Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6C3 - A brightly decorated bar boat moored at Paddington Basin on the Grand Union Canal in west London, photographed at Paddington Basin, London W2 1TR. The floating venue features seating, lighting and decorative elements designed for socialising, with the canal and surrounding modern buildings forming a distinctive urban backdrop.
Paddington Basin is part of a wider regeneration area that has transformed former industrial and transport-related land into a mixed-use district combining offices, housing, restaurants and public spaces. The presence of bar boats and leisure craft reflects a broader revival of London's historic canal network, which once played a crucial role in freight transport but is now increasingly associated with recreation, tourism and lifestyle uses.
The Grand Union Canal, one of the longest canals in the UK, runs through west and north London, linking the capital with the Midlands. In areas such as Paddington Basin, the canal has become a focal point for waterside placemaking, where floating cafés, bars and cultural venues add vibrancy to the public realm and encourage informal social interaction.
Scenes like this are often used editorially to illustrate themes of urban regeneration, adaptive reuse of infrastructure, the growth of waterside leisure economies and changing patterns of city life. Photographed in daylight with people, seating and moored boats visible, the image captures the canal as a lived-in urban space rather than a purely historic relic.
The photograph offers strong editorial value for subjects including London waterways, floating hospitality, contemporary urban leisure, tourism and the reinvention of post-industrial environments, making it suitable for travel features, lifestyle coverage and urban studies publications.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E2A210 - Interior view of sample artworks displayed along a gallery wall at The Gilbert & George Centre in Spitalfields, East London. The photograph shows a sequence of framed works hung in a clean, minimalist exhibition space, with bold colour, graphic portraiture, and the instantly recognisable visual language associated with Gilbert & George. This is a strong editorial and documentary image of a contemporary London art gallery, useful for themes including British contemporary art, museum and gallery interiors, exhibition design, cultural tourism, artist-founded institutions, and the visual identity of one of the capital's most distinctive art venues.
The image works especially well because it captures both the artworks and the presentation style of the centre itself. The long white wall, even spacing of the framed pieces, and quiet architectural setting help emphasise the formal display of the work, while also giving a sense of the visitor experience inside the gallery. It suggests a curated, purpose-built environment where the art is central, but where the interior design remains calm and controlled. This makes the photograph suitable for searches around London gallery interiors, East London culture, framed exhibition works, modern art display, and cultural destinations near Brick Lane and Aldgate East.
As an editorial stock image, it is relevant for publishing, magazine features, arts journalism, travel writing, education, museum commentary, and broader pieces about London's creative economy and cultural landmarks. The Gilbert & George Centre has become a notable part of the East End arts landscape, and this interior scene helps document the atmosphere of the venue as well as the public presentation of the artists' work. The composition, perspective, and soft indoor lighting create a polished but accessible visual record of a gallery exhibition setting, making it useful for art, tourism, architecture, and culture-related searches

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E6T4PT - Long descriptive narrative, under 1,990 characters, no URLs, 1,932 chars:
Green Islington People's Plaque to Derek Jarman on the exterior of a building in Islington, north London. The circular plaque commemorates Derek Jarman, 1942 to 1994, and identifies him as an artist, film director and queer activist, recording that he lived at this address between 1967 and 1969. Photographed close up against a pale wall, the image is a strong editorial subject for stories about LGBTQ history, queer activism, British film culture, London heritage plaques, public commemoration and the cultural legacy of one of the most influential and unconventional creative figures of late twentieth-century Britain. Jarman is widely associated with radical independent cinema, experimental art, music videos, stage design, political campaigning and outspoken activism around gay rights and HIV/AIDS awareness. The plaque's wording and clean composition make the photograph especially useful for editorial coverage of LGBT History Month, Pride, heritage trails, London tourism, Islington landmarks, public history projects and the visibility of queer lives in the urban landscape. It also works well for features on memorial plaques, cultural geography, artists' former homes, the social history of Islington and the ways local authorities mark important residents through permanent public signage. Because the plaque uses the phrase queer activist, the image has added relevance for discussions of identity, language, representation and the recognition of LGBTQ contribution within mainstream civic memory. Commercially, the picture is suitable for newspapers, magazines, educational material, travel guides, history websites, biographies and features about Derek Jarman's films, art, politics and continuing influence on British culture. It is also well suited to pieces on London's queer heritage trail, cultural memory, creative activism and the importance of visible civic recognition for LGBTQ public figures

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RTJRXC - The British Museum has come under pressure after it sacked a member of staff over around 2,000 treasures reported missing, stolen or damaged.
The discovery at the museum, one of the nation's biggest cultural institutions, has led to the departure of its director and raised serious questions about its security and record keeping.
Police are investigating the theft of items including gold, jewellery and gems of semi-precious stones.
The missing treasures scandal began on 16 August, when the British Museum released a statement confirming it had identified objects missing from its collection.
Former chancellor George Osborne, who has been chair of the British Museum since June 2021, confirmed to the BBC on 26 August that around 2,000 objects were missing.
The museum has not disclosed further details. The BBC understands that Scotland Yard has asked the museum not to for now.
It is understood the missing items were taken before this year and over a significant period of time. Some of them ended up on eBay, being sold for considerably less than their actual estimated value.
None of the treasures, which dated from the 15th Century BC to the 19th Century AD, had recently been on display and had been kept primarily for academic and research purposes, the museum said. The majority of them were kept in a storeroom.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RW3WXN - The Two Voices is a poem written by future Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom Alfred, Lord Tennyson between 1833 and 1834. It was included in his 1842 collection of Poems. Tennyson wrote the poem, titled Thoughts of a Suicide in manuscript, after the death of his friend Arthur Henry Hallam in 1833. The poem was autobiographical.
Tennyson explained, When I wrote 'The Two Voices' I was so utterly miserable, a burden to myself and to my family, that I said, 'Is life worth anything?' (Hill, 54). In the poem, one voice urges the other to suicide (There is one remedy for all repeated on lines 201 and 237)
the poet's arguments against it range from vanity to desperation, yet the voice discredits all. The poem's ending delivers no conclusions, and has been widely criticized[according to whom?]the poet finds no internal affirmation, invoking solace outside himself (Tucker). The Two Voices was published following a ten-year span (1832-1842) in which Tennyson did not publish anything, coinciding with what some call one of the deafening silences of Victorian literary history

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T35C2K - The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Walk is a 7-mile (11 km) long circular walking trail in central London, England, dedicated to the memory of Diana, Princess of Wales.
Overview
The walk passes between Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park, Green Park and St. James's Park in a figure-eight pattern, passing five sites that are associated with Princess Diana's life: Kensington Palace, Spencer House, Buckingham Palace, St. James's Palace, and Clarence House. It is marked with ninety individual plaques, each of which has a heraldic rose etched in the centre made of aluminium. Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown, who was the Chairman of the Diana, Princess of Wales, Memorial Committee was quoted as saying it is one of the most magnificent urban parkland walks in the world. The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Walk is in London, and celebrates the life of the Princess of Wales who died in a car accident on 31 August 1997 in Paris.
The walk was constructed at a cost of £1.3 million. No member of the Royal Family was present at its opening

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RTJRXR - HM Government Education secretary has been recorded on camera suggesting others have been sat on their a***s over the school Raac crisis, while saying the government should be thanked for their response.
As part of a morning round of interviews, Gillian Keegan was speaking to ITV News as it was confirmed there could potentially be hundreds more schools affected by the crisis.
In the moments after the main body of the interview had finished, and as the camera repositioned for extra shots, Keegan - still wearing her microphone - criticised others and claimed the government has gone over and above in addressing concerns relating to reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac).
Does anyone ever say, you know what, you've done a f***ing good job because everyone else has sat on their a**** and done nothing, Ms Keegan said.
She added: Any sign of that, no?
The Education Secretary was forced to apologise today, after an extraordinary foul-mouthed outburst to ITV News, Dan Hewitt reports

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RTJRXY - Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett GBE (née Garrett
11 June 1847 5 August 1929) was an English politician, writer and activist. She campaigned for women's suffrage by legal change and in 18971919 led Britain's largest women's rights association, the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS),[1] explaining, I cannot say I became a suffragist. I always was one, from the time I was old enough to think at all about the principles of Representative Government. She tried to broaden women's chances of higher education, as a governor of Bedford College, London (now Royal Holloway) and co-founding Newnham College, Cambridge in 1875. In 2018, a century after the Representation of the People Act, she was the first woman honoured by a statue in Parliament Square in 2018 by Gillian Wearing. Following a campaign and petition by the activist Caroline Criado Perez, the statue's creation was endorsed by both the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Theresa May, and the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. The statue, Parliament Square's first monument to a woman and also its first sculpture by a woman, was funded through the government's Centenary Fund, which marks 100 years since some women won the right to vote. The memorial was unveiled on 24 April 2018
Fawcett was born on 11 June 1847 in Aldeburgh, to Newson Garrett (18121893), a businessman from nearby Leiston, and his London wife Louisa (née Dunnell, 18131903). She was the eighth of their ten children

