The result was a media circus when every problem large or small received front-page coverage and the entire project derided as an example of BR's incompetence. The trains were withdrawn from service again by the end of the month, to the great amusement of the press.
The problems were eventually solved and the trains quietly reintroduced in 1984 with much greater success. By this time the competing High Speed Train, powered by a conventional diesel engine and lacking the APT's tilt and performance, had gone through development and testing at a rapid rate and was now forming the backbone of BR's passenger service. All support for the APT project collapsed as anyone in authority distanced themselves from what was being derided as a failure. Plans for a production version, APT-S, were abandoned, and the three APT-Ps ran for just over a year before being withdrawn again over the winter of 1985/6. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JX2RPH - There are mainly two types of ice cream vans in the United Kingdom: a hard van, which sells scoop ice cream and is only equipped with a freezer and a soft van, which has a freezer and also a soft serve whippy machine for serving ice cream cones and screwballs. They are usually converted from factory standard vans with the rear cut away and replaced with a fibre glass body (to reduce the weight).
Because of the British climate, running an ice cream van profitably is not only very difficult outside summer, but is also an unpredictable business. A summer heatwave can provoke a massive upturn in fortunes for a few days, but after the weather has cooled sales drop off dramatically. The need to take advantage of rare and short-lived opportunities can result in fierce rivalry between ice cream vans in coterminous areas, with the main disputes being over who is entitled to sell ice cream in a particular 'patch'. This has also led to some ice cream van vendors diversifying and selling other products such as crisps, chips, burgers or hot dogs from their vehicles at other times of the year.
In a number of Local Authority areas, particularly in London Boroughs with existing street markets, street trading regulations prohibit ice cream vans from remaining in one static location. The legislation also contains powers to ban ice-cream vans from specific streets. Proposals in the current London Local Authorities Bill would allow only 15 minutes trading per vehicle per street each day. There also exists a nationwide code of practice for the use of chimes, which limits the volume to 80 dB and the duration to twelve seconds, but these are rarely observed nor enforced. Chimes must not be played more often than every three minutes, near hospitals, schools and churches when they are in use.

It was designed by William Henry Hunter and built by Sir William Arrol & Co. The bridge has a span of 200 ft (61 m), is 30 ft (9.1 m) wide, 76 ft (23 m) feet above high water level, with an overall length of 339 ft (103 m) feet and a total height of 89 ft (27 m)
It was constructed in 1915 and fell into disuse in approximately 1964. The bridge was constructed to connect the two parts of the large chemical and soap works of Joseph Crosfield and Sons. It was originally designed to carry rail vehicles up to 18 long tons (18 tonnes) in weight, and was converted for road vehicles in 1940. In 1953, it was further modified to carry loads of up to 30 long tons (30 tonnes)

Network Rail is seeking listed building consent to refurbish Monks Siding Signal Box in Sankey Bridges and give it the loving attention that it rightly deserves.
The Grade II-listed building sits on Quay Fold next to the railway line which connects Warrington Bank Quay and Liverpool South Parkway train stations.
It was built in 1875 and still retains its original 20-lever LNWR tumbler frame.
The signal box is a two-storey timber framed structure. The ground floor houses signalling equipment which is operated by a signaller from the first floor.
The application submitted to Warrington Borough Council proposes all external work, including the repair of timber and guttering.
The timber will then be prepared for painting, before being painted in a colour which matches the existing colour scheme.
Surrounding vegetation and debris to perimeter of signal box will be removed as required, with wrought iron repairs being carried out as required.
Documents submitted as part of the application state: The proposed development is considered necessary to improve and extend the safe operation of the station.
This in turn preserves the building's character and use.
The proposal will not be to the detriment of the building's historic character.

