Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M4K85B - Until 1992, upon leaving either Manchester Piccadilly or Victoria stations you'd be met by this - a line of little 'Centreline' buses waiting to take passengers from one station to the other across the city centre via the shopping and office districts.
Manchester was the site of the first passenger railway in the world - the Liverpool & Manchester Railway in 1830. But the haphazard way railways were planned and competed in the Victoria age meant that there was little coordination and there were three separate major stations in the city with no effective links between north and south. London Road (later Piccadilly) served the south, while Victoria served the north. The third, Central, closed in 1969 and for a while became a semi-derelict car park before its wonderful transformation into an exhibition centre.
So to connect the two stations, SELNEC and ten GMT ran a 'Centreline' service running at frequent intervals, with a flat fare to speed boarding. Some of the route was in narrow streets so these little Seddon 'Midi' buses were bought, built in Oldham. They were perfect for the job operationally but they were not popular with their drivers or the garage staff as they were difficult to maintain, noisy inside and with most of their weight at the front they could skid in wet or icy weather. But they did their job day in, day out for many years, buzzing around the city streets and usually full.
The Seddon's lasted twelve years, a very good age for lightly-built buses, until replaced by new Dennis buses in 1986. Then in 1992 Metrolink at last provide a rail-borne link across the city centre between the two main stations. The raison d'etre for Centreline was gone and the service ended.
Most of the Seddon's were scrapped but one or two still exist including number 1722, which is fully restored and on display at the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester.

Twenty-three people were killed, including the attacker, and 1,017 were injured, many of them children. Several hundred more suffered psychological trauma. The bomber was Salman Ramadan Abedi, a 22-year-old local man of Libyan ancestry. After initial suspicions of a terrorist network, police later said they believed Abedi had largely acted alone, but that others had been aware of his plans. The Islamic State claimed responsibility shortly after the attack.[3] In March 2020, the bomber's brother, Hashem Abedi, was found guilty of 22 counts of murder and attempting to murder 1,017 others, and was sentenced to life in prison.
The incident was the deadliest terrorist attack and the first suicide bombing in the United Kingdom since the 7 July 2005 London bombings

A mosaic tribute to The Fall's Mark E. Smith has been unveiled - and purposefully hidden away on a back street for fans to discover in the Northern Quarter
There is a new tribute to The Fall frontman Mark E Smith in Manchester city centre - but you'll have to head off the beaten track to find it.
The maverick mastermind of the Manc band died in January, aged 60, after battling cancer, with tributes paid from rock and cultural icons from across the globe.
Now there's a permanent tribute, hidden in the Northern Quarter, to his lyrical genius.
Venture to the far (and dead) end of Short Street and you will find two striking mosaics - one in Mark's image and the other featuring lyrics from The Fall song Ten Houses of Eve, framed by the brickwork of the far wall of the Affleck's building.
The artworks have been commissioned by renowned mosaic artist Mark Kennedy, and were created by artist Mary Goodwin.
Kennedy had been friends with Smith for 15 years, and hopes to add to artworks in the secluded end of Short Street as an ongoing tribute to Smith and The Fall.
He says: I want to call this Fall corner, and over the years I'd like to add little bits every time there's a celebratory element to the group.
I like the corner because it's hidden and to an extent The Fall were quite a hidden band and Mark's lyrics have many hidden meanings too.
It's hard to find, and like The Fall in many respects, you have to look for it and that works for me.
The lyrics on the artwork read: Identity art.. if only the shards you'd relocate back in place, ending with the dates of Smith's life - 1957-2018.
Kennedy was keen for a female artist to create the works, as a testament to the female musicians in The Fall, and commissioned Leeds-based Mary Goodwin

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RPGEJY - Afflecks (formerly Affleck's Palace) is an indoor market in Manchester, England, in the city's Northern Quarter on the junction of Church Street/Tib Street and Dale Street with Oldham Street. Dozens of independent stalls, small shops and boutiques operate in the one building. The building was once home to Affleck & Brown, one of the city's principal department stores. A bar on the original site opened in 2015, under the Affleck & Brown name.
Affleck & Brown was started in the 1860s as a drapery business in Oldham Street. The store grew to occupy a whole block between Oldham Street, Church Street and Tib Street and become a full flung department store. The business had a good reputation as a credit draper and was known for a good range of cloth for home dressmaking as well as a furrier.
Affleck's Palace first opened in 1982 by James and Elaine Walsh with an ethos of offering a safe environment for entrepreneurs to start out with affordable rent and no long-term contracts. Unit holders operated under a licence agreement which allowed them to pay for space on a week by week basis. The atmosphere and colourful maze-like layout led to Affleck's becoming a mecca for alternative culture. The establishment was able to bounce back from two building fires and overcame many obstacles.
During the 1990s 'Madchester Summer of Love' period, when local bands such as the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Inspiral Carpets were at the height of their popularity, Affleck's Palace was a fashionable place to get oversized flared jeans and tie dyed T-shirts and 'Eastern Bloc' was a popular record shop as it dealt in all the latest underground dance tunes.

