Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JCP - This photograph shows an Underwood Standard manual typewriter, a landmark design in the history of writing and office technology. Finished in black metal with exposed mechanical components, the machine features a full QWERTY keyboard, circular glass-topped keys, ribbon spools, and a paper roller platen, all characteristic of early twentieth-century typewriter engineering.
The Underwood Standard series, produced from the late nineteenth century onwards, was among the first typewriters to achieve widespread commercial success. Its open-frame design allowed typists to see the text as it was being typed, a significant innovation at the time that helped establish Underwood as a dominant name in offices, newsrooms, and government departments around the world.
The image highlights the tactile, mechanical nature of analogue writing technology, with visible levers, springs, and typebars arranged in a semi-circular basket beneath the carriage. The worn surfaces and patina suggest long-term use, reinforcing the sense of durability and craftsmanship associated with these machines.
Typewriters such as this played a central role in the development of modern administration, journalism, and literature, shaping how documents were produced long before the arrival of computers and word processors. Images like this are commonly used to illustrate themes of writing history, vintage office culture, industrial design, mechanical craftsmanship, and the evolution of communication technology.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PK7XBF - The organ was not completed until 1926 and finally dedicated on 18th October that year.
An 'Anniversary' recital is given by the Cathedral Organist each year on the nearest Saturday to 18th, in commemoration of its dedication.
The organ is situated in two chambers on opposite sides of the Choir. It currently comprises 10,268 pipes and 200 stops contained in nine divisions. The Great, Solo, and Bombarde organs occupy the South case
the Swell, Choir and Positif occupy the North case
the Corona Organ (installed 1997) is situated in a gallery high up under the tower vaulting
and the Central Organ (installed 2007) is located on the South Central Gallery
the Pedal organ being distributed between both North and South cases.
There are two five-manual consoles
the original one up in a dedicated gallery under the North Choir case and a mobile recital console at floor level, the generous gift, in 1989, of Victor Hutson CBE. The Choir and Positif Organs are played from the same keyboard, the Corona organ can be played from either the Choir or Bombarde keyboard, and the Central organ from either the Bombarde or Great.
The 'Trompette Militaire' and the 'Tuba Magna' stops are the loudest voices on the organ, with the 'Militaire' being located high up on the Corona Gallery beneath the Tower vaulting
manufactured and dedicated in 1997, it was the generous gift of Prof Alan Dronsfield. Conversely the 'Tuba Magna' is located high up in the South case of the organ and speaks into the Central Space of the Cathedral.
Both the recital console and the 'Militaire' were manufactured in the Liverpool workshops of David Wells Organ Builders, who are custodians of the organ and responsible for its tuning and current refurbishment.
When the organ was completed in 1926 it was the largest musical instrument ever conceived, and, since the installation of the Central division in 2007, it continues to be the largest pipe organ in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NAWG92 - EKCO (from Eric Kirkham Cole Limited) was a British electronics company producing radio and television sets from 1924 until 1960. Expanding into plastic production for its own use, Ekco Plastics produced both radio cases and later domestic plastic products
the plastics company became Lin Pac Mouldings Ltd.
The company's founder Eric Kirkham Cole was born on 4 July 1901 at Prittlewell, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, and was educated at Southend Day Technical School, followed by a three-year apprenticeship. Cole and his future wife Muriel Bradshaw started out making radio sets in 1924.
William Streatfield Verrells, a schoolmaster and freelance journalist from Southend-on-Sea, wrote an article in a local newspaper asking if it was possible to power a radio set from the mains electricity supply rather than batteries. Cole saw a possible business opportunity
In the late 1930s, Ekco began producing its own radio valves at its Southend-on-Sea works. Following the company's decision to abandon the venture, the plant was converted to a lamp factory. In 1943, Ekco acquired Ensign Lamps based in Preston. In 1950, Ekco sold 51% of its lighting subsidiary, Ekco-Ensign Electric Ltd, to Thorn Electrical Industries.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JY558Y - Dugena is a German watch manufacturer, currently part of the EganaGoldpfeil group.
BEGINNING AS ALPINA GERMANY
The name Dugena is one of Germany's most famous watch brands. The roots of the company lie in Switzerland, namely with the Swiss watchmaker association Corporation d'Horlogers Suisse, which was founded in 1883 by Gottlieb Hauser. This was called Union Horlogère from 1901 and presented itself at this time with the brand name Alpina, which was first used as the name of a proprietary caliber.
