Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E91E9G - Exterior view of Hill Dickinson Stadium, Everton Football Club's new home at Bramley-Moore Dock on the Liverpool waterfront. The panoramic photograph shows the modern stadium frontage, vertical brick and dark cladding, wide public realm, club banners and large Hill Dickinson Stadium lettering under a grey dockside sky. The ground was developed as Everton's replacement for Goodison Park and marks one of the most significant stadium moves in English football, relocating the club from its historic inner-city home to a major new venue beside the River Mersey. The official stadium site describes Hill Dickinson Stadium as Everton FC's new home and a year-round destination for major sport, music, entertainment, business and cultural events. The stadium was known during construction as Everton Stadium or Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium before the Hill Dickinson naming rights deal was announced. The site is important not only as a Premier League football ground, but also as a major piece of north Liverpool regeneration, dockland redevelopment and waterfront architecture. It is useful for editorial coverage of Everton FC, football finance, modern stadium design, matchday culture, corporate naming rights, sports-led regeneration, Liverpool Waters, heritage dock redevelopment, the end of the Goodison Park era and the commercial future of top-flight football. The wider project has drawn both excitement and scrutiny, combining fan hopes for a modern home with wider debate about cost, ownership, sponsorship, local economic impact, transport, dock heritage and the changing character of Liverpool's north docks. The stadium is also listed as a future UEFA Euro 2028 host venue, strengthening its value for football tourism, international sport and major event coverage. This image works well for newspapers, football magazines, architectural features, travel guides, urban regeneration reports, sponsorship stories and stock use needing a clear contemporary view of Everton's new dockside stadium

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3E8PTXH - Visitors walk beside the Escapade Silverstone trackside residences at Silverstone Circuit, passing a row of angular contemporary apartments with projecting balconies overlooking the famous motor racing venue. The image shows the distinctive design-led accommodation built into the circuit environment, where motorsport fans can stay close to the track and view racing action from private balconies and hospitality spaces. Escapade Silverstone describes itself as being in the heart of Silverstone and offers one to four-bedroom residences, with trackside options marketed as giving front-row access to the Grand Prix circuit. Its own material says some residences provide views of nine corners and two high-speed straights, while separate Escapade information describes the development as 60 individual residences with a clubhouse, restaurant, bar, gym, pool, sauna and treatment rooms. This photograph is commercially useful for stories about Formula 1, the British Grand Prix, Silverstone hospitality, motorsport tourism, luxury accommodation, race weekend stays, leisure property, sports venue development and the changing visitor economy around major circuits. The walking spectators, bright summer sky, trackside path, modern cladding, glass balconies and repeating architectural forms create a strong editorial image of high-end motorsport accommodation rather than a conventional hotel frontage. It can also illustrate wider themes including experience-led travel, premium event hospitality, sports business, trackside real estate, architectural design at sports venues, destination tourism and how major sporting sites are expanding beyond race-day seating into year-round leisure, dining and overnight stays. The image has particular value for coverage of Silverstone as the home of British motorsport and a major Northamptonshire visitor attraction, showing how spectators, guests and accommodation now sit directly alongside the racing circuit environment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG8YRW - Hale is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Halton, Cheshire, England with a population of 1,800. The village is north of the River Mersey, and just to the east of the boundary with Merseyside. It is 2+1⁄2 miles east of Speke in Liverpool, and 4 miles south-west of Widnes. The nearby village of Halebank is to the north-east.
Historically part of Lancashire, until 1 April 1974 the area formed part of the Whiston Rural District.
The population of the parish is stable with a population of 1,898 (2001 census), 1,841 (2011 census) and 1,800 (2021 census).
John Middleton (15781623), the Childe of Hale, was reputed to be nine feet, three inches tall, or 2.8 m. His cottage and grave are located in the village. Just outside St Mary's Church was a wooden carving of the Childe Of Hale that is said to have been life-sized. It was replaced in 2013 by a 3-metre bronze statue by sculptor Diane Gorvin
Middleton was born in the village of Hale, near Liverpool. According to contemporary accounts and his epitaph, he grew to the height of 9 feet 3 inches (2.82 m) and slept with his feet hanging out the window of his house.
Because of his size the landlord and sheriff of Lancashire, Gilbert Ireland, hired him as a bodyguard. When King James I stopped by in 1617 to knight Ireland he heard about Middleton and invited both of them to the court, which they accepted in 1620. Middleton beat the King's champion in wrestling and in doing so broke the man's thumb. He received £20, a large amount of money in those times. Jealous of his wealth, Middleton's companions mugged him or swindled him out of his money while he was returning to Hale. Middleton died impoverished in 1623. He was buried in the cemetery of St Mary's Church in Hale. The epitaph reads, Here lyeth the bodie of John Middleton the Childe of Hale. Nine feet three. Borne 1578 Dyede 1623. He is likely one of the tallest people in history. If these height markings are accurate, he would surpass Robert Wadlow's stature

