Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EG4BH2 - Warrington Food & Drink Festival on Sunday 17 May 2026, photographed on the lawn and event space beside Warrington Town Hall and Bank Park off Sankey Street. The wide view shows visitors sitting at long outdoor tables, a white marquee, food and drink stalls, trees in fresh spring leaf, blue sky, broken cloud and bright sunshine across the town centre grass. The scene is useful for editorial coverage of local food festivals, free family events, weekend leisure, civic spaces, high street footfall, outdoor dining, independent traders, market stalls, tourism, town centre regeneration, community events and the role of councils, BIDs and cultural partners in bringing people into centres.
The 2026 Warrington Food & Drink Festival was promoted as a two-day free event across Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 May, taking place in Bank Park and the grounds of Warrington Town Hall. Public listings described street food, independent producers, local hospitality businesses, chef demonstrations, workshops, live activity and family entertainment. This image captures the pleasure of the event rather than a single stall: people eating, drinking, chatting and resting in a civic green space, with the red-brick and stone Town Hall visible beyond the marquee.
Warrington Town Hall adds strong heritage context. Originally built in 1750 as Bank Hall for merchant Thomas Patten and later acquired by the council in 1870, the Grade I listed Palladian building remains one of Warrington's best-known civic landmarks. Its grounds, famous for the Golden Gates at the Sankey Street entrance, make a distinctive setting for a modern food and drink festival. The photograph links Georgian civic architecture, public parkland and contemporary placemaking, making it relevant to stories about Warrington, Cheshire events, North West England tourism, local economies, hospitality, cultural programming, public space, community wellbeing and the continuing use of historic town halls as active civic venues.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EGG76R - Street photograph of a Leeds Tattoo Expo poster displayed on an advertising panel on The Headrow in Leeds city centre, West Yorkshire. The poster uses bold vintage tattoo flash styling, red lettering, decorative scrollwork, a female pin-up style portrait, peacock fan imagery and circus or fairground-inspired graphic design to promote tickets for the tattoo convention. It is a strong editorial image for tattoo culture, body art, urban advertising, alternative fashion, creative events, youth culture and the wider growth of tattooing as a mainstream leisure and lifestyle industry. The poster's wording includes Leeds Tattoo Expo, First Direct Arena and tickets on sale now, tying the street promotion to the city's major indoor venue and live events economy. The official Leeds Tattoo Expo information page says the eleventh annual event is being held at First Direct Arena, with over 200 tattoo artists, boutique traders, entertainment and competitions, giving the image relevance for tattoo artists, collectors, independent makers and specialist event marketing. The photograph is also useful for stories about Leeds city centre, The Headrow, public realm advertising, poster art, graphic design, subcultures moving into mainstream venues, city break entertainment and the commercial promotion of weekend events. The weather appears dull or overcast, with soft daylight on the pavement and building façade, suggesting a typical British urban day without strong shadows. The image captures the contrast between ornate tattoo-inspired illustration and the formal stone architecture of central Leeds, helping it work as a stock image for alternative culture within a traditional civic cityscape. It can support features on tattoos, body modification, personal identity, event ticketing, local tourism, creative industries, independent traders, street-level marketing and the way specialist cultural scenes are promoted in busy northern city centres.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EGG7CW - Wide panoramic view inside Leeds Corn Exchange in Leeds city centre, West Yorkshire, showing the dramatic oval trading hall, curved upper gallery, patterned glazed roof and rows of arched shopfronts now occupied by independent retailers. The image records one of the city's most distinctive Victorian commercial buildings, designed by Cuthbert Brodrick and opened in the 1860s when Leeds was expanding rapidly as a major centre of trade, cloth, finance and civic ambition. Originally built for the buying and selling of grain, the Corn Exchange has been reused as a shopping, food, craft and creative retail destination, making it a strong visual example of adaptive reuse, heritage regeneration and town centre placemaking. The broad angle captures the full sweep of the circular interior, from timber floorboards and black metal balustrades to colourful unit doors, café seating, shoppers, browsers and people resting in the central space below. It is useful for editorial themes around Victorian architecture, listed buildings, independent shopping, alternative retail, city centre regeneration, reuse of historic property, high street change, local makers, small businesses and visitor attractions in Yorkshire. The curved plan, repeated arches and roof structure emphasise Brodrick's confident engineering and the building's continuing public life. Photographed indoors in soft natural daylight filtered through the glass roof, the scene has an even, calm atmosphere with no harsh shadows, suggesting a cloudy or bright overcast day outside. The image also has value for stories about heritage-led economic renewal, the move away from conventional chain retail, sustainable reuse of existing buildings, tourism, shopping habits after online disruption and Leeds as a northern city balancing commercial history with a contemporary independent cultural scene. Visible seating and shopfronts give the space scale, making the panorama useful for travel, retail and architecture features.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EGWM3R - Very wide panoramic interior view of Leeds Corn Exchange, showing the sweeping oval shopping hall, domed glazed roof, circular balconies, arched shopfronts, colourful doors, independent retailers, cafe seating and visitors inside one of Leeds city centre's most distinctive Victorian landmarks. The image is useful for editorial coverage of alternative retail, independent shops, heritage shopping, city centre regeneration, adaptive reuse, Victorian architecture, Yorkshire tourism, Leeds visitor attractions and the continuing reinvention of historic commercial buildings. Leeds Corn Exchange was designed by Cuthbert Brodrick, the architect also associated with Leeds Town Hall, and was built between 1861 and 1863 for the viewing and trading of corn. Historic England lists the building as Grade I and records its oval plan, two storeys over a basement, partly glazed dome roof, semi-circular and elliptical iron ribs, balcony access and cast-iron railings. The original design was shaped by the need to bring in clear northern light so merchants could inspect grain samples accurately, making the roof, plan and interior arrangement practical as well as dramatic. Today the building functions as a boutique retail and leisure destination, with small shops, creative businesses, food and drink uses, events and casual seating replacing its original agricultural trading role. This panorama captures the building's scale and symmetry better than a tighter view, showing how the upper galleries, shop units and central floor work together as a public interior. It can illustrate stories about retail diversity, high street change, independent business, heritage conservation, Leeds architecture, urban tourism, reuse of listed buildings and the shift from nineteenth-century commodity trading to twenty-first-century shopping and leisure. The soft interior light, busy seating areas and colourful shopfronts give the photograph a lively but architectural feel, making it suitable for travel, planni

