Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EPRP3C - An everyday early evening scene inside Warrington Bus Interchange in Warrington town centre, Cheshire, England. Passengers wait near stands D and F beneath the bright lighting of the modern covered concourse, while a yellow electric bus is visible through the glazed boarding area. Some travellers stand talking, others sit on metal benches checking mobile phones, and a bicycle has been left beside the seating. The mix of young people, commuters and other local passengers records the ordinary rhythm of public transport as daytime activity moves into evening services.
The spacious terminal has a pale tiled floor, red tactile and contrasting paving strips, tall supporting columns, glass screening and a wide glazed frontage admitting natural light. Stand markers, timetable displays, information panels, litter facilities and sheltered seating illustrate the practical design of a contemporary town centre transport interchange. The image also shows how buses, pedestrians and cyclists meet within one urban mobility hub.
Warrington Bus Interchange is on Winwick Street, close to Warrington Central railway station and Golden Square shopping centre. It is the focal point of the borough's bus network, with routes connecting the centre to surrounding neighbourhoods and destinations across Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and beyond. Warrington Borough Council owns and manages the facility, while Warrington's Own Buses operates most local services.
Warrington's Own Buses introduced a fleet of battery-electric vehicles during 2024, supporting lower-emission public transport and the wider decarbonisation of local travel. The yellow vehicle at the stand reflects this transition towards quieter, cleaner urban bus services. This candid interior photograph suits themes including everyday British life, evening commuting, young passengers, sustainable mobility, municipal transport, accessible travel, transport infrastructure and town centre connectivity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ENF26K - Street scene at Knutsford Makers Market in Cheshire, England, showing Princess Street and Silk Mill Street filled with independent stalls, shoppers and families during the monthly Sunday market. The image captures a lively town-centre retail and leisure event, with black and white market gazebos, framed artwork, craft displays, plants, flowers, visitors pushing a pram and people browsing on a pedestrianised shopping street. The overcast sky and soft daylight suggest a mild but grey market day, typical of north west England, while the brick buildings, shopfronts, hanging bunting, traditional upper-storey windows and the visible street layout give the photograph a strong sense of place. Knutsford Makers Market is promoted as an outdoor artisan market held on the first Sunday of the month, bringing Princess Street and Silk Mill Street alive with art, craft, food, drink, coffee, music, street food and entertainment. The picture is useful for editorial and commercial themes around high street revival, independent retail, local enterprise, visitor economy, Cheshire market towns, weekend shopping, community events, small businesses, makers, artists, food traders, town-centre footfall and alternatives to out-of-town retail. Knutsford itself is a well-known Cheshire market town with an attractive historic centre, independent shops and links to nearby Tatton Park, making the market part of a wider destination offer for residents, day trippers and visitors from Greater Manchester and Cheshire. Visible details include the 20 mph street sign, planters, display easels, stall canopies, shop signs, decorative bunting and a mix of adults, children and families moving through the market. The image can support stories about local shopping habits, artisan markets, public realm use, sustainable town-centre events, small traders, outdoor retail, place marketing and how regular markets help animate traditional high streets beyond normal weekday shopping.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EME6HD - 6 June 2026, this live music photograph shows Black Desert performing on stage at Warrington Music Festival in Warrington town centre, Cheshire, England. The image captures the young North West alternative or grunge band in a full band set-up with vocalist and guitarist at centre stage, drummer behind, bassist to the right and another guitarist to the left, framed by amplifiers, monitors, lighting rigs and a large screen displaying the band's name. Festival branding for Warrington Music Fest is visible on both sides of the stage, placing the performance within a free public town-centre event designed to draw crowds into the local retail and leisure area. The stage appears to be a temporary outdoor festival installation, with surrounding buildings visible beyond the performance area, helping to root the image in an urban shopping and civic setting rather than a conventional indoor venue. The scene has value as a documentary image of emerging grassroots music culture in the North West, showing how local festivals give developing bands a platform in front of a broader public audience. It is also useful for editorial themes around youth culture, live entertainment, gig promotion, town-centre regeneration, community events, local identity and the role of arts programming in boosting footfall for shops, bars and hospitality businesses. Warrington Music Festival has become part of the town's wider seasonal events offer, using central public space to showcase local and regional acts and to strengthen the area's cultural profile. For picture buyers, the combination of a named band, readable stage screen, instruments, performance energy and clearly branded event context makes this suitable for stories about unsigned bands, North West music scenes, independent live performance, cultural tourism, festival listings, entertainment previews and reviews, and the changing relationship between retail destinations and public events in English town centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EMY4DF - High roadside Reform UK arrow sign above a Rob Kenyon campaign placard in the Makerfield constituency, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the 18 June 2026 by-election campaign. The turquoise Reform UK branding, right-pointing arrow and candidate portrait stand out against a grey, stormy sky, overhead wires, parked cars and suburban housing, giving the image a strong visual metaphor for political direction, voter choice and unsettled public mood. The poster reads I'm voting Rob Kenyon and links the candidate to Reform UK's wider pitch to working-class and small business voters in a former Labour heartland. Kenyon, also reported as Robert Kenyon, was Reform UK's candidate against Labour's Andy Burnham, with coverage describing him as a self-employed plumber and army reservist. The image is useful for editorial stories about Reform UK, Nigel Farage's party, right-wing populism, Labour versus Reform contests, protest voting, by-election battlegrounds, northern England politics, working-class electoral appeal, street-level campaigning, political advertising and the use of simple candidate branding in local democracy. The high arrow sign, placed above the poster and slightly out of reach, can also support more interpretive features about political messaging, direction of travel, voter frustration and attempts by Reform UK to mobilise people who feel ignored by Westminster. The stormy weather and cloudy sky add a visual sense of turbulence to a contest that drew national attention because Burnham's attempt to return to Parliament was seen as politically significant beyond Makerfield. Media coverage also brought scrutiny to Kenyon's background, past comments and policy readiness, while Reform presented him as a local working tradesman. As a stock image it has strong use for articles on British elections, populist campaigns, voter realignment, northern political identity, disillusionment with mainstream parties and the visual language of UK by-election campaigning in 2026.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKGC - Documentary editorial photograph shows a blue Reform UK roundel sign mounted on a wooden post in a large garden off Bolton Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the 2026 Makerfield by-election campaign. The sign uses Reform UK's simple white arrow logo and black lettering against a bright blue background, standing above a green hedge with trees, sky and a glimpse of suburban housing behind it. The image was taken in daylight under a bright, lightly clouded sky, giving the scene a calm residential feel while still carrying a sharp political message. Reform UK grew out of the Brexit Party associated with Nigel Farage, and the party's modern campaign themes have focused heavily on anti-establishment politics, immigration, borders, public services and voter anger with the main parties. In Makerfield, the by-election was due on 18 June 2026 after stock-photo/gotonysmith-Labour.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>Labour MP Josh Simons stood down, opening the way for Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, to contest the seat for Labour. Reform UK selected Robert Kenyon, reported as a local plumber and army reservist, creating a high-profile Labour versus Reform contest in a long-standing Labour heartland. This close-up image is useful for illustrating Reform UK campaigning, right-wing populism, red wall politics, northern voter disillusionment, Labour heartlands, by-elections, political realignment, tactical voting, doorstep politics and the visibility of party support in private gardens. For stock buyers, the value lies in the uncluttered Reform UK branding, the ordinary garden setting and the precise connection to a nationally watched parliamentary contest. It works as a simple but powerful visual shorthand for the attempt by Nigel Farage's party to turn local dissatisfaction in post-industrial Greater Manchester into votes, and for the pressure facing Labour in places where political loyalty can no longer be taken for granted.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKKP - Documentary editorial photograph shows a small Reform UK ˜VOTE REFORM UK 18TH JUNE' leaflet displayed discreetly in the front window of a suburban red-brick house in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester. The white-framed window, domestic ornaments, reflections, brickwork and overhanging leaves give the image an intimate residential setting, quite different from the larger roadside banners and garden placards seen elsewhere in the Makerfield by-election campaign. The image was taken in daylight under a bright but cloudy sky, and the small blue leaflet is a subtle but clear sign of Reform UK support inside an ordinary home. The Makerfield by-election was confirmed for 18 June 2026 after Labour MP Josh Simons stood down, with Politico and ITV reporting that the move allowed Andy Burnham to seek a return to stock-photo/gotonysmith-Westminster.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>Westminster. Burnham is the Mayor of Greater Manchester, first elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2021 and 2024, and is often nicknamed the ˜King of the North' because of his strong regional profile. Reform UK's candidate Robert Kenyon was reported by the Guardian as a local plumber and army reservist, while Nigel Farage said Reform would put major effort into the contest. This image can illustrate Reform UK campaigning, window posters, private voter support, Labour versus Reform, red wall politics, political realignment, populist messaging, local democracy, parliamentary by-elections, tactical voting and the contest for working-class support in a traditional Labour area. It also speaks to the quieter side of election campaigning, where political allegiance is shown not at a rally or hustings but through a modest sign placed behind glass. For stock buyers, the value lies in the small scale of the leaflet, the domestic setting and the link to a nationally watched contest in which Burnham's Westminster ambitions, Kenyon's anti-establishment appeal and Farage's Reform UK strategy all met on Ashton-in-Makerfield streets.

