The cathedral is dedicated to two saints, St Mary the Virgin and St Ethelbert the King. The latter was beheaded by Offa, King of Mercia in the year 794
Before this, Hereford had become the seat of a bishopric. It is said to have been the centre of a diocese as early as the 670s when Theodore of Tarsus, Archbishop of Canterbury, divided the Mercian diocese of Lichfield, founding Hereford for the Magons??te and Worcester for the Hwicce. In the 7th century the cathedral was refounded by Putta
Between the years 1226 and 1246, Lady Chapel was rebuilt in the Early English style?with a crypt beneath. Around the middle of the century the clerestory, and probably the vaulting of the choir, were rebuilt, having been damaged by the settling of the central tower
In the first half of the 14th century the rebuilding of the central tower, which is embellished with ball-flower ornaments, was carried out. At about the same time the chapter house and its vestibule were built, then Thomas Trevenant, who was bishop from 1389 to 1404, rebuilt the south end and groining of the great transept.
In 1841 the restoration work was begun, instigated by Dean Merewether, and was carried out by Lewis Nockalls Cottingham and his son, Nockalls.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHW8DG - David Lewis founded a small shop selling men's and boy's clothing in 1856. The sale of women's clothes began in 1864, and by the 1870s Lewis's Department Store was in full swing. There were sections for shoes and tobacco in addition to clothing.
Branches were opened in other cities, beginning with Manchester in 1877. Birmingham, Sheffield and Leicester followed soon after.
The building burnt down in the infamous fire of 1886, and was heavily bombed by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. Nevertheless, it was rebuilt each time, and was refurbished in 1957. This version included the statue ?Liverpool Resurgent', symbolising the city's renewed vigour following the horrors of the recent conflict.
Lewis's Department Store ? the fifth floor
The fifth floor of Lewis's has taken on an almost mythical status. In the store's heyday, the 1950s, the fifth floor was the place to dine in the self-service cafeteria or the Red Rose restaurant. You could also get your hair done in the salon.
A large mural decorated the walls, but this and the other features were hidden from the public in the 1980s. The floor was closed, and remained so until 2010 when it became the focus of an exhibition at the National Conservation Centre.
Gerald de Courcy Fraser designed the building in 1947 while, Fraser, Sons and Geary carried out construction. It is built from a steel frame with a Portland stone fa??ade.
There are several classical influences in the building. Red granite columns are topped with Ionic capitals, while the columns on the fourth floor are Tuscan in style. A two-storey colonnade above the corner entrance have Doric-style half columns.
Liverpool Resurgent
The statue Liverpool Resurgent is accompanied by relief panels depicting scenes of childhood. The figures in the panels are modelled on the sculptor Jacob Epstein's own children and grandchildren. These represent the younger generation which Liverpool was being rebuilt for.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTAF6 - Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, (27 January 1832 ? 14 January 1898), better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English writer of world-famous children's fiction, notably Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass. He was noted for his facility at word play, logic and fantasy. The poems Jabberwocky and The Hunting of the Snark are classified in the genre of literary nonsense. He was also a mathematician, photographer and Anglican deacon.
Carroll came from a family of High Church Anglicans, and developed a long relationship with Christ Church, Oxford, where he lived for most of his life as a scholar and teacher. It was the Dean of Christ Church, Henry Liddell, whose daughter Alice is widely identified as the original for Alice in Wonderland, though Carroll always denied this.
Several aspects of Carroll's life appear to confirm suspicions that he was a pedophile, though scholars have also made a credible case in his defence. In the absence of hard evidence, the issue of Carroll's hidden private life has provoked a lively debate, especially in recent times.
Dodgson was born in the small parsonage at Daresbury in Cheshire near the towns of Warrington and Runcorn, the eldest boy but already the third child of the four-and-a-half-year-old marriage. Eight more children followed. When Charles was 11, his father was given the living of Croft-on-Tees in North Yorkshire, and the whole family moved to the spacious rectory. This remained their home for the next 25 years.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PC9Y69 - Lewis Carroll was the son of Charles Dodgson, the Rector of All Saint's Church in Daresbury village and Frances Jane Lutwidge, his real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, the pen name Lewis Carroll is derived from his first 2 names, Charles and Lutwidge. He lived in the parsonage, which was bult in 1819, until 1843 when he was 11 years old when his father was given the living of Croft-on-Tees and the family went to live in North Yorkshire.
The parsonage was a large, double-fronted dwelling built from stone and hand made bricks, it had a schoolroom, parlour, cellars and seven upstairs rooms. Nine of Charles' ten siblings were also born in the house, his father took in paying pupils who stayed to learn Latin and Ancient Greek. The 1841 census lists a total of 22 people living in the house.
Though it was a happy home for the Dodgson family, the house was distant from the rector's parishoners at Daresbury. It was empty when it burnt down in around 1884.
The site contains a commemorative stone and a series of interpretive displays. The entrance to the parsonage is marked by a metal arch which echoes the archway that led into the original house, while the well, which once stood at the rear of the house, features a dormouse worked in metal. The sculpture which traces where the walls would have stood was designed by Christine Wilcox-Baker and crafted by Dave Broadbent. The site is now owned by the National Trust.

