Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJPB - This photograph shows the exterior signage of a Warhammer store in Manchester city centre, featuring the distinctive hammer-and-wing logo and bold black-and-white branding associated with the tabletop gaming franchise. Warhammer is produced and retailed by Games Workshop, a British company founded in the 1970s that has grown into a globally recognised name in fantasy and science fiction gaming.
The Manchester store forms part of Games Workshop's network of dedicated retail outlets across the UK and internationally, selling miniature figures, rulebooks, paints, and accessories for Warhammer games such as Warhammer 40,000 and Age of Sigmar. These shops often double as community spaces, hosting demonstrations, painting sessions, and organised play, helping sustain a strong hobby culture alongside direct retail.
The sign's clean, high-contrast design makes it instantly recognisable to fans of the brand, while its placement on a modern city centre frontage reflects the mainstreaming of gaming and hobby retail within high street environments. Once considered niche, tabletop gaming now sits comfortably alongside fashion, technology, and food outlets in major urban shopping areas.
Taken in daylight, the image works both as a straightforward record of branded retail signage and as an illustration of contemporary pop culture presence on the British high street. It is suitable for editorial use in stories about gaming culture, specialist retail, leisure industries, and the changing mix of city centre shopping in Manchester and other UK cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJR3 - This image shows the illuminated red neon FREIGHT ISLAND sign and arrow fixed to a weathered brick wall at Freight Island, part of the Depot Mayfield redevelopment in Manchester city centre. The signage sits on a robust industrial façade, the sort of hard-wearing urban fabric that once belonged to the working rail and warehouse landscape around Piccadilly and the Mayfield area.
What makes the sign work, commercially and editorially, is the layering. It is not just a neon sign, it is a very deliberate bit of identity and wayfinding that signals a new use for an old structure. The red glow and arrow shout nightlife and movement, while the brickwork, ageing mortar lines and stray tufts of greenery quietly keep the building's industrial past in the frame. Manchester does this a lot: keep the bones, change the purpose, then brand it hard.
Freight Island has become associated with the city's contemporary leisure economy: street food, bars, live events and big crowds, wrapped inside a repurposed industrial shell. The sign captures that shift in one hit, industrial heritage reframed as a destination. Shot in daylight, the neon still reads clearly against the brick, giving buyers a strong, legible urban detail image that can illustrate stories about regeneration, city culture, hospitality, placemaking and Manchester's continuing transformation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X2CG3J - This image shows a striking illuminated neon sign displaying the words Come and Worship, rendered in bright blue neon tubing and framed by a contrasting green neon border. The sign is located on Oldham Street in Manchester city centre, an area strongly associated with nightlife, independent music venues, bars, and alternative culture within the Northern Quarter.
The message presents a deliberate and thought-provoking contrast between religious language and its urban surroundings. Oldham Street is better known for live music, late-night venues, record shops, and street culture than overt expressions of faith, making the presence of a Christian worship message visually and culturally arresting. The glowing neon typography echoes commercial signage styles more commonly associated with entertainment or retail, blending religious invitation with the visual language of the night-time city.
Photographed at night, the sign's illumination stands out sharply against a dark background, emphasising the clarity of the text and the symbolic impact of faith displayed openly in a secular urban environment. The image reflects wider themes in contemporary British cities, including the coexistence of belief systems, the visibility of religion in public spaces, and the use of modern visual forms to communicate traditional spiritual messages.
This photograph has strong editorial relevance for themes of religion, belief, spirituality, urban culture, modern Britain, social commentary, and the interaction between faith and nightlife in city centres.