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EKNXPF - Arthur Welham Ltd, a long-established fishmonger stall inside Leeds Kirkgate Market, with large blue-and-white signage advertising Fresh local & exotic fish and established over 100 years. The scene is in the covered market hall, where shoppers browse iced trays of fish and seafood beneath the adjoining Ramsdens sign, with other retail signage visible in the background. It is a documentary image of a surviving food trader within one of the best-known municipal markets in northern England, useful for editorial features on high streets, independent retail, food provenance, fresh fish, market shopping, family firms, changing habits and the survival of specialist traders in city centres. Arthur Welham is linked with Ramsdens, another Leeds fishmonger name visible in the photograph, and local history material records the two stalls as part of one family-run business, with the Ramsden family connected to Arthur Welham's business since the late 1960s. Leeds City Council has also described the Ramsdens stall as a family business of more than 100 years. The image captures the practical retail culture of a British indoor market: bright stall fascias, tiled walls, stacked crates, chilled displays, winter clothing, market staff in aprons and customers making everyday food purchases. Kirkgate Market is associated with Leeds civic commerce and food shopping, from historic covered halls to modern city-centre regeneration, and remains a useful visual shorthand for Yorkshire retail heritage. For stock photography buyers, the value is in the readable business name, visible produce, recognisable Leeds market setting and human activity. It can illustrate stories about traditional fishmongers, fresh seafood, local food economies, market halls, independent family trade, urban shopping, northern England, retail resilience, heritage markets and the contrast between long-established specialist stalls and newer mobile or convenience outlets nearby.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EF6BER - Interior view of The Fish Hut, a traditional fish and chip shop on Liverpool Road in Manchester city centre, showing a customer at the counter, a member of staff serving food in takeaway boxes, heated display cabinets, menu boards and the practical stainless steel counter area of a working British chippy. The visible menu and shop sign link the photograph directly with everyday high street food, takeaway culture and the rising cost of a fish supper, with cod, haddock, chips, pies, sausages, sauces and meal deals forming part of the familiar language of British fish and chip shops. The Fish Hut is listed at 27 Liverpool Road, Manchester, M3 4NW, close to Castlefield, Deansgate and the Science and Industry Museum area, making it part of the food offer around one of Manchester's busiest visitor and nightlife districts. The image has strong editorial value for stories about fish and chips, casual dining, independent takeaways, food inflation, energy bills, hospitality pressures, staff costs, ingredient prices, city centre rents and the squeeze on food businesses and customers. Fish and chips remain one of Britain's most recognisable takeaway meals, but the scene can also illustrate how a simple fish supper has become a sharper cost of living symbol as prices rise across food, cooking oil, white fish, potatoes, packaging and utilities. The photograph shows a clean, modernised interior, with digital screens, a black menu wall, bright counter lighting and prepared food ready for service. The visible customers and staff add human context without making any individual the sole subject. The indoor setting means there is no visible weather, although the lighting and muted window view suggest a daytime or early evening city centre visit. This commercially useful stock image suits features on Manchester eating out, British takeaway culture, fish and chip shops, hospitality economics, consumer spending, inflation, local business survival and changing urban food habits.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EF6C1T - Dusk exterior view of Peveril of the Peak, the distinctive green tiled Manchester pub on Great Bridgewater Street, photographed with warm interior lights glowing through the windows and a deep blue evening sky above the city centre. Known locally as The Pev, the pub stands as a small, detached triangular survivor amid much taller offices, apartments and modern development, giving the scene a strong contrast between old Manchester drinking culture and the newer built environment around it. The glazed green and yellow ceramic tiled frontage, painted name band, decorative doorway and hanging pub sign make it one of the most instantly recognisable traditional boozers in Manchester. Central Manchester CAMRA lists Peveril of the Peak at 127 Great Bridgewater Street, Manchester, M1 5JQ, and describes its real ale, real fire, separate bars and historic character. CAMRA's heritage pub listing says the green tiled exterior hides an interior with polished wood, stained glass and traditional bench seating, with original bell pushes still present in parts of the pub. Historic England lists the building as Grade II, with the statutory address of 127 Chepstow Street, reflecting its corner position between Chepstow Street and Great Bridgewater Street. The image has strong editorial and commercial value for stories about Manchester pubs, CAMRA, cask ale, real ale, pub preservation, listed buildings, hospitality, nightlife, local identity, urban heritage and the survival of proper city centre pubs. The calm dusk setting, glowing windows and empty street frontage give the photograph a slightly nostalgic mood, suggesting an evening pint before the pub fills up. This is a useful stock image for features on British pub culture, northern social history, traditional pub architecture, Manchester tourism, conservation, changing city centres, independent hospitality and the continuing appeal of classic real ale houses.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4M8E - Editorial photograph of a Wigan Eats sign above a town centre food business, showing the blue and orange branding, the words WIGAN EATS and ORDER ONLINE TODAY, and a logo featuring a pie and fork. The image connects Wigan's local takeaway culture, mobile ordering apps and independent hospitality with the town's wider reputation for pies, pie barms and Wigan Kebab food traditions. It can illustrate local food delivery platforms, alternatives to national takeaway apps, digital ordering, high street hospitality, small business marketing, regional identity, northern food culture and the continued commercial use of place-based branding. The photograph also has editorial relevance to Wigan's May 2026 local election story. Official ward results show Reform UK wins in Wigan Central and Wigan West, while reporting after the election said Reform UK made very large gains across the borough. However, the available post-election summaries indicate Labour still retained overall control of Wigan Council, so the wording should avoid saying Reform became the council's leadership. In political use, this image can illustrate a sharp local electoral shift, Labour losses in a long-standing Labour area, voter disillusionment, right-wing populist campaigning, Nigel Farage's party gaining council seats, and pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer following poor Labour local election results nationally. The sign's upbeat food-ordering message and proud pie symbol sit against a much harder political context, making the image suitable for articles about Wigan, Greater Manchester, local democracy, northern English towns, the cost of living, takeaway spending, hospitality, food delivery technology, town-centre businesses, working-class identity, post-industrial communities, local culture and changing party loyalties. Visible brickwork, the projecting shop sign and daylight street scene give the image a documentary feel for contemporary Britain in spring or early summer.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EE4MB4 - Traditional Sweeties is photographed inside Wigan Market Hall, a busy indoor market in Wigan town centre, Greater Manchester. The image shows an old fashioned sweet stall packed with jars, tubs, trays and hanging packets of confectionery, with signage advertising traditional sweeties, handmade sweets, candy floss, chocolates, popcorn, cakes and ice cold cans. It captures the colourful detail of a long established British market retail tradition, where sweets are sold loose by weight, displayed in clear containers and chosen from counters rather than supermarket shelving. The stall includes retro sweets, pick and mix, boiled sweets, lollipops, wrapped candy, fudge, chocolate bars, biscuits and children's treats, making it useful for editorial themes around local shopping, town centre markets, independent traders, nostalgia, childhood memories and the continuing appeal of traditional confectionery. The indoor setting, strip lighting, glass display cabinets and dense stock presentation give the photograph a documentary feel, showing the everyday character of Wigan's covered market economy rather than a staged shop interior. It can illustrate stories about high street change, market halls, small businesses, retail regeneration, local food culture, family treats, sugar, childhood consumption, impulse buying and the survival of specialist stalls in northern English towns. The scene also has strong visual keywords for old fashioned sweet shop, retro candy, British sweets, confectionery counter, pick n mix, jars of sweets, market stall, Wigan shopping, Greater Manchester retail, independent trader, local market, indoor market hall and town centre consumer culture. The bright colours and full shelves suggest a working stall open for trade, photographed under artificial indoor lighting with no visible exterior weather, giving a clear sense of a sheltered market environment suitable for year round shopping.