Protecting public health by improving air quality while helping to meet our climate change emission reduction targets
Low Emission Zones (LEZs) are a moving traffic contravention, preventing the most polluting vehicles driving within an area, which improves air quality and helps to protect public health.
LEZs operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year round (including all Public Holidays such as Christmas Day and Boxing Day).
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are linked to local and national vehicle licencing databases, to monitor all vehicles driving in a LEZ. They will detect vehicles which do not comply with the emission standards. Stationary vehicles are not subject to LEZ restrictions.
Scottish LEZs will be enforced by Penalty Charge Notice (PCN), there is no facility for pre-payment.? When a non-compliant vehicle is detected driving within a LEZ a PCN is issued to the registered keeper of that vehicle.?
Emission Standards
A vehicle may only drive within a LEZ if it meets the specified emission standards.

It all started when it was realised that Victoria Primary School in Newhaven on the northern outskirts of Edinburgh needed to expand and the decision was taken to build a new school.
Now we're almost three years down the line and the dream of converting the site containing the Victorian building into a brand new intergenerational centre for the whole community to enjoy, is nearing completion.
We've consulted with the community to find out what they want.
We've set up a SCIO, The Heart of Newhaven Community SCIO SCO49919 a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation. Constitution is here.
We have a board of trustees. We have members who will take the decisions moving into the future. See your board and consultants here.
We've passed the Community Asset Transfer test with Edinburgh City Council and been given permission to purchase the site. The Scottish Land fund have given us the Funds to buy the building.
NEWHAVEN IS A COMMUNITY WITH A HEART
Pulsating with energy is Victoria Primary School, full of children who in 2022 moved across Lindsay Road to a new site to pursue dreams for the future.
This iconic building and its annexe deserve be an asset for the whole community of Newhaven ?young and old, long-time residents and those newly moved here: everybody who wants to have a place to enjoy activities that can't yet find a space in Newhaven.
Newhaven has a distinct identity.
Its rapidly increasing population and range of activities is crying out for a focal point to express our sense of community life, especially to help those in greatest need of care and well-being.
The Heart of Newhaven was chosen as a name for the proposed centre, and the campaign to keep this building for the community, because:
it is in the centre of 'Greater Newhaven' (old and new combined)
because a community space for everyone is what keeps the community heart in Newhaven for the future.

HMY Britannia was built at the shipyard of John Brown & Co. Ltd in Clydebank, Dunbartonshire. She was launched by Queen Elizabeth II on 16 April 1953, and commissioned on 11 January 1954. The ship was designed with three masts: a 133-foot (41 m) foremast, a 139-foot (42 m) mainmast, and a 118-foot (36 m) mizzenmast. The top aerial on the foremast and the top 20 feet (6.1 m) of the mainmast were hinged to allow the ship to pass under bridges.
Britannia was designed to be converted into a hospital ship in time of war, although this capability was never used. In the event of nuclear war, it was intended for the Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, to take refuge aboard Britannia off the north-west coast of Scotland

New Edinburgh distillery promises to be the ?biggest tourist attraction built in Leith in decades'
An innovative new Edinburgh distillery is marking an historic moment as it prepares to open. Stills have been installed at Port of Leith Distillery ? the UK's first vertical distillery ? which has been described as the biggest tourist attraction to be built in Leith for decades. With a projected 25,000 visitors expected in its first year, the distillery is due to open in summer 2023 at the site of an old biscuit factory.
The installation of the two hand-crafted copper stills (a 7,000 litre wash still and a 5,000 litre spirit still) from The Speyside Copper Works in Elgin is the latest milestone for the ?12m nine-storey distillery, which will offer tours and tastings, as well as a top floor mezzanine bar with panoramic views of Leith and wider Edinburgh. Owners say the attraction is creating up to 50 long term local jobs, with the capacity to produce one million bottles of whisky a year, through its energy-saving gravitational distilling system.
Ian Stirling, co-founder of Port of Leith Distillery, said: For much of the 19th and 20th century, Leith was the unofficial capital of Scotch Whisky - making it the perfect place to build a new industrial landmark like the Port of Leith Distillery
an honest and modern piece of architecture that reflects our new and innovative approach to production. Installing our stills brings us one step closer to our summer distillery opening and welcoming tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world to come and experience a UK first.
Port of Leith Distillery is the latest long term investment in Leith by co-owners and lifelong friends Ian Stirling and Paddy Fletcher, following the opening of the new Lind & Lime Gin Distillery in May 2022, a brand they launched in 2018 from an industrial unit.

