Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3ECEEH1 - The Manchester Store at Manchester Airport is shown selling city-branded souvenirs, travel essentials, soft toys, keyrings, magnets and V&A merchandise, with a prominent illuminated Manchester sign and bee logo above the retail display. The image is a useful editorial view of airport shopping, destination branding and the way Manchester presents itself to visitors, tourists and returning passengers. The worker bee has become one of Manchester's best-known civic symbols, linked to the city's industrial past, local identity, hard work, resilience and Mancunian pride. Its use on souvenirs, signs and merchandise has grown strongly in recent years, making the bee logo instantly recognisable as shorthand for the city. The airport setting adds commercial value for stories about travel retail, visitor spending, UK tourism, airport passenger experience, city-break souvenirs, local independent brands, regional identity and the wider Manchester visitor economy. Visible categories including soft toys, travel accessories, keyrings and magnets show the practical mix of last-minute shopping and souvenir buying common in departures areas. The photograph also works for features about how airports increasingly promote local culture rather than only selling generic duty-free products, using regional design, museum partnerships, football culture, music heritage, industrial history and civic symbols to create a stronger sense of place. Manchester Airport has highlighted its aim to showcase local and up-and-coming brands to global audiences, which fits the scene's mix of local pride and international passenger flow. The black, blue and yellow signage, packed retail racks and bee motif create a clear, modern stock image for articles on Manchester branding, northern identity, retail display, airport redevelopment, tourism marketing, travel convenience, gifts, consumer behaviour and the commercial role of place-based souvenirs. It is especially useful where a recognisable Manchester image

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E3P7N6 - Manchester International Festival 2025 posters are displayed beside a graffiti-covered fence near Shudehill tram stop in Manchester city centre, advertising contemporary art, theatre, performance and cultural events. The visible MIF25 posters promote Juliet Ellis's A Symphony of Flesh and Bones at Aviva Studios, Liberation, Germaine Kruip's A Possibility and An Inheritance, with the distinctive Manchester International Festival branding repeated across the outdoor advertising panels. Factory International says MIF25 ran from 3 to 20 July 2025, taking over Aviva Studios and spreading across the city with artists and audiences from around the world, under the festival theme Dream Differently. The image is commercially useful for stories about Manchester arts and culture, festival marketing, outdoor posters, public art, theatre promotion, contemporary performance, city-centre advertising and the role of major festivals in shaping urban identity. The Shudehill location adds strong Manchester context, linking the festival's cultural programme with public transport, the Northern Quarter, tram passengers, commuters, visitors and everyday city movement. The rough brick wall, metal poster frames, graffiti, chain-link fence and changing urban backdrop contrast with the polished MIF branding, creating a useful visual of how cultural messages appear in real streets rather than only inside galleries or theatres. It can illustrate creative industries, cultural regeneration, visitor economy, public realm, arts funding, event tourism, poster design, city branding and the continuing role of printed advertising in a digital age. As a documentary stock image, it records MIF25 at street level, where international art, local audiences, transport infrastructure and Manchester's gritty visual culture meet in one public-facing display.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWDK0N - A Scottish Soldier is a song written by Andy Stewart using the tune of The Green Hills of Tyrol, which was transcribed by John MacLeod during the Crimean War from La Tua Danza Sì Leggiera, a chorus part in the third act of Gioachino Rossini's 1829 opera Guglielmo Tell (William Tell). The song is about a dying Scottish soldier, wishing to return to the hills of his homeland rather than die in the Tyrol. The song was one of two US chart entries by Andy Stewart. A Scottish Soldier reached no. 1 in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It spent 36 weeks in the UK Singles Chart in 1961.
This song was the entrance theme of professional wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper
Andrew Stewart MBE (30 December 1933 11 October 1993) was a Scottish singer and entertainer. He presented the BBC TV variety show The White Heather Club throughout the 1960s, and his song Donald Where's Your Troosers? was a hit in both 1960 and 1989. Internationally, the song most closely associated with Stewart is A Scottish Soldier.
Stewart was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1933, the son of a teacher. When he was five years old, the family moved to Perth and then, six years later, to Arbroath.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RWMEP3 - The Raymond Revuebar (19582004) was a theatre and strip club at 11 Walker's Court (now the location of The Box Soho nightclub), in the centre of London's Soho district. For many years, it was the only venue in London that offered full-frontal, on-stage nudity of the sort commonly seen in other cities in Europe and North America. Its huge brightly lit sign declaring it to be the World Centre of Erotic Entertainment made the Revuebar a local landmark.
In 1980, the Boulevard Theatre section of the venue was hired by comic actor Peter Richardson to stage his alternative comedy revue, The Comic Strip. This attracted a younger punk audience to the venue. In 1989, the Boulevard became Eddie Izzard's stand-up venue.
In the 1990s, the Revuebar struggled, with its dated image and competition from newer venues such as Spearmint Rhino and Stringfellow's. The name and leasehold was bought by Gérard Simi in 1997. The Revuebar closed on 10 June 2004

