Why no Clean Air Zone?
You might have seen signs for a Clean Air Zone on our roads. That's because our first Clean Air Plan included plans for a Greater Manchester-wide category C charging Clean Air Zone.
But following the pandemic, government agreed that this charging Clean Air Zone would NOT be introduced on 30 May 2022.
That's because the pandemic resulted in significant vehicle supply chain issues, rising vehicle prices, and a cost-of-living crisis. The original Clean Air Plan was no longer the right solution and could have caused significant financial hardship.
At the same time, it would not have met the government's legal direction (issued before the pandemic) to tackle harmful nitrogen dioxide on local roads by 2024.
Our new investment-led plan does not include a charging-Clean Air Zone.

The force required to break a hank of yarn
A hank is a standardised length of yarn (traditionally 840 yards for cotton). The tester applies increasing tension to the yarn until it breaks, and the dial records the breaking load.
So the meter is measuring yarn strength, usually expressed as:
Pounds-force (lb) or
A related strength index used in mill quality control
Why this mattered in Lancashire mills
In cotton spinning and weaving, yarn strength was critical:
Yarn that was too weak would snap on looms, causing stoppages
Stronger, more consistent yarn meant higher loom speeds and fewer breaks
Strength testing was part of routine quality control before yarn was sent to weaving sheds or customers
Spinners were often paid or penalised based on yarn quality, so these tests had real economic consequences.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3082P - Crossley Brothers was set up in 1867 by brothers Francis (183997) and William J.(18441911). Francis, with help from his uncle, bought the engineering business of John M Dunlop at Great Marlborough Street in Manchester city centre, including manufacturing pumps, presses, and small steam engines.
In 1869 they had the foresight to acquire the UK and world (except German) rights to the patents of Otto and Langden of Cologne for the new gas fueled atmospheric internal combustion engine and in 1876 these rights were extended to the famous Otto four-stroke cycle engine. The changeover to four stroke engines was remarkably rapid with the last atmospheric engines being made in 1877.
The business flourished. In 1881, Crossley Brothers became a private limited company (i.e. Crossley Brothers Ltd.), and then in 1882 it moved to larger premises in Pottery Lane, Openshaw, in eastern Manchester.
Crossley Brothers built diesel engines for stationary, marine and locomotive use. There was a wide range of engines from six to 3200 horsepower (Crossley) and up to 9000 horsepower (Crossley-Pielstick).
Their marine engines had a reputation for durability and reliability.

They became one of the most commercially successful pop acts of the 1980s, selling more than 30 million certified records worldwide from 1982 to 1986.
Influenced by funk and soul music and presenting themselves as disaffected youth, Wham!'s 1983 debut album Fantastic addressed the United Kingdom's unemployment problem and teen angst over adulthood. Their second studio album Make It Big in 1984 was a worldwide pop smash hit, charting at number one in both the UK and the United States. Associated with the MTV-driven Second British Invasion of the US, the singles from the albumWake Me Up Before You Go-Go, Everything She Wants and Careless Whisperall topped the US Billboard Hot 100. In 1985, Wham! made a highly publicised 10-day visit to China, the first by a Western pop group. The event was seen as a major watershed moment in increasing friendly bilateral relations between China and the West.
In 1986, Wham! broke up. Michael was keen to create music targeted at a more sophisticated adult market rather than the duo's primarily teenage audience. Before going their separate ways, a farewell single The Edge of Heaven, and a greatest-hits album titled The Final would be forthcoming, along with a farewell concert entitled The Final.

During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.
Between 14 August and 18 September 2022, Avanti West Coast reduced its timetable, citing unofficial strike action from its employees. However, this allegation was disputed by Aslef, which accused the company of lying and blamed their lack of recruitment, especially of train drivers, for the problems. Trains were running at one service per hour on the majority of routes, as opposed to the three which would typically occur on the London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly route. Mark's mosaic masterpieces of city icons like music impressario Tony Wilson, footballer George Best and Smiths frontman Morrissey became a much-loved city landmark hung on the exterior of Afflecks but when the site was taken over by developer Bruntwood in 2008 they were kept by the previous manager.
But now Mark tells The Diary he has been commissioned to create a raft of new mosaics that will once again decorate the arches of the old building that corners a huge site off Oldham Street, Tib Street and Dale Street in the Northern Quarter.
He says: I suppose my artwork is Afflecks, that's what I do, it's what I'm known for. It has been my gallery for the past 12 years or so, so obviously I'm happy to be asked back.
The first, that depicts the famous On The Sixth Day God Created Man...Chester quote, will return this week on the Afflecks Arcade.
And Mark, pictured here in his studio, is now hard at work on the second, an image of labrador Bruce, who the Black Dog Ballroom bar in the basement of Afflecks is named after.
Mark then has plans to create new mosaics of Manc icons, including a special Factory Records piece, to commemorate the label's late, great Tony Wilson, New Order manager Rob Gretton and legendary music producer Martin Hannett, among others

