The Met and the Mayor of London have joined together with Safer Sounds, part of the Safer Business Network, and licensed venues across the capital to help keep people safe while enjoying a night out.
The safety initiative Ask for Angela' is being rolled out to bars, clubs and other licensed businesses across London and other cities. People who feel unsafe, vulnerable or threatened can discreetly seek help by approaching venue staff and asking them for Angela'. This code-phrase will indicate to staff that they require help with their situation and a trained member of staff will then look to support and assist them. This might be through reuniting them with a friend, seeing them to a taxi, or by calling venue security and/or the police.
Venues that support Ask for Angela' have been given Welfare And Vulnerability Engagement (WAVE) training. Delivered by the Met's licensing officers and Safer Sounds, it gives staff the ability to help customers who may be in a situation that makes them vulnerable or unsafe.
Ask for Angela' was originally developed by Lincolnshire County Council and adopted by the Met in 2016 as a localised initiative by its police licensing officers. The introduction of WAVE training in 2017 underpinned the delivery of Ask for Angela and more venues began to take on the initiative.
Organisations can receive WAVE training through the Safer Sounds Partnership or via their local licensing team. The training explores what vulnerability is, how to identify it and appropriate interventions. A range of online assets and webinars are available.

Yates is Britain's oldest pub chain. Its motto was moderation is true temperance. The founders, brothers Peter and Simon Yates, were from Preston. Peter (who lived from April 22, 18541944) was sent to Spain to learn about wine. Simon went to the US to learn about business methods.
The first Yates Wine Lodge opened in Oldham in 1884
On July 23, 1994, Yates became a public company owned by the Yates Group PLC (Yates Brothers Wine Lodges PLC). The Yates Group also owned Ha! Ha! Bar & Canteen and operated pubs under the Blob Shop and Addison's name. In the late 1990s, its share price rose to reach a high of 550p in 1998.
In June 2001, the Yates Group entered takeover talks with Luminar Group. In July 2001, it withdrew from takeover talks and saying it would instead sell off 25 of its pubs, later putting 18 of them up for sale. On November 1, 2001, the Yates Group sold eight pubs to Morrells for £4 million, with four being in Grantham, Slough, Solihull and Tunbridge Wells.
In October 2003, Yates sold its Aussie White fortified brand to Halewood International for £1 million

The statue consists of a bronze figure on a stone bench. The figure is 128 cm high, 120 cm wide, and 96 cm deep. It depicts a seated woman with a handbag on her lap, a shopping bag on her right, and a copy of the Liverpool Echo on her left. Poking from the shopping bag is a milk bottle, and on the newspaper is a sparrow and a piece of bread. The woman is looking down at the sparrow.
Steele included what he described as magical properties in his design, all hidden inside the bronze figure and representing a different facet of life. These were: a four-leaf clover (for good luck), a page from the Bible (for spiritual guidance), football boots (representing sport and fun), a comic book (for comedy and adventure), and a sonnet (for love)
On the wall behind the figure is an inscribed plaque which originally read:

This statue was sculpted and donated to the City of Liverpool
by Tommy Steele as a tribute to the Beatles.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJAFG8 - Liverpool Corporation Waterworks and its successors have provided a public water supply and sewerage and sewage treatment services to the city of Liverpool, England. In 1625 water was obtained from a single well and delivered by cart, but as the town grew, companies supplied water to homes through pipes. There were two main companies by the 1840s, but the water supply was intermittent, and there was general dissatisfaction with the service. Liverpool Corporation decided that such an important service should be provided by a public body, and sought to take over the water supply companies.
A series of Acts of Parliament were obtained, the first being the Liverpool Sanatory Act 1846, which created three key posts, the Medical Officer of Health, the Inspector of Nuisances, and the Borough Engineer. The latter post was filled by James Newlands, a visionary man who defined the role of the Borough Engineer, to be copied by many other towns and cities. He set about creating large scale maps of Liverpool, building a water-based sewerage system, making provision for bath houses, wash houses, swimming lessons, minimum sizes for rooms, paving and street lighting. The sewage was emptied into the River Mersey for the tides to take away, but he saw this as an interim measure, with a sewage treatment works being required. This part of his vision was not implemented until the 1980s.