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E9APAB - A close, editorial still life of a vintage E G Parriss wristwatch laid across an old town plan of Nuneaton, Warwickshire. The aged cream dial, Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds register and worn leather strap give the photograph a strong period feel, linking personal timekeeping with local history, family business, craftsmanship and the Midlands tradition of practical engineering. The map beneath shows the printed title Town Plan of Nuneaton and surrounding streets, turning the image into a compact visual story about place, memory and the skilled repair and making of watches and clocks before disposable consumer electronics. E G Parriss is a name connected with Nuneaton horology: the Science Museum Group records the Parriss rolling-ball free pendulum clock as made by E G Parriss in Nuneaton in the 1940s. Separate Parriss family jeweller history also describes a watchmaking line that began with Joseph Parriss in Rugby, with Ernest Parriss and Beatrice later opening a shop in Nuneaton before moving to Sheringham in 1947. This photograph is useful for searches around British watchmakers, local jewellers, antique watches, interwar or early twentieth century design, family firms, craft skills, horological heritage, collectable wristwatches, Warwickshire history, Nuneaton nostalgia, old maps, town planning, genealogy, local archives and the passing of time. The warm patina of the dial contrasts with the black and white printed map, making it suitable for editorial use around regional manufacturing, the survival of small specialist trades, vintage retail, repair culture, museum collections, family history research and the way everyday objects can anchor a story about a town. It could also illustrate articles on high street jewellers, inherited possessions, analogue technology, conservation, restoration, watch servicing, local studies, historic mapping and the value of named provincial makers outside London, Coventry and Birmingham.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E424BK - Outset co-working space on Sankey Street in Warrington town centre is shown with exterior signage advertising co-working, café space and the phrase meet, eat and work. The building sits close to Bank Park, Warrington Town Hall, the Golden Gates and Warrington Bank Quay station, making it a useful editorial image of flexible workspace in a regional town centre. Outset describes itself as a workspace and co-working community, offering businesses, freelancers and creatives a place to work under one roof, with offices, hot desks, meeting rooms and conference space. The photograph is commercially useful for stories about small businesses, start-ups, freelancers, hybrid working, flexible offices, serviced offices, town centre regeneration, business support and the changing use of traditional office buildings after the growth of remote and flexible working. The visible orange co-working banner, green café banner, large Outset window graphics and Arpley Street sign create strong documentary detail for coverage of modern workspaces, shared offices, business communities, networking, entrepreneurship and local economic development. It can also illustrate Warrington's role as a business location between Manchester and Liverpool, with good rail access and a growing professional services base. The image works for features about start-up culture, independent workers, hot desking, meeting-room hire, office downsizing, workspace subscriptions, business incubators and the challenge of keeping town centres active during the working day. As a stock image, it records a practical example of how older urban office space is being rebranded around collaboration, convenience and community rather than conventional long lease offices.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3BKDJGJ - The exterior of Rory's Fishing Tackle, a long-established specialist fishing and angling shop located in the Temple Bar area of Dublin city centre, Ireland. The image shows the premises closed, with metal shutters pulled down and decorated with painted fishing-themed artwork, including fish and angling imagery.
Temple Bar is best known as Dublin's cultural and nightlife quarter, but it has also historically been home to small independent retailers serving niche interests such as fishing, music, and crafts. Shops like Rory's Fishing Tackle reflect an earlier phase of the area's commercial life, prior to its transformation into a tourism- and hospitality-led district.
The red brick corner building and layered signage give the scene a slightly timeworn appearance, capturing the impact of changing retail patterns, rising rents, and shifting economic priorities in Dublin's city centre. The closed shopfront stands as a visual marker of the challenges faced by specialist independent retailers in high-profile urban locations.
This image is suitable for editorial use illustrating Dublin retail change, independent businesses, urban decline and regeneration, specialist shops, angling culture in Ireland, and the evolving character of Temple Bar beyond its tourist image.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3EDM031 - A close documentary image of a UK Parliamentary general election ballot paper for the Warrington South constituency, photographed inside a polling booth with the official pencil ready for marking a choice. The ballot lists a range of candidates and political parties visible on the paper, including Labour, Conservative, Reform UK, Green Party, Liberal Democrats, the Social Democratic Party and an independent candidate. The scene is useful for illustrating democratic participation, voter choice, political pluralism and the practical mechanics of casting a vote in Britain. It shows the familiar quiet moment before a ballot is completed, with the paper laid flat on the dark booth surface, the attached polling station pencil beside it and party logos printed in the right-hand column. The image has strong editorial relevance for the 2024 UK general election, Warrington South, Cheshire politics, constituency contests, electoral administration, polling stations, ballot design, voter identity rules, local democracy, political campaigning and parliamentary representation. It can also support features on first past the post elections, turnout, tactical voting, public trust, protest votes, party competition and the changing political landscape in the North West of England. The visible mix of parties makes the photograph commercially useful for neutral political coverage, election explainers and civic education, as it represents a broad choice rather than focusing on one party alone. Warrington South has been a closely watched parliamentary seat and the official parliamentary result records the 2024 contest as a Labour hold by Sarah Hall after seven candidates stood. The photograph is especially relevant to coverage of polling day, ballot papers, voting booths, candidate lists, constituency democracy, voter behaviour, local government areas and the administration of UK elections.

It would suit editorial use on shopping, retail change, independent traders, high-street survival, tourism, local economies, consumer habits and the visual identity of British town and city centres. Searchable related phrases include building, markets, historic, stalls, Market Place, buildings, welcome, city, Durham, centre, architecture, history, plus wider ideas such as local identity, public realm, urban detail, social history, commercial change, everyday Britain, documentary photography and place-based storytelling. The composition gives designers scope for captions, page furniture, social media crops, report covers and article thumbnails, while the detailed captioning makes it more discoverable for searches using both specific place names and broader themes. Because the subject is clearly labelled or visually distinctive, it can also work well in search-led usage where the buyer needs immediate recognition at small web-preview size.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RJ3YPX - A busy outdoor seating area at the Buxton Brewery Tap House located within the Pavilion Building at Pavilion Gardens in Buxton, Derbyshire, England. Groups of people sit at wooden benches enjoying craft beer and real ale on a warm, sunny day, with blue skies overhead and parasols providing shade. A chalkboard sign in the foreground advertises beers from Buxton Brewery, a well-known independent brewery closely associated with the Peak District and modern British craft-beer culture.
The Pavilion Building forms part of the wider Pavilion Gardens complex, a historic Edwardian leisure and events space near the centre of Buxton, a spa town renowned for its Georgian and Victorian architecture and its role as a gateway to the Peak District National Park. The scene captures contemporary British outdoor drinking culture, combining heritage surroundings with modern hospitality and tourism. The image conveys relaxation, social interaction, and seasonal enjoyment, typical of summer afternoons in English market towns.

