.370 003/006 at Crewe Heritage Centre
Built by British Rail (BR) the 1970s and 1980s, this Class 370 Advanced Passenger Train (APT) is the only surviving APT set. Numbered 370 003/006, it is open at all times with an occasional cafe run from the original buffet car (selected days only). The APT-P museum can be found inside one of the carriages, with photographs on display from the APT project

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K0PRNF - The Timex Corporation established itself as a major employer in Dundee after World War II due to generous incentives by local government. It set up at two campuses in the city: one at Milton and another at Camperdown. These two facilities were divided along gender lines and speciality. The Milton plant was 60 per cent male and predominantly produced tools and components. Camperdown however was 80 per cent female and did the assembly work. In 1966, Timex was the third largest single employer in Dundee, and the single largest employer of women. It peaked at 6,000 total workers in 1974, which made it one of the city's largest employers and gave it a unique place in the culture of Dundee.
Dundee's other large employer of women in the mid to late 20th century was the jute industry. However, Timex's assembly line paid significantly better, making it a more attractive option for many young women. Additionally, as jute manufacturing contracted in the city in the 1950s and 1960s, Timex absorbed much of the skilled workforce. These jobs offered better pay and conditions
for the men they doubled their earnings
The 1993 Dundee Timex strike was a major industrial dispute which took place in Dundee, Scotland, in 1993. The dispute, which was notable for its level of picket-line violence and the involvement of women, ended with the closure of the Timex plant in the city after 47 years. It's considered by historians to be the last of the large industrial disputes of late 20th century Britain.
In early January 1993, there were proposed layoffs at the factory. A ballot for strike action came out at 92% in favour, while requests for negotiation and arbitration were ignored. On 29 January, the workers came out. They offered to return to work on 17 February
however, they were told that there would be a cut of 10% across the board, which was refused. On 28 August 1993, the factory shut, following six months of industrial unrest.