It is the second biggest racecourse in Scotland (the first being Ayr) and is the fourteenth biggest in the UK. In 2016, Musselburgh staged 28 fixtures. It was officially known as Edinburgh Racecourse, and referred to as such in the English press, until the beginning of 1996 but was widely referred to as Musselburgh in Scotland long before that[5] and was widely referred to as Musselburgh in the racing pages of Scottish newspapers.
The course offers both flat racing and National Hunt meetings (though it only introduced jumping in 1987) and is 2 km long. In the middle of the course is a nine-hole golf course, Musselburgh Links, dating from at least 1672. The Royal Musselburgh Golf Club was founded there in 1774.
The racecourse itself sits on Musselburgh common good land. It is situated on the eastern side of the town, less than a mile from the A1 and two miles from the Edinburgh City Bypass. A road bridge over the Esk gives access to the course on race days only
the rest of the time, the gates are kept closed.
History
The first races in Musselburgh took place in 1777 under the auspices of the Royal Caledonian Hunt. Between 1789 and 1816, race meetings were held on the sands at Leith, although some races did still take place in the town. In 1816, they returned permanently to Musselburgh, to a course that had been laid out for them by the town council. The Hunt were so pleased with the new course that they distributed 50 guineas amongst the town's poor

The Lord Reid Building, behind 142 High Street, is within an enclosed court and accessed via a pend known as New Assembly Close. It houses the Faculty's Consultation Centre and is named after James Scott Cumberland Reid, Lord Advocate from 1941-45 and Dean of Faculty from 1945-48. He was also an MP.
Such was his ability, Lord Reid was appointed a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, a judge in the House of Lords, straight from the Bar, without any intervening judicial experience. He went on to win acclaim as one of most outstanding judges of the 20th Century.
The building is Category A listed and dates from the early 19th Century, although there is an older section which had been the Edinburgh Assembly Rooms and the King's Arms Tavern. Designed by James Gillespie Graham, it was the head office of the Commercial Bank of Scotland, and survived the 1824 Great Fire of Edinburgh. In 1894, it was taken over by the Scottish National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children and was a children's shelter until 1973.
Next, the building was home to the Edinburgh Wax Museum, the only waxworks in Scotland, drawing 230,000 visitors a year at its peak. In the late 1980s, the Faculty bought 142 as it has become known to Advocates. The building was opened officially by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1994.

The Lord Reid Building, behind 142 High Street, is within an enclosed court and accessed via a pend known as New Assembly Close. It houses the Faculty's Consultation Centre and is named after James Scott Cumberland Reid, Lord Advocate from 1941-45 and Dean of Faculty from 1945-48. He was also an MP.
Such was his ability, Lord Reid was appointed a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, a judge in the House of Lords, straight from the Bar, without any intervening judicial experience. He went on to win acclaim as one of most outstanding judges of the 20th Century.
The building is Category A listed and dates from the early 19th Century, although there is an older section which had been the Edinburgh Assembly Rooms and the King's Arms Tavern. Designed by James Gillespie Graham, it was the head office of the Commercial Bank of Scotland, and survived the 1824 Great Fire of Edinburgh. In 1894, it was taken over by the Scottish National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children and was a children's shelter until 1973.
Next, the building was home to the Edinburgh Wax Museum, the only waxworks in Scotland, drawing 230,000 visitors a year at its peak. In the late 1980s, the Faculty bought 142 as it has become known to Advocates. The building was opened officially by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1994.

This was named from the fact that one of the copies of the National Covenant was teken here from Greyfriars Kirkyard to collect signatures from other residents in the city. The copy was on display in one of the houses in the lane, and signatures were gathered on it.

Construction began in June 2008, and after encountering delays it opened on 31 May 2014. The scheme had an initial estimated cost of ?375 million in 2003, but by May 2008, when contracts were signed, the cost had risen to ?521 million. The final cost after delays was ?776 million.
After running for two years, the scheme had achieved pre-tax profitability (excluding maintenance and infrastructure costs) and exceeded the original ridership targets. It has run at an operating loss since 2018 (e.g. ????9.4 million in 2018). On 14 March 2019, Edinburgh Council voted to approve the extension of the existing line from York Place to Newhaven. It was formed by dumping around 1,501,000 cartloads of earth excavated from the foundations of the New Town into Nor Loch which was drained in 1765 and forms today's Princes Street Gardens.
History
The construction of the Earthen Mound, as it was originally called, was first proposed in 1783 by residents of the Lawnmarket to improve connection to Princes Street (which was then built only from St Andrew Square to Hanover Street) in correct anticipation of the need for such a new route. It was extended over the years until by 1830 it was macadamised and landscaped so that it appeared more or less complete. When the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway was extended to Waverley station in 1846, tunnels were driven through the Mound to allow access east to west.

