He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began working in the theatre, gaining recognition as a Shakespearean actor at the Bristol Old Vic and with the English Stage Company. It was included in his 1842 collection of Poems. Tennyson wrote the poem, titled Thoughts of a Suicide in manuscript, after the death of his friend Arthur Henry Hallam in 1833. The poem was autobiographical.
Tennyson explained, When I wrote 'The Two Voices' I was so utterly miserable, a burden to myself and to my family, that I said, 'Is life worth anything?' (Hill, 54). In the poem, one voice urges the other to suicide (There is one remedy for all repeated on lines 201 and 237)
the poet's arguments against it range from vanity to desperation, yet the voice discredits all. The poem's ending delivers no conclusions, and has been widely criticized[according to whom?]the poet finds no internal affirmation, invoking solace outside himself (Tucker). King Amenhotep III commissioned numerous statues of himself, especially for his temples in Thebes, then Egypt's capital. His peaceful reign was a time of opulence and outstanding artistic refinement, often displayed on a grand and ambitious scale. The complete sculpture showed him striding. This and a slightly smaller colossus flanked a doorway in the temple of Mut in Karnak. The head of the second statue is also in the British Museum, but the bodies remain in Karnak. Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2RW3WYA - The Greek Revival façade facing Great Russell Street is a characteristic building of Sir Robert Smirke, with 44 columns in the Ionic order 45 ft (14 m) high, closely based on those of the temple of Athena Polias at Priene in Asia Minor. The pediment over the main entrance is decorated by sculptures by Sir Richard Westmacott depicting The Progress of Civilisation, consisting of fifteen allegorical figures, installed in 1852.
The construction commenced around the courtyard with the East Wing (The King's Library) in 18231828, followed by the North Wing in 18331838, which originally housed among other galleries a reading room, now the Wellcome Gallery. Work was also progressing on the northern half of the West Wing (The Egyptian Sculpture Gallery) 18261831, with Montagu House demolished in 1842 to make room for the final part of the West Wing, completed in 1846, and the South Wing with its great colonnade, initiated in 1843 and completed in 1847, when the Front Hall and Great Staircase were opened to the public. The museum is faced with Portland stone, but the perimeter walls and other parts of the building were built using Haytor granite from Dartmoor in South Devon, transported via the unique Haytor Granite Tramway.
In 1846 Robert Smirke was replaced as the museum's architect by his brother Sydney Smirke, whose major addition was the Round Reading Room 18541857
at 140 feet (43 m) in diameter it was then the second widest dome in the world, the Pantheon in Rome being slightly wider.
The next major addition was the White Wing 18821884 added behind the eastern end of the South Front, the architect being Sir John Taylor.

However when the British Museum was built in the 1760s, the owners decided to change the name to the British Museum Tavern in 1762 and in 1858 after a refit it became the Museum Tavern
The refit was overseen by architect William Finch Hill who was best known for his designs for Music Halls, much of his design still remains.
It's position at the entrance to the British Museum means it has for centuries been a favourite port of call for the many visitors, academics and workers in the area.
When the British Library was inside of the British Museum it attracted the great minds and thinkers, a regular user was Karl Marx and it has been said that the Museum Tavern was his local' whilst he was rewriting history.
Other famous visitors to the Tavern have included Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and J. B. Priestley.
There is no doubt even up to the present day a wide range of people have frequented the Museum Tavern which is part of its charm, it is a traditional London pub owned by Taylor Walker Brewery with real ales on tap and traditional food being served.

It forms the practical part of a memorial to the Prince Consort

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2T35C29 - The Albert Memorial, directly north of the Royal Albert Hall in Kensington Gardens, London, was commissioned by Queen Victoria in memory of her beloved husband Prince Albert, who died in 1861. Designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the Gothic Revival style, it takes the form of an ornate canopy or pavilion 176 feet (54 m) tall, in the style of a Gothic ciborium over the high altar of a church, sheltering a statue of the prince facing south. It took over ten years to complete, the £120,000 cost (the equivalent of about £10,000,000 in 2010) met by public subscription.
The memorial was opened in July 1872 by Queen Victoria, with the statue of Albert ceremonially seated in 1876. It has been Grade I listed since 1970.

