Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AEDHXN - Hit the North is a 1987 song by British post-punk band the Fall. The lyrics were composed by band leader Mark E. Smith with the music written by Simon Rogers and Brix Smith. It was released as a single in October 1987 and reached number 57 on the UK singles chart. According to Tom Doyle of Sound on Sound, the song is a rousing groove“based anthem which is now regarded by many as both their ultimate statement and best single.
The record was part of a conscious approach by Brix Smith and Simon Rogers, both of whom had recently joined the band, in increasing the Fall's popularity and accessibility. Brix Smith said: It was definitely a conscious thing on my part because they were so, so underground and so unappreciated and unknown. I just thought they were such an important band and it needed to be broadcast all over the world. Her husband at the time, Mark E. Smith, disagreed: ..it wasn't a conscious effort. It was just trying to get it a bit more punchy. I always like it very clean and simple. A lot of groups are swamped with sound.
The music was written by Rogers and Brix Smith, and recorded by Rogers on his newly-acquired Sequential Circuits Studio 440 sequencer-sampler. Rogers said literally the first thing I put into it was a bass and a snare just on two pads, a little tiny Indian bell... and a sax note and a bass note from a Gentle Giant record. When Rogers demonstrated the instrument to Mark E. Smith, Smith said: What's that music? I'll have that, just do me a tape. Smith recorded a demo, with the original programmed drums removed
on the final recording they are replaced by samples of Simon Wolstencroft's drumming. The song was recorded in Abbey Road Studios in July 1987, during the sessions for the band's album The Frenz Experiment, with Rogers as producer and Ian Grimble as recording engineer. Guitar and vocal distortions and other effects were added in the studio.

Forty-seven is the fifteenth prime number, a safe prime, the thirteenth supersingular prime, and the sixth Lucas prime. Forty-seven is a highly cototient number. It is an Eisenstein prime with no imaginary part. Its the atomic number of silver and the atomic weight of Titanium.
Fortyseven has been the favourite number of Pomona College, California, USA, since 1964. A mathematical proof, written in 1964 by Professor Donald Bentley, supposedly demonstrates that all numbers are equal to 47. However, Bentley offered it as a 'joke proof' to further a popular student research project that listed real and imaginative '47 sightings'. Bentley used the invalid proof to introduce his students to the concept of mathematical proofs. The proof used limits to show that the sum of the two equal sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the base side. Bentley chose forty-seven as the base side, but he could have used any number.
Joe Menosky graduated from Pomona College in 1979 and went on to become one of the story writers of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Menosky 'infected' other Star Trek writers with an enthusiasm for the number 47. As a result, 47, its reverse 74, its multiples, or combinations of 47 occur surreptitiously in almost every episode of the program and its spin-offs Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise. Forty-seven might be mentioned in dialogue or appear on a computer screen, for example:
- In the Voyager episode 'Parallax', we learn that the Emergency Medical Holographic Channel is 47 and that the EMH has the experience of 47 individual medical officers.
- In the 2009 film Star Trek, the Enterprise was built in Sector 47 of the Riverside Shipyards, and 47 Klingon ships are said to have been destroyed by Nero's ship, the Narada.
Washroom Hygiene monitors are all the rage these days. They come in a range of Standard, standard Plus, Professional, Professional Plus and Ultima (which can count down, has customer feed back buttons, option to bleep if poor or fair pressed more than say 5 times within a countdown period, data showing what time buttons were pressed, Delay on buttons pressed). So pretty much all as would be needed from a bog standard clock.

I have been a regular customer of Ron (of Ron Snax, Outside catering available 01827-706191) for some time. The mis-spelt pricelist notwithstanding (Turkcy), he does a cracking job. \u00a32.40 buys you a bagette the size of two fists, packed with fried goodness. My only gripe is that he doesn't do black pudding, but that has never stopped me calling there. His litre of steaming tea or coffee also blows Costa away.
Rons does barms and soft bagettes. It always amazes me how short a distance you need to travel, for bread names to change so dramatically. It could be a bread-cake, teacake (obviously without fruit), a sub, barm, breadbun, cob, stotty, scone, buttery, flour cake or muffin. Using the wrong one can lead to a lot of confusion. Any more bread styles you know from across Britain, please leave a comment and let me know.
The old 'Greasy Spoon' in my opinion gets an unfair press. Wikipedia defines it as:
'Greasy spoon is a colloquial or slang term used in Britain, Ireland and North America for small, especially cheap, archetypal working class restaurants or diners. The name 'greasy spoon' is used to imply a less-than-rigorous approach to hygiene and dishwashing, and appears in use in the early 20th century'.
There have been a few stories, mainly hoaxes based on ficticious EU reports about eating habits of long distance drivers and their health. As any truck driver knows, the greatest hazard is infact 'Truck drivers testicle' caused by vibrations encountered over time from sitting over the tractor unit engine.
Thankfully, Rons position appears safe, although he did tell me that a new rating system is apparently coming in. So look out for his star rating, next time you are on the A46. Tell him HotpixUK sent you!

