Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RY1R1J - Thelwall Morris Men were formed in October 1973, the nucleus of the side being a group of regulars from the Thelwall Folk Club at the Pickering Arms, which was run by Maggie and Rod Goodall.
All of these men were absolute beginners. Some had seen morris dancing at Keele University Folk Festival earlier in the year and fancied trying it. The only trouble was how to get started?
The answer proved to be a small ad in Folk Review magazine, asking for someone to come and teach the dance. Around this time, Chris Maple, who became the side's first squire and foreman had arrived in the North West to take up a job in Liverpool. Chris proved well equal to the task of getting his raw recruits off on the right foot (or in our case, the left).
The side's first musician was Fred Horrobin (Maggie's dad) who busked on accordion for a couple of weeks until someone unearthed the exceptionally talented Steve Burgess from downtown Stockton Heath. Under Chris's tuition, the side learned an assortment of Cotswold dances, mainly Bampton and Adderbury to begin with. The first public performance took place, without baldricks and badges, at the Pickering Arms in August 1974 before a sceptical audience of wives and girlfriends and members of the folk club.
By 1975 the side had acquired it's kit. Black breeches and shoes, white shirt and socks, with baldricks of pale blue and claret surmounted by a distinctive badge representing the wall of Thells or stakes from which Thelwall, England's smallest city, derived its name in Anglo-Saxon times.
The side's first invitation to a day of dance was from Southport Swords in May 1975, and the inexperienced side made a favourable impression. The following year they attended their first Ring Meeting at Thaxted and have attended a Ring Meeting almost every year since then.
In 1977, the side visited Ireland for the Cobh festival, quickly followed, in 1979, by an invitation to Mallow, Ireland

In 2023 it is the 1100th anniversary of Thelwall being declared a ?city'. There is to be an open meeting on Wednesday 30thNovember for local groups and individuals to gather interest and ideas, and set up an organising committee. The meeting will take place at the Royal British Legion, doors opening at 7pm for the meeting to start at 7.30. Representatives and individual members of all village organisations will be very welcome.
We've been looking back at the way the village came together to celebrate 1000 years in 1923 and 1050 years in 1973. In 1923, Thelwall's celebrations helped to fund a new war memorial (Bell Lane), dedicated in 1925. So successful was the event that the pub was drunk dry and the caterers ran out of food and drinks. In May 1973, Thelwall Youth and Community Association organised Festival 1050 ? a four day event with a folk festival, a piano recital by Stephen Hough, an arts and crafts exhibition in the school and a procession that saw Miss Thelwall (Carol Moss) brought across the Manchester Ship Canal by the ferry boat where she was met by the Thelwall Rose Queen (Julie Lager) to a fanfare. They then joined a procession of vintage cars round the village.
If you have any memorabilia, photos, films or memories from these events, we would like to hear from you. You can email thelwallhistorygroup@gmail.com

