Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM9906 - A tight, documentary close-up of a retail shop window promotion in Manchester during November, dominated by bold illuminated text reading BLACK FRIDAY EVENT and UP TO 30% OFF. The typography is clean and high-contrast, designed for instant legibility from the pavement, with the bright lettering standing out against a dark background that suggests evening or indoor low-light conditions. To the left edge of the frame, a large display figure or mannequin is partially visible, hinting at a curated in-store visual merchandising setup without revealing a specific brand identity. Reflections and glossy surfaces add a modern, commercial feel, reinforcing the physical, bricks-and-mortar shopping context rather than online retail.
The image is well suited to editorial and commercial themes around seasonal discounting, high street promotions, consumer behaviour, and the annual Black Friday sales cycle in the UK. It can illustrate stories about retail footfall, marketing tactics, price-led campaigns, and pre-Christmas shopping activity, as well as broader business coverage of the retail economy and consumer spending trends. The clear, readable wording makes it highly searchable and immediately usable as a generic visual for Black Friday, sale events, and in-store discount messaging in a British city setting.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 3DM97X3 - A documentary indoor view of a full-size Halloween mummy figure on display inside Stockport Market, photographed as part of seasonal autumn decorations. The prop is a stylised, cartoonishly frightening mummy with bandage-like wrapping, an exaggerated facial expression and exposed skeletal details, standing upright on a metal base. The setting reads clearly as an indoor public venue or market environment, with shuttered stall panels, painted trim and practical fixtures visible around the edges of the frame, including fire extinguishers and wall notices that add a recognisable working building context rather than a staged studio scene.
The image suits editorial and commercial themes around Halloween as a UK seasonal event, market-led promotions, and how town-centre venues use themed displays to attract families and increase footfall during October and half-term. The composition is straightforward and readable, making it useful as a general illustration for Halloween decorations, spooky-season retail, community events, and indoor seasonal marketing in British towns. The indoor lighting and everyday background details help anchor the photograph in real-world place and activity, giving it value for documentary coverage of local markets and seasonal public programming.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGHT7 - This image shows a canal boat in the foreground at Northwich Quay Marina, located on London Road in Northwich, Cheshire. The wide view across the marina reveals multiple narrowboats and leisure craft moored around the basin, with still water creating clear reflections of boats, trees, and surrounding buildings.
The photograph was taken in daylight under partly cloudy skies, with soft light and broken cloud cover enhancing the reflective surface of the water. The presence of a canal boat in the immediate foreground adds depth and visual interest, drawing the viewer into the scene and emphasising the scale and calmness of the marina.
Northwich Quay Marina is a popular destination for leisure boaters and visitors, providing access to the River Weaver navigation and the wider UK canal network. The marina sits close to the town centre, combining waterside recreation with nearby shops, caf??s, and walking routes.
The image captures a tranquil and attractive aspect of British canal life, appealing to tourists, boating enthusiasts, and those interested in slow travel, heritage waterways, and waterside regeneration in England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2REGJ48 - This image shows the exterior of a Barrhead Travel branch located at 31 Leicester Street in Northwich town centre, Cheshire. The travel agency occupies a modern glass-fronted retail unit, with prominent white Barrhead Travel signage mounted across the facade, clearly identifying the business.
The photograph appears to have been taken in late-day or early evening light, with warm reflections visible in the glass frontage and surrounding paving. The clean architectural lines and contemporary materials reflect recent high-street retail design, contrasting with older town-centre buildings visible through reflections.
Barrhead Travel is a major UK travel retailer, offering holiday packages, cruises, flights, and travel services to consumers. Physical branches such as this remain an important part of the travel sector, providing face-to-face advice and booking services alongside online platforms.
The image documents everyday commercial life on a UK high street, capturing the presence of national retail brands within regional town centres and the continuing role of travel agencies in the tourism and leisure economy.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R64KX0 - The MV Royal Iris of the Mersey is a Mersey Ferry in operation on the River Mersey, England. From launch in Devon in 1959 until a major refurbishment in 2001, she was named MV Mountwood.
MV Mountwood
The Mountwood was the slightly older sister ship of the MV Woodchurch. Both of the ferries were built for the Corporation of Birkenhead to replace the existing fleet of 1930s steamers. The designs of the two new vessels were loosely based on the ferries Leasowe and Egremont of the Wallasey Corporation
they were designed by the same company, Graham and Woolnough, and were built at the same shipyard, Messrs. Philip and Sons Ltd. of Dartmouth. Mountwood was launched by Mrs Hugh Platt on 6 July 1959 into the River Dart, and after being fitted out was delivered to the Mersey in 1960. She was named after an overspill post-war housing development of Birkenhead.
The Mountwood and her identical sister Woodchurch originally had bright orange funnels with a black base and black soot buffer. On the main deck, there was a forward, heated shelter and also a main saloon, aft of this was the toilets and machine space. Below was a saloon bar. On the top deck was a large open promenade and a forward shelter beneath the bridge, although this shelter was open beneath the bridge so it was often breezy and cold. They had a main central wheelhouse and two side cabs, and power came from two medium speed Crossley 8-cylinder diesel engines.
In 2001, the Mountwood was withdrawn and taken to Birkenhead's former Cammell Laird shipyard (which became owned by A&P), and then to Clarence graving docks, where she was stripped of her fittings and parts of her superstructure were removed and rebuilt. Unfortunately the ferry remained dormant for some time due to problems at the shipyard. She was then re-engined and rebuilt. Noticeable changes were the addition of a new, angle fronted, large wheelhouse and bridge deck, plus her funnel, which was reinstated after the refit, was moved further back