When Prince Albert died on 14 December 1861, at the age of 42, the thoughts of those in government and public life turned to the form and shape of a suitable memorial, with several possibilities, such as establishing a university or international scholarships, being mentioned. Queen Victoria, however, soon made it clear that she desired a memorial in the common sense of the word.

The place where Whittington's Stone stands, or stood, in which the stone appears as the base or plinth of a cross, with part of the pillar still remaining, as drawn by Chatelain in 1745
The large tablet was erected in 1821, restored in 1935, and the cat sculpture was added in 1964. It is a two-segment slab of Portland stone, the inscription to the south-west side now almost completely eroded, that to the north-east [tells] the career of the medieval merchant and City dignitary Sir Richard Whittington (c.13541423), including his [three/four] terms as Lord Mayor. The memorial marks the site where 'Dick Whittington', returning home discouraged after a disastrous attempt to make his fortune in the City, heard the bells of St Mary-le-Bow ring out, 'Turn again Whittington, thrice Lord Mayor of London.' On top is the 1964 sculpture of a cat by Jonathan Kenworthy, in polished-black Kellymount limestone. Iron railings, oval in plan, with upper flourishes and spearhead finials above and an intersecting circular return (an overthrow), surround it. The stone and railings are negligibly raised by a small broad stone plinth mainly set into the surrounding pavement. It has had statutory protection as listed, in the initial grade II category, since 1972.

The locomotive was built as a standard Jubilee Class in 1934 by the North British Locomotive Company for the London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS). In May 1961, under the ownership of British Railways, Bahamas was the recipient of several experimental modifications aimed at improving the steam engine. In July 1966, Bahamas was withdrawn from traffic. A preservation society was founded and raised the money to purchase it from British Rail to prevent it from being scrapped. After repairs by the Hunslet Engine Company in Leeds Bahamas was transported to Dinting Railway Museum, near Glossop, Derbyshire.
After British Rail's ban on steam locomotives ended, Bahamas was permitted to run on the national rail network. In October 1972, Bahamas hauled its first excursion special, proving there was public demand. A year later, it was removed from service when its boiler certificate expired. In 1988, it returned to steam after overhaul. It was withdrawn from mainline use after its ticket expired. Between 1997 and 2013, Bahamas alternated between public displays and storage. Another overhaul began during 2013 and the locomotive returned to mainline operations in early 2019

After repairs by the Hunslet Engine Company in Leeds Bahamas was transported to Dinting Railway Museum, near Glossop, Derbyshire.
After British Rail's ban on steam locomotives ended, Bahamas was permitted to run on the national rail network. In October 1972, Bahamas hauled its first excursion special, proving there was public demand. A year later, it was removed from service when its boiler certificate expired. In 1988, it returned to steam after overhaul. It was withdrawn from mainline use after its ticket expired. Between 1997 and 2013, Bahamas alternated between public displays and storage. Another overhaul began during 2013 and the locomotive returned to mainline operations in early 2019

The site selected for current facility, the third town hall, was just to the west of the second town hall on land which had previously been occupied by residential properties. The foundation stone was laid by the Minister of Health, Sir Hilton Young, on 22 October 1934. It was designed by Lanchester and Lodge in the Art Deco style and officially opened by the Chairman of London County Council, Lord Snell, on 3 July 1937. The design involved a symmetrical main frontage with thirteen bays facing onto Mare Street
the central section of five bays featured a doorway flanked by windows on either side on the ground floor
there were five round headed widows leading onto a balcony on the first floor with a clock and the borough coat of arms above. The principal rooms were the council chamber, the mayor's parlour, the members' room and an assembly hall running along the rear of the building.
The building continued to be the local seat of government after the formation of the enlarged London Borough of Hackney in 1965. However, many of the council officers and their departments, who had been located in disparate departments around the area, moved to the new Hackney Service Centre in Hillman Street, designed by Hopkins Architects, in 2010.