The London merchant misinterpreted the handwriting, understanding it to be a trade-name taken from the river Tweed that flows through the Scottish Borders. Subsequently, the goods were advertised as Tweed, and the name has remained ever since

Daresbury has a Lewis Carroll Visitor Centre and the parish church, All Saints, a Lewis Carroll window, including an image of the Cheshire Cat.
In 2006, the annual Creamfields dance festival was held in Daresbury after relocating from the disused Liverpool airport site it had occupied for the six previous years. This saw 40,000 revellers partying from 3pm-6am to a line-up that included live performances from The Prodigy and Zutons, as well as DJ sets from the likes of Sasha, Paul Oakenfold, 2 Many DJ's, Green Velvet and DJ Shadow. As of 2014, the festival has been an annual event at the site.
Daresbury is also the site of a software development office of IT (ITAM, ITSM, IT security) software company, Ivanti.
Daresbury is also an electoral ward. However, the boundary of the ward is different from (and larger than) the parish boundary, and includes the parishes of Moore, Halton and Preston Brook.

As you walk in there is bric-a-brac downstairs with soft furnishings at the rear. Upstairs are the wearables, shoes, clothes etc. I am told that they stock some quite posh stuff too. I did spot some people sporting Tommy Hilfiger tops in The Thai Cafe, although that might have been from a stall on Inverness Market. They did have mainland accents!
An on-line review I read said 'There\u2019s a nice selection of Posh womens hats and bags (Think weddings and church) and a range of womens wear and underwear which is mostly suited to the more mature lady but sometimes you can find a great modern \u201cyoung person\u201d piece'.

Stornoway was originally a Viking settlement its said and developed around its well sheltered natural harbour. Reflecting this, the name Stornoway itself is derived from 'Stj\u00f3rnav\u00e1gr', an Old Norse word for 'steering bay'.
Medieval development of the town was spurred by the construction of the original castle in the High Middle Ages by the Nicolson (or MacNicol) family, themselves of Viking descent. Infighting between rival clans continued throughout the Late Middle Ages and resisted an attempt by the then King of Scotland James VI to colonise Lewis in 1597.
The castle was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell's forces in the aftermath of his Scottish campaign in the mid 17th century, and the ownership of Stornoway - and by extension, Lewis - passed from the MacKenzies of Kintail through the Seaforth family and Sir James Matheson (and his descendants) to William Lever, 1st Viscount Leverhulme. Lord Leverhulme finally gifted the town's parish to the Stornoway Trust, whose ownership remains to this day.

