What is the current system?
The Scottish government wants to simplify and speed up the existing process by which people can obtain a gender recognition certificate - the legal recognition of a trans person's acquired gender.
At present, people apply to a UK gender recognition panel and typically must present a diagnosis of gender dysphoria.
This is defined by the NHS as being caused by a mismatch between their biological sex (whether they were born physically male or female) and their gender identity (the way in which they see and describe themselves).
Applicants need to provide two medical reports, one from a specialist detailing their diagnosis and another listing any treatment or surgery they may have had to change their sexual characteristics.
They must also prove they have lived full-time in their acquired gender for at least two years - for example showing they have used a different name in official documents, or changed their gender on their driving licence or passport - and swear an oath that they intend to continue for the rest of their lives.

Golden Square have released the timings and events for some of their Pride events set to be held on June 24.
The details were released today, June 1, the first day of the UK's Pride month. Pride is held in June in the UK due to the historical significance of the Stonewall riots that began in June of 1969.
This is the first official pride event in several years in Warrington and coincides with the tragic death of Brianna Ghey in February.
The announcement laid out the day of events across Warrington pride at Golden Square.
Inside the mall there will be an LGBTQ+ information support hub running from 9am to 6pm.
In the old market place there will be events running from 11am till 11pm, ranging from workshops, to queer fashiosn shows, and even a silent disco
This will be finished off with a DJ set with Fleur East at 6pm, as well as a DJ set an aerial show from Crystal from RuPaul's Drag Race UK. This DJ set will be a free ticketed event

A special livery has been created by the East Midlands Railway's LGBTQIA+ Employee Network to celebrate Pride and support diversity in the workplace.
The Pride train features a stunning rainbow ?swoosh' livery also features the tagline ?Lets Roll with Pride' and is now emblazoned to a Class 158 train.
The rail operator has set up six employee network groups, one of which is ?Stronger Together' with an aim of improving the representation of its LGBTQIA+ employees alongside the promotion of diversity and inclusion within their workplace.
Jacob Lane, Duty Depot Delivery Manager and EMR LGBQTIA+ Network Lead said: The idea for a Pride train came about after a discussion in one of our network meetings. We thought this would be an awesome way of showcasing our commitment as a network to set EMR on the right path to promoting Diversity and Inclusion. It's also a great way to show our support to the Pride events taking place on our network, two of which we are sponsoring.
Alongside the Pride train, we have created pronoun badges for any employees who would like to wear one and our Organisation Development & Culture Manager Amanda Elkin, has created a video on the importance of getting pronouns right.
The Pride train will be out and about on East Midlands Railway Regional routes from the 6th of August and will operate the Derwent Valley Line between Derby and Matlock in support of Belper Pride on Saturday the 6th of August and also Derby Pride which is taking place on Saturday the 10th of September. The route has recently been part of a ?500,000 track upgrade project, creating a more reliable railway for passengers.

As it stood, the street infrastructure was unloved with poor paving, lighting and cellar doors making for an environment that didn't appeal to pedestrians during the day, and created obstacles for the high footfall after dark.
BCA Landscape created a unique identity to the once undesirable street, through the use of a bespoke contemporary paving and matching lights, with subtle hints to Judy Garland's ?Yellow Brick Road' dotted along the route. The use of a strong geometric pattern draws people up the street and along the way can be found bespoke paving units which have key characters and elements of the ?Wizard of Oz', from the iconic red shoes to Toto and even the famous Emerald City.
?'Eberle Street is a hub of Liverpool's night time economy and LGBT community so its redesign required an imaginative approach that had the verve and style to celebrate its unique position and elevate it to a prominence it richly deserves. Once complete it will also greatly enhance the experience of the Commercial District and promote the north-south walking routes between the district and the rest of the city centre. Commissioned and paid for by Titus Salt in the mid 19th century, the church is a Grade I listed building and sits within the Saltaire World Heritage Site.
When Titus Salt, a devoted member of the Congregational church, commenced the design and construction of his model village at Saltaire, a Congregational church was the first public building commissioned. Salt donated the land and paid for the cost of the church himself, a cost of ?16,000 (equivalent to ?1,713,080 in 2021).
The church was designed, as was the rest of Saltaire, by the Bradford-based architect partnership of Lockwood and Mawson in the Italianate Classical style. Local firms were used for the works. The firm of John Ives did the woodwork and carvings while Moulton Brothers undertook the masonry work.
Since 1972 the church has been known as Saltaire United Reformed Church following the merger of Congregational Church in England and Wales and the Presbyterian Church of England.
The ceiling of the church was badly damaged and partially collapsed due to being affected by Storm Dennis in February 2020