TicketSource lists BPW: Return to Wrex-Slam! at Hightown Community Resource Centre, Wrexham, LL13 7YF, while Basix Pro Wrestling's own social promotion gives the same event name, date, venue and show timing. The photograph is useful for editorial coverage of Welsh independent wrestling, grassroots sports entertainment, family events, local leisure, community centre performances, Wrexham city centre advertising, fan culture and the continuing appeal of live wrestling outside the major televised promotions. Reflections in the window glass, creases in the poster and the shop-window setting give the image a real documentary street feel rather than a clean publicity graphic. It can illustrate stories about local event promotion, QR code ticketing, small entertainment businesses, community venues, affordable weekend activities, children's entertainment, Welsh pop culture and independent wrestling in towns and cities across the UK. The poster's strong typography, dramatic wrestler portraits, family friendly wording and Wrex-Slam title make it visually clear and commercially useful for stock searches connected with pro wrestling, live shows, sports posters, Wrexham events and North Wales community entertainment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EGWM98 - Busy indoor bar area at Grappenhall Beer Festival, held at The Bellhouse, home of Grappenhall Youth and Community Association in Grappenhall, Warrington, Cheshire. The image shows a crowded community beer festival interior with drinkers gathered around a temporary bar, casks and handpulls lined up on the right, beer labels visible above the pumps, people holding pint glasses, a beer programme on a table and the warm social atmosphere of a village real ale event. The festival is useful for editorial coverage of British beer culture, real ale, cask ale, local breweries, community fundraising, village events, hospitality, weekend leisure, social drinking, volunteers, beer tasting and the continuing appeal of traditional beer festivals in North West England. The Bellhouse describes itself as a charity-run community hub in the heart of Grappenhall, offering events, room hire, clubs and social spaces, and its events page lists Grappenhall Beer Festival as an annual highlight featuring local and guest ales, food and live entertainment. Ticketing information for 2026 described Grappenhall Beer Festival as Real Ale, Ciders and Live Music , presented by Grappenhall Youth & Community Association, while local coverage said the 2026 event would take place on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 May at Grappenhall Community Centre. The photograph captures the practical working side of the festival, with a busy queue at the bar, beer pumps, casks, volunteers and customers choosing drinks rather than a staged publicity view. Visible details such as the wooden floor, festival signage, beer tokens or programme, pint glasses, casual clothing and crowded bar line make it a strong documentary image for stories about community venues, local fundraising, beer festivals, the real ale movement, pub culture outside pubs, village social life and the wider role of volunteer-run events in keeping community facilities active. The indoor setting suggests a mild spring evening or weekend session

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4M23 - Colourful wall display of brewery beermats inside Cask at New Islington Marina on the Ancoats and New Islington border in Manchester. The tightly arranged collection includes circular, square and irregularly shaped mats advertising real ale, craft beer, stout, bitter, pale ale and India pale ale from independent breweries. Visible designs use bold typography, illustrated animals, abstract artwork, traditional crests and contemporary branding, creating a visual record of northern beer culture.
Cask is an independent canalside bar at Cotton Field Wharf, known for a broad selection of cask-conditioned ale, keg beer, cider and bottled or canned craft products. CAMRA lists the venue as serving real ale and real cider, while local guides describe a rotating range supplied through handpumps, guest taps and refrigerated cabinets. Its position beside New Islington Marina places it within an area of east Manchester transformed from former industrial land into apartments, waterside paths, restaurants and leisure businesses.
Beermats began as absorbent coasters protecting tables from condensation and spills, but they also became inexpensive advertising tools and collectable examples of commercial design. This display combines traditional pub ephemera with the colourful visual language used by newer breweries to distinguish specialist beer styles and limited releases. Names and designs associated with DEYA, Track, Marble, Manchester Union and Brew York can be seen among many other changing labels.
The photograph suits editorial themes involving CAMRA, cask ale, independent pubs, brewery marketing, graphic design, beer tourism, urban regeneration and Manchester nightlife. It shows how specialist bars support regional producers and offer drinkers a choice beyond mass-market lager. The dense arrangement of promotional mats conveys variety, experimentation and the social history of drinking while documenting a distinctive feature inside a popular Ancoats beer venue