The programme typically centres around the residents of Coronation Street a cobbled, terraced street in Weatherfield, a fictional town based on inner-city Salford.
Originally broadcast twice weekly, the series now airs six times a week: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 7:308 pm and 8:309 pm.[4] The programme was conceived by scriptwriter Tony Warren and entered production at Granada Television in Manchester in 1960. Warren's initial proposal was rejected by the station's founder Sidney Bernstein, but he was persuaded by producer Harry Elton to produce the programme for 13 pilot episodes, and the show has since become a significant part of British culture.
Coronation Street is made by ITV Granada at MediaCityUK and shown in all ITV regions, as well as internationally. On 17 September 2010, it became the world's longest-running television soap opera and was listed in Guinness World Records. Initially influenced by the conventions of kitchen sink realism, Coronation Street is noted for its depiction of a down-to-earth, working-class community, combined with light-hearted humour and strong characters. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGY9 - William Robinson purchased the Unicorn Inn from Samuel Hole on 29 September 1838. His eldest son George brewed the first Robinsons Ale there in 1849.
In 1859, Frederic Robinson took over from George and bought a warehouse to the rear of the inn to expand brewing capacity. As a result, Robinsons ale became available at pubs around the Stockport area. To control the quality of ale sold, Frederic began to purchase public houses. From 1878 until his death in 1890, Frederic established twelve pubs which exclusively served his ale. This was the beginning of what was to become an estate of over 300 pubs across the North West of England and North Wales.
The Unicorn Brewery still rests on the foundations of the public house on Lower Hillgate in Stockport.
The brewery continues to be run by the fifth and sixth generations of the Robinson family. The company took over Hartley's Brewery in Ulverston in 1982, closing it and transferring the brewing of Hartley's beers to Stockport in 1991. Robinsons have acquired a number of other breweries over the years, including John Heginbotham, Stalybridge (1915)

A mosaic tribute to The Fall's Mark E. Smith has been unveiled - and purposefully hidden away on a back street for fans to discover in the Northern Quarter
There is a new tribute to The Fall frontman Mark E Smith in Manchester city centre - but you'll have to head off the beaten track to find it.
The maverick mastermind of the Manc band died in January, aged 60, after battling cancer, with tributes paid from rock and cultural icons from across the globe.
Now there's a permanent tribute, hidden in the Northern Quarter, to his lyrical genius.
Venture to the far (and dead) end of Short Street and you will find two striking mosaics - one in Mark's image and the other featuring lyrics from The Fall song Ten Houses of Eve, framed by the brickwork of the far wall of the Affleck's building.
The artworks have been commissioned by renowned mosaic artist Mark Kennedy, and were created by artist Mary Goodwin.
Kennedy had been friends with Smith for 15 years, and hopes to add to artworks in the secluded end of Short Street as an ongoing tribute to Smith and The Fall.
He says: I want to call this Fall corner, and over the years I'd like to add little bits every time there's a celebratory element to the group.
I like the corner because it's hidden and to an extent The Fall were quite a hidden band and Mark's lyrics have many hidden meanings too.
It's hard to find, and like The Fall in many respects, you have to look for it and that works for me.
The lyrics on the artwork read: Identity art.. if only the shards you'd relocate back in place, ending with the dates of Smith's life - 1957-2018.
Kennedy was keen for a female artist to create the works, as a testament to the female musicians in The Fall, and commissioned Leeds-based Mary Goodwin

15 July 1858 14 June 1928) was a British political activist who organised the UK suffragette movement and helped women win the right to vote. In 1999, Time named her as one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century, stating that she shaped an idea of objects for our time and shook society into a new pattern from which there could be no going back. She was widely criticised for her militant tactics, and historians disagree about their effectiveness, but her work is recognised as a crucial element in achieving women's suffrage in the United Kingdom.
Born in the Moss Side district of Manchester to politically active parents, Pankhurst was introduced at the age of 14 to the women's suffrage movement. She founded and became involved with the Women's Franchise League, which advocated suffrage for both married and unmarried women. When that organisation broke apart, she tried to join the left-leaning Independent Labour Party through her friendship with socialist Keir Hardie but was initially refused membership by the local branch on account of her sex. While working as a Poor Law Guardian, she was shocked at the harsh conditions she encountered in Manchester's workhouses.
In 1903, Pankhurst founded the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), an all-women suffrage advocacy organisation dedicated to deeds, not words. The group identified as independent from and often in opposition to political parties. It became known for physical confrontations: its members smashed windows and assaulted police officers. Pankhurst, her daughters, and other WSPU activists received repeated prison sentences, where they staged hunger strikes to secure better conditions, and were often force-fed.

The loss of the account with this brand resulted in reduced turnover in the seasonal period across the administration companies. This adversely impacted cash-flow and the ability to maintain the payment of liabilities as and when they fell due.

