Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG8YTA - Hale is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Halton, Cheshire, England with a population of 1,800. The village is north of the River Mersey, and just to the east of the boundary with Merseyside. It is 2+1?2 miles east of Speke in Liverpool, and 4 miles south-west of Widnes. The nearby village of Halebank is to the north-east.
Historically part of Lancashire, until 1 April 1974 the area formed part of the Whiston Rural District.
The population of the parish is stable with a population of 1,898 (2001 census), 1,841 (2011 census) and 1,800 (2021 census).
John Middleton (1578?1623), the Childe of Hale, was reputed to be nine feet, three inches tall, or 2.8 m. His cottage and grave are located in the village. Just outside St Mary's Church was a wooden carving of the Childe Of Hale that is said to have been life-sized. It was replaced in 2013 by a 3-metre bronze statue by sculptor Diane Gorvin
Middleton was born in the village of Hale, near Liverpool. According to contemporary accounts and his epitaph, he grew to the height of 9 feet 3 inches (2.82 m) and slept with his feet hanging out the window of his house.
Because of his size the landlord and sheriff of Lancashire, Gilbert Ireland, hired him as a bodyguard. When King James I stopped by in 1617 to knight Ireland he heard about Middleton and invited both of them to the court, which they accepted in 1620. Middleton beat the King's champion in wrestling and in doing so broke the man's thumb. He received ?20, a large amount of money in those times. Jealous of his wealth, Middleton's companions mugged him or swindled him out of his money while he was returning to Hale. Middleton died impoverished in 1623. He was buried in the cemetery of St Mary's Church in Hale. The epitaph reads, Here lyeth the bodie of John Middleton the Childe of Hale. Nine feet three. Borne 1578 Dyede 1623. He is likely one of the tallest people in history. If these height markings are accurate, he would surpass Robert Wadlow's stature

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RC3CKK - The Northern Ireland Housing Executive is the public housing authority for Northern Ireland. It is Northern Ireland's largest social housing landlord, and the enforcing authority for those parts of housing orders that involve houses with multiple occupants, houses that are unfit, and housing conditions. The NIHE employed 2,865 persons as of 31 March 2020
Prior to the establishment of the Housing Executive, public housing in Northern Ireland was managed primarily by local councils. Only ratepayers and their spouses could vote in council elections - sub-tenants, lodgers, and adults living with their parents could not - so allocation of housing was distorted for political ends. This largely took the form of discrimination against Catholics to ensure Unionist control of councils, opposition to which was a major plank of the Northern Ireland civil rights movement of the late 1960s. Following civil disturbances in 1968?69, a commission appointed by the Northern Ireland government and led by Lord Cameron found that grievances concerning housing were the first general cause of the disorders which it investigated. Lord Cameron's report concluded:
A rising sense of continuing injustice and grievance among large sections of the Catholic population in Northern Ireland, in particular in Derry and Dungannon, in respect of (i) inadequacy of housing provision by certain local authorities (ii) unfair methods of allocation of houses built and let by such authorities, in particular
refusals and omissions to adopt a 'points' system in determining priorities and making allocations (iii) misuse in certain cases of discretionary powers of allocation of houses in order to perpetuate Unionist control of the local authority
The Housing Executive was established by the Housing Executive Act (Northern Ireland) 1971. A single all-purpose housing authority for Northern Ireland had been advocated as early as 1964 by the Northern Ireland Labour Party

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R72E6N - Leading contractor developer for the social housing sector, Lane End Developments Construction, has gone into administration.
The Warrington-based business operates across the North west of England and Wales.
Managing directors of insolvency firm Quantuma Jeremy Woodside and Frank Ofonagoro, both of the firm's Manchester office, have been appointed joint administrators.
The company was set up in 2016 and has built more than 1,100. It currently has live projects on 17 different sites - which aimed to create 1,700 new homes - employing 118 staff.
Current projects include delivering a 177 affordable homes scheme in Llandudno in partnership with ClwydAlyn and a 60 home scheme with Torus in Wigan.
In its last financial year, to the end of May, 2022, the company generated revenues of around ?81m with a pre-tax profit of nearly ?250,000.
Mr Woodside said:This is obviously a very difficult and uncertain time for the company, its employees and suppliers, and its wider stakeholders.
We're currently working alongside potential funders and senior management to assess the options available to them to restructure Lane End Developments Construction and allow it to continue to operate and deliver housing projects.
The contractor had been developing schemes with a string of housing associations, including L&Q, Jigsaw Homes and Onward, when it announced its collapse in April.
At the time, the three landlords said they were disappointed and concerned about the firm's collapse, but none were named in the list of creditors that are owed money.
The administrator's proposal shows that for the year end of 31 May 2022, Lane End had a turnover of more than ?81m, but its profit for the year was less than ?178,000. Tangible assets were just over ?1m.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64NT6 - This image shows the interior of a Burger King fast food restaurant in Warrington, Cheshire, focusing on the main service counter area. Digital menu boards displaying burgers, meals, and prices are mounted above the counter, while electronic tills and food preparation equipment are visible behind.
The layout reflects the standard design of modern quick service restaurants, prioritising speed, efficiency, and clear visual communication of menu options. Digital screens have become a key feature of fast food interiors, allowing prices, promotions, and products to be updated easily and presented consistently across UK outlets.
Burger King is one of the world's largest fast food chains and a familiar presence on British high streets, retail parks, and transport hubs. Restaurants like this cater to eat-in and takeaway customers, forming part of everyday food consumption and convenience culture in towns such as Warrington.
Photographed in daylight with no customers visible at the counter, the image provides a neutral, documentary view of contemporary fast food retail infrastructure. It is well suited for editorial use covering consumer habits, branded food environments, UK high street dining, and the operation of international fast food chains.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDH2 - This image shows a blue heritage plaque commemorating Charles Dickens, mounted on the exterior wall of Tavistock House in the Bloomsbury area of central London. The plaque records that Dickens lived at or near this site between 1851 and 1860, a significant period in his literary career during the height of Victorian Britain.
Charles Dickens is widely regarded as one of the greatest English novelists, known for works such as Bleak House, Hard Times, Little Dorrit, and Great Expectations. His time at Tavistock House coincided with the production of several major novels and reflects his close association with London, a city that features prominently in his writing as both setting and subject.
Blue plaques form part of a long-established British tradition of marking buildings connected with notable historical figures, helping to preserve cultural memory within the urban landscape. Positioned on a stone facade beside an arched window, the plaque links everyday streetscapes with the literary and social history of the capital.
Photographed in daylight, the image emphasises the crisp blue-and-white enamel of the plaque against the pale masonry, making it well suited to editorial use covering English literature, literary heritage, historic London, famous writers, education, and cultural tourism in the UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PNRFC4 - Purplebricks is an online estate agent which operates in the UK. Founded in 2012 by Michael Bruce, Kenny Bruce and David Shepherd, it is backed by investors that include venture capital firm DN Capital as well as Neil Woodford, Paul Pindar, and Errol Damelin.
History
Early history
Michael Bruce, Kenny Bruce and David Shepherd conceived their idea for an online estate agency in 2012.Property sales in the United Kingdom had historically been handled by traditional (or high street) estate agencies
Purplebricks' commission-free, hybrid agency business model was intended to disrupt the UK residential property market, and marketing has been a central element of the company's business strategy.
In 2016, Purplebricks began using the tagline commisery, meaning the misery home sellers feel about paying commission, to distinguish itself from traditional real estate agencies. A full advertising campaign about the concept followed the next year, and ran extensively in the UK, US, and Australia. The campaign won an Effectiveness Award from the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising in 2018 for demonstrating proof on payback on marketing communications, as the campaign contributed to a 218 percent growth in revenue.
In 2019, Purplebricks was added to the Superbrands list, which tracks consumer perception of brand and marketing activity. Purplebricks' presence on the list was seen as an indication that the company had established itself as a household name. In 2020, Purplebricks claimed to have achieved 98 percent brand awareness within the UK

