A planning application which would involve the demolition of the Longfield shopping centre is expected by the autumn of 2023
?100m plans to redevelop Prestwich is to take a further step forward with business owners and the town's residents being asked to contribute to its shape. They have announced dates next month for a ?community conversation' on its plans. The project called Your Prestwich states its intention to ?transform the Longfield Centre and cement Prestwich as one of the best places to live in the North West'.
People can attend a drop-in session on Sunday, January 29, 2023 from 11am ? 3pm at Prestwich Library, Longfield Centre where the project team will be on hand to discuss the scheme. The announcement of the 2023 conversation follows Bury Council and Muse forming the Prestwich Regeneration LLP joint venture in November 2022

The chain has been unable to find emergency investment to save its 400 shops across the UK.
Wilko had been working to secure a white knight for the business which has been trading since 1930.
The firm's boss, Mark Jackson, said management had left no stone unturned in its attempts to save the business.
But must concede that with regret, we've no choice but to take the difficult decision to enter into administration, he said.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFEPXF - The exterior of the Reach PLC Media Wales building on Six Park Street in Cardiff city centre. Media Wales is one of Wales's largest media organisations and is the publisher of major Welsh news titles, including national and regional newspapers and associated digital platforms.
The modern building forms part of Cardiff's wider city-centre regeneration, reflecting the shift of traditional newspaper publishing towards integrated digital and multimedia operations. The prominent signage illustrates the continued physical presence of media organisations within urban centres, even as journalism increasingly operates across online platforms.
Photographed in daylight, the image documents contemporary media infrastructure in Wales and is suitable for editorial use relating to journalism, publishing, regional media, freedom of the press, and the changing nature of news production in the United Kingdom.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RFEPY5 - Jobcentre Plus (Welsh: Canolfan byd Gwaith
Scottish Gaelic: Ionad Obrach is Eile) is a brand used by the Department for Work and Pensions in the United Kingdom.
From 2002 to 2011, Jobcentre Plus was an executive agency which reported directly to the Minister of State for Employment. It was formed by the amalgamation of two agencies, the Employment Service, which operated Jobcentres, and the Benefits Agency, which ran social security offices.
Role of Jobcentre Plus
Jobcentre Plus was an executive agency of the Department for Work and Pensions of the government of the United Kingdom between 2002 and 2011. The functions of Jobcentre Plus were subsequently provided directly through the Department for Work and Pensions. The agency provided services primarily to those attempting to find employment and to those requiring the issuing of a financial provision due to, in the first case, lack of employment, of an allowance to assist with the living costs and expenditure intrinsic to the effort to achieve employment, or in all other cases the provision of social-security benefit as the result of a person without an income from employment due to illness-incapacity including drug addiction. The organisation acted from within the government's agenda for community and social welfare. Services were provided in the first instance via in-house job-advisors and advisors contacted via telephony. An information technology system known as the Labour Market System (LMS) contained the personal details of job seekers and advertised job vacancies for employers within each of the public offices.
Between 2012 and 2018 a government website named Universal Jobmatch was used whereby jobseekers could search for employment and employers could upload and manage their own vacancies whilst searching for prospective employees.
Claims may be made for working-age benefits such as Jobseeker's Allowance, Incapacity Benefit, Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support or the new Universal Credit

Royal Mail workers poised for strikes after Easter as talks falter
CWU union lines up action as MP brands bosses' threat to put service into administration as ?scandalous'
Postal workers at Royal Mail are poised to stage a fresh wave of strikes after Easter as talks stalled, amid a scandalous threat by bosses to put the company into administration.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU), which represents about 115,000 postal workers, is close to agreeing multiple strike dates to take place later in April, the Guardian understands, in the long-running dispute between the company and union. A formal announcement of the strike dates is expected this week.
Relations between Royal Mail executives and its workforce have been strained during the months-long dispute over pay and working practices. The situation escalated last night when the Guardian revealed the company's board has threatened to put the loss-making postal service ? the regulated UK entity that delivers to every address in the country ? into a form of government-handled administration if a deal could not be agreed

