Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWDK0N - A Scottish Soldier is a song written by Andy Stewart using the tune of The Green Hills of Tyrol, which was transcribed by John MacLeod during the Crimean War from La Tua Danza S? Leggiera, a chorus part in the third act of Gioachino Rossini's 1829 opera Guglielmo Tell (William Tell). The song is about a dying Scottish soldier, wishing to return to the hills of his homeland rather than die in the Tyrol. The song was one of two US chart entries by Andy Stewart. A Scottish Soldier reached no. 1 in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It spent 36 weeks in the UK Singles Chart in 1961.
This song was the entrance theme of professional wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper
Andrew Stewart MBE (30 December 1933 ? 11 October 1993) was a Scottish singer and entertainer. He presented the BBC TV variety show The White Heather Club throughout the 1960s, and his song Donald Where's Your Troosers? was a hit in both 1960 and 1989. Internationally, the song most closely associated with Stewart is A Scottish Soldier.
Stewart was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1933, the son of a teacher. When he was five years old, the family moved to Perth and then, six years later, to Arbroath.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PFAAP8 - In electrical safety testing, portable appliance testing (PAT, PAT inspection or PAT testing) is a process in the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia by which electrical appliances are routinely checked for safety. The formal term for the process is in-service inspection & testing of electrical equipment. Testing involves a visual inspection of the equipment and any flexible cables for good condition, and also where required, verification of earthing (grounding) continuity, and a test of the soundness of insulation between the current carrying parts, and any exposed metal that may be touched. The formal limits for pass/fail of these electrical tests vary somewhat depending on the category of equipment being tested.
British law (the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989) requires that all electrical systems (including electrical appliances) are maintained (so far it is reasonably and practicable) to prevent danger. Private houses are not covered by this legislation, although occupiers' liability requires householders not to deliberately expose occupants or visitors to unreasonable risks. The HSE and the local authority are responsible for the policing of this legislation.
Fixed wiring in buildings
Guidance from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET, published under the IEE brand) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends that a competent person must inspect the installation regularly in any public building or a place that people work. They suggest initial intervals for combined inspection and testing that range from three months (for construction equipment) to one year, and in many cases, longer periods for re-testing (certain types of appliance in schools, hotels, offices and shops)
Carrying out PAT
This can be done by hiring an external company to test all the electrical products in a business (someone who has had some PAT training, either by an official qualification or by attending a health and safety course

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF7EC - Tobi Lark (born Bessie Grace Gupton
1941) is an American-born Canadian soul and gospel singer, who also recorded under the names Bessie Watson and Tobi Legend. She had a top 40 hit in 1970 in Canada with We're All in This Together. Elsewhere her best known record is Time Will Pass You By, regarded as a classic of Northern soul, which she recorded in 1968 believing it was just a demo
it was released under the name of Tobi Legend without her approval.
Life and career
She was born Bessie Grace Gupton in Alabama, the daughter of gospel singer Emma Washington. She grew up in Detroit and first performed in her mother's choir, the Emma Washington Gospel Singers. She toured with the group for ten years, from the age of nine, before securing her first professional job, as a backing singer for B. B. King. As Bessie Watson, she first recorded in 1963, releasing the single 'Deed I Do backed by the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, on the Riverside label, and then two singles, I'm in Your Corner and Wake Up Crying on the Jay Pee label. As Tobi Lark, she then recorded several singles for the Palmer, Topper, and U.S.D. labels, but none achieved much commercial success. She also performed with the Impressions, the Four Tops, Ben E. King, Wilson Pickett, King Curtis, and Duke Ellington, among others
In 1968, in Detroit, she recorded Time Will Pass You By, a song written by English-born songwriter and record producer John Rhys Eddins with Nick Zesses and Dino Fekaris. The record was released on the Mala label under the name Tobi Legend, but it was unsuccessful until it was picked up in the early 1970s by followers of the Northern soul scene in the UK. The song became known as one of the Three Before Eight, played at the conclusion of every all-nighter at the Wigan Casino club, and has since featured on several anthologies of Northern soul music including The Best Northern Soul All-Nighter ... Ever!, The Northern Soul Story, and The Wigan Casino Story