Modelled after the spacious, light, mahogany-trimmed taverns being promoted by the beer industry, the late Victorian coffee house was a conscious attempt by naive social workers to lure the working men from their pubs and the perils of demon drink. Coffee taverns, one pamphlet stated, must show there are beverages as comforting as beer, that there are beverages to be bought as cheap as beer. And they must provide advantages not provided by such a formidable enemy and by this manoeuvre make victory certain. Accordingly, working-men were encouraged to bring their own food to be cooked free of charge in the tavern's kitchen. Newspapers and games were laid out - also gratis - and customers were encouraged to remain as long as they wanted. Needless to say, none of these coffee taverns survived long on their own.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PFAAAD - The Fall Extricate tour opened 01/03/1990 at Poole arts centre, closing 26/03/1990 at the Top rank Brighton - Cog Sinister
Extricate is the 12th album by post-punk band the Fall. It was made immediately after bandleader Mark E. Smith divorced guitarist Brix Smith. Brix's departure helped define the sound of this album: her background vocals and relatively pop-oriented guitar, which had become mainstays of The Fall, are noticeably absent in this release. In one of the more unusual events in the group's career, she was replaced by founding former member Martin Bramah, who had previously left the group in 1979 to form his own group Blue Orchids.
Lead-off single Telephone Thing could have been seen as a nod to the Manchester scene of the time as the sound is quite similar to the dance-influenced music that was being released by Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses in 1989. However, its origins were in Smith's previous collaboration with Coldcut on their track I'm in Deep, which, in turn, led to Coldcut producing the track and Black Monk Theme Part II, one of two tracks by 60s garage band The Monks to be covered on the album (the other being Black Monk Theme The Fall retitled both tracks). Elsewhere, Bramah, appearing on his first Fall album since Live at the Witch Trials adds a distinctly raw, even rockabilly sound to some of the songs. However, the album's best-known track was one of the least typical of the group's catalogue: Bill Is Dead, a slow-paced tender love song which topped John Peel's Festive Fifty that year, the only occasion in the DJ's lifetime when his favourite band would do so. Although originally conceived by Smith and Craig Scanlon as a parody of The Smiths, Smith changed lyrical tack when he decided Scanlon's music deserved better, delivering a highly personal lyric. However, at Smith's insistence, it was not released as a single.
The critical reception to Extricate was largely positive

Customers say lives upended by ripped up schedules and woeful performance. More at https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/may/09/transpennine-express-awaits-contract-decision-amid-poor-service-record
Once, it seemed like a good idea to live in the Pennines and commute by train. Susannah Simmons, a violinist at Opera North, moved to Marsden for quick and easy access to her work in Leeds and Manchester. The service was far from perfect but satisfactory, she says. But for at least the past year nearly all trains I would have used have been cancelled or delayed, forcing me to drive everywhere.
Like countless others, her life has been upended by ripped-up schedules and woeful performance of TransPennine Express.
Ministers are expected to announce this week whether the operator will be replaced or awarded a fresh deal potentially for up to eight years.
Expectations are that TPE, owned by London-listed First Group the only remaining British transport firm operating passenger trains on the UK's privatised railway - will be given another chance to turn operations around, with a short extension of six to 12 months when its contract expires on 28 May.
But train failures are a potent political issue in the north. The announcement was withheld until after the local elections and the results of last week's vote and the potential for further backlash in red wall seats have given ministers further pause before renewing First's contract, according to a source close to the process.
MPs and mayors across the north have urged the government to get a grip after the operator's abysmal record of delayed, disrupted and cancelled services whose true extent was only officially confirmed after the regulator warned firms against concealing last-minute schedule changes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M69C9X - Liquor (or a spirit) is an alcoholic drink produced by distillation of grains, fruits, vegetables, or sugar, that have already gone through alcoholic fermentation. Other terms for liquor include: spirit drink, distilled beverage, spirituous liquor or hard liquor. The distillation process concentrates the liquid to increase its alcohol by volume. As liquors contain significantly more alcohol (ethanol) than other alcoholic drinks, they are considered 'harder'
in North America, the term hard liquor is sometimes used to distinguish distilled alcoholic drinks from non-distilled ones, whereas the term spirits is more common in the UK. Some examples of liquors include vodka, rum, gin, and tequila. Liquors are often aged in barrels, such as for the production of brandy and whiskey, or are infused with flavorings to form a flavored liquor such as absinthe.
While the word liquor ordinarily refers to distilled alcoholic spirits rather than beverages produced by fermentation alone, it can sometimes be used more broadly to refer to any alcoholic beverage (or even non-alcoholic products of distillation or various other liquids).
