Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X9BPBE - This documentary stock image shows Transport in Liverpool, Merseyside, public bus service 14A Kirby - United By Music, at Royal Court, Roe St, England, UK, L1 1EP - Stagecoach SM66 VBV. The row metadata places the subject at Roe Street, Liverpool, Merseyside, England, UK, L1 1EP. The spreadsheet date indicates 14 May 2024, so the picture can also work as a time-specific archive record. Plainly, the image is useful because it shows travel, transport, bus, service, buses, United By Music, Liverpool, Kirby, with search-relevant terms including travel, transport, bus, service, buses, United By Music, Liverpool, Kirby, Stagecoach, Roe, public, services, travelling, street. Transport pictures are especially useful because they show the infrastructure and passenger experience behind policy debates about connectivity, reliability and regional investment. Liverpool carries a global identity built from port history, music heritage, football, tourism, nightlife and regeneration. Images from the city centre and Cavern Quarter speak to both Beatles pilgrimage and the everyday economy of bars, visitors, streets and signs. Transport images are useful because they show the lived reality behind policy debates about public transport, reliability, fares, regional connectivity, disabled access, climate goals, commuter patterns and the social value of buses and railways. It has strong value for publishers needing authentic documentary imagery for news pages, blog articles, council reports, social media graphics, presentations, magazine features and local-history explainers. Historically and socially, this kind of image can help connect past and present: older streets, civic institutions, transport systems, shops, signs, political messages or public services are not frozen museum pieces, but part of how people understand modern life, local identity and economic change.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T19PFD - Ask for Angela
The Met and the Mayor of London have joined together with Safer Sounds, part of the Safer Business Network, and licensed venues across the capital to help keep people safe while enjoying a night out.
The safety initiative ˜Ask for Angela' is being rolled out to bars, clubs and other licensed businesses across London and other cities. People who feel unsafe, vulnerable or threatened can discreetly seek help by approaching venue staff and asking them for ˜Angela'. This code-phrase will indicate to staff that they require help with their situation and a trained member of staff will then look to support and assist them. This might be through reuniting them with a friend, seeing them to a taxi, or by calling venue security and/or the police.
Venues that support ˜Ask for Angela' have been given Welfare And Vulnerability Engagement (WAVE) training. Delivered by the Met's licensing officers and Safer Sounds, it gives staff the ability to help customers who may be in a situation that makes them vulnerable or unsafe.
˜Ask for Angela' was originally developed by Lincolnshire County Council and adopted by the Met in 2016 as a localised initiative by its police licensing officers. The introduction of WAVE training in 2017 underpinned the delivery of Ask for Angela and more venues began to take on the initiative.
Organisations can receive WAVE training through the Safer Sounds Partnership or via their local licensing team. The training explores what vulnerability is, how to identify it and appropriate interventions. A range of online assets and webinars are available.

Yates is Britain's oldest pub chain. Its motto was moderation is true temperance. The founders, brothers Peter and Simon Yates, were from Preston. Peter (who lived from April 22, 1854“1944) was sent to Spain to learn about wine. Simon went to the US to learn about business methods.
The first Yates Wine Lodge opened in Oldham in 1884
On July 23, 1994, Yates became a public company owned by the Yates Group PLC (Yates Brothers Wine Lodges PLC). The Yates Group also owned Ha! Ha! Bar & Canteen and operated pubs under the Blob Shop and Addison's name. In the late 1990s, its share price rose to reach a high of 550p in 1998.
In June 2001, the Yates Group entered takeover talks with Luminar Group. In July 2001, it withdrew from takeover talks and saying it would instead sell off 25 of its pubs, later putting 18 of them up for sale. On November 1, 2001, the Yates Group sold eight pubs to Morrells for £4 million, with four being in Grantham, Slough, Solihull and Tunbridge Wells.
In October 2003, Yates sold its Aussie White fortified brand to Halewood International for £1 million

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2X9BPAR - A historic Modern Pharmacy display photographed inside Dr Duncan's public house at 9“11 St John's Lane in Liverpool city centre, England. The image shows an ornate wooden cabinet with carved detailing, topped with the words Modern Pharmacy, and containing a framed portrait of a nineteenth-century gentleman, evoking the era of Victorian medicine and apothecaries.
Dr Duncan's is a well-known Liverpool pub housed in a former insurance building close to St John's Gardens and Lime Street. The interior features a range of period displays and historical references, reflecting the pub's Victorian origins and the city's wider social and medical history.
Pharmacy-themed displays such as this recall a time when medicine was dispensed by local chemists and apothecaries, often operating from richly decorated interiors designed to convey trust and authority. Their presence within a modern pub setting highlights the layered reuse of historic buildings in Liverpool's city centre.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating Victorian interiors, pharmacy and medical history, British pub heritage, adaptive reuse of historic spaces, Liverpool cultural history, and period decorative design.

The location is Unit 18-22, Clayton Square, Shopping Centre, Church St, Liverpool, England, L1 1QR, L1. The picture is not just a record shot: it contains visible signage, colour, materials, location clues and everyday street detail that make the image more specific than a generic stock photograph. It would suit editorial use on shopping, retail change, independent traders, high-street survival, tourism, local economies, consumer habits and the visual identity of British town and city centres. For image buyers, the value is in the combination of recognisable subject, readable wording, location evidence and a plain documentary style that can be dropped into news, magazine, web, council, housing, transport, heritage or commercial commentary without looking over-produced. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJ3YJM - A street-level view of Grand Central Hall, located at 35 Renshaw Street, Liverpool, showing its distinctive red brick and terracotta façade with ornate Edwardian architectural detailing. The building features a prominent corner tower, arched main entrance, decorative stonework, and vertical emphasis typical of early twentieth-century nonconformist religious architecture. Pedestrians pass by at street level, providing scale and reinforcing its role within Liverpool's busy city centre streetscape.
Originally constructed as the Methodist Central Hall, the building formed part of a wider movement in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods to create large, multifunctional religious and social spaces within Britain's expanding industrial cities. Over time, Grand Central Hall has been repurposed for cultural, leisure, and entertainment uses, reflecting Liverpool's wider pattern of adaptive reuse of historic buildings.
The image captures the building under bright but lightly clouded daylight conditions, emphasising the contrast between red brickwork, pale stone detailing, and the surrounding urban environment. The photograph is suitable for editorial and commercial use illustrating British architectural heritage, Liverpool landmarks, historic city-centre buildings, and urban regeneration through reuse of former religious structures.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJ6EMW - St Luke's Church, more commonly known by locals as the bombed-out church, is a former Anglican parish church in Liverpool, England. It stands on the corner of Berry Street and Leece Street, at the top of Bold Street.
The church was built between 1811 and 1832, and was designed by John Foster, Sr. and John Foster, Jr., father and son who were successive surveyors for the municipal Corporation of Liverpool. In addition to being a parish church, it was also intended to be used as a venue for ceremonial worship by the corporation and as a concert hall.
The church was badly damaged by bombs during the Liverpool Blitz in 1941 and has been a roofless shell ever since, giving rise to its nickname. It now stands as a memorial to those who died in the war, and has also been hired as a venue for exhibitions and events. The church and its surrounding walls, gates, and railings are recorded in the National Heritage List for England as designated Grade II* listed buildings.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJAFAR - Eleanor Rigby is a statue in Stanley Street, Liverpool, England, designed and made by the entertainer Tommy Steele. It is based on the subject of the Beatles' 1966 song Eleanor Rigby, which is credited to the Lennon“McCartney partnership
The statue consists of a bronze figure on a stone bench. The figure is 128 cm high, 120 cm wide, and 96 cm deep. It depicts a seated woman with a handbag on her lap, a shopping bag on her right, and a copy of the Liverpool Echo on her left. Poking from the shopping bag is a milk bottle, and on the newspaper is a sparrow and a piece of bread. The woman is looking down at the sparrow.
Steele included what he described as magical properties in his design, all hidden inside the bronze figure and representing a different facet of life. These were: a four-leaf clover (for good luck), a page from the Bible (for spiritual guidance), football boots (representing sport and fun), a comic book (for comedy and adventure), and a sonnet (for love)
On the wall behind the figure is an inscribed plaque which originally read:
ELEANOR RIGBY
DEDICATED TO
ALL THE LONELY PEOPLE ...
This statue was sculpted and donated to the City of Liverpool
by Tommy Steele as a tribute to the Beatles.
The casting was sponsored by the Liverpool Echo.

