In the United States and Canada these are known as row houses or row homes, commonly found in older cities such as Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Toronto.
Terrace housing can be found worldwide, though it is quite common in Europe and Latin America, and many examples can be found in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and Australia.
Since the Second World War, housing redevelopment has led to many outdated or dilapidated terraces being cleared to make room for tower blocks, which occupy a much smaller area of land. Because of this land use in the inner city areas could in theory have been used to create greater accessibility, employment or recreational or leisure centres. However, sub-optimal or flawed implementation has meant that in many areas (like Manchester or the London estates) the tower blocks offered no real improvement for rehoused residents over their prior terraced houses.
In 2005 the English Heritage report Low Demand Housing and the Historic Environment found that repairing a standard Victorian terraced house over 30 years is around 60% cheaper than building and maintaining a newly built house. In a 2003 survey for Heritage Counts a team of experts contrasted a Victorian terrace with a house built after 1980, and found that:
The research demonstrated that, contrary to earlier thinking, older housing actually costs less to maintain and occupy over the long-term life of the dwelling than more modern housing. Largely due to the quality and life-span of the materials used, the Victorian terraced house proved almost ?1,000 per 100 m2 cheaper to maintain and inhabit on average each year

Modelled after the spacious, light, mahogany-trimmed taverns being promoted by the beer industry, the late Victorian coffee house was a conscious attempt by naive social workers to lure the working men from their pubs and the perils of demon drink. Coffee taverns, one pamphlet stated, must show there are beverages as comforting as beer, that there are beverages to be bought as cheap as beer. And they must provide advantages not provided by such a formidable enemy and by this manoeuvre make victory certain. Accordingly, working-men were encouraged to bring their own food to be cooked free of charge in the tavern's kitchen. Newspapers and games were laid out - also gratis - and customers were encouraged to remain as long as they wanted. Needless to say, none of these coffee taverns survived long on their own.

Amazon fulfillment centers are large facilities with hundreds of employees, sometimes thousands. Employees are responsible for five basic tasks: unpacking and inspecting incoming goods
placing goods in storage and recording their location
picking goods from their computer recorded locations to make up an individual shipment
sorting and packing orders
and shipping. A computer that records the location of goods and maps out routes for pickers plays a key role: employees carry hand-held computers which communicate with the central computer and monitor their rate of progress. A picker may walk 10 or more miles a day.
In newer fulfillment centers, items are stored on pods and brought to pickers by robots (Amazon Robotics). In the United Kingdom, initial staffing was provided by Randstad Holding and other temporary employment agencies. In the United States, many workers are hired as Amazon employees and granted shares of stock or sign-on bonuses, while others are offered temporary seasonal positions. When we have permanent positions available, we look to the top-performing temporary associates to fill them, said an Amazon spokesperson. Amazon acquired Kiva Systems, a warehouse automation company, in 2012.
Amazon fulfillment centers can also provide warehousing and order-fulfillment for third-party sellers, for an extra fee. Third-party sellers can use Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) to ship for other platforms as well, such as eBay or their own websites

Warrington Borough Councils plan includes removing large areas of Greenbelt Land all over the Borough for housing developments and business parks.

Appleton, Appleton Thorn, Stretton, Grappenhall, Thelwall, Lymm, Croft and Culcheth for housing developments. New roads will be punched through existing areas to access the new housing estates, for example through Grappenhall Sports Club across the Bridgewater Canal, affecting Stockton Heath and Stockton Lane. Another road is planned across fields at the back of Stretton towards the M56.
These areas are all currently green fields, sports fields and wildlife habitats.
All of these areas have new housing stock built in the last 10 years, surely enough Greenbelt has been lost already. Heptonstall was the site of a battle during the early part of the English Civil War in 1643.
Historically a centre for hand-loom weaving, Heptonstall's cottages and terraced houses are characterised by large first-floor windows to maximise the light for weaving
In the mid-1980s the paving on a road through Heptonstall was removed, revealing the original stone setts. Although there was a plan to remove the setts, local protests convinced the council to restore them. At the same time the existing concrete street lights were replaced with late 19th-century cast-iron gas lamps. Both developments acted as a traffic calming measure.

It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde of Rhein-Nahe, whose seat is in Bingen am Rhein, although that town is not within its bounds.
The original name Baccaracus suggests a Celtic origin. Above the town stands Stahleck Castle (Burg Stahleck), now a youth hostel.