Like other alcoholic drinks, liquor is typically consumed for the psychoactive effects of alcohol. Liquor may be consumed on its own ('neat'), typically in amounts of around 50 millilitres (1.7 US fluid ounces) per served drink. In an undiluted form, distilled beverages are often slightly sweet, and bitter, and typically impart a burning mouthfeel, with an odor derived from the alcohol and the production and aging processes
the exact flavor varies between different varieties of liquor and the different impurities they impart. Liquor is also frequently mixed with other ingredients to form a cocktail.
Rapid consumption of a large amount of liquor can cause severe alcohol intoxication or alcohol poisoning, which can be fatal. Consistent consumption of liquor over time correlates with higher mortality and other harmful health effects

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JGJEE9 - One of Chinatown's most noticeable landmarks is the archway on Faulkner Street. The paifang, underneath which road traffic passes, was specially built in China and shipped over in three containers. Construction commenced over Christmas 1986 and was completed by Easter 1987, a year after the city of Manchester was twinned with Wuhan. The structure was a gift from Manchester City Council to the Chinese community, and is adorned with dragons and phoenixes.
After many years exposed to the elements, the arch required restoration work to be undertaken
netting was wrapped around a part of the structure to prevent further tiles from dislodging. The Manchester Chinatown Community Group undertook a series of charity events, including a dry land dragon boat race in June 2012. In early 2013 the archway was repaired by Manchester and Cheshire Construction Company. It is the only one in Europe and regarded as more decorative than the one in San Francisco. Designed and built by a team of engineers from Peking, it is decorated with ceramics, lacquer, paint and gold leaf.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JGM7D3 - Panoramic view of Deansgate-Castlefield in Manchester, looking across Deansgate Locks, the railway viaduct, red brick railway arches, street junctions and modern high-rise residential towers under a partly cloudy blue sky. The image shows the layered character of this part of Manchester city centre, where nineteenth-century railway infrastructure, canal-side leisure uses and twenty-first-century skyline development sit close together. Deansgate Locks is the converted railway arch leisure area at the southern end of Deansgate on Whitworth Street West, near Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink stop and the Rochdale Canal. The tall glass towers in the background are part of the wider Great Jackson Street and Deansgate Square high-rise cluster, a major residential and regeneration area on the southern edge of the city centre. This photograph is useful for editorial and commercial subjects including Manchester regeneration, urban skyline change, city living, high-rise apartments, leisure districts, transport infrastructure, tram and rail connections, canal heritage, architecture and the changing face of the North West's largest city centre. The scene combines historic red brick structures, modern glass towers, streets, traffic lights, pedestrian routes and city-centre public realm, making it suitable for stories about planning, development pressure, tall buildings, urban density, heritage contrast and inner-city leisure economies. The weather appears bright but changeable, with white and grey clouds, patches of blue sky and clear daylight giving the image an open, contemporary feel. It can also illustrate Deansgate-Castlefield as a gateway between Castlefield, Deansgate, First Street, Manchester Central, Oxford Road and the expanding residential skyline south of the city centre. The image works best as a broad Manchester cityscape and regeneration view rather than a single-property photograph.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JGM7E8 - The Tower of Light is a 40-metre tall tower supporting and enclosing flues for a new low-carbon energy centre in Manchester's city centre. The biomimetic structure has built on the decade-long innovation and research, Shell Lace Structure, pioneered by Tonkin Liu and developed in collaboration with engineers at Arup. Learning from geometries in nature, the tower's form is its strength. The super-light, super-thin single-surface structure uses the least material to achieve the most. The tower is constructed from 6 and 8mm thick flat steel sheets, tailored, laser-cut, then welded together to create a curved stiff strong surface. Modern methods of construction using advanced digital modelling, analysis, and fabrication, combined with principles of tailoring, have made the Shell Lace Structure innovation possible. This is the largest built Shell Lace Structure to date.