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R15NEA - Retsina (Greek: ?????????) is a Greek white (or ros??) resinated wine, which has been made for at least 2,000 years. Its unique flavor is said to have originated from the practice of sealing wine vessels, particularly amphorae, with Aleppo pine resin in ancient times. Before the invention of impermeable glass bottles, oxygen caused many wines to spoil within the year. Pine resin helped keep air out, while infusing the wine with resin aroma. The Romans began to use barrels in the 3rd century AD, removing any oenological necessity for resin, but the flavor itself was so popular that the style is still widespread today.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JWRH39 - Crewe North Junction signal box is signal box with a Westinghouse All Electric Style 'L' lever frame which was commissioned, along with Crewe South Junction signal box (which also had a Westinghouse Style 'L' frame), on 29 March 1940 as part of a resignalling project at Crewe railway station. It saw continued use until 19 July 1985 when it was decommissioned for a redesign of Crewe station and its track layout and signalling.
Location
Crewe North Junction signal box is located on the junction to the North of Crewe railway station between the Chester Lines and the West Coast Main Line. The signal box can also see the lines to and from Manchester and Sandbach and all the platforms on the north side of the station. The signal box, still at its original site, is located in Crewe Heritage Centre where there are now demonstrations and simulations of the signalling in the North Junction box by a team of signallers.
Design
Crewe North Junction signal box contained a lever frame of the Westinghouse Style 'L' design (Westinghouse is now part of Invensys Rail) which was commissioned with Crewe South Junction signal box, which was of the same design. Crewe North Junction signal box was built to a non-standard ARP design, with 15 thick reinforced concrete walls and an 18 thick concrete roof. This was due to it being commissioned in 1940 during World War II so it was built to survive an air raid.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JG220C - A high-octane rock and blues outfit that hit like a hurricane, Eddie and The Wolves have been carving out their own unique path for the last few years, dominating the independent scene with a visceral blend of bold, authentic sounds. After first surfacing in 2018 with the release of their titanic debut single ?Love in the City', the band have been winning over fans and critics alike, and in March, they're set to embark on their most explosive tour to date.
Described by Where The Music Does The Talking as a band you must-see live, Eddie and The Wolves have built their sound on a caustic mix of flowing riffs, funky guitar solos, and thunderous percussion, crafting modern blues anthems that shine with a twist of dirty rock ?n' roll brilliance.
Having opened for bands like Slade, Razorlight and Reef, and sharing stages with Arrielle, Adam Slack of The Struts, and Kelsey Karter, Eddie and The Wolves have proved their musical mettle time and time again, and their recently released debut album ?War' has quickly become one of the year's most intoxicating releases. Delivering fourteen tracks that shine with grit, determination, and an undeniably heavy sound.
Described by Stargazer Music Magazine as If Fleetwood Mac had a baby with Biffy Clyro, and that baby was obsessed with Stevie Ray Vaughn, the album is a textured amalgamation of vintage and modern sounds, delivering a whirlwind of originality and colour that soothes the soul, frees the mind, and keeps your utterly entranced.

The famed mosaic artworks that once adorned Manchester's alternative shopping emporium Afflecks are to return ? with acclaimed Manc artist Mark Kennedy to create a host of new works piece by piece
Mark's mosaic masterpieces of city icons like music impressario Tony Wilson, footballer George Best and Smiths frontman Morrissey became a much-loved city landmark hung on the exterior of Afflecks ? but when the site was taken over by developer Bruntwood in 2008 they were kept by the previous manager.
But now Mark tells The Diary he has been commissioned to create a raft of new mosaics that will once again decorate the arches of the old building that corners a huge site off Oldham Street, Tib Street and Dale Street in the Northern Quarter.
He says: I suppose my artwork is Afflecks, that's what I do, it's what I'm known for. It has been my gallery for the past 12 years or so, so obviously I'm happy to be asked back.
The first, that depicts the famous On The Sixth Day God Created Man...Chester quote, will return this week on the Afflecks Arcade.
And Mark, pictured here in his studio, is now hard at work on the second, an image of labrador Bruce, who the Black Dog Ballroom bar in the basement of Afflecks is named after.
Mark then has plans to create new mosaics of Manc icons, including a special Factory Records piece, to commemorate the label's late, great Tony Wilson, New Order manager Rob Gretton and legendary music producer Martin Hannett, among others