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T35BXW - The Peabody Trust was founded in 1862 as the Peabody Donation Fund and now brands itself simply as Peabody. It is one of London's oldest and largest housing associations with over 100,000 homes across London and the home counties. It is also a community benefit society and urban regeneration agency, with a focus on placemaking, stewardship and a provider of an extensive range of community programmes.
The Trust was founded in 1862 by London-based American banker George Peabody, who in the 1850s had developed a great affection for London, and determined to make a charitable gift to benefit it. His initial ideas included a system of drinking fountains
The Peabody Trust was later constituted by Act of Parliament, stipulating its objectives to work solely within London for the relief of poverty. This was to be expressed through the provision of model dwellings for the capital's poor.
The first block of Peabody dwellings in Commercial Street, Spitalfields. A wood-engraving published in the Illustrated London News in 1863, shortly before the building opened.
The first block, designed by H. A. Darbishire in a red-brick Jacobethan style, opened in Commercial Street, Spitalfields, on 29 February 1864. It cost £22,000 to build, and contained 57 dwellings (i.e. flats) for the poor, nine shops with accommodation for the shopkeepers, and baths and laundry facilities on the upper floor. Water-closets were grouped in pairs by the staircases, with one shared between every two flats. This first block was followed by larger estates in Islington, Poplar, Shadwell, Chelsea, Westminster, Bermondsey, and elsewhere. By 1882 the Trust housed more than 14,600 people in 3,500 dwellings. By 1939 it owned more than 8,000 dwellings.
In its early days, the Trust imposed strict rules to ensure that its tenants were of good moral character. Rents were to be paid weekly and punctually
there was a night-time curfew and a set of moral standards to be adhered to

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RBXAM5 - Waterloo station also known as London Waterloo, is a central London terminus on the National Rail network in the United Kingdom, in the Waterloo area of the London Borough of Lambeth. It is connected to a London Underground station of the same name and is adjacent to Waterloo East station on the South Eastern Main Line. The station is the terminus of the South West Main Line to Weymouth via Southampton, the West of England main line to Exeter via Salisbury, the Portsmouth Direct line to Portsmouth Harbour which connects with ferry services to the Isle of Wight, and several commuter services around west and south-west London, Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire.
The station was opened in 1848 by the London and South Western Railway, and it replaced the earlier Nine Elms as it was closer to the West End. It was never designed to be a terminus, as the original intention was to continue the line towards the City of London, and consequently the station developed in a haphazard fashion, leading to difficulty finding the correct platform. The station was rebuilt in the early 20th century, opening in 1922, and included the Victory Arch over the main entrance, which commemorated World War I. Waterloo was the last London terminus to provide steam-powered services, which ended in 1967. The station was the London terminus for Eurostar international trains from 1994 until 2007, when they were transferred to St. Pancras.
Waterloo is the busiest railway station in the UK, handling 41 million passengers in the year to March 2022. It is also the UK's largest station in terms of floor space and has the greatest number of platforms.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39Y6M - Avanti West Coast is a train operating company in the United Kingdom owned by FirstGroup (70%) and Trenitalia (30%) that operates the West Coast Partnership.
During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.
Between 14 August and 18 September 2022, Avanti West Coast reduced its timetable, citing unofficial strike action from its employees. However, this allegation was disputed by Aslef, which accused the company of lying and blamed their lack of recruitment, especially of train drivers, for the problems. Trains were running at one service per hour on the majority of routes, as opposed to the three which would typically occur on the London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly route. Following these changes, Avanti West Coast was subject to public criticism
news stories emerged of numerous train cancellations, overcrowded services, delays, and expensive fares. Many commuters faced difficulties reaching their destinations on the reduced services and some travellers have been left to wait for to two days before travel for tickets to be released for sale

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39XXG - Lewis Floyd Henry has been out on the streets and stages of the world evolving as a one man band and gaining the reputation of being a great live act. Whilst developing his unique approach to performing, musical ideas have flourished in the form of his own compositions and recordings.
A One Man, Multi Genre, Traveling Sonic Medicine Show
Lewis Floyd Henry takes the rarified tradition of the one man band, street corner, blues music of Lone Cat Fuller to an almost burlesque stratospheric level a one man, multi genre, sonic medicine show. Lewis devised a foot operated miniature toy drum kit set on it's side for his rhythm section with other pedals including loopers you can imagine the reanimated ghost cadavers of Son House, Jimi Hendrix and several bright orange dwarves dancing like voodoo puppets as he pounds out rhythms like an ancient, corroded 808 against a back drop of 60's psyche inspired grooves.
He sounds like Lone Cat Fuller jamming Captain Beefheart in Margate. What makes it so great is the loose one man band synthesis of Piedmont Country Blues, the occasional vocal flavours of Mick Jagger and the vintage ragtime jazz and skiffle leanings. 8 bit absinthe of authenticity
Look no further if you want to escape the relentless polish of 21st Century plastique overproduction and feed your ears something soaked in the 8 bit absinthe of authenticity it will probably kill your speakers, it's raw and gritty-it ain't perfect but that's what makes it so damn good.

Fresh from spending years busking the hard streets of London, let iconoclastic bluesman, and genuine, original, one man band Lewis Floyd Henry take you on a rickety old roller coaster ride. If you're looking for something fresh, inventive, and suitably low-fi Lewis is your man.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39XXN - Lewis Floyd Henry has been out on the streets and stages of the world evolving as a one man band and gaining the reputation of being a great live act.
You can even taste a bit of Hendrix, Son House and a slice of Hank III and Beck just to spice everything up a touch.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMNT - This image shows Central Parade flats and its prominent clock tower on Church Hill in Walthamstow, East London, an instantly recognisable local landmark within the Walthamstow Village area of the London Borough of Waltham Forest. The building dates from the interwar period and reflects the practical yet decorative municipal architecture of the 1930s, combining red brick construction with patterned concrete panels and a tall vertical tower housing a large public clock.
The development was designed as mixed-use housing, with commercial premises at ground level and residential flats above, a common urban model intended to support walkable neighbourhoods and local trade. The clock tower acts as both a civic feature and a wayfinding landmark, visually anchoring Church Hill and the surrounding streets.
The photograph was taken in daylight under a bright, partly cloudy summer sky, which highlights the contrasting textures of brick, concrete, and glazing across the facade. Pedestrians, traffic signals, and nearby residential buildings place the structure firmly within everyday London life, emphasising its continued role as functional housing rather than a preserved monument.
Images such as this are well suited to editorial use covering themes of London housing, social and municipal architecture, urban regeneration, local identity, mixed-use development, and the character of historic residential areas in East London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMRC - This image shows a branded contractor van used by Orbit Building Communities, displaying the logo and web address of MPS Housing, one of its housing repairs and maintenance partners. The white service vehicle is equipped with roof-mounted ladders, indicating use for building maintenance and on-site repair work.
Orbit Building Communities is a major UK housing association providing social and affordable housing across England. Contractors such as MPS Housing deliver frontline services including responsive repairs, planned maintenance, and compliance-related works within occupied residential properties. Vehicles like this are a familiar sight on housing estates and residential streets, representing the operational backbone of social housing delivery.
The photograph was taken in daylight in a residential London setting, with brick housing visible in the background. The clear branding highlights the increasingly professionalised and outsourced nature of housing maintenance services within the UK social housing sector, where housing associations rely on specialist contractors to meet regulatory standards and tenant expectations.
This image is suitable for editorial use covering social housing, housing maintenance, public sector contracting, property repairs, urban living, and the day-to-day infrastructure that supports affordable housing provision in London and across the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMRX - This image shows the exterior of the Barrel Store operated by Wild Card Brewery, located on the Ravenswood Industrial Estate in Walthamstow, East London. Bold painted lettering on the rendered wall advertises the Barrel Store and highlights the brewery's focus on the retail and manufacture of barrel-aged beer, a specialist area within the UK craft brewing scene.
Wild Card Brewery is part of a wider cluster of independent creative and food-and-drink businesses that have taken root in former light-industrial premises across Walthamstow. Facilities such as the Barrel Store are used for ageing beer in oak barrels, allowing flavours to develop over extended periods and linking modern craft brewing with traditional production techniques.
The scene is photographed in daylight under a partly cloudy sky, with picnic-style outdoor seating visible in front of the building, suggesting use as both a working production space and a customer-facing retail or tasting area. The utilitarian industrial setting contrasts with the growing cultural and social role of craft breweries as community hubs.
This image is well suited to editorial use covering London's craft beer movement, independent breweries, small-scale manufacturing, urban regeneration, food and drink culture, and the reuse of industrial estates by creative businesses in East London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMTW - This image shows the illuminated neon sign for The Rolling Scones Cafe, located within God's Own Junkyard on the Ravenswood Industrial Estate in Walthamstow, East London. The café forms an integral part of the visitor experience at the venue, providing food and drink amid one of London's most distinctive collections of neon signage.
God's Own Junkyard is internationally recognised for its dense, immersive displays of vintage and custom-made neon signs, many of which have appeared in films, television, and music videos. The Rolling Scones Café sits among this visual overload, serving visitors, photographers, and tourists who come to experience the space as both an art installation and a cultural attraction.
The sign itself uses flowing red neon script spelling The Rolling Scones, with a smaller illuminated Cafe panel beneath, mounted against industrial brickwork typical of former light-industrial buildings in the area. The contrast between utilitarian architecture and expressive neon typography reflects the wider character of the Junkyard, where commercial signage is recontextualised as art.
Photographed in daylight, the image highlights the continued relevance of neon signage in contemporary creative spaces. It is well suited to editorial use covering London cafes, independent hospitality, creative venues, neon art, cultural tourism, and the adaptive reuse of industrial estates in East London.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMW0 - This image shows a heart-shaped neon sign reading Wedding Chapel, glowing in red and turquoise light and surrounded by multicoloured bulbs. The sign is displayed within God's Own Junkyard, a renowned neon art space in Walthamstow, East London, known for its dense, immersive displays of reclaimed and custom-made illuminated signage.
The heart motif, combined with the language of weddings and chapels, evokes themes of love, commitment, marriage, and romantic union. Neon signage like this draws on visual traditions associated with Las Vegas wedding chapels, roadside Americana, and popular culture, where romance, sexuality, and spectacle are closely intertwined.
The bright, saturated colours and glowing tubes lend the sign a playful yet provocative tone, suggesting both the celebration of long-term commitment and the intimacy and desire often associated with romantic relationships. The handwritten script visible above the main lettering adds a personal, sentimental layer to the otherwise bold graphic design.
Photographed indoors under low ambient light, the image emphasises the warmth and intensity of the neon glow, making it well suited to editorial use covering themes of love, marriage, romance, adult relationships, sexuality, visual culture, and contemporary neon art.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMW6 - This image shows a brightly illuminated vintage neon sign reading Eton Rifles, displayed amid a dense arrangement of colourful electric signage at God's Own Junkyard in Walthamstow, East London. The sign features bold red lettering and a circular target motif, surrounded by overlapping neon forms that create a visually saturated and immersive environment.
God's Own Junkyard is internationally known for its collection of reclaimed and commissioned neon signs, many of which reference British pubs, popular culture, film, music, and advertising. Signs like this one reflect the craftsmanship of traditional sign making, where hand-bent glass tubes and vivid gases were used to create durable, eye-catching illumination long before the rise of digital displays.
Photographed indoors under low ambient light, the intense glow of the neon dominates the frame, emphasising colour, contrast, and texture. The overlapping lights create a sense of visual overload that is central to the Junkyard's appeal, turning commercial signage into a form of contemporary light art.
This image is well suited to editorial use covering neon art, visual culture, design history, creative reuse, London subculture, and the continuing fascination with analogue signage in a digital age.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3Y9N6 - The tomb of Isaac Solly, St Mary's Churchyard
St Mary's Church is very much at the centre of Walthamstow Village - an Essex village which has been engulfed in the London sprawl. The west tower, aisles and chancel chapels were built during the reign of Henry VIIIth. The church was altered and enlarged in 1818 and again in 1843. On 6th April 1673 Richard Penn and on 4th March 1681 Lady Penn were buried. They were the brother and mother of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania.
Isaac Solly died on February 4th 1802 aged 77 and he certainly has a very distinctive tomb with the sad lions and the tomb resting on lions' feet.
This tomb is in the western half of the churchyard, beyond the path which separates it from the church.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3YB8W - Liverpool Street station, also known as London Liverpool Street, is a central London railway terminus and connected London Underground station in the north-eastern corner of the City of London, in the ward of Bishopsgate Without. It is the terminus of the West Anglia Main Line to Cambridge, the Great Eastern Main Line to Norwich, commuter trains serving east London and destinations in the East of England, and the Stansted Express service to Stansted Airport.
The station opened in 1874, as a replacement for Bishopsgate station as the Great Eastern Railway's main London terminus. By 1895, it had the most platforms of any London terminal station. During the First World War, an air raid on the station killed 16 on site, and 146 others in nearby areas. In the build-up to the Second World War, the station served as the entry point for thousands of child refugees arriving in London as part of the Kindertransport rescue mission. The station was damaged by the 1993 Bishopsgate bombing and, during the 7 July 2005 bombing, seven passengers were killed when a bomb exploded aboard an Underground train, just after it had departed from Liverpool Street. New platforms for the Elizabeth line opened in 2022 as part of the Crossrail project.
Liverpool Street was built as a dual-level station, with provision for the Underground. A tube station opened in 1875 for the Metropolitan Railway
the tube station is now served by the Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. It is in fare zone 1 and is managed directly by Network Rail.