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8E1HK - Front elevation of BBC Radio Merseyside studios on Hanover Street, Liverpool city centre, with ˜Made of Liverpool' window branding and presenter posters across the glazed facade. Photographed in daylight in an urban streetscape, this image captures the local broadcasting base of the BBC's long established Merseyside radio service in public setting. The building is associated with BBC local radio, regional media, journalism, interviews, live music sessions, community storytelling and public service broadcasting for Liverpool and the wider Merseyside area. The bold ˜Made of Liverpool' slogan gives the picture strong civic identity, reflecting local pride, Scouse culture, creativity, music heritage and the city's media presence. The prominent glass frontage, steel framing, corner architecture and street level entrance make this useful for editorial, documentary and commercial themes around broadcasting, communications, local news, radio production, media buildings, cultural identity and central Liverpool. BBC Radio Merseyside broadcasts from studios on Hanover Street, making the site recognisable to listeners and those interested in regional broadcasting. People standing outside add scale and a natural everyday city feel, reinforcing themes of accessibility, public engagement and the visible presence of media organisations within the heart of the city. Useful search themes include BBC building, Liverpool media hub, local radio station, public broadcaster, modern office facade, city centre architecture, journalism in the North West, civic messaging, regional press, presenter advertising, glass office exterior, Liverpool streetscene and contemporary Britain. The weather appears bright but overcast, typical of a mild day in north west England, with soft light on the exterior and clear signage visible from the street. This is a strong editorial image for stories about local identity, the BBC in the regions, Liverpool culture, media employment and place branding.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8PW0E - A roadside Kids Planet Day Nurseries recruitment banner in Appleton Thorn, Warrington, Cheshire, promoting early years childcare careers with the slogan Careers that are out of this world . The blue outdoor sign, fixed to railings beside a brick pavement and greenery, advertises nursery jobs at a private day nursery and includes the Kids Planet branding, website and Recruiting now message. The image is commercially useful for editorial coverage of childcare, nursery staffing, early years education, recruitment shortages, working parents and the cost of childcare in England. Kids Planet Appleton Thorn is listed by Ofsted at Thorn House, Green Lane, Appleton, Warrington, WA4 5NS, and the operator describes the nursery as set in the heart of Appleton Thorn with traditional building features and outdoor space. The photograph links a local Cheshire nursery setting with wider national debates about funded childcare places, Tax-Free Childcare, nursery capacity, childcare affordability and the pressure on providers to recruit and retain qualified early years staff. In England, eligible working parents may be able to receive funded childcare support, including 30 hours a week for children aged 9 months to 4 years, while Tax-Free Childcare can help eligible families pay approved providers. The word free is often used politically and in media coverage, but funded childcare is more precise because eligibility rules, provider charges, consumables, hours and local availability can all affect what parents actually pay. The overcast daylight, damp-looking paving and green roadside setting give the image an everyday suburban feel, making it suitable for news, policy, education, family finance and labour market stories. It can illustrate nursery recruitment campaigns, childcare benefits, government support, parental employment, local jobs, early years workforce pressures, private nursery provision and the practical reality behind childcare promises.

The black taxi-style vehicle carries large white Othello Taxis branding, the phone number 01789 336226 and a Download Our App message, linking traditional local taxi services with app-based booking. The name Othello is a clear literary reference to William Shakespeare's tragedy, making the image useful for editorial features on Stratford-upon-Avon tourism, Shakespeare heritage, local transport, theatre travel, visitor services, branding, small businesses and the way the town's cultural identity is reflected in everyday commercial life. Othello Taxis describes itself as a Stratford-upon-Avon taxi service offering local journeys, airport transfers and long-distance travel for personal and business customers, and its contact page gives a Bishopton operating address in Stratford-upon-Avon. The photograph works well for stories about visitors moving between Shakespeare's Birthplace, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Holy Trinity Church, hotels, restaurants, railway station and town centre attractions. It also suits articles on taxi apps, local cab operators, independent transport firms, tourism infrastructure, accessible town-centre mobility and the visitor economy in Warwickshire. Stratford-upon-Avon is deeply associated with Shakespeare, so a taxi firm named after one of his major plays becomes more than a simple vehicle shot: it shows how literary tourism shapes names, signage, marketing and local business identity. The town-centre setting, parked vehicles, shopfronts and street activity give the image a practical documentary feel rather than a staged advertising view. It is a useful stock image for travel guides, theatre-going features, local news, transport reporting, business directories, tourism blogs and articles about how Shakespeare remains woven into the commercial and civic fabric.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ECEEJA - Photograph of a Scottish Housing Regulator exhibition banner showing the organisation's red geometric logo and the message Regulating to protect the interests of tenants, homeless people and others who use social landlords' services. The display appears to be inside an indoor conference or sector event, with exhibition stand framing visible around the pull-up banner. The image is useful for editorial coverage of social housing regulation in Scotland, housing association oversight, local authority housing services, tenant protection, homelessness services, service-user rights, governance, assurance, public accountability and the regulatory environment affecting registered social landlords.
The Scottish Housing Regulator is the independent regulator of social landlords in Scotland, including registered social landlords and councils that provide housing and homelessness services. Its role is to safeguard and promote the interests of current and future tenants, people who are homeless, factored owners, Gypsy/Travellers and others using social landlords' services. This makes the image relevant to articles about housing regulation, landlord performance, tenant satisfaction, homelessness duties, regulatory frameworks, Scottish public bodies, housing policy, intervention powers, annual returns, social landlord reporting and scrutiny of housing providers.
The white banner, large black lettering and red angular branding give the photograph visual value for stories needing a clear symbol of regulation rather than a picture of homes or tenants. It may suit features about the Scottish social housing sector, regulatory standards, consumer protection, tenant voice, repairs performance, complaints, homelessness support, housing association governance, council housing services and the role of public regulators in protecting vulnerable service users. The indoor event setting also adds context for housing conferences, professional networks and stakeholder engagement.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWW5PC - Taken on 17 Sep 2023, this photograph shows Local Plan spelled out in Scrabble letters and words on a map of England - local development and building control. The location is England & Wales, Great Britain, UK. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains a carefully staged close-up of letter tiles arranged as a readable concept phrase, photographed against a map, keyboard, dictionary page, coins or other context props rather than a plain studio background. The planning concept connects with local plans, housing delivery, objections, development management, land value, regeneration, council decision-making and the political argument over how Britain builds. The image can be used as a clear editorial, blog or report illustration where a concept needs to be shown visually without using a person, organisation logo or staged office scene. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Searchable related phrases include planning, local, development, Scrabble, map, maps, Local plan, Local Planning, atlas, world, letter, letters, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. Because the subject is clearly labelled or visually distinctive, it can also work well in search-led usage where the buyer needs immediate recognition at small web-preview size.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWW5PR - Taken on 17 Sep 2023, this photograph shows Planning Reform spelled out in Scrabble letters and words on a map of England - local development and building control. Searchable related phrases include planning, local, development, Scrabble, map, maps, Planning Reform, reforming, atlas, world, letter, letters, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. It has value for both local and national stories, especially where writers need to connect a named place or object with wider economic, social, environmental or cultural change.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJ3YRG - Buxton Town Hall was opened in 1889 on the Market Place in Buxton, Derbyshire, England. It lies in the town's central Conservation Area overlooking The Slopes. It is a Grade-II-listed building.
The building was designed in the style of a French château (with a mansard roof crested with iron railings, Venetian windows and a clocktower with a cupola) by Manchester architect William Pollard (who also designed Buxton College's Gothic-style 'new building' in 1880). After the Market Hall (designed by Henry Currey) was destroyed by a fire in September 1885, the site was selected for the new town hall. The fire brigade with the town's new fire engine was unable to control the fire started by a paraffin lamp in one of the shops in the Market Hall. A competition was held in 1886 for the design of the new town hall. William Pollard's design won the £50 prize and James Salt's local firm was selected to build it at a tender of £8,900 (Salt also built the Entertainment Stage theatre, which is now the Pavilion Arts Centre). The chairman of the governing Local Board, Edward Milligan, laid the foundation stone in June 1887 (the year of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria). The Marquess of Hartington conducted the official opening of the town hall on 26 June 1889.
The clock on the clock tower was a gift from the Duke of Devonshire's tenants in 1889, in honour of Lord Frederick Cavendish, who was stabbed to death aged 45 in the Phoenix Park Murders in Dublin in May 1882 (shortly after arriving to take up his new post as Chief Secretary for Ireland). There is a bust of Lord Cavendish (son of the 7th Duke of Devonshire) on display inside the town hall
Current use - High Peak Borough Council, formed in 1974, presently has administrative centres at Buxton Town Hall and Glossop Town Hall. Full Council meetings are usually held in Buxton or at Chapel-en-le-Frith Town Hall

