It opened on 27 April 1992 as G-Mex tram stop, taking its name from the adjacent G-Mex Centre, a concert, conference and exhibition venue
the G-Mex Centre was rebranded as Manchester Central in 2007, prompting the Metrolink stop to be renamed on 20 September 2010.[1] The station underwent redevelopment in 201415 to add an extra platform in preparation for the completion of the Second City Crossing in 201617.
Deansgate-Castlefield serves as a transport hub by integrating with National Rail services from Deansgate railway station by a footbridge. Exits from the station lead to the Great Northern Warehouse, the reconstructed Mamucium Roman Fort, the Beetham Tower, and Deansgate Locks. Part of Zone 1, the stop is one of the most used on the Metrolink network.
In August 2010 Metrolink announced it would be changing the name of the stop from 'G-Mex' to 'Deansgate-Castlefield'. On 2 September 2010, signs at the stop were changed to 'Deansgate-Castlefield'
a couple of days later temporary vinyl GMEX stickers were placed on top which were removed on 20 September 2010 when the name change was made.

Extricate is the 12th album by post-punk band the Fall. It was made immediately after bandleader Mark E. Smith divorced guitarist Brix Smith. Brix's departure helped define the sound of this album: her background vocals and relatively pop-oriented guitar, which had become mainstays of The Fall, are noticeably absent in this release. In one of the more unusual events in the group's career, she was replaced by founding former member Martin Bramah, who had previously left the group in 1979 to form his own group Blue Orchids.
Lead-off single Telephone Thing could have been seen as a nod to the Manchester scene of the time as the sound is quite similar to the dance-influenced music that was being released by Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses in 1989. However, its origins were in Smith's previous collaboration with Coldcut on their track I'm in Deep, which, in turn, led to Coldcut producing the track and Black Monk Theme Part II, one of two tracks by 60s garage band The Monks to be covered on the album (the other being Black Monk Theme The Fall retitled both tracks). Elsewhere, Bramah, appearing on his first Fall album since Live at the Witch Trials adds a distinctly raw, even rockabilly sound to some of the songs. However, the album's best-known track was one of the least typical of the group's catalogue: Bill Is Dead, a slow-paced tender love song which topped John Peel's Festive Fifty that year, the only occasion in the DJ's lifetime when his favourite band would do so. Although originally conceived by Smith and Craig Scanlon as a parody of The Smiths, Smith changed lyrical tack when he decided Scanlon's music deserved better, delivering a highly personal lyric. However, at Smith's insistence, it was not released as a single.

This was one of 16 TDD64's, known as the Dominion, which entered service in 1951 and were type TDD64/1, the only ones constructed. Fleet number is 1250 and carries registration number JVU 755. Crossley were relatively late coming into trolleybus manufacture. They had been the major supplier of motor buses to Manchester Corporation and it was only after Manchester announced their intention to convert some tram routes to trolleybus operation that Crossley took up trolleybus production from 1936. The first Manchester vehicles were delivered for the commencement of trolleybus operation in 1938.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K23M7R - The Manchester Ship Canal Company was formed in 1882 with the aim of linking Manchester to the sea via a navigable canal and river route. The idea had been floating around since 1660, but it was the Manchester manufacturer Daniel Adamson who brought together the men who could actually make it happen in June of 1882. The bill that they proposed to Parliament was initially rejected, but was finally passed in May 1885, and was known as the Manchester Ship Canal Act 1885.
The ship canal took six years to complete at a cost of just over £15 million, equivalent to about £1.65 billion in 2011, and measures thirty-six miles in length, from the Mersey Estuary at Eastham on the Wirral to Manchester.
I've not been able to determine what year they were granted their coat of arms, but what's interesting about it is that bees are featured in two location, because it combines elements of the arms of Manchester, Salford and Warrington, as can be seen below.

Designed for the Co-operative Insurance Society (CIS) by architects Gordon Tait and G. S. Hay, the building was completed in 1962 and rises to 118 m (387 feet) in height. As of 2022, the Grade II listed building is Manchester's 10th-tallest building and the second-tallest office building in the United Kingdom outside London after City Tower. The tower remained as built for over 40 years, until maintenance issues on the service tower required an extensive renovation, which included covering its façade in photovoltaic panels.
The tower is situated on Miller Street, which forms the Manchester Inner Ring Road, and stands adjacent to New Century House, a high-rise office building also designed by Gordon Tait and G. S. Hay and constructed concurrently for the CIS's parent company, the Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS)
The office tower building rises above a five-storey podium block. Each of the podium floors is 75 m × 55 m (246 ft × 180 ft), providing 4,125 m2 (44,400 sq ft) floor space per storey. Each office floor in the tower is 18 m × 44 m (59 ft × 144 ft), creating 727 m2 (7,830 sq ft) floor space per storey. The tower element consists of the steel-framed main office building and a windowless reinforced concrete service tower. The service tower rises higher than the main office block and houses lifts and stairwells.
The building has a symmetrical plan, with the main tower rising up from the north-eastern end of the podium block and projecting at the front over the first two floors and the main entrance. The service tower is attached to the centre of the main tower's south-west side, forming a squat T-shape. In total, the building has 388,000 sq ft (36,000 m2) of floor area, with clear open spaces on the office floors.

