Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM97HX - A tight, documentary close-up of a blue civic plaque mounted on a red brick wall at Stockport railway station in Greater Manchester. The plaque headline reads CHANNEL ISLAND EVACUEES and the main inscription is fully legible, explaining that in June, July and August 1940 Stockport welcomed over 1200 evacuees from the Channel Islands, and that the children were cared for by local families until the islands were liberated in May 1945. Around the lower edge, the wording THE METROPOLITAN BOROUGH OF STOCKPORT and a small municipal crest reinforce the official, local-government nature of the marker, giving the image strong value for accurate editorial captioning and search visibility.
The composition is simple and direct, designed to prioritise the readable text and the classic blue-plaque format. The brickwork texture and the slightly weathered surface add a sense of permanence and everyday realism, suggesting a plaque that has become part of the station environment rather than a staged memorial. Light appears cool and natural, consistent with winter or cold-season conditions, with no strong shadows, so the plaque reads clearly and evenly.
As a stock image, it works well for editorial uses around World War II remembrance, wartime evacuation, refugees and displacement, and the social history of communities taking in children and families during conflict. It is also useful for education, heritage, and local history storytelling, especially where an image is needed to represent Channel Islands evacuation history in mainland Britain. The station setting is significant, since rail travel was central to evacuation journeys and arrivals, and the plaque serves as a quiet reminder of how major wartime events intersected with ordinary civic places

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DCX6B8 - A campaign poster by Housing Action Now displayed on a street pole in Dublin city centre, advertising an All-Island Housing Demonstration scheduled for Saturday 5 July at the Garden of Remembrance, Parnell Square East, Dublin 1 (D01 AX82). The poster calls for action on the housing crisis, framing housing as a political choice and urging collective mobilisation in support of communities affected by rising rents, homelessness and housing insecurity.
The Garden of Remembrance is a highly symbolic civic space in Dublin, often used as a gathering point for demonstrations and public assemblies. Its use as the meeting location situates the housing protest within a broader tradition of political expression and remembrance in Ireland's capital.
The poster references CATU (Community Action Tenants Union), a grassroots organisation active across Ireland campaigning on tenants' rights, housing affordability and security of tenure. Groups such as Housing Action Now and CATU have become increasingly visible as Ireland's housing crisis has intensified, driven by factors including supply shortages, high rents, rising house prices and demographic pressure.
Displayed against a backdrop of brick residential buildings, the poster visually connects protest messaging with the everyday urban environment most affected by housing pressures. Images like this are commonly used editorially to illustrate stories about housing policy, social movements, cost-of-living crises and contemporary Irish politics.
Photographed in daylight with legible text and surrounding urban context, the image offers strong editorial value for use in journalism, academic discussion, social policy analysis and reporting on public protest and civic activism in Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3CGCJR3 - This image shows the illuminated red neon FREIGHT ISLAND sign and arrow fixed to a weathered brick wall at Freight Island, part of the Depot Mayfield redevelopment in Manchester city centre. The signage sits on a robust industrial façade, the sort of hard-wearing urban fabric that once belonged to the working rail and warehouse landscape around Piccadilly and the Mayfield area.
What makes the sign work, commercially and editorially, is the layering. It is not just a neon sign, it is a very deliberate bit of identity and wayfinding that signals a new use for an old structure. The red glow and arrow shout nightlife and movement, while the brickwork, ageing mortar lines and stray tufts of greenery quietly keep the building's industrial past in the frame. Manchester does this a lot: keep the bones, change the purpose, then brand it hard.
Freight Island has become associated with the city's contemporary leisure economy: street food, bars, live events and big crowds, wrapped inside a repurposed industrial shell. The sign captures that shift in one hit, industrial heritage reframed as a destination. Shot in daylight, the neon still reads clearly against the brick, giving buyers a strong, legible urban detail image that can illustrate stories about regeneration, city culture, hospitality, placemaking and Manchester's continuing transformation.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R1WX6X - From Here' by Turner Prize shortlisted artist Nathan Coley is a landmark new co-commission between Liverpool Biennial and Culture Liverpool on Liverpool's UNESCO World Heritage Waterfront.
The text-based light sculpture is made up of the words From Here, All the Worlds Futures, From Here, All the Worlds Pasts. Inspired by the writing of German philosopher, Walter Benjamin, and acknowledging the curator, Okwui Enwezor's influential exhibition All The World's Futures at Venice Biennale 2015, Nathan Coley's expansion of the phrase presents a new meaning that reinforces the power of Liverpool as a place, its history and speaks to the hope for the future.
Measuring twenty metres in length, the largest text work made to date by the artist, has been designed specifically to wrap around the four sides of the St. George's Dock Pumping Station, an iconic Victorian red brick building located on Mann Island in the heart of the city, and still used on a daily basis by the building's owners Network Rail.
Nathan Coley lives and works in Glasgow. This will be the first time he has shown in Liverpool since his work was featured in the Turner Prize Exhibition at Tate Liverpool in 2007, for which he was shortlisted.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2MKF91K - Jarvis Branson Cocker (born 19 September 1963) is an English musician and radio presenter. As the founder, frontman, lyricist and only consistent member of the band Pulp, he became a figurehead of the Britpop genre of the mid-1990s. Following Pulp's hiatus, Cocker has pursued a solo career, and for seven years he presented the BBC Radio 6 Music show Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service.
Cocker gained international attention when he invaded the stage at the 1996 Brit Awards during a performance by Michael Jackson.
Early life
Cocker was born in Sheffield, grew up in the Intake area of the city, and attended City School. His father, Mac Cocker, a DJ and actor, left the family and moved to Sydney when Cocker was seven, and had no contact with Cocker or his sister, Saskia, until Jarvis was in his thirties. Following their father's departure, both children were brought up by their mother, Christine Connolly, who later became a Conservative councillor.
Cocker founded the band Pulp originally under the name Arabacus Pulp (named after a tradable commodity he learned about in an economics class) at the age of 15 while he was a pupil at The City School, Sheffield. After numerous line-up changes, and shortening the name to Pulp, the band eventually found fame in the 1990s with the success of the albums His 'n' Hers (1994) and Different Class (1995). Cocker was Pulp's frontman, and part of his trademark image was his glasses, which seemed to stay magically on his face no matter what antics he performed. This feat was achieved using a huge rubber band round the back of his glasses.
Pulp released two more albums (This Is Hardcore and We Love Life) to critical acclaim, though neither achieved the commercial success of Different Class. After releasing a greatest hits album, the band went on hiatus from 2003 to 2010, then returned to activity in 2011.
Cocker is also renowned for his wit and observations of the cultural scene.