The stores operate throughout the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Austria and the Netherlands, totalling 629 stores in Europe (up from 515 in April 2017) and 56 in Australia in May 2020. In Poland, there are a total of 44 stores. The chain uses a slightly different name from that of the TJ Maxx stores in the United States, to avoid confusion with the British retailer T. J. Hughes
In 1976, TJ Maxx was founded in Framingham, Massachusetts, United States, by Bernard Cammarata. The first international store opened in Bristol, UK, in 1994. The company modified the name to TK Maxx to avoid confusion with the established British retail chain T. J. Hughes (which is not affiliated with TJX).
In 2007, TK Maxx began winding down new store openings within the United Kingdom. Focus was given to revamping older inner city stores, or relocating them. This decision led to the creation of Maxx Maxx, moving from a budget reputation into a large department store format with a wider product range

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJAFG8 - Liverpool Corporation Waterworks and its successors have provided a public water supply and sewerage and sewage treatment services to the city of Liverpool, England. In 1625 water was obtained from a single well and delivered by cart, but as the town grew, companies supplied water to homes through pipes. There were two main companies by the 1840s, but the water supply was intermittent, and there was general dissatisfaction with the service. Liverpool Corporation decided that such an important service should be provided by a public body, and sought to take over the water supply companies.
A series of Acts of Parliament were obtained, the first being the Liverpool Sanatory Act 1846, which created three key posts, the Medical Officer of Health, the Inspector of Nuisances, and the Borough Engineer. The latter post was filled by James Newlands, a visionary man who defined the role of the Borough Engineer, to be copied by many other towns and cities. He set about creating large scale maps of Liverpool, building a water-based sewerage system, making provision for bath houses, wash houses, swimming lessons, minimum sizes for rooms, paving and street lighting. The sewage was emptied into the River Mersey for the tides to take away, but he saw this as an interim measure, with a sewage treatment works being required. This part of his vision was not implemented until the 1980s.

Three days after the accident, editor Kelvin MacKenzie published an editorial which accused people of scapegoating the police, saying that the disaster occurred because thousands of fans, many without tickets tried to get into the ground just before kick-off “ either by forcing their way in or by blackmailing the police into opening the gates. The next day, under a front-page headline The Truth, the paper falsely accused Liverpool fans of theft and of urinating on and attacking police officers and emergency services. Conservative Member of Parliament Irvine Patnick was quoted as claiming that a group of Liverpool supporters told a police officer that they would have sex with a dead female victim
Widespread boycotts of the newspaper throughout Merseyside followed immediately and continue to this day. Boycotts include both customers refusing to purchase it, and retailers refusing to stock it. The Financial Times reported in 2019 that Merseyside sales were estimated to drop from 55,000 per day to 12,000 per day, an 80% decrease. Chris Horrie estimated in 2014 that the tabloid's owners had lost £15 million per month since the disaster, in 1989 prices. Sales also declined to a lesser degree in neighbouring parts of Cheshire and Lancashire. It was revealed in a documentary called Alexei Sayle's Liverpool, aired in September 2008, that many Liverpudlians will not even take the newspaper for free, and those who do may simply burn or tear it up. Local people often refer to the newspaper as The Scum, with campaigners believing it limited their fight for justice

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJCCAR - Ye Cracke is a pub in Rice Street, just off Hope Street, in Liverpool, Merseyside, England. The name is in Old English: the Y is a thorn and the e on the end of Cracke is silent, thus the name is correctly pronounced The Crack. Despite the name, Ye Cracke is a 19th-century pub. The War Office is a small room in the pub, which is the oldest part of the pub.
It has historical connections with The Beatles because it was frequented by John Lennon and his girlfriend Cynthia when they were at art school, as well as the Dissenters, to whom a plaque hangs in the bar.
Thomas Cecil Gray and John Halton conceived the techniques described in their 1946 book A Milestone in Anaesthesia while in the pub.

Sheppard remains the only ordained minister to have played Test cricket,[2] though others such as Tom Killick were ordained after playing Tests
Sheppard was born in Reigate and brought up in Charlwood, Surrey. His father was a solicitor, and a cousin of Tubby Clayton, founder of Toc H
Sheppard was converted to evangelical Christianity whilst at Cambridge, influenced by Donald Grey Barnhouse, and trained for the ministry at Ridley Hall, Cambridge from 1953 to 1955, where he attended the lectures of Owen Chadwick and Maurice Wiles, and was much impressed by a visiting lecturer, Donald Soper. He was involved with the ministry of E. J. H. Nash. He was ordained in 1955, serving his title as curate at St Mary's Church, Islington, but continued to play Test cricket sporadically until 1963, being the first ordained minister to do so. From 1957, he was warden of the Mayflower Family Centre in Canning Town.
Sheppard worked closely with the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool, Derek Worlock, on these issues, and was often an outspoken critic of Margaret Thatcher's government. The Queen visited both Liverpool cathedrals in 1978 to celebrate the long-delayed completion of the Anglican cathedral, and Pope John Paul II visited both cathedrals during his tour of England in 1982. The bishops worked together in the aftermath of the 1981 Toxteth riots, the 1985 Heysel stadium disaster and the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium disaster. Sheppard also worked with other church leaders in Liverpool, including the Methodist chairman John Newton. He gave the Dimbleby Lecture in 1984, on The Other Britain. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJCCBA - Derek John Harford Worlock CH (4 February 1920 “ 8 February 1996) was an English prelate of the Roman Catholic Church and Archbishop of Liverpool
Worlock was born in St John's Wood, London, on 4 February 1920, the son of Captain Harford Worlock and his wife Dora (née Hoblyn), a suffragette (or as she called herself, a suffragist). His father, a journalist turned Conservative political agent, attended Keble College, Oxford, and planned to become a priest in the Church of England
many of his forebears had been Anglican clergy. However, Harford and Dora Worlock converted to Roman Catholicism and raised their son in that faith.
Worlock was a student at St Edmund's College from 1934 to 1944. By this time the family home was in Winchester. As a small boy he was rebuked for having an answer to everything, a trait that remained. He was ordained at Old Hall Green on 3 June 1944 as a priest of the Diocese of Westminster, seminarians being exempt from military service so they could be rushed through to serve as chaplains.
Not long afterwards, he was appointed private secretary to Cardinal Griffin, and assisted successive cardinal-archbishops of Westminster for almost two decades
Worlock was appointed Bishop of Portsmouth on 18 October 1965 and consecrated at the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist, Portsmouth, on 21 December 1965.[6] While in Portsmouth he set about renewing parishes, as well as undertaking the work of developing ecumenical relationships and the building of over 30 new churches in his diocese.
In 1976, he was appointed Archbishop of Liverpool. He was one of the panelists for the first edition of the BBC programme Question Time in 1979. The following year, he convened at Liverpool the National Pastoral Congress which gave rise to the report The Easter People. Important events in his cathedral included the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1982 and the 1990 launch of the Council of Churches of Britain and Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RC6H65 - The Annual Traditional Orange Lodge Parades are returning to Liverpool and Southport this week to commemorate the 333rd anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne which took place in 1690. This year, nearly 70 lodges will be taking part on Wednesday, July 12.
They will be joined by some Orange bands - accordion and concertina bands, and some juniors. Many of the children will be dressed as King William and Queen Mary while the Provincial King, Queen and Bible Carrier are made up of young children from No 5 Enniskillen District who have been preparing for the event for over 12 months.
For the first time in many years, the parade will be led by a traditional pipe band with members from the Everton and District Pipe Band in full highland dress. Minibuses will be driving within the ranks of the parade to allow elderly members, some of whom have over 60 years of service to the institution in Liverpool, or members unable to walk to a full and active part in the proceedings.
This year's parade is the first in 71 years to take place with a king as the monarch. Special badges have been commissioned to celebrate the King's Coronation which took place in May.
Orange parades will take place in Liverpool, Dingle and Southport. The main parades will move off from Netherfield Road and Corn Street in the Dingle around 9am on Wednesday morning.
The parades will make their way to the city centre and meet around the vicinity of Lime Street to board buses to Southport before forming up on London Street, Southport at approximately 11.15am. As per previous years, upon arriving in Southport, Liverpool parade members will be joined by others from all over England including Bootle, Manchester, Sunderland, London, Corby, Birmingham, Sussex and many more locations.
Senior officers from Scotland and Northern Ireland will also join the parade to celebrate the day which will see approximately 3,000 to 4,000 people on the streets of Southport. There is always a carnival atmosphere at the event.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JJ3 - This photograph shows passengers gathered on platforms inside Liverpool Lime Street station as rail services are disrupted due to a signal failure near Warrington. Overhead electronic departure boards display warning messages and altered service information, indicating delays and operational difficulties affecting trains running across the North West of England.
The image captures a busy station environment during the early evening, with commuters, leisure travellers, and staff waiting beneath platform number signs and real time information screens. Trains are visible standing in the platforms, while passengers consult displays and mobile devices for updates, a familiar scene during periods of unplanned rail disruption.
Signal failures are a recurring issue on the UK rail network and often result in knock-on delays across multiple routes. The mention of Warrington highlights the strategic importance of the town as a key rail junction linking Liverpool, Manchester, and the wider North West, meaning faults in this area can have widespread impacts on regional services.
The photograph illustrates the everyday reality of rail travel in Britain, combining modern station architecture, digital passenger information systems, and the human response to transport disruption. Images like this are commonly used to support editorial coverage of railway reliability, infrastructure challenges, commuter experience, and public transport policy in the United Kingdom.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64K9D - This image shows the bronze statue of Ken Dodd situated on the concourse beside the platforms at Liverpool Lime Street railway station. The sculpture depicts the comedian in animated pose, reflecting his distinctive performance style and enduring association with Liverpool humour and popular culture.
Ken Dodd, born in Knotty Ash, Liverpool, was one of Britain's most recognisable comedians and entertainers, renowned for his marathon stand-up performances, rapid-fire jokes, and the fictional Diddymen . He became a cultural icon closely identified with the city, and the statue serves as a civic tribute to his contribution to British comedy and entertainment.
Liverpool Lime Street is the city's principal mainline railway station and a major gateway for visitors arriving by rail. The placement of the statue within an active transport environment connects Liverpool's cultural identity with everyday movement, travel, and public space, allowing commuters and visitors to encounter a figure central to the city's character.
The background of platforms, departure boards, and trains situates the artwork within the working life of the station, blending public art with transport infrastructure. Photographed in daylight, the image is well suited for editorial use covering British cultural heritage, public sculpture, Liverpool identity, rail travel, and the commemoration of nationally significant entertainers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R6AHTX - Queen Victoria by Thomas Thornycroft (1814-1885)
Dated 1869, unveiled in 1870
Bronze on a granite pedestal
St George's Plateau, Liverpool
This striking sculpture of the young Queen Victoria riding side-saddle was commissioned to match the one of Prince Albert already completed by Thornycroft and unveiled in 1866. The Queen's hat is generously plumed, and, appropriately for this position outside St George's Hall, she bears the St. George's riband as a sash across her breast. The fine detail of the statue is most easily seen from below in the embroidered crown and scrolling, as well as the fringe, of the ceremonial saddle-blanket. In a description from the Art Journal, the horse is seen as full of impatient action, which tells on the sway of the figure
an effect difficult to express well in sculpture (qtd. in Cavanagh 95). The Queen holds what looks like a small sceptre, but is actually the handle of a riding crop, the rest of which has been lost. The drape of her voluminous skirt can be seen in the right-hand profile.
According to Bob Speel, this was the piece that made [Thomas Thornycroft's] name. Compare it with his equestrian statuette of the Queen from 1853.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine buskers have been robbed of their spots, so their music has had to go underground.
But it's not just their music that has been taken, it is also their livelihoods. So this Eurovision, Ketchum UK has created a campaign for buskers from Liverpool to give up their usual spots along the Merseyrail network to Ukrainian musicians, giving them the chance to perform for audiences and keep the conversation alive about this unjust war.
Travellers going through the four biggest stations
Liverpool Central, Lime Street, Moorfields and James Street will be able to enjoy authentic Ukrainian busking music.
Each busking spot has a speaker streaming the artists music and a QR code for passers-by to scan to find out more about the musicians' story, videos about them and to donate to the cause.
All proceeds raised will go directly to Supplies for Ukraine C.I.C., who are working to provide essential, lifesaving equipment to civilians and volunteers on the front lines in Ukraine.
There is an accompanying outdoor poster campaign across the Merseyrail network and all tracks are streamed as a playlist on Spotify.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJHNWB - Abellio East Midlands Limited, trading as East Midlands Railway (EMR), is a train operating company in England, owned by Transport UK Group, and is the current operator of the East Midlands franchise
In March 2017, the Department for Transport announced that Arriva, a joint venture between FirstGroup and Trenitalia, and incumbent Stagecoach had been shortlisted to bid for the next East Midlands franchise. Abellio was added in February 2018.
FirstGroup and Trenitalia pulled out of the bidding process in April 2018 to focus on the West Coast Partnership franchise. In April 2019 the franchise was awarded to Abellio, with East Midlands Railway (EMR) to take over the franchise from East Midlands Trains (EMT) on 18 August 2019 for a period of eight years.
In June 2019, Abellio revealed branding and colour scheme using distinct purple and white colours to reflect the heritage of the East Midlands. It also confirmed it would divide the services into three segments:
EMR InterCity for long-distance services from London St Pancras
EMR Regional for services across the East Midlands
EMR Electrics for the outer suburban London St Pancras to Corby service
In April 2021 it was announced that EMR Electrics would be rebranded as EMR Connect.
In February 2023, Transport UK Group concluded a management buyout of Abellio's United Kingdom business, which included EMR