The Harrogate Bus Company operates both local and regional bus services in North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire, England. It is a subsidiary of Transdev Blazefield
In July 2016, the company was again rebranded, now operating as The Harrogate Bus Company. To coincide with this, a huge fleet upgrade was undertaken, which included the introduction of the current two-tone red livery, as well as a refurbishment of the company's route 1 branded single-deck Wright Eclipse Urban bodied Volvo B7RLE vehicles to set the new standard specification of free WiFi, USB charging capabilities and audio/visual next stop information. Other Wright Eclipse Urban vehicles were transferred from some of Transdev's other subsidiaries to replace the older Wright Renown bodied Volvo B10BLE single-decker vehicles which were branded for the route. 2016 also saw the launch of 14 new high-specification Wright Gemini 3 bodied Volvo B5TL double-deck vehicles on the route 36, replacing the older Wright Eclipse Gemini vehicles. The 36 also received its own new brand Riding Redefined as well as a new two-tone red and black livery. In July 2017, a new brand was introduced for the route 770/771, which saw the services become renumbered alongside the new brand name known as Superior 70/71. A fleet of Wright Eclipse Urban 2 bodied Volvo B7RLE single-deck vehicles were transferred from Transdev's operations in Burnley and refurbished to equip them with WiFi, USB charging capabilities and audio/visual next stop information. The new fleet entered service on the route on 23 July, eventually replacing the entire fleet of Volvo B10BLE Wright Renown vehicles, which then left the fleet in 2018. In April 2018, due to the loss of council funding for the 70 to Connexionsbuses, the 71 was again renumbered and rebranded, now known as Simple 7.
In partnership with DalesBus, the service between Harrogate and Skipton was reintroduced in May 2021

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGJ40 - This image shows the exterior of Radio Northwich, a community radio station based in Northwich, Cheshire. The station operates as a local, non-commercial broadcaster, providing a mix of music, local news, interviews, and community-focused programming aimed at serving residents of Northwich and the surrounding area.
Radio Northwich broadcasts on FM locally and also streams online, reflecting the hybrid nature of modern community radio in the UK. Programming typically includes locally produced shows, specialist music output, and coverage of local events, charities, and voluntary groups, with a strong emphasis on community participation and volunteering.
The station is independently run and community-owned, operating on a not-for-profit basis rather than as part of a national commercial radio network. Community radio stations such as Radio Northwich play an important role in local media ecosystems, particularly as traditional local newspapers and commercial radio services have declined.
The photograph appears to have been taken in late-day light, with warm reflections visible in the glass frontage of the building. The modern exterior places the station firmly within Northwich town centre, highlighting the visibility and accessibility of community media within everyday urban life.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RA23DD - A view along Woburn Walk in Bloomsbury, central London, showing outdoor café seating and small independent businesses at numbers 35 Woburn Walk. The narrow pedestrian street is lined with Georgian terraced buildings, creating an intimate village-like atmosphere within the city centre.
Woburn Walk is one of London's earliest purpose-built pedestrian shopping streets and is closely associated with Bloomsbury's literary and cultural history. Today it remains a popular destination for cafés, specialist shops, and local visitors, blending residential architecture with relaxed street-level social life.
Photographed in natural daylight, the image captures everyday urban activity in central London, illustrating themes of café culture, historic streets, conservation areas, and the continued appeal of small-scale pedestrian environments in the capital. Seen in places like Woburn Walk, the idea that London neighbourhoods are uniformly dangerous quickly falls apart, yet the lazy narrative persists that the capital and its suburbs are defined by knife crime and disorder rather than by ordinary, peaceful life. Woburn Walk is quietly pedestrian, lined with small shops and cafes, people talking over coffee, children passing through, and neighbours using the street as an extension of their living space, a scene far closer to a village high street than to the sensational headlines that dominate national coverage. The reality is that most London streets, suburban and central alike, function exactly like this most of the time, shaped by routine, community habits, and long-established social norms rather than constant threat. Crime does exist, as it does in any large city, but the disproportionate focus on the most extreme incidents distorts public perception and flattens a complex urban landscape into something unrecognisable to those who actually live there. Woburn Walk, calm, human-scaled and socially active, stands as a quiet rebuttal to that caricature, illustrating difference.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PFA9XY - Situated in the centre of Godalming, Record Corner first opened its doors in 1958 selling new vinyl records to the music lovers of Surrey and beyond. Our purpose was, and remains today, to provide a musical haven for every listener, across all musical genres. We continue to pride ourselves on our ability to offer knowledge and expertise alongside a personal service to every customer - whether they be a classical buff, indie kid or head! We revel in sourcing the obscure, rare, old, as well as new, and as times change and new technologies emerge, so too has Record Corner adapted it's offering to remain at the forefront of music retail.
Over the course of the last year's national lock-downs, we devoted our time to giving the shop the refresh it deserved. With a new coat of paint, upgraded displays and tons of second-hand vinyl, we take great pride in what we have achieved during such difficult times. Perhaps the biggest change of all is our state-of-the-art coffee machine. Being located so close to larger coffee chains, we knew we had to stand out if we were to succeed. After spending time sampling local competition and hiring the best barista in town, we truly believe our coffee is the the most delicious you will find.
As restrictions are slowly being lifted and life is getting back to normal, we look forward to seeing more of our incredible customers coming through our door for a coffee and a browse. We couldn't be more excited about the future of Record Corner - we have so many plans and ideas to see us into the next 60 years that we would love you to be part of.

On 4 May 2021 Russell Lovitt of HG Lovitt's, Filey, North Yorkshire, appeared at Scarborough Magistrates Court charged with failure to submit sales notes.
HG Lovitt's has been a registered buyer of first sale fish since October 2016. On 8 May 2019 MMO marine officers visited HG Lovitts and requested all of the submitted sales notes that they had for first sale purchases of fish. During this visit two receipt books were removed for further assessment, which showed over 370 purchases of fish had non-submitted sales notes.
Mr Lovitt pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay a fine of £4,000, £1,230 in costs and a £190 victim surcharge.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD2424 - This image shows a freshly prepared cappuccino served in a ceramic cup and saucer, accompanied by a teaspoon and placed on a wooden table. The coffee is topped with a layer of foamed milk lightly dusted with cocoa or chocolate powder, giving it a warm and inviting appearance.
The neutral-toned crockery and natural wood surface suggest a relaxed community café environment, typical of independent or socially focused cafés that emphasise ethical sourcing and fair-trade coffee. The close-up composition highlights the texture of the foam and the warmth of the drink, creating a comforting, everyday café scene.
Cappuccino is a popular espresso-based drink enjoyed throughout the UK, commonly associated with informal socialising, coffee breaks, and community spaces. Images like this are often used to illustrate themes of local café culture, ethical consumption, and simple pleasures in daily life.
The photograph works well for editorial, lifestyle, food, and hospitality contexts, offering a timeless representation of coffee culture without identifiable branding.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1RDF8 - The bridge, and the stone, stand over Glossop Brook, which disappears under the market place and carpark, and the line carved between the words Glossop and Whitfield is the centre line of the brook below. Victoria Bridge was built in 1837, the year Queen Victoria ascended the throne, hence the name. This new bridge replaced an old and narrow hump-backed pack-saddle one. Indeed, the original line of the road that led over the bridge, down Smithy Fold, and along Ellison Street is traceable, and is preserved particularly in the buildings of the Brook Tavern, Cafeteria, Glossop Pizza, Balti Palace (all built in 1832).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JY56XC - Crewe Market enjoys a rich history dating back to 1854, when The Cheese Hall was erected, housing over 2,000 tonnes of Cheshire cheese. A Corn Exchange and warehouse were built next door for butter and bacon, and over time the market cemented itself as a vibrant general market for Crewe.
Markets have been continually evolving for centuries, and the early 2000's saw the rise of online shopping, supermarkets and discount stores creating challenges for Crewe's General Market.
The Market Hall building needed investment to make it suitable for 21st-century shopping habits, in order to support a wide community of small businesses.