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PHEJ62 - Daylight saving time (DST), also referred to as daylight savings time, daylight time (United States, Canada, and Australia), or summer time (United Kingdom, European Union, and others), is the practice of advancing clocks (typically by one hour) during warmer months so that darkness falls at a later clock time. The typical implementation of DST is to set clocks forward by one hour in either the late winter or spring (spring forward), and to set clocks back by one hour in the fall (fall back) to return to standard time. As a result, there is one 23-hour day in early spring and one 25-hour day in the middle of autumn.
The idea of aligning waking hours to daylight hours to conserve candles was first proposed in 1784 by U.S. polymath Benjamin Franklin. In a satirical letter to the editor of The Journal of Paris, Franklin suggested that waking up earlier in the summer would economize on candle usage
and calculated considerable savings
After synchronously resetting all clocks in a region to one hour ahead of standard time, individuals following a clock-based schedule will awaken an hour earlier than they would have otherwise?or rather an hour's worth of darkness earlier
they will begin and complete daily work routines an hour of daylight earlier: they will have available to them an extra hour of daylight after their workday activities. They will have one less hour of daylight at the start of the workday, making the policy less practical during winter.
Proponents of daylight saving time argue that most people prefer a greater increase in daylight hours after the typical nine to five workday. Supporters have also argued that DST decreases energy consumption by reducing the need for lighting and heating, but the actual effect on overall energy use is heavily disputed

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M95NM7 - The entrance gates to the Sailors' Home were elaborate decorative pieces of ironwork which served the dual purpose of protecting the Savings Bank and keeping out seamen who might wish to gain entry to the Home after the strict 10 pm curfew.
By April 1852 the lower sections of the gates had been installed, decorated with a combination of elements from the interior balconies
four great panels of rope-work with central mermaid and trident figures identical to those inside. The two outer panels were fixed whilst the two centre sections rolled behind them on rails where they were hidden from sight while the Home was open for business.
The iron-work of the lower gates, produced a solid, intimidating aspect compared with the much lighter appearance of the balcony railings. The huge mass of iron made an impassable barrier but also a massive weight and it would have taken some effort to slide the gates open and close.
1852: An Unfortunate Death of Mary Ann Price
1907: The Tragic Death of Constable Locke
In the Annals of the Sailors' Home, printed in the Home's annual report for the year 1935, against the year 1907 was the following entry: November - Police Officer Locke killed through front gate falling upon him.
Early on the morning of Sunday 24 November, nearly an hour after midnight, Police constable number 324A, Brownlow Locke, of the Liverpool City Constabulary, met his death in a very strange and unexpected manner.
1951: The Gates Move to Their New Home in Sandwell
As part of the repair to War Damage following the Liverpool Blitz it was decided to remove the gates. On 25 March 1948 W & T Avery who had swallowed-up Pooley's and Sons were offered the gates by the Sailors' Home Committee. On 18 May 1949 Avery's made an offer of 50 guineas for the gates, which was accepted on 3 May. 1951.
The home was demolished between 1974-1975. After refurbishment at Barr & Grosvenor Ltd's foundry Wolverhampton, the gates were returned to the Liverpool One shopping developmet

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K6C9C4 - Community land trusts ? or CLTs ? are democratic, non profit organisations that own and develop land for the benefit of the community.
They typically provide affordable homes, community gardens, civic buildings, pubs, shops, shared workspace, energy schemes and conservation landscapes.
Run by ordinary people. They are community organisations run by ordinary people who want to make a difference to their local community, putting control of assets into the hands of local people. They can be set up by the community or a landowner, developer or council.
Protecting community assets forever. They ensure that their homes are permanently and genuinely affordable. CLTs act as long-term stewards of land and the assets on it. They ensure that it is put to the benefit of the local community, not just for now but for every future occupier.
A world wide movement. Started in the USA, CLTs are now a worldwide movement. In both urban and rural areas, CLTs are a key part of the future of land, affordable housing and community facilities.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K7NBGX - Matalan is a British fashion and homeware retailer based in Knowsley, Merseyside. It was established by John Hargreaves in 1985, and is still owned by the Hargreaves family. As of 2020, the company employed over 13,000, and had 230 stores in the United Kingdom, together with franchise stores in the Middle East.
John Hargreaves opened the first Matalan store in 1985 at Bamber Bridge, near Preston, Lancashire. There were fifty stores by 1995, and in 1997, the company moved its headquarters from Preston to Skelmersdale, also in Lancashire. The company was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1998, but taken private again by the Hargreaves family in October 2006.
During 2009, John Hargreaves sought to sell off Matalan, but by February 2010, had failed to find buyers willing to meet the ?1.5 billion price.[4] Jason Hargreaves was appointed managing director in July 2013. The headquarters moved to a purpose built site at Knowsley, Merseyside in 2014. The company won approval for this scheme in October 2012.
Controversy
Matalan was among the companies who sourced clothes from the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh which collapsed, killing 1,134, in April 2013. In July 2014, they were the focus of a campaign by 38 Degrees and Labour Behind the Label, for failing to contribute to the official compensation fund coordinated by the ILO. This was in contrast to some of their main competitors, such as Primark who contributed $9 million.
After pressure, they announced that they would contribute an undisclosed amount. It was later revealed that they had paid ?60,000 into the fund, which labour rights campaigns challenged as being an insufficient amount compared with other retailers.
Structure
Matalan Retail Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Missouri Topco Limited, a holding company which is based in Guernsey, and is controlled by the Hargreaves family.
In the Middle East, the Matalan brand is franchised to BTC Fashion General Trading, based in Qatar. BTC have stores in