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3838285938 - 'A classic services built from stout 1965's concrete, an iconic landmark on britains first motorway, M6 Preston Bypass.
It used to be Rank, then Granada, was Forton, then Lancaster, then Lancaster (Forton).
The tower is called 'The Pennine Tower', and when it opened it had a restaurant with a panoramic view. However, the tower fell short of the Health and Safety regulations for the number of emergency exits required in a public building, so it had to be closed. It's now only used for staff training and offices.
The tower is unique to the services, but Rank built slightly smaller versions at other services of theirs such as Hilton Park, which has suffered exactly the same fate. Although the one here is the 'daddy' (as they say).
In 2008 the services won a five star loo award, one more than in 2006. Worth sharing that with you, in case you might consider holding on until Knutsford.
Rumours that the cafe used to revolve inside like 'Piz Gloria' in Switzerland where the famous James Bond was filmed'on her Majesty's Secret Service are untrue. (apparently).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JAGDR2 - Editorial image of a Welcome Break motorway service station fuel price sign in the United Kingdom showing high unleaded and diesel prices, illustrating the pressure of rising petrol and diesel costs on motorists, commuters, families, delivery drivers, haulage operators and the wider British economy. The photograph is useful for stories about inflation, fuel price volatility, pump price rises, energy insecurity, transport costs, household budgets, commuting expenses, business overheads and the cost of living squeeze affecting drivers across the UK. With bright red digital numbers, familiar roadside branding and a clear forecourt pricing display, the image works strongly for newspapers, magazines, websites and business reports covering expensive fuel, road travel costs, petrol station pricing, diesel inflation, motoring affordability and the knock-on effect of higher fuel bills on shopping, tourism, trade, logistics and domestic budgeting. It is also relevant to coverage of global crude oil prices, oil market volatility, refinery margins, wholesale fuel costs, fuel duty debate, supply chain disruption, shipping route concerns, Middle East tensions, Strait of Hormuz fears, geopolitical instability and worries about imported energy costs feeding through into UK pump prices. The image supports broader editorial themes such as car dependency, motorway travel, service station economics, rising living costs, inflationary pressure, freight costs, commercial vehicle running costs, family holiday travel budgets, regional fuel price differences and public frustration at forecourt price increases. Search relevance includes UK fuel prices, high petrol prices, high diesel prices, Welcome Break, motorway services, fuel price sign, unleaded price, diesel price, expensive fuel, fuel inflation, energy costs, oil prices, transport inflation, motoring costs, pump prices, roadside sign, British motorists, fuel affordability and economic pressure.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DHGYWM - The Metropolitan Borough of Walsall is a local government district in the West Midlands, England, with the status of a metropolitan borough. It is named after its largest settlement, Walsall, but covers a larger area which also includes the towns of Aldridge, Bloxwich, Brownhills, Darlaston and Willenhall. For Eurostat purposes Walsall and Wolverhampton is a NUTS 3 region (code UKG35) and is one of five boroughs or unitary districts that comprise the West Midlands NUTS 2 region. The borough had an estimated population of 254,500 in 2007.
The current boundaries were set as part of the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972, with a change to the north of the borough in 1994. It is bounded on the west by the City of Wolverhampton, the south by the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell, to the south east by the City of Birmingham, and by the Staffordshire districts of Lichfield, Cannock Chase and South Staffordshire to the east, north and northwest respectively. Most of the borough is highly industrialised and densely populated, but areas around the north and east of the borough are open space.
In 1986 the borough became an effective unitary authority when the West Midlands County Council was abolished. However it remains part of the West Midlands for ceremonial purposes, and for functions such as policing, fire and public transport.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEY9FD - Norton Canes services is a motorway service station on the M6 Toll, in the village of Norton Canes near the towns of Brownhills, Cannock, and Walsall, in Staffordshire, England. It is operated by RoadChef, who has a 25-year lease on the site. The company also uses the site as its head office
Norton Canes services is located on the M6 Toll between junctions T6 and T7, and is positioned so that it can be accessed before reaching the main toll plaza in either direction. It is a single-sided site, unlike a large majority of other service areas which have separate facilities for each direction. For this reason it is possible to do a U-turn at the services
however, it is not possible to avoid the toll in that way.
Unlike most other service areas, where it is illegal for traffic from local roads to use the back entrance to the site, provision has been made at Norton Canes for traffic from the A5 to access the services