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RAP37P - A yellow Education Authority (EA) school bus operating in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, photographed from the rear while in service. The vehicle is part of the publicly funded school transport network provided by the Education Authority, which is responsible for transporting thousands of pupils to and from schools each day across Northern Ireland.
School transport plays a particularly important role in Northern Ireland due to a mix of rural geography, school choice, and cross-community travel patterns. EA-operated and contracted buses provide safe, regulated transport for primary and secondary school pupils, forming a routine but essential part of the education system.
Photographed in daylight during normal operation, the image documents everyday public-sector infrastructure and is suitable for editorial use relating to education, government services, child transport safety, and life in Northern Ireland. The Education Authority (EA) school transport policy in Northern Ireland is designed to ensure eligible pupils can access education safely and consistently, particularly given the region's mix of rural communities, school choice, and selective and faith-based education patterns. EA has a statutory duty to provide transport for pupils who meet eligibility criteria, primarily based on age and distance from their nearest suitable school, with additional considerations for special educational needs and disabilities. Transport is delivered through a combination of EA-operated vehicles and contracted private operators, with a strong emphasis on safety standards, safeguarding, and cost control. In recent years the policy has also been shaped by financial pressures, rising fuel and contractor costs, and increasing demand, leading to ongoing reviews of eligibility thresholds, route planning, and efficiency, while remaining a politically and socially sensitive area due to the essential role school transport plays for families across Northern Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R39XY7 - This is the end of a second decade making street art for Dr.D ( aka @Subvertiser ) and the second solo show. There won't be another one for ten years. 'Panicky in the UK' is a collection of the past 20 years of Dr.D's work.
About
'Panicky in the UK' BSMT presents a subversion art exhibition by Dr.D (aka Subvertiser) with Benjamin Irritant and Lazy Edwin.
This is the end of a second decade making street art for Dr.D ( aka @Subvertiser ) and the second solo show. There won't be another one for ten years. 'Panicky in the UK' is a collection of the past 20 years of Dr.D's work that takes like a sampler from the signage of the street and remixes it with the misheard and repurposed phrases of everyday conversations.
Dr. D aka Subvertiserhas been like the window wiper to the rain of advertising we suffer daily. His bus stop and billboard interventions have forced us to stop, recalibrate and question what we have seen and believed for twenty years! Dr. D will be showing alongside two contemporaries, Benjamin Irritant and Edwin who also work with humorous word play and anti-establishment rhetoric while having a keen eye on the climate emergency. Benjamin Irritant stabs at capitalism with surreal collage and Edwin turns street art on it's head, refusing to beautify thereby pushing against the commercial machine that Public Art has become.
This isn't just decoration chasing likes and pound notes. This is genuine street art. To make the show have some worth beyond just pictures on walls, part of the show will be fund raising for a food bank in the 'Panic Buy'.
BSMT has already raised funds for Extinction Rebellion and continuing in this environmentally sound consciousness, work in the show has been produced using repurposed and upcycled consumer goods and advertising detournement.
'Panicky in the UK' opens at BSMT Urban Art gallery with a private view April 2nd and will run until April 19th.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55J49 - This image shows painted safety markings on a sloping railway platform at Warrington Bank Quay railway station in Cheshire, a key stop on the West Coast Main Line. The clear yellow text reads Sloping Platform ? Apply Brakes and is accompanied by universally recognised pictograms indicating luggage trolleys, pushchairs, and wheelchairs.
Sloping platforms are a known safety consideration on parts of the UK rail network, where gradients can cause wheeled items to roll toward the platform edge if not secured. Ground-level warnings such as this are designed to be immediately visible to passengers, supplementing tactile paving and yellow safety lines near the edge of the platform.
Warrington Bank Quay serves long-distance intercity services as well as regional trains, meaning platforms must accommodate high passenger volumes, heavy luggage, and accessibility needs. The presence of inclusive symbols highlights the importance of designing safety messaging that addresses all users, including those with mobility aids.
Photographed from above in daylight, the image emphasises the functional design of railway safety infrastructure and is well suited to editorial use covering rail safety, station design, accessibility, transport policy, and everyday passenger experience on the UK rail network.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PYKTAA - In the UK, street parties are mainly known as private residents' events without wider neighbourhood publicity and have a festive cultural meaning, especially in England and southern Wales. They have historically been held to commemorate major national events, such as VE Day or for royal events such as jubilees, with bunting dressing the street, and children having fun in the street. An estimated 10 million people took part in street parties in 1977 for the Queen's Silver Jubilee.
The tradition seems to have begun in the United Kingdom after World War I as residents' organized peace teas to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.
The tradition was boosted for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April 2011 with about 1 million people joining in street parties. For the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in June 2012 about 2 million took part.
Some street parties are held annually or at any time for residents to meet their neighbours in a traffic-free street in a private street party. Some street parties are public events taking many forms.
An application may need to be made to the local authority to close a road for a street party, who will arrange a temporary traffic regulation order under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. The council may charge a fee if traffic needs to be diverted

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KDKX49 - Cheltenham, also known as Cheltenham Spa, is a spa town and borough on the edge of the Cotswolds in the county of Gloucestershire, England. Cheltenham became known as a health and holiday spa town resort, following the discovery of mineral springs in 1716, and claims to be the most complete Regency town in Britain.
The town hosts several festivals of culture, often featuring nationally and internationally famous contributors and attendees
they include the Cheltenham Literature Festival, the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, the Cheltenham Science Festival, the Cheltenham Music Festival, the Cheltenham Cricket Festival and the Cheltenham Food & Drink Festival. In steeplechase horse racing, the Gold Cup is the main event of the Cheltenham Festival, held every March
Cheltenham stands on the small River Chelt, which rises nearby at Dowdeswell and runs through the town on its way to the Severn. It was first recorded in 803, as Celtan hom
the meaning has not been resolved with certainty, but latest scholarship concludes that the first element preserves a pre-British noun cilta, 'steep hill', here referring to the Cotswold scarp
the second element may mean 'settlement' or 'water-meadow'. As a royal manor, it features in the earliest pages of the Gloucestershire section of Domesday Book where it is named Chintenham
The districts of Cheltenham include: Arle, Benhall, Charlton Kings, Fairview, Fiddler's Green, Hesters Way, Lansdown, Leckhampton, Lynworth, Montpellier, Oakley, Pittville, Prestbury, the Reddings, Rowanfield, St Luke's, St Mark's, St Paul's, St Peter's, Springbank, Swindon Village, Tivoli, Up Hatherley, Whaddon and Wyman's Brook.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59WXB - This image shows a commemorative plaque mounted on the exterior brick wall of Micklegate House, located on Micklegate in the historic city of York. The plaque states that the building was constructed for John Bourchier (1710?1759) and records that his ancestor, Sir John Bourchier, was one of the signatories to the warrant for the execution of King Charles I in 1649.
The inscription directly links the building to the legacy of the English Civil War and one of the most significant moments in British constitutional history, when Charles I was tried and executed following conflict between the monarchy and Parliament. Sir John Bourchier was among those who authorised the regicide, an act that profoundly shaped the future of the English state.
Micklegate itself is one of York's most historic streets, serving for centuries as the principal ceremonial route into the city. Buildings along the street reflect York's layered political, religious, and social history, and plaques such as this play an important role in interpreting that past for residents and visitors.
Photographed close-up to show the plaque text and brickwork clearly, the image provides a strong documentary record of heritage interpretation, civil war memory, and urban historical storytelling. It is well suited for editorial use covering British history, historic buildings, commemorative plaques, monarchy and regicide, and the historic streets of York.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTD310 - The building that is now The Old Wellington Inn was built in 1552 next to Manchester's market square. In 1554, it was purchased by the Byrom family and became part residence and part drapers shop. The writer John Byrom was born there in 1692. The premises were licensed in 1862 and became the Vintners Arms, then the Kenyon Vaults and later The Old Wellington Inn. The building was extended in the 18th century to house John Shaw's Punch House which, as the name suggests, was licensed for the sale of strong alcoholic punch and became a meeting place for High Tories and possibly Jacobites
Shaw was master of the punch house for 58 years until he died in 1796 at the age of 83. After Shaw's death the punch house was kept by Peter Fearnhead, with the assistance of Molly under the same rules, until it was sold about ten years later to William Goodall, who had been the proprietor of the Fleece Tavern at the opposite end of the Old Shambles. The new landlord demolished part of the building and converted the rest into The King's Head Tavern in 1807. It later became known as Sinclair's, until oysters were introduced to the menu in 1845 and it became Sinclair's Oyster Bar, the name it retains to this day
In 1974, most of the old property between Shudehill and Market Street was demolished to accommodate the new Arndale Shopping Centre. The Old Shambles was underpinned with a concrete raft and, according to the Greater Manchester County Records Office, jacked-up 4 feet 9 inches to fit in with this development in the newly created Shambles Square
In June 1996, an IRA bomb exploded in nearby Corporation Street and badly damaged many of the surrounding buildings. The buildings were subsequently dismantled and moved 70 metres northwards to their present location, close to Manchester Cathedral, in 1999. The Old Wellington Inn and Sinclair's were rebuilt at 90 degrees to each other and joined together by a stone extension to form two sides of the new Shambles Square