RENAMING OF THE GERMAN ALPINA TO DUGENA
From about 1909, there is a branch in Glashütte, which bears the name Präcisions-Uhrenfabrik Alpina . 1917 the Deutsche Uhrmachergenossenschaft Alpina (German watchmaker cooperative Alpina) is created by the concentration of the watch factories Biel-Geneva and Glashütte in Eisenach. 1927 their headquarters is moved to Berlin.
During World War II, the Allies prohibit the Union Horlogère to continue to market in Germany under the name Alpina . Therefore, 1942 in Berlin it is decided to rename Alpina into DUGENA - Deutsche Uhrmacher-Genossenschaft Alpina (German watchmaking cooperative Alpina). As a unique trademark the circle in the triangle is chosen, under which the new brand achieves a high level of awareness.
GREAT SUCCESS AFTER THE WAR
1948, the headquarters of Dugena, which had been in the eastern part of Berlin, is moved to Darmstadt. Under the successful management of the director Willi Tempel Dugena becomes a byword for reliable and modern quality watches in West Germany.
The years of the Wirtschaftswunder (German economic miracle after the war) as well as the 1960s and the 1970s bring unparalleled success to the company. Both with ladies watches as with men's watches the brand gaines a considerable reputation. As one of only very few watch manufacturers Dugena is not affected by the quartz crisis, as it manages to establish itself with high quality quartz collections and is thereby open to new buyer generations. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJYRG4 - Smiths experienced a varied career as a watchmaker. The first watches were produced in a factory built in Cheltenham, built at the start of the Second World War for aircraft instrumentation. This factory produced the highest grade of Smiths watches, these are the ones which typically are more collectable. These include the Smiths De Luxe, Imperial, English Imperial, Everest, Astral and W10.
Previously Smiths and the Ingersoll Watch Company founded the Anglo-Celtic Watch Co Ltd in 1946, producing watches in Wales up until 1980. This joint venture became one of the largest producers of watches in Europe. The same factory produced the cheaper Smiths Empire watches. These watches are quite common and can be purchased for under £20. These are the lowest quality watches produced by Smiths and for amateur watch repairers are great watches to practice with due to the surplus of watches available. The dials of these watches are often marked with Made In Gt. Britain.
The Astral range was introduced in 1959, using a 17-jewel centre second movement. In 1964 the slimline movement was used in the Astral manufactured up until 1970. The most common variants of the Slimline movement are the 60466E or the 60465E.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8FBAK - Chemistry sets were educational toys allowing the user (typically a bored teenager) to perform simple chemistry experiments.
In the United Kingdom, Thomas Salter Science produced a series of seven chemistry sets in the 1970s. mainstays in these sets were vials of chemicals, exotic labels, test tubes and cork stoppers, an instruction manual, litmus paper, safety goggles and a burner of some description.
Amateur chemistry or home chemistry is the pursuit of chemistry as a private hobby. It should not be confused with clandestine chemistry, which involves the illicit production of controlled drugs.
Throughout much of the 20th century, amateur chemistry was an unexceptional hobby, with high-quality chemistry sets readily available, and laboratory suppliers freely selling to hobbyists. For example, Linus Pauling had no difficulty in procuring potassium cyanide at the age of eleven. However, due to increasing concerns about terrorism, drugs and safety, suppliers became increasingly reluctant to sell to amateurs, and chemistry sets were steadily toned down.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BEW1CD - Crewe Heritage Centre is a railway museum located in Crewe, England. Managed by the Crewe Heritage Trust, the museum is located between the railway station and the town centre
the site was the location of the 'Old Works' which was demolished in the early 1980s.
History
The centre was established in the old London, Midland and Scottish Railway yard, which was once part of Crewe Works, between the junction to Chester and the West Coast Main Line. It was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, on 24 July 1987. It was renamed in 1992 as Crewe Railway Age by the owning registered charity but, after the management of the centre was taken over by a new group of volunteers, the museum returned to its original name of Crewe Heritage Centre in early 2008.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DCTC - The British Rail Class 142 is a class of Pacer diesel multiple-unit passenger trains used in the United Kingdom. 96 units were built by BREL in Derby between 1985 and 1987. They were a development of the earlier Class 141 which were introduced in 1984.
They were initially built for use on rural branch lines. However, as of April 2015 they are mainly used on busy commuter routes in the major cities in the north of England, with some also in use on local services around Cardiff. Until 2009, they also operated in Devon, by First Great Western.