Liverpool has been stripped of its coveted world heritage status after Unesco blamed years of development for an irreversible loss to the historic value of its Victorian docks.
The UN's heritage body concluded at a meeting in China on Wednesday that the outstanding universal value of Liverpool's waterfront had been destroyed by new buildings, including Everton football club's new £500m stadium.
The decision is a humiliating blow for the city and gives Liverpool the ignominious distinction of being only the third place to lose the status in nearly 50 years. The other delisted sites were Oman's Arabian Oryx Sanctuary in 2007 and the Dresden Elbe valley in Germany in 2009.
Liverpool has enjoyed world heritage status since 2004 placing it alongside the Taj Mahal and Great Wall of China as recognition for its role as a major trading power during the British empire and the architectural beauty of its waterfront.
The threat of being delisted has hung over Liverpool since 2012 as Unesco warned that development had significantly changed the city's skyline and was destroying the heritage value of its waterfront.
The decision was announced by Tian Xuejun, the chair of the Unesco world heritage committee, at a virtual conference hosted in China on Wednesday.
The UN agency said development such as Liverpool Waters, a £5.5bn project by Peel Group to transform previously disused land, had led to a serious deterioration and irreversible loss to the area's outstanding universal value along with significant loss to its authenticity and integrity.
It said that as a result of these projects the waterfront had deteriorated to the extent that it has lost characteristics that led to its inclusion on the world heritage list in 2004.
The proposal to build Everton's new riverside football stadium at Bramley-Moore dock would add to the ascertained threat of

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R15NEA - Retsina (Greek: ρετσίνα) is a Greek white (or rosé) resinated wine, which has been made for at least 2,000 years. Its unique flavor is said to have originated from the practice of sealing wine vessels, particularly amphorae, with Aleppo pine resin in ancient times. Before the invention of impermeable glass bottles, oxygen caused many wines to spoil within the year. Pine resin helped keep air out, while infusing the wine with resin aroma. The Romans began to use barrels in the 3rd century AD, removing any oenological necessity for resin, but the flavor itself was so popular that the style is still widespread today.

