Walking around Weaver Square in Northwich, past its many vacant units, you'd struggle to imagine it was once a hive of retail activity. Years ago, hundreds of shoppers would visit daily, drawn by big names like Woolworths and Argos.
Fast-forward to the present day and it is scarcely recognisable. Half of the complex has been demolished, most of the units lie empty and the crowds have long disappeared elsewhere, as online shopping continues to eat away at the high street's fortunes.
Northwich's Cllr Sam Naylor said: It's been tragic. We've seen it decline from what was a thriving, 70s-style shopping precinct into a scene, not of dereliction, but something that smacks of a past era of post-war modern Britain.
Following the recent and sad closure of the much-loved Seafarer, many residents questioned what was happening with the long-planned redevelopment of Weaver Square, which lies mere feet away from the chippy.
Cheshire West and Chester Council acquired the lease of the site back in 2014, by which time many of the units already stood empty. The authority took it over after the previous owner of Weaver Square ceased trading in 2012.
Since then, there have been a number of ideas about what do with the site. But the shopping centre continued to lie mostly-dormant, despite it being partly-demolished in 2019 amid promises of regeneration.
Northwich would then be hit by misfortune after misfortune : the outdoor market was gutted by fire in early 2020
the Covid pandemic caused economic chaos across the world
the devastating flooding in 2021 left many businesses badly damaged
and the town's railway station collapsed in April last year.

The original M&LR single-storey offices facing Hunt's Bank Approach were built in the Italianate style in sandstone ashlar with slate roofs in 1844. They were later enlarged and given a second storey. William Dawes built the station's larger extension for the L&YR in 1909. It is at right-angles to the north end of the old station giving the enlarged station an L-shaped plan. Facing Victoria Station Approach, its fa??ade is in the Edwardian neo-Baroque style, four storeys high and 31 bays to the rounded corner at the south-east end. The ground floor windows have rounded heads and those on the floors above are square. The ornate glass and iron canopy along the fa??ade displays the names of destinations that the station served in Art Nouveau lettering. The canopy was damaged by the Provisional IRA's 1996 bomb placed in a street adjacent to the Arndale Centre and was restored four years later.
Heritage features in the concourse were restored during the 2013-15 renovation, they include the caf?? with its glass dome and mosaic lettering which was originally the first-class dining room, the adjacent bookstall, and the original 1909 wood-panelled booking hall. In the entrance is a large, white glazed tiled map showing the former network of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.
Underneath the map is a bronze World War I war memorial with effigies of Saint George and Saint Michael at each end which was installed in 1923. At the south end of the concourse is the 'soldier's gate' which opened to the former fish docks from where thousands of soldiers departed for World War I and where a bronze plaque was erected to commemorate them. The gateway was restored in 2015 and a steel screen inserted featuring a map of World War I Commonwealth grave cemeteries in Northern France and Belgium.

Lidl opened its first UK store in 1994. Since then, Lidl UK has grown consistently, and today has over 800 stores. After the clients finish their food they often have another cup of tea and a cake and then start to disperse. The volunteers then wash up the dishes, sweep and mop the floor and clean the tables. Some volunteers go around the dining-room and pour out tea for people. On occasion a client may be drunk and become somewhat agitated
on these occasions the nuns step in and sort out the situation. Whilst it can be quite daunting going into the Missionaries of Charity ?soup-kitchen' at first, volunteers often say they become more confident as the weeks go on, and look forward to returning week after week.

She does a really comprehensive breakfast selection including my favourite black (blood) pudding. The \u00a33.30 belly buster (thats barely 3 Euros 60, what are you waiting for, get over to Roman Northwich, in that damn chunnel, swap those croisants and churros for some proper breakfast!!!). A large batch filled with two bacon, one sausage, egg, tomatoes, mushroom, black pudding and cheese. Theres also version for the Atkins (low carb) generation and our vegetarian bretheren.
You can choose your own bread (thankfully not the identikit bread at the Subway franchise further into town), but your choice from a whole raft of types. Fillings cover all tastes from plain turkey salad to Feta &
Pesto, Brie and Cranberry, roasted vegatables, smoked and cream cheese.