Our 2019 programme is bold and ambitious, outward-looking and connected, and we are delighted at the collaborations and partnerships that have emerged and continue to grow through Look Again.
An extensive series of talks, workshops and events will also give opportunities to learn more about the work of the participating artists and the creative industries in the north-east.
Launched in 2015, Look Again is now part of Gray's School of Art at Robert Gordon University (RGU) and also holds events throughout the year.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RPGEFB - M Nairn & Co Ltd were the firm of Michael Nairn, specialising in floor-cloths, power looms and linoleum.
And according to that excellent site Grace's Guide to British Industrial History at the 1862 Exhibition in London and the 1867 Paris Exhibition Nairns Floorcloth came into its own and won the prizes.
In 1870 Nairn and Co built a six-storey factory in Kirkcaldy and by 1877 with the introduction of linoleum, Kirkcaldy soon became the largest producer of the new floorcovering in the world.
In the 1920s the family joined forces with a supplier in Erie, Pennsylvania, which manufactured a three-foot wide simulated wood grain product used to border area rugs and linoleum.
This product was known as Congoleum, because the asphalt materials used to make it came from the Belgian Congo in Africa.
The new company called itself Congoleum-Nairn.
Congoleum-Nairn continued to sell Congoleum Gold Seal Rugs and Nairn linoleum through the late 1930's, until its researchers started experimenting with a new material called vinyl.
However, further research into developing vinyl flooring was interrupted when World War II began.
Following the war, the company continued to grow in the rapidly expanding housing market of that period.
2008 Forbo-Nairn is now the UK's only linoleum manufacturer. Forbo-Nairn have their own website.

Organised by Queerchester, which lobbies and fundraises for arts and culture initiatives in the gay village, the project saw the entries of the street art competition winners Glenn Jones (the overall winner), Lauren Jo Kelly, Adam Pryce and Mark Wallis become bigger than they could ever have imagined with the help of renowned graffiti artists Aylo (Hayley Garner) and Cbloxx (Joy Gilleard). Over 950 online votes and 7 judges chose between 29 brilliantly creative entries to pick the winners.

90's Focus led to several of the pubs on or near Canal Street acquiring a predominantly gay clientele. In 1991, Manto (Manchester Tomorrow) bar opened at no. 46. It was built in 1989 by Benedict Smith Architects. Unlike the other gay bars at that time, Manto had large glass windows, allowing the casual passer-by to view what was going on inside. Previously, many establishments catering for the gay community were often keen to conceal activities from the general public, but the architectural design of Manto was seen as a queer visual statement of we're here, we're queer ? get used to it, and a brick-and-mortar refusal to hide any more, or to remain underground and invisible.
Over the next decade, more numerous and larger bars opened along the canal side, turning Canal Street into the centre of the most successful gay village in Europe. Because of this, the Canal Street street signs are regularly defaced to read Anal Treet or Anal Street. The success was further enhanced by the use of Canal Street and its bars in several television series, including Bob and Rose and Queer as Folk, both written by Russell T Davies.

A statue of Turing was unveiled in Manchester on 23 June 2001 in Sackville Park, between the University of Manchester building on Whitworth Street and Canal Street. The memorial statue depicts the father of computer science sitting on a bench at a central position in the park. Turing is shown holding an apple. There is also a Bertrand Russell quotation: Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty?a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture. The sculptor buried his own old Amstrad computer under the plinth as a tribute to the godfather of all modern computers - The Alan Turing Memorial, situated in Sackville Park in Manchester, England, is in memory of Alan Turing, a pioneer of modern computing. Turing is believed to have committed suicide in 1954 two years after being convicted of gross indecency (i.e. homosexual acts). As such he is as much a gay icon as an icon of computing, and it is no coincidence that this memorial is situated near Canal Street, Manchester's gay village.

