Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6GW - A red neon sign displaying the phrase Going Out Is The New Staying In mounted in a window on Thomas Street in Manchester's Northern Quarter, photographed at 30?32 Thomas Street, Manchester M4 1ER. The sign is set against a background of layered graffiti and urban textures, reinforcing the area's long-established reputation for independent culture, nightlife and creative expression.
Thomas Street is one of the central arteries of the Northern Quarter, an area closely associated with Manchester's music scene, alternative nightlife, independent bars, caf??s and retail. Neon signage of this kind has become a visual motif within the district, often used by venues to convey attitude, humour and social commentary rather than straightforward advertising.
The slogan reflects a wider cultural shift in urban social habits, particularly in the period following the COVID-19 pandemic, where renewed emphasis was placed on socialising outside the home and supporting city-centre hospitality venues. Photographed in close-up, the image highlights the glow of the red neon tubing, the reflective glass surface and the surrounding street-level textures, providing strong editorial context for themes of nightlife, urban culture and contemporary social attitudes in Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAX8F - Pedestrian wayfinding signs in the Castlefield area of Manchester city centre, England, directing walkers towards major cultural, civic, and visitor destinations including Manchester Central, Bridgewater Hall, the Museum of Science and Industry, Roman Gardens, the Great Northern Warehouse, and Castlefield Youth Hostel. Castlefield is recognised as Manchester's first designated urban heritage park and is known for its Roman origins, canal basins, and surviving industrial infrastructure.
The blue and white signposts form part of the city's pedestrian navigation system, designed to encourage walking between transport hubs, cultural venues, historic sites, and leisure areas. The signs reflect the layered character of Castlefield, where Roman archaeology, Victorian canals and railways, and modern cultural buildings coexist within a compact city-centre district.
The image highlights themes of urban wayfinding, heritage-led regeneration, and the role of public realm infrastructure in supporting tourism, everyday movement, and accessibility in major British cities. It also illustrates how Manchester promotes walkability and connects historic neighbourhoods with contemporary cultural and commercial centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X2CG3J - This image shows a striking illuminated neon sign displaying the words Come and Worship, rendered in bright blue neon tubing and framed by a contrasting green neon border. The sign is located on Oldham Street in Manchester city centre, an area strongly associated with nightlife, independent music venues, bars, and alternative culture within the Northern Quarter.
The message presents a deliberate and thought-provoking contrast between religious language and its urban surroundings. Oldham Street is better known for live music, late-night venues, record shops, and street culture than overt expressions of faith, making the presence of a Christian worship message visually and culturally arresting. The glowing neon typography echoes commercial signage styles more commonly associated with entertainment or retail, blending religious invitation with the visual language of the night-time city.
Photographed at night, the sign's illumination stands out sharply against a dark background, emphasising the clarity of the text and the symbolic impact of faith displayed openly in a secular urban environment. The image reflects wider themes in contemporary British cities, including the coexistence of belief systems, the visibility of religion in public spaces, and the use of modern visual forms to communicate traditional spiritual messages.
This photograph has strong editorial relevance for themes of religion, belief, spirituality, urban culture, modern Britain, social commentary, and the interaction between faith and nightlife in city centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTD2N0 - Serenity is a large mural by street art duo SNIK at the back of the Greater Manchester Police Museum & Archives. It is a tribute to all women that stand against injustice. Over 100 years ago the Suffragettes gathered around the corner in Stevenson Square in a stance for equality so it is fitting that this mural is located just off the square on Little Lever Street.
This piece was organised by the Cities of Hope project.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AEDHXN - Hit the North is a 1987 song by British post-punk band the Fall. The lyrics were composed by band leader Mark E. Smith with the music written by Simon Rogers and Brix Smith. It was released as a single in October 1987 and reached number 57 on the UK singles chart. According to Tom Doyle of Sound on Sound, the song is a rousing groove?based anthem which is now regarded by many as both their ultimate statement and best single.
