And it is these bridges that make this canal both unique and ground breaking.
The Cantilever itself weighs about 783 tonnes and the 206ft span carries the roadway 75 feet above the water level.
It was designed to provide a constant route to Latchford Train Station free from the interference and traffic stoppages associated with the turning of the nearby swing bridges.
The 36-mile canal opened on May 21, 1894, in a bid to divert trade from Liverpool docks into the centre of Manchester.
Dubbed The Big Ditch', more than 54million cubic yards of material were excavated for the canal, including 12million cubic yards of sandstone rock.
Terraced houses were set up nearby for workers, the likes of which can be seen on the estates off Knutsford Road in Latchford.
Meanwhile, bigwigs of the Manchester Ship Canal Company set up home in grand villas, most of which still exist in lower Grappenhall and Stockton Heath.
Work was twice delayed by water flooding into sections of the excavation, in November 1890 and December 1891.
However, the canal was finally completely filled with water in November 1893.
It opened to its first traffic on January 1, 1894. Today it is still a seaway for 1,500 ships annually carrying 6.5million tonnes of cargo.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDJ4J2 - The parish of Christ Church started with the building of an infant's school when the population of Latchford grew large enough to warrant such a school. This building still exists and it is now known as Wash Lane Schoolroom. However, after the death of Thomas Greenall, and following his wishes, his family decided to build a small sandstone church of Gothic design. The church consisted of a nave and chancel with an ornamental spire and its first priest was the Reverend Richard Greenall. On Tuesday, 16th July 1861 the Bishop of Chester, the Right Rev. Dr. John Graham, consecrated the church under the name of Christ Church. One can still find a brass plate in the chancel of the church commemorating the event: ? To the glory of God, and in affectionate memory of the late Thomas Greenall of Wilderspool and Grappenhall this church was erected Anno Domini 1861.
Christ Church was originally a chapel of ease to the mother church of St. Wilfrid at Grappenhall and was made a parish by Order of Council on 12th March 1866 with a population of 1,031 people. The parish priest at that time was the Reverend W.R. Burgess. The Vicarage was built in 1867 on land adjoining the church bought by Thomas Greenall's sons.
In 1875-76 a gallery at the west end of the nave was removed along with the organ. A transept, organ chamber and a vestry were added on the north side of the church. An organ which originally belonged to St. Wilfrid's church was installed as well as the west tracery window and a sedilia was placed in the
Sanctuary. Stained glass windows were placed at the south side of the chancel and at the southwest end of the nave. At the beginning of September 1882 an alabaster reredos and chancel arch were added.

The 17 September 2012 episode of BBC consumer affairs television programme Watchdog included a report on animal and fish welfare conditions at Pets at Home. The programme had visited eight stores, as part of an investigation which included Mike Jessop, former president of the Small Animal Veterinary Association. The programme discovered evidence of mistreatment of small animals, dead fish being left to rot and be eaten in tanks, and sick small animals up for sale. That month, Pets at Home issued a full response to the claims made in the broadcast. The BBC trust published a clarification on 7 June 2016 that the website included a version of the item made before Pets at Home's points in reply to criticisms were incorporated. In response to the complaint the programme-makers acknowledged that this represented a serious breach of the BBC's editorial standards and replaced the item with a version which reflected Pets at Home's points.
In March 2014, the company was the subject of an initial public offering.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2J92PEH - On his removal to Grappenhall in 1855, Thomas Leah an Independent Methodist Lay Preacher and a few fellow believers felt led to begin a new Church. Leah who had been converted to the Christian faith at a Camp Meeting at Cherry Lane, Lymm, in 1828, started the Church in a room above a bake house on Knutsford Road. The bake house stood behind what is today a modern detached house which is the third property from the junction of Knutsford and Chester Roads.
For 26 years the small fellowship went from strength to strength. By 1880 it became clear that the room above the bake house was no longer large enough. The Church Leaders decided to buy a plot of land on Chester Road and to erect a new Church for the expanding congregation. After some local opposition the Church was opened in 1881. The building today is part of a private residence between Euclid Avenue and Clarence Road.
Despite the Independent Methodists in Grappenhall having a new church building the congregation began a period of decline. The situation was reported to the Warrington Circuit of Independent Methodist Churches who appointed Robert Henshall and Arthur Jolley to endeavour to revive and resuscitate the Christian Cause at Grappenhall
Church Leaders decided to look for a new plot of land on which to build a larger building. Land in the Cross Lane area of Grappenhall was sought. After much negotiation land was bought on the corner of Knutsford Road and Knutsford Old Road. The new Church building opened in 1913 was located just outside the Parish of Grappenhall in what was then known as 'Latchford Without' and today is part of Stockton Heath Parish.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D8D633 - In the 1990s several surveys were undertaken at St Mary's church, highlighting areas of structural instability and poor maintenance. The congregation had also fallen to around 400. The bishop decided to merge the parish with that of St Augustine
that parish had been erected in 1929 to cater for new residential areas in Westy, but the church had been closed and demolished in 2005. A new church would be built to serve the new parish and old St Mary's would be demolished. However, the old church was listed in 2005, and its future remains unresolved.
The new church was built at Latchford, on a site on Knutsford Road equidistant between the two former parish churches. In June 2008 the first designs, by David Horne of Hulme Upright Manning, were displayed, and the comments of the community carefully considered in the final design and decoration of the church. Latchford viaduct was opened on 8 July 1893 to carry the London and North Western Railway's Stockport to Warrington line over the Manchester Ship Canal. The wrought iron viaduct, with a span of 250 feet (76 m), weighed more than 1,200 tonnes. The last passengers service ran in 1962, but the line continued to carry freight. It finally closed to all traffic in July 1985, when it was deemed too expensive to make extensive repairs to keep Latchford viaduct operational.