I don't know if that rhyme reflects the Christian values of Lewis, but people do take the Sabbath seriously. Only recently were Sunday newspapers available, Sunday boat sailings and flights were resisted.
The Christian religion has deep roots in the Western Isles, but owing mainly to the different allegiances of the clans in the past, the people in the northern islands (Lewis, Harris, North Uist) have historically been predominantly Protestant, and those of the southern islands (Benbecula, South Uist, Barra) predominantly Roman Catholic. There are also small Episcopalian congregations in Lewis, though many of their members originate outside the island.
It has also generally been considered unacceptable for people to appear in church improperly dressed, although this is slowly changing. Violations of this nature might include the failure by women to wear a hat, or trousers being worn instead of a skirt, or the wearing of informal clothing such as jeans. In December 2005 the local council refused to conduct ceremonies for same-sex couples wishing to register under the Civil Partnerships Act 2004.

Aignish (Scottish Gaelic: Aiginis) is located northwest of Knock and east of Stornoway on the east coast of the Isle of Lewis (Scottish Gaelic: Le\u00f2dhas), Scotland. The township is at the island side of the isthmus connecting to the Eye peninsula.
Lewis is of Presbyterian tradition with a rich history, having once been part of the Norse Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. Today, life is very different from elsewhere in Scotland with Sabbath observance, the Gaelic language and peat cutting retaining more importance than elsewhere. Lewis has a rich cultural heritage as can be seen from its myths and legends as well as the local literary and musical traditions.
St Columba's Church, Aignish, Isle of Lewis.The crofting village contains the historic Eye Church (Scottish Gaelic: Eaglais na h-Aoidhe), a large pre-Reformation Church. The present church buildings are believed to be medieval, built during two separate construction phases. They were constructed on the site believed to be the cell of St. Catan, a contemporary of St. Columba. The church was the burial ground of the MacLeods of Lewis.
Saint Columba (7 December 521 \u2013 9 June 597 AD)\u2014also known as Colum Cille (Old Irish, meaning 'dove of the church'), Colm Cille (Irish), Calum Cille (Scottish Gaelic) and Kolban or Kolbj\u00f8rn (Old Norse, meaning 'black bear')\u2014was a Gaelic Irish missionary monk who propagated Christianity among the Picts during the Early Medieval Period. He was one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland.
In 563 he travelled to Scotland with twelve companions, where according to legend he first landed on the Kintyre Peninsula, near Southend. However, being still in sight of his native land he moved further north up the west coast of Scotland. In 563 he was granted land on the island of Iona off the west coast of Scotland which became the centre of his evangelising mission to the Picts.