The location is Buttermarket St, Warrington, Cheshire, England, WA1 2NN. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains public house signs, frontage, street activity or drinking culture details useful for hospitality and heritage features. The Warrington pub frontage links real ale, evening hospitality, town-centre leisure and the reuse of older commercial buildings in a changing high street. It could support features on pubs, beer, leisure, nightlife, tourism, heritage streets, local economies, independent hospitality and the pressures facing town-centre venues. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGJ40 - This image shows the exterior of Radio Northwich, a community radio station based in Northwich, Cheshire. The station operates as a local, non-commercial broadcaster, providing a mix of music, local news, interviews, and community-focused programming aimed at serving residents of Northwich and the surrounding area.
Radio Northwich broadcasts on FM locally and also streams online, reflecting the hybrid nature of modern community radio in the UK. Programming typically includes locally produced shows, specialist music output, and coverage of local events, charities, and voluntary groups, with a strong emphasis on community participation and volunteering.
The station is independently run and community-owned, operating on a not-for-profit basis rather than as part of a national commercial radio network. Community radio stations such as Radio Northwich play an important role in local media ecosystems, particularly as traditional local newspapers and commercial radio services have declined.
The photograph appears to have been taken in late-day light, with warm reflections visible in the glass frontage of the building. The modern exterior places the station firmly within Northwich town centre, highlighting the visibility and accessibility of community media within everyday urban life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP368 - This image shows a richly coloured stained glass heraldic panel inside Coleraine Town Hall, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The central shield bears crossed symbols and decorative floral motifs, surmounted by the Red Hand of Ulster, one of the most recognisable and historically significant emblems of the province of Ulster.
The banner text reading Newton Governor references civic or administrative authority connected with Coleraine's historical governance, reflecting the town's importance as a regional centre during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Surrounding the shield are elaborate decorative elements typical of Victorian and Edwardian stained glass, including scrollwork, symbolic objects, and vibrant blue, gold, and green glass.
Stained glass such as this was commonly installed in municipal buildings to express civic pride, authority, and continuity, combining local identity with broader Ulster and British heraldic traditions. The image is suitable for editorial use relating to Northern Irish history, heraldry, civic architecture, stained glass art, and local government heritage.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R3WMPF - This image shows a street name sign for Vinegar Alley in Walthamstow, East London, clearly displaying the E17 postcode. The sign is mounted on a metal pole and set against a backdrop of leafy green trees, giving a strong sense of place within a residential urban neighbourhood.
Street signs such as this are widely used in editorial, travel and lifestyle imagery to represent location, navigation and local identity. The distinctive street name adds character and curiosity, making the image suitable for illustrating themes of London neighbourhoods, wayfinding, urban exploration and everyday street detail.
Photographed in daylight during the warmer months, the surrounding foliage suggests a calm, well-established residential area. The simple composition focuses attention on the typography and wording of the sign, allowing it to be used as a contextual image for stories about place, community, property, local history or urban living in East London.
Vinegar Alley forms part of the wider streetscape of Walthamstow, an area that has become increasingly popular for its village atmosphere, green spaces and strong sense of local character within the capital.

The church is set within a landscaped churchyard containing gravestones, flowers and mature trees, creating a calm green space within the surrounding urban area.
St Mary's has medieval origins and has been altered and extended over centuries, resulting in a distinctive exterior that reflects different periods of church architecture. The tower with its clock face forms a prominent local landmark, while the long nave and arched windows emphasise the building's role as a place of worship and community gathering.
The photograph was taken in daylight during the warmer months, with trees in leaf and wildflowers visible in the churchyard, adding seasonal colour and softness to the scene. The combination of historic stonework and greenery makes the location attractive to visitors, walkers and those interested in London's religious and architectural heritage.
St Mary's Church remains an important focal point in Walthamstow Village, illustrating the area's transformation from a rural settlement to part of the modern capital, while preserving a strong sense of continuity, local identity and spiritual history.

The image captures a traditional volunteer-supported community bar at the heart of village life, where members and guests can enjoy real ale, cider, craft beer and social conversation in a local village hall rather than a commercial pub chain. Appleton Thorn Village Hall describes its bar as offering a warm welcome to members, while CAMRA notes that the hall has been CAMRA National Club of the Year more than once, with real ales mainly from independent breweries, many from Cheshire and North Wales, and third-pint paddles available. The photograph is commercially useful for stories about CAMRA, real ale, cask beer, volunteer-run bars, community pubs, village halls, social clubs, beer tasting, local breweries, hospitality, rural community life and the survival of traditional beer culture. The visible chalkboard prices, polished brass handpulls, beer mats, pump clips, tasting glasses and wooden paddle give the scene strong documentary detail and make it useful for editorial coverage of beer choice, cellar quality, community volunteering, club membership, social drinking and the role of village halls as informal public spaces. It can also illustrate wider debate about pub closures, rising hospitality costs, changing drinking habits, beer duty, local fundraising, independent brewing and the value of community-owned or community-run social venues. The warm indoor lighting, stocked back bar and line-up of different beer styles create an inviting image of real ale culture, showing not just a drink but a social tradition built around local knowledge, volunteers, conversation and shared community effort.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KDKG4J - Rainy, overcast view of the Warrington Fir Grove Hotel on Knutsford Old Road, Grappenhall, Warrington, Cheshire, England, with its large turquoise roadside sign advertising wedding and conference suites, restaurant and bar, and the hotel building and parked cars beyond. The hotel became the focus of a local political dispute in November 2022 after the Home Office planned to use it to accommodate families seeking asylum. Warrington South Conservative MP Andy Carter said he would raise the decision in Parliament and criticised the Home Office over consultation with residents and local services. Warrington Borough Council also opposed the decision and explored possible legal and planning options, although King's Counsel advised that an immediate challenge was unlikely to succeed. Contemporary reporting said the hotel had 54 rooms and a maximum planned occupancy of 79 guests. The episode became part of the wider national argument over asylum accommodation, hotel costs, irregular migration and small-boat crossings of the English Channel. By 2026 the Labour government had reduced the asylum-hotel population and closed a proportion of hotels, while committing to end hotel use during the Parliament. However, claims that Labour had already drastically reduced small-boat arrivals need qualification: official year-ending March 2026 figures recorded 39,271 small-boat arrivals, 3% higher than the previous year, although arrivals began falling later and April to June 2026 were substantially lower year on year. Reform UK's 2026 Operation Fortress policy proposes Royal Navy-led interception of small boats and returning those aboard to France or Belgium, alongside a much tougher approach to inadmissibility and removal. The contrasting approaches make sites such as Fir Grove a useful documentary image for changing British debates over asylum, borders, public spending, local consultation and immigration policy.

