Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8PTRJ - Steam traction engine O.H.M.S., registration MA7892, travels through Lymm village centre in Warrington, Cheshire, towing a passenger trailer during the December Lymm Dickensian Christmas Festival. The preserved road steam vehicle is shown in steam with smoke rising from its chimney, polished red and black paintwork, large spoked wheels, brass detail, festive wreath decoration and a trailer carrying visitors through the historic village streets. Lymm Dickensian is a long-running volunteer-led community Christmas event, begun in 1985 and centred on Victorian dress, stalls, street entertainment, Santa activities, festive food, processions and seasonal atmosphere. The scene is useful for editorial coverage of heritage transport, steam traction engines, vintage vehicles, Christmas fairs, village festivals, community events, Cheshire tourism, Warrington heritage, industrial history, road steam preservation and family days out. Steam traction engines and road locomotives were once practical working machines used for haulage, agricultural tasks, showmen's work and local industry, but today they survive mainly through preservation societies, rallies, transport days and enthusiast owners. The photograph captures the pleasure and spectacle of a full-size steam vehicle operating slowly in a village setting, with wet roads, winter clothing, passengers, event barriers and town-centre buildings adding a documentary seasonal feel. It can support stories about Lymm's festive traditions, volunteer event organisation, road closures, historic transport displays, traction engine preservation, public nostalgia, engineering heritage, Christmas parades and the continuing popularity of steam power at local events. The O.H.M.S. name and MA7892 registration are visible on the engine front, although the exact maker and build history should be checked from owner or rally programme notes before making detailed claims about manufacturer or date.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RX17RM - Taken on 09 Sep 2023, this photograph shows Cheshire County Council white metal mile post 1898 - to Lymm, Manchester, Altrincham, at Stockton Heath A49, A56 junction, Warrington, England, UK,. The location is London Rd, Stockton Heath, Warrington, Cheshire, England, UK, WA4 6LG. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains close-up metalwork, embossed lettering, patina, rust and wear that document everyday civic infrastructure. The 1898 Cheshire County Council milepost is a small but valuable piece of roadside heritage, showing pre-satnav wayfinding, cast-metal manufacture and the historic road network around Stockton Heath. It can be used in editorial features, business reports, local-history writing, travel guides, public-policy explainers, educational material and SEO-led stock-photo searches needing a specific real-world image. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include milepost, Stockton Heath, Warrington, Cheshire, London Road, cast iron, Cheshire County Council, 1898, metal, white, WA4 6LG, Lymm, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. It has value for both local and national stories, especially where writers need to connect a named place or object with wider economic, social, environmental or cultural change.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K967KB - Pick-your-own pumpkins offer diversified income channels
The market for pumpkins in the UK has seen a huge growth in the past decade, with the public increasingly looking for an on-farm experience and to buy directly from producers.
Pumpkins can offer significant additional income for farmers if done well, especially when accompanied by other value-added extras such as refreshments or attractions.
There are two main markets either selling direct to the consumer or wholesale. Each has its benefits and challenges.
When growing for wholesale, there are often extra costs for grading, on-farm storage and transport. The labour-intensive harvest process for wholesale at scale will also need seasonal labour, stock-photo/gotonysmith-Which.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>which can be difficult to find.
Selling direct to consumers poses other challenges, including public access to the farm.
Pumpkin seeds can be planted indoors from mid- to late April, however it is more common to plant seeds and seedlings outdoors from May to early June.
Lack of fruit can be an issue and diseases include powdery mildew and grey mould. Pumpkins can also suffer in very wet seasons and may need irrigation during a dry summer.
Will John and Chris Creed, consultants at agricultural adviser Adas, say that the market is becoming saturated in some regions of the UK. However, businesses can still be profitable if they are able to market effectively.
What are the essential requirements and costs?
Mr Creed says: To be successful, you have got to have infrastructure, hard car parking, booking systems, strong social media campaigns and good road access.
