Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RGJW6Y - A street-level view of The Auction Mart, a distinctive historic building in Godalming, Surrey, now occupied by Godalming Veterinary Surgery. The corner building features traditional brickwork, arched windows, and a prominent turret-style roof structure, giving it a recognisable presence within the town centre streetscape. Clear signage identifies both the historic building name and its current use as a veterinary practice.
Godalming is a historic market town in Surrey, known for its mix of period architecture and independent local services. The reuse of the Auction Mart as a veterinary surgery reflects the adaptive use of older town-centre buildings to support contemporary community needs, in this case providing animal healthcare and veterinary services for pets and local residents.
The photograph was taken in daylight, with leafy branches framing the upper part of the image, adding a seasonal, summery feel. The image is suitable for editorial and commercial uses illustrating UK veterinary services, local high-street businesses, historic buildings in modern use, and the character of English market towns.
Location: The Auction Mart, Godalming Veterinary Surgery, Godalming, Surrey, England (town-centre location
exact street number and postcode not visible on signage).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WE19 - This image shows a directional sign for the Thames Path in Maritime Greenwich, South East London. The sign points walkers along one of the UK's best-known long-distance footpaths, which follows the River Thames from its source in Gloucestershire to the Thames Barrier in East London.
Behind the sign, partially obscured by spring foliage, are the classical facades of the Old Royal Naval College, part of the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site. The combination of historic architecture, mature trees, and formal iron railings reflects the carefully planned riverside landscape that characterises this part of Greenwich.
The Thames Path is heavily used by walkers, joggers, commuters, and tourists, offering continuous public access along the river and connecting major London landmarks. Signage such as this plays an important role in wayfinding and promoting sustainable, car-free movement through the city.
Photographed in daylight under a clear blue sky with fresh green leaves on the trees, the image is well suited to editorial use covering London walking routes, urban green space, heritage landscapes, sustainable transport, outdoor leisure, and life along the River Thames.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J8C - A dramatic winter sunset fills the sky with vivid bands of pink, red and violet cloud, fading into cooler blue tones higher up. Bare, leafless tree branches stretch across the frame in dark silhouette, creating a natural lattice that both frames the view and emphasises the depth of the skyline beyond. The branching forms suggest deciduous woodland in the dormant season, with no leaves visible and fine twigs sharply outlined against the light.
The sky appears heavily textured with broken cloud, catching the last low-angle sunlight and turning it into a fiery, glowing canopy. The contrast between warm colour near the horizon and cooler tones above gives the scene a strong sense of late-day transition, typical of short winter afternoons when the sun drops quickly and the light changes by the minute. The atmosphere looks crisp and clear enough to hold strong colour, but with enough moisture in the air to illuminate the cloud layers, suggesting calm, cold conditions following a change in weather, or the edge of a clearing front.
The silhouetted tree line in the distance adds scale and place without needing a specific landmark, making the image useful as an atmospheric seasonal background as well as a natural landscape study. The composition reads as quiet and still, with the stark winter branches contrasting against the richness of the sky, capturing a fleeting moment of colour that visitors and walkers often notice most in the colder months, when the trees are stripped back and the sky becomes the main event.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KF6PBC - Holy Trinity Micklegate is a parish church of the Church of England, located on the west bank of the River Ouse inside the ancient walled city of York. The church building is a complex structure incorporating parts of the fabric of a medieval priory church dedicated to Holy Trinity and possibly an adjunct medieval parish church dedicated to St Nicholas (although this is disputed).
Holy Trinity was founded prior to the Norman invasion of 1066, and is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as one of five great northern churches (alongside, amongst others, York Minster).
In around 1089 this church was re-founded by its new Norman lord as a Benedictine priory, served by a community of monks. It may be at that date a 'double church' was constructed, with one half (Holy Trinity) providing a place of worship for the monastic community and a second (dedicated to St Nicholas) providing religious services to the lay community of the parish.