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JYNXM0 - Architecture and features
The original M&LR single-storey offices facing Hunt's Bank Approach were built in the Italianate style in sandstone ashlar with slate roofs in 1844. They were later enlarged and given a second storey. William Dawes built the station's larger extension for the L&YR in 1909. It is at right-angles to the north end of the old station giving the enlarged station an L-shaped plan. Facing Victoria Station Approach, its fa??ade is in the Edwardian neo-Baroque style, four storeys high and 31 bays to the rounded corner at the south-east end. The ground floor windows have rounded heads and those on the floors above are square. The ornate glass and iron canopy along the fa??ade displays the names of destinations that the station served in Art Nouveau lettering. The canopy was damaged by the Provisional IRA's 1996 bomb placed in a street adjacent to the Arndale Centre and was restored four years later.
Heritage features in the concourse were restored during the 2013-15 renovation, they include the caf?? with its glass dome and mosaic lettering which was originally the first-class dining room, the adjacent bookstall, and the original 1909 wood-panelled booking hall. In the entrance is a large, white glazed tiled map showing the former network of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.
Underneath the map is a bronze World War I war memorial with effigies of Saint George and Saint Michael at each end which was installed in 1923. At the south end of the concourse is the 'soldier's gate' which opened to the former fish docks from where thousands of soldiers departed for World War I and where a bronze plaque was erected to commemorate them. The gateway was restored in 2015 and a steel screen inserted featuring a map of World War I Commonwealth grave cemeteries in Northern France and Belgium.
The station received Grade II listed building status in 1988

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JKMR1J - This ceremonial stone circle was erected around 2,500BC. At present there are seventy-odd stones of heavily weathered local oolitic limestone (see Geology) set in a rather irregular ring about 31m across. They were poetically described by William Stukeley as being corroded like worm eaten wood, by the harsh Jaws of Time
they were said to make a very noble, rustic, sight, and strike an odd terror upon the spectators, and admiration at the design of ?em. More recently, Aubrey Burl called them seventy-seven stones, stumps and lumps of leprous limestone.
The number of stones has changed over the years. Legends refer to stones having been taken away (to make bridges and the like), and it is likely that this created most of the gaps now visible. The stones are famously uncountable, but originally may have numbered about 105 standing shoulder to shoulder. At the time the Stones were first protected as an ancient monument (1883) the owner was reported to have replaced all the fallen stones in their original foundation. In fact the restoration was far from exact: most of the stones that are known to have been standing in their present positions since the 17th century show that it was originally built as an accurate circle.
THE FORM OF THE STONES
Two stones immediately outside the ring (one fallen) mark the portalled entrance to the circle opposite the tallest stone. The Stones stand in a very low bank with a wide gap on the same side as the entrance, possibly resulting from the interior being levelled.
This form of design with close-set stones, a portalled entrance and levelled interior is very characteristic of stone circles in the Lake District ? such as Long Meg and her Daughters near Penrith, and, even more similar, Castlerigg near Keswick, and Swinside north of Ulverston. There are also a few in eastern Ireland. It is therefore likely that the people who built the King's Men came from one of those areas. When they felt the need to build a stone cir