An angry Warrington South MP Andy Carter says he is going to raise the Home Office decision to allow asylum seekers at the Fir Grove Hotel at Grappenhall in parliament in the coming week.
Mr Carter yesterday held a number of meetings to understand the legal options available to Warrington Borough Council, which also opposes the decision.
He said: I held a number of meetings yesterday to understand the legal options available to the Council in terms of challenging decisions taken by the owners of the hotel and to gain more information from the Home Office and their plans for this site.
In discussions with Home Office officials, I have been advised that the cohort planned for accommodation this site will be families with children. Prior to arriving in Warrington the refugees will have been processed at centres elsewhere. The hotel has 54 rooms and a maximum occupancy of 79 guests in total.
The advice received from Kings Counsel was that an immediate legal challenge to this decision to use this site for Asylum Seekers would be unlikely to succeed, not least due the incredibly short timescales before the asylum seekers arrive in Warrington and the location of the owners of the site. Other local authorities are however pursuing legal routes related to planning legislation and a change of use requirements, which I am monitoring.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBMT - North Yorkshire Police is the territorial police force covering the non-metropolitan county of North Yorkshire and the unitary authority of York in northern England. As of September 2018 the force had a strength of 1,357 police officers, 127 special constables, 192 PCSOs and 1,072 police staff. Of the 43 territorial police forces in England and Wales, the force has the 5th largest geographic area of responsibility whilst being the 15th smallest force in terms of police officer numbers
The force was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, and was largely a successor to the York and North East Yorkshire Police, also taking part of the old West Riding Constabulary's area. The York and North East Yorkshire Police had covered the North Riding of Yorkshire, the East Riding of Yorkshire and the county borough of York
it was itself formed in 1968 from a merger of the two riding forces with the York City Police
In July 2017, the force's headquarters was moved from Newby Wiske to Alverton Court in Northallerton. The new headquarters is the former offices of the Rural Payments Agency
Since November 2012, the force has been overseen by the elected North Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner. Since 2018, this role has also included oversight of the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. In October 2021, the incumbent commissioner Philip Allott resigned following comments surrounding the murder of Sarah Everard

The Market began in 1500. The market building used today dates from 1867. There is a Market on three days a week, and there are stalls inside and out. Nantwich is a busy shopping centre with many fine food, drink and clothing retailers.
Nantwich is an ancient settlement and there were Romans here. The ˜wich' part of the name comes from salt, which the town remains famous for. The local salt springs were good for making salt, and in the 1900s were popular for health tourists. The town still has a popular heated outdoor brine swimming pool.

As well, the Grade I listed Church of St James includes a plaque to William Grevel, described as the flower of the wool merchants of all England. His home, the Grade I listed Grevel's House, was built c. 1380. It is not open to visitors. Chipping Campden is a market town in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. It is notable for its terraced High Street, dating from the 14th century to the 17th century. (Chipping is from Old English cēping, 'market', 'market-place'
the same element is found in other towns such as Chipping Norton, Chipping Sodbury and Chipping (now High) Wycombe.)
A wool trading centre in the Middle Ages, Chipping Campden enjoyed the patronage of wealthy wool merchants, most notably William Greville (d.1401). The High Street is lined with buildings built from locally quarried oolitic limestone known as Cotswold stone, and boasts a wealth of vernacular architecture. Much of the town centre is a conservation area which has helped to preserve the original buildings. The town is an end point of the Cotswold Way, a 102-mile long-distance footpath.
Chipping Campden has hosted its own Olympic Games since 1612.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DKW7N6 - Latchford is a suburb and electoral ward of Warrington, Cheshire, England. It is around one mile south-east of Warrington town centre and has a total resident population of 7,856.
Latchford is a predominantly residential area, Latchford lies between the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal, and broadly consists of 19th-century terraced housing and some open space. The canal is crossed here by a swing bridge, a high-level road bridge and the now disused Latchford railway viaduct.
Its name came from Anglo-Saxon Læccford meaning boggy-stream ford
Latchford was originally a township in the ancient parish of Grappenhall, in Cheshire. It was also part of Bucklow Hundred, and was close to the border with Lancashire.
Between 1894 and 1974, part of Latchford was placed within the County Borough of Warrington, and the registration county of Lancashire, whilst the rest of Latchford became a civil parish named Latchford Without and was transferred to Lancashire.
With the local government reforms of 1974, as part of the newly formed Cheshire borough of Warrington, Latchford was transferred back to Cheshire

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2ABJGC0 - The Barras is a major street and indoor weekend market in the East End of Glasgow, Scotland. The term barra is Glaswegian dialect for barrow, relating to the market's early years, where traders sold their wares from handcarts. Barrowland is sometimes used to describe the district itself where the market is located, which is actually officially known as Calton.
Because of its location on Gallowgate “ the main thoroughfare from the city centre to Parkhead and Celtic Park, Barrowlands is also notable for its large concentration of public houses and shops devoted to fans of Celtic Football Club. Baird's Bar was one of the best known Celtic-oriented pubs next door to the Barrowland Ballroom building, the bar has since closed down due to violent incidents that have occurred in the premises. The bar is to be reopened as a furniture store.
Glasgow Antiques and Randalls Antique and vintage Center, the Cartwheel and the Square Yard can all be found next to the Squirrel Bar.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BCTGRG - Stockport is a large, major town in Greater Manchester, England, 7 miles (11 km) south-east of Manchester city centre, where the River Goyt and Tame merge to create the River Mersey, and the largest in the metropolitan borough of the same name.
Historically, most of the town was in Cheshire, but the area to the north of the Mersey was in Lancashire. Stockport in the 16th century was a small town entirely on the south bank of the Mersey, and known for the cultivation of hemp and manufacture of rope. In the 18th century the town had one of the first mechanised silk factories in the British Isles. However, Stockport's predominant industries of the 19th century were the cotton and allied industries. Stockport was also at the centre of the country's hatting industry, which by 1884 was exporting more than six million hats a year
the last hat works in Stockport closed in 1997.
Dominating the western approaches to the town is the Stockport Viaduct. Built in 1840, the viaduct's 27 brick arches carry the mainline railways from Manchester to Birmingham and London over the River Mersey. This structure featured as the background in many paintings by L. S. Lowry.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XNE9 - A credit union is a member-owned nonprofit cooperative financial institution.
Credit unions may offer financial services as commercial banks such as share accounts (savings accounts), share draft accounts (cheque accounts), credit cards, credit, share term certificates (certificates of deposit), and online banking. Normally, only a member of a credit union may deposit or borrow money. In several African countries, credit unions are commonly referred to as SACCOs (Savings and Credit Co-Operatives).
Worldwide, credit union systems vary significantly in their total assets and average institution asset size, ranging from volunteer operations with a handful of members to institutions with hundreds of thousands of members and assets worth billions of US dollars. In 2018, the number of members in credit unions worldwide was 375 million, with over 100 million members having been added since 2016.
Leading up to the financial crisis of 2007“2008, commercial banks engaged in approximately five times more subprime lending relative to credit unions and were two and a half times more likely to fail during the crisis. American credit unions more than doubled lending to small businesses between 2008 and 2016, from $30 billion to $60 billion, while lending to small businesses overall during the same period declined by around $100 billion. In the US, public trust in credit unions stands at 60%, compared to 30% for big banks. Furthermore, small businesses are 80% more likely to be satisfied by a credit union than with a big bank.
Natural-person credit unions (also called retail credit unions or consumer credit unions) serve individuals, as distinguished from corporate credit unions, which serve other credit unions