It was the last colliery to be sunk in Astley. Sinking commenced in 1908 by the Pilkington Colliery Company, a subsidiary of the Clifton and Kersley Coal Company, at the southern edge of the Manchester Coalfield, working the Middle Coal Measures where they dipped under the Permian age rocks under Chat Moss. The colliery was north of the Bridgewater Canal. In 1929 it became part of Manchester Collieries, and in 1947 was nationalised and integrated into the National Coal Board. It closed in 1970, and is now Astley Green Colliery Museum.
No 1 pit was sunk to 890 yards primarily to win coal from the Trencherbone mine and No 2 pit was 833 yards deep. The shaft was 23 feet in diameter. The Crombouke and Rams mines were intersected by the sinkings. Firedamp was a problem in the new workings and ventilation was a problem. The headgear of No.1 pit survives, it is made from wrought iron lattice girders with riveted plates at the joints and one small and two large wheels mounted at the top. It is nearly 30 metres (98 ft) high and was built by Head Wrightson of Stockton-on-Tees and completed by 1912. In 1912 a twin tandem compound 3300 horsepower winding engine built by Yates and Thom of Blackburn, the largest ever used on the Lancashire Coalfield, was installed at No 1 pit. The company built a smaller cross compound winding engine for No 2 pit, installed in 1919.
In 1923 the colliery employed 1524 men underground and 436 surface workers
which increased to 1631 underground and 492 surface workers by 1933. At Nationalisation in 1947 the colliery employed 1375 below and 561 above ground. The surface workers included women, known as pit brow lasses, who sorted coal on the screens. Women were employed at Astley Green until the mid-1950s.

Winstanley was the leader and one of the founders of the English group known as the True Levellers or Diggers for their beliefs, and for their actions. The group occupied public lands that had been privatised by enclosures and dug them over, pulling down hedges and filling in ditches, to plant crops. True Levellers was the name they used to describe themselves, whereas the term Diggers was coined by contemporaries.
Gerrard Winstanley was born on 19 October 1609 and was baptised in the parish of Wigan, then part of the West Derby hundred of Lancashire. He was the son of an Edward Winstanley, mercer. His mother's identity remains unknown and he could have been born anywhere in the parish of Wigan. The parish of Wigan contained the townships of Abram, Aspull, Billinge-and-Winstanley, Dalton, Haigh, Hindley, Ince-in-Makerfield, Orrell, Pemberton, and Upholland, as well as Wigan itself.
He moved in 1630 to London, where he became an apprentice and ultimately, in 1638, a freeman of the Merchant Tailors' Company or guild. He married Susan King, the daughter of London surgeon William King, in 1639. The English Civil War, however, disrupted his business, and in 1643 he was made bankrupt. In 1960, the station was closed to passengers and in 1986 it was permanently closed to all services.
After years of abandonment and many proposed development schemes, the station roof was dismantled in February 2013. The site was used for Manchester International Festival in July 2013.
Manchester Mayfield railway station and the surrounding 6.2-acre (25,000 m2) site is the property of London and Continental Railways, the residual government-owned corporation and former partner in Eurostar.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF5E4 - Manchester's famous Canal Street is now home to the largest LGBT piece of street art in the UK. The multi-coloured makeover took a little more than a week of hard work on the side of The Molly House on Richmond Street to be finished.
Organised by Queerchester, which lobbies and fundraises for arts and culture initiatives in the gay village, the project saw the entries of the street art competition winners Glenn Jones (the overall winner), Lauren Jo Kelly, Adam Pryce and Mark Wallis become bigger than they could ever have imagined with the help of renowned graffiti artists Aylo (Hayley Garner) and Cbloxx (Joy Gilleard). Over 950 online votes and 7 judges chose between 29 brilliantly creative entries to pick the winners.
The mural depicts five famous faces who are considered to be LGBT icons, two of which are very well known around Manchester's gay scene
legendary drag queens Anna Phylactic (top) and Foo Foo Lammar (top right). The others are feminist Emmeline Pankhurst (top left), writer Quentin Crisp (bottom left) and scientist Alan Turing (bottom right). Lauren Jo Kelly designed Anna while Glenn Jones created the other four. Adam Pryce's cute critters in the top left above the rainbow and Mark Wallis' naked man below it complete the work of art.
If you've been around the village during the last week or so you may have seen the mural, which was done using spray paint instead of brushes, in progress. In 1950, Fender introduced the first mass-produced solid-body Spanish-style electric guitar, the Telecaster (originally named the Broadcaster for two-pickup models and Esquire for single-pickup). Following its success, Fender created the first mass-produced electric bass, the Precision Bass (P-Bass). In 1954, Fender unveiled the Stratocaster (Strat) guitar. With the Telecaster and Precision Bass having been on the market for some time, Leo Fender was able to incorporate input from working musicians into the Stratocaster's design.

It started in Greater Manchester in 1989 and opened in London in 1996, and expanded to Newcastle in 2013, Newcastle upon Tyne and Bristol.
History
The charity is named after Albert Kennedy (31 January 1973 30 April 1989), a 16-year-old Social Services care leaver from Manchester who was gay. Kennedy died after falling from the top of Chorlton Street multi-storey car park. Despite an inquest the circumstances of his death remain unclear. The official version is that he died from misadventure.
Kennedy had experienced a great deal of homophobia during his life. Manchester's gay community was moved into action by the Trust's founder patron Cath Hall. Cath Hall was a straight foster carer who saw the need for an organisation to be set up to support young lesbian, gay, bi and trans people who were facing homelessness because of rejection at home. She had observed that Kennedy's case was not isolated, and that many other LGBTQ+ young people in and out of the foster care system were struggling with the effects of homophobia. Hall described the founding of the trust as an emotional response, an angry response, to what was going on.
As a result, the Albert Kennedy Trust was formed, officially becoming a Trust in 1990.
In 2019 the Albert Kennedy Trust rebranded as akt.

