Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3F12EAH - Johnny Marr performs at Castlefield Bowl in Manchester on Thursday 9 July 2026, headlining a Sounds of the City concert with support from Everything Everything and The Clockworks. The Manchester-born musician, songwriter and former guitarist of The Smiths is pictured in a close, front-facing performance portrait, singing into a microphone while playing a black and silver Fender Jaguar electric guitar. He wears a pale blue denim-style shirt with turned-back sleeves and a patterned guitar strap, contrasting with his concentrated expression.
Behind Marr, a large LED video screen fills the outdoor stage with a high-contrast monochrome image. Another band member appears partly silhouetted in the background, adding depth without distracting from the headliner. Stage equipment, microphone stands, guitar hardware and concert lighting reinforce the atmosphere of a major summer music event. The tight composition captures Marr's distinctive onstage presence, low-slung guitar stance and continuing association with Manchester's influential indie and alternative-rock tradition.
The Castlefield Bowl appearance was billed as Marr's biggest solo headline show to that point and formed part of the annual Sounds of the City series. The open-air amphitheatre, set among railway viaducts, canals, brickwork and modern city-centre buildings, is one of Manchester's most recognisable urban concert settings. The performance brought Marr back to his home city for a career-spanning set combining solo work, Electronic material and songs associated with The Smiths. The warm July evening, large audience and industrial surroundings gave the event the character of a major Manchester homecoming.
Everything Everything appeared as special guests, while Irish-formed indie-rock band The Clockworks opened the bill. The photograph documents a prominent British guitarist, singer and songwriter before a sold-out outdoor crowd during Manchester's 2026 summer concert season

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3F0W4MP - Will Crewdson performs his solo project Scant Regard live at Manchester Academy 2 on 23 May 2026, opening the evening for Dave Formula and Noko's full-band celebration of songs from Magazine's influential post-punk catalogue. Photographed tightly from the audience, the London-based guitarist, writer and producer is shown singing into a stage microphone while playing a distinctive metallic blue electric guitar. He wears a short-sleeved black shirt with a contrasting leopard-print panel, a chain necklace and a dark guitar strap, creating a strong visual match for the project's flamboyant, genre-crossing performance style.
Purple and deep-blue concert lighting dominates the background, while a yellow-green beam catches the performer's hair, arm and instrument. Crewdson's concentrated expression, direct position at the microphone and hand placement on the guitar convey the intensity and physical energy of a live club performance. Part of the drum kit is visible at the right edge, placing the portrait firmly within the stage environment without distracting from the musician.
Scant Regard is Crewdson's one-man, guitar-led solo identity, combining electronic rhythms with elements of punk, surf rock, rockabilly, industrial funk, dub and cinematic soundtrack music. Beyond this project, he is widely associated with guitar work for Adam Ant, The Selecter, Rachel Stamp, Flesh for Lulu, Gaye Bykers on Acid, Johnette Napolitano and She Made Me Do It. The Manchester date formed the final night of the May 2026 Dave Formula tour and took place inside the University of Manchester Students' Union building on Oxford Road. The image documents an established British alternative guitarist supporting musicians connected with Magazine, one of Manchester's defining post-punk groups, in an intimate university concert venue

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ENAP4R - Two bright yellow CALM mental health posters displayed in a pub gents toilet, using beer glass imagery and pub-friendly language to encourage men and friends to check in with one another. The left poster carries the headline Cheers to Checking In and says CALM and Stonegate have joined forces to celebrate getting together with mates, sharing good times and recognising when someone may be struggling. The right poster reads Help CALM be there for everyone whose glass feels half empty and explains that Campaign Against Living Miserably is a suicide prevention charity that supports anyone struggling to stay in the game for another day. The setting is important because the message appears in a male social space where some people may feel more able to notice a friend's low mood, loneliness, anxiety, depression, money worries or change in behaviour. The visible text, pint glass graphics, QR code and donation message make the image suitable for editorial use around suicide prevention, men's mental health, peer support, pub culture, charity awareness, hospitality venues, social connection and public health communication. Stonegate Group announced a two-year partnership with CALM in 2026, with CALM messaging appearing across pubs, bars and venues through in-venue signage and digital screens. The photograph can support stories about how charities reach people outside clinical settings, how informal conversations can reduce isolation, and how pubs can be used as community spaces for awareness campaigns. It also has relevance for workplace wellbeing, hospitality social responsibility, fundraising, mental health stigma, early intervention, support for mates, and the idea that asking a simple question in an everyday setting may help someone feel less alone. The image should be handled sensitively, avoiding sensational language, and framed around support, prevention, hope and practical human connection.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EENHYT - Spectators in a grandstand at Silverstone Circuit during Formula 1 British Grand Prix practice day, watching track action from blue seats beside the safety fencing, run-off area and open sky. The image shows the fan experience at one of the most famous motor racing venues in Britain, with spectators in casual clothing, people using phones, drinks in hand, marshals and trackside staff visible in the distance, and the wide Northamptonshire circuit landscape beyond the barrier. Silverstone is officially described as the home of the British Grand Prix and its grandstand ticketing promotes reserved seating across the Friday to Sunday race weekend, making this a useful photograph for editorial coverage of F1 spectators, practice sessions, motorsport tourism, race weekend build-up, grandstand views, sporting crowds and British summer events. The scene appears to be photographed in daylight under mixed cloud, with bright spells and a cool, changeable British weather feel typical of outdoor race meetings. The photograph works well for stories about Formula 1 fans, British Grand Prix attendance, Friday practice, motorsport culture, Silverstone facilities, circuit safety, spectator seating, high-speed sport, event management, travel to major venues and the economics of flagship UK sporting weekends. It also has value for travel, leisure and lifestyle uses showing a relaxed crowd waiting for or watching track activity before the higher-pressure qualifying and race sessions. The visible fencing, gravel run-off and trackside service area give strong context as a live racing circuit rather than a generic outdoor stadium. The composition captures the practical reality of a practice day, with fans spread through the stand, clouds gathering overhead and the atmosphere of anticipation before the main British Grand Prix race.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDYG - The Greenwich Foot Tunnel crosses beneath the River Thames in East London, linking Greenwich (Royal Borough of Greenwich) on the south bank with Millwall (London Borough of Tower Hamlets) on the north. Approximately 4,000 people use the tunnel each day. It opened in 1902.
The tunnel was designed by civil engineer Sir Alexander Binnie for London County Council and constructed by contractor John Cochrane & Co. The project started in June 1899 and the tunnel opened on 4 August 1902. The tunnel replaced an expensive and sometimes unreliable ferry service allowing workers living south of the Thames to reach their workplaces in the London docks and shipyards in or near the Isle of Dogs. Its creation owed much to the efforts of working-class politician Will Crooks, who had worked in the docks and, after chairing the LCC's Bridges Committee responsible for the tunnel, later served as Labour MP for Woolwich.
The section of the tunnel that was repaired following damage during World War II
The entrance shafts at both ends are beneath glazed domes. Lifts, installed in 1904, were upgraded in 1992 and again in 2012, and helical staircases allow pedestrians to access the tile-lined tunnel, which slopes gently from both sides down to a midway lowpoint beneath the river. The cast-iron tunnel is 1,215 feet (370.2 m) long, 50 feet (15.2 m) deep and has an internal diameter of about 9 feet (2.74 m). The cast-iron rings are coated with concrete and surfaced with some 200,000 white glazed tiles. The northern end was damaged by bombs during the Second World War and repairs included a thick steel and concrete inner lining that substantially reduces the diameter for a short distance. The northern shaft staircase has 87 steps
the southern one has 100.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JP8TA2 - Cub Scouts, often shortened to Cubs, are a section of Scouting operated by The Scout Association with a core age of eight to ten and a half years of age. This section follows on from the Beaver Scouts (6-8 year olds) and precedes the Scout section (10½-14 year olds).
Originally beginning in 1916 as Wolf Cubs, the section gained its current name in 1966 as a result of the Advance Party Report. Because of this early name, the section has themed links to wolves and the novel The Jungle Book with the section being called a Cub Pack and the volunteer leaders taking their names from this story.
Cub Scouts has been open to both boys and girls since 1991 as well as those of different faiths and none. Cub Scouts wear a green sweatshirt for their uniform and earn badges for skills learned and challenges overcome
In 2014, the Scouting for All strategic plan for the next four years was launched that included an increased focus of community impact, youth voice and inclusion in the programme and which emerged from youth feedback. Off the back of this, a refresh of the programme was scheduled for 2015 and in April 2014, the Scout Association released four new activity badges and one new staged activity badge which were to be added as part of the refresh