Crewe market has recently undergone major redevelopment works to breathe fresh life into this historic building. The historic Shambles units have been sympathetically restored, using heritage colours and materials to celebrate the market's history, while making it fit for an exciting future.
In May 2021, Crewe Market reopened, home to an exciting selection of independent businesses offering street food, fresh food and retail goods.
Crewe Market traders are local to the Crewe area, and represent the high standards of quality, customer service and passion that make small businesses the backbone of our town centres. Find out more about our traders here.
The Market Hall is now a mixed-use destination venue, offering customers the chance to shop, eat, drink, rest and play, with a weekly programme of family-friendly entertainment, and a regular schedule of pop-up and speciality markets, community events and family activities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JN5MRM - Eastgate, Chester is a permanently open gate through the Chester city walls, on the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix in Chester, Cheshire, England. It is a prominent landmark in the city of Chester and the Eastgate clock on top of it is said to be the most photographed clock in England after Big Ben.
The original gate was guarded by a timber tower which was replaced by a stone tower in the 2nd century, and this in turn was replaced probably in the 14th century. The present gateway dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone structure which carries the walkway forming part of Chester city walls. In 1899 a clock was added to the top of the gateway to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria two years earlier. It is carried on openwork iron pylons, has a clock face on all four sides, and a copper ogee cupola. The clock was designed by the Chester architect John Douglas. The whole structure, gateway and clock, was designated as a Grade I listed building on 28 July 1955

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JN5MX3 - Eastgate, Chester is a permanently open gate through the Chester city walls, on the site of the original entrance to the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix in Chester, Cheshire, England.
Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPB8W6 - Chipping Norton Town Hall is a municipal building in the Market Place, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England. The building, which is used as an events venue, is a Grade II* listed building.
The first municipal building in the town was a guildhall which was built for the Guild of the Holy Trinity in 1520.
The new building was designed by George Stanley Repton in the Palladian style, built in ashlar stone and was completed in 1842. The design involved a symmetrical main frontage with nine bays facing onto the east side of the High Street. It featured a flight of seven steps leading up to a tetrastyle portico with Doric order columns supporting an entablature and a pediment
there were niches in the outer bays on the front elevation. The western elevation was arcaded on the ground floor and was fenestrated by seven tall sash windows flanked by pilasters supporting an entablature
there were again niches in the end bays, which slightly projected forward. The end elevations were arcaded on the ground floor and were fenestrated by rows of three sash windows flanked by pilasters supporting entablatures and pediments. The northern pediment contained a clock in the tympanum and was surmounted by a bellcote. Internally, the principal rooms on the ground floor were the four cells for the incarceration of pretty criminals, the weighbridge for measuring the weight of goods being traded and the space for the horse-drawn fire engine, while the principal room on the first floor was the council chamber which was also used as a court room

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JPB8XH - Edward Stone (17021768) was a Church of England cleric who discovered the active ingredient of aspirin.
Life
Edward Stone was born in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, England, in 1702. His parents were Edward Stone, a gentleman farmer, and his first wife Elizabeth Reynolds. His mother having died, his father took a second wife, Elizabeth Grubb, in 1707
the Grubb family was to play a major role in Stone's life.
Stone went to Wadham College, Oxford, in 1720, where in 1730 he became a Fellow. In 1728 or 1729 he was ordained deacon and priest, and served as curate at Charlton-on-Otmoor.
Stone at one time lived on the site of the Hitchman Brewery in West Street, Chipping Norton, where a blue plaque has now been erected. He was buried in Horsenden in 1768
He experimented by drying a pound of willow bark and creating a powder which he gave to about fifty persons: it was consistently found to be a powerful astringent and very efficacious in curing agues and intermitting disorders.' He had discovered salicylic acid, the principal metabolite of aspirin. On 25 April 1763, he sent a letter announcing his discovery to George Parker, 2nd Earl of Macclesfield, President of the Royal Society.
A less corrosive compound of salicylic acid, acetylsalicylic acid, produced by reacting sodium salicylate with acetyl chloride, was developed from 1897 by Felix Hoffmann and Arthur Eichengrün. It was marketed by Bayer under the name Aspirin which was registered as a trade name on 23 January 1899. There is little evidence that Stone's idea was taken up by the medical profession. Jeffreys could only find one doctor in Hertfordshire and one pharmacist in Bath who tried using willow bark as a cure for the ague. The latter described it as cheaper than quinine, but never published any findings about its efficacy

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M0F6MF - XL Recordings is a British independent record label founded in 1989 by Tim Palmer and Nick Halkes. It has been ran and co-owned by Richard Russell since 1996. It forms part of the Beggars Group.
Although only releasing an average of six albums a year, XL has worked with Adele, Arca, Azealia Banks, Basement Jaxx, Beck, Dizzee Rascal, Electric Six, FKA Twigs, Giggs, Gil Scott-Heron, Gotan Project, The Horrors, Yaeji, Jai Paul, Jungle, King Krule, Lemon Jelly, M.I.A., Nines, Peaches, The Prodigy, Radiohead, Sampha, SBTRKT, Sigur Rós, Tyler, the Creator, Vampire Weekend, The White Stripes, and The xx. The label releases albums worldwide and operates across a range of genres
The label was launched in 1989 to release rave and dance music. It was originally an imprint of Beggars Banquet's more commercial dance label Citybeat,
During the early 1990s, XL releases were dance oriented ranging from Belgian techno (T99's Anasthasia) to breakbeat hardcore (SL2's On a Ragga Tip) to drum and bass (Jonny L's I'm Leavin'). This period of XL's history has been recorded on the XL Recordings Chapters compilation series. In 1993, Halkes left XL to form the EMI-owned commercial dance label Positiva, and subsequently his own independent commercial dance label Incentive. After Palmer retired in 1996, Russell took over the running of the business
June 2000 saw the release of Badly Drawn Boy's The Hour of Bewilderbeast which won the 2000 Mercury Music Prize. The next year, The White Stripes third album White Blood Cells was released together with reissues of the band's previous albums, The White Stripes and De Stijl. In 2003 XL Recordings won the Music Week A&R award, and also released The White Stripes fourth album Elephant

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2J92PEH - On his removal to Grappenhall in 1855, Thomas Leah an Independent Methodist Lay Preacher and a few fellow believers felt led to begin a new Church. Leah who had been converted to the Christian faith at a Camp Meeting at Cherry Lane, Lymm, in 1828, started the Church in a room above a bake house on Knutsford Road. The bake house stood behind what is today a modern detached house which is the third property from the junction of Knutsford and Chester Roads.
For 26 years the small fellowship went from strength to strength. By 1880 it became clear that the room above the bake house was no longer large enough. The Church Leaders decided to buy a plot of land on Chester Road and to erect a new Church for the expanding congregation. After some local opposition the Church was opened in 1881. The building today is part of a private residence between Euclid Avenue and Clarence Road.