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD243H - This image shows the exterior window display and signage of Sandgate Coffee, an independent takeaway coffee shop located on Sandgate in the historic seaside town of Whitby, North Yorkshire. The hand-painted sign describes the caf?? as the Home of the Whitby Fatties, a local variation of the traditional Yorkshire Fat Rascals cake, a rich baked treat associated with the region.
The shop window features a colourful and decorative cake display in shades of pink, designed to attract passing visitors and highlight the caf??'s baking theme. A clear notice indicates that the business operates on a takeaway-only basis, reflecting the small footprint typical of many independent food outlets in Whitby's busy tourist streets.
Whitby is well known for its strong food heritage, including jet jewellery, seafood, and regional baking traditions. Small caf??s such as Sandgate Coffee contribute to the town's appeal as a destination for food tourism, offering locally themed specialities alongside everyday refreshments.
The photograph documents a detail of Whitby's independent retail and food culture, capturing how local identity and traditional recipes are used to create distinctive offerings within a popular tourist town.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K1P04T - Gamesley is a residential area within the Borough of High Peak in Derbyshire, England, west of Glossop and close to the River Etherow which forms the boundary with Tameside in Greater Manchester. Gamesley is a ward of the High Peak Borough Council. It had a population of 2,531 at the 2011 Census
The original village of Gamesley consisted of rows of cottages inhabited by workers at the local textile mills, and it remained largely undeveloped until the 1960s, when it underwent considerable change. It was chosen as the location of an overspill estate, built by Manchester City Council. This was in order to rehouse people from decaying inner city areas of Manchester. These housing areas were also built in other towns surrounding Manchester, such as nearby Hattersley on the outskirts of Hyde.
The Gamesley estate was built in 2 half's. The first houses were built by contractors Finnegans which were constructed with
flat felted roofs, pebble dash cladding ground floors and tile cladded first floors. Finnegans houses were equipped with warm air central heating which used gas as an energy source. The Finnegan side of the estate was known locally as the ?gas side'. In the late 1980s the local authority renovated the Finnegan system built houses, the works included re-enveloping the external building with traditional bricks and mortar. The works also added apex roofing complete with roofing tiles.
The second half of the Gamesley estate was built a couple of years later by George Wimpey using the Wimpey no-fines house building method. The houses were constructed with full pebble dash finish and tiled apex roofing. The houses built by George Wimpey had a solid concrete ground floor which had electrical underfloor heating installed, the first floors of these houses were built with no heating. Due to electricity being the main energy source for heating, the George Wimpey side of Gamesley became known locally as the ?electric side'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTRT3W - Strangeways, Here We Come is the fourth and final studio album by English rock band the Smiths. It was released on 28/09/1987 by Rough Trade Records, several months after the group had disbanded. All of the songs were composed by Johnny Marr, with lyrics written and sung by Morrissey.
The album reached number two on the UK Albums Chart, staying in the chart for 17 weeks. The album also became an international success, peaking at number 16 in the European Albums Chart
from sales covering the 18 major European countries, staying in that chart for nine weeks. The album was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry on 1 October 1987 and also by the Recording Industry Association of America on 19 September 1990
The album takes its title from Manchester's notorious Strangeways Prison (now called HM Prison Manchester), whilst the line Borstal, here we come is taken from the novel Billy Liar. Strangeways, of course, is that hideous Victorian monstrosity of a prison operating 88 to a cell, Morrissey has said

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JWB54C - Moore is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Halton, Cheshire, England, located midway between Runcorn and Warrington. It has a population of 807.
Etymology
The name 'Moore' comes from the Old English word mor, meaning 'moor, or fen'. The village's earliest recording was as Mora, some time in the 12th century.
History
Moore is the site of a disused railway station named Daresbury. The railway station was opened in 1850 and was located on the south side of Runcorn Road. The station was closed to passengers in 1952 and closed completely in 1965. The platforms and ramps down from road are still visible from Runcorn Road. The railway station was situated on the Birkenhead Joint Railway close to Warrington and in the village of Moore. The railway station was the second to open in the village. The first railway station which was very close by was part of the Grand Junction Railway which opened on 4 July 1837. Moore was a second class station at which a First Class train would not stop. The engineer for the northern half of the new railway was Joseph Locke who became a famous as a railway engineer. The date of closure of Moore railway station is uncertain. Daresbury railway station was initially called Moore but the name was changed to Daresbury in April 1861 taking its name from a village a mile or so away.
The area of Moore to the north of the West Coast Main Line and west of Moss Lane was designated as part of Runcorn New Town in 1964 and the land allocated to industry. The New Town Masterplan was amended in 1975 to reduce the amount of industrial land around the village and to create a green buffer between it and what would become Manor Park Industrial Estate