The record was part of a conscious approach by Brix Smith and Simon Rogers, both of whom had recently joined the band, in increasing the Fall's popularity and accessibility. Brix Smith said: It was definitely a conscious thing on my part because they were so, so underground and so unappreciated and unknown. I just thought they were such an important band and it needed to be broadcast all over the world. Her husband at the time, Mark E. Smith, disagreed: ..it wasn't a conscious effort. It was just trying to get it a bit more punchy. I always like it very clean and simple. A lot of groups are swamped with sound.
The music was written by Rogers and Brix Smith, and recorded by Rogers on his newly-acquired Sequential Circuits Studio 440 sequencer-sampler. Rogers said literally the first thing I put into it was a bass and a snare just on two pads, a little tiny Indian bell... and a sax note and a bass note from a Gentle Giant record. When Rogers demonstrated the instrument to Mark E. Smith, Smith said: What's that music? I'll have that, just do me a tape. Smith recorded a demo, with the original programmed drums removed
on the final recording they are replaced by samples of Simon Wolstencroft's drumming. The song was recorded in Abbey Road Studios in July 1987, during the sessions for the band's album The Frenz Experiment, with Rogers as producer and Ian Grimble as recording engineer. Guitar and vocal distortions and other effects were added in the studio.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RPGEH8 - The hidden tribute to Mark E Smith of The Fall worth seeking out on a Manchester back street
A mosaic tribute to The Fall's Mark E. Smith has been unveiled - and purposefully hidden away on a back street for fans to discover in the Northern Quarter
There is a new tribute to The Fall frontman Mark E Smith in Manchester city centre - but you'll have to head off the beaten track to find it.
The maverick mastermind of the Manc band died in January, aged 60, after battling cancer, with tributes paid from rock and cultural icons from across the globe.
Now there's a permanent tribute, hidden in the Northern Quarter, to his lyrical genius.
Venture to the far (and dead) end of Short Street and you will find two striking mosaics - one in Mark's image and the other featuring lyrics from The Fall song Ten Houses of Eve, framed by the brickwork of the far wall of the Affleck's building.
The artworks have been commissioned by renowned mosaic artist Mark Kennedy, and were created by artist Mary Goodwin.
Kennedy had been friends with Smith for 15 years, and hopes to add to artworks in the secluded end of Short Street as an ongoing tribute to Smith and The Fall.
He says: I want to call this Fall corner, and over the years I'd like to add little bits every time there's a celebratory element to the group.
I like the corner because it's hidden and to an extent The Fall were quite a hidden band and Mark's lyrics have many hidden meanings too.
It's hard to find, and like The Fall in many respects, you have to look for it and that works for me.
The lyrics on the artwork read: Identity art.. if only the shards you'd relocate back in place, ending with the dates of Smith's life - 1957-2018.
Kennedy was keen for a female artist to create the works, as a testament to the female musicians in The Fall, and commissioned Leeds-based Mary Goodwin

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RPGEJY - Afflecks (formerly Affleck's Palace) is an indoor market in Manchester, England, in the city's Northern Quarter on the junction of Church Street/Tib Street and Dale Street with Oldham Street. Dozens of independent stalls, small shops and boutiques operate in the one building. The building was once home to Affleck & Brown, one of the city's principal department stores. A bar on the original site opened in 2015, under the Affleck & Brown name.
Affleck & Brown was started in the 1860s as a drapery business in Oldham Street. The store grew to occupy a whole block between Oldham Street, Church Street and Tib Street and become a full flung department store. The business had a good reputation as a credit draper and was known for a good range of cloth for home dressmaking as well as a furrier.
Affleck's Palace first opened in 1982 by James and Elaine Walsh with an ethos of offering a safe environment for entrepreneurs to start out with affordable rent and no long-term contracts. Unit holders operated under a licence agreement which allowed them to pay for space on a week by week basis. The atmosphere and colourful maze-like layout led to Affleck's becoming a mecca for alternative culture. The establishment was able to bounce back from two building fires and overcame many obstacles.