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJHNYF - Why is The Vines on Lime Street known as 'The Big House'?
One of city's oldest and most popular pubs never goes by its real name
Taking up a huge chunk of the corner of Lime Street and Copperas Hill, ˜The Big House' is one of the city's most recognisable boozers.
The Vines - to use its official name - is the sister pub of the Philharmonic and is on CAMRA's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.
The pub was built a whopping 150 years ago by Albert B Vines. In 1907, Walkers took over and rebuilt the pub into an ornate style.
Nowadays, it is known for good beer, live music and karaoke.
But why is it referred to as The Big House?
Echo readers James Parr said: I think it's because it used to be a jail. I remember one of my dad's mates telling me that.
It's been a gin palace and an old billiards room - could it have once been a prison, too?
We spoke to one of the managers at the Vines, Ron Taylor. He said: I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I think it's just called the Big House because it's... big.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJW6ND - Ye Cracke is a pub in Rice Street off Hope Street in Liverpool, England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJW6R3 - Quite simply this is the most spectacular pub in England - indeed, throughout the whole of the UK and it is only matched by the Crown in Belfast. Situated halfway between Liverpool's Anglican cathedral and Metropolitan catholic cathedral, this is a ˜cathedral' among pubs. It was rebuilt in 1898-1900 to designs by Walter Thomas for Liverpool brewer, Robert Cain. Thomas and Cains went on to build the other prodigy pub of central Liverpool, the Vines. Craftsmen and artists from the then University Department of Architecture & Applied Art worked on it under the superintendence of G. Hall Neale and Arthur Stratton.
The exterior is a freely-treated Tudor style designed to resemble a Scottish castle with all sorts of odd details including stepped gables
turrets
balustraded parapet, oriel windows and a stone sculpture of musicians and musical instruments in low relief and a marble façade. One of the most stunning features are the entrance gates to Hope Street
they are an amazing display of Art Nouveau wrought iron and copper gates by H. Bloomfield Bare which carry the motto and arms of the original Robert Cain brewery. The interior, which is what everyone comes to experience, has an unusual, complex plan.
Tour of the pub
Beyond the grand gates is a large northern drinking lobby, for stand-up drinking, with a mosaic floor in front of a bar counter also encrusted with mosaic and a wooden top. There are a number of heavily carved and polished mahogany partitions, Corinthian pilasters and columns, and a wonderful intricate plasterwork high ceiling with decorative cornice. To the left is the former off sales that was accessed by a door on the left of the lobby and it has a mosaic floor and tiled walls of cream and green topped with brown strips. There is another mosaic bar front, the original bar back has stained and leaded and decorative stained glass panels, and partitions have deep etched and frosted panels.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJW6RM - The Everyman Theatre stands at the north end of Hope Street, Liverpool, Merseyside, England. It was founded in 1964, in Hope Hall (once a chapel, then a cinema), in an area of Liverpool noted for its bohemian environment and political edge, and quickly built a reputation for ground-breaking work. The Everyman was completely rebuilt between 2011 and 2014
The building was constructed as Hope Hall, a dissenters' chapel built in 1837. In 1841 it became a church dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist. This became a public concert hall in 1853. In 1912 the hall was turned into Hope Hall Cinema, which continued serving this purpose until it closed in 1963. Prior to its closure the hall had become a meeting place for local artists, poets, folk musicians, and sculptors, including Arthur Dooley, Roger McGough, and Adrian Henri, forming what became known as the Liverpool Scene. This group decided that the building would be suitable for use as a theatre and in September 1964 the Everyman Theatre was opened by Martin Jenkins, Peter James and Terry Hands
In July 2011 the theatre closed to be completely rebuilt. The last major production was Macbeth, starring David Morrissey and Julia Ford, which closed on 11 June. This was followed by performances from Roger McGough and Brian Patten, and by the local pop band Deaf School. The final closure event took place on 2 July. From 28 July contents of the theatre, including seats and benches from the theatre, and pillars from the original Hope Hall, were available for purchase by auction.
The Everyman reopened in February 2014.[8] In October 2014, the Stirling Prize from the Royal Institute of British Architects for the best British building of the year was awarded to Haworth Tompkins for their work on the new Everyman