The Lewis Chessmen (or Uig Chessmen, named after the bay where they were found) are a group of 78 12th-century chess pieces, most of which are carved in walrus ivory. Discovered in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, they may constitute some of the few complete, surviving medieval chess sets, although it is not clear if a set as originally made can be assembled from the pieces. They are owned and exhibited by the British Museum in London, which has 67 of the original pieces, and the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, which has the remaining 11 pieces.
A bishop is shown here when the pieces came back to Lewis for a short visit. Alex MacDonald, convener of Western Isles Council, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, welcomed the exhibition, which will ran through summer 2011 until the 12th September.
He said: 'The enigma of the Lewis Chessmen has intrigued and puzzled those who have viewed these inscrutable faces in the last 200 years or so. 'This will give our own community and visitors the opportunity to come face-to-face with faces which are over 800 years old.'
Pieces including a knight, king, queen and bishop were also on display at Uig Museum on 13 September for one day. Curators from National Museums Scotland and the British Museum were present to answer any queries from visitors.
The chessmen are one of the most significant archaeological discoveries ever made in Scotland.
The chessmen were probably made in Norway, perhaps by craftsmen in Trondheim, in the 12th century, although some scholars have suggested other sources in the Nordic countries. During that period the Outer Hebrides, along with other major groups of Scottish islands, were ruled by Norway.
According to Dr. Alex Woolf, director of the Institute for Medieval Studies of the University of St. Andrews, there are a number of reasons for believing the chess pieces probably came from Trondheim: a broken queen piece in a similar style found in an excavation of the archbishop's palace (it appeared the piece was broken as it was being made), the presence of wealthy people in Trondheim able to pay craftsmen for the high-quality pieces, similar carving in Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, the excavation in Trondheim of a kite-shaped shield similar to shields on some of the pieces and a king piece of similar design found on Hitra Island, near the mouth of Trondheim Fjord. Woolf has said that the armour worn by the chess figures includes 'perfect' reproductions of armour worn at the time in Norway.
Some historians believe that the Lewis chessmen were hidden (or lost) after some mishap occurred during their carriage from Norway to wealthy Norse towns on the east coast of Ireland, like Dublin. The large number of pieces and their lack of wear may suggest they were the stock of a trader or dealer in such pieces. Along with the chess pieces, there were 14 plain round tablemen for the game of tables and one belt buckle, all made of ivory, making a total of 93 artifacts.
On bishops, The Church of England today has dropped its prohibition on gay clergy in civil partnerships becoming bishops. The announcement, from the Church's House of Bishops, would allow gay clergy to become bishops if they promise to be celibate.
Conservative evangelical Anglicans say they will fight the move in the Church's ruling general synod.
The issue has split the church since 2003 amid a row over gay cleric Jeffrey John becoming Bishop of Reading. Mr John, now Dean of St Albans, was forced to withdraw from the role shortly after having initially accepted it, following protests from traditionalists.
He was also a candidate for Bishop of Southwark in 2010 but was rejected. Evidence emerged that this was because of his sexual orientation. The Church of England has already agreed to allow people in civil partnerships to become clergy, provided they promised they would remain celibate.
I am not so sure that Norsemen had this issue to deal with. It was probably a simpler world back then!

King James VI granted ownership of Lewis to the Mackenzies of Kintail in 1610. By about 1680, Lord Seaforth had established his estate house, Seaforth Lodge, on the Gearraidh Chruaidh, an area of rough sheiling ground on the west side of Stornoway harbour. Parts of this original building can still be seen within the stripped out walls of the mezzanine at the rear of the present Castle.
The castle was built in the years 1847-57 as a country house for Sir James Matheson who had bought the whole island a few years previously with his fortune from the Chinese Opium trade. It was designed by the Glasgow architect Charles Wilson.
In 1918, the Lewis estate including the castle was bought by soap industrialist Lord Leverhulme from the Matheson family. He gifted the castle to the people of Stornoway parish in 1923.
During World War II the Castle was taken over as accommodation for air and ground crew of 700 Naval Air Squadron, who operated a detachment of six Supermarine Walrus aircraft from a slipway at Cuddy Point in the Grounds. The base was referred to as HMS Mentor. It was also used for accommodation for students of Lews Castle College in the 1950s.
Today the building is owned by the local council, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (CNES) and is category A listed building.
The rather spooky wicker woman in the grounds of the castle (castle green) was created in July 2010 at the time of the Hebridean Celtic Festival.

This memorial is built at the site of the former Aignish Farm, the place of confrontation between the crofters and the landowners, to commemorate a phase of the highland land struggle.
The Aignish riot of 9 January 1888 was one of the most potentially disastrous confrontations of the period, especially running so soon after the Pairc deer raiders 'riot'. At the Aignish farm site a flag was unfurled to summon the people and an estimated 500 men had gathered in a short time, some with the intention of driving away all cattle and sheep from the farm.
Those animals which they did not succeed in driving into the sea they crippled by breaking their legs with clubs. Policemen and marines who arrived on the scene were pelted with stones and the raiders were only dispersed after being confronted at bayonet point by a detachment of the Royal Scots Regiment. The riot act was read out in English and Gaelic and by the end of the day 11 people were arrested and were imprisoned in nearby Stornoway. After the crowd had driven the sheep and cattle some distance they turned them back and past the farm
The iconic design reflects the idea of confrontation and takes the form of two stone structures of local stone approx 4.5 metres in height, each with a flat face from which jagged stones protrude. These pillars have curved backs and taper in towards the top. The jagged stones face each other, reflecting the aggression and tension of the event. In my opinion it is best seen at sunset or sunrise when, with a wind blowing you can hear the distant echo's of the crowd that day. It was a dark time for the Highlands and Islands and was to force more islanders to leave for ships west to the america.