During the 1990s 'Madchester Summer of Love' period, when local bands such as the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Inspiral Carpets were at the height of their popularity, Affleck's Palace was a fashionable place to get oversized flared jeans and tie dyed T-shirts and 'Eastern Bloc' was a popular record shop as it dealt in all the latest underground dance tunes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RF7KY9 - Manchester Mayfield is a former railway station in Manchester, England, on the south side of Fairfield Street next to Manchester Piccadilly Station. Opened in 1910, Mayfield was constructed as a four-platform relief station adjacent to Piccadilly to alleviate overcrowding. In 1960, the station was closed to passengers and in 1986 it was permanently closed to all services.
After years of abandonment and many proposed development schemes, the station roof was dismantled in February 2013. The site was used for Manchester International Festival in July 2013.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RF7M0D - Manchester Piccadilly is the principal railway station in Manchester, England. Opened as Store Street in 1842, it was renamed Manchester London Road in 1847 and Manchester Piccadilly in 1960. Located to the south-east of Manchester city centre, it hosts long-distance intercity and cross-country services to national destinations including London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Bristol and Southampton
regional services to destinations in Northern England including Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle and York
and local commuter services around Greater Manchester. It is one of 19 major stations managed by Network Rail. The station has 14 platforms, twelve terminal and two through platforms. Piccadilly is also a major interchange with the Metrolink light rail system with two tram platforms in its undercroft.
Piccadilly is the busiest station in the Manchester station group with nearly 28 million passenger entries and exits between April 2017 and March 2018, (the other major stations in Manchester are Oxford Road and Victoria). It is the fourth busiest station in the United Kingdom outside London. The station hosts services from six train operating companies. It is the second busiest interchange station outside London, with almost 3.8 million passengers changing trains annually.
Between the late 1990s and early 2000s, Piccadilly Station was refurbished, taking five years and costing ?100 million (in 2002), it was the most expensive improvement on the UK rail network at the time. Further improvements and expansion plans have been mooted. In October 2016, a Transport and Works Act application was submitted for the construction of two platforms as part of the Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Oxford Road Capacity Scheme. As of 2018, this application has not been approved by the government. To allow the station to accommodate high speed services under High Speed 2 proposals, five platforms would be required and the Metrolink station would be reconfigured.

The Doodle on Ducie Street has been created to launch the inaugural International Arts and Homelessness Summit and Festival
The mural, The Doodle on Ducie Street, has been created to launch the inaugural International Arts and Homelessness Summit and Festival in November which aims to raise awareness of homelessness and support homeless people.
We had almost 40 artists working on this and we came together just one week ago, said street artist and activist Joel.
It's been an intense week. We got together and asked what we could create that would represent everyone and what message or story we wanted to tell. Everyone made sketches and we made a composition, then each day we came out and worked on it.
Now the wall is a wondrous array of colour, inspired by Joel's signature style, designed to encourage conversation ? perfect for the upcoming festival.
The unique creative team was organised with the help of With One Voice, an organisation which sets out to tackle homelessness in a creative way.
Everyone came together and decided what was important to them. We came up with this concept of the guy on the mural, he's flying through the air from challenges in his life to a brighter future, said With One Voice director, Matt Peacock.
It's been an amazing experience, says Matt. We were really conscious that we were putting this piece of public art in the centre of Manchester, where homelessness has been on the rise. For many years people would rightly say, ?why art?'
And the reasons for that, which I hope you can see, are so many things ? it's about personal and societal regeneration, it's about telling a different story about homelessness, and giving a voice to people who are and have been homeless to say what they want to say to the public.
The artists have found the experience a boost to their confidence.