The town lies in the Rhine Gorge, 48 km south of Koblenz.
Constituent communities
Bacharach is divided into several Ortsteile. The outlying centre of Steeg lies in the Steeg Valley (Steeger Tal) off to the side, away from the Rhine. This glen lies between Medenscheid and Neurath to the south and Henschhausen to the north on the heights.
History
In the early 11th century, Bacharach had its first documentary mention. It may have been that as early as the 7th century, the kingly domain passed into Archbishop of Cologne Kunibert's ownership
pointing to this is a Kunibertskapelle (chapel) on the spot where now stands the Wernerkapelle. The V??gte of the Cologne estate were the Elector of the Palatinate, who over time pushed back Cologne's influence.
Caring for and maintaining Bacharach's building monuments, spurred on in the early 20th century by the Rhenish Association for Monument Care and Landscape Preservation (Rheinischer Verein f?r Denkmalpflege und Landschaftsschutz) which took on the then highly endangered town wall and Stahleck Castle ruin jobs, and the great dedication of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate to the Wernerkapelle have seen to it that Bacharach is still a jewel of the Rheinromantik and a multifaceted documentary site of mediaeval architecture on the Middle Rhine. The Wernerkapelle ruin is under monumental protection and before it a plaque has been placed recalling the inhuman crimes against Jewish residents and also containing a quotation from a prayer by Pope John XXIII for a change in Christians' thinking in their relationship

handmade brick in English garden wall bond (3+1), with ashlar
plinth and dressings, slate roof. Probably double-depth plan,
all single-fronted.
Now 3 storeys but probably formerly 2 storeys, a 5-window
range. Offset left of centre are 2 doorways, that on the left
square-headed, with C18 rusticated and keyed wedge lintel,
the other round-headed with set-in architrave including
consoles to moulded lintel and small keystone. Left of these
doorways is a simple shop front framed by fluted pilasters
right of it are 2 shop windows, the 1st with plain surround
and the 2nd (incorporating a door) with sunk panel pilasters
and prominent cornice. At 1st floor are 5 windows with raised
sills and rusticated and keyed lintels. 2nd floor, of later
C19 brick has segmental-headed sashes with gauged red brick
heads. Most openings boarded at time of survey.
INTERIOR not accessible.
HISTORY: interesting example of Georgian town houses built in
narrow wiend, probably in earliest phase of domestic building
on rear of ancient burgage plots. In poor condition at time of
survey (1992). Forms group with Nos 4-14 opposite (qv).

The original village of Gamesley consisted of rows of cottages inhabited by workers at the local textile mills, and it remained largely undeveloped until the 1960s, when it underwent considerable change. It was chosen as the location of an overspill estate, built by Manchester City Council. This was in order to rehouse people from decaying inner city areas of Manchester. These housing areas were also built in other towns surrounding Manchester, such as nearby Hattersley on the outskirts of Hyde.
The Gamesley estate was built in 2 half's. The first houses were built by contractors Finnegans which were constructed with
flat felted roofs, pebble dash cladding ground floors and tile cladded first floors. Finnegans houses were equipped with warm air central heating which used gas as an energy source. The Finnegan side of the estate was known locally as the ?gas side'. In the late 1980s the local authority renovated the Finnegan system built houses, the works included re-enveloping the external building with traditional bricks and mortar. The works also added apex roofing complete with roofing tiles.
The second half of the Gamesley estate was built a couple of years later by George Wimpey using the Wimpey no-fines house building method. The houses were constructed with full pebble dash finish and tiled apex roofing. The houses built by George Wimpey had a solid concrete ground floor which had electrical underfloor heating installed, the first floors of these houses were built with no heating. Due to electricity being the main energy source for heating, the George Wimpey side of Gamesley became known locally as the ?electric side'.

These housing areas were also built in other towns surrounding Manchester, such as nearby Hattersley on the outskirts of Hyde.
The Gamesley estate was built in 2 half's. The first houses were built by contractors Finnegans which were constructed with
flat felted roofs, pebble dash cladding ground floors and tile cladded first floors. Finnegans houses were equipped with warm air central heating which used gas as an energy source. The Finnegan side of the estate was known locally as the ?gas side'. In the late 1980s the local authority renovated the Finnegan system built houses, the works included re-enveloping the external building with traditional bricks and mortar. The works also added apex roofing complete with roofing tiles.
The second half of the Gamesley estate was built a couple of years later by George Wimpey using the Wimpey no-fines house building method. The houses were constructed with full pebble dash finish and tiled apex roofing. The houses built by George Wimpey had a solid concrete ground floor which had electrical underfloor heating installed, the first floors of these houses were built with no heating. Due to electricity being the main energy source for heating, the George Wimpey side of Gamesley became known locally as the ?electric side'.

In the 1950s the company was still producing footwear soling, but with the market becoming more and more competitive it started concentrating its efforts into cellular rubbers which it had earlier pioneered. It went on to produce produced rubbers for the aviation industry, oil, automobile, domestic and communications industries.