Holy Trinity Today
Its parish today includes the former parishes of two neighbouring churches, St John and St Martin in Micklegate, which are now redundant as places of worship and have been put to other uses. All four of these churches originated in the Middle Ages, and their buildings are all listed monuments. They share a rich and long history extending back nearly two millennia.
Indeed what we see in the landscape of surviving church buildings in Micklegate is only part of a formerly more extensive religious topography in this neighbourhood of York. All Saints North Street and St Mary Bishophill Junior survive as active churches with independent parishes. The churches of St Gregory in Micklegate, St Clement in Clementhorpe and two suburban chapels of St James and St Mary, together with suburban hospitals dedicated to St Katherine and St Thomas all disappeared shortly after the Reformation, while the redundant church of St Mary Bishophill Senior was demolished in the 1960s.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTWGJB - Sambucus is a genus of flowering plants in the family Adoxaceae. The various species are commonly referred to as elder, elderflower or elderberry. The genus was formerly placed in the honeysuckle family, Caprifoliaceae, but was reclassified as Adoxaceae due to genetic and morphological comparisons to plants in the genus Adoxa.
Flowers of European black elder
Description
The oppositely arranged leaves are pinnate with 5?9 leaflets (or, rarely, 3 or 11). Each leaf is 5?30 cm (2?12 in) long, and the leaflets have serrated margins. They bear large clusters of small white or cream-colored flowers in late spring
these are followed by clusters of small black, blue-black, or red berries (rarely yellow or white).
Color
Structure of anthocyanins, the blue pigments in elderberries
Sambucus fruit is rich in anthocyanidins[3] that combine to give elderberry juice an intense blue-purple coloration that turns reddish on dilution with water. These pigments are used as colorants in various products, and elderberry juice color is listed by the US FDA as allowable in certified organic food products. In Japan, elderberry juice is listed as an approved natural color additive under the Food and Sanitation Law. Fibers can be dyed with elderberry juice (using alum as a mordant) to give a muted purple shade.
Toxicity
Although the cooked berries (pulp and skin) of most species of Sambucus are edible, the uncooked berries and other parts of plants from this genus are poisonous. Leaves, twigs, branches, seeds, roots, flowers, and berries of Sambucus plants produce cyanogenic glycosides, which have toxic properties.[10] Ingesting a sufficient quantity of cyanogenic glycosides from berry juice, flower tea, or beverages made from fresh leaves, branches, and fruit has been shown to cause illness, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and weakness. In August 1983, a group of 25 people in Monterey County, California, became ill after ingesting elderberry juice pressed f

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTD3C7 - Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden is a historic walled garden in Grappenhall, Warrington, Cheshire, England. The garden was built by Thomas Parr around 1830 as both a pleasure garden for relaxing strolls and as a kitchen garden to produce fruit, vegetables, and herbs. After a period of decline, the garden was restored first by English Partnerships and then by the local parish council in conjunction with the friends of the garden
The walled garden was built around 1830 by Warrington banker Thomas Parr to accompany a mansion house. Thomas Parr's father, Joseph Parr, founded Parr's Bank and Thomas was appointed Chairman of the bank. Before opening the bank, Joseph Parr had made his wealth in the sugar refining industry that supported the slave trade in the British West Indies. Parr's bank amalgamated through acquisitions into the NatWest.
Unusually, Parr included both a pleasure garden and a kitchen garden within the same boundary wall. In addition to enjoying their garden, the Parr family held frequent galas and special events for the community. One annual event called Beating the Bounds involved a walk around the boundaries of the townships of Lymm, Appleton, and Grappenhall, which included the garden. Historical records suggest that the estate was at its height from 1875 to 1899.
By the 1950s, the estate had become derelict and parts of it were sold off. The house was demolished in the 1970s and the garden passed to English Partnerships for renovation. In 2005 control of the garden passed to Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council, which continued restoration in conjunction with a community group called The Friends of Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden. In 2012 the garden was given a Heritage Lottery Fund award towards repair of the Victorian glasshouses and completion of the restoration

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JYTBGB - Manchester Cathedral, formally the Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys and St George, in Manchester, England, is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Manchester, seat of the Bishop of Manchester and the city's parish church. It is on Victoria Street in Manchester city centre and is a grade I listed building.