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JN828A - Thomas Greenall established what was to be the family business, Wilderspool brewery in 1762. It was a highly successful venture. So successful that Thomas' son, Edward was able to purchase Walton Estate in 1814. And by the 1830s, Edward had succeeded in building Walton Hall. However, it wasn't until 1910 and 1930 that Lord and Lady Daresbury opened the estate to the public. By that time Walton's spectacular gardens were the main attraction on open days.
Unfortunately, Edward didn't have long to enjoy the estate before his death in 1835. It was his son Gilbert who made Walton the Greenall family home and country estate. As well as controlling the family brewing business, Gilbert also held political and social aspirations. By the time of his retirement, Gilbert had served Warrington as Conservative Member of Parliament for over 30 years!
Such was his influence and standing in the local community that Gilbert was granted a peerage in 1927. ?Sir' Gilbert spent his life establishing Walton Estate, including the extension of the hall in the 1870s. It was during this renovation that the now-iconic clock tower was built.
However, it was Sir Gilbert's son (also Gilbert), who transformed the estate. More commonly known as Lord Daresbury, he made the estate into a model of agricultural excellence. Such was his success that the gardens would attract up to 45,000 people during open days and in particular for The Walton Show.
At the height of Lord Daresbury's wealth, he had bought up to 7,000 acres of land around Walton Hall, and financed local buildings such as St John the Evangelist Church in Walton Village

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JMA8EC - Situated between the town of Stroud and the village of Chalford, Brimscombe Port is a stunning location at the foot of the Cotswold escarpment, next to the River Frome and Thames and Severn Canal.
Brimscombe Port started life in 1779 and became a key transfer point for sea-going barges to narrow boats accommodating some 100 vessels at its height. Sadly the canal and basin were filled in after the Second World War. The canal headquarters, which then became a school, was demolished as part of road straightening in the 1960s. The Port took on a new lease of life as an industrial estate, becoming home to a number businesses, including the family run ring binder company Benson & Sons. Sadly, as businesses moved out of the site, it started to fall into disrepair.
Recently, the Port was a temporary home to a number of Community Interest Companies whilst viability for the site was assessed and funding was secured.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNBYC2 - Chipping Campden is a market town in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. It is notable for its terraced High Street, dating from the 14th century to the 17th century. (Chipping is from Old English c?ping, 'market', 'market-place'
the same element is found in other towns such as Chipping Norton, Chipping Sodbury and Chipping (now High) Wycombe.)
A wool trading centre in the Middle Ages, Chipping Campden enjoyed the patronage of wealthy wool merchants, most notably William Greville (d.1401). The High Street is lined with buildings built from locally quarried oolitic limestone known as Cotswold stone, and boasts a wealth of vernacular architecture. Much of the town centre is a conservation area which has helped to preserve the original buildings. The town is an end point of the Cotswold Way, a 102-mile long-distance footpath.
Chipping Campden has hosted its own Olympic Games since 1612.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M07A7Y - Whitehall is a road and area in the City of Westminster, Central London. The road forms the first part of the A3212 road from Trafalgar Square to Chelsea. It is the main thoroughfare running south from Trafalgar Square towards Parliament Square. The street is recognised as the centre of the Government of the United Kingdom and is lined with numerous departments and ministries, including the Ministry of Defence, Horse Guards and the Cabinet Office. Consequently, the name Whitehall is used as a metonym for the British civil service and government, and as the geographic name for the surrounding area.
The name was taken from the Palace of Whitehall that was the residence of Kings Henry VIII through to William III, before its destruction by fire in 1698
only the Banqueting House has survived. Whitehall was originally a wide road that led to the front of the palace
the route to the south was widened in the 18th century following the destruction of the palace.
As well as government buildings, the street is known for its memorial statues and monuments, including the UK's primary war memorial, the Cenotaph. South of the Cenotaph the thoroughfare becomes Parliament Street.
The name Whitehall was used for several buildings in the Tudor period. It either referred to a building made of light stone, or as a general term for any festival building. This included the Royal Palace of Whitehall, which in turn gave its name to the street
Numerous London bus routes run along Whitehall, including 12, 24, 88, 159 and 453
Downing Street leads off the south-west end of Whitehall, just above Parliament Street. It was named after Sir George Downing, who built a row of houses along the street around 1680 leading west from Whitehall.
Richmond House, at No. 79, has held the Department of Health since 1987. The building is scheduled to be a temporary debating chamber from 2025, while the Houses of Parliament undergo a refurbishment and modernisation programme

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JDRMHK - The day IKEA opened in Warrington and transformed the homes of a nation
It's been over 30 years since we got our first dose of the renowned retailer
It's been over 30 years since Manchester shoppers got their first taste of renowned furniture retailer IKEA.
Set up by Ingvar Kamprad in 1948, the Swedish brand opened its first-ever UK store in Warrington on October 1, 1987 - and for years has welcomed thousands of shoppers travelling from across Manchester, Liverpool and further afield.
The flat-pack furniture maze has, over time, become the place where couples have argued over who will assemble their new wardrobe, where kids have begged for Swedish meatballs, and where parents have kitted their teenagers out before they leave the nest for student accommodation
The retailing giant was an instant hit with his concept of stylish, affordable, ready-to-assemble furniture and homewares.
The IKEA Warrington building was completed at Gemini Retail Park in May 1987, and, in the weeks afterwards, the store began to recruit staff for the October opening
In the late eighties and early 90s, before soft play centres were everywhere, IKEA endeared itself to kids with a ball pit at the front of the store - and the chance to sit on every chair and lie on every bed before a trip to the cafe
And there's still no better way to end a hard day's shopping than with a steaming plate of Swedish meatballs, chips, peas, sauce, and lots of lingonberry jam

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JBXJMP - The Halliwell Jones Stadium is a rugby league stadium in Warrington, England, which is the home ground of the Warrington Wolves. It has also staged Challenge Cup semi-finals, the European Nations Final, the National League Grand Finals' Day, two games of the 2013 Rugby League World Cup and four games of the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. It is the 62nd largest stadium in England.
Ground was broke at the new site in 2002 and bucked the common trend of modern stadia by including terracing areas rather than being an all-seater stadium, with the South and West stands both containing terracing It also has enormous pitch dimensions of 120 m x 74 m, as requested by Warrington's head coach of the time, Paul Cullen, due to his desire to play expansive rugby. The stadium officially opened in 2004
On 3 March 2011, the club announced that the corners of the East Stand at the stadium would be filled in to create a further 2,000 spaces made up of seating and terracing for the 2012 season. The stadium capacity, set at 15,000 for the first sell-out home match against St. Helens in 2012, was increased to 15,200 and can grow to 15,693 as the club proves it can handle the bigger crowds and get extra safety certificates. The club has also announced plans to increase the stadium's capacity to around 22,000 should the need arise.