The revival of the Altrincham Market is nothing short of remarkable. From 1290 (yes, 1290!) the market had been at the centre of community life in Altrincham. Throughout the centuries, the market would have been where townsfolk gathered to buy goods, make a living, and spend time in the company of their neighbours.
And yet, the second half of the 20th century brought a period of stagnation. With the fortunes of the town on the downturn and the population size decreasing year over year, the historic market was being run by the council with little love or care. In fact, around a decade ago, Altrincham was voted as having the worse high street in Britain.
So, what has changed?
Well, Nick Johnson came onto the scene. Nick was a property developer and saw something in Altrincham that others failed to spot. In 2013, he won the contract to run the market and quickly set about changing the face of it and in turn Altrincham.
Nick gave the Victorian building a makeover. Cleaning it from top to bottom and restoring some features that had been neglected. He then got to work contacting some of the area's best, local food vendors.
Nick did the same in Manchester city centre with the Mackie Mayor food hall, the big sister of Altrincham Market House. We previously wrote about Mackie Mayor here.
Food And Drink At Altrincham Market House
Since it reopened in 2014, locals and visitors have filled the food hall week after week, and it should come as no surprise the food on offer is second to none!
Market House is home to 10 indie food stalls, including Honest Crust, Wolfhouse Kitchen, Tender Cow, Jack in the Box, Reserve Wines, Great North Pie Co., Sam Joseph, and Market House Coffee.

It is the second largest Chinatown in the United Kingdom and the third largest in Europe. It has an archway on Faulkner Street which was completed in 1987 and contains many Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Nepali, Vietnamese, Singaporean and Malaysian restaurants, shops, bakeries and supermarkets.
The first settlers to arrive in the city came in the early 20th century
according to the BBC, Many arrived alone and were engaged in what was seen as the traditional trade of laundries. Manchester's first Chinese restaurant, Ping Hong, opened on Mosley Street in 1948, on the eve of a Chinese immigration wave that would commence during the 1950s. Manchester did not have a significant Chinese population, reaching only about 2,000. However, after World War II, there were severe labour shortages, and in response, the government passed the British Nationality Act 1948, which allowed easier access into the country. Additionally, Hong Kong's rapid urbanisation meant that many farmers and traditional residents' homes were being destroyed by the urban sprawl, so many decided to migrate.
The area's beginnings are rooted in the restaurant business, as many Chinese restaurants surfaced soon after the immigration boom. By the 1970s other Chinese businesses began to emerge, such as medicine shops, Chinese supermarkets, as well as financial and legal services, all serving the employees of the expanding number of Chinese restaurants in the area. There was even a Hong Kong government office and a branch of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation during the 1970s. In 1989 the Chinese Arts Centre opened in Chinatown. John Cassidy created two matching statues, in white Saravezza marble, of John Rylands and Mrs Rylands, which stand guard over the two ends of the Library's Historic Reading Room. John Rylands (1801 - 1888) occupies a prominent position at one end, and Mrs Rylands presides over the other, near to what used to be the Library's service counter. The picture above dates from 2003.
Although the statues appear as a pair, they were not conceived or commissioned together. 'John Rylands' was commissioned by Mrs Rylands in 1894 as an integral part of the library dedicated to her late husband, and has had pride of place since the building opened in 1900, whilst her own likeness was commissioned by supporters of the Library, and unveiled on 9 December 1907, a few months before her death on 4 February 1908.

A track with a tale of what you reap is what you sow.
'Cat's in the Cradle' is a 1974 folk rock song by Harry Chapin from the album Verities &
Balderdash. The single topped the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1974. As Chapin's only number one hit song, it became the best known of his work and a staple for folk rock music.
The song was based upon a poem written by Harry's wife Sandy
the poem itself was inspired by the awkward relationship between her first husband, James Cashmore, and his father, a New York City politician. She was also inspired by a country music song she had heard on the radio. Harry has also said that the song was about his father-son relationship with his son, Josh, saying that 'Frankly, this song scares me to death'.
The song is told in first-person by a father who is too busy to spend time with his son. Though the son asks him to join in childhood activities, the father always responds with little more than vague promises of spending time together in the 'future'. While wishing to spend time with his father, the son starts to model himself on his father's behaviour, hence the verse wishing to be 'just like him.'.
The final two verses are a reverse of the roles, where the father asks his grown-up son to visit, but the son responds that he is now too busy to find the time for his father. The father then reflects that they are both alike, saying 'my boy was just like me.' The song's chorus uses imagery related to childhood Cat's in the Cradle, Silver Spoon, Little Boy Blue, Man in the Moon.
This track was covered by the band 'Ugly Kid Joe' which sold over half a million in Australia. It was also used in the British Government Don't Suffer It, Change it / Despairs In The Cradle campaign in Northern Ireland mid 1980's - www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTWXDY1lJMY