I wanted to get involved with the mural because I

Based in Manchester, the company owns 127 pubs in Manchester and the North West and supplies Joseph Holt's award-winning beers and lagers to over 500 accounts nationally. The company has a long-standing relationship with the Christie Hospital and the Holt Radium Institute in Manchester. This dates back to Sir Edward Holt, the great-grandfather of the current Chief Executive who founded the Holt Radium Institute in 1914. In 2016 Joseph Holt were incredibly proud to win the British Beer and Pub Association's Heart of the Community award for the second time, this was after a campaign to raise ?402,000 for the Christie. As a testament to the company's commitment, the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group which has over 300 MPs awarded Joseph Holt with the National Pub Aid award for their support to the community. Over the years, the family brewer has achieved many accolades for their beers. Most notably, the brewery is one of only a handful of breweries to have recently won four gold awards consecutively at the prestigious International Brewing Awards for their Crystal and Diamond lagers and for Black, their keg beer. Many of the pubs now serve fresh food and all stock an exquisite range of wines and spirits from around the world.

Until relatively recently, maps produced by the Geographers' (A?Z) Map Company did not include a publication date. Some clues to dating include:
their first map was published in 1936
the only maps produced by them during WW2 (1939?1945) were war maps of Europe
until 1962, the Published By address was 24 Grays Inn Road, Holborn, London
from 1962 to 1992, the Published By address was Sevenoaks, Kent
from 1992 onwards, the Published By address is Borough Green, Kent
in 1972, the company name was changed from Geographers' Map Company to Geographers' A?Z Map Company.
About Motley creator:
Hailing from and currently residing in Manchester. I'm incredibly passionate about my city. The hope is that I can do my part to make it an interesting place to live.
Besides being best known for my street art, I enjoy working with the best possible medium to execute an idea. In true Motley fashion. Meaning mismatched and irregular. My work is less rooted in a common visual style and more based on the independent reaction to what inspired me in the first place.
I take inspiration from many sources. Elements of public space such as advertisements and signage are of particular interest. Given that street art is technically illegal, I'm fascinated by the visual elements of the street that are permitted.
My dream job would either be mayor of Manchester or Ikea bookshelf instructions designer.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG98KG - The 1975 are an English pop rock band from Manchester, consisting of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Matthew Matty Healy, lead guitarist Adam Hann, bassist Ross MacDonald, and drummer George Daniel. Their choice of name was inspired by a Jack Kerouac beat poetry book.
The band's origins trace to their attendance at Wilmslow High School in Cheshire and playing together as teenagers in 2002. Gigs organised by a council worker led the band to formally sign with Dirty Hit and Polydor Records. The band opened for several major acts and released a series of extended plays (Facedown, Sex, Music for Cars, IV) throughout 2012 before releasing their self-titled debut album (2013), which included the popular singles Sex, Chocolate, and Robbers, to a positive reception, reaching number one in the United Kingdom.
Their second album, I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it (2016), reached number one in the US and UK and received further acclaim from critics. Following the touring cycle for the record, the band announced their third album under the working title of Music for Cars, before going on hiatus again throughout 2017.
Returning in 2018, the band announced that the album had evolved into their third campaign cycle, consisting of their third and fourth studio albums. The first, A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships (2018), was released to critical praise, and became their third number one album in the UK. The second, Notes on a Conditional Form (2019), is due for release in May.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJ798E - The River Tib is a minor tributary of the River Medlock in Manchester, England. It has been culverted along its entire length since probably about 1820 and now runs beneath Manchester city centre. Tib Street (53?2901?N 2?1405?WCoordinates: 53?2901?N 2?1405?W) and Tib Lane are named after the watercourse.
During the Roman period, the Tib marked the boundary of the vicus or settlement of Mamucium
the river continued to mark Manchester's boundary until medieval times, as well as providing drinking water. A notion concerning The Tib's name, coined by Geoffrey Ashworth in his book The Lost Rivers of Manchester, is that the river was given its name by homesick Roman soldiers after the River Tiber, but with the word shortened to reflect the size difference between the two rivers. Alternatively, the name may derive from the Celtic word for watercourse.