Success in the Republic of Ireland led to expansion into Northern Ireland, with Penneys opening a large store in Belfast City Centre in 1971. The company subsequently expanded outside of Ireland with a Primark store in Derby, England, in 1973. The company could not use the name Penneys in Europe outside Ireland as it was registered by J. C. Penney. The name Primark was then invented to use outside Ireland
Primark offers a diverse range of products, including baby and children's clothing, womenswear, menswear, homeware, accessories, footwear, beauty products and confectionery

The first Dunelm store opened in Churchgate Leicester in 1984 with the first superstore opening in Rotherham in 1991. In 1996 Will Adderley took over responsibility for the day-to-day running of the company from his father, Bill Adderley. The expansion of Dunelm continued with a new head office and warehouse being established in 1999 in Syston, Leicestershire
In November 2020, the company was criticised by shareholders for renominating Paula Vennells to its board, despite her responsibility for the Post Office subpostmasters' scandal, during which her leadership was accused of having been both cruel and incompetent by a Conservative peer and various MPs.[11] Her resignation from the board was announced on the morning of 26 April 2021 after all the remaining convictions of subpostmasters had been quashed.

APPLETON

Grappenhall
Main Location: Land to the East of Stretton Road, North of Pepper Street, Appleton Thorn
Proposal: Full Planning (Major) - Proposed Erection of 71 dwellings, public open space, landscape and associated infrastructure.
Following pressure from campaigners, the scheme was reduced again.
The revised proposal for 71 properties to make way for more green space on the site was approved by the committee on Wednesday.
It will feature 22 affordable homes and eight bungalows.
It brings an end to a long planning battle, with residents campaigning against the proposals since the developer held public consultations in 2014.
Kevin McAloon, representing the Campaign Against Ruining our Environment and Neighbourhood Development Plan groups, said residents felt a 'more acceptable' amount of green space has been provided following positive talks with Bloor.

New development not that far from me, from Barratt Homes, Appleton Grange, eating up a bit more green belt. Personally, I can live with that if the appropriate infrastructure (roads, schools etc) are arranged to support it and a mix of tenures (including some affordable (small a) help locals, especially young ones to get on the housing ladder, if they want to.
Based on the Trustpilot reviews, I am unsure if Barratt would be one of my first goto builders however - uk.trustpilot.com/review/barrattdevelopments.co.uk