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RG1W53 - Heptonstall is a small village and civil parish within the Calderdale borough of West Yorkshire, England, historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The population of Heptonstall, including the hamlets of Colden and Slack Top, is 1,448, increasing to 1,470 at the 2011 Census. The town of Hebden Bridge lies directly to the south-east. Although Heptonstall is part of Hebden Bridge as a post town, it is not within the Hebden Royd town boundaries.
The village is on the route of the Calderdale Way, a 50-mile (80 km) circular walk around the hills and valleys of Calderdale
The place-name 'Heptonstall' is first recorded as Heptonstall in the 1274 Wakefield Court Rolls, and in 1316 in the Feudal Aids. The name means the stall or stable in Hebden. The name 'Hebden' means rose-hip dene or valley
Heptonstall was the site of a battle during the early part of the English Civil War in 1643.
Historically a centre for hand-loom weaving, Heptonstall's cottages and terraced houses are characterised by large first-floor windows to maximise the light for weaving
In the mid-1980s the paving on a road through Heptonstall was removed, revealing the original stone setts. Although there was a plan to remove the setts, local protests convinced the council to restore them. At the same time the existing concrete street lights were replaced with late 19th-century cast-iron gas lamps. Both developments acted as a traffic calming measure.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PH9M0F - In 1883 Robert Clare Baxter was born. He was a remarkable businessman who was behind the huge success of Clare's Department Store. Robert Clare Baxter was born into a poor family in Runcorn and started off working in a drapers at the weekend. He was later promoted to buyer and manager and the owner then helped him set up his own business.
In the early 20th century Clare's premises were occupied by Arthurs Pioneer Stores. Arthurs was taken over by WS Williams of Llanrwst who also owned the Loyal Store on the opposite side of Mostyn St. One of the shops 'main features was the variety of serge's and tweeds spun at Williams own factory in Dolgellau. These could be made up into whatever the customer required ? particulary boating, cycling and touring outfits for the ladies.
Clare's Department Store was established in 1927 by the Baxter family. Quickly built a reputation within the community for offering good, friendly reliable service to all their customers. Robert Clare Baxter rebuilt it as the present Clare's Department Store. It became a ladies dressmakers and milliners allowing customers to have access to a respectable fashion store.
When Robert Baxter died, the business was taken over by his son Dougie and grandchildren John and Ann. The business was passed down and continued to operate as a family business. It remained successful and was continually growing and thriving.
Clare's Department Store was acquired by Ulster Stores in 2002. It was instantly recognised as an exciting opportunity for the future. The store is a well known destination not only for local shoppers but also for the many tourists who visit Llandudno. When Ulster Stores took over the Lamson Pneumatic Device was removed. This whizzed payment by tubes to the cash office and sent back the change. You can still see the original office windows at the back of the GF.
Clares has changed over the years and moved with the times and customers.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PH9M5M - Currys (branded as Currys PC World between 2010 and 2021) is an electrical retailer and aftercare service provider operating in the United Kingdom and Ireland, specialising in white goods, consumer electronics, computers and mobile phones.
Established as a bicycle retailer in 1927, Currys expanded the range of goods sold and from the 1960s became a major retailer of household electrical items. In 1984 the company was bought by rival retailer Dixons, and the Currys brand was used for all outlets of the combined company. From 2008, the business turned away from shops in town centres to larger out-of-town stores under the Currys PC World brand, combining the operations of Currys with Dixon's PC World under one roof
after the formation of Dixons Carphone in 2014, the stores gained Carphone Warehouse departments. It was announced in July 2021 that all Currys PC World stores would be rebranded to Currys.
Dixons Retail began a trial combining Currys and PC World shops in 2008. During the Dixons Carphone Christmas 2015?2016 results update to shareholders, Sebastian James, group chief executive, revealed that over the following financial year the three-in-one shop format (shops featuring Currys, PC World and Carphone Warehouse branding under one roof) would be rolled out across the company's entire portfolio in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
Following reorganisations in 2020 and 2021, Dixons Carphone announced that the Currys PC World stores would be rebranded to Currys in October 2021

Venue Cymru is a theatre, conference centre and arena in Llandudno, Conwy County Borough, North Wales. Formerly known as the Aberconwy Centre and the North Wales Theatre and Conference Centre, it is now a large arts, conference and events venue. Venue Cymru has a theatre, conference centre, and arena.
In 1900 it was renamed the Llandudno Opera House. It hosted the Carl Rosa Opera Company.
It was renamed as the Hippodrome, and was used as a roller-skating rink, a dance hall and for summer shows
The theatre was purchased by Will Catlin on 3 June 1916. It was renamed as the Arcadia. The theatre had 1,147 seats, and was one of six theatres in Llandudno to last for many years. It was the home of Catlin's Peirrots and Catlin's Showtime. Ken Dodd was a regular performer
It closed on 22 June 1994, and was derelict for the next decade, before being demolished in July 2005
The Aberconwy Centre opened to the west of the Arcadia theatre in 1982. The conference venue had space for over 1,000 conference attendees. It was redeveloped in 1994, and it was renamed as the North Wales Theatre and Conference Centre. It hosted a 1,500-seat auditorium/theatre, as well as a 700 square metres (7,500 sq ft) conference hall with capacity for 800 seated, or 1,000 standing, people
In July 2005 the Arcadia theatre was demolished to make way for an atrium and meeting and conference rooms adjoining the North Wales Theatre and Conference Centre. The building was also extended to the west. After the redevelopment, the venue hosted a new 1,550 square metres (16,700 sq ft) arena, capable of hosting 1,800 seated, or 2,500 standing people, increasing the overall capacity of the venue to over 5,000 people. The western extension incorporated a caf??, restaurant and a box office, as well as office space.
The redevelopment cost ?10.7 million, which was provided by Conwy County Borough Council, the European Union's Objective One Fund program, the Arts Council of Wales & Visit Wales