Despite the Independent Methodists in Grappenhall having a new church building the congregation began a period of decline. The situation was reported to the Warrington Circuit of Independent Methodist Churches who appointed Robert Henshall and Arthur Jolley to endeavour to revive and resuscitate the Christian Cause at Grappenhall
Church Leaders decided to look for a new plot of land on which to build a larger building. Land in the Cross Lane area of Grappenhall was sought. After much negotiation land was bought on the corner of Knutsford Road and Knutsford Old Road. The new Church building opened in 1913 was located just outside the Parish of Grappenhall in what was then known as 'Latchford Without' and today is part of Stockton Heath Parish.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2C59GH7 - Weetwood Ales began brewing in 1992 when finding a great pint of cask ale was a challenge. The brewery was founded by Adrian Slater, a skilled brewer, and Roger Langford, a farmer with space in a barn and a love for proper beer. Roger's farm is in Weetwood Common, near Tarporley in Cheshire and the brewery took the name.
From day one, the brewery combined in-depth knowledge of a very large brewery with the passion, dedication, service and humility of a small business. Weetwood's enduring reputation for consistency and quality developed and a large, loyal following resulted.
Word spread, awards were won and output increased. A talented team of skilled people was built up and a new, bigger brewery was built. In 2014, Adrian and Roger took a well-deserved step back and new owners Phil McLaughlin and Laura Humby arrived. Phil and Laura are a brother-and-sister team who bring passion, experience and enthusiasm to continue to produce and supply great beers.
The founders remain involved along with most, if not all, of the original customers, still serving Weetwood Ales for beer lovers who come back for another.

Born: November 6, 1948
Died: September 17, 2018
DEREK Watson, who has died aged 69 following a short illness, was a man of many parts and arts. Those who knew the Edinburgh-born renaissance man as an actor performing under the name Derwent Watson at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow may not have been aware that Watson began his relationship with the Citz as a musical director on Christmas shows, becoming forever known thereafter as Uncle Derek.
Similarly, the youngsters watching Uncle Derek will not have known of Watson's passion for Wagner and other composers he was an authority on, penning several biographies on them, and slipping little classical passages into his compositions for the Citz's festive fare un-noticed. Nor might those who heard Watson give lectures on Wagner and others be aware of his long-standing role as proprietor of a bookshop in West Linton where he lived for more than 20 years, with both he and the shop immortalised in a novel by Alexander McCall Smith.
In 1994, having been a resident in West Linton for a decade, he opened Linton Books. Once he had retired from the theatre, the shop provided him with an alternative stage, playing' the proprietor of the shop to entertain customers. Book signings by authors included Alexander McCall Smith, whose second novel in the Sunday Philosophy Club series, Friends, Lovers, Chocolate, published in 2005, found the book's heroine Isabel Dalhousie visiting Derek in his capacity as bookseller. The shop itself featured during the unravelling of the story's mystery.
Being immortalised in such a way was the perfect compliment to Watson, who retained a curiosity for the finer things in life that went beyond his considerable intellect to draw out the fun beneath.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RPGEJY - Afflecks (formerly Affleck's Palace) is an indoor market in Manchester, England, in the city's Northern Quarter on the junction of Church Street/Tib Street and Dale Street with Oldham Street. Dozens of independent stalls, small shops and boutiques operate in the one building. The building was once home to Affleck & Brown, one of the city's principal department stores. A bar on the original site opened in 2015, under the Affleck & Brown name.
Affleck & Brown was started in the 1860s as a drapery business in Oldham Street. The store grew to occupy a whole block between Oldham Street, Church Street and Tib Street and become a full flung department store. The business had a good reputation as a credit draper and was known for a good range of cloth for home dressmaking as well as a furrier.
Affleck's Palace first opened in 1982 by James and Elaine Walsh with an ethos of offering a safe environment for entrepreneurs to start out with affordable rent and no long-term contracts. Unit holders operated under a licence agreement which allowed them to pay for space on a week by week basis. The atmosphere and colourful maze-like layout led to Affleck's becoming a mecca for alternative culture. The establishment was able to bounce back from two building fires and overcame many obstacles.
During the 1990s 'Madchester Summer of Love' period, when local bands such as the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Inspiral Carpets were at the height of their popularity, Affleck's Palace was a fashionable place to get oversized flared jeans and tie dyed T-shirts and 'Eastern Bloc' was a popular record shop as it dealt in all the latest underground dance tunes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8KEYN - Bawtry is a small market town and civil parish which lies where the western branch of the Roman Ermine Street crosses the River Idle in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England, close to the county's border with Nottinghamshire, and meets the old course of the Great North Road. Nearby towns include Gainsborough to the east, Retford to the south south-east, Worksop to the south-west and Doncaster to the north-west. Historically within the West Riding of Yorkshire, it had a population of 3,204 in the UK census of 2001, increasing to 3,573 at the 2011 Census
Bawtry is located in the metropolitan borough of Doncaster on the border with Nottinghamshire, and is situated between Bircotes and Misson at the conjunction of the A614, A631 and A638 roads. The present A638 was for centuries the Great North Road, and in the 20th century the town was a notorious bottleneck, until it was bypassed in 1965. The county boundary with Nottinghamshire runs just to the south of the town and for this reason the southernmost house on the Great North Road is named 'Number One Yorkshire'.
The town's former prosperity was based on its communications, the River Idle in the days when it was a port, the Great North Road in the coaching era, and the Great Northern Railway.
Bawtry's geographical location is 53° 25' 40 North, 1° 1' West, at an elevation of around 65 feet (20 m) above sea level.
The town is located just south of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, formerly RAF Finningley. Bawtry Hall was home to RAF No.1 Group Bomber Command during and after the Second World War, and became the Headquarters of RAF Strike Command (see RAF Bawtry). From 1989 to 2013 Bawtry Hall operated as a Christian conference centre and a base for several Christian organisations.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H4EGC9 - Warrington Bus Interchange
The building opened on 21 August 2006, next to the site of a temporary terminus that had been in use for the past thirteen months. The new interchange was built in conjunction with the extension and upgrade of the adjoining Golden Square shopping centre, and replaced the previous bus station which dated from 1979.
The interchange consists of 19 departure stands, numbered from 1 to 19, all of which employ a drive-in reverse-out layout. Each stand has a computerised information screen which also ties into the real-time information system. All stands are served from the main concourse building, which contains toilets, two coffee shops, and a combined travel and tourist information office. There is access to the shopping centre via escalators and lifts. The exits on the eastern side of the building lead onto Winwick Street, on which can be found a taxi rank and Warrington Central railway station within around 100 metres.
The bus station is the terminus for all local bus services within Warrington. Regional services operate to neighbouring cities Liverpool, Manchester and Chester, as well as to Wigan, Leigh, The Trafford Centre, Altrincham, Northwich, Runcorn, Widnes and St Helens. A small number of National Express long distance coach services operate to destinations including London, Edinburgh, Bristol, Southend-on-Sea and Southport . The majority of bus services are operated by Network Warrington, who have their own information office within the main concourse selling season tickets. Other services are provided by Arriva North West, Halton Transport, and First Greater Manchester
Centrelink
Stand 1 is the departure point for the Centrelink bus service, which operates on a circular route around the town centre via the Town Hall, Bank Quay station, Centre Park business park, the market and Central station. The service runs every 20 minutes during Monday to Friday daytimes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ETRXNC - Jenners Department Store, now known simply as Jenners, is a department store located in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was the oldest independent department store in Scotland until its acquisition by House of Fraser in 2005
Jenners has maintained its position on Edinburgh's Princes Street since 1838 when it was founded by Charles Jenner and Charles Kennington and known as Kennington & Jenner. The store was run for many years by the Douglas-Miller family, who were descendants of James Kennedy, who took charge of Jenners in 1881.