A potentially less risky option is to grow for an existing business, which may have already invested in the infrastructure to cater for the public.
Some farm shops and garden centres have very good infrastructures to accommodate the public, but they haven't got much ground. So they may be able to grow some and then stock up from a local grower, which can be a win-win situation for everybody,

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJGB47 - The Bridgewater Canal connects Runcorn, Manchester and Leigh, in North West England. It was commissioned by Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, to transport coal from his mines in Worsley to Manchester. It was opened in 1761 from Worsley to Manchester, and later extended from Manchester to Runcorn, and then from Worsley to Leigh.
The canal is connected to the Manchester Ship Canal via a lock at Cornbrook
to the Rochdale Canal in Manchester
to the Trent and Mersey Canal at Preston Brook, southeast of Runcorn
and to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Leigh. It once connected with the River Mersey at Runcorn but has since been cut off by a slip road to the Silver Jubilee Bridge.
The Bridgewater canal is described as the first great achievement of the canal age, although the Sankey Canal opened earlier. Bridgewater captured the public imagination because of its engineering feats
it required the construction of an aqueduct to cross the River Irwell, and a tunnel at Worsley. Its success helped inspire a period of intense canal building in Britain, known as Canal Mania. It later faced intense competition from the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Macclesfield Canal. Navigable throughout its history, it is one of the few canals in Britain not to have been nationalised, and remains privately owned. Pleasure craft now use the canal which forms part of the Cheshire Ring network of canals.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JBJ8BN - Lymm is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Warrington, Cheshire, England, which incorporates the hamlets of Booths Hill, Broomedge, Church Green, Deansgreen, Heatley, Heatley Heath, Little Heatley, Oughtrington, Reddish, Rushgreen and Statham. At the 2021 United Kingdom census it had a population of 12,700.
History
The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre. The village appears as Limme in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Lymm was an agricultural village until the Industrial Revolution, which brought the Bridgewater Canal and the Warrington and Altrincham Junction Railway to the village. The village played a prominent role within the salt extraction industry, gold beating industry and cotton industry (many of its inhabitants were fustian cutters).
Lymm Heritage Centre, which opened in June 2017, is in the centre of the village on Legh Street. It hosts exhibitions related to local history as well as activities for schools and visitors.
Morris dancing was taking place in Lymm as early as 1817, often appearing in the village at Rushbearing time throughout the Victorian era. Morris dancing[7] continues to feature within the village with Lymm Morris dancers frequently performing during Rushbearing and at the various annual village festivals including the Lymm May Queen Festival, Lymm Festival and Lymm Dickensian Festival.
In 2017, Lymm was voted as one of the 'Best Places to Live' according to The Times and The Sunday Times list. In 2023, the village was voted as one of Britains 'Most Desirable Towns' according to The Daily Telegraph

Waterloo Sunset is a song by British rock band The Kinks. It was released as a single in 1967, and featured on their album Something Else by The Kinks. Composed and produced by Kinks frontman Ray Davies, 'Waterloo Sunset' is one of the band's best known and most acclaimed songs. A London FM radio poll in 2004 named this the 'Greatest Song About London', while Time Out named it the 'Anthem of London'.
The lyrics describe a solitary narrator watching (or imagining) two lovers passing over a bridge, with the melancholic observer reflecting on the couple, the Thames, and Waterloo Station. The song was rumoured to have been inspired by the romance between two British celebrities of the time, actors Terence Stamp and Julie Christie. Ray Davies denied this in his autobiography, and claimed in a 2008 interview, 'It was a fantasy about my sister going off with her boyfriend to a new world and they were going to emigrate and go to another country.'
Despite its complex arrangement, the sessions for 'Waterloo Sunset' lasted a mere ten hours
Dave Davies later commented on the recording: 'We spent a lot of time trying to get a different guitar sound, to get a more unique feel for the record. In the end we used a tape-delay echo, but it sounded new because nobody had done it since the 1950s. I remember Steve Marriott of the Small Faces came up and asked me how we'd got that sound. We were almost trendy for a while.' The single was one of the group's biggest UK successes, reaching number two on Melody Maker's chart, and went on to become one of their most popular and best-known.