The former parish church was rebuilt in the Perpendicular Gothic style in the years following the foundation of the collegiate body in 1421. Then at the end of the 15th century, James Stanley II (warden 1485?1506 and later Bishop of Ely 1506?1515) was responsible for rebuilding the nave and collegiate choir with high clerestory windows
also commissioning the late-medieval wooden internal furnishings, including the pulpitum, choir stalls and the nave roof supported by angels with gilded instruments. The collegiate church became the cathedral of the new Diocese of Manchester in 1847. It was extensively refaced, restored and extended in the Victorian period, and again following bomb damage during World War II. It is one of fifteen Grade I listed buildings in Manchester.
Manchester Arndale (one of a number of shopping centres in the UK by the same developers, also known simply as the Arndale Centre or the Arndale) is a large shopping centre in Manchester, England. It was constructed in phases between 1972 and 1979, at a cost of ?100 million. Manchester Arndale is the largest of the chain of Arndale Centres built across the UK in the 1960s and 1970s. It was redeveloped after the 1996 Manchester bombing.
Built in 1815 as the Old Church Tavern the Mitre Hotel clearly derives its name from its neighbour the Manchester Cathedral. The Mitre has survived two potentially disasterous bombings. The first was just before Christmas in 1940 when Manchester suffered its worst blitz of the Second World War.

The paifang, underneath which road traffic passes, was specially built in China and shipped over in three containers. Construction commenced over Christmas 1986 and was completed by Easter 1987, a year after the city of Manchester was twinned with Wuhan. The structure was a gift from Manchester City Council to the Chinese community, and is adorned with dragons and phoenixes.
After many years exposed to the elements, the arch required restoration work to be undertaken
netting was wrapped around a part of the structure to prevent further tiles from dislodging. The Manchester Chinatown Community Group undertook a series of charity events, including a dry land dragon boat race in June 2012. In early 2013 the archway was repaired by Manchester and Cheshire Construction Company. It is the only one in Europe and regarded as more decorative than the one in San Francisco. Designed and built by a team of engineers from Peking, it is decorated with ceramics, lacquer, paint and gold leaf.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A989YD - A fern is a member of a group of vascular plants (plants with xylem and phloem) that reproduce via spores and have neither seeds nor flowers. They differ from mosses by being vascular, i.e., having specialized tissues that conduct water and nutrients and in having life cycles in which the sporophyte is the dominant phase. Ferns have complex leaves called megaphylls, that are more complex than the microphylls of clubmosses. Most ferns are leptosporangiate ferns, sometimes referred to as true ferns. They produce coiled fiddleheads that uncoil and expand into fronds. The group includes about 10,560 known extant species.
Ferns are defined here in the broad sense, being all of the Polypodiopsida, comprising both the leptosporangiate (Polypodiidae) and eusporangiate ferns, the latter itself comprising ferns other than those denominated true ferns, including horsetails or scouring rushes, whisk ferns, marattioid ferns, and ophioglossoid ferns.
Ferns first appear in the fossil record about 360 million years ago in the late Devonian period, but many of the current families and species did not appear until roughly 145 million years ago in the early Cretaceous, after flowering plants came to dominate many environments. The fern Osmunda claytoniana is a paramount example of evolutionary stasis
paleontological evidence indicates it has remained unchanged, even at the level of fossilized nuclei and chromosomes, for at least 180 million years.
Ferns are not of major economic importance, but some are used for food, medicine, as biofertilizer, as ornamental plants and for remediating contaminated soil. They have been the subject of research for their ability to remove some chemical pollutants from the atmosphere. Some fern species, such as bracken (Pteridium aquilinum) and water fern (Azolla filiculoides) are significant weeds world wide. Some fern genera, such as Azolla can fix nitrogen and make a significant input to the nitrogen nutrition of rice paddies. They also play certa

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M475J9 - Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, officially known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King[2] and locally nicknamed Paddy's Wigwam, is the seat of the Archbishop of Liverpool and the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Liverpool in Liverpool, England. The Grade II* Metropolitan Cathedral is one of Liverpool's many listed buildings.