The original buildings that formed the department store were destroyed by fire in 1892, and in 1893 the Scottish architect William Hamilton Beattie was appointed to design the new store which subsequently opened in 1895.[2] This new building is designated as a category A listed building,[3] and it is noted by the statutory listing that, at Charles Jenner's insistence, the building's caryatids were intended 'to show symbolically that women are the support of the house'. The new store included many technical innovations such as electric lighting and hydraulic lifts.
Known as the Harrods of the North, it has held a Royal Warrant since 1911, and was visited by Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of its 150th anniversary in 1988.
In 2004 it changed its vision statement from its goal to be the most exciting department store outside of London to Confidently Independent. The store made national news in 2007 when it publicised that it would stop selling pate de foie gras, following a boycott by the Duke and Duchess of Hamilton

The record carries the catalogue number Stiff BUY 1A, marking it as the first official release on the Stiff Records label.
Stiff Records played a pivotal role in the development of British punk, new wave, and pub rock, launching or supporting artists including Elvis Costello, Ian Dury, The Damned, and Wreckless Eric. So It Goes is widely regarded as a foundational release of the UK punk era, blending raw energy with pop songwriting.
The distinctive blue-and-black label design and promotional slogans reflect Stiff Records' irreverent branding and DIY ethos. The image is suitable for editorial use covering music history, punk culture, record collecting, independent labels, and 1970s British popular music.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DDXJ8H - The Mound is an artificial hill in central Edinburgh, Scotland, which connects Edinburgh's New Town and Old Town. It was formed by dumping around 1,501,000 cartloads of earth excavated from the foundations of the New Town into the drained Nor Loch which forms today's Princes Street Gardens.
The construction of the Earthen Mound, as it was originally called, was begun in 1781 and it was extended over the years until by 1830 it was macadamised and landscaped so that it appeared more or less complete. When the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway was extended to Waverley in 1846, tunnels were driven under The Mound to allow access to the west. The Bank of Scotland headquarters on the Mound
Some of Edinburgh's most notable buildings and institutions have their premises on The Mound, including the National Gallery of Scotland, the Royal Scottish Academy, the spires of New College, the General Assembly Hall of the Church of Scotland, the elegant domed Headquarters of the Bank of Scotland, and its museum, Museum on the Mound.
Today The Mound is a busy, if fairly steep, thoroughfare taking traffic to and from Princes Street and the Royal Mile in the Old Town. Due to its raised elevation, the Mound commands expansive views over Princes Street and the New Town of Edinburgh and towards Calton Hill.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED1RF - There have been several town walls around Edinburgh, Scotland, since the 12th century. Some form of wall probably existed from the foundation of the royal burgh in around 1125, though the first building is recorded in the mid-15th century, when the King's Wall was constructed. In the 16th century the more extensive Flodden Wall was erected, following the Scots' defeat at the Battle of Flodden Field in 1513. This was extended by the Telfer Wall in the early 17th century. The walls had a number of gates, known as ports, the most important being the Netherbow Port, which stood halfway down the Royal Mile. This gave access from the Canongate which was, at that time, a separate burgh.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYMCM - A green neon Havana sign glows in the window of a cigar shop in Chester, creating a strong night-time or low-light retail image associated with specialist tobacconists, premium cigars and the long cultural pull of Cuban cigar branding. The photograph shows bright green illuminated lettering reflected in glass, with darker shop interior detail and faint street reflections, giving the scene a moody documentary quality suitable for editorial use about traditional retail, luxury goods, cigar culture, smoking, tobacco regulation, independent shops, heritage high streets and changing consumer habits. The visible word Havana links the display with Cuba, Cuban cigars, hand-rolled tobacco, humidors, cigar lounges, cigar accessories and the wider prestige market around imported and New World cigars. In Chester, Watergate Street is known for historic buildings, specialist shops and visitor retail, and the city has a long-established tobacconist presence through Turmeaus and La Casa del Habano, both associated with cigars and tobacco sales. The image can illustrate stories about specialist cigar merchants, luxury retail, niche consumer products, British tobacconists, high street survival, Chester shopping, tourism, night-time shop windows, neon signs and the enduring visual language of old-fashioned retail display. It also has relevance for public health and policy coverage, including smoking restrictions, tobacco duty, plain packaging, age-restricted goods, premium tobacco consumption, cigar enthusiasts and the tension between heritage retail and health campaigns. The strong green neon colour, handwritten-style lettering, glass reflections and close crop make this a useful stock image for articles about Cuban branding, cigar imports, smoking culture, shopfront design, illuminated signage, independent retail identity and the more atmospheric side of historic city-centre shopping streets in North West England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM9AWB - Pie and mash is a traditional working-class food, originating in the East End of London. Pie, mash and eel shops have been in London since the 19th century, and are still common in East and South London and in many parts of Kent and Essex. The shops may serve stewed or jellied eels.
During the Victorian era, industrial air pollution tended to be worse in the east and south east of London because of the prevailing westerly wind, with the result that the East End was settled more by the working classes, while the western part of the city was home to higher social classes. The working class were poor and favoured foodstuffs that were cheap, in plentiful supply and easy to prepare.
The savoury pie had long been a traditional food, and its small handsized form also made it a transportable meal, protected from dirt by its cold pastry crust, and filled with cheap minced meat, usually mutton. Adding cheap mashed potatoes, together with a sauce made with fish stock and parsley, made it a plate-based sit-down meal.
Jellied eels are often associated with pie and mash, as European eels cooked in gelatine also became a common worker's meal since eels were one of the few forms of fish that could survive in the heavily polluted River Thames and London's other rivers at that time. Supply was plentiful through the late 1800s, particularly from the Dutch fishing boats landing catches at Billingsgate Fish Market.
Since 2010, as revealed in a joint study by the Zoological Society of London and the Environment Agency, the number of eels captured in research traps in the River Thames fell from 1,500 in 2005 to 50 in 2010, meaning most eels used in pie and mash shops are now from the Netherlands and Northern Ireland.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BGRC6R - Warrington's Own Buses is a municipal bus company which operates a network of services within the Borough of Warrington and the surrounding area, including Altrincham, Leigh, Earlestown, Wigan, Halton and Northwich.
The company previously traded as Warrington Borough Transport up until 2006 and as Network Warrington between 2006 and 2018.
Warrington was designated as a new town in 1968, which led to new housing estates planned in the Birchwood and Westbrook areas of town. As such, Warrington Borough Council Transport Department started operating new services to these new developments as they started to grow in the 1970s and beyond. The department also began operating new services jointly with Crosville upon the split of the old Stockport based North Western Road Car Company in 1972.
To comply with the Transport Act 1985, Warrington Borough Transport was incorporated in 1986. The company's mission was that if money could be made by operating services deemed uneconomic by other operators, then it should assume operation. This policy led to an increase in services operated as other bus companies who ran into the area decided to concentrate on their own core areas.
Throughout the mid-late 2000s, Warrington Borough Transport made several cuts to their longer distance services as part of preparations for their eventual rebrand. In 2006, the company was rebranded and became known as Network Warrington, with a new livery designed by Samantha Beeley. However, this did lead to a streamlining of other routes, both long distance and in the town centre, which were operated with increased frequencies to shorten journey times.