Now all of the site to the west of Milltown has gone leaving a smaller three-storey mill to east of Milltown and some of the perimeter buildings, including former weaving sheds and administrative buildings, around the former drying sheds still standing.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1RDF6 - Salford archaeology within the Centre for Applied Archaeology at the University of Salford, was commissioned by Glossop Land Ltd to carry out a programme of archaeological works in advance of the development of the Woods Mill complex, Glossop, Derbyshire. The proposed works included the demolition of a cotton mill that was part of the 19th century Howard Town Mills Complex and the redevelopment of the site for residential, retail and office use.
The site was occupied from 1803 by a water-powered cotton mill, which was destroyed by fire in 1842. The mill was subsequently purchased for use by John Wood, who redeveloped the site as the Howard Town Mills. The complex was slowly expanded eastwards until, at its height, it was employing 8000 people and was the largest integrated cotton spinning and weaving complex in Derbyshire. After John Wood died in 1854, the mill entered a slow decline until it was sold off in 1919. Although the western half continued in use as a cotton mill, the eastern half was taken over by Volcrepe Rubber in 1932, who continued to operate on the site until 2002.
This archive contains the results of the archaeological investigations undertaken by Salford Archaeology within the Woods Mill complex. This includes a level III building survey of the Narrow Spinning Mill and a report of the survey and excavation results, amalgamated into a single narrative that presents the archaeological evidence for the development of this important mill complex.

Before opening the bank, Joseph Parr had made his wealth in the sugar refining industry that supported the slave trade in the British West Indies. Parr's bank amalgamated through acquisitions into the NatWest.
Unusually, Parr included both a pleasure garden and a kitchen garden within the same boundary wall. In addition to enjoying their garden, the Parr family held frequent galas and special events for the community. One annual event called Beating the Bounds involved a walk around the boundaries of the townships of Lymm, Appleton, and Grappenhall, which included the garden. Historical records suggest that the estate was at its height from 1875 to 1899.
By the 1950s, the estate had become derelict and parts of it were sold off. The house was demolished in the 1970s and the garden passed to English Partnerships for renovation. In 2005 control of the garden passed to Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council, which continued restoration in conjunction with a community group called The Friends of Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden. In 2012 the garden was given a Heritage Lottery Fund award towards repair of the Victorian glasshouses and completion of the restoration

On the 11.2.2016, a delegation representing the BMA (UK) visited the site of 28 Dean Street, situated in the Soho area of West London ? which is a five minute walk from Gerrard Street (in the heart of London's Chinatown), and a one minute walk from Soho Square Gardens. Karl Marx and his family lived in two houses on Dean Street ? firstly number 64 and then number 28. The room the Marx family occupied at 64 Dean Street is generally described as small ? being no bigger than a closet or store cupboard. By the time Marx moved into 28 Dean Street ? his family comprised of himself, his wife Jenny (who was pregnant), his housekeeper Lenchen, and their three children (Jennychen, Laura and Edgar). Their youngest son ? Henry ?Guido' Marx ? died in November 1850 whilst the family were still living at 64 Dean Street. The Marx family rented only a small area of 28 Dean Street consisting initially of just two rooms (Marx would later rent a third room for use as his study). In his Karl Marx ? A Biography (1995) the historian David McLellan describes the two rooms as being situated on the second floor of the building and comprising of a back small bedroom and a larger front room (measuring 15ft by 18ft) that had three windows looking out onto the street. He further states that the Marx family lived in this house from 1851 to 1856 (Page 240), but on photograph number 8 in his book (situated between pages 178 and 179) he states that the date of occupation was in fact between 1850 and 1856. Indeed, the plaque raised by the now defunct Greater London Council (GLC) is affixed between two windows on the second floor of the building and quotes the dates of occupation as ?1851-1856' ? a date that McLellan states is ?not quite accurate' on his description of the photograph of 28 Dean Street.

Crews were called on Thursday morning after reports of a fire in the first floor of the Black Bear pub in Knutsford Road.
Although there was thick smoke, firefighters wore breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze.
But there was little damage caused to the building other than a blackening from the smoke.