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RBJ9RF - Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and leisure/entertainment destination of Long Island on the Coney Island Channel, which is part of the Lower Bay in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City. Coney Island was formerly the westernmost of the Outer Barrier islands on Long Island's southern shore, but in the early 20th century it became connected to the rest of Long Island by land fill. The residential portion of the peninsula is a community of 60,000 people in its western part, with Sea Gate to its west, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach to its east, the Lower Bay to the south, and Gravesend to the north.
Coney Island was originally part of the colonial town of Gravesend. By the mid-19th century, it became a seaside resort, and by the late 19th century, amusement parks were also built at the location. The attractions reached a historical peak during the first half of the 20th century, declining in popularity after World War II and following years of neglect. The area was revitalized with the opening of the MCU Park in 2001 and several amusement rides in the 2010s. Nathan's Famous, Inc. is an American company that operates a chain of fast food restaurants specializing in hot dogs. The original Nathan's restaurant stands at the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues in the Coney Island neighborhood of the Brooklyn borough of New York City, New York. The company's headquarters are at One Jericho Plaza in Jericho, New York, part of Oyster Bay, New York.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RDAWB5 - Akt (stylised as akt and legally known as The Albert Kennedy Trust) is a voluntary organisation based in England, created in 1989 to serve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ+) young people who are homeless or living in a hostile environment. It started in Greater Manchester in 1989 and opened in London in 1996, and expanded to Newcastle in 2013, Newcastle upon Tyne and Bristol.
History
The charity is named after Albert Kennedy (31 January 1973 ? 30 April 1989), a 16-year-old Social Services care leaver from Manchester who was gay. Kennedy died after falling from the top of Chorlton Street multi-storey car park. Despite an inquest the circumstances of his death remain unclear. The official version is that he died from misadventure.
Kennedy had experienced a great deal of homophobia during his life. Manchester's gay community was moved into action by the Trust's founder patron Cath Hall. Cath Hall was a straight foster carer who saw the need for an organisation to be set up to support young lesbian, gay, bi and trans people who were facing homelessness because of rejection at home. She had observed that Kennedy's case was not isolated, and that many other LGBTQ+ young people in and out of the foster care system were struggling with the effects of homophobia. Hall described the founding of the trust as an emotional response, an angry response, to what was going on.
As a result, the Albert Kennedy Trust was formed, officially becoming a Trust in 1990.
In 2019 the Albert Kennedy Trust rebranded as akt.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8DCT4 - The William Nuttall Cottage Homes are a good example of a planned development by a charitable benefactor, the sweet manufacturer William Nuttall. He set up a trust to provide 'cottage homes for aged spinsters' and the William Nuttall Trust purchased land in Bennetthorpe from the council on which to build these homes. The almshouses were erected in 1930, until then the area between Bennetthorpe and the racecourse had been relatively undeveloped.
The cottage homes were laid out in the pattern of traditional almshouses of standard size set in communal grounds. The buildings comprise a symmetrical group of 24 two storey homes at the centre of which is a linked terrace of eight dwellings around a central archway. To each side are four pairs of homes, each advancing forwards. The buildings are of red engineering brick with stone and concrete dressings and have either 'Rosemary' plain clay tile or Westmoreland slate roofs. The buildings are not identical but have common features and display typical detailing and materials of the inter-war period. The whole site was bounded by a low brick wall with a central vehicular access and symmetrical pedestrian side access.
The William Nuttall Cottage Homes development remains relatively unchanged and continues to have the use for which it was originally intended. Within the conservation area there are no listed structures but all the buildings are considered to be key unlisted buildings.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8KEYG - Bawtry is a small market town and civil parish which lies where the western branch of the Roman Ermine Street crosses the River Idle in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England, close to the county's border with Nottinghamshire, and meets the old course of the Great North Road. Nearby towns include Gainsborough to the east, Retford to the south south-east, Worksop to the south-west and Doncaster to the north-west. Historically within the West Riding of Yorkshire, it had a population of 3,204 in the UK census of 2001, increasing to 3,573 at the 2011 Census
Bawtry is located in the metropolitan borough of Doncaster on the border with Nottinghamshire, and is situated between Bircotes and Misson at the conjunction of the A614, A631 and A638 roads. The present A638 was for centuries the Great North Road, and in the 20th century the town was a notorious bottleneck, until it was bypassed in 1965. The county boundary with Nottinghamshire runs just to the south of the town and for this reason the southernmost house on the Great North Road is named 'Number One Yorkshire'.
The town's former prosperity was based on its communications, the River Idle in the days when it was a port, the Great North Road in the coaching era, and the Great Northern Railway.
Bawtry's geographical location is 53? 25' 40 North, 1? 1' West, at an elevation of around 65 feet (20 m) above sea level.
The town is located just south of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, formerly RAF Finningley. Bawtry Hall was home to RAF No.1 Group Bomber Command during and after the Second World War, and became the Headquarters of RAF Strike Command (see RAF Bawtry). From 1989 to 2013 Bawtry Hall operated as a Christian conference centre and a base for several Christian organisations.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P4HWMD - The Vagabonds Carnival Club was founded in 1947 by Ken Parsons and Walt Creedy, and the club's first entry, The Miners, took first place at Bridgwater Carnival. Members originally met at Unity House (the local Labour Party headquarters) for a room rent of one shilling per night.
The following year, the club moved to The Railway Hotel, and the new home brought further success, after winning the carnival concerts with the stage show Gay Bachelors.
The Bristol and Exeter Pub (St John Street) became home to the club in 1951, before it moved to Ye Olde Oake (High Street) after club member, Ray Heal, took a tenancy with local brewers Starkey, Knight and Ford.
In 2001, the club were looking for a new site to build its entries after being forced to leave its cart building site at Huntworth after 17 years. After identifying a suitable new site at Dunwear, the club set about constructing a new shed. The cost of doing this, in terms of both time and money, proved a heavy burden, and for the first time in its history, the club was unable to enter a cart into Bridgwater Carnival in 2002. So in true carnival spirit, some members rode the procession route on the back of a lorry, with the remaining members walking behind.
The club is currently based at The Gallery, High Street, Bridgwater.
Whatever happens, The Vagabonds Carnival Club has already done enough to stamp its mark in the annals of carnival history and will, with luck, continue to do so for a long time to come.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCGHHN - Leeds is a city in the metropolitan borough of Leeds, in the county of West Yorkshire, England. The city lies within the United Kingdom's fourth-most populous urban area, with a population of 2.6 million.
Leeds was a small manorial borough in the 13th century, and in the 17th and 18th centuries it became a major centre for the production and trading of wool, and in the Industrial Revolution a major mill town
wool was still the dominant industry, but flax, engineering, iron foundries, printing, and other industries were also important. From being a market town in the valley of the River Aire in the 16th century, Leeds expanded and absorbed the surrounding villages to become a populous urban centre by the mid-20th century.
Leeds has one of the most diverse economies of the all the UK's main employment centres and has seen the fastest rate of private-sector jobs growth of any UK city. It also has the highest ratio of private to public sector jobs of all the UK's Core Cities, with 77% of its workforce working in the private sector. Leeds has the third-largest jobs total by local authority area, with 480,000 in employment and self-employment at the beginning of 2015. Leeds is ranked as a gamma world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network. Leeds is the cultural, financial and commercial heart of the West Yorkshire Urban Area. Leeds is served by four universities, and has the fourth largest student population in the country and the country's fourth largest urban economy.
Today, Leeds has become the largest legal and financial centre, outside London with the financial and insurance services industry worth ?13 billion to the city's economy. The Finance and business service sector account for 38% of total output with more than 30 national and international banks located in the city, including an office of the Bank of England. Leeds is also the UK's third-largest manufacturing centre with around 1,800 firms and 39,000 employees.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has revealed a significant increase in houses planned for the Green Belt, and yet most of these houses will be unaffordable to those who need them.
Based on local and city-regional planning policies and new data from planning consultants Glenigan, CPRE's annual Green Belt Under Siege report shows that more than 70% of houses proposed for development are not expected to be ?affordable'. It also demonstrates that just 16% of houses built on Green Belt land since 2009 outside local plans were classed as ?affordable'.
In total, 425,000 houses are now planned for Green Belt land. This is an increase of 54% on March 2016, and the biggest year-on-year increase in building proposed in the Green Belt for two decades. Green Belt in the North West, West Midlands and South East is under particular pressure.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BC397X - British Home Stores, commonly abbreviated to BHS and latterly legally styled BHS Ltd, was a British department store chain, primarily selling clothing and household items. In its later years, the company began to expand into furniture, electronics, entertainment, convenience groceries and fragrance and beauty products.
The company was founded in 1928 by a group of U.S. entrepreneurs, and had a total of 163 stores mainly located in high streets or shopping centres by the time of its closure in 2016, as well as 74 international stores across 18 separate territories.
BHS was previously a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index, but was bought by Sir Philip Green in 2000 and taken private. The company became part of Green's Arcadia Group in 2009. Following a number of loss-making years, the company was sold to the consortium Retail Acquisitions Ltd led by the serial bankrupt Dominic Chappell, in March 2015 for the nominal price of ?1.
In April 2016, 13 months after the purchase by Retail Acquisitions, the company entered administration following unsuccessful attempts to continue trading. It was eventually wound down, and all stores were closed by late August 2016 following failed attempts to find a buyer. The overseas franchises and digital business were sold during the administration period to Al Mana Group, who closed down the website in June 2018