The record reached number 2 on the British charts in mid 1967 (it failed to dislodge the Tremeloes' 'Silence Is Golden' from the number 1 position). Davies considered the song a professional milestone, where he managed to blend the commercial demands of a hit single with his own highly personal style of narrative songwriting. The elaborate production was the first Kinks recording produced solely by Davies, without longtime producer Shel Talmy. In subsequent arguments with Kinks management over the direction of the band, Davies would say 'I've done 'Waterloo Sunset', now I want to do something else'.
In 2010 Ray Davies stated the song was originally entitled 'Liverpool Sunset'. In an interview with the Liverpool Echo he explained 'Liverpool is my favourite city, and the song was originally called Liverpool Sunset. I was inspired by Merseybeat. I'd fallen in love with Liverpool by that point. On every tour, that was the best reception. We played The Cavern, all those old places, and I couldn't get enough of it. I had a load of mates in bands up there, and that sound – not The Beatles but Merseybeat – that was unbelievable. It used to inspire me every time. So I wrote Liverpool Sunset. Later it got changed to Waterloo Sunset, but there's still that play on words with Waterloo. London was home, I'd grown up there, but I like to think I could be an adopted Scouser. My heart is definitely there.
Heracleum mantegazzianum, commonly known as giant hogweed, cartwheel-flower, wild parsnip, wild rhubarb, giant cow parsnip, or giant cow parsley, is a plant in the family Apiaceae. It typically grows to heights of 2–5 metres (6 ft 7 in–16 ft 5 in), sometimes reaching 7 metres (23 ft). Except for size, it closely resembles Common Hogweed (Heracleum sphondylium), Heracleum sosnowskyi or Garden
Angelica (Angelica archangelica). It is phototoxic and considered to be a noxious weed in many jurisdictions. Giant Hogweed is native to the Caucasus Region and Central Asia. It was introduced to Britain as an ornamental in the 19th century, and it has also spread to Finland, Germany, France, Belgium, Czech Republic, Latvia, United States and Canada.
The sap of Giant Hogweed causes phytophotodermatitis in humans, resulting in blisters, long-lasting scars, and—if it comes in contact with eyes—blindness. These serious reactions are due to the furocoumarin derivatives in the leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds of the plant.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HF4A - Heracleum mantegazzianum, commonly known as giant hogweed, is a monocarpic perennial herbaceous flowering plant in the carrot family Apiaceae. H. mantegazzianum is also known as cartwheel-flower, giant cow parsley, giant cow parsnip, or hogsbane. In New Zealand, it is also sometimes called wild parsnip (not to be confused with Pastinaca sativa) or wild rhubarb.
Giant hogweed is native to the western Caucasus region of Eurasia. It was introduced to Britain as an ornamental plant in the 19th century, and has also spread to other areas in Western Europe, the United States, and Canada. Its close relatives, Sosnowsky's hogweed and Persian hogweed, have similarly spread to other parts of Europe.

The Prodigy are an English electronic dance music group formed by Liam Howlett in 1990 in Braintree, Essex. Along with Fatboy Slim and The Chemical Brothers, as well as other acts, members of The Prodigy have been credited as pioneers of the big beat genre which achieved mainstream popularity in the 1990s and 2000s. They have sold over 25 million records worldwide.
The group's brand of big beat music makes use of various styles ranging from rave, hardcore techno, industrial and breakbeat in the early 1990s to electronic rock with punk vocal elements in later times. The current members include Liam Howlett (composer/keyboards), Keith Flint (dancer/vocalist) and Maxim (MC/vocalist). Leeroy Thornhill (dancer/very occasional live keyboards) was a member of the band from 1990 to 2000, as was a female dancer/vocalist called Sharky who left the group during their early period. The Prodigy first emerged on the underground rave scene in the early 1990s, and have since then achieved immense popularity and worldwide renown.