This business was to become the firm of Joseph Crosfield and Sons.
Early life
Joseph Crosfield was born in Warrington, the fourth son of George Crosfield and his wife Ann n??e Key. The Crosfield family had been Quakers since the time of George Fox and this tradition was maintained by George and subsequently by Joseph. George Crosfield was a wholesale grocer in Warrington who also had interests in a sugar-refining business in Liverpool. The family moved to Lancaster in 1799 for George to develop a sugar-refining business there, while still keeping an interest in his grocery business in Warrington under the care of his assistant, Joseph Fell. Nothing is known of Joseph's early life in Lancaster. From September 1807, a time close to his 15th birthday, he was apprenticed for 6 years to Anthony Clapham, a druggist and chemist in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. By 1811 Anthony Clapham was also a soap manufacturer.
In 1814, Joseph's apprenticeship having finished, at the age of 21 he decided to establish his own soap making business in Warrington. At this time soap manufacturing was growing rapidly in the Mersey bad recently developed canals and river navigations in the area which allowed for easier transport of the raw materials into the factories and for the distribution of the finished products. A number of new large soaperies had recently been established in the nearby towns of St Helens, Runcorn and Liverpool.
Joseph Crosfield's soapery was established on the north bank of a loop of the river Mersey in an area known as Bank Quay, near to urban Warrington but at that time separated from it by a stretch of fields. Other industrial premises were nearby. The premises occupied that of a failed wire mill were sourced

Planning permission is being sought to construct three five-storey blocks of flats on the former Beers Timber and Building Supplies yard on Station Road.
In total, the scheme would see 33 one-bedroom apartments, 126 two-bedroom flats and 30 three-bedroom units created for private rent in addition to 232 parking spaces.
The 1.75 hectare site, bordering the Cantilever Bridge and Manchester Ship Canal, has been vacant since March 2006 having first become a timber yard in 1965.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTA16 - Lever Brothers was a British manufacturing company founded in 1885 by brothers William Hesketh Lever (1851?1925) and James Darcy Lever (1854?1916). They invested in and successfully promoted a new soap-making process invented by chemist William Hough Watson. In 1930, Lever Brothers merged with Margarine Unie to form Unilever.
Starting with a small grocery business begun by his father, William Lever and his brother James entered the soap business in 1885 by buying a small soap works in Warrington. The brothers teamed up with a Bolton chemist, William Hough Watson, who became an early business partner. Watson invented the process which resulted in a new soap, using glycerin and vegetable oils such as palm oil, rather than tallow. The resulting soap was a good, free-lathering soap, at first named Honey Soap then later named Sunlight Soap. Production reached 450 tons per week by 1888. Larger premises were built on marshes at Bromborough Pool on the Wirral Peninsula at what became Port Sunlight. Though the company was named Lever Brothers, William Lever's brother and co-director James never took a major part in running the business. He fell ill in 1895, probably as a result of diabetes, and resigned his directorship two years later.

W.B. Dick and Company was founded in 1854 in Glasgow by William Bruce Dick. The company were initially oil refiners and manufacturers of paint used for coating the bottom of ships. They had depots and works in Glasgow, Liverpool, Newcastle, Barrow-in-Furness, Cardiff and Hamburg by 1890. From 1883 the company joined with John Kerr and under its new name, expanded into tramway equipment and rolling stock and built around fifty locomotives up to 1919.
In 1890 it took limited company status, as railway and tramway appliance makers and as iron and steel founders and electricians. They invested in and successfully promoted a new soap-making process invented by chemist William Hough Watson. In 1930, Lever Brothers merged with Margarine Unie to form Unilever.
Starting with a small grocery business begun by his father, William Lever and his brother James entered the soap business in 1885 by buying a small soap works in Warrington. The brothers teamed up with a Bolton chemist, William Hough Watson, who became an early business partner. Watson invented the process which resulted in a new soap, using glycerin and vegetable oils such as palm oil, rather than tallow. The resulting soap was a good, free-lathering soap, at first named Honey Soap then later named Sunlight Soap. Production reached 450 tons per week by 1888. Boddingtons was best known for Boddingtons Bitter (Boddies), a straw-golden, hoppy bitter which was one of the first beers to be packaged in cans containing a widget, giving it a creamy draught-style head.
In the 1990s, the beer was promoted as The Cream of Manchester in a popular advertising campaign credited with raising Manchester's profile. Boddingtons became one of the city's most famous products after Manchester United and Coronation Street.
Whitbread bought Boddingtons Brewery in 1989 and Boddingtons Bitter received an increased marketing budget and nationwide distribution. Boddingtons achieved its peak market share in 1997 and at the time was exported to over forty countries.
Boddingtons beer brands are now owned by the global brewer Anheuser?Busch InBev, which acquired the Whitbread Beer Company in 2000. Strangeways Brewery closed in 2004 and production of pasteurised (keg and can) Boddingtons was moved to Samlesbury in Lancashire. Production of the cask-conditioned beer moved to Hydes Brewery in Moss Side, Manchester, until it was discontinued in 2012, ending the beer's association with the city.