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3TJW4 - The Ruts (later known as Ruts DC) are an English reggae-influenced punk rock band, notable for the 1979 UK top 10 hit single Babylon's Burning, and an earlier single In a Rut, which was not a hit but was highly regarded and regularly played by BBC Radio 1 disc jockey John Peel. The band's newfound success was cut short by the death of lead singer Malcolm Owen from a heroin overdose in 1980. Despite this the band continued under a different musical style as Ruts D.C. until 1983 when they disbanded, the band later reformed in 2007.
Career
Formation and early days
The Ruts were formed on 18 August 1977. On 16 September 1977, the band made their live debut, playing three songs during a break in a set by Mr Softy (another Fox band) at The Target, a pub in Northolt, Middlesex. The band consisted of singer Malcolm Owen (vocals), Paul Fox (guitar), John Segs Jennings (bass) and Dave Ruffy (drums). Ruffy moved from bass to drums after original drummer Paul Mattocks left, and the band was active in anti-racist causes as part of the Misty in Roots People Unite collective based in Southall, West London, playing several benefits for Rock Against Racism. Although the band were often described as coming from Southall, Owen was from Hayes, Fox moved from Kilburn to Hayes in the 1960s, whilst Ruffy and Segs were based in South London. Ruffy had been born in York, but spent his formative years in the East End of London, whilst Segs grew up in Southend-on-Sea, having been born in the East End.
Schoolboy friends Fox and Owen shared a mutual interest in music, having met at Hayes Manor School. In the early 1970s they lived together in a commune on the Isle of Anglesey off the coast of North Wales, where they formed a rock band called Aslan with Paul Mattock, who played flute, guitar and keyboards and later became the Ruts' first drummer.
Post Office telephone engineer Jennings met record shop manager Ruffy in 1976

Ian Kevin Curtis (15 July 1956 ? 18 May 1980) was an English singer-songwriter and musician. He was the lead singer and lyricist of the post-punk band Joy Division and recorded two albums with the group: Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980). Curtis was known for his bass-baritone voice, dance style and songwriting typically filled with imagery of desolation, emptiness and alienation.
Curtis suffered from epilepsy and depression and took his own life on the eve of Joy Division's first North American tour and shortly before the release of Closer. His death led to the band's dissolution and the subsequent formation of New Order.
Despite their short career, Joy Division have exerted a wide-reaching influence. John Bush of AllMusic argues that they became the first band in the post-punk movement by ... emphasizing not anger and energy but mood and expression, pointing ahead to the rise of melancholy alternative music in the '80s.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M84JDN - Identity Ireland is a minor political party in Ireland. A right-wing to far-right party, it has no representation at local or national level. It was launched in Dublin on 22 July 2015. Its founders are Gary Allen, Peter O'Loughlin and Alan Tighe. O'Loughlin, the party's national spokesperson, contested the 2016 Irish general election and 2019 European Parliament election
Identity Ireland states that it favours Irish sovereignty by leaving the European Union and a return to the Irish pound. The party supports a controlled border policy in order to curtail the immigration that, it says, is putting strain on the Irish welfare system. It also supports more careful vetting of incoming asylum seekers. It supports the Irish branch of Pegida, and has joined the Fortress Europe coalition. It advocates the introduction of a two strike law for serious offences, as well as the re-introduction of penal labour. It supports keeping Ireland's neutrality. It also advocated in favour of Brexit
Identity Ireland has been accused of being racist. Some of its press conferences and meetings, and its launch, have been disrupted by protesters

The monument was first carved by Kerry Morrison and installed in Granby Row in 1992. Granby Row is the site of the factory where the first batch of Vimto was made by John Noel Nichols back in 1908.
After 19 years of the Manchester weather and attention from city revellers, the monument was in need of a refresh and it has been brought back to its former glory by Nick Lumb at Acorn Furniture in Wrexham.

Variants include the ascot tie, bow tie, bolo tie, zipper tie, cravat and clip-on tie. The modern necktie, ascot, and bow tie are descended from the cravat. Neck ties are generally unsized, but may be available in a longer size. Men and boys wear neckties as part of regular office attire or formal wear.

