Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJRJ - This photograph shows exterior signage on the former Golden Lion Inn, a traditional public house located on Knutsford Road in Warrington, Cheshire. The red brick building, with arched detailing and raised gold lettering, reflects the late Victorian style commonly used for urban and roadside pubs serving growing industrial towns in north west England.
For many years, the Golden Lion Inn formed part of Warrington's local pub network, serving nearby residential streets and acting as a social meeting place for the surrounding community. Like many traditional pubs across the UK, it eventually closed amid changing drinking habits, rising operating costs, and pressure on older licensed premises that were no longer commercially viable.
Following closure, the building was redeveloped into residential flats, reflecting a wider national trend in which former pubs are converted to housing rather than reopened as licensed venues. While the internal use has changed, much of the external character has been retained, with original brickwork and pub signage still visible, allowing the building's former role to remain legible within the streetscape.
Taken in daylight, the image documents both architectural detail and social change. It serves as a visual record of pub closures in Britain and the adaptive reuse of historic buildings, illustrating how everyday community landmarks are increasingly absorbed into housing-led redevelopment while retaining traces of their original identity. The Golden Lion on Knutsford Road, Latchford, Warrington (WA4 1AB) has roots that run back well before its late twentieth-century local reputation. Local history writing referenced by MyWarrington describes a Golden Lion Tavern as a recognised roadside marker on the old Knutsford Road route, used as one end of a long-standing agreement connected with tolls and responsibility for maintaining the highway between the Golden Lion and Black Bear Bridge, which strongly suggests it was already established

OPENING an asylum centre at a Warrington hotel without consulting residents was 'simply not acceptable'.
Warrington South MP Andy Carter raised his concerns in the House of Commons on Monday afternoon during an urgent debate on the migrant crisis.
He was among a large number of MPs grilling immigration minister Robert Jenrick on the fall out of the problems at the Manston Migrant Centre in Kent.
Thousands of migrants have been placed in temporary accomodation since then to relieve the pressure Parliament was told.
Mr Carter said on Thursday he was notified by the Home Office that the Fir Grove hotel in his Warrington South constituency would 'become an asylum centre the following day' and said no talks were held with the council.
He added: It's in the middle of a residential area, less than 200 yards from a primary school.
I'm sure (Mr Jenrick) would agree with me that it's simply not acceptable for the Home Office to steamroll ahead on a decision like this without the necessary consultation with local residents.
After Conservative former minister Paul Maynard raised concerns about the use of a hotel in his Blackpool North and Cleveleys constituency, Mr Jenrick said: I appreciate that Blackpool is one of those areas that has borne a disproportionate burden from this issue for a long time.
So if there is a way we can ensure that individuals are dispersed from Blackpool more swiftly than other parts of the country, then I'd be happy to look into that.
Mr Jenrick added 'deterrence' has to be part of the UK's approach, suggesting good-quality hotels could act as a 'pull factor' for people thinking of crossing the Channel.
The population at the Manston Migrant Processing Centre is back below 1,600 with 'over 2,300 people being placed in onward accommodation', Mr Jenrick said.

An angry Warrington South MP Andy Carter says he is going to raise the Home Office decision to allow asylum seekers at the Fir Grove Hotel at Grappenhall in parliament in the coming week.
Mr Carter yesterday held a number of meetings to understand the legal options available to Warrington Borough Council, which also opposes the decision.
He said: I held a number of meetings yesterday to understand the legal options available to the Council in terms of challenging decisions taken by the owners of the hotel and to gain more information from the Home Office and their plans for this site.
In discussions with Home Office officials, I have been advised that the cohort planned for accommodation this site will be families with children. Prior to arriving in Warrington the refugees will have been processed at centres elsewhere. The hotel has 54 rooms and a maximum occupancy of 79 guests in total.