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JKC2GT - The Victoria line is a London Underground line that runs between Brixton in south London and Walthamstow Central in the north-east, via the West End. It is printed in light blue on the Tube map and is one of the only two lines on the network to run completely underground, the other being the Waterloo & City line.
The line was constructed in the 1960s and was the first entirely new Underground line in London for 50 years. It was designed to reduce congestion on other lines, particularly the Piccadilly line and the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line. The first section, from Walthamstow Central to Highbury & Islington, opened in September 1968 and an extension to Warren Street followed in December. The line was completed to Victoria station in March 1969 and was opened by Queen Elizabeth II who rode a train from Green Park to Victoria. The southern extension to Brixton opened in 1971, and Pimlico station was added in 1972.
The Victoria line is operated using automatic train operation, but all trains have drivers. The 2009 Tube Stock replaced the original 1967 Tube Stock trains. The line serves 16 stations and all but Pimlico provide interchanges with other Transport for London or National Rail services. The line, the most intensively used on the Underground, is used by over 200 million passengers each year, making it the sixth-busiest tube line.

A BOLD EXPRESSION IN KFC'S NEW STORE DESIGN
Designing KFC's innovative restaurant concept and brand expression
There are dramatic changes afoot in the world of ?Quick Service Retailing', driven by new levels of consumer expectations and dynamic new food experiences. This revolution is exemplified by KFC's mission to express its true values, much loved product proposition and brand story, through the experience in its restaurants. Having already taken KFC several leaps forwards in its transformation through small, fast-casual metropolitan concept, I-AM secured the brief to update the design, customer journey and in-restaurant communications for KFC's primary format.
KFC's Brand Personality
KFC's story is irresistible
and its personality has always been inseparable from a joyful love of chicken. Lately a bold energy and vibrancy is driving KFC in the UK, celebrating the brand's story, taking pride in the simple, joyful deliciousness of Finger Lickin' Good fresh fried chicken and the social aspect of bringing people together over a KFC. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JBXJJD - Lymm is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Warrington, Cheshire, England, which incorporates the hamlets of Booths Hill, Broomedge, Church Green, Deansgreen, Heatley, Heatley Heath, Little Heatley, Oughtrington, Reddish, Rushgreen and Statham. At the 2021 United Kingdom census it had a population of 12,700.
History
The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre. The village appears as Limme in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Lymm was an agricultural village until the Industrial Revolution, which brought the Bridgewater Canal and the Warrington and Altrincham Junction Railway to the village. The village played a prominent role within the salt extraction industry, gold beating industry and cotton industry (many of its inhabitants were fustian cutters).
Lymm Heritage Centre, which opened in June 2017, is in the centre of the village on Legh Street. It hosts exhibitions related to local history as well as activities for schools and visitors.
Morris dancing was taking place in Lymm as early as 1817, often appearing in the village at Rushbearing time throughout the Victorian era. Morris dancing[7] continues to feature within the village with Lymm Morris dancers frequently performing during Rushbearing and at the various annual village festivals including the Lymm May Queen Festival, Lymm Festival and Lymm Dickensian Festival.
In 2017, Lymm was voted as one of the 'Best Places to Live' according to The Times and The Sunday Times list. In 2023, the village was voted as one of Britains 'Most Desirable Towns' according to The Daily Telegraph

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JBXJJF - The national flag of the United Kingdom is the Union Jack, also known as the Union Flag.
The design of the Union Jack dates back to the Act of Union 1801 which united the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland (previously in personal union) to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The flag consists of the red cross of Saint George (patron saint of England (which also represents Wales)), edged in white, superimposed on the saltire of St Patrick (patron saint of Ireland), also edged in white, which are superimposed on the saltire of Saint Andrew (patron saint of Scotland). Wales is not represented in the Union Flag by Wales's patron saint, Saint David, because the flag was designed whilst Wales was part of the Kingdom of England.
The Union Flag can be flown by any individual or organisation in Great Britain on any day of their choice. Legal regulations restrict the use of the Union Flag on Government buildings in Northern Ireland. Long-standing restrictions on Government use of the flag elsewhere were abolished in July 2007
The Union Flag is flown from Government buildings at half-mast in the following situations:
from the announcement of the death of the Sovereign (an exception is made for Proclamation Day ? the day the new Sovereign is proclaimed, when the Flag is flown at full mast from 11 am to sunset)
the day of the funeral of a member of the British Royal Family
the funeral of a foreign Head of State
the funeral of a former British Prime Minister