Three days after the accident, editor Kelvin MacKenzie published an editorial which accused people of scapegoating the police, saying that the disaster occurred because thousands of fans, many without tickets tried to get into the ground just before kick-off either by forcing their way in or by blackmailing the police into opening the gates. The next day, under a front-page headline The Truth, the paper falsely accused Liverpool fans of theft and of urinating on and attacking police officers and emergency services. Conservative Member of Parliament Irvine Patnick was quoted as claiming that a group of Liverpool supporters told a police officer that they would have sex with a dead female victim
Widespread boycotts of the newspaper throughout Merseyside followed immediately and continue to this day. Boycotts include both customers refusing to purchase it, and retailers refusing to stock it. The Financial Times reported in 2019 that Merseyside sales were estimated to drop from 55,000 per day to 12,000 per day, an 80% decrease. Chris Horrie estimated in 2014 that the tabloid's owners had lost £15 million per month since the disaster, in 1989 prices. Sales also declined to a lesser degree in neighbouring parts of Cheshire and Lancashire. It was revealed in a documentary called Alexei Sayle's Liverpool, aired in September 2008, that many Liverpudlians will not even take the newspaper for free, and those who do may simply burn or tear it up. Local people often refer to the newspaper as The Scum, with campaigners believing it limited their fight for justice

Sheppard was born in Reigate and brought up in Charlwood, Surrey. His father was a solicitor, and a cousin of Tubby Clayton, founder of Toc H
Sheppard was converted to evangelical Christianity whilst at Cambridge, influenced by Donald Grey Barnhouse, and trained for the ministry at Ridley Hall, Cambridge from 1953 to 1955, where he attended the lectures of Owen Chadwick and Maurice Wiles, and was much impressed by a visiting lecturer, Donald Soper. He was involved with the ministry of E. J. H. Nash. He was ordained in 1955, serving his title as curate at St Mary's Church, Islington, but continued to play Test cricket sporadically until 1963, being the first ordained minister to do so. From 1957, he was warden of the Mayflower Family Centre in Canning Town.
Sheppard worked closely with the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool, Derek Worlock, on these issues, and was often an outspoken critic of Margaret Thatcher's government. The Queen visited both Liverpool cathedrals in 1978 to celebrate the long-delayed completion of the Anglican cathedral, and Pope John Paul II visited both cathedrals during his tour of England in 1982. The bishops worked together in the aftermath of the 1981 Toxteth riots, the 1985 Heysel stadium disaster and the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium disaster. Sheppard also worked with other church leaders in Liverpool, including the Methodist chairman John Newton. He gave the Dimbleby Lecture in 1984, on The Other Britain. Worlock was born in St John's Wood, London, on 4 February 1920, the son of Captain Harford Worlock and his wife Dora (née Hoblyn), a suffragette (or as she called herself, a suffragist). His father, a journalist turned Conservative political agent, attended Keble College, Oxford, and planned to become a priest in the Church of England
many of his forebears had been Anglican clergy. However, Harford and Dora Worlock converted to Roman Catholicism and raised their son in that faith.
Worlock was a student at St Edmund's College from 1934 to 1944. By this time the family home was in Winchester. As a small boy he was rebuked for having an answer to everything, a trait that remained. He was ordained at Old Hall Green on 3 June 1944 as a priest of the Diocese of Westminster, seminarians being exempt from military service so they could be rushed through to serve as chaplains.

Sheppard was born in Reigate and brought up in Charlwood, Surrey. His father was a solicitor, and a cousin of Tubby Clayton, founder of Toc H
Sheppard was converted to evangelical Christianity whilst at Cambridge, influenced by Donald Grey Barnhouse, and trained for the ministry at Ridley Hall, Cambridge from 1953 to 1955, where he attended the lectures of Owen Chadwick and Maurice Wiles, and was much impressed by a visiting lecturer, Donald Soper. He was involved with the ministry of E. J. H. Nash. He was ordained in 1955, serving his title as curate at St Mary's Church, Islington, but continued to play Test cricket sporadically until 1963, being the first ordained minister to do so. From 1957, he was warden of the Mayflower Family Centre in Canning Town.
Sheppard worked closely with the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool, Derek Worlock, on these issues, and was often an outspoken critic of Margaret Thatcher's government. The Queen visited both Liverpool cathedrals in 1978 to celebrate the long-delayed completion of the Anglican cathedral, and Pope John Paul II visited both cathedrals during his tour of England in 1982. The bishops worked together in the aftermath of the 1981 Toxteth riots, the 1985 Heysel stadium disaster and the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium disaster. Sheppard also worked with other church leaders in Liverpool, including the Methodist chairman John Newton. He gave the Dimbleby Lecture in 1984, on The Other Britain. Worlock was born in St John's Wood, London, on 4 February 1920, the son of Captain Harford Worlock and his wife Dora (née Hoblyn), a suffragette (or as she called herself, a suffragist). His father, a journalist turned Conservative political agent, attended Keble College, Oxford, and planned to become a priest in the Church of England
many of his forebears had been Anglican clergy. However, Harford and Dora Worlock converted to Roman Catholicism and raised their son in that faith.
Worlock was a student at St Edmund's College from 1934 to 1944. By this time the family home was in Winchester. As a small boy he was rebuked for having an answer to everything, a trait that remained. He was ordained at Old Hall Green on 3 June 1944 as a priest of the Diocese of Westminster, seminarians being exempt from military service so they could be rushed through to serve as chaplains.