The river's source is a spring in Miles Platting (53?2936?N 2?1308?W), from where it flows underneath Oldham Road and the eponymous Tib Street to reach the city centre. After flowing underneath West Mosley Street, the Tib crosses Princess Street to flow underneath the Manchester Town Hall extension, the Central Library and the Midland Hotel's dining room, before joining the Medlock at Gaythorn (now First Street, 53?2823?N 2?1452?W), close to Deansgate railway station.

SELF-made Manchester mosaicist Mark Kennedy has had seven mosaic art pieces installed on Tib Street along the wall of Affleck's Palace. The colourful and cracked pieces feature the likes of Eric Cantona, Colin Bell, Karl Marx, Morrissey, Ian Brown, Emmeline Pankhurst, Bet Lynch and many other 'legends' associated with Manchester.
In total Kennedy has spent almost 20 years crafting the two sets of mosaics amongst other on-going work. The theme on Affleck's is Manchester heroes, with a nod given the shopping bazaar's rock'n'roll past. Thus among the great figures of Manchester depicted there are musicians, actors, media and radical politicians.
He also couldn't help including something from his own Manchester memories of Tib Street.
When I was a little kid I used to go to Tib Street all the time to get my ferrets and buy mice from a little pet shop and that's where we all used to go. Next door was Tib Street Joke Shop that used to sell masks and stink bombs so there's one piece that represents all that.
You have to have a closer look at some of the new mosaics to fully appreciate them with some of them holding a few hidden surprises. Kennedy's take on Joy Division's classic Unknown Pleasures album cover features several tiny coloured tile fragments to set it apart from the now iconic original.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJ79A5 - Afflecks (formerly Affleck's Palace) is an indoor market in Manchester, England, in the city's Northern Quarter on the junction of Church Street/Tib Street and Dale Street with Oldham Street. Dozens of independent stalls, small shops and boutiques operate in the one building. The building was once occupied by a department store called Affleck and Brown as a store and office space, hence the name.
Affleck's Palace first opened in 1981 by James and Elaine Walsh with an ethos of offering a safe environment for entrepreneurs to start out with affordable rent and no long term contracts. Unit holders operated under a licence agreement which allowed them to pay for space on a week by week basis. The atmosphere and colourful maze-like layout led to Affleck's becoming a mecca for alternative culture. The establishment was able to bounce back from two building fires and overcame many obstacles.
During the 1990s 'Madchester Summer of Love' period ? when local bands like the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Inspiral Carpets were at the height of their popularity
Affleck's Palace was a fashionable spot to get oversized flared jeans and tie dyed T-shirts and 'Eastern Bloc' was a popular record shop as it dealt in all the latest underground dance tunes of the time.

This is a panorama of four hipstamatic shots taken on an iphone stiched together. It was taken in Manchester's Northern Quarter.
John Cooper Clarke (born 25 January 1949) is an English performance poet who first became famous during the punk rock era of the late 1970s when he became known as a 'punk poet'.[1] He released several albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and continues to perform regularly.
His recorded output has mainly centred around musical backing from The Invisible Girls, which featured Martin Hannett, Pete Shelley, Bill Nelson, Paul Burgess and Steve Hopkins.
His first releases were on the independent label Rabid, starting with the EP Innocents in October 1977. He toured with Bill Nelson's band Be-Bop Deluxe in 1978 and was signed by Epic Records, who issued the Nelson-produced debut album Disguise In Love in 1978.
In 1979 he had his only UK top 40 hit with 'Gimmix! (Play Loud)'. Clarke toured with Linton Kwesi Johnson, and has performed on the same bill as bands such as Sex Pistols, The Fall, Joy Division, Buzzcocks, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Elvis Costello, Rockpile, and New Order (including at their May 1984 Music for Miners benefit concert at London's Royal Festival Hall). His set is characterised by lively, rapid-fire renditions of his poems, usually performed a cappella. Often referred to as 'the bard of Salford', he usually refers to himself on stage as 'Johnny Clarke, the name behind the hairstyle'.