Some of their most popular songs include 'Fire', 'Charly', 'Out of Space', 'No Good (Start the Dance)', 'Voodoo People', 'Poison', 'Firestarter', 'Breathe', 'Smack My Bitch Up', 'Omen', 'Spitfire', 'Invaders Must Die' and 'Warrior's Dance'.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5653993839 - 'The name Lymm, is of Celtic origins, means a 'place of running water' and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre. The Bridgewater canal (a rare one with no locks), runs through the village diagonally to the original stream.
Lymm village centre is a designated conservation area, notable for its historic buildings, both listed and unlisted. These include the French-style terracotta former Lymm Town Hall (currently unlisted)
Oughtrington Hall &
Lodge, formerly owned by a cadet branch of the Leigh family and now Lymm High School
Lymm Hall, a former Domville family residence
Foxley Hall, home to a cadet branch of the ancient Booth family, before ownership passed to the Carlisle family is no longer standing, but fustian cutting cottages on Booth's Hill Road and Arley Grove do survive. The parish church of St Peter's Church, Oughtrington is an example of Gothic Revival architecture.
St Mary's Church, Lymm is next to Lymm Dam. By 1850 an earlier 14th century building was in disrepair, and the Newcastle architect John Dobson was commissioned to rebuild it. The 1521 tower was retained and raised, but the additional stonework meant that the tower had to be rebuilt in 1887.
Lymm's village cross, known simply as 'The Cross', is a Grade I listed structure.
This is an infrared shot taken with a 720nm adapted SLR. It is more convenient to use than using a Hoya R72 for IR. This spring day was heavy in infrared.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4604789614 - 'The common Bluebell, (Hyacinthoides non-scripta to be precise) grows from bulbs and can be expected about four weeks after daffadils in Britain. By the time they appear, frosts should be receeding and days getting noticably warmer.
Other common names for it include auld man's bell, bluebell, calverkeys, culverkeys, English bluebell, jacinth, ring-o'-bells, wilde hyacint, and wood bells (probably as they appear in shaded woodland almost spontainiously.
Bees are a favourite to pollinate these plants. Their black seeds may survive long periods of time emerging after several years' absence if suitable conditions recur. The seedlings can flower in two years from seed and as a result, bluebells can quickly spread to form a carpet in suitable conditions.
In spring, many north-western European woods are covered by dense carpets of this flower, these are commonly referred to as 'bluebell woods'. In my youth that was the common name for a large wood beside the railway commuter line between Hadfield and Manchester. In spring it did produce a carpet of blue.
The presence of large numbers of bluebells is often used as an indicator species to identify ancient woodland, particularly in the East of England and Lincolnshire. It is estimated that 70% of all common bluebells are found in Great Britain.
In the UK the common bluebell is a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Landowners are prohibited from removing common bluebells on their land for sale and it is a criminal offence to remove the bulbs of wild common bluebells. This legislation was strengthened in 1998 under Schedule 8 of the Act making any trade in wild common bluebell bulbs or seeds an offence. So respect the little blue fellows!

It has recently been populated with traffic information signs displaying occasionally useful information and 'fillers' such as 'Don't Hog The Middle Lane', 'Dont Drink And Drive', 'Say No To Drugs' and other subliminal messages. It is always unerving to see a yellow sign up ahead as the density of chemical plants between Lymm and Chester (Stanlow etc) makes it quite likely for chemical spillages etc on this section.

The plough like many in centuries past turn over the upper layer of the soil, bringing fresh nutrients to the surface, while burying weeds and the remains of previous crops, allowing them to break down. It also aerates the soil, and allows it to hold moisture better. In modern use, a ploughed field is typically left to dry out, and is then harrowed before planting.