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M36969 - Peloton Interactive, Inc. is an American exercise equipment and media company based in New York City. The company's products are stationary bicycles, treadmills, indoor rowers equipped with Internet-connected touch screens that steam live and on-demand fitness classes through a subscription service. The equipment includes built-in sensors that track metrics such power output, providing users with real-time feedback on their performance and leaderboard rankings to compete with other users.
Peloton charges a US$44 monthly membership fee to access classes and additional features on their exercise equipment, or $12.99 for users only accessing the content via app or website
In 2011, John Foley, an executive at Barnes & Noble in New York City, pitched his colleague, Tom Cortese, on the idea that technology could make it possible for people with little time to get the full experience of working out in a high-end studio cycling class in their homes. Peloton Interactive was founded in January 2012
The company raised $400,000 in seed money in February 2012 and another $3.5 million in December 2012. Peloton sold its first bike on Kickstarter in 2013 with an early bird price tag of $1,500. Their first Internet-connected stationary bicycle with a tablet was released in 2014. The company also opened showrooms in shopping centers around the US, for people to test out the machines, and sales quickly soared, behind the entertaining classes and cycling instructors, and the online community of riders
Sales increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic as home gyms became more popular during the COVID-19 lockdowns. However, the rapid increase in demand caused shipping delays, with customers receiving their products months late, leading some to cancel orders

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPB8TM - Arkell's Brewery was established in Swindon, England by John Arkell in 1843, and has been owned by members of the Arkell family since its establishment. It is Swindon's oldest company, built initially on the massive expansion of Swindon in the Victorian era with the arrival of the railways and the decision by Isambard Kingdom Brunel to site the Great Western Railway Works in Swindon in 1841.
Brewery
Originally a steam brewery, with the engines now being powered by electricity, Arkell's is a tower brewery which works on the principle that raw materials are fed into the top of the building and beer comes out in casks at the bottom.
The brewery building is a Grade II listed building and the site has been designated an Urban Conservation Area by Swindon Borough Council.
Distribution
The brewery owns 92 pubs in the Swindon area and surrounds, including locations in Oxford, Newbury, Reading, Cheltenham, Gloucester and Ascot
and sells its products to free houses in the Thames Valley and London.
In 2005, the brewery entered into a contract with rail company First Great Western to have its beer stocked in their buffet cars

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JEKRBE - The RMT was formed in 1990 through a merger of the National Union of Railwaymen (NUR) and the National Union of Seamen (NUS) to create a single transport industry trade union. Its president is Alex Gordon and its general secretary Mick Lynch
Rail union RMT launch 3 days of national strike action across the railway network.
Over 50,000 railway workers will walkout as part of 3 days of national strike action later this month, in the biggest dispute on the network since 1989.
The union will shut down the country's railway network on 21st, 23rd and 25th June, due to the inability of the rail employers to come to a negotiated settlement with RMT.
Network Rail and the train operating companies have subjected their staff to multiyear pay freezes and plan to cut thousands of jobs which will make the railways unsafe.
Despite intense talks with the rail bosses, The RMT has not been able to secure a pay proposal nor a guarantee of no compulsory redundancies.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A989TW - A Post-it Note (or sticky note) is a small piece of paper with a re-adherable strip of glue on its back, made for temporarily attaching notes to documents and other surfaces. A low-tack pressure-sensitive adhesive allows the notes to be easily attached, removed and even re-posted elsewhere without leaving residue. Originally small yellow squares, Post-it Notes and related products are available in various colors, shapes, sizes and adhesive strengths. As of 2019, there are at least 26 documented colors of Post-it Notes.
Although 3M's patent expired in 1997, Post-it and the original notes' distinctive yellow color remain registered company trademarks, with terms such as repositionable notes used for similar offerings manufactured by competitors. While use of the trademark 'Post-it' in a representative sense refers to any sticky note, no legal authority has ever held the trademark to be generic.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AERR7G - Thomas Cook Group plc was a British global travel group. It was formed on 19 June 2007 by the merger of Thomas Cook AG (itself the successor to Thomas Cook & Son) and MyTravel Group.[9] The group operated in two separate segments: a tour operator and an airline. It also operated travel agencies in Europe. On 23 September 2019 Thomas Cook Group and all UK entities went into compulsory liquidation.
Thomas Cook was listed on both the London Stock Exchange and the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. The Thomas Cook Group ceased trading on 23 September 2019. Approximately 21,000 worldwide employees were left without jobs (including 9,000 UK staff) and 600,000 customers (150,000 from the UK) were left abroad, triggering the UK's largest peacetime repatriation.
After the collapse, segments of the company were purchased by others, including the travel stores in the UK, the airlines, the Thomas Cook name and logo, the hotel brands and the tour operators.
In February 2019, the Financial Times newspaper said that the Thomas Cook Group had received bids for its airline business, which includes Condor, and also the company as a whole. In March 2019, Thomas Cook UK announced 21 travel office closures and the redundancy of 300 staff, justifying the decision with the fact that 64% of bookings had been made online in 2018
On 9 October 2019, independent travel agent Hays Travel announced that it had acquired all 555 former Thomas Cook travel stores in the UK, and planned to re-employ a significant number of former employees. Hays, which already operated 190 of their own stores, expected to retain over 25% of the retail staff, saving roughly 2,500 jobs