These cast-iron Police Call Posts were manufactured in the early 1930's by British Ericsson and sited throughout the City of London. The posts enabled the public to call the Police station and were also used for the station to contact the Policeman on the beat in that area. The red signal light would flash if the Constable were required to contact the station. The upper hatch opened to give access to the telephone
the middle door opened horizontally to provide a writing surface and lower door opened to a storage cupboard containing first aid kit and other useful items.
All the posts were decommissioned in the 1960's, when radio communication took over, and the majority of their contents were removed at that time.
A number of these posts were sold in the 1980's
The Liverpool Street Call Post had been particularly severely damaged by a vehicle collision. The fragments were painstakingly welded together and replacement cast-iron parts made only where absolutely necessary. All the posts were cleaned and repaired and their surfaces primed and filled where required to improve their surface quality.
Prior to restoration, the condition of the City's collection was in varying condition. Three of the posts, Aldgate, St Martin's le Grand and Walbrook, were in fairly good condition, however the remainder required full repair and replacement of missing parts.
The decision to remove cast-iron objects to the workshop for repair is one that requires careful judgement: as cast-iron is fragile, such objects should always be repaired in situ when possible to limit the risk of damage in transit. However, five of these posts could only be repaired off site, so having acquired consent, their temporary removal was carried out with great care.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDP1 - Battersea Power Station is a decommissioned Grade II* listed coal-fired power station, located on the south bank of the River Thames, in Nine Elms, Battersea, in the London Borough of Wandsworth. It was built by the London Power Company (LPC) to the design of Leonard Pearce, Engineer in Chief to the LPC, and CS Allott & Son Engineers. The architects were J. Theo Halliday and Giles Gilbert Scott. The station is one of the world's largest brick buildings and notable for its original, Art Deco interior fittings and decor.
The building comprises two power stations, built in two stages, in a single building. Battersea A Power Station was built between 1929 and 1935 and Battersea B Power Station, to its east, between 1937 and 1941, when construction was paused owing to the worsening effects of the Second World War. The building was completed in 1955. Battersea B was built to a design nearly identical to that of Battersea A, creating the iconic four-chimney structure.
Battersea A was decommissioned in 1975. In 1980 the whole structure was given Grade II listed status
Battersea B shut three years later. In 2007 its listed status was upgraded to Grade II*. The building remained empty until 2014, during which time it fell into near ruin. Various plans were made to make use of the building, but none were successful. In 2012, administrators Ernst & Young entered into an exclusivity agreement with Malaysia's S P Setia and Sime Darby to develop the site to include 253 residential units, bars, restaurants, office space (occupied by Apple and No. 18 business members club), shops and entertainment spaces. The plans were approved and redevelopment commenced a few years later. As of 2021, the building and the overall 42-acre (17 ha) site development is owned by a consortium of Malaysian investors.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R7A3WE - This image shows a wide, panoramic view within Highgate Cemetery in North London, with visitors seated beside historic graves along a gently curving path. Stone crosses and memorial monuments line the edge of the walkway, while mature trees and dense greenery frame the scene, reinforcing the cemetery's distinctive woodland character.
Highgate Cemetery is notable not only as a Victorian burial ground but also as a valued green space where remembrance, history, and everyday life intersect. The presence of people sitting quietly together reflects the cemetery's contemporary role as a place for reflection, conversation, and calm, as well as mourning.
The contrast between living visitors and historic memorials highlights the layered nature of the site, where nineteenth-century funerary art coexists with modern use. This balance between preservation and accessibility has helped shape Highgate's reputation as both a heritage landmark and a peaceful urban retreat.
Photographed in soft daylight, the image captures the relaxed, contemplative atmosphere that distinguishes Highgate Cemetery from more formal burial grounds. It is well suited for editorial use illustrating London green spaces, cemetery culture, heritage landscapes, and the human relationship with historic places of remembrance.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R7A45C - The Tomb of Karl Marx stands in the Eastern cemetery of Highgate Cemetery, North London, England. It commemorates the burial sites of Marx, of his wife, Jenny von Westphalen, and other members of his family. Originally buried in a different part of the Eastern cemetery, the bodies were disinterred and reburied at their present location in 1954. The tomb was designed by Laurence Bradshaw and was unveiled in 1956, in a ceremony led by Harry Pollitt, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Great Britain, which funded the memorial.
The tomb consists of a large bust of Marx in bronze set on a marble pedestal. The pedestal is inscribed with quotes from Marx's works including, on the front, the final words of The Communist Manifesto, Workers of all lands unite. Since its construction, the tomb has become a place of pilgrimage for followers of Marxist theory. It has also been a target for Marx's opponents, suffering vandalism, and two bomb attacks in the 1970s. It is a Grade I listed structure, the highest listing reserved for buildings and structures of exceptional interest.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R7A45T - Paul Mackintosh Foot (8 November 1937 18 July 2004) was a British investigative journalist, political campaigner, author, and long-time member of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP).
In 1964, in London he began to work for The Sun, as the trade union newspaper, the Daily Herald, had become, in a department called Probe. The intention was to investigate and publish stories behind the news but the Probe team resigned after six months.
Foot left to work, part-time, on the Mandrake column on The Sunday Telegraph. He had contributed articles to Private Eye since 1964 but decided, in February 1967, to take a cut in salary and join the staff of the magazine on a full-time basis, working with its editor, Richard Ingrams and Peter Cook
Foot's first stint at Private Eye lasted until 1972 when, according to Patrick Marnham, Foot was sacked by Ingrams who had come to the conclusion that Foot's copy was being unduly influenced by his contacts in the International Socialists. Ingrams has denied this, writing, It was said at the time that he and I had fallen out over political issues
Six years later he returned to Private Eye but was poached in 1979 by the editor of the Daily Mirror, Mike Molloy, who offered him a weekly investigative page of his own with one condition, that he was not to make propaganda for the SWP. In 1980, Foot began to look into the case of the Bridgewater Four, who had been convicted the previous year of killing Stourbridge newspaper boy Carl Bridgewater. He repeatedly returned to this case, to the occasional consternation of his editor but believed this practice would lead to new witnesses coming forward. Foot and his colleagues looked through many thousands of pages of evidence and statements
Paul Foot died of a heart attack at the age of 66. A tribute issue of the Socialist Review, on whose editorial board Foot sat for 19 years, collected together many of his articles, while issue 1116 of Private Eye included a tribute to Foot