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DAPRAF - Watchet railway station is a station on the West Somerset Railway, a heritage railway in Somerset, England. It is situated in the small harbour town of Watchet.
History
Terminus: 1862?1873
The station opened on 31 March 1862 when the West Somerset Railway (WSR) opened from Norton Junction (later Norton Fitzwarren), serving as the WSR's original line terminus. Watchet was chosen as the WSR line's terminus, as it had been since the Middle Ages an important regional port on the Bristol Channel. Local iron ore, timber and paper products were exported, whilst from the same time, it had become an important national port for the import of French wine and salt. The commercial aim of the WSR in choosing Watchet as its terminus was hence to provide a wider and cheaper distribution route for goods from the port.
The GWR increased the capacity of the line in the 1930s. Because of the position of the goods shed opposite the platform, it was not possible to add a second track and platform, and a passing loop was constructed at Kentford just 0.75 miles (1.21 km) west of the station. It opened on 10 July 1933 but the signal box was only used during the daytime each summer.
Nationalisation in 1948 saw the GWR become the Western Region of British Railways. On 24 August 1952, the signal box at Washford closed, and the one at Kentford remained open until 7 May 1964 when it also closed. Freight traffic was withdrawn on 6 July 1964 and passenger trains on 4 January 1971.
Preservation
The station was reopened by the new West Somerset Railway on 28 August 1976

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHB6WY - King's College London (informally King's or KCL) is a public research university located in London, England. King's was established by royal charter in 1829 under the patronage of King George IV and the Duke of Wellington. In 1836, King's became one of the two founding colleges of the University of London. It is one of the oldest university-level institutions in England. In the late 20th century, King's grew through a series of mergers, including with Queen Elizabeth College and Chelsea College of Science and Technology (in 1985), the Institute of Psychiatry (in 1997), the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals and the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery (in 1998).
King's has five campuses: its historic Strand Campus in central London, three other Thames-side campuses (Guy's, St Thomas' and Waterloo) nearby and one in Denmark Hill in south London. It also has a presence in Shrivenham, Oxfordshire, for its professional military education, and another in Newquay, Cornwall, where its information service centre is based. Its academic activities are organised into nine faculties, which are subdivided into numerous departments, centres, and research divisions. In 2021/22, King's had a total income of ?1.149 billion, of which ?221.2 million was from research grants and contracts. It has the fourth largest endowment of any university in the United Kingdom, and the largest of any in London. King's is the fifth-largest university in the United Kingdom by total enrolment and receives over 70,000 undergraduate applications per year, making it the fourth-most popular university in the UK by volume of applications.
King's is a member of academic organisations including the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the European University Association, and the Russell Group. King's is home to six Medical Research Council centres and is a founding member of the King's Health Partners academic health sciences centre

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHBJW7 - Based in The London Fields area, Three Sods Brewery is a small independently owned Brewery and Tap Room. We Brew a range of Hop forward Pale Ales and IPAs as well as seasonal beers
This beer is a collaboration with the anti-fascist organisation Hope Not Hate. This creates a classic pale ale with a lot of body and citrus flavours
Three Sods Brewery has been brewing in the heart of East London since 2011. The three original sods ? Dave, Adam and Jordan came together through a mutual love of beer.
The name comes from prohibition-era Ireland when bootleggers of illegal Poit??n would leave a sod of peat, painted white, outside their door so people knew where to find their booze.
The Sods family has grown considerably in recent years and has refused to sacrifice on quality. Our Head Brewer, Rich, and our Sales Director, Wilson, share the same passion we had when we set up Three Sods 9 years ago. Our Beers are in pubs all over the UK and we've recently launched our online shop and new Taproom in London Fields. Come and join us for a pint!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AGTXBK - Dorney Lake (also known as Eton College Rowing Centre, and as Eton Dorney as a 2012 Summer Olympics venue) is a purpose-built rowing lake in England. It is near the village of Dorney, Buckinghamshire, and is around 3 km (2 miles) west of Windsor and Eton, close to the River Thames.
The lake is privately owned and financed by Eton College, which spent ?17 million developing it. Additional grants, totalling ?500,000, were obtained from Sport England, UK Sport, the DCMS and SEEDA in order to build the lake's finish tower. The project was completed in 2006, after 10 years of construction. Although it is primarily for use by the school, the facilities are hired out for rowing, as well as for canoeing, dragon boating, open water swimming and triathlon.
Since the lake was opened, a number of annual regattas that were previously held on the River Thames have been transferred to the lake. These include the Marlow Regatta in June, the Metropolitan Regatta in May/June, and the Wallingford Regatta in May.
The lake's dimensions follow the FISA rules for a rowing lake suitable for hosting a World Rowing Championship, World Rowing Cup or Olympic regatta:
Stillwater, with consistent water conditions
2,200 metres (7,200 ft) straight length for racing
8 rowing lanes, each 13.5 metres (44 ft) wide
Minimum water depth of 3.5 metres (11 ft)
A return channel allowing boats to move to the start, separated from the main lake by an island