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K41KPN - It has been announced that it will shut permanently on Wednesday, May 12. The three-storey unit is currently among the final 49 stores still in operation.
It is unknown what will become of it when Debenhams closes but, in a recent interview, Golden Square director Ian Cox said there was interest in the unit.
After scraping through previous years, the pandemic saw Debenhams finally fall into administration.
In January, online fashion retailer Boohoo bought the Debenhams brand and website in a ?55million rescue deal that will see the company operate as an online-only retailer from next year.
Debenhams in Golden Square reopened on April 12 for a final closing down sale when non-essential retailers were given the green light to reopen.
The number of jobs lost in Warrington and altogether as a result is still unknown, but with stores closing across the 242-year-old brand, it is unlikely many of the remaining 12,000 jobs will be saved.
A Debenhams spokesman said: We are now heading into the final days of our closing down sale and this is the very last chance for our customers to take advantage of some incredible deals.
With up to 80 per cent off across our remaining stores, customers are urged to shop now while stocks last.
Over the next 10 days, Debenhams will close its doors on the high street for the final time in its 242-year history.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTACG - Lever Brothers was a British manufacturing company founded in 1885 by brothers William Hesketh Lever (1851?1925) and James Darcy Lever (1854?1916). They invested in and successfully promoted a new soap-making process invented by chemist William Hough Watson. In 1930, Lever Brothers merged with Margarine Unie to form Unilever.
Starting with a small grocery business begun by his father, William Lever and his brother James entered the soap business in 1885 by buying a small soap works in Warrington. The brothers teamed up with a Bolton chemist, William Hough Watson, who became an early business partner. Watson invented the process which resulted in a new soap, using glycerin and vegetable oils such as palm oil, rather than tallow. The resulting soap was a good, free-lathering soap, at first named Honey Soap then later named Sunlight Soap. Production reached 450 tons per week by 1888. Larger premises were built on marshes at Bromborough Pool on the Wirral Peninsula at what became Port Sunlight. Though the company was named Lever Brothers, William Lever's brother and co-director James never took a major part in running the business. He fell ill in 1895, probably as a result of diabetes, and resigned his directorship two years later

\u00bfWhats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
Well its taken 90 shots before an excuse for a Primal Scream track.
Primal Scream date from 1982 back in Glasgow, Scotland. The band performed throughout 1982-1984, but their career did not take off until Bobby Gillespie left his position as drummer of The Jesus and Mary Chain. The band were a key part of the mid-1980s indie pop scene, but eventually moved away from their more jangly sound, taking on more psychedelic and then garage rock influences, before incorporating a dance music element to their sound.
The 1991 somewhat Acidhouse inspired album Screamadelica was the one that broke the band into the mainstream. It won the first Mercury Music Prize in 1992. Its best heard in its 2 x LP vinyl incarnation.
Bobby's school friend was Alan McGee, who took Gillespie to his first gig, a Thin Lizzy concert. McGee and Gillespie were heavily influenced by punk rock, and they joined a local punk band, The Drains, in 1978. McGee soon moved south to London, Gillespie staying in SE Glasgow.
The band still tour and I have some shots from w=33062170@N08&

Screamadelica (go for the 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) is an excellent starting point to get to know the band. Alternatively checkout the Dirty Hits compilation.

Perhaps prison is not the place to have a strong sex drive. Sex can be a terror. There could also me many straight / gay / homosexual predators wanting others. The lonely sometimes stray from their norm and be curious. Other times it may be for favours. More tabs, blow or less pain.
Pornography probably does not help either, maybe it makes it worse. Members of staff do have sex with inmates, some looking to be seduced, some seducing. Where a guard rapes or assaults a prisoner, the guard generally goes free and the prisoner is prosecuted as a pervert.
Tattoos can have special meanings in prison. A convicts skin canvass can say a lot about him and his history. Some are:
Clocks without hands - Doing Time
Eight Balls - Unlucky, IE behind the 8 ball
One laughing face, one crying face - Play now, pay later
Face of female crying - Someone outside waiting
Swastika covered with a three leaf clover - Aryan Brotherhood