Some of Edinburgh's most notable buildings and institutions have their premises on the Mound, including the National Gallery of Scotland, the Royal Scottish Academy, the spires of the University of Edinburgh's New College, the General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland, the elegant domed Headquarters of the commercially owned Bank of Scotland, and its museum, Museum on the Mound.
The Mound is a busy, if fairly steep, thoroughfare taking traffic to and from Princes Street in the New Town to the Royal Mile in the Old Town. The lower end, or 'Foot' of the Mound is a few metres' walk from the Princes Street tram stop. Due to its raised elevation, the Mound commands expansive views over Princes Street and the New Town of Edinburgh and towards Calton Hill. An 'electric blanket' was installed under the surface of the roadway of the mound to keep this clear of ice and snow in 1959. It is no longer operational but was one of the first of its type

Now that these subsidies are being discontinued the question becomes whether solar PV in Scotland can stand on its own two feet. With capacity factors of only 8-9% and seasonal generation ranges exceeding a factor of twelve, Scotland is in fact one of the worst places in Europe for solar, despite what its supporters claim.
Articles telling us what a great country Scotland is for solar PV continue to appear. The latest was this one from PV Magazine, linked to in Blowout Week 242. It had this to say:

According to the BBC solar energy works so exceptionally well at high latitudes that it could power all Scottish electricity supplies. The BBC even provided supporting evidence:
Data from WeatherEnergy showed that sunshine in Edinburgh in April (2015) generated more electricity than is used in an average home ? a total of 113%. In Aberdeen the figure was 111%, 106% in Glasgow and 104% in Inverness.
But while Scotland's solar potential, which according to Herald Scotland is staggering ?.
Rooftop solar provides an exceptionally cost-effective, popular, community-based solution with the potential for a staggering 40GW of rooftop capacity across Scotland.

Solar deployment on Scottish rooftops lags far behind both national and European deployment. One of the reasons for this is the particularly harsh tax treatment of rooftop solar on Scottish businesses and public sector buildings, including schools and hospitals.

It was announced in Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne's 2013 budget speech, and was described as the biggest government intervention in the housing market since the Right to Buy scheme of the 1980s. It is an extension of a previous programme called FirstBuy that was aimed solely at first-time buyers. Help to Buy has itself been expanded and extended.

Help to Buy: Equity Loans: Buyers contribute a 5% deposit, the government provides an equity loan for up to 20% of the property value (40% within London), and buyers must provide the remaining funds themselves, typically from a mortgage. Available only for new-build under a certain amount (e.g. less than ?600,000 in England, ?300,000 in Wales)
the loan is interest-free for the first five years. This is the most high-profile of the schemes, and is often referred to simply as Help to Buy. Also known as phase one of Help to Buy.

The five-acre site, at the Midlothian campus in Dalkeith, features more than 2,500 photo-voltaic panels.
Its designed and installed by energy company SSE - would cut its fuel bills.
It will also help to train engineering students and to research the impact on electrical output of environmental factors such as the weather.

But we have produced a fantastic project here, he said.
Up to this point, Scotland produces 500 kW of solar PV energy. With this project we have now trebled that.
Richard Chandler, SSE's head of Green Deal and Energy Solutions, said: The Solar Meadow will generate enough energy to power 170 homes.
It's also a fine example of how industry and education can work well together.
This project will bring benefits to the college, its students and the wider community as well as further strengthening Scotland's renewable energy resources.
Alana Beaton, from Inverness, who is studying electrical engineering at the college, said she was hoping the college would be able to use the project as an outdoor classroom to help her get a job in the industry.
Having the solar meadow available means that we're going to have hands-on experience with green energy, she said.
We know fossil fuels are slowly running out, so green energy is the way forward.
Myth busting
The site, at what used to be the former Jewel and Esk college until the merger which created Edinburgh College six months ago, is one of the most northerly solar power installations in Europe.
Research there will focus on the interplay between biodiversity and solar technology. To help that the entire site will be planted with wild grasses and flowers.
Professor Tinsley said: This is a significant research facility, and we've had conversations with various universities on how we use it, and attract funding for future projects.

It shows two cornucopia (horns of plenty) spilling money (or maybe gold) into two vessels, around the motto Thrift is Blessing. This choice of words might suggest to customers that by depositing their money in the bank they will be rewarded with rich returns. However, it is actually a quotation from Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice - Shylock says it as part of a defence of his profession of money lending.
The mosaic is made of glass smalti. The cornucopia and motto appear over a pleated cloth, with a blue background. Notice how several shades of green have been used to give the effect of the folds in the fabric.

John Napier is best known as the inventor of logarithms. He also invented the so-called Napier's bones and made common the use of the decimal point in arithmetic and mathematics.
Napier's birthplace, Merchiston Tower in Edinburgh, Scotland, is now part of the facilities of Edinburgh Napier University. After his death from the effects of gout, Napier's remains were buried in St Cuthbert's Church, Edinburgh.

Few of the present buildings pre-date the Lang Siege of the 16th century, when the medieval defences were largely destroyed by artillery bombardment. The most notable exceptions are St Margaret's Chapel from the early 12th century, which is regarded as the oldest building in Edinburgh,[3] the Royal Palace and the early-16th-century Great Hall, although the interiors have been much altered from the mid-Victorian period onwards. The castle also houses the Scottish regalia, known as the Honours of Scotland and is the site of the Scottish National War Memorial and the National War Museum of Scotland. The British Army is still responsible for some parts of the castle, although its presence is now largely ceremonial.