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2J880EK - A sharp editorial image showing a large yellow PAY HERE sign set against a modern block of new flats, creating a witty visual juxtaposition about the cost of renting, housing affordability and the changing rules for private tenants in England. The image is useful for coverage of the Renters' Rights Act 2025, with major private rented sector reforms taking effect from 1 May 2026, including the end of assured shorthold tenancies and the move to periodic tenancies, stronger protection against no-fault eviction, new rules around rent increases and limits on rent in advance. The bold sign in the foreground points downwards like an instruction to pay, while the apartment building behind it suggests new build flats, urban housing markets, landlord income, tenant pressure and the continuing debate about who benefits from rising rents and housing investment. The scene works well as a stock image for articles on renters' rights, letting agents, private landlords, build-to-rent, city flats, cost of living pressures, housing reform, property markets and the affordability gap facing many households. It can also illustrate commentary about whether legal reform alone can protect renters when rents remain high and housing supply remains constrained. The bright summer daylight, blue sky, brick facade, balconies and windows provide a clean contemporary urban backdrop, while the humorous sign adds a slightly satirical documentary edge. There are no visible people, allowing the picture to operate as a flexible concept image for newspapers, policy papers, housing blogs, campaigning material and public information features. The wording PAY HERE makes the photograph immediately readable at thumbnail size and gives it strong commercial potential for searches connected with rent, payment, bills, landlords, tenancy reform, English housing policy, monthly costs, deposits, affordability, tenant security and the politics of private renting.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ADR29X - Via bar on Canal Street in Manchester's Gay Village, photographed at night with coloured exterior lighting, illuminated signage, awnings and people moving along the pavement. The image captures the lively evening atmosphere of one of Manchester city centre's best known LGBTQ+ nightlife areas, where Canal Street, the Rochdale Canal and nearby streets are associated with queer culture, Pride events, cabaret, bars, clubs, restaurants and tourism. Via Manchester is listed at 28-30 Canal Street, Manchester M1 3EZ, and its own venue information describes it as a friendly local LGBTQ+ bar with live entertainment seven days a week. The venue also describes itself as open since 1995 and as the grande dame of Canal Street, a long standing part of the Gay Village's entertainment scene. This editorial image is useful for coverage of Manchester Pride, LGBTQ+ travel, nightlife, city breaks, inclusive tourism, cabaret venues, evening economy, urban leisure, hospitality, queer history and the cultural identity of Manchester. The visible VIA signs, colourful rainbow-style lighting and twilight street scene give the photograph strong search value for articles about Canal Street, the Gay Village, Pride weekends, LGBTQIA+ venues, night-time economy, bars and live entertainment in North West England. The picture also works for broader features on city centre regeneration, tourism marketing, weekend breaks, hospitality recovery, pub and bar culture, Manchester after dark and the importance of LGBTQ+ venues as social and cultural anchors. The mix of deep blue dusk sky, bright coloured lights, brick architecture and blurred passers-by creates a sense of movement and excitement while keeping the venue frontage as the main documentary subject. Editorial use should recognise that the venue name and visible signage may be protected branding, so the image is best suited to news, travel, culture, nightlife and documentary contexts

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RPGEFB - M Nairn & Co Ltd were the firm of Michael Nairn, specialising in floor-cloths, power looms and linoleum.
And according to that excellent site Grace's Guide to British Industrial History at the 1862 Exhibition in London and the 1867 Paris Exhibition Nairns Floorcloth came into its own and won the prizes.
In 1870 Nairn and Co built a six-storey factory in Kirkcaldy and by 1877 with the introduction of linoleum, Kirkcaldy soon became the largest producer of the new floorcovering in the world.
In the 1920s the family joined forces with a supplier in Erie, Pennsylvania, which manufactured a three-foot wide simulated wood grain product used to border area rugs and linoleum.
This product was known as Congoleum, because the asphalt materials used to make it came from the Belgian Congo in Africa.
The new company called itself Congoleum-Nairn.
Congoleum-Nairn continued to sell Congoleum Gold Seal Rugs and Nairn linoleum through the late 1930's, until its researchers started experimenting with a new material called vinyl.
However, further research into developing vinyl flooring was interrupted when World War II began.
Following the war, the company continued to grow in the rapidly expanding housing market of that period.