The Jolly Angler is to close after Christmas 2020. This place defined the hidden away pub, lost in the streets between Piccadilly Station and Great Ancoats Street. Now it's been sold.
It's a proper old Ancoats pub that would have, once upon a time, been on a street of terraced houses amidst workshops. It's a cute place, just a couple of rooms, with a bit of architectural fancy in its Ducie Street lower fa??ade. The opening times have been as hidden away as its location, lost somewhere between Monday and Saturday. It often seemed potluck to find it open.
It's right to be sentimental about the loss of old pubs
Yet when it has been open, it's been a great experience
friendly, a laugh and with a real fire too. There have been occasional folk nights - often with a definite Irish accent. It's always very jolly although I can't remember many anglers being in, not that I asked.
The owners were one of the big Greater Manchester four trad brewers, Hydes (with the others being Robinsons, Holt and the oldest of all, Lees.) We've asked Hydes for an interview and are awaiting a response but this site and the older, often it must be said, hideous surrounding buildings, have been surrounded by Manchester city centre's expansion.
This area is ripe for development and thus the site of the Jolly Angler and those around have been plucked. Whether this is Hydes cashing in we'll have to wait and see when they come back to us. Maybe it's anything but, but we'd like to know.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2DD8H58 - The Smallest House in Great Britain (Welsh: Y T Lleiaf ym Mhrydain Fawr), also known as the Quay House, is a tourist attraction on the quay in Conwy, Wales. It is reputed to be smallest house in the United Kingdom.
The minuscule home was created in the 16th century and remained in use until 1900, when the tenant was a 6-foot-3-inch (1.91 m) fisherman named Robert Jones. The rooms were too small for him to stand up in fully and he was eventually forced to move out when the council declared the house unfit for human habitation, along with a number of properties. The house is still owned by his descendants, having been passed to female relatives since Robert's sons showed a lack of interest in the business.
After some persuasion by the then editor of the North Wales Weekly News, Roger Dawson (the owner) and the editor toured the United Kingdom in order to declare the house The Smallest House in Great Britain, a status that was later confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records.
The house has a floor area of 3.05 by 1.8 metres (10.0 by 5.9 ft) and is painted red. It stands near the Conwy Castle walls. The ground floor is devoted to the living area with room for coal and an open fire, and a water tap tucked behind the stairs. The upstairs holds the cramped bedroom, which also comes with a small niche for storage.

Warrington Borough Council's Local Plan will see 18,900 homes built by 2037, including 7,064 on green belt land.
The Labour-run council's leader Russ Bowden said building in rural areas was an absolute last resort.
Campaigner Helen Gurnani, who protested outside the meeting, said there was a need to preserve the land for public health and environmental reasons.
The authority was forced to draw up a new plan in 2017 after its last one was overturned by a legal challenge, and the new proposals saw the target for green belt land cut back.
The proposals were approved by the council, despite opposition from Liberal Democrats and Conservatives.
Six Labour councillors, who represent areas near Peel Hall - where 1,200 homes are proposed despite a government inspector's ruling last year that the site was unsuitable for housing - abstained from voting.
The wider plan will also see a number of large builds on both green belt and brownfield land, including 5,000 homes in a new garden suburb near the M6 Lymm interchange at Appleton, 1,600 on land near the River Mersey and 1,100 around Lymm, Culcheth, Burtonwood and other villages.
Liberal Democrat Ryan Bate said the plan would make lives poorer and destroy our environment, while Ms Gurnani said she understood the need for social housing on brownfield land, but we need to preserve our green spaces for environmental and public health reasons.
The council said a consultation would now be held on the plan before it is reviewed by a government inspector.

Venture to the far (and dead) end of Short Street and you will find two striking mosaics - one in Mark's image and the other featuring lyrics from The Fall song Ten Houses of Eve, framed by the brickwork of the far wall of the Affleck's building.
The artworks have been commissioned by renowned mosaic artist Mark Kennedy, and were created by artist Mary Goodwin.
Kennedy had been friends with Smith for 15 years, and hopes to add to artworks in the secluded end of Short Street as an ongoing tribute to Smith and The Fall.
He says: I want to call this Fall corner, and over the years I'd like to add little bits every time there's a celebratory element to the group.

New development not that far from me, from Barratt Homes, Appleton Grange, eating up a bit more green belt. Personally, I can live with that if the appropriate infrastructure (roads, schools etc) are arranged to support it and a mix of tenures (including some affordable (small a) help locals, especially young ones to get on the housing ladder, if they want to.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8DCT4 - The William Nuttall Cottage Homes are a good example of a planned development by a charitable benefactor, the sweet manufacturer William Nuttall. He set up a trust to provide 'cottage homes for aged spinsters' and the William Nuttall Trust purchased land in Bennetthorpe from the council on which to build these homes. The almshouses were erected in 1930, until then the area between Bennetthorpe and the racecourse had been relatively undeveloped.
The cottage homes were laid out in the pattern of traditional almshouses of standard size set in communal grounds. The buildings comprise a symmetrical group of 24 two storey homes at the centre of which is a linked terrace of eight dwellings around a central archway. To each side are four pairs of homes, each advancing forwards. The buildings are of red engineering brick with stone and concrete dressings and have either 'Rosemary' plain clay tile or Westmoreland slate roofs. The buildings are not identical but have common features and display typical detailing and materials of the inter-war period. The whole site was bounded by a low brick wall with a central vehicular access and symmetrical pedestrian side access.
The William Nuttall Cottage Homes development remains relatively unchanged and continues to have the use for which it was originally intended. Within the conservation area there are no listed structures but all the buildings are considered to be key unlisted buildings.