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2D8NX50 - The Identity and Passport Service was established on 1 April 2006, following the passing of the Identity Cards Act 2006 which merged the UK Passport Service with the Home Office's Identity Cards programme to form the new executive agency.
In 2007, the ninety British diplomatic missions that issued passports were consolidated into seven regional passport processing centres (RPPCs) based in D?sseldorf, Hong Kong, Madrid, Paris, Pretoria, Washington, D.C. and Wellington with an additional centre in Dublin.
The Identity Documents Act 2010 repealed the Identity Cards Act 2006, and required the cancellation of all identity cards and the destruction of all data held.
On 1 April 2011 responsibility for British passports issued overseas passed from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to IPS. The printing of passports issued overseas had been done in the UK since August 2011 and the administrative work performed at these RPPCs was repatriated to the UK during the 2013?14 financial year. From April 2014 all British nationals based overseas had to apply for their passports directly to the UK.
The Identity and Passport Service was renamed HM Passport Office on 13 May 2013 in an effort to reflect the agency's departure from its association with the scrapped National Identity Register and ID cards. The government stated in the press release that The inclusion of 'Her Majesty's' in the title recognises that passports are the property of the Crown, bear the royal coat of arms and are issued under the royal prerogative.
HMPO's executive agency status was removed on 1 October 2014 and it became a division within the Home Office. Its board reports directly to the Home Office's executive management board

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F7YN94 - In association football, the United Trinity or the Holy Trinity refers to the Manchester United trio of George Best, Denis Law, and Bobby Charlton, who helped United become the first ever English club team to win the European Cup in 1968.
Charlton was a member of the Busby Babes, a group of talented young players brought through the club's academy by the eponymous manager Matt Busby and his assistant Jimmy Murphy, as well as club scout Joe Armstrong, who discovered Charlton in 1953, and Best in 1961, amongst others. Law arrived at the club from Italian team Torino for a club record ?115,000 in 1962, having previously played for Huddersfield Town and rivals Manchester City.
Charlton made his debut on 6 October 1956, scoring twice in a 4?2 win against Charlton Athletic. Law made his debut on 18 August 1962, scoring in a 2?2 with West Bromwich Albion. Although Best made debut against West Bromwich Albion on 14 September 1963, it wouldn't be until the reverse fixture on 18 January 1964 when all three would feature in the same starting line-up
a 4?1 victory in which all three scored, with Law scoring two of them

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DED3YP - The Old Tolbooth was the main municipal building in the city of Edinburgh, Scotland for more than 400 years. The medieval structure, which was located at the west end of the Luckenbooths on the High Street in the Old Town, was first established in the 14th century by royal charter. Over the years it served a variety of purposes such as housing the Burgh Council, early meetings of the Estates of Scotland and the Court of Session. The Tolbooth was also the burgh's main gaol where public execution and torture were routinely conducted.
In 1817 the building, which had been rebuilt and renovated several times, was demolished.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DCYEHJ - Brympton d'Evercy (alternatively Brympton House), a manor house near Yeovil in the county of Somerset, England, has been called the most beautiful in England. In 1927 the British magazine Country Life published a set of three articles on the house, in which Christopher Hussey, near the start of his 50-year career as an architectural authority and documenter of British country houses, described it as the one which created the greatest impression and summarises so exquisitely English country life qualities. His articles remain the only detailed account of the house, which in its long history has belonged to six families: the D'Evercys, the Stourtons, the Sydenhams, the Fanes, the Weeks (1992?2008), and the Glossop family in 2008.
The house is part of a complex consisting of the mansion, its stables and other outbuildings, the parish church and a puzzling building known as the Priest House. Little remains of the original D'Evercy manor built between 1220 and 1325, as the present house has evolved on the same site.

'Street Life' is the opening track of Roxy Music's third album Stranded, their first album with Eddie Jobson. He replaced the mighty Brian Eno. It was released as a single in the UK in November 1973 and reached number 9 on the charts.
Def Leppard covered 'Street Life' on their album Yeah!. Morrissey also performed the song during some European festival dates during his 2006 tour.
There are quite a few good Roxy compilations around. Check one out to hear more from this excellent band.

I met this chap in Leeds, just outside the city centre. He struck up a conversation while wheeling along his bike. He was very well spoken and told me he slept under the M261, which scoops around the town. Its pretty dry under there, but will be bitterly cold as a chill wind blows through.
I left him the change in my pocket, it was too late to go and buy him something to eat, which I would have preferred. I notice often that beggers are getting fussy. They prefer unopened sandwiches that can be sold on etc.
If you have an iPhone, checkout the free iHobo app. This gives a good view of what its like to be homeless and on the street. At the end you can also donate to DePaul UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF23TD - Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire, England, is one of the best preserved textile mills of the Industrial Revolution and is now a museum of the cotton industry. It is a Grade II listed building and is now in the care of the National Trust.
The mill was founded by Samuel Greg (who is represented here), in 1784 in the village of Styal on the River Bollin. Its original iron water wheel was designed by Thomas Hewes and built between 1816 and 1820.
The Hewes wheel finally broke in 1904. After that the River Bollin continued to power the mill, through two water turbines. Today the Mill is home to the most powerful working waterwheel in Europe, an iron water wheel which was originally at Glasshouses Mill at Patley Bridge. This wheel was designed by Sir William Fairbairn, the Scottish engineer who had been an apprentice of Thomas Hewes.
The estate surrounding the mill, also developed by Greg, is the most complete and least altered factory colony of the Industrial Revolution. The estate and mill were donated to the National Trust in 1939 by Alexander Carlton Greg and are open to the public. The mill continued in commercial production until 1959.
The Greg family were Unitarians and built Norcliffe Chapel in Styal village. Their non-conformist religious beliefs provided the Gregs with important business contacts as many of the major Manchester Industrialists were Unitarian. Methodist workers at the mill later sought a place of worship, and the Gregs converted a grain store in Styal village into a Chapel for their use.
In Britain, a cotton mill is a factory that houses spinning and weaving machinery. Typically built between 1775 and 1930, mills spun cotton which was an important product during the Industrial Revolution.
Cotton mills, and the mechanisation of the spinning process, were instrumental in the growth of the machine tool industry, enabling the construction of larger cotton mills. The requirement for water helped stimulate the construction of the canal system too.

