Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PP6R - This image shows a blue fabric banner displayed inside St Mary's Priory and Parish Church in Lancaster. The banner bears the words St Mary Lancaster and prominently features the Red Rose of Lancashire, the historic county emblem that has long symbolised Lancashire's identity and heritage.
Church banners such as this combine religious tradition with local and regional symbolism, reinforcing the close relationship between parish life and place. The inclusion of the Lancashire rose reflects the church's role not only as a centre of worship but also as a focal point for civic and county identity within Lancaster.
St Mary's Priory, located close to Lancaster Castle, has medieval origins and remains an active Anglican parish church. Its interior contains a variety of historic and contemporary furnishings that reflect centuries of religious practice and community continuity.
Photographed indoors against stone columns and lit church architecture, the image provides a documentary record of Anglican material culture and local symbolism. It is well suited for editorial use covering English parish churches, religious heritage, Lancashire identity, ecclesiastical textiles, and the intersection of faith and regional history.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PP73 - This image shows a Mothers' Union banner displayed within St Mary's Priory and Parish Church in Lancaster. The embroidered textile features a depiction of the Virgin Mary in blue robes, accompanied by Christian symbols and decorative motifs, with the words St Mary's Priory and Parish Church and Lancaster MU clearly visible.
The Mothers' Union is an international Anglican organisation founded in the nineteenth century, focused on supporting families, marriage, and community life within a Christian framework. Local branches, such as the Lancaster Mothers' Union, are typically represented within churches by banners used during services, processions, and special occasions.
Church banners of this kind form part of the material culture of Anglican worship, combining religious symbolism, craft, and local identity. The use of fabric, embroidery, and iconography reflects traditions of devotional art that are intended to be both visually expressive and spiritually meaningful.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64RTD - This image shows the classic British Rail double arrow station sign for Lancaster railway station, photographed against a clear blue sky with surrounding trees. The sign identifies Lancaster as a key stop on the West Coast Main Line, one of the UK's most important intercity rail corridors linking London with the North West of England and Scotland.
Lancaster station is served by Avanti West Coast long-distance services, providing direct connections to London Euston, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. In addition, the station is an important regional hub for Northern Trains and TransPennine Express, offering onward connections across Lancashire, Cumbria, Yorkshire, and the wider North of England.
The continued use of the British Rail double arrow symbol reflects the enduring visual identity of the UK rail network, even decades after rail privatisation. Station signage of this type remains instantly recognisable and is widely used to represent rail travel, connectivity, and public transport in Britain.
Photographed in daylight, the image works well as editorial material illustrating UK railway infrastructure, regional and intercity rail services, transport policy, sustainable travel, and the role of provincial cities like Lancaster within the national rail network.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64T7M - This photograph shows the exterior of Ye Olde John O'Gaunt, a long-established public house located at 53 Market Street in Lancaster city centre. The pub's traditional frontage features painted timberwork, decorative stained glass windows, and prominent gold lettering, marking it out as a character building within the historic streetscape of Lancaster.
The pub is named after John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster and one of the most powerful figures in fourteenth-century England. As the fourth son of King Edward III, John of Gaunt gave his name to the Duchy of Lancaster, which remains closely associated with the city. Pubs bearing his name are found across England, reflecting his enduring place in national and regional history.
Ye Olde John O'Gaunt has served generations of locals and visitors and forms part of Lancaster's rich pub heritage, linked to the city's role as a historic county town, port, and centre of trade. Market Street itself lies close to other significant civic and commercial buildings, reinforcing the pub's role as a social hub within the urban fabric.
The image captures everyday life outside the pub, with people gathered at the entrance and window, illustrating the continued social function of traditional British pubs in town centres. Photographed in daylight, the scene is well suited for editorial use covering British pub culture, historic inns, Lancaster heritage, and the lived character of English market towns.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64THM - This image shows Lancaster Town Hall, a prominent civic building located in the centre of Lancaster, Lancashire. The imposing stone façade features classical columns, a sculpted pediment, and a central clock tower, reflecting the neoclassical architectural style commonly adopted for municipal buildings in Britain during the nineteenth century.
Lancaster Town Hall has long served as the administrative heart of the city, symbolising local governance, civic authority, and public life. Its elevated position and broad steps create a formal approach, while the surrounding trees and open space soften the building's monumental presence within the urban landscape.
The detailing of the façade, including the carved relief in the pediment and the symmetrical window arrangement, highlights the importance placed on architecture as an expression of civic pride during the period of Lancaster's development as a county town. The presence of people walking across the forecourt situates the building within everyday city life, reinforcing its continued relevance as a working public space.
Photographed in clear daylight under blue skies, this image captures Lancaster Town Hall as both a historic landmark and a functioning part of the modern city. It is well suited for editorial use covering British local government, civic architecture, heritage buildings, and the character of historic county towns in England.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3838285938 - 'A classic services built from stout 1965's concrete, an iconic landmark on britains first motorway, M6 Preston Bypass.
It used to be Rank, then Granada, was Forton, then Lancaster, then Lancaster (Forton).
The tower is called 'The Pennine Tower', and when it opened it had a restaurant with a panoramic view. However, the tower fell short of the Health and Safety regulations for the number of emergency exits required in a public building, so it had to be closed. It's now only used for staff training and offices.
The tower is unique to the services, but Rank built slightly smaller versions at other services of theirs such as Hilton Park, which has suffered exactly the same fate. Although the one here is the 'daddy' (as they say).
In 2008 the services won a five star loo award, one more than in 2006. Worth sharing that with you, in case you might consider holding on until Knutsford.
Rumours that the cafe used to revolve inside like 'Piz Gloria' in Switzerland where the famous James Bond was filmed'on her Majesty's Secret Service are untrue. (apparently).

Lancaster was opened in 1965 by Rank under the name 'Forton'. When Granada eventually grasped hold of the services, they renamed it to 'Lancaster'. Unusually, Granada later changed this to 'Lancaster (Forton)' - it's not clear whether dropping the name Forton resulted in a drop of trade or just upset a few of the services' fans. This name stuck around for about a decade, but Moto are now slowly dropping the 'Forton' part leaving just 'Lancaster'. The Highways Agency still refer to it as 'Lancaster (Forton)' when there is an incident at the services.
In early 2007, a Marks and Spencers store opened here, replacing the Ladbrokes and Little Chef. The southbound Little Chef went on to become a Greggs.
For many years the name 'Forton services' was used on all example diagrams of road signs, including drawings of non-motorway signs. The services used to be listed by the Highways Agency as an approved truckstop, but this is no longer the case.
The southbound side once had a tourist information office, itself formerly a fast food unit of some sort.