It is the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments. The building faces Albert Square to the north, featuring the Albert Memorial and St Peter's Square to the south, home to The Cenotaph.
Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse, the town hall was completed in 1877. The building contains offices and grand ceremonial rooms such as the Great Hall which is decorated with Ford Madox Brown's imposing Manchester Murals illustrating the history of the city. This is largely due to such practitioners as Steve Chappell, Jack Sobon, and Tedd Benson, who studied old plans and techniques and revived a long-neglected technique. Once a handcrafted skill passed down, timber-frame construction has now been modernized with the help of modern industrial tools such as the CNC machines. These machines and mass-production techniques have assisted growth and made for more affordable frames and shorter lead-times for projects.
Timber-framed structures differ from conventional wood-framed buildings in several ways. Timber framing uses fewer, larger wooden members, commonly timbers in the range of 15 to 30 cm (6 to 12), while common wood framing uses many more timbers with dimensions usually in the 5 to 25 cm (2 to 10) range. The methods of fastening the frame members also differ. In conventional framing, the members are joined using nails or other mechanical fasteners, whereas timber framing uses the traditional mortice and tenon or more complex joints that are usually fastened using only wooden pegs.[13] Modern complex structures and timber trusses often incorporate steel joinery such as gusset plates, for both structural and architectural purposes.
Recently, it has become common practice to enclose the timber structure entirely in manufactured panels such as SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels). Although the timbers can only be seen from inside the building when so enclosed, construction is less complex and insulation is greater than in traditional timber building.

On the edge of Chat Moss, in an area once full of collieries, lies the picturesque village of Astley Green. In the heart of the village stands Astley Green Colliery Museum which, but for the foresight of Lancashire County Council and several leading figures within the community, would have suffered the same fate as the other collieries in the area, total demolition. It was the uniqueness of the 3,300 hp twin tandem compound steam winding engine that brought the demolition to a halt. As the result of the intervention, the museum houses Lancashire's only surviving headgear and engine house, both of which now have listed building status.
The museum occupies some fifteen acres of the Astley Green Colliery site. To the south lies the Bridgewater Canal and Astley Moss, an important mossland site. The low-lying landscape ensures that the museum's 98ft high lattice steel headgear can be seen for many miles, a fitting memorial to days now past.
Apart from the steam winding engine and headgear the museum houses many exhibits, not least of which is the collection of 28 colliery locomotives, the largest collection of its type in the United Kingdom.
The colliery began its life in 1908 to exploit coal reserves in the south Lancashire Coalfield. Had it not been for the increasing demand for coal, at that time, the project would not have been viable. The coal seams at Astley Green are very deep and overlain by 100 feet of wet and unstable ground. These factors made the sinking of the shaft a very expensive proposition. The novelty of many of the requirements tested the ingenuity of the engineers during the construction, so much so that a paper, on the sinking of the shaft, was presented to the Institute of Mining Engineers. The colliery had a lifespan of only 62 years, finally closing its gates in 1970.

Manchester Town Hall is a Victorian-era, Neo-gothic municipal building in Manchester, England. The building functions as the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments.
Designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse the town hall was completed in 1877. The building occupies a triangular site facing Albert Square and contains offices and grand ceremonial rooms such as the Great Hall which is decorated with the imposing Manchester Murals by Ford Madox Brown illustrating the history of the city. The entrance and Sculpture Hall contain busts and statues of influential figures including Dalton, Joule and Barbirolli. The exterior is dominated by the clock tower which rises to 87 metres (285 feet) and houses Great Abel, the clock bell.
In 1938, a detached Town Hall Extension was completed and is connected by two covered bridges over Lloyd Street. The town hall, which was granted Grade I listed building status on 25 February 1952[6] is regarded as one of the finest interpretations of neogothic architecture in the United Kingdom