Boddingtons was best known for Boddingtons Bitter (Boddies), a straw-golden, hoppy bitter which was one of the first beers to be packaged in cans containing a widget, giving it a creamy draught-style head. In the 1990s, the beer was promoted as The Cream of Manchester in a popular advertising campaign credited with raising Manchester's profile. Boddingtons became one of the city's most famous products after Manchester United and Coronation Street.
Whitbread bought Boddingtons Brewery in 1989 and Boddingtons Bitter received an increased marketing budget and nationwide distribution. Boddingtons achieved its peak market share in 1997 and at the time was exported to over forty countries. Boddingtons beer brands are now owned by the global brewer AnheuserBusch InBev which acquired the Whitbread Beer Company in 2000. Strangeways Brewery closed in 2004 and production of pasteurised (keg and can) Boddingtons was moved to Samlesbury in Lancashire. Production of the cask conditioned beer moved to Hydes Brewery in Moss Side, Manchester, until it was discontinued in 2012, ending the beer's association with the city.
The Boddingtons two bees logo was introduced in 1900. The bees are a symbol of Manchester, from a time when it was a hive of industry, but the two bees also represent a pun on the company name of Boddingtons Breweries.
Boddingtons largely eschewed above the line advertising until 1987, when it was first advertised on Granada television in the North West of England. The tagline from 1987 until 1991 was If you don't get Boddies, you'll just get bitter. Under Whitbread's custodianship the comedian Frankie Howerd fronted the campaign in a series of six television advertisements which mainly aired in the North West in 19901991. Lowe Howard-Spink was the advertising agency responsible for the Howerd advertisements.

Jones had begun writing songs and recording home demos as part of an experimental theatre group in Sheffield. A collection of these demos, I Was Born a Man, was released in July 1995, under the name Babybird. He recruited a band made up of Huw Chadbourn (keyboards), Robert Gregory (drums), John Pedder (bass) and Luke Scott (guitar), in order to tour and promote his work.
During 1995, two further albums of demo recordings were released under the name Babybird (Bad Shave and Fatherhood) and two in 1996 (The Happiest Man Alive and Dying Happy). Babybird were signed to Echo Records (a division of the Chrysalis Group), and the first authentic single, a full-band recording of 'Goodnight', which had appeared in demo form on Fatherhood, was released in July 1996, becoming a minor hit in the UK Singles Chart. The group's second single, 'You're Gorgeous', reached number 3 in the UK in October 1996, and was one of the biggest selling singles of the year, going on to chart around the world.
Stephen can laugh about it on tour, but 'You're Gorgeous' set a difficult precident to follow. It hurts so much that it rarely gets played nowadays, more a millstone around his and Babybirds neck. Arguably, the commercial sound and success of 'You're Gorgeous', which received massive exposure by comparison, made it hard for many to take Jones seriously as an indie artist. Essentially, what he was best at was no longer what he was best known for, after it.
Stephen Jones has produced two works of fiction, The Bad Book in 2000 and Harry and Ida Swop Teeth (also the title of a Babybird b-side) in 2003. He also collaborated with DED Associates, who have designed many of his CD covers, on a 2000 art book Travel Sickness.

The group's style fused punk, glam, electronic, reggae and new wave music. At this early time they were defined by the album 'Systems Of Romance', an album produced by Kraftwerk associate Connie Plank. Its justly regarded as the first synthpop album.
Foxx left Ultravox after a 1980 US tour and was signed to Virgin.He was way ahead of his time with the Metamatic and Garden albums, the singles 'Burning Car' &
'Underpass'. In 1985 he gave up his music career to become a graphic artist. In the 1990's he did re-emerge with a synth-pop sound. A trickle of releases and remixes have followed.
John Foxx And The Maths are touring the UK during October 2011. They will be performing material from their new album Interplay as well as classic songs from early Ultravox and John\u2019s solo career. This includes material from his pioneering debut album, 1980\u2032s Metamatic.
The tour started in Leamington Spa, then Bristol Thekla, I saw them Friday the 21st of October, 2011 at the Manchester Academy 4. Special guest was Tara Busch.
The last album Interplay is a collaboration between Foxx and electronic composer and synthesizer collector, Benge (Ben Edwards). The latter is best known for his 2008 album Twenty Systems, which was described by Brian Eno as a \u2018Brilliant contribution to the archaeology of electronic music.\u2019
The band are from left to right, Hannah Peel (Keyboards / Violin), John Foxx, Benge (Ben Edwards on drums) and Serafina Steer (on Keyboards, Bass).