It is a clever nod to the cult classic film 'The Wicker Man' (or the Wickerman) which was set on a fictional Summerisle, a remote Hebridean island famed for its popular and unusually abundant fruit produce. The film stars Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt, and Britt Ekland. Paul Giovanni composed the soundtrack.
The story centres on the visit of Police Sergeant Howie to the isolated island of Summerisle, in search of a missing girl the locals claim never existed. Howie, a devout Christian, is appalled to find that the inhabitants of the island practise a form of Celtic paganism.
The film was shot almost entirely in the small Scottish towns of Gatehouse of Fleet, Newton Stewart, Kirkcudbright and a few scenes in the village of Creetown in Dumfries and Galloway, as well as Plockton in Ross-shire.
The Wicker Man had moderate success and won first prize in the 1974 Festival of Fantastic Films in Paris, but largely slipped into obscurity. In 1977 the American film magazine Cinefantastique devoted a commemorative issue to the film, asserting that the film is 'the Citizen Kane of horror movies' \u2013 an oft-quoted phrase attributed to this issue

The Herring Girls played an important part in The history of Stornoway.
The Fishing Industry afforded many families a wage and indeed a living.
The work of women in the heyday of the Herring fishery has been well documented, with plays being written and performed , poetry being written about these brave hardworking girls. Here is a brief summary of the herring girls.
In Stornoway the work of women in the heyday of the Herring fishery is commemorated by two statues, one on North Beach Quay and the other on South Beach Quay.
The picture above shows a herring girl working gutting a herring. The girl has a barrel similar to those that were used in the herring industry throughout the 19th and 20th century.
The Herring Industry in 1914
In 1914 a combined 20% of the Isle of Lewis' population (3,000 women and another 1,600 men) were involved in the herring industry.In the early 20th century the fishing ports of Scotland were packed with women who worked the summer gutting herring, before heading down the east coast of England following the fishing.
For the women of that time there wasn't much work available and even though being a herring girl was jolly hard work - with long long hours and very low wages many of the girls loved the company of the other girls and looked forward to the start of the herring season. Although many of the girls working in the Stornoway herring industry - came from The Islands - they also worked alongside girls who came from all over Scotland - these girls travelled from port to port - wherever the work was on offer.

The town's population is around 8,000, making it the largest town in the Hebrides, with a third of the population of the civil parish of Stornoway, which includes various nearby villages and has a population of approximately 12,000.
Stornoway is an important port and the major town and administrative centre of the Outer Hebrides. It is home to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (the Western Isles Council) and a variety of educational, sporting and media establishments. Observance of the Christian Sabbath (Sunday) has long been an aspect of the island's culture. Recent changes mean that Sunday on Lewis is now less different from Sunday on the other Western Isles or the mainland of Scotland.

Aignish (Scottish Gaelic: Aiginis) is located northwest of Knock and east of Stornoway on the east coast of the Isle of Lewis (Scottish Gaelic: Le?dhas), Scotland. The township is at the island side of the isthmus connecting to the Eye peninsula.
Lewis is of Presbyterian tradition with a rich history, having once been part of the Norse Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. Today, life is very different from elsewhere in Scotland with Sabbath observance, the Gaelic language and peat cutting retaining more importance than elsewhere. Lewis has a rich cultural heritage as can be seen from its myths and legends as well as the local literary and musical traditions.
St Columba's Church, Aignish, Isle of Lewis.The crofting village contains the historic Eye Church (Scottish Gaelic: Eaglais na h-Aoidhe), a large pre-Reformation Church. The present church buildings are believed to be medieval, built during two separate construction phases. They were constructed on the site believed to be the cell of St. Catan, a contemporary of St. Columba. The church was the burial ground of the MacLeods of Lewis.