Neckties can also be worn as part of a uniform (e.g. military, school and waitstaff), whereas some choose to wear them as everyday clothing attire. Among younger men, neckties are sometimes worn as a casual item, tied loosely around the neck, with the top shirt button unfastened

Neckties are traditionally worn with the top shirt button fastened, and the tie knot resting between the collar points. Among younger men, neckties are sometimes worn as a casual item, tied loosely around the neck, with the top shirt button unfastened

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNTG - This image shows a close-up of the 7-inch 45 rpm vinyl single label for So It Goes by Nick Lowe, released in 1976 on Stiff Records. The record carries the catalogue number Stiff BUY 1A, marking it as the first official release on the Stiff Records label.
Stiff Records played a pivotal role in the development of British punk, new wave, and pub rock, launching or supporting artists including Elvis Costello, Ian Dury, The Damned, and Wreckless Eric. So It Goes is widely regarded as a foundational release of the UK punk era, blending raw energy with pop songwriting.
The distinctive blue-and-black label design and promotional slogans reflect Stiff Records' irreverent branding and DIY ethos. The image is suitable for editorial use covering music history, punk culture, record collecting, independent labels, and 1970s British popular music.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DN6N4T - The Ha??ienda lost its entertainments licence in June 1997. The last night of the club was 28 June 1997, a club night called 'Freak' featuring DJs Elliot Eastwick and Dave Haslam (the final live performance was by Spiritualized on 15 June 1997). The club remained open for a short period as an art gallery before finally going bankrupt and closing for good. After the Ha??ienda officially closed, it was used as a venue for two free parties organised by the Manchester free party scene. One of the parties ended in a police siege of the building while the party continued inside. These parties resulted in considerable damage and painted graffiti to the Ben Kelly designed interior.
Following a number of years standing empty, The Whitworth Street West site was purchased from the receivers by Crosby Homes. They chose to demolish the nightclub, and reuse the site for the construction of domestic flats. The iconic name was kept for the new development, with the Ha??ienda name licensed from Peter Hook, who owns the name and trademark. The nightclub was demolished in 2002 - Crosby Homes had acquired the property some time before that and, on Saturday 25 November 2000, held a charity auction of the various fixtures and fittings from the nightclub. Clubgoers and enthusiasts from across the country attended to snap up memorabilia ranging from the DJ booth box and radiators to emergency exit lights. The DJ booth was bought by Bobby Langley, ex Ha??ienda DJ and Head of Merchandise for Sony Music London for an undisclosed fee.
Crosby Homes were widely criticised for using the Hacienda brand name - and featuring the strapline Now the party's over...you can come home in the promotional material. Another controversial feature of the branding campaign was the appropriation of many of the themes which ran through the original building. One of these was the iconic yellow and black hazard stripe motif which was a powerful symbol in the club's original design, featuring as it did on the club's

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DEJNDD - The phonograph, record player, or gramophone (from the Greek: gramma, letter and phn?, voice), is a device introduced in 1877 for the recording and reproduction of sound recordings. The recordings played on such a device consist of waveforms that are engraved onto a rotating cylinder or disc. As the cylinder or disc rotates, a stylus or needle traces the waveforms and vibrates to reproduce the recorded sound waves.
The phonograph was invented in 1877 by Thomas Edison. While other inventors had produced devices that could record sounds, Edison's phonograph was the first to be able to reproduce the recorded sound. His phonograph originally recorded sound onto a tinfoil sheet phonograph cylinder, and could both record and reproduce sounds.
Alexander Graham Bell's Volta Laboratory made several improvements in the 1880s, including the use of wax-coated cardboard cylinders, and a cutting stylus that moved from side to side in a zig zag pattern across the record. At the turn of the 20th century, Emile Berliner initiated the transition from phonograph cylinders to gramophone records: flat, double-sided discs with a spiral groove running from the periphery to near the center.
Other improvements were made throughout the years, including modifications to the turntable and its drive system, the needle and stylus, and the sound and equalization systems.
The gramophone record was one of the dominant audio recording formats throughout much of the 20th century. From the mid-1980s, phonograph use declined sharply because of the rise of the Compact Disc and other digital recording formats. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DEJNHK - The phonograph, record player, or gramophone (from the Greek: gramma, letter and phn?, voice), is a device introduced in 1877 for the recording and reproduction of sound recordings.
While no longer mass market items, modest numbers of phonographs and phonograph records continue to be produced in the second decade of the 21st century.