He worked extensively in London, predominantly under Moss Empires, for whom he designed the Hippodrome in 1900, Hackney Empire (1901), Coliseum (1903) and Palladium (1910). His last major commission before retirement was the Victoria Palace (1911) for the variety magnate Alfred Butt. During his 40-year career, Matcham was responsible for the design and construction of over 90 theatres and the redesign and refurbishment of a further 80 throughout the United Kingdom
Matcham was born in Newton Abbot, Devon, where he became apprenticed at the age of 14 to the architect George Soudon Bridgman. Matcham moved to London, aged 21, where he joined the architectural practice of J. T. Robinson, who was to become his father-in-law. Under Robinson, Matcham completed his first solo design, the Elephant and Castle Theatre, which opened in June 1879. He took over the business on Robinson's death and continued the designs of various provincial theatres. He formed his own practice, Matcham & Co., in the 1880s and enlisted skilled craftsmen. His first major association came in the 1880s when he was employed to design and refurbish theatres belonging to the Revill family who owned many of the theatres throughout the United Kingdom.
Matcham's most successful period was between 1892 and 1912 when he worked extensively for Moss Empires, a theatre building business headed by Edward Moss and run by Oswald Stoll. Under them, Matcham completed 21 theatres, including three in London, with the rest being in the provinces. Also during this period, although not with Moss Empires, he completed the designs for the Tower Ballroom at Blackpool Tower, Grand Theatre, Blackpool and the Theatre Royal, Norwich, all in 1894, and the County Arcade, Leeds, in 1900.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2JX2TAG - The Advanced Passenger Train (APT) was a tilting high speed train developed by British Rail during the 1970s and early 1980s, for use on the West Coast Main Line (WCML). The WCML contained many curves, and the APT pioneered the concept of active tilting to address these, a feature that has since been copied on designs around the world. The experimental APT-E achieved a new British railway speed record on 10 August 1975 when it reached 152.3 miles per hour (245.1 km/h), only to be bested by the service prototype APT-P at 162.2 miles per hour (261.0 km/h) in December 1979, a record that stood until September 2006.
Development of the service prototypes dragged on, and by the late 1970s the design had been under construction for a decade and the trains were still not ready for service. The election of Margaret Thatcher brought matters to a head and she alluded to funding cuts for the project. Facing the possibility of cancellation, BR management decided to put the prototypes into service, with the first runs along the London-Glasgow route taking place in December 1981. The result was a media circus when every problem large or small received front-page coverage and the entire project derided as an example of BR's incompetence. The trains were withdrawn from service again by the end of the month, to the great amusement of the press.
In spite of the APT's troubled history, the design was highly influential and directly inspired other high speed trains such as the Pendolino. The considerable work on electrification that was carried out hand-in-hand with APT was put to good use with newer non-tilting designs like the British Rail Class 91. The APT's tilt system was returned to the WCML on the British Rail Class 390, based on the Fiat Ferroviaria tilting train design and built by Alstom.

The pub was located on the corner of Wardour Street and Peter Street.
During the general election of 1784, House provided free drink to the public.
More recently, it was a goth pub which also hosted heavy metal gigs. It closed in 2006, when the owner Mitchells & Butlers sold the building to property developers.
The Wardour Street building it formerly occupied is clad in faience, including a faience relief of Charles James Fox. As of 2017, the premises were in use as a branch of the Byron hamburger chain.
Successor venues
Later in 2006, the former Intrepid Fox management team opened a new venue of the same name, near Centre Point. The Guardian reported the new venue's imminent closure in 2014.
Following the closure of this venue, a third incarnation of the Intrepid Fox was opened at the Archway Tavern later in 2014

Baker Street station is the combination of three separate stations, with several booking offices throughout its operational years. Major changes took place in 1891-93 and 191012. The first part is the Circle Line station, which has its two platforms now used by the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines. They are situated on a roughly east-to-west alignment beneath Marylebone Road, spanning approximately the stretch between Upper Baker Street and Allsop Place. This was part of the original Metropolitan Railway from Bishop's Road (now Paddington (Circle and Hammersmith & City lines) station to Farringdon Street (now Farringdon) which opened on 10 January 1863.
The platforms serving the main branch of the Metropolitan line towards Harrow, Uxbridge and beyond are located within the triangle formed by Marylebone Road, Upper Baker Street and Allsop Place, following the alignment of Allsop place. This station is the second section which opened on 13 April 1868 by the Metropolitan & St. John's Wood Railway. This was later absorbed by the Metropolitan Railway, which is usually known to them as Baker Street East station.