Purpose
The Environment Agency's stated purpose is, to protect or enhance the environment, taken as a whole so as to promote the objective of achieving sustainable development (taken from the Environment Act 1995, section 4). Protection of the environment relates to threats such as flood and pollution. The vision of the Agency is of a rich, healthy and diverse environment for present and future generations.
Scope
The Environment Agency's remit covers almost the whole of England, about 13 million hectares of land, 22,000 miles (35,000 km) of river and 3,100 miles (5,000 km) of coastline seawards to the three-mile limit which includes 2 million hectares of coastal waters.[2] In a sharing arrangement with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), it also exercises some of its functions over parts of the catchments of the River Tweed and the Border Esk which are, for the most part, in Scotland. Similarly, in an arrangement with NRW, political and operational areas are not coterminus. NRW staff exercise responsibility for parts of the River Dee (Wales) in England and EA staff exercise operational responsibility for those parts of the River Severn catchment in Wales.
Structure
The Environment Agency employs around 11,200 staff. It is organised into eight directorates that report to the chief executive.
There are two policy and process directorates. One deals with Flood and Coastal Risk Management and the other with Environment and Business. These are backed up by the Evidence directorate. The fourth directorate is a single Operations delivery unit, responsible for national services, and line management of all the Regional and Area staff.

The line used to continue to Manchester but due to structural damage on a bridge over the Ship Canal, it was truncated at Latchford Sidings in the 1980s, just past Arpley Junction to the east.
The main freight passing beneath Warrington station are coal trains to Fiddlers Ferry Power Station. These follow a complex route from Liverpool Docks. Most workings reverse at Edge Hill, before proceeding via Rainhill and Earlestown and through Bank Quay station. They then run round in Arpley Yards, before passing Arpley Junction to Latchford Sidings. They then run round again to pass Arpley once more to head to Fiddlers Ferry. Occasionally they can be routed via Widnes to Liverpool instead of via the reverse of the above route, which will entail them exiting Fiddlers Ferry, passing Arpley Junction to Latchford, running round and heading back past Arpley and Fiddlers Ferry to Speke. Generally a train will take 30-40 minutes between passing through Bank Quay on the main line to heading under the station to Fiddlers Ferry. They will take about 90-120 minutes then to return. There are usually about 3 trains operating this circuit, but are dependant on a ship arriving at Liverpool Bulk Terminal.
Other freight trains also use Latchford Sidings to reverse when Arpley Yard is busy.

With all the main parties hiding the details on what will be cut to tackle the current deficit, it is unlikely whoever gets in, there will be much left over for essential stuff like this. Most people realise it is charities, university research labs and big pharma who actuallly find these drugs, not central government. Maybe in the big Tory idea of 'everyone doing it for themselves', we should all be looking for these drugs ourselves? I read one satirical piece that suggested in this mode if we could not find a satisfactory hospital consultant the inferrence was that we should get a mirror and our own scalpal &
have a go.
It will be interesting to see what the reality is when the votes are counted and the job of dealing with that deficit starts. That could be like the colour shift in this image, a different kind of drug, a bad acid trip!