First mentioned in the Registrum Magni Sigilii Regum Scotorum (1363) as the street called Newbygging [new buildings] under the castle, the Grassmarket was, from 1477, one of Edinburgh's main market places, a part of which was given over to the sale of horse and cattle (the name apparently deriving from livestock grazing in pens beyond its western end).
Daniel Defoe, who visited Edinburgh in the 1720s, reports the place being used for two open air markets: the Grass-market and the Horse-market. Of the West Bow at the north-east corner, considerably altered in the Victorian period, he wrote, This street, which is called the Bow, is generally full of wholesale traders, and those very considerable dealers in iron, pitch, tar, oil, hemp, flax, linseed, painters' colours, dyers, drugs and woods, and such like heavy goods, and supplies country shopkeepers, as our wholesale dealers in England do. And here I may say, is a visible face of trade

Before the creation of Victoria Street and Johnston Terrace in the early 1800s, the steep, awkward incline of the old West Bow was the only feasible passage for those wishing to access the Lawnmarket and Edinburgh Castle from the west.
The old West Bow was a precipitous, narrow Z-shaped street linking the Grassmarket with Castlehill. Its path is somewhat preserved today by the steps which cut through Victoria Street towards the Upper Bow. Prior to the 19th century it was considered to be one of the most important roads in Edinburgh, despite its reputation as one of the most difficult to negotiate if travelling by carriage.
Many of the oldest buildings in the city were contained along the old West Bow. An abundance of timber-fronted houses had sprung up over the centuries, many of them resembling upside-down pyramids due to the manner in which the floors increasingly protruded out as they progressed upwards.
As such, the distance between the top floors of some of the houses on either side of the street was so little that it is said neighbours could enjoy ?the pleasure of tea drinking, without the trouble of leaving their respective abodes'.
The old West Bow was radically transformed between 1829-34 as part of town planner Thomas Hamilton's 1827 Improvement Act which was set up to provide better approaches into the Old Town from the west and south. The eventual design featured a gentle, curved link from the Grassmarket up to the newly-created George IV Bridge. It was originally named Bow Street, remaining so until 1837 when the arrival to the British throne of Queen Victoria was suitably honoured by the city.

A grand building at the corner of the High Street and George IV Bridge in central Edinburgh, Midlothian County Buildings is today an anachronism, the City of Edinburgh having been administratively carved off from its Midlothian hinterland in 1975.
This B-listed edifice was completed in 1905 by architect J. Macintyre Henry (1852 - 1929). Richly decorated pediments face north and west, supported on Ionic columns. On the rear elevation, facing St. Giles Kirk, is a notable frieze by W. Birnie Rhind (1853 - 1933), with reliefs representing the industries of Midlothian at the time
agriculture, fishing and mining. It has been criticised as a pastiche, 'weakly Classical' or 'flabby Palladian', but it acknowledges its historical surroundings which is more than could be said for its extension, built opposite in 1968 and connected by a tunnel running beneath George IV Bridge. This extension was by Sir Robert Matthew (1906-75) in his modern-vernacular style but has now thankfully been demolished.
After 1975 the building became the Lothian Regional Council Chambers but, after Lothian Region was dismantled in 1996, the building no longer had a purpose. It was taken on by Edinburgh City Council and, with the need for a temporary home for the new Scottish Parliament in 1999, it was pressed into use as office space and the visitor centre until 2004.
Inside there is a marble pilastered entrance hall, with a fine plasterwork ceiling. Beyond is grand stairway with a wrought-iron balustrade featuring winged ladies. On the first floor is a galleried and arcaded hall and the fine tunnel-vaulted council chamber, with walnut panelling and Corinthian pilasters.

This is largely due to such practitioners as Steve Chappell, Jack Sobon, and Tedd Benson, who studied old plans and techniques and revived a long-neglected technique. Once a handcrafted skill passed down, timber-frame construction has now been modernized with the help of modern industrial tools such as the CNC machines. These machines and mass-production techniques have assisted growth and made for more affordable frames and shorter lead-times for projects.
Timber-framed structures differ from conventional wood-framed buildings in several ways. Timber framing uses fewer, larger wooden members, commonly timbers in the range of 15 to 30 cm (6 to 12), while common wood framing uses many more timbers with dimensions usually in the 5 to 25 cm (2 to 10) range. The methods of fastening the frame members also differ. In conventional framing, the members are joined using nails or other mechanical fasteners, whereas timber framing uses the traditional mortice and tenon or more complex joints that are usually fastened using only wooden pegs.[13] Modern complex structures and timber trusses often incorporate steel joinery such as gusset plates, for both structural and architectural purposes.
Recently, it has become common practice to enclose the timber structure entirely in manufactured panels such as SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels). Although the timbers can only be seen from inside the building when so enclosed, construction is less complex and insulation is greater than in traditional timber building.