However, she did not accept either the role or the title and it was not accepted or recognised by any other state. Fiji became a republic through a military coup in 1987, after which its Great Council of Chiefs continued to recognise Elizabeth II as queen, or Paramount Chief of Fiji, until the council's de-establishment on 14 March 2012. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHX7CA - Itsukushima (厳島) is an island in the western part of the Inland Sea of Japan, located in the northwest of Hiroshima Bay. It is popularly known as Miyajima (宮島), which in Japanese means Shrine Island. The island is one of Hayashi Gahō's Three Views of Japan specified in 1643. Itsukushima is part of the city of Hatsukaichi in Hiroshima Prefecture. The island was part of the former town of Miyajima before the 2005 merger with Hatsukaichi.
Itsukushima is famous for the Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to records, the shrine was established in the time of Empress Suiko. The warrior-courtier Taira no Kiyomori gave the shrine its present form. In 1555, Mōri Motonari defeated Sue Harukata at the Battle of Miyajima. Toyotomi Hideyoshi built a large building, the Senjō-kaku, on a hill above the shrine.
Itsukushima has a number of temples, including Toyokuni Shrine with a five-storied pagoda, and Daiganji Temple - one of the three most famous Benzaiten temples of Japan. The island is also famous for its upper hill side cherry blossoms and maple leaf autumn foliage.
The island of Itsukushima, including the waters around it (part of Seto Inland Sea), lies within Setonaikai National Park. This sea is affected by strong tides. At low tide, the bottom of the sea is exposed past the island's torii. At high tide, the sea covers all the previously exposed seabed mud and fills areas underneath the shrine boardwalk.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBJ9PH - Coney IslandStillwell Avenue (also known as Coney Island Terminal and signed on some trains as either Coney Island or Stillwell Avenue) is a New York City Subway terminal in Coney Island, Brooklyn, acting as the railroad-south terminus for the D, F, N, and Q trains. The large facility, originally built in 1919, was designed at a time when Coney Island was the primary summer resort area for the New York metropolitan area, with all of the rail lines in southern Brooklyn funneling service to the area. It is one of the largest elevated transportation terminals in the world.
The station has eight tracks and four island platforms, with trains entering from both compass north and south. It is located at the corner of Stillwell and Surf Avenues in Coney Island, the site of the former West End Terminal. Geographically, the station is the southernmost terminal in the New York City Subway system.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBJ9PP - Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and leisure/entertainment destination of Long Island on the Coney Island Channel, which is part of the Lower Bay in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City. Coney Island was formerly the westernmost of the Outer Barrier islands on Long Island's southern shore, but in the early 20th century it became connected to the rest of Long Island by land fill. The residential portion of the peninsula is a community of 60,000 people in its western part, with Sea Gate to its west, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach to its east, the Lower Bay to the south, and Gravesend to the north.
Coney Island was originally part of the colonial town of Gravesend. By the mid-19th century, it became a seaside resort, and by the late 19th century, amusement parks were also built at the location. The attractions reached a historical peak during the first half of the 20th century, declining in popularity after World War II and following years of neglect. The area was revitalized with the opening of the MCU Park in 2001 and several amusement rides in the 2010s.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM9ATB - A tower viewer is a telescope or binoculars permanently mounted on a stalk. The device magnifies objects seen through its lenses, allowing users to see farther and more clearly than they could with the naked eye or with less powerful viewing devices. Tower viewers are typically metallic and most swivel horizontally and vertically (within given axes of rotation) to permit a range of view. The viewing machines are commonly placed in tourist destinations and scenic lookouts for the purpose of viewing attractions and events of interest
they are also used in residential, business, recreational and government locations for the purposes of surveillance and safety monitoring.
Two well-known manufacturers of tower viewers in the United States are Tower Optical Co., Inc. (founded in 1933) and SeeCoast Manufacturing Company, Inc. (founded in 1960). Both firms offer wheelchair-accessible viewer bases that provide easy access to the sighting mechanisms in compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Tower viewer manufacturers located abroad include Hi-Spy Viewing Machines, Inc. (established in 1991) in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTAEP - Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, (27 January 1832 14 January 1898), better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English writer of world-famous children's fiction, notably Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass. He was noted for his facility at word play, logic and fantasy. The poems Jabberwocky and The Hunting of the Snark are classified in the genre of literary nonsense. He was also a mathematician, photographer and Anglican deacon.
Carroll came from a family of High Church Anglicans, and developed a long relationship with Christ Church, Oxford, where he lived for most of his life as a scholar and teacher. It was the Dean of Christ Church, Henry Liddell, whose daughter Alice is widely identified as the original for Alice in Wonderland, though Carroll always denied this.
Several aspects of Carroll's life appear to confirm suspicions that he was a pedophile, though scholars have also made a credible case in his defence. In the absence of hard evidence, the issue of Carroll's hidden private life has provoked a lively debate, especially in recent times.
Dodgson was born in the small parsonage at Daresbury in Cheshire near the towns of Warrington and Runcorn, the eldest boy but already the third child of the four-and-a-half-year-old marriage. Eight more children followed. When Charles was 11, his father was given the living of Croft-on-Tees in North Yorkshire, and the whole family moved to the spacious rectory. This remained their home for the next 25 years.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MXFF39 - Harris Tweed is a tweed cloth that is handwoven by islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, finished in the Outer Hebrides, and made from pure virgin wool dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides. This definition, quality standards and protection of the Harris Tweed name are enshrined in the Harris Tweed Act 1993. For centuries, the islanders of Lewis and Harris, the Uists, Benbecula and Barra have woven cloth by hand, calling it 'clò-mòr' in the original Gaelic or 'big cloth'.
Originally, this handmade fabric was woven by crofters for familial use, ideal for protection against the colder climate of the North of Scotland. Surplus cloth was often traded or used as barter, eventually becoming a form of currency amongst the islanders. For example, it was not unusual for rents to be paid in blankets or lengths of cloth. By the end of the 18th century, the spinning of wool yarn from local raw materials was a staple industry for crofters. Finished handmade cloth was exported to the Scottish mainland and traded along with other commodities produced by the Islanders, such as dry hides, goat and deer skins.
The original name of the cloth was tweel, Scots for twill, it being woven in a twilled rather than a plain pattern. A traditional story has the name coming about almost by chance. Around 1830, a London merchant received a letter from a Hawick firm about some tweels. The London merchant misinterpreted the handwriting, understanding it to be a trade-name taken from the river Tweed that flows through the Scottish Borders. Subsequently, the goods were advertised as Tweed, and the name has remained ever since

The town's population is around 8,000, making it the largest town in the Hebrides, with a third of the population of the civil parish of Stornoway, which includes various nearby villages and has a population of approximately 12,000.
Stornoway is an important port and the major town and administrative centre of the Outer Hebrides. It is home to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (the Western Isles Council) and a variety of educational, sporting and media establishments. Observance of the Christian Sabbath (Sunday) has long been an aspect of the island's culture. Recent changes mean that Sunday on Lewis is now less different from Sunday on the other Western Isles or the mainland of Scotland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDPM0J - Murals in Northern Ireland have become symbols of Northern Ireland, depicting the region's past and present political and religious divisions.
Belfast and Derry contain arguably the most famous political murals in Europe. It is believed that almost 2,000 murals have been documented since the 1970s. In 2014, the book, The Belfast Mural Guide estimated that, in Belfast, there were approximately 300 quality murals on display, with many more in varying degrees of age and decay. Murals commemorate, communicate and display aspects of culture and history. The themes of murals often reflect what is important to a particular community. A mural therefore exists to express an idea or message and could generally be seen as reflecting values held dear to that community.
In Irish republican areas the themes of murals can range from the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with particular emphasis on strike leader Bobby Sands
murals of international solidarity with revolutionary groups are equally common, as are those which highlight a particular issue, for example the Ballymurphy Massacre or the McGurk's Bar bombing. In working class unionist communities, murals are used to promote Ulster loyalist paramilitary groups such as the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Volunteer Force and commemorate their deceased members. However traditional themes such as William III of England and the Battle of the Boyne, the Battle of the Somme and the 36th Ulster Division are equally common