The Town Hall closed in January 2018 so that work could begin on the Our Town Hall Project.
At the very heart of the city, Manchester's Grade 1 listed Town Hall is a much-loved landmark, where we gather at important times to honour and celebrate, to welcome visitors and to do business. It's where we host civic guests, international delegations, Mancunian weddings and special events. It's where we celebrate those who've been awarded the Freedom of the City.
But having opened in 1877 the building was showing its age, so we started a major update to this architectural masterpiece to protect and improve it for Manchester and the nation, and lovingly restore it. See the Project Introduction page for more background, including our original film.

The cost, £20,000, was paid for in advance by 400 members who bought £50 shares and paid £30 each to buy the site. The semi-circular north façade had fluted Doric columns. The exchange room where business was conducted covered 812 square yards. The ground floor also contained the members' library with more than 15,000 books. The basement housed a newsroom lit by a dome and plate-glass windows, its ceiling was supported by a circle of Ionic pillars spaced 15 feet from the walls. The first-floor dining-room was accessed by a geometrical staircase. The exchange opened to celebrate of the birthday of George III in 1809. It also contained other anterooms and offices.
As the cotton trade continued to expand, larger premises were required and its extension was completed in 1849. The Exchange was run by a committee of notable Manchester industrialists. From 1855 to 1860 the committee was chaired by Edmund Buckley.
The second exchange was replaced by a third designed by Mills & Murgatroyd, constructed between 1867 and 1874. It was extended and modified by Bradshaw Gass & Hope between 1914 and 1931 to form the largest trading hall in England. The trading hall had three domes and was double the size of the current hall. The colonnade parallel to Cross Street marked its centre. On trading days merchants and brokers struck deals which supported the jobs of tens of thousands of textile workers in Manchester and the surrounding towns. Manchester's cotton dealers and manufacturers trading from the Royal Exchange earned the city the name, Cottonopolis

It started in Greater Manchester in 1989 and opened in London in 1996, and expanded to Newcastle in 2013, Newcastle upon Tyne and Bristol.
History
The charity is named after Albert Kennedy (31 January 1973 30 April 1989), a 16-year-old Social Services care leaver from Manchester who was gay. Kennedy died after falling from the top of Chorlton Street multi-storey car park. Despite an inquest the circumstances of his death remain unclear. The official version is that he died from misadventure.
Kennedy had experienced a great deal of homophobia during his life. Manchester's gay community was moved into action by the Trust's founder patron Cath Hall. Cath Hall was a straight foster carer who saw the need for an organisation to be set up to support young lesbian, gay, bi and trans people who were facing homelessness because of rejection at home. She had observed that Kennedy's case was not isolated, and that many other LGBTQ+ young people in and out of the foster care system were struggling with the effects of homophobia. Hall described the founding of the trust as an emotional response, an angry response, to what was going on.
As a result, the Albert Kennedy Trust was formed, officially becoming a Trust in 1990.
In 2019 the Albert Kennedy Trust rebranded as akt.

Mermaids was founded in 1995 by a group of parents of gender nonconforming children, originally acting as a small helpline. It aims to provide support for transgender youths up to 20 years of age. Mermaids became a Charitable incorporated organisation in 2015.
Susie Green was the chief executive from January 2016 until 25 November 2022 when she resigned. Previously she worked as an IT manager at the Citizens Advice Bureau in Leeds. Green was a trustee of Mermaids for four years from 2011. Her daughter is one of the youngest individuals in the UK to have transitioned surgically.
Lauren Stoner is interim chief executive since December 2022.

It was the site of the Roman era fort of Mamucium or Mancunium which gave its name to Manchester. It was the terminus of the Bridgewater Canal, the world's first industrial canal built in 1764, with the oldest canal warehouse opening in 1779. The world's first passenger railway terminated here in 1830, at Liverpool Road railway station and the first railway warehouse opened here in 1831.

J. & N. Philips and Company was a business established in 1747 by members of the Philips family, and which ceased trading in 1970. Originally based in Tean, Staffordshire, England, the business was a manufacturer of textile products that expanded both by organic growth and by taking over other businesses involved in the manufacture and merchanting of textile products and smallware.
It formed a part of a network of companies operated by the family, whose business interests came to include manufacture of hats and textiles such as linen smallwares, silks and fustians, as well as cotton spinning and dealing, power loom weaving, export merchanting and general warehousing. The family was also involved in politics, with George Philips, Mark Philips and Robert Needham Philips all being Members of Parliament and all promoting the ideals of Manchesterism while in office. George's son, George Richard Philips, was also a member of the House of Commons.