It was constructed from 1894?1897 by Sir William Arrol & Co., which company is also noted for construction of the Forth Bridge. The design of the ornamentation was by the City architect of the time, Robert Morham.
The foundation stone was laid on 25 May 1896 by the then Lord Provost (the Rt. Hon Andrew McDonald, with Masonic ceremonial. A medal[3] was struck commemorating the opening of the bridge on 15 September 1897.[4] The medal shows a view of the bridge with trains underneath and on the obverse a bust of the by then knighted Sir Andrew McDonald, Lord Provost.[5]

Situated on the bridge is a war memorial, by sculptor William Birnie Rhind which memorialises soldiers of the King's Own Scottish Borderers killed in campaigns between 1878 and 1902.[6]
At the southern end of the bridge (where it meets the Royal Mile and South Bridge, in the Edinburgh's Old Town) are substantial buildings whose main entrances are at carriageway level but which also have entrances in the valley below. While on a great photo walk with good drinking friend and botanical polyglot Stephen Buchan in Humbie woods, a quiet oasis a few miles south of Pencaitland, East Lotian, Scotland the other week, this track was bouncing around in my head.
Portugal. The Man is an American experimental rock band based in Portland, Oregon, but originally from Wasilla, Alaska. The group released their first two albums with Fearless Records.
This is a track from their 4th album, The Satanic Satanist.
Released on July 21, 2009 it was originally named The Satanic Satanist of the Majestic Majesty, the album title was later shortened and an acoustic counterpart entitled The Majestic Majesty was released. The Satanic Satanist is themed around memories and stories from singer John Gourley's growing up in the state of Alaska. The album was recorded with the help of record producer Paul Q. Kolderie of Pixies and Radiohead fame, and it was the band's first time recording an album with pre-production.
Humbie is a hamlet and rural parish in East Lothian, Scotland. It lies in the south-west of the county, approximately 10 miles south-west of Haddington and 15 miles south-east of Edinburgh. Humbie as we know it today was formed as the result of the union between Keith Marischal and Keith Hundeby in 1618. There is not much of a village, more a scattered hamlet.
The 'T-Plan' Parish Church was rebuilt in 1800 and Gothicized in 1866 by David Bryce. The 'chancel' was added in 1932. Memorials in the churchyard include a heraldic tablet of the Borthwicks of Whitburgh of the early 17th century, and another monument to James Scriven of Ploughlandhill who died in 1668. The path down to the ample woodland winds down from the churchyard.

Alexander Nisbet incorrectly states that Adam Hepburn of Kirklandhill purchased Humbie and Hartside from James Lawson of Humbie in 1586. They were, in fact, disponed by John Lawson of Humbie to Hepburn by resignation dated 25 May 1637 Mr Adam Hepburn married Agnes, daughter to Henry Foulis of Colinton and his wife Margaret, daughter of James Haldane of Gleneagles. His son and successor was Sir Adam Hepburn, Lord Humbie, a Senator of the College of Justice, who married on 30 December 1629 Agnes, daughter to George Foulis of Ravelston, Master of the Mint. Their daughter Jean married John Cockburn of Ormiston, and they were parents of Adam Cockburn of Ormiston, Lord Justice Clerk. Humbie was retained by the Hepburns until the death without issue of James Hepburn of Humbie on 2 December 1820.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HTJD - Calocera viscosa, commonly known as the yellow stagshorn, is a jelly fungus, a member of the Dacrymycetales, an order of fungi characterized by their unique tuning fork basidia.
It has bright orange, yellow or occasionally white branching basidiocarps, which are somewhat gelatinous in texture and slimy to the touch (hence the specific name). It is relatively large for a jelly fungus, and can reach up to ten centimetres in height.[2] It is widespread and common, and its bright colour makes it stand out in its habitat. It grows on decaying conifer wood, typically stumps and roots, although this may not be obvious if the wood is covered in leaf litter. It fruits throughout the year, but is most commonly seen in autumn.
It is not poisonous, but its tough gelatinous texture and nondescript taste and odour make it unattractive as a food. Its striking colour has led to it being used as a garnish on occasion, however

The Dome is a bar, restaurant and conference complex and was originally the long since defunct Commercial Bank of Scotland's HQ. At Christmas the exterior on George Street and the interior are both lavishly decorated. As you enter the building there is a distinct whiff of cinnamon.

Acclaimed as one of the great railway hotels, it originally boasted 300 bedrooms and 52 bathrooms. It was later renamed The Balmoral ? which means majestic dwelling in Gaelic.
Hotel porters in red jackets used to meet guests off the train at Waverley Station, taking them into a lift and whisking them from the station hall to the reception desk in the hotel.
Our notable guests have included Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Paul McCartney, Edward Heath and Harold Wilson. The Queen Mother was a regular for lunch. Her favourite dish was plain roast lamb.