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPB8TX - As one of the few explicitly gender-separated spaces, the toilet has become a prominent site of conflict and a focal point for gender-critical' feminism. In this article we draw upon an AHRC-funded project, Around the Toilet, to reflect upon and critique trans-exclusionary and trans-hostile narratives of toilet spaces. Such narratives include ciscentric, heteronormative and gender essentialist positions within toilet research and activism which, for example, equate certain actions and bodily functions (such as menstruation) to a particular gender, decry the need for all-gender toilets, and cast suspicion upon the intentions of trans women in public toilet spaces. These include explicitly transmisogynist discourses perpetuated largely by those calling themselves gender-critical' feminists, but also extend to national media, right-wing populist discourses and beyond. We use Around the Toilet data to argue that access to safe and comfortable toilets plays a fundamental role in making trans lives possible. Furthermore, we contend that whether naive, ignorant or explicitly transphobic trans-exclusionary positions do little to improve toilet access for the majority, instead putting trans people, and others with visible markers of gender difference, at a greater risk of violence, and participating in the dangerous homogenisation of womanhood. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPB8MW - The sculpture is by John O'Connor, he studied at the Sculpture Academy in London for four years, before going on to teach sculpture, moulding and casting.
The piece is cast in bronze resin and is called Beyond Limitations. It was placed in the Lady Arbour Clouster Gardens in 2013. . On the picturesque estuary border between Essex and Suffolk there is a hidden artist's studio. It remains a secret to the general public but the studio receives commissions from across the globe. A true asset to the local community and the international art scene alike.
This secret is sculptor John O'Connor. He works prolifically in his studio at Manningtree, a world away from the hustle and bustle of any art capital. He has as much talent and focus as any artist you would expect to find working in a major city and has been producing figurative contemporary sculpture for the last 18 years.
John's work has become increasingly popular and much sought after, in fact, business is booming. Amidst the glamour of celebrities and the household names of the garden design world, John was once again exhibiting his art works at the recent RHS Chelsea Flower Show. He was delighted to have again been working in collaboration with award winning garden designer James Basson. This year Basson designed the M&G show garden.
This summer he exhibited at two other RHS shows, Chatsworth House (June 711), and Hampton Court Flower Show (July 39).
Collaborating with John on the RHS shows will be various local companies including Dedham Vale Vineyards who will be sponsoring the private view with their delicious sparkling English Brut, and Essex based stonemasons, Wood For Stone, who will be providing the stone for this years exhibit. This years planting will also be provided by the Oxford based Water Perry Gardens. John also has various other prominent shows planned for this year.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2C59GFM - HM Prison Thorn Cross is a Category D Adult Male Institution for males aged 21+. The prison is located in the village of Appleton Thorn (near Warrington) in Cheshire, England. Thorn Cross is operated by Her Majesty's Prison Service.
Thorn Cross Prison opened in 1985, on the site of the former RNAS Stretton (HMS Blackcap) airfield. Thorn Cross was initially used as an open prison for adult males. In 1996, the prison was re-rolled as a Young Offenders Institution. At the time, Thorn Cross was the first such institution in the United Kingdom to enforce military-style disciplinary regime for some of its inmates, which led to a part of the prison (unit 5) being labelled a boot camp.
In January 1999, an inspection report from Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons labelled Thorn Cross Prison as an inspirational example of good practice. In particular the report praised the prison's High Intensity Training (HIT) project, and recommended it be rolled out to other prisons.
In October 2005, a further inspection report highly praised Thorn Cross Prison, again highlighting the prisons HIT program. The report also noted that Thorn Cross managed to reduce re-offending amongst its ex-inmates to just over 20 per cent, one of the best rates in the country. The report added that the prison had to do more to improve relations with the local community however.
Present day
HM Prison Thorn Cross is a Category D Adult Male Institution for males aged 21+. Accommodation consists of single rooms, each prisoner having his own room key.
Education and training courses offered at the prison include Construction Crafts, Motor Vehicles, Horticulture, Hospitality and Catering and Rail Construction (NVQ Level 2). Thorn Cross has a number of partnerships with national and local employers, offering opportunities for work placements prior to and on release.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MCGAW9 - William Temple was born the son of the Leicestershire man Anthony Temple, whose family name was said to descend from the Knight Templars, a once powerful monastic order during the Crusades, but which was outlawed by Pope Clement V. The rituals and the secrets of the order survived and many of the Knight Templars families came to prominence in 16th-century England when Protestantism was embraced. He was educated at Eton College and passed with a scholarship to King's College, Cambridge, in 1573. In 1576 he was elected a fellow of King's, and graduated with a B.A. in 15778 and M.A. in philosophy in 1581. He became Master of Lincoln Grammar School that same year. Though originally destined for the law, he became a tutor in logic at his college. In his logic readings, wrote a pupil, Anthony Wotton, in his Runne from Rome (1624), he always laboured to fit his pupils for the true use of that art rather than for vain and idle speculations. He accepted with enthusiasm the logical methods and views of Petrus Ramus, and became the most active champion of the Ramists in England.
William Temple's first sight of Ireland came as he landed at Howth in April 1599 to take up his position as secretary to the new lord lieutenant, Robert Devereux, and 2nd Earl of Essex. It was a baptism of fire as their first great task was to suppress a major rebellion of the native Irish tribes who had now united with the Anglo-Normans. While Essex campaigned around the country, Temple stayed behind in Dublin that summer relaying news of military deployment and successes to the Royal Court, Essex, once Elizabeth's most trusted confidant and intimate advisor, now became the unappreciated and maligned viceroy falling foul of the ageing queen. Both he and William Temple were ignominiously recalled to London that same autumn.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGY0 - Iconic clothing chain Stolen from Ivor's last shop has been saved - thanks to the M.E.N.
Founder Ivor Hazan, 67, opened his first boutique on the King Street West in Manchester city stock-photo/gotonysmith-Centre.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>centre in 1965 and his 40 stores became a Mecca for fashion hipsters across the region.
He announced last month he was to shut the doors on his last remaining shop in Stockport, which opened in 1974, due to declining sales.
However after the story was featured in the pages of the M.E.N and on our website, the brand has undergone a revival.
Ivor says he has been inundated with people coming into the shop and sharing their stories of the off-the-wall clobber they bought from him in their youth.
One man even broke down in tears whilst other wanted to buy his distinctive yellow carrier bags and sell them online.
And after seeing a spike in sales Ivor says he will keep the shop open - for now at least.
His first store opened at the height of the swinging' Sixties.
It was close to a boutique owned by United hero George Best and he had a gentleman's agreement that he would not sell suits if the United ace didn't sell jeans.
In 1966 it became the first store in the north of England to stock Levis jeans, which then cost £2.37 a pair.
The brand grew and at its peak it had 43 stores across the north west, including Stockport, Altrincham, Bolton and Bury.
However all but seven of them were forced to close in 2002 after the company went into administration.
And Ivor said stores such as Primark were killing' independent stores like his.
But due to the phenomenal response after we featured their plight he has shelved plans to take his operation solely online and he will keep the doors open of the shop on Prince's Street in Stockport town centre.
The Didsbury entrepreneur said: It's just been absolutely amazing.
Since the M.E.N ran our story we've had so many people coming in and telling us about things they bought 20 years ago.
Telling us that their mums used to bring them as kids.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RFF5W4 - Canal Street, the centre of the Manchester Gay Village, is a street in Manchester city centre in North West England. The pedestrianised street, which runs along the west side of the Rochdale Canal, is lined with gay bars and restaurants. At night time, and in daytime in the warmer months, the street is filled with visitors, often including gay and lesbian tourists from all over the world. The northern end of the street meets Minshull Street and the southern meets Princess Street
part of the street looks across the Rochdale Canal into Sackville Park.
90's Focus led to several of the pubs on or near Canal Street acquiring a predominantly gay clientele. In 1991, Manto (Manchester Tomorrow) bar opened at no. 46. It was built in 1989 by Benedict Smith Architects. Unlike the other gay bars at that time, Manto had large glass windows, allowing the casual passer-by to view what was going on inside. Previously, many establishments catering for the gay community were often keen to conceal activities from the general public, but the architectural design of Manto was seen as a queer visual statement of we're here, we're queer get used to it, and a brick-and-mortar refusal to hide any more, or to remain underground and invisible.
Over the next decade, more numerous and larger bars opened along the canal side, turning Canal Street into the centre of the most successful gay village in Europe. Because of this, the Canal Street street signs are regularly defaced to read Anal Treet or Anal Street. The success was further enhanced by the use of Canal Street and its bars in several television series, including Bob and Rose and Queer as Folk, both written by Russell T Davies.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBF06B - The Beastie Boys were an American hip hop group from New York City formed in 1981. The group comprised Michael Mike D Diamond (vocals, drums), Adam MCA Yauch (vocals, bass) and Adam Ad-Rock Horovitz (vocals, guitar).
The Beastie Boys were formed as a four-piece hardcore punk band, the Young Aborigines, in 1979 by Mike D (vocals), MCA (bass), John Berry (guitar) and Kate Schellenbach (drums). They appeared on the compilation cassette New York Thrash, contributing two songs from their first EP, Polly Wog Stew, in 1982. Berry left shortly thereafter and was replaced by Horovitz. After achieving local success with the 1983 experimental hip hop single Cooky Puss, the Beastie Boys made a full transition to hip hop, and Schellenbach left the group soon after. They toured with Madonna in 1985 and a year later released their debut album Licensed to Ill. It was followed by Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication, Hello Nasty, To the 5 Boroughs, The Mix-Up, and Hot Sauce Committee Part Two.
The Beastie Boys have sold 26 million records in the United States and 50 million records worldwide, making them the biggest-selling rap group since Billboard began recording sales in 1991. With seven platinum-selling albums from 1986 to 2004,[4] the Beastie Boys were one of the longest-lived hip hop acts worldwide. In 2012, they became the third rap group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In the same year, MCA died of cancer. In 2014, Mike D confirmed that Beastie Boys had disbanded.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7N8HC - Two male tourists or festival visitors pose in matching blue checked shirts, black alpine hats, embroidered leather lederhosen and braces while holding bottled beer in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. The image captures a light-hearted street scene associated with Oktoberfest culture, Bavarian dress and beer tourism, with city centre buildings, traffic signage, pedestrians and an urban festival atmosphere visible in the background. The men are dressed in a popular version of Tracht, the traditional costume style strongly associated with Munich's Oktoberfest, where lederhosen and dirndl clothing are widely worn by visitors as well as locals. Their clothing, smiles, beer bottles and informal pose make the photograph commercially useful for editorial features on travel, tourism, German culture, Oktoberfest breaks, stag weekends, city festivals, beer drinking, hospitality, European holidays, group travel and themed fancy dress. It can also illustrate broader stories about alcohol, leisure, party tourism, cultural identity, festival fashion, Bavarian tradition, Munich city breaks, visitor economy, event crowds, hospitality businesses, beer brands, public transport and celebrations in continental Europe. Oktoberfest is held on the Theresienwiese in Munich's Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt district, a large central festival ground known locally as the Wiesn. The official Munich Oktoberfest site describes the festival as taking place on the Theresienwiese, and notes that traditional Bavarian clothing, including lederhosen, is a visible part of the event. The image appears to have been taken in bright daylight with dry weather and strong sun, judging from the shadows, sunglasses and clear outdoor setting. Although the exact street location is not confirmed from the image alone, the subject matter fits Munich Oktoberfest visitor culture, combining casual tourism, traditional Bavarian costume, beer, humour and the dressing-up element of the modern festival experience.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy E6JB5K - The relaxed attitude to suitable bike riding attire this most compelling of spectator sports has a serious agenda: it's a protest against oil dependency and the way the cult of the car dominates contemporary life.
It's also an unfettered celebration of individuality of the human body. Many of the 1000 plus people expected to turn out will opt to bike in the buff. And if you too long to through caution and clothes to the wind, but feel a bit bashful, you can always take something along that's easy to put on when the procession gets held up by traffic, as it inevitably will.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED35F - The sporran (/ˈspɒrən/
Scottish Gaelic for purse), a traditional part of male Scottish Highland dress, is a pouch that performs the same function as pockets on the pocketless kilt. Made of leather or fur, the ornamentation of the sporran is chosen to complement the formality of dress worn with it. The sporran is worn on a leather strap or chain, conventionally positioned in front of the groin of the wearer.
Since the traditional kilt does not have pockets, the sporran serves as a wallet and container for any other necessary personal items. It is essentially a survival of the common European medieval belt-pouch, superseded elsewhere as clothing came to have pockets, but continuing in the Scottish Highlands because of the lack of these accessories in traditional dress. The sporran hangs below the belt buckle
and much effort is made to match their style and design. The kilt belt buckle can be very ornate, and contain similar motifs to the sporran cantle and the Sgian Dubh. Early sporrans would have been worn suspended from the belt on one or other of the hips, rather than hung from a separate strap in front of the wearer.
When driving a car, dancing, playing drums, or engaging in any activity where a heavy pouch might encumber the wearer, the sporran can be turned around the waist to let it hang on the hip in a more casual position