This year's parade is the first in 71 years to take place with a king as the monarch. Special badges have been commissioned to celebrate the King's Coronation which took place in May.
Orange parades will take place in Liverpool, Dingle and Southport. The main parades will move off from Netherfield Road and Corn Street in the Dingle around 9am on Wednesday morning.
The parades will make their way to the city centre and meet around the vicinity of Lime Street to board buses to Southport before forming up on London Street, Southport at approximately 11.15am. As per previous years, upon arriving in Southport, Liverpool parade members will be joined by others from all over England including Bootle, Manchester, Sunderland, London, Corby, Birmingham, Sussex and many more locations.
Senior officers from Scotland and Northern Ireland will also join the parade to celebrate the day which will see approximately 3,000 to 4,000 people on the streets of Southport. There is always a carnival atmosphere at the event.

This striking sculpture of the young Queen Victoria riding side-saddle was commissioned to match the one of Prince Albert already completed by Thornycroft and unveiled in 1866. The Queen's hat is generously plumed, and, appropriately for this position outside St George's Hall, she bears the St. George's riband as a sash across her breast. The fine detail of the statue is most easily seen from below in the embroidered crown and scrolling, as well as the fringe, of the ceremonial saddle-blanket. In a description from the Art Journal, the horse is seen as full of impatient action, which tells on the sway of the figure
an effect difficult to express well in sculpture (qtd. in Cavanagh 95). The Queen holds what looks like a small sceptre, but is actually the handle of a riding crop, the rest of which has been lost. The drape of her voluminous skirt can be seen in the right-hand profile.
According to Bob Speel, this was the piece that made [Thomas Thornycroft's] name. Compare it with his equestrian statuette of the Queen from 1853.

The Hillsborough monument was comissioned by the Hillsborough Justice Campaign and sculpted by Tom Murphy.
Background: A young girl asked her Father, where is the Hillsborough Memorial? She was told: There is one in Anfield.' She said: Why can't we have one in the city centre for everyone to see.' This simple question was the catalyst for this monument
The monument is circular with a raised design in low relief. The imagery shows an imaginary place,which is meant to guide our thoughts of remembrance and all that has happened since the tragedy
The people depicted in the design are the guardians of the memory', or people like us' Their purpose is symbolic and other figures represent justice, hope and loss. The setting is a beautiful and quiet place, which may help us to think about the characters and individual personalities of those who died. The people who passed away are represented by the birds who fly freely throughout the work.
We reflect and empathise with those who died while considering the people they were, and might have been, were it not for the disaster
Description of the raised relief on the maquette
The design begins with two large tablets that list the names those who died. A dedication and information plaque is situated between the tablets of names with a poem, written especially for the moument, by David Charters (journalist and author). Immediately above the central dedication is a wreath of spring flowers. This reminds us of the season and number of victims who died. A Liver Bird stands guard. Below the information plaque is a rail of football scarves from differing clubs signifying the way football fans responded nationally in the days after the disaster. Around the top rim of the monument is the proclamation: HILLSBOROUGH DISASTER. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.'.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine buskers have been robbed of their spots, so their music has had to go underground.
But it's not just their music that has been taken, it is also their livelihoods. So this Eurovision, Ketchum UK has created a campaign for buskers from Liverpool to give up their usual spots along the Merseyrail network to Ukrainian musicians, giving them the chance to perform for audiences and keep the conversation alive about this unjust war.
Travellers going through the four biggest stations
Liverpool Central, Lime Street, Moorfields and James Street will be able to enjoy authentic Ukrainian busking music.
Each busking spot has a speaker streaming the artists music and a QR code for passers-by to scan to find out more about the musicians' story, videos about them and to donate to the cause.
All proceeds raised will go directly to Supplies for Ukraine C.I.C., who are working to provide essential, lifesaving equipment to civilians and volunteers on the front lines in Ukraine.
There is an accompanying outdoor poster campaign across the Merseyrail network and all tracks are streamed as a playlist on Spotify.