This luggage label is from the late 1930's. It possibly charted someone's journey from Hannover in Germany, via Harwich to Londons Liverpool street station.
During the late 1930's many peoples of all minorities (non-whites, people persecuted for religious, sexual orientation or political reasons) were migrating westward to Britain or the USA. This was to escape what would become the atrocities of the second world war.
Its hard to imagine what this may have been like, for people who recently have relatively seen only peace and stability in their lifetimes.

Chemistry sets were educational toys allowing the user (typically a bored teenager) to perform simple chemistry experiments.
In the United Kingdom, Thomas Salter Science produced a series of seven chemistry sets in the 1970s. mainstays in these sets were vials of chemicals, exotic labels, test tubes and cork stoppers, an instruction manual, litmus paper, safety goggles and a burner of some description.
Amateur chemistry or home chemistry is the pursuit of chemistry as a private hobby. It should not be confused with clandestine chemistry, which involves the illicit production of controlled drugs.

Throughout much of the 20th century, amateur chemistry was an unexceptional hobby, with high-quality chemistry sets readily available, and laboratory suppliers freely selling to hobbyists. For example, Linus Pauling had no difficulty in procuring potassium cyanide at the age of eleven. However, due to increasing concerns about terrorism, drugs and safety, suppliers became increasingly reluctant to sell to amateurs, and chemistry sets were steadily toned down.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM252E - It is manufactured by Abba Seafood. Kalles Kaviar is based on a recipe that is several hundred years old that originates from the Swedish west coast, and in particular from Lysekil. The product is mainly made of salted cod roe (gadus morhua), sugar, canola oil and spices. In French, this type of caviar is sometimes referred to as caviar de Lysekil. Other manufacturers of similar caviar are ??hnbergs Kaviar (often regarded as the connoisseur's alternative, and currently also owned by Abba Seafood) and Boviks kaviar.
Kalles Kaviar has been a commercial success in Sweden ever since its market launch there in 1954. It is internationally recognized as a Swedish product, since many IKEA furniture stores worldwide feature this product in their food markets.
The tube label has maintained the same design from the beginning, and depicts the son of then-CEO of the manufacturing company, Carl Ameln. The tube design is well-recognized in Sweden and in Finland.
The product is also featured prominently in one of Ylvis's musical numbers from their Stories In Norway series on NorgeTV.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RPGEK5 - Anthony Howard Wilson (20 February 1950 ? 10 August 2007) was a British record label owner, radio and television presenter, nightclub manager, impresario and journalist for Granada Television and the BBC.
Wilson was the man behind some of Manchester's most successful bands. He was one of the five co-founders of Factory Records and the founder and manager of the Ha??ienda nightclub. Wilson was known as Mr Manchester, dubbed as such for his work in promoting the culture of Manchester throughout his career.
He was portrayed by Steve Coogan in Michael Winterbottom's 2002 film 24 Hour Party People, and by Craig Parkinson in Anton Corbijn's 2007 film Control.
Depending in what he was working on, he would switch between alternate versions of his name. For example, when he was being a serious formal and respectable persona, such as certain tv presenting appearances, he would use Anthony H Wilson, or for example when reporting for Granada Reports he was referred to as Anthony Wilson, otherwise he would go by Tony Wilson most commonly while on Factory Records business, all alternate versions being legitimate variants of his full name.
In early 2007 emergency surgery was performed to remove one of his kidneys. This forced the postponement of plans to create a Southern Hemisphere version of the In the City festival. Despite the surgery, cancer progressed and a course of chemotherapy was not effective. Wilson died of a heart attack in Manchester's Christie Hospital on 10 August 2007 aged 57. Following the news of his death, the Union Flag on Manchester Town Hall was lowered to half mast as a mark of respect.
The main square of the HOME/First Street development in Manchester, which opened in 2015, is named Tony Wilson Place.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED9E7W - A necktie or simply tie is a long piece of cloth worn for decorative purposes around the neck or shoulders, resting under the shirt collar and knotted at the throat.
Neckties can also be worn as part of a uniform (e.g. military, school and waitstaff), whereas some choose to wear them as everyday clothing attire. Neckties are traditionally worn with the top shirt button fastened, and the tie knot resting between the collar points. Among younger men, neckties are sometimes worn as a casual item, tied loosely around the neck, with the top shirt button unfastened