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG8YFX - Aviva Studios, the permanent home of Factory International, photographed on Water Street in Manchester city centre, postcode M3 4JQ. The building occupies a prominent position within the St John's regeneration area, close to the River Irwell and the historic former Granada Television studios site, marking a significant phase in Manchester's ongoing urban and cultural redevelopment.
Designed as a highly flexible cultural venue, Aviva Studios accommodates large-scale exhibitions, live music, theatre, dance, and immersive performance, supporting both international productions and UK-based creative work. The bold, angular exterior and industrial-scale form reflect Manchester's post-industrial identity, combining contemporary architectural language with references to the city's manufacturing and broadcasting heritage.
Opened as a flagship investment in the city's cultural infrastructure, Factory International and Aviva Studios play a strategic role in positioning Manchester as a leading European centre for the arts and creative industries. The surrounding public realm and adjacent developments underline wider regeneration ambitions for the St John's district, transforming former brownfield land into a mixed-use cultural and commercial quarter.
The image shows the building in daylight under a blue sky with scattered cloud, highlighting the metallic cladding, sharp lines, and contrasting textures of the façade, with neighbouring high-rise development visible in the background. The photograph documents a key contemporary landmark in modern Manchester and the continuing evolution of the city's built environment.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RC3CKK - The Northern Ireland Housing Executive is the public housing authority for Northern Ireland. It is Northern Ireland's largest social housing landlord, and the enforcing authority for those parts of housing orders that involve houses with multiple occupants, houses that are unfit, and housing conditions. The NIHE employed 2,865 persons as of 31 March 2020
Prior to the establishment of the Housing Executive, public housing in Northern Ireland was managed primarily by local councils. Only ratepayers and their spouses could vote in council elections - sub-tenants, lodgers, and adults living with their parents could not - so allocation of housing was distorted for political ends. This largely took the form of discrimination against Catholics to ensure Unionist control of councils, opposition to which was a major plank of the Northern Ireland civil rights movement of the late 1960s. Following civil disturbances in 196869, a commission appointed by the Northern Ireland government and led by Lord Cameron found that grievances concerning housing were the first general cause of the disorders which it investigated. Lord Cameron's report concluded:
A rising sense of continuing injustice and grievance among large sections of the Catholic population in Northern Ireland, in particular in Derry and Dungannon, in respect of (i) inadequacy of housing provision by certain local authorities (ii) unfair methods of allocation of houses built and let by such authorities, in particular
refusals and omissions to adopt a 'points' system in determining priorities and making allocations (iii) misuse in certain cases of discretionary powers of allocation of houses in order to perpetuate Unionist control of the local authority
The Housing Executive was established by the Housing Executive Act (Northern Ireland) 1971. A single all-purpose housing authority for Northern Ireland had been advocated as early as 1964 by the Northern Ireland Labour Party

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R4WDHN - Battersea Power Station is a decommissioned Grade II* listed coal-fired power station, located on the south bank of the River Thames, in Nine Elms, Battersea, in the London Borough of Wandsworth. It was built by the London Power Company (LPC) to the design of Leonard Pearce, Engineer in Chief to the LPC, and CS Allott & Son Engineers. The architects were J. Theo Halliday and Giles Gilbert Scott. The station is one of the world's largest brick buildings and notable for its original, Art Deco interior fittings and decor.
The building comprises two power stations, built in two stages, in a single building. Battersea A Power Station was built between 1929 and 1935 and Battersea B Power Station, to its east, between 1937 and 1941, when construction was paused owing to the worsening effects of the Second World War. The building was completed in 1955. Battersea B was built to a design nearly identical to that of Battersea A, creating the iconic four-chimney structure.
Battersea A was decommissioned in 1975. In 1980 the whole structure was given Grade II listed status
Battersea B shut three years later. In 2007 its listed status was upgraded to Grade II*. The building remained empty until 2014, during which time it fell into near ruin. Various plans were made to make use of the building, but none were successful. In 2012, administrators Ernst & Young entered into an exclusivity agreement with Malaysia's S P Setia and Sime Darby to develop the site to include 253 residential units, bars, restaurants, office space (occupied by Apple and No. 18 business members club), shops and entertainment spaces. The plans were approved and redevelopment commenced a few years later. As of 2021, the building and the overall 42-acre (17 ha) site development is owned by a consortium of Malaysian investors.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PNRFC4 - Purplebricks is an online estate agent which operates in the UK. Founded in 2012 by Michael Bruce, Kenny Bruce and David Shepherd, it is backed by investors that include venture capital firm DN Capital as well as Neil Woodford, Paul Pindar, and Errol Damelin.
History
Early history
Michael Bruce, Kenny Bruce and David Shepherd conceived their idea for an online estate agency in 2012.Property sales in the United Kingdom had historically been handled by traditional (or high street) estate agencies
Purplebricks' commission-free, hybrid agency business model was intended to disrupt the UK residential property market, and marketing has been a central element of the company's business strategy.
In 2016, Purplebricks began using the tagline commisery, meaning the misery home sellers feel about paying commission, to distinguish itself from traditional real estate agencies. A full advertising campaign about the concept followed the next year, and ran extensively in the UK, US, and Australia. The campaign won an Effectiveness Award from the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising in 2018 for demonstrating proof on payback on marketing communications, as the campaign contributed to a 218 percent growth in revenue.
In 2019, Purplebricks was added to the Superbrands list, which tracks consumer perception of brand and marketing activity. Purplebricks' presence on the list was seen as an indication that the company had established itself as a household name. In 2020, Purplebricks claimed to have achieved 98 percent brand awareness within the UK