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2PH9M9C - Llandudno Pier is a Grade II* listed pier in the seaside resort of Llandudno, North Wales, United Kingdom. At 2,295 feet (700 m), the pier is the longest in Wales and the fifth longest in England and Wales. In 2005, was voted Pier of the Year 2005 by the members of the National Piers Society.
At the end of the pier is a deep-water landing stage, completely rebuilt for the third time in 1969, which is used by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company for occasional excursions to Douglas, Isle of Man, and for an annual visit of the PS Waverley or the MV Balmoral preserved steamers. The June 2007 sailings of the Balmoral were rescheduled to start at Menai Bridge Pier, after it emerged that Llandudno Pier's Landing Stage was no longer safe to use. The Landing Stage was rebuilt in 2012 and the MV Balmoral called there, the first ship since 2006, on 2 July 2015. In the present day the landing stage is no longer used for steamers but has its use as a platform for anglers to fish off the end of the pier and is not accessible to the general public.
Located on the coast of North Wales between Bangor and Colwyn Bay, the pier is very unusual in that it has two entrances, one on the promenade at North Parade and the other, the original entrance, on Happy Valley Road (Which is no longer used and is locked permanently) Between the two entrances is the Grand Hotel.
The pier had its origins in a much shorter pier of just 242 feet (74 m) built on 16 wooden piles, opened in 1858 by the St George's Harbour and Railway Company
The present pier was designed by civil engineers Sir James William Brunlees (1816-92, knighted 1886) and Alexander McKerrow (1837-1920) and built by the contractor John Dixon for the Llandudno Pier Company. After the original designs were approved on 29 May 1876 by Parliament, the town's Improvement Commissioners and the Mostyn Estate, revised designs for the ornamental ironwork and elaborate kiosks were worked on by the architects Charles Henry Driver

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2NK28M5 - Jet2holidays is a British package holiday provider and tour operator. It was formed in 2007 as a subsidiary of Dart Group PLC (now renamed Jet2 PLC), and a sister to Jet2.com, the third-largest scheduled airline in the UK.[1] As of 2018, Jet2holidays is the second-largest tour operator in the United Kingdom, by ATOL licenses granted.[2][3]
History
Jet2holidays was founded in June 2007. Upon launch, Jet2holidays provided package holidays from Jet2.com's six bases in Leeds, Manchester, Belfast, Newcastle, Blackpool and Edinburgh. It began operations at East Midlands Airport in May 2010[4] and announced an expansion to Glasgow Airport later that year.[5] In 2014, Blackpool Airport closed, taking the company back down to seven bases.[6]
By March 2015, Jet2holidays was providing package holidays to one million customers per year.[7] The following month, it created Jet2CityBreaks, a subsidiary specialising in shorter holidays to its city destinations.[8]
In April 2017, Jet2holidays became available from nine bases after the company announced an expansion to Birmingham Airport and London Stansted Airport. On 7 June 2017, Jet2holidays launched Jet2Villas, expanding its portfolio of self-catered package holidays.[9] Later that month, it celebrated ten years of operation, and had sold over seven million package holidays.[10]
In October 2017, when Monarch Airlines ceased operations, Jet2.com and Jet2holidays added over 650,000 seats from former Monarch airports, leading to Jet2holidays overtaking Thomas Cook Tour Operations to become the second-largest tour operator in the UK

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2P6JJ2M - John Joseph Lydon (born 31 January 1956), also known by his former stage name Johnny Rotten, is a British singer-songwriter. He was the lead singer of the late-1970s punk band the Sex Pistols, which was active from 1975 to 1978, and again for various revivals during the 1990s and 2000s. He is also the lead singer of post-punk band Public Image Ltd (PiL), which he founded and fronted from 1978 until 1993, and again since 2009.
Lydon's outspoken personality, rebellious image and fashion style led to his being asked to become the singer of the Sex Pistols by their manager, Malcolm McLaren. With the Sex Pistols, he penned singles including Anarchy in the U.K., God Save the Queen and Holidays in the Sun, the content of which precipitated what one commentator described as the 'last and greatest outbreak of pop-based moral pandemonium' in Britain. The band scandalised much of the media, and Lydon was seen as a figurehead of the burgeoning punk movement. Because of their controversial lyrics and disrepute at the time, they are regarded as one of the most influential acts in the history of popular music.
After the Sex Pistols disbanded in 1978, Lydon founded his own band, Public Image Ltd, which was far more experimental in nature and described in a 2005 review by NME as 'arguably the first post-rock group'