The cathedral's architect, Frederick Gibberd, was the winner of a worldwide design competition. Construction began in 1962 and was completed in 1967. Earlier designs for a cathedral were proposed in 1933 and 1953, but none were completed.
The competition to design the cathedral was held in 1959. The requirement was first, for a congregation of 3,000 (which was later reduced to 2,000) to be able to see the altar, in order that they could be more involved in the celebration of the Mass, and second, for the Lutyens crypt to be incorporated in the structure. Gibberd achieved these requirements by designing a circular building with the altar at its centre, and by transforming the roof of the crypt into an elevated platform, with the cathedral standing at one end. The construction contract was let to Taylor Woodrow
The cathedral is built in concrete with a Portland stone cladding and an aluminium covering to the roof. Its plan is circular, having a diameter of 195 feet (59 m), with 13 chapels around its perimeter. The shape of the cathedral is conical, and it is surmounted by a tower in the shape of a truncated cone. The building is supported by 16 boomerang-shaped concrete trusses which are held together by two ring beams, one at the bends of the trusses and the other at their tops. Flying buttresses are attached to the trusses, giving the cathedral its tent-like appearance. Rising from the upper ring beam is a lantern tower, containing windows of stained glass, and at its peak is a crown of pinnacles.
The entrance is at the top of a wide flight of steps leading up from Hope Street.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFK5MG - Grappenhall is mentioned in the Domesday Book with the name Gropenhale and with a valuation of five shillings.
St Wilfrid's Church has a carving of a cat on the west face of the tower. This is believed to be Lewis Carroll's inspiration for the grinning Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The church itself was first constructed in 1120, though was rebuilt 400 years later. The church was also, at a time, in the possession of the Boidelle (Boydell) family.
Along with the church, the centre of the village contains two pubs, the Parr Arms and the Ram's Head, and Grappenhall Hall Residential School (no longer a residential school) and St Wilfrid's Primary School. Bradshaw Community Primary School is located north of the village centre. The Bridgewater canal, unique as being the first with no locks required, flows through the village
Grappenhall is home to the 25th Warrington East (St Wilfred's) Scout Troop. There is also a cricket ground, which is the home of Grappenhall Cricket Club.Australian cricketer Steve Smith was signed for the club for five weeks in 2007, when he was 17

In New Zealand, it is also sometimes called wild parsnip, or wild rhubarb. It typically grows to heights of 2 to 5.5 m (6 ft 7 in to 18 ft 1 in). Superficially, it resembles common hogweed (Heracleum sphondylium), Heracleum sosnowskyi, or garden angelica (Angelica archangelica). It is phototoxic and considered to be a noxious weed in many jurisdictions. Giant hogweed is native to the Caucasus region and Central Asia. It was introduced to Britain as an ornamental plant in the 19th century, and it has also spread to many other parts of Europe, the United States, and Canada.
The sap of giant hogweed causes phytophotodermatitis in humans, resulting in blisters and long-lasting scars. These serious reactions are due to the furocoumarin derivatives in the leaves, roots, stems, flowers, and seeds of the plant.

This track reminds me of thick black vinyl LP's on the NEMS label, \u00a32.25 bargains at the Virgin Megastore on Manchester's Market Street, when I was still at school. Cracking albums anyway.
'Sweet Leaf' is a song by Black Sabbath from their 1971 album Master of Reality. The song, a hymn to recreational cannabis use. Apparently, it got its title from a packet of cigarettes bassist Geezer Butler bought in Dublin that claimed the tobacco was 'the sweet leaf.' ('Sweetleaf' is also an English name for stevia.) The song begins with a tape loop of guitarist Tony Iommi coughing.