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PHEJ62 - Daylight saving time (DST), also referred to as daylight savings time, daylight time (United States, Canada, and Australia), or summer time (United Kingdom, European Union, and others), is the practice of advancing clocks (typically by one hour) during warmer months so that darkness falls at a later clock time. The typical implementation of DST is to set clocks forward by one hour in either the late winter or spring (spring forward), and to set clocks back by one hour in the fall (fall back) to return to standard time. As a result, there is one 23-hour day in early spring and one 25-hour day in the middle of autumn.
The idea of aligning waking hours to daylight hours to conserve candles was first proposed in 1784 by U.S. polymath Benjamin Franklin. In a satirical letter to the editor of The Journal of Paris, Franklin suggested that waking up earlier in the summer would economize on candle usage
and calculated considerable savings
After synchronously resetting all clocks in a region to one hour ahead of standard time, individuals following a clock-based schedule will awaken an hour earlier than they would have otherwiseor rather an hour's worth of darkness earlier
they will begin and complete daily work routines an hour of daylight earlier: they will have available to them an extra hour of daylight after their workday activities. They will have one less hour of daylight at the start of the workday, making the policy less practical during winter.
Proponents of daylight saving time argue that most people prefer a greater increase in daylight hours after the typical nine to five workday. Supporters have also argued that DST decreases energy consumption by reducing the need for lighting and heating, but the actual effect on overall energy use is heavily disputed

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG1W53 - Heptonstall is a small village and civil parish within the Calderdale borough of West Yorkshire, England, historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The population of Heptonstall, including the hamlets of Colden and Slack Top, is 1,448, increasing to 1,470 at the 2011 Census. The town of Hebden Bridge lies directly to the south-east. Although Heptonstall is part of Hebden Bridge as a post town, it is not within the Hebden Royd town boundaries.
The village is on the route of the Calderdale Way, a 50-mile (80 km) circular walk around the hills and valleys of Calderdale
The place-name 'Heptonstall' is first recorded as Heptonstall in the 1274 Wakefield Court Rolls, and in 1316 in the Feudal Aids. The name means the stall or stable in Hebden. The name 'Hebden' means rose-hip dene or valley
Heptonstall was the site of a battle during the early part of the English Civil War in 1643.
Historically a centre for hand-loom weaving, Heptonstall's cottages and terraced houses are characterised by large first-floor windows to maximise the light for weaving
In the mid-1980s the paving on a road through Heptonstall was removed, revealing the original stone setts. Although there was a plan to remove the setts, local protests convinced the council to restore them. At the same time the existing concrete street lights were replaced with late 19th-century cast-iron gas lamps. Both developments acted as a traffic calming measure.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PG92TN - Iceland, officially Iceland Foods Ltd, is a British supermarket chain headquartered in Deeside, Wales. It mainly sells frozen foods, including prepared meals and vegetables, alongside non-frozen grocery items such as produce, meat, dairy and dry goods. The company also operates a chain of shops called The Food Warehouse.
Iceland Foods began business in 1970, when Malcolm Walker opened the first store in Leg Street, Oswestry, Shropshire, England, with his business partner Peter Hinchcliffe. Together, they invested £60 for one month's rent at the store. They were still employees of Woolworths at the time, and their employment was terminated once their employer discovered their other roles. Iceland Foods initially specialised in loose frozen food. In 1977, they opened a store in Manchester selling own-labelled packaged food, and by 1978 the company had 28 stores.
In 1983, the business grew by purchasing the 18 stores of Bristol-based St. Catherine's Freezer Centres, and in 1984 the business went public for the first time. The cash investment was used to purchase South East-based Orchard Frozen Foods in 1986, and the purchase of larger rival Bejam in 1988. In 1993, the firm took over the food halls of the Littlewoods department store and also acquired the French Au Gel chain. This last move proved unsuccessful and the stores were dropped within a year
In 2019, Iceland Foods opened 45 new stores in the UK (including 31 larger stores under The Food Warehouse fascia) but had also closed eight, increasing the number of UK stores to 942. The company has a strategic alliance with The Range, where Iceland's food offer has been introduced to nine of the home and garden retailer's stores. In 2019 it also expanded its warehousing locations, adding five multi-temperature regional distribution centres at Livingston, Warrington, Deeside, Enfield and Swindon

