Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JCP - This photograph shows an Underwood Standard manual typewriter, a landmark design in the history of writing and office technology. Finished in black metal with exposed mechanical components, the machine features a full QWERTY keyboard, circular glass-topped keys, ribbon spools, and a paper roller platen, all characteristic of early twentieth-century typewriter engineering.
The Underwood Standard series, produced from the late nineteenth century onwards, was among the first typewriters to achieve widespread commercial success. Its open-frame design allowed typists to see the text as it was being typed, a significant innovation at the time that helped establish Underwood as a dominant name in offices, newsrooms, and government departments around the world.
The image highlights the tactile, mechanical nature of analogue writing technology, with visible levers, springs, and typebars arranged in a semi-circular basket beneath the carriage. The worn surfaces and patina suggest long-term use, reinforcing the sense of durability and craftsmanship associated with these machines.
Typewriters such as this played a central role in the development of modern administration, journalism, and literature, shaping how documents were produced long before the arrival of computers and word processors. Images like this are commonly used to illustrate themes of writing history, vintage office culture, industrial design, mechanical craftsmanship, and the evolution of communication technology.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R0DWW2 - As Masham celebrated the King's Coronation, people in the small market town have spoken of hopes a buyer can be found for the Black Sheep Brewery.
Last week, Black Sheep announced administrators had been appointed after being hit very hard by the pandemic and a rise in costs.
The company, which employs around 50 members of staff, was founded in 1992 and has become a tourist hotspot bringing a significant amount of footfall to the town.
One local business owner told the Stray Ferret people are worried about a potential loss of income for their own businesses if the brewery doesn't survive.
Tim Ledbetter, owner of Bentley's of Masham, said:
With it being such a big employer, there is then a big knock-on effect.
We get a lot of trade from visitors of Black Sheep ? it could be detrimental.
The brewery reported turnover of ?14.3 million as of March 31, 2022, according to its most recent accounts. However, it also stated a pre-tax loss of ?1.18 million, compared to ?862,871 profit in the previous year

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PK3EX3 - Bully beef (also known as corned beef in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Indonesia and other Commonwealth countries as well as the United States) is a variety of meat made from finely minced corned beef in a small amount of gelatin. The name bully beef likely comes from the French bouilli (meaning boiled) in Napoleonic times, or possibly from the head of a bull depicted on the popular Hereford brand of canned corned beef. The cans have a distinctive oblong shape. Bully beef and hardtack biscuits were the main field rations of the British Army from the Boer War to World War II. It is commonly served sliced in a corned beef sandwich. Potato-based dishes, such as hash and hotch-potch, in which the potatoes and beef are stewed together, and corned beef hash, where pre-boiled potatoes and corned beef are mixed with Worcestershire sauce then fried, are also made. Tinned corned beef is also used in France. Some places where British troops were present in the 20th century (especially during World War II), such as Malta, have adopted bully beef as part of their national cuisine. In February 2009, the British Defence Equipment and Support announced that they would be phasing out bully beef from ration packs as part of the introduction of the new Multi-Climate Ration Packs until this change was reversed due to backlash
The next development was the key open can. Both J. Osterhoudt, in 1866, and Ars??ne Saupiquet in 1882, had patented key open cans, with possibly only Saupiquet achieving commercial success, but it was not until a cheaper method of production was developed by John Zimmerman in 1892[24] that American companies adopted the innovation, with Cudahy's, Libby's and Armour soon producing corned beef in the easy to open tins. The British Government was slow to adopt the new cans, and in 1898 the Civil and Military Gazette saw it as scandalous that they were still supplying meat in unget-at-able tins when the new cans were available