He is quite a walk away just over the swing bridge in Latchford village and I sometimes see him on the only day that I occasionally buy a paper, Saturday. It\u2019s usually one with lots of supplements I buy with a bit of a TV and events review guide in it.
Thinking back over ten years or more I used to have three paper shops within 10 minutes walk
two on Knutsford road and Old cantankerous Malcolm Sissins in Lindi Avenue. In fact on originally looking for a house in the area I encountered 'Sissons' on the parade of shops that included a tiny sub-post office, hair salon (Flair, which is currently on the market www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-27655238.h... and small part time doctors surgery.
I walked into his newsagents which was full of untidy piles of paper and often out of date confectionary and he sold me a chocolate bar. On asking where I might buy a sandwich round here, he suggested 'shop next door'. On walking out and into the next door along, Malcolm appeared at the counter and said 'Hello, how can I help?'. A bit surreal to say the least.
Malcolm did have a big toy grotto and fishing supplies section at the back which customers were only allowed to visit on an escorted basis. After moving into Lindi Avenue myself and having regular papers from the shop did I learn some of the eccentricities. As Malcolm got even older he would only open half the shop at once, forcing customers to leave and re-enter by the street, although there was a passage between. School children (of which there could be many from the local primary) would be admitted one at a time. Late payment for delivered papers would incur an instant fine, while his reputation as being a difficult boss made it difficult to get and keep decent paper boys and girls. His biggest crime (noticed by Colin a yorkshireman, a good friend who shamefully I have not seen for yonks since he moved up near Durham) was when buying his boiled sweets loose from jars, Malcolm actually weighed the paper bag too!
Sadly, cantankerous though he was, he is now just a memory as an estimated ten UK local newsagents go under each week. Suburban supermarkets and coffee shops (Starbucks even selling daily papers now in some places) are picking away at their trade. Khan now has a Co-Op over the road, now selling papers too. In a daily Telegraph article, Starbucks denied it had any part to play in the decline in newsagents. A spokesman said: \u201cWe\u2019re wholly committed to enhancing each of our customers\u2019 unique Starbucks experiences and the availability of a daily national newspaper adds to that overall experience.\u201d
Although I might use the ATM cash machine in the co-op, I always get my paper at Khan's. That\u2019s where I have my 'Newspaper shop Experience'.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4475858832 - 'The Cantilever Ship Canal bridge (rightly called the Latchford High Level Bridge) B5157 connects Fairfield and Station Road in south Warrington. The latter was the location of Latchford station (Cheshire Lines), then Cantilever garden centre and now Cantilever Mansions, a collection of modern flats.
Here, the wet iron girders on the bridge is picking tp the low setting sun, in a nice golden yellow.
The bridge can remain in situ for all but the tallest ships and generally is used as a rat run when other hydraulic powered road bridges are opened.
In the area are Cantiliver Park (home to Warrington Town football club, eclipsed by the mighty Wires Rugby club) and the excellent Canteliver chippy (who will do Pea-wet if asked nicely).
The book 'History of the Manchester Ship Canal from Its Inception to Its Completion' records it as having a weight in steel of 783 tons. Also its centre span is recorded as 206 feet. In contrast the swing bridges at Knutsford and Northwich roads is only 120 feet.
Below the bridge was the old Beers timber yard. This is now being dissasembled.

Think more about our neighbours, come to think of it, do you even know your neighbours? Some of our prejudges should maybe be put aside, the world\u2019s more interesting when it\u2019s diverse.
I must have passed this on Orford road coming into Padgate, Warrington Cheshire a few dozen times. To stop at the traffic lights makes you consider these four words a little more deeply. Next time you wait there to follow the A50 or to go to Birchwood following the A574, consider these words.

A dark, slightly decaying underused and slightly disturbing place to hang about at night.

A number of cars and pedestrians were piling up, hence the two lads on the front of the boat waving.
The happy falcon is a frequent visitor to Carrington and is a LPG Tanker. For anyone interested it is IMO no 9227261 Flag IOM. It was Built 2002 and is 3366gt.
As can be seen its got a great red coloured hull and the boat can be easily seen from some distance away.

Latchford is a suburban district and electoral ward of the unitary borough of Warrington, in Cheshire, England. It is around one mile south-east of Warrington town centre and has a total resident population of 7,856.
Latchford is a predominantly residential area, Latchford lies between the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal, and broadly consists of 19th century terraced housing and some open space. The canal is crossed here by a swing bridge, a high level road bridge and the now disused Latchford railway viaduct.
Its name came from Anglo-Saxon L??ccford = Boggy-stream ford.

These comprise a larger lock for ocean-going vessels and a smaller lock to its south for coasters, tugs and barges. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RMJ3AW - Warrington Town Football Club is an association football club based in Warrington, Cheshire. They were established in 1949 under the name of Stockton Heath Albion, adopting their current name in 1961.
Formed in 1949 by Jimmy Drinkwater, the club was initially named Stockton Heath Albion and competed in the Warrington and District League until 1953, when they moved to the Mid Cheshire League. Freddie Worrall became manager at the same time, and during a 13-year spell in charge, the club won the league in 1959?60 plus the League Cup in three consecutive seasons during the 1950s. During his thirteen years at the helm, Heath were one of the most feared sides in Cheshire football, winning a string of honours including the Mid Cheshire League Championship in 1959?60, the League Cup in 1953?54, 1954?55, 1955?56 and made several appearances in the Cheshire Amateur Cup Final. Several players from this successful period went on to join Football League clubs, including Ian Weir, John Green, Alan Foster and Roger Hunt, later a World Cup winner with England in 1966.
At the club's 1961 AGM, it was decided to change the name to Warrington Town. In 1978 the club were founder members of Division Two of the Cheshire County League. When it merged into the North West Counties Football League in 1982, the club were founder members of Division Three. They finished as runners-up in the first season, earning promotion to Division Two. In 1985?86 Warrington reached the semi-finals of the FA Vase, losing 6?3 to Halesowen Town in a replay. After finishing as runners-up in Division Two in 1986?87, the club were promoted to Division One. In the same season they reached the FA Vase final, where they lost 3?2 to local rivals St Helens Town
In 1989?90 Warrington Town won Division One, and were promoted to the Northern Premier League.In 1992?93 they reached the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy, eventually losing 2?1 at Sutton United, and also became the first Division One club to reach the final