This mural which is just on the gable end of Cord bar is just around the corner from Tib St, the old seedy street that used to be home to pet shops and sex shops. These days its more arty bars, nice cafes and music venues. Still a bit seedy, reassuringly!

A Northern Soul is the second studio album by English alternative rock band The Verve. The album was released in the United States on 20 June 1995 on the Hut label and in the United Kingdom on 3 July 1995 on Vernon Yard Records. The title is a reference to Northern Soul, an integral part of Wigans history in the 1960's and early 1970's, popular dance/music movement.
Following their performance at Lollapalooza in 1994, The Verve returned to their Wigan-based practice room to begin writing and recording songs for their second studio album. Commenting on the effect that working in the 'dank rehearsal room' had on the band's songwriting process, frontman Richard Ashcroft stated: \u201cPractising in a dungeon in Wigan for this record, you're devoid of any kind of fashion, or thought of 'This is what we should be doing'. Like a band that goes into the studio and plays the music they hear in their heads rather than what they read in magazines.\u201d
Initially, the band tried to record the LP inside the rehearsal room itself, so that 'they could record as they had been rehearsing', but, when this approach proved to be impossible, they relocated the recording sessions to rural Wales with producer Owen Morris. Tom Hiney, writing for The Guardian in September 1997, claimed that the band's experience of recording during this period was 'intense and morose, but it produced an album that will still be listened to in 30 years' time. In my opinion, he was right on that one.
The band thought highly of the album, with drummer Peter Salisbury declaring it to be 'one of the best albums in the last 10 or 15 years. As good as Nirvana's or the Roses', and McCabe claiming it contained 'some of the best music I have ever heard by anyone'. The album was a moderate success upon its release, reaching no 13 on the UK album chart. However, in later years the album saw more acclaim, with readers of Q Magazine voting it the 53rd best album of all time in 1998, and NME ranking it as the 28th best album of all time in 2003 and the 13th best British album in 2006.
Locals will recognise this reflection in a road puddle, just down Tib Street Manchester. The Northern Quarter (N4 or NQ) is an area of Manchester City Centre, England, UK, generally marked out between Piccadilly, Victoria and Ancoats, and centred around Oldham Street, just off Piccadilly Gardens.
A centre of alternative and bohemian culture, the area is usually considered to be contained within Newton Street (borders with Piccadilly Basin), Great Ancoats Street (borders with Ancoats), Back Piccadilly (borders with Piccadilly Gardens) and Swan Street/High Street (borders with Shudehill/Arndale). Popular streets include Oldham Street, Tib Street, Newton Street, Lever Street, Dale Street, Hilton Street and Thomas Street.
The Northern Quarter is part of a larger area of Greater Manchester that is on a tentative list of nominated sites for UNESCO World Heritage Site Status, a position held since 1999. Its a great place to grab some vintage clothing at Aflecks Palace, some Belgian beer, chorizo burgers at Trof or a brilliant piece of cake with custard in 1950's surroundings at Sugar Junction. Did I mention the Night &
Day?
In my youth it was a street of XXX Sex Shops and pet shops. A funny mix. Its a lot less menacing than it was, fewer pet and sex shops, more trendy places &
eateries.
For Dave Haslam (I can read his music books all day if I can), the Northern Quarter became the last refuge of the Manchester music scene in the 1990s: 'A community, of sorts, had developed around music-makers wedded to experimentalism, from Andy Votel to Waiwan, nurtured at club nights such as Graham Massey's Toolshed and Mark Rae's Counter Culture ... In 1992, Frank Schofield and Martin Price (of 808 State) had lamented the fate of the independent record shop, yet within five years there were several new record shops in the Northern Quarter'.
When you next visit Manchester, checkout the Northern Quarter. Proper Manchestor!

Forming a soundtrack to much of my 1980's, 'The The' are an English musical and multimedia group that have been active in various forms since 1979, with singer/songwriter Matt Johnson being the only constant band member.