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PHJ91W - Scots 'battle' to get cash after banks and ATMs shut
Scots are facing an uphill battle to access their cash after a large number of bank and cash machine closures, a consumer organisation has warned.
Research by Which? found 339 Scottish bank branches had closed their doors since 2015, while 290 ATMs had been withdrawn in the past year.
It urged the UK government to appoint a regulator to protect access to cash.
HM Treasury said it recognised the continued importance of cash, especially for more vulnerable people.
It added the existing payment systems regulator was closely monitoring developments within ATM provision.
Which? said the closure of cash machines, the majority of which were free to use, had hit Scotland harder than other parts of the UK because of its many rural communities, combined with an already devastated bank branch network.
In Scotland, withdrawals from machines were down just 3.3% in 2017-18, compared with larger drops of 8.5% and 7.7% in London and the south east of England respectively.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBHY - The National Covid Memorial Wall in London is a public mural painted by volunteers to commemorate victims of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom. Started in March 2021 and stretching more than one-third mile (five hundred metres) along the South Bank of the River Thames, opposite the Palace of Westminster, the mural consists of approximately 150,000 red and pink hearts, intending to have one for each of the casualties of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom at the time of the mural's commencement. The intent was for each heart to be individually hand-painted
utterly unique, just like the loved ones we've lost
The mural was organized by campaign group Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice, with the help of the campaign group Led By Donkeys. Volunteers cleaned the wall and removed graffiti before hand-painting approximately 150,000 red hearts over 10 days from 29 March 2021. Bereaved families filled these hearts with names of lost loved ones and messages, with more continued to be added over the subsequent months. Through the project was started without council permission, it gained widespread support and public recognition so has not yet been removed by authorities. As the text faded, volunteers have also traced over writing with permanent black marker pen to ensure their longevity.
The mural stretches more than one-third mile (five hundred metres) along the South Bank of the River Thames from Westminster Bridge to Lambeth Bridge, opposite the Palace of Westminster. Being outside of St Thomas' Hospital, it also encompasses an older plaque dedicated to the 1994-6 human BSE outbreak.
On 29 March 2021, Labour Party leader Keir Starmer visited the mural, which he described as a remarkable memorial, before calling on Boris Johnson to visit the mural personally and engage with the families of the deceased. Johnson later visited the wall for quiet reflection and was criticised by the co-founder of the group, who said that the visit, was a sham

HISTORICAL NOTE: a notable early example of the larger hotels which were erected in some resorts before the great 'railway hotels'. The Promenade was laid out in 1818 as a tree-lined avenue from the Colonnade in the High Street to the Sherborne Spa (later named the Imperial Spa), on the site of which the Queen's Hotel now stands. By 1826 it was a carriage drive with spacious gravelled walk on either side. Notable guests to the Hotel include Edward VII (when Prince of Wales), Prince Louis Jerome Napoleon, the Rajah of Sarawak, Elgar, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The hotel opened 21 July 1838, its first lessee was Richard Liddell. It had over 120 bedrooms, 25 sitting rooms

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNBYA4 - The grand early perpendicular Cotswold wool church, Church of St James, with its medieval altar frontals (c. 1500), cope (c. 1400), and 17th century monuments includes a monument to silk merchant Sir Baptist Hicks and his family. As well, the Grade I listed Church of St James includes a plaque to William Grevel, described as the flower of the wool merchants of all England. His home, the Grade I listed Grevel's House, was built c. 1380. It is not open to visitors. Chipping Campden is a market town in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. It is notable for its terraced High Street, dating from the 14th century to the 17th century. (Chipping is from Old English c?ping, 'market', 'market-place'
the same element is found in other towns such as Chipping Norton, Chipping Sodbury and Chipping (now High) Wycombe.)
A wool trading centre in the Middle Ages, Chipping Campden enjoyed the patronage of wealthy wool merchants, most notably William Greville (d.1401). The High Street is lined with buildings built from locally quarried oolitic limestone known as Cotswold stone, and boasts a wealth of vernacular architecture. Much of the town centre is a conservation area which has helped to preserve the original buildings. The town is an end point of the Cotswold Way, a 102-mile long-distance footpath.
Chipping Campden has hosted its own Olympic Games since 1612.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPB8W9 - Often called street pianos or public pianos these instruments are placed in public areas and encourage passersby to come and play. They have been observed all around the world
These pianos provide passerbys a chance to relax and take a break from a hectic pace of life. Seeking out these pianos can be difficult, because the pianos are relatively rare and their locations mostly unknown. This website, pianos.pub, attempts to catalog all locations of all known public pianos to facilitate access to anyone and everyone.
Where did the idea come from?
Public instruments have been available for hundreds of years. The idea of a street piano was popularized in the early part of this millenium. The idea started to take off in 2013 when revolutionized by organizations to promote public pianos in parks and plazas, most notably the Play Me, I'm Your's campaign initiated by British artist Luke Jerram in 2008. Since then, the number of piano sightings has increased steadily every year, often peaking during the summer time.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JGM7AY - The Imperial Typewriter Company was a British manufacturer of typewriters based in Leicester, England.
The company was founded by Hidalgo Moya, an American-Spanish engineer who lived in England. After first building the Moya typewriter, he set up the Imperial Typewriter Company in Leicester in 1911 with local businessmen John Gordon Chattaway, William Arthur Evans and Joseph Wallis Goddard. It stopped manufacturing typewriters when electric models and then word processors and personal computers became popular, causing typewriter sales to fall.
The company was acquired by Litton Industries in 1966, and gradually introduced Royal Typewriter Company models largely assembled from parts shipped from Hartford, Connecticut, United States. In May 1974, Asian workers at the Imperial Typewriter Company in Leicester went on strike over unequal bonus payments and discrimination in promotion. The shop stewards committee and Transport & General Workers Union branch refused their support, but the strikers stayed on strike for almost 14 weeks. The manufacture of typewriters ceased at Leicester and Hull in 1975