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HE18C8 - Samson and Goliath are the twin shipbuilding gantry cranes situated at Queen's Island, Belfast, Northern Ireland. The cranes, which were named after the Biblical figures Samson and Goliath, dominate the Belfast skyline and are landmark structures of the city. Comparative newcomers to the city, the cranes rapidly came to symbolise Belfast in a way that no building or monument had hitherto done.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy GXXPPJ - Preston railway station in Preston, Lancashire, England, is a major station on the West Coast Main Line, roughly half-way between London Euston and Glasgow Central (206 miles from London Euston, 194 miles from Glasgow Central). It is served by Northern, Virgin Trains, and TransPennine Express services, plus Caledonian Sleeper overnight services between London and Scotland.
The North Union Railway opened a station on the site in 1838. It was extended in 1850, with new platforms under the separate management of the East Lancashire Railway, and by 1863 LondonScotland trains stopped here to allow passengers to eat in the station dining room. The current station was built 1880 and extended in 1903 and 1913, when it had fifteen platforms. A free buffet for servicemen was provided during both World Wars. The East Lancashire platforms were demolished in the 1970s as connecting lines closed. Only six platforms remain in regular use today.
As well as intercity trains to London Euston, Birmingham New Street, Manchester Piccadilly, Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley, the station is served by local trains to other parts of Lancashire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Yorkshire.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DN6NHM - Spike Island is an island in the estuary of the River Mersey, in North West England, flanked by the Sankey Canal. It is a reclaimed toxic waste site, considered a birthplace of the British chemical industry, and forms a part of Widnes in the Halton borough of Cheshire.
Its maze of abandoned chemical factories, rail lines, canal and industrial dockage, and industrial pollution, which had declined into a rust belt toxic wilderness, was reclaimed as woodland, wetlands and green space between 1975 and 1982. A surviving warehouse is now the home of the Catalyst Museum, the only science museum in the UK solely devoted to chemistry.
Spike Island was the site of a famous outdoor concert by The Stone Roses in May 1990. A film about the concert was released in 2013, and is called Spike Island.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D91X66 - Harbour / Harbor panorama at Los Cristianos town, Southern Tenerife, Canary Islands Spain
Historical references to Los Cristianos date back to the 16th century, when it is described as a harbour by the Notary Hernán Guerra.[2] Los Cristianos remained an important port for the south of Tenerife throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries but remained unsettled until the latter part of the 19th Century due to the threat of pirate raids as there was no significant population to warrant a castle or fort.
The first permanent settlement of Los Cristianos was in the 1860s when it was described by Pedro de Olive as a hamlet in Arona, with three one-storey houses, a two-storey house and a hut. It was officially recognised in governmental documents as been established in 1888 by 29 houses and a cave.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F0G7EN - Berlin Cathedral (German: Berliner Dom) is the short name for the Evangelical (i.e. Protestant) Supreme Parish and Collegiate Church (German: Oberpfarr- und Domkirche) in Berlin, Germany. It is located on Museum Island in the Mitte borough. The current building was finished in 1905 and is a main work of Historicist architecture of the Kaiserzeit.
The Dom is the parish church of the congregation Gemeinde der Oberpfarr- und Domkirche zu Berlin, a member of the umbrella organisation Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia. The Berlin Cathedral has never been a cathedral in the actual sense of that term since it has never been the seat of a bishop. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F0XDWP - Berlin Cathedral (German: Berliner Dom) is the short name for the Evangelical (i.e.
The bishop of the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg (under this name 19452003) is based at St. Mary's Church and Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin. St. Hedwig's Cathedral serves as the seat of Berlin's Roman Catholic metropolitan bishop.

Cast are an English rock band from Liverpool, formed in 1992 by John Power (vocals, guitar) and Peter Wilkinson (backing vocals, bass) after Power left The La's and Wilkinson's former band Shack had split. Following early line-ups with different guitarists and drummers, Liam &
quot
Skin&
quot
Tyson (guitar) and Keith O'Neill (drums) joined Cast in 1993.
Emerging from the Britpop movement of the mid-1990s, Cast signed to Polydor Records and their debut album All Change (1995) became the highest selling album for the label. Further commercial success continued with the albums Mother Nature Calls (1997) and Magic Hour (1999), however the band's fourth album Beetroot (2001) was far less successful which led to the band's split soon after. Cast reunited for a UK tour in November 2010.
Noel Gallagher of Oasis described watching the band live as being like a &
quot
religious experience&
quot
and they were labelled &
quot
The Who of the 90's&
quot
. It has been suggested that the name &
quot
Cast&
quot
was taken from the final word on The La's eponymous album (the song &
quot
Looking Glass&
quot
ends with the repeated line &
quot
The change is cast&
quot
), though John Power stated when interviewed that this was a coincidence.
Despite never having a number one single or album, nor winning any major awards (although they were once nominated for &
quot
Best British Newcomer&
quot
at the 1996 BRIT Awards), Cast still proved to be very popular at their peak of success, with All Change being a multi-platinum seller of 600,000 units.
Elgol (Scottish Gaelic: Ealaghol) is a village on the shores of Loch Scavaig towards the end of the Strathaird peninsula in the Isle of Skye, in the Scottish Highlands. According to tradition, its name derives from a battle fought with five ships by Aella, a follower of Vortigern, against the Picts and Scots (“Aella-gol”).
The Strathaird peninsula was historically a heartland of the Mackinnons, a robustly Jacobite clan. On 4 July 1746, the Young Pretender found sanctuary at Elgol in the course of his wanderings under the protection of Mackinnon of Mackinnon and Captain John Mackinnon of Elgol. The cave where he is said to have waited for a boat to the mainland (“Prince Charlie’s cave”, or “Uamh Phrionnsa”) can still be visited today, a short walk to the south of the village.