The statue was unveiled on 23 June, Turing's birthday, in 2001. It was conceived by Richard Humphry, a barrister from Stockport, who set up the Alan Turing Memorial Fund in order to raise the necessary funds. Humphry had come up with the idea of a statue after seeing Hugh Whitemore's play Breaking the Code starring the actor Sir Derek Jacobi, and Jacobi became the patron of the fund. Glyn Hughes, an industrial sculptor from Adlington near Westhoughton, was commissioned to sculpt the statue. The Fund eventually raised around ?15,000, which was far short of the ?50,000 needed to have the statue cast in Britain. No major computer company donated to the fund, which was, according to the sculptor, because Turing was not American. The statue was cast in China.
Turing is shown holding an apple?a symbol classically used to represent forbidden love, as well as being the fruit of the tree of knowledge, the object that inspired Isaac Newton's theory of gravitation, and the means of Turing's own death. The cast bronze bench carries in relief the text 'Alan Mathison Turing 1912-1954', and the motto 'Founder of Computer Science' as it would appear if encoded by an Enigma machine: 'IEKYF ROMSI ADXUO KVKZC GUBJ'.
A plinth at the statue's feet says 'Father of computer science, mathematician, logician, wartime codebreaker, victim of prejudice'. There is also a Bertrand Russell quotation saying 'Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty?a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture.' The sculptor buried his old Amstrad computer, which was an early popular home computer, under the plinth.

The Manchester Pride Festival is an annual event held on the August bank holiday weekend. Manchester Pride's headquarters are in Piccadilly, Manchester City Centre. Manchester Pride had a total income of ?3,238,817 in the financial year ending 31 December 2021, had 10 employees, and used the services of 242 volunteers. Manchester Pride is regarded as one of the leading pride movement's worldwide, often trialling new innovative initiatives. The organisation is managed by a Board of Trustees who are, in turn, Directors of the subsidiary companies Manchester Pride Limited and Manchester Pride Events Limited. It is the largest annual arts festival in England and one of the largest fringe festivals in the world. Brighton Fringe 2018 took place from 4 May ? 3 June. The programme of 2018 included 1008 events at over 166 venues across 4 weeks.
Brighton Fringe runs at a similar time to Brighton Festival, and in 2013 extended its run to four weeks. In 2019, Brighton Fringe will run from 3 May-2 June.
One of the event's main objectives is to promote local talent and the arts. It also offers performers an opportunity for their event to be reviewed or picked up by promoters, as well as going on to Edinburgh. This is why anyone can put on a Brighton Fringe event. In 2011 Brighton Fringe launched the Professional Development Programme, aimed at offering workshops to aspiring performers wanting to progress in the business. In 2012, Brighton Fringe opened its own on-street box office, which provided a physical base for the arts event, selling tickets as well as being a hub for promoters and performers. They also launched Brighton in the Square, a showcase of Brighton Fringe performers at the Leicester Square Theatre in London.
As part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad, Brighton Fringe introduced the Dip Your Toe project in 2012, which featured performances in six custom-built Victorian bathing machines, which were located throughout Brighton and Hove during the month of May. In 2014, the organisation launched an Arts Council England supported scheme called Window which showcases productions suitable for touring.
Brighton Fringe is a registered charity but does not rely on public funding, in fact, less than 3% of its income is generated from public sources. The other sources of revenue include participants' registration fees, advertising, sponsorship and Friends membership.

British Airways i360 was designed, engineered, manufactured and promoted by the team responsible for the London Eye. It is estimated by the developers that the i360 will generate more than 440 permanent jobs

Formerly known as the Brighton i360, the project aimed to attract 739,000 paying customers every year, but has consistently fallen significantly short of this. 'Walk on the Wild Side' is a Lou Reed song from his 1972 David Bowie produced second solo album Transformer. It namechecks taboo topics such as transsexuality, drugs, male prostitutes and oral sex and the term 'colored' to refer to African Americans, a term which was still common in that era.
The lyrics tell of a series of individuals and their journeys to New York City, and refers to several of the regular 'superstars' at Andy Warhol's New York studio, The Factory, namely Holly Woodlawn, Candy Darling, Joe Dallesandro, Jackie Curtis and Joe Campbell (referred to in the song by his nickname Sugar Plum Fairy). Candy Darling was also the subject of Reed's song 'Candy Says'.
The saxophone solo played over the fadeout of the song was performed by Ronnie Ross, who had previously taught David Bowie to play the saxophone during Bowie's childhood. It has been heavily covered by Echo and the Bunnymen and The Strokes to name a few.

This shot was taken at the showery Manchester Pride 2010. I dont know the name of the pictured TGirl, but she was very friendly! Her handouts were from Cruz 101, the blurb says is Manchester's biggest and busiest Gay nightclub. It is located next to Canal Street in Manchester's Gay Village.