Black Mountain is a Canadian psychedelic rock-band composed of Stephen McBean, Amber Webber, Matt Camirand, Jeremy Schmidt and Joshua Wells. They have recently really grown on me, particularly this, one of the gentler tracks on the latest album Wilderness Heart.
By day, three members of the band work for Insite, an organization that meets the basic living requirements of the chronically poor, drug addicted and mentally ill in a part of Vancouver.
A BBC review described it thus: 'Black Mountain's third album represents the finest yield so far from the Vancouver band\u2019s relentless harvesting of rock and folk's 70s heyday. Wilderness Heart refuses to dive into unfamiliar territory, instead expertly blending heavy rock, smoky blues and finger-picked acoustic guitars across an album of tantalisingly layered songs. Rather than adhering to type, Black Mountain now have a catalogue of songs that respect and rival their influences.'
I can only agree, having played the album to death now for about 7 weeks. Check it out, tell 'em I sent you :-)

Princess St in the city of Edinburgh can be a magnet for the homeless to pick up a few coins and the odd discarded half eaten sandwich, can of Tenants Super or BK whopper. Jenners is one of the top pitches. Its now owned by house of Fraser. Known as the 'Harrods of the North', it has held a Royal Warrant since 1911, and was visited by Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of its 150th anniversary in 1988. In recent years (2004) it changed its vision statement from its goal to 'be the most exciting department store outside of London' to 'Confidently Independent'.
Its probably no coincidence that this chap has choosen the 'Home, thats our department' window to bed down with his canine companion.
Up at the student run Bedlam Theatre there is a bench that is dedicated to the memory of a student who died a few years ago. The concrete bench is raised about two feet on a wall on the front of the theatre. From there you get a beautiful view all the way up North Bridge, the New College dome in the distance.
Tramps know it as 'the bench'. A central point to meet, watch the world go by, share tips and drinks, but not sheltered to sleep at night. As the colder weather draws in and other budget cuts bite its a harder time than ever in town. Although big cities attract the homeless, facilities are thin on the ground. Increasingly the 'Big Society' is being mentioned to replace trimmed initiatives and increasingly volunteers. This city can afford to waste over \u00a3600 million on trams solving a problem that did not exist, but little on supporting some of the vulnerable.

This is a track that for me always conjours up the old 'Top Rank' Bingo clubs of 1970's and 80's Britain. Another John Peel backed track that helped me to appreciate reggae.
The young Jamaican singers Althea Forrest (17), and Donna Reid (18), caused a surprise with their one-off reggae hit single, 'Uptown Top Ranking'. It was produced by Joe Gibbs using a re-recording of the 'riddim' of the 1967 Alton Ellis' song 'I'm Still In Love', which had already been re-popularised in the 1970s by Marcia Aitken's cover 'I'm Still In Love With You Boy' and the deejay track 'Three Piece Suit' by Trinity, to which 'Uptown' was an 'answer record'. The single's UK release was on the Lightning label.
'Uptown Top Ranking' reached number one in the UK Singles Chart in February 1978, after early championing by BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, but had only one week at the chart summit. The lyrics were written by the duo and Errol Thompson. Althea &
Donna thus at that time became the youngest female duo to reach the pinnacle of the UK chart.
Its been covered many times since. A sample of the 'No Pop, No Style' refrain from the record was used and formed part of the lyrics to Pop Will Eat Itself's (PWEI) 1991 single, 'X, Y &
Zee'.

Bingo or Housey Housey as some pensioners still call it is a gambling game of unknown origin. Players mark off numbers on a ticket as they are randomly called out, in order to achieve a winning combination.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4529292058 - 'Ah! a relaxing and very civilised Easter bank holiday monday afternoon with my friend Stephen in the Cafe Royal, tucked away in West Register Street, Edinburgh. Nice to be served real cask ales and great food.
It has its origins across the road from where it now stands back in 1826. It was known then for its Oysters, one of the rare foods I have given up trying to enjoy, they are just not for me. Local architect Robert Paterson is responsible for its parisian style and its a great step back to victorian gin palace times, a bit like the Phil in Liverpool ( www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3804831303/ ).
On the menu today was a lovely tomato based fish soup, Moules (Mussels to you), mixed starters to share, pork in cider, although the homemade sandwiches and burgers in there are also really nice. i had the fish soup followed by a really good Cranachan (a local Scots desert with double cream, oats and raspberries), try it if you get the chance, naughty but nice!