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RKMM9Y - British Airways i360 is a 162-metre (531 ft) observation tower on the seafront of Brighton, East Sussex, England at the landward end of the former West Pier. The tower opened on 4 August 2016. From the fully enclosed viewing pod, visitors experience 360-degree views across Brighton, the South Downs, the English Channel and on the clearest days it is possible to see Beachy Head 17 miles (27 km) to the east and the Isle of Wight 41 miles (66 km) to the west.
British Airways i360 was designed, engineered, manufactured and promoted by the team responsible for the London Eye. It is estimated by the developers that the i360 will generate more than 440 permanent jobs
160 posts at the attraction, and additional jobs from the spin-off benefits to other businesses in the city. The attraction cost ?46 million, with ?36 million being funded by a Public Works Loan Board (PWLB) loan through Brighton and Hove city council.
Formerly known as the Brighton i360, the project aimed to attract 739,000 paying customers every year, but has consistently fallen significantly short of this. The owner of the site, the West Pier Trust, hoped in 2014 that a successful i360 would lead to the rebuilding of the historic West Pier. The i360 carried its 1,000,000th passenger on the 11am flight on 11 March 2019.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEJ6X3 - Surbiton is a suburban area of south-west London within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. It is situated next to the River Thames, 11.0 miles south west of central London. Surbiton was formerly within the County of Surrey, but became part of Greater London in 1965 following the London Government Act 1963, together with many areas including neighbouring Kingston and Richmond.
Surbiton possesses a mixture of Art-Deco courts, more recent residential blocks and grand 19th century townhouses blending into a sea of semi-detached 20th century housing estates.
The present-day town came into existence after a plan to build a London-Southampton railway line through nearby Kingston was rejected by Kingston Council, who feared that it would be detrimental to the coaching trade. This resulted in the line being routed further south, through a cutting in the hill south of Surbiton. Surbiton railway station opened in 1838, and was originally named Kingston-upon-Railway. It was only renamed Surbiton to distinguish it from the new Kingston railway station on the Shepperton branch line, which opened on 1 January 1869. The present station has an art deco fa??ade.
As a result, Kingston is now on a branch line, whereas passengers from Surbiton (smaller in comparison) can reach London Waterloo in about 15 minutes on a fast direct service
as well as places further afield, including Portsmouth and Southampton.
It was once home to Surbiton Studios which were owned by Stoll Pictures, before the company shifted its main production to Cricklewood Studios.

The building is constructed around a massive inner oak frame which incorporates a thirty foot cross beam and vertical house tree over eighteen feet six inches high.
Throughout the premises the timber frames and roof trusses are exposed with many of the panels retaining their original 'wattle and daub' infill.
One of the Stairwell timbers has recently been dated as early 12th Century making it the oldest, to date, located in Chester.
The Building was originally thought to have been the Tithe Store of the Earl of Shrewsbury who at one time owned the entire block in which this property stands.
He held the title of 'Sergeant of Bridgegate' with the right to take a toll from carts using the Old Dee Bridge, the toll being three coins of the period, which bore the Kings Head, hence the buildings present name.
A recent survey suggests that Chester's famous 'Rows' might have extended to this part of the City, but the earliest documented evidence is an engraving by Bateman of 1816 showing the property with twin gables.
Over the door is a sign which reads 'Dealers in Tea and Coffee'. The Georgian facade was added at the beginning of the 19th Century after which it was sold by the Shrewsbury Estate under the 'Act of 1862'.
Since then the building has been put to various uses from a Private Dwelling to a Wine Merchants, Refreshment Rooms, Bespoke Tailors and now, rather appropriately as 'The Three Kings Tea Rooms'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDD7EH - The Rollright Stones is a complex of three Neolithic and Bronze Age megalithic monuments near the village of Long Compton, on the borders of Oxfordshire and Warwickshire. Constructed from local oolitic limestone, the three monuments now known as the King's Men and the Whispering Knights in Oxfordshire and the King Stone in Warwickshire, are distinct in their design and purpose, and were built at different periods in late prehistory. The stretch of time during which the three monuments were erected bears witness to a continuous tradition of ritual behaviour on sacred ground, from the 4th to the 2nd millennium BCE.
The first to be constructed was the Whispering Knights, a dolmen that dates to the Early or Middle Neolithic period and which was likely to have been used as a place of burial. This was followed by the King's Men, a stone circle which was constructed in the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age
unusually, it has parallels to other circles located further north, in the Lake District, implying a trade-based or ritual connection. The third monument, the King Stone, is a single monolith, and although it is not known when it was constructed, the dominant theory amongst archaeologists is that it was a Bronze Age grave marker.
The British philologist Andrew Breeze has proposed that the name Rollright is from the Brittonic phrase *rodland r??x 'wheel enclosure groove', where *r??x 'groove' refers to a narrow valley near Great Rollright and *rodland 'wheel enclosure' refers to the King's Men circle. By the Early Modern period, folkloric stories had grown up around the Stones, telling of how they had once been a king and his knights who had been turned to stone by a witch
such stories continued to be taught amongst local people well into the 19th century. Meanwhile, antiquarians such as William Camden, John Aubrey and William Stukeley had begun to take an interest in the monuments, leading to fuller archaeological investigations in the 20th century, culminating in e