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8KEYN - Bawtry is a small market town and civil parish which lies where the western branch of the Roman Ermine Street crosses the River Idle in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England, close to the county's border with Nottinghamshire, and meets the old course of the Great North Road. Nearby towns include Gainsborough to the east, Retford to the south south-east, Worksop to the south-west and Doncaster to the north-west. Historically within the West Riding of Yorkshire, it had a population of 3,204 in the UK census of 2001, increasing to 3,573 at the 2011 Census
Bawtry is located in the metropolitan borough of Doncaster on the border with Nottinghamshire, and is situated between Bircotes and Misson at the conjunction of the A614, A631 and A638 roads. The present A638 was for centuries the Great North Road, and in the 20th century the town was a notorious bottleneck, until it was bypassed in 1965. The county boundary with Nottinghamshire runs just to the south of the town and for this reason the southernmost house on the Great North Road is named 'Number One Yorkshire'.
The town's former prosperity was based on its communications, the River Idle in the days when it was a port, the Great North Road in the coaching era, and the Great Northern Railway.
Bawtry's geographical location is 53° 25' 40 North, 1° 1' West, at an elevation of around 65 feet (20 m) above sea level.
The town is located just south of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, formerly RAF Finningley. Bawtry Hall was home to RAF No.1 Group Bomber Command during and after the Second World War, and became the Headquarters of RAF Strike Command (see RAF Bawtry). From 1989 to 2013 Bawtry Hall operated as a Christian conference centre and a base for several Christian organisations.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EYAX5J - The Warrington Club is one of this historic town's few remaining traditional establishments
founded in 1876 by leading Victorian industrialists, statesmen and professionals for the sole purpose of providing a venue where members could meet on a regular basis in comfortable surroundings to enjoy each others company and meaningful conversation.
The Club offered an excellent opportunity for business ideas, suggestions and deals to be discussed considering that in those early days there was no other means of communication except for a rather hit and miss postal service. In the modern idiom the Club provided what is now known as ˜net working'.
The building occupied by the Warrington Club in Bold Street was purpose built using monies raised by the original 76 founder members. Those familiar with Warrington will no doubt recognise the names of some of the founder members.
Arthur Bennett (1862- 1931) a chartered accountant, was a remarkable character. He served as a Councellor and Alderman for many years and had hopes of making Warrington a ˜Garden City'. Sadly, the Great War shattered the dream but the quality of the one completed terrace of houses in Sankey gives some evidence of his vision. The foundation stone was laid by the great pioneer of garden cities, Ebenezer Howard. Bennett was a prolific writer. His ˜Dream of a Warringtonian', if romanticised, is still a very readable history of our 1,000 year old town, and his collection of poems ˜Songs of a Chartered Accountant' posesses both warmth and charm. John, Earnest Crosfield of Joseph Crosfield & Sons Ltd. Finally, Sir Gilbert Greenall MP, Lieut Col. Greenall and Captain Grenall of the Greenall Whitley Brewery. Paul, Harry and George Rylands founders of the world famous Rylands Brothers Ltd, Wire & Nails manufacturers “ hence the obvious connection with the local Rugby League team known as ˜The Wires'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EY5KD4 - Fred Wood (1876-1934) In honour of a forgotten hero, who on this day in 1907 undoubtedly prevented the deaths of hundreds of local workers when the couplings broke on a heavily laden goods train as it approached this station. Over 50 laden wagons sped back down the line heading towards Dukinfield Station and an occupied 'workers' train. Turning the points, he forced the runaway train onto a track towards Dukinfield goods yard, narrowly averting a major disaster.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXKNX - LGBT Warrington is organised by LGBT members who are all volunteers. The group has built great relationships with partners, which include the Council, police, health and local businesses.
They are here to help and welcome anyone who would like to join us to stamp out the stigma people may have on the LGBT community.
The group offers support to those who need it on a 1-2-1 basis and is treated with great confidentiality, and point people in the right direction of the services they require.
They meet throughout the year mainly to have a brew and chat about life in general, to meet and make new friends, and for those who require extra support, to help by signposting to relevant services in Warrington. We also at times hold activities such as bowling, theatre trips, quizzes and games.
They also have nights out in the town centre at Cotton Mill or Show Bar and take part with events they are holding, or even have the odd night out to Manchester to Canal Street or to the theatre.
During the year they are also visited by guest speakers.
They welcome visitors and potential new members whatever their sexuality, though is open to 18+ only.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DBHR53 - North Staffordshire oatcake shop where the mixture is cooked on a traditional baxton iron griddle, then filled with bacon, cheese, mushroom, tomatoes etc and a splash of sauce.
A North Staffordshire oatcake is a type of pancake made from oatmeal, flour and yeast. It is cooked on a griddle or 'baxton'. The oatcake is a local speciality in the North Staffordshire area of England. They are normally referred to as Staffordshire oatcakes or possibly Potteries oatcakes by non-locals, because they were made in this area. In and around Staffordshire and Cheshire they are often simply known as oatcakes.
Derbyshire oatcakes are similar to Staffordshire oatcakes, but while following a similar (or even the same) recipe are generally larger in diameter, and thicker. For example the same recipe will make four Derbyshire or twelve Staffordshire style oatcakes.
It was once common throughout the Potteries for oatcakes to be sold directly from the window of a house to customers on the street. The last producer in this style closed on the 25th of March 2012
however, there are many small commercial premises who sell oatcakes. Larger commercial enterprises exist that sell oatcakes to supermarkets and other large distribution chains.
Oatcakes can be a form of fast food. Catering outlets in the area usually offer oatcakes with fillings such as cheese, tomato, onion, bacon, sausage, and egg.
They can also be eaten with sweet fillings such as golden syrup, jam or banana, but this is less common and frowned upon by traditionalists. They are traditionally re-heated by steaming between two plates over a saucepan of water or nowadays by microwave, though some may prefer frying in butter or grilling.

The present gateway dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure which carries the walkway forming part of Chester city walls. In 1899 a clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. It is carried on openwork iron pylons, has a clock face on all four sides, and a copper ogee cupola. The clock was designed by the Chester architect John Douglas. The whole structure, gateway and clock, was listed by English Heritage on 28 July 1955 as a Grade I listed building

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D96MWT - Description of the famous Thorn tree at Appleton Thorn village, South Warrington, England for the annual June Bawming the Thorn
Appleton Thorn is a village in the borough of Warrington in Cheshire, England.
Each June, the village hosts the ceremony of Bawming the Thorn. The current form of the ceremony dates from the Nineteenth century, when it was part of the village's walking day. It involved children from Appleton Thorn Primary School walking through the village and holding sports and games at the school. This now takes place at the Village Hall. The ceremony stopped in the 1930s, but was later revived by the then headmaster, Mr. Bob Jones in the early 1970s. Bawming the Thorn occurs on the Saturday nearest to Midsummer's Day. Local schoolchildren dance around the tree.
Bawming means decorating - during the ceremony the thorn tree is decorated with ribbons and garlands. According to legend, the hawthorn at Appleton Thorn grew from a cutting of the Holy Thorn at Glastonbury, which was itself said to have sprung from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea, the man who arranged for Jesus's burial after the Crucifixion.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DBHRXT - The mosaic is built on a low brick plinth. The structure has a breeze block support and makes use of recycled Victorian blue bricks as well as slate for the seats on either side.
The whole structure is faced in ceramic mosaics, pieces from local ceramic companies' products, glass beads, and tiles.
A number of themes have been incorporated into the design, including animals and plants indigenous to the area, a picture of the church, together with mouldings of heads and other features from gravestones and monuments in the churchyard, images of the traditional coal and bottle kilns that made the city famous, as well as high-tech industries, a tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, whose funeral service was held at the Church, and a depiction of the Trent and Mersey Canal merging into the Sea of Galilee and then into the River Trent as it wraps round the base of the mosaic, unifying the design for the whole structure. Within this ribbon of mosaic, ammonites and different varieties of fish are depicted.
On the front of the bench, facing away from the church, are plaques depicting St Peter's Church and School, interspersed with heads, both European and Asian. The base of the seat features an image of two men in a boat, with a mast in the shape of an upside-down cross and two crossed keys (both emblems of St Peter, to whom the nearby church is dedicated).
The wildlife depicted on the right hand end of the bench includes a bat with outstretched wings, a squirrel, a rabbit, a frog, a snail, a fox, a butterfly, a robin, a blackbird, a magpie, a hedgehog and a wren.
The back of the bench celebrates the industrial heritage of Stoke on Trent. Its designs includes plaques featuring men in flat caps carrying pots to the kiln on wooden boards, bottle kilns, pit winding gear and factory chimneys. These are interspersed with smaller pieces commemorating the pottery produced in the area. Below the seat, the central design is of two cartoon-like figures in a canal barge.