In 1993, the five-piece line-up issued the album Dusk containing this single. It debuted at no 2 in the UK and spun off three Top 40 singles in the UK, led by 'Dogs of Lust'. A world tour followed, the Lonely Planet tour, at which point the band's line-up was reshuffled
Johnny Marr and James Eller left, and were replaced by Atlanta based guitarist Keith Joyner and New York bassist Jared Nickerson, respectively.
Also added was Boston harmonica player Jim Fitting, who auditioned in New York in early 1993. The version of their hit 'This Is The Day' featuring Jim Fitting was often dubbed 'That Was The Day'. Palmer bowed out partway through the tour and was replaced by ex Stabbing Westward drummer Andy Kubiszewski.
A full length film, directed by long time collaborator Tim Pope, was made for this album. From Dusk Til Dawn was shot in New Orleans and New York and along with Johnson and Johnny Marr also featured various characters from the New York underground scene such as sexologist Annie Sprinkle, writer and raconteur Quentin Crisp, Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, and porn star Rick Savage amongst many other carnival characters.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2J880EP - Ian Curtis mural unveiled in the Northern Quarter ahead of mental health music festival.
A mural paying tribute to the late Ian Curtis has been unveiled in the Northern Quarter just in time for World Mental Health Day (today, Saturday 10 October)
The legendary musician, who was the lead singer and lyricist of post-punk band Joy Division, took his own life aged just 23 during a long struggle with depression.
The artwork was heartfully revealed by the late singer's former Joy Division bandmate Peter Hook (also The Light). The artist, Manchester-based Akse P19, says Ian Curtis was the perfect subject to try to create a conversation around mental health:
It was a pleasure meeting Peter Hook this week at the mural of Ian Curtis, says Akse. It's based on a photo by [photographer] Philip Pecarly.
It's hoped this striking homage to a Manchester music legend will encourage people to continue to speak out and seek help if they need it.
The brief was commissioned to launch Headstock Weekender festival ? a music and wellbeing festival taking place online this weekend ? which was originally scheduled for May.
Throughout today (Saturday) and Sunday, a programme of live performances, DJ sets, talks and wellbeing workshops are being streamed for free on the United We Stream platform.
The festival founder, Atheer Al-Salim, hopes it will help bring people together during a worrying and stressful time for those both in and out of the music industry.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RG98K1 - The City of Manchester in North-West England has traditionally been represented by various symbols. Most of these symbols are derived from heraldic emblems contained within the city's official heraldic achievement, which was officially adopted when the Borough of Manchester was granted city status in 1842. Notably, the motif of the worker bee has been widely used to represent the city as a symbol of industry
The worker bee has long been a symbol of Manchester and of the city's hard-working past.
And while every other city in the north of England has a heritage built upon industry - there is a reason that the bee symbol is a part of Manchester's coat of arms which was given to the city in 1842.
In the 1800s Manchester was awash with textile mills that were commonly described as ?hives of activity' and the workers inside them compared to bees.
?Busy bee' is still a term associated with industriousness and hard work.
These days Manchester is a city mostly associated with a deep and rich pop culture and a musical history that has influenced artists all over the globe. Coincidentally, the former Sankeys nightclub in Ancoats is housed in the former Beehive Mill on Jersey Street.

You won't just find the bee on bins dotted around the city though. The bee can be seen on the clock face of the Palace Hotel, on the mosaic flooring at Manchester Town Hall and even above the arches of Links of London.
Furthermore, urban beekeeping even takes place on the roof of The Printworks , thus producing local honey.
Following the Manchester Arena bombing on May 22, 2017, the worker bee became a symbol of unity and defiance in the wake of the attack.
It has come to represent Manchester's indomitable spirit.
An image of 22 Manchester worker bees was emblazoned on a wall on the side of the Koffee Pot building in the heart of the Northern Quarter.
Each bee, pictured swarming around a honey heart, represents one of the innocent people