The advice received from Kings Counsel was that an immediate legal challenge to this decision to use this site for Asylum Seekers would be unlikely to succeed, not least due the incredibly short timescales before the asylum seekers arrive in Warrington and the location of the owners of the site. Other local authorities are however pursuing legal routes related to planning legislation and a change of use requirements, which I am monitoring.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JD0MFP - Lymm and Thelwall to be moved from Warrington South to Tatton electoral ward
Lymm and Thelwall look set to become part of the Tatton constituency under a shakeup of England's electoral map.
The Boundary Commission for England has revealed a raft of proposed changes across the country, with just under 10 per cent of existing constituencies remaining unchanged.
In Warrington, the most drastic changes can be found in Warrington South ? which will lose Lymm and Thelwall to Tatton, currently held by Tory MP Esther McVey.
Warrington North is almost entirely unchanged, save for minor changes which will see the Westbrook Centre moved to Warrington South and part of Chetham Court at Winwick Quay ? home to businesses including Tenpin Warrington, formerly LA Bowl ? switched in the opposite direction.
Proposals are due to be implemented in 2023, and aim to ensure that each constituency has roughly the same number of voters

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2J92PEH - On his removal to Grappenhall in 1855, Thomas Leah an Independent Methodist Lay Preacher and a few fellow believers felt led to begin a new Church. Leah who had been converted to the Christian faith at a Camp Meeting at Cherry Lane, Lymm, in 1828, started the Church in a room above a bake house on Knutsford Road. The bake house stood behind what is today a modern detached house which is the third property from the junction of Knutsford and Chester Roads.
For 26 years the small fellowship went from strength to strength. By 1880 it became clear that the room above the bake house was no longer large enough. The Church Leaders decided to buy a plot of land on Chester Road and to erect a new Church for the expanding congregation. After some local opposition the Church was opened in 1881. The building today is part of a private residence between Euclid Avenue and Clarence Road.
Despite the Independent Methodists in Grappenhall having a new church building the congregation began a period of decline. The situation was reported to the Warrington Circuit of Independent Methodist Churches who appointed Robert Henshall and Arthur Jolley to endeavour to revive and resuscitate the Christian Cause at Grappenhall
Church Leaders decided to look for a new plot of land on which to build a larger building. Land in the Cross Lane area of Grappenhall was sought. After much negotiation land was bought on the corner of Knutsford Road and Knutsford Old Road. The new Church building opened in 1913 was located just outside the Parish of Grappenhall in what was then known as 'Latchford Without' and today is part of Stockton Heath Parish.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D8D633 - In the 1990s several surveys were undertaken at St Mary's church, highlighting areas of structural instability and poor maintenance. The congregation had also fallen to around 400. The bishop decided to merge the parish with that of St Augustine
that parish had been erected in 1929 to cater for new residential areas in Westy, but the church had been closed and demolished in 2005. A new church would be built to serve the new parish and old St Mary's would be demolished. However, the old church was listed in 2005, and its future remains unresolved.
The new church was built at Latchford, on a site on Knutsford Road equidistant between the two former parish churches. In June 2008 the first designs, by David Horne of Hulme Upright Manning, were displayed, and the comments of the community carefully considered in the final design and decoration of the church. The new church opened in 2010, and may be the first newly-built Catholic church to be dedicated to Blessed John Henry Newman - More at https://taking-stock.org.uk/building/blessed-john-henry-newman-latchford/

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D9H1A3 - The Environment Agency (EA) is a non-departmental public body, established in 1995 and sponsored by the United Kingdom government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), with responsibilities relating to the protection and enhancement of the environment in England
The EA provides Flood and coastal risk management, Activities to reduce likelihood of flooding
Activities to reduce consequences of flooding, Environment and business, Climate change, Air quality, Land quality, Water quality, Water resources, Fishing, Navigation, Other marine responsibilities, Equipment and Fleet, Consultation and influencing, Advice to Government, Regional organisation
The Environment Agency's remit covers almost the whole of England, about 13 million hectares of land, 22,000 miles (35,000 km) of river and 3,100 miles (5,000 km) of coastline seawards to the three-mile limit which includes 2 million hectares of coastal waters. In a sharing arrangement with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), it also exercises some of its functions over parts of the catchments of the River Tweed and the Border Esk which are, for the most part, in Scotland. Similarly, in an arrangement with NRW, political and operational areas are not coterminus. NRW staff exercise responsibility for parts of the River Dee (Wales) in England and EA staff exercise operational responsibility for those parts of the River Severn catchment in Wales.