2008 Forbo-Nairn is now the UK's only linoleum manufacturer. Forbo-Nairn have their own website.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RF7M0D - Manchester Piccadilly is the principal railway station in Manchester, England. Opened as Store Street in 1842, it was renamed Manchester London Road in 1847 and Manchester Piccadilly in 1960. Located to the south-east of Manchester city centre, it hosts long-distance intercity and cross-country services to national destinations including London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Bristol and Southampton
regional services to destinations in Northern England including Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle and York
and local commuter services around Greater Manchester. It is one of 19 major stations managed by Network Rail. The station has 14 platforms, twelve terminal and two through platforms. Piccadilly is also a major interchange with the Metrolink light rail system with two tram platforms in its undercroft.
Piccadilly is the busiest station in the Manchester station group with nearly 28 million passenger entries and exits between April 2017 and March 2018, (the other major stations in Manchester are Oxford Road and Victoria). It is the fourth busiest station in the United Kingdom outside London. The station hosts services from six train operating companies. It is the second busiest interchange station outside London, with almost 3.8 million passengers changing trains annually.
Between the late 1990s and early 2000s, Piccadilly Station was refurbished, taking five years and costing £100 million (in 2002), it was the most expensive improvement on the UK rail network at the time. Further improvements and expansion plans have been mooted. In October 2016, a Transport and Works Act application was submitted for the construction of two platforms as part of the Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Oxford Road Capacity Scheme. As of 2018, this application has not been approved by the government. To allow the station to accommodate high speed services under High Speed 2 proposals, five platforms would be required and the Metrolink station would be reconfigured.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RF7M10 - 40 homeless people, a New York street artist and two local creatives create a massive Manchester mural
The Doodle on Ducie Street has been created to launch the inaugural International Arts and Homelessness Summit and Festival
The mural, The Doodle on Ducie Street, has been created to launch the inaugural International Arts and Homelessness Summit and Festival in November which aims to raise awareness of homelessness and support homeless people.
We had almost 40 artists working on this and we came together just one week ago, said street artist and activist Joel.
It's been an intense week. We got together and asked what we could create that would represent everyone and what message or story we wanted to tell. Everyone made sketches and we made a composition, then each day we came out and worked on it.
Now the wall is a wondrous array of colour, inspired by Joel's signature style, designed to encourage conversation perfect for the upcoming festival.
The unique creative team was organised with the help of With One Voice, an organisation which sets out to tackle homelessness in a creative way.
Everyone came together and decided what was important to them. We came up with this concept of the guy on the mural, he's flying through the air from challenges in his life to a brighter future, said With One Voice director, Matt Peacock.
It's been an amazing experience, says Matt. We were really conscious that we were putting this piece of public art in the centre of Manchester, where homelessness has been on the rise. For many years people would rightly say, why art?'
And the reasons for that, which I hope you can see, are so many things it's about personal and societal regeneration, it's about telling a different story about homelessness, and giving a voice to people who are and have been homeless to say what they want to say to the public.
The artists have found the experience a boost to their confidence.
I wanted to get involved with the mural because I

Organised by Queerchester, which lobbies and fundraises for arts and culture initiatives in the gay village, the project saw the entries of the street art competition winners Glenn Jones (the overall winner), Lauren Jo Kelly, Adam Pryce and Mark Wallis become bigger than they could ever have imagined with the help of renowned graffiti artists Aylo (Hayley Garner) and Cbloxx (Joy Gilleard). Over 950 online votes and 7 judges chose between 29 brilliantly creative entries to pick the winners.

legendary drag queens Anna Phylactic (top) and Foo Foo Lammar (top right). The others are feminist Emmeline Pankhurst (top left), writer Quentin Crisp (bottom left) and scientist Alan Turing (bottom right). Lauren Jo Kelly designed Anna while Glenn Jones created the other four. Adam Pryce's cute critters in the top left above the rainbow and Mark Wallis' naked man below it complete the work of art.