Downing Street leads off the south-west end of Whitehall, just above Parliament Street. It was named after Sir George Downing, who built a row of houses along the street around 1680 leading west from Whitehall.
Richmond House, at No. 79, has held the Department of Health since 1987. The building is scheduled to be a temporary debating chamber from 2025, while the Houses of Parliament undergo a refurbishment and modernisation programme

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries were created in the medieval triforium. This is a display area for the abbey's treasures in the galleries high up around the nave. A new Gothic access tower with lift was designed by the abbey architect and Surveyor of the Fabric, Ptolemy Dean.

Ready Money was a wealthy Parsee industrialist from Bombay who donated it to The Regent's Park in 1869 as a thank-you for the protection that he and fellow Parsees received from British rule in India.
The sculpture contains 10 tonnes of Sicilian marble and four tonnes of red Aberdeen granite. It was unveiled by Princess Mary of Teck, later Queen Mary after whom Queen Mary's Gardens are named.

housings for roof mounted cranes. To the riverside, the flat elevation of 13 bays overall is treated as one long giant arcade through 6 storeys with channelled rustication to ground floor piers. The pilasters, coupled in some cases, have fluted necking. There is a deep entablature with moulded cornice, surmounted by name plaques. Three wall-mounted, lattice, jibbed cranes with operating cabins, hydraulic powered. The warehouses were converted to residential use which involved replacement of the windows and the insertion of balconies in the loading bays.
HISTORY: Wapping developed along the northern embankment of the Thames, hemmed in by the river to the south and what was Wapping Marsh to the north, creating a peculiarly narrow and constricted shape, consisting of the axis of Wapping High Street and some north-south side streets. The building of the London Docks to the north and west of the High Street in the 1805 transformed the area from residential to docklands and the population declined as houses were destroyed to build giant warehouses along the riverfront.

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy 2AXKD48 - In July 1620, the Mayflower sailed from Rotherhithe and picked up 65 passengers, probably from Blackwall, then proceeded to Southampton on the south coast of England to begin loading food and supplies for the voyage to America. At that time, the English Separatists, who later became known as the Pilgrim Fathers, were mostly still living in the city of Leiden, in the Netherlands. There they hired a ship called the Speedwell to take them from Delftshaven in the Netherlands to Southampton to join the Mayflower.
The ship's master, Christopher Jones, died shortly after his return in 1621 and is buried in an unmarked grave at St Mary's Church. No one can be sure where on the Rotherhithe peninsula the Mayflower was berthed, but the Mayflower pub near St Mary's Church claims the honour, and lists the names of the Mayflower passengers on their wall. The building itself, despite external and interior appearances, dates only from the 1950s. The extent to which the pub was damaged during the Second World War, and was rebuilt or simply restored is uncertain

The MPU is headquartered on Wapping High Street, in the east of the city, from where it operates a fleet of vessels responsible for policing the River Thames within Greater London.
Today the MPU is responsible for waterborne policing of the 47 miles of the Thames between Hampton Court in the west and Dartford Creek in the east. Above Hampton Court, Surrey Police have responsibility for policing but a launch is supplied by the Environment Agency. Below Dartford Creek, responsibility lies with both Essex Police and Kent Police, who have combined forces and formed a joint marine unit, with Kent based at Sheerness and Essex based at Burnham-on-Crouch.

Based at a police station on Wapping High Street and with 22 vessels at its disposal, the MPU also provides support to the rest of the Metropolitan Police and to the City of London Police when dealing with incidents in or around any waterway in London. A specialist underwater and confined-spaces search team carries out searches throughout the Metropolitan Police District. The unit also has 24 officers who are trained in rope access techniques and trained to carry out searches and counter demonstrator operations at height.