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NK27W5 - Travelex is a foreign exchange company founded by Lloyd Dorfman and headquartered in Peterborough. Its main businesses are foreign currency exchange, issuing prepaid credit cards for use by travellers, supplying central banks with foreign currency and global remittance. Travelex operates more than 1,100 stores and 900 ATMs in over 20 countries.
History
Travelex was founded as Express Exchange by Dorfman and opened its first branch in central London in 1976. By 1978 the company had four central London stores.
The company experienced growth in the 1980s, opening its first international store in 1984 in Rotterdam, and its first store at Heathrow Terminal 4 in 1986. Express Exchange subsequently became Travellers Exchange Corporation or Travelex when abbreviated
On 31 December 2019, Travelex took its UK and international websites and mobile apps offline following a reported cyber incident an action that also affected a number of large corporate third parties to whom Travelex provided a white-labelled travel money service including the online travel money services of supermarket chains such as ASDA, Tesco and Sainsbury's.
On 7 January 2020, it was claimed that the company was being held to ransom by hackers. The cyber criminals reportedly demanded £4.6 million ($6 million) in ransom from Travelex after infecting its network with Sodinokibi ransomware, having claimed to have copied more than 5GB of customer personal data

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NK2804 - Pret A Manger /ˈprɛt ə ˈmɒ̃ʒeɪ/ (prêt à manger is French for ready to eat) is an international sandwich shop franchise chain based in the United Kingdom, popularly referred to as Pret, founded in 1983. As of December 2022, Pret had 434 shops in the UK, including 273 in London, plus three Veggie Prets, which focus exclusively on vegetarian and vegan options. It also has shops in France, the US, Hong Kong and several other countries. Around 90% of all Pret shops worldwide donate their unsold fresh food to local charities, giving more than 16,000 sandwiches, wraps, salads and baguettes every day to homeless shelters and charities.
Two university friends, Sinclair Beecham and Julian Metcalfe, purchased the original Pret after bancrupcy.
In 1995, Metcalfe and Beecham set up The Pret Foundation, to help alleviate poverty in the UK. The Pret Foundation received donations from collection boxes in shops, funding a fleet of electric vans that deliver unsold food to homeless shelters at the end of each day, including FareShare, The Felix Project and City Harvest. The Pret Foundation has awarded over £7 million to over 100 charities across the UK, tackling homelessness, hunger and poverty.
The first shop outside London was opened on Broad Street, New York, in 2000, and by 2016, there were 74 Pret shops across the United States. In 2001, McDonald's bought a 33% non-controlling stake in the company, which they sold in 2008 to the private equity firm Bridgepoint Capital.
Pret a Manger Staff Union
In response to labour issues within the company, the Pret a Manger Staff Union was established in 2012 as an independent union with its principal demand being made around calls for a Living Wage. Andrej Stopa, the founder of the union, was later sacked from his Pret branch.
Failure to list ingredients on packaging
In late 2015, a 17-year-old girl collapsed and needed emergency medical care after a life-threatening reaction to sesame, which was present in a Pret product

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NK28BJ - Emirates (Arabic: طَيَران الإمارات DMG: Ṭayarān Al-Imārāt) is one of two flag carriers of the United Arab Emirates (the other being Etihad). Based in Garhoud, Dubai, the airline is a subsidiary of The Emirates Group, which is owned by the government of Dubai's Investment Corporation of Dubai. As of 2019, it was also the largest airline in the Middle East, operating over 3,600 flights per week from its hub at Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport. It operates to more than 150 cities in 80 countries across all continents (except Antarctica) through its fleet of nearly 300 aircraft. Cargo activities are undertaken by Emirates SkyCargo.
Emirates is the world's fourth-largest airline by scheduled revenue passenger-kilometers flown, and the second-largest in terms of freight tonne-kilometers flown.
During the mid-1980s, Gulf Air began to cut back its services to Dubai. As a result, Emirates was conceived on 15 March 1985, with backing from Dubai's royal family, with Pakistan International Airlines giving two of the airline's first aircraft. With $10 million in start-up capital, it was required to operate independently of government subsidy. Pakistan International Airlines provided free training facilities to Emirates' cabin crew at Karachi airport. The airline was headed by Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the airline's present chairman. In the years following its founding, the airline expanded both its fleet and its destinations. In October 2008, Emirates moved all operations at Dubai International Airport to Terminal 3.
Emirates operates a mixed fleet of Airbus and Boeing wide-body aircraft, and is one of the few airlines to operate an all-wide-body aircraft fleet (excluding Emirates Executive). As of December 2021, Emirates is the largest Airbus A380 operator with 119 aircraft in service, and with one aircraft having been retired. Since its introduction, the Airbus A380 has become an integral part of the Emirates fleet, especially on long-haul, high-density routes