Budget cuts by Warrington Borough Council resulted in the network of Sunday evening services being completely withdrawn from 27 June 2010, as these socially necessary services no longer receive any subsidy from the council. The company continues to operate a service during daytime shopping hours on a commercial basis.
In April 2018, the company was r

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4393219878 - 'This is the Horace and Eva Banner stained glass window in Grappenhall Methodist Church, on the A50 Knutsford Road, Grappenhall, Cheshire.
They were UFM missionaries to the indians of Brazil. Horace lived from 1906 - 1974 and Eva from 1921 - 1998.
The window depicts Smoke Falls, the location of the Kayapo Mission Station, established by Horace Banner. The falls, on the Xingu are 1000 miles up river from its confluence with the Amazon. Eva and Horace were reputed to be the first white couple ever to see Smoke Falls. With children Jessie Mae and James, they lived in a Kayapo village and ministered to the tribe.
The brass inscription at the side of the window names 'Horace Banner as a missionary to the Tembe and Urubu from 1928 and a pioneer missionary to the Kayapo tribe 1936 - 1972. Eva his wife worked with him amongst the Kayapo at Smoke Falls (1947-1972) and undertook further ministry in Brazil 1975 &
1979. May their example inspire us in our witness for Jesus Christ'.
The window is on the south side of the church, which apart from this is in quite a plain style. Wording on the window is 'Go ye therefore and teach all nations. I am with you always even until the end of the world'. (a version of Matthew 28:20 from the bible).
Below is a more elaborate extract from the Grappenhall IM history:
When Horace first arrived in this part of Brazil, he and William Johnson went in search of three missing missionaries who had not been heard of for several months. Those three missionaries are still known to this day as the ‘Three Freds' : Fred Roberts, Fred Wright and Fred Dawson.
The three Freds had gone to work amongst the Kayapo and had travelled up the Xingo and then it’s tributary, the Rio Zinho. The Kayapo’s only contact with civilisation was through the savage attacks they carried out on the homes of Brazilian settlers often killing the men and carrying off the women back into the rain forest.
It was an 800 mile journey by boat and motor transport before Horace and William reached the edge of hostile Indian territory. They then made two attempts with the assistance of armed guards to follow the route up the Rio Zinho taken by the three Freds. Eventually they penetrated 200 miles into Indian territory to stand below the waterfall known as Smoke Falls to find the sunken motor boat and the clothing remains belonging to the three Freds.
Horace’s party had travelled along the Rio Zinho knowing that they could be ambushed by the Indians at any time. On their return journey to safety, Horace recorded that he had turned to the second chapter of the book of Ezekial and read:-
“and thou, son of man, be not afraid of them…..be not afraid of their words, nor dismayed at their looks……Thou shalt speak my words unto them.”
Words of scripture that Horace would follow and lead to forty years of ministry to the Kayapo Indians.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P307AH - Altrincham Market is shown busy with shoppers, flower stalls and independent traders in the regenerated market quarter of Altrincham, Trafford, Greater Manchester. The image shows the open market area beside the timber-framed covered structure, with potted plants, bouquets, gazebos, luggage and retail stalls set out across the paved public space. People browse and chat in a relaxed town-centre setting under a cloudy early-season sky, giving the photograph a strong everyday documentary feel. Altrincham has long market-town roots, with its market charter dating back to 1290, but the modern revival of the Market House and surrounding streets has made it a widely cited example of successful high-street regeneration in North West England. The scene is useful for editorial coverage of retail revival, town centre renewal, local authority regeneration, independent food halls, markets, small businesses, place-making, public realm investment, hospitality-led footfall and the reinvention of traditional shopping streets. It also works for comparisons with destination food markets such as Borough Market in Southwark, while retaining a distinct Greater Manchester character: smaller scale, suburban, mixed retail and strongly linked to local community life. The timber canopy, brick buildings, white tents and outdoor flower displays show a market environment that blends heritage, leisure, food, drink, shopping and social activity rather than relying only on conventional chain retail. Altrincham Market has been associated with the town's wider comeback, drawing visitors, raising footfall and supporting cafés, bars, restaurants and specialist traders. This photograph can illustrate debates about changing town centres, the decline of old retail models, the value of markets as anchors, council regeneration, independent enterprise, sustainable local shopping, visitor economy, Trafford prosperity and the appeal of public spaces where people can shop, eat, meet and linger.

Irish: Institiúid Scannánaíochta na hÉireann, Institiúid Scannán na hÉireann), formerly the Irish Film Centre, is both an arthouse cinema and a national body that supports Irish film heritage. The IFI presents film festivals, retrospectives and curated seasons, along with independent, Irish and foreign language films overlooked by commercial multiplexes at its cinemas in the Temple Bar quarter of Dublin. It maintains an archive of Irish films and provides education in film culture.
The IFI increases the range of films available to Irish audiences. New releases, national seasons, directors' retrospectives, thematic programmes, festivals, and special events have been regular features of the programme. Every year, the IFI rewards its audiences by hosting an Open Day, with free cinema screenings and tours. In 2011, the IFI was awarded Dublin's Best Cinema in Dublin Living Awards. In its first two decades the IFI saw over 3.1 million cinema attendances to see 63,000 screenings of over 5,900 different films. The IFI Café Bar served over 1.78 million cups of tea and coffee to audiences that include over 8,000 members. The IFI Irish Film Archive contains 611 different collections with over 26,000 cans of films, the oldest of which, a Lumiere brothers film of Dublin and Belfast, dates back to 1897

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AE0287 - The Brick Lane Bookshop Short Story Prize - more at https://bricklanebookshop.org/history/
Our Short Story Prize was launched in 2019. Our aim is to celebrate short stories, to give new writers the chance to be published, and to offer some financial assistance to write. Each year we publish an anthology of the twelve longlisted stories. We're on the lookout for new, exciting, and diverse voices
Brick Lane Bookshop was originally part of The Tower Hamlets Arts Project (THAP), which was formed in the 1970s out of a protest.
In 1974, Thames Television launched the Eyesights' scheme. With money channelled through the Great London Arts Association, the idea was that professional artists would be commissioned to create giant posters for display in the borough with over half the amount being earmarked for the hire of hoardings alone.
The Eyesights' scheme was inevitably renamed Eyesore' by local people already involved in arts and community activities who thought that the money could be put to much better use. A crowded public meeting in February 1975 called for an alternative, bolder plan, bringing together existing and fledgling arts activities under a coordinating body to be called the Tower Hamlets Arts Project (THAP).
Rather than it being about artists coming into the area, it should be about those already here! And after some initial eye-rolling, Thames Television eventually saw the sense of the argument. The Borough Council assisted by appointing an Arts Officer, Phil Shepherd, to support the new scheme. THAP was launched at the start of 1976 and celebrated its achievements a year later with a month-long Big Show' at the Whitechapel Art Gallery. Critics were bemused at finding this international venue, which had presented the works of Picasso and Frida Kahlo, awash with East End poets, Stepney filmmakers, amateur rock bands, truanting schoolkids, improvised theatre shows and messy experiments in silkscreen printing.