BEGINNING AS ALPINA GERMANY
The name Dugena is one of Germany's most famous watch brands. The roots of the company lie in Switzerland, namely with the Swiss watchmaker association Corporation d'Horlogers Suisse, which was founded in 1883 by Gottlieb Hauser. This was called Union Horlogère from 1901 and presented itself at this time with the brand name Alpina, which was first used as the name of a proprietary caliber.
RENAMING OF THE GERMAN ALPINA TO DUGENA
From about 1909, there is a branch in Glashütte, which bears the name Präcisions-Uhrenfabrik Alpina. 1917 the Deutsche Uhrmachergenossenschaft Alpina (German watchmaker cooperative Alpina) is created by the concentration of the watch factories Biel-Geneva and Glashütte in Eisenach. 1927 their headquarters is moved to Berlin.
During World War II, the Allies prohibit the Union Horlogère to continue to market in Germany under the name Alpina. Therefore, 1942 in Berlin it is decided to rename Alpina into DUGENA - Deutsche Uhrmacher-Genossenschaft Alpina (German watchmaking cooperative Alpina). As a unique trademark the circle in the triangle is chosen, under which the new brand achieves a high level of awareness.
GREAT SUCCESS AFTER THE WAR
1948, the headquarters of Dugena, which had been in the eastern part of Berlin, is moved to Darmstadt. Under the successful management of the director Willi Tempel Dugena becomes a byword for reliable and modern quality watches in West Germany.
The years of the Wirtschaftswunder (German economic miracle after the war) as well as the 1960s and the 1970s bring unparalleled success to the company. Both with ladies watches as with men's watches the brand gaines a considerable reputation. As one of only very few watch manufacturers Dugena is not affected by the quartz crisis, as it manages to establish itself with high quality quartz collections and is thereby open to new buyer generations. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K16ATA - The Northern line is a London Underground line that runs from North London to South London. It is printed in black on the Tube map. The Northern line is unique on the Underground network in having two different routes through central London, two southern branches and two northern branches. Despite its name, it does not serve the northernmost stations on the Underground, though it does serve the southernmost station at Morden, the terminus of one of the two southern branches.
The line's northern termini, all in the London Borough of Barnet, are at Edgware and High Barnet
Mill Hill East is the terminus of a single-station branch line off the High Barnet branch. The two main northern branches run south to join at Camden Town where two routes, one via Charing Cross in the West End and the other via Bank in the City, continue to join at Kennington in Southwark. At Kennington, the line again divides into two branches, one to each of the southern termini at Morden, in the borough of Merton, and Battersea Power Station in Wandsworth.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JC75TM - Citizen Watch Co Ltd ( Shichizun tokei Kabushiki-gaisha ) is an electronics company primarily known for its watches and is the core company of a Japanese global corporate group based in Nishitokyo, Tokyo, Japan. In addition to Citizen brand watches, it is the parent of American watch company Bulova, and is also known for manufacturing small electronics such as calculators.
History
The company was founded in 1930 by Japanese and Swiss investors. It took over Shokosha Watch Research Institute (founded in 1918) and some facilities of the assembly plant opened in Yokohama in 1912 by the Swiss watchmaker Rodolphe Schmid.
The brand Citizen was first registered in Switzerland by Schmid in 1918 for watches he sold in Japan. The development of this brand was supported in the 1920s by Count Gotō Shinpei with his hope that watches could become affordable to the general public. The growth of Citizen until World War II relied on technology transfer from Switzerland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JC75TN - HMT set up a watch manufacturing Unit at Bangalore in collaboration with M/s Citizen Watch Co., Japan in 1961. The first batch of mechanical (hand wound) wrist watches manufactured here was released by the then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. The most popular mechanical watch was HMT Janata. Other mechanical watch styles included HMT Pilot, HMT Jhalak (Semi Skeletal), HMT Sona, HMT Braille.
In 1972, HMT expanded its watch manufacturing capacity with a set up alongside the Bangalore Factory to manufacture additional watches. In 1975, the watch factory at Bangalore was further expanded to manufacture main spring, hair spring and shock absorber components. HMT set up additional manufacturing facilities to produce watch components sets at Tumkur in 1978 and at Ranibagh in 1985. The factory at Tumkur was partially converted to manufacture quartz analog watches in collaboration with M/S Citizen Watch Co, Japan. To cater to the niche market, a specialised watch case manufacturing facility was set up at Bangalore in 1983.
Since 1985, HMT Watches had been involved in making floral clocks, solar clocks, international clocks and tower locks, most popular among them being the garden clock in Bangalore. In the year 2000, HMT Watch Business group was re-structured as HMT Watches Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of HMT Limited.
In September 2014, the Government of India shut down HMT operations in a phased manner. By late 2016, the website for HMT watches was taken down

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JC75XM - PRIM is a Czech trademark for a range of watches. The brand is now being used by the two Czech watches manufacturers.
In 1949, the subsidiary of company Chronotechna Šternberk was established in Nové Město nad Metují, specializing in the production of personal watches (wristwatches and pocket watches). The first prototype watches were made in 1954 and were marked 'Spartak', the 'PRIM' brand was registered in 1956, the serial production started in 1957, thus Czechoslovakia has become one of only twelve countries in the world capable of producing wrist watches. It was the only manufacturer of watches in Czechoslovakia, reaching about half a million watches produced annually just before the Velvet Revolution.
The Elton hodinářská manufacturer in Nové Město nad Metují always produced watches with this brand, but the brand itself, including the logotype, was owned by the parent company Chronotechna. Chronotechna was after 1989 privatized separately