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF23TD - Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire, England, is one of the best preserved textile mills of the Industrial Revolution and is now a museum of the cotton industry. It is a Grade II listed building and is now in the care of the National Trust.
The mill was founded by Samuel Greg (who is represented here), in 1784 in the village of Styal on the River Bollin. Its original iron water wheel was designed by Thomas Hewes and built between 1816 and 1820.
The Hewes wheel finally broke in 1904. After that the River Bollin continued to power the mill, through two water turbines. Today the Mill is home to the most powerful working waterwheel in Europe, an iron water wheel which was originally at Glasshouses Mill at Patley Bridge. This wheel was designed by Sir William Fairbairn, the Scottish engineer who had been an apprentice of Thomas Hewes.
The estate surrounding the mill, also developed by Greg, is the most complete and least altered factory colony of the Industrial Revolution. The estate and mill were donated to the National Trust in 1939 by Alexander Carlton Greg and are open to the public. The mill continued in commercial production until 1959.
The Greg family were Unitarians and built Norcliffe Chapel in Styal village. Their non-conformist religious beliefs provided the Gregs with important business contacts as many of the major Manchester Industrialists were Unitarian. Methodist workers at the mill later sought a place of worship, and the Gregs converted a grain store in Styal village into a Chapel for their use.
In Britain, a cotton mill is a factory that houses spinning and weaving machinery. Typically built between 1775 and 1930, mills spun cotton which was an important product during the Industrial Revolution.
Cotton mills, and the mechanisation of the spinning process, were instrumental in the growth of the machine tool industry, enabling the construction of larger cotton mills. The requirement for water helped stimulate the construction of the canal system too.

It has its origins across the road from where it now stands back in 1826. It was known then for its Oysters, one of the rare foods I have given up trying to enjoy, they are just not for me. Local architect Robert Paterson is responsible for its parisian style and its a great step back to victorian gin palace times, a bit like the Phil in Liverpool ( www.flickr.com/photos/hotpixuk/3804831303/ ).
On the menu today was a lovely tomato based fish soup, Moules (Mussels to you), mixed starters to share, pork in cider, although the homemade sandwiches and burgers in there are also really nice. i had the fish soup followed by a really good Cranachan (a local Scots desert with double cream, oats and raspberries), try it if you get the chance, naughty but nice!

Albert Dock is a complex of dock buildings and warehouses in Liverpool, England. Designed by Jesse Hartley and Philip Hardwick, it was opened in 1846, and was the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone, with no structural wood. As a result, it was the first non-combustible warehouse system in the world.
At the time of its construction the Albert Dock was considered a revolutionary docking system because ships were loaded and unloaded directly from/to the warehouses. Two years after it opened it was modified to feature the world's first hydraulic cranes. Due to its open yet secure design, the Albert Dock became a popular store for valuable cargoes such as brandy, cotton, tea, silk, tobacco, ivory and sugar. However, despite the Albert Dock's advanced design, the rapid development of shipping technology meant that within 50 years, larger, more open docks were required, although it remained a valuable store for cargo.
During the Second World War, the Albert Dock was requisitioned by the Admiralty serving as a base for boats of the British Atlantic Fleet. The complex was damaged during air raids on Liverpool, notably during the May Blitz of 1941. In the aftermath of the war, the financial problems of the owners and the general decline of docking in the city meant that the future of the Albert Dock was uncertain. Numerous plans were developed for the re-use of the buildings but none came to fruition and in 1972 the dock was finally closed. Having lain derelict for nearly ten years, the redevelopment of the dock began in 1981, when the Merseyside Development Corporation was set up, with the Albert Dock being officially re-opened in 1988.

Delightfully tucked away off Princes Street and away from the rowdy bars of Rose Street. My default choice in there is Weihenstephan - '\u00e4lteste Brauerei der Welt' (lierally Dedicating Stefan - oldest brewery of the world), which is a lovely pint, in its own special tall glass. A plaque outside details its history.
The origins of the site was the Guildford Arms Hotel. This was more or less totally rteworked by Robert Macfarlane Cameron in 1898. It was modelled on the then popular victorian gin palace theme echoing the Phil in Liverpool and the Crown in Belfast among others. Most pubs were at the time male dominated and frankly dingy and possibly a little dangerous. The temperance movement is said to have encouraged the design of more luxurious pubs, particularly suitable for the fairer sex rather than just men.
The current configuration dates from 1940. However the centrepoint of the Guildford\u2019s late Victorian opulence is the magnificent Jacobean style ceiling which can be seen in this image. A row of real ale pumps on the bar all have the logo of DM Stewart, owner since victorian days.
A grand old Thorne Brothers Mirror hangs at the end of the bar. Just below the cornice height, wood panelling conceals a hidden room: legend has that this was aparently used to store spirits and other liquor which was pumped to the room from street level. A narrow walkway
leads from this room around the inner walls to the Gallery. This gallery now provides an ideal spot for diners to marvel at the superbly decorated ceiling or gaze down at the punters in the Public Bar. Both lunch and dinner are served in the Gallery Restaurant with lunch and snacks (Chilli Cashews is my weakness when in there) also served in the Lounge &
Public Bar areas. I can vouch for the excellent range of real ales. Usually a wider selection from Scotland (including the islands) than the neighbour to the south too. Readers of The Edinburgh Evening News voted the Guildford Arms Best City Bar in 1999. If you are in town and have a spare hour or so for victorian time travel, pop in!