An 'Anniversary' recital is given by the Cathedral Organist each year on the nearest Saturday to 18th, in commemoration of its dedication.
The organ is situated in two chambers on opposite sides of the Choir. It currently comprises 10,268 pipes and 200 stops contained in nine divisions. The Great, Solo, and Bombarde organs occupy the South case
the Swell, Choir and Positif occupy the North case
the Corona Organ (installed 1997) is situated in a gallery high up under the tower vaulting
and the Central Organ (installed 2007) is located on the South Central Gallery
the Pedal organ being distributed between both North and South cases.
There are two five-manual consoles
the original one up in a dedicated gallery under the North Choir case and a mobile recital console at floor level, the generous gift, in 1989, of Victor Hutson CBE. The Choir and Positif Organs are played from the same keyboard, the Corona organ can be played from either the Choir or Bombarde keyboard, and the Central organ from either the Bombarde or Great.
The 'Trompette Militaire' and the 'Tuba Magna' stops are the loudest voices on the organ, with the 'Militaire' being located high up on the Corona Gallery beneath the Tower vaulting
manufactured and dedicated in 1997, it was the generous gift of Prof Alan Dronsfield. Conversely the 'Tuba Magna' is located high up in the South case of the organ and speaks into the Central Space of the Cathedral.
Both the recital console and the 'Militaire' were manufactured in the Liverpool workshops of David Wells Organ Builders, who are custodians of the organ and responsible for its tuning and current refurbishment.
When the organ was completed in 1926 it was the largest musical instrument ever conceived, and, since the installation of the Central division in 2007, it continues to be the largest pipe organ in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PK7XBY - Charles Lutyens's Crucifixion recently installed at Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral
By Marianna Lutyens
A 15-ft high, wood and steel sculpture of a crucifixion by Charles Lutyens, first seen in his exhibition of work, Being in the World, at St Paul's Church, Bow Common, London has recently been installed in Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral.
Called Outraged Christ , this was a spontaneous work ” it wasn't commissioned ” created intermittently over a number of years. With the intent of having an encounter with this ˜Man' and with the reality of the event taking place, the sculpture was driven by such questions as Who was this Man? , What did He look like? and Why was this crucifixion remembered for 2,000 years over and above the countless other crucifixions that have taken place? It is a moving and powerful image which, in its making, disclosed itself to Charles as an Outraged Christ . Deeply engaged with this extraordinary event, Charles thought, If the resurrection happened, then was it not already inherent in the crucifixion?
The Grade II-listed St Paul's Church, designed by architects Robert Maguire and Keith Murray and consecrated in 1964, was recently voted Best modern church in Great Britain . It also contains the stunning 800-sq ft mosaic mural, also by Charles, called Angels of the Heavenly Host , the largest single artist-created mosaic mural in the British Isles. Asked by the architects to provide a design for this work I said, at the time, ˜Sorry, it is not possible for me to design an angel, angels appear', recalls Charles. But, incredibly, the architects then said, ˜All right, appear us an angel'. Charles recently gave a talk, in situ, for English Heritage about the mural and its making.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PKA5JD - Why do a sleepout in the Cathedral?
The Whitechapel Centre is Liverpool's leading homeless charity, helping those living without a home. Liverpool Cathedral is a vibrant, active place that helps the people of the city in many ways through schools, family workshops, foodbanks and community markets, volunteering, or just being a safe place to keep warm. Together, we are working really hard to make sure everyone in Liverpool can have a place to call home and live to their full potential. Unfortunately, more and more people need our help each year.
‹
We know that many people want to help those they see sleeping on the streets or who are struggling but it can be difficult to know the best way to help. By taking part in the Cathedral Sleepout and raising as much money as possible, you'll enable us to give people food, find them a home and teach them new skills.
‹
The Cathedral Sleepout is a very rare opportunity to sleep inside the fantastic Liverpool Cathedral. The Sleepout doesn't compare to sleeping outside on the streets, but we want to help people understand how difficult it might be when you don't have a place to go.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PKA5M6 - Sir Giles Gilbert Scott OM RA FRIBA (9 November 1880 “ 8 February 1960) was a British architect He was noted for his blending of Gothic tradition with modernism, making what might otherwise have been functionally designed buildings into popular landmarks.
Born in Hampstead, London, Scott was one of six children and the third son of George Gilbert Scott Jr. and his wife, Ellen King Samson. His father was an architect who had co-founded the architecture and interior design company Watts & Co. in 1874. His paternal grandfather was Sir (George) Gilbert Scott, a more famous architect, known for designing the Albert Memorial and the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras Station
In 1901, while Scott was still a pupil in Moore's practice, the diocese of Liverpool announced a competition to select the architect of a new cathedral. Two well-known architects were appointed as assessors for an open competition for architects wishing to be considered. G. F. Bodley was a leading exponent of the Gothic revival style, and a former pupil and relative by marriage of Scott's grandfather
In 1903, the assessors recommended that Scott should be appointed. There was widespread comment at the nomination of a 22-year-old with no existing buildings to his credit.
In 1910 Scott realised that he was not happy with the main design, which looked like a traditional Gothic cathedral in the style of the previous century. He persuaded the cathedral committee to let him start all over again (a difficult decision, as some of the stonework had already been erected) and redesigned it as a simpler and more symmetrical building with a single massive central tower instead of the original proposal for twin towers. Scott's new plans provided more interior space. At the same time Scott modified the decorative style, losing much of the Gothic detailing and introducing a more modern, monumental style

During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026. However, during December 2020, it was announced that First Trenitalia and the DfT had agreed to terminate the WCP franchise at the earlier date of 31 March 2026 as part of the abolition of the franchise system. Since then a number of contract changes have taken place due to COVID-19 and then poor performance by the company. As of March 2023, the company's contract will expire in October 2023.
Avanti West Coast provide the principal long-distance passenger services on the West Coast Main Line between London, the West Midlands, North West England, North Wales and Scotland. Its services connect six of the largest cities in the UK: London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, and Edinburgh, which have a combined metropolitan population of over 18 million. At the start of the franchise, the rolling stock used for these services consisted of 56 Class 390 Pendolino high speed electric multiple units and 18 Class 221 Super Voyager diesel-electric multiple units
in 2019, it was announced that the Super Voyagers would be replaced by newly built Class 805 bi-mode multiple units and Class 807 electric multiple units. Originally, Avanti West Coast was set to operate the pending high speed train fleet intended for use on High Speed 2, although the contract is set to end prior

