Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E91ENY - A close-up documentary view of a public Children's Play Area sign beside open grassland at Red Lane, Appleton, Warrington, Cheshire, with the clear instruction No Dogs Allowed and a red warning symbol showing a barred dog. The image records a familiar but important local public health message: children's play spaces, sports fields and parks need protection from dog fouling, contaminated soil, unpleasant mess and avoidable infection risks. Dog faeces can carry roundworm eggs linked with toxocariasis, and children are a particular concern because they play close to the ground, touch grass, mud, play equipment and football areas, and may put contaminated fingers or objects near their mouths. This makes the apparently simple no dogs sign a useful editorial image for stories about councils, parks management, responsible dog ownership, street cleansing, public space protection orders, hygiene, community safety and the tension between dog walking and safe recreation for children. The scene is plainly suburban north west England, with a wooden post, mown green playing field, goalposts, leafless trees and distant Warrington housing under a bright blue sky with thin cloud, suggesting a cool clear late winter or early spring day. The sign is weathered but legible, with strong black, white and red graphic design. It also illustrates the wider practical nuisance of dog dirt: soiled shoes, contaminated sports pitches, spoiled family recreation, extra council cleaning costs and reduced confidence in shared open spaces. For stock use it can support articles about playground bylaws, no dogs allowed rules, environmental health campaigns, dog waste bins, enforcement, fines, antisocial behaviour, public parks, local authority signage, safe outdoor play, childhood health, disease prevention and the everyday civic detail that keeps parks usable. The subject is a clear British public information sign in a real community setting.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E54RKK - Editorial image of a Dr Pepper Dare to Cream soft-drink giveaway promotion staged in Exchange Square, Manchester, showing branded sampling, experiential marketing and consumer engagement in a busy city-centre public space. The scene represents modern drinks advertising in a prominent urban retail and leisure environment, linking a fizzy drink brand with live promotional activity, product trial, brand awareness and public-facing marketing in central Manchester. Exchange Square is one of the city's best-known shopping and events locations, beside Selfridges and close to the Corn Exchange, making it a strong setting for launch activity, product sampling, pop-up campaigns, promotional staff interaction and high-footfall advertising aimed at shoppers, tourists, office workers and passers-by. The image is useful for editorial themes around soft drinks, carbonated beverages, FMCG marketing, outdoor promotion, branded events, consumer culture, product giveaway campaigns, retail theatre, city-centre commerce and public realm activation. It also fits wider stories about sugary drinks, no-alcohol refreshment, summer marketing, lifestyle branding, youth marketing, experiential campaigns, social-media-friendly promotions, UK city-centre retail, Manchester shopping districts and the visual presence of global food and drink brands in public space. Relevant search themes include Dr Pepper promotion, Dare to Cream campaign, Manchester city centre event, Exchange Square activation, branded giveaway, pop-up drinks stand, soft drink sampling, outdoor advertising, promotional campaign photography, beverage marketing and editorial urban retail scene. The title references a giveaway promotion in Manchester's Exchange Square, and the location is consistent with the established central events space at 1 Exchange Square, Manchester, M3 1BD. It also suits features on brand activations, pedestrianised shopping quarters, British city life and event-led marketing in regional centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFJ33E - This image shows the Summer of 69 mural located on a gable wall at Hopewell Crescent in West Belfast, Northern Ireland. The mural depicts two children standing amid rubble and damaged buildings, referencing the widespread civil unrest and destruction that occurred in Belfast during the summer of 1969, a period widely regarded as the beginning of the Troubles.
Rendered in a restrained, illustrative style, the artwork uses muted tones and detailed line work to evoke memory, loss, and the impact of conflict on civilian life, particularly on children and families living in affected neighbourhoods. The surrounding painted scene of demolished housing and debris reflects the disruption to residential communities during that period.
The photograph was taken on a grey, overcast day, with low, diffuse light and heavy cloud cover reinforcing the somber tone of the mural. The weather conditions flatten shadows and enhance the subdued atmosphere, aligning visually with the subject matter.
Political and historical murals such as this remain a prominent feature of Belfast's urban landscape. They function as acts of remembrance, community storytelling, and public history, while also reflecting the ongoing complexity of how the past is interpreted and represented in shared space. The image documents how murals continue to shape identity, memory, and place in post-conflict Northern Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PNXX - This image shows a row of red leather-bound volumes of The New Book of Knowledge, a well-known encyclopaedia series historically aimed at children and young readers. The gold-lettered spines and alphabetical volume titles emphasise the formal presentation typical of printed reference works produced before the digital era.
Encyclopaedias such as The New Book of Knowledge were once a staple of home libraries, schools, and classrooms, serving as an important source of general information and structured learning. The worn bindings and traditional typography evoke themes of educational heritage, childhood learning, literacy, and analogue knowledge, contrasting strongly with modern online information sources.
The image is suitable for editorial and commercial use relating to education, publishing history, nostalgia, libraries, learning concepts, and the evolution of information access, as well as visual metaphors for knowledge, research, and scholarship.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JP0KCP - Roe Street Chapel also known as Kidd's Chapel, was built in 1829 by a breakaway group from St. George's Independent Chapel for Protestant Dissenters, which had been erected in 1822. This group of the congregation wanted a Congregational or Independent Chapel while the others wished to become part of the Established Church. As a result St. George's, in High Street, see below, was consecrated by the Bishop of Chester. Those Dissenters who had contributed to the original building as shareholders got their money back! The break-away group worshipped initially at Brunswick Methodist Church but then built Roe Street Chapel. In 1926 the congregation united with that of Frost's Chapel at Park Green to form Macclefield Congregational Church. The building was used for a time as a parish hall by the Roman Catholic St. Alban's church. It was used as a dance hall in the middle of the 20th century. It is now the Salvation Army Citadel
the former site of the citadel was in Mill Street just below the Majestic cinema.