Frink kept up a hectic pace of sculpting and exhibiting until early 1991, when an operation for cancer of the oesophagus caused an enforced break. However, short weeks later Frink was again creating sculptures and preparing for solo exhibitions. In September, she underwent further surgery. Again, Frink did not let this hold her back, proceeding with a planned trip for exhibitions to New Orleans, Louisiana, and New York City. The exhibitions were a success, but Frink's health was clearly deteriorating. Despite this, she was working on a colossal statue, Risen Christ, for Liverpool Cathedral. This sculpture would prove to be her last
just one week after its installation, Frink died from cancer on 18 April 1993, aged 62, in Blandford Forum, Dorset. The building was constructed as Hope Hall, a dissenters' chapel built in 1837. In 1841 it became a church dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist. This became a public concert hall in 1853. In 1912 the hall was turned into Hope Hall Cinema, which continued serving this purpose until it closed in 1963. Prior to its closure the hall had become a meeting place for local artists, poets, folk musicians, and sculptors, including Arthur Dooley, Roger McGough, and Adrian Henri, forming what became known as the Liverpool Scene. This group decided that the building would be suitable for use as a theatre and in September 1964 the Everyman Theatre was opened by Martin Jenkins, Peter James and Terry Hands
In July 2011 the theatre closed to be completely rebuilt. The last major production was Macbeth, starring David Morrissey and Julia Ford, which closed on 11 June. This was followed by performances from Roger McGough and Brian Patten, and by the local pop band Deaf School. The final closure event took place on 2 July. From 28 July contents of the theatre, including seats and benches from the theatre, and pillars from the original Hope Hall, were available for purchase by auction.
The Everyman reopened in February 2014.[8] In October 2014, the Stirling Prize from the Royal Institute of British Architects for the best British building of the year was awarded to Haworth Tompkins for their work on the new Everyman

A 15-ft high, wood and steel sculpture of a crucifixion by Charles Lutyens, first seen in his exhibition of work, Being in the World, at St Paul's Church, Bow Common, London has recently been installed in Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral.
Called Outraged Christ, this was a spontaneous work it wasn't commissioned created intermittently over a number of years. With the intent of having an encounter with this Man' and with the reality of the event taking place, the sculpture was driven by such questions as Who was this Man?, What did He look like? and Why was this crucifixion remembered for 2,000 years over and above the countless other crucifixions that have taken place? It is a moving and powerful image which, in its making, disclosed itself to Charles as an Outraged Christ. Deeply engaged with this extraordinary event, Charles thought, If the resurrection happened, then was it not already inherent in the crucifixion?
The Grade II-listed St Paul's Church, designed by architects Robert Maguire and Keith Murray and consecrated in 1964, was recently voted Best modern church in Great Britain. It also contains the stunning 800-sq ft mosaic mural, also by Charles, called Angels of the Heavenly Host, the largest single artist-created mosaic mural in the British Isles. Asked by the architects to provide a design for this work I said, at the time, Sorry, it is not possible for me to design an angel, angels appear', recalls Charles. But, incredibly, the architects then said, All right, appear us an angel'. Charles recently gave a talk, in situ, for English Heritage about the mural and its making.

In contrast, Aldi is currently recruiting for about 100 job opportunities at its head office in Atherstone, Warwickshire, not including warehouse roles.

Somewhat surprisingly, this is not so with The Dispensary. It sprang up just a decade ago from the shell of an old man's boozer, The Grapes, on the corner of Rapid Hardware Street and Oldham Street in an area that is quietly renowned as a real booze and curry lovers' jackpot.
Pharmaceutical items, fixtures and fittings from old chemist shops, Liverpool University and the Liverpool Pharmaceutical Society abound in an effort to give it a traditional pub atmosphere and visually evoke a Victorian dispensary. It certainly did the trick for real-ale lovers CAMRA who voted it English Heritage pub refurbishment of the year 2000 and also Merseyside pub of the year.
Cains tenants Pauline Keady-Williams and husband Dave run The Dispensary, prescribing a cure-all for the world's ills in the shape of medicine on tap from the Upper Stanhope Street brewery, this week finding itself in dire financial straits with administrators being called in this week.
Why go there?
It serves arguably the best beer in town, if they do say so themselves, although Dominic Hornsby, from the nearby Fly In The Loaf, would doubtless disagree.
Who goes there?
The Dispensary's main allure seems to be for chaps, in there to either marvel at their chosen pint in solitude (I come here to hide from the wife, one un-pictured punter told us) or to philosophise in small huddles about the state of the world, occasionally all pausing to marvel at that pint again.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M95NF8 - St George's Hall is a building on St George's Place, opposite Lime Street railway station in the centre of Liverpool, England. Opened in 1854, it is a Neoclassical building which contains concert halls and law courts, and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. On the east side of the hall, between it and the railway station, is St George's Plateau and on the west side are St John's Gardens. The hall is included in the William Brown Street conservation area.
In 1969 the architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner expressed his opinion that it is one of the finest neo-Grecian buildings in the world, although the building is known for its use of Roman sources as well as Greek. In 2004, the hall and its surrounding area were recognised as part of Liverpool's World Heritage Site until its revocation of World Heritage status in 2021. The Liverpool Register Office and Coroner's Court have been based in the hall since 2012.
In 1838 the foundation stone was laid to commemorate the coronation of Queen Victoria.
A competition was announced on 5 March 1839 via an advertisement in The Times to design the hall, first prize was 250 guineas, second prize 150 guineas. By July more than eighty entries had been received, and the competition was won by Harvey Lonsdale Elmes, a London architect aged 25 years, the second prize went to George Alexander of London.
Elmes died in 1847 and the work was continued by John Weightman, Corporation Surveyor, and Robert Rawlinson, structural engineer, until in 1851 Charles Cockerell was appointed architect. Cockerell was largely responsible for the decoration of the interiors. The eventual cost of the building exceeded £300,000[11] (roughly equivalent to £33,000,000 in 2019). During the 2000s a major restoration of the hall took place costing £23m and it was officially reopened on 23 April 2007 by Prince Charles. The magnificent sculpture of the exterior was by William Grinsell Nicholl.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MB4F3F - The entrance gates to the Sailors' Home were elaborate decorative pieces of ironwork which served the dual purpose of protecting the Savings Bank and keeping out seamen who might wish to gain entry to the Home after the strict 10 pm curfew.
By April 1852 the lower sections of the gates had been installed, decorated with a combination of elements from the interior balconies
four great panels of rope-work with central mermaid and trident figures identical to those inside. The two outer panels were fixed whilst the two centre sections rolled behind them on rails where they were hidden from sight while the Home was open for business.
The iron-work of the lower gates, produced a solid, intimidating aspect compared with the much lighter appearance of the balcony railings. The huge mass of iron made an impassable barrier but also a massive weight and it would have taken some effort to slide the gates open and close.