One of my favourite guitarists and cool too. Once when asked by an activist in 1970 'What would you change in America today'? He replied 'They should wear more colourful gear'. He also said 'Music doesn't lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music'. Indeed!
Born in Seattle James Marshall 'Jimi' Hendrix worked as a jobbing guitarist until being introduced to London in 1966/7. Hendrix learned to play by practicing almost constantly, watching others play, getting tips from more experienced players, and listening to records. In mid-1959, his father bought Hendrix a white 'Supro Ozark'.
Chas Chandler who was ending his tenure as bassist in The Animals and looking for talent to manage and produce. Chandler liked the song 'Hey Joe' and was convinced he could create a hit single with the right artist. It was Hendrix who he brought to London for that very reason. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was born.
'All Along the Watchtower' was an original Bob Dylan track and was included on the classic double 'Electric Ladyland' album. Several reviewers have pointed out that the lyrics in 'All Along the Watchtower' echo lines in the Book of Isaiah, Chapter 21, verses 5-9. The single reached number five in the British charts.
Dylan has described his reaction to hearing Hendrix's version: 'It overwhelmed me, really. He had such talent, he could find things inside a song and vigorously develop them. He found things that other people wouldn't think of finding in there. He probably improved upon it by the spaces he was using. I took license with the song from his version, actually, and continue to do it to this day.' In the booklet accompanying his Biograph album, Dylan said: 'I liked Jimi Hendrix's record of this and ever since he died I've been doing it that way... Strange how when I sing it, I always feel it's a tribute to him in some kind of way.'

The Lewis War Memorial is a war memorial dedicated to the men who lost their lives in World War I from the Lewis area (Outer Hebrides, Scotland). Completed in 1924, it is situated at the highest point of the town of Stornoway, and is visible for miles around.
It can no longer be climbed. Iron plaques containing the names of the fallen, many hundred (1151) are now presented on a faux stone circle at its foot.
From January to July 1920, the pages of the Stornoway Gazette carried advertisements appealing for subscriptions towards the building costs of a suitable memorial that would cost at least \u00a310,000 and more probably \u00a320,000. The response was overwhelming. As a spur to generous donations, it was announced that an anonymous resident was willing to double the amount subscribed to \u00a35,000 - this resident was later discovered to be Lord Leverhulme himself.
For more historical details, consult the excellent Stornoway Historical Society website. Better still consider a trip right up there to the top left edge of Britain, its cool.

We certainly are and it can lay a heavy weight on our mind. Children and animals seem blissfully unaware of it, innocent or ignorant.
Animals must have fears. Those of losing the flock or of attack etc. However just that concentration on food, sleep, mating and survival makes them live for the moment. Wounded animals often retire to a quiet place to rest and die
A knowledge of death maybe should help us appreciate life more, live every day as it were our last. Regret what we did, rather than did not do.

This track can be found on the LP Deuce, the second solo album by Rory Gallagher, released in 1971. In contrast with his previous album, Rory Gallagher, which he believed to have a precise, organised sound, Deuce was an effort by Gallagher to capture the energy of a live performance.
Deuce was recorded at Tangerine Studios in Dalston with Gerry McAvoy on bass guitar and Wilgar Campbell on drums and percussion. In order to capture the feeling of a live performance that Gallagher wanted, he would often record immediately before or after live performances while keeping production at a minimum.
Rory Gallagher was born in County Donegal, Ireland and recorded many albums across the 1970's and 80's. He was a talanted guitarist. He died in 1995 after MRSA complications from a liver transplant in London.
After winning a talent contest when he was twelve, Gallagher began performing in his adolescence with both his acoustic guitar, and an electric guitar he bought with his prize money. However, it was his purchase three years later, of a 1961 Fender Stratocaster for \u00a3100 that became his primary instrument most associated with him for the span of his lifetime.
Rory inspired many musicians including Brian May of Queen, Johnny Marr of the Smiths, Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest and U2's edge. There is an old story about Jimi Hendrix being asked by an interviewer after Woodstock what it was like to be the greatest guitar player in the world. Hendrix replied that he did not know. 'Go ask Rory Gallagher'.
There is a 'best of' collection also named 'Crest Of A Wave'. That's a good starting point for getting to know some of this legend's work.