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJHNRH - Lidl's slowdown of store openings is set to last until 2026, according to a construction graduate affected by recent property job cuts at the discounter.
The slowdown has also extended to recruitment, with Lidl taking on few new starters other than in areas essential to continued operation such as in stores and logistics.
Lidl, which previously opened about 50 stores a year, in February cut its official projection for 2023 to 25. The discounter has stuck to the figure, though a range of sources have said the number of stores it plans to open this year is closer to 10.
The slowdown led to the redundancy of about 12 construction graduates who were taken on in September last year, only to learn of the construction slowdown in November and job cuts in January.
They went from about 50 sites year to 12 for the financial year 2022-23, said the source. They said it was going to be seven in 2023-24 and that it wouldn't resume until 2026.
The source said Lidl had also basically stopped recruitment other than for stores and logistics roles.
Of 298 job opportunities listed on Lidl's careers page on 16 March, 281 were either in stores or as warehouse operatives. Lidl was also advertising a warehouse recruitment open day at its Exeter RDC on 20 March.
Seven vacancies were listed based at Lidl's head office in Surbiton, London. The number of head office-based roles had fluctuated during the week, having been four on 14 March, when The Grocer first approached Lidl for a comment on the numbers.
In contrast, Aldi is currently recruiting for about 100 job opportunities at its head office in Atherstone, Warwickshire, not including warehouse roles.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MA7NFM - Most serious drinking pubs in Liverpool have a bit of heritage about them: they are fixtures as familiar as street lamps and go back decades. Somewhat surprisingly, this is not so with The Dispensary. It sprang up just a decade ago from the shell of an old man's boozer, The Grapes, on the corner of Rapid Hardware Street and Oldham Street in an area that is quietly renowned as a real booze and curry lovers' jackpot.
Pharmaceutical items, fixtures and fittings from old chemist shops, Liverpool University and the Liverpool Pharmaceutical Society abound in an effort to give it a traditional pub atmosphere and visually evoke a Victorian dispensary. It certainly did the trick for real-ale lovers CAMRA who voted it English Heritage pub refurbishment of the year 2000 and also Merseyside pub of the year.
Cains tenants Pauline Keady-Williams and husband Dave run The Dispensary, prescribing a cure-all for the world's ills in the shape of medicine on tap from the Upper Stanhope Street brewery, this week finding itself in dire financial straits with administrators being called in this week.
Why go there?
It serves arguably the best beer in town, if they do say so themselves, although Dominic Hornsby, from the nearby Fly In The Loaf, would doubtless disagree.
Who goes there?
The Dispensary's main allure seems to be for chaps, in there to either marvel at their chosen pint in solitude (I come here to hide from the wife, one un-pictured punter told us) or to philosophise in small huddles about the state of the world, occasionally all pausing to marvel at that pint again.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M95NEM - The legendary Liverpudlian comedian Sir Ken Dodd was a star of stage and screen for more than 70 years. Famed for his tickling sticks, wild hair and buck teeth, he was an entertainer in the music hall tradition, with some of his live shows going on for hours after their supposed finishing time. A master of the one-liner, he was also a successful singer. Dodd worked his beloved Knotty Ash into his routines, telling stories about the Diddymen and the jam-butty mines. He was tried for tax evasion in 1989 and was acquitted, typically then introducing himself on stage as a 'failed accountant'. Ken became Sir Ken when he was made a Knight in the 2017 New Year's Honours list. He passed away aged 90 on March 11 2018, just two days after he married his beloved Anne.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M95NH3 - Built in 1716“17 as a charity school, Bluecoat Chambers in School Lane is the oldest surviving building in central Liverpool, England. Following the Liverpool Blue Coat School's move to another site in 1906, the building was rented from 1907 onwards by the Sandon Studios Society. Based on the presence of this art society and the subsequent formation of the Bluecoat Society of Arts in 1927, the successor organisation laid claim to being the oldest arts centre in Great Britain, now called the Bluecoat.
The school was founded in 1708 by the Reverend Robert Styth (died 1713), rector of Liverpool, and Bryan Blundell, a sea captain and later twice Mayor of Liverpool (1721“22 and 1728“29). Originally constructed in 1716“17, the building was extended until 1718 to function as a boarding school. By the following year, it had 50 children, with room for 100 more, and construction was finally completed in 1725
On 3 May 1941, during the Liverpool Blitz, the concert hall and adjoining rooms were severely damaged by an incendiary bomb and during the following night the rear wing was destroyed by a bomb blast. Restoration took place after the war, being completed by 1951. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building, having been designated on 28 June 1952.
The Bluecoat Display Centre, a contemporary craft gallery, opened in the rear courtyard in 1959. Being known as the Bluecoat Arts Centre from the 1980s, it is now simply called the Bluecoat. From 2005, the building was further restored and a new wing added. It was reopened in March 2008 to coincide with Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M95NM7 - The entrance gates to the Sailors' Home were elaborate decorative pieces of ironwork which served the dual purpose of protecting the Savings Bank and keeping out seamen who might wish to gain entry to the Home after the strict 10 pm curfew.
By April 1852 the lower sections of the gates had been installed, decorated with a combination of elements from the interior balconies
four great panels of rope-work with central mermaid and trident figures identical to those inside. The two outer panels were fixed whilst the two centre sections rolled behind them on rails where they were hidden from sight while the Home was open for business.
The iron-work of the lower gates, produced a solid, intimidating aspect compared with the much lighter appearance of the balcony railings. The huge mass of iron made an impassable barrier but also a massive weight and it would have taken some effort to slide the gates open and close.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MGPDP7 - Blacklers was a large department store on the corner of Elliot Street and Great Charlotte Street in Liverpool, England. The store was famous for its lavish Christmas grotto and its rocking horse, Blackie, which is now on display in the Museum of Liverpool. The store, which at its peak employed a thousand people, also has connections to The Beatles: George Harrison worked as an apprentice electrician at Blacklers in 1959, and Pete Best's mother Mona bought his drum kit from the Blacklers music department.
Blacklers was founded by partners Richard John Blackler and A.B. Wallis in the early twentieth century. Blackler died in 1919 and was succeeded as a partner in the business by his wife Margaret.
Despite the building being severely damaged in The Blitz of May 1941 during World War II, the business survived. Temporary outlets were created in Bold Street and Church Street and the first part of the new store opened on 29 March 1953.
Margaret Blackler died in 1957 without children, at which point the store became the property of several individuals, of which the major shareholder was the sportswoman Vera Kingston (Margaret's god-daughter). In 1983 following Vera's death the store was sold on once again, and all links to the original owners disappeared. The store remained open only a few years more, closing in April 1988.
The site now includes a Wetherspoons chain pub, named Richard John Blackler in honour of the store's founder.

It runs regional and inter-city rail services between the major cities and towns of Northern England and Scotland.
The franchise operates almost all its services to and through Manchester covering three main routes. The service provides rail links for major towns and cities such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Sheffield, Hull, Leeds, York, Scarborough, Middlesbrough and Newcastle. TPE run trains 24 hours a day, including through New Year's Eve night. TPE trains run between York, Leeds and Manchester Airport at least every three hours every night of the week. The franchise operates across the West Coast Main Line, Huddersfield Line, East Coast Main Line and part of the Tees Valley line.
TransPennine Express was one of several train operators impacted by the 2022 United Kingdom railway strike, which was the first national rail strike in the UK for three decades. Its workers were amongst those who participated in industrial action due to a dispute over pay and working conditions
On 26/01/2023, the boss of under-fire train company Transpennine Express has apologised to passengers and admitted services have not been good enough.
Transpennine, which operates across the North of England and into Scotland, has been cancelling trains on a daily basis for months, disrupting many journeys.
Calls have been made for the company to lose its contract for the service.
Matthew Golton, managing director of Transpennine, told the BBC the operator had a recovery plan to do better.
The government has previously said action will be taken if the company can't be turned round.
Asked about Transpennine cancelling 40% of its services last week, Mr Golton said: It isn't good enough.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NXEM3B - Sixty-nine or 69, also known by its French name soixante-neuf (69), is a group of sex positions in which two people align themselves so that each person's mouth is near the other's genitals, each simultaneously performing oral sex on the other. The participants are thus mutually inverted like the numerals 6 and 9 in the number 69 (69), hence the name. This position can involve any combination of sexes.
Method
Variations of the 69 positions include mutual anilingus or double rimming, and digital penetration of either partner's anus or vagina.
In these positions, the partners are said to experience sexual stimulation simultaneously, but this can also distract those who try to focus solely on pleasuring themselves. The position can also be awkward for partners who are not similar in height.
The term sixty-nine or soixante-neuf for mutual simultaneous oral-genital stimulation is an English translation of the euphemistic French term, soixante-neuf. The term soixante-neuf has not been traced any earlier than the Whore's Catechisms published in the 1790s in France, usually attributed to the early leader of the French Revolution, Mlle. Théroigne de Méricourt.
The Kama Sutra mentions this sex position, albeit by a different name: When a man and woman lie down in an inverted order, i.e. with the head of the one towards the feet of the other and carry on [mouth] congress, it is called the 'congress of a crow'.
Internet meme
In reference to the sex position, 69 has become an internet meme, where users will respond to any occurrence of the number with the word nice and draw specific attention to it. This means to sarcastically imply that the reference to the sex position was intentional. Because of its association with the sex position and resulting meme, 69 has become known as the sex number in these communities

Liverpool has been stripped of its coveted world heritage status after Unesco blamed years of development for an irreversible loss to the historic value of its Victorian docks.
The UN's heritage body concluded at a meeting in China on Wednesday that the outstanding universal value of Liverpool's waterfront had been destroyed by new buildings, including Everton football club's new £500m stadium.
The decision is a humiliating blow for the city and gives Liverpool the ignominious distinction of being only the third place to lose the status in nearly 50 years. The other delisted sites were Oman's Arabian Oryx Sanctuary in 2007 and the Dresden Elbe valley in Germany in 2009.
Liverpool has enjoyed world heritage status since 2004 “ placing it alongside the Taj Mahal and Great Wall of China “ as recognition for its role as a major trading power during the British empire and the architectural beauty of its waterfront.
The threat of being delisted has hung over Liverpool since 2012 as Unesco warned that development had significantly changed the city's skyline and was destroying the heritage value of its waterfront.
The decision was announced by Tian Xuejun, the chair of the Unesco world heritage committee, at a virtual conference hosted in China on Wednesday.
The UN agency said development such as Liverpool Waters, a £5.5bn project by Peel Group to transform previously disused land, had led to a serious deterioration and irreversible loss to the area's outstanding universal value along with significant loss to its authenticity and integrity .
It said that as a result of these projects the waterfront had deteriorated to the extent that it has lost characteristics that led to its inclusion on the world heritage list in 2004.
The proposal to build Everton's new riverside football stadium at Bramley-Moore dock would add to the ascertained threat of