In the Annals of the Sailors' Home, printed in the Home's annual report for the year 1935, against the year 1907 was the following entry: November - Police Officer Locke killed through front gate falling upon him.
Early on the morning of Sunday 24 November, nearly an hour after midnight, Police constable number 324A, Brownlow Locke, of the Liverpool City Constabulary, met his death in a very strange and unexpected manner.
1951: The Gates Move to Their New Home in Sandwell
As part of the repair to War Damage following the Liverpool Blitz it was decided to remove the gates. On 25 March 1948 W & T Avery who had swallowed-up Pooley's and Sons were offered the gates by the Sailors' Home Committee. On 18 May 1949 Avery's made an offer of 50 guineas for the gates, which was accepted on 3 May. 1951.
The home was demolished between 1974-1975. After refurbishment at Barr & Grosvenor Ltd's foundry Wolverhampton, the gates were returned to the Liverpool One shopping developmet

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MGPDP7 - Blacklers was a large department store on the corner of Elliot Street and Great Charlotte Street in Liverpool, England. The store was famous for its lavish Christmas grotto and its rocking horse, Blackie, which is now on display in the Museum of Liverpool. The store, which at its peak employed a thousand people, also has connections to The Beatles: George Harrison worked as an apprentice electrician at Blacklers in 1959, and Pete Best's mother Mona bought his drum kit from the Blacklers music department.
Blacklers was founded by partners Richard John Blackler and A.B. Wallis in the early twentieth century. Blackler died in 1919 and was succeeded as a partner in the business by his wife Margaret.
Despite the building being severely damaged in The Blitz of May 1941 during World War II, the business survived. Temporary outlets were created in Bold Street and Church Street and the first part of the new store opened on 29 March 1953.
Margaret Blackler died in 1957 without children, at which point the store became the property of several individuals, of which the major shareholder was the sportswoman Vera Kingston (Margaret's god-daughter). In 1983 following Vera's death the store was sold on once again, and all links to the original owners disappeared. The store remained open only a few years more, closing in April 1988.
The site now includes a Wetherspoons chain pub, named Richard John Blackler in honour of the store's founder.

Calls have been made for the company to lose its contract for the service.
Matthew Golton, managing director of Transpennine, told the BBC the operator had a recovery plan to do better.
The government has previously said action will be taken if the company can't be turned round.

The main door in the centre of the central block has Ionic columns with a broken pediment containing a cartouche of the arms of Liverpool. Each wing has three square-headed doors approached by steps. The wall, railings and gate piers on School Lane are also listed at Grade I.
The 2005-2008 renovation at a cost of £14 million also included a new 2250 square metre extension, the architects being BIQ Architecten. The architects found that there were 32 different floor levels in the old building. They carried out much structural change to produce exhibition areas with better accessibility. The new extension is built mainly in brick to link with the old building, although it has a copper roof and more modern materials internally. The new wing houses a flexible performance area and four art galleries. In addition, the complex provides studios for artists and craftspeople, a restaurant and a café and a number of retail outlets