The Collegiate Church of St Nicholas Buccleuch, formerly known as Dalkeith Parish Church, stands on the High Street. Dedicated to St Nicholas, this medieval church became a collegiate establishment in 1406, founded by Sir James Douglas. The nave and transepts date from 1854, when the inside of the church was greatly altered. The chancel was abandoned in 1590, walled off from the rest of the church, and is now ruinous. Sir James Douglas, 1st Earl of Morton, and his wife Joanna, daughter of James I, are buried in the choir and have stone effigies. St Nicholas Buccleuch Church remains one of the two Church of Scotland parish churches in Dalkeith.
The ladies had prepared some Hot Cross Buns. These have a chequered history. These are traditionally eaten hot or toasted on Good Friday, with the cross standing as a symbol of The Crucifixion. They are believed by some to pre-date Christianity, although the first recorded use of the term 'hot cross bun' is not until 1733.
Legend has it that buns marked with a cross were eaten by Saxons in honour of the goddess Eostre (the cross is thought to have symbolised the four quarters of the moon). 'Eostre' is probably the origin of the name 'Easter' too
According to cookery writer Elizabeth David, Protestant English monarchs saw the buns as a dangerous hold-over of Catholic belief in England, being baked from the dough used in making the communion wafer. Protestant England attempted to ban the sale of the buns by bakers but they were too popular, and instead Elizabeth I passed a law permitting bakeries to sell them, but only at Easter and Christmas.
Unfortunately I did not have time to sample any of these delights.

This form of aniseed, star anise is a fascinating one to photograph and fills the whole room with a lovely aroma, once its in the open. In western India it is often referred to as 'BarDan', which translates as 'The spice with 12 seeds' (two per tip).
It is found in chinese five spice, Garam Masala and no good biryani should really be without it. Decent vietnamese soup Pho generally has a shot of it too. I do miss the old days when I had a proper spice grinder.
Star Anise is actually unrelated to its name-sake although does contain the same aromatic substance anethole , that creates the flavour in french pastis, Ouzo, Raki and sambuca. It has also been used as the basis for making anti-flu drugs such as the early Tamiflu varients. Whenever a swine flu scare goes out, prices of star anise increase exponentially.
Most is grown in China and harvested around spring, just before its ripe.
Japanese star anise is a similar tree, but not edible. Indeed its mis-use has resulted in many toxic effects. Usually in temples in Japan it is burned as incense, rather than ingested. If you have a keen eye you can usually find some in Chinatown in Manchester. Beats an 'Airwick Solid' any day.

It was named after the traditional dish of the day: collops of bacon served with eggs. (A collop is chunk or slice of meat or fat). In addition to providing meat, the collops were also the source of the fat for the following day's pancakes.
Pancake Day / Shrove Tuesday is the last day before the period which Christians call Lent. It is traditional on this day to eat pancakes. Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that aren't allowed in Lent. Pancakes are eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent.
Of course we now just call this day 'pancake tuesday' now and Asda sells us maple syrup, half a dozen ready made pancakes and JIF lemon in a plastic lemon shape for the pretty resonable price of \u00a32.55
Having the baggage of a catholic education, I know that the following day I should really be in church, as it is ash wednesday.
The pancake above is a home made one, which was eaten with sugar and a squirt of real lemon about 1 minute after thi simage was taken. Yum Yum.

Some people enjoy the freedom associated with going out by themselves and socializing over a drink or two. Others enjoy drinking at home by themselves and find that alcohol helps them to relax and sleep. These kinds of behaviors can indicate that a person is self-medicating problems or issues that they do not want to face. They may be having problems with family members, friends or at work, and need alcohol to help them forget what is going on. A person could also suffer from a mental illness or social anxiety and need alcohol to help them to socialize without realizing that they are becoming dependent.
A person may also begin to drink by themselves because they do not want people to question the amount or frequency of alcohol that they are drinking. A person who hides their drinking from others should be questioning why they are doing it ? are they ashamed or feeling guilty of their drinking? Do friends and family tell them that they drink too much? Why do they want to be drunk alone? A person who drinks alone is putting themselves at risk of developing a substance abuse problem and of increasing the problems they are facing. They are isolating themselves from others, magnifying problems with friends and family and denying that they have a problem.