Here, the trawler 'Wave Crest' pulls into Stornoway at dusk to off-load todays catch at the harbour. The gulls are around to catch any waste thrown from the boat. The vessel bears the registration number SY3 signifying its home port of Stornoway in the isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland.
Fishing has declined all over Britain due to reduced stocks, over fishing and quotas from the EU. There appear to be a healthy number of fishing boats in the harbour and it woul dbe good to think that here on the far north west of the british isles, they were booking the trend often seen elsewhere.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4810459600 - 'Norrie Dan Mackay is pictured here at 'The Bus Stop', Barvas, Isle of Lewis. His official job title is River Watcher, he's from Carloway and travels to the bus each evening and heads back home on the 7am public bus the following morning.
He is a crofter as well with many sheep so that fills up a lot of his time, he's been a River Watcher for a long as I can remember and he's pretty good crack my friend Donna has to say. He keeps an eye on the poachers, particularly here as its where fish come inshore to spawn. A particularly beautiful spot on Lewis. Having been taken here by Donna I am quite jealous of the sunsets and other features that come as standard on this piece of Hedrides coast looking straight out on to the fierce Atlantic. Norrie Dan has also got a boat and spends time sea fishing in the summer months.
In the surfing magazine the spot where the surfers go is called the Bus Stop, but the official name of the where this bus (with a bedroom in the back) is parked is called Croig. The bus has also been featured in a book called Fishing Huts by Jo Orchard-Lisle, Check it out here - www.fishing-huts.com/fishing-huts-inside.html
I have been coming here for over 10 years and the islands and people never cease to amaze me. They always are welcoming and everyone should have the chance to experience the hospitality of the islands and of course the best black pudding in Britain from Charles MacLeod's shop in Stornoway.

Stornoway Town Hall is a former town hall in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland. The first town hall on this site was completed in 1905 but was burnt down in 1918. The current building was completed in 1929.
After the abolition of the Stornoway Town Council, the building was used as the home of the arts centre An Lanntair for some years and now acts as a multi-purpose venue, playing host to various commercial and community activities.
The clock tower in the centre building gained some fame from the Calum Kennedy song 'Lovely Stornoway'

Great wee family run chip shop in the pedestrian area of stornoway.
Glass fronted shop so it\u2019s not difficult to miss.
Food is great, fish &
chips is highly recommended, though it\u2019s advisable to order in earlier so you don\u2019t have to queue as at dinner times the queue is often out the door!
All the usual chips, burgers, sausages, chicken and pies etc and they also do great onion rings.
Chips with gravy or curry sauce is a favourite at lunch times as is a cheeky chips (chips with a battered pork sausage)
Friendly staff and quick service unless your order has to be made right away.
Always busy at lunch times with school children (between 1 and 2)
They also sell fresh milk in pint bottles, soft drinks, water and do a great soft serve ice cream which is highly recommended.

Christian observance of the Sabbath is an important aspect of the town's culture and on Sunday the town is grid-locked by church going folk, getting in and out of the town.
Indeed until recently there were no flights or ferries to Lewis on Sunday and (thankfully) no newspapers that day.
Stornoway was originally a Viking settlement and developed around its well sheltered natural harbour. The name Stornoway itself is derived from 'Stjornavagr', an Old Norse word for 'steering bay'.
The annual Hebridean Celtic Festival is a 4-day community led festival which attracts over 10,000 visitors during July of each year. The Royal National Mod has been held in Stornoway on a number of occasions.