Liverpool has been stripped of its coveted world heritage status after Unesco blamed years of development for an irreversible loss to the historic value of its Victorian docks.
The UN's heritage body concluded at a meeting in China on Wednesday that the outstanding universal value of Liverpool's waterfront had been destroyed by new buildings, including Everton football club's new £500m stadium.
The decision is a humiliating blow for the city and gives Liverpool the ignominious distinction of being only the third place to lose the status in nearly 50 years. The other delisted sites were Oman's Arabian Oryx Sanctuary in 2007 and the Dresden Elbe valley in Germany in 2009.
Liverpool has enjoyed world heritage status since 2004 placing it alongside the Taj Mahal and Great Wall of China as recognition for its role as a major trading power during the British empire and the architectural beauty of its waterfront.
The threat of being delisted has hung over Liverpool since 2012 as Unesco warned that development had significantly changed the city's skyline and was destroying the heritage value of its waterfront.
The decision was announced by Tian Xuejun, the chair of the Unesco world heritage committee, at a virtual conference hosted in China on Wednesday.
The UN agency said development such as Liverpool Waters, a £5.5bn project by Peel Group to transform previously disused land, had led to a serious deterioration and irreversible loss to the area's outstanding universal value along with significant loss to its authenticity and integrity.
It said that as a result of these projects the waterfront had deteriorated to the extent that it has lost characteristics that led to its inclusion on the world heritage list in 2004.

History
Maybe was launched in 1933 in Amsterdam. After World War II she underwent a complete refit with a new rig after and took part in the first ever Tall Ships Race in 1956. She has sailed mainly around the Mediterranean and in the 70s regularly crossed the Atlantic between the West Indies and the Mediterranean. In the 80s she also sailed through the Panama Canal and up the east coast of the USA to Canada.
Maybe was sold to the present owners in 1989 and underwent another complete restoration, after which she returned to sailing in 2007.
Ship
Maybe is a Dutch wooden sailing ketch launched in 1933 and designed for round the world cruising. After a complete restoration the Ship has returned to the Tall Ships Races recently. She has a full schedule of sailing in Tall Ships events and school Sail Training trips. She has sailed in Tall Ships Races from the Baltic to the Mediterranean and is a big competitor in her class. With small changes to her rigging and sails she gets faster and faster each year.Maybe offers dedicated youth sailing trips, as well as journeys for all ages.

History
Housed in a converted warehouse within the Albert Dock on Liverpool's waterfront, the gallery was opened on 24 May 1988 by Prince Charles, an event covered by BBC Two television. The original conversion was done by James Stirling but the building was given a major refurbishment in 1998 to create additional gallery space.
In 2007, the foyer area was redesigned by architects Arca to create an updated appearance and better proportions, as well as to improve visitor handling. The gallery cafe was also redesigned by Peter Blake and Liverpool-based architects, Architectural Emporium. The centrepiece of the space is a new timber desk with an undulating orange fascia, which links to the retained colour scheme of the original conversion work by Stirling. A colour-changing wall acts as a backdrop to the simplified brick volume, visible from across Albert Dock. Behind the scenes, Arca also made alterations to the hospitality, cloakroom, events and education areas.

History
Bold Street was originally laid out as a ropewalk
a long thin area of land used in the manufacture of rope (the area is now known as 'Rope Walks'). They used to measure the rope from the top of Bold Street to the bottom because it was the standard length needed for sailing ships. It was laid out for residences around 1780 and named after Jonas Bold, a noted sugar trader and banker. In 1802 Bold became Mayor of Liverpool.
Merchants that worked on the docks needed houses close by. Therefore, houses were constructed in Hanover Street first, followed by Duke Street and then Bold Street. The fields that were in the area earlier were also developed quickly into houses. Although there had been port-related industrial activity in the area, with roperies occupying the site of what is now Bold Street to supply the sailing ships, this intensified along with a demand for residential properties so that the merchants could be located close to their business interests.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P4JXRR - The Liverpool Playhouse is a theatre in Williamson Square in the city of Liverpool, England. It originated in 1866 as a music hall, and in 1911 developed into a repertory theatre. As such it nurtured the early careers of many actors and actresses, some of whom went on to achieve national and international reputations. Architectural changes have been made to the building over the years, the latest being in 1968 when a modern-style extension was added to the north of the theatre. In 1999 a trust was formed, joining the management of the Playhouse with that of the Everyman Theatre.
The present theatre on the site was designed by Edward Davies, and opened in 1866. It replaced an earlier theatre called the Star Concert Hall. The present theatre was originally named the Star Music Hall
The exterior of the older part of the theatre is stuccoed, and it has a slate roof. Its entrance front faces Williamson Square. It has seven bays and is in three storeys. The central three bays project forward and are surmounted by a broken pediment. On the ground floor the central bays contain three entrances, separated by pillars, which lead to a recessed porch. Over each entrance is an architrave containing a fanlight.
The newer section is constructed in concrete, and largely faced by glass. On the ground floor are entrance doors. Above this, the building is based around three cylinders. The largest of these starts at the first floor and rises through two storeys. It is cantilevered from a central column. To the left is a smaller cylinder, cantilevered from a separate column, interlocking with the larger cylinder. Inside the whole is a hollow column containing the stairs