Also all the insect life comes to the surface which makes it an attractive prospect for gulls and other bird life. Interestingly the night time constallation of the plough (or big dipper as some call it) is at this time of the year slipping down in the night sky out of sight. By the time wheat or maize is sown here and sprouting, in the longer light evenings we will be missing it and its other easily spotted companion, Orion.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4414472726 - 'Ahh, a nice pot of Fairtrade tea or fancy coffee and a freshly baked cake. What more could you ask for on a Saturday morning when taking your books back to Lymm library in Davies Way.
The Sanctuary cafe is between the library and Brookfield Roads' United Reformed Church (Thomas Risley Church) and can be reached from either. Its thankfully christian with a small c, even nicer when you grew up as a card carrying fallen catholic like myself.
They are usually open from about 9.30am where a fresh bacon butty (or Lymm folk may well call them Bacon Sarnies - I dont know) is a good way to start the day. They will toast it too if you ask. There is a corner for kids to play if you have a small one in tow. Lawrence the gaffer does a good job and the volunteers will always go that extra mile for you.
They have some fairtrade nic-naks on offer usually and its a nice change from the other village alternatives. A nice it of sanctuary now my ears had settled down from the night before www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/4409614624/

Pomanders are wonderfully fragrant, natural room and closet fresheners. They are popular at Christmas for citrus fruit. A knitting needle is used to create holes in a series and the whole clove can be inserted.
It would be interesting to know who added them all to a tree at the west of the Dam. Please add a comment if you know or have any more information.

Entertainers like this may have travelled in with a circus when it came to town and set up in parks and public places.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4107135884 - 'In the year 920 (or was it 923) King Edward the Elder founded a cyty here and called it Thelwall. Written on the Pickering Arms is that inscription.
Still reassuringly serving nice food and ale at the bottom of Bell lane. Or it was today anyway.
Thelwall is plagued with many stories of ghosts www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/4103283717/ , as many of the old buildings remain in the area. Many stories of ghost's are found in the older area of Thelwall. Many of the sightings are usually from the Local Pub: 'the Little Manor'. However there has been stories of witches at the old white house with the well on the outskirts of Thelwall.
The church of England All Saints Church is just further north of the pub www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3691489296/
A fortified city was established at Thelwall in 923 during the reign of King Edward the Elder, which is mentioned in two very early sources, including the Anglo Saxon Chronicle:
Kynge Edwarde made a cite at Thelewall in [th]e northe parte of [th]e Marches, nye the water of Mersee, where he put a certeyne knyghtes.
A.D. 923. This year went King Edward with an army, late in the harvest, to Thelwall
and ordered the borough to be repaired, and inhabited, and manned. And he ordered another army also from the population of Mercia, the while he sat there to go to Manchester in Northumbria, to repair and to man it. This year died Archbishop Plegmund
and King Reynold won York.
Earthwork remains of a embankment, possibly part of these fortifications, has been found on the grounds of Chaigeley School. These remains are an English Heritage National Monument.

WDCC – Discover the hidden Lymm – Monday 25th June 2007
NB: In the event of very wet weather, the meeting will be held in the GYCA bar, with an opportunity to see images shot on the trail below. The route is interesting at different times of day, so if you cannot make it on the night, don’t worry! Bring your images taken on the members work night 9th July with any of your other favourite pictures.
Try to find an unusual angle on what you see &
try to be surprised by the everyday!
The route can be joined at the usual meeting point of the GYCA / Bellhouse club in Grappenhall or if more convenient at 7.30pm in Lymm.
7pm Depart GYCA car park (in shared or own cars).
From the GYCA turn left into bellhouse Lane, then left to the traffic lights at the junction of A50/A56. Turn right towards Lymm.
1.After approx ¼ mile take a left into Stanton Road. At the bottom turn right into Thelwall New Road, stopping at All Saints church yard on the right. If you have a digital camera and a deep red or hoya R72 filter, a good place for some infra-red photography.
2.From the church continue along road to Lymm. Note the Old post office, Pickering Arms and lettering on side about ‘The city called Thelwall’. Continue until the junction with the A56 and take a left into Stockport Road, then immediate left towards Statham.