Arigato August, always a mad busy crazy time in Edinburgh, during the festival and fringe, which seems to have grown even bigger than the tattoo and festival. There's no shortage of scaryness and satire here!.
Aki is a Japanese street performer from Tokyo, just in Edinburgh to perform in the street. He was a friendly chap and was having a brilliant time.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the world's largest arts festival, with the 2012 event spanning 25 days totalling over 2,695 shows from 47 countries in 279 venues. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place annually in Scotland's capital, in the month of August. The Fringe is a showcase for the performing arts, particularly theatre and comedy (which has seen substantial growth in recent years), although dance and music are also represented. In 2012, 36% of shows were comedy and 28% theatrical productions. Theatrical productions range from the classics of ancient Greece to William Shakespeare, Samuel Beckett and contemporary works. In 2012, 1,418 shows were having their world premiere.
The Fringe is an unjuried festival – with no selection committee, and therefore any type of performance may participate. The Fringe has often showcased experimental works that might not be invited to a more conservative arts festival. In addition to ticketed, programmed events, the Festival has included a street fair, located primarily on the Royal Mile. The Festival is organized by the Festival Fringe Society, which publishes the programme, sells tickets, and offers advice to performers. Their offices are on the Royal Mile.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RGKET6 - Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in the Scarborough borough of North Yorkshire, England. Situated on the east coast of Yorkshire at the mouth of the River Esk, Whitby has a maritime, mineral and tourist heritage. Its East Cliff is home to the ruins of Whitby Abbey, where Cædmon, the earliest recognised English poet, lived. The fishing port emerged during the Middle Ages, supporting important herring and whaling fleets, and was where Captain Cook learned seamanship. Tourism started in Whitby during the Georgian period and developed with the arrival of the railway in 1839. Its attraction as a tourist destination is enhanced by the proximity of the high ground of the North York Moors national park and the heritage coastline and by association with the horror novel Dracula. Jet and alum were mined locally, and Whitby Jet, which was mined by the Romans and Victorians, became fashionable during the 19th century.