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHW8DG - David Lewis founded a small shop selling men's and boy's clothing in 1856. The sale of women's clothes began in 1864, and by the 1870s Lewis's Department Store was in full swing. There were sections for shoes and tobacco in addition to clothing.
Branches were opened in other cities, beginning with Manchester in 1877. Birmingham, Sheffield and Leicester followed soon after.
The building burnt down in the infamous fire of 1886, and was heavily bombed by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. Nevertheless, it was rebuilt each time, and was refurbished in 1957. This version included the statue Liverpool Resurgent', symbolising the city's renewed vigour following the horrors of the recent conflict.
Lewis's Department Store the fifth floor
The fifth floor of Lewis's has taken on an almost mythical status. In the store's heyday, the 1950s, the fifth floor was the place to dine in the self-service cafeteria or the Red Rose restaurant. You could also get your hair done in the salon.
A large mural decorated the walls, but this and the other features were hidden from the public in the 1980s. The floor was closed, and remained so until 2010 when it became the focus of an exhibition at the National Conservation Centre.
Gerald de Courcy Fraser designed the building in 1947 while, Fraser, Sons and Geary carried out construction. It is built from a steel frame with a Portland stone façade.
There are several classical influences in the building. Red granite columns are topped with Ionic capitals, while the columns on the fourth floor are Tuscan in style. A two-storey colonnade above the corner entrance have Doric-style half columns.
Liverpool Resurgent
The statue Liverpool Resurgent is accompanied by relief panels depicting scenes of childhood. The figures in the panels are modelled on the sculptor Jacob Epstein's own children and grandchildren. These represent the younger generation which Liverpool was being rebuilt for.

Duncan was born and raised in Liverpool before attending Edinburgh University where he qualified as a medical doctor. The pub, dating back to 1901, was built to house Pearl Insurance and is well known for its elaborately tiled interior. Now, in honour of its namesake, it houses an authentic Victorian pharmacy cabinet.

Making a distinctive appearance in the graveyard of St Andrew's Church, Rodney Street, Liverpool is the 15 foot high pyramidal tomb of the British civil engineer and civil engineering contractor, William Mackenzie.
The tomb lies in what is reputed to be one of the most haunted areas of Liverpool city.
Born near Nelson, Lancashire in 1794 and the eldest of the 11 children, Mackenzie started his career as an apprentice weaver but changed to civil engineering.
He went on to make his fortune working as engineer on canal and railway projects, latterly working on new railway lines in France, Spain, the Italian states and Belgium.
Mackenzie died in 1851, leaving most of his £341,848 estate to his brother Edward, who erected this pyramid shaped monument at the grave in 1868
In the vault beneath lie the remains of William Mackenzie of Newbie, Dumfriesshire, Esquire who died 29th October 1851 aged 57 years. Also, Mary his wife, who died 19th December 1838 aged 48 years and Sarah, his second wife who died 9th December 1867 aged 60 years. A wonderfully improbable local legend tells the story of how McKenzie was supposedly entombed seated at a table with a winning hand of cards in his bony fingers.
The yarn insists that as an inveterate gambler, he bet and lost his soul in a game of poker with the Devil and figured that if he was never buried, Satan could never claim his prize.

He was buried in St Andrew's Church, Rodney Street, Liverpool in 1851. A pyramid-shaped monument was erected at the grave by his brother Edward in 1868. William's estate amounted to £341,848, almost all of which was left to his youngest brother, Edward. He had no children. The Diary of William Mackenzie, published by Thomas Telford Publishing in 2000, is a full transcription of Mackenzie's handwritten diaries, and it provides insight into his busy life.
The inscription proves that MacKenzie was buried beneath (not entombed inside) the pyramid and that the monument itself was not erected until 16 years after his demise. Even so, the legend of his upright interment continues to be told and believed by many.