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R7A47B - This photograph shows a group of stone crosses and grave monuments set among lush vegetation in Highgate Cemetery, one of London's most historically significant Victorian burial grounds. The memorials include a variety of cross designs, from simple Latin crosses to more elaborate Celtic forms, reflecting the religious symbolism and artistic styles commonly used in nineteenth-century funerary sculpture.
Highgate Cemetery is renowned for its wooded setting and the way nature has gradually reclaimed many of its monuments. Ivy, wild grasses, and mature trees surround the graves, softening the stonework and creating a distinctive atmosphere that blends memorial art with a natural landscape. This balance between preservation and natural growth contributes to the cemetery's romantic and slightly gothic character.
Stone crosses were widely used in Victorian cemeteries to express Christian faith, hope of resurrection, and remembrance. Their weathered surfaces and varied designs illustrate both personal commemoration and broader cultural attitudes to death during the period of rapid urban and industrial expansion in London.
Photographed in natural daylight, this image captures the quiet, reflective quality of Highgate Cemetery and its role as both a place of remembrance and a significant heritage landscape. It is well suited for editorial use covering Victorian funerary traditions, religious symbolism, London history, and the visual character of historic cemeteries in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA23AH - This image shows a close-up view of a cast iron street plate marking the location of a fire hydrant in London. The embossed text reads Ham Baker & Co Ltd MWB Fire Hydrant 5635 ND Makers Westminster SW, identifying both the manufacturer and the hydrant reference number used by water and fire authorities.
Such plates form part of London's long-established municipal infrastructure, providing essential information for emergency services by indicating the position of underground water mains and hydrants. The initials MWB refer to the Metropolitan Water Board, which managed London's water supply for much of the twentieth century, placing the plate firmly within the capital's historic public utilities system.
The textured metal surface, worn edges, and oxidised colouring reflect decades of exposure to traffic, weather, and footfall, giving the plate a distinctive patina. Foundry-made street furniture like this is a characteristic but often overlooked element of London's streetscape, combining functional engineering with durable industrial design.
Photographed tightly to emphasise lettering, texture, and material detail, the image works well as editorial illustration of urban infrastructure, historic utilities, emergency services support systems, and the layered history embedded in everyday London street surfaces. It is particularly suited to features on British industrial heritage, public works, and the hidden systems that support city life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA23AK - This image shows a tall steel lattice telecommunications tower supporting multiple antennas and microwave dishes, commonly used as part of the UK's mobile phone and wireless communications network. The self-supporting lattice structure allows for significant height and load-bearing capacity, making it suitable for hosting equipment from multiple operators and technologies.
Panel antennas mounted at various levels are used to provide mobile phone coverage, typically supporting a combination of 2G, 3G, 4G, and increasingly 5G services. The presence of circular microwave dish antennas indicates point-to-point radio links, which are used to transmit large volumes of data between sites, particularly in rural or semi-rural locations where fibre-optic connections may be limited or used as backup resilience.
Lattice masts of this type are a common feature of national telecommunications infrastructure and are often upgraded repeatedly over time as mobile technology evolves. Their open steel framework design offers durability, ease of maintenance, and flexibility for adding new equipment as network demand increases.
Photographed from ground level against a partly cloudy blue sky, the image emphasises the height, complexity, and industrial character of modern communications infrastructure. It is well suited for editorial use illustrating mobile network expansion, digital connectivity, telecommunications engineering, rural broadband provision, and the physical structures that underpin everyday wireless communication in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA23AR - The exterior of The Highgate Society building at 11 South Grove in Highgate, north London. The red-brick property features arched windows and period detailing typical of the area's late-19th-century architecture and serves as the headquarters of the Highgate Society, a long-established local community and conservation organisation.
The Highgate Society is known for its involvement in protecting the historic character, green spaces, and built environment of Highgate, as well as representing local residents' interests in planning and development matters. Notice boards outside the building display community information and events, reinforcing its role as a focal point for civic engagement.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image documents the everyday presence of grassroots community organisations within London neighbourhoods. It illustrates themes of local activism, conservation, heritage stewardship, and the continuing use of historic buildings for contemporary civic purposes.

The stone displays the inscription Hornsey Parish 1859 beneath an earlier plaque marked S P × P 1791, reflecting successive phases of local administrative and parish history.
Such markers were used to denote historic parish boundaries and responsibilities, dating from a period when parishes played a central role in local governance, poor relief, and civic organisation before the development of modern London boroughs. Hornsey Parish once covered a wide area of what is now north London, including parts of Highgate.
Photographed in close-up, the image documents a surviving fragment of London's pre-modern administrative landscape. It highlights how traces of historic governance remain embedded within everyday streetscapes, offering insight into the layered history of local boundaries, identity, and urban development in the capital. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NAWG3H - The Lady Vanishes is a 1938 British mystery thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Margaret Lockwood and Michael Redgrave. Written by Sidney Gilliat and Frank Launder, based on the 1936 novel The Wheel Spins by Ethel Lina White, the film is about a beautiful English tourist travelling by train in continental Europe who discovers that her elderly travelling companion seems to have disappeared from the train. After her fellow passengers deny ever having seen the elderly lady, the young woman is helped by a young musicologist, the two proceeding to search the train for clues to the old lady's disappearance.
The Lady Vanishes was filmed at the Gainsborough Studios in Islington, London. Hitchcock caught Hollywood's attention with the film and moved to Hollywood soon after its release. Although the director's three previous efforts had done poorly at the box office, The Lady Vanishes was widely successful, and confirmed American producer David O. Selznick's belief that Hitchcock indeed had a future in Hollywood cinema.
The British Film Institute ranked The Lady Vanishes the 35th best British film of the 20th century. In 2017, a poll of 150 actors, directors, writers, producers and critics for Time Out magazine saw it ranked the 31st best British film ever. It is one of Hitchcock's most renowned British films, and the first of three screen versions of White's novel to date

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M1F5T4 - Avanti West Coast is a train operating company in the United Kingdom owned by FirstGroup (70%) and Trenitalia (30%) that operates the West Coast Partnership.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K6GW3J - Angus Steakhouse is a restaurant chain of steak houses in central London. In 2001, there were about 30 outlets
five remain open as of July 2020. The name reflects Aberdeen Angus, a common breed of beef cattle. Some restaurants still retain the former trading name, Aberdeen Steak Houses, on their signage, as of September 2016.
Aberdeen Steak Houses was started in the early 1960s by Reginald Eastwood (born c.1913), who had started in business aged 15 as an apprentice butcher.[citation needed] Eastwood's vision was for a more modern version of the earlier chop-house grills, and was influenced by American steak houses. The décor was opulent, with plate glass windows and red velour banquettes. Menus included trendy dishes like prawn cocktail and Black Forest gateau
By the 1970s, the group was focused more on tourist trade, with many branches in the West End to attract those attending theatre or musical shows
In 1984, the group was sold to Ali Salih, a Turkish businessman with a low public profile. The menu and décor showed little update since the 1960s, and the brand got a reputation as tourist traps for Its business, along with the wider UK beef industry, was hit in the 1990s by bovine spongiform encephalopathy,(BSE) then by foot and mouth disease in 2001.It made a loss of £3m in 2000
decline in American tourists after the September 11 attacks was also cited by Salih after the group went into receivership in October 2002, with £7m in debt.
In 2011, actor and comedian David Mitchell championed the cause of Aberdeen Angus Steak Houses in his opinion column in The Guardian, proposing that they be a nominee for a British World Heritage bid, citing them as being unique to British culture because of their proud heritage of serving shoe leather with Béarnaise sauce to neon-addled out-of-towners

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K6GYK8 - Paddington, also known as London Paddington, is a Central London railway terminus and London Underground station complex, located on Praed Street in the Paddington area. The site has been the London terminus of services provided by the Great Western Railway and its successors since 1838. Much of the main line station dates from 1854 and was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
Paddington is the London terminus of the Great Western Main Line
passenger services are primarily operated by Great Western Railway, which provides commuter and regional passenger services to west London and the Thames Valley region, as well as long-distance intercity services to South West England and South Wales. The station is also the eastern terminus for Heathrow Express and the western terminus for Elizabeth line services from Shenfield. Elizabeth line services also run through Paddington westwards to Reading, Heathrow Terminal 5, and Heathrow Terminal 4, and eastwards to Abbey Wood. Situated in fare zone 1, it has two separate tube stations providing connections to the Bakerloo, Circle, District, and Hammersmith & City lines. It is one of 11 London stations managed directly by Network Rail.
The station has been perennially popular for passengers and goods, particularly milk and parcels. Major upgrades took place in the 1870s, the 1910s and the 1960s, each trying to add additional platforms and space while trying to preserve the existing services and architecture as much as possible. Paddington was first served by London Underground trains in 1863, as the original western terminus of the Metropolitan Railway, the world's first underground railway. In the 20th century, suburban and commuter services appeared at Paddington as the urban sprawl of London moved westwards. Despite the numerous upgrades and rebuilding, plus damage sustained in particular during World War II, Brunel's original design is still recognisable.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M4MR0W - Sir Oswald Stoll (20 January 1866 9 January 1942) was an Australian-born British theatre manager and the co-founder of the Stoll Moss Group theatre company. He also owned Cricklewood Studios and film production company Stoll Pictures, which was one of the leading British studios of the Silent era. In 1912, he founded the Royal Variety Performance (originally Royal Command Performance) a now-annual charity show which benefits the Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund
Born in Melbourne, Australia as Oswald Gray, he moved to England with his mother, Adelaide McConnell Gray after the death of his father James Oswald Gray. When his mother remarried, he took his stepfather's last name, Stoll.
At a young age, Stoll left school to help his mother, Adelaide, manage first the Parthenon music hall in Liverpool, and later a regional theatre company. The company was a success, and Stoll began to buy or build city theatres. The theatre business made Stoll a wealthy man, and in 1898 he merged his business with that of competitor Edward Moss, to form Moss Empires. By 1905, almost every large town in Great Britain had an Empire or a Coliseum theatre, managed by Stoll. He continued to honour the roots of his business by installing his mother in each new box office, so she could take the first ticket sale
His film company Stoll Picture Productions was founded in April 1918, and acquired a one-stage studio in Surbiton which the company retained until 1923. A former aeroplane factory in Cricklewood was purchased in 1920 and converted to film use as Cricklewood Studios. Particularly associated with director Maurice Elvey, Stoll's company maintained a connection with the film industry until 1938 when the Cricklewood studio was closed
Stoll worked with the theatre architect Frank Matcham on several theatres, including The Hackney Empire