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A4PJM1 - Fontaines D.C. are a post-punk rock band from Dublin, Ireland. The band released their debut studio album, Dogrel, on April 12, 2019
Carlos O'Connell, Conor Curley, Conor Deegan, Grian Chatten, and Tom Coll met in Dublin while attending music college at British and Irish Modern Music Institute in Liberties, Dublin. They bonded over a common love of poetry and collectively released two collections of poetry, one called Vroom, inspired by the Beat poets (Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg) and another called Winding, inspired by Irish poets (Patrick Kavanagh, James Joyce, W. B. Yeats). None of the published poems were translated into songs, but the track Television Screens off their debut Dogrel started out as a poem and was turned into a song.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RPGER3 - The City of Manchester Stadium (currently known as the Etihad Stadium for sponsorship reasons) is the home of Premier League club Manchester City, with a domestic football capacity of 55,000, making it the 6th-largest football stadium in England and ninth-largest in the United Kingdom.
Built to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the stadium has since staged the 2008 UEFA Cup final, England football internationals, rugby league matches, a boxing world title fight, the England rugby union team's final group match of the 2015 Rugby World Cup and summer music concerts during the football off-season.
The stadium, originally proposed as an athletics arena in Manchester's bid for the 2000 Summer Olympics, was converted after the 2002 Commonwealth Games from a 38,000 capacity arena to a 48,000 seat football stadium at a cost to the city council of £22 million and to Manchester City of £20 million. Manchester City F.C. agreed to lease the stadium from Manchester City Council and moved there from Maine Road in the summer of 2003.
The stadium was built by Laing Construction at a cost of £112 million and was designed and engineered by Arup, whose design incorporated a cable-stayed roof structure and supported entirely by twelve exterior masts and cables. The stadium design has received much praise and many accolades, including an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2004 for its innovative inclusive building design and a special award in 2003 from the Institution of Structural Engineers for its unique structural design.
In August 2015, a 7,000 seat third tier on the South Stand was completed, in time for the start of the 201516 football season. The expansion was designed to be in keeping with the existing roof design

the only maps produced by them during WW2 (19391945) were war maps of Europe
until 1962, the Published By address was 24 Grays Inn Road, Holborn, London

in 1972, the company name was changed from Geographers' Map Company to Geographers' AZ Map Company.
About Motley creator:
Hailing from and currently residing in Manchester. I'm incredibly passionate about my city. The hope is that I can do my part to make it an interesting place to live.
Besides being best known for my street art, I enjoy working with the best possible medium to execute an idea. In true Motley fashion. Meaning mismatched and irregular. My work is less rooted in a common visual style and more based on the independent reaction to what inspired me in the first place.
I take inspiration from many sources. Elements of public space such as advertisements and signage are of particular interest. Given that street art is technically illegal, I'm fascinated by the visual elements of the street that are permitted.
My dream job would either be mayor of Manchester or Ikea bookshelf instructions designer.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHB6YM - Victoria line is a London Underground line that runs between Brixton in south London and Walthamstow Central in the north-east, via the West End. It is printed in light blue on the Tube map and is one of the only two lines on the network to run completely underground, the other being the Waterloo & City line.
The line was constructed in the 1960s and was the first entirely new Underground line in London for 50 years. It was designed to reduce congestion on other lines, particularly the Piccadilly line and the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line. The first section, from Walthamstow Central to Highbury & Islington, opened in September 1968 and an extension to Warren Street followed in December. The line was completed to Victoria station in March 1969 and was opened by Queen Elizabeth II who rode a train from Green Park to Victoria. The southern extension to Brixton opened in 1971, and Pimlico station was added in 1972.
The Victoria line is operated using automatic train operation, but all trains have drivers. The 2009 Tube Stock replaced the original 1967 Tube Stock trains. The line serves 16 stations and all but Pimlico provide interchanges with other Transport for London or National Rail services. The line, the most intensively used on the Underground, is used by over 200 million passengers each year, making it the sixth-busiest tube line
The 3.5-mile (5.6 km) extension from Victoria to Brixton with stations at Vauxhall and Stockwell was approved in March 1966. Preparatory work had started at Bessborough Gardens near Vauxhall Bridge Road in May 1967. The contract was awarded on 4 August 1967. A proposal to build Pimlico tube station received Government approval on 28 June 1968. In July, the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Edinburgh visited tunnel workings under Vauxhall Park.
The Brixton extension was bored using the older Greathead shield. Although slower, use of the tunnelling shield allowed easier digging through the gravel strata south of the Thames