Yes, those 'Jacks In The Green' (yep they are plural !) have been busy during that long unusually cold winter. The results of their quiet labour seem to have all burst out into bloom around us.
The Pussy willow (Salix Caprea) is native to our corner of Europe and bits of Asia. The flowers seen here along an old railway line, are soft silky, silvery 3-7 cm long catkins, produced in early spring before the new leaves appear. Its dioecious in that there are male and female catkins on different plants.
Before the male catkins of these species come into full flower they are covered in fine, greyish fur, leading to a fancied likeness to tiny cats, also known as 'pussies'. The catkins appear long before the leaves, and are one of the earliest signs of spring.
The male catkins mature yellow at pollen release, the female catkins pale green. The fruit is a small capsule 5-10 mm long containing numerous minute seeds embedded in fine cottony hairs. The seeds are very small (about 0.2 mm) with the fine hairs aiding dispersal. To germinate they require bare soil.
This plant was historically widely used as a browse for goats and that might be the origin of the other name for this shrub.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4546943548 - 'One of my favourite watering holes in the city of Edinburgh. Delightfully tucked away off Princes Street and away from the rowdy bars of Rose Street. My default choice in there is Weihenstephan - '\u00e4lteste Brauerei der Welt' (lierally Dedicating Stefan - oldest brewery of the world), which is a lovely pint, in its own special tall glass. A plaque outside details its history.
The origins of the site was the Guildford Arms Hotel. This was more or less totally rteworked by Robert Macfarlane Cameron in 1898. It was modelled on the then popular victorian gin palace theme echoing the Phil in Liverpool and the Crown in Belfast among others. Most pubs were at the time male dominated and frankly dingy and possibly a little dangerous. The temperance movement is said to have encouraged the design of more luxurious pubs, particularly suitable for the fairer sex rather than just men.
The current configuration dates from 1940. However the centrepoint of the Guildford\u2019s late Victorian opulence is the magnificent Jacobean style ceiling which can be seen in this image. A row of real ale pumps on the bar all have the logo of DM Stewart, owner since victorian days.
A grand old Thorne Brothers Mirror hangs at the end of the bar. Just below the cornice height, wood panelling conceals a hidden room: legend has that this was aparently used to store spirits and other liquor which was pumped to the room from street level. A narrow walkway
leads from this room around the inner walls to the Gallery. This gallery now provides an ideal spot for diners to marvel at the superbly decorated ceiling or gaze down at the punters in the Public Bar. Both lunch and dinner are served in the Gallery Restaurant with lunch and snacks (Chilli Cashews is my weakness when in there) also served in the Lounge &
Public Bar areas. I can vouch for the excellent range of real ales. Usually a wider selection from Scotland (including the islands) than the neighbour to the south too. Readers of The Edinburgh Evening News voted the Guildford Arms Best City Bar in 1999. If you are in town and have a spare hour or so for victorian time travel, pop in!

A truly compact place awash with old Tay ferry crossing timetables, metal signs and Beer/Whisky mirrors. A true one off and one of my watering holes whenever I get the chance to pop into the old town. Unfortunatly no longer has Cressers brush shop opposite.
This place is up there in the premier league of classic pubs with the Crown in Belfast, Philharmonic in Liverpool www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3804831303/ and the Circus Tavern in Manchester.

By area (trivia buffs and quiz night experts) its the second largest main line railway station in the United Kingdom after London Waterloo. Glasgow Central handles more passengers however.
In 1868 the North British Railway (NBR) acquired the stations of its rivals, demolished all three, and closed the Scotland Street tunnel to Canal Street. The present Victorian station was built on the site, and extended in the late 19th century. The North British Hotel (now The Balmoral) opened in 1902 as a railway hotel, and was operated as part of the station until the 1980s. Waverley has been in continual use since, under the auspices of the North British, the LNER, British Rail, Railtrack and latterly the wayward Network Rail.

The Midlothian area of Scotland was once the heart of a large coal mining area. After the decline and defeat of Arthur Scargill, the man who was described as mad for suggesting that 20,000 miners jobs in the UK may go. The true figure was in excess of 40,000. He may have been militant, but he was not mad.
Shame the victors get to write the history eh?
Midlothian is left with some towns and villages with remnents of those heady days. One is Dalkeith:

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M36995 - Edinburgh Playhouse is a theatre in Edinburgh, Scotland. With 3,059 seats it is the second largest theatre in the United Kingdom after the Hammersmith Apollo. The theatre is owned by Ambassador Theatre Group.
The theatre opened on 12 August 1929 as a super-cinema, and was modelled on the Roxy Cinema in New York. It was designed by the specialist cinema architect John Fairweather, most famous for his Green's Playhouse cinema in Glasgow. The original colour scheme was described on opening as follows:
Tones of ivory and stone predominate on the walls, and the roof is decorated with bands of pale green leaves intersected with gold at intervals. The seats in the different parts of the house have been upholstered to harmonise with the general scheme of the decoration. The organ fronts are in Venetian style, and the clock settings, which are square, are neat and attractive.
The building was originally listed Category B in 1974, and this was upgraded by Historic Scotland to Category A in 2008
In recent years, The Playhouse has played host to a wide variety of artists and shows.
It also caters to the youth of the surrounding area who are involved in stage experience projects and youth musicals projects in which children as young as 10, and young adults as old as 21, can take part in shows on the world-famous stage.
It is used as a venue for both the Edinburgh International Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe each August
The building is said to be haunted by a ghost called Albert, a man in a grey coat who appears on level six accompanied by a chill in the air. He is variously said to have been either a stagehand who was killed in an accident or a night-watchman who committed suicide