'Rome Wasn't Built in a Day' is a song by an English group Morcheeba released in 2000 as the first single off their third studio album Fragments of Freedom. The song is the group's biggest hit in the United Kingdom, where it peaked at number 34 in 2000. The song reached number two in New Zealand.
At some point in the mid-1990s, the Godfrey brothers (DJ Paul Godfrey and multi-instrumentalist Ross Godfrey) recruited Skye Edwards as vocalist, during a chance meeting at a party in which both brothers were introduced to Edwards. This led to the formation of Morcheeba.
The band's debut album, Who Can You Trust? was released on China Records in April 1996 and fitted smoothly into the then-modish trip hop genre, with instrumentation based predominantly around Rhodes piano, electric guitar and DJ scratching, with the songs carried by Edwards' relaxed soul-styled vocals.
The follow-up, 1998's Big Calm, moved slightly away from trip-hop towards a more pop-oriented, song-based sound. This was exemplified by the band's remaking of 'Moog Island' (a song from the previous album) in a more summery, upbeat style, with the new title of 'The Music That We Hear'. One of the album's singles, 'The Sea', became a hit and a radio favourite. The album proved to be a big seller and ensured Morcheeba's success as a breakthrough act.
In 1998, Morcheeba collaborated with Hubert Laws to record for the Red Hot Organization's compilation album Red Hot + Rhapsody, a tribute to George Gershwin, which raised money for various charities devoted to increasing AIDS awareness and fighting the disease.
In 2000, Morcheeba released their third album, Fragments of Freedom. This repeated the sales success of Big Calm but received a less positive critical response. The band's fourth album, Charango, was released in 2002, and spawned several singles including 'Otherwise,' 'Way Beyond,' and 'Undress Me Now'. In an indication of what would follow, several tracks on the album did not feature Edwards, and were instead written with and sung by Lambchop's Kurt Wagner or by emcees Pace Won and Slick Rick.
Rome wasn't built in a day is a way of saying 'It takes a long time to create something complicated or impressive'. No-one can argue with the impressiveness of Rome or how complicated it can be to cross the road in town. Its one of my favourite cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BNKK50 - East Lancashire Railway is a 12.5-mile (20 km) heritage railway line in North West England which runs between Heywood, Greater Manchester and Rawtenstall in Lancashire. There are intermediate stations at Bury Bolton Street, Burrs Country Park, Summerseat and Ramsbottom, with the line crossing the border into Rossendale serving Irwell Vale and Rawtenstall. Before closure, the line terminated at Bacup.
The heritage line is now just over 12 miles (19 km) long and has a mainline connection with the national railway network at Castleton, just beyond Heywood. The ELR is planning to extend the running line to Castleton in the future.
Overview
Passenger services between Bury and Rawtenstall were withdrawn by British Rail on 3 June 1972. Coal services to Rawtenstall ended in 1980 and formal closure of the line followed in 1982. The East Lancashire Railway Trust reopened the line on 25 July 1987. The initial service operated between Bury and Ramsbottom, via Summerseat. In 1991, the service was extended northwards from Ramsbottom to reach Rawtenstall, via Irwell Vale. However, two original stations on the line, closed to passengers by BR in 1972, have not reopened, Ewood Bridge & Edenfield and Stubbins. The latter was the junction of the lines to Accrington and Rossendale although there were no platforms serving these lines.

The old style greasy spoon and working mans cafe is under threat. As our town centres and working (wo)men are being decimated, this old institution is disapearing.
Classic formica tables, breakfast for £2, posters to take you to far away places while you mop up your beans with a potato cake. Priceless!
The typical greasy spoon serves mainly fried or grilled food from a more or less invariable repertoire: bacon, sausages, fried eggs, fried or tinned tomatoes, fried mushrooms, baked beans, chips, and sometimes black or white pudding, bubble and squeak (a fried mixture of cabbage and mashed potato), and fried bread.
These are served in a variety of combinations and usually it is possibly to order any combination. This part of the menu is generally referred to as breakfast even if it is available all day. Real greasy spoons do not have a continental coffee machine capable of capuchino, so dont embarass yourself by asking. Expect coffee to be instant, teabags rule here.
Who knows, the less than rigourous attitude to hygiene and dishwashing may well one day be proved to be good for us. Well its natural to be exposed to a few germs n'est pas?

You probably like me receive recommendations from Amazon and the like, introducing me to things to buy similar to the things I already have purchased. The effect of this is that we are recommended to listen to, watch or read more of the same.
In a library it is easy to walk in for a book on the Great Western Railway and walk out with a biography and a gluten free cook book as well, via the checkout desk (now fully computerised) of course.
I dont know if this man had been looking for this book, but his body language, holding this book at arms length revealed something extra. It is a racy title.
How did a 19 year-old, middle-class, Catholic girl from Munich become Hitler's mistress and what kept him faithful until the end of their lives? Was her appeal sexual, domestic, political - or did he really love her? Eva Anna Paula Hitler née Braun (6 February 1912 – 30 April 1945) was the longtime companion of Adolf Hitler and for less than 40 hours, his wife.
Braun met Hitler in Munich when she was 17 years old while working as an assistant and model for his personal photographer and began seeing him often about two years later. By 1936 she was a part of his household at the Berghof near Berchtesgaden and by all accounts lived a materially luxurious and sheltered life throughout World War II.
She was quite racy by all accounts and enjoyed make-up and nude sunbathing.
As the Third Reich collapsed towards the end of the war, Braun swore her loyalty to Hitler and went to Berlin to be by his side in the heavily reinforced Führerbunker beneath the Reich Chancellery. As Red Army troops fought their way into the neighbourhood on 29 April 1945, she married Hitler during a brief civil ceremony: she was 33 and he 56. Less than 40 hours later they committed suicide together in a sitting room of the bunker, she by biting into a capsule of cyanide.
Strangely, the German public was wholly unaware of Braun until after her death. You would need several super injunctions these days to manage that!

Although they are as old as Auld Reekie herself, the current name dates from only just over 30 years ago.
They were renamed Playfair Steps by then Rt Hon Lord Provest, Kenneth W Borthwick on 21st April 1978. He held that post from 1977.
They were originally, The Mound Steps 1853/1972, then John Knox Way 1972/78 before Playfair steps 78 onwards. Thanks to Nicola for helping me with the history.
He was undoubtedly one of the greatest Scottish architects of the 19th century, designer of many of Edinburgh's neo-classical landmarks in the New Town.
Two of his finest works are the neo-classical buildings of the National Gallery of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy which are situated in the centre of Edinburgh, to the left of these steps. The Playfair Project completed in 2004 joined the two historic buildings with an underground link.
He was greatly inspired by a trip to Athens.
Playfair died in Edinburgh on 19 March 1857, and is buried in Edinburgh's Dean Cemetery, where he designed a number of monuments for others, including Lord Jeffrey.
This is an infrared shot taken with a 720nm adapted SLR. It is more convenient to use than using a Hoya R72 for IR. This spring day was heavy in infrared.
Hopefully this will be a distraction for everyone hooked today on the Kate (Catherine) Middleton and Prince William royal wedding at Westminster Abbey. In different times it might have taken place in Edinburgh and there may have been several monarchs, kings &
queens in what is now the UK. Just some food for thought. Enjoy your day if you are watching it on TV or just spending the morning buying some 3x2 at Homebase.