The colourful and cracked pieces feature the likes of Eric Cantona, Colin Bell, Karl Marx, Morrissey, Ian Brown, Emmeline Pankhurst, Bet Lynch and many other 'legends' associated with Manchester.
In total Kennedy has spent almost 20 years crafting the two sets of mosaics amongst other on-going work. The theme on Affleck's is Manchester heroes, with a nod given the shopping bazaar's rock'n'roll past. Thus among the great figures of Manchester depicted there are musicians, actors, media and radical politicians.
He also couldn't help including something from his own Manchester memories of Tib Street.
When I was a little kid I used to go to Tib Street all the time to get my ferrets and buy mice from a little pet shop and that's where we all used to go. Next door was Tib Street Joke Shop that used to sell masks and stink bombs so there's one piece that represents all that.
You have to have a closer look at some of the new mosaics to fully appreciate them with some of them holding a few hidden surprises. Kennedy's take on Joy Division's classic Unknown Pleasures album cover features several tiny coloured tile fragments to set it apart from the now iconic original.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4656685501 - 'Here is a reader in The John Rylands Library, a Victorian Gothic building on Deansgate in Manchester and part of Manchester University. The library is a grand historical place to study with the smell of books all around. There are many collections here, but you will be as welcome if you bring in Martin Amis or Dan Brown.
The foundations of the Library's collections were the Althorp Library of Lord Spencer (yes that one!), acquired in 1892 and a part of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana purchased from James Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford in 1901. The Bibliotheca Lindesiana was one of the most impressive private collections in Britain at the time, both for its size and for the rarity of some of the materials it contained. The manuscript collections (including Chinese and Japanese printed books) were sold in 1901 to Mrs. Rylands for the John Rylands Library.
The collections include exquisite medieval illuminated manuscripts, examples of the earliest forms of European printing including the Gutenberg Bible, as well as the personal papers of distinguished historical figures including Elizabeth Gaskell, John Dalton and John Wesley. The library also houses the papyrus fragments known as the Rylands Papyri and documents from North Africa. The most notable of these are the so-called St John Fragment, believed to be the oldest extant New Testament document., Rylands Library Papyrus P52, the earliest fragment of the canonical Gospel of John text and Papyrus Rylands 463, a manuscript fragment of the apocryphal Gospel of Mary. The collection of incunabula numbers about 4,500.
In a nod to Irene Royal and Ann Brown, librarians I see very infrequently, there have been many important staff associated with the collection.
Librarians at John Rylands before its merger include Edward Gordon Duff in 1899 and 1900 and Henry Guppy between 1899 and 1948 (joint Librarian with Duff until 1900). Duff was responsible for the original library catalogue, compiled between 1893 and 1899: Catalogue of the Printed Books and Manuscripts in the John Rylands Library, Manchester

Dr Guppy began publication of the Bulletin of the John Rylands Library in 1903

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5776599387 - 'Just along from Manchester Chinatowns expansive arch in Faulkner St lies The New hong Kong Cantonese. Its been a landmark in town for many decades and it was one of the first city centre places I ate in. The first chinese I ate in was the Tak Fook in Reddish (Hyde Rd end). A cracker of an understated place, which did a unique 9 course banquette. I must get back to it one day!
The establishment is one of the original Chinese restaurants around which modern Chinatown in Manchester has grown. It began life almost thirty years ago as the plain 'Hong Kong' restaurant, establishing the link with Hong Kong by being one of the first Chinese restaurants in Manchester city centre to serve authentic Cantonese cuisine. Since then the restaurant has been extensively modified and upgraded and so re-named The New Hong Kong.
Manchester's first Chinese restaurant, Ping Hong, opened in the area in 1948, on the eve of a Chinese immigration wave that would commence during the 1950s. Manchester, being neither a port city nor a capital city, such as Liverpool and London, respectively, did not have a significant Chinese population, reaching only about 2000.
However, after World War II, there were severe labour shortages, and in response, the government passed the British Nationality Act 1948, which allowed easier access into the country. Additionally, Hong Kong's rapid urbanisation meant that many farmers and traditional residents' homes were being destroyed by the urban sprawl, so many decided to migrate.
The area's beginnings are rooted in the restaurant business, as many Chinese restaurants surfaced soon after the immigration boom. By the 1970s other Chinese businesses began to emerge, such as medicine shops, Chinese supermarkets, as well as financial and legal services, all serving the employees of the expanding number of Chinese restaurants in the area. There was even a Hong Kong government office and a branch of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation during the 1970s