The brothers teamed up with a Bolton chemist, William Hough Watson, who became an early business partner. Watson invented the process which resulted in a new soap, using glycerin and vegetable oils such as palm oil, rather than tallow.
The resulting soap was a good, free-lathering soap, at first named Honey Soap then later named Sunlight Soap. Production reached 450 tons per week by 1888. Larger premises were built on marshes at Bromborough Pool on the Wirral Peninsula at what became Port Sunlight.
Though the company was named Lever Brothers, William Lever's brother and co-director James never took a major part in running the business. He fell ill in 1895, probably as a result of diabetes, and resigned his directorship two years later

Locals tell me that a trip there was an experience as a child, maybe getting whipped up to the 1st floor for school shoes, sunday best or uniform. I have certainly taken a few shots of it over the years, its a Stornoway icon, (almost as famous as butchers Macleod & MacleodsBlack Pudding or Irn Bru Sausages).
As you walk in there is bric-a-brac downstairs with soft furnishings at the rear. Upstairs are the wearables, shoes, clothes etc. I am told that they stock some quite posh stuff too. I did spot some people sporting Tommy Hilfiger tops in The Thai Cafe, although that might have been from a stall on Inverness Market. They did have mainland accents!
An on-line review I read said iThere's a nice selection of Posh womens hats and bags (Think weddings and church) and a range of womens wear and underwear which is mostly suited to the more mature lady but sometimes you can find a great modern young person piece./i

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4475858832 - 'The Cantilever Ship Canal bridge (rightly called the Latchford High Level Bridge) B5157 connects Fairfield and Station Road in south Warrington. The latter was the location of Latchford station (Cheshire Lines), then Cantilever garden centre and now Cantilever Mansions, a collection of modern flats.
Here, the wet iron girders on the bridge is picking tp the low setting sun, in a nice golden yellow.
The bridge can remain in situ for all but the tallest ships and generally is used as a rat run when other hydraulic powered road bridges are opened.
In the area are Cantiliver Park (home to Warrington Town football club, eclipsed by the mighty Wires Rugby club) and the excellent Canteliver chippy (who will do Pea-wet if asked nicely).
The book 'History of the Manchester Ship Canal from Its Inception to Its Completion' records it as having a weight in steel of 783 tons. Also its centre span is recorded as 206 feet. In contrast the swing bridges at Knutsford and Northwich roads is only 120 feet.
Below the bridge was the old Beers timber yard. This is now being dissasembled.

The Warburton Toll Bridge crosses the Manchester Ship Canal on the B5159 road, connecting Warrington with Trafford. There was an old stone bridge across the now dried up bed of the diverted River Mersey from 1863, there was an original toll for this.
The toll contributes towards the maintenance of the high level bridge style metal bridge and approach road. There is a limit of 3 tons on the bridge. The last time I crossed it was 12p. I believe a 25p ticket can be taken and used all day, a bit like the Thelwall ferry www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/4337673883/ . There is also an annual pass from the MSCC.
If you cross, tolls are charged from 7am till 10pm Monday to Friday, from 8am Saturday and 9am on a Sunday. At 10pm until the following morning there is no charge to cross. Apparently its one of the few remaining pre-motorway toll bridges in the UK and the only one in Greater Manchester. So a little bit of history.

Birkenhead had the first street tramway in Europe. Opened on 29 August 1860 the first line ran from Woodside (adjoining the terminal of the Mersey Ferry) to Birkenhead Park. This early system was horse-drawn and was the brainchild of flamboyant American, George Francis Train. A preserved tram was on display in the Woodside ferry terminal booking hall.
The system was later electrified and operated from 1901 as Birkenhead Corporation Tramways. Two replica trams, imported from Hong Kong, have been brought into service as part of a heritage tramway between Woodside and Wirral Transport Museum, and Birkenhead Corporation Tramways Car No.20 is preserved on this line and shown here.