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M4W2M2 - The Elizabeth line is a high-frequency hybrid urbansuburban rail service in London and its suburbs. It runs services on dedicated infrastructure in central London from the Great Western Main Line west of Paddington to Abbey Wood and via Whitechapel to the Great Eastern Main Line near Stratford
along the Great Western Main Line from London Paddington to Reading and Heathrow Airport in the west
and along the Great Eastern Main Line between Stratford and Shenfield in the east. The service is named after Queen Elizabeth II, who officially opened the line on 17 May 2022 during her Platinum Jubilee year
passenger services started on 24 May 2022.
Under the project name of Crossrail, the system was approved in 2007, and construction began in 2009. Originally planned to open in 2018, the project was repeatedly delayed, including for several months as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In May 2015, existing commuter services on a section of one of the eastern branches, between Liverpool Street and Shenfield, were transferred to TfL Rail
this precursor service also took control of Heathrow Connect in May 2018, and some local services on the Paddington to Reading line in December 2019. These services were augmented by a new central section in May 2022, and rebranded as the Elizabeth line. The outer services were connected to the central section in November 2022. By May 2023, the central section will have up to 24 nine-carriage Class 345 trains per hour in each direction.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJGFND - Nellie Dean of Soho
The Nellie Dean is a public house at 89 Dean Street, on the corner of Carlisle Street. There has been a pub on this corner since at least 1748, when it was called the Highlander. (Some say there was a pub here before that, called the Dolphin, but this author has yet to see reliable evidence to support that claim.)
The pub was rebuilt in its present form in 1900, retaining the Highlander name. In the 1950s and 60s it was a favoured haunt of the bohemian crowd who also patronised the French House, as well as those working in the movie industry that used to be focused on Wardour Street.
In 1967 the pub became the Nellie Dean, a name inspired by the street on which it stands and honouring Gertrude Astbury, an early 20th-century music hall singer whose signature song was Nellie Dean', later the title of a musical in which she starred.
There's an old mill by the stream, Nellie Dean
Where we used to sit and dream, Nellie Dean
And the waters as they flow,
Seem to murmur sweet and low
You are my heart's desire
I love you, Nellie Dean.
Billy Clarke & Harry Armstrong (1916)
Astbury came from Longport, now part of Stoke-on-Trent, and was nicknamed the Staffordshire Cinderella. She took the stage name Gertie Gitana on account of her supposed Gypsy origins and Gitana' was adopted to mean banana' in cockney rhyming slang. When Gertie's fame faded, the 60s pop singer Wayne Fontana briefly took her place in the cockney fruiterer's lexicon.

It is printed in light blue on the Tube map and is one of the only two lines on the network to run completely underground, the other being the Waterloo & City line.
The line was constructed in the 1960s and was the first entirely new Underground line in London for 50 years. It was designed to reduce congestion on other lines, particularly the Piccadilly line and the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line. The first section, from Walthamstow Central to Highbury & Islington, opened in September 1968 and an extension to Warren Street followed in December. The line was completed to Victoria station in March 1969 and was opened by Queen Elizabeth II who rode a train from Green Park to Victoria. The southern extension to Brixton opened in 1971, and Pimlico station was added in 1972.
The Victoria line is operated using automatic train operation, but all trains have drivers. The 2009 Tube Stock replaced the original 1967 Tube Stock trains. The line serves 16 stations and all but Pimlico provide interchanges with other Transport for London or National Rail services. The line, the most intensively used on the Underground, is used by over 200 million passengers each year, making it the sixth-busiest tube line.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJG088 - On 14 June 2017, a high-rise fire broke out in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower block of flats in North Kensington, West London, at 00:54 BST. 72 people died, including two who later died in hospital, with more than 70 others being injured and 223 people escaping. It was the deadliest structural fire in the United Kingdom since the 1988 Piper Alpha oil-platform disaster and the worst UK residential fire since World War II.
The fire was started by an electrical fault in a refrigerator on the fourth floor. It spread rapidly up the building's exterior, bringing fire and smoke to all the residential floors. This was due to the building's new cladding and the external insulation, since the air gap between them enabled the stack effect. The fire burned for about 60 hours before finally being extinguished. More than 250 London Fire Brigade firefighters and 70 fire engines from stations across London were involved in efforts to control the fire and rescue residents. More than 100 London Ambulance Service crews on at least 20 ambulances attended the scene, joined by specialist paramedics from the Ambulance Service's Hazardous Area Response Team. The Metropolitan Police and London's Air Ambulance also assisted the rescue effort.
Five years after 72 people lost their lives in the Grenfell Tower fire, which broke out on June 14, 2017, the UK government has announced plans to ban the type of cladding used to cover the external walls of the North Kensington high-rise. These revised building regulations are to be put into effect in December 2022.
The inquiry into the disaster concluded, in its first report in 2019, that this cladding polyethylene-filled aluminium composite panels, to be specific was responsible for the fire spreading so quickly..

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JJG0DC - Baker Street is a London Underground station at the junction of Baker Street and the Marylebone Road in the City of Westminster. It is one of the original stations of the Metropolitan Railway (MR), the world's first underground railway, opened on 10 January 1863.
The station is in Travelcard Zone 1 and is served by five lines. On the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines it is between Great Portland Street and Edgware Road. On the Metropolitan line it is between Great Portland Street and Finchley Road. On the Bakerloo line it is between Regent's Park and Marylebone, and on the Jubilee line it is between St John's Wood and Bond Street.
Location
The station has entrances on Baker Street, Chiltern Street (ticket holders only) and Marylebone Road. Nearby attractions include Regent's Park, Lord's Cricket Ground, the Sherlock Holmes Museum and Madame Tussauds.
Baker Street station is the combination of three separate stations, with several booking offices throughout its operational years. Major changes took place in 1891-93 and 191012. The first part is the Circle Line station, which has its two platforms now used by the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines. They are situated on a roughly east-to-west alignment beneath Marylebone Road, spanning approximately the stretch between Upper Baker Street and Allsop Place. This was part of the original Metropolitan Railway from Bishop's Road (now Paddington (Circle and Hammersmith & City lines) station to Farringdon Street (now Farringdon) which opened on 10 January 1863.
The platforms serving the main branch of the Metropolitan line towards Harrow, Uxbridge and beyond are located within the triangle formed by Marylebone Road, Upper Baker Street and Allsop Place, following the alignment of Allsop place. This station is the second section which opened on 13 April 1868 by the Metropolitan & St. John's Wood Railway. This was later absorbed by the Metropolitan Railway, which is usually known to them as Baker Street East station.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JKMPM6 - Trellick Tower is a Grade II* listed tower block on the Cheltenham Estate in Kensal Green, northwest London. Opened in 1972, it had been commissioned by the Greater London Council and designed in the Brutalist style by architect Ernő Goldfinger. The tower was planned to replace outdated social accommodation, and designed as a follow up to Goldfinger's earlier Balfron Tower in East London. It was the last major project he worked on, and featured various space-saving designs, along with a separate access tower containing a plant room.
High-rise apartments and Brutalist architecture were falling out of favour by the time the tower was completed, and it became a magnet for crime, vandalism, drug abuse and prostitution. Its fortunes gradually improved in the 1980s after the establishment of a residents' association. Security measures were put in place and a concierge was employed, which led to lower crime levels. By the 1990s, the tower had become a desirable place to live, and although it still contains predominantly social housing, demand for private flats has remained high. A local landmark, it has been Grade II* listed since 1998, and has retained its distinctive concrete facade as a result. A fire broke out in 2017, but the concrete structure meant damage was limited, unlike the nearby Grenfell Tower. Trellick Tower has featured on film and television several times.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07A7R - Westminster is a London Underground station in the City of Westminster. It is served by the Circle, District and Jubilee lines. On the Circle and District lines, the station is between St James's Park and Embankment, and on the Jubilee line it is between Green Park and Waterloo. It is in Travelcard Zone 1. The station is located at the corner of Bridge Street and Victoria Embankment and is close to the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Parliament Square, Whitehall, Westminster Bridge, and the London Eye. Also close by are Downing Street, the Cenotaph, Westminster Millennium Pier, the Treasury, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and the Supreme Court.
The station is in two parts: sub-surface platforms opened in 1868 by the District Railway (DR) as part of the company's first section of the Inner Circle route and deep level platforms opened in 1999 as part of the Jubilee line extension from Green Park to Stratford. A variety of underground and main line services have operated over the sub-surface tracks, but the original station was completely rebuilt in conjunction with the construction of the deep level platforms and Portcullis House, which sits above the station.
The station was opened as Westminster Bridge on 24 December 1868 by the steam-operated District Railway (DR) (now the District line) when the railway opened the first section of its line from South Kensington.
As part of the Transported by Design programme of activities, on 15 October 2015, after two months of public voting, Westminster tube station was elected by Londoners as one of the 10 favourite transport design icons.
The station is in London fare zone 1. On the District and Circle lines, the station is between St James's Park and Embankment, and, on the Jubilee line, it is between Green Park and Waterloo.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07A7Y - Whitehall is a road and area in the City of Westminster, Central London. The road forms the first part of the A3212 road from Trafalgar Square to Chelsea. It is the main thoroughfare running south from Trafalgar Square towards Parliament Square. The street is recognised as the centre of the Government of the United Kingdom and is lined with numerous departments and ministries, including the Ministry of Defence, Horse Guards and the Cabinet Office. Consequently, the name Whitehall is used as a metonym for the British civil service and government, and as the geographic name for the surrounding area.
The name was taken from the Palace of Whitehall that was the residence of Kings Henry VIII through to William III, before its destruction by fire in 1698
only the Banqueting House has survived. Whitehall was originally a wide road that led to the front of the palace
the route to the south was widened in the 18th century following the destruction of the palace.
As well as government buildings, the street is known for its memorial statues and monuments, including the UK's primary war memorial, the Cenotaph. South of the Cenotaph the thoroughfare becomes Parliament Street.
The name Whitehall was used for several buildings in the Tudor period. It either referred to a building made of light stone, or as a general term for any festival building. This included the Royal Palace of Whitehall, which in turn gave its name to the street
Numerous London bus routes run along Whitehall, including 12, 24, 88, 159 and 453
Downing Street leads off the south-west end of Whitehall, just above Parliament Street. It was named after Sir George Downing, who built a row of houses along the street around 1680 leading west from Whitehall.
Richmond House, at No. 79, has held the Department of Health since 1987. The building is scheduled to be a temporary debating chamber from 2025, while the Houses of Parliament undergo a refurbishment and modernisation programme

