Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E9APAB - A close, editorial still life of a vintage E G Parriss wristwatch laid across an old town plan of Nuneaton, Warwickshire. The aged cream dial, Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds register and worn leather strap give the photograph a strong period feel, linking personal timekeeping with local history, family business, craftsmanship and the Midlands tradition of practical engineering. The map beneath shows the printed title Town Plan of Nuneaton and surrounding streets, turning the image into a compact visual story about place, memory and the skilled repair and making of watches and clocks before disposable consumer electronics. E G Parriss is a name connected with Nuneaton horology: the Science Museum Group records the Parriss rolling-ball free pendulum clock as made by E G Parriss in Nuneaton in the 1940s. Separate Parriss family jeweller history also describes a watchmaking line that began with Joseph Parriss in Rugby, with Ernest Parriss and Beatrice later opening a shop in Nuneaton before moving to Sheringham in 1947. This photograph is useful for searches around British watchmakers, local jewellers, antique watches, interwar or early twentieth century design, family firms, craft skills, horological heritage, collectable wristwatches, Warwickshire history, Nuneaton nostalgia, old maps, town planning, genealogy, local archives and the passing of time. The warm patina of the dial contrasts with the black and white printed map, making it suitable for editorial use around regional manufacturing, the survival of small specialist trades, vintage retail, repair culture, museum collections, family history research and the way everyday objects can anchor a story about a town. It could also illustrate articles on high street jewellers, inherited possessions, analogue technology, conservation, restoration, watch servicing, local studies, historic mapping and the value of named provincial makers outside London, Coventry and Birmingham.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E9ANFM - MV Syntan is pictured moored on Beverley Beck in East Yorkshire, a restored historic working barge now preserved by the Beverley Barge Preservation Society. The colourful vessel, with black hull, green upperworks, red trim, ropes, fenders and flag, sits beside the waterway with residential streets and waterside railings in the background, creating a clear documentary image of local canal, river and industrial heritage. The society states that Syntan was formerly operated by Richard Hodgson's Tannery, carrying hides and tanning materials from Hull docks to Beverley Beck, before those materials continued by road to the tannery at Flemingate. Its own history page says the barge was built in 1949 for Richard Hodgson Tanners and formed part of a fleet of 16 barges based on Beverley Beck. The restored vessel now acts as a museum, heritage centre and community resource, helping tell the story of Beverley's working waterways, leather industry and links with the River Hull and Humber network. This image has strong editorial value for features on Beverley history, East Yorkshire tourism, inland waterway preservation, Humber barges, post-war cargo transport, volunteer heritage charities, boat restoration, industrial archaeology, local museums and community-led conservation. It can also illustrate the decline of traditional working waterways, the survival of specialist craft, the former importance of tanneries to Beverley, and the way modest town waterways have been repurposed for heritage, leisure and local identity. The bright daylight, moored barge, calm water and everyday street setting make the photograph useful for travel guides, history articles, museum listings, Heritage Open Days coverage, educational publishing and stock features about preserved working boats. Syntan is more than a decorative canal boat: it is a tangible reminder of the practical cargo movements that once connected Hull docks, Beverley Beck, local factories and wider Yorkshire trade.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MM9A0R - The leather subculture denotes practices and styles of dress organized around sexual activities that involve leather garments, such as leather jackets, vests, boots, chaps, harnesses, or other items. Wearing leather garments is one way that participants in this culture self-consciously distinguish themselves from mainstream sexual cultures. Many people associate leather culture with BDSM (Bondage/Discipline, Dominance/Submission, Sado/Masochism, also called SM or S&M) practices and its many subcultures. But for others, wearing black leather clothing is an erotic fashion that expresses heightened masculinity or the appropriation of sexual power
love of motorcycles, motorcycle clubs and independence