Aignish (Scottish Gaelic: Aiginis) is located northwest of Knock and east of Stornoway on the east coast of the Isle of Lewis (Scottish Gaelic: Leòdhas), Scotland. The township is at the island side of the isthmus connecting to the Eye peninsula.
Lewis is of Presbyterian tradition with a rich history, having once been part of the Norse Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. Today, life is very different from elsewhere in Scotland with Sabbath observance, the Gaelic language and peat cutting retaining more importance than elsewhere. Lewis has a rich cultural heritage as can be seen from its myths and legends as well as the local literary and musical traditions.
St Columba's Church, Aignish, Isle of Lewis. The crofting village contains the historic Eye Church (Scottish Gaelic: Eaglais na h-Aoidhe), a large pre-Reformation Church. The present church buildings are believed to be medieval, built during two separate construction phases. They were constructed on the site believed to be the cell of St. Catan, a contemporary of St. Columba. The church was the burial ground of the MacLeods of Lewis.
Saint Columba (7 December 521 – 9 June 597 AD)—also known as Colum Cille (Old Irish, meaning 'dove of the church'), Colm Cille (Irish), Calum Cille (Scottish Gaelic) and Kolban or Kolbjørn (Old Norse, meaning 'black bear')—was a Gaelic Irish missionary monk who propagated Christianity among the Picts during the Early Medieval Period. He was one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland.
In 563 he travelled to Scotland with twelve companions, where according to legend he first landed on the Kintyre Peninsula, near Southend. However, being still in sight of his native land he moved further north up the west coast of Scotland. In 563 he was granted land on the island of Iona off the west coast of Scotland which became the centre of his evangelising mission to the Picts.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HFE8 - Lews Castle (Scottish Gaelic: Caisteal Leòdhais) is a Victorian era castle located west of the town of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland. The name Stornoway (Scottish Gaelic-'Steornabhagh') derives from 'Sjornavagr', the Old Norse for 'steering bay'. Stornoway has been settled since at least Viking times although there is archaeological evidence of Neolithic activity in the near vicinity of the town.
The Wicker Woman of Lews Castle looks extra spooky at dusk. She has now blown down and been recently damaged after many months of gliding through the grounds.
It is a clever nod to the cult classic film 'The Wicker Man' (or the Wickerman) which was set on a fictional Summerisle, a remote Hebridean island famed for its popular and unusually abundant fruit produce. The film stars Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt, and Britt Ekland. Paul Giovanni composed the soundtrack.
The story centres on the visit of Police Sergeant Howie to the isolated island of Summerisle, in search of a missing girl the locals claim never existed. Howie, a devout Christian, is appalled to find that the inhabitants of the island practise a form of Celtic paganism.
The film was shot almost entirely in the small Scottish towns of Gatehouse of Fleet, Newton Stewart, Kirkcudbright and a few scenes in the village of Creetown in Dumfries and Galloway, as well as Plockton in Ross-shire.
The Wicker Man had moderate success and won first prize in the 1974 Festival of Fantastic Films in Paris, but largely slipped into obscurity. In 1977 the American film magazine Cinefantastique devoted a commemorative issue to the film, asserting that the film is the Citizen Kane of horror movies an oft-quoted phrase attributed to this issue
A remake, starring Nicolas Cage and Ellen Burstyn and directed by Neil LaBute was released on September 1, 2006. It was a failure at the box office and today it has a significant cult following as an unintentional comedy.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HEW1RH - Stornoway - The herring girls
The Herring Girls played an important part in The history of Stornoway.
The Fishing Industry afforded many families a wage and indeed a living.
The work of women in the heyday of the Herring fishery has been well documented, with plays being written and performed , poetry being written about these brave hardworking girls. Here is a brief summary of the herring girls.
In Stornoway the work of women in the heyday of the Herring fishery is commemorated by two statues, one on North Beach Quay and the other on South Beach Quay.
The picture above shows a herring girl working gutting a herring. The girl has a barrel similar to those that were used in the herring industry throughout the 19th and 20th century.
The Herring Industry in 1914
In 1914 a combined 20% of the Isle of Lewis' population (3,000 women and another 1,600 men) were involved in the herring industry. In the early 20th century the fishing ports of Scotland were packed with women who worked the summer gutting herring, before heading down the east coast of England following the fishing.
For the women of that time there wasn't much work available and even though being a herring girl was jolly hard work - with long long hours and very low wages many of the girls loved the company of the other girls and looked forward to the start of the herring season. Although many of the girls working in the Stornoway herring industry - came from The Islands - they also worked alongside girls who came from all over Scotland - these girls travelled from port to port - wherever the work was on offer.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HFDX - Sunset at the Ruins of St Columbas Church, Aignish, outside Stornoway Isle Of Lewis, Scotland
Saint Columba (7 December 521 9 June 597 AD)also known as Colum Cille (Old Irish, meaning dove of the church), Colm Cille (Irish), Calum Cille (Scottish Gaelic) and Kolban or Kolbjørn (Old Norse, meaning black bear)was a Gaelic Irish missionary monk who propagated Christianity among the Picts during the Early Medieval Period. He was one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF13B6 - Anglesey is an island and, as Isle of Anglesey, a county off the north west coast of Wales. Two bridges, spanning the Menai Strait, connect it to the mainland: the original Menai Suspension Bridge (shown here carrying the A5 in winter), designed by Thomas Telford in 1826
and the more recently rebuilt Britannia Bridge (replacing the original designed by Robert Stephenson), which carries the A55 and the North Wales Coast Railway Line.
Snowden mountains are seen here in the background covered in snow.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD9T - The Menai Suspension Bridge (Welsh: Pont Grog y Borth) is a suspension bridge between the island of Anglesey and the mainland of Wales. Designed by Thomas Telford and completed in 1826, it was the first modern suspension bridge in the world.