The old station building designed by Leslie Green finally closed for traffic on 21 July 1929, it was demolished in the 1980s when the large building on the corner of Jermyn Street, Piccadilly and Haymarket was constructed.
In 2016, Art on the Underground commissioned artists Langlands & Bell to create an artwork to commemorate Frank Pick, the former CEO of London Transport, on the 75th anniversary of his death. By the end of the 1960s traffic congestion was causing problems, and in 1974 the market relocated to the New Covent Garden Market about three miles (5 km) south-west at Nine Elms. Above the commercial activities located on the ground floor, five storeys buildings decorated with terracotta bands are occupied by offices (formerly flats). Ionic columns on plinths, carrying the street name in gold characters, have been placed at both the eastern and western entrances of the avenue.
The building situated at 6-20 Sicilian Avenue is Grade II listed.

Southwark Cathedral or The Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Saviour and St Mary Overie, Southwark, London, lies on the south bank of the River Thames close to London Bridge.
It is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Southwark. It has been a place of Christian worship for over 1,000 years, but a cathedral only since the creation of the diocese of Southwark in 1905. The church was in the diocese of Winchester until 1877, when the parish of St Saviour's, along with other South London parishes, was transferred to the diocese of Rochester The present building is mainly Gothic, from 1220 to 1420, although the nave is a 19th-century reconstruction in a 13th-century style.
This Flemish-style monument can be found within the North Choir Aisle. The coat of arms bearing three herons is a pun on the name Tre-hearne. He was one of the 'Bargainers', together with John Bingham helping to buy the church from King James I . Below their four children are depicted. They had six, but two died very early.These are represented by the smaller figures on the right (just out of shot).

Description: Tony Smith image Alamy RM9AW0 - The George or George Inn is a public house established in the medieval period on Borough High Street in Southwark, London, owned and leased by the National Trust. It is located about 250 metres (820 ft) from the south side of the River Thames near London Bridge and is the only surviving galleried London coaching inn.
The first map of Southwark (Duchy of Lancaster ca1543) clearly shows it marked as 'Gorge'. It was formerly known as the George and Dragon, named after the legend of Saint George and the Dragon. There were many such inns in this part of London. Probably the most famous was The Tabard where, in 1388, Chaucer began The Canterbury Tales. In 1677 the George was rebuilt after a serious fire that destroyed most of medieval Southwark. The Tabard was also rebuilt after the same fire, but was demolished in the late nineteenth century.
It is known that galleried inns were used for Elizabethan theatrical productions (Inn-yard theatre).
Later, the Great Northern Railway used the George as a depot and pulled down two of its fronts to build warehousing. Now just the south face remains.
The George was one of the many famous coaching inns in the days of Charles Dickens. Dickens in fact visited the George and referred to it in Little Dorrit.
The building is partly . The ground floor is divided into a number of connected bars. The Parliament Bar used to be a waiting room for passengers on coaches. The Middle Bar was the Coffee Room, which was frequented by Charles Dickens. The bedrooms, now a restaurant, were upstairs in the galleried part of the building.
It is one of only two coaching inns to survive in Greater London, and is the only galleried example. The White Hart is immediately to the north, and the site of The Tabard immediately to the south (now Talbot Yard). The building is Grade I listed, and is listed in CAMRA's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors

'Radio 4' are from Brooklyn and some of their influences, such as the Gang Of Four &
Primal Scream are easily heard in their music. They formed around 1999 and the name refers to BBC Radio 4, via the PIL track of the same name.
This track was released summer of 2001 and this was from their second album 'Gotham!', which is worth checking out. Their last album release was back in 2006.

Chiswick Park tube station is in west London. It was opened in 1879 and remodelled in 1931 when the Piccadilly line was extended west. The new station was designed by Charles Holden in a modern European style using brick, reinforced concrete and glass. Holden's design was inspired by Alfred Grenander's underground station Krumme Lanke in Berlin.
Inside the station a number of the original signs and features remain. A notice under each mentions 'This sign has been retained as part of the heritage of Chiswick Park station. Please note you must change at Hammersmith for the Piccadilly line. Mark Lane Station is now called Tower hill'.