'Street Life' is the opening track of Roxy Music's third album Stranded, their first album with Eddie Jobson. He replaced the mighty Brian Eno. It was released as a single in the UK in November 1973 and reached number 9 on the charts.
Def Leppard covered 'Street Life' on their album Yeah!. Morrissey also performed the song during some European festival dates during his 2006 tour.
There are quite a few good Roxy compilations around. Check one out to hear more from this excellent band.

I met this chap in Leeds, just outside the city centre. He struck up a conversation while wheeling along his bike. He was very well spoken and told me he slept under the M261, which scoops around the town. Its pretty dry under there, but will be bitterly cold as a chill wind blows through.
I left him the change in my pocket, it was too late to go and buy him something to eat, which I would have preferred. I notice often that beggers are getting fussy. They prefer unopened sandwiches that can be sold on etc.

Well its taken 90 shots before an excuse for a Primal Scream track.
Primal Scream date from 1982 back in Glasgow, Scotland. The band performed throughout 1982-1984, but their career did not take off until Bobby Gillespie left his position as drummer of The Jesus and Mary Chain. The band were a key part of the mid-1980s indie pop scene, but eventually moved away from their more jangly sound, taking on more psychedelic and then garage rock influences, before incorporating a dance music element to their sound.
The 1991 somewhat Acidhouse inspired album Screamadelica was the one that broke the band into the mainstream. It won the first Mercury Music Prize in 1992. Its best heard in its 2 x LP vinyl incarnation.
Bobby's school friend was Alan McGee, who took Gillespie to his first gig, a Thin Lizzy concert. McGee and Gillespie were heavily influenced by punk rock, and they joined a local punk band, The Drains, in 1978. McGee soon moved south to London, Gillespie staying in SE Glasgow.
The band still tour and I have some shots from w=33062170@N08&
m=tags\' target=\'_blank\'>Manchester December 2008.
Screamadelica (go for the 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) is an excellent starting point to get to know the band. Alternatively checkout the Dirty Hits compilation.

Perhaps prison is not the place to have a strong sex drive. Sex can be a terror. There could also me many straight / gay / homosexual predators wanting others. The lonely sometimes stray from their norm and be curious. Other times it may be for favours. More tabs, blow or less pain.
Pornography probably does not help either, maybe it makes it worse. Members of staff do have sex with inmates, some looking to be seduced, some seducing. Where a guard rapes or assaults a prisoner, the guard generally goes free and the prisoner is prosecuted as a pervert.
Tattoos can have special meanings in prison. A convicts skin canvass can say a lot about him and his history. Some are:
Clocks without hands - Doing Time
Eight Balls - Unlucky, IE behind the 8 ball
One laughing face, one crying face - Play now, pay later
Face of female crying - Someone outside waiting

Well, the Sugababes, what is there not to like? In 2006, British Hit Singles &
Albums named the Sugababes as the most successful female act of the 21st century with six UK number one singles and eighteen UK top ten hits.
Their number one singles include such songs as 'Freak Like Me', 'Round Round', 'Hole in the Head', 'Push the Button' and 'About You Now'. They have also accumulated five UK top ten albums (four of which have gained at least platinum certification), including chart-toppers Taller in More Ways and Change. The Sugababes have been nominated for six Brit Awards, winning one for Best British Dance Act in 2003.
The second lineup was my favourite. Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and former Atomic Kitten member Heidi Range.
Having already started work on a second album with new member Range, the trio looked for a new record label, eventually signing to Island Records. Their first single on the new label, 'Freak like Me' scored the group their first UK number 1 single. Follow-up single 'Round Round' also debuted on top of the UK Singles Chart and peaked at number 2 in Ireland, the Netherlands and New Zealand. Both singles were certified silver by the BPI.
On the back of the success of the singles, the group's second album, Angels with Dirty Faces, debuted at number 2 on the UK Albums Chart and was later certified triple platinum, selling almost a million copies in the UK alone. It is to date their highest-selling album. In the UK, the third single from the album, a ballad entitled 'Stronger', gained the girls their third consecutive top ten hit in their native country. The track was released as a double-A side with 'Angels with Dirty Faces' in the UK, the latter song chosen as the theme tune to The Powerpuff Girls Movie. A fourth single, the Sting-sampling 'Shape', made the top ten in the Netherlands and Ireland in early 2003.
Tattooing has been practiced for centuries in many cultures spread throughout the world. The Ainu, the indigenous people of Japan, traditionally had facial tattoos. Today one can find Berbers of Tamazgha (North Africa), Māori of New Zealand, Hausa people of Northern Nigeria, Arabic people in East-Turkey and Atayal of Taiwan with facial tattoos.
In Japan, tattoos are strongly associated with organized crime organizations known as the yakuza, particularly full body tattoos done the traditional Japanese way (Tebori). Many public Japanese bathhouses (sentō) and gymnasiums often openly ban those bearing large or graphic tattoos in an attempt to prevent Yakuza from entering. The Government of Meiji Japan had outlawed tattoos in the 19th century, a prohibition that stood for 70 years before being repealed in 1948.
In the United States many prisoners and criminal gangs use distinctive tattoos to indicate facts about their criminal behavior, prison sentences, and organizational affiliation. A tear tattoo, for example, can be symbolic of murder, with each tear representing the death of a friend. At the same time, members of the U.S. military have an equally well established and longstanding history of tattooing to indicate military units, battles, kills, etc., an association which remains widespread among older Americans. Tattooing is also common in the British Armed Forces.
Tattooing was also used by the Nazi regime in Nazi concentration camps to tag prisoners.
Insofar as this cultural or subcultural use of tattoos predates the widespread popularity of tattoos in the general population, tattoos are still associated with criminality. Tatoos on the face in the shape of teardrops are usually associated with how many people a person has murdered. Although the general acceptance of tattoos is on the rise in Western society, they still carry a heavy stigma among certain social groups. Tattoos are generally considered an important part of the culture of the Russian mafia.
The prevalence of women in the tattoo industry, along with larger numbers of women bearing tattoos, appears to be changing negative perceptions. A study of 'at-risk' (as defined by school absenteeism and truancy) adolescent girls showed a positive correlation between body-modification and negative feelings towards the body and self-esteem
however, also illustrating a strong motive for body-modification as the search for 'self and attempts to attain mastery and control over the body in an age of increasing alienation.
Conspicuous tattoos and other body modification can make gainful employment difficult in many fields.

Black Mountain is a Canadian psychedelic rock-band composed of Stephen McBean, Amber Webber, Matt Camirand, Jeremy Schmidt and Joshua Wells. They have recently really grown on me, particularly this, one of the gentler tracks on the latest album Wilderness Heart.
By day, three members of the band work for Insite, an organization that meets the basic living requirements of the chronically poor, drug addicted and mentally ill in a part of Vancouver.
A BBC review described it thus: 'Black Mountain's third album represents the finest yield so far from the Vancouver band’s relentless harvesting of rock and folk's 70s heyday. Wilderness Heart refuses to dive into unfamiliar territory, instead expertly blending heavy rock, smoky blues and finger-picked acoustic guitars across an album of tantalisingly layered songs. Rather than adhering to type, Black Mountain now have a catalogue of songs that respect and rival their influences.'
I can only agree, having played the album to death now for about 7 weeks. Check it out, tell 'em I sent you :-)

Princess St in the city of Edinburgh can be a magnet for the homeless to pick up a few coins and the odd discarded half eaten sandwich, can of Tenants Super or BK whopper. Jenners is one of the top pitches. Its now owned by house of Fraser. Known as the 'Harrods of the North', it has held a Royal Warrant since 1911, and was visited by Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of its 150th anniversary in 1988. In recent years (2004) it changed its vision statement from its goal to 'be the most exciting department store outside of London' to 'Confidently Independent'.
Its probably no coincidence that this chap has choosen the 'Home, thats our department' window to bed down with his canine companion.
Up at the student run Bedlam Theatre there is a bench that is dedicated to the memory of a student who died a few years ago. The concrete bench is raised about two feet on a wall on the front of the theatre. From there you get a beautiful view all the way up North Bridge, the New College dome in the distance.
Tramps know it as 'the bench'. A central point to meet, watch the world go by, share tips and drinks, but not sheltered to sleep at night. As the colder weather draws in and other budget cuts bite its a harder time than ever in town. Although big cities attract the homeless, facilities are thin on the ground. Increasingly the 'Big Society' is being mentioned to replace trimmed initiatives and increasingly volunteers. This city can afford to waste over £600 million on trams solving a problem that did not exist, but little on supporting some of the vulnerable.

