Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EDKYN9 - Estate agent letting boards stand outside rented homes in Latchford, Warrington, creating a useful editorial image for stories about England's Renters' Rights Act, private renting, tenant protection and the changing rules for landlords and letting agents. The signs from Cowdel Clarke, Leaders, HLB and other local agents show properties being advertised, let or managed in a typical suburban street, making the photograph valuable for housing, property, local economy and consumer-rights coverage. The UK government says new private renting rules came into force on 1 May 2026 to give millions of renters stronger rights, better protections and more security in their homes. Official guidance explains that the reforms affect assured and assured shorthold tenancies in the private rented sector, while social housing tenants and lodgers are usually outside the main scope. The changes include the end of Section 21 no-fault evictions, a move away from fixed-term assured shorthold tenancies, stronger rules around rent increases, new obligations for landlords and wider enforcement powers. The image is commercially useful for coverage of rental affordability, landlord behaviour, letting agents, property management, eviction reform, housing supply, private rented sector regulation and local authority enforcement. It can also illustrate concerns from landlords and agents about compliance, costs, tribunals, possession processes and whether some smaller landlords may leave the market. The cluster of boards gives a strong visual shorthand for a rental market where homes are treated as investment assets as well as places to live. As a documentary stock image, it captures the street-level face of renting reform in England, linking national legislation with ordinary tenants, landlords, agents and neighbourhood homes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CPAX2W - Directional signage for the Trans Pennine Trail photographed in the Latchford area of south Warrington, Cheshire, England. The blue wayfinding signs indicate west and east routes along the long-distance trail and display symbols for both cyclists and pedestrians, highlighting the shared-use nature of the path. The Trans Pennine Trail is a major national route stretching coast to coast across northern England, designed to promote walking, cycling, and sustainable travel through a mix of urban, suburban, and rural landscapes.
In towns such as Warrington, the trail forms part of local active-travel infrastructure, connecting residential neighbourhoods with green corridors, waterways, employment areas, and nearby towns. The signage reflects consistent national trail branding and supports navigation for leisure users as well as commuters. The image illustrates broader themes of sustainable transport, public investment in cycling and walking infrastructure, and the integration of long-distance recreational routes into everyday urban environments across contemporary Britain.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNK8 - This image shows a large, colourful street art mural located near Warrington Youth Zone on Dallam Lane in Warrington town centre, Cheshire (postcode WA2 7NG). The mural features a collage-style illustration of local landmarks, youth culture references, music, sport, and creative themes, reflecting the identity and aspirations of young people in the town.
Public artworks of this type are commonly associated with youth engagement and regeneration projects, designed to improve the visual environment while giving voice to local stories and experiences. Positioned close to Warrington Youth Zone, the mural complements the organisation's role in supporting young people through creative, sporting, and social activities.
The artwork incorporates bright colours, stylised buildings, and symbolic imagery connected to Warrington's urban landscape, creating a visually striking backdrop within the town-centre streetscape. Such murals often serve both as cultural markers and as informal wayfinding features, helping to define emerging civic spaces.
Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited to editorial use covering street art, youth culture, community regeneration, public art, urban identity, and the role of creative projects in town-centre renewal across England

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTJYMB - Open letter on LTNs, from Leader of the Council, Cllr Russ Bowden
The creation of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods is supported, promoted and actively funded by the current government and they are something that we have given a lot of detailed thought to over recent years.
Since 2018, when we undertook one of the largest listening exercises we've ever done to help form the Central 6 Regeneration Masterplan, we have been considering ways to address a key issue that has been consistently raised to us there is too much traffic, going too quickly, along residential streets
Health benefits of walking and cycling are well-known and widely acknowledged. They include better physical and mental health, lower rates of cancer, heart disease and stroke, and, ultimately, less overall pressure on health services. In some areas of the UK, local NHS Trusts are in fact paying for LTNs to be installed, as they are such a powerful tool for improving public health. Improving health is a major challenge for us in Warrington
Broad consultation on the Central 6 Regeneration Masterplan saw concerns being raised from Westy,Orford & Latchford, including a petition - read more at https://www.warrington.gov.uk/news/low-traffic-neighbourhoods