The famed mosaic artworks that once adorned Manchester's alternative shopping emporium Afflecks are to return ? with acclaimed Manc artist Mark Kennedy to create a host of new works piece by piece
Mark's mosaic masterpieces of city icons like music impressario Tony Wilson, footballer George Best and Smiths frontman Morrissey became a much-loved city landmark hung on the exterior of Afflecks ? but when the site was taken over by developer Bruntwood in 2008 they were kept by the previous manager.
But now Mark tells The Diary he has been commissioned to create a raft of new mosaics that will once again decorate the arches of the old building that corners a huge site off Oldham Street, Tib Street and Dale Street in the Northern Quarter.
He says: I suppose my artwork is Afflecks, that's what I do, it's what I'm known for. It has been my gallery for the past 12 years or so, so obviously I'm happy to be asked back.
The first, that depicts the famous On The Sixth Day God Created Man...Chester quote, will return this week on the Afflecks Arcade.
And Mark, pictured here in his studio, is now hard at work on the second, an image of labrador Bruce, who the Black Dog Ballroom bar in the basement of Afflecks is named after.
Mark then has plans to create new mosaics of Manc icons, including a special Factory Records piece, to commemorate the label's late, great Tony Wilson, New Order manager Rob Gretton and legendary music producer Martin Hannett, among others

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYDX6 - The pipe organ is a musical instrument that produces sound by driving pressurized air (called wind) through the organ pipes selected from a keyboard. Because each pipe produces a single pitch, the pipes are provided in sets called ranks, each of which has a common timbre and volume throughout the keyboard compass. Most organs have many ranks of pipes of differing timbre, pitch, and volume that the player can employ singly or in combination through the use of controls called stops.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF220D - The common Bluebell, here in Lymm, Cheshire, (Hyacinthoides non-scripta to be precise) grows from bulbs and can be expected about four weeks after daffadils in Britain. By the time they appear, frosts should be receeding and days getting noticably warmer.
Other common names for it include auld man's bell, bluebell, calverkeys, culverkeys, English bluebell, jacinth, ring-o'-bells, wilde hyacint, and wood bells (probably as they appear in shaded woodland almost spontainiously.
Bees are a favourite to pollinate these plants. Their black seeds may survive long periods of time emerging after several years' absence if suitable conditions recur. The seedlings can flower in two years from seed and as a result, bluebells can quickly spread to form a carpet in suitable conditions.
In spring, many north-western European woods are covered by dense carpets of this flower, these are commonly referred to as bluebell woods. In my youth that was the common name for a large wood beside the railway commuter line between Hadfield and Manchester. In spring it did produce a carpet of blue.
The presence of large numbers of bluebells is often used as an indicator species to identify ancient woodland, particularly in the East of England and Lincolnshire. It is estimated that 70% of all common bluebells are found in Great Britain.
In the UK the common bluebell is a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Landowners are prohibited from removing common bluebells on their land for sale and it is a criminal offence to remove the bulbs of wild common bluebells. This legislation was strengthened in 1998 under Schedule 8 of the Act making any trade in wild common bluebell bulbs or seeds an offence. So respect the little blue fellows!