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2N482TN - How NHS bowel cancer screening scheme works, in the UK
You will be sent an invitation letter with information about bowel cancer screening. The information is to help you decide whether to take part. Then we send you a faecal immunochemical test, or FIT kit' for short. It detects blood in your poo (blood you would not notice by eye). We look for blood because polyps and bowel cancers sometimes bleed. Finding blood does not diagnose bowel cancer but it means you need further tests (usually a bowel examination).
Most people's screening result shows they do not need any further tests.
Some people will need further tests. If this is the case for you, we will offer you an appointment to talk about having a colonoscopy. Colonoscopy looks at the inside of your bowel. We use colonoscopy to find the source of the blood.
You use the FIT kit in the privacy of your home. It's a simple way to collect a tiny sample of poo. The kit (pictured below) is a small plastic bottle with a stick attached inside the lid. You use the stick to collect the sample, which you seal into the bottle. There are instructions with each kit.
Once used, you post the kit in its prepaid packaging to a laboratory for processing. Using the kit takes just a few minutes and it's an easy and effective way to screen for early bowel cancer.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M95NM7 - The entrance gates to the Sailors' Home were elaborate decorative pieces of ironwork which served the dual purpose of protecting the Savings Bank and keeping out seamen who might wish to gain entry to the Home after the strict 10 pm curfew.
By April 1852 the lower sections of the gates had been installed, decorated with a combination of elements from the interior balconies
four great panels of rope-work with central mermaid and trident figures identical to those inside. The two outer panels were fixed whilst the two centre sections rolled behind them on rails where they were hidden from sight while the Home was open for business.
The iron-work of the lower gates, produced a solid, intimidating aspect compared with the much lighter appearance of the balcony railings. The huge mass of iron made an impassable barrier but also a massive weight and it would have taken some effort to slide the gates open and close.
1852: An Unfortunate Death of Mary Ann Price
1907: The Tragic Death of Constable Locke
In the Annals of the Sailors' Home, printed in the Home's annual report for the year 1935, against the year 1907 was the following entry: November - Police Officer Locke killed through front gate falling upon him.
Early on the morning of Sunday 24 November, nearly an hour after midnight, Police constable number 324A, Brownlow Locke, of the Liverpool City Constabulary, met his death in a very strange and unexpected manner.
1951: The Gates Move to Their New Home in Sandwell
As part of the repair to War Damage following the Liverpool Blitz it was decided to remove the gates. On 25 March 1948 W & T Avery who had swallowed-up Pooley's and Sons were offered the gates by the Sailors' Home Committee. On 18 May 1949 Avery's made an offer of 50 guineas for the gates, which was accepted on 3 May. 1951.
The home was demolished between 1974-1975. After refurbishment at Barr & Grosvenor Ltd's foundry Wolverhampton, the gates were returned to the Liverpool One shopping developmet

Gamesley is a ward of the High Peak Borough Council. It had a population of 2,531 at the 2011 Census
The original village of Gamesley consisted of rows of cottages inhabited by workers at the local textile mills, and it remained largely undeveloped until the 1960s, when it underwent considerable change. It was chosen as the location of an overspill estate, built by Manchester City Council. This was in order to rehouse people from decaying inner city areas of Manchester. These housing areas were also built in other towns surrounding Manchester, such as nearby Hattersley on the outskirts of Hyde.
The Gamesley estate was built in 2 half's. The first houses were built by contractors Finnegans which were constructed with
flat felted roofs, pebble dash cladding ground floors and tile cladded first floors. Finnegans houses were equipped with warm air central heating which used gas as an energy source. The Finnegan side of the estate was known locally as the gas side'. In the late 1980s the local authority renovated the Finnegan system built houses, the works included re-enveloping the external building with traditional bricks and mortar. The works also added apex roofing complete with roofing tiles.
The second half of the Gamesley estate was built a couple of years later by George Wimpey using the Wimpey no-fines house building method. The houses were constructed with full pebble dash finish and tiled apex roofing. The houses built by George Wimpey had a solid concrete ground floor which had electrical underfloor heating installed, the first floors of these houses were built with no heating. Due to electricity being the main energy source for heating, the George Wimpey side of Gamesley became known locally as the electric side'.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JTRT3W - Strangeways, Here We Come is the fourth and final studio album by English rock band the Smiths. It was released on 28/09/1987 by Rough Trade Records, several months after the group had disbanded. All of the songs were composed by Johnny Marr, with lyrics written and sung by Morrissey.
The album reached number two on the UK Albums Chart, staying in the chart for 17 weeks. The album also became an international success, peaking at number 16 in the European Albums Chart
from sales covering the 18 major European countries, staying in that chart for nine weeks. The album was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry on 1 October 1987 and also by the Recording Industry Association of America on 19 September 1990
The album takes its title from Manchester's notorious Strangeways Prison (now called HM Prison Manchester), whilst the line Borstal, here we come is taken from the novel Billy Liar. Strangeways, of course, is that hideous Victorian monstrosity of a prison operating 88 to a cell, Morrissey has said