Spizzenergi was a late 1970s English punk/new wave band led by Kenneth Spiers, known as Spizz. Championed by John Peel, The band changed its name several times using alternate names including Spizzoil and Athletico Spizz 80.
They were the first band to sign to Geoff Travis's Rough Trade Records and the first to top the newly created UK Indie Chart early in 1980. They were perhaps best known for their single 'Where's Captain Kirk?'

After a Siouxsie and the Banshees gig at Birmingham Odeon Cinema Spizz jumped on stage and sang into the microphones, on the back of which was given a recording deal. He was already performing (solo) by 1977. He soon got together with like-minded guitarist Pete Petrol (real name Pete O'Dowd). In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place
and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch
be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59XBH - St Oswald's Church is in the village of Lower Peover, Cheshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Macclesfield and the deanery of Knutsford. Its benefice is combined with that of St Lawrence, Over Peover.[2]
History
A church has been on this site since at least 1269, when it was a chapel of ease to Great Budworth. The west tower dates from 1582, the mason being John Bowden. A south chapel was added around 1610, and the north chapel in 1624. The aisles were altered and re-roofed in 1852 by Anthony Salvin and there have been subsequent restorations

Just when you thought pipes were so yesterday.....
One of my favourite tracks, good to hear it today!
'Hash Pipe' is a song by US indie rock band Weezer. Released in 2001, it was the first single off the band's long-awaited third album, Weezer (The Green Album).
The song was aparently inspired by a male transvestite prostitute known for rambling to people in Santa Monica. Weezer drummer Patrick Wilson is featured on the cover of the song's CD single holding a pack of Natural American Spirit cigarettes that has been blurred out due to copyright issues.

The new white Samuel Beckett Bridge (Irish: Droichead Samuel Beckett) is a cable-stayed bridge in Dublin that joins Sir John Rogerson's Quay on the south side of the River Liffey to Guild Street and North Wall Quay in the Docklands area.
The architect is Santiago Calatrava, a designer of a number of innovative bridges and buildings. This is the second bridge in the area designed by Calatrava, the first being the James Joyce Bridge, which is further upstream.
Constructed by a 'Graham Hollandia Joint Venture', the main span of the Samuel Beckett Bridge is supported by 31 cable stays from a doubly back-stayed single forward arc tubular tapered spar, with decking provided for four traffic and two pedestrian lanes. It is also capable of opening through an angle of 90 degrees allowing ships to pass through. This is achieved through a rotational mechanism housed in the base of the pylon.
The shape of the spar and its cables is said to evoke an image of a harp, a symbol of Ireland lying on its edge.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4772241526 - 'While editing this image of TonyD taken in Warrington I was listening to an ipod playlist of Curtis Mayfield and Isaac Hayes tracks from the blaxploitation years of the 70's.
Hayes was singer-songwriter, actor, and musician and one of the main creative forces behind southern soul music label Stax Records. There he served as both an in-house songwriter and producer with partner David Porter during the mid-1960s.
In the late 1960s, Hayes became a recording artist, and recorded successful soul albums such as Hot Buttered Soul (1969) and Black Moses (1971). He was also the Stax label's premier artist. In addition to his work in pop music, Hayes was a film score composer for motion pictures. His best known work, for the 1971 soul cinema classic film Shaft, earned Hayes an Academy Award for Best Original Song (the first Academy Award received by an African-American in a non-acting category) and two Grammy Awards. He received a third Grammy for the album Black Moses.
Super Fly is the third studio album by American soul and funk musician Curtis Mayfield, released in July 1972 on Curtom Records. It was released as the soundtrack for the blaxploitation film of the same name. Widely considered a classic of 1970s soul and funk music, Super Fly was a nearly immediate hit. Its sales were bolstered by two million-selling singles, 'Freddie's Dead' and the title track. Pusherman is the third killer track on the disk. Super Fly is one of the few soundtracks to out-gross the film it accompanied.
In 1997, Rhino Records released a 25th Anniversary collection of the Super Fly album with a bonus disc of demo versions of songs, radio spots and interviews.
Isaac Hayes died of a stroke in August 2008, aged nearly 66.
He will probably be best remembered when during the late 1990s, Hayes gained new popularity as the voice of Chef animated TV series South Park. Chef was a soul-singing cafeteria worker at the South Park kids' school. A song from the series performed by Chef, 'Chocolate Salty Balls (P.S. I Love You)', received international radio airplay in 1999. It reached number-one on the UK singles chart. The track also appeared on the album Chef Aid: The South Park Album in 1998.
He left the show however in a row about the South Park episode 'Trapped in the Closet'. This was a satire of Scientology which aired in Nov 2005. In a response the South Park authors stated
'He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin.'
The South Park season 10 premiere (aired March 22, 2006) featured 'The Return of Chef', a thinly veiled telling of the affair from Parker and Stone's point of view. Using sound clips from past episodes, it depicts Chef as having been brainwashed and urges viewers (via Kyle talking to the town) to 'remember Chef as the jolly old guy who always broke into song' and not to blame Chef for his defection, but rather, as Kyle stated, 'be mad at that fruity little club for scrambling his brains.'
During the spring of 2008 before his death, Hayes shot scenes for a comedy about soul musicians inspired by the history of Stax Records entitled Soul Men, in which he appears as himself in a supporting role. His voice can be heard in the film in a voice-over role as Samuel L. Jackson, Bernie Mac, and Sharon Leal's characters are traveling through Memphis.
Two months after his death, the South Park episode 'The China Probrem' was dedicated to him.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4680058176 - 'A common sight these days. The addiction of getting beyond level 20 whether its just angry birds or Doom can be quite gripping. Apparently the two kids associated with the Columbine High School massacre in 1999 were addicted to Doom.
Grand Theft Auto is referred to a number of times in defence of various crimes in the UK and the States. In February 2003, 16-year-old American Dustin Lynch was charged with aggravated murder and made an insanity defense that he was 'obsessed' with Grand Theft Auto III.
On June 25, 2003, two American step brothers, Joshua and William Buckner, aged 14 and 16, respectively, used a rifle to fire at vehicles on Interstate 40 in Tennessee, killing a 45-year-old man and wounding a 19-year-old woman. The two shooters told investigators they had been inspired by Grand Theft Auto III. they were all found guilty.
In September 2007 in Ohio, 16-year-old Daniel Petric snuck out of his bedroom window to purchase the game Halo 3 against the orders of his father, a minister at New Life Assembly of God in Wellington, Ohio, U.S.
His parents eventually banned him from the game after he spent up to 18 hours a day with it, and secured it in a lockbox in a closet where the father also kept a 9mm handgun, according to prosecutors. In October 2007, Daniel used his father's key to open the lockbox and remove the gun and the game. He then entered the living room of his house and shot both of them in the head, killing his mother and wounding his father.
Petric is sentenced to life in prison without parole, which was later commuted to 23 years in imprisonment. While defense attorneys argued that Petric was influenced by video game addiction, the court fully dismissed these claims.
Surveys and research are pretty thin on the ground however if you trawl the internet. Many that can be found are short term or limited in scope. In the meantime, the games industry continues to grow, overtaking music sales in some countries.