This is a panorama of four hipstamatic shots taken on an iphone stiched together. It was taken in Manchester's Northern Quarter.
John Cooper Clarke (born 25 January 1949) is an English performance poet who first became famous during the punk rock era of the late 1970s when he became known as a 'punk poet'.[1] He released several albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and continues to perform regularly.
His recorded output has mainly centred around musical backing from The Invisible Girls, which featured Martin Hannett, Pete Shelley, Bill Nelson, Paul Burgess and Steve Hopkins.
His first releases were on the independent label Rabid, starting with the EP Innocents in October 1977. He toured with Bill Nelson's band Be-Bop Deluxe in 1978 and was signed by Epic Records, who issued the Nelson-produced debut album Disguise In Love in 1978.
In 1979 he had his only UK top 40 hit with 'Gimmix! (Play Loud)'. Clarke toured with Linton Kwesi Johnson, and has performed on the same bill as bands such as Sex Pistols, The Fall, Joy Division, Buzzcocks, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Elvis Costello, Rockpile, and New Order (including at their May 1984 Music for Miners benefit concert at London's Royal Festival Hall). His set is characterised by lively, rapid-fire renditions of his poems, usually performed a cappella. Often referred to as 'the bard of Salford', he usually refers to himself on stage as 'Johnny Clarke, the name behind the hairstyle'.
This mural which is just on the gable end of Cord bar is just around the corner from Tib St, the old seedy street that used to be home to pet shops and sex shops. These days its more arty bars, nice cafes and music venues. Still a bit seedy, reassuringly!

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD5E - King's College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England. Formally named The King's College of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas in Cambridge, the college lies on the River Cam and faces out onto King's Parade in the centre of the city.
King's was founded in 1441 by Henry VI, soon after he had founded its sister college in Eton. However, the King's plans for the college were disrupted by the Wars of the Roses and resultant scarcity of funds, and his eventual deposition. Little progress was made on the project until in 1508 Henry VII began to take an interest in the college, most likely as a political move to legitimise his new position. The building of the college's chapel, begun in 1446, was finally finished in 1544 during the reign of Henry VIII.
King's College Chapel is regarded as one of the greatest examples of late Gothic English architecture. It has the world's largest fan-vault, and the chapel's stained-glass windows and wooden chancel screen are considered some of the finest from their era.
The building is seen as emblematic of Cambridge. The chapel's choir, composed of male students at King's and choristers from the nearby King's College School, is one of the most accomplished and renowned in the world. Every year on Christmas Eve the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols (a service devised specifically for King's by college dean Eric Milner-White) is broadcast from the chapel to millions of listeners worldwide

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
'Walk on the Wild Side' is a Lou Reed song from his 1972 David Bowie produced second solo album Transformer. It namechecks taboo topics such as transsexuality, drugs, male prostitutes and oral sex and the term 'colored' to refer to African Americans, a term which was still common in that era.
The lyrics tell of a series of individuals and their journeys to New York City, and refers to several of the regular 'superstars' at Andy Warhol's New York studio, The Factory, namely Holly Woodlawn, Candy Darling, Joe Dallesandro, Jackie Curtis and Joe Campbell (referred to in the song by his nickname Sugar Plum Fairy). Candy Darling was also the subject of Reed's song 'Candy Says'.
The saxophone solo played over the fadeout of the song was performed by Ronnie Ross, who had previously taught David Bowie to play the saxophone during Bowie's childhood. It has been heavily covered by Echo and the Bunnymen and The Strokes to name a few.
I picked up on Reed after an introduction to the VU.

Cruz101 is looking to find the 2010 the gay Village Rear of the Year in Manchester! The competition promises to be the hottest ever, with guys from venues, businesses, organisations and charities all taking part to be crowned the new winner! Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4863609745 - 'The King Of The Rumbling Spires - 'Marc Bolan &
T-Rex' - Play this track here.
¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
Today a track from a band who were critically examined by few, and are unfortunately remembered for their glam rock and 'Marc' teenpop TV shows period. I hope this track will urge you to look a bit deeper into them or dig out that old black 7 or 12 inch player.
T. Rex were an English rock band fronted by guitarist, singer and songwriter Marc Bolan. Formed as Tyrannosaurus Rex in 1960s London, the folk rock group's debut album 'My People Were Fair and Had Sky in Their Hair... But Now They're Content to Wear Stars on Their Brows' in 1968 reached number 15 in the UK.
In the 1970s, they achieved mainstream success as a glam rock band with the hits 'Get It On', 'Ride a White Swan', '20th Century Boy', 'Children of the Revolution', 'Hot Love', 'Telegram Sam' and 'Metal Guru'. After waning commercial success in the mid-70s, T. Rex ended in 1977 after Bolan was killed at the wheel of his Mini in a car accident.
'King of the Rumbling Spires' in 1970 was the beginning of the transition to a full electric rock/pop band rather than the folky origins of the band. The early 1970's brought a clutch of hits, many covered by Bauhaus and others
Ride a White Swan, Hot Love, Get It On.
EMI even gave Bolan his own record label in the UK—T. Rex Records, the 'T. Rex Wax Co.'. However by 1973 its said that success, money, cocaine, and brandy had become the downfall of the band, with a number of members leaving.
In the summer of 1976 a resurgence started. T. Rex released two more singles, 'I Love to Boogie' (which charted at number 13) and 'Laser Love', which made number 42. In early 1977 Dandy in the Underworld was released to critical acclaim.
Bolan had slimmed down and regained his elfin looks, and the songs too had a stripped-down, streamlined sound. A spring UK tour with punk band The Damned on support garnered positive reviews. As Bolan was enjoying a new surge in popularity, he talked about performing again with old band members, as well as reuniting with legendary producer Tony Visconti.
It was not to be however. Marc Bolan and his girlfriend Gloria Jones spent the evening of 15th September 1977 drinking at the Speakeasy and then dining at Morton's club on Berkeley Square, in Mayfair central London. While driving home early the morning of 16 September, Jones crashed Bolan's purple Mini 1275GT into a tree (now the site of Bolan's Rock Shrine), at Barnes Bridge, Barnes, South West London.
This was less than a mile from his home at 142 Upper Richmond Road West in East Sheen. While Jones was severely injured, Bolan was killed in the crash, two weeks before his 30th birthday. Taken from us, who knows what could have been...