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D8D633 - In the 1990s several surveys were undertaken at St Mary's church, highlighting areas of structural instability and poor maintenance. The congregation had also fallen to around 400. The bishop decided to merge the parish with that of St Augustine
that parish had been erected in 1929 to cater for new residential areas in Westy, but the church had been closed and demolished in 2005. A new church would be built to serve the new parish and old St Mary's would be demolished. However, the old church was listed in 2005, and its future remains unresolved.
The new church was built at Latchford, on a site on Knutsford Road equidistant between the two former parish churches. In June 2008 the first designs, by David Horne of Hulme Upright Manning, were displayed, and the comments of the community carefully considered in the final design and decoration of the church. The new church opened in 2010, and may be the first newly-built Catholic church to be dedicated to Blessed John Henry Newman - More at https://taking-stock.org.uk/building/blessed-john-henry-newman-latchford/

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AFFP2N - The Environment Agency (EA) is a non-departmental public body, established in 1995 and sponsored by the United Kingdom government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), with responsibilities relating to the protection and enhancement of the environment in England (and until 2013 also Wales).
Purpose
The Environment Agency's stated purpose is, to protect or enhance the environment, taken as a whole so as to promote the objective of achieving sustainable development (taken from the Environment Act 1995, section 4). Protection of the environment relates to threats such as flood and pollution. The vision of the Agency is of a rich, healthy and diverse environment for present and future generations.
Scope
The Environment Agency's remit covers almost the whole of England, about 13 million hectares of land, 22,000 miles (35,000 km) of river and 3,100 miles (5,000 km) of coastline seawards to the three-mile limit which includes 2 million hectares of coastal waters.[2] In a sharing arrangement with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), it also exercises some of its functions over parts of the catchments of the River Tweed and the Border Esk which are, for the most part, in Scotland. Similarly, in an arrangement with NRW, political and operational areas are not coterminus. NRW staff exercise responsibility for parts of the River Dee (Wales) in England and EA staff exercise operational responsibility for those parts of the River Severn catchment in Wales.
Structure
The Environment Agency employs around 11,200 staff. It is organised into eight directorates that report to the chief executive.
There are two policy and process directorates. One deals with Flood and Coastal Risk Management and the other with Environment and Business. These are backed up by the Evidence directorate. The fourth directorate is a single Operations delivery unit, responsible for national services, and line management of all the Regional and Area staff.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RMJ3AX - Warrington Town Football Club is an association football club based in Warrington, Cheshire. They were established in 1949 under the name of Stockton Heath Albion, adopting their current name in 1961.
Formed in 1949 by Jimmy Drinkwater, the club was initially named Stockton Heath Albion and competed in the Warrington and District League until 1953, when they moved to the Mid Cheshire League. Freddie Worrall became manager at the same time, and during a 13-year spell in charge, the club won the league in 195960 plus the League Cup in three consecutive seasons during the 1950s. During his thirteen years at the helm, Heath were one of the most feared sides in Cheshire football, winning a string of honours including the Mid Cheshire League Championship in 195960, the League Cup in 195354, 195455, 195556 and made several appearances in the Cheshire Amateur Cup Final. Several players from this successful period went on to join Football League clubs, including Ian Weir, John Green, Alan Foster and Roger Hunt, later a World Cup winner with England in 1966.
At the club's 1961 AGM, it was decided to change the name to Warrington Town. In 1978 the club were founder members of Division Two of the Cheshire County League. When it merged into the North West Counties Football League in 1982, the club were founder members of Division Three. They finished as runners-up in the first season, earning promotion to Division Two. In 198586 Warrington reached the semi-finals of the FA Vase, losing 63 to Halesowen Town in a replay. After finishing as runners-up in Division Two in 198687, the club were promoted to Division One. In the same season they reached the FA Vase final, where they lost 32 to local rivals St Helens Town
In 198990 Warrington Town won Division One, and were promoted to the Northern Premier League. In 199293 they reached the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy, eventually losing 21 at Sutton United, and also became the first Division One club to reach the final