It was opened in 1961 as a replacement for the Widnes-Runcorn Transporter Bridge, and was initially known simply as the Runcorn Bridge or Runcorn?Widnes Bridge. In 1975?77 it was widened, after which it was given its official name in honour of the Queen's Silver Jubilee.
It carries the A533 road and a cantilevered footway. The bridge has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed structure
The new bridge had to allow the passage of shipping along the Manchester Ship Canal. Many ideas were considered, including a new transporter bridge or a swing bridge. These were considered to be impractical and it was decided that the best solution was a high-level bridge upstream from the railway bridge. This would allow the least obstruction to shipping and would also be at the narrowest crossing point.
The first plan for a high-level bridge was a truss bridge with three or five spans, giving a 24 feet (7 m) dual carriageway with a cycle track and footpaths. This was abandoned because it was too expensive, and because one of the piers would be too close to the wall of the ship canal. The next idea was for a suspension bridge with a span of 1,030 feet (314 m) between the main towers with a 24 feet (7 m) single carriageway and a 6-foot (2 m) footpath. However aerodynamic tests on models of the bridge showed that, while the bridge itself would be stable, the presence of the adjacent railway bridge would cause severe oscillation.
The finally accepted design was for a steel through arch bridge with a 30-foot (9 m) single carriageway. The design of the bridge is similar to that of Sydney Harbour Bridge but differs from it in that the side spans are continuous with the main span rather than being separate from them. The Lady Lever Art Gallery is set in the garden village of Port Sunlight, on the Wirral and one of the National Museums Liverpool.
The museum is a significant surviving example of late Victorian and Edwardian taste. It houses major collections of fine and decorative art that are an expression of Lord Leverhulme's personal taste and collecting interests. The collection is strong in British 19th-century painting and sculpture, spilling over to include late 18th-century and early 20th works. There are important collections of English furniture, Wedgwood, especially jasperware, and Chinese ceramics, and smaller groups of other types of objects, such as Ancient Greek vases and Roman sculpture. The majority of objects were part of the original donation, but the collection has continued to expand at a modest rate. The museum displays mostly mixed paintings, sculpture and furniture together, and there are five Period Rooms recreating typical period interiors from large houses.
The Building was commissioned in 1913 from architects William and Segar Owen, the Lady Lever Art Gallery was built in the Beaux-Arts style. The building was opened in 1922 by Princess Beatrice, the youngest daughter of Queen Victoria.
In 2015 part of the museum was closed for building works, with little of the ceramics collections on display, but most of the other collections. A touring exhibition visited museums in Japan and elsewhere. The redeveloped South End galleries were restored to their original architecture style as part of a ?2.8 million restoration project in 2016. The work included opening up original doorways to increase the circulation of visitors, improving the lighting and restoring some of the original vaulted ceilings

Formed in 1949 by Jimmy Drinkwater, the club was initially named Stockton Heath Albion and competed in the Warrington and District League until 1953, when they moved to the Mid Cheshire League. Freddie Worrall became manager at the same time, and during a 13-year spell in charge, the club won the league in 1959?60 plus the League Cup in three consecutive seasons during the 1950s. Exeter West Signal Box was originally built as a temporary structure by the Great Western Railway in 1913 following the enlargement of Exeter St. David's station It was located to the west of the station, controlling the junction for the London & South Western Railway's line to Waterloo and connections to the goods lines avoiding the station, the engine shed and various yards.
The signal box contained a lever frame of 114 levers, but this was replaced in 1959 by an even larger new frame of 131 levers. The box remained in use until 1985, when colour light signalling controlled electrically from a new signal box at Exeter was brought into use. After closure of Exeter West in 1985, the Exeter West Group moved in and dismantled the signal box, marking each of the hundreds of parts for future reference.
At first, all of the parts were moved to Bristol and a start was made on restoring the box to be a feature at Temple Meads station. However, by summer 1988 it was clear that this project had foundered, but a home was offered at the proposed Swindon Heritage Centre. Everything was moved there, and restoration work continued until 1990. However a seemingly indefinite postponement of the heritage project at Swindon made it necessary to seek another site.
Finally a home was found here at Crewe. Having moved all of the many parts, a start was finally made on the complex task of putting the box back together again in May 1991, the structure was complete and weatherproofed by the end of that year, and the Internal rebuilding continued through 1992. The signal box was formally opened to the public on May Day 1993.