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R15NEA - Retsina (Greek: ?????????) is a Greek white (or ros??) resinated wine, which has been made for at least 2,000 years. Its unique flavor is said to have originated from the practice of sealing wine vessels, particularly amphorae, with Aleppo pine resin in ancient times. Before the invention of impermeable glass bottles, oxygen caused many wines to spoil within the year. Pine resin helped keep air out, while infusing the wine with resin aroma. The Romans began to use barrels in the 3rd century AD, removing any oenological necessity for resin, but the flavor itself was so popular that the style is still widespread today.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R59WKN - This photograph shows an illuminated Christmas display outside a residential property on Ellesmere Road in Stockton Heath, a suburban area of Warrington in Cheshire. The front garden and railings are decorated with strings of white LED lights, alongside large inflatable festive figures including Santa Claus, a snowman, and a decorated Christmas tree, creating a bright and cheerful seasonal scene.
The image was taken at night during the winter months, most likely in December, when Christmas decorations are traditionally displayed across the United Kingdom. The warm glow of the lights contrasts with the darkness of the evening, highlighting the brick fa??ade of the house and the bay window behind the display. The arrangement reflects a common British tradition of decorating homes to mark the Christmas season and contribute to a shared sense of community celebration.
Inflatable decorations such as these have become increasingly popular in recent years, valued for their bold visual impact and ease of installation. In residential areas like Stockton Heath, such displays are often enjoyed by neighbours and passers-by and can become informal local landmarks during the festive period.
Images like this are frequently used to illustrate themes of Christmas, winter celebrations, suburban life, community spirit, seasonal decoration, and British holiday traditions. The photograph captures a familiar and relatable moment of festive enthusiasm within a UK neighbourhood streetscape.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RCDXE2 - This image shows Whitby Harbour in North Yorkshire during the summer months, with fishing boats, leisure craft, and historic-style sailing vessels moored along the quayside. The harbour is surrounded by tightly packed red-roofed houses and historic waterfront buildings that rise up the hillside, giving Whitby its distinctive coastal townscape.
The scene reflects Whitby's dual role as both a working harbour and a major tourist destination on the Yorkshire coast. Fishing vessels, charter boats, and visitor attractions share the waterfront, while people move along the quayside enjoying the harbour views during the holiday season.
Taken in daylight under lightly overcast summer skies, the image captures the busy but relaxed atmosphere typical of Whitby in peak season. The harbour has long been central to the town's economy and identity, historically supporting fishing, shipbuilding, and maritime trade, and today playing a key role in tourism.
The photograph illustrates the enduring appeal of Whitby Harbour as a focal point of coastal heritage, maritime activity, and summer tourism in northern England.

The vessel displays promotional signage for recreational sea-fishing trips, including references to large cod catches, a popular draw for angling visitors to the area.
Behind the boat, a wide view of Whitby Harbour reveals additional fishing and leisure vessels, quayside infrastructure, and the town's distinctive red-roofed buildings rising up the hillside. Whitby has a long maritime history and remains a working harbour while also serving as a major tourism destination on the Yorkshire coast.
The photograph was taken in daylight under lightly overcast conditions, creating soft, even light across the harbour scene. Mooring chains, railings, and deck equipment in the foreground reinforce the working character of the port.
Charter fishing boats like Chieftain Charters form an important part of Whitby's visitor economy, linking traditional maritime activity with modern leisure tourism. The image captures the blend of heritage, recreation, and everyday harbour life that defines Whitby as a coastal town.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RD243N - This image shows a crowded late summer scene on Church Street in the historic old town of Whitby, North Yorkshire. The narrow pedestrian street is lined with traditional buildings and independent shops, many associated with Whitby Jet jewellery, local crafts, and tourism-related retail.
The photograph captures a busy period, likely during the tourist season, with visitors filling the street as they walk, browse shops, and explore the town centre. People of different ages are visible, dressed for cool but settled weather, suggesting a typical day for visitors to this popular seaside destination.
Church Street forms one of Whitby's main tourist routes, linking the harbour area with attractions such as the Museum of Whitby Jet and the climb toward Whitby Abbey. Overhead wires, hanging shop signs, and historic facades contribute to the strong sense of place and heritage.
The image documents the impact of tourism on a small historic town, illustrating both the economic importance of visitors and the pressures of crowding in narrow medieval streets during peak periods. It reflects Whitby's enduring appeal as a coastal heritage destination in northern England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2R55JNA - This image shows the narrowboat Terbulance travelling along the Bridgewater Canal near the village of Lymm in Cheshire. The green-painted canal boat is captured moving slowly beneath a traditional brick bridge, with trees and vegetation lining the waterway and sunlight filtering through the leaves, creating a calm summer atmosphere.
The Bridgewater Canal is one of Britain's most historically significant waterways, often described as the first true canal of the Industrial Revolution. Today it is primarily used for leisure boating, walking, and cycling, offering a quieter alternative to modern transport and a strong connection to England's industrial and rural heritage.
Narrowboats such as Terbulance are designed for the narrow locks and channels of the UK canal system and are commonly used for holidays, long-term cruising, or as floating homes. The presence of the towpath, grassy banks, and low brick bridge reflects the enduring character of Britain's inland waterways, where historic infrastructure continues to support contemporary leisure use.
Photographed in daylight during summer, the image emphasises themes of slow travel, countryside recreation, and heritage transport. It is well suited to editorial use covering British canals, inland waterways, leisure boating, rural England, tourism, and the preservation and modern use of historic canal networks.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JP9HNM - Woman is an English weekly magazine launched in 1937. Its target audience is for 30-to 40-year-old women. It encompasses a mix of celebrity gossip and TV news, real-life stories, and fashion and beauty tips. Its lifestyle section offers ideas on homes, interiors and food, product reviews, and advice.
Odhams Press founded the first colour weekly, Woman in 1937, for which it set up and operated a dedicated high-speed print works. Its first editor, Mary Grieve, led the magazine until 1962, and was awarded an OBE for services to journalism. She was asked with other editors to advise the government during World War II, on women's perspectives during the war, as well as ensuring that the magazine provided a range of fashion tips to cope with clothes rationing as well as recipes to deal with the shortages and alternatives. In August 1943, the recipes article focused on uses of Household milk, which was how they referred to powdered milk.
Woman is published by Future plc. For the second half of 2013 the circulation of the magazine was 252,239 copies. In 2021, with more online options and 'women's' titles available, it had dropped down to 92,281