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PC2GNK - Warrington has a widespread network of cycle routes with new routes being added all the time. Improvements are also being made to our roads to make them safer and easier for cyclists to use.
Our cycle map has been updated for 2017 and now includes a plan of all the signed routes around town to help you plan your journeys.
Because Warrington is relatively flat and compact, most places are within easy cycling distance to each other.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HH1T51 - It sounds so simple and so trendy. The Eat-Clean Diet is a lifestyle way of eating that allows you to eat more, weigh less, and become the healthiest you can be, says Tosca Reno, author of The Eat-Clean Diet series.
Not only will you lose about 3 pounds a week, you will see dramatic changes in the way you look and feel, Reno says.
Reno says that eating clean encourages a lifestyle approach of exercise and a diet plan of unprocessed, whole foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and no artificial ingredients, preservatives, chemically charged foods, sugars, saturated fat, and trans fat.
That means tomatoes are in, ketchup is out. We live in a chemical soup experiment. Processed foods have undermined our health, especially sugars, which are deadly anti-foods that have no place in our body, Reno says.
Plans range from 1,200-1,800 calories, eaten in 5-6 small meals throughout the day -- designed to fire up the metabolism. Practicing portion control helps dieters avoid the dreaded calorie counting.
The Eat-Clean Diet is a beautiful book with lots of pictures of delicious-sounding recipes with nutrition information, glossy pictures, sample meal plans, grocery lists, and more to help dieters get excited about eating a healthy diet and engaging in more physical activity.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EC2T2J - Arpley Junction is adjacent to Warrington Bank Quay Station, but is located on the goods line that passes beneath. The line used to continue to Manchester but due to structural damage on a bridge over the Ship Canal, it was truncated at Latchford Sidings in the 1980s, just past Arpley Junction to the east.
The main freight passing beneath Warrington station are coal trains to Fiddlers Ferry Power Station. These follow a complex route from Liverpool Docks. Most workings reverse at Edge Hill, before proceeding via Rainhill and Earlestown and through Bank Quay station. They then run round in Arpley Yards, before passing Arpley Junction to Latchford Sidings. They then run round again to pass Arpley once more to head to Fiddlers Ferry. Occasionally they can be routed via Widnes to Liverpool instead of via the reverse of the above route, which will entail them exiting Fiddlers Ferry, passing Arpley Junction to Latchford, running round and heading back past Arpley and Fiddlers Ferry to Speke. Generally a train will take 30-40 minutes between passing through Bank Quay on the main line to heading under the station to Fiddlers Ferry. They will take about 90-120 minutes then to return. There are usually about 3 trains operating this circuit, but are dependant on a ship arriving at Liverpool Bulk Terminal.
Other freight trains also use Latchford Sidings to reverse when Arpley Yard is busy.

Eight, A number is divisible by 8 if its last 3 digits are also divisible by 8.
Eight is the first number to be the aliquot sum of two numbers other than itself
the discrete biprime 10, and the square number 49.
8 is the base of the octal number system, which is mostly used with computers. In octal, one digit represents 3 bits. In modern computers, a byte is a grouping of eight bits, also called an octet.
The number 8 is a Fibonacci number, being 3 plus 5. The next Fibonacci number is 13. 8 is the only positive Fibonacci number, aside from 1, that is a perfect cube.
The number eight is considered to be a lucky number in Chinese and other Asian cultures. Hanukkah is a Jewish festival holiday that lasts eight days and eight nights. In Islam, It is the number of Angels carrying The Holy Throne of Allah in heavens. In Hinduism, it is the number of wealth, abundance. The Goddess Lakshmi has eight forms. There are eight nidhi, or seats of wealth. There are also eight Guardians of the directions.
It is the atomic number of oxygen, as well as the number of tentacles on an octopus.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4545016881 - 'Khan, my friendly local traditional newsagent and tobaconist. He is quite a walk away just over the swing bridge in Latchford village and I sometimes see him on the only day that I occasionally buy a paper, Saturday. It\u2019s usually one with lots of supplements I buy with a bit of a TV and events review guide in it.
Thinking back over ten years or more I used to have three paper shops within 10 minutes walk
two on Knutsford road and Old cantankerous Malcolm Sissins in Lindi Avenue. In fact on originally looking for a house in the area I encountered 'Sissons' on the parade of shops that included a tiny sub-post office, hair salon (Flair, which is currently on the market www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-27655238.h... and small part time doctors surgery.
I walked into his newsagents which was full of untidy piles of paper and often out of date confectionary and he sold me a chocolate bar. On asking where I might buy a sandwich round here, he suggested 'shop next door'. On walking out and into the next door along, Malcolm appeared at the counter and said 'Hello, how can I help?'. A bit surreal to say the least.
Malcolm did have a big toy grotto and fishing supplies section at the back which customers were only allowed to visit on an escorted basis. After moving into Lindi Avenue myself and having regular papers from the shop did I learn some of the eccentricities. As Malcolm got even older he would only open half the shop at once, forcing customers to leave and re-enter by the street, although there was a passage between. School children (of which there could be many from the local primary) would be admitted one at a time. Late payment for delivered papers would incur an instant fine, while his reputation as being a difficult boss made it difficult to get and keep decent paper boys and girls. His biggest crime (noticed by Colin a yorkshireman, a good friend who shamefully I have not seen for yonks since he moved up near Durham) was when buying his boiled sweets loose from jars, Malcolm actually weighed the paper bag too!
Sadly, cantankerous though he was, he is now just a memory as an estimated ten UK local newsagents go under each week. Suburban supermarkets and coffee shops (Starbucks even selling daily papers now in some places) are picking away at their trade. Khan now has a Co-Op over the road, now selling papers too. In a daily Telegraph article, Starbucks denied it had any part to play in the decline in newsagents. A spokesman said: \u201cWe\u2019re wholly committed to enhancing each of our customers\u2019 unique Starbucks experiences and the availability of a daily national newspaper adds to that overall experience.\u201d
Although I might use the ATM cash machine in the co-op, I always get my paper at Khan's. That\u2019s where I have my 'Newspaper shop Experience'.
Oh and if you have any tales or experiences from the Sisson era, please leave a comment