Structure
The Environment Agency employs around 11,200 staff. It is organised into eight directorates that report to the chief executive. There are two policy and process directorates. One deals with Flood and Coastal Risk Management and the other with Environment and Business. These are backed up by the Evidence directorate. The fourth directorate is a single Operations delivery unit, responsible for national services, and line management of all the Regional and Area staff.
The remaining directorates are central shared service groups

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy R9GTEP - A recumbent bicycle is a bicycle that places the rider in a laid-back reclining position. Most recumbent riders choose this type of design for ergonomic reasons: the rider's weight is distributed comfortably over a larger area, supported by back and buttocks. On a traditional upright bicycle, the body weight rests entirely on a small portion of the sitting bones, the feet, and the hands.
Most recumbent models also have an aerodynamic advantage
the reclined, legs-forward position of the rider's body presents a smaller frontal profile. A recumbent holds the world speed record for a bicycle, and they were banned from racing under the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) in 1934, and now race under the banner of the World Human Powered Vehicle Association (WHPVA) and International Human Powered Vehicle Association (IHPVA).
Recumbents are available in a wide range of configurations, including: long to short wheelbase
large, small, or a mix of wheel sizes
overseat, underseat, or no-hands steering
and rear wheel or front wheel drive. A variant with three wheels is a recumbent tricycle.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM253H - Tatton Park is an historic estate in Cheshire, England, north of the town of Knutsford. It contains a mansion, Tatton Hall, a medieval manor house, Tatton Old Hall, Tatton Park Gardens, a farm and a deer park of 2,000 acres (8.1 km2). It is a popular visitor attraction and hosts over a hundred events annually. The estate is owned by the National Trust, who administer it jointly with Cheshire East Council. Since 1999, it has hosted North West England's annual Royal Horticultural Society flower show.
There is evidence of human habitation in the area of the estate going back to the Iron Age. In medieval times the village of Tatton was on the site. This has since disappeared but the area of the village and its roadways are a Scheduled Ancient Monument. By the end of the 15th century the estate was owned by the Stanley family who built and occupied the Old Hall. By the 1580s this building had been enlarged and it was owned by the Brereton family. In 1598 the estate was bought by Sir Thomas Egerton, Lord Chancellor of England. Sir Thomas and his children rarely visited the estate and it was loaned to tenants. At the end of the 17th century the estate was owned by John Egerton, Sir Thomas' grandson, who built a new house on the site of the present mansion, some 0.75 miles (1 km) to the west of the Old Hall. This mansion, Tatton Hall, was extensively altered and extended between 1780 and 1813. In 1795 the estate covered 251,000 acres (1,020 km2) (392 sq.miles). The estate remained in the ownership of the Egerton family until the last Lord Egerton died without issue in 1958. He left the house to the National Trust and gave them the park in lieu of death duties. However, as the estate itself was sold by his executors, Cheshire County Council committed to a 99-year lease in place of an endowment to ensure that it was preserved for the benefit of the nation. The Trust's ownership (run now by Cheshire East Council) is some 2,000 acres (8.1 km2) (3.1 sq.miles). The Hall and Par

23 May 1971) is a British newspaper editor and former Conservative Party politician, who was Member of Parliament (MP) for Tatton from June 2001 until he stood down on 3 May 2017. He served as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Prime Minister David Cameron from 2010 to 2016. He has been editor of the London Evening Standard since May 2017 and chair of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership (NPP) since September 2016.
Osborne worked briefly as a freelancer for The Daily Telegraph before joining the Conservative Research Department in 1994 and becoming head of its political section. He went on to be a special adviser to Douglas Hogg, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, and worked at 10 Downing Street as well as for Prime Minister John Major's campaign team in the party's unsuccessful 1997 general election campaign, before becoming a speechwriter and political secretary to Major's successor as party leader, William Hague.