Greyfriars Kirkyard is the graveyard surrounding Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is located at the southern edge of the Old Town, adjacent to George Heriot's School. Burials have been taking place since the late 16th century, and a number of notable Edinburgh residents are interred at Greyfriars. The Kirkyard is operated by City of Edinburgh Council in liaison with a charitable trust, which is linked to but separate from the church. The Kirkyard and its monuments are protected as a category A listed building.
History
Greyfriars takes its name from the Franciscan friary on the site (the friars of which wear grey habits), which was dissolved in 1560. The churchyard was founded in August 1562 after Royal sanction was granted to replace the churchyard at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh. The latter burial ground was not used after around 1600
By 1565, all the buildings of the Friary had been removed and their stones carried away for use in the construction of the New Tolbooth and to repair St Giles' and its kirkyard walls. The kirkyard of St Giles' was, by then, overcrowded and Mary, Queen of Scots had, in 1562, given the grounds of the Friary to the town council to use as a burial ground
Greyfriars Bobby (4 May 1855 ? 14 January 1872) was a Skye Terrier or Dandie Dinmont Terrier who became known in 19th-century Edinburgh for spending 14 years guarding the grave of his owner until he died on 14 January 1872. The story continues to be well known in Scotland, through several books and films. A prominent commemorative statue and nearby graves are a tourist attraction.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD9C - Leith is a suburb of Edinburgh where it meets the sea. It lies on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, Lothian, Scotland UK. Leith had electric street lighting from 1890, and electric trams from 1905 (only Blackpool was earlier in the UK). the trams are returning at great cost and more changes have improved teh Leith waterfront in recent years.
The Malmaison Hotel, beside the entrance to Leith Docks, at the Shore, Leith, shown here was formerly a sailors' home. The Sailors' Home used to provide accommodation for sailors whose ships were in port. The Home contained comfortable rooms for each rank, a canteen, a low cost clothing shop, recreational rooms and a chapel.
It was an innovation in social care at a time when many workers lived in overcrowded slums. The angel in the stonework above the door was an emblem for the seamen's mission. Much investment has been made to improve the area from The City of Edinburgh District Council, Forth Ports Authority and the Water of Leith Conservation Trust.
The statue to the left is of Sandy Irvine Robertson OBE, wine merchant, charity promoter, founder of Scottish Business Achievement Awards, once wrote of as one of those people who made life worth living. A bear of a man, standing six and a half feet tall, he had a heart the size of Scotland. He was mischievous, often outrageous, but never unkind, and those of us privileged to have known his friendship will be eternally grateful for it. Praise indeed.
Leith is known for its port and red wine imports and I assume he was linked to 'Irvine Robertson Wines' who are located just up the road. After his premature death (Born: 11 August, 1942, in Stirling Died: 20 June, 1999, aged 56), his friends commissioned a bronze statue on the waterfront at Leith. It was sculpted by Lucy Poett. She studied under Cubilt Bevis at The Heatherley School of Art in London and with the late Scott Sutherland RSA in Dundee.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PG69G6 - Yard Of Ale formed originally in 1972 and had ten successful years on the pub and club circuit, winning the TV Times Pub Entertainers of the Year award, doing well on ITV's New Faces and appearing on many television and radio shows including STV's Thingummyjig and BBC Scotland's Scottish Radio Orchestra Roadshow. During this time they also supported, amongst others, Matt McGinn, Hamish Imlach and Billy Connolly and enjoyed an extended run at the Edinburgh Festival with the legendary Tim Hardin.
Thereafter they went their separate ways........Alistair McDougald performing solo on the club cabaret circuit, Colin Mackenzie forming and playing with North Sea Gas folk group and Ian Lawson leading a successful rock band.
In 1992 the group reformed for a project in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with Bill Hill in which they performed acoustic music spanning 30 years........Skiffle, Folk, Protest, Calypso, Country and Contemporary.
One of the hits of this year's festival - Danny Kyle, BBC Radio Scotland.
Since then the band have been in great demand for concerts, folk festivals, corporate functions, pub, hotel and club gigs all over Scotland and on tour in Denmark and Ireland.
Peter Gillan joined the band when Ian retired due to work commitments in 1998. Having spent many years as a singer/guitarist playing solo on the folk and country scenes, Peter's experience has added yet another dimension to the band.
Walter Mowat joined Yard Of Ale in 2015. Walter has played in a number of folk and bluegrass bands over the years and also plays violin with the Really Terrible Orchestra.
Ian Lawson and Colin Mackenzie still occasionally feature with the band for larger gigs and as emergency stand-ins.

The name of the bar is inspired by an Edinburgh legend of a scruffy Skye terrier called Bobby. When his owner died in 1858, Bobby faithfully watched over his grave and was buried alongside his master in the Greyfriars Kirkyard in 1872.