\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
I remember Gary Numan coming out of the left field in 1979 with heavy synthesizer hooks fed through guitar effects pedals. At the time the likes of the Silicon Teens and The Normal (Warm Leatherette seemed to have the post punk synth sound licked.
Hammersmith boy, Gary Webb was original front man for Tubeway Army. 'Down In The Park' was Tubeway Armys third single and appeared on the Replicas album.
Replicas was based on a book Numan hoped to complete someday as a type of concept album. It was set in a not-too-distant future metropolis where Machmen (androids with cloned human skin) and other machines keep the general public cowed on orders from the Grey Men (shadowy officials).
Numan was directly inspired by the science fiction of Philip K. Dick, particularly the book 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?'.
Numan has become acknowledged and respected by his peers, with such musicians as Dave Grohl (of Foo Fighters and Nirvana), Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails), and Marilyn Manson proclaiming his work an influence and recording cover versions of old Numan hits. If you have chance and inclination, checkout the 'Premier Hits' compilation for a good into to this forgotten pioneer.

Dunham Park covers an area of over 190 acres and is part of the Dunham Park Estate, run by the National Trust (NT). The park is mostly \u201cpasture-woodland or park-woodland\u201d and has been since the Middle Ages. Many of the oak trees, which make up the larger part of the woodland, date back to the 17th century. Dunham Park is the only place in the northwest of England with such a concentration of old trees, and one of only a few remaining in England, making it a site of national importance. The park supports a range of animals, including fallow deer. The old water mill is pictured here. This image has been take using a Hoya R72 filter for infra red.

Manchester Town Hall is a Victorian-era, Neo-gothic municipal building in Manchester, England. The building functions as the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments.
Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse the town hall was completed in 1877. The building occupies a triangular site facing Albert Square and contains offices and grand ceremonial rooms such as the Great Hall which is decorated with the imposing Manchester Murals by Ford Madox Brown illustrating the history of the city. The entrance and Sculpture Hall contain busts and statues of influential figures including Dalton, Joule and Barbirolli. The exterior is dominated by the clock tower which rises to 87 metres (285 feet) and houses Great Abel, the clock bell.
In 1938, a detached Town Hall Extension was completed and is connected by two covered bridges over Lloyd Street. The town hall, which was granted Grade I listed building status on 25 February 1952[6] is regarded as one of the finest interpretations of neogothic architecture in the United Kingdom

Maybe a mantra for our current troubled times?
Perhaps we should worry about our carbon footprint, walk a bit more rather than drive as much? Possibly eat less supermarket food, consume in season and cut down on our food air miles ? Think more about our neighbours, come to think of it, do you even know your neighbours? Some of our prejudges should maybe be put aside, the world's more interesting when it's diverse.
I must have passed this on Orford road coming into Padgate, Warrington Cheshire a few dozen times. To stop at the traffic lights makes you consider these four words a little more deeply. Next time you wait there to follow the A50 or to go to Birchwood following the A574, consider these words.
If you have had any thoughts when passing this, please leave a comment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYF8B - Eastgate and Eastgate Clock in Chester, Cheshire, England, stand on the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix. It is a prominent landmark in the city of Chester and is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
The original gate was guarded by a timber tower which was replaced by a stone tower in the 2nd century, and this in turn was replaced probably in the 14th century.

The sign uses Reform UK's simple white arrow branding, pointing forward against a blue background, with traditional terraced houses, brick walls, railings, chimney stacks, overhead wires and a cloudy North West England sky behind it. The image has strong street-level political value because it places a national right-wing populist party message into a local working-class housing setting. Reform UK grew out of the Brexit Party, the vehicle associated with Nigel Farage, and Britannica describes Farage as having launched the Brexit Party in 2019 before rebranding it as Reform UK in 2021. The Makerfield by-election was scheduled for 18 June 2026 after Labour MP Josh Simons stood down, creating a nationally watched contest between Andy Burnham for Labour and Robert Kenyon for Reform UK. Kenyon was reported as a local plumber and army reservist, while Burnham is the high-profile Mayor of Greater Manchester. Reform UK's campaign sought to mobilise voters around anti-establishment themes, immigration, borders and public dissatisfaction, while Labour presented Burnham as a recognised regional figure with a record linked to growth, devolution and the Bee Network transport programme. This image can illustrate Reform UK campaigning, Brexit legacy politics, Labour heartlands, red wall constituencies, working-class voter identity, political realignment, populism, immigration messaging, tactical voting, local democracy and public trust in northern England. For stock buyers, the strength lies in the contrast between the crisp campaign roundel and the everyday terrace backdrop, a compact visual shorthand for how the Makerfield contest turned ordinary residential streets into visible markers of national political change.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EJYKGY - Two tribes editorial photograph shows two rival political signs in a front garden setting in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, Greater Manchester, during the June 2026 Makerfield by-election campaign. In the foreground, a red Labour ˜VOTE ANDY FOR US' poster shows a cartoon likeness of Andy Burnham in his familiar black top and glasses, while a blue Reform UK roundel sign is visible just behind the hedge. The two signs create a compact visual contest between Burnham, the high-profile Mayor of Greater Manchester, and Reform UK candidate Robert Kenyon, reported as a local plumber and army reservist. The image was taken in daylight under a cloudy North West England sky, with terraced and semi-detached houses, a brick wall, hedges and a quiet suburban road giving the scene a strongly local, doorstep politics feel. Burnham is often nicknamed the ˜King of the North' in political and media commentary, reflecting his regional profile since becoming Mayor of Greater Manchester in 2017 and winning further mayoral terms in 2021 and 2024. The Makerfield by-election was due on 18 June 2026 and drew national attention because Burnham's possible return to Westminster was linked with Labour's future direction and speculation about Sir Keir Starmer's leadership. Reform UK's challenge added anstock-photo/gotonysmith-Other.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>other layer, with Kenyon's candidacy attracting scrutiny over past social media posts and debate about the party's appeal in Labour heartlands. This image is useful for stories about Labour campaigning, Reform UK pressure, red wall politics, northern identity, voter choice, by-elections, populism, political branding, tactical voting and the everyday visibility of party loyalty in residential streets. For stock buyers, its strength is the juxtaposition of two competing signs: one personalised around Burnham's recognisable cartoon image, the other using Reform UK's simple directional branding, both bidding for attention before a closely watched parliamentary contest in Makerfield.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K69A4H - Gloucester Services are a pair of Motorway Service Areas (MSA) serving the northbound and southbound carriageways of the M5 between Junction 11A and Junction 12, near Whaddon, Gloucester. It specialises in selling artisanal food, and does not offer outlets for popular chain food brands.
Construction of the northbound services began in early 2013, and they officially opened on 7 May 2014. Construction of the southbound services commenced in March 2014 and they opened on 19 May 2015
In September 2009, the independent motorway services operator Westmorland Motorway Services Ltd, jointly with a local charitable trust, Gloucestershire Gateway Trust, submitted plans for a service area at Matson for public consultation. The plans were for a business operated in a similar manner to Tebay Services on the M6 in Cumbria, with much of the food and produce on sale being sourced from local suppliers
The operator promised not to host chain coffee shops, fast-food outlets, or video and gambling machines
The service area supports the Gloucestershire Gateway Trust in assisting the business to provide good jobs for more deprived areas of Gloucester, and to support local social regeneration schemes.
The 2019 Motorway Services User Survey found that Gloucester's southbound side was in the top five motorway services in the UK for customer satisfaction
The District Council was informed at the end of February 2011 that Roadchef and Welcome Break (the operators of Strensham and Michaelwood service stations) had applied to the High Court for a judicial review of the Council's decision to grant planning permission. Joined in the action were CAMSA and the Parish Councils of Brookthorpe-with-Whaddon and Harescombe. The case was heard in the High Court in Birmingham on 17 and 18 January 2012. By 8 February 2012, the High Court had dismissed all challenges to the planning application
One of the factors that helped the development gain planning permission was the inclusion of a green roof