If you've been around the village during the last week or so you may have seen the mural, which was done using spray paint instead of brushes, in progress. Have you been to see it and what are your thoughts? Would you like to see more art like this around Canal Street and the rest of Manchester? We certainly would!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF5JR - Turing has been honoured in various ways in Manchester, the city where he worked towards the end of his life. In 1994, a stretch of the A6010 road (the Manchester city intermediate ring road) was named Alan Turing Way. A bridge carrying this road was widened, and carries the name Alan Turing Bridge. A statue of Turing was unveiled in Manchester on 23 June 2001 in Sackville Park, between the University of Manchester building on Whitworth Street and Canal Street. The memorial statue depicts the father of computer science sitting on a bench at a central position in the park. Turing is shown holding an apple. The cast bronze bench carries in relief the text 'Alan Mathison Turing 19121954', and the motto 'Founder of Computer Science' as it could appear if encoded by an Enigma machine: 'IEKYF ROMSI ADXUO KVKZC GUBJ'. However, the meaning of the coded message is disputed, as the 'u' in 'computer' matches up with the 'u' in 'ADXUO'. As a letter encoded by an enigma machine can not appear as itself, the actual message behind the code is uncertain.[207]
Turing memorial statue plaque in Sackville Park, Manchester
A plaque at the statue's feet reads 'Father of computer science, mathematician, logician, wartime codebreaker, victim of prejudice'. There is also a Bertrand Russell quotation: Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beautya beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture. The sculptor buried his own old Amstrad computer under the plinth as a tribute to the godfather of all modern computers - The Alan Turing Memorial, situated in Sackville Park in Manchester, England, is in memory of Alan Turing, a pioneer of modern computing. Turing is believed to have committed suicide in 1954 two years after being convicted of gross indecency (i.e. homosexual acts). As such he is as much a gay icon as an icon of computing, and it is no coincidence that this memorial is situated near Canal Street, Manchester's gay village.

At night time, and in daytime in the warmer months, the street is filled with visitors, often including gay and lesbian tourists from all over the world. The northern end of the street meets Minshull Street and the southern meets Princess Street
part of the street looks across the Rochdale Canal into Sackville Park.
90's Focus led to several of the pubs on or near Canal Street acquiring a predominantly gay clientele. In 1991, Manto (Manchester Tomorrow) bar opened at no. 46. It was built in 1989 by Benedict Smith Architects. Unlike the other gay bars at that time, Manto had large glass windows, allowing the casual passer-by to view what was going on inside. Previously, many establishments catering for the gay community were often keen to conceal activities from the general public, but the architectural design of Manto was seen as a queer visual statement of we're here, we're queer get used to it, and a brick-and-mortar refusal to hide any more, or to remain underground and invisible.
Over the next decade, more numerous and larger bars opened along the canal side, turning Canal Street into the centre of the most successful gay village in Europe. Because of this, the Canal Street street signs are regularly defaced to read Anal Treet or Anal Street. The success was further enhanced by the use of Canal Street and its bars in several television series, including Bob and Rose and Queer as Folk, both written by Russell T Davies. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF5XF - The park contains the Alan Turing memorial statue, which depicts the father of modern computing sitting on a bench at a central position in the park. The park was chosen because, It's got the university science buildings ... on one side and its got all the gay bars on the other side, where apparently he spent most of his evenings
The statue was unveiled on 23 June, Turing's birthday, in 2001. It was conceived by Richard Humphry, a barrister from Stockport, who set up the Alan Turing Memorial Fund in order to raise the necessary funds. Humphry had come up with the idea of a statue after seeing Hugh Whitemore's play Breaking the Code starring the actor Sir Derek Jacobi, and Jacobi became the patron of the fund. Glyn Hughes, an industrial sculptor from Adlington near Westhoughton, was commissioned to sculpt the statue. The Fund eventually raised around £15,000, which was far short of the £50,000 needed to have the statue cast in Britain. No major computer company donated to the fund, which was, according to the sculptor, because Turing was not American. The statue was cast in China.
Turing is shown holding an applea symbol classically used to represent forbidden love, as well as being the fruit of the tree of knowledge, the object that inspired Isaac Newton's theory of gravitation, and the means of Turing's own death. The cast bronze bench carries in relief the text 'Alan Mathison Turing 1912-1954', and the motto 'Founder of Computer Science' as it would appear if encoded by an Enigma machine: 'IEKYF ROMSI ADXUO KVKZC GUBJ'.