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JRM39K - Blackpool Heritage Trams are a mixed fleet of restored vehicles that run on the Blackpool Tramway, which runs from Blackpool to Fleetwood on the Fylde Coast in Lancashire, England. The line dates back to 1885 and is one of the oldest electric tramways in the world.[1] It is operated by Blackpool Transport (BT) and is the last surviving first-generation tramway in the United Kingdom. Excluding museums, it is one of only a few tramways in the world to still use double-decker trams.
Most services on the line are now operated by a fleet of modern Bombardier Flexity 2 trams, but a Heritage Tram service using the traditional trams operates on Bank Holidays, select weekdays and weekends from January to December, as well as during the Blackpool Illuminations.
The Heritage fleet is a large fleet of vehicles that were mainly retained from previous generations of the town's tramway operations, as well as some from other locations. They are now operated by Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours between Pleasure Beach and North Pier as standard and can be caught at the 'Heritage Tram Tours' stops, identifiable by a green circular sign.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JWB54C - Moore is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Halton, Cheshire, England, located midway between Runcorn and Warrington. It has a population of 807.
Etymology
The name 'Moore' comes from the Old English word mor, meaning 'moor, or fen'. The village's earliest recording was as Mora, some time in the 12th century.
History
Moore is the site of a disused railway station named Daresbury. The railway station was opened in 1850 and was located on the south side of Runcorn Road. The station was closed to passengers in 1952 and closed completely in 1965. The platforms and ramps down from road are still visible from Runcorn Road. The railway station was situated on the Birkenhead Joint Railway close to Warrington and in the village of Moore. The railway station was the second to open in the village. The first railway station which was very close by was part of the Grand Junction Railway which opened on 4 July 1837. Moore was a second class station at which a First Class train would not stop. The engineer for the northern half of the new railway was Joseph Locke who became a famous as a railway engineer. The date of closure of Moore railway station is uncertain. Daresbury railway station was initially called Moore but the name was changed to Daresbury in April 1861 taking its name from a village a mile or so away.
The area of Moore to the north of the West Coast Main Line and west of Moss Lane was designated as part of Runcorn New Town in 1964 and the land allocated to industry. The New Town Masterplan was amended in 1975 to reduce the amount of industrial land around the village and to create a green buffer between it and what would become Manor Park Industrial Estate

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JNBYC2 - Chipping Campden is a market town in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England. It is notable for its terraced High Street, dating from the 14th century to the 17th century. (Chipping is from Old English cēping, 'market', 'market-place'
the same element is found in other towns such as Chipping Norton, Chipping Sodbury and Chipping (now High) Wycombe.)
A wool trading centre in the Middle Ages, Chipping Campden enjoyed the patronage of wealthy wool merchants, most notably William Greville (d.1401). The High Street is lined with buildings built from locally quarried oolitic limestone known as Cotswold stone, and boasts a wealth of vernacular architecture. Much of the town centre is a conservation area which has helped to preserve the original buildings. The town is an end point of the Cotswold Way, a 102-mile long-distance footpath.
Chipping Campden has hosted its own Olympic Games since 1612.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JBXJMP - The Halliwell Jones Stadium is a rugby league stadium in Warrington, England, which is the home ground of the Warrington Wolves. It has also staged Challenge Cup semi-finals, the European Nations Final, the National League Grand Finals' Day, two games of the 2013 Rugby League World Cup and four games of the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. It is the 62nd largest stadium in England.
Ground was broke at the new site in 2002 and bucked the common trend of modern stadia by including terracing areas rather than being an all-seater stadium, with the South and West stands both containing terracing It also has enormous pitch dimensions of 120 m x 74 m, as requested by Warrington's head coach of the time, Paul Cullen, due to his desire to play expansive rugby. The stadium officially opened in 2004
On 3 March 2011, the club announced that the corners of the East Stand at the stadium would be filled in to create a further 2,000 spaces made up of seating and terracing for the 2012 season. The stadium capacity, set at 15,000 for the first sell-out home match against St. Helens in 2012, was increased to 15,200 and can grow to 15,693 as the club proves it can handle the bigger crowds and get extra safety certificates. The club has also announced plans to increase the stadium's capacity to around 22,000 should the need arise.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3T3CM - Its turned out nice again for the former Warrington home of legendary entertainer George Formby.
Hillcrest House, in Walton Road, Stockton Heath, where ukulele playing George once lived with his dad also an entertainer has been refurbished and has become a small business centre run by Warrington-based Purple Accounts.
The house was the Formby family home from 1917 and it was from there that George launched his show business career. It had a brief existence as a boutique hotel, which opened in 2013, when it was also recognised with a blue plaque.
Now it has been comprehensively and sympathetically refurbished by the owner but is still filled with iconic images of Formby, who was at one time credited with being the highest-paid star in UK show business.
There's even a replica of the No 14 motorbike that Formby rode in his 1939 movie No Limits based on the TT races in the Isle of Man where, coincidentally, the first Purple Accounts office opened in 2007.
The new small business centre based at George Formby's House was officially opened by Warrington South MP Andy Carter,
The Purple Accounts small business centre helps small businesses with compliance services such as accounts, tax, book-keeping and payroll
George Formby, OBE (born George Hoy Booth
26 May 1904 6 March 1961) was an English actor, singer-songwriter and comedian who became known to a worldwide audience through his films of the 1930s and 1940s. On stage, screen and record he sang light, comic songs, usually playing the ukulele or banjolele, and became the United Kingdom's highest-paid entertainer.
Born in Wigan, Lancashire, he was the son of George Formby Sr, from whom he later took his stage name. After an early career as a stable boy and jockey, Formby took to the music hall stage after the early death of his father in 1921
The media historian Brian McFarlane writes that on film, Formby portrayed gormless Lancastrian innocents who would win through against some form of villainy, gain

