Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3BKDJFF - Former brewery site: Stanhope Street, Liverpool, Merseyside, L8, England, UK
Higsons was a major Liverpool brewery founded in 1780, historically based on Stanhope Street in the Baltic Triangle area of the city. Brewing ceased in the 1990s, but the brand remains strongly associated with Liverpool brewing heritage. A close-up photograph of a Higsons Pale Ale cask ale beer clip mounted on a traditional handpull inside a Liverpool pub, England. The blue circular badge displays the Higsons branding, including the founding date of 1780 and the wording Liverpool's Original Beer, reinforcing the brand's deep association with the city's brewing history.
Higsons was one of Liverpool's most prominent historic breweries, operating for over two centuries from its main site on Stanhope Street before closing in the late twentieth century. The brewery played a significant role in Liverpool's pub culture, supplying beers to tied houses across the city and wider Merseyside.
Beer clips such as this are a defining feature of British cask ale service, used to identify the beer being served from hand-pulled pumps on pub bars. Their continued presence reflects the enduring popularity of traditional real ale and the influence of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) in preserving British beer heritage.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating British pub culture, real ale traditions, historic breweries, Liverpool's brewing heritage, cask ale service, alcohol branding, and the cultural significance of traditional pubs in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3BR174A - A brightly coloured street art mural featuring a large flaming heart with the words Love is a burning thing painted across its centre, photographed in Liverpool city centre, England. The heart is rendered in vivid reds, oranges, and yellows, surrounded by stylised flames that contrast strongly against the dark blue wall behind it.
The mural combines romantic imagery with bold graphic design, using simple lettering and high-impact colour to create an instantly recognisable visual statement. The phrase Love is a burning thing echoes well-known cultural and musical references, adding a layer of familiarity and emotional resonance for passers-by.
Liverpool has a strong tradition of public street art and murals, particularly in central areas associated with nightlife, music venues, and independent businesses. Works like this contribute to the city's visual identity, turning everyday urban spaces into informal galleries and popular photo locations for residents and visitors alike.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating street art in Liverpool, contemporary urban culture, public murals, romantic symbolism in art, city-centre regeneration, and the role of creative expression in modern British cities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T19PFD - Ask for Angela
The Met and the Mayor of London have joined together with Safer Sounds, part of the Safer Business Network, and licensed venues across the capital to help keep people safe while enjoying a night out.
The safety initiative Ask for Angela' is being rolled out to bars, clubs and other licensed businesses across London and other cities. People who feel unsafe, vulnerable or threatened can discreetly seek help by approaching venue staff and asking them for Angela'. This code-phrase will indicate to staff that they require help with their situation and a trained member of staff will then look to support and assist them. This might be through reuniting them with a friend, seeing them to a taxi, or by calling venue security and/or the police.
Venues that support Ask for Angela' have been given Welfare And Vulnerability Engagement (WAVE) training. Delivered by the Met's licensing officers and Safer Sounds, it gives staff the ability to help customers who may be in a situation that makes them vulnerable or unsafe.
Ask for Angela' was originally developed by Lincolnshire County Council and adopted by the Met in 2016 as a localised initiative by its police licensing officers. The introduction of WAVE training in 2017 underpinned the delivery of Ask for Angela and more venues began to take on the initiative.
Organisations can receive WAVE training through the Safer Sounds Partnership or via their local licensing team. The training explores what vulnerability is, how to identify it and appropriate interventions. A range of online assets and webinars are available.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X9BPAR - A historic Modern Pharmacy display photographed inside Dr Duncan's public house at 911 St John's Lane in Liverpool city centre, England. The image shows an ornate wooden cabinet with carved detailing, topped with the words Modern Pharmacy, and containing a framed portrait of a nineteenth-century gentleman, evoking the era of Victorian medicine and apothecaries.
Dr Duncan's is a well-known Liverpool pub housed in a former insurance building close to St John's Gardens and Lime Street. The interior features a range of period displays and historical references, reflecting the pub's Victorian origins and the city's wider social and medical history.
Pharmacy-themed displays such as this recall a time when medicine was dispensed by local chemists and apothecaries, often operating from richly decorated interiors designed to convey trust and authority. Their presence within a modern pub setting highlights the layered reuse of historic buildings in Liverpool's city centre.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating Victorian interiors, pharmacy and medical history, British pub heritage, adaptive reuse of historic spaces, Liverpool cultural history, and period decorative design.

The first Yates Wine Lodge opened in Oldham in 1884
On July 23, 1994, Yates became a public company owned by the Yates Group PLC (Yates Brothers Wine Lodges PLC). The Yates Group also owned Ha! Ha! Bar & Canteen and operated pubs under the Blob Shop and Addison's name. In the late 1990s, its share price rose to reach a high of 550p in 1998.

A very fine pub in central Liverpool which is one to compare with other excellent Heritage pubs on Merseyside - the Stork
in Birkenhead, the Prince Arthur
in Liverpool and the Edinburgh
in Crosby
Like them it is a Victorian building (in this case of c.1865) re-modelled about in the early 20th century. They all share corner sites with the public bar occupying the angle and surrounded by an L-shaped corridor. All too have beautiful tiled dados in their corridors dating from Edwardian re-modelling schemes (as seen in our picture). A further similarity is the way the corridor works to provide a drinking area.
Discovery of the documents submitted to the licensing justices enabled former licensee, John O'Dowd, to trace the evolution of the pub to its present form. Back in 1903 a plan shows the public bar laid out as it is now. There was a snug behind it in the heart of the building and left of this, and on the site of the present toilets, a public room labelled parlour'. Then in 1915 the Lion expanded by taking in the building next door at 28 Tithebarn Street also a licensed premises. This enabled the L-shaped corridor to be created round the public bar and the formation of two rooms behind this - a news room in the newly acquired area (the name still survives in the window glass) and a lounge where the skylight is today. Then in 1967, when pubs everywhere were being opened up, plans were drawn up to remove the walls to the corridor from these rooms. These were duly implemented and the corner entrance was blocked. (hence the pub does not merit entry in the Part One of the National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors. In 1979 they added glazed partitions, one outside the gents and one on the right as you enter the news room.
The porch on Moorfields side has mosaic floor and one tiled wall from floor to ceiling.