The disaster occurred at a football match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. Ninety-seven Liverpool supporters were crushed to death, and several hundred others were injured, due to negligence by the South Yorkshire Police. On 19 April 1989, four days after the incident, The Sun published a front-page story with the headline The Truth containing a number of falsehoods alleging that Liverpool supporters were responsible for the accident.
Though other newspapers reported stories critical of the fans, The Sun's repetition of unreliable claims as fact and position on the incident in the aftermath of the event led to outrage amongst Liverpudlians. From 1993 to 2012, editor Kelvin MacKenzie, who was in charge of many of the publication decisions, gave conflicting comments on whether he was sorry for the front-page story and said that his mistake was in trusting a Conservative Member of ParliamentIrvine Patnick, who was quoted in the piece. The Sun issued apologies in 2004, after Wayne Rooney was criticised for giving exclusive interviews to the paper, in 2012, under the headline The Real Truth, and in 2016, on a page 89 story in the aftermath of a second governmental inquest that concluded fans were unlawfully killed in the disaster.
After a protest in Kirkby in which women burned copies of the newspaper, The Sun (referred to as The S*n or The Scum) was widely boycotted in Merseyside. Sales have been estimated to have dropped from 55,000 per day in the region to 12,000 in 2019. Campaigns against the newspaper including Total Eclipse of the Sun and Shun the Sun first aimed to decrease purchases of the tabloid, and then supply of it by retailers. William Joyce began in the North Shropshire village of Cockshutt making longcase clocks. The family business was handed down from father to son and in 1790 moved to High Street, Whitchurch, Shropshire. In 1834 Thomas Joyce made large clocks for local churches and public buildings. In 1849 the company copied the Big Ben escapement designed by Lord Grimthorpe. J. B. Joyce also installed synchronous electric clocks in a number of railway stations, including Liverpool's Lime Street Station, Aberystwyth in Wales, and Carnforth in Lancashire. In 1904 J. B. Joyce moved to Station Road, Whitchurch. John Edgar Howard Smith (19071983), a former managing director of Smith of Derby Group, designed the first and subsequent synchronous electric movements for J. B. Joyce, and their associated electro-mechanical bell striking units.
In 1964, Norman Joyce, the last member of the Joyce family, retired and sold the company to Smith of Derby. During the 1970s, many of the mechanical clocks were changed to use the electric motors made by the Smith parent company.

At the heart of Liverpool's thriving Baltic Triangle, the 64-unit apartment complex was on track to bring a number of new, modern, affordable homes and commercial spaces to the much sought-after area in 2022. However, with Crossfield Construction going into administration, progress halted on the development in early 2022.
Despite this setback, Torus has reaffirmed its commitment to invest £9.8 million into the development and HMS will start on site imminently, completing The Vaults by Spring 2024. When finished, The Vaults will see 64 homes available for Rent to Buy, bringing affordable housing solutions directly to Liverpool's City Centre.
Mobilising the site throughout January, HMS will complete all internal works as well as a number of remedial and external works, completely transforming the stalled site and realising Torus' ambitions of supporting even more people onto the property ladder in a way that suits their budget.
Discussing HMS' latest appointment, Director of Development & Sales at Torus Developments, Steve Alcock, said:
As the sixth scheme HMS has stepped in to complete for Torus, following the collapse of a number of other contractors, I am confident that the development of The Vaults is in safe hands. The owners of Lewis's have gone into administration many times over the years, including 1991. The first store, which opened in Liverpool city centre, became the flagship of the chain of stores operating under the Lewis's name. Several stores in the chain were bought in 1991 by the company Owen Owen and continued to operate under the Lewis's brand name for several years, but after the closure of the Manchester store in 2001, only the original Liverpool store continued to trade under the Lewis's name. This store was sold in 2007 to the Vergo Retail Ltd and closed in 2010.
The first Lewis's was opened in 1856 in Liverpool by entrepreneur David Lewis, as a men's and boys' clothing store, mostly manufacturing his own stock. In 1864, Lewis's branched out into women's clothing. In the 1870s, the store expanded and added departments, including shoes in 1874, and tobacco in 1879. The setting is a beautiful and quiet place, which may help us to think about the characters and individual personalities of those who died. The people who passed away are represented by the birds who fly freely throughout the work.

The design begins with two large tablets that list the names those who died. A dedication and information plaque is situated between the tablets of names with a poem, written especially for the moument, by David Charters (journalist and author). Immediately above the central dedication is a wreath of spring flowers. This reminds us of the season and number of victims who died. A Liver Bird stands guard. Below the information plaque is a rail of football scarves from differing clubs signifying the way football fans responded nationally in the days after the disaster. Around the top rim of the monument is the proclamation: HILLSBOROUGH DISASTER. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.'.

During November 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the InterCity West Coast franchise would be replaced by the West Coast Partnership (WCP). In August 2019, the DfT awarded the WCP franchise to the First Trenitalia consortium. On 8 December 2019, Avanti West Coast took over operations from the prior operating company Virgin Trains, which had run the franchise since 1997. Originally, the franchise was initially scheduled to run until March 2030, and had also been set to operate the initial High Speed 2 services from 2026.