The minuscule home was created in the 16th century and remained in use until 1900, when the tenant was a 6-foot-3-inch (1.91 m) fisherman named Robert Jones. The rooms were too small for him to stand up in fully and he was eventually forced to move out when the council declared the house unfit for human habitation, along with a number of properties. The house is still owned by his descendants, having been passed to female relatives since Robert's sons showed a lack of interest in the business.
After some persuasion by the then editor of the North Wales Weekly News, Roger Dawson (the owner) and the editor toured the United Kingdom in order to declare the house The Smallest House in Great Britain, a status that was later confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records.
The house has a floor area of 3.05 by 1.8 metres (10.0 by 5.9 ft) and is painted red. It stands near the Conwy Castle walls. The ground floor is devoted to the living area with room for coal and an open fire, and a water tap tucked behind the stairs. The upstairs holds the cramped bedroom, which also comes with a small niche for storage.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K3XN9B - Standalone audio stereo FM tuners are sought after for audiophile and TV/FM DX applications, especially those produced in the 1970s and early 1980s, when performance and manufacturing standards were among the highest. In many instances the tuner may be modified to improve performance. Electronics specialists and hobbyists buy, collect and restore vintage FM or AM/FM audio tuners on the secondary market. The restoration usually begins with replacing the electrolytic capacitors that may age over time. The tuner is outfitted with improved tolerance and better sounding upgraded parts. Prices have increased relative to the increasing demand for the older audio tuners. Those with the most value are the best sounding, most rare (collectible), the best DX capable (distance reception) and the known build quality of the component, as it left the factory.
Most of the early tuner models were designed and manufactured to receive only the AM broadcast band. As FM became more popular, the limitations of AM became more apparent, and FM became the primary listening focus, especially for stereo and music broadcasting.
The McIntosh MR78 is known as one of the first FM tuners precise enough to tune into a weaker station broadcast on the same frequency as another stronger signal.
In Europe, where a second AM broadcast band is used for longwave broadcasting, tuners may be fitted with both the standard medium wave and the additional longwave band. However, radios with only medium wave are also common, especially in countries where there are no longwave broadcasters. Rarely, radios are sold with only FM and longwave, but no medium wave band. Some tuners may also be equipped with one or more short wave bands.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy PCTAF5 - Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, (27 January 1832 14 January 1898), better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English writer of world-famous children's fiction, notably Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass. He was noted for his facility at word play, logic and fantasy. The poems Jabberwocky and The Hunting of the Snark are classified in the genre of literary nonsense. He was also a mathematician, photographer and Anglican deacon.
Carroll came from a family of High Church Anglicans, and developed a long relationship with Christ Church, Oxford, where he lived for most of his life as a scholar and teacher. It was the Dean of Christ Church, Henry Liddell, whose daughter Alice is widely identified as the original for Alice in Wonderland, though Carroll always denied this.
Several aspects of Carroll's life appear to confirm suspicions that he was a pedophile, though scholars have also made a credible case in his defence. In the absence of hard evidence, the issue of Carroll's hidden private life has provoked a lively debate, especially in recent times.
Dodgson was born in the small parsonage at Daresbury in Cheshire near the towns of Warrington and Runcorn, the eldest boy but already the third child of the four-and-a-half-year-old marriage. Eight more children followed. When Charles was 11, his father was given the living of Croft-on-Tees in North Yorkshire, and the whole family moved to the spacious rectory. This remained their home for the next 25 years.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P8DCT4 - The William Nuttall Cottage Homes are a good example of a planned development by a charitable benefactor, the sweet manufacturer William Nuttall. He set up a trust to provide 'cottage homes for aged spinsters' and the William Nuttall Trust purchased land in Bennetthorpe from the council on which to build these homes. The almshouses were erected in 1930, until then the area between Bennetthorpe and the racecourse had been relatively undeveloped.
The cottage homes were laid out in the pattern of traditional almshouses of standard size set in communal grounds. The buildings comprise a symmetrical group of 24 two storey homes at the centre of which is a linked terrace of eight dwellings around a central archway. To each side are four pairs of homes, each advancing forwards. The buildings are of red engineering brick with stone and concrete dressings and have either 'Rosemary' plain clay tile or Westmoreland slate roofs. The buildings are not identical but have common features and display typical detailing and materials of the inter-war period. The whole site was bounded by a low brick wall with a central vehicular access and symmetrical pedestrian side access.
The William Nuttall Cottage Homes development remains relatively unchanged and continues to have the use for which it was originally intended. Within the conservation area there are no listed structures but all the buildings are considered to be key unlisted buildings.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P110KN - Drinking alcohol alone is an activity that can herald the presence of a dependence and increasing tolerance to the drink. Some people enjoy the freedom associated with going out by themselves and socializing over a drink or two. Others enjoy drinking at home by themselves and find that alcohol helps them to relax and sleep. These kinds of behaviors can indicate that a person is self-medicating problems or issues that they do not want to face. They may be having problems with family members, friends or at work, and need alcohol to help them forget what is going on. A person could also suffer from a mental illness or social anxiety and need alcohol to help them to socialize without realizing that they are becoming dependent.
A person may also begin to drink by themselves because they do not want people to question the amount or frequency of alcohol that they are drinking. A person who hides their drinking from others should be questioning why they are doing it are they ashamed or feeling guilty of their drinking? Do friends and family tell them that they drink too much? Why do they want to be drunk alone? A person who drinks alone is putting themselves at risk of developing a substance abuse problem and of increasing the problems they are facing. They are isolating themselves from others, magnifying problems with friends and family and denying that they have a problem.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy MM99Y9 - Chatelherault Country Park is a country park in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Its name is derived from the French town of Châtellerault, the title Duc de Châtellerault having been granted to James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran in 1548 for his part in arranging the marriage of Mary, Queen of Scots, to Francis, Dauphin of France.
The country park is centred on the former hunting lodge, a folly designed to be seen from the now demolished Hamilton Palace at the end of a broad grass slope forming an avenue with lines of lime trees. The lodge was designed by William Adam and completed in 1734. It comprises two buildings, linked by a gateway, in the form of four pavilions above a garden wall. The north facade was visible from the palace and forms the front of the building. To the rear are formal parterre gardens. The buildings provided kennels, stables and accommodation for hunting parties returning from the woodlands to the south. Adam jokingly referred to his creation as 'The Dogg Kennel'