Osborne was elected as MP for Tatton in 2001, becoming the youngest Conservative member of the House of Commons.
As Chancellor, Osborne pursued austerity policies aimed at reducing the budget deficit and launched the Northern Powerhouse initiative. After the Conservatives won an overall majority in the 2015 general election, Cameron reappointed him Chancellor in his second government and gave him the additional title of First Secretary of State. During the premiership of David Cameron, George Osborne was widely viewed as a potential future Leader of the Conservative Party
one Conservative MP suggested that the closeness of his relationship with Cameron meant that the two effectively shared power during the duration of the Cameron Government.
Following the 2016 referendum vote to leave the European Union and Cameron's consequent resignation, Osborne was sacked by newly appointed Prime Minister Theresa May, & returned to the backbenches. He became editor of the Evening Standard

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AA0RT3 - Knutsfords once popular Conservative Club has closed its doors for good.
The club, based in the building at the junction of Manchester Road and Northwich Road, locked up for the final time on November 30th 2012 to signal an end of the era for the town.
In September it was in financial trouble and that the committee had decided that the end was near.
It had once been a popular drinking spot for town residents and combined with being the home of various sports teams it was seen as a key part of Knutsford life.
The club is a separate organisation to MP George Osborne's Tatton Conservative office which also operates from the same building and will not be affected in any way by the closure of the club.
Tony Ween, a member of the club, had been liaising with the building's owner ? Monckton Properties ? in the run-up to the club closing after being asked to do so by club trustees.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4556321256 - 'A picture of spring just about to emerge!
Spotted on Knutsford Road Grappenhall, Cheshire, purple cherry blossom on a tree just about ready to open. In Japan the cherry blossom has nearly mystical spring significance.
During the Heian Period (794–1191), Japanese sought to emulate many practices from China, including the social phenomenon of flower viewing (hanami), where the imperial households, poets, singers and other aristocrats would gather and celebrate under the blossoms. In Japan, cherry trees were planted and cultivated for their beauty, for the adornment of the grounds of the nobility of Kyoto, at least as early as 794. In China, the ume 'plum' tree (actually a species of apricot) was held in highest regard, but by the middle of the ninth century, the cherry blossom had replaced the plum as the favored species in Japan.
Every year the Japanese Meteorological Agency and the public track the sakura zensen (cherry-blossom front) as it moves northward up the archipelago with the approach of warmer weather via nightly forecasts following the weather segment of news programs. The blossoming begins in Okinawa in January and typically reaches Kyoto and Tokyo at the end of March or the beginning of April. It proceeds into areas at the higher altitudes and northward, arriving in Hokkaidō in the colder east a few weeks later. Japanese pay close attention to these forecasts and turn out in large numbers at parks, shrines, and temples with family and friends to hold flower-viewing parties.
Hanami festivals celebrate the beauty of the cherry blossom and for many are a chance to relax and enjoy the beautiful view. The custom of hanami dates back many centuries in Japan: the eighth-century chronicle Nihon Shoki records hanami festivals being held as early as the third century CE.
Most Japanese schools and public buildings have cherry blossom trees outside of them. Since the fiscal and school year both begin in April, in many parts of Honshū, the first day of work or school coincides with the cherry blossom season.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A9GHRM - George Gideon Oliver Osborne CH (born Gideon Oliver Osborne
23 May 1971) is a former British politician and newspaper editor who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2010 to 2016 and as First Secretary of State from 2015 to 2016 in the Cameron government. A member of the Conservative Party, he was Member of Parliament (MP) for Tatton from 2001 to 2017. He was editor of the Evening Standard from 2017 to 2020.