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JHPYCB - Lymm is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Warrington, Cheshire, England, which incorporates the hamlets of Booths Hill, Broomedge, Church Green, Deansgreen, Heatley, Heatley Heath, Little Heatley, Oughtrington, Reddish, Rushgreen and Statham. At the 2021 United Kingdom census it had a population of 12,700.
History
The name Lymm, of Celtic origins, means a place of running water and is likely derived from an ancient stream that ran through the village centre. The village appears as Limme in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Lymm was an agricultural village until the Industrial Revolution, which brought the Bridgewater Canal and the Warrington and Altrincham Junction Railway to the village. The village played a prominent role within the salt extraction industry, gold beating industry and cotton industry (many of its inhabitants were fustian cutters).
Lymm Heritage Centre, which opened in June 2017, is in the centre of the village on Legh Street. It hosts exhibitions related to local history as well as activities for schools and visitors.
Morris dancing was taking place in Lymm as early as 1817, often appearing in the village at Rushbearing time throughout the Victorian era. Morris dancing[7] continues to feature within the village with Lymm Morris dancers frequently performing during Rushbearing and at the various annual village festivals including the Lymm May Queen Festival, Lymm Festival and Lymm Dickensian Festival.
In 2017, Lymm was voted as one of the 'Best Places to Live' according to The Times and The Sunday Times list. In 2023, the village was voted as one of Britains 'Most Desirable Towns' according to The Daily Telegraph

If you were to fly into Cardiff Airport these days on a clear day and look towards Barry Island, you would see the words YNYS Y BARRI BARRY ISLAND writ large on the wall along the Eastern Promenade. The large scale letters have been formed from colourful, quirky climbing holds and other acrylic shapes of buckets, trains, flip flops, ice cream cones, anchors, fish
The 2014 Celfwaith commission to create a climbing wall was part of a major refurbishment scheme on Barry Island, including structural works to the Eastern end of the Promenade
Early in 2014 Celfwaith appointed Becky Adams to collaborate on consultation meetings and workshops with youth groups at Area 41 and Barry Island, pupils at Barry Island Primary School, and the Barry Island Historical Society.
Gordon Young was appointed to create the climbing wall and had previous experience of creating climbing and bouldering structures in Blackpool. However, his proposal for Barry Island was completely different and captured the fun, colourful and tongue-in-cheek character of the place popularised by Gavin & Stacey.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2M84KJK - Etihad Airways (Arabic: ??????????? ???????????????????? ?????????????????????, romanized: sharikat al-itti?d li-??-??ayarn) is one of two flag carriers of the United Arab Emirates (the other being Emirates). Its head office is in Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi, near Abu Dhabi International Airport. Etihad commenced operations in November 2003.[2] It is the second-largest airline in the UAE after Emirates. The name Etihad is Arabic for 'Union'.
The airline operates more than 1,000 flights per week to over 120 passenger and cargo destinations in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America, with a fleet of 102 Airbus and Boeing aircraft as of February 2020. In 2015, Etihad carried 14.8 million passengers, a 22.3% increase from the previous year, delivering revenues of US$9.02 billion and net profits of US$103 million. Its main base is Abu Dhabi International Airport.
In addition to its core activity of passenger transportation, Etihad also operates Etihad Holidays and Etihad Cargo. Etihad established its airline alliance, Etihad Airways Partners, in October 2015 which was disbanded in 2018 after several of its members fell into financial difficulties. Etihad Airways holds minority equity investments in the participating airlines, as well as having had a stake in Virgin Australia, until its insolvency in April 2020 with no return on investment. Booking for these airlines was consolidated under one network.
The emirate of Abu Dhabi was a joint-owner of Gulf Air along with Bahrain, Qatar, and the Sultanate of Oman. Abu Dhabi International Airport was one of Gulf Air's bases and hubs from the 1970s until September 2005, when Abu Dhabi withdrew from the airline, leaving it an Oman and Bahrain-owned airline until the former's exit in 2007 to focus on Oman Air.
In July 2003, future UAE president Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who wanted an airline for Abu Dhabi, issued a Royal (Amiri) Decree that established Etihad Airways as the second flag carrier of the UAE