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NK28EP - EasyJet plc (styled as easyJet) is a British multinational low-cost airline group headquartered at London Luton Airport. It operates domestic and international scheduled services on 927 routes in more than 34 countries via its affiliate airlines EasyJet UK, EasyJet Switzerland, and EasyJet Europe. EasyJet plc is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. EasyGroup Holdings Ltd, the investment vehicle of the airline's founder, Greek-Cypriot businessman Stelios Haji-Ioannou, is the largest shareholder with a 15.27% stake (as of September 2021). It employs circa 13,000 people, based throughout Europe but mainly in the UK.
Since its establishment in 1995, EasyJet has expanded through a combination of acquisitions, and base openings fuelled by consumer demand for low-cost air travel. The group, along with associate companies EasyJet UK, EasyJet Europe and EasyJet Switzerland, operates 308 aircraft. It has 29 bases across Europe, the largest being Gatwick. In 2014, the airline carried more than 65 million passengers, making it the second-largest budget airline in Europe by number of passengers carried, behind Ryanair.
EasyJet was featured in the television series Airline, broadcast on ITV (19982007), which followed the airline's operations at London Luton and later at other bases. Its pilot training scheme was the subject of another ITV television series, easyJet: Inside the Cockpit, which premiered in August 2017.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NK28M5 - A Jet2holidays aircraft is pictured at Manchester Airport, Ringway, with the airport control tower rising behind it on the apron in daylight. The image works well as an editorial illustration of UK and EU aviation fuel supply risk, rising jet fuel prices and the possibility of higher air fares if Middle East conflict continues to disrupt oil and refined-product markets. It is especially relevant to coverage of the continuing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, and the wider threat to tanker traffic and petroleum flows through the Strait of Hormuz. The International Energy Agency said in April 2026 that attacks on energy infrastructure in the Middle East and restrictions to tanker movements through Hormuz had led to the largest oil supply disruption in history, tightening product markets and pushing prices sharply higher. IATA's Jet Fuel Price Monitor says the global average jet fuel price rose to 181.22 US dollars per barrel last week, while IATA also notes that fuel is one of the largest airline operating costs, commonly accounting for around 25 to 30 per cent of total operating expenses. That makes the photograph commercially useful for stories about aviation energy security, airline resilience, fuel hedging, higher holiday prices, package holidays, flight disruption risk, possible route cuts and the vulnerability of European leisure travel to external energy shocks. Jet2.com says it is the UK's third largest airline, adding extra relevance for mainstream consumer travel coverage. Care is needed not to imply that this specific aircraft was delayed, cancelled or affected by a local shortage, because the image simply shows a normal airport operating scene. Even so, it is a strong documentary image of the environment in which global energy-market pressure can feed through into airline economics, summer ticket prices, airport operations and the wider travel industry.

The airline operates more than 1,000 flights per week to over 120 passenger and cargo destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America, with a fleet of 102 Airbus and Boeing aircraft as of February 2020. In 2015, Etihad carried 14.8 million passengers, a 22.3% increase from the previous year, delivering revenues of US$9.02 billion and net profits of US$103 million. Its main base is Abu Dhabi International Airport.
In addition to its core activity of passenger transportation, Etihad also operates Etihad Holidays and Etihad Cargo. Etihad established its airline alliance, Etihad Airways Partners, in October 2015 which was disbanded in 2018 after several of its members fell into financial difficulties. Etihad Airways holds minority equity investments in the participating airlines, as well as having had a stake in Virgin Australia, until its insolvency in April 2020 with no return on investment. Booking for these airlines was consolidated under one network.
The emirate of Abu Dhabi was a joint-owner of Gulf Air along with Bahrain, Qatar, and the Sultanate of Oman. Abu Dhabi International Airport was one of Gulf Air's bases and hubs from the 1970s until September 2005, when Abu Dhabi withdrew from the airline, leaving it an Oman and Bahrain-owned airline until the former's exit in 2007 to focus on Oman Air.
In July 2003, future UAE president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who wanted an airline for Abu Dhabi, issued a Royal (Amiri) Decree that established Etihad Airways as the second flag carrier of the UAE