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M0KX3W - The Electric Cinema is a cinema in Notting Hill, London. One of the oldest working film theatres in Britain, it became Britain's first black-owned cinema in 1993, and remained black-owned until it was sold in 2000.
As of 2022, after a couple of changes of hands, the cinema is also known as the Electric Portobello, with a second screen at the old Television Centre at White City called the Electric White City
The Electric Cinema first opened in London's Portobello Road on 24 February 1910. It was one of the first buildings in Britain to be designed specifically for motion picture exhibition, and was one of the first buildings in the vicinity to be supplied with electricity. Its first film was Henry VIII, screened on 23 February 1911.
The venue opened 18 years before talkies became the norm, so had no facilities to broadcast sound. The cinema was soon eclipsed by the huge picture palaces that became fashionable during the 1930s but, despite being shuttered for brief periods, it has remained in almost continual use until the present day.
Designed by architect Gerald Seymour Valentin in the Edwardian Baroque style, it originally opened as the Electric Cinema Theatre, with 600 seats. During World War I an angry mob attacked the Electric, believing that its German-born manager was signalling to Zeppelin raiders from the roof, after nearby Arundel Gardens was hit by a bomb dropped from a Zeppelin
Later, in 1932, the Electric became the Imperial Playhouse cinema, though by this time the Portobello Road area had become run down, along with the rest of Notting Hill. During this time, the venue's nickname among locals was The Bughole.
During WWII the venue was attended by up to 4000 per week, despite the Luftwaffe's night-time bombing raids.[9] During the late 1940s the notorious mass murderer John Christie (18991953) of nearby 10 Rillington Place is said to have worked at the Electric as a projectionist
It is a Grade II* Listed building.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M108DB - Coal Drops Yard is a shopping complex and privately owned public space that forms part of the King's Cross Central development scheme in London, England. The development was designed by Thomas Heatherwick and opened in October 2018
The two Victorian coal drops sheds were used to receive coal from South Yorkshire and trans-ship it to narrowboats on the Regents Canal and to horse-drawn carts
coal drops were redundant and fell into decay. They were used as warehouse units
one was gutted by fire in 1985 and another used by Bagley's nightclub, which closed in 2007. The night clubs complemented a vibrant night life of easy drug access, raves and prostitution.
The Regent's Canal was named in 1820 after the Prince Regent, who became George IV the same year. After his demise, the Kings Cross monument was raised at the junction of New Road and Battlebridge Road (Euston Road and York Way)
In 1986 the rave scene started in London. Disused warehouses were used to stage illegal raves, a form of partying fuelled by House music from Chicago and the illicit drug ecstasy. The scene developed and spawned several legal clubs such as The Clink, Shoom and Heaven and by the early-to-mid 1990s became centred on three bars in King's Cross. There was Billy Reilly's bar, 'Fabric' under the arches of the Coal Offices (which inspired a successor club, also called Fabric), 'The Cross' and 'Bagley's', which took over three floors at the southern end of the Eastern Coal Drops
Argent Group, the overall developer for the King's Cross Central site, appointed Thomas Heatherwick as architect for the redevelopment of the Coal Drop Yards as a retail park in 2014. Heatherwick worked in conjunction with engineers Arup, and the plans were approved in December 2015. BAM Nuttall undertook the construction work, which started in February 2016, following a two-year pre-construction phase to survey the condition of the Victorian era buildings and carry out demolition work as necessary.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K16AW8 - Camden Collective is a registered charity offering free hot-desking space and subsidised offices for creative start-ups in the heart of Camden Town. We take on temporary leases of empty building and bring them back to life, filling them with an ever-growing community of creative young people. We give start-ups the chance to take risks, experiment, and grow in a low-cost way.
The Collective journey started 10 years ago. Since 2009, it has occupied 18 spaces and has introduced various projects, such as: pop-up shops, free courses, accelerators, commissioning public realm projects, free events, and the Camden Create Festival. We have an evolving model, but our community of like-minded individuals are at the heart of what we do, as well as the entrepreneurs and stakeholders who help us to grow and support our next exciting stages of development.
Camden Collective is run by Camden Town Unlimited, the Business Improvement District for Camden Town. In the past, we relied on grants and raising revenue to keep up our activities. Now we're fully self-sufficient, with income from lockable offices paying for free hot-desking, running costs of the project, and any renovations needed to maintain our hub, or create new ones
Camden Collective is just one of Camden Town Unlimited's forward-thinking projects. We're the same team that's behind the Camden Highline
a project transforming the disused railway between Camden Town and King's Cross, and Euston Town
a business improvement district with a focus on air quality, transport and identity. We're also the co-founders of Alternative Camden
a new type of innovation district for Camden.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M107K7 - The main bandstand in The Regent's Park is located on Holme Green, between the boating lake and Inner Circle. It was moved from Richmond Park to The Regent's Park in the 1970s.
On 20th July 1982, the bandstand was the target of a terrorist attack by the IRA. Seven bandsmen were killed and a further 24 injured during a concert by the band of the Royal Green Jackets. Eight members of the public, who were watching the performance, were also taken to hospital with injuries sustained in the bombing.
Today there is a small memorial plaque on the base of the bandstand that commemorates the seven bandsmen who were killed. Each year the attack's survivors, and the families of those who were killed, gather here for a short but poignant memorial service.
Two years after the bombing, the composer George Lloyd wrote Royal Parks For Brass Band, the second movement of which, In Memoriam is dedicated to the bandsmen who died. The piece still features in many band repertoires.