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RDAWB5 - Akt (stylised as akt and legally known as The Albert Kennedy Trust) is a voluntary organisation based in England, created in 1989 to serve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ+) young people who are homeless or living in a hostile environment. It started in Greater Manchester in 1989 and opened in London in 1996, and expanded to Newcastle in 2013, Newcastle upon Tyne and Bristol.
History
The charity is named after Albert Kennedy (31 January 1973 ? 30 April 1989), a 16-year-old Social Services care leaver from Manchester who was gay. Kennedy died after falling from the top of Chorlton Street multi-storey car park. Despite an inquest the circumstances of his death remain unclear. The official version is that he died from misadventure.
Kennedy had experienced a great deal of homophobia during his life. Manchester's gay community was moved into action by the Trust's founder patron Cath Hall. Cath Hall was a straight foster carer who saw the need for an organisation to be set up to support young lesbian, gay, bi and trans people who were facing homelessness because of rejection at home. She had observed that Kennedy's case was not isolated, and that many other LGBTQ+ young people in and out of the foster care system were struggling with the effects of homophobia. Hall described the founding of the trust as an emotional response, an angry response, to what was going on.
As a result, the Albert Kennedy Trust was formed, officially becoming a Trust in 1990.
In 2019 the Albert Kennedy Trust rebranded as akt.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RDAWNP - The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (SPI), also called Order of Perpetual Indulgence (OPI), is a charitable, protest, and street performance movement that uses drag and religious imagery to satirize issues of sex, gender, and morality (particularly Christian perspectives on these topics) and fundraise for charity. In 1979, a small group of gay men in San Francisco began wearing the attire of Catholic nuns in visible situations using camp to promote various social and political causes in the Castro District.
From the original organization in San Francisco, the Sisters have grown throughout the U.S., Canada, Australia, Europe, and South America, and are now an international network of autonomous orders. These orders are mostly registered as non-profit charity organizations that raise money for AIDS, LGBT-related causes, and mainstream community service organizations, while promoting safer sex and educating others about the harmful effects of drug use and other high risk behaviors. They have also protested many Christian, and specifically Catholic, events perceived as anti-LGBT, including the visit of Pope John Paul II to the United States.
Throughout the movement's history there have been a number of conflicts with Christian communities. The group has been characterized by some Catholics (such as the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights) as anti-Catholic and a hate-group for impersonating and mocking Catholic practices and beliefs, including religious sisters

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy P9FFM0 - The Cheshire Ring is a canal cruising circuit or canal ring, which includes sections of six canals in and around Cheshire and Greater Manchester in North West England: the Ashton Canal, Peak Forest Canal, Macclesfield Canal, Trent and Mersey Canal, Bridgewater Canal and Rochdale Canal.
Because it takes boats approximately one week to complete the circuit, it is suited to narrowboat holidays that start at and return to the same location. The route has 92 locks and is 97 miles (156 km) long. It passes through contrasting landscapes between Manchester city centre and rural Cheshire with views of the Peak District and the Cheshire Plain.
The term Cheshire Ring first appeared in the Inland Waterways Association (IWA) Bulletin in 1965,[2] where it was coined as part of a campaign to prevent the abandonment of, and restore navigation to, part of what had been known as the Peak Forest Circular Route between Manchester and Marple. When commercial carrying declined after the Second World War, sections of the Rochdale, Ashton and Peak Forest Canals that make up the urban part of the ring had gradually fallen into disuse, and by the early 1960s were impassable, with little depth of water and many locks in an unusable condition. There was a risk that the canals would be abandoned, and infilled, as they were becoming stinking eyesores. Perseverance by the IWA and the Peak Forest Canal Society paid off, and on 1 April 1974, following restoration, the ring was re-opened to navigation.
The Rochdale Canal (unlike most other canals in England) was not nationalised in 1947, and remained in the ownership of the Rochdale Canal Company. Both the Rochdale Canal and Bridgewater Canal escaped nationalisation as a result of being owned subsidiaries of the Manchester Ship Canal company.
In 2002, as part of the restoration of the Rochdale, ownership of the Rochdale Canal Company passed to the Waterways Trust, and British Waterways became the navigation authority, bringing to an end the ?3