The son of the Osborne & Little co-founder and baronet Peter Osborne, Osborne was born in Paddington and educated at Norland Place School, Colet Court and St Paul's School before studying at Magdalen College, Oxford. After working briefly as a freelancer for The Daily Telegraph, he joined the Conservative Research Department in 1994 and became head of its political section. He went on to be a special adviser to Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Douglas Hogg and work for John Major at 10 Downing Street, including on Major's unsuccessful 1997 general election campaign. In Opposition, he worked as a speechwriter and political secretary to Major's successor as party leader, William Hague.
Osborne was elected as MP for Tatton in 2001, becoming the youngest Conservative member of the House of Commons. He was appointed Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury by Conservative leader Michael Howard in 2004. The following year he ran David Cameron's successful party leadership campaign, and was subsequently appointed Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer. After the 2010 general election, Osborne was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Cameron?Clegg coalition. He succeeded Alistair Darling, inheriting a large deficit in government finances due to the effects of the late-2000s financial crisis. As Chancellor, Osborne's tenure pursued austerity policies aimed at reducing the budget deficit and launched the Northern Powerhouse initiative. After the Conservatives won an overall majority in the 2015 general election, Cameron reappointed him Chancellor

I notice that George has a tie on here, as Chumbawamba once wrote, 'just cos you have a tie on doesn't make you important'. I notice that you rarely see Mr C in a tie, most likely a white shirt opened at the first button. Thats what the courses tell you to do in order to reach out to the shell suit clasees. I would guess George (or Gideon as he was christened) could drop this informality for Tatton.
George is heir to the Osborne baronetcy (of Ballentaylor in the County of Waterford, Ireland). This makes him a part of what is known in Ireland as the Ascendancy, the old Anglo-Irish aristocracy. His father, Sir Peter Osborne, 17th Baronet, is co-founder of the fabric and wallpapers designers, Osborne &
Little. Osborne's wealth is estimated at £4.3m by the New Statesman www.newstatesman.com/uk-politics/2009/10/oxford-universit... . He is also reported to be next in line to inherit a substantial share of Osborne &
Little, his father's luxury wallpaper company, which is thought to be worth over £1 billion. so he would fit well in one of Britains safest Tory seats here in Tatton. Hopefully he would look to the needs of his constituents lower down the social ladder, customers of Cheshire Peaks &
Plains Housing Trust, Contour Homes or Great Places Housing Group as well as the more affluent.
After achieving an upper 2nd class degree at Magdalen College at Oxford University and being a member of the Bullingdon Club, a private dining club of Oxford University students (which was 'infamous for riotous behaviour' and was open only to sons of aristocratic families and the wealthy. Osborne's friends David Cameron and Nat Rothschild were also members of the club), he tried to persue a career as a journalist, but then moved to a vacent position at Conservative Central Office. he cut his teeth on the Prime Minister's Questions team for the various Conservative incumbent leaders Hague, Howard and cameron. Indeed, Osbourne and Cameron are godfathers to each other's children, so this may make his position safer.

Even the logo is the traditional one , maybe NH is back and making a comeback?
Wikipedia details the history....
(Mostyn) Neil Hamilton is the former Tatton (Knutsford) Tory MP. Since losing his seat under embarasing circumstances in 1997 he had to leave politics, he and his wife Christine have become media celebrities.
as the parliamentary record shows, Hamilton while in Tory office had limited regard for the 'little people'. Edwina Currie, the former health minister, described how Hamilton had been unmoved, in May 1988, by a set of photographs showing cancers that could be caused to young people by a product he was promoting. Hamilton apparently said that they were not relevant. In the end, the Thatcher government banned the sale of Skoal bandit products in the UK in late 1989. Both Hamilton and Michael Brown received a £6,000 fee and hospitality from Skoal bandits. The seeds of downfall were maybe set.
On 20th October 1994, The Guardian newspaper published an article claiming that Hamilton, and another minister, Tim Smith, had received money, paid in the form of cash in brown envelopes, from Harrods' owner Mohamed Al-Fayed. They had asked questions on Mo's behalf in the House of Commons. The subsequent furore became known as the 'Cash-for-questions affair'. Hamilton resigned his position as Corporate Affairs Minister five days later.