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBJ9WD - Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and leisure/entertainment destination of Long Island on the Coney Island Channel, which is part of the Lower Bay in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City. Coney Island was formerly the westernmost of the Outer Barrier islands on Long Island's southern shore, but in the early 20th century it became connected to the rest of Long Island by land fill. The residential portion of the peninsula is a community of 60,000 people in its western part, with Sea Gate to its west, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach to its east, the Lower Bay to the south, and Gravesend to the north.
Coney Island was originally part of the colonial town of Gravesend. By the mid-19th century, it became a seaside resort, and by the late 19th century, amusement parks were also built at the location. The attractions reached a historical peak during the first half of the 20th century, declining in popularity after World War II and following years of neglect. The area was revitalized with the opening of the MCU Park in 2001 and several amusement rides in the 2010s.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy HDEYMK - Since the onset of the Troubles in 1971, Nationalist and Loyalist communities throughout Northern Ireland have been divided by Peace Walls. These large stone and steel constructions were designed to protect neighbourhoods from sporadic attacks and retain a sense of peace and protection.
Of the city's 17 walls, West Belfast's sections are the most visited. Once in the area it's easy to determine which side of the divide you're on: red, white and blue kerbstones, Loyalist murals and Union Jacks indicate you're on the Shankill. If the kerbs are green, white and gold, the flag is Irish and the murals are Republican, you're on the Falls.
You can cross from one side to the other via access roads at Lanark Way and Northumberland Street. These roads close in times of heightened tension, which may well be the case during the marching season (see The Twelfth).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EYAX5J - The Warrington Club is one of this historic town's few remaining traditional establishments
founded in 1876 by leading Victorian industrialists, statesmen and professionals for the sole purpose of providing a venue where members could meet on a regular basis in comfortable surroundings to enjoy each others company and meaningful conversation.
The Club offered an excellent opportunity for business ideas, suggestions and deals to be discussed considering that in those early days there was no other means of communication except for a rather hit and miss postal service. In the modern idiom the Club provided what is now known as net working'.
The building occupied by the Warrington Club in Bold Street was purpose built using monies raised by the original 76 founder members. Those familiar with Warrington will no doubt recognise the names of some of the founder members.
Arthur Bennett (1862- 1931) a chartered accountant, was a remarkable character. He served as a Councellor and Alderman for many years and had hopes of making Warrington a Garden City'. Sadly, the Great War shattered the dream but the quality of the one completed terrace of houses in Sankey gives some evidence of his vision. The foundation stone was laid by the great pioneer of garden cities, Ebenezer Howard. Bennett was a prolific writer. His Dream of a Warringtonian', if romanticised, is still a very readable history of our 1,000 year old town, and his collection of poems Songs of a Chartered Accountant' posesses both warmth and charm. John, Earnest Crosfield of Joseph Crosfield & Sons Ltd. Finally, Sir Gilbert Greenall MP, Lieut Col. Greenall and Captain Grenall of the Greenall Whitley Brewery. Paul, Harry and George Rylands founders of the world famous Rylands Brothers Ltd, Wire & Nails manufacturers hence the obvious connection with the local Rugby League team known as The Wires'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy EDR5R8 - Postage stamps and postal history of Australia
The six self-governing Australian colonies that formed the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901 operated their own postal service and issued their own stamps see articles on the systems on New South Wales (first stamps issued 1850), Victoria (1850), Tasmania (1853), Western Australia (1854), South Australia (1855) and Queensland (1860). Under section 51(v) of the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution 1900, postal, telegraphic, telephonic, and other like services became a Commonwealth responsibility.
The Commonwealth's Postmaster-General's Department became effective on 1 March 1901 (this agency would be disaggregated on 1 July 1975 in part into the Australian Postal Commission trading as Australia Post). All then-current colony stamps which continued on sale became de facto Commonwealth stamps. Some of these stamps continued to be used for some time following the introduction in 1913 of the Commonwealth's uniform postage stamp series. These stamps continued to be valid for postage until 14 February 1966 when the introduction of decimal currency made all stamps bearing the earlier currency invalid for use.
There have been many special issues. The first Christmas stamp appeared on 6 November 1957. In recent years, designs for the Christmas issue have alternated each year between the religious and the secular. From 1993, in October of every year, Australia Post has commemorated Stamp Collecting month with special issues, typically featuring topics that are of interest to children such as pets, native fauna and space. Commencing with the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, during the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, stamps featuring Australians who have won an Olympic gold medal are issued on the next postal business day after the achievement.