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy H8FJ8B - The Bridgewater Canal connects Runcorn, Manchester and Leigh, in North West England. It was commissioned by Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, to transport coal from his mines in Worsley to Manchester. It was opened in 1761 from Worsley to Manchester, and later extended from Manchester to Runcorn, and then from Worsley to Leigh.
The canal is connected to the Manchester Ship Canal via a lock at Cornbrook
to the Rochdale Canal in Manchester
to the Trent and Mersey Canal at Preston Brook, southeast of Runcorn
and to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Leigh. It once connected with the River Mersey at Runcorn but has since been cut off by a slip road to the Silver Jubilee Bridge.
Often considered to be the first true canal in England, it required the construction of an aqueduct to cross the River Irwell, one of the first of its kind. Its success helped inspire a period of intense canal building in Britain, known as canal mania. It later faced intense competition from the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Macclesfield Canal. Navigable throughout its history, it is one of the few canals in Britain not to have been nationalised, and remains privately owned. Pleasure craft now use the canal which forms part of the Cheshire Ring network of canals.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2K5J0D2 - St Ives is on the western shore of St Ives Bay, its harbour sheltered by St Ives Island (a headland) and Smeaton's pier. Close to the harbour, in the old part of the town, the streets are narrow and uneven while its wider streets are in the newer parts of the town on rising ground. The town has four beaches: Porthmeor a surfing beach, Porthgwidden a small sandy cove, Harbour by the working port and Porthminster which has almost half a mile of sand
St Ives (Cornish: Porth Ia, meaning St Ia's cove) is a seaside town, civil parish and port in Cornwall, England. The town lies north of Penzance and west of Camborne on the coast of the Celtic Sea. In former times it was commercially dependent on fishing. The decline in fishing, however, caused a shift in commercial emphasis, and the town is now primarily a popular seaside resort, notably achieving the title of Best UK Seaside Town from the British Travel Awards in both 2010 and 2011. St Ives was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1639. St Ives has become renowned for its number of artists. It was named best seaside town of 2007 by The Guardian newspaper
From medieval times fishing was important at St Ives
it was one of the most important fishing ports on the north Cornish coast. The original pier's construction date is unknown but the first reference to St Ives having a pier was in 1478 in William Worcester's 'Itinerary'.[28] The pier was re-built by John Smeaton between 1766 and 1770 after falling into disrepair. It was lengthened at a later date. The octagonal lookout with a cupola belongs to Smeaton's design.
A. K. Hamilton Jenkin describes how the St Ives fisherman strictly observed Sunday as a day of rest. St Ives was a very busy fishing port and seining was the usual method of fishing. Seining was carried out by a set of three boats of different sizes, the largest two carrying seine nets of different sizes. The total number of crew was seventeen or eighteen. However this came to an end in 1924.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D91X66 - Harbour / Harbor panorama at Los Cristianos town, Southern Tenerife, Canary Islands Spain
Historical references to Los Cristianos date back to the 16th century, when it is described as a harbour by the Notary Hern?n Guerra.[2] Los Cristianos remained an important port for the south of Tenerife throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries but remained unsettled until the latter part of the 19th Century due to the threat of pirate raids as there was no significant population to warrant a castle or fort.
The first permanent settlement of Los Cristianos was in the 1860s when it was described by Pedro de Olive as a hamlet in Arona, with three one-storey houses, a two-storey house and a hut. It was officially recognised in governmental documents as been established in 1888 by 29 houses and a cave.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HTEY - Paris Tour Eiffel Tower Carousel Champ de Mars at Dusk.
The Eiffel Tower is an iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris, named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower. Erected in 1889 as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair, it has become both a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The tower is the tallest structure in Paris[10] and the most-visited paid monument in the world
7.1 million people ascended it in 2011. The third level observatory's upper platform is at 279.11 m (915.7 ft) the highest accessible to the public in the European Union. The tower received its 250 millionth visitor in 2010.
The tower stands 324 metres (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-storey building. During its construction, the Eiffel Tower surpassed the Washington Monument to assume the title of the tallest man-made structure in the world, a title it held for 41 years, until the Chrysler Building in New York City was built in 1930. Because of the addition, in 1957, of the antenna atop the Eiffel Tower, it is now taller than the Chrysler Building. Not including broadcast antennas, it is the second-tallest structure in France, after the Millau Viaduct.
The tower has three levels for visitors. Tickets can be purchased to ascend, by stairs or lift (elevator), to the first and second levels. The walk from ground level to the first level is over 300 steps, as is the walk from the first to the second level. The third and highest level is accessible only by lift?stairs do exist but are usually closed to the public. The first and second levels have restaurants.
The tower has become the most prominent symbol of both Paris and France, often in the establishing shot of films set in the city.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2BG7KH4 - An ice cream van (British) or ice cream truck (American) is a commercial vehicle that serves as a mobile retail outlet for ice cream, usually during the summer. Ice cream vans are often seen parked at public events, or near parks, beaches, or other areas where people congregate. Ice cream vans often travel near where children play ? outside schools, in residential areas, or in other locations. They usually stop briefly before moving on to the next street. Along the sides, a large sliding window acts as a serving hatch, and this often displays pictures of the available products and their prices. Most ice cream vans tend to sell both pre-manufactured ice pops in wrappers, and soft serve ice cream from a machine, served in a cone, and often with a chocolate flake (in Britain) or a sugary syrup. While franchises or chains are rare within the ice cream truck community (most trucks are independently owned and run), some do exist.
In some locations, ice cream van operators have diversified to fill gaps in the market for soft drinks, using their capacity for refrigerated storage to sell chilled cans and bottles.

¿Whats this iPod Shuffle set all about? Read about it here
'Art for Art's Sake' is a single from the 'How dare You!' album, by the British Pop/Rock band 10cc. It was released in 1975. The band were Graham Gouldman, Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. They were all played multiple instruments and most of the band's albums were recorded at their own Strawberry Studios (North) in Stockport, England. I used to work about 2 minutes walk away from it. Eric Stewart engineered most releases.
Most of the band were from Manchester and grew up together as kids. They were originally rejected by The Beatles Apple label. Jonathan King signed the band to his UK Records label in July 1972 and dubbed them 10cc. By his own account, King chose the name after having a dream in which he was standing in front of the Hammersmith Odeon in London where the boarding read '10cc The Best Band in the World'.
A widely repeated claim, disputed by King and Godley, but confirmed in a 1988 interview by Creme, and also on the webpage of Gouldman's current lineup, is that the band name represented a volume of semen that was more than the average amount ejaculated by men, thus emphasising their potency or prowess.
The band had a canon of hits in teh mid 1970's. In February 1975 the band announced they had signed with Mercury Records for US$1 million. The catalyst for the deal was one song – 'I'm Not in Love'.
A compilation album 'Changing Faces - The Very Best of 10cc and Godley &
Creme' is a good intro to the band.