Our mission is to promote life chances, learning and healthy living through canal-based and community activities that are stimulating, inclusive and accessible.
Canoeing, kayaking and canal boating are core to our work and we strive to tackle disadvantage, challenge exclusion and support the more vulnerable members of our community through all that we do. Our raft of adventurous recreation, outdoor education and training initiatives improve health and wellbeing, nurture life and social skills and bring people together through active participation - regardless of their ability or personal circumstances.
We offer services for young people, adults, elders and SEND (special educational needs and disability) groups of all ages, along with activities run by and for the LGBTQ+ community.
We also partner with mainstream and specialist schools, Pupil Referral Units, frontline and voluntary support services to deliver projects that link with the curriculum, help address challenging behaviours or improve people's wellbeing and longer-term life chances.
Our iconic, fully-accessible castle home offers affordable community space for projects and events, changing and 'wet' areas for paddlesport sessions and a wheelchair-friendly bankside for easy access to the canal and our boat fleet - opening up the waterway for all to enjoy.
Our free and heavily subsidised projects allow everyone to benefit from our unique approach to training and adventure on the Regent's Canal!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M1MD7G - Regent's Canal is a canal across an area just north of central London, England. It provides a link from the Paddington Arm of the Grand Union Canal, 550 yards (500 m) north-west of Paddington Basin in the west, to the Limehouse Basin and the River Thames in east London. The canal is 8.6 miles (13.8 km) long
First proposed by Thomas Homer in 1802 as a link from the Paddington arm of the then Grand Junction Canal (opened in 1801) with the River Thames at Limehouse, the Regent's Canal was built during the early 19th century after an Act of Parliament was passed in 1812. Noted architect and town planner John Nash was a director of the company
in 1811 he had produced a masterplan for George IV, then Prince Regent, to redevelop a large area of central north London as a result, the Regent's Canal was included in the scheme, running for part of its distance along the northern edge of Regent's Park.
As with many Nash projects, the detailed design was passed to one of his assistants, in this case James Morgan, who was appointed chief engineer of the canal company. Work began on 14 October 1812. The first section from Paddington to Camden Town opened in 1816 and included a 251-metre (274 yd) long tunnel under Maida Hill east of an area now known as 'Little Venice', and a much shorter tunnel, just 48 metres (52 yd) long, under Lisson Grove. The Camden to Limehouse section, including the 886-metre (969 yd) long Islington Tunnel and the Regent's Canal Dock (used to transfer cargo from seafaring vessels to canal barges today known as Limehouse Basin), opened four years later on 1 August 1820. Various intermediate basins were also constructed (e.g.: Cumberland Basin to the east of Regent's Park, Battlebridge Basin (close to King's Cross, London) and City Road Basin). Many other basins such as Wenlock Basin, Kingsland Basin, St. Pancras Stone and Coal Basin, and one in front of the Great Northern Railway's Granary were also built, and some of these survive.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M1MDWJ - The red telephone box, a telephone kiosk for a public telephone designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, is a familiar sight on the streets of the United Kingdom, Malta, Bermuda and Gibraltar.
Despite a reduction in their numbers in recent years, the traditional British red telephone kiosk can still be seen in many places throughout the UK, and in current or former British colonies around the world. The colour red was chosen to make them easy to spot.
From 1926 onwards, the fascias of the kiosks were emblazoned with a prominent crown, representing the British government. The red phone box is often seen as a British cultural icon throughout the world. In 2006, the K2 telephone box was voted one of Britain's top 10 design icons. In 2009, the K2 was selected by the Royal Mail for their British Design Classics commemorative postage stamp issue
The red telephone box was the result of a competition in 1924 to design a kiosk that would be acceptable to the London Metropolitan Boroughs which had hitherto resisted the Post Office's effort to erect K1 kiosks on their streets.[10]
The Royal Fine Art Commission was instrumental in the choice of the British standard kiosk. Because of widespread dissatisfaction with the GPO's design, the Metropolitan Boroughs Joint Standing Committee organised a competition for a superior one in 1923, but the results were disappointing.
the Fine Arts Commission judged the competition and selected the design submitted by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. The invitation had come at the time when Scott had been made a trustee of Sir John Soane's Museum: his design for the competition was in the classical style, but topped with a dome reminiscent of those designed by Soane for his own family mausoleum in St Pancras Old Churchyard, and for the mausoleum for Sir Francis Bourgeois at Dulwich Picture Gallery, both in London. However, Gavin Stamp thinks it unlikely that Scott was directly inspired by either of these precedents

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AE02FA - Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, KG, GCB, GCH, PC, FRS (1 May 1769 14 September 1852) was a Anglo-Irish statesman, soldier, and Tory politician who was one of the leading military and political figures of 19th-century Britain, serving twice as prime minister of the United Kingdom. He is among the commanders who won and ended the Napoleonic Wars when the Seventh Coalition defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
Wellesley was born in Dublin into the Protestant Ascendancy in Ireland. He was commissioned as an ensign in the British Army in 1787, serving in Ireland as aide-de-camp to two successive lords lieutenant of Ireland. He was also elected as a member of Parliament in the Irish House of Commons. He was a colonel by 1796 and saw action in the Netherlands and in India, where he fought in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War at the Battle of Seringapatam. He was appointed governor of Seringapatam and Mysore in 1799 and, as a newly appointed major-general, won a decisive victory over the Maratha Confederacy at the Battle of Assaye in 1803.
Wellesley rose to prominence as a general during the Peninsular campaign of the Napoleonic Wars, and was promoted to the rank of field marshal after leading the allied forces to victory against the French Empire at the Battle of Vitoria in 1813. Following Napoleon's exile in 1814, he served as the ambassador to France and was granted a dukedom. During the Hundred Days in 1815, he commanded the allied army which, together with a Prussian Army under Field Marshal Gebhard von Blücher, defeated Napoleon at Waterloo. Wellington's battle record is exemplary
he ultimately participated in some 60 battles during the course of his military career.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AE02FC - Frank Pick Hon. RIBA (23 November 1878 7 November 1941) was a British transport administrator. After qualifying as a solicitor in 1902, he worked at the North Eastern Railway, before moving to the Underground Electric Railways Company of London (UERL) in 1906. He was chief executive officer and vice-chairman of the London Passenger Transport Board from its creation in 1933 until 1940.
Pick had a strong interest in design and its use in public life. He steered the development of the London Underground's corporate identity by commissioning eye-catching commercial art, graphic design and modern architecture, establishing a highly recognisable brand, including the first versions of the roundel and typeface still used today.
Pick's interest extended beyond his own organisation. He was a founding member and later served as President of the Design and Industries Association. He was also the first chairman of the Council for Art and Industry and regularly wrote and lectured on design and urban planning subjects

One of the 1980s most recognisable pieces of architecture, the Lloyd's building demonstrates many of the key traits of the high-tech architecture style that emerged in the UK in the late 1960s.
The building, which was built as the headquarters of Lloyd's of London one of the world's largest insurance firms is distinguished by its radical inside-out aesthetic that sees all its building services banished to its exterior in order to create uninterrupted spaces inside.
This is similar to the Centre Pompidou, which Rogers completed with Renzo Piano in the late 1970s, and has equally uncluttered and highly flexible internal spaces.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ABY9A2 - The Whitechapel Bell Foundry was a business in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. At the time of the closure of its Whitechapel premises, it was the oldest manufacturing company in Great Britain.[1] The bell foundry primarily made church bells and their fittings and accessories, although it also provided single tolling bells, carillon bells and handbells. The foundry was notable for being the original manufacturer of the Liberty Bell, a famous symbol of American independence, and for re-casting Big Ben, which rings from the north clock tower (the Elizabeth Tower) at the Houses of Parliament in London.
The Whitechapel premises are a Grade II* listed building. The foundry closed on 12 June 2017, after nearly 450 years of bell-making and 250 years at its Whitechapel site,[2] with the final bell cast given to the Museum of London along with other artefacts used in the manufacturing process,[3] and the building has been sold.[4][5]
Following the sale of the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, the bell patents were sold to the bell-hanging company, Whites of Appleton in Oxfordshire, with whom the foundry has had a business relationship for 197 years, and rights to tower bell production are now under the ownership of Westley Group Ltd. Production of presentation and hand bells will continue under the name Bells of Whitechapel Ltd.
Housing secretary Robert Jenrick has temporarily halted 31/44 Architects' plans to revamp the site of a Grade II*-listed bell foundry in east London, which include a boutique hotel
Last month the practice narrowly won approval from Tower Hamlets Council to revamp the historic Whitechapel Bell Foundry building, despite the two applications receiving more than 750 objections.
But Jenrick has now issued a holding directive preventing the borough from signing off permission.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHBJW7 - Based in The London Fields area, Three Sods Brewery is a small independently owned Brewery and Tap Room. We Brew a range of Hop forward Pale Ales and IPAs as well as seasonal beers
This beer is a collaboration with the anti-fascist organisation Hope Not Hate. This creates a classic pale ale with a lot of body and citrus flavours
Three Sods Brewery has been brewing in the heart of East London since 2011. The three original sods Dave, Adam and Jordan came together through a mutual love of beer.
The name comes from prohibition-era Ireland when bootleggers of illegal Poitín would leave a sod of peat, painted white, outside their door so people knew where to find their booze.
The Sods family has grown considerably in recent years and has refused to sacrifice on quality. Our Head Brewer, Rich, and our Sales Director, Wilson, share the same passion we had when we set up Three Sods 9 years ago. Our Beers are in pubs all over the UK and we've recently launched our online shop and new Taproom in London Fields. Come and join us for a pint!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JGXP0E - Santander Cycles (formerly Barclays Cycle Hire) is a public bicycle hire scheme in London in the United Kingdom. The scheme's bicycles are popularly known as Boris Bikes, after Boris Johnson who was Mayor of London when the scheme began operating.
The operation of the scheme was initially contracted by Transport for London (TfL) to Serco. Bikes and docking stations are provided by 8D Technologies. The scheme is sponsored, with Santander UK being the main sponsor from April 2015. Barclays Bank was the first sponsor, from 2010 to March 2015.
Credit for developing and enacting the scheme has been a source of debate. Johnson has taken credit for the plan, although the initial concept was announced by his predecessor Ken Livingstone, during the latter's term in office. Livingstone said that the programme would herald a cycling and walking transformation in London and Johnson said that he hoped the bikes would become as common as black cabs and red buses in the capital.
A study showed cyclists using the scheme are three times less likely to be injured per trip than cyclists in London as a whole, possibly due to motorists giving cycle hire users more road space than they do other cyclists, although trips by hire bike users seemed to be much shorter on average. Customer research in 2013 showed that 49 per cent of Cycle Hire members say that the scheme has prompted them to start cycling in London.
As of July 2022, more than 111.2 million journeys had been made using the cycles, with the record for cycle hires in a single day being 73,000.
In October 2022, TfL introduced new e-bikes to the scheme, the first docked e-bikes in London