In its later years, the company began to expand into furniture, electronics, entertainment, convenience groceries and fragrance and beauty products.
The company was founded in 1928 by a group of U.S. entrepreneurs, and had a total of 163 stores mainly located in high streets or shopping centres by the time of its closure in 2016, as well as 74 international stores across 18 separate territories.
BHS was previously a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index, but was bought by Sir Philip Green in 2000 and taken private. The company became part of Green's Arcadia Group in 2009. Following a number of loss-making years, the company was sold to the consortium Retail Acquisitions Ltd led by the serial bankrupt Dominic Chappell, in March 2015 for the nominal price of £1.
In April 2016, 13 months after the purchase by Retail Acquisitions, the company entered administration following unsuccessful attempts to continue trading. It was eventually wound down, and all stores were closed by late August 2016 following failed attempts to find a buyer. The overseas franchises and digital business were sold during the administration period to Al Mana Group, who closed down the website in June 2018

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R5PP7G - This image shows a costumed butler welcoming guests into the formal dining room at Dunham Massey, a National Trust country house in Cheshire. The room is laid for dinner, with a long table dressed in white linen, place settings, and period tableware, recreating the atmosphere of upper-class domestic life in a historic English estate.
Dunham Massey was the former seat of the Earls of Stamford and is now preserved by the National Trust as an important example of a British country house and estate. The interiors reflect centuries of social history, including the rigid hierarchy and rituals associated with domestic service in aristocratic households.
Interpretation staff dressed in period costume play a key role in helping visitors understand how rooms such as this would have been used, bringing social history to life through storytelling and visual context. The presence of the butler highlights the contrast between the grandeur of formal dining and the labour required behind the scenes to maintain it.
Photographed in warm interior lighting, the image emphasises the richness of the wood-panelled room, traditional furnishings, and historic décor. It is well suited for editorial use covering British heritage, National Trust properties, social history, historic interiors, and visitor engagement at stately homes.

'Street Life' is the opening track of Roxy Music's third album Stranded, their first album with Eddie Jobson. He replaced the mighty Brian Eno. It was released as a single in the UK in November 1973 and reached number 9 on the charts.
Def Leppard covered 'Street Life' on their album Yeah!. Morrissey also performed the song during some European festival dates during his 2006 tour.
There are quite a few good Roxy compilations around. Check one out to hear more from this excellent band.