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4475858832 - 'The Cantilever Ship Canal bridge (rightly called the Latchford High Level Bridge) B5157 connects Fairfield and Station Road in south Warrington. The latter was the location of Latchford station (Cheshire Lines), then Cantilever garden centre and now Cantilever Mansions, a collection of modern flats.
Here, the wet iron girders on the bridge is picking tp the low setting sun, in a nice golden yellow.
The bridge can remain in situ for all but the tallest ships and generally is used as a rat run when other hydraulic powered road bridges are opened.
In the area are Cantiliver Park (home to Warrington Town football club, eclipsed by the mighty Wires Rugby club) and the excellent Canteliver chippy (who will do Pea-wet if asked nicely).
The book 'History of the Manchester Ship Canal from Its Inception to Its Completion' records it as having a weight in steel of 783 tons. Also its centre span is recorded as 206 feet. In contrast the swing bridges at Knutsford and Northwich roads is only 120 feet.
Below the bridge was the old Beers timber yard. This is now being dissasembled.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4339376202 - 'Maybe a mantra for our current troubled times?
Perhaps we should worry about our carbon footprint, walk a bit more rather than drive as much? Possibly eat less supermarket food, consume in season and cut down on our food air miles ? Think more about our neighbours, come to think of it, do you even know your neighbours? Some of our prejudges should maybe be put aside, the world\u2019s more interesting when it\u2019s diverse.
I must have passed this on Orford road coming into Padgate, Warrington Cheshire a few dozen times. To stop at the traffic lights makes you consider these four words a little more deeply. Next time you wait there to follow the A50 or to go to Birchwood following the A574, consider these words.
If you have had any thoughts when passing this, please leave a comment.

Latchford is a suburban district and electoral ward of the unitary borough of Warrington, in Cheshire, England. It is around one mile south-east of Warrington town centre and has a total resident population of 7,856.
Latchford is a predominantly residential area, Latchford lies between the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal, and broadly consists of 19th century terraced housing and some open space. The canal is crossed here by a swing bridge, a high level road bridge and the now disused Latchford railway viaduct.
Its name came from Anglo-Saxon Læccford = Boggy-stream ford.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RDATXE - Latchford was chosen as the location of intermediate locks on the Manchester Ship Canal. These comprise a larger lock for ocean-going vessels and a smaller lock to its south for coasters, tugs and barges. A ship mooring area was provided on the canal's south bank and enabled two large vessels to pass each other at this point. The locks are still used, but less often than before, as hardly any ships now go to the terminal docks at Manchester and Salford.