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DFEA - The Old Vic is a theatre located just south-east of Waterloo Station in London on the corner of The Cut and Waterloo Road. Established in 1818 as the Royal Coburg Theatre, it was taken over by Emma Cons in 1880 when it was known formally as the Royal Victoria Hall. In 1898, a niece of Cons, Lilian Baylis assumed management and began a series of Shakespeare productions in 1914. The building was damaged in 1940 during air raids and it became a Grade II* listed building in 1951 after it reopened.
It was also the name of a repertory company that was based at the theatre and formed the core of the National Theatre of Great Britain on its formation in 1963, under Laurence Olivier. The National Theatre remained at the Old Vic until new premises were constructed on the South Bank, opening in 1976. The Old Vic then became the home of Prospect Theatre Company, at that time a highly successful touring company which staged such acclaimed productions as Derek Jacobi's Hamlet. However, with the withdrawal of funding for the company by the Arts Council of Great Britain in 1980 for breaching its touring obligations, Prospect disbanded in 1981. The theatre underwent complete refurbishment in 1985. In 2003, Kevin Spacey was appointed as new artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre Company which received considerable media attention. In 2015, Matthew Warchus was appointed the new Artistic Director.
On May 26, 2022, Spacey was charged by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the United Kingdom with four counts of sexual assault against three complainants. The alleged offenses occurred between 2005 and 2013 in London and Gloucestershire. According to the Crown Prosecution Service, it would be possible to formally charge Spacey only if he entered England or Wales, which would entail extradition if Spacey refused to do so voluntarily. Nevertheless, in a statement to Good Morning America on May 31, 2022, Spacey said that he would voluntarily appear in the U.K. as soon as can be arrange

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DJ7B0D - Clapham Junction railway station is near St John's Hill in the south-west of Battersea in the London Borough of Wandsworth. Although it is in Battersea, the area around the station is commonly identified as Clapham Junction.
Many routes from London's two busiest termini, London Waterloo and London Victoria, funnel through the station making it one of the busiest in Europe by number of trains using it, more than one hundred an hour outside peak periods.
Each day about 2,000 trains, most stopping, pass through the station, more than through any other station in Europe.[5] At peak times 180 trains per hour pass through of which 117 stop. It is not the busiest station by number of passengers, most of whom (about 430,000 on a weekday, of which 135,000 are at rush hours) pass through. Interchanges make some 40% of the activity and on that basis too it is the busiest station in the UK.[6]
In 2011, the station had three entrances, all with staffed ticket offices, though only the south-east entrance is open 24 hours a day. The most heavily used of the three, this leads from St John's Hill via a small indoor shopping centre, into a subway some 15 ft (4.6 m) wide that connects to the eastern ends of all platforms.
The north entrance, which has restricted opening hours, leads from Grant Road to the same subway. The subway is crowded during rush hours, with the ticket barriers at the ends are pinch points.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H2HA2D - The Bank of England, formally the Governor and Company of the Bank of England, is the central bank of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the model on which most modern central banks have been based. Established in 1694, it is the second oldest central bank in operation today, after Sveriges Riksbank. The Bank of England is the world's 8th oldest bank. It was established to act as the English Government's banker and is still one of the bankers for the Government of the United Kingdom. The Bank was privately owned by stockholders from its foundation in 1694 until it was nationalised in 1946.
In 1998, it became an independent public organization, wholly owned by the Treasury Solicitor on behalf of the government, with independence in setting monetary policy.
The Bank is one of eight banks authorised to issue banknotes in the United Kingdom, but it has a monopoly on the issue of banknotes in England and Wales and regulates the issue of banknotes by commercial banks in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The Bank's Monetary Policy Committee has a devolved responsibility for managing monetary policy. The Treasury has reserve powers to give orders to the committee if they are required in the public interest and by extreme economic circumstances, but such orders must be endorsed by Parliament within 28 days. The Bank's Financial Policy Committee held its first meeting in June 2011 as a macro prudential regulator to oversee regulation of the UK's financial sector.
The Bank's headquarters have been in London's main financial district, the City of London, on Threadneedle Street, since 1734. It is sometimes known by the metonym The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street or The Old Lady, a name taken from the satirical cartoon by James Gillray in 1797. The busy road junction outside is known as Bank junction.
As a regulator and central bank, the Bank of England has not offered consumer banking services for many years.

4 is the smallest squared prime (p2) and the only even number in this form. It has an aliquot sum of 3 which is itself prime. The aliquot sequence of 4 has 4 members (4, 3, 1, 0) and is accordingly the first member of the 3-aliquot tree.
A number is a multiple of 4 if its last two digits are a multiple of 4. For example, 1092 is a multiple of 4 because 92 = 4\u00d723.
Only one number has an aliquot sum of 4 and that is squared prime 9.
A four-sided plane figure is a quadrilateral (quadrangle) or square, sometimes also called a tetragon. A circle divided by 4 makes right angles. Because of it, four (4) is the base number of plane (mathematics). Four cardinal directions, four seasons, duodecimal system, and vigesimal system are based on four.
A solid figure with four faces is a tetrahedron. The regular tetrahedron is the simplest Platonic solid. A tetrahedron, which can also be called a 3-simplex, has four triangular faces and four vertices. It is the only self-dual regular polyhedron.
Four-dimensional space is the highest-dimensional space featuring more than three convex regular figures.
In Buddhism the four Noble Truths are:
Dukkha \u2013 The Noble Truth of Suffering
Samudaya \u2013 The Noble Truth of the Cause of Suffering
Nirodha \u2013 The Noble Truth of the Cessation of Suffering
Magga \u2013 The Noble Truth of the Path leading to the Cessation of Suffering
The Chinese, Vietnamese, the Korean and the Japanese are superstitious about the number four because it is a homonym for 'Death' in their languages.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8FBCH - The Bell Punch Company was a British company manufacturing a variety of business machines, most notably several generations of public transport ticket machines and the worlds first desktop electronic calculator, the Sumlock ANITA.
History
The company was established in July 1878 in order to acquire the patent rights to an American hand-registering ticket punch that was being used by a number of British tramway companies. By 1884 they had begun development of their own range of ticket printing machines. In 1891 they began supplying ticketing machines for London General Omnibus Company. From then until its demise, Bell Punch would have an unbroken history of supplying successive London bus companies, along with many other bus operators throughout the country.
The first half of the 20th century saw the company expand into different markets, including in cinema and theatre ticketing, horse race totalisator ticket machines, taximeters and mechanical calculators.
In the Second World War the company developed and manufactured a variety of military equipment, including mechanical aircraft navigation computers and naval gunnery sighting and ranging devices.
In 1958 it began development of a desktop electronic calculator, which came to market as the Sumlock ANITA in 1961. The calculator division was established as Sumlock Anita Electronics Ltd in 1966. It was to become the largest supplier of calculators in the U.K., with sales of £4.5 million in 1971. In 1972 they developed one of the first electronic pocket calculators, but were beaten to the market by Sinclair Radionics due to lack of management enthusiasm for the project. In 1973 Sumlock Anita Electronics were acquired by Rockwell International who closed down the operation in 1976.
The remainder of the business continued to be owned by the then parent company, Control Systems Ltd which was acquired the Swedish Incentive Group in the early 1980s which resulted in the break-up of the company

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4531312643 - 'The red telephone box, was a british public telephone kiosk designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Its often still seen throughout streets of the UK, Malta, Bermuda and Gibraltar despite now being an endangered species. Red boxes can still be seen in many places and current or ex-British Colonies around the world. The colour red was aparently chosen to make them easy to spot.
The red telephone box was the result of a competition in 1924 to design a kiosk that would be acceptable to the London Metropolitan Boroughs which had hitherto resisted the Post Office's effort to erect its early ugly K1 kiosks on their streets. Despite The Birmingham Civic Society trying to railroad proceedings with a concrete design of its own.
The organisers invited entries from three respected architects and, along with the designs from the Post Office and from The Birmingham Civic Society, the Fine Arts Commission judged the competition and selected the design submitted by Giles Gilbert Scott. The invitation had come at the time when Scott had been made a trustee of Sir John Soane's Museum \u2014 his design for the competition was in the classical style, but topped with a dome reminiscent of Soane's self-designed mausoleums in St Pancras' Old Churchyard and Dulwich Picture Gallery, London. (The original wooden prototypes of the entries were later put into public service at under-cover sites around London. That of Scott's design is the only one known to survive and is still where it was placed all those years ago, in the entrance arch to the Royal Academy.)
The Post Office chose to make Scott's winning design in cast iron (Scott had suggested mild steel) and to paint it red (Scott had suggested silver, with a 'greeny-blue' interior) and, with other minor changes of detail, it was brought into service as the Kiosk No.2 or K2. From 1926 K2 was deployed in and around London and the K1 continued to be erected elsewhere. A cheaper K3 was also designed for intended rolout nationwide.
K4 (designed by the Post Office Engineering Department in 1927) incorporated a post box and machines for buying postage stamps on the exterior. Only 50 kiosks of this design were built. I believe Warrington still has one of these near Bridgefoot.
In 1935 the K6 (kiosk number six) was designed to commemorate the silver jubilee of King George V and this spread until 1970 throughout the UK. The futuristic (for the time and fairly unloved) K8 was introduced in 1970.
There was never a K9. This name was taken by the fictional robotic dogs in Doctor Who, and its also seen in the spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures
The red telephone box is indeed a potent symbol of Britain (along with red routemaster buses) and lightweight replica K6 telephone kiosks are manufactured as flat-packs by commercial vendors and are shipped around the world for installation in such places as bars, restaurants and offices. The British red phone box, a definite classic.