I recently read the Ozzy Osbourne biography unintentionally by picking up a used book on holiday and I was instantly hooked. Could not put it down. Some of the Sabs albums have been out since.
Black Sabbath were an English rock band, formed in Aston, Birmingham UK in 1968 by Ozzy Osbourne (lead vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass guitar), and Bill Ward (drums). The band has since experienced multiple line-up changes, with Tony Iommi the only constant presence in the band through the years.
Despite an association with occult and horror themes, Black Sabbath also composed songs dealing with social instability, political corruption, the dangers of drug abuse and the often apocalyptic prophesies of the horrors of war. Mostly of course it was good headbanging stuff!
If this floats your boat, check out some of these other banging tracks, all to be found on the various Black Sabbath compilations out there:

Although they are as old as Auld Reekie herself, the current name dates from only just over 30 years ago.
They were renamed Playfair Steps by then Rt Hon Lord Provest, Kenneth W Borthwick on 21st April 1978. He held that post from 1977.
They were originally, The Mound Steps 1853/1972, then John Knox Way 1972/78 before Playfair steps 78 onwards. Thanks to Nicola for helping me with the history.
He was undoubtedly one of the greatest Scottish architects of the 19th century, designer of many of Edinburgh's neo-classical landmarks in the New Town.
Two of his finest works are the neo-classical buildings of the National Gallery of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy which are situated in the centre of Edinburgh, to the left of these steps. The Playfair Project completed in 2004 joined the two historic buildings with an underground link.
He was greatly inspired by a trip to Athens.
Playfair died in Edinburgh on 19 March 1857, and is buried in Edinburgh's Dean Cemetery, where he designed a number of monuments for others, including Lord Jeffrey.
This is an infrared shot taken with a 720nm adapted SLR. It is more convenient to use than using a Hoya R72 for IR. This spring day was heavy in infrared.
Hopefully this will be a distraction for everyone hooked today on the Kate (Catherine) Middleton and Prince William royal wedding at Westminster Abbey. In different times it might have taken place in Edinburgh and there may have been several monarchs, kings &
queens in what is now the UK. Just some food for thought. Enjoy your day if you are watching it on TV or just spending the morning buying some 3x2 at Homebase.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 5207618142 - 'A Forest - 'The Cure' - Play this track here.
\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
This is vague story about a man looking for a girl in a forest. He hears her calling for him, and as he chases her, he suddenly stops and realizes that he is lost and that the girl is not there. Its easy to feel like that in a dense area of woodland, easy to be disorientated, lose yourself.
Often its regarded as 'The Cure's sound and is one of the most memorable tracks. It was the bands first 12' single release from 1980. I must admit not to be an ardent Cure fan, but have some definite favourites.
At the Werchter Festival in Belgium, July 5, 1981 according to bootleg legend, a notorious 'Robert Palmer' version of the track was performed. Everything was late at the festival, and the crowd was mostly there to see artists that were at the time bigger than The Cure, like Dire Straits and Robert Palmer, of whom the latter happened to be the next on stage after The Cure.
After twelve songs, Palmer's roadies said that if The Cure didn't stop playing soon, they would pull the plug. They reached a compromise that they would play one song before they left, opting for 'A Forest', which they decided to play a lot longer than what was normal at the time (almost ten minutes).
Robert Smith added some lyrics improvised on the spot (including the words: 'Such a long end' repeated several times). When the band finally finished, bass player Simon Gallup yelled into the microphone: 'F**k Robert Palmer, and f**k rock 'n' roll!'. It is not possible on the bootleg to hear Robert Palmer's roadies throwing The Cure's gear off the back of the stage afterwards.
------------------------
Deciduous plants, including trees, shrubs and herbaceous perennials, are those that 'decide' to lose all of their leaves for part of the year. This process is called abscission. In some cases leaf loss coincides with winter - namely in temperate or polar climates. While in other areas of the world, including tropical, subtropical and arid regions of the world, plants lose their leaves during the dry season or during other seasons depending on variations in rainfall.