It is a nice part of 'old London', it was the site of a flower, fruit and vegetable market from the 1500s until 1974. The wholesale market was then relocated to New Covent Garden Market in Nine Elms (not so picturesque). While Covent Garden is the only part of London licensed for street entertainment, performers have to jump through hoops, having to undertake auditions for the Market's management and representatives of the performers' union and signing up to timetabled slots.
It was nice on a quite mild March afternoon to enjoy my pint of Fullers London Pride overlooking the main piazza. This image has been turned to monochrome then selectively coloured.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4404975390 - 'The Star Inn is an interesting country pub a few miles from the town of Wantage in Oxfordshire, England. The pub is quite cosy and at the end of a narrow lane.
It is quite close to Oxfordshire's white horse at Ridgeway / Uffington Castle, An iron age hill fort covering over 30,000 sq metres, which was still in use in the Roman era. The nearby Wiltshire Three Castles Brewery make an excellent nutty 4.2% bitter called Uffington Castle and this was on at the Star and Mike is holding its pump here with his left hand.
Dawn and Mike have recently moved in and not yet seen spring or summer in the village. Theres a mixture of homecooked food and locals can pre-order and pop in with a plate to take it away if they want. Guest ales change every month from the local Hook Norton brewery and they had a well kept London Pride on there too. Note they have the Aspall traditional cider in stock too.

It is thatched with real fires and has a large garden and dining area. It is a 17th Century building situated between Ringwood and Christchurch about five miles from the famous Ringwood Brewery. It was originally a private house, and became an inn in 1725.
Sopley village was a centre of smuggling. The smugglers boats were heaved up from the River Avon to the Woolpack, where pack horses were waiting to take the goods to the New Forest and onward to the centres of Winchester and London.
The pub name probably originated because the vicar, the Rev. James Willis, was a keen sheep farmer and took a major part in distributing his Merino sheep, of which he had over a thousand throughout the district. These are a small, short-woolled breed, prized for their fine wool. As IOW Ray mentions below too, this pub sign was painted by local Sign Artist, Peter J Oldreive.

A free standing outside toilet / WC as would have been seen in the back yards of British terraced back to back housing. While tenements and closes were more prominent in Scotland, this was the typical english workers house loo.
this reminds me of my dads brother my uncle Arthur. When he moved his bathroom and toilet indoors he took pride in keeping his outdoor privy. Although it became rather proudly his white wine cellar in winter.
I once was on a health and safety course. There was a story about a man arriving to hospital with a fractured skull. When he came around apparently a toilet tank had collapsed on to him while on the toilet. Apparently he had pulled the chain and the bracket had collapsed.
When asked 'Why on earth did you do that', he replied 'Just to see what it felt like!'
...these people should get out more, life on the edge...mmmmnnn!

The evening started in Sinclairs Oyster Bar, Manchesters most moved historic pub (with the Wellington) within sight of the MEN big Wheel, for a pint of Sam Smiths (in a plastic glass??). Maybe the upper bar is opened by now.
The basement of Corbiers in Half Moon St was next followed by the Vine.
Next in the sleet followed the two chop houses (Mr Thomas's and Sams (from where this images comes).
Great Bridgewater St got us to the warm and snug Britons Protection. The evening rounded off in the Peveril of the Peak (named after a mailcoach that used to cross the Peak district over to Manchester from Luton.

Many stories of ghost's are found in the older area of Thelwall. Many of the sightings are usually from the Local Pub: 'the Little Manor'. However there has been stories of witches at the old white house with the well on the outskirts of Thelwall.

A fortified city was established at Thelwall in 923 during the reign of King Edward the Elder, which is mentioned in two very early sources, including the Anglo Saxon Chronicle:
Kynge Edwarde made a cite at Thelewall in [th]e northe parte of [th]e Marches, nye the water of Mersee, where he put a certeyne knyghtes.
A.D. 923. This year went King Edward with an army, late in the harvest, to Thelwall
and ordered the borough to be repaired, and inhabited, and manned. And he ordered another army also from the population of Mercia, the while he sat there to go to Manchester in Northumbria, to repair and to man it. This year died Archbishop Plegmund
and King Reynold won York.
Earthwork remains of a embankment, possibly part of these fortifications, has been found on the grounds of Chaigeley School. These remains are an English Heritage National Monument.