Description: Tony Smith image Flickr 4468213250 - 'Rehearsal with conductor Jeremy Jackman prior to the candlelight concert by the English Baroque Choir. St Martins is in the north east corner of Trafalgar Square, central London. The patron saint is Martin of Tours.
It is a classic church, a bit of peace from the noise and traffic of Westminster. Its pretty much rectangular with Corinthian style columns. As can be seen here, the ceiling is lovely and provides a warm glow inside. The large window at the altar has an interesting distortion.
There was a lot of work done between 2006-2008 to renovate different parts of the structure. The new East Window installed above the altar at St Martin in the Fields was one element. Designed by Shirazeh Houshiary, in collaboration with architect Pip Horne. This window replacing the old window (following World War II bomb damage) marked the final stage of the church's Renewal Project on 28 April 2008.
Donations are always welcome however and I noticed it is still possible to sponsor a pane of glass and 'Give light to St Martin's'. It offers social care services to London's Chinese community and homeless people.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy F80G8P - In association football, the United Trinity or the Holy Trinity refers to the Manchester United trio of George Best, Denis Law, and Bobby Charlton, who helped United become the first ever English club team to win the European Cup in 1968.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2N482TN - How NHS bowel cancer screening scheme works, in the UK
You will be sent an invitation letter with information about bowel cancer screening. The information is to help you decide whether to take part. Then we send you a faecal immunochemical test, or ?FIT kit' for short. It detects blood in your poo (blood you would not notice by eye). We look for blood because polyps and bowel cancers sometimes bleed. Finding blood does not diagnose bowel cancer but it means you need further tests (usually a bowel examination).
Most people's screening result shows they do not need any further tests.
Some people will need further tests. If this is the case for you, we will offer you an appointment to talk about having a colonoscopy. Colonoscopy looks at the inside of your bowel. We use colonoscopy to find the source of the blood.
You use the FIT kit in the privacy of your home. It's a simple way to collect a tiny sample of poo. The kit (pictured below) is a small plastic bottle with a stick attached inside the lid. You use the stick to collect the sample, which you seal into the bottle. There are instructions with each kit.
Once used, you post the kit in its prepaid packaging to a laboratory for processing. Using the kit takes just a few minutes and it's an easy and effective way to screen for early bowel cancer.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PHEJCR - Daylight saving time (DST), also referred to as daylight savings time, daylight time (United States, Canada, and Australia), or summer time (United Kingdom, European Union, and others), is the practice of advancing clocks (typically by one hour) during warmer months so that darkness falls at a later clock time.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HD9C - Leith is a suburb of Edinburgh where it meets the sea. It lies on the south shore of the Firth of Forth, Lothian, Scotland UK. Leith had electric street lighting from 1890, and electric trams from 1905 (only Blackpool was earlier in the UK). the trams are returning at great cost and more changes have improved teh Leith waterfront in recent years.
The Malmaison Hotel, beside the entrance to Leith Docks, at the Shore, Leith, shown here was formerly a sailors' home. The Sailors' Home used to provide accommodation for sailors whose ships were in port. The Home contained comfortable rooms for each rank, a canteen, a low cost clothing shop, recreational rooms and a chapel.
It was an innovation in social care at a time when many workers lived in overcrowded slums. The angel in the stonework above the door was an emblem for the seamen's mission. Much investment has been made to improve the area from The City of Edinburgh District Council, Forth Ports Authority and the Water of Leith Conservation Trust.
The statue to the left is of Sandy Irvine Robertson OBE, wine merchant, charity promoter, founder of Scottish Business Achievement Awards, once wrote of as one of those people who made life worth living. A bear of a man, standing six and a half feet tall, he had a heart the size of Scotland. He was mischievous, often outrageous, but never unkind, and those of us privileged to have known his friendship will be eternally grateful for it. Praise indeed.
Leith is known for its port and red wine imports and I assume he was linked to 'Irvine Robertson Wines' who are located just up the road. After his premature death (Born: 11 August, 1942, in Stirling Died: 20 June, 1999, aged 56), his friends commissioned a bronze statue on the waterfront at Leith. It was sculpted by Lucy Poett. She studied under Cubilt Bevis at The Heatherley School of Art in London and with the late Scott Sutherland RSA in Dundee.

Dating from 1885 the Stalybridge Buffet Bar has retained the original marble-topped bar, back fittings and the welcoming fire.
A dozen years ago it was extended and included the 1st class ladies waiting room with its ornate ceiling, keeping all original features. It's a veritable museum with photographs of the station in it's heyday, railway and other memorabilia. See http://www.stalybridgebuffetbar.co.uk/ to read more about the Buffet Bar.

At the International Exhibition held in London in 1862, Messrs. Cyrus Price and Co., first placed their safes in open competition with the world's leading makers, where the excellent qualities of their Holdfast and Fire-resisting safes and patent locks gained the prize medal awarded for new and special improvements. In 1869 this success was repeated at Wolverhampton, and was followed by an award of the only prize medal at Cardiff in 1888, and a gold medal for second order of merit at Melbourne, 1888-89.
Cyrus Price changed hands and names eventually being renamed Guardian Safe & Steel Furniture Company with a factory at Giggety Bridge, Wombourne before becoming Guardian Safes.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMWPW - A picturesque view of traditional timber framed cottages lining Smithy Lane in the historic village of Great Budworth, Cheshire, England. The row of houses features classic black and white half timbering combined with warm red brickwork, steeply pitched tiled roofs and prominent chimney stacks, all characteristic of vernacular English architecture found in long-established rural settlements. The narrow cobbled lane curves gently through the scene, reinforcing the sense of age and continuity within the village landscape.
Great Budworth is widely regarded as one of Cheshire's best preserved villages, with many buildings dating back several centuries. Smithy Lane retains a strong historic character, shaped by local materials, skilled craftsmanship and incremental development rather than modern planning. The cottages sit close to the roadway, reflecting a period when villages were designed around walking, horses and agricultural life rather than motor traffic. Mature trees, garden planting and soft natural light add to the calm, lived-in quality of the scene.
The image conveys themes of rural tradition, heritage conservation and village life in England. It evokes a slower pace of living and a strong connection between architecture and place, where buildings reflect both social history and the practical needs of earlier rural communities. Such streetscapes are increasingly valued for their cultural significance and as symbols of the English countryside.
This photograph is well suited for editorial use covering rural England, historic villages, heritage architecture, conservation areas and countryside living, as well as commercial applications relating to tourism, travel, housing, heritage publications and representations of traditional English village life.