He has had his face fungus now for well over 20 years. On one occasion when he had it shaved off at the barbers he was so unrecognisable that his next door neighbour thought he was a burgler, who had climbed into the back garden! He was simply unrecognisable!
Bob does alsorts around the centre which has now grown into quite a multi-faceted complex. There is even a working Brewery making traditionally crafted cask ales on the site. Yep I do have a nose for that kind of stuff!
In the course of history, men with facial hair have been ascribed various attributes such as wisdom and knowledge, sexual virility, masculinity, or high social status
and, conversely, filthiness, crudeness, or an eccentric disposition. In many cultures, beards are associated with nature and outdoorsmen. I remember in my mis-spent youth enjoying the band ZZ Top, strangely the only member of the band without a beard is in fact called Frank Beard (credited as Rube Beard on early LP's). However it must be said that he did in fact sport some facial hair, generally only a trimmed mustache.
In 1984, the Gillette Company (one of the worlds largest razor manufacturers) reportedly offered Gibbons and Hill (the bearded members of ZZ Top) $1 million each to shave their beards for a television commercial. They allegedly declined, saying 'We're too ugly without 'em'. Apparently the name came from blues guitar master B. B. King. The band had planned to call themselves ZZ. King, but felt it was too similar. Since B.B. King was at the 'top', they settled on ZZ Top.

Oh, the mistlethrush is coming.
Jack, put out the light.
Yes, those 'Jacks In The Green' (yep they are plural !) have been busy during that long unusually cold winter. The results of their quiet labour seem to have all burst out into bloom around us.
The Pussy willow (Salix Caprea) is native to our corner of Europe and bits of Asia. The flowers seen here along an old railway line, are soft silky, silvery 3-7 cm long catkins, produced in early spring before the new leaves appear. Its dioecious in that there are male and female catkins on different plants.
Before the male catkins of these species come into full flower they are covered in fine, greyish fur, leading to a fancied likeness to tiny cats, also known as 'pussies'. The catkins appear long before the leaves, and are one of the earliest signs of spring.
The male catkins mature yellow at pollen release, the female catkins pale green. The fruit is a small capsule 5-10 mm long containing numerous minute seeds embedded in fine cottony hairs. The seeds are very small (about 0.2 mm) with the fine hairs aiding dispersal. To germinate they require bare soil.
This plant was historically widely used as a browse for goats and that might be the origin of the other name for this shrub.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4420441332 - 'Another sign that spring is just about upon us, on a cold but bright March afternoon.
Hazel is common across europe and its outer edges. It is often seen with Oak on more fertile and lower lying ground. Hazel is a member of the birch family of trees, Betulaceae, and can grow to a height of 10 metres, although full height is seldom seen in Britain.
Typically it has a number of shoots or trunks branching out at, or just above, ground level, and this growth habit has led to some people referring to it as a bush rather than a tree, because it doesn't meet the strict definition for a tree, of having a single stem that is unbranched near the ground.
Male flowers are in the form of catkins, which are pale yellow in colour and up to 5 cm. long. They open in February, when hazel and its companion deciduous trees are all leafless, so they are one of the first obvious signs of spring in the forest. The female flowers are tiny red tufts, growing out of what look like swollen buds, and are visible on the same branches as the male catkins. Pollination is by wind, and hazel is self-incompatible - successful pollination only occurs between different trees, as a single tree cannot pollinate itself.
Fertilised female flowers grow into nuts which are up to 2 cm. in size and occur in clusters of 1 to 4. Each nut is partially enclosed by a cup-shaped sheath of papery bracts, or modified leaves. The nuts ripen to a brown colour in September and October, with the nut itself enclosed by a tough woody shell. Empty nuts are an occasional occurrence.
The nuts are distributed by squirrels, woodpeckers, and, after falling to the ground, by other small rodents. Most of the nuts are consumed by these dispersers, but some of those which are hoarded for winter, or are overlooked, germinate and grow the following spring.
Hazel leaves are eaten by roe deer and red deer, and the nuts, which are rich in fats and protein, are eaten by the wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) and squirrels. Squirrels split the shell of the nut in two halves to get the kernel inside, whereas wood mice will gnaw a hole through the shell. In England, hazel is an important tree for the dormouse.
Many thanks for SB for pointing me to a lot of info about Hazel that I never knew :-)

I came across them first supporting JCC (John Cooper Clark) at the Manchester Free Trade Hall Monday 25th June 1979. That day is etched on my mind as it was a mind-blowing event for me, seeing Ian Curtis and the powerful presence he had on that stage. I dont think a band has had that effect on me since and I have seen probably thousands of live gigs.
I bought Joy Division's debut album, 'Unknown Pleasures' the day it was released, in its special textured cover, then promptly played it to death. The original LP release contained no track information on the labels, nor the traditional 'side one' and 'side two' designations. The ostensible 'side one' was labeled Outside and displayed a reproduction of the image on the album cover, while the other side was labeled Inside and displayed the same image with the colours reversed (black-on-white). Track information and album credits appeared on the inner sleeve only.
This single 'Love will tear us apart' appeared after teh release of the second album Closer. It debuted when the band supported Buzzcocks on their UK tour in September and October 1979. It is one of the few songs in which singer Ian Curtis played guitar (albeit somewhat minimally). The lyrics ostensibly reflect the problems in Ian Curtis's marriage to Deborah Curtis, as well as his general frame of mind in the time leading up to his suicide in May 1980. Deborah Curtis had the phrase 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' inscribed on Ian Curtis's memorial stone.
It appears on the Substance compilation album. It was first recorded for a John Peel session in November 1979, then re-recorded in January 1980 and March 1980. It is the latter version that appears on Substance. The January 1980 version originally appeared as the single's B-side.
In 1995, to publicise the release of Permanent, the track was reissued, complete with a new remix done by Arthur Baker and a new radio edit, also known as the Permanent Mix. On September 24, 2007 (2007-09-24), the single was again reissued, in its original configuration. This time, it was to publicise the Collector's Edition re-issues of the band's three albums. Although the single was now issued on the Warner label, it retained all the classic Factory packaging, down to the FAC 23 catalogue number.
It has been covered by the world and his wife, including U2, Arcade Fire, The Cure and others. On the video for the song, at the very beginning, the door that swings open and shut has the initials of the band members carved into it. The video was shot by the band themselves as they recorded the song.
It includes production errors with colour being 'browned out' at some points. Due to another production error the vocals as sung by Curtis during the video didn't come out as intended. The song as originally recorded in the video sounds much more like that in their Peel Session. Curtis re-recorded the vocals separately with the hint of melancholy that helps make it distinctive. The oddly-shaped guitar played by Ian Curtis is a Vox Phantom (Often wrongly believed to be the Vox Mark III).
To learn more about JD, track down the 'Substance' compilation and the book 'Touching From A Distance' by Deborah Curtis. The devout Joy Division fan Anton Corbijn film 'Control' is a great starting point for getting to know the bands history. Tell 'em I sent you :-)