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NYNDXF - Tate Liverpool is an art gallery and museum in Liverpool, Merseyside, England, and part of Tate, along with Tate St Ives, Cornwall, Tate Britain, London, and Tate Modern, London. The museum was an initiative of the Merseyside Development Corporation. Tate Liverpool was created to display work from the Tate Collection which comprises the national collection of British art from the year 1500 to the present day, and international modern art. The gallery also has a programme of temporary exhibitions. Until 2003, Tate Liverpool was the largest gallery of modern and contemporary art in the UK outside London.
History
Housed in a converted warehouse within the Albert Dock on Liverpool's waterfront, the gallery was opened on 24 May 1988 by Prince Charles, an event covered by BBC Two television. The original conversion was done by James Stirling but the building was given a major refurbishment in 1998 to create additional gallery space.
In 2007, the foyer area was redesigned by architects Arca to create an updated appearance and better proportions, as well as to improve visitor handling. The gallery cafe was also redesigned by Peter Blake and Liverpool-based architects, Architectural Emporium. The centrepiece of the space is a new timber desk with an undulating orange fascia, which links to the retained colour scheme of the original conversion work by Stirling. A colour-changing wall acts as a backdrop to the simplified brick volume, visible from across Albert Dock. Behind the scenes, Arca also made alterations to the hospitality, cloakroom, events and education areas.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NYNE3D - A love lock or love padlock is a padlock that significant other pairs lock to a bridge, fence, gate, monument, or similar public fixture to symbolize their love. Typically the sweethearts' names or initials, and perhaps the date, are inscribed on the padlock, and its key is thrown away (often into a nearby river) to symbolize unbreakable love.
Since the 2000s, love locks have proliferated at an increasing number of locations worldwide. They are treated by some municipal authorities as litter or vandalism, and there is some cost to their removal. However, there are other authorities who embrace them, and who use them as fundraising projects or tourist attractions.
Love locks are a symbol of everlasting love, a sign of an unbreakable bond and a beautifully significant moment you can share with someone.
The love locks of Liverpool are used by people from all over the world to show their unbreakable love. These locks can be found along the River Mersey, decorating chains along the river with symbols of love.
Many of them have been inscribed with messages and as you walk along, you notice beautiful and intricate padlock designs along with the different dates such as when couples met, were engaged and married.
The actual tradition is believed to have started over 100 years ago during the first world war. Women would write the names of their loved ones on a padlock in the hope it would protect them whilst they were away fighting. The symbols of love have actually developed from heart rendering moments of not knowing if you would ever see your loved one again.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P4JT8N - Metro Bank plc is a retail and commercial bank operating in the United Kingdom, founded by Anthony Thomson and Vernon Hill in 2010. At its launch it was the first new high street bank to launch in the United Kingdom in over 150 years. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
After a period of rapid growth, Metro Bank hit difficulties in early 2019 when it announced it had insufficient capital to meet regulatory requirements, following the discovery of an error in the way it categorised its commercial loans for capital adequacy purposes. As a result, it had to raise an additional £350m of capital. Concerns over the announcement and the bank's ability to raise the capital resulted in the bank's share price falling by 75% in less than four months, and large depositors withdrawing cash, because of adverse sentiment.
Metro Bank was granted its licence by the Financial Services Authority on 5 March 2010, the first high-street bank to be granted such a licence for over 150 years. It planned to open between 200 and 250 branches in Greater London within ten years of starting up. Its first branch opened on 29 July 2010 in Holborn, central London
Metro Bank increased its account holders by 50% in the first half of 2013 for a total of 200,000 customer accounts, including 15,000 business accounts. It was aiming to have 200 UK branches open by 2020.
In January 2019, Metro Bank admitted classifying a portfolio of commercial loans for capital purposes incorrectly, thereby failing to hold sufficient capital to meet regulatory requirements
the error applied to around 10% of its loan book. The miscalculation was identified through a review by the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) but Metro Bank erroneously gave the impression that the bank had identified the incorrect classification itself. To correct the error in the capital classification, Metro Bank announced a £350m share issue and said it would reduce its growth plans.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P4JTH2 - Odeon, stylised as ODEON, is a cinema brand name operating in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Norway, which along with UCI Cinemas and Nordic Cinema Group is part of the Odeon Cinemas Group subsidiary of AMC Theatres. It uses the famous name of the Odeon cinema circuit first introduced in Great Britain in 1930.
The first Odeon cinema was opened by Oscar Deutsch in 1928, in Brierley Hill, Staffordshire (now West Midlands), although initially called Picture House. The first cinema to use the Odeon brand name was Deutsch's cinema at Perry Barr, Birmingham in 1930. Ten years later Odeon was part of the Rank Organisation who continued their ownership of the circuit for a further sixty years. Through a number of sales and acquisitions in the early 2000s the company was purchased by Terra Firma, which merged Odeon and UCI Cinemas to form Odeon UCI Cinemas Group. Most UCI cinemas then took the Odeon brand name in 2006. Terra Firma/UCI sold the company to AMC Theatres in November 2016. Ironically, UCI was originally formed through the merger of AMC UK and Cinema International Corporation in 1989.
As of 2016, Odeon is the largest cinema chain in the United Kingdom by market share (although the Irish cinemas were also included within this figure)

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P4JWWP - Bold Street is a street in Liverpool, England. It is known for its cafés and for the Church of St Luke, which is situated at the top end. The bottom end leads into the area surrounding Clayton Square, which is part of the main retail district of central Liverpool. The bottom end contains more shops which are chain stores. Liverpool Central, a major hub of the Merseyrail rapid transit/commuter rail network, can also be accessed via an entrance on Bold Street next to The Lyceum, a post office which was Europe's first lending library. The middle area contains bars as it leads towards Concert Square, a square containing clubs and bars, and the top end contains more independent shops and cafes. For the most part, Bold Street is pedestrianised and cars do not have access.
History
Bold Street was originally laid out as a ropewalk
a long thin area of land used in the manufacture of rope (the area is now known as 'Rope Walks'). They used to measure the rope from the top of Bold Street to the bottom because it was the standard length needed for sailing ships. It was laid out for residences around 1780 and named after Jonas Bold, a noted sugar trader and banker. In 1802 Bold became Mayor of Liverpool.
Merchants that worked on the docks needed houses close by. Therefore, houses were constructed in Hanover Street first, followed by Duke Street and then Bold Street. The fields that were in the area earlier were also developed quickly into houses. Although there had been port-related industrial activity in the area, with roperies occupying the site of what is now Bold Street to supply the sailing ships, this intensified along with a demand for residential properties so that the merchants could be located close to their business interests.

It is the main shopping area of Liverpool and takes its name from St Peter's Church, which was demolished in 1922. The side streets to the north of Church Street lead to Williamson Square, while the Grade I listed Bluecoat Chambers”the oldest surviving building in Liverpool”is to the south along Church Alley. The Liverpool Athenaeum, an institution founded in the 18th century, is also on Church Alley. The area behind the shops on the south side of Church Street is now part of the Liverpool One shopping complex, which opened in October 2008 after the redevelopment of a large part of the L1 postcode area (hence the name).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P4JXJ8 - Radio City Tower (also known as St. John's Beacon) is a radio and observation tower in Liverpool, England, built in 1969 and opened by Queen Elizabeth II. It was designed by James A. Roberts Associates in Birmingham. It is 138 metres tall, and is the second tallest free-standing building in Liverpool and the 32nd tallest in the United Kingdom.
When considering the height of the building, it has a 10m long antenna on the roof, making it the tallest structure in Liverpool (including antennas).
As testament to the importance of its design, which was described by Historic England as embodying the technological bravura and spirit of the space age , the building was listed at Grade II in November 2020.
The tower takes its name from the main radio station that operates from it, Radio City and its sister station Greatest Hits Radio Liverpool & The North West

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P4JXRR - The Liverpool Playhouse is a theatre in Williamson Square in the city of Liverpool, England. It originated in 1866 as a music hall, and in 1911 developed into a repertory theatre. As such it nurtured the early careers of many actors and actresses, some of whom went on to achieve national and international reputations. Architectural changes have been made to the building over the years, the latest being in 1968 when a modern-style extension was added to the north of the theatre. In 1999 a trust was formed, joining the management of the Playhouse with that of the Everyman Theatre.
The present theatre on the site was designed by Edward Davies, and opened in 1866. It replaced an earlier theatre called the Star Concert Hall. The present theatre was originally named the Star Music Hall
The exterior of the older part of the theatre is stuccoed, and it has a slate roof. Its entrance front faces Williamson Square. It has seven bays and is in three storeys. The central three bays project forward and are surmounted by a broken pediment. On the ground floor the central bays contain three entrances, separated by pillars, which lead to a recessed porch. Over each entrance is an architrave containing a fanlight.
The newer section is constructed in concrete, and largely faced by glass. On the ground floor are entrance doors. Above this, the building is based around three cylinders. The largest of these starts at the first floor and rises through two storeys. It is cantilevered from a central column. To the left is a smaller cylinder, cantilevered from a separate column, interlocking with the larger cylinder. Inside the whole is a hollow column containing the stairs

The cenotaph was designated as a Grade II listed building on 28 June 1952. On 8 November 2013, the designation was raised to Grade I. The reasons given for the designation include its design context with its impressive location adjacent to St George's Hall. Also noted is the architectural interest of the cenotaph, with its horizontal lines forming a foil to the vertical columns of the hall. Referring to its sculptural interest, the citation states that the sculptural work is exceptional and is arguably Tyson Smith's finest and most powerful work. The design is considered to have contemporary significance in that rather than using allegory and heroic idealisation, it employs powerful and modern realist portrayals. The quality of its craftsmanship is praised, and it is also to have group value in its location near other listed buildings