Portree (Scottish Gaelic: Port R?gh, is the largest town on Skye in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. It is the location for the only secondary school on the Island, Portree High school. Public transport services are limited to buses.

Torin (Scottish Gaelic: Na Torrain) is a settlement on the island of Skye in Scotland.
The crofting and fishing village lies on the eastern shore of Loch Slapin, 5 miles (7 km) southwest of Broadford (An t-??th Leathann), on the road to Elgol (Ealaghol). There is a mixture of Victorian white-washed cottages and modern flat-pack houses. The village boasts good views of Blaven and Loch Slapin.
Torrin sits on Durness limestone. There is an abundance of trees and varied plant flora, including more than a dozen species of orchids. Much of the area is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation.
There are five working crofts in Torrin with cattle and sheep. The common grazing extends north onto the surrounding red granite hills Beinn Dearg Mh?r (709m) and Beinn Dearg Bheag (584m) and beyond the head of Loch Slapin .

Pub games like this are the backbone of a night out and I cannot even remember if this pub had a fruit machine or a juke box music machine. This is a great little country pub doing great meals at good prices. Rabbit pie, pigeon and venison with veg, just watch out for teh lumps of leadshot!

Moseley was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Museleie, although the number 50 bus did not head out to Druids Heath as early as that.
The barometer and tower of The Fighting Cocks pub is shown with the interior and that of the Prince of Wales a little down Alcester Road towards Birmingham. At the latter you get a deer on the wall and a wide selection of real ales, that makes it my favourite choice.

'Red Frame/White Light' is the second single of the synthpop group Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. The song quite boringly is about the red telephone box in Meols that was used by the band to make calls to organise their gigs.

Over the years it has become a kind of sacred place for OMD fans. In 2004 OMD fan Stephen Cork started a successful campaign to get the telephone box repainted in time for a fan tour on April 10, 2005.

Penrhyn Castle is a country house in Llandegai, Bangor, Gwynedd, North Wales, in the form of a Norman castle. It was originally a medieval fortified manor house, founded by Ednyfed Fychan. In 1438, Ioan ap Gruffudd was granted a licence to crenellate and he founded the stone castle and added a tower house. Samuel Wyatt reconstructed the property in the 1780s.
The present building was created between 1820 and 1845 to designs by Thomas Hopper, who expanded and transformed the building beyond recognition. However a spiral staircase from the original property can still be seen, and a vaulted basement and other masonry were incorporated into the new structure. Hopper's clients were the Dawkins-Pennant family, who had made their fortune from Jamaican sugar and local slate quarries.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTD3AK - Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden is a historic walled garden in Grappenhall, Warrington, Cheshire, England. The garden was built by Thomas Parr around 1830 as both a pleasure garden for relaxing strolls and as a kitchen garden to produce fruit, vegetables, and herbs. After a period of decline, the garden was restored first by English Partnerships and then by the local parish council in conjunction with the friends of the garden
The walled garden was built around 1830 by Warrington banker Thomas Parr to accompany a mansion house. Thomas Parr's father, Joseph Parr, founded Parr's Bank and Thomas was appointed Chairman of the bank. Before opening the bank, Joseph Parr had made his wealth in the sugar refining industry that supported the slave trade in the British West Indies. Parr's bank amalgamated through acquisitions into the NatWest.
Unusually, Parr included both a pleasure garden and a kitchen garden within the same boundary wall. In addition to enjoying their garden, the Parr family held frequent galas and special events for the community. One annual event called Beating the Bounds involved a walk around the boundaries of the townships of Lymm, Appleton, and Grappenhall, which included the garden. Historical records suggest that the estate was at its height from 1875 to 1899.
By the 1950s, the estate had become derelict and parts of it were sold off. The house was demolished in the 1970s and the garden passed to English Partnerships for renovation. In 2005 control of the garden passed to Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council, which continued restoration in conjunction with a community group called The Friends of Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden. In 2012 the garden was given a Heritage Lottery Fund award towards repair of the Victorian glasshouses and completion of the restoration

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy ED4MNA - Greyfriars Bobby's Bar occupies the ground floor of a row of Georgian houses adjoining the historic Candlemakers' Hall, built in 1722.
The name of the bar is inspired by an Edinburgh legend of a scruffy Skye terrier called Bobby. When his owner died in 1858, Bobby faithfully watched over his grave and was buried alongside his master in the Greyfriars Kirkyard in 1872.
