History
A product of the last generation of cotton mill building, Leigh Spinners was designed by Bolton architects Bradshaw, Gass & Hope for the Horrocks Company, and built in two phases. The east section comprising the six-storey mill, boiler house and chimney stack was built in 1913 and the matching west section was completed ten years later. One of the few double mills to be completed, it is one of the most complete still standing in Greater Manchester. Part of the factory is occupied by Leigh Spinners Ltd who have manufactured carpets since 1969 and since 2012, synthetic turf products for landscaping and sport.
The building is in poor condition and considered to be at risk by Historic England. A charity, the Leigh Building Preservation Trust was formed to restore the steam engine and engine house. In September 2013 the charity was awarded a £75,000 grant to restore the steam engine and repair the engine house by Waste Recycling Environmental Limited, a heritage fund that protects buildings of historical importance. The charity was able to turn the engine in 2018 for the first time in many years.
As at January 2019, the younger of the two mill buildings has had extensive roof repairs, allowing the Charity to advance the restoration of several floors. Sport England funding enabled the conversion of one floor to accommodate a Table Tennis Club,

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF77X - Buzzcocks are an English punk rock band formed in Bolton, England in 1976 by singer-songwriter-guitarist Pete Shelley and singer-songwriter Howard Devoto. They are regarded as a seminal influence on the Manchester music scene, the independent record label movement, punk rock, power pop, and pop punk. They achieved commercial success with singles that fused pop craftsmanship with rapid-fire punk energy. These singles were collected on Singles Going Steady, an acclaimed compilation album described by music journalist and critic, Ned Raggett, as a punk masterpiece.
Devoto and Shelley chose the name Buzzcocks after reading the headline, It's the Buzz, Cock!, in a review of the TV series Rock Follies in Time Out magazine. The buzz is the excitement of playing on stage
cock is northern English slang meaning friend. They thought it captured the excitement of the nascent punk scene, as well as having humorous sexual connotations following Pete Shelley's time working in a Bolton adult shop.
Devoto left the band in 1977, after which Pete Shelley became the principal singer-songwriter. After releasing three albums, as well as Singles Going Steady, the band broke up in 1981 following a dispute with their then-record label, but reunited in 1989, since releasing six more albums. Shelley died in 2018,[9] but the band has remained active. Steve Diggle, the guitarist and co-founder of the band, is now singer. They added a new guitarist Mani Perazzoli. They are still touring.
Their first UA Buzzcocks single, Orgasm Addict, was a playful examination of compulsive sexuality that was, and remains, uncommonly bold. The BBC refused to play the song, and the single did not sell well. Later, more ambiguous songs staked out a territory defined by Shelley's bisexuality and punk's aversion to serious examination of human sexuality. The next single, What Do I Get? reached the UK top 50 chart. Lipstick, the B-side to Promises, shared the same ascending progression of note

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JH06KJ - Initiated by The Pete Shelley Memorial Campaign, the new 200msq mural sits at the heart of the late punk rocker's hometown.
Huge new mural of punk rock singer and guitarist Pete Shelley has appeared in Leigh, Greater Manchester
Created in tribute to the late punk rock icon, it sits in the heart of the community where he was born and grew up and still has family today.
Based on the cover of The Buzzcocks' 1978 single Ever Fallen In Love and a portrait of Shelley, created by artist Chris Gabrin in the same year, it's been designed by artists Malcolm Garrett and Akse P19.
The latter is well known in the city for his photo-realistic portraits of pop culture icons, and his work is often seen popping up in prime locations across Manchester.
Situated close to Leigh Town Hall and the historic Turnpike Centre, the new mural is Akse's biggest yet sitting smack bang in the heart of Leigh. Initiated by The Pete Shelley Memorial Campaign, it has taken over three years of fundraising in order to complete the project.
At a whopping 200 meters squared, it's not an easy one to miss if you're in the area and has taken around a week to complete with the finishing touches, including a final coat of protective varnish, being applied by the street artist this afternoon.
Whilst the artwork has been unfolding over the past week, locals have had some fun trying to guess who it might be with Akse posting a range of updates to his social media showing the piece at various stages of completion
Pete was always incredibly proud of his northern roots, and we hope that the mural will help Pete's legacy live on and inspire more young artists and musicians to break down barriers and follow their dreams

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JH06TD - The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin (grid reference SD656003) is a Church of England parish church in Leigh, Greater Manchester, England. It is a member of the Salford & Leigh deanery in the archdeaconry of Salford, diocese of Manchester. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building.
Leigh was in the Diocese of Lichfield and Coventry until 1541 when it was transferred to the Diocese of Chester. In 1847 Leigh became the only parish in the Hundred of West Derby to be part of the new Diocese of Manchester. Leigh has had its own deanery since 1933. Before that it was part of the deanery of Eccles and prior to that Warrington.
History
St. Mary's is in the centre of Leigh by the Civic Square, which was originally the market place, next to the library and opposite the town hall. The church was mentioned in documents in the 13th century but the date of its foundation is uncertain. The first church on the site, dedicated to St Peter, was described as the Church of Westleigh in Leigh. Its dedication was changed to St Mary the Virgin at the end of the 14th century. The church straddled the ancient boundary between the townships of Westleigh and Pennington, the nave and churchyard in Westleigh and the chancel in Pennington

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JH070G - The Lilford Hotel in Bradshawgate was built in 1876 at a cost of 3,000 pounds. The Lilford Hotel originally included four cellars, nine ground floor rooms, 12 bedrooms, stabling and a coach house and could cater for 70 diners but only offered four beds and stabled six horses in 1890. Bed spaces were limited by the large billiards and reception rooms. It was also a popular venue with cyclists in Leigh including the Buffaloes cycling club. The original landlord was ejected in 1877 for licensing irregularities and paying 120 pounds rent per annum - five times the normal rents in those days, then in 1880 Joseph Jackson was landlord and in 1895 he built a brewery to the rear.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JH0714 - James Nelson Grundy (born 8 December 1978) is a British Conservative Party politician who has served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Leigh since 2019.
Early life
Grundy was born in Warrington, and raised on the family farm in Lowton, where he still resides. Grundy was also educated locally, having attended both Lowton St Mary's Primary School and Lowton High School.
Political career
Grundy was elected to represent the Lowton East ward on Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council as a councillor in the 2008 local elections. He was elected to Parliament at the 2019 general election, taking the seat from Labour's Jo Platt. This made Grundy the first ever Conservative MP to represent the Leigh constituency since its creation.
Grundy's general election campaign pledges included respecting Leigh's vote to leave the EU in 2016
fighting for vital local transport infrastructure, such as the completion of the Atherleigh Way Bypass, and the re-opening of Golborne and Kenyon Junction stations
and securing investment for Leigh's town centres.
In 2020, Grundy put forward two bids to the Government's Restoring Your Railway Ideas Fund, progressing his pledge to get Kenyon Junction and Golborne Station reopened, following their closure after the Beeching Report. The outcome of these bids was due to be announced in autumn 2020.

The average human menstrual cycle is 28 days although no link has been established with the night lighting and the Moon. In the code for international direct dial phone calls, +28 is unassigned, which is a little spooky.
In Jewish tradition there is a 28 year solar cycle in which the sun returns to its place in Creation every 28 solar years. This is commemorated in April every 28 years with the recitation of Birkat Hachama, the blessing of the sun. In neo-Nazi circles, twenty-eight indicates Blood and Honour (28 = BH - B - second letter of the alphabet and H - the eight letter).