King's College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge, England. Founded in 1441 by Henry VI, the college's formal name is 'The King's College of Our Lady and St. Nicholas in Cambridge'. It is usually referred to simply as 'King's' within the university.
Originally, the college was to be specifically for boys from Eton College. It was not until 1865 that the first non-Etonian undergraduates arrived to study at King's, and the first fellow to have not attended Eton was elected in 1873. The connection with Eton is now weak, but a scholarship to attend the college, exclusively available to students from Eton, is still awarded each year.
The Gatehouse, was built in the neo-Gothic style and adorned with a clock. The chapel is the most impressive in the city.
Famous Alumni include J.G.Ballard, Stephen Poliakoff, Salman Rushdie, John Maynard Keynes and Alan Turing.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD4C - Iona Abbey, now an ecumenical church, is of particular historical and religious interest to pilgrims and visitors alike. It is the most elaborate and best-preserved ecclesiastical building surviving from the Middle Ages in the Western Isles of Scotland. Though modest in scale in comparison to medieval abbeys elsewhere in Western Europe, it has a wealth of fine architectural detail, and monuments of many periods.
In front of the Abbey stands the 9th century St Martin's Cross, one of the best-preserved Celtic crosses in the British Isles, and a replica of the 8th century St John's Cross (original fragments in the Abbey museum).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R9X4J2 - Cnut (/k???nju?t/
Old English: Cnut cyning
Old Norse: Kn?tr inn r??ki [??knu?tr ??n? ??ri?k?]
died 12 November 1035), also known as Cnut the Great and Canute, was King of England from 1016, King of Denmark from 1018, and King of Norway from 1028 until his death in 1035. The three kingdoms united under Cnut's rule are referred to together as the North Sea Empire.
As a Danish prince, Cnut won the throne of England in 1016 in the wake of centuries of Viking activity in northwestern Europe. His later accession to the Danish throne in 1018 brought the crowns of England and Denmark together. Cnut sought to keep this power-base by uniting Danes and English under cultural bonds of wealth and custom. After a decade of conflict with opponents in Scandinavia, Cnut claimed the crown of Norway in Trondheim in 1028. The Swedish city Sigtuna was held by Cnut (he had coins struck there that called him king, but there is no narrative record of his occupation). In 1031, Malcolm II of Scotland also submitted to him, though Anglo-Norse influence over Scotland was weak and ultimately did not last by the time of Cnut's death.
Dominion of England lent the Danes an important link to the maritime zone between the islands of Great Britain and Ireland, where Cnut, like his father before him, had a strong interest and wielded much influence among the Norse?Gaels. Cnut's possession of England's dioceses and the continental Diocese of Denmark?with a claim laid upon it by the Holy Roman Empire's Archdiocese of Hamburg-Bremen?was a source of great prestige and leverage within the Catholic Church and among the magnates of Christendom (gaining notable concessions such as one on the price of the pallium of his bishops, though they still had to travel to obtain the pallium, as well as on the tolls his people had to pay on the way to Rome). After his 1026 victory against Norway and Sweden, and on his way back from Rome where he attended the coronation of the Holy Roman Emperor

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7DE16 - All Saints Church is the historic parish church of Kingston upon Thames on the edge of London, and is set between the ancient Market Place and the main shopping centre. It forms part of the Diocese of Southwark and with the church of St John, it forms a team of Anglican churches serving residents, businesses, schools and Kingston University. The church is the only Grade I listed building (but not structure) in Kingston.
A church at Kingston sprang up in Saxon times and Egbert, king of Wessex, held his great council at the site in 838. Seven Saxon kings of England, including Athelstan and Ethelred the Unready, were crowned here in the 10th century. The present church was begun in 1120 under the orders of Henry I and has been developed since then. It is a cruciform church with a central tower and a four-bay nave, with Perpendicular clerestory, choir, north and south aisles, transepts and chapels. The exterior is of flint with stone dressings and a parapet of stone battlements