The problem of waste disposalwhether from a chamber pot or from an overused hole in the groundremained.
The Victorians made the connection between unsanitary conditions and disease that the Elizabethans hadn't and developed municipal sewer systems to try to keep their cities cleaner. The problem was that they didn't have a good way of connecting individual households to the system. Non-flushing water closets could be dressed up, but their contents couldn't be taken out. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries (about the same time the sewers were built), English patents were granted for several different types of water-closet valves, but their flushing actions were pretty inefficient. The wall mounted cistern that became popular in the 1870s vastly improved the situation because it provided a large volume of water under more pressure. Water-closet bowls remained a problem, though, because their rudimentary traps didn't do a very good job of either letting waste go down the drain or keeping sewer gases out of the building. At first these bowls were made of earthenware and glazed with sometimes-elaborate designs. In 1885, Thomas Twyford built the first vitreous china toilet, inspiring competition from other notable English potteries such as Wedgwood and Doulton
it wasn't long before vitreous china became the standard for the fledgling industry.
American inventors were also seeking solutions to the problem of building a sanitary water closet. As early as 1875, James Henry and William Campbell patented a plunger-type water closet

The observatory was established in 1945 by Bernard Lovell, a radio astronomer at the University of Manchester to investigate cosmic rays after his work on radar during the Second World War. It has since played an important role in the research of meteors, quasars, pulsars, masers and gravitational lenses, and was heavily involved with the tracking of space probes at the start of the Space Age. The managing director of the observatory is Professor Simon Garrington.
The main telescope at the observatory is the Lovell Telescope, which is the third largest steerable radio telescope in the world. There are three other active telescopes at the observatory
the Mark II, and 42 ft (13 m) and 7 m diameter radio telescopes. Jodrell Bank Observatory is the base of the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN), a National Facility run by the University of Manchester on behalf of the Science and Technology Facilities Council.
The Jodrell Bank Visitor Centre and an arboretum, are in the civil parish of Lower Withington and the Lovell Telescope and the observatory are in Goostrey civil parish, near Goostrey and Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, North West England. The observatory is reached from the A535. The Crewe to Manchester Line passes right by the site, and Goostrey station is a short distance away. On 7 July 2019, the observatory became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J7F - Philomena Lynott (22 October 1930 12 June 2019) was an Irish author and entrepreneur. She was the mother of Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott. Her autobiography, My Boy, documents their relationship. She was the proprietor of the Clifton Grange Hotel in Manchester, which provided accommodation for a number of bands in the 1970s including Thin Lizzy.
Biography
Philomena Lynott was born on 22 October 1930 as the fourth of nine children to Frank and Sarah Lynott in Dublin, and grew up in the Crumlin district of the city. She left school aged 13 and worked in an elderly people's home.
In 1947 Lynott took advantage of a viable job market in England, that needed labour to rebuild damage caused by World War II, finding work as a nurse in Manchester. She began a relationship with Cecil Parris, which led to Philip's birth on 20 August 1949. She suffered prejudice because she did not marry Cecil Paris and was the mother of a mixed-race son, who she decided would best be raised by her parents in Dublin. Lynott had two other children that she put up for adoption. She remained close to her son throughout his life but because she only saw him sporadically felt they were more like sister and brother or friends instead of a typical mother and son relationship.
In 1964 Lynott began a relationship with Dennis Keeley and the couple took over management of the Clifton Grange Hotel in Whalley Range, Manchester. Though they had no experience in running a hotel, they bought the property after six months and remained there for the next 14 years. The hotel became well known in northwest England for being frequented by the show business trade. Lynott took advantage of hotel licensing laws, which meant the bar could be open at 2 am when all other local venues had shut. When Thin Lizzy became commercially successful in the 1970s, the band looked forward to gigging in Manchester as Philomena would accommodate them and put on an after-show party.

Babylon Zoo were a British rock band of the mid-1990s from Wolverhampton, England, fronted by Jas Mann. They were best known for the song 'Spaceman', which on its release on 21 January 1996, went straight to #1 on the UK Singles Chart, selling 418,000 copies in the first week of release.
This is from an album entitled The Boy with the X-Ray Eyes. It was released in 1996, and included new-age tracks such as 'Is Your Soul for Sale?' and 'I'm Cracking Up I Need a Pill'. It debuted at no 6 on the UK Albums Chart, and reached the Top 20 in 17 countries, including Australia, New Zealand and Canada

The Steve Miller Band is a US rock band formed in 1967 in San Francisco. Familiar tracks include 'The Joker', 'Jet Airliner' and the 1982 hit 'Abracadabra'. This is one of my favourite tracks however, very clever lyrics. El Salvador &
Afghanistan ('ask those people about the macho plan...') are name checked in the song reflecting some cynicism of US foreign policy at the time, early 1980's.
The album 'Circle of love' contains a 16 minutes version of this track (taking up the whole of a side of vinyl. Hear it here.

The Beetham Tower, completed 2007 is a landmark 47-storey residential skyscraper in Manchester city centre, England. Certain a macho statement for the city and at 168 metres is the highest outside of London.
It consists of a (four star) Hilton Hotel up to level 23 and apartments from level 25 up to the triplex penthouse on level 47. The tower lies on Deansgate and has two postal addresses, with the apartments falling under 301 Deansgate and the hotel under 303 Deansgate.
The architect, Ian Simpson, bought and resides in the top floor penthouse, which is the highest living space in Britain. It cost him \u00a33 million. The residence occupies the top two storeys of the building and apparently features a semi-indoors garden containing 21 four-metre high olive, lemon and oak trees, shipped from Italy, and placed before the roof was built.
During the installation of the glass and steel 'blade' architectural feature on the roof, a strange noise problem emerged. People reported that the building 'whistles' (more like an intermittent hum) in windy weather. The sound is close to standard musical C (approximately 262 Hertz)
some say it is like a 'UFO landing' in sci-fi films. The noise also affected the production of local soap opera, Coronation Street with producers having to create extra background noise as the tower is close to the show's set.
A evacuation occurred in September 2007 when a fire was suspected. BBC Report here. Fortunately it did not become a real life towering inferno.