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDWT7P - City Sightseeing is a World's largest excursion sightseeing bus tour operator. It provides tour bus services in more than a hundred cities around the world. The tours are operated by well-recognisable red open top double-decker buses.
The tourist attraction buses travel near major landmarks, while a prerecorded or live commentary in multiple languages is provided through small headphones to passengers. Tourists may leave and board the company buses within their ticket's time limit at special bus stops on a circular route. This is called hop-on-hop-off. In large cities buses go on more than one route. On some routes buses leave the city for suburban sights (such as from Sintra to Cabo da Roca). In some cities (such as New York City) buses operate even at night. In some cities (such as Prague, Moscow, Saint Petersburg) some variants of the ride include travelling by boat. The United Kingdom, Italy and Spain are the countries with the largest number of cities with City Sightseeing service.
Tickets are issued for either one or two day rides, and are purchased at tourist attractions or online. Tickets and discount offers are transferable between the worldwide tours. In some cities, rides by City Sightseeing are included in the city's guest card. A free map of the route for each city is offered as guide and advertisement as well as headphones are free for users. In 2011, nearly 13 million tourists took City Sightseeing tours

08/12 – Looking For Dali
Breaking up is hard to do as they say. With some cash saved, the darkness of November creeping in, no partner and parents also gone, he went to follow art. A few weeks clothes in a rucksack, Just a few thousands short of million Pesetas, ferry from Dover, couchette interrupted crossing into Spain at Port-Bou, he travelled south from Barcelona. RENFE’s orange &
white carriages reminded him of the Formica tables at his favourite cafe.
He got through Winston’s and Fortuna’s by the box of 100 while drifting into that breakfast ritual of Chocolate con Churros at the corner of the 3rd floor block he shared with engineering students. Late starts and a cafe con Leche suited him.
He didn’t find Dali in Cordoba, but the Hospital de la Caridad de los Reyes Catolicos together with small galleries in the vicinity fed his mind and soul.
With each afternoon a little more of his pain was forgotten.

Trump won the 2016 presidential election as the Republican nominee against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton while losing the popular vote. During the campaign, his political positions were described as populist, protectionist, isolationist, and nationalist. His election and policies sparked numerous protests. He was the first U.S. president with no prior military or government service. The 20172019 special counsel investigation established that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to favor his campaign. Trump promoted conspiracy theories and made many false and misleading statements during his campaigns and presidency, to a degree unprecedented in American politics. Many of his comments and actions have been characterized as racially charged or racist and many as misogynistic

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JH5AKR - Most-wanted Iraqi playing cards
During the 2003 invasion of Iraq by a United States-led coalition, the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency developed a set of playing cards to help troops identify the most-wanted members of President Saddam Hussein's government, mostly high-ranking members of the Iraqi Regional Branch of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party or members of the Revolutionary Command Council
among them were some of Hussein's family members. The cards were officially named the personality identification playing cards. As of 2021, all but 4 of the 52 most wanted have been either killed or captured, eleven of whom have been released.
Each card contains the wanted person's address and, if available, the job performed by that individual. The highest-ranking cards, starting with the aces and kings, were used for the people at the top of the most-wanted list. The ace of spades is Saddam Hussein, the aces of clubs and hearts are his sons Qusay and Uday respectively, and the ace of diamonds is Saddam's presidential secretary Abid Hamid Mahmud al-Tikriti. This strict correspondence to the order of the most-wanted list was not carried through the entire deck, but sometime later in 2003, the list itself was renumbered to conform (almost) to the deck of cards. The card backs feature camouflage reminiscent of that seen on the Desert Camouflage Uniform.
According to US Navy Lieutenant commander Jim Brooks, a spokesman for the Defense Intelligence Agency, such playing cards have been used as far back as the American Civil War & again in World War IIArmy Air Corps decks printed with the silhouettes of German and Japanese fighter aircraft fetch hundreds of dollars todayand in the Korean War. Troops often play cards to pass the time, seeing the names, faces and titles of the wanted Iraqis during their games will help soldiers and Marines in case they run into the wanted individuals in the field.