Here shown at sunset in winter, with the mountains behind covered in snowfall.
Before the bridge was completed in 1826, the island had no fixed connection to the mainland and all movements to and from Anglesey were by ferry (or, with difficulty, on foot at low tide). The main source of income on Anglesey was from the sale of cattle, and to move them to the markets of the inland counties or London, they had to be driven into the water and swum across the Menai Straits.
The Act of Union 1800 increased the need for transport to Ireland, and with Holyhead as one of the principal terminals to Dublin it was decided to build a bridge.
Thomas Telford was assigned the task of improving the route from London to Holyhead, and one of the key improvements was his design of the suspension bridge over the Menai Strait between a point near Bangor on the mainland and the village of Porthaethwy (which is now also known as Menai Bridge) on Anglesey. The design of the bridge had to allow for Royal Navy sailing ships 100 feet (30 m) tall to pass under the deck at high tide, and no scaffolding was allowed during construction as that would have violated the rule.
Construction of the bridge began in 1819 with the towers on either side of the strait. These were constructed from Penmon limestone and were hollow with internal cross-walls. Then came the sixteen huge chain cables, each made of 935 iron bars that support the 176-metre (577 ft) span. To avoid rusting between manufacture and use, the iron was soaked in linseed oil and later painted. The suspending power of the chains was calculated at 2,016 tons and the total weight of each chain was 121 tons. The bridge was opened to much fanfare on 30 January 1826.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59X9K - Lerwick (Old Norse: Leirvik
Norn: Larvik) is the main town and port of the Shetland archipelago, Scotland. Shetland's only burgh, Lerwick had a population of about 7,000 residents in 2010
Centred 123 miles (200 km) off the north coast of the Scottish mainland and on the east coast of the Shetland Mainland, Lerwick lies 211 miles (340 km) north-by-northeast of Aberdeen
222 miles (357 km) west of the similarly sheltered port of Bergen in Norway
and 228 miles (367 km) south east of Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands. One of the UK's coastal weather stations is situated there, with the local climate having small seasonal variation due to the maritime influence. Being located further north than Saint Petersburg and the three mainland Nordic capitals, Lerwick's nights in the middle of summer only get dark twilight and winters have below six hours of complete daylight.
Lerwick is a name with roots in Old Norse and its local descendant, Norn, which was spoken in Shetland until the mid-19th century. The name Lerwick means bay of clay. The corresponding Norwegian name is Leirvik, leir meaning clay and vik meaning bay or inlet. Towns with similar names exist in southwestern Norway (Leirvik, Lervik) and on the Faroe Islands (Leirvík)
Evidence of human settlement in the Lerwick area dates back to the Neolithic (40002500 BC) and the Bronze Age (2500800 BC) known from paleoenvironmental records for human activity and the recovery of artefacts, including a stone axe head submerged in Bressay Sound. Iron Age (800 BC AD 800) settlement is known at the Broch of Clickimin, which was constructed as early as 400 BC. The first settlement to be known as Lerwick was founded in the 17th century as a herring and white fish seaport to trade with the Dutch fishing fleet. This settlement was on the mainland (west) side of Bressay Sound, a natural harbour with south and north entrances between the Shetland mainland and the island of Bressay.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4810459600 - 'Norrie Dan Mackay is pictured here at 'The Bus Stop', Barvas, Isle of Lewis. His official job title is River Watcher, he's from Carloway and travels to the bus each evening and heads back home on the 7am public bus the following morning.
He is a crofter as well with many sheep so that fills up a lot of his time, he's been a River Watcher for a long as I can remember and he's pretty good crack my friend Donna has to say. He keeps an eye on the poachers, particularly here as its where fish come inshore to spawn. A particularly beautiful spot on Lewis. Having been taken here by Donna I am quite jealous of the sunsets and other features that come as standard on this piece of Hedrides coast looking straight out on to the fierce Atlantic. Norrie Dan has also got a boat and spends time sea fishing in the summer months.
In the surfing magazine the spot where the surfers go is called the Bus Stop, but the official name of the where this bus (with a bedroom in the back) is parked is called Croig. The bus has also been featured in a book called Fishing Huts by Jo Orchard-Lisle, Check it out here - www.fishing-huts.com/fishing-huts-inside.html
I have been coming here for over 10 years and the islands and people never cease to amaze me. They always are welcoming and everyone should have the chance to experience the hospitality of the islands and of course the best black pudding in Britain from Charles MacLeod's shop in Stornoway.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2A9GHW0 - Tobermory distillery is a Scotch whisky distillery situated on the Hebridean island of Mull, Scotland in the town of Tobermory. The distillery, which was formerly known as Ledaig, was founded in 1798 and has changed hands several times, having undergone a number of periods of closure. The only distillery on Mull, it is currently owned by Burn Stewart Distillers, a subsidiary of Distell Group Limited of South Africa. Its main product, Tobermory single malt, is used in the blends Scottish Leader and Black Bottle. The distillery also produces a smaller amount of peated whisky, which remains known under the former name, Ledaig.
The Tobermory Single Malt is distilled from unpeated malted barley and matured in oak casks for at least ten years. A heavily peated whisky is also produced, but in small quantities, named Ledaig after the original distillery name. The malts are used in a number of blends including Scottish Leader and Black Bottle. The water for the distillery comes from a private loch near to the Mishnish lochs. The branding had been confused under previous owners, with the Tobermory brand being used for both a single malt and a blended whisky.
Production was upgraded in 1990, with the distillery becoming capable of producing a million litres of spirit a year. It uses a traditional copperdomed cast iron mash tun, four washbacks made of Oregon pine, and four spirit stills. The whisky is matured in both former bourbon whiskey and sherry casks. Maturation takes place at the distillery at Deanston.