The first 'gay pride' event in Manchester was held in 1990. EuroPride was hosted in Manchester in 2003, and Since 2004 the title 'Manchester Pride' has been adopted. It is one of the longest running in the country and attracts thousands of visitors to the city's Gay Village, which centres around Canal Street, each year. The event comprises a Pride march, and several days of various arts, music and cultural events all over the city as well as a festival during the August bank holiday weekend within the gay village itself.

'Boys and girls' was the lead single from the 'Park Life' album. It was Blur's first top 5 UK hit and most successful single until 'Country House' reached number 1 the following year. The single was seen as a comeback for the band, who had had a lean commercial period for a couple of years. The song surpassed the band's previous commercial peak 'There's No Other Way' by three spots on the UK Singles Chart.
The video, directed by 10cc's Kevin Godley, featured Blur performing the song against a bluescreen backdrop of documentary footage people on 18-30 package holidays. Godley branded the video as 'Page 3 rubbish' while Blur found it 'perfect'. The front cover of the single was taken from a pack of Durex condoms.
In 1994, the song was named single of the year by NME and Melody Maker in the UK. It was also nominated for best song at the MTV Europe Music Awards. Everyone should own at least one Blur album, my choice would be the 'Midlife: A Beginner's Guide to Blur'. Track it down, tell 'em I sent you.

Manchester has a wealth of LGBT culture and activities. The sitcom drama 'Queer as folk' was set in the Canal St area of the city. 20th century broadcaster and social commentator Brian Redhead once said 'Manchester ... is the capital, in every sense, of the North of England, where the modern world was born. The people know their geography is without equal. Their history is their response to it'. Whilst Ian Brown of the Stone Roses has previously said that 'Manchester has everything except a beach' (er.. top man, bob-on!).
Manchester has claimed to have the UK's largest gay population outside of London. Gay Village, centred on the Canal Street area, is home to numerous shops, restaurants, bars and clubs. On the last weekend in August it hosts the Manchester Pride Festival (previously known as Mardi Gras and Gayfest).
Manchester's gay culture was brought to mainstream attention on television series Queer as Folk and Coronation Street. It is also the birthplace of several gay rights organisations including the Campaign for Homosexual Equality, Queer Youth Alliance, The Lesbian &
Gay Foundation.
Manchester has its own gay sports teams, Village Manchester FC (soccer), Northern Wave (swimming) and Village Spartans (Rugby) which take part in Manchester's annual Pride Games. In the 1990s Manchester City Council gave support to the establishment of a gay centre and employed four lesbians and gay men to help implement their equal opportunity policy. Their work continued in spite of Section 28 and the City Council actively supported the Mardi Gras and other gay events.
The year round gay and lesbian heritage trail exhibits Manchester's gay history. In 2003, Manchester played host city to the annual Europride festival. The Lesbian &
Gay Foundation, Britain's biggest gay charity, is based on Richmond Street in the city centre. Manchester Metropolitan University has been named the most gay friendly university in the UK.

The pedestrianised street, which runs along the west side of the Rochdale Canal, is lined with gay bars and restaurants. At night time, and in daytime in the warmer months, the street is filled with visitors, often including gay and lesbian tourists from all over the world. The northern end of the street meets Minshull Street and the southern meets Princess Street
part of the street looks across the Rochdale Canal into Sackville Park.
90's Focus led to several of the pubs on or near Canal Street acquiring a predominantly gay clientele. In 1991, Manto (Manchester Tomorrow) bar opened at no. 46. It was built in 1989 by Benedict Smith Architects. Unlike the other gay bars at that time, Manto had large glass windows, allowing the casual passer-by to view what was going on inside. Previously, many establishments catering for the gay community were often keen to conceal activities from the general public, but the architectural design of Manto was seen as a queer visual statement of we're here, we're queer ? get used to it, and a brick-and-mortar refusal to hide any more, or to remain underground and invisible.
Over the next decade, more numerous and larger bars opened along the canal side, turning Canal Street into the centre of the most successful gay village in Europe. Because of this, the Canal Street street signs are regularly defaced to read Anal Treet or Anal Street. The success was further enhanced by the use of Canal Street and its bars in several television series, including Bob and Rose and Queer as Folk, both written by Russell T Davies.

He was born into slavery at Hierapolis, Phrygia (present-day Pamukkale, in western Turkey) and lived in Rome until his banishment, when he went to Nicopolis in northwestern Greece for the rest of his life. His teachings were written down and published by his pupil Arrian in his Discourses and Enchiridion.