In the early 1900s, Murdo MacLeod left the village of Keose on the Isle of Lewis bound for South America to work on a Patagonian sheep farm. An expert judge and buyer of livestock, Murdo's employer, Jose Menendez, held him in high esteem. So much so, that on his return to the Isle of Lewis, Murdo was asked to include Menendez in the name of his first-born child. These Callanish Stones (or 'Callanish I'), Clachan Chalanais or Tursachan Chalanais in Gaelic, are situated near the village of Callanish (Gaelic: Calanais) on the west coast of the isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides (Western Isles), Scotland. Construction of the site probably took place around 2900 and 2600 BC, though there were possibly earlier buildings before 3000 BC. A tomb was later built into the site. Thirteen primary stones form a circle about 13 metres in diameter, with a long approach avenue of stones to the north, and shorter stone rows to the east, south, and west (possibly incomplete avenues). The overall layout of the monument recalls a distorted Celtic cross. The individual stones vary from around 1 m to 5 m in height, with an average of 4 metres, and are of the local course Lewisian gneiss.
The site is very haunting at sunset when the visitors have gone.

The owners of Lewis's have gone into administration many times over the years, including 1991. The first store, which opened in Liverpool city centre, became the flagship of the chain of stores operating under the Lewis's name. Several stores in the chain were bought in 1991 by the company Owen Owen and continued to operate under the Lewis's brand name for several years, but after the closure of the Manchester store in 2001, only the original Liverpool store continued to trade under the Lewis's name. This store was sold in 2007 to the Vergo Retail Ltd and closed in 2010.
The first Lewis's was opened in 1856 in Liverpool by entrepreneur David Lewis, as a men's and boys' clothing store, mostly manufacturing his own stock. In 1864, Lewis's branched out into women's clothing. In the 1870s, the store expanded and added departments, including shoes in 1874, and tobacco in 1879. Also in 1879, Lewis's opened one of the world's first 'Christmas grottoes' in Lewis's Bon March??, Church Street, Liverpool. It was named 'Christmas Fairyland'. His motto was Friends of the People, and he intended the shopping experience to be inclusive
The first Lewis's outside Liverpool opened in nearby Manchester in 1877. Another store was opened, at the suggestion of Joseph Chamberlain, on the new Corporation Street in Birmingham in 1885. The Manchester store included a full scale ballroom on the fifth floor, which was also used for exhibitions. Buying offices were also located on the fifth floor until a takeover by Liverpool-based competitor Owen Owen

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel by English author Lewis Carroll (the pseudonym of Charles Dodgson). It tells of a young girl named Alice, who falls through a rabbit hole into a subterranean fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children.
The Daniell Chapel contains one of the best-known features of All Saints', the Lewis Carroll Memorial Window. To mark the centenary of his birth, Carroll enthusiasts from all over the world subscribed to a memorial fund, which resulted in a gift to All Saints' of this striking and unusual stained glass window, dedicated in 1935.
The window was designed by the stained glass artist Geoffrey Webb and depicts a Nativity scene, at which both Carroll and Alice are present. Below the Nativity scene are 5 panels illustrated with characters and scenes from Alice in Wonderland including the White Rabbit, the Lizard, the Dodo, the Caterpillar, Fish-Footman, Mad Hatter, Dormouse, March Hare, Duchess, Gryphon, Mock Turtle, Knave and Queen of Hearts. The famous Cheshire Cat can be found in the centre of the fifth panel. The 3 centre panels contain verses from the Lewis Carroll's poem ?Christmas Greetings (From a Fairy to a Child)'.
Geoffrey Webb's mark was a spider's web that he would incorporate into the design of his windows. The web can be found in the fifth section of the Window, just above the Queen of Hearts and includes the date ?1935'.