With new friends moving in its always difficult decorating a new place. Dave prefers more conservative celestrial blue while Nickolas has more a leaning for a yellow golden fern. Its looking like whatever happens it will take at least three coats of magnolia to paint over Gordons old choice of Fire cracker red. when we are finished blue and yellow will mix into a nice deep green. Probably a fitting reminder that Britain elected its first green MP in Brighton only last week.
Under the UK parliamentary system of government, a hung parliament (also known as a minority parliament, a balanced parliament or no overall control) is a legislature in which no political party has an absolute majority of seats.
This situation is normal in many legislatures with proportional representation such as the parliaments of Germany and Ireland, or in legislatures with strong regional parties
in such legislatures the term 'hung parliament' is rarely used since this is the typical outcome of an election.
However in nations in which the first-past-the-post voting system in single member districts is used to elect parliament, such as the United Kingdom and Canada, a coalition government or 'hung parliament' tends to be less common, as in these circumstances one party will usually hold enough seats to form a majority, often without a plurality of votes on a national basis. To resolve a hung parliament will usually result in either a coalition government, a minority government \u2013 or even a dissolution of parliament and a fresh election. It is these who will be choosing the paint tonight, in one of Londons most iconic addresses.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JEKRB7 - The RMT was formed in 1990 through a merger of the National Union of Railwaymen (NUR) and the National Union of Seamen (NUS) to create a single transport industry trade union.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2KDPYAW - A printed circuit board (PCB
also printed wiring board or PWB) is a medium used in electrical and electronic engineering to connect electronic components to one another in a controlled manner. It takes the form of a laminated sandwich structure of conductive and insulating layers: each of the conductive layers is designed with an artwork pattern of traces, planes and other features (similar to wires on a flat surface) etched from one or more sheet layers of copper laminated onto and/or between sheet layers of a non-conductive substrate. Electrical components may be fixed to conductive pads on the outer layers in the shape designed to accept the component's terminals, generally by means of soldering, to both electrically connect and mechanically fasten them to it. Another manufacturing process adds vias: plated-through holes that allow interconnections between layers
The Austrian engineer Paul Eisler invented the printed circuit as part of a radio set while working in the UK around 1936. In 1941 a multi-layer printed circuit was used in German magnetic influence naval mines
Around 1943 the USA began to use the technology on a large scale to make proximity fuzes for use in World War II. Such fuzes required an electronic circuit that could withstand being fired from a gun, and could be produced in quantity
Motorola was an early leader in bringing the process into consumer electronics, announcing in August 1952 the adoption of plated circuits in home radios after six years of research and a $1M investment
Originally, every electronic component had wire leads, and a PCB had holes drilled for each wire of each component. The component leads were then inserted through the holes and soldered to the copper PCB traces. This method of assembly is called through-hole construction. In 1949, Moe Abramson and Stanislaus F. Danko of the United States Army Signal Corps developed the Auto-Sembly process in which component leads were inserted into a copper foil interconnection

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D9466J - The King's became famous for being a venue belonging to the theatre empire Howard & Wyndham. The theatre was originally commissioned by the Edinburgh Building Company Ltd, chaired by Robert C. Buchanan. The King's was built as a rival to the successful Royal Lyceum Theatre, which had been established for over twenty years. Buchanan was experienced in the industry as he already managed a large number of provincial variety theatres, however this was his most ambitious project yet.
The foundation stone was laid on 18 August 1906 by Andrew Carnegie, with copies of the current newspaper and coins buried underneath. During construction the owners experienced financial troubles being unable to pay the final costs to the contractor William Stewart Cruikshank and to the architects, surveyors and lawyers, at which stage the operating rights were transferred to a new King's Theatre Company, of which Cruikshank was a major shareholder. Buchanan was managing director and he took on the day-to-day running of the King's, with Cruikshank`s son A. Stewart Cruikshank as manager. An attempt to sell the theatre to Howard & Wyndham Ltd chaired by Michael Simons, and therefore clear the debts, failed and the Cruikshank family decided to run it themselves with A Stewart Cruikshank becoming managing director in June 1908
The theatre is home to Edinburgh's mainstream annual pantomime, which is produced by Qdos Entertainment. The theatre is now run by the Capital Theatres which also controls the Festival Theatre. The theatre is also an important venue over the Festival period. Plans are now underway for a new refurbishment scheme to bring the theatre up to modern day standards
The theatre's interior and exterior were designed separately. James Davidson designed the building itself. The interior of the King's was designed by JD Swanston