There were two main problems that faced the early bus and tramway operators with regard to fare collection. One was that of fare dodgers and the other was the possibility of conductors who would fiddle the takings, though it's only a very small minority who would do such things. The solution to these was the Bell Punch ticket system. This was quite ingenious as the system had methods to defeat both, however it was very labour intensive.
The Bell Punch Company produced an automated version of their pre-printed ticket system, which they called Ultimate. These used continuous ticket rolls with the values printed on them. Each ticket carried a serial number and a pre-printed value. The machines had several tracks each of which had a lever at the front that ejected a ticket, which was then torn off against a serrated cutter. The fare stage could be printed in one of three positions on the bottom of the ticket. Each new ticket roll had a piece of adhesive tape (which the conductor had to lick) to join it to the end of the old one, which was supposed to prevent the conductor having to change rolls mid-journey.
The system coped better with changing fare structures, but after a while, the machines became unreliable and would jam up. It was not uncommon to see conductors tearing off tickets from the back of the machines at busy times. Its also not that uncommon at the museum! In the West Midlands, this system was used by West Bromwich, Wolverhampton and Birmingham.

King Amenhotep III commissioned numerous statues of himself, especially for his temples in Thebes, then Egypt's capital. His peaceful reign was a time of opulence and outstanding artistic refinement, often displayed on a grand and ambitious scale. The complete sculpture showed him striding. This and a slightly smaller colossus flanked a doorway in the temple of Mut in Karnak. The head of the second statue is also in the British Museum, but the bodies remain in Karnak. The confectionery manufacturer was established in East London in 1748 by Miss Elizabeth Batger. The Batger family were leading sugar refiners in Britain and by the early-twentieth century became the largest jam and confectionery makers. Batger's had multiple factories, but the main factory was located on Broad Street in Stephany, which manufactured jams, bakery assortments, sweets and toffee. However, their most popular products were Chinese figs, Silmos Lollies, Jersey Caramels and John Peel marmalade, which were marketed to the public using imaginative and entertaining advertisements.
During the First World War, Batger's supplied the British army with jam. However, by 1940 the Stephany factory had been destroyed by bombing, forcing the company to move outside London's city core to 44 Clapham, Common South Side. The Clapham factory was known for producing Harlequin Christmas Crackers and cake decorations. In 1970, the company was acquired by Needlers Ltd., a confectionery manufacturer, which led to the closing of the Clapham factory a year later. Needlers Ltd. was later sold to Ashbury Confectionery Ltd. The last original Batger products were discontinued in 2000. For convenience, this tour will visit the Batger factory that was located at 566 Cable Street, which is currently an arts studio.

It was initially developed in London under the purview of the London Rubber Company and British Latex Products Ltd, where it was manufactured between 1932 and 1994. The London Rubber Company was formed in 1915, and the Durex brand name (Durability, reliability, and excellence) was launched in 1929, although London Rubber did not begin manufacturing own-brand condoms until 1932, in collaboration with a rubber technology student from Poland named Lucian Lundau. The first book on The London Rubber Company and the history of Durex condoms, written by Jessica Borge, was published in September 2020 by McGill-Queen's University Press.
The London Rubber Company later merged with SSL International, since 2010 which has been owned by the Anglo-Dutch company Reckitt Benckiser. It is one of the best-selling condom brands around the world, with 30% of the global market. In 2006, Durex condoms were the second-best-selling brand of condoms in the United States, with Trojan condoms being the first. It is supplied by, among others, the company Karex.
In 2007 the last factory making Durex condoms in the UK stopped manufacturing and production has since moved to China, India and Thailand. The modern range includes a wide variety of latex condom, including the Sheik and Ramses brands in North America, and the Avanti condom. Durex also provides a range of lubricants and sex toys.
Although Durex was not an official sponsor of the Olympic Games, Durex provided 150,000 free condoms to more than 10,000 athletes that competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London