3.Note the M6 road bridges that pass overhead. Continue passing the hotel on the left with climbing plants on the front. Another good spot for an infra-red shot. Continue along road and turn right after about ½ mile into Star lane. Continue to the top and turn left towards Lymm on A56/Stockport Road.
7.30pm Arrive at Lymm Dam. Park either in the Church Inn, next to Church or along the road beside Lymm Dam.
4.From the road, take the path to the right of the Dam to get a view of the dam framed with trees from the bank. Walk along the railings below the road and find the gameboy and the penguins with guns. Notice the bulrushes and grasses at the front of the dam. Don’t forget to put on a longer lens for the ducks.
5.Walk up the road/hill to St Mary’s church. Note the cross on the entrance. A polarising filter would come in handy for the tower or its stone carvings. Note the stone angels and squirrels up on the sides of the building.
6.In the graveyard find at least one cross and one carved flower in the gravestones. Some interesting door handles and locks can be seen in the graveyard &
around the buildings.
7.Cross the road and walk down towards Grappenhall on the A56/Stockport Road until you find the steps down to the Dingle. If you reach Brookfield Rd you have gone too far! Note the graffiti on the buildings behind the padlocked gates at the sides of the main pathway. Several trees have been felled beside the path. Spot the new fern growth and the purple foxgloves.
8.At the bottom of the dingle is the lower mill pool. Note the cottages reflecting in the water (as they should be illuminated by the evening light) and wild flowers adjacent to water.
9.Turn left into Eagle Brow and then right past the Lymm Chippy. Spot one of the flags on view. Continue under the canal bridge and join the canal bank on the left. If you haven’t already done so, you will probably spot some ducks. Keep left along the canal towards the road bridge. Notice Bridgewater cottage on the left &
its many plants &
flowers. Miss the erotic topiary at your peril!
10.Turn left before the canal bridge along by the old canal cottages. Note the year the cottages were built above the lintel.
11.From the cottages, turn right over canal bridge towards the historic Lymm Cross &
the main street of shops (called The Cross). There are a number of notable details on the cross including the sundial with its slogan ‘Save Time’. The village cross in Lymm known as 'The Cross' is the only Grade I listed structure in the Borough of Warrington and is thought to date back to Saxon times.
12.Turn back towards the canal, (without re-crossing the canal bridge) on the opposite side to Bridgewater cottage for a good view of the cottage and canal boats. Try misting up your lens, or adding a filter for a more surreal shot of the canal &
boats. Don’t forget the reflections, often more interesting than some of the boats!
13.Walk back up through the dingle to back to car for a drink back at the GYCA after 9.30pm. Forty shots taken following this walk will be available in the bar to view.

The infra-red effect occurs in the Fuji S7000 camera as a result of the Hoya R72 Infra red filter fitted on the front of the lens, using the adapter. The local independent shops of the village can be seen behind the cross.
The summer trees come up as light blue under the filter.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JP5RXB - Lymm is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Warrington, Cheshire, England, which incorporates the hamlets of Booths Hill, Broomedge, Church Green, Deansgreen, Heatley, Heatley Heath, Little Heatley, Oughtrington, Reddish, Rushgreen and Statham.
Morris dancing[7] continues to feature within the village with Lymm Morris dancers frequently performing during Rushbearing[8] and at the various annual village festivals including the Lymm May Queen Festival, Lymm Festival and Lymm Dickensian Festival.
In 2017, Lymm was voted as one of the 'Best Places to Live' according to The Times and The Sunday Times list. In 2023, the village was voted as one of Britains 'Most Desirable Towns' according to The Daily Telegraph

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DE9AP0 - The Bridgewater Canal connects Runcorn, Manchester and Leigh, in North West England.
Often considered to be the first true canal in England, it required the construction of an aqueduct to cross the River Irwell, one of the first of its kind.