I met this chap in Leeds, just outside the city centre. He struck up a conversation while wheeling along his bike. He was very well spoken and told me he slept under the M261, which scoops around the town. Its pretty dry under there, but will be bitterly cold as a chill wind blows through.
I left him the change in my pocket, it was too late to go and buy him something to eat, which I would have preferred. I notice often that beggers are getting fussy. They prefer unopened sandwiches that can be sold on etc.
If you have an iPhone, checkout the free iHobo app. This gives a good view of what its like to be homeless and on the street. At the end you can also donate to DePaul UK.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CF23TD - Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire, England, is one of the best preserved textile mills of the Industrial Revolution and is now a museum of the cotton industry. It is a Grade II listed building and is now in the care of the National Trust.
The mill was founded by Samuel Greg (who is represented here), in 1784 in the village of Styal on the River Bollin. Its original iron water wheel was designed by Thomas Hewes and built between 1816 and 1820.
The Hewes wheel finally broke in 1904. After that the River Bollin continued to power the mill, through two water turbines. Today the Mill is home to the most powerful working waterwheel in Europe, an iron water wheel which was originally at Glasshouses Mill at Patley Bridge. This wheel was designed by Sir William Fairbairn, the Scottish engineer who had been an apprentice of Thomas Hewes.
The estate surrounding the mill, also developed by Greg, is the most complete and least altered factory colony of the Industrial Revolution. The estate and mill were donated to the National Trust in 1939 by Alexander Carlton Greg and are open to the public. The mill continued in commercial production until 1959.
The Greg family were Unitarians and built Norcliffe Chapel in Styal village. Their non-conformist religious beliefs provided the Gregs with important business contacts as many of the major Manchester Industrialists were Unitarian. Methodist workers at the mill later sought a place of worship, and the Gregs converted a grain store in Styal village into a Chapel for their use.
In Britain, a cotton mill is a factory that houses spinning and weaving machinery. Typically built between 1775 and 1930, mills spun cotton which was an important product during the Industrial Revolution.
Cotton mills, and the mechanisation of the spinning process, were instrumental in the growth of the machine tool industry, enabling the construction of larger cotton mills. The requirement for water helped stimulate the construction of the canal system too.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMWKF - The Millennium Stadium (Welsh: Stadiwm y Mileniwm) is the national stadium of Wales, located in the capital, Cardiff. It is the home of the Wales national rugby union team and also frequently stages games of the Wales national football team, but is also host to many other large scale events, such as the Super Special Stage of Wales Rally Great Britain, Speedway Grand Prix of Great Britain, boxing and many music concerts, including Tina Turner, Madonna, The Rolling Stones, U2, Stereophonics, Paul McCartney, and the Tsunami Relief concert. It was built to host the 1999 Rugby World Cup.
The Millennium Stadium is owned by Millennium Stadium plc which is a subsidiary company of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU). The stadium was designed by a team led by architects Bligh Lobb Sports Architecture, who merged to become HOK Sport Venue Event, which would be renamed Populous in early 2009. WS Atkins were the structural engineers, and the building contractor was Laing. The total construction cost of the stadium was £121 million, of which the Millennium Commission funded £46 million.
The stadium opened in June 1999, and the first major event to be held was an international rugby union match on 26 June 1999, when Wales beat South Africa in a friendly by 2919, before a test crowd of 29,000. With total seating capacity of 74,500, it is the third largest stadium in the Six Nations Championship behind the Stade de France and Twickenham, which is the largest. It is also the second largest stadium in the world with a fully retractable roof and was the second stadium in Europe to have this feature

More about 'The Big Issue'...
The Big Issue is a street newspaper published in eight countries
it is written by professional journalists and sold by homeless individuals. It was founded by John Bird and Gordon Roddick in September 1991. The Big Issue is one of the UK's leading social businesses and exists to offer homeless people the opportunity to earn a legitimate income, thereby helping them to reintegrate into mainstream society. It is also the world's most widely circulated street newspaper.
To become a vendor, one must be homeless or vulnerably housed or marginalised in some way. The Big Issue recognises, however, that for many people, being housed is only the first stage in getting off the streets
therefore, The Big Issue Foundation exists to support vendors in gaining control of their lives by tackling the various issues which lead to homelessness.
The Big Issue has been described as one of the most successful street newspapers worldwide, selling over 300,000 copies a week and listed as the third-favourite newspaper of young British people (age 15 to 24) in 2001.
There are 5 localised editions of the magazine sold throughout the United Kingdom and vendors buy The Big Issue for 85p[7] and sell it for \u00a31.70. The magazine is also produced and sold in Australia, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, Japan, Namibia, Kenya, Malawi and Taiwan. All vendors receive training, sign a code of conduct] and can be identified by badges which include their photo and vendor number

Several people here are on the run from court, wives and husbands and don't want their images recorded. That's ok with me, if they believe or not that I will respect their wishes.

She is paid from 10am to 10pm, but often adds another 3-4 hours to that each day.
Commanding respect, she knits the shoestring winter night shelter together, finding silver linings in grey clouds. Without her the shelter would not exist.
She hopes next year the local borough council will fund a permanent night shelter.
Even if they do, she will most likely put as much effort.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CET1GE - Here shown at dusk, Warrington Town Hall is in the town of Warrington, Cheshire, England.
It consists of a house, originally called Bank Hall, flanked by two detached service wings at right angles to the house, one on each side. The house and the service wings are each designated by English Heritage as Grade I listed buildings.
At the time the house was built Warrington was in the historic county of Lancashire. The architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner declared it to be the finest house of its date in south Lancashire
Bank Hall was built in 1750 for Thomas Patten. The architect was James Gibbs and it is likely that it was the last important building of his design to be completed in his lifetime. When it was built it stood in open countryside to the north of the town of Warrington.
The Patten family were important merchants in the town. Thomas' father had made the lower River Mersey navigable from Runcorn to Bank Quay, Warrington, and had established a copper smelting factory at Bank Quay. In 1870 John Wilson-Patten, 1st Baron Winmarleigh, sold the hall to Warrington Borough Council for £9000 (£640,000 as of 2013), and 13 acres (5.3 ha) of surrounding land for a further £15,000 (£1,060,000 as of 2013).
Almost all of the land was opened as Warrington's first public park in 1873. When the house was built, it was surrounded by a high wall. In 1895 this was replaced by iron railings and a fine set of gates.