Ledaig is the original name for the Tobermory Scotch whisky distillery on the isle of Mull, western Scotland. The distillery was founded in 1798 and the present buildings were erected during its first period of operation which continued until 1826. The distillery was 'silent' for long periods in the mid 1800s and mid 1900s and was twice revived during the 1970s. Now it has been revived again
The distillery belongs currently to Burn Stewart, closed in 1975, and reopened in 1990. Its main product, Tobermory single malt is used in the blends 'Scottish Leader' and 'Black Prince'. The distillery also produces a smaller amount of peated whisky, Ledaig (not quite as peaty as Lafroig). It is just to the left of the colourful harbour.
Single Malts mature at the Deanston Distillery in sherry and bourbon casks, they are then returned to Tobermory for the last few years. Burn Stewart also own this facility. Tobermory the Malt Scotch Whisky is presented in a bottle with an enamelled label. It is a vatted malt containing some Tobermory whiskies of up to 20-years old and proportions of newly-mature spirit from elsewhere.
Vatted malt is blended from malt whiskies from different distilleries. If a whisky is labelled 'pure malt' or just 'malt' it is almost certain to be a vatted whisky. This is also sometimes labelled as 'blended malt' whisky.

This is a track I seldome play, but when I do it generally goes on repeat for 3 or more hours. Its a pleasure to pair it up to one of my favourite locations, the isle of Iona, a mere rock at the foot of Mull, western Scotland.
'Peace of Iona' is a song written by Mike Scott that appears on the studio album Universal Hall and on the live recording Karma to Burn by The Waterboys. The band dates back to 1983. They play a mix of Celtic folk music with rock and roll.
The early Waterboys sound was dubbed 'The Big Music' after a song on their second album, A Pagan Place. This musical style was described by Scott as 'a metaphor for seeing God's signature in the world.' It either influenced or was used to describe a number of other bands, including Simple Minds, The Alarm, In Tua Nua, Big Country, the Hothouse Flowers and World Party, the last of which was made up of former Waterboys members.
The Waterboys have also influenced musicians such as Colin Meloy of The Decemberists Grant Nicholas of Feeder and Miles Hunt of The Wonder Stuff. Bono and The Edge from U2 are fans of the band.
The Waterboys are best known for 'The Whole of the Moon' which typifies the sound of The Big Music period. Theres much more to them than this and the 2005 live album 'Karma To Burn' is a good place to start. Tell 'em I sent you :-)
------------------------
Iona (Scottish Gaelic: Ì Chaluim Chille) is a small island in the Inner Hebrides off the western coast of Scotland. It was a centre of Irish monasticism for four centuries and is today renowned for its tranquility and natural beauty. It is a popular tourist destination. Its modern Gaelic name means 'Iona of (Saint) Columba' (formerly anglicised 'Icolmkill').
It is one mile from Mull and has a population of just over 100. From the moment you leave the ferry, you can feel the history.
Iona was the site of a highly important monastery (see Iona Abbey) during the Early Middle Ages. According to tradition the monastery was founded in 563 by the monk Columba, also known as Colm Cille, who had been exiled from his native Ireland as a result of his involvement in the Battle of Cul Dreimhne. Columba and twelve companions went into exile on Iona, then part of the Irish kingdom of Dál Riata, and founded a monastery there.
The monastery was hugely successful, and played a crucial role in the conversion to Christianity of the Picts of present-day Scotland in the late 6th century and of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria in 635. A large number of satellite institutions were founded, and Iona became the centre of one of the most important monastic systems in Great Britain and Ireland.
Iona Abbey, now an ecumenical church, is of particular historical and religious interest to pilgrims and visitors alike. It is the most elaborate and best-preserved ecclesiastical building surviving from the Middle Ages in the Western Isles of Scotland. Though modest in scale in comparison to medieval abbeys elsewhere in Western Europe, it has a wealth of fine architectural detail, and monuments of many periods.
In front of the Abbey stands the 9th century St Martin's Cross, one of the best-preserved Celtic crosses in the British Isles, and a replica of the 8th century St John's Cross (original fragments in the Abbey museum).

The Isle of Mull or simply Mull (Scottish Gaelic Muile) is the second largest island of the Inner Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland in the council area of Argyll and Bute.
With an area of 875.35 square kilometres (337.97 sq mi) Mull is the fourth largest Scottish island and the fourth largest island surrounding Great Britain. In the 2001 census the usual resident population of Mull was 2,667
in the summer this is supplemented by many tourists. Much of the population lives in Tobermory, the only burgh on the island until 1973, and its capital.
Tobermory is also home to Mull's only single malt Scotch whisky distillery, Tobermory (formerly Ledaig)

A highland cattle herd book registry was started in 1885 and this lists pedigrees etc. This was a very wet rainy day all over central and north Scotland with many lochs north and west of Calendar in the Trossochs very high, often lapping up to the roadside. This cow had been soaked by it all day by the looks of it and had been scratching itself on some barbed wire next to his field.
Highland breeds do thrive on poor mountain land with high annual rainfall and bitter winds however. Gaelic names are encouraged for the naming of cows. Some female names include A Bhuidhe Aillidh (a Yellow Beauty), Fraoch (Heather) and Sonasag (Little Happy Female). Male names include Aonghas (Angus), Companach (Companion), Cuairtear (Tourist) and Gruaghach (long haired one).

These important architectural landmarks are:
The Royal Liver Building, built between 1908 and 1911 and designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas. It is a grade I listed building consisting of two clock towers, both crowned by mythical Liver Birds. The building is the headquarters of the Royal Liver Friendly Society. Now Deutsche Bank.
The Cunard Building, constructed between 1914 and 1916 and a grade II* listed building. It is the former headquarters of the Cunard Line shipping company.
The Port of Liverpool Building, built from 1903 to 1907 and also grade II* listed. It is the former home of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board.
Added to this left and right is the new Beatles exhiition and the museum of Liverpool life.
Work commenced in 2007 to build a canal link between the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and the South Docks. The £22 million pound 1.6 mile extension to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal was officially opened on 25 March 2009. It opens to boaters at the end of April and links the 127 miles of the existing canal to the city’s South Docks, passing Pier Head and the famous Three Graces. The Pier Head was in this form for the 2008 city of culture celebrations.
At first, the Prince's Landing Stage was situated at the Pier Head to serve the trans-Atlantic liner service. There were many stages built during Liverpool's history, the most recent opened in the 1890s and was joined to the neighbouring George's Landing Stage, situated to the south. After further lengthening took place in the early twentieth century, the combined structure originally measured nearly 3,000 feet, almost half a mile. Both were scrapped in 1973, following the termination of trans-Atlantic services from Liverpool.
In the three years or so I worked in Liverpool, Pier Head served as a major bus interchange. There was also a very poor Beefeater / Berni Inn pub at the Pier head too, where the Beatles exhibition is today.