A plinth at the statue's feet says 'Father of computer science, mathematician, logician, wartime codebreaker, victim of prejudice'. There is also a Bertrand Russell quotation saying 'Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beautya beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture.' The sculptor buried his old Amstrad computer, which was an early popular home computer, under the plinth.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF61J - Black Maria
These vehicles were usually painted black or a very dark blue. In the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand and the United States, a police wagon was also sometimes called a Black Maria (/məˈraɪə/ mə-RY-ə). The origin of this term is equally uncertain. The name Black Maria is common for race horses beginning with an 1832 appearance in Niles Weekly Register (Oct. 10) and then again in Colburn's New Monthly Magazine and Humorist (1841). The OED lists the first usage as the Boston Evening Traveller from 1847 which mentions them as a new type of wagon. An example from Philadelphia was published in 1852. Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable suggests the name came from Maria Lee, a large and fearsome black keeper of a sailors' boarding house whom the police would call on for help with difficult prisoners. The French detective novel Monsieur Lecoq, published in 1868 by Émile Gaboriau, uses the term Black Maria when referring to a police van. In his 1949 song Saturday Night Fish Fry, Louis Jordan mentions a Black Maria.
The term is still used today in parts of Britain for the vehicle that transports prisoners from gaol to court, appearing in the songs Guns of Brixton by The Clash, Singing for the Lonely by Robbie Williams, The Curse of Millhaven by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Adios Hermanos by Paul Simon. Frequently, blackened-windowed buses are also used for the same purpose.[8] In the 1950s, many police forces in the United Kingdom, including the Metropolitan Police, used half-ton Morris Commercial vans, painted black, as Black Marias.[citation needed]
The term also exists in Norwegian, where the same vehicle is called maja or svartemaja (alt. -marje, -marja), originating from Black Maria, in Icelandic as Svarta María and in Finnish as mustamaija. In Serbian, Croatian and Slovene, it is marica (with a small m), while Marica with a capital M is a diminutive of several female names.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RDAWB5 - Akt (stylised as akt and legally known as The Albert Kennedy Trust) is a voluntary organisation based in England, created in 1989 to serve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ+) young people who are homeless or living in a hostile environment. It started in Greater Manchester in 1989 and opened in London in 1996, and expanded to Newcastle in 2013, Newcastle upon Tyne and Bristol.
History
The charity is named after Albert Kennedy (31 January 1973 30 April 1989), a 16-year-old Social Services care leaver from Manchester who was gay. Kennedy died after falling from the top of Chorlton Street multi-storey car park. Despite an inquest the circumstances of his death remain unclear. The official version is that he died from misadventure.
Kennedy had experienced a great deal of homophobia during his life. Manchester's gay community was moved into action by the Trust's founder patron Cath Hall. Cath Hall was a straight foster carer who saw the need for an organisation to be set up to support young lesbian, gay, bi and trans people who were facing homelessness because of rejection at home. She had observed that Kennedy's case was not isolated, and that many other LGBTQ+ young people in and out of the foster care system were struggling with the effects of homophobia. Hall described the founding of the trust as an emotional response, an angry response, to what was going on.
As a result, the Albert Kennedy Trust was formed, officially becoming a Trust in 1990.
In 2019 the Albert Kennedy Trust rebranded as akt.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RDAWNP - The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (SPI), also called Order of Perpetual Indulgence (OPI), is a charitable, protest, and street performance movement that uses drag and religious imagery to satirize issues of sex, gender, and morality (particularly Christian perspectives on these topics) and fundraise for charity. In 1979, a small group of gay men in San Francisco began wearing the attire of Catholic nuns in visible situations using camp to promote various social and political causes in the Castro District.
From the original organization in San Francisco, the Sisters have grown throughout the U.S., Canada, Australia, Europe, and South America, and are now an international network of autonomous orders. These orders are mostly registered as non-profit charity organizations that raise money for AIDS, LGBT-related causes, and mainstream community service organizations, while promoting safer sex and educating others about the harmful effects of drug use and other high risk behaviors. They have also protested many Christian, and specifically Catholic, events perceived as anti-LGBT, including the visit of Pope John Paul II to the United States.