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F89PTF - The Industrial Revolution changed Walsall from a village of 2,000 people in the 16th century to a town of over 86,000 in approximately 200 years. The town manufactured a wide range of products including saddles, chains, buckles and plated ware. Nearby, limestone quarrying provided the town with much prosperity.
Walsall is usually remembered as the centre of an extensive leatherworking industry, but in reality there was much more. It used to be known as ˜The town of a hundred trades', which included all kinds of metalworking, tube making, iron and brass founding, electrical engineering, car and motor scooter making, chain making, lock making, and much more.
Walsall became a wealthy Black Country town because of its many industries that flourished, thanks to the hard-working, and skilled labour force.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED35Y - The sporran (/ˈspɒrən/
Scottish Gaelic for purse), a traditional part of male Scottish Highland dress, is a pouch that performs the same function as pockets on the pocketless kilt. Made of leather or fur, the ornamentation of the sporran is chosen to complement the formality of dress worn with it. The sporran is worn on a leather strap or chain, conventionally positioned in front of the groin of the wearer.
Since the traditional kilt does not have pockets, the sporran serves as a wallet and container for any other necessary personal items. It is essentially a survival of the common European medieval belt-pouch, superseded elsewhere as clothing came to have pockets, but continuing in the Scottish Highlands because of the lack of these accessories in traditional dress. The sporran hangs below the belt buckle
and much effort is made to match their style and design. The kilt belt buckle can be very ornate, and contain similar motifs to the sporran cantle and the Sgian Dubh. Early sporrans would have been worn suspended from the belt on one or other of the hips, rather than hung from a separate strap in front of the wearer.
When driving a car, dancing, playing drums, or engaging in any activity where a heavy pouch might encumber the wearer, the sporran can be turned around the waist to let it hang on the hip in a more casual position

Anthony Frank 'Tony' Iommi (born 19 February 1948) is an English guitarist and songwriter, best known as the founding member of pioneering heavy metal band Black Sabbath, its sole continual member through multiple personnel changes. This track is from from his excellent 2000 solo album 'Iommi'. A 'Brummy' from Handsworth, he has a star on the Birmingham walk of fame.
This shot was taken on a Whitby goth weekend, when more than usual the streets are filled with characters a mix of goth, steampunk, new romantic and may other creative styles. I was there for afew hours with Freddie Bernard. The alley is named after Thomas Argument.
Arguments Yard on Church Street leading up to Whitby Abbey is a well known local feature, once owned by the Arguments. Unlike the name suggests it is not a place to meet for a quarrel! It is named after our relative Thomas Argument who built a cottage on Church Street with its back garden running down to the harbour. To raise some more income he built five more cottages in the garden area which he then rented out. In 1871
The census return shows the tenants for 1b were Esther Knaggs (49) Charwoman and her son John (17) a Jet Ornament Maker, hence the link with both family business interests. Although Arguments Yard does not have public access, many of the little alleyways are well worth exploring if ever you visit Whitby.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4945519383 - 'Hell Bent For Leather - 'Judas Priest' - Play this track here.
¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
One of Birmingham's best, Judas Priest often I feel get the raw end of the stick when compared in heavy metal terms to the likes of Led Zeppelin, Metalica &
Kiss. dating back to 1968, the band consist of founder vocalist Rob Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton, KK. Downing, and bassist Ian Hill. Drummers have come and gone over the years. They have sold over 35 million albums worldwide.
I saw them two nights running at the Manchester Apollo in 1980 or 1981, supported probably by Budgie or Magnum. On one of the nights Halford came on with his big motorbike on stage and it toppled over on to him. It didn't affect the show however, it was still a cracking gig.
Judas Priest are also known for being revolutionaries in heavy metal fashion. Rob Halford thus began incorporating a macho image of what today is known as hardcore metal/biker/S&
M style into his look as early as 1978 (to coincide with the release of their album Killing Machine), and the rest of the band followed. The look was apparently sourced from S&
M boutiques that Halford visited while on tour.
It became a mainstay in heavy metal
soon, several other bands, particularly of the NWOBHM and early black metal movements, began incorporating Halford's fashion into their look as well. This sparked a revival in metal in the early '80s, and catapulted them to fame, in both the mainstream and underground. Even in the present, it is not uncommon to find metal artists sporting such a look at concerts.
In 1998, Halford came out as gay publicly on an interview with MTV News.
------------------------
This shot was taken at the showery Manchester Pride 2010.
The first 'gay pride' event in Manchester was held in 1990. EuroPride was hosted in Manchester in 2003, and Since 2004 the title 'Manchester Pride' has been adopted. It is one of the longest running in the country and attracts thousands of visitors to the city's Gay Village, which centres around Canal Street, each year. The event comprises a Pride march, and several days of various arts, music and cultural events all over the city as well as a festival during the August bank holiday weekend within the gay village itself.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4772241526 - 'While editing this image of TonyD taken in Warrington I was listening to an ipod playlist of Curtis Mayfield and Isaac Hayes tracks from the blaxploitation years of the 70's.
Hayes was singer-songwriter, actor, and musician and one of the main creative forces behind southern soul music label Stax Records. There he served as both an in-house songwriter and producer with partner David Porter during the mid-1960s.
In the late 1960s, Hayes became a recording artist, and recorded successful soul albums such as Hot Buttered Soul (1969) and Black Moses (1971). He was also the Stax label's premier artist. In addition to his work in pop music, Hayes was a film score composer for motion pictures. His best known work, for the 1971 soul cinema classic film Shaft, earned Hayes an Academy Award for Best Original Song (the first Academy Award received by an African-American in a non-acting category) and two Grammy Awards. He received a third Grammy for the album Black Moses.
Super Fly is the third studio album by American soul and funk musician Curtis Mayfield, released in July 1972 on Curtom Records. It was released as the soundtrack for the blaxploitation film of the same name. Widely considered a classic of 1970s soul and funk music, Super Fly was a nearly immediate hit. Its sales were bolstered by two million-selling singles, 'Freddie's Dead' and the title track. Pusherman is the third killer track on the disk. Super Fly is one of the few soundtracks to out-gross the film it accompanied.
In 1997, Rhino Records released a 25th Anniversary collection of the Super Fly album with a bonus disc of demo versions of songs, radio spots and interviews.
Isaac Hayes died of a stroke in August 2008, aged nearly 66.
He will probably be best remembered when during the late 1990s, Hayes gained new popularity as the voice of Chef animated TV series South Park. Chef was a soul-singing cafeteria worker at the South Park kids' school. A song from the series performed by Chef, 'Chocolate Salty Balls (P.S. I Love You)', received international radio airplay in 1999. It reached number-one on the UK singles chart. The track also appeared on the album Chef Aid: The South Park Album in 1998.
He left the show however in a row about the South Park episode 'Trapped in the Closet'. This was a satire of Scientology which aired in Nov 2005. In a response the South Park authors stated
'He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin.'
The South Park season 10 premiere (aired March 22, 2006) featured 'The Return of Chef', a thinly veiled telling of the affair from Parker and Stone's point of view. Using sound clips from past episodes, it depicts Chef as having been brainwashed and urges viewers (via Kyle talking to the town) to 'remember Chef as the jolly old guy who always broke into song' and not to blame Chef for his defection, but rather, as Kyle stated, 'be mad at that fruity little club for scrambling his brains.'
During the spring of 2008 before his death, Hayes shot scenes for a comedy about soul musicians inspired by the history of Stax Records entitled Soul Men, in which he appears as himself in a supporting role. His voice can be heard in the film in a voice-over role as Samuel L. Jackson, Bernie Mac, and Sharon Leal's characters are traveling through Memphis.
Two months after his death, the South Park episode 'The China Probrem' was dedicated to him.