The image I took from my ipod (like the MP3 sound I was getting) was no match for the real thing, a genuine 12' 45rpm single of the B5.
I saw them live in 1980 and they were more memorable than the headline band they supported.
Of course they were produced by the great but mis-guided Martin Hannet, who no doubt helped them achieve their unique Reggae-Punk sound.
I would recommend any music fan to checkout 'Who Killed Martin Hannett?: The Story of Factory Records' Musical Magician' or the excellent CD 'Zero: A Martin Hannett Story 1979-1991'
However do avoid 'In the Studio With Martin Hannett' - you will be dissapointed, sorely.
He was a big user of narcotics and drink, and this was to eventually hasten his death at the age of 41. Just before he died he had ballooned to 26 stone (364 pounds) and his coffin could not fit in the ground.
He was the total musical pioneer, always searching to create his own unique sound.
Of many 'Martin Hannett' Stories, one favourite is about when he once fell asleep over the mixing desk, his gigantic belly spreading and pushing the faders across the board, so that the sound went berserk -- the band stopped playing, and woke him up telling him that the levels were all over the place. 'Bollocks,' he replied, 'that's the best you've sounded all f---ing day.'
Interesting too that producer on this cut is Chris Nagle, also later involved with Clayton lads Gabrielle’s Wish and Jane Weaver's Kill Laura - www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3809868192/

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF0N73 - A wide panoramic view of Stornoway Harbour on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, showing a vivid rainbow arcing through heavy Atlantic cloud as sunlight breaks across the town and waterfront. The calm surface of the harbour reflects moored fishing boats, harbour structures and colourful shoreline buildings, creating a layered composition that contrasts tranquillity with the unsettled weather above. Dark storm clouds dominate the sky, while the rainbow introduces a moment of brightness and visual optimism typical of rapidly changing conditions in the Western Isles.
Stornoway is the largest town in the Outer Hebrides and functions as the main port, commercial centre and transport hub for Lewis and Harris. The harbour plays a central role in the local economy, supporting fishing, ferry services and maritime trade, and remains a focal point of daily island life. The presence of working boats alongside residential and commercial buildings highlights the close relationship between community and sea that defines the Hebridean experience.
Rainbows are a frequent but fleeting feature of the Hebridean climate, produced by fast-moving weather systems rolling in from the Atlantic Ocean. This image captures that distinctive combination of dramatic skies, calm water and sudden light that characterises coastal Scotland. The scene evokes themes of resilience, isolation, natural beauty and continuity in remote island communities.
This image is well suited for editorial use covering Scottish islands, coastal weather, maritime life, climate and environment, travel and tourism in the Outer Hebrides, as well as commercial applications requiring atmospheric coastal imagery with strong natural symbolism.

Broadford (An t-Àth Leathann in Scottish Gaelic), together with nearby Harrapool, is the second-largest settlement on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, lying on the SW corner of Broadford Bay, on the A87 between Portree and the Skye Bridge. Overlooked by the eastern Cuillins, Broadford is in a beautiful tranquil area.
West of Broadford, on the lower slopes of Beinn na Caillich, is Goir a' Bhlair, 'the field of battle'. The battle concerned was apparently a decisive action by the Gaelic Clan Mackinnon against the Vikings.
Broadford was a cattle market until 1812, when Telford built the road from Portree to Kyleakin. Its said that veterans of the Napoleonic Wars settled during the first half of the 19th century. Writing in the middle of the 19th century, Alexander Smith said, 'If Portree is the London of Skye, Broadford is its Manchester.
There is a song by the rock band Jethro Tull called 'Broadford Bazaar' (on the remastered version of the Heavy Horses album) which is named after this town.

The Music burned like a short supernova. They were an English alternative rock band, formed Kippax, Leeds, in 1999. Comprising Robert Harvey (vox, guitar), Adam Nutter (lead guitar), Stuart Coleman (bass) and Phil Jordan (drums), the band came to prominence with the release of their debut album, The Music, in 2002.
The band released two further studio albums, Welcome to the North (2004) and Strength in Numbers (2008), before parting ways in 2011.
In January 2010, the band began demoing material for their fourth studio album. The album was due for release sometime 2011.
Harvey has since gone on to work with The Streets, collaborating on the album Computers and Blues. Mike Skinner of The Streets and Harvey also released a Christmas song in December 2010, called Scrooge And Marley – I Don't Want It To Be Me.
On March 31, 2011, The Music announced a series of farewell gigs on their website. The band will play three shows in Japan July 25–27. They are then scheduled for a show at Brixton Academy London, England on August 4, before bringing the curtain down on their career with two home town gigs at the O2 Academy in Leeds on 5 and 6 August.
On April 21, 2011 the band released the newest and final song of their career on their official website. 'Ghost Hands' was recorded for their now scrapped fourth studio album sessions

The nearby crofting and fishing village lies on the eastern shore of Loch Slapin, 5 miles (7 km) southwest of Broadford (An t-Àth Leathann), on the road to Elgol (Ealaghol). There is a mixture of Victorian white-washed cottages and modern flat-pack houses. The village boasts good views of Blaven and Loch Slapin.
Torrin sits on Durness limestone. There is an abundance of trees and varied plant flora, including more than a dozen species of orchids. Much of the area is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation.
There are five working crofts in Torrin with cattle and sheep. The common grazing extends north onto the surrounding red granite hills Beinn Dearg Mhòr (709m) and Beinn Dearg Bheag (584m) and beyond the head of Loch Slapin

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 3828011848 - 'The historic site over 4000 years old on the west coast of the isle of Lewis, outer Hebrides. Easiest way to reach it is via Stornoway (main port and airport). The layout of the monument is in the shape of a distorted Celtic cross.
These Callanish Stones (or 'Callanish I'), Clachan Chalanais or Tursachan Chalanais in Gaelic, are situated near the village of Callanish (Gaelic: Calanais) on the west coast of the isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides (Western Isles), Scotland. Construction of the site probably took place around 2900 and 2600 BC, though there were possibly earlier buildings before 3000 BC. A tomb was later built into the site. Thirteen primary stones form a circle about 13 metres in diameter, with a long approach avenue of stones to the north, and shorter stone rows to the east, south, and west (possibly incomplete avenues). The overall layout of the monument recalls a distorted Celtic cross. The individual stones vary from around 1 m to 5 m in height, with an average of 4 metres, and are of the local course Lewisian gneiss.
The site is very haunting at sunset when the visitors have gone.

Construction of the site took place between 2900 and 2600 BC, though there were possibly earlier buildings before 3000 BC. A tomb was later built into the site. Debris from the destruction of the tomb suggests the site was out of use between 2000 BC and 1700 BC.[1] The 13 primary stones form a circle about 13 m in diameter, with a long approach avenue of stones to the north, and shorter stone rows to the east, south, and west.