The Lowry is a combined theatre and gallery complex situated in Salford Quays, in Salford, England. It is named after the early 20th century painter, L. S. Lowry, known for this paintings of industrial scenes in North West England.
Designed by Michael Wilford and Buro Happold, (Wayfinding System and 'Artworks at the Lowry Gallery' by Reich + Petch) the building was completed in 1999 costing £120 million.
Funding was helped by £21m of National Lottery grant. The aerofoil canopy at the entrance is clad with perforated steel and illuminated from the inside at night. It was officially opened on 12 October 2000 by Queen Elizabeth II.
When I was a lad the dock complex at the Pomona Salford Docks was very run down and a good place to be picked off by a .22 air rifle pellet. Today the showcase Lowry has been joined by The Imperial War Museum North a shopping complex and MediaCityUK. This is a 200 acre complex, whose The main tenant upon initial completion will be the BBC at its new 12,500m² BBC Centre.
When completed, the development will have an unusual feature in that the streets will not bear any names, but will instead be identified by colours alone. The address of the BBC will, for example, be 'Blue'. The BBC have a long history in the city, BBC's very first regional TV studio was also in Manchester – Studio A at Dickenson Road – which it had bought from Mancunian Films in 1954. A place where Top of The Pops was originally filmed.
BBC North West will relocate to the site from its current premises in Oxford Road, Manchester.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy D8HDMB - Manchester Pride is an annual gay pride festival and parade held each summer in the city of Manchester, England. It is one of the longest running in the country and attracts thousands of visitors to the city's Gay Village, centred around Canal Street, each year. The festival's events that take place within the Village require a paid-for Pride wristband for entry, while other events, such as the parade, can be watched by any spectator.
The current ten day festival includes a Pride Fringe with a series of arts, music and cultural events all over the city as well as community events including poetry readings, quizzes and film showings, culminating in The Big Weekend, a 72-hour party during the August bank holiday weekend in Canal Street and the surrounding area, with a parade through the streets of Manchester.

St Ives was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1639. St Ives has become renowned for its number of artists. It was named best seaside town of 2007 by The Guardian newspaper
Pedn Olva Mine, a former copper mine, at Pedn Olva Point adit, operated in St Ives before 1911, when the engine house on Pedn Olva Point was demolished, now the site of the Pedn Olva Hotel.
The modern seaside resort developed as a result of the arrival of the St Ives Bay branch line from St Erth, part of the Great Western Railway in 1877. With it came a new generation of Victorian seaside holidaymakers. Much of the town was built during the latter part of the 19th century. The railway, which winds along the cliffs and bays, survived the Beeching cuts and has become a tourist attraction itself
From medieval times fishing was important at St Ives
it was one of the most important fishing ports on the north Cornish coast. The original pier's construction date is unknown but the first reference to St Ives having a pier was in 1478 in William Worcester's 'Itinerary'. The pier was re-built by John Smeaton between 1766 and 1770 after falling into disrepair. It was lengthened at a later date. The octagonal lookout with a cupola belongs to Smeaton's design
The first lifeboat was stationed in the town in 1840. In 1867 the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) built a boathouse at Porthgwidden beach. It proved to be a difficult site to launch from, and in 1867 it was replaced by a building in Fore Street.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RDAW24 - Whether you're at home or abroad, you can still enjoy the sunshine with these tips:
use a water-resistant UVA and B sunscreen of at least SPF 30 for best protection. The higher the SPF, the more effective the sun protection
put in on all parts of your skin that are in the sun, and reapply through the day, especially after a swim as it might wash off (even if it's water resistant)
stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm ? it's at its most dangerous then
don't try to get burnt - a lot of young people think that burning = tanning. You don't need to burn so you can tan
wear a hat or cap to keep the heat off your head, and look stylish with sunglasses

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy DE9AP0 - The Bridgewater Canal connects Runcorn, Manchester and Leigh, in North West England.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy CEMX1N - A festive winter dusk scene at the Edinburgh Christmas fair in Princes Street Gardens, showing brightly illuminated amusement rides glowing against a deep blue evening sky in the heart of Scotland's capital city. The image features a traditional helter skelter tower and a swing carousel decorated with red, white and warm golden lights, creating a strong visual contrast with the surrounding darkness and bare winter trees. The lights spill across the gardens, reflecting the lively atmosphere of Edinburgh's annual winter festival.
In the background, historic city centre buildings along Princes Street rise above the gardens, anchoring the fair firmly within Edinburgh's urban landscape. The location, close to the former Jenners department store, is one of the city's most recognisable public spaces and becomes a focal point each winter for seasonal events, attracting residents and tourists alike. Blurred figures moving through the scene suggest crowds in motion, reinforcing the sense of energy, cold-weather activity and festive excitement typical of the Christmas period.
Princes Street Gardens sits between Edinburgh's Old Town and New Town and regularly hosts major civic celebrations. During the winter months it is transformed into a temporary amusement park and Christmas attraction, symbolising the city's role as a cultural and tourism destination during the festive season. The combination of fairground rides, historic architecture, winter trees and twilight lighting conveys themes of celebration, seasonal leisure, urban life and tourism in a European capital city.
This image is well suited for editorial use relating to Christmas, winter festivals, city tourism, seasonal events, public celebrations and Scottish urban life, as well as commercial applications requiring atmospheric winter imagery from a major UK city.