The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Malpas. Its benefice is combined with those of St Chad, Tushingham, and St Mary, Whitewell

The chancel added in 1822 by Sir Jeffry Wyatville. In 189192, the church was restored by Douglas and Fordham, the organ chamber was added, the plaster roof was replaced with carved oak panelling, and oak furnishings were added. To celebrate the 2000 Millennium a new sundial was added to the south wall of the church
The church is built in red sandstone with a slate roof. The church is built in red sandstone with a slate roof.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MG4507 - Mothercare plc is a British retailer which specialises in products for expectant mothers and in general merchandise for children up to eight years of age. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE SmallCap Index.
Mothercare's United Kingdom subsidiary had over 150 stores in 2017, but by 2019 the number had been reduced to 79. In November 2019, the subsidiary was placed into administration, which led to closure of all the stores. Mothercare-branded products continue to be sold by Boots and the parent company continues to supply franchisees in other countries.
The company was founded by Selim Zilkha and Sir James Goldsmith in 1961. It was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1972.
In 1982, the company merged with Habitat to form Habitat Mothercare plc. In 1986, Habitat Mothercare plc merged with British Home Stores, to form Storehouse plc. In January 1996, it bought Children's World from Boots, and rebranded these stores as Mothercare World. In May 2000, the Bhs stores were sold to Philip Green, and Storehouse reverted to the Mothercare brand
In June 2007, Mothercare bought Early Learning Centre (ELC) for £85 million. In October 2007, it launched Gurgle, a pregnancy and parenting social networking website. In November 2009, Mothercare acquired the 50% of Gurgle that it did not already own
In November 2019, the company put Mothercare UK (and Mothercare Business Services) into administration. This meant all the UK shops and the UK website closed soon after. Mothercare International still trades profitably.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H550K8 - Cable theft costs millions of pounds each year. The total cost to the economy, taking into account the impact of freight delays to power stations, supermarkets etc and on passengers who miss appointments or have their day ruined, is even higher.
The theft of metal is a big problem for the railway as thieves target signalling cables, overhead power lines and even metal fences to sell for scrap.
Britain's rail network is designed to fail safe, which means that when a cable is cut trains are brought to a standstill. This protects passengers but can lead to lengthy, frustrating delays while the problem is found and fixed safely.
A large proportion of funding comes from the UK Government, so these thefts are, ultimately, costing taxpayers money.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4991347212 - 'Theme From Sparta FC - 'The Fall' - Play this track here.
\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
This music you may remember from BBC Saturday Sport was composed by MES (Mark E Smith) and The Fall. To get a feel for the show, check this out. Unfortunately, his beloved Man City had managed a 'Hopeless as usual performance' in their 0-0 draw against Blackburn.
The Fall are an English post-punk group, formed in Prestwich, Greater Manchester in 1976. The group has existed in some form ever since, and is essentially built around its founder and only constant member Mark E. Smith. First associated with the punk movement of the late 1970s, the group's music has gone through several stylistic changes over the years.
However, The Fall's music is often characterised by repetition, an abrasive guitar-driven sound, and is always underpinned by Smith's vocals and often cryptic lyrics, described by critic Steve Huey as 'abstract poetry filled with complicated wordplay, bone-dry wit, cutting social observations, and general misanthropy (sometimes more implied than clearly stated, but apparent nonetheless).'
The group's output is prolific. As of September 2010 they have released 28 studio albums, and more than triple that counting live albums and other releases. They have never achieved widespread public success beyond a handful of minor hit singles in the late 1980s, but have maintained a strong cult following. The band were long associated with BBC disc jockey John Peel, who championed them from early on in their career and cited The Fall as his favourite band, famously explaining, 'They are always different, they are always the same.'. The Fall were the only band who merited a seperate section in John Peel's record collection.
MES does manage the band like a football team, bringing in new talent and mavericks (many he encounters in the pub in Prestwich) acting as foreman. Dave Simpson's book 'The Fallen' is a great guide to the world of The Fall.
The last time I saw them was in Liverpool 2008 when MES had just turned 50. The band's Peel sessions were finally released recently by Castle Records in the six-CD box 'The Complete Peel Sessions 1978-2004'. This is a good starting point for getting to know the varied music of the band. The lastest album 'Your Future, Our Clutter' is also worth a listen to wet your appetite. Tell 'em I sent you.....

I have heard it said that many classic shots from the likes of Cartier Bresson and others would not be able to take many of their classic images these days. Very sad.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NCX0YG - The Beano (formerly The Beano Comic, also known as Beano) is a British anthology comic magazine created by Scottish publishing company DC Thomson. Its first issue was published on 30 July 1938,[1] and it became the world's longest-running comic issued weekly in 2018, publishing its 4000th issue in August 2019.[2] Popular and well-known comic strips and characters include Dennis the Menace, Minnie the Minx, The Bash Street Kids, Roger the Dodger, Billy Whizz, Lord Snooty and His Pals, Ivy the Terrible, General Jumbo, Jonah, and Biffo the Bear.
The Beano was planned as a pioneering children's magazine that contained mostly comic strips, in the style of American newspaper gag-a-days, as opposed to the more text story based Story papers that were immensely popular before the Second World War. In the present, its legacy is its misbehaving characters, escapist tales and anarchic humour with an audience of all ages. Beano is a multimedia franchise with spin-off books and Christmas annuals, a website, theme park rides, games, cartoon adaptations, and a production company.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H542A5 - Cable theft costs millions of pounds each year.