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHW8DG - David Lewis founded a small shop selling men's and boy's clothing in 1856. The sale of women's clothes began in 1864, and by the 1870s Lewis's Department Store was in full swing. There were sections for shoes and tobacco in addition to clothing.
Branches were opened in other cities, beginning with Manchester in 1877. Birmingham, Sheffield and Leicester followed soon after.
The building burnt down in the infamous fire of 1886, and was heavily bombed by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. Nevertheless, it was rebuilt each time, and was refurbished in 1957. This version included the statue ˜Liverpool Resurgent', symbolising the city's renewed vigour following the horrors of the recent conflict.
Lewis's Department Store “ the fifth floor
The fifth floor of Lewis's has taken on an almost mythical status. In the store's heyday, the 1950s, the fifth floor was the place to dine in the self-service cafeteria or the Red Rose restaurant. You could also get your hair done in the salon.
A large mural decorated the walls, but this and the other features were hidden from the public in the 1980s. The floor was closed, and remained so until 2010 when it became the focus of an exhibition at the National Conservation Centre.
Gerald de Courcy Fraser designed the building in 1947 while, Fraser, Sons and Geary carried out construction. It is built from a steel frame with a Portland stone façade.
There are several classical influences in the building. Red granite columns are topped with Ionic capitals, while the columns on the fourth floor are Tuscan in style. A two-storey colonnade above the corner entrance have Doric-style half columns.
Liverpool Resurgent
The statue Liverpool Resurgent is accompanied by relief panels depicting scenes of childhood. The figures in the panels are modelled on the sculptor Jacob Epstein's own children and grandchildren. These represent the younger generation which Liverpool was being rebuilt for.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K41M5G - The curious Pyramidal tomb of William Mackenzie in Liverpool
Making a distinctive appearance in the graveyard of St Andrew's Church, Rodney Street, Liverpool is the 15 foot high pyramidal tomb of the British civil engineer and civil engineering contractor, William Mackenzie.
The tomb lies in what is reputed to be one of the most haunted areas of Liverpool city.
Born near Nelson, Lancashire in 1794 and the eldest of the 11 children, Mackenzie started his career as an apprentice weaver but changed to civil engineering.
He went on to make his fortune working as engineer on canal and railway projects, latterly working on new railway lines in France, Spain, the Italian states and Belgium.
Mackenzie died in 1851, leaving most of his £341,848 estate to his brother Edward, who erected this pyramid shaped monument at the grave in 1868
In the vault beneath lie the remains of William Mackenzie of Newbie, Dumfriesshire, Esquire who died 29th October 1851 aged 57 years. Also, Mary his wife, who died 19th December 1838 aged 48 years and Sarah, his second wife who died 9th December 1867 aged 60 years. This monument was erected by his Brother Edward as a token of love and affection A.D. 1868. The memory of the just is blessed
A wonderfully improbable local legend tells the story of how McKenzie was supposedly entombed seated at a table with a winning hand of cards in his bony fingers.
The yarn insists that as an inveterate gambler, he bet and lost his soul in a game of poker with the Devil and figured that if he was never buried, Satan could never claim his prize.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M475J4 - William Mackenzie (20 March 1794 “ 29 October 1851) was an Anglo-Scottish civil engineer and civil engineering contractor who was one of the leading European contractors in the 1840s
his profitable contracts including tunnels on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway between Edge Hill and Lime Street, and contracts for the Grand Union, North Union, Midland Counties and Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock railways. Non-railway contracts included Liverpool Haymarket, the Manchester and Sheffield Junction Canal and the Shannon navigation
In 1819 Mackenzie married Mary Dalziel, daughter of a Glasgow commission agent. Mary died in 1838 and in 1839 he married Sarah Dewhurst. Mackenzie maintained offices in Paris and in Liverpool and from 1843 he lived at 74 Grove Street, Liverpool, where he died in 1851.
He was buried in St Andrew's Church, Rodney Street, Liverpool in 1851. A pyramid-shaped monument was erected at the grave by his brother Edward in 1868. An inscription on the pyramid door reads: In the vault beneath lie the remains of William Mackenzie of Newbie, Dumfriesshire, Esquire who died 29th October 1851 aged 57 years. Also, Mary his wife, who died 19th December 1838 aged 48 years and Sarah, his second wife who died 9th December 1867 aged 60 years. This monument was erected by his Brother Edward as a token of love and affection A.D. 1868. The memory of the just is blessed.
William's estate amounted to £341,848, almost all of which was left to his youngest brother, Edward. He had no children. The Diary of William Mackenzie, published by Thomas Telford Publishing in 2000, is a full transcription of Mackenzie's handwritten diaries, and it provides insight into his busy life.
The inscription proves that MacKenzie was buried beneath (not entombed inside) the pyramid and that the monument itself was not erected until 16 years after his demise. Even so, the legend of his upright interment continues to be told and believed by many.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M475N6 - Coverage of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster by the British tabloid The Sun led to the newspaper's decline in Liverpool and the broader Merseyside region, with organised boycotts against it. The disaster occurred at a football match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. Ninety-seven Liverpool supporters were crushed to death, and several hundred others were injured, due to negligence by the South Yorkshire Police. On 19 April 1989, four days after the incident, The Sun published a front-page story with the headline The Truth containing a number of falsehoods alleging that Liverpool supporters were responsible for the accident.
Though other newspapers reported stories critical of the fans, The Sun's repetition of unreliable claims as fact and position on the incident in the aftermath of the event led to outrage amongst Liverpudlians. From 1993 to 2012, editor Kelvin MacKenzie, who was in charge of many of the publication decisions, gave conflicting comments on whether he was sorry for the front-page story and said that his mistake was in trusting a Conservative Member of Parliament”Irvine Patnick, who was quoted in the piece. The Sun issued apologies in 2004, after Wayne Rooney was criticised for giving exclusive interviews to the paper, in 2012, under the headline The Real Truth, and in 2016, on a page 8“9 story in the aftermath of a second governmental inquest that concluded fans were unlawfully killed in the disaster.
After a protest in Kirkby in which women burned copies of the newspaper, The Sun (referred to as The S*n or The Scum) was widely boycotted in Merseyside. Sales have been estimated to have dropped from 55,000 per day in the region to 12,000 in 2019. Campaigns against the newspaper including Total Eclipse of the Sun and Shun the Sun first aimed to decrease purchases of the tabloid, and then supply of it by retailers. Journalists from the paper have been denied access to interviews at Liverpool and Everton grounds. Chris Horrie estimated in 2014

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RK9X6X - J. B. Joyce & Co, clockmakers, were founded in Shropshire in England. The company claim to be the oldest clock manufacturer in the world, originally established in 1690, and have been part of the Smith of Derby Group since 1965. The claim is challenged by another English firm of clockmakers, Thwaites & Reed, who claim to have been in continuous manufacture since before 1740, with antecedents to 1610.
William Joyce began in the North Shropshire village of Cockshutt making longcase clocks. The family business was handed down from father to son and in 1790 moved to High Street, Whitchurch, Shropshire. In 1834 Thomas Joyce made large clocks for local churches and public buildings. In 1849 the company copied the Big Ben escapement designed by Lord Grimthorpe. J. B. Joyce also installed synchronous electric clocks in a number of railway stations, including Liverpool's Lime Street Station, Aberystwyth in Wales, and Carnforth in Lancashire. In 1904 J. B. Joyce moved to Station Road, Whitchurch. John Edgar Howard Smith (1907“1983), a former managing director of Smith of Derby Group, designed the first and subsequent synchronous electric movements for J. B. Joyce, and their associated electro-mechanical bell striking units.
In 1964, Norman Joyce, the last member of the Joyce family, retired and sold the company to Smith of Derby. During the 1970s, many of the mechanical clocks were changed to use the electric motors made by the Smith parent company.