It is the second busiest interchange station outside London, with almost 3.8 million passengers changing trains annually.
Between the late 1990s and early 2000s, Piccadilly Station was refurbished, taking five years and costing £100 million (in 2002), it was the most expensive improvement on the UK rail network at the time. Further improvements and expansion plans have been mooted. In October 2016, a Transport and Works Act application was submitted for the construction of two platforms as part of the Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Oxford Road Capacity Scheme. As of 2018, this application has not been approved by the government. To allow the station to accommodate high speed services under High Speed 2 proposals, five platforms would be required and the Metrolink station would be reconfigured.

The pedestrianised street, which runs along the west side of the Rochdale Canal, is lined with gay bars and restaurants. 90's Focus led to several of the pubs on or near Canal Street acquiring a predominantly gay clientele. In 1991, Manto (Manchester Tomorrow) bar opened at no. 46. It was built in 1989 by Benedict Smith Architects. Unlike the other gay bars at that time, Manto had large glass windows, allowing the casual passer-by to view what was going on inside. Previously, many establishments catering for the gay community were often keen to conceal activities from the general public, but the architectural design of Manto was seen as a queer visual statement of we're here, we're queer get used to it, and a brick-and-mortar refusal to hide any more, or to remain underground and invisible.
Over the next decade, more numerous and larger bars opened along the canal side, turning Canal Street into the centre of the most successful gay village in Europe. Because of this, the Canal Street street signs are regularly defaced to read Anal Treet or Anal Street. The success was further enhanced by the use of Canal Street and its bars in several television series, including Bob and Rose and Queer as Folk, both written by Russell T Davies.

The shop was originally located in Afflecks Palace and has recently moved to its present location on Stevenson Square (5a Stevenson Sq, Northern Quarter, Manchester, M1 1DN) in 2011. It soon became a cultural icon and integral part within the Manchester music scene. Back in the late 80's E Bloc helped to launch bands such as the Inspiral Carpets, while also hosting in-store signings with The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays. The shop was also responsible for breaking much of the new dance music at the time, being one of the only shops in the UK to import dance music from around the globe. One of the owners went on to become part of 808 State. E Bloc also had heavy involvement in the early career paths of A Guy Called Gerald & K Klass. The huge image of 22 Manchester worker bees has been emblazoned on a wall on the side of the Koffee Pot building in the heart of the Northern Quarter.
Each bee, pictured swarming around a honey heart, represents one of the innocent people killed in the horrific attack.
It has been completed over last weekend by graffiti artist Russell Meeham , also know as Qubek'. As word spread about the work of art taking shape people came past to see what he was doing. When the last bee was competed it drew a round of applause.

Two days after the attack, Russ painted the old toilet block in Stevenson Square with bees and two hands joined together in a heart.
It prompted the M.E.N to commission him to create the mural.
Working from atop a cherry picker armed with dozens of cans of spray paint and some music, Russ spent two days creating his masterpiece.
Cafe bosses have previously turned down all requests for it to be used for a mural but kindly agreed to this one.
Speaking as he worked on his mammoth tribute Russ said: It's simple but effective, without being too morbid. Everyone will know why we've painted it and it's nice to have been involved in the project.

I did a piece following the bombing to put a positive message out there to represent the community in Manchester and a tribute to those who lost their lives that wasn't too morbid.
It got people talking and, from what I saw, brightened a lot of people's days.

The Rochdale Canal met the Bridgewater Canal at Castlefield in 1805 and in the 1830s they were linked with the Mersey and Irwell Navigation by two short cuts. In 1848 the two viaducts of the Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway crossed the area and joined each other, two further viaducts and one mainline station Manchester Central railway station followed. It has a tram station, Deansgate-Castlefield tram stop (formerly G-Mex) providing frequent Manchester Metrolink services to Eccles, Bury, Altrincham, Manchester Piccadilly, East Didsbury and Rochdale.
Castlefield was designated a conservation area in 1980 and the United Kingdom's first designated Urban Heritage Park in 1982