Throughout the movement's history there have been a number of conflicts with Christian communities. The group has been characterized by some Catholics (such as the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights) as anti-Catholic and a hate-group for impersonating and mocking Catholic practices and beliefs, including religious sisters

About time I featured a slab of Detroit Techno here.
Model 500 &
Infiniti were names used by Juan Atkins. He is widely credited as the originator of techno music, specifically Detroit techno along with Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. The three, sometimes called the Belleville Three, attended high school together in Belleville, Michigan, near Detroit.
At age sixteen, Atkins heard electronic music for the first time, which would prove to be a life-changing experience. In late-1990s interviews, he recalls the sound of synthesizers as being like 'UFOs landing.' He soon had his first synthesizer and abandoned playing funk bass.
\u201c When I first heard synthesizers dropped on records it was great\u2026 like UFOs landing on records, so I got one.
\u2026It wasn\u2019t any one particular group that turned me on to synthesizers, but 'Flashlight' (Parliament's number one R &
B hit from early 1978) was the first record I heard where maybe 75 percent of the production was electronic.'
The first publicized UFO sightings were usually referred to using the term mystery airships, which were commonly seen and described as such during the latter part of the 19th century and the early 20th.
The term foo fighters was used by American fighter pilots during World War II to refer to UFOs.
The first widely publicized U.S. sighting, reported by private pilot Kenneth Arnold in June 1947, gave rise to the popular terms 'flying saucer' and 'flying disc', of which the former is still sometimes used, even though Arnold said the most of the objects he saw were not totally circular and one was crescent-shaped (see Kenneth Arnold UFO sighting for details). In addition, the infamous Roswell UFO Incident occurred at about the same time, which only served to further fuel public interest in the topic.
The term 'UFO' was first suggested in 1952 by Cpt. Edward J. Ruppelt, who headed Project Blue Book, then the USAF's official investigation of UFOs. Ruppelt felt that 'flying saucer' did not reflect the diversity of the sightings. He suggested that UFO should be pronounced as a word \u2013 you-foe. However it is now usually pronounced by forming each letter: U.F.O. His term was quickly adopted by the United States Air Force, which also briefly used 'UFOB'. The Air Force initially defined UFOs as those objects that remain unidentified after scrutiny by expert investigators, though today the term UFO is often used for any unexplained sighting regardless of whether it has been investigated.
Because the term UFO is ambiguous \u2013 referring either to any unidentified sighting, or in popular usage to alien spacecraft \u2013 and the public and media ridicule sometimes associated with the topic, some investigators now prefer to use other terms such as unidentified aerial phenomenon (or UAP).
For trivia buffs, the equivalent acronym for UFO in Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian is OVNI (Objeto Volador No Identificado, Objeto Voador N\u00e3o Identificado, Objet volant non identifi\u00e9 or Oggetto Volante Non Identificato).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3BR17C1 - This commercially useful editorial image shows This is Manchester, famous quote, We do things differently here red neon sign, city centre, Greater Manchester. The row metadata places the subject at Manchester, England, UK. The spreadsheet date indicates 28 June 2025, so the picture can also work as a time-specific archive record. Plainly, the image is useful because it shows We do things differently here, This is Manchester, neon, red, bars, Manchester, Mancunian, Manc, with search-relevant terms including We do things differently here, This is Manchester, neon, red, bars, Manchester, Mancunian, Manc, tourist, destination, famous, quote, M1, M2. Hospitality images often work beyond simple venue illustration, because pubs and bars speak to tourism, music, night-time economies, independent trade and changing social habits. Manchester is strongly associated with industry, music, football, railways, political culture and northern civic pride. A real city-centre detail can support stories about regeneration, identity, public services, transport and everyday urban life. Pub and bar imagery can illustrate the changing British and Irish hospitality trade, real-ale culture, night-time economies, independent businesses, tourism districts, licensing, social life and the pressure on high streets and leisure spending. The image can work as a lead picture, a supporting cutaway, a contextual inset or a visual metaphor for wider stories about place, services, consumer behaviour, heritage, transport, culture and public life. Historically and socially, this kind of image can help connect past and present: older streets, civic institutions, transport systems, shops, signs, political messages or public services are not frozen museum pieces, but part of how people understand modern life, local identity and economic change.