Adding up some subsets of its divisors (e.g., 1, 4, 5, 10, 20 and 40) gives 80, hence 80 is a semiperfect number.
Eighty is the standard TCP/IP port number for HTTP connections. Old MSDOS displays used to have 80 characters per line, in computing, derived from the number of columns in IBM cards.
According to Exodus 7:7, Moses was 80 years old when he initially spoke to Pharaoh on behalf of his people. Today, 80 years of age is the upper age limit for cardinals to vote in papal elections. The hall is home to the The Hallé orchestra, the UK's oldest extant symphony orchestra, and is the primary concert venue for the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. The building sits on a bed of 280 springs, which help reduce external noise.
The venue is named after the Third Duke of Bridgewater who commissioned the eponymous Bridgewater Canal that crosses Manchester, although the hall is situated on a specially constructed arm of the Rochdale Canal.

After its most recent renovation in 1994, it seats 1,915. It is one of the major venues of the annual summer Edinburgh International Festival and is the Edinburgh venue for the Scottish Opera and the Scottish Ballet.
The present theatre's location is Edinburgh's longest continuous theatre site, for there has been a theatre in that location since 1830. From being Dunedin Hall, the Royal Amphitheatre, Alhambra Music Hall, the Queen's Theatre, Pablo Fanque's Amphitheatre, and Newsome's Circus, the site became the Empire Palace Theatre, the first of the famous Moss Empires' chain, opening on 7 November 1892.
Designed by the great British theatre architect, Frank Matcham, (who built the London Coliseum, among others) its décor was lavish, with elephants with Nubian riders, nymphs and cherubs in abundance on the plasterwork, and it seated 3000 people on four levels.

This is one of my favourite tracks of all time. 'Sister Europe' is a song by the English band The Psychedelic Furs from the band's 1980 first album, The Psychedelic Furs. Written by the band and produced by Steve Lillywhite, it was released in February 1980 as the album's second single.
This photograph echo's the cover of the single that shows the continental departures board at what looks like Charing Cross railway station London.
According to Richard Butler of the band, the lyrics conveyed sadness over his then-girlfriend moving away, and were written using imagery, 'instead of saying 'My bird's gone to Italy and I miss her''.
The Psychedelic Furs are an English post-punk/New Wave band founded in 1977. Led by singer Richard Butler and his brother Tim on bass guitar, the Psychedelic Furs are one of the many acts spawned from the British post-punk scene. Their music went through several phases, from an initially austere art rock sound, later touching on new wave and hard rock.
They scored several hits in their early career, but were launched to international attention in 1986 when the film director John Hughes used their song 'Pretty in Pink' for his movie of the same name. A newly recorded version of the song became the Psychedlic Furs' biggest hit to that time. 'Heartbreak Beat', from their 1987 album Midnight to Midnight, was the Furs' biggest Top 40 entry in the US.
The Psychedelic Furs went on hiatus in 1991, and the Butler brothers formed a new band called Love Spit Love. The Psychedelic Furs later regrouped in 2001 and continue to perform around the world.
St Pancras railway station, also known as London St Pancras and since 2007 as St Pancras International, is a railway station terminus celebrated for its Victorian architecture. The Grade I listed building stands on Euston Road in St Pancras, London Borough of Camden, between the British Library, King's Cross station and the Regent's Canal.
It was opened in 1868 by the Midland Railway as the southern terminus of its main line, which connected London with the East Midlands and Yorkshire. When it opened, the arched Barlow train shed was the largest single-span roof in the world.
After escaping planned demolition in the 1960s, the complex was renovated and expanded during the 2000s at a cost of \u00a3800 million with a ceremony attended by the Queen and extensive publicity introducing it as a public space. A security-sealed terminal area was constructed for Eurostar services to Continental Europe via High Speed 1 and the Channel Tunnel, with platforms for domestic trains to the north and south-east of England.
The restored station has 15 platforms, a shopping centre and a bus station, and is served by London Underground's King's Cross St Pancras tube station. St Pancras is owned by London and Continental Railways, along with the adjacent urban regeneration area known as King's Cross Central, and is one of 18 British stations managed by Network Rail. The redeveloped terminus has been described by the travel writer Simon Calder as 'the world's most wonderful railway station'