Pride (In the Name of Love)' is a song by rock band U2. It is the second track on the band's 1984 album, The 'Unforgettable Fire', it was released as the album's lead single in September 1984. The song had been intended to be about Ronald Reagan's pride in America's military power but writer St. Bono had been influenced by Stephen B. Oates's book Let The Trumpet Sound: A Life of Martin Luther King, Jr. and a biography of Malcolm X. These caused Bono to ponder the different sides of the civil rights campaigns, the violent and the non-violent.
I have an uneasy relationship with U2, I really like the early years up to Zooropa, but then I stuggle. This is one of my favourites however. I hope you enjoy it!

Sir Ian Murray McKellen, CH, CBE (born 25 May 1939) is an English actor from near me in Burnley, living some early years in Wigan. He has received a Tony Award and two Academy Award nominations. His work has spanned genres from Shakespearean and modern theatre to popular fantasy and science fiction. He is known to many for roles such as Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy and as Magneto in the X-Men films.
In 1988, McKellen came out and announced he was gay. He became a founding member of Stonewall, one of the United Kingdom's most influential LGBT rights groups, of which he remains a prominent spokesman. Here he wears a classic Stonewall T-shirt 'Some People Are Gay, Just Get Over It'.
He is pictured here leading the Manchester Pride 2010 carnival parade today 28th August .
The emotional feeling I get when I watch the pride march most years, is a similar one to when I hear this track. From the early 1980's when Manchester's canal street was a seedy no-go area. The area along the canal was perfect for gay men to clandestinely meet as it was dark and unvisited with shuttered pubs such as Napoleons. Manto bar started to buck that trend in 1981.
At the time there was a backdrop of less than equitable policing, led by James Anderton. His appointment as Chief Constable of Greater Manchester was announced on October 23, 1975. Anderton frequently courted public controversy with his outspoken views on policing and morality. As a professed Christian who claimed to speak with the supreme being regularly and who characterised himself to be an instrument of divine judgement.
Anderton came to be known as 'God's copper'. This led to the press and the public questioning his mental health and capability to perform his job appropriately. He was often in conflict with the city's political leadership during the 1980s, especially over his views on homosexuality and AIDS: he declared that homosexuality should be illegal, and he referred to homosexuals and those with AIDS as 'swirling in a cesspit of their own making'.
The Happy Mondays song 'God's Cop' criticizes James Anderton (for example, 'God makes it easy/God makes is easy on me'). The John Cooper Clarke track 'Chicken Town' is also a mancunian parable on those dark days.
I for one are glad those are now behind us. We have the tolerance and freedoms that help us respect each other, regardless of sexuality, race, religion. We should all be truly thankful (amen).

After achieving an upper 2nd class degree at Magdalen College at Oxford University and being a member of the Bullingdon Club, a private dining club of Oxford University students (which was 'infamous for riotous behaviour' and was open only to sons of aristocratic families and the wealthy. Osborne's friends David Cameron and Nat Rothschild were also members of the club), he tried to persue a career as a journalist, but then moved to a vacent position at Conservative Central Office. he cut his teeth on the Prime Minister's Questions team for the various Conservative incumbent leaders Hague, Howard and cameron. Indeed, Osbourne and Cameron are godfathers to each other's children, so this may make his position safer.
The graffitti is interesting as it suggests a Europe leaning overtone, one that tories would rarther hide under the carpet for the moment. How palitable would a referendum on leaving the EU? Marginal if that.
Having said that, its looking more like a hung or balanced parliament might be imminent. We in Britain could be heading for Cleggagedden, whatever that means. Personally, I would like the best of all worlds if possible. The best of the free market and the social conscience with a respect for the environment and each other. If I see that with proportional representation or a (well) 'hung parliament' then so it must be.

Manchesters second smallest boozer, with room for approximately twenty people including the feisty bar maid. The kind of venue where the music would stop when you walked in - that's if they had room for speakers - but within half an hour you'd be on first name terms with the regulars.
Not exactly a vast array of cocktails (This is more for the beer drinkers and G&T lovers) this is a bar that you hope will stay in Manchester for ever. In fact it's central location, on the busy Portland Street near Manchesters china town, makes it even more surprising that this hasn't been turned into apartments.

Travelling to work at my first job at GEC Higher openshaw (The Go Easy Club as it was known by some), I used to catch a 53 bus by it every morning. At the time it appeared to have an uncertain future, similar to the fate of the Belle Vue zoo &
amusement park. I remember passing the two giant giraffes on the 125 SELNEC bus as a very small kid. The giraffes ended up at a caravan park west of Glossop in Brookfield, quite close to where I grew up. I cannot say I have been past for some time so could not really say on the giraffe condition.
Racing started in 1928 at the Belle Vue greyhound stadium before moving the following year to a specially built stadium nearby on Hyde Road. The club raced there until 1987 when the stadium was sold and demolished.
The club moved to a just a short distance away to a new track and is still there today. Manchesters Aces moved back to the Greyhound Stadium, under the promotion of Peter Collins, John Perrin and Don Bowes. On the opening meeting of the new chapter of the the Aces history was held 1st April 1988. The Aces took on Bradford Dukes in the Frank Varey Northern Trophy. Unfortunately because of a waterlogged track the match was abandoned after just two heats. The Aces finished leading the match.