On the east side of the hall, between it and the railway station, is St George's Plateau and on the west side are St John's Gardens. The hall is included in the William Brown Street conservation area.
In 1969 the architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner expressed his opinion that it is one of the finest neo-Grecian buildings in the world although the building is known for its use of Roman sources as well as Greek ones. In 2004, the hall and its surrounding area were recognised as part of Liverpool's World Heritage Site.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DB6NJT - The Hillsborough Monument Memorial - Sculptor's Notes more at https://liverpoolsculptures.co.uk/the-hillsborough-monument-memorial/
The Hillsborough monument was comissioned by the Hillsborough Justice Campaign and sculpted by Tom Murphy.
Background: A young girl asked her Father, where is the Hillsborough Memorial? She was told: ˜There is one in Anfield.' She said: ˜Why can't we have one in the city centre for everyone to see.' This simple question was the catalyst for this monument
The monument is circular with a raised design in low relief. The imagery shows an imaginary place, which is meant to guide our thoughts of remembrance and all that has happened since the tragedy
The people depicted in the design are ˜the guardians of the memory', or ˜people like us' Their purpose is symbolic and other figures represent justice, hope and loss. The setting is a beautiful and quiet place, which may help us to think about the characters and individual personalities of those who died. The people who passed away are represented by the birds who fly freely throughout the work.
We reflect and empathise with those who died while considering the people they were, and might have been, were it not for the disaster
Description of the raised relief on the maquette
The design begins with two large tablets that list the names those who died. A dedication and information plaque is situated between the tablets of names with a poem, written especially for the moument, by David Charters (journalist and author). Immediately above the central dedication is a wreath of spring flowers. This reminds us of the season and number of victims who died. A Liver Bird stands guard. Below the information plaque is a rail of football scarves from differing clubs signifying the way football fans responded nationally in the days after the disaster. Around the top rim of the monument is the proclamation: ˜HILLSBOROUGH DISASTER. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PJHNRF - A dusk, upward-looking view of the Britannia Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool city centre, framed by the dark lattice of bare winter tree branches. The grand, pale stone façade fills the frame, with multiple rows of sash windows and a classical upper structure that hints at the building's early twentieth-century ambition. At street level, the main entrance canopy projects out towards the viewer and carries bright blue illuminated lettering reading BRITANNIA ADELPHI HOTEL , making the location immediately recognisable and commercially searchable. Warm interior light spills from the doorway and lobby area, with chandeliers and entrance lighting creating a welcoming glow against the cooler tones of the evening sky.
The overall colour palette suggests blue hour: the sky is deepening into night while the building remains readable in ambient light. The contrast between the cool exterior and warm interior lighting gives the image a cinematic feel and communicates the idea of arrival, shelter, and city-centre hospitality. The tree branches indicate late autumn or winter, and their silhouette adds texture and atmosphere, implying a crisp evening rather than a bright summer night. There is no obvious rain sheen on visible surfaces, so conditions appear dry, although the air and colour temperature feel cold.
As an editorial subject, the Adelphi works on several angles at once: an iconic Liverpool landmark hotel, a long-running piece of city-centre hospitality infrastructure, and a building that carries the visual language of the railway and grand-travel era into the modern visitor economy. The prominent signage and lit entrance make the photograph useful for stories about Liverpool tourism, city breaks, conferences and events, nightlife districts, and the changing fortunes of large historic hotels in UK city centres. It also suits wider themes of heritage buildings still in commercial use, the experience of arriving in a city at dusk, and architecture as branding

The blue roadster with white racing stripes is seen navigating a narrow cobbled street while film crew members and onlookers watch nearby.
The vehicle was used as part of filming for Fountain of Youth, an Apple Original Films production directed by Guy Ritchie and starring John Krasinski and Natalie Portman. Liverpool has become a popular filming location for international film and television productions, with its historic architecture and adaptable city streets frequently standing in for locations worldwide.
The presence of spectators, temporary traffic control, and production staff highlights the disruption and excitement that accompanies major film shoots in urban environments. The AC Cobra, an iconic British sports car first produced in the 1960s, adds a strong visual element to the scene, combining automotive heritage with contemporary film production.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating film and television production in the UK, Apple TV+ projects, classic cars in modern settings, Liverpool as a filming location, behind-the-scenes entertainment photography, and the use of historic vehicles in contemporary cinema.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P4JY30 - Novomatic is an international gambling company based in Austria, founded by Johann Graf in 1980
Novomatic operates about 2,000 casinos and other gaming facilities in about 50 countries, many of them under the Admiral Casino brand. It also offers online gambling, and produces slot machines and other technology for the gaming industry. As of 2021, it has about 21,000 employees and annual revenue of €1.8 billion
Johann Graf initially partnered with Gerhard Brodnik in the 1970s to start Brodnik & Graf, a company that was importing pinball machines from Belgium. In 1980, Brodnik decided to quit, and Graf oriented towards producing gambling machines under the Admiral brand. A number of Admiral branded casinos were opened. Novomatic expanded globally during the decade and vastly improved the technology. It was among the first gambling equipment manufacturers to use touch screen technology.
In 2010, Novomatic expanded into online gambling business by acquiring controlling stake in London based Greentube studio. Greentube, in addition to their original content, is the main online publisher of already established Novomatic slot games. Greentube then purchased Canadian based Bluebat Games studio in 2015 to further expand its online presence.
Instant win and digital scratchcard provider, Gamevy, formed a partnership with Novomatic subsidiary, Novomatic Lottery Solutions (NLS), in November 2016. The tie-up presents NLS with an opportunity to focus on the broader lottery demographic.
This segment accounts for 56% of the company's revenues as of 2021, with the bulk of the business coming from Austria, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Eastern Europe.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PKA5FE - The unforeseen collapse of Crossfield Construction and all its subsidiaries impacted more than one of Torus Developments sites and following the successful appointment of HMS on its Burscough site, Torus is delighted to announce the continuation of its partnership with the contractor on another of its delayed schemes
The Vaults on St James Street.
At the heart of Liverpool's thriving Baltic Triangle, the 64-unit apartment complex was on track to bring a number of new, modern, affordable homes and commercial spaces to the much sought-after area in 2022. However, with Crossfield Construction going into administration, progress halted on the development in early 2022.
Despite this setback, Torus has reaffirmed its commitment to invest £9.8 million into the development and HMS will start on site imminently, completing The Vaults by Spring 2024. When finished, The Vaults will see 64 homes available for Rent to Buy, bringing affordable housing solutions directly to Liverpool's City Centre.
Mobilising the site throughout January, HMS will complete all internal works as well as a number of remedial and external works, completely transforming the stalled site and realising Torus' ambitions of supporting even more people onto the property ladder in a way that suits their budget.
Discussing HMS' latest appointment, Director of Development & Sales at Torus Developments, Steve Alcock, said:
As the sixth scheme HMS has stepped in to complete for Torus, following the collapse of a number of other contractors, I am confident that the development of The Vaults is in safe hands. The team are becoming experts at completing this type of project and delivering high quality homes in difficult circumstances. I am looking forward to seeing the site complete, following a long hiatus in work.
When handed over, The Vaults will mark HMS' completion of over 300 additional homes to us “ this is above and beyond the expected development activity

The first store, stock-photo/gotonysmith-Which.html?sortBy=relevant&pseudoid=237DAF28-A4ED-4448-8173-C0E81ABEEC6F Target=_Blank>which opened in Liverpool city centre, became the flagship of the chain of stores operating under the Lewis's name. Several stores in the chain were bought in 1991 by the company Owen Owen and continued to operate under the Lewis's brand name for several years, but after the closure of the Manchester store in 2001, only the original Liverpool store continued to trade under the Lewis's name. This store was sold in 2007 to the Vergo Retail Ltd and closed in 2010.
The first Lewis's was opened in 1856 in Liverpool by entrepreneur David Lewis, as a men's and boys' clothing store, mostly manufacturing his own stock. In 1864, Lewis's branched out into women's clothing. In the 1870s, the store expanded and added departments, including shoes in 1874, and tobacco in 1879. Also in 1879, Lewis's opened one of the world's first 'Christmas grottoes' in Lewis's Bon Marché, Church Street, Liverpool. It was named 'Christmas Fairyland'. His motto was Friends of the People, and he intended the shopping experience to be inclusive
The first Lewis's outside Liverpool opened in nearby Manchester in 1877. Another store was opened, at the suggestion of Joseph Chamberlain, on the new Corporation Street in Birmingham in 1885. The Manchester store included a full scale ballroom on the fifth floor, which was also used for exhibitions. Buying offices were also located on the fifth floor until a takeover by Liverpool-based competitor Owen Owen

The business is split into two divisions, UK and International. UK operations are conducted from its headquarters in London, alongside satellite offices in Gibraltar and Leeds, while its International business operates from its hub in Malta. The company was previously listed on the London Stock Exchange until it was acquired by Caesars Entertainment in April 2021. In July 2022, William Hill was subsequently acquired by 888 Holdings for £2.2 billion.
William Hill employs approximately 12,000 people, 8,000 of them in the UK. The company operates 1,414 betting shops.
In addition to its online sportsbook operations, the company offers online casino games, skill games, online bingo and online poker. Since the Gambling Act 2005, gaming machines have strengthened profits to counteract falling revenues in other areas. In 2009, the company moved its online betting operations to Gibraltar to reduce its taxes by millions of pounds.
In August 2010, William Hill launched a training programme for its 10,000+ workforce to combat underage gambling in its retail outlets.
In 2019, William Hill became a founding member of the Betting and Gaming Council. In July 2019, William Hill announced it was closing 700 betting shops, saying this was because of the decision three months before to reduce the maximum stake on fixed-odds betting terminals to £2. In August 2020, the company said it would close a further 119 shops that were not profitable during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, the company returned £24.5 million in furlough funds it had received from the government.
The company confirmed in 2018 that UK operations will continue to be managed from Gibraltar.

Using the Cathedral's architecture and artwork as a backdrop, the audience watch the story of Jesus unfold, starting as a young boy, and witnessing his entry into Jerusalem, his betrayal by Judas, and his trial and crucifixion.
The performance will use the vast central space of Liverpool Cathedral as a backdrop with the crucifixion scene taking place on our very own Calvary, high above the audience, on the Dulverton Bridge.
The performance combines music, script and liturgy to demonstrate what Christ's suffering and resurrection means for us today. The performance has been put together by cast, crew and musicians who are volunteers from the cathedral's congregations, choirs and young peoples' groups, and the public.'