Discredited, during the 1997 General Election, Hamilton was determined to hold on to his parliamentary seat in what was then the fourth safest Conservative seat in the country. It still is one of teh safest seats in the UK for the Tory's due to relative affluence of the area. Hamilton's majority at the 1992 General Election was almost 16,000. Conservative Central Office said that selection of candidates was purely a matter for the local party and refused to intervene. On 8 April 1997, he won a candidacy selection vote by 182 to 35, although 100 members of the local party abstained. Hamilton said that if the Downey (Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards) report found against him, he would resign as an MP. Unfortunately, the man in the white suit, the BBCs Martin Bell decided to stand as an independent candidate in Tatton. With other parties standing down, Bell triumphed by over 11,000 votes. Hamilton vowed to return, but up to now has failed to. This might be his re-emergence.
Neil and Christine Hamilton are said to have sold their house in Tatton in September 2003 after 20 years of living there. They bought a house in Hullavington, Wiltshire, in October 2004.
Ironically his failings were a drop in the ocean of recent parliamentary expenses scandles. Duck houses, flipping second homes, the John Lewis list etc. Even his successor, shadow chancellor George Osbourne has not been immune. In June 2009 the London Times suggested that he had flipped his 2nd home to claim for a £450,000 loan www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article6474725.ece
It should be remembered that politicians of all shades were embroiled in these scandles, lets hope it improves for all our sakes...

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4393219878 - 'This is the Horace and Eva Banner stained glass window in Grappenhall Methodist Church, on the A50 Knutsford Road, Grappenhall, Cheshire.
They were UFM missionaries to the indians of Brazil. Horace lived from 1906 - 1974 and Eva from 1921 - 1998.
The window depicts Smoke Falls, the location of the Kayapo Mission Station, established by Horace Banner. The falls, on the Xingu are 1000 miles up river from its confluence with the Amazon. Eva and Horace were reputed to be the first white couple ever to see Smoke Falls. With children Jessie Mae and James, they lived in a Kayapo village and ministered to the tribe.
The brass inscription at the side of the window names 'Horace Banner as a missionary to the Tembe and Urubu from 1928 and a pioneer missionary to the Kayapo tribe 1936 - 1972. Eva his wife worked with him amongst the Kayapo at Smoke Falls (1947-1972) and undertook further ministry in Brazil 1975 &
1979. May their example inspire us in our witness for Jesus Christ'.
The window is on the south side of the church, which apart from this is in quite a plain style. Wording on the window is 'Go ye therefore and teach all nations. I am with you always even until the end of the world'. (a version of Matthew 28:20 from the bible).
Below is a more elaborate extract from the Grappenhall IM history:
When Horace first arrived in this part of Brazil, he and William Johnson went in search of three missing missionaries who had not been heard of for several months. Those three missionaries are still known to this day as the ‘Three Freds' : Fred Roberts, Fred Wright and Fred Dawson.
The three Freds had gone to work amongst the Kayapo and had travelled up the Xingo and then it’s tributary, the Rio Zinho. The Kayapo’s only contact with civilisation was through the savage attacks they carried out on the homes of Brazilian settlers often killing the men and carrying off the women back into the rain forest.
It was an 800 mile journey by boat and motor transport before Horace and William reached the edge of hostile Indian territory. They then made two attempts with the assistance of armed guards to follow the route up the Rio Zinho taken by the three Freds. Eventually they penetrated 200 miles into Indian territory to stand below the waterfall known as Smoke Falls to find the sunken motor boat and the clothing remains belonging to the three Freds.
Horace’s party had travelled along the Rio Zinho knowing that they could be ambushed by the Indians at any time. On their return journey to safety, Horace recorded that he had turned to the second chapter of the book of Ezekial and read:-
“and thou, son of man, be not afraid of them…..be not afraid of their words, nor dismayed at their looks……Thou shalt speak my words unto them.”
Words of scripture that Horace would follow and lead to forty years of ministry to the Kayapo Indians.