Roulette is a casino game named after a French diminutive for 'little wheel'. In the game, players may choose to place bets on either a single number or a range of numbers, the colors red or black, or whether the number is odd or even.
A legend tells François Blanc supposedly bargained with the devil to obtain the secrets of roulette. The legend is based on the fact that the sum of all the numbers on the roulette wheel (from 1 to 36) is 666, which is the 'Number of the Beast'.

I have memories of my old mum, coming home from catholic church on Sunday talking about that scruffy 'Tony Wilson' turning with 'dodgy shoes'. This was when he lived in Charlesworth with Lindsay Reade. In his youth he lived in affluent Marple, Stockport Cheshire.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3812249269 - 'A variety of leather balls for all types of sports in an antique shop window in Edinburgh, Scotland. Road out to Loanhead.
The red leather english cricket ball is where the eye is drawn to. Below it is a leather hand stitched Hearts (Heart of Midlothian) 1956 soccer football. Hearts is one of the two major city teams in the east of Scotland together with Hibs (Hibernian).
The leather Hearts ball celebrates the Heart of Midlothian 1956 team, who won the Scottish Cup by defeating Glasgow Celtic 3-1 at Hampden Park. In the same year they also finished League runners-up. This included Hearts legends Freedie Glidden (Captain), Alex Young, Conn, Bauld and Wardhaugh. Programmes from this year are a great find if rumminging around in the cities antique and curio shops.

09/12 - ¿te gusta?
It was the star tattoo on her arm that first caught his gaze, then the long blond hair. The station was quite empty for what was usually the busy evening rush hour from work.
'¿te gusta?”, she startled him after noticing him staring. “Disculpe, excuse me” he said in an embarrassed English accent. For someone usually very confident he could feel his face going red. It wasn’t the warm breeze blowing through Cordoba station this time either.
He missed his train that evening. And the next, and the next....
He realised he had reached one of life’s encrucijada’s. It felt good.