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PG60W3 - The Borough of Waverley is a local government district with borough status in Surrey, England. The borough's headquarters are in the town of Godalming
other notable settlements are the towns of Farnham and Haslemere and the large village of Cranleigh. At the 2021 Census, the population of the borough was 128,200.
Waverley borders the borough of Guildford to the north, the Mole Valley district to the east, the Horsham and Chichester districts of West Sussex to the south, and the East Hampshire and Hart districts and the borough of Rushmoor in Hampshire to the west and northwest. The borough is named after Waverley Abbey, near Farnham, the earliest Cistercian monastery in Britain. Blackheath Common, in the north of the borough, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Waverley is a Wealden borough, bounded to the north by the Hog's Back section of the North Downs and by the Greensand Ridge. It has the most green space in absolute terms in Surrey at 293.1 km2 (113 sq. mi.) according to the central government-compiled Generalised Land Use database of January 2005, approximately half of which is woodland.
Much of the west of the borough echoes former ownership by the abbey, such as Waverley Cricket Club and the Waverley Arms pubs in Farnham and elsewhere. Equally echoed are the tens of square miles held under Farnham holding of the Bishop of Winchester which took in the western parishes of Frensham and Churt as well as much of Farnham parish since the early 12th century when one such Bishop, Henry of Winchester and of Blois established Farnham Castle as the See's episcopal home but which is today the borough's main surviving castle and a museum to the period.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P307AH - Altrincham Market is shown busy with shoppers, flower stalls and independent traders in the regenerated market quarter of Altrincham, Trafford, Greater Manchester. The image shows the open market area beside the timber-framed covered structure, with potted plants, bouquets, gazebos, luggage and retail stalls set out across the paved public space. People browse and chat in a relaxed town-centre setting under a cloudy early-season sky, giving the photograph a strong everyday documentary feel. Altrincham has long market-town roots, with its market charter dating back to 1290, but the modern revival of the Market House and surrounding streets has made it a widely cited example of successful high-street regeneration in North West England. The scene is useful for editorial coverage of retail revival, town centre renewal, local authority regeneration, independent food halls, markets, small businesses, place-making, public realm investment, hospitality-led footfall and the reinvention of traditional shopping streets. It also works for comparisons with destination food markets such as Borough Market in Southwark, while retaining a distinct Greater Manchester character: smaller scale, suburban, mixed retail and strongly linked to local community life. The timber canopy, brick buildings, white tents and outdoor flower displays show a market environment that blends heritage, leisure, food, drink, shopping and social activity rather than relying only on conventional chain retail. Altrincham Market has been associated with the town's wider comeback, drawing visitors, raising footfall and supporting cafés, bars, restaurants and specialist traders. This photograph can illustrate debates about changing town centres, the decline of old retail models, the value of markets as anchors, council regeneration, independent enterprise, sustainable local shopping, visitor economy, Trafford prosperity and the appeal of public spaces where people can shop, eat, meet and linger.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy E6JB5A - The City Arms stands illuminated during the early evening on Kennedy Street in Manchester city centre, with two customers drinking beside a barrel table outside the traditional public house. Bright lamps light the green and gold fascia above the dark-painted frontage, while warm interior light is visible through the multi-paned windows. Hanging flower baskets, polished entrance doors, pint glasses and the compact pavement setting contribute to the appearance of a well-used local pub as daylight fades.
Located at 46-48 Kennedy Street, close to Albert Square, Manchester Town Hall and the city's historic municipal quarter, The City Arms is widely known for its emphasis on well-kept cask beer. Its comparatively modest frontage and narrow interior contrast with the larger civic and commercial buildings surrounding it. The pub has retained the intimate atmosphere of a traditional city-centre boozer rather than adopting the appearance of a modern chain bar or large entertainment venue.
The premises contain a compact two-room layout with surviving historic features and are included by CAMRA among pubs with interiors of recognised heritage interest. The bar is particularly associated with a frequently changing selection of hand-pulled real ales, alongside cider, whisky and gin. It has appeared regularly in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide and remains a popular destination for local drinkers, visiting beer enthusiasts and people seeking a traditional Manchester pub experience.
Central Manchester CAMRA named The City Arms its Pub of the Year for both 2024 and 2025, reflecting the venue's continuing reputation for cask ale quality and traditional hospitality. Its location near Manchester's civic heart has also made it a long-standing meeting place for office workers, councillors, visitors and city-centre regulars.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HCH4 - Barter Books is a second-hand bookshop located in the historic English market town of Alnwick, Northumberland owned and run by Stuart and Mary Manley. It has over 200,000 visitors a year, 40% of whom are from outside the area, and is one of the largest second-hand bookstores in Europe.[1] It is considered a local tourist attraction and has been described as the British Library of second-hand bookshops.
The bookshop is located within the Victorian Alnwick railway station, designed by William Bell and opened in 1887. It was in use until the closure of the Alnwick branch line in 1968. Barter Books was opened in 1991.
The shop is notable for its use of a barter system, whereby customers can exchange their books for credit against future purchases. Standard cash purchases are also available.
Barter Books has also been subject to crime on occasions. On the 3rd May 2007, a local newspaper, the Northumberland Gazette, reported that a book worth over £2,000 was returned to the book shop 5 years after it was stolen. It has also been subject to a scam which allowed thieves to take £200 in cash. However, the crime was dealt with in court.
Keep Calm and Carry On poster (1939)
Barter Books hit the headlines in 2000 when the owner discovered, in a box of old books bought at an auction, an old World War II poster from 1939. The slogan, Keep Calm and Carry On, and the simple design has turned it into an international phenomenon, and has been on the walls of places as diverse as Buckingham Palace, 10 Downing Street and the US Embassy in Belgium

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D96MWA - Appleton Thorn is a village in the borough of Warrington in Cheshire, England.