Roadkill cuisine is preparing and eating roadkill, animals hit by vehicles and found along roads.
It is a practice engaged in by a small subculture in the United States, Southern Canada, the United Kingdom and other Western countries as well as in other parts of the world. It is also a subject of humor and urban legend.
Large animals including deer, moose, bear and elk are frequently struck in some parts of the United States, as well as smaller animals such as armadillos, raccoons, skunks and birds. Fresh kill is preferred and worms are a concern, so the kill is typically well cooked. Advantages of the roadkill diet, apart from its low cost, are that the animals that roadkill scavengers eat are naturally high in vitamins and proteins with lean meat and little saturated fat, and generally free of additives and drugs.
Almost 1.5 million deer are hit by vehicles each year in the US. If the animal is not obviously suffering from disease, the meat is no different from that obtained by hunting. Its been a landmark in town for many decades and it was one of the first city centre places I ate in. The first chinese I ate in was the Tak Fook in Reddish (Hyde Rd end). A cracker of an understated place, which did a unique 9 course banquette. I must get back to it one day!
The establishment is one of the original Chinese restaurants around which modern Chinatown in Manchester has grown. It began life almost thirty years ago as the plain 'Hong Kong' restaurant, establishing the link with Hong Kong by being one of the first Chinese restaurants in Manchester city centre to serve authentic Cantonese cuisine. Since then the restaurant has been extensively modified and upgraded and so re-named The New Hong Kong.
Manchester's first Chinese restaurant, Ping Hong, opened in the area in 1948, on the eve of a Chinese immigration wave that would commence during the 1950s. Manchester, being neither a port city nor a capital city, such as Liverpool and London, respectively, did not have a significant Chinese population, reaching only about 2000.
However, after World War II, there were severe labour shortages, and in response, the government passed the British Nationality Act 1948, which allowed easier access into the country. Additionally, Hong Kong's rapid urbanisation meant that many farmers and traditional residents' homes were being destroyed by the urban sprawl, so many decided to migrate.
The area's beginnings are rooted in the restaurant business, as many Chinese restaurants surfaced soon after the immigration boom. By the 1970s other Chinese businesses began to emerge, such as medicine shops, Chinese supermarkets, as well as financial and legal services, all serving the employees of the expanding number of Chinese restaurants in the area. There was even a Hong Kong government office and a branch of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation during the 1970s

The Lowry named after the early 20th-Century painter, L.S. Lowry, known for this paintings of industrial scenes in North-West England, particularly Manchester, Salford and Lancashire in general.
The architecture was esigned by Michael Wilford and Buro Happold and it was built in modern expressionist style at a cost in 1999 of around \u00a3120million. It was opened in 2000. The aerofoil canopy at the entrance is clad with perforated steel and as shown here is illuminated from the inside at night
People forget that Salford is a twin city with Manchester (once part of Salfordshire - i kid you not!). Highlights include the Lowry (pictured), Strangeways (prison and title of the Smiths last album, 'Strangeways here we come') and Salfords lads club. Salford is also birthplace of John Cooper Clarke, punk poet.

My first knowledge of the Williams brothers was their involvement in Sub Sub (and the excellent top 10 UK single Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use) from around 1993). A freak fire in Ancoats (now home to lots of yuppie flats) in Feb 1996 destroyed the lads studio. When they got back together in 1998 their style had changed to be more alternative rock and the Doves were born.
This shot was taken with just available light, no flash.

Primal Scream are the definitive Scottish alternative rock group. They formed in 1982 in Glasgow by Bobby Gillespie (vocals) and Jim Beattie. The current lineup consists of Gillespie, Andrew Innes (guitar), Martin Duffy (keyboards), Gary 'Mani' Mounfield (bass), and Darrin Mooney (drums). Barrie Cadogan toured with the band in 2006 as a temporary replacement after the departure of guitarist Robert 'Throb' Young. Young's permanent replacement has not yet been announced.
The band performed throughout 1982-1984, but their career didn't especially take off until Gillespie left his position as drummer of The Jesus and Mary Chain. The band were a key part of the mid-1980s indie pop scene, but eventually moved away from their more jangly sound, taking on more psychedelic and then garage rock influences, before incorporating a dance music element to their sound. Their 1991 album Screamadelica broke the band into the mainstream.
On July 21, 2008, Primal Scream released a new album called Beautiful Future described by new producer Bjorn Yttling as sounding 'much more pop and Krautrock than before.
Critics suggested it sounds a bit like Alan Vega and Suicide. In July 2008, the first single from the album, entitled 'Can't Go Back', was released. The track was produced by Paul Epworth who also produced the album's title track. The tour followed and hence these shots.