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GJ798E - The River Tib is a minor tributary of the River Medlock in Manchester, England. It has been culverted along its entire length since probably about 1820 and now runs beneath Manchester city centre. Tib Street (53°2901N 2°1405WCoordinates: 53°2901N 2°1405W) and Tib Lane are named after the watercourse.
During the Roman period, the Tib marked the boundary of the vicus or settlement of Mamucium
the river continued to mark Manchester's boundary until medieval times, as well as providing drinking water. A notion concerning The Tib's name, coined by Geoffrey Ashworth in his book The Lost Rivers of Manchester, is that the river was given its name by homesick Roman soldiers after the River Tiber, but with the word shortened to reflect the size difference between the two rivers. Alternatively, the name may derive from the Celtic word for watercourse.
The river's source is a spring in Miles Platting (53°2936N 2°1308W), from where it flows underneath Oldham Road and the eponymous Tib Street to reach the city centre. After flowing underneath West Mosley Street, the Tib crosses Princess Street to flow underneath the Manchester Town Hall extension, the Central Library and the Midland Hotel's dining room, before joining the Medlock at Gaythorn (now First Street, 53°2823N 2°1452W), close to Deansgate railway station.

In total Kennedy has spent almost 20 years crafting the two sets of mosaics amongst other on-going work. The theme on Affleck's is Manchester heroes, with a nod given the shopping bazaar's rock'n'roll past. Thus among the great figures of Manchester depicted there are musicians, actors, media and radical politicians.
He also couldn't help including something from his own Manchester memories of Tib Street.
When I was a little kid I used to go to Tib Street all the time to get my ferrets and buy mice from a little pet shop and that's where we all used to go. Next door was Tib Street Joke Shop that used to sell masks and stink bombs so there's one piece that represents all that.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RPGEK5 - Anthony Howard Wilson (20 February 1950 10 August 2007) was a British record label owner, radio and television presenter, nightclub manager, impresario and journalist for Granada Television and the BBC.
Wilson was the man behind some of Manchester's most successful bands. He was one of the five co-founders of Factory Records and the founder and manager of the Haçienda nightclub. Wilson was known as Mr Manchester, dubbed as such for his work in promoting the culture of Manchester throughout his career.
He was portrayed by Steve Coogan in Michael Winterbottom's 2002 film 24 Hour Party People, and by Craig Parkinson in Anton Corbijn's 2007 film Control.
Depending in what he was working on, he would switch between alternate versions of his name. For example, when he was being a serious formal and respectable persona, such as certain tv presenting appearances, he would use Anthony H Wilson, or for example when reporting for Granada Reports he was referred to as Anthony Wilson, otherwise he would go by Tony Wilson most commonly while on Factory Records business, all alternate versions being legitimate variants of his full name.
In early 2007 emergency surgery was performed to remove one of his kidneys. This forced the postponement of plans to create a Southern Hemisphere version of the In the City festival. Despite the surgery, cancer progressed and a course of chemotherapy was not effective. Wilson died of a heart attack in Manchester's Christie Hospital on 10 August 2007 aged 57. Following the news of his death, the Union Flag on Manchester Town Hall was lowered to half mast as a mark of respect.
The main square of the HOME/First Street development in Manchester, which opened in 2015, is named Tony Wilson Place.

The building dates back to around 1862 when a local brewery, the McKenna Brothers, built it as the flagship pub of their operation. It was called the George and Dragon
the first licence on the site was granted to Elizabeth March in 1803. No-one knows when music started to be played at the venue but market pubs were well known for their musical connections, and the nearby Smithfield Markets and textile factories ensured that this was a bustling area with many musicians and buskers. Manchester was then at its height as the first industrial city at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution.
The 'Band on the Wall' was a nickname from the 1930s when the landlord of the time Ernie Tyson placed a stage high on the far wall of the pub on which the musicians played. A regular band of two accordions, piano, drums, a singer and occasionally a saxophone would play.
In 1975 local jazz musician Steve Morris and his business partner Frank Cusick bought the George & Dragon with the idea of turning it into a jazz club
a conversation with Johnny Roadhouse convinced them to name it the Band on the Wall. Jazz musicians from the local area as well as international artist played at the club. The late 1970s saw the emergence of a new sound, punk, and it was at the Band on the Wall that many of the Manchester punk bands played
Band on the Wall is operated by Inner City Music Ltd, a registered charity. The organisation was awarded £3.2 million in July 2007, in combined awards by Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of a £4 million project to transform the venue into a 21st-century centre for music.
The Band on the Wall was refurbished before reopening on 25 September 2009 with a performance by the venue's patrons Julian Joseph and Mica Paris
On 18 June 2018, Inner City Music Ltd announced that Arts Council England had approved £1.65 million stage two Capital funding