Infra Red Film from Kodak (HIE) has been used here. This film used to have to be loaded, unloaded and developed in absolute darkness. Results could be rewarding though as this shot on a hot summers day shows. Blue sky becomes inky black, warm skin glows. Foliage comes up like snow.
To get something similar with any summer shot with blue sky and green grass, in Photoshop try the following:

Data from the UK's main cash machine network reveals that ATM transactions fell by up to 68% during the first national lockdown
The UK's main cash machine network LINK has published data showing that despite a 37% fall in ATM transactions in 2020, UK adults on average still withdrew more than ?1,500 each from cash machines.
Scotland saw the steepest fall, with adults withdrawing almost ?900 less than they did in 2019.
On average, UK adults visited ATMs 12 times less in 2020 than they did in 2019.
In recent years, as consumers use alternative payment methods such as contactless cards or online payments, ATM transactions have fallen on average around 10% year-on-year.
However, in April 2020, when the UK went into the first national lockdown, ATM transactions fell initially by up to 68%.
Despite subsequent lockdowns, on average more than ?1.6bn was still withdrawn for cash machines every week for the rest of 2020.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R0DWWH - As Masham celebrated the King's Coronation, people in the small market town have spoken of hopes a buyer can be found for the Black Sheep Brewery.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PKA5M9 - The Liverpool Passion Plays tell the story of the Passion of Christ, including Jesus' arrest, trial and crucifixion.
Using the Cathedral's architecture and artwork as a backdrop, the audience watch the story of Jesus unfold, starting as a young boy, and witnessing his entry into Jerusalem, his betrayal by Judas, and his trial and crucifixion.
The performance will use the vast central space of Liverpool Cathedral as a backdrop with the crucifixion scene taking place on our very own Calvary, high above the audience, on the Dulverton Bridge.
The performance combines music, script and liturgy to demonstrate what Christ's suffering and resurrection means for us today. The performance has been put together by cast, crew and musicians who are volunteers from the cathedral's congregations, choirs and young peoples' groups, and the public.'

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PHJ91P - Amount withdrawn from cash machines fell EVEN further last year and expert says usage will never return to pre-pandemic levels
Number of cash withdrawals fell 6% last year after 40% collapse in 2020
The average Briton withdrew a third less cash last year than they did in 2019
One expert says number of withdrawals won't return to pre-covid levels
People continued to use less cash last year with new figures showing the number of withdrawals from ATMs fell 6 per cent annually.
A total of ?79billion was withdrawn from cash machines in 2021 compared to ?81billion in 2020, according to data by Link, the UK's main cash machine network.
There was also a 7 per cent decline in cash machine transactions last year, which includes withdrawals and balance enquiries, falling from just over 1.6billion to 1.5billion.
This means the average withdrawal per person in the UK was ?1,462 last year, visiting an ATM around 18 times.
In 2019, prior to the pandemic, the average withdrawal per person in the UK was ?2,193 meaning the typical person is withdrawing two thirds of what they were before Covid-19, when the advice was to not use cash but contactless debit and credit card payments instead

Exclusive: Labour leader plans a new elected chamber after accusing successive Tory governments of handing peerages to ?lackeys and donors'
Keir Starmer will abolish the House of Lords and replace it with a new elected chamber as part of plans to restore trust in politics.
In a sweeping constitutional overhaul, the Labour leader has told the party's peers that he wants to strip politicians of the power to make appointments to the Lords as part of the first-term programme of a Labour government. Starmer said that the public's faith in the political system had been undermined by successive Tory leaders handing peerages to lackeys and donors.
It is understood that Labour will hold a consultation on the composition and size of a new chamber as well as immediate reforms to the current appointments process. Final proposals will be included in the party's next election manifesto.
It comes after a series of rows over peerages. Boris Johnson made a number of controversial appointments, including his friend Evgeny Lebedev, who owns the Evening Standard. He is expected to appoint political allies and junior aides as part of a forthcoming list.
Meanwhile, Liz Truss is also said to be planning a resignation list of new peers despite a disastrous leadership that lasted just seven weeks.
In a meeting last week, Starmer told Labour peers that there was now strong support for reform of the Lords, both across party lines and among the public. He outlined some very clear principles for reform, including that any new chamber should be elected by voters rather than appointed by politicians.
I want to be clear that we do need to restore the trust of the public in every part of the United Kingdom in our system of government, he said. House of Lords reform is just one part of that ? People have lost faith in the ability of politicians and politics to bring about change, he said