Forming a soundtrack to much of my 1980's, 'The The' are an English musical and multimedia group that have been active in various forms since 1979, with singer/songwriter Matt Johnson being the only constant band member.
In 1993, the five-piece line-up issued the album Dusk containing this single. It debuted at no 2 in the UK and spun off three Top 40 singles in the UK, led by 'Dogs of Lust'. A world tour followed, the Lonely Planet tour, at which point the band's line-up was reshuffled
Johnny Marr and James Eller left, and were replaced by Atlanta based guitarist Keith Joyner and New York bassist Jared Nickerson, respectively.
Also added was Boston harmonica player Jim Fitting, who auditioned in New York in early 1993. The version of their hit 'This Is The Day' featuring Jim Fitting was often dubbed 'That Was The Day'. Palmer bowed out partway through the tour and was replaced by ex Stabbing Westward drummer Andy Kubiszewski.
A full length film, directed by long time collaborator Tim Pope, was made for this album. From Dusk Til Dawn was shot in New Orleans and New York and along with Johnson and Johnny Marr also featured various characters from the New York underground scene such as sexologist Annie Sprinkle, writer and raconteur Quentin Crisp, Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, and porn star Rick Savage amongst many other carnival characters.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
This is one band that crop up at least three times a week on my ipod, generally early stuff like this or from the 'Miss You' 'Some Girls' era.
'Paint It, Black' is a song by The Rolling Stones, released on Friday 13 May 1966 as the first single from their fourth album Aftermath. It was originally titled 'Paint It Black' without a comma. Keith Richards has stated that the comma was added by the record label, Decca. It was a number one hit in the UK and USA.
The song began with Wyman playing organ at a recording session, in parody of the group's former co-manager Eric Easton, who had been an organist. Charlie Watts accompanied the organ by playing a vaguely Middle Eastern drum part
Watts' drum pattern became the basis for the final song. Brian Jones contributed the song's signature sitar riff (having taught himself to play after a visit with George Harrison), and Jagger contributed the lyrics, seemingly about a man mourning his dead girlfriend. Both electric and acoustic guitars and the background vocals are provided by Richards. The piano is played by Jack Nitzsche.
The track has been extensively covered and I must have about five different versions of it, including WASP, U2, The Standells and The Residents (do you remember them?).
To get to know The Stones, you could do worse than start at 'Forty Licks'. Here you get a taster of every era, as usual, tell 'em I sent you :-)

Old English: Cnut cyning
Old Norse: Knútr inn ríki [ˈknuːtr ˈɪnː ˈriːkʲɪ]
died 12 November 1035), also known as Cnut the Great and Canute, was King of England from 1016, King of Denmark from 1018, and King of Norway from 1028 until his death in 1035. The three kingdoms united under Cnut's rule are referred to together as the North Sea Empire.
As a Danish prince, Cnut won the throne of England in 1016 in the wake of centuries of Viking activity in northwestern Europe. His later accession to the Danish throne in 1018 brought the crowns of England and Denmark together. Cnut sought to keep this power-base by uniting Danes and English under cultural bonds of wealth and custom. After a decade of conflict with opponents in Scandinavia, Cnut claimed the crown of Norway in Trondheim in 1028. The Swedish city Sigtuna was held by Cnut (he had coins struck there that called him king, but there is no narrative record of his occupation). In 1031, Malcolm II of Scotland also submitted to him, though Anglo-Norse influence over Scotland was weak and ultimately did not last by the time of Cnut's death.
Dominion of England lent the Danes an important link to the maritime zone between the islands of Great Britain and Ireland, where Cnut, like his father before him, had a strong interest and wielded much influence among the NorseGaels. Cnut's possession of England's dioceses and the continental Diocese of Denmarkwith a claim laid upon it by the Holy Roman Empire's Archdiocese of Hamburg-Bremenwas a source of great prestige and leverage within the Catholic Church and among the magnates of Christendom (gaining notable concessions such as one on the price of the pallium of his bishops, though they still had to travel to obtain the pallium, as well as on the tolls his people had to pay on the way to Rome). After his 1026 victory against Norway and Sweden, and on his way back from Rome where he attended the coronation of the Holy Roman Emperor

Streets like a jungle......
'Boys and girls' was the lead single from the 'Park Life' album. It was Blur's first top 5 UK hit and most successful single until 'Country House' reached number 1 the following year. The single was seen as a comeback for the band, who had had a lean commercial period for a couple of years. The song surpassed the band's previous commercial peak 'There's No Other Way' by three spots on the UK Singles Chart.
The video, directed by 10cc's Kevin Godley, featured Blur performing the song against a bluescreen backdrop of documentary footage people on 18-30 package holidays. Godley branded the video as 'Page 3 rubbish' while Blur found it 'perfect'. The front cover of the single was taken from a pack of Durex condoms.
In 1994, the song was named single of the year by NME and Melody Maker in the UK. It was also nominated for best song at the MTV Europe Music Awards. Everyone should own at least one Blur album, my choice would be the 'Midlife: A Beginner's Guide to Blur'. Track it down, tell 'em I sent you.

Manchester has a wealth of LGBT culture and activities. The sitcom drama 'Queer as folk' was set in the Canal St area of the city. 20th century broadcaster and social commentator Brian Redhead once said 'Manchester ... is the capital, in every sense, of the North of England, where the modern world was born. The people know their geography is without equal. Their history is their response to it'. Whilst Ian Brown of the Stone Roses has previously said that 'Manchester has everything except a beach' (er.. top man, bob-on!).
Manchester has claimed to have the UK's largest gay population outside of London. Gay Village, centred on the Canal Street area, is home to numerous shops, restaurants, bars and clubs. On the last weekend in August it hosts the Manchester Pride Festival (previously known as Mardi Gras and Gayfest).
Manchester's gay culture was brought to mainstream attention on television series Queer as Folk and Coronation Street. It is also the birthplace of several gay rights organisations including the Campaign for Homosexual Equality, Queer Youth Alliance, The Lesbian &
Gay Foundation.
Manchester has its own gay sports teams, Village Manchester FC (soccer), Northern Wave (swimming) and Village Spartans (Rugby) which take part in Manchester's annual Pride Games. In the 1990s Manchester City Council gave support to the establishment of a gay centre and employed four lesbians and gay men to help implement their equal opportunity policy. Their work continued in spite of Section 28 and the City Council actively supported the Mardi Gras and other gay events.
The year round gay and lesbian heritage trail exhibits Manchester's gay history. In 2003, Manchester played host city to the annual Europride festival. The Lesbian &
Gay Foundation, Britain's biggest gay charity, is based on Richmond Street in the city centre. Manchester Metropolitan University has been named the most gay friendly university in the UK.

It was initially developed in London under the purview of the London Rubber Company and British Latex Products Ltd, where it was manufactured between 1932 and 1994. The London Rubber Company was formed in 1915, and the Durex brand name (Durability, reliability, and excellence) was launched in 1929, although London Rubber did not begin manufacturing own-brand condoms until 1932, in collaboration with a rubber technology student from Poland named Lucian Lundau. The first book on The London Rubber Company and the history of Durex condoms, written by Jessica Borge, was published in September 2020 by McGill-Queen's University Press.
The London Rubber Company later merged with SSL International, since 2010 which has been owned by the Anglo-Dutch company Reckitt Benckiser. It is one of the best-selling condom brands around the world, with 30% of the global market. In 2006, Durex condoms were the second-best-selling brand of condoms in the United States, with Trojan condoms being the first. It is supplied by, among others, the company Karex.
In 2007 the last factory making Durex condoms in the UK stopped manufacturing and production has since moved to China, India and Thailand. The modern range includes a wide variety of latex condom, including the Sheik and Ramses brands in North America, and the Avanti condom. Durex also provides a range of lubricants and sex toys.
Although Durex was not an official sponsor of the Olympic Games, Durex provided 150,000 free condoms to more than 10,000 athletes that competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London

It carried forward the legacy created by clubs such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester, the Chateau Impney (Droitwich), the Catacombs (Wolverhampton) and the Golden Torch (Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent). It remains one of the most famous clubs in Northern England. In 1978, allegedly the American music magazine Billboard voted Wigan Casino The Best Disco in the World, ahead of New York City's Studio 54. Although there is no tangible evidence of this award ever being publicised.
This England, a TV documentary about the Wigan Casino, was filmed in 1977. Russ Winstanley and Dave Nowell wrote a history of the club, Soul Survivors, The Wigan Casino Story, which was published in 1996.
Wigan Casino was the name of the last incarnation of a Wigan ballroom called the Empress. Local DJs Brian Rigby and Alan Cain approached lease owner Gerry Marshall to run all-nighters. Venue manager Mike Walker brought in Russ Winstanley, who had a DJ set at the local rugby club, to the Casino.
Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2C59GFX - HM Prison Thorn Cross is a Category D Adult Male Institution for males aged 21+.