for the Azure Damselfly it is the other way around. The second segment of the thorax has a distinctive spot with a line below connecting to the third segment.
Another difference can be observed when inspecting the side of the thorax. The Common Blue Damselfly has only one small black stripe there, while all other blue damselflies have two.
During mating, the male clasps the female by her neck while she bends her body around to his reproductive organs ? this is called a mating wheel. The pair flies together over the water and eggs are laid within a suitable plant, just below the surface.
The eggs hatch and the larvae, called nymphs, live in the water and feed on small aquatic animals. Nymphs climb out of the water up a suitable stem to moult into damselflies.

The stems are broad and flat, 1?5 cm broad, 3?5 mm thick, usually with lobed edges. The flowers are large, 8?16 cm diameter, white to red, with numerous petals.
The fruit is edible, very similar to the pitaya fruit from the closely related genus Hylocereus, though not so large, being only 3?4 cm long.
Fruit of Epiphyllum anguliger
Epiphyllums are popular house plants, with numerous hybrids and cultivars. The broad-leaved epiphyllum (Epiphyllum oxypetalum) is particularly well-known. It bears large, strongly fragrant flowers, that bloom for a single night only.
Epiphyllum species are added to some versions of the hallucinogenic drink Ayahuasca.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMWP7 - The common spangle gall wasp is a tiny wasp, Neuropterus quercusbaccarum, that causes a growth, or 'gall', on the underside of oak leaves in early autumn. It is common and widespread, and a single leaf can host up to 100 galls, each containing a single larva. The galls fall to the ground and can be seen around oak trees during autumn. The larvae continue to develop through the winter, and emerge as adults in April.
How to identify
The common spangle gall wasp produces a brown, disc-shaped gall on the undersides of oak leaves. You are more likely to see the galls than the adult gall wasps or the grubs. However, there are several similar, disc-shaped galls that grow on oak trees.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PG60W3 - The Borough of Waverley is a local government district with borough status in Surrey, England. The borough's headquarters are in the town of Godalming
other notable settlements are the towns of Farnham and Haslemere and the large village of Cranleigh. At the 2021 Census, the population of the borough was 128,200.
Waverley borders the borough of Guildford to the north, the Mole Valley district to the east, the Horsham and Chichester districts of West Sussex to the south, and the East Hampshire and Hart districts and the borough of Rushmoor in Hampshire to the west and northwest. The borough is named after Waverley Abbey, near Farnham, the earliest Cistercian monastery in Britain. Blackheath Common, in the north of the borough, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Waverley is a Wealden borough, bounded to the north by the Hog's Back section of the North Downs and by the Greensand Ridge. It has the most green space in absolute terms in Surrey at 293.1 km2 (113 sq. mi.) according to the central government-compiled Generalised Land Use database of January 2005, approximately half of which is woodland.
Much of the west of the borough echoes former ownership by the abbey, such as Waverley Cricket Club and the Waverley Arms pubs in Farnham and elsewhere. Equally echoed are the tens of square miles held under Farnham holding of the Bishop of Winchester which took in the western parishes of Frensham and Churt as well as much of Farnham parish since the early 12th century when one such Bishop, Henry of Winchester and of Blois established Farnham Castle as the See's episcopal home but which is today the borough's main surviving castle and a museum to the period.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AAT2T2 - The City Chambers or Municipal Buildings in Glasgow, Scotland, has functioned as the headquarters of Glasgow City Council since 1996, and of preceding forms of municipal government in the city since 1889, located on the eastern side of the city's George Square. An eminent example of Victorian civic architecture, the building was constructed between 1882 and 1888 to a competition winning design by Scottish architect William Young. a native of Paisley.
Inaugurated in August 1888 by Queen Victoria, the first council meeting was held within the chambers in October 1889. The building originally had an area of 5,016 m2 (53,990 sq ft). In 1923, an extension to the east side of the building in John Street was opened and in 1984 Exchange House in George Street was completed, increasing the size of the City Chambers complex to some 14,000 m2